2024.05.28 00:01 cyan_violet Is there an unspoken "local sale" culture?

I listed a bass recently for around $350. A few prospective buyers made official offers then asked if I would be open to doing a local sale since they claimed to live in the area and would like to "avoid the fees". I have local pickup as a shipping option, and am always very clear that I'm not interested in selling outside of Reverb, but that I'm happy to do a local pickup if they choose it at check-out.
It's against Reverb's policy to take the transaction elsewhere to avoid fees. I've spoken with their help agents and they easily scan any communication on Reverb to find these kinds of dodgy sales. I've heard they offer the option afterward to pay a fee if the sale was taken outside, though I've never done this. I personally don't want to do this. Meeting up with someone who hasn't paid yet is a waste of my time, and it can only mean that they wish to haggle in person and leverage my time wasted over the sale. They can head over to Craigslist if that's how they want to do business. I take very clear photos in excellent light from every conceivable angle, closeups and full body. I document all flaws and write a no-bs description about the state of the instrument to the best of my ability, always being attentive to my DM's if there are more inquiries.
I even accepted one buyer's offer who I had this clear exchange with about local pickup. They then didn't pay for ~36 hours. I messaged them kindly notifying that I would cancel the next day if they did not pay. They tried to act unaware and said they thought we were meeting up a week later for a local sale. They shouldn't be making offers if they don't plan to pay before meeting. I reported them as well as the other buyer trying to move off-site. The Reverb agent thanked me for reporting the suspicious activity and said they're doing a review of the accounts. Not sure if this was just customer service script or actual gratitude for a violation of policy.
If the item was vastly more expensive I could see how this potentially makes sense for a very serious buyer, if all the proper steps are taken to give Reverb the legal fees they deserve for facilitating part of the sale.
Just wondering if anyone here engages with buyers who want to circumvent fees and do things in person. How do you go about it? Am I off base? Thanks for your opinions.
Edit: Really thankful for all the feedback to get an understanding of how other sellebuyer expectations differ from my own. This is going to help me communicate from a more informed and clear perspective.

2024.05.27 17:03 Professional_Prune11 Human Trauma II----Section Thirty Three: Home Bittersweet Home

