2024.05.14 03:52 iridescentjillyfish Cat with history of bladder stones isn't drinking enough water - help!

NOT looking for medical advice! My cat has a great vet team - just looking for anecdotal advice and tips and tricks on how to manage to get my cat to drink more water lol
Quincy is my 8 year old FIV+ cat - we rescued him 6 years ago and he's had nearly all of his teeth removed and, last October, had surgery for calcium oxalate bladder stones after urinating in shoes, on bags, on carpets, and finally, on tiles. After his surgery, he's had no behavioral problems since - yay!
Because he's a senior and FIV+, he goes to the vet twice a year. He went late last week and his labs look good, he's physically healthy and doesn't have a bladder stone recurrence yet. The issue is that his urine is very acidic and concentrated - we want it to be alkaline and diluted so this is obviously not good.
He was prescribed Hills c/d Urinary Stress food but we think he's been snacking on our dog's food and treats which has disrupted his strictly prescription diet. We're going back in about a month after going on full lockdown (no treats, no extras, no nothing besides his kibble) and getting his urine retested to see if there's improvements.
Here's some things we've tried:
The vet says we're basically needing to increase his water intake or we'll have to switch his food (again), give him oral supplements to make his bladder more alkaline, or do fluid replacement. We're happy to give him a different food but the rest we'd like to avoid.
We can't do water flavorings and have to feed him exclusively prescription food so no water-heavy supplements like tuna, etc.
Have you had any successes getting your cat to drink more? I'll do anything!

2024.05.14 03:24 Upstairs-Pound-7205 The hidden problem of "minimum grade" rules.

Edit:Fixed some formatting errors and grammatical errors.
I know that I am not alone in being in a district that has a "minimum grade" policy. In our case it is a minimum 50 with a passing grade of 65. Like most districts, this is being sold as a way to "smooth out" grades to avoid an outlier grade like a 0 tanking someone's average to the degree that it is unrecoverable.
After some thought (and I'm sure I'm not the first person to think this) I realized that most insidious part of this policy.
Let's consider a scenario with two students. One student (student A) completed 0% of the work - they missed every assignment and did not engage with the lessons whatsoever. Another student (student B) did 52% of the work - they did about half the effort required for complete mastery. Let's assume the district has a "minimum 50" like we have.
How do you grade this fairly/appropriately?
Student A gets a 50 ->Gets the lowest grade possible Student B gets a 52 ->Gets the grade they earned, but wasted all but 2% effort doing anything. This results in the original output - both students fail and have to work to bring up their grade, but student A gets a much better deal for having done nothing at all.
Student A gets a 50 ->Gets the lowest grade possible Student B gets a 76 (+52% of range between 50 and 100) This results in some recognition for student B's effort in getting 52% of the work done, but it puts them in a C range where it normally would have been an F. Forcing grade inflation on students who never needed to "smooth the outliers" in the first place.
or some other approach?
If I were student B in scenario 1, I would feel like there was no point in trying anyway. In scenario 2 though, it would signal to parents and other people who use that data that the kid is more competent at a given subject than they actually are. In any event, it really creates a terrible situation for data transparency and accuracy.

2024.05.14 03:15 Katie-Stella Experiencing constant urge to urinate

I'm 26F and BRCA1 positive. For the past 2 weeks, I've suddenly been experiencing a constant urge to urinate. It's just like this uncomfortable pressure type of feeling in my bladder. I feel like I am peeing pretty often, but even after I go, it still feels like I need to go more. But there's not really any pain, it's just discomfort. I took an at-home UTI test and pregnancy test and both came back negative. I've never really had this experience before.
I had been drinking apple cider vinegar every day for a couple of weeks, but I stopped it to see if that was possibly the cause. However, the sensation has not stopped at all. I started birth control pills for the first time 3 months ago and so far, my period has been not super regular.
Of course, being BRCA-positive, I'm super freaked out about the big C. I have an OBGYN appointment in a week but I'm super anxious and wanted to see if anyone else has ever had this symptom before. I just had a pelvic ultrasound 5 months ago that came back normal and a CA-125 test 3 months ago that also came back normal. But of course I'm still filled with anxiety and want to get tested again.
Any advice would be much appreciated!

2024.05.14 02:47 alchyseltzer Too sensitive for retinol oops

I have super sensitive skin and I’m 37 and should know better since this is not the first time, but I just kept thinking maybe it was the brand.
I used the Kate Somerville retinol + vitamin C and my face is bright red. I have not been wearing makeup and using gentle cleansers over the past couple days, but now it’s starting to peel. I’m scared if I do a light exfoliation it will only exasperate the issue. Should I just continue with lotion? How do I make this better.

2024.05.14 02:45 Gold_Act2 Anyone have a feeding tube without a proper diagnosis? Down to 135 lbs at 5'11" (~30 lbs drop) without exercise, severe stomach pain they can't figure out, hard to eat and drink since 2022..

