2024.05.21 21:22 Erwinblackthorn OPC: City in the Clouds by JB Williams

Today’s one page challenge is for The City in the Clouds by J.B. Williams. Finally, a requested challenge, rather than the usual cycle of me finding a story and the person being triggered that I did so. At 234 pages and a whopping price tag of $20.99 for a paperback, it’s a wonder why it looks untouched. Flip some burgers for an hour to pay for this… whatever it is. I was told the editor is good, so let’s see how he gummed up the works.
The rules of the one page challenge are simple: I go through the first page of the book(about 300 words or 3 paragraphs) and say where the average reader would stop. These reviews are short, sweet, and to the point (unlike most of these books). The main things we look for are things like tension, a hint at the plot existing, good feng shui, a feeling like the blurb is accurate, a lack of obfuscation, and the story fulfilling its role as a story. As we go along, I’ll explain why readers love or hate certain elements and we’ll see what straws break the camel’s back.
The title, The City in the Clouds, makes me think of fantasy, but it’s meant to be sci-fi. Clouds symbolize knowledge beyond our reach or something like daydreaming, treated as water in air(mystery in knowledge). Saying the title this way makes it seem like the focus is the city itself, which would be cool if it was something like a dystopian or utopian story. Maybe a tech noir or detective story, but… it’s not. This story is actually about a woman, and it’s a comedy, completely conflicting with the genre in two ways.
I didn’t want to say this but Huston… we’re already having problems.
The ebook cover is a drawing of curly haired woman staring at the camera like she’s constipated, while the paperback version is of an anime girl holding a gun and looking like she has diarrhea. Both versions have her in a suit, with a giant gas planet behind her. Both have similar fonts for the title and name, but the ebook version is so blurred and darkened that it reads like a secret message; the physical version being slightly less blurry. If I saw this on a shelf, I wouldn’t recognize this as a book or know what it was called. I find it strange because the back of the book is very clear, given a blue box for clarity, and has a sun with a red sky that would have made more sense than these frumpy women.
I guess the title and name are made illegible because we’re supposed to zoom our eyes straight to the blurb:
Robin Alia Brook is considered a loser. She works at customer service for one of the largest companies in humanity's interstellar empire, gets stood up on dates, and accidentally kills people. Then when her ex-online boyfriend gives her the winning vacation lottery ticket to the famed habitat, The City of Clouds, she reluctantly accepts it.
Upon arrival, she is greeted by the massive, beautiful gas giant Bellona, and all the glamour and prospects of expansion for the famous habitat. And it is the beginning of a celebration, too! For the election of the new habitat captain! But the celebration and vacation are ruined when pirates attack, seeking the captain's riches.
They are ruthless, they are bloodthirsty, and they won't stop until they get what they want. Unfortunately for the pirates, Robin is really good at accidentally killing people, and with her is a rag tag team of a pilot recruit, an egotistical journalist, a veteran photographer, and the captain himself.
It will be a long battle for The City of Clouds, and the outcome is unknown, but one thing is certain... This is the worst vacation ever.
Slight grammar issues here and there, but most wouldn’t notice that “ex-online boyfriend” would mean the boyfriend was online and not anymore. The delivery is a little bouncy, almost appropriate, but doesn’t give much tone from how much info it tries to cram in. Something I noticed is that very little sci-fi is mentioned, with the only thing giving a sci-fi vibe being the idea of traveling to another planet. If this was a vacation to an island, very little would change from how it’s described. Like the title and name on the cover, a lot of what makes this book a book is hidden from us, in plain sight.
At this point, the average reader would probably not give it a shot, unless the idea of pirates and an ironic Die Hard premise is their cup of tea.
No prologue, no maps, no glossary, just a simple chapter 1 to greet us. Ok, I’m liking this already. I know this is a small thing, but the simplicity of just starting a story is a blessing that should be the norm, and isn’t. I haven’t read a single word and this is already the best OPC so far. Yes, it’s that easy.
Don’t ruin the experience with all your fancy try-hard nonsense and the reader will be in hog heaven.
We are told the planet, sector, system, and date. Very effective in establishing the sci-fi element in this single aside, which also lets us know it’s 400 years in the future. The planet is named Andromeda, which is a well known galaxy, so if this is in that galaxy, I assume it’s going for a “New York, New York” type of gag. The editor did a good job, with the first page establishing a scene in a restaurant. What he messed up on was… everything that’s not the scene itself, which makes up 90% of the words.
The protagonist, Robin Alia Brook has her day off described as “shot in the face”, being delivered in present tense and this has it come out awkwardly. I say this because the second sentence is past tense, then it shifts back to present, back to past. This is why people stick with past tense to avoid the headache, and present tense is now used as a hipster novelty to act as if things are more important because they’re happening as they’re written. Most readers just find it as a distraction and it causes something niche to become more niche in the process. The first paragraph ends with us being told that she’s in a restaurant that is 500 feet under the sea, of a planet called Andromeda.
She is to be dining, but she is NOT dining because her date didn’t show. Cue the audience gasping, because this is a travesty. The part that really kills this opening is the sentence “She is currently obtaining nutrients through Poseidon's generous supply of free lemons water and cheesy garlic biscuits.” This was the perfect chance for worldbuilding, to express something futuristic and fresh. Instead, it tied itself to Earth, talked about mundane food like lemon water, and it didn’t use any of these for a punchline.
This is meant to be a comedy, but is absent of comedy. We don’t need a bunch of humor in the first paragraph, but we do expect a comedy to present a tone that can lead to humor occurring. Every scene for a comedy is a setup for gags and punchlines. Much like horror, the scene is built around the mood, which is brought to a peak around half way. The introduction of a comedy book is going to hold a joke in relation to the entire book.
I believe the blurb when it says this Robin character can kill things by accident, because this book dies right after she’s introduced, around the second paragraph. The third paragraph changes the subject to be about other people in the restaurant, acting as a distraction that leads to infodumps of Robin’s outfit and such. I understand that the “joke” is that this woman is stood up on her date and we are to feel her anguish, but the reader shouldn’t be suffering through the opening this soon. Starting here is either far too late or far too soon. If anything, this is something I expect in chapter 2 or something we hear about as she’s on her way to Bellona.
A good way to put it is that this scene is a non-sequitur done in order to give fashion statements, with the important exposition ignored for window dressing.
The average reader needs tension to get sunk into a sci-fi story, because this is a planet we don’t know about with a character we’ve never seen before. What is the point of having this restaurant so deep underwater? There is a city underwater? She has a job, but where does she work? At the Krusty Krab?
Non-sequitur is a distraction that removes us from the scene and the plot to explain things that don’t serve a purpose to either. If I changed the first sentence to only hold what was part of the scene, it would be the characters name and nothing more. To strengthen an opening like this, we would have to set it up for a punchline, reinforce the sardonic tone, and tie the scene with the situation. The first sentence would go like:
Five hundred feet below the sea’s surface, Robin could not stop drinking.
This will give the impression that she’s getting drunk, while attaching her drinking to the sea outside, giving the impression that she’s drowning. But even then, I wouldn’t start here, I would begin with a comedic amount of assurance that she’s going to have her date show up, then the next scene is her waiting with this. That, or I would have her doing the walk of shame, allowing the plot to begin sooner when she gets her golden ticket, which would be like:
The ocean floor outside was slowly swallowed by darkness as the elevator pod took Robin away from Poseidon.
Here, we have a moment for her to think back to the situation, and the word “darkness” gives hint to her current feeling about the restaurant. This is a setup for the punchline that follows, already skipping the failed date and able to move forward to the poster she sees in the elevator. Movies tend to do this type of exposition with the main character telling the situation to another person, who is helpless to escape. That can add more humor and make the main character express their personality quirks. The goal is for less opening to be used up for non-sequitur and to focus it on moving forward in relation to the plot.
For a story like this, the rejection comes from a lack of being straightforward. We can always fix up a sentence and how it sounds, but this doesn’t mean much when the bones are disjointed. Thankfully, for this one, a lot of readers are used to openings like this from online serials, so there is hope that a lot of it will get a pass. It’s that first hump that it has to get over in order to shine. Sadly, for little Robin, that hump was not achieved, so her journey through the city in the cloud might as well not exist.