What is good buds. It is time for the next chapter of Human Trauma. This time we have Martinez returning home to what no military man fears to see. A letter from someone who is MIA that reads like a final goodbye.
Let's get a fresh baked garlic loaf.
-----
Martinez groaned, turning from handing the keys to the rental SUV to the clerk. A line nearly half a kilometer long of impatient aliens had formed; claws flared, tentacles undulated, and teeth bared.
“Sorry about the delay,” Martinez muttered, slinking out of the way.
It was not like it was his fault the alien meaning the counter, had lost the record of him having rented the vehicle, causing him to have to prove he had through credit statements, his copy of the contract, and showing that he had the damn SUV.
Martinez slipped past the crowd on the thoroughfare and skirted the road's edge, allowing families and taxis to drop off and receive sentients from the Celna aispaceport. Both were almost as densely populated as any street in Draun.
Martinez was already missing the solitude and calm of Nelya’s house—but the navy had assigned him to Draun, so he had to return on time. He would not want to be shipped off to the Iron Spire on Mars to serve brig time for going A.W.O.L(absent without leave)
If rumors about that Navy supermax were to be believed, being on bread and water aboard a starship was a far more pleasant fate.
Pausing before crossing the road and entering the main terminal, Martinez was amazed by the number of aliens in the small port. It was abuzz with sentients going to and from their destinations, paying one another no mind as they did.
Through the large glass windows, Martinez could see even more. If anything, the density inside increased, something that became all the more apparent once he had joined the hellish, flowing waves of aliens inside.
Martinez slowed his pace as he neared the shoreline of the ruckus crowd, scanning over it for his found family. The task was made simple because of the menagerie's treatment of them. The crowd gave the three Aviex in their midst a wide berth, letting Nelya’s bright yellow jacket and poofy pompom hat stand out like the north star.
Martinez quickly adjusted his heading and moved through the turbulent crowd, never losing sight of Nelya. He navigated the crowd with practiced ease, a talent Draun and, more specifically, the Hospital there had taught him.
Breaching through the crowd and into the calm void to join them, Lysa was just wrapping up her goodbyes. She was hugging Kyroll tightly while he did the same; only the mangled half of his face was visible through his daughter's raven hair. If that side of his face was still emotive, without a doubt, it would be overflowing contentment—but alas, all Martinez could see was the slight upturn of his lip.
Before Martinez had recovered from stumbling through the crowd, Nelya had already grabbed hold of him, latching to him tighter than a person trying to break his rib through sheer machismo.
“Little Hunter, please don’t leave!” Nelya whined, pulling Martinez down to her level, hugging around his head, burying his head against her sweater and the plush build beneath. “You two just got here.”
Martinez could not deny that the time they had spent here had flown by, and despite his wish to stay, that was not possible. “Sorry, Kurenla,” Martinez replied, righting himself and returning the gesture, referring to Nelya with the Aviex word for Mother. “We have to go home.”
Calling her that apparently was both the correct and incorrect thing to do for the man. With more force than Martinez thought possible with her seam-splitting build, Nelya reengaged the hug around his chest, causing him to gasp.
“Gruh’ha could get you a job here; Lysa could stay home with me, writing our days away. A big happy Kureal,” Nelya argued. If you could call her explaining, they would be the Aviex equivalent of an extended family unit a argument.
It was not like they all had not accepted that as reality, save for Kyroll, who likely needed more time to warm up to the thought.
“Kurenla, as cherubic as the sounds, ruh’ah has to finish school,” Lysa interjected, patting Nelya’s shoulder.
“You are supposed to be on my side here,” Nelya complained, looking over her shoulder and sticking her tongue out at her daughter, earning a chuckle from both Lysa and Kyroll.
It was pleasant for such a mature woman that Nelya was so open with her feelings. Few sentients would be as expressive. Nelya was so willing to wear her heart on her sleeve that everyone knew what she intended.
“I am. However, I also informed you that I would not strong-arm ruh’ah into moving here,” Lysa said before gesturing at Martinez. “That is up to him once he graduates,”
“Don’t worry, we will visit again. Just after I graduate,” Martinez added, not giving Nelya the chance to make a protest.
Without missing a beat, Nelya’s cunning and ability to move things to where she wanted shined brighter than the sun. “Are we not able to attend?” She said with a bit of sing-song begging while widening her pink eyes, mimicking the cutest kitten eyes he had ever seen.
“Of course you can,” Martinez chuckled, not needing the kitten begging; he would have invited them anyway.
“Thank you, little hunter. I can’t wait to see you two again,” Nelya replied, letting Martinez go but having not completed her onslaught of hugs.
She turned around and grabbed her daughter, who saw it coming this time and met her living ferocity without issue.
As they gave their final heartfelt goodbyes, Martinez turned to Kyroll and gave him a firm handshake.
“Take care of her,” Kyroll smirked, “I know you can.”
“I won't let you down, brother,” Martinez nodded.
“Come on, Nelly. They will miss their flight if we keep them,” Kyroll said, going over to Nelya and Lysa.
Nelya looked at Kyroll and likely was about to argue the point, wanting to insist her dear daughter stay but giving the man a point; he knew Nelya. Kyroll snaked an arm between Nelya and Lysa, twisting her around and planting a kiss on his wife's lips, leaning down over her.
Martinez had never seen how Lysa melts in his arms, but now he thinks he knows what it looks like. In the span of one second, Nelya went from as stiff as a board to clutching Kyrolls shirt, lightly moaning against him, letting him support her as they leaned down.
“I guess we should,” Nelya breathed once the little kiss broke, and Kyroll stood her up and wrapped his arm around her waist.
Lysa and Martinez glanced at each other, neither willing to admit aloud how uncanny the similarities between their relationship and the older couple's were—but they knew.
After another short round of pleasantries, Nelya and Kyroll left, letting Martinez and Lysa get checked in and board the shuttle.
To Martinez’s surprise, the airline did not care that he had a gun now. The weapon just had to be unloaded and in his checked bag. It seems Kyrolls's shaky idea of legality was genuine when he told Martinez about the legality of owning the JKL. The airline representative just wanted to see his Military, GU, or LE ID to confirm he could own it.
Once the dynamic duo were settled in their seats, Lysa lay against Martinez and immediately fell asleep, leaving Martinez to stew in his emotions about what was to come once he returned home.
It was odd; the two times he had returned to Earth after enlisting, returning home was joyous–but Draun was melancholic.
Martinez had hardly thought about work, Shiksie, patients, or the incident since arriving in Celna. But now that he was en route to Draun, it was at the forefront of his mind; the same was true of an expected enemy brief, which made him think of what injuries he would be dealing with.
Martinez was not worried about getting in trouble for throttling Shiksie; she was molesting him and causing a S.H.A.R.P(sexual harassment and rape prevention) officer's worst nightmare.
The only way Martinez could see any backlash befalling him would be if Shiksie had gotten an aneurysm from slamming into the fridge.
“Fuck,” Martinez muttered, realizing this was the first time after texting Ivron he had thought of possible injuries she could have sustained.
In all the chaos and emotions of that night, he did not even consider that she could have died from the impact he gave her. Telling Ivorn was not enough. Shiksie could have sustained a fractured skull, TBI, Internal hemorrhaging, or countless other life-changing injuries.
Had he abandoned her after hurting her? Martinez had no idea how he would cope if that were the case. Yeah, he was not a doctor and did not have the Hippocratic oath—he had something else: the Corpsman's oath.
“I shall do all within my power to show in myself an example of all that is honorable and good throughout my Naval career!” The words of his instructors roared in his mind.
Martinez had said those words like gospel for months in training and afterward at every promotion and follow-on school. Had he fallen so far as to abandon Shikise when she was not only in need but also harmed?
He had beat the fuck out of Marines but still stitched them up, had a beer with and told them it was ok. But he ran away and left Shiksie alone.
The sight of her crying and belting herself as he ran flashed in his mind. If Martinez could take it back, he would—but what else should he have done? He was panicked.
What if that was the last he would have seen of her? She could have died, and he had not for one moment thought of her.
If something happened after leaving her there, Martinez might as well give up on medicine, and he would not deserve to see another patient again.
Martinez’s imagination ran rampant, and he imagined his kind, quirky, and gentle mentor changed because of his actions: stuck with crutches, unable to speak, paralyzed, or even dead—all because of him.
Those thoughts haunted him, clawing at his mind like a razor blade until he reached Lysa’s house in the afternoon.
“Shall I see you tomorrow?” Lysa asked, turning around in the afternoon sun, the light flaring against her raven hair, making her look positively angelic. The only thing since the flight started to pull Martinez back down to earth—or Renoral in this case.
“Maybe,” Martinez replied with a shaky answer.
“Are you positive?” Lysa purred, playfully plucking at his shirt button and fluttering her four blood-red eyes.
“I want to see how studying and work go,” Martinez loathfully choked out.
Lysa lost her flirty attitude and stared at Martinez, plucking his expression apart. It was enigmatic. Her love looked nervous and sad yet had a painful grimace, like someone was driving nails under his skin.
“Are you still upset about Shiksie?” Lysa sighed, knowing Martinez likely said work and studying so as not to name-drop the Farun’se woman.
Martinez froze momentarily when Lysa mentioned Shiksie but quickly recovered and attempted to deflect. “It’s not about that.”
“Oh! Then what might it be?” Lysa pressed, challenging the obvious attempt at avoiding being candid.
“Well, you know, it’s just getting back, getting into the swing of things, and—” Martinez started to trail off, listing things about their daily routines they would be resuming.
If the subject matter were less meaningful to him, Lysa would find the idea of drowning herself in word soup comedic, but in this case, it was annoying.
With each addition, Martinez’s answers became less logical and grew in mundanity. By the time Lysa stopped him, he was going on about folding his laundry.
“Ruh’ah—please cease. I know you must be nervous about meeting up with Shiksie again; considering how you are behaving, it must be niggling you,” Lysa said, draping her arms on Martinez’s shoulders and pulling herself against him.
Nearly instinctually, Martinez wrapped his firm hands around her hips, holding Lysa in place. “Am I that obvious?”
“Just to me. I know you too well, just as you do me,” Lysa whispered into Martinez’s ear, her warm breath rolling past his neck, the beatific care of it burrowing in him.
They stood silent for several seconds while Martinez quantified what he needed to say. Each enjoyed the truth in the statement of knowing the other so well. However, Lysa has been a bit more challenging for humans to read in the last few weeks. It was not impossible, but Martinez had to adapt to her mood swings.
“I figured you would be furious if I mentioned needing to talk to her,” Martinez admitted, moving a hand up Lysa’s back, bringing her into a half hug. “You did say you would skin her alive.”
A smirk crawled up on Lysa’s lips, thankfully not visible to Martinez—she would have looked psychotic. “I did, but she is essential to your life, career, and schooling. I cannot demand you abandon her altogether—that seems a bit—selfish on my part.”
Lysa stepped back and let the cold winter air fill the gap between them. “Could you please seek counsel on how to confront her? Perhaps seek out Ivorn or possibly the doctor?”
Martinez was already planning on getting one of them to broker a meeting between them to help clear the air. Lord knew he had no plans to ever be alone again with Shiksie. It was not because Martinez felt like she was a danger to him; no, Martinez could slaughter Shiksie if push came to shove.
He just felt violated. A line had been crossed, and there was no return to what the world once was. All they could do now was adapt to the new battle space.
“I will ask them,” Martinez assured.
“Marvelous; tell me how it goes, ruh’ah,” Lysa purred, kissing Martinez’s cheek and leaving a trace of her black lipstick just over his stubble.
—--
The walk from Lysa’s house to Martinez’s apartment was not far, only clocking in at a cunt hair over fifteen kilometers. Martinez ran further than that most mornings. But with everything going on in Martinez’s mind, it felt like he was back on Mars and conducting the Joli Rouge again.
The Joli Rouge, a French term for pretty red, was the cumulative event for Corpsmen in the Human Navy. It consisted of three tribulating days of constant marching, triage, physical training, and ruck marches, all against the backdrop of the Rouge desert.
With confronting Shiksie on the horizon, Martinez could not deny the conflict brewing inside him.
Had he not been clear enough? Was staying at Shiksies despite knowing she had set a trap a stupid idea? Each question rolled in his mind, and conjured up a thousand ways to solve the issue. But that was all in hindsight and only made the Human feel more guilty as if he had failed one of his only friends.
“God fucking dammit,” Martinez muttered, kicking a rock into a bush, a small animal scurrying out and chirping angrily at him.
“Well fuck you too,” Martinez said, flipping the squirrel thing off, wanting to tell something o pound sand, even if it's just a random animal.
Once the beast had returned to the bush and Martinez felt no more vindicated, he continued to stew alone in his thoughts—specifically on the incident.
How the hell was he supposed to know the usually level-headed woman would have come onto him like a bitch in heat? He doubted anyone would have ever pictured prim and proper Shiksie doing that. It was so out of the left field it might as well have been an ambush.
Who would blame him for panicking and throttling her? Other than himself, that is.
As if Martinez did not hate himself enough for all the missteps that led to the schism between himself and his mentor, his understanding of the fallout was about to shift from guilt to being unable to deny his culpability.
Once Martinez reached the floor of his apartment, his onus was laid to bear, not in the form of a body or anything he had ever encountered. This time, it was just simple brown boxes. Stacked neatly in front of his door were dozens of boxes, each with his name written in oh-so-familiar, print-like handwriting.
Martinez drew his knife and sliced open one of the boxes, wondering what Shiksie could have dropped off. They were all filled to the brim with the notebooks Shiksie had him use to study from. The same ones she read regularly and had used to pass her college classes several years ago.
At first, Martinez wondered why she had left her notes with him until he started to move the boxes out of the way of the door and found the note taped to his door.
Reaching up with a trembling hand and pulling it down, Martinez swallowed his spit, fearing the absolute worst. While being in the military made him jumpy about suicide, it was for a damn good reason; this would not be the first final goodbye he had to read—and every fiber of him prayed the gut reaction the Navy built into him was wrong.
But seeing the uncharacteristically shaky text on the paper, it was as if the worst parts of his fears had been manifested into reality.
The scrawl was short and to the point and read like it was written by someone about to suck start a shotgun.
Henry, I enjoyed our time together. I hope you did as well. I pray you do well in life. I wish it did not have to end this way. Please forget about me for your sake. Your friend -Shiksie
Martinez sucked in a breath and dropped the note; pulling out his datapad, he texted Shiksie, telling her he was coming over right now, before running back out into the cold Draun evening.
------
So what you all thinking? This chapter is setting up the lowpoint for the trillogy, with the last chapter driving home some stuff about Martinez that even he does not like, but will have to face with what is coming up. I hope you enjoyed. Please do not forget to updoot and comment. I will see you soon for the conclusion to HT2.