And yet they're sending me to an eating disorder clinic and possibly diagnosing me with ARFID.
The stomach issue started after a whole year of daily pain meds, which are known to cause gastritis... but because I'm intolerant to PPIs, I haven't been able to get it under control. Any time I introduce greens or something new to my diet, besides potatoes or chicken, I get burning and pain.
I'm now vitamin B12 and D deficient, and I feel very malnourished because I haven't had anything green to eat since 2022. Every time I try, regardless of what it is, how it's prepared, etc, I just get stomach pain for days. I've tried everything under the sun in terms of supplements, etc.
Medication known to irritate the stomach lining makes the pain so much worse, so I can't take the meds I need for my other chronic condition.
They really want to avoid ANY feeding tubes, but I feel like a trial of the NJ could help get nutrients in. Maybe the malnutrition is contributing to the lack of healing? They just don't want to give it to me without a gastroparesis diagnosis, and the weight loss isn't shocking enough. Any ideas on how to go about this? I've gone through 3 dieticians who just talk about the elimination diet and my family doctor doesn't have any patients on a feeding tube.

2024.05.14 02:44 Remote_Year3642 Help! Well water and swimming pool chemicals

Help! Well water and swimming pool chemicals
So we manage (as volunteers) a 160,000 gallon residential pool. We have a well that we fill with. It’s basically an endless supply of water as I can drain and fill 3 times in less than two weeks.
Our problem is we have a few leaks (we are still actively locating through a third party company) and lose about 2” of water a night. I’m not looking for information on the leaks right now but mainly the following problem.
I have everything perfectly balanced and within the suggested limits for all chemicals, other than my cyanuric acid is extremely low and my phosphate level was a little high but just treated that last week and are in normal range below 100 PPB. Low cyanuric was intentional as a test to see if it played a part in our issue.
With that said, every time I add the well water, which is every morning right now, the water turns a deep green. Not an algae green per se but more of a “metallic” green for lack of better word. We battled this last year and somehow we just stopped having the issue after a while and I can’t remember what we did differently.
Currently, when the water turns green (starts in the deep end where the well water is being added) it takes about an hour from start of adding new water for a perfectly crystal blue pool to turn fully green.
I’ve taken multiple water samples for testing from the clear, the green, the well water itself, the backwash water etc. all of them show virtually non existent metal content. However, when I use sc 1000, the water clears up the next day. But as soon as I add well water it’s back to green. Also, if I add a lb of vitamin c, the pool turns back clear blue within 15 mins. You can watch it turn, but again, when I add water it turns back green.
I gutted the pump room this year and went from 4 DE filters to 4 glass media filters. We are also running a pulsar auto feeder with calcium hypo brickets feeding the pool. We took out our tricolor feeders and no longer use tablets.
With using the sc1000, the CL has been low due to it zapping it but not below a 2. When I was bringing the chemicals up initially I put shock in and it turned the pool green within an hour.
Does anyone have any insights? If I’ve left something out I’m happy to elaborate, we have tried so many things lately and just not sure what to do next.
The green pictures were taken before I vacuumed. I vacuumed and then put in vitamin C and took this blue pictures 25 mins after it was as green as the pictures.

31yr old (m)
Will my hair still improve or at least get back to what it was after stopping Minoxidil for 3-4 months? How long will it take?
Is the Minoxidil causing more shedding to replace weaker hairs? Or did I really mess up by stopping in the first place?
I have been using Dutasteride once a week, derma roll once a week, Biotin daily, and used a compound spray daily (Finasteride, Minoxidil, Melatonin, Vitamin D) for over 2 years. In January one night I used the derma roll too deep and it resulted in excessive shedding the following days.
I told my family doctor what happened, but also expressed the frustration of the spray, making the scalp sticky, routinely only being able to use once a day instead of twice, I didn’t like that it had cost $120 CAD a month, I felt my hair gradually got worst bit by bit the past year and I wanted a hair transplant soon. My doctor recommended that I should stop taking the spray and just take Finasteride (1.25mg daily, split 5mg into 4s) daily and Dutasteride once a week to see what happens. Due to panic and uncertainty I agreed.
In March is when the shedding started to get worse again but I didn’t know if it’s still due to the derma roll mistake from a couple months earlier. I decided to see HairClub and had a consultation appointment with the manager of the building location. I explained the situation leading up to that point and she said that I should continue using the spray and the only other option is hair transplant but she didn’t recommend it yet due to my hair still in a good state at the time and my age. To be fair I always had my hair in a way that made it near impossible to notice hair loss unless it’s unkept or wet, but she was nice and helpful.
Unfortunately as April started the hair loss worsened again, I was forced to recede my hairline back as I am no longer able to make my hair loss unnoticeable. I hoped it wouldn't get worse but it has, and not only is the crown thinning but between the crown and the hairline is becoming a problem, neither areas were problematic before. What makes the situation more difficult is that due to another situation that financially got in the way, I am no longer able to afford the hair transplant until much later than preferred.
I started to take Minoxidil again a week into April but in tablet form (5mg), still taking Finasteride (1.25 mg) daily, added New Nordic Hair Gro vitamin twice daily (contains biotin and more), Vitamin D daily, Dutasteride weekly, Derma weekly, and 2% ketoconazole shampoo (though I’m scared to shampoo my hair). I haven’t used hair thickening fibers for my hair for years until these past 2 weeks. It’s getting to the point where I should start wearing hats.
I overtyped but I felt like venting. What’s most frustrating is that I had a plan for multiple things in my life only for things to fall out of control. I had saved and reserved money anticipating a hair transplant with only the hairline to worry about, then potentially years/decade down the road another transplant if necessary, now it’s inevitable that there’s more to be done. I gave up waiting years for a dermatologist and I tried reaching Hair Club a week ago but was unable to reach them and they still haven’t called back. I'm wondering if HC only does first-time-only consultations and follow up appointments isn’t what they do.
It’s now objectively clear that the Minoxidil in the spray was 100% working (or at least slowed down hair loss), I should have never stopped. I messed up consecutively with back to back mistakes, nothing is working, my worst fear of this type of hair loss came true after years of avoiding it, and now feel completely helpless not knowing what’s next…