2024.05.21 21:19 TheIrishGod 26 looking for someone amazing and open NewYork/Anywhere

Hiya my name is Steven!
I think its time to finally meet someone that wont stab me in the back a few months after we start dating...!
I have been hurt and used too many times with last relationships and wish to find someone that is willing to grow and love me for all that I am. I am probably one of the nicest people you can meet and willing to show you that in anyway I can
I am a pretty nerdy and shy person by nature but I tend to open up with time. I like to play video games and watch anime, irl i like to try new foods and go on adventures.
Games i play are LoL, csgo, R6, some grand strategy games, more than willing to play new games and coop games or even watch shows together.
For my looks I am short for a guy, I have blue eyes and curly hair with glasses. Willing to show myself after we start talking and such. I am pretty slim and I am white. I personally don't like the way I look but hope you will!
I do not mind distance dating at all, I use discord and most other socials so I'm willing to talk on whatever is most comfortable for each of us
I hope to hear from you soon! Feel free to dm me on here to get things started and we can see how things turnout from that point ^^

2024.05.21 18:26 petrachor_ rewriting the module - advice/suggestions?

hey folks, just found this sub & i'm glad that lmop still gets attention! apologies in advance for any typos, my phone is old as balls and hates typing on reddit mobile.
I'm running the mod for three of my good friends; one is an experienced player and the other two are brand new, so we decided to start "simple".
BUT (big but) a few things led me to want to rewrite a lot of the module: - my players are a bunch of hippie nerds with interests in ecology, moral philosophy, etc. and don't gravitate toward the typical dungeon crawl. - 2/3 of my players listened to TAZ: Balance and would be insufferably annoying with references if i left the majority of the plot and NPCs alone (we're only two sessions in and I've already had to stop play to shut down repeated references to barry bluejeans and the fantasy costco jingle) - the experienced player was also in the party last time I ran this module as-written and she's a good sport but I'd love to shake things up for her
So, I decided to keep the skeleton of the module but slant it heavily towards a sort of environmentalist angle where motivations and impact aren't necessarily cut-and-dried, and the PCs have to make in-character decisions based on their internal morality instead of just playing as 'protags actions good, antagonists actions bad'.
If anyone has any suggestions for other twists or ways fo rework some of the other sidequests, I'd love to hear ideas! Clarifying questions about this variant are welcome too, if you want to borrow any of my rewritten material feel free :) TIA!
tl;dr - looking for suggestions to alter sidequests in LMoP to slant toward more environmental/ecological themes, putting PCs in ethical binds, and/or maybe some related horror elements