2024.05.24 16:46 CISO_Series_Producer Top cybersecurity stories for the week of 05-20-24 to 05-24-24

Below are some of the stories we’ve been reporting this week on Cyber Security Headlines.
If you’d like to watch and participate in a discussion about them, the CISO Series does a live 20-minute show every Friday at 12:30pm PT/3:30pm ET. Each week we welcome a different cyber practitioner to offer some color to the week's stories. Our guest this week is Mike Lockhart, CISO, EagleView.
To get involved you can watch live and participate in the discussion on YouTube Live https://youtube.com/live/MOtO_JTmStQ or you can subscribe to the Cyber Security Headlines podcast and get it into your feed.
Here are the stories we plan to cover, time permitting:
Company that provides admin services to health care insurers discloses 2023 breach Texas-based WebTPA posted an undated announcement on its website that says it was the victim of a data security incident in 2023. Over 2.4 million people were notified, being told that information exposed varies per individual but could include Social Security numbers and insurance information along with standard PII. Financial information such as credit card numbers, as well as treatment or diagnostic information were not affected. The breach occurred between April 18 and 23, 2023, and WebTPA notified benefit plans and insurance companies of the breach on March 25 of this year. (The Record)
Military cyber service proposal picks up steam A group of bipartisan lawmakers on the House Armed Services Committee plan to push an amendment into the fiscal 2025 defense authorization bill calling on the Pentagon to study the establishment of a dedicated military cyber service. This will come in the markup stage of the bill, where all sorts of amendments get added. A similar amendment in a Senate bill was dropped late last year. This amendment would task the National Academy to study the issue. The 2023 National Defense Authorization Act mandated Cyber Command to look at “the prospect of a new force generation model,” but in the past has rejected the idea of creating a wholly new service for cyber defense. Even if this amendment passes, any report conclusions likely wouldn’t influence policy until 2027. (The Record)
Brits to propose mandatory ransomware reporting Recorded Future News’ sources say UK officials will publish proposals calling for mandatory ransomware reporting as well as a complete ban on ransom payments by critical national infrastructure providers. After publication, these proposals would be up for public comment and this legislation remains in its earliest stages. Even if passed, these new requirements could see a delay until the UK replaces its aging fraud and cybercrime reporting platform called Action Fraud. The National Cyber Security Centre hopes mandatory reporting will help give the government full visibility into the scale of the ransomware problem. (The Record)
Rockwell Automation issues ICS warning The company warned customers to immediately disconnect all industrial control systems not specifically designed to operate online, citing heightened geopolitical tension and adversarial cyber activity. Rockwell also reiterated that customers take available mitigation measures against known security issues with ICS devices. CISA also boosted this warning in an official alert. None of these alerts list specific threat actors targeting them. But the coordinated nature of the warnings means it wouldn’t be surprising to learn details about specific attacks at some point. (Bleeping Computer)
Chinese hackers hide on military and government networks for 6 years This threat actor, previously unknown and now dubbed "Unfading Sea Haze" has been targeting military and government entities in the South China Sea region since 2018 while remaining undetected, according to researchers at BitDefender. Its TTP and toolset appears to overlap with other activity clusters, especially APT41. Its attacks involve spearphishing emails that carry malicious ZIP archives containing LNK files disguised as documents that exploit Microsoft’s MSbuild.exe complier. The interesting twist is that the PowerShell script built into the LNK file builds a working directory on a remote SMB server, so that MSbuild will execute the code it contains entirely in memory, leaving no traces on the victim's machine. (BleepingComputer)
NY Stock Exchange owner fined $10 million by SEC The SEC is putting its foot down that nobody or company is above the law. The Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), which owns nine of the world’s largest financial exchanges including the NY Stock Exchange, failed to report a 2021 cyber incident. The SEC claims the financial giant knew a hacker had inserted malicious code into the corporate network but did not notify any of the subsidiary companies for days. This lack of reporting violated federal regulations and the company's own procedures, resulting in this $10 million fine. It should be noted that ICE reported a net revenue of $2.3 billion in the first quarter of 2024. ICE told The Record that the settlement “involves an unsuccessful attempt to access our network more than three years ago and had zero impact on market operations.” (The Record), (Bleeping Computer)
Google AI has a bad week The CEO of AI search tool Perplexity had some fun pointing out some of the inaccuracies of Google’s AI feature, such as its recommendation to put glue on pizza, or its recognition of Batman as a police officer. Google has replied, stating that these responses “are extremely rare queries and aren't representative of most people's experiences," but the company may delay a wider rollout if it continues to produce such errant responses. US agency pledges $50 Million to automate hospital security Hospitals may be getting some relief in the form of funding to better protect against an attack. The US government's Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) has pledged over $50 million to boost hospital cybersecurity through a new program called Universal PatchinG and Remediation for Autonomous DEfense (UPGRADE). This initiative aims to automate the process of securing hospital IT environments by developing software tools that scan for vulnerabilities and automatically deploy patches, all with minimal disruption to patient services. The agency is inviting teams to apply for funding by submitting proposals on four technical areas: creating a vulnerability mitigation software platform, developing high-fidelity digital twins of hospital equipment, auto-detecting vulnerabilities, and auto-developing custom defenses. 2024.05.23 16:32 Choripan_Para_Todos I love my new Dolphin Nautilus CC Plus Robotic Pool Cleaner