2024.05.14 02:17 Phobophile_89 James Blunt got ScURvY!!!

Well, James Blunt ate "Almost only meat and condiment."
YEAH... Condiments ARE NOT animals!
It's fairly important to remember that. Anti-nutrients, oxalates, phytotoxins, phytates, tanins. We avoid them on this diet, no point in keeping them in!
Vitamin C as an example, compete with sugar for absorption in the small intestine. Anthony Chaffee explained that Sugar and Vitamin C where practically exactly the same thing, except Vitamin C has a branch or two more, being more complex, it was loosing the fight for absorption. So when we don't have those anti-nutrient and sugars, we can absorb what's in the meat, even if it doesn't make up for the RDI.
I didn't find the video where Anthony Chaffee talks about the vitamin c specifficaly. But he just posted a video on defficiency on carnivore. Yes it inspired me for this post!

2024.05.14 02:05 Melodic_Painter2897 SIBO Cured? I’m Skeptical

SIBO Cured? I’m Skeptical
Hey Everyone (M - 32), First time posting on here! I want to thank this community that I've been lurking for the past year or so for all their intellect and honesty.
I'll give a brief rundown of my journey with what I believe to be SIBO so far. Since mid 2020 l've been dealing with a slew of GI symptoms that seem to align with SIBO. Change in BM, diarrhea, mild fecal incontinence, fatigue, increased urgency, gas, bloating, and intolerance to spice. After working with a Gl, and doing stool samples and a colonoscopy that yielded unremarkable findings except for a selective IGa deficiency when testing for celiac. Tested the rest of my immunoglobulin and they were normal. As is the case with most GI docs not much proactivity in getting to a root cause. He did although recommend low FODMAP but didn’t mention SIBO OR SIFO.
After my own research I tested with a hydrogen breath test in Dec 2023 that I unfortunately slightly skewed due to my own mistake. Essentially, after taking the laculouse drink I didn't wait 15 mins between drinking and collecting. The test from the lab came back inconclusive however my GI did suspect SIBO after his inference of the results and prescribed rifaximan. After finally getting insurance to cover it I was able to complete my 2 week coarse in Feb 2024. In tandem with the antibiotic i followed a fairly strict but not perfect low FODMAP diet, and did 2 weeks of probiotics following. I also have been taking psyllium husk, magnesium, omega 3, vitamin d and vitamin c since.
I’ve have a great amount of relief found on the diet however I’d really like to go back to eating normally. When I deviate from the diet the symptoms return.
Anyway, I have since retested to see if the Rifaximan had any result on it and it came back that I’ve tested negative for any of the 3 gasses via trio smart.
I’m curious to know if anyone else has cured SIBO on paper but is still suffering symptoms. Is there something else I should test for?
First image is the original skewed hydrogen test and the second is the trio smart 3 gas test that appears negative.
Thanks again everyone!!

2024.05.14 02:03 ASleepyB0i I get random bouts of extreme exhaustion throughout the day even though I get 8-9 hours of sleep.

I wish I wasn't so tired. It comes in bursts of sleepiness that pretty much makes every inch of my body feel heavy, and I just feel a need to lay down and sleep it away. It's a lot easier than forcing my eyelids open and feel my brain become fuzzy with exhaustion.
My family doesn't like it when I do this. Both of my parents think I should force myself to stay awake during the day, and they say I sleep too much despite saying I should go to bed earlier (I have gone to bed at earlier hours. I went to bed at 7, woke up at 8 in the morning and still managed to be tired throughout the day). I have tried so many ways to bring my energy levels up, and nothing works. Exercise just makes me even more tired, caffeine doesn't affect me, and I take medication that SUPPOSEDLY eases my depression and anxiety along with biotin and vitamin c+d supplements.
I think my depression has a hand in why I need naps to get through my day. Despite going to therapy and taking antidepressants daily, I still have these problems that my parents consistently beat over my head like I'm unaware of how much I sleep.
What other options do I have?? All of their suggestions have failed, and they still make me feel like it's my fault I'm this way. Everyone pushes my concerns aside. Nobody is taking my exhaustion seriously. They assume that it's just something I can brush off my shoulder when it's something that causes lasting physical discomfort when I don't rest. Thoughts?

2024.05.14 01:30 Frequent-Ad1243 Sex is irrelevant to romance.