2024.05.21 17:50 FaithlessnessCool640 23 [M4F] Looking for my Skibidi Sigma #FL/Online

Sorry for the amazing title~ I don't know what to put there.
Note: This is not my main account, I'm just using it for this subreddit. I haven't really had any luck with reaching out to people so thought this might be better. Also cause for me personally, I don't really like to post or anything like that due to social anxiety, so there's probably a lot of over people like that I'm missing out on xd. I usually also don't type very good, due to my horrible comprehension of the English language and an inability to generally express how i feel.... But its okay, I have my dog proof-reading this. I also don't like really describing myself cause its a little hard to do and makes me feel kind of narcissistic, so I'm sorry for that as well!
So a little(or a lot) about me: Reside in Florida(EST) Physically, I prolly look nothing like an almost 24 year old, which is kind of good, kind of bad? I'll let you be the judge of that. I'm 6' and weight around 110 lbs. So yeah I'm pretty stacked 💪 I don't mind to send a picture if asked! Hobbies: I'm like everyone else and like the standard nerdy stuff, like anime and vidya games among others. For anime, my favorite is Berserk 1997, just due to the amazing art style and music, but that can be said for a lot of anime from the lates 90s, they sorta have this whimsical feeling i cant really explain. I do like a lot of slice of life(the more silly the better) and romance, but there are so many I need to watch or catch up on, cause its hard for me to find motivation to watch a series. As for games, I'm not a very competitive person, so I don't really care for "pvp" games. I've been kinda having an obsession with Warframe lately, and I find it very cozy to grind out things and making the little progress. And my favorite game series ever is the ateliar series, its amazing and i suggest you check it out if you like jrpg games with crafting(they're very interesting and cute) Also, really love coop style games like playing Halo campaign coop or L4D. I can most definitely give my Steam account if asked~ Mobile games, more so gacha games are also another fun thing I don't usually dabble in anymore, but I do play a lot of Fate Grand Order, and wouldn't mind getting back into Genshin(I play on desktop xd)
Video essays are also really interesting to me and I cant enough of that type of that content. I wish there were more that piqued my interest ;-; so if you have any niche ones that you like, you can for sure recommended me some. I don't really watch tv/movies but I generally like the reality tv shows, or true crime(thank goodness for those 24/7 true crime channels on Samsung TV) and for movies, ughhhh, again, I'm not really a movie buff but I do enjoy most movies, especially the its so bad its bad horror movies that air on those free movie apps you can get like Tubi. For music, I generally love everything, except for new country. I do like finding new stuff even if I cant understand the lyrics, like I heard some JPop for the first time a couple of weeks ago and it was amazing despite the language barrier xd. Though, there are too many artists and genres to list off, some of my favorites are like Mac Demarco, SuicideBoys, and The Smiths (I might be cooked) Also recently discovered a new artist that I really like and I think I might weirdly like ambient music; https://youtu.be/9d7BU0Y8KRI?si=PVluJHWgO6EtmMbL
So, here lately I have been in a little stall in life and thankfully will be starting classes soon after I get some financial aide stuff rolling-As having worked "dead end" jobs for years where I was unhappy and left me unfulfilled in life and wanting more. It can be a little hard for me to do some things due to anxiety. Even something as simple as driving to the same place a million times can still be a struggle for me. But hey, we all got our own problems and I'm not too afraid to shy away from that matter. I never was really interested in relationships, so I never looked for them, but here lately my mind has been getting the better of me and the idea of having someone to look forward to talking to and establishing a relationship lowkey sounded amazing.
Politics and religion is most definitely not my cup of tea, so if that's something you're looking for, I sadly cannot converse on that! I can tell you opinions and vice versa, but I'm not the most knowledgeable and don't really care for those things. I don't smoke(preferably the same), and only drink beer occasionally. I don't even really have a type, which as cliche as that sounds, I most definitely think personality and similar interests/sense of humor is a lot better than looks which can be changed in most part.
I think that's mostly it for now! If this hasn't scared you away, then you can send me a dm and I'll most definitely reply as fast I can. And sorry if this doesn't come of as serious, or I didn't explain myself in a more in-depth way, as like I said, its hard for me to think of anything I can use to describe me besides some arbitrary way. I'm most definitely looking for someone who's just as dumb and awkward😭 https://youtu.be/cvFxDZH53IY?si=8E-lYsxfW4TPuh3t
ALSO ALSO: I really like Kuromi, and got some merch of her I can most def send pics of. That's all 🫡

2024.05.21 15:52 Aggietallboy Looking for Guidance on fixing StarUI - Any SWF folks who can offer insight?