I love my new Dolphin Nautilus CC Plus Robotic Pool Cleaner
Hey there, fellow pool owners! I'm here to share my absolute delight with my recent purchase, the Dolphin Nautilus CC Plus Robotic Pool Cleaner. I've had it for a few weeks now, and let me tell you, it's been a total game-changer.
First off, the ease of use is incredible. I just plop it into the pool, press a button, and off it goes, cleaning away like a little aquatic champion. It's got this super smart scanning system, the CleverClean technology, which ensures it covers every inch of the pool, leaving no spot untouched.
The quality of the clean is simply top-notch. It's got these dual scrubbing brushes that really get into the nitty-gritty, and the powerful suction picks up everything from leaves and dirt to the tiniest bits of debris. My pool has never looked or felt cleaner, and it's all thanks to my little Dolphin friend.

Another thing I love is the energy efficiency. The Dolphin Nautilus CC Plus doesn't guzzle up electricity like some other pool cleaners I've had in the past. It's a relief to see my energy bills not skyrocketing, especially during the peak pool season.
And the best part? The time I've saved! I used to spend hours every week cleaning the pool, but now I can kick back, relax, and enjoy my pool to the fullest. It's like having a personal pool cleaner, minus the cost.

I made an app that allows users to Summarize Hard-copy documents using their Camera, OCR and AI!
Snap Summary is a Side Project I created to learn Flutter (A cross platform, mobile app programming language).
It has the ability to scan frames from your phones camera for text which allows users to scan hard-copy documents and virtualize them. Then once the document is virtualized I use AI to summarize the text into a short, concise summary.
The app is very useful for creating summaries of Large Texts, for example text books. Even though the summaries may exclude certain small details the result is a digestible piece of content that gives you a base to work from.
Unfortunately every summary costs me money so I had to make some in-app purchases for credits, but I would love for some of you to test it and give me some feedback so I will be giving away 5 Free Credits to the first 15 people who comment/DM me!
P.S. The app is still in closed testing and only available on Google Playstore so I will send anyone who is interested the testers invite.
Any feedback/comments is appreciated!

2024.05.19 13:18 pillowcase-of-eels [Music] Emilie Autumn's Asylum, pt. 6 – High-concept musician responds to online criticism by waging successful attrition war against her own fanbase

🪞
Welcome back to the Asylum write-up, where we explore the decade-long slow-motion car crash that is the Emilie Autumn fandom.
Sorry this installment took so long to upload! Just a heads-up, I may take some time to deliver the last one too – these posts take forever to format on Reddit's finicky-ass editor, and my dumb real life is currently keeping me from precious Internet time. Thank you for your patience! You have my word that everyone who pre-ordered the final installment will receive a PERSONAL, HANDWRITTEN letter autographed and illustrated by me, a list of the snacks I consumed while composing this write-up, some exclusive behind-the-scenes secrets, and a pony.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4.1Part 4.2 Part 5
Places, everyone This is a test Throw your stones Do your damage Your worst, and your best (...) And if I had a dollar For every time I repented the sin And commit the same crime I'd be sitting on top of the world today (“God Help Me”, 2006🎵)
Quick recap of where we left off. First, there were five to ten halcyon years of pleasant and meaningful interactions between EA and her blossoming fanbase, prominently by way of her official forum. Then, circa 2009-2010, EA's online presence shifted towards sudden anger outbursts, ban-hammering, and an increasingly top-down communication style.
This created a sort of primordial rift within the fanbase, between those who supported EA's right to speak her mind and regulate her own fan spaces however she pleased – and those who thought that her reactions were rude and inappropriate (at best), and that even fan spaces should allow for reasonable, non-abusive criticism of the artist.
Between a poorly-handled book release (see Part 3), the controversial (Part 2) or dubiously true (Part 4) contents of said book, and serious shade from various former collaborators (Part 5), more and more fans had pressing thoughts about EA's work ethic and choices. EA attempted damage control through drastic forum rules that made it virtually impossible to voice any “serious” critical opinion. It didn't work, of course: instead of squashing the mutiny, she created a schism.
Critical fans and active haters started congregating on unofficial platforms.