This is a serious hot take, but hear me out. First we need to define terms: love is the idea of the desire for the good of another. Romance is the physical manifestation of love, in the form of respective surrender of mind, body, heart, and soul to the other. Romance is a hopefully lifelong endeavor between two people. There is no real end to romance. Sex, no matter how you cut it, always involves imposing your will on another to find a means to an end. The two possible ends are: pleasure or procreation or both. If you consciously seek eitheor, you are reducing your partner as a means to an end, which isn’t romantic because romantic acts should have no goal of reducing your partner or using them towards any specific goal. Even if you choose to have sex in such a way that is merely “open” to the consequences as opposed to seeking a specific result, the possible consequence of pregnancy despite use of measures such as birth control ensures that the act is always an imposition. I cannot personally find any way that sex fits in with what I consider real romantic acts: holding, hugging, cuddling, eye contact, nude cuddling, kissing, massaging, etc… all these other acts can happen for as long as you want them to, and can be expressed freely without consequence unlike the sexual act. Tl;dr I cannot see how sex fits into a romantic lifestyle, and I personally wish to avoid it unless my partner and I explicitly agree to open ourselves up to the possibility of creating a child together.

2024.05.14 01:16 jack_skellington Dear Bethesda, I'm perma-quitting Fallout 76, and I want you to know why. You can't win me back, but maybe you can help others.

So I logged out of F76 just now, and I will never log back in. It's over for me. The whole issue is 100% avoidable, though. I want to tell Bethesda why they lost me, and obviously this will give away some ways to keep other players.
First, the minor issues, which I'd solve with a mod in Fallout 4, but which are obnoxiously ever-present in the un-moddable F76:
But all of that was survivable. I've been building for a couple of weeks now, finishing quests (mostly not the Responders, but you know, other quests). Except... 3 days ago, I joined a game and the game couldn't place my camp. Someone else was in my spot. OK, no problem, you gave me a free "relocate your camp" so I will. But... all it brought over was my house and water pump. The gardens? Gone.
Not terrible, I'll rebuild. Over the last 3 days, I rebuilt a lot. My place is not good, I'm still low-level, but I had all the crafting, a vending machine, turrets for protection (which almost never seem to trigger on enemies, by the way), beds, and even got a settler who I met, who just hangs out at my settlement and plays guitar. Great.
And then today, the server locked up or went offline mid-game, and I booted back to the main screen. I had been in build mode at the time. I think that might factor in. When I got back in, it couldn't place my camp, gave me a free relocation, I took it, and when I put down the C.A.M.P. what did I get? It saved ONE ROOF TILE. Literally everything from the last 2 weeks was lost. To rebuild I'd need to get the resources again and re-place everything, new. I logged into a new game to see if it was a quirk, but it wasn't.
Bethesda, losing the items I had placed down today when it froze? Understandable. Losing everything, including the original building from days ago? Even the basic concrete flooring from 2 weeks ago? HOW? How could you lose THAT?
Bethesda, the game isn't good enough to persist with through this kind of mistake. I can forgive those smaller things like the cheery delusional "are we in a post-apoc game? tee hee it doesn't seem like it" theme, but if you're gonna do that AND then lose hours & hours & hours of my effort, WTF am I doing here? I'm not rebuilding, Bethesda. Sorry.
But maybe you can fix that for anyone else who is going to hit that same wall. Good luck.

Some potential studies suggest that Okra soaked water helps lubricate both men and women. The water helps in preventing vaginal dryness, which in turn increases the sexual potential. When there's enough lubrication at the time of sexual intimacy and less rigid friction, okra water is proven to give that relief.
It not only increases the lubrication during sex but also provides lubrication before sex to make you feel about sexual intimacy. Okra Water contains several vitamins like vitamins A, B, and E, which enhance the lubrication generation power inside the body. Okra water helps in getting rid of vaginal dryness and gives the natural wetness production to the body.
I copied this info from a website but it seems that okra water actually helps with hydration overall and sjogrens warriors need that. Dont forget coconut water.

Mindful Eating and Portion Control

Achieving a balanced lifestyle encompasses more than just the foods we consume. It also involves cultivating a mindful approach to our eating habits. One of the key strategies for mindful eating is to slow down and be present during mealtimes. Rather than rushing through our meals or multitasking while we eat, we should take the time to appreciate the flavors, textures, and aromas of our food. This heightened awareness not only enhances the enjoyment of our meals but also allows us to better recognize when we have reached a state of fullness, preventing us from consuming more than our bodies need.
Portion control is another essential aspect of mindful eating and healthy living. Overeating, even of nutritious whole foods, can lead to weight gain and other health concerns. By being mindful of our portion sizes and focusing on balanced plates that incorporate a variety of plant-based foods, lean proteins, and whole grains, we can ensure that our bodies receive the necessary nutrients without consuming excessive calories.
Implementing practical strategies, such as using smaller plates, eating slowly, and listening to internal hunger and fullness cues, can help us cultivate a more mindful approach to eating. This, in turn, can lead to sustainable weight management, improved digestion, and a greater sense of overall well-being.
By embracing mindful eating and portion control, we can unlock the full benefits of a healthy, balanced lifestyle. This holistic approach to food consumption not only nourishes our bodies but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the joy and satisfaction that can be found in every bite.

