2020.05.02 07:20 DoseofDhillon A Look Through of the Presentation and Directing in Fire Emblem. Part 1: Sprite Cloud
“Guys who cares about presentation? It’s all about gameplay and story, everything else is irrelevant” Are things I hear a lot in this community. Presentation and direction seems to be the least cared aspect when it comes to Fire Emblem. Personally speaking the importance of presentation and directing can't be undersold. Video games are the piece of media you spend more time with then anything. Your average movie is about 1.5-3 hours while your average game could be anything from 10-100 hours, as much as you have to have fun with what you're playing, the eyes are also going to need to see something stimulating. Not to forget how much good presentation and directing could change how you feel about a scene. Compare something like (Three Houses BL Post Chapter 17 spoilers) Rodrigues Death to something like (Awakening spoilers) Emmeryns and see how much good directing and animating can add to the feeling of a game. In this post we’ll be looking and assessing the presentation and directing of fully Spirite FE games through its history and evaluating them against each other and other games around there era.
KAGA ERA
FE1 and 2 for the time they came out presentation and directing wise were doing things. The cut away to battles, the unique animations for important characters, the wide variety of music and sprites. For the NES this is pretty decent, not to say 1990 IS was doing anything radically different though. Creatures/Nintendo (Earthbound Zero), Square, (Final Fantasy) and Enix (Dragon Warriors Quest) were basically doing the same things, this was the new genesis of gaming and the first era where stories with actual narrative depth could be told but i still find a lot of impressive stuff from IS here. A story told through AI action is something that was very rare back in the day and IS is one of the earliest companies I know that did this. Things like Minerva’s AI in FE1 come to mind, one of the best early examples of story told through gameplay for the NES and especially one of the most interactive stories of that time, phenomenal directing in the NES era. It's the stand out moment from FE1's directing 2 and probably the most understated part of Minerva's characters. Phenomenal stuff from Terasaki and Kaga.
FE3 is just a solid upgrade, using and experimenting with colours and portraits, looking a lot like Final Fantasy 4, but like every game until the mid SNES era, they were way behind in house Nintendo (Super Mario World, A Link to the Past). What FE3 does introduce are the map introductions and abuse of that SWEET SWEET Mode 7. God nothing gets me more unreasonably hyped than Mode 7, and best mode 7 is useless mode 7. It does show that they were using new tech and trying new visual tricks to keep the player more engaged with what's happening, even if it was for an exposition dump. Its a smart use of new tech and a great way to bring the player new information during the story.
However the 2 stand outs from the SNES era would be Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776. Genealogy is the first game in the franchise that I think finds a tone visually. Everything was darker and more subdue, the castles were these big things that took over 4 squares giving them this size, new sprites for everything in the game much faster and flashier animations, and more distinct portraits than ever before, Thracias looking down right incredible in all these aspects improving in FE4 in some of them too. The 2 things that stand out most are the actual attempt at cutscenes and the music. Cutscenes like Aideen’s map sprite actually slowing down her Verdane kidnappers, the pwnage of one Midir, Byron sprite doing the same to show him slowly falls apart after years of running away, so close to his son, or the master class that is FE4 Chapter 5’s end scene, are all simply just wonderful. What’s even better about FE4 and especially 5 is that music. Yuka Tsukiyoko, series famous composure when talking about FE4’s soundtrack highlighted how many songs were cut because Kaga rewrote the scenario and story a bunch. What this basically means and what we can tell from FE4 and 5 is Kaga probably had a huge focus on music fitting the atmosphere. FE4’s sound track is massive, along with 5’s very serious tense music, even having tracks play only when you lose a character, just for that feeling to sink in. Enemy phase songs, player phase, victory songs, and my favourite example of this, FE4 Chapter 5 Doors of Destiny capturing the continue march and tragedy of that chapter, and having 4 different fantastic songs play as the story takes its twists and turns for the final scene in chapter 5, one of those 4 songs even being hand picked for a smash remix. I think that alone shows just how great the audio directing was in those 2 games because arguably 5’s could be better in that aspect (I think it’s 4 but ya can’t go wrong with either). Both these games last the test of time and still hold their own against the greats, whether it be FF6, Chrono Trigger, and so on when talking about solely presentation. Cap that off with fantastic storytelling through gameplay in both jugdral games and ya know what? That Kaga did pretty fucking good.