“WITH MUFFINS LIKE THIS, WHO NEEDS ENEMIES?”: TROLL LIKE A GIRL

So here we were, the early 2010s. The official forum (which had about 700 members in 2006, if you recall) was now thousands-strong, reaching just over 12,000 registered users in 2012 – not all of them active, but still. In terms of sheer numbers and content creation, the party was POPPIN'... but increasingly in parts of the Asylum that escaped EA's jurisdiction, such as Tumblr, where they could speak their mind freely.
You play the victim very well You've built your self-indulgent hell You wanted someone to understand you Well, be careful what you wish for, because I do (“I Know Where You Sleep”, 2006🎵)
In one wing of Asylum Tumblr, a smattering of call-out blogs emerged, which laid out EA's various lies, faux pas, shitty takes, and general deep-seated terribleness in detailed timelines and screenshots (or, short of that, long-winded bullet points). While many such blogs framed it as “serious” whistleblowing and did their best to remain as fact-based and neutral as they could, there was some genuine disgust, animosity and creepiness towards EA on that side of Tumblr; for some ex-fans, “exposing the truth” was mostly justify obsessive hatred, prying and verbal abuse. Some, for instance, felt the bizarre need to side with EA's mother in their estrangement. (One user, with the URL “emilyautumnfischkopf”, argued in a serious and down-to-earth tone - but with zero sources - that EA's upbringing had been nothing but peaceful and supportive until she ungratefully kicked her loving family to the curb for no reason at all. They were later revealed 🔍 to have an alternate handle as “eaisalyingcunt”.)
Either way, through these blogs, a number of potential drama bombs that had mostly flown under the radar were dredged up from over the years – some of which were hard to ignore, even for supportive fans. Where to begin?
There was that nonsense in-joke song, captured twice on camera during the 2009 tour (to very little outrage, at the time), crassly called “Manatee Retard”📺. Or EA's scathing response, in print, to a wheelchair user who found it insensitive that she used a bedazzled wheelchair as a prop to do sexy acrobatics on stage. (“Your offence taken at my hard-won self-acceptance proves that I indeed have something to fight against”, she wrote). Spoken word tracks where she made trivializing knock-knock jokes about serious mental illnesses she didn't have, like schizophrenia and OCD. Multiple instances of calling Britney Spears a “bimbo” and a “Hollywood fucked-up”, resentfully claiming that she only shaved her head because she was “hopped up on drugs” and certainly not because she was “bipolar”, a word the press liked to wield as an insult anyway. (“That's almost like calling someone a retard!” Yeah, heaven forbid.) The meanest, most distasteful paragraphs in the book. Basically everything problematic EA had ever said or written.📝 In retrospect, it had been a long time coming, but it was a lot to take in – and certainly more off-putting, even to less emotionally invested fans, than silly lies about her age and last name.
In another wing of Asylum Tumblr, some fans had had it up to here and just wanted to have fun. 🎵 If Plague Rats had learned one valuable lesson from EA, it was how to crack a joke in the face of absurd tragedy – and the general state of the EA fandom certainly warranted a few.
In 2012, Fight Like a Girl was released. After six long years, three of which had been peaceful, the Opheliac era was officially over. The new album and ensuing tour confirmed that the Asylum had entered a process of glamorous Broadway-style militarization. 🎵📺
The mood board was “Roman general meets Vegas showgirl meets Victorian street urchin”.🪞 The color palette was, to naysayers, “musty pink and rotten, stale piss yellow”. 🐀 The keyword was “REVENGE” (through the power of... self-expression! sorority! brutal assault with rusty medical implements!). The chorus of the title song had an intriguing run-on line about getting “revenge on the world, or at least 49% of the people in it” 🎵 – which seemed like an awful lot, and was widely interpreted (to cheers, boos, or uncomfortable sighs) as a misandrist jab at literally all men on Earth.
The show was essentially a demo version of the musical, in that the setlist vaguely reflected the order of events in the story – but prior reading was essential in order to get what the hell was going on on stage. This one Broadway reviewer had not perused the literature before seeing the show 🔍, and hated: the set, the choreography, the skits, the plot, the lyrics, the music, the concept. (Seriously, you should read the review. It's not even my show and I feel like quitting show business.)
Pre-show VIP encounters, now violin-free, were lorded over by EA's new manager🐀, whose official title was “Asylum Headmistress”. (Interesting choice – she sounds fun!) The swag bags were less substantial than before, and the “greet” part of the meet-and-greet was rarely more than a quick hug and photo op.
On Twitter, EA continued to embrace her “I am very badass” fronting attitude...
Often wonder if cyberbullies r aware they’re fucking w/ a girl who’s BFs w/ maker of the SAW films & is marrying a knife-throwing scorpion. (🐀📝)
...and her taste for needlessly inflammatory statements. About an aisle sign in a supermarket:
If this does not infuriate you, then you're a fucking potato.
(Again with the confounding crypto-ableism, EA! 🔍) She also went through a phase of raging against Lady Gaga 📝, who had stolen her idea of using a wheelchair on stage as an able-bodied woman. 🔍 That failed to convince anyone that she wasn't the histrionic diva that haters made her out to be.
Spurred on by EA's rallying cries and “us vs them” mentality, loyalists turned the white-knighting up to 11. On Twitter, some Plague Rats got into cat fights with Lady Gaga's Little Monsters (what a time to be alive). Others tried to balance out the Tumblr negativity with initiatives like “Spreading a Plague of Love” – a “positive-only” confession blog, whose extreme fangirling, comically drastic rules and hyper-defensive tone📝 did not debunk the increasingly popular notion that “true Plague Rats” were a bunch of authoritarian and hopelessly brainwashed fanatics.
EA truthers and other anti-fans started lashing out at anyone who dared express any positive opinion of EA, solidifying claims that the backlash against EA was just a conspiracy of bitter, hysterical bullies.
All this to say: every passing day brought new reasons for fans to get mad at EA and each other, and everyone in the Asylum was in need of a laugh. It's not easy having a good time.🦠
Leading up to Fight Like a Girl and in the years that followed, user-submission-based meme blogs took off, most notably “Spreading a Plague of Lulz / Troll Like a Girl”. A lot of the early submissions were absurdist humor and toothless, cheezburger-Impact memes (a style that was, oddly, already dated at the time). Those often originated in good fun, and from loyal fans, on the official forum. But there was also true snark, satirizing EA's questionable ethics, outrageous claims, and easily spoofed artistic gimmicks. A new slang of Asylumspeak emerged: Glittertits (slight NSFW), GAGA!!, EA Gusta and all its memeface variants, Get outta mah house!, Are You Suffering?, Fight Like A Goat, [Random celebrity] copied EA (a subgenre in its own right), ...
Most of the “trolling” was directed at unrepentant bootlickers and, to a lesser extent, red-in-the-face haters and creeps. Meme blogs would post joke comments under “serious” or gushing submissions on Wayward Victorian Confessions, and taunt loyalist accounts by tagging them in their posts. When a few people complained on WVC that almost all of the Bloody Crumpets to date had been thin white able-bodied women, and a few fans responded by sharing their dream-casts for a more diverse line-up, the blog was flooded for days with confessions that “X should be a Crumpet” (candidates included RuPaul, Mitt Romney, Nicki Minaj, EA's therapist, and the WVC admins). Farcical shenanigans like that.
Ah, but some people will always cross the line, won't they. EA threads popped up on merciless, bully-friendly snark platforms like Lolcow, Pretty Ugly Little Liar, and Encyclopedia Dramatica. Snarkers with a mean streak and obsessive haters mingled in some of the more aggressive, 4-chan-spirited retaliation against EA – which would be called “brigading” in modern parlance. This included flooding EA's Goodreads page with one-star reviews (see part 4), repeatedly editing her Wikipedia page to include her legal name and birth year, and ensuring that Googling said name would bring up current pictures of her.
All of this compounded agitation fragmented the once-united fandom beyond recognition.🦠 Through substantial disagreements among fans, personal bickerings, layers upon layers of inscrutable in-jokes, and cross-platform telephone games, the Asylum morphed into a booby-trapped Escher room.
Satire blogs were taken in earnest. Earnest fan blogs scanned as satire. Memes would get called out as abuse. Appreciation without attached criticism would get mocked as bootlicking. Obvious jokes made by EA would be taken at face value. One divisive confession could trigger days and days of debate, to the point that WVC eventually banned confessions in response to other confessions. New waves of infighting created a confusing web of rival sub-factions🐀, each accusing the others of being toxic, cliquish, and delusional.
The shared fantasy was broken, the collective vision had crumbled, no onez was speaking the same language anymore. Fans would jump down the throat of other fans who held almost identical views about EA, except for that one thing she said or did that one time. Everyone had differing thoughts on what should or shouldn't acceptable to discuss, question, excuse, make fun of.
War is hell.