Howdy All!
Unfortunately m8r98a4f2 is MIA, and his phenomenally excellent StarUI series of mods are stuck in limbo.
Hope (s)he's OK, and comes back to us soon!!
I've done a *little* poking around, and I'm absolutely amazed by how clever the StarUI mod is.
It doesn't "cheat" at all, as far as the system is concerned, because it replaces the animation files (.swf) that drive the menus -- no console commands or anything -- clever as hell!
I was able to use JPEXS Free Flash Decompiler to look through the mod (still haven't figured out everything I did to get to that point -- I was throwing a font error originally)
I don't know how to fix the HUD (yet) but I have some idea on the Shipbuilder:
There seem to be three areas of the ActionScripts:
ShipPartData - Seems to be a library mapping FormID's to their relevant Hull/Mass/PoweDamage etc...
ShipPartInfoFetcher and ShipVariantInfoFetcher LOOK like they might feed this ShipPartData construct, but I haven't poked through to see everything that's happening.
MAYBE this is enough for some of you out there who do this stuff regularly to go "oh heck yeah, I can fix this in 10 minutes!!"
But I don't have any experience editing SWF's and my JPEXS is crashing (can it even upload changes back??)
Any insight from y'all on 1) -- is m8r ok?? and 2) how do we carry this on if they've decided to move on? Anyone with the SWF background that would consider describing how they'd go about applying the fix?
Basics that I could think of:
How do we get the FormID's for all the new habs? -- This seems to be the only part that's really breaking.
I would suggest that ShipPartInfoFetcher at least is working (mostly) -- as the mod works with DerreTech and Darkstar Astrodynamics, and it does well with variants from Darkstar -- so the ability to dynamically get the info without the formid's all prepopulated into ShipPartData has to be at least partially working, unless I completely understand how those two built their parts.
There's PROBABLY a flag in the empty habs that needs to be accounted for (BGS could've done something like create a new variant on the parent formid that can only differentiate itself with this new flag??) which would suggest that the ShipVariantInfoFetcher is where we need the most attention.
How would you go about debugging this? What can you do to get verbose/debug logs out of the SWF?
How would you update the SWF with the modified ActionScripts?
Thanks y'all!!!

2024.05.21 15:16 authrop My setup for Ironsworn - a long road to finding a flow.

My setup for Ironsworn - a long road to finding a flow.
I discovered Ironsworn a few years back during a Print-and-play / Solo gaming phase brought about due to the pandemic lockdown. I had played and enjoyed Four Against Darkness and quickly started looking for something else to scratch the Solo RPG/Gaming itch. Ironsworn seemed really interesting for a number of reasons:
  1. The narrative first approach interested me as someone who has enjoyed creative writing forever but lacked the focus to actually sit down and do it regularly.
  2. The very relaxed attitude to the setting. The Ironlands felt like it was as much a jumping off point for world creation as an interesting world to explore. The Your Truths exercise only increased this feeling and was a joy to complete on its own, even without playing the game.
  3. The extremely well written (Free!) rulebook which quickly became something I read to relax, again without even begining to play the game.
  4. The Oracles felt incredible to roll on and discover new exciting and unexpected avenues for storytelling.
Despite all of this interest, I initially struggled to get a campaign off the ground. I would enjoy creating the world and a character but then after a brief start, lose interest in my personal journey and return back to looking at the rulebook or finding other resources available, or watching Me, Myself and Die! or some other, much more practised, solo player.
I think the reason for this was that I didn't have a set method for actually playing the game. I would switch between: messing with Roll20 or Ironjournal, jotted down notes in a notepad, using a word document on my laptop and various other ways as I basically procrastinated actually making headway in my story. Even printing and organising the Lodestar reference book along with various cheatsheets in a nice folder for eventual use once I stopped dithering about. In the end, it got shelved. Always in the back of my mind and never completely forgotten but not touched for a couple of years.
Then recently I got an urge and had a quick glance through the rulebook PDF which was on my phone and I realised something I should have known all along; Ironsworn isn't a strict, crunchy system but a tool for personal storytelling and to relax into it.
So after rereading the entire rulebook (haha, of course! I love that thing) and also looking into the newer version of Ironjournal, I started and it's even better than I imagined once everything starts to flow and analysis paralysis fades.
My current setup is:
• A tablet (less distractions than a laptop) and a Bluetooth keyboard (for faster typing and easier access to formatting controls).
• The newer Ironjournal open in split screen with a Google document - I use Ironjournal for the truths, the character sheet and progress tracks, map and location/NPC tracking. The Google doc is for the my campaign journal as I can have a nicer, more novel-like font (helps me alot for all types of writing) and also allows me to format it clearer between narrative and mechanics over the inbuilt journal function of IJ.
• After using the inbuilt dice rolleoracle roller in IJ for a short while, I have switched to psychical dice and a dice tray and I now refer to my stats and the oracles in Eric Bright's Expanded Oracles document (which now includes Shawn Tomkins original oracles as well). Manually making the calculations and assessing the results. - Although this method is slightly longer, it seems to produce better narrative discussions for me rather than the extremely quick way in which IJ throws the results at you.
• I also have the rulebook PDF open as a pop out for reference along with the Expanded Oracles PDF.
• Finally, something I have discovered and I find interesting is using the UNE (Universal NPC Emulator) and BOLD (Book of Legends and Deeds) both by the late Zach Best. I believe these pre-date Ironsworn by a good 10 years and in someway do a similar job as some of IS's oracles but there is something about the structure and the results being framed as a leading question I find helpful and exciting.
All in all, I think I've found a good workflow to progress stories and enjoy the system (finally!).
Next upgrades on my list are:
• To become familiar with Delve and introduce that - I have the PDF and have read a large chunk of it but haven't bit the bullet and used it (I also haven't felt the base game lacking or the need for more as of yet).
• To get some heavy metal dice as the tactile element of them appeals to me in a way I can't quite explain (haha!).
• To become more familiar with how best to map out or otherwise create visual counterparts for my adventures, either using AI image generation or something else. Currently using a generated village map from Watabou's Procgen Arcana as a starting point for my characters home village.
Any advice or things that people have found to be personally beneficial in getting and keeping your games interesting and flowing well would be greatly appreciated.
Not sure if I wrote this post for advice or to simply consolidate my relationship with the Ironsworn system for myself. Either way, here is it!