Managing Food Allergies and Intolerances

Navigating a healthy eating lifestyle can pose unique challenges for individuals with food allergies or intolerances. However, with the right strategies and a little creativity, it is possible to enjoy a balanced diet while effectively managing these dietary restrictions.

Identifying Allergens and Triggers

The first step in managing food allergies and intolerances is to identify the specific ingredients or foods that trigger adverse reactions. Common allergens include gluten, dairy, nuts, soy, and shellfish, while intolerances may be linked to lactose, fructose, or histamine. By being mindful of these triggers, individuals can make informed choices when selecting and preparing meals.

Adapting Recipes for Special Diets

Adapting recipes to accommodate food allergies or intolerances is essential for maintaining a balanced, plant-based diet. This may involve substituting whole food, organic ingredients for traditional allergens or using specialized alternatives, such as gluten-free flours or non-dairy milk. By experimenting with ingredient swaps and exploring clean eating techniques, individuals can discover a world of delicious and nutritious meal options that align with their dietary needs.
Through a thoughtful and proactive approach, individuals with food allergies or intolerances can navigate the complexities of healthy eating and enjoy a wide variety of whole foods while maintaining their overall well-being.

Clean Eating: Minimizing Processed Foods

In the pursuit of a healthy eating lifestyle, one crucial aspect to consider is the minimization of processed and packaged foods. The clean eating movement emphasizes the importance of consuming whole, minimally processed ingredients to maximize the nutritional value of our meals.

Recognizing Unhealthy Additives

When it comes to clean eating, it's essential to be aware of the common additives and preservatives found in many processed foods. These can include artificial colorings, flavors, and sweeteners, as well as preservatives like sodium nitrite and trans fats. By learning to identify these unhealthy additives, you can make more informed choices and avoid products that may compromise your balanced diet.

Organic and Local Food Options

Incorporating organic and locally sourced whole foods into your healthy eating routine can have numerous benefits. Organic produce and products are typically free from synthetic pesticides and hormones, and they often contain a higher concentration of nutrient-dense compounds. Additionally, supporting local farmers and producers not only reduces your carbon footprint but also provides access to fresh, seasonal offerings that are rich in plant-based goodness.
By prioritizing clean eating and minimizing the consumption of processed foods, you can unlock a world of whole, natural ingredients that nourish your body and support your overall weight management and wellness goals. Weight Management Through Healthy Eating

Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is an integral part of a balanced healthy eating lifestyle. By understanding the principles of calorie density and macronutrient balance, individuals can make informed choices to support their weight management goals.

Calorie Density and Satiety

The concept of calorie density refers to the number of calories per gram of a particular food. Whole, plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains tend to have a lower calorie density, meaning you can consume a larger volume of these foods without exceeding your daily calorie needs. This can lead to a greater sense of satiety, or feeling full and satisfied, which can support sustainable weight management.

Balancing Macronutrients

In addition to considering calorie density, it's important to focus on balancing the three macronutrients: protein, carbohydrates, and fats. Each macronutrient plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy eating habits and supporting weight management. By incorporating a mix of lean proteins, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats into your meals and snacks, you can help regulate your appetite, stabilize blood sugar levels, and fuel your body with the necessary nutrients for overall well-being.

2024.05.14 01:01 MerkadoBarkada COMING UP: This week; PH: OGP 1st week; PH: BSP rate decision; PH: UBP SRO start; INT'L: US April inflation; OceanaGold falls 6% in 1st day of trading; CREIT, MREIT, and FILRT declare Q1 divs (Tuesday, May 14)

Happy Tuesday, Barkada --

The PSE gained 92 points to 6604 ▲1.4%

Shout-out to Atot for saving the Inside the Boardroom special [MB link] for their "lunch read" (at least it's not a porcelain chair?), to Trina Cerdenia for retweeting the ITB episode with highlights, to Tenkan Sen for noting the bloodbath that has been the recent (and even not-so-recent) IPO market, to Just'n for recognizing that in most cases a secondary IPO is for exit liquidity, to Enrico P. Villanueva for mentioning the ITB article as a jumping-off point for further research and analysis, to Jonathan Burac for providing interesting background on auditors and former-auditors as Independent Directors, to kalel.RON for having their mind blown by my reveal that I'm not Matteo Guidicelli (deep cut for the OGs), to Tirador for the straight-forward review ("pangit an ipo yan"), and to arkitrader for the Monday vibes GIF.
Thanks also to the many readers who wrote in privately with praise, follow-up questions, and comments about yesterday's Inside the Boardroom special episode with OceanaGold PH's President, Joan Adaci-Cattiling. I won't list your names because you didn't choose to make your comments public, but I appreciate all of the notes that I've received and it's encouraging to see the interesting in the ITB series. Thank you!
Just for background, the Inside the Boardroom series takes a lot of extra work to organize, conduct the interview, and write the content for each episode. MB does not receive anything in return for an Inside the Boardroom interview; I only ask for direct access to the c-suite executive and the understanding that all questions that I ask will be direct (not trying to avoid unfavorable parts), to-the-point (not flowery), and without honorifics or deference (no titles or fawning).
I have a great amount of respect for companies and executives that agree to those terms, as there are many companies here that would never in a million years allow their executives to speak publicly, let alone on topics that are not 100% positive and dripping with marketing talking points.
OK, enough of that, let's get to the new stuff!