SCORCHED EARTH SHENANIGANS: HONEY, I SHRUNK THE ASYLUM

Would you tear my castle down Stone by stone And let the wind run through my windows Till there was nothing left But a battered rose? (“Castle Down”, 2003🎵)
Haters vs sycophants is not really the kind of conflict where one side can come out on top (if you're participating, you've already lost). But in the long tug-of-war between “grassroots” and “EA-sponsored” fan spaces, the ultimate winner is obvious – in that the former is gasping in agony, a shriveled husk of its former glory, while the latter... is non-existent. This is due in no small part to EA's tendency, like the Czars of old, to settle conflicts by setting Moscow on fire.🔍)
That's not entirely fair: unlike EA, the czar only did it that once.
By early 2013, as EA was gearing up for her third Fight Like a Girl tour at the end of the year, the official forum was... not as lively as it once had been. Not just because of the stifling rules and disgruntlement towards EA, or because EA herself hadn't really posted anything on there in years; the Internet was also changing, and forums in general were fast becoming passé.
This made it difficult for EA to create a safe space where she could talk to fans, and fans could talk to and about her, in a way she deemed suitable (ie, a space she could gate-keep and regulate enough to keep it completely free from negative criticism). Social media was a minefield; she still posted regularly, but didn't interact very much. So EA and the Headmistress came up with a way to filter out the unbelievers: an official fan club📝, aptly called the “Asylum Army”, with a $100 entry price.
Joining the AA came with a dog tag, a sew-on patch, and a lifetime membership certificate signed by EA and – for some reason – the Headmistress. (Unlike EA's best friend and sound engineer back in the forum's heyday, I don't think fans ever really embraced the FLAG-era manager as part of the Asylum in-group. She came across more as a coordinator / businessperson / adult chaperone, at best.🐀) So, slightly better goodies than you'd get by joining the other AA 🔍 ... but not by much. The main appeal was that members would have access to exclusive content, special merch, giveaways, early bird tickets for future shows, and regular video chats with EA.
The concept itself drew a fair amount of criticism, as you can imagine. Between the name🐀, the price, and the inherent gatekeeping of a pay-to-join fanclub, many balked at the monetizing of a concept that had once (like, three years back) been significantly more DIY, grassroots, and inclusive. 📝🐀
Then again, many also longed for a positive, drama-free space where fans could just be fans. And while the creation of the AA was generally recognized as a quick cashgrab, a lot of people were surprisingly cool with it. EA was trying to finance her dream musical, after all – although a number of fans wished she had gone about raising funds in a less sketchy way.
So around 400 fans shelled out (which, according to the Headmistress📝, “basically cover[ed] the cost of running the fanclub itself – keeping the database up, website, etc.”). Enough for a close-knit, but sizable community. But already, there was a conflict of interest: a high fanclub entry fee essentially demands that you pledge loyalty to the artist over loyalty to your fellow fans, who wish to join but can't afford to. Sharing, caring, and ensuring no one felt left out were some of the more positive values cultivated in the fandom... but leaking exclusive content would surely piss off other paying members🐀, and make EA feel betrayed all over again. (And she had barely just started to mellow out on social media!)
...But then again, this is the internet. After the first month of secret AA drops (lyric sheets, some photoshoot outtakes – nothing too juicy, really), there were, yes, some leaks. EA was predictably miffed, and retaliated by... ghosting the fanclub for weeks at a time in its first few months of existence (great look!). She eventually found the “solution” to her problem, by providing something you couldn't right-click-save (and which had been part of the promised perks to begin with): live interaction.
Over webcam, she was her usual in-person bubbly, charming, funny self. Everyone seemingly had a good time during the fanclub video chat, and this gave people faith and hope.
There were a few more events, giveaways, etc. As promised, ahead of the fall 2013 tour (the last one to date, it would turn out), AA members got priority access to show tickets and VIP bundles. The latter were much pricier than before, and only included soundcheck, a photo-op, and three goodies: a tin of loose-leaf tea, a signed printer-paper setlist, and a small flag that said “F.L.A.G.”.🔍 Some stuff continued to leak – but, as some of the outlaws pointed out (scroll down to the Disqus comments), they were mostly relaying information that was relevant to the entire fanbase, such as updates about ongoing projects (the dragged-out recording of the audiobook, for one).
In early 2014, lifetime memberships were closed, and replaced with monthly, quarterly and yearly subscription tiers. Bizarrely, you ended up paying $3 more per month if you bought a $99 yearly subscription📝 – but it did include the patch, dog tag, and piece of paper!
Sometimes I kind of want to be part of the cool kids and register to the Asylum Army. Then I remember how it came about, what you could get for the same price a couple years ago, how the whole thing was and is handled, and that I won’t support any of this bullshit. (And then I roll around naked in all the money I’m saving.) (🐀)
Still, a number of fans rejoiced at the affordable monthly option, and joined – if not for the exclusive content and merch (which were... okay, but not much to write home about), then for the friendly, drama-free exchanges with an artist they actually did love, in spite of all the frustration.
For the still-too-poor or still-undecided, there was always the forum! It wasn't as active as it used to be, but a few die-hards still managed to keep the lights on... until, inevitably, Someone Did Something and Ruined Everything. (Once again: EA's wrath is spectacular, but rarely completely unprovoked.) The incident features one notable figure in the Asylum community. Let's call him the Collector.
OK, so maybe you remember the meme I linked to in Part 4, with Christian Grey and the ginormous EA hoard. Well, that's the Collector's collection. The “Violin” promo that I called the "Holy Grail of the fandom" in the same paragraph? Also his. The handwritten lyrics that went for $940? Guess who won that auction. Over the years, the Collector had probably spent five figures on EA merch and shows, and although that fact was a little unsettling, he was a very active, easy-going, and generally well-liked fixture of the fandom.
One day in 2012, shortly after the Headmistress had replaced EA's old Chicago BFF as main forum admin, the Collector's account got banned or restricted over something dumb. When the ban wasn't lifted as quickly as he hoped, he took it... the way one takes things when one is unhealthily invested: he started spamming Headmistress and the mod team with increasingly rambling and abusive emails (lost to time, probably for the best). When that didn't work quickly enough, he tried a different route.
One of the many auctions that the Collector had won, some years prior, was EA's old iPod Touch📝 – which contained all of her favorite tunes and, buried somewhere in the data cache... a phone number. Which the Collector tried calling. And wouldn't you know it: EA picked up. She congratulated him on his sleuthing skills, listened patiently as he made his case, apologized for any distress caused by the unfair account restriction, and then they got married.
Kidding! She freaked the fuck out, hung up, and banned him for life from the forum and all EA shows and events.
After his ban, the Collector allegedly still tried to attend at least one VIP pre-show (one source in the comments says he was allowed to buy some merch, refunded for his ticket, and escorted out). He joined the Reform forum to bitch about EA and try to rally people to his cause, possibly made revenge posts about her on darker snark forums, and continued to hound the Asylum mod team. So in June 2014, EA came up with a radical and unexpected fix to the Collector problem.
The official Asylum Fan Forum has been shut down permanently. I have personally paid thousands of dollars each year to keep the forum safe and secure for you ... Unfortunately, the forum has not been kept safe and secure for me, a truth which disappoints me greatly, instead becoming a place where people who have physically threatened myself and my staff prey upon forum members, pressuring them to contact me and my staff on their behalf. If the gullible wish to humor my stalkers (who live in their parent’s basement at age 30 something) and thus put me in danger, they may do it on their own dime. They may also fuck off, because stupidity can kill, and I won’t be your victim. To those who enjoyed the forum, you know who to thank for its closure. (“On the closing of the Asylum Forum”)
Voilà! This is how a decade-long archive of shared history ends: not with a bang, but with a dirty delete and a sod-off communiqué.
The obliteration of the forum took everyone by surprise...
I was actually on the forum when it was taken down. I was navigating between posts and when I went to click on a different board, an error message came up. I honestly cried a little, I'm not ashamed to say. (WVC admin on Reddit, 2024)
...and I do mean everyone:
Chicago BFF / ex-admin, the next morning: Whoa, EA forum shut down? Ex-mod: It turns out that if someone spends enough years actively “waging war” to destroy what they can’t have, eventually they’ll be successful. * eye roll * Not even mods got prior warning. Just all the sudden, poof, gone. BFF: Really? She did not let the moderators know?! This is sounding worse and worse. Uggh. I’m so sorry. Such a loss. (...) Ok, threats are serious, but why not just put it in archive mode so no one can post? (...) Sad. I shall light a candle in the forum's honor. (Facebook posts; scroll down for screenshots)
It was a gut punch, especially for people who had poured countless hours into the community, or could have used some prior warning to save years of their own writing from the role-playing threads. One last chance to take a look around the place that had meant so much to so many.
From the wording of the announcement of closing the forum and a number of other things, it sometimes seems like EA doesn't like her fans much. :/ (🐀)
Three months after the forum was nuked, Battered Rose (a venerable EA fansite, which had been around since the Enchant era and had one of the most complete EA galleries online) announced that it was shutting down too.📝 The admin, who had also been a long-time forum mod, cited a lack of “time, energy, passion, or money” to keep the website going... and being upset at the sudden disappearance of the forum. It was, truly, the end of an era for the Asylum.
...Well, no point in living in the past. For those who could afford it, and still wanted to talk to/about EA after that (not everyone did 🐀), there was always the Asylum Army fanclub!
Over the summer of 2014, EA held regular live chats and Q&A's, and... many attendees really enjoyed them, and thought the AA was well worth the money after all. She also quietly parted ways with the much poo-pooed Headmistress around that time.
Just spent over 4 hours giggling, drinking tea and playing guessing games in chat with EA and other Asylum Army members ... No griping, no downers, just lots of fun. I think I like the way the ‘new fandom’ is going and now I’m really glad I finally decided to join the Army. (September 4, 2014🐀; Battered Rose had closed the day before)
The forum was lost forever, but perhaps that was a chance for a fresh start. Could this fanclub thing really be the Asylum Renaissance that fans had been longing for?
...I have come today to a very difficult but necessary decision, and that is to discontinue the Emilie Autumn Official Fanclub. The site itself, and the community chatroom, will remain open to you indefinitely, but I will no longer be making updates to the site. (Newsletter, September 8, 2014📝)
...Never mind, then.
Turns out the fanclub had been the Headmistress' idea all along. EA had been reluctant from the start, and although she really enjoyed the live chats with a safe community of people “who are there for the right reasons”, she couldn't overcome her fundamental discomfort with the concept. Lifetime and regular members would receive a bunch of digital downloads and a -35% coupon on the Asylum Emporium for their troubles. EA said she would definitely pop back once in a while for live chats, for free, just for fun, but to my knowledge, she never did.
And so the most devoted fans were left standing in the rain...
She is happy, she made it. She is fulfilling her dreams, found love and happiness after all the pain. I understand that she now doesn’t need “us” anymore ... That doesn’t change the fact she broke my heart with taking the Asylum Army and the forum from me. Yet, I am happy for her. (🐀)
...while naysayers pointed and laughed, Nelson-style.🦠
I don’t feel sorry at all for the people that paid for the Asylum Army fan club. Most of them knew that EA is an atrocious business woman and has broken many promises before. In fact, I laugh at them. They seriously thought that EA would actually stay consistent with this? (🐀)