2024.05.21 12:32 Confident_Start_4077 Red junglefowl incoming! Let loose of the ranch?

Okay, so I've got 18 red junglefowl eggs coming soon, and I've got an interesting idea. I'm starting them in a small coop with a 12-foot run while their young. But once they get older, just release them into the woods to run, free range, and roost in trees. Yes, I know chickens need a coop normally, but this is a wild chicken with great survival skills that can roost 30 feet up and fly very very very well.
Do you think this will work? It's on 300 acres with a heavy wooded forest and a constantly full lake right at the tree line, safe from hawks, tons of hiding places due to large fallen oaks, and all the native seeds, bugs, grasses, mice, and frogs they could ever want
How high should nest boxes be? I'm thinking of installing nestboxes 2-4ft high on tree trunks as a way to collect a few eggs. I figure they won't use them all the time, but on and off would be great!

2024.05.21 08:49 ayonc46 How Do You Develop a Custom WordPress Website?

To develop a custom WordPress website, plan your site structure and design. Next, install WordPress on your hosting server and choose a suitable theme or create a custom one. Customize the design and functionality using HTML, CSS, and PHP coding as needed. Add content, including pages, posts, and media, to populate your site. Finally, test your site thoroughly across different browsers and devices to ensure it functions correctly before launching it to the public.
What are the initial steps to create a personalized WordPress site?
  1. Define your goals and objectives for the website.
  2. Choose a suitable domain name for your WordPress site.
  3. Select a reliable web hosting provider that meets your needs.
  4. Install WordPress on your hosting server.
  5. Choose a theme that aligns with your brand and design preferences.
  6. Customize the theme settings and appearance to match your desired look and feel.
  7. Create essential pages such as Home, About, Contact, and Services.
  8. Install and configure necessary plugins for added functionality.
  9. Set up user roles and permissions as per your requirements.
  10. Develop a content strategy and plan for creating and organizing your website content.