GBA ERA
The GBA games are all pretty much the same, with a few things being different in Sacred Stones. Moving away from the dark dury feel of Jugdral we get light colourful and eye popping GBA games, taking advantage of the visual upgrade the GBA has. A change which although was controversial at the time, reflected in the series change in tone well and was a net positives for those games. Portraits more detailed and being able to see more of the characters in the map sprites then ever vs 4 and 5 is a welcome change and gives the characters even more of an identity. I also feel like they use more tools for their storytelling, such as multiple portraits for emotion, better and more use of stories told in gameplay battles (the jobbing of Cecillia or the iconic Lyn crit) and of course how can we forget, those fucking battle animations, just the best parts about the GBA games by a long shot and add so much to game. What these games do introduce new to the franchise are CGI art pieces. These do add a good amount to the story and contextualize scenes in a simple and satisfying way, not abused to the point where they feel forced, almost being mini rewards for playing the game. Overall a lot of really strong stuff. Shout outs to like 3 scenes in GBAFE where the text box turns black and the actual text itself turns white, that shit is awesome
As for music, although not as atmospheric and tone setting as 4 and 5, it still does a really good job at capturing the emotion of the gameplay segment most of the time. What does however take a turn is the quality, FE6’s sound track being the first out right not good OST in the series, we see IS fail to adapt to the limiting straight up bad GBA sound chip for 6. The hardware limits were just a bit too much, which is as much as the GBA’s fault as it is IS’s. 7’s and 8’s do go get better OST wise but 7 also fails at getting good looking maps. The maps in 6 are pretty shaky to say the least and 7’s doesn’t do much to improve that. FE8 although is where things step up, a new better pallet which tones down the bright colours for a more classic Fire Emblem feel and really captures a much better overall feel for the game. Cleaning up on maps as they just feel a bit more detailed in 8. Add some really strong and different stuff done with Lyon in there too for bonus. 8 is by far in my opinion is the best of the 3 and one of my favourite FE presentation wise, directing wise it does feel really samey. At this point in time IS is basically a leader in the industry when it comes to the Gameboy advance. Besides the Zelda games I honestly think FE8 might be one of the best looking games on the GBA (Perhaps haven’t played enough GBA games so I could be very off base, but i never felt like going from Metriod Zero Mission or Fusion to FE i was in for a downgrade....unlike later). They’re very strong entries and are IS at maybe its best
DS ERA
Uggghh, so all conversation around DSFE presentation has been ruined for me because of a stupid meme thrown at people when the presentation of the DS games came up back in the day. It was done just to connect the idea with thinking the presentation devalues the experience of the DS games with something stupid, so that you feel stupid for having that issues with DSFE presentation. (Yes the “no Ike” meme.) This memes also exists because if you're a DS fan you heard what I'm gonna say 1000 times and are tired of it. If you're not you likely avoided it because what I'm gonna type. I’ll keep it really short, 12 looks better but still bad, what the hell are these colour choices, why are they trying to be a philips cdi game sometimes. They look really bad, those portraits look god awful, the maps look bad, I personally don’t like the DS remixes of the songs, the animations and in battle stuff look bad and why are everyone's eyes hidden in the CGI’s? The CGI’s are just ugh and remind me of Hentia. Plus there's so fucking many of them in 12
What hasn’t been brought up is the directing, it's abysmal. Besides that one scene where you have to sacrifice a unit, another one of 12’s great retcons, it's legit just the SNES game. It's one thing to look the way you look, but there’s nothing in the directing which takes advantage of the technology of the DS or breathes new life into the story. GBA games had GBA animations it abused and good CGI’s, SNES a whole bunch of things, 11 and 12? What do they actually do to upgrade the experience of the game? They took out the seize in the final map of book 2. Better directing? I’ve always said “If you don’t care about Marth all that much like I did in 11, there's nothing else to really like about the story” and a lot of that is just how there's no visual flair, no interesting ways it's told through directing, it's just a bad marth portrait saying his character motivations and arc to you. It's a remake of the game yet does nothing in its presentation to remake its story, and unlike the GBA, this isn’t a hardware issue. You look at square, or Capcom or hell even lesser small companies use the capabilities of the DS so well. Pokemon Black and White moving sprites or even the really interesting environments of Gen 4, the FF Remakes, the Dragon Quest remakes, so many games doing storytelling stuff with the dual screen, fuck people were doing FMV’s on the DS. I could go on and on with examples of how well people used the power of the DS during that gen (Remember power, not IGN RD "no motion controls" gimmick thing, power) and how IS felt 10 years behind its competition in every aspect. FE3 at least tried with mode 7, here uh, i guess Hardin theme sounds like a pokemon battle? I would really like to know what in the directing was better in 11 and 12 then in book 1 and 2, Honestly i don’t see anything, it has no visual style, any visual swagger, anything memorable, nothing interesting done with the camera control they had, no use of actual 3d models, and it was just plain old, for a lack of a better term, ugly. (Hey i used the word hahahaha)
2D era of FE besides the DS basically did what other companies were doing, and all the way to 8, were keeping up with the best of the best. Their directing was alright, the best at 4 and 5 imo, and all the games had good looking parts to them. No ifs or buts or even “good for Fire Emblem standards” “good for IS standards” just straight up good, in till the DS. All of these games are pretty much the same when it comes to directing, the stands out being Jugdral and 8 for good reasons, and umm, DS for bad reasons, but the directing for the most part and the execution in its storytelling is all pretty decent.
I couldn’t cover everything, but I did cover what popped up to me, so sorry for any errors. Well that concludes part 1, the 2D stuff of FE, next time we get to talk about the 3D stuff and there's so much more interesting things to dive into, like too much. Thanks for reading.

2018.12.03 20:36 PocketWaffler A Friend of mine that doesn't know how to use reddit wanted me to price out a PC for him. Not being very build literate, I figured I'd come to the pros.
What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
Gaming is one, of course. He also does programming quite a bit using a development environment called DrRacket. He also needs to do 3D modelling of some sort. To quote him "three dimension LiDAR detection and analysis"
Programs he also uses are ArcGis Suite, AutoDesk, and Unity
Also "3D porn hentia modeling of course /s"
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
This is in Canada, and I'm not overly familiar with exchange rates, but he's told me $1500CAD MAX, so that rounds to about $20 USD. Keep in mind that it's $1500 MAX, so if there's more bang for your buck in a $1000 machine, that's cool too.
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Any time. He's not in dire need of a PC currently, but would ideally like to pick the parts up when(if) they go on sale for boxing day. Trying to get a good estimate on what he wants/needs/price.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
The whole shebang. Mouse, keyboard, 2 monitors, usb buttplug. You know, the usual.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
This is in Ontario, Canada; the land of overpriced everything. And in the area we live in, there's no computer stores that don't double the retail price of everything.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Nothing's being reused.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
No real plan to overclock.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Nothing special.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Nope, as long as it isn't a pile of rainbow vomit it'll be cool.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
Copy of windows 10 should be thrown in, yeah.