EVERYTHING MUST GO: THE ASYLUM WHOLESALE

EA fans were left without an “official” home for about three years. This gave them plenty of time to be annoyed at EA for: not releasing the audiobook on time, not materializing any new project for a while... and the new sin of peddling random, ridiculously marked-up AliBaba jewelry as “merch” on her official store. Think faux-antique cameo pendants and $30 Big Ben rings (...because the Asylum story is set in London, get it?).
The whole accessories section looks like a tacky overpriced English souvenir shop. (🐀)
The fanbase lost a lost of steam in those in-between years, because there wasn't much to stick around for. As evidenced by the positive reception of the AA live chats, even in the midst of unresolved drama, out-loud interactions in a friendly environment have always been EA's saving grace. Considering the amount of online hate, there are shockingly few accounts of bad IRL encounters with EA: most people say that in live conversation, she comes across as a fun, warm, and genuinely sweet person. Some report that their negative opinion shifted after meeting her.
But there were no chats or live shows anymore. There was only social media, where she ignored questions and vague-posted about overdue projects – and the newsletter📝, which was all saccharine love-bombing to promote bland dropshipped trinkets. For fans who remembered the handcrafted merch (and two-way communication) of the early years, it was a bitter pill to swallow.

Dear Fighter Pilots, Partners and Friends,
For the next DCS update, we are preparing eagerly-awaited new features such as the FCR Zoom and C-Scope for DCS: AH-64D and FCR and TADS LINK. These features make the AH-64D an even more deadly force on DCS battlefields by increasing situational awareness and enhanced target identification.
Patricio Massun is a 3D artist from Argentina who created a free asset pack for DCS that contains a variety of ground models, fortifications, and airfield assets. Please join us in thanking Massun for his help to include these directly into DCS. We are testing the models and plan to include them in DCS for free!
Furthermore, the DCS: F-5E Tiger II has received various enhancements such as the RWR improvements, more realistic radar ground clutter, and the addition of the AIM-9J Sidewinder. Please read the details below and stay tuned!
Thank you for your passion and support.
Yours sincerely,
Eagle Dynamics

AH-64D Update Overview - Upcoming Update release: 21 May, 2024.

For the next DCS update, the AH-64D will see the addition of three important features: the Fire Control Radar (FCR) Zoom and C-Scope functions and the LINK function for the FCR and TADS. Both are incredibly useful when engaging targets.
The Zoom function allows you to zoom-in on the FCR Next to Shoot (NTS) target at a 6:1 ratio, or you can use the display cursor on the FCR page to select an area to zoom in on. This is very useful when engaging closely grouped targets.
The C-Scope function, also selected from the FCR page, allows you to place FCR target identification symbols on both your Helmet Mounted Sight and the CP/G TEDAC display. This is an invaluable tool for building situational awareness, and AH-64D players without an FCR installed can still see these symbols using the datalink. Both items are previewed in this DCS: AH-64D FCR ZOOM & C-SCOPE video.
The next update will also introduce the sight select LINK function to the AH-64D. This allows both the CP/G and Pilot to slave the TADS video to the FCR NTS. This will allow you to visually identify FCR targets through the TADS prior to engagement and allow you to perform battle damage assessments after an engagement. LINK also allows you to slave the FCR to the TADS.
You can learn more about LINK here DCS: AH-64 FCTADS LINK