Step-by-Step Guideline Develop a Custom WordPress Website

Step 1: Choose a Domain Name and Hosting
Your domain name is your website's address on the internet, like www.yoursite.com. Choose a domain name that's easy to remember, relevant to your brand, and not too long. Next, you'll need hosting, which is like renting space on the internet to store your website files. Look for a hosting provider that offers reliable service, good customer support, and enough storage and bandwidth for your needs.
Step 2: Install WordPress
WordPress is a popular platform for building websites because it's easy to use and highly customizable. Many hosting providers offer a one-click WordPress installation, which makes getting started a breeze. Simply log in to your hosting account, find the WordPress installer, and follow the prompts to set up your site. Once WordPress is installed, you can log in to your site's dashboard and start customizing it to your liking.
Step 3: Select a Theme
A WordPress theme determines the overall look and layout of your website. There are thousands of free and premium themes available, so take your time to find one that fits your style and the goals of your site. Look for a theme that's responsive (meaning it looks good on all devices), easy to customize, and well-supported by its developers. Once you've chosen a theme, you can install it on your WordPress site with just a few clicks.
Step 4: Customize Your Theme
Once you've installed your theme, it's time to customize it to make it your own. Most WordPress themes come with built-in customization options that allow you to change things like colors, fonts, and layouts without needing to know any code. Use the theme customizer in your WordPress dashboard to tweak your site's appearance until it looks just the way you want it to. Don't be afraid to experiment until you find the perfect look for your website.
Step 5: Add Content
With your theme customized, it's time to start adding content to your website. Create pages for important information like your Home page, About page, Services page, and Contact page. Use the WordPress editor to add text, images, videos, and other media to your pages. Write clear, engaging copy that tells visitors what your website is about and encourages them to explore further. Remember to proofread your content carefully before publishing to ensure it's free of errors.
Step 6: Install Plugins
WordPress plugins are like apps that add extra features and functionality to your website. There are thousands of plugins available for everything from contact forms to social media integration to search engine optimization. Think about the goals of your website and choose plugins that will help you achieve them. Be selective about the plugins you install, as too many can slow down your site and cause conflicts. Install and activate your chosen plugins from the WordPress plugin directory, then configure them to suit your needs.
Step 7: Optimize for SEO
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving your website's visibility in search engine results. A well-optimized website is more likely to rank higher in search results, driving more traffic to your site. Install an SEO plugin like Yoast SEO or All in One SEO Pack to help you optimize your content for relevant keywords, add meta tags and descriptions, and improve your site's overall SEO performance. Take the time to research keywords relevant to your niche and incorporate them naturally into your content for the best results.
Step 8: Test and Launch
Before you launch your website, it's important to test it thoroughly to ensure everything is working correctly. Check your site on different devices and browsers to make sure it looks good and functions properly. Test all links, forms, and interactive elements to make sure they work as expected. Once you're confident that everything is working as it should, it's time to launch your website and share it with the world. Celebrate your hard work and take pride in your new custom WordPress website!
Step 9: Maintain and Update
Building a website is just the beginning – maintaining it is an ongoing process. Regularly update your content to keep it fresh and relevant, and update your plugins and themes to ensure your site stays secure and performs well. Monitor your site's performance using tools like Google Analytics, and make adjustments as needed to improve usability and user experience. Listen to feedback from your visitors and make changes accordingly to keep your website running smoothly and meeting the needs of your audience.
What do you consider to select hosting and a domain name for your WordPress site?
Firstly, you'll want to choose a hosting provider that offers good speed and reliability. Look for one that has a solid reputation and good customer support in case you run into any issues. Consider your budget too, as hosting costs can vary.
As for the domain name, it's important to choose something that's easy to remember and relevant to your site's content. Avoid using complicated or obscure words that might be hard for people to spell or remember. It's also a good idea to check if your desired domain name is available on social media platforms to maintain consistency across your online presence. Lastly, think about whether you want to use a .com, .net, or other domain extension, keeping in mind what best suits your site's purpose and audience.
How do you evaluate and choose a theme that suits your brand and design preferences?
Firstly, consider your brand identity and the message you want to convey to your audience. Look for a theme that aligns with the style, colors, and overall feel of your brand.
Next, think about the functionality you need. Do you want a theme that's highly customizable or one that's more straightforward? Consider features like layout options, customization options, and compatibility with plugins you might want to use.
It's also important to check the responsiveness of the theme. Make sure it looks good and functions well on various devices, including smartphones and tablets.
Lastly, take some time to browse through different themes and read reviews from other users. This can give you a better idea of what to expect and help you make an informed decision that suits your brand and design preferences.
What essential pages should you create first?
How do you decide which plugins to install?
  1. Identify Needs: Determine the specific functionality you require for your site.
  2. Research: Look for plugins that offer the features you need.
  3. Ratings and Reviews: Check plugin ratings and read user reviews to gauge reliability and performance.
  4. Compatibility: Ensure the plugin is compatible with your WordPress version and other installed plugins.
  5. Active Installations: Choose plugins with a high number of active installations for reliability and community support.
Example:
How do you integrate custom features and functionalities into your WordPress site?
Integrating custom features and functionalities into your WordPress site involves adding extra capabilities beyond what comes with the standard installation. One way to do this is by using plugins. These are like apps for your website, and they can add all sorts of new features, from contact forms to e-commerce shops.
For example, let's say you want to add a feature for visitors to book appointments on your site. You could search for a booking plugin like "Bookly" or "Appointment Booking Calendar." After installing and activating the plugin, you'd typically set it up by following the provided instructions, which might involve configuring settings, creating booking forms, and placing them on your site where you want them to appear.
Another way to integrate custom features is by adding code directly to your site. This could involve writing your own custom functions or modifying existing ones. For instance, if you wanted to add a custom sidebar widget displaying your latest Instagram photos, you might need to write some PHP code to fetch the photos from Instagram's API and display them on your site.
In summary, integrating custom features and functionalities into your WordPress site can be done through plugins or by adding custom code, allowing you to tailor your site to your specific needs and preferences.
How do you manage user roles and permissions?