▌Main stories covered:

  • [COMING_UP] The week ahead... PH: While we had the OceanaGold PH [OGP 12.50 ▼6.2%; 100% avgVol] IPO yesterday, the biggest waves will be made on Thursday when the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) meets to evaluate our interest rate situation. The Union Bank [UBP 34.60 ▼6.0%; 83% avgVol] stock rights offer period will also start on Thursday. International: The only datapoint that I’m following for this week is the US April inflation report, which we should get early Thursday morning.
    • MB: The inflation metagame is where my mind’s at these days, and that’s all about inflation expectations. Not so much where inflation “is”, but where people (and companies) think inflation “will be” in the future. Inflation expectations matter because they can cause dramatic changes. For individuals, expectations of higher inflation can lead to changes in purchasing behavior and higher wage demands. For corporations, expectations of higher inflation can cause companies to increase their prices. I think you can see why the US Federal Reserve and the BSP are most afraid of these expectations; they’re something of a self-fulfilling prophecy. There should be a lot of analysis to consume on this point after the US CPI report is out on Thursday morning.
  • [UPDATE] OceanaGold falls 6% in first day of trading... OceanaGold PH [OGP 12.50 ▼6.2%; 100% avgVol] [link] dropped a little over 6% in its first day of trading, falling ₱0.82 from its ₱13.33/share IPO price to close at ₱12.50/share. The highest the stock traded was ₱13.34 in the first 20 minutes of trading before consistent selling pressure pushed OGP price to an intra-day low of ₱12.46 around 1:30 PM. The stock mounted a significant recovery to around ₱12.90/share before a massive amount of late-day selling pushed it back down to the ₱12.50 level at the close.
    • MB: Since this is the first IPO of the year, the questions in my inbox tell me that we need to quickly cover a few points before we move forward. First, yes, OGP does have a stabilization fund, but it’s important to remember that a stabilization fund isn’t supposed to entirely prevent a stock’s price from falling. A stab fund is best thought of as a discretionary pool of money that a paid agent (in this case, BDO Capital) can use to buy shares on the open market to provide some artificial demand for the stock. It has a limited amount of money (usually around 10% of the value of the total IPO) and a limited amount of time (30 days), and once either of those is gone, so is the fund. The other thing to remember about stab funds is that it’s entirely up to the agent to deploy the limited resources of the fund. They might be hands-off for days before suddenly smashing the market with a swarm of buy orders to soak up the selling pressure, or they might constantly drip artificial buy orders into the market. Or they might employ a chaotic mixture of those strategies. Stability funds are a little bit of short-term downside protection and a handy pool of exit liquidity, but they shouldn’t be seen as IPO Investing insurance or a protection against loss! Be careful out there!
  • [DIVS] CREIT, MREIT, and FILRT all declare Q1 dividends... Citicore Energy REIT [CREIT 2.83 ▲0.3%; 345% avgVol] [link] and MREIT [MREIT 12.96 ▲0.1%; 96% avgVol] [link] declared their Q1 dividends on Monday, while Filinvest REIT [FILRT 2.93 ▼2.0%; 47% avgVol] [link] declared its Q1 dividend on Friday. For CREIT, the dividend will be ₱0.049/share (stable), payable on July 9, representing 101% of CREIT’s Q1 distributable income (DI). For MREIT, the dividend will be ₱0.246 (stable), payable on June 14, representing 93% of MREIT’s DI. For FILRT, the dividend will be ₱0.062/share (falling), payable on June 7, representing 99.9% of FILRT’s DI for the quarter.
    • MB: The name of the REIT game is stability. While REITs cannot help what happens in the macroeconomic world with interest rates (all REITs got smacked when rates rose to fight inflation), what separates a good REIT from a bad one (in my opinion) is the management team’s ability to effectively worry about everything else to protect the income stream from loss. Bonus points should be awarded to teams who grow their dividend over time. Between these three companies, both CREIT and MREIT have shown the ability to deliver a stable dividend. CREIT has even managed to grow its dividend 11%. That leaves FILRT, which has continued to deliver giant turd after giant turd to its bagholders in the form of smaller and smaller dividends. FIRLT’s first three quarterly divs were at the ₱0.112/share level, and their most recent div was just ₱0.062. That’s a 44.6% drop. I don’t have a thesaurus within reach capable of accurately describing to you just how bad that is for a REIT. It’s not like the company suffered some major trauma that nearly halved the dividend; the div level has fallen four times over the past twelve quarters and in each of the last three.
  • [NEWS] FMEFT halted due to broken price tracker... FMETF [FMETF 105.20 ▲0.9%; 5% avgVol] [link], the PSE’s only exchange-traded fund, was halted by the PSE at 1 PM yesterday after it was discovered that its iNav had failed to update since 11:30 AM. FMETF said that it would “coordinate” with its “service provider” to implement a fix, but as of this writing, FMETF has not advised that a fix has been implemented nor has the PSE lifted the halt.
    • MB: This problem happened six times last year, and while it’s great that we made it into May before we had our first FMETF outage of this year, it’s still discouraging to see “iNav not calculating” as a problem that we need to contend with in 2024. For those who are unfamiliar, FMETF is an exchange-traded fund, so FMEFT’s per-share price is derivative of the per-share prices of all the shares that FMETF owns/represents. The “iNav” that keeps breaking is the number that represents the current value of FMETF’s holdings, expressed as a “NAV per unit” or “NAV per share”. So, if the iNav isn’t updating, then traders are not getting the kind of information they need to place FMETF stock trades. “We need more ETFs” is something that I’ve heard traders say for years now, and while I still count myself as part of that group, I wish we could see some forward progress in the maintenance of FMETF before we introduce anything more exotic to the market.