A favorite of Cold War pilots, the DCS: F-5E Tiger II is a very capable, twin engined, light-weight fighter with excellent close combat and ground attack characteristics. This beautiful aircraft was easy to deploy, maintain and operate and much loved by its pilots. For the next DCS update, we’ve made several improvements based on your feedback.
These include:
  • The Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) now displays radars in search mode.
  • Ground clutter on the radar is now more accurately represented based on altitude and scanning elevation.
  • We’ve added the AIM-9J version of the Sidewinder air-to-air missile.
  • TACAN operation with no weight-on-wheels has been corrected.
  • It is no longer possible to uncage the AIM-9B Sidewinder in pre-launch mode using the Missile Uncage Switch.
We hope that these F-5E improvements will further your enjoyment and make the F-5E an even better addition to upcoming Flaming Cliffs 2024.
Thank you again for your passion and support,
Yours sincerely,

2024.05.17 15:35 Matthew-Nolan Grangemouth Lego Bricks

Grangemouth bricks are highly coveted pieces of LEGO history. Many collectors have heard the legends behind their production, but what’s the real back story?
To unravel this tale from half a century ago, first hand memories and documents from the 1960’s & 70’s have been combined to provide unprecedented insights below. These interviews included a former Grangemouth plant Physical and Colour Technician and a Shipping Clerk, as well as recollections from children of former employees that received bricks from the plant.
The story begins in 1961, when Anchor Chemicals in the UK formed a joint venture with Marbon Chemical of the USA, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Borg-Warner Corporation. It established the first major UK plant for the production of ABS (acrylonitrile, butadiene, styrene) polymers. This new plant was strategically located in Grangemouth, as butadiene and styrene were already available there. These thermoplastics were to be marketed as “Marbon Cycolac ABS” by Anchor, who were already Marbon's sole British distributor.
Two years and six million pounds later, the Grangemouth plant was completed by Constructers John Brown Ltd in 1963. Located on a 40 acre site fronting Bo'ness Road, it produced ABS polymers through emulsion polymerization for vacuum forming or moulding into domestic appliances, telephone handsets, automotive components, vacuum cleaner parts and much more.
The acrylonitrile, butadiene & styrene were piped in liquid form to the plant from the large British Petroleum (BP) Chemicals facility across the road, delivered through underground pipes below the intersecting road. The acrylonitrile was made by Border Chemicals, butadiene directly by BP Chemicals and styrene by Forth Chemicals. Border and Forth received their raw materials from BP and their facilities were co-located with BP Chemicals. Colour pigments were provided in powder form by Imperial Chemical Industries (I.C.I.).
The LEGO Group (TLG) made British company Courtauld’s Corp the UK Licensee for LEGO in 1960 under the name British LEGO Ltd. After two years of importing LEGO parts from Denmark, local LEGO part production in the UK commenced through a new factory in Wrexham, Wales. TLG had simultaneously switched to ABS plastic in 1963, and Marbon’s Grangemouth plant was selected as the ABS supplier to the new British LEGO factory located in Wrexham.
The Grangemouth ABS plant operated 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It’s primary roles in ABS production was to extract fire-retardant inhibitors from the three individual raw ingredients, mix and heat them to produce ABS pellets in any selected colour with added pigments. The plant’s main extruder used in production had mixing tanks, a large hopper for raw materials, and a screw mechanism at the base which pushed the molten mixture through a steel plate with holes in it. This produced long round strips of ABS, which were put through a dicer to cut them up into pellets. These pellets were put into 25kg bags and palatalised for shipment to Wrexham by truck.
The TLG quality requirements were very high, and above the standards or specifications of other customers. The colours in particular had to be perfect. It was clearly understood that if any batches were sent that didn’t meet TLG specifications when moulded out at Wrexham, they would be returned, which happened very rarely.
To assist with maintaining high standards of quality control, the plant owned an injection moulding machine. Situated in the Testing Lab, it was utilised by the Physical and Colour testing teams. Both teams operated on four shifts. Initially each team was comprised of four people each per shift, with this increasing to five people in the 1970’s as production levels rose. The Physical team used the moulder to test ABS flow rate for each batch, ensuring it filled all the mould cavities, as well as impact and tensile strength. The Colour team used eyesight to match ABS batches with colour swatches, as colour spectrophotometers weren’t in use at the time.
Starting in the 1960’s, TLG provided the Grangemouth plant with a sequence of 2x4 LEGO brick moulds for testing ABS in their injection moulding machine. From bricks subsequently found locally in the area, we know these included old production moulds, such as a twenty slot D mould and a 20 slot Y mould. Bricks from a four slot 8-11 mould have also been found, that mould was made from old parts but was specifically assembled for use in quality testing. More moulds may have been used during these early years at the plant. Around 1968 a final mould arrived, it was a four slot F mould, that was purpose built for quality testing.
LEGO test bricks were made by workers in the Testing Lab, and these were largely solid colours solely for ABS batch testing. Mixing of colours did sometimes occur between colour changes, resulting in small quantities of marbled bricks. To clear mould injectors of prior colours, natural ABS without pigment would be passed through. This produced another type of marbled bricks, with a unique cream colour mixed in. Bricks that failed physical and/or colour testing quality standards were called “Rejectable”.
Test bricks were supposed to be recycled, turning them back into pellets by chopping them up into small pieces, melting them down and putting them through the ABS extruder again. These pellets were not used by TLG, but instead sent to factories outside the UK, mostly in China. Some Testing Lab staff found these test bricks popular with their children, and at times took them home rather than recycling them.
Starting around Christmas 1970, Grangemouth plant Management decided to complement the seasonal gifts of whiskey and turkey to staff with something very unique. The whiskey was seen as being for the men, and turkey for their wives or female employees, but there was nothing for the employee’s children. So this year, they added a bag of LEGO bricks made at the plant as a present for each of the employee’s children.
Testing Lab staff were tasked with producing and bagging the Christmas bricks using the F mould. This first utilised waste pellets, which came from batches rejected for minor reasons and pellets from completed batches that were no longer needed for testing. These were then supplemented with production pellets as required to produce enough bags of bricks. For ease of production, large amounts of pellets were put into the injection moulder hopper irrespective of colour. It was set to automatic, continuously producing bricks until empty and creating the marbled bricks collected today. Most bricks made through this process were marbled as a result of the screw mechanism at the bottom of the hopper mixing pellets, but some single colour bricks were produced. Gifting of these bricks became an annual Christmas tradition. Staff without children didn’t receive a bag of these bricks.
It additionally became understood by employees at the plant that if they wanted some bricks for their kids, they could ask a member of the Physical and Colour Testing teams for some. The bricks given out this way were only the test bricks available at the time of request. Recipient staff didn’t get to choose colours, or to have them specifically made upon request. This was utilised sporadically by staff from management down and were typically only bricks of a single colour. Eventually TLG heard about the misuse of their mould, and staff were advised TLG weren’t happy.
TLG returned the production of bricks in-house in early 1979, ending their need for Grangemouth produced ABS. This decision was unrelated to misuse of the mould. With the Wrexham factory ceasing production, and Grangemouth ABS no longer needed, the F mould was returned to TLG from the Grangemouth plant in late 1978. The Christmas bricks for employee’s children were made for a final time in 1978.
The Grangemouth plant injection moulding machine remained at the plant and continued to be used for testing ABS until 2009 when the plant closed. It was primarily used to produce a 6cm x 1cm plate for impact and colour testing. This moulder is currently held by the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, having been donated by the plant’s final owner SABIC. The Grangemouth plant on Bo'ness Road was demolished in 2011.