RoleCapabilitiesHow to Manage AdministratorCan do everything, including managing other users, installing plugins, and changing themes.Go to Users > All Users in the dashboard, find the user, and change their role to Administrator. EditorCan publish and manage posts, including those of other users.Go to Users > Add New, fill in user details, and assign the role of Editor. AuthorCan publish and manage their own posts only.In Users > All Users, select a user and change their role to Author. ContributorCan write and manage their own posts but cannot publish them.Add or edit a user and assign the role of Contributor. SubscriberCan only manage their own profile and read content.Change the user role to Subscriber in the Users section.
What security measures should you implement to protect your custom WordPress website?
To protect your custom WordPress website, you need to implement several security measures. Here are some specific steps:
  1. Install a Security Plugin: Use plugins like Wordfence or Sucuri. They offer features like malware scanning and firewall protection.
  2. Use Strong Passwords: Make sure all users have strong, unique passwords. A good password includes letters, numbers, and symbols.
  3. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): This adds an extra layer of security. Users will need to enter a code from their phone in addition to their password.
  4. Keep WordPress Updated: Always update WordPress to the latest version. Updates fix security vulnerabilities.
  5. Limit Login Attempts: Use a plugin like Limit Login Attempts Reloaded to prevent brute-force attacks.
  6. Change the Default "admin" Username: Don’t use "admin" as your username. Choose something unique to make it harder for hackers to guess.
  7. Use HTTPS: Get an SSL certificate to encrypt data between your website and visitors. Most hosting providers offer this for free.
  8. Backup Your Site Regularly: Use plugins like UpdraftPlus to create regular backups. If your site gets hacked, you can restore it.
How do you ensure responsiveness and mobile-friendliness in a custom WordPress site?
To ensure your custom WordPress site is responsive and mobile-friendly, follow these steps:
  1. Pick a Responsive Theme: Start with a theme known for being responsive, such as Astra or GeneratePress.
  2. Use a Mobile-Friendly Plugin: Install plugins like WP Touch, which help make your site mobile-friendly.
  3. Apply Media Queries: Add CSS media queries to adjust your layout for different screen sizes. For example:
(Css code)@media (max-width: 768px) {
.sidebar { display: none; }
.content { width: 100%; }
}
  1. Flexible Images and Videos: Ensure images and videos resize properly with:
(Css code)img, video { max-width: 100%; height: auto; }
  1. Mobile Menu: Use a plugin like Responsive Menu to create a user-friendly mobile menu.
  2. Optimize for Speed: Compress images using a plugin like Smush and enable caching with a plugin like W3 Total Cache.
  3. Testing: Regularly test your site on different devices and browsers. Tools like Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test and BrowserStack can help.
How do you troubleshoot and debug issues that arise during the development of a custom WordPress site?
Troubleshooting and debugging issues during the development of a custom WordPress site involves several steps. Here are some real-world challenges and specific issues you might encounter:
  1. White Screen of Death (WSOD): This issue often occurs due to PHP errors, plugin conflicts, or exhausted memory limits. Solution: Enable WordPress debugging by adding define('WP_DEBUG', true); to your wp-config.php file to display error messages. Check the error log for specific issues.
  2. Plugin Conflicts: Plugins can conflict with each other or with the theme, causing functionality problems.Solution: Deactivate all plugins and reactivate them one by one to identify the conflicting plugin. Check for updates or consider alternative plugins.
  3. Theme Issues: Custom themes might have coding errors or compatibility issues with WordPress updates. Solution: Use a child theme for customizations to avoid losing changes during updates. Validate your theme code using tools like Theme Check.
  4. Database Errors: Corrupt or misconfigured databases can lead to errors or data loss. Solution: Use phpMyAdmin to check and repair database tables. Ensure regular backups are in place to restore data if needed.
  5. Broken Links and 404 Errors: Incorrect URLs or deleted pages can lead to 404 errors, affecting user experience and SEO. Solution: Use a plugin like Redirection to manage and fix broken links. Regularly check for 404 errors using tools like Google Search Console.
  6. Slow Performance: Poor performance can result from unoptimized images, bulky plugins, or inefficient code. Solution: Optimize images, use caching plugins like W3 Total Cache, and minimize CSS and JavaScript files. Profile your site using tools like Query Monitor to identify slow queries.
  7. JavaScript Errors: JavaScript errors can break site functionality, especially interactive features. Solution: Use the browser’s developer tools (F12) to inspect the console for JavaScript errors. Fix issues by debugging the scripts or checking for library conflicts.
  8. Security Vulnerabilities: Sites can be vulnerable to attacks if not properly secured. Solution: Regularly update WordPress, themes, and plugins. Use security plugins like Wordfence, and implement strong passwords and two-factor authentication.
  9. Responsive Design Issues: Ensuring the site looks good on all devices can be challenging. Solution: Use responsive design techniques and test the site on various devices and screen sizes. Tools like BrowserStack can help simulate different environments.
  10. User Role and Permission Problems: Incorrect configuration of user roles and permissions can lead to security and functionality issues. Solution: Use the User Role Editor plugin to manage and troubleshoot roles and capabilities. Ensure that users have appropriate access levels.
How do you create a seamless user experience (UX) in a custom WordPress site?
To create a seamless user experience (UX) in a custom WordPress site, start by choosing a clean, responsive theme that looks good on all devices. Ensure your site loads quickly by optimizing images and using caching plugins like W3 Total Cache. Simplify navigation with clear menus and breadcrumbs, making it easy for users to find what they need. Use readable fonts and sufficient white space to make content easy to read. Add a search bar so visitors can quickly locate information. Implement intuitive forms with clear labels and error messages. Regularly test your site on different devices and browsers to ensure everything works smoothly. By focusing on these details, you can make your WordPress site user-friendly and enjoyable to navigate.
How do you implement e-commerce functionality in a custom WordPress site?
To implement e-commerce functionality in a custom WordPress site, start by installing a reliable e-commerce plugin like WooCommerce. Set up your store by adding products with detailed descriptions, prices, and images. Configure payment gateways such as PayPal or Stripe to accept online payments securely. Customize the appearance of your store using built-in themes or by modifying CSS styles. Create user-friendly navigation with categories and filters to help customers easily browse products. Implement shopping cart functionality to allow users to add items and proceed to checkout seamlessly. Set up shipping options and rates based on location and weight. Test the entire purchasing process to ensure it works smoothly for users. Regularly update plugins and monitor sales to optimize your e-commerce site for success.
Conclusion
Creating a custom WordPress website involves several key steps. You start by deciding on your site's goals and picking a domain name and hosting provider. Then, you install WordPress, choose a theme, and customize it to match your brand. Next, you add content, like pages and posts, and install plugins for extra features, such as contact forms or SEO optimization. You'll want to make sure your site is responsive and works well on mobile devices. Lastly, you test everything thoroughly before launching your site to ensure it's ready for visitors. And don't forget to keep it updated and secure over time!