2024.05.14 00:58 Mediocre_Artist_5703 A vent and some questions about switching from Armour to Levothyroxine, and about communicating with doctors

I was doing well on 105mg Armour, sleeping well, waking well rested, depression gone, making progress in PTSD therapy. Blood work was normal when run either fasting or 5 hours after meds. My previous doctor that started me on Armour years ago said to follow that protocol for testing to avoid falsely elevated results.
6 months ago my primary care doctor (who continued the Armour prescription) had me get labs in the morning after a checkup. It was just a couple hours after I took the Armour, and after breakfast and vitamins (including biotin). They insisted it wouldn't matter for testing.
That test showed low TSH and slightly elevated T3, so he dropped my dose to 90mg. On 90 my sleep quality tanked, I developed a snore and sleep apnea, I started gaining weight, and worst of all, my depression returned. But my doctor said if I wanted to change my dose I'd have to see an endocrinologist.
By the time I finally got in to see the endocrinologist, I was a mess. My life was falling apart from not being able to keep up with things. I have ADHD and if my thyroid isn't optimized my ADHD meds don't help much. The apnea (non-existent on 105mg) had gotten so bad on 90mg that I had to start CPAP. CPAP has made it even harder to sleep - now I'm just laying there miserable exhausted and awake most of the night with uncomfortable things strapped to my face. Bills and responsibilities are piling up because I've been too tired and depressed to keep up.
I'm always nervous with new doctors because I've had some bad experiences with them not listening and making things worse, so I was extremely nervous with the endocrinologist because my thyroid has such a massive impact on my life.
My most recent blood tests on the 90mg dose were normal, except my T4 was at the very bottom of normal. But once the Endo saw the previous results from when I was on 105, they became preoccupied by that and by my stressed out heart rate (100) and visible anxiety, and interpreted them as hyperthyroidism. I don't think they even heard anything I tried to tell them about my symptoms, or history, about the dose having been changed, or about me being nervous with doctors. My resting heart rate at home is usually in the 70's to 80's, even with stimulant meds. I would think if it were actually hyperthyroidism, I would have an elevated heart rate and anxiety anywhere, not just at the doctor.
The Endo said I was thyrotoxic (even though at that point my TSH and T3 were normal and my T4 was borderline low) and they were worried about my heart. They said Armour dosing is unreliable, and switched me from 90mg Armour to 88mcg levothyroxine.
I've been on the 88mcg for 2 weeks, and now I feel worse than ever. I can barely get out of bed. I can barely sleep. My tongue feels like it's getting too big for my mouth. My depression has increased to the level of having thoughts of giving up on life (I wouldn't, I have a kid to take care of, but it gives me an indication of how much worse the depression is). My sitting heart rate has dropped to the low 50's. I'm so exhausted it even feels like it's an effort just to breathe. (Edit, and my migraines, which finally eased on 105 Armour, have now returned with a vengeance.)
At what point is this a concern that a doctor would take seriously? Or is this a normal experience for adjusting from Armour to Levo, and I just need to stick it out until the follow up blood tests in a few more weeks?
(Please don't tell me to see an integrative doc, I can't afford it.)

2024.05.14 00:45 alexandrea_O 17 weeks and suffering with carpal tunnel

I'm a FTM, 17 weeks along and suffering with pretty severe carpal tunnel. I had it prior to pregnancy, but I would have months between flare-ups, and they were very mild flare ups. Ever since getting pregnant, however, it just keeps getting worse. Everything I have read has said that typically, women develop it in the late 2nd to 3rd trimester, so I feel very alone having it this badly it right from the very start. I'm now sleeping with braces on my wrists and use a pregnancy pillow to prop myself up a specific way to try to help but my hands still go completely numb while sleeping to the point where they both start throbbing in pain and I can barely sleep. This continues throughout the day, too. I can hardly make a fist with either of my hands without them hurting, and I can't do simple tasks like opening jars or wiping down the counter tops.
I spoke to my doctor about it, and she referred me to get corticosteroid injections into my wrists. I'm going this Wednesday to get it done, but I'm so anxious about it. I was hoping to avoid it because I'm so scared of causing any harm to my baby. I keep telling myself that I need to take care of myself in order to take care of my baby when he or she is here, but I'm still so nervous about it.
Has anyone else here gone through with getting the injections? Wondering what the process was like and if it truly helped? I know everyone is different, but I'm just looking for some positivity around getting these injections to help ease my mind. Sorry for the long post, but thank you to anyone who is stuck around and to those who might be able to provide some feedback ❤️

2024.05.14 00:19 Objective-Morning-38 Day 4

I felt sick around 4 weeks before, suffered from a nasty flu for about two weeks on the third week i had recovered. My stepdad asked me to create a website for his company. interestingly, i did it a ease. I find it very interesting. now i am back to the usual routine.
DRDCEWMEC- i have found out new ways of recording the CBT techiniques on to my fitnes pal so that i am not only recording the diet and excercise but also making notes for the CBT.
As for today i woke up inthe morning aorund 11am. I realise the situation at my rented house. the outside environment is very difficult for me to sleep. I thinking moving outside of here and moving to a larger also quieter apartment would deemed to be neccessary for me in the near coming future. So from now on my routine has changed to sleep at 12am so that i am wake up around 8 to 9 am then i will start my day. today i woke up 11am then i had two coffee i took the usual supplements following the CBT strategies.
CBT; 1. meditation 2.diary 3. supplements including omega three, multivitamin and vitamin d3 4. sleep music 5. sleep tea 6. sleep perfume 7. cold room 8. lavender shower gel and shampoo (from 1 to 6 are active and 7 and 8 are passive). another classification is that the diary belong the the D and the other 7 are the CBT which belong to the C.
After i took the supplement i went to the gym. I realised i had no groceries left so i took the supplements with two cups of coffes and one mug of milk and i developed very bad diarroeah around 4-5 times. very good for losing the weight that is the good side.
later on the day i completed my food diary and then read sunzi, 33 strategies of the war and 36 military strategies of chinese warfare. One thing i learned most today is the ending strategy. Most ppl when they declared a war with others, they did not end with good terms and they will resume back to the original enenemies for no reason. Robert greene state that if you know/ analysis the situation, most often this is because of either of conflicting interest or the way of human behaviou human nature. very often there is nothing we can do about it. e.g. if this business or coroperation is against this someone's interest then obvious both you and him cannot come into terms. on the other hand let's say if he who can longer come into terms or taking advantage of you then he would hate you if you do not delater the ending strategy. From the famous quote the kindeness does not necessarily breed kindess in return in this world by Robert greene. The pp who do not understand this principal would struggle greatly.
Application: recently my roomate had trouble with me using the shared bathroom with him. he is claiming that he find it too difficult to share with me because he would like it to be more available with him . we had two shared bathroom one upstairs right next to me and one downstairs. I orignially agreed with him that it is ok for me to go downstairs if it is not too urgent but if it is then obviously i had to rushed to the one closer to me. Despit having repeated conversation i have devided to use the ending strategies.
There are a lot of ppl in this world who do not understand the society. they sort of live the world of their own in the example of my roommate he only considers for himself that if the bathroom near him is more available to him then it would be conveient and beneficial but he forgets to consider that what might seems convinient for him would also be conviniet for the others. this brings the key to advancing social skills, being a ppl person simplys means considerate more about others not only yourself. From the famous saying fit yourself into other ppl's boots. interestly, there are a lot of ppl in this world who does not understand this despite many years of repeptive failure experiences. in this situation because i had conversation over and over, i would not need to talk to him again. simply because if he does not get this principal then no matter how many times i expalinning to him it wouldn't make any difference. so what's the point really? so now it's the time to use the ending strategy. this is 1. the issue with the interest 2. the nature of the room who does not understand the common principles in life despite many times of repetitive explaining. the best practice now is to leave it there.
another learinig point of this strategy is the learn how to end the failure. in the past i had also experience failures and like many ppl i had learn to dealt with my failure 1. being hopelss and despair - thinking this is the end of the world and now there's nothing i can do 2. having negative thoughts and action about the society - blaming, accusing, being extremly defensive about yourself think everything happened is the fault of society 3. find nothing positive about the past failure experience and fallen into constant cycle of regreat.
what Robert said in his book as 1. Do not treat failure as failure but as a lesson to sucess so you need to know that both failures and success is in a constant cycles of repetition that is a common norm. what you need to do is to deeply analyse your failure and learn something useful out of it. this is also expalined in Rober kiosaki book do not just let life pushes you around instead learn something out of it which makes you stronger and smarter everyday 2. instead of being negative all times you should start learning some postitives out of it. this is greatly illustratd by the chinese philosophy so Ying and Yang. No matter how bad something gets as long as you are still alive there must be a corresponding positives. in other words if something is really happening terrible to your life then after you analysed it very carefully then there must also be at least one correponding huge positive. e.g. for my i graduated from pharmacy shcool becuase of my condition i cannot become pharmacist in the past i always thought of how other ppl in this society always descriminat me but on the other hands i have also learned the fundamental rules and algothrim of the society which is a key thing to master in order to thrive in this society. at the same time i als found my passion in tech, web desigh and cyber and going to pursue a carrere in this field. imagine if i never experienced these failures then how could i possibly learn and self develop and figure out my true passion. 3. feel extremely excited about failures since i just told you failures in life is inevitable and yuo know that failures taught us how to succed failures taught us how to thrive and strive better in life and in this society, failure has taught me how to fucntion better and accpeted better in this society, failure has taught me the importance of finding your target, do not be afraid, action and immeditate execution and the importance of long lasting perseverance. then now why are you afraid and why you are running away?