2024.05.21 07:59 BatteryLicker Looking for a new backpack for daily use and business travel

I need a new work backpack. I have a half dozen "good quality" backpacks that I've received for free (mix of swiss gear, jansport, custom swag, etc), including my current daily for the last 10 years, but none of them are perfect. In general they have too many pockets and "internal organization features" that are unused and unnecessary. I'm usually able to get rid of one anytime I hire a fresh grad or intern/coop.
I'm looking for a backpack that will last a long time preferably under $200USD, but I can stretch if needed. I have previously sewn my own backpacks (diy/myog) for backpacking and hiking, but I don't have the time.
Uses:
Desired features:
I've looked at prior recommendations on this sub and there are a lot to consider. I've been casually looking for a while, but none I've come across have really been just right.

As we all know, Genshin Impact has been lacking real coop-gameplay for a long time. As of 4.6, we have nothing other than really just farming bosses/domains together, or playing wind-trace.
We are introducing a combat-based Co-op game mode for both casual and competitive players who want to play with friends or meet new people through Genshin.
Genshin Ranked is a project I and the rest of the Ranked team have been working on for months, and it is essentially a 3v3 Co-Op endgame where two teams try to kill a set of bosses as fast as possible. It is playable at any and all investment levels, thanks to the work of our balance team, no matter how much individual players have spent on the game. People who spent thousands of dollars and people who have spent none are able to play together and have fun.
We have a sample game to watch here and you can join our discord here. If you're interested, feel free to join us!

This post is intended as a discussion starter. Please feel free to comment any opinions, ideas, or solutions.
Lost ark has a lot of obsolete or nearly obsolete content. Some are fun, like lower ilvl raids (argos, valtan, vykas, etc.) and others are extremely unfun chores (sailing co-op, adventure islands). I believe one way of making this game thrive is by updating rewards for these systems to make them worthwhile for the current day and age.
To begin with, I totally understand the reasoning behind limiting the weekly gold earning to 6 characters (as otherwise it would be a massive advantage for people with maxed character slots, and gold generation and inflation would get out of hand). But what I don't understand is why does the 18-raid limit exists if the 6-character limit does? Shouldn't it be one or the other? This obviously results in old, low ilvl raids becoming obsolete, despite being very fun. Instead, what I believe would be way better for the game health is reducing the gold earned from lower ilvl raids in a ramping down fashion (for example, if valtan gives 1,800 gold at 1445, it could give 1,400g at 1480, 1,000g at 1520, 800g at 1580, 500g at 1600, 300g at 1620, etc...). This would definitely encourage people to do these old raids for the accumulating rewards, and be fairly balanced if the 3-raids/char limit would be lifted.
Now speaking of sailing co-op (and take this as an example that could be applied to all other horizontal systems in the game). People need to do A LOT of sailing co-op to get sailing maps that are rng-locked behind shipwrecks. But why would anyone be enticed to do so? The sailing mission itself gives dirt rewards, and sea bounty collectable rewards are very dated (10 million silver and a legendary stronghold sailor for the last 4 bounties). Like seriously, who needs those? 10 million silver can be farmed in a couple days with enough characters, chaos dungeons, cube tickets and lopang deliveries; and a stronghold crew is such an underwhelming reward for completing such a tedious and rng intensive grind... I could think of tens of better rewards than this.
Back to sailing-coop, why not add a small gold or materials reward in the end of each sailing mission? It could be little enough to not impact the economy in any weird way (like, 100g per sailing co-coop quest? 400g for the entire thing). This would make me feel that I'm at least accumulating some gold over the time i'm taking to farm those collectibles. Ocean and ships in this game could have way more potential for FUN and REWARDING content that is worth the players' while. We could have more ship skills, open seas net fishing, upgradable ship parts, ocean world bosses where you use ships and damage would scale off your ship upgrades, sea pvp and factions, and a lot more ideas; all could make the ocean a more enjoyable territory of the game.
Last but not least, let me tell you why none of this will ever happen: BOTS. If any old/horizontal/low ilvl systems are improved and made more rewarding, bots will abuse the shit out of them. Bots are why we cannot have good things in the game. (Dear Amazon, we are in a massive need for in-game GMs.)
