Last night I finished the TLOK series. I didn't know anything about the shows weaknesses going into Book One. That first season made me feel so excited for the remainder of the story! It explored interesting themes in a beautiful setting, asked thoughtful questions, and introduced a compelling villain whose motive made a ton of sense and was a perfect antagonist to the Avatar. Amon was so compelling, I found myself actually rooting for him sometimes!
However, I was dissatisfied with how the writers chose to wrap up Book One. This could be an entire conversation unto itself, but to put it simply, I felt that Book One was building up to a moment that said "Hey, the bad guy is actually mostly right. Maybe the correct solution to this conflict is a third option that the two sides had not considered before." I was hoping the climactic battle / action sequence would be something like Batman vs Joker in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, wherein victory in the fist fight was actually a victory in buying time for the people of Gotham to prove their humanity. But instead of a battle over the soul of the city, Amon's 3-dimensional character was flattened into a 2D caricature through exposition: he doesn't really have a grounded philosophy worth exploring, he's just another water-bending baddie with daddy issues!
Similar build up and disappointment played out in each season. And after reading discussions on this subreddit, I can see how a lot of that was due to production issues with Nickelodeon. Not knowing if the show was going to be renewed each season didn't help. And, frankly, I think creating a follow-up to the gold standard of western animated television introduces challenges both internally (writers feeling they need to one-up the size and ambition of the story at the risk of making the show bloated) and externally (viewers always comparing TLOK to ATLA).
Remaking ATLA is nice but unnecessary. I feel bad saying this because, like a lot of you, I've seen how fun all the actors are off-screen and really feel they deserve better. Ultimately, there isn't much that needed to change about the animated series, so the odds of NATLA being worth watching was always going to be a longshot.
Remaking TLOK, on the other hand... I see a lot of potential for a remake to improve upon the original. Unlike for ATLA, condensing the story and characters would actually be a good thing! Fewer characters; only 2-3 side stories; a main villain arc that threads the entire series together; a live action Korra is really fun to imagine!

Didn't know too much about the kid other than where he ranks nationally. I naturally root for the Mirasolas since I went to PSU. Watching those matchups is where I became familiar with him to begin with. I thought he stood out amongst the high schoolers at OTT. Was already impressed and that's before I heard the kid talk. Just liked his style. Some guys are just brutes...total hammers but this guy...I get a kind of graceful feel watching the way he flows. Dang, is this kid impressive. He's already halfway done with college as a soon to be Senior in high school, I think. Very critical thinker and you can tell how it helps him on the mat. Really blown away by this guy. Hope PSU snatches him up in a year or 2. He's gonna be a killer on the collegiate level.

This isn't about being overwhelmed with the to-do list -- this sub already has some great tips on overcoming that. This is more about the work itself.
When I bought my house in 2016, I wasn't handy but I put a lot of time and effort into learning and doing some work to spruce this old house up like painting, landscaping, replacing fixtures, drywall repairs, minor electrical, building furniture (I made my own entertainment center and a desk for my work-from-home office) and tasks like that. I was largely happy with my results and I actually enjoyed doing the work and knocking items off the to-do list.
Now, it seems like I'm never happy with my results. I learn best by doing, I'll try doing anything once, and I always learn something from the project. As a result, most of the time I end up going back to re-do something because of the lessons learned, so everything takes longer to finish. And most of the time I'm still not happy with it.
The latest example is my back deck. It's fairly large. In 2022 I hired a contractor to re-do it. Well, he wasn't a great contractor. He mostly worked half-days and only showed up 2-3 days out of the week. When he started laying the decking he didn't even stagger the boards (in a high-traffic area nonetheless), so I had to explain to him he had to stagger the boards (which was crazy, and I had seen prior deck work he did, so he definitely should have known). The bottom of the stringers for the stairs were half on the concrete landing and half hanging off. He came and did some work while we were out of town. I don't want to get into specifics, but he put the young woman that was watching our house and dogs in an unsafe situation. As soon as I got back and she told me what happened, I told him his equipment is in front of the garage and he's done working at our house.
So I picked up where he left off on the deck project and did the best I could. It turned out ok, but there are some things that I'm not happy with like some of the railing posts aren't plumb and some of the joints on the railings were junky. So I went back and re-did them and made better miter cuts on the railing corners. But I'm still not happy, and even though I was happy with my miters, the wood has since shrunk and they're back to looking kind of junky. I still have to finish putting the spindles on the staircase and stain/seal the deck, so this project is definitely dragging on.
Things like this just kind of discourage me from doing more. I'm hesitant to start any other projects because once I swing the hammer there's no undo button and I know I have no choice but to follow through and finish. My can-do "I'll watch YouTube and try anything once" attitude has taken a hit because I haven't been happy with my own results. I don't think I'm a perfectionist but I know the phrase "my half-ass is someone else's full-ass" applies.
As an example of this discouragement, I hired a contractor to replace the old carpet in the house with LVP flooring in August 2021. Despite me letting him know the locking mechanism isn't like traditional LVP and the manufacturer has specific instructions, he didn't follow them so as a result I have some chipped planks and I can tell that the flooring in some rooms don't have adequate room to expand in the winter. The primary issue is that the treads and risers on the stairs have completely fallen apart. I've had the tools and materials to fix this since 2021 but I just don't want to start out of the fear it's not going to look good or last. After all, the work the contractors did weren't very good and I'm not happy with the results of my own work either.
I place trust in contractors so I don't hover or micromanage them but I haven't had the best luck with contractors and that's burned me, which makes me want to avoid them completely and do these improvements myself. I think I can do it via YouTube and "on-the-job", but I don't feel like I will do it well and I'll want to go back and fix issues.
I don't want validation, but I want to know anything that has helped anyone here to overcome a similar obstacle? I feel like I should be a lot further in my skills at this point after 8 years, minus a few years where I didn't have time to do much.

Every time someone tries to make a post here related to season 2 or the latter half of season 1 it gets dismissed because it’s “not canon.” Black Butler is a fictional story, there are no facts. So We texted the other day, and he told me, his friend (F), who he has known for a while, stopped talking to him and unfollowed him because she got mad at him for something stupid (his words). I've been grappling with a persistent issue for the past six days, spending many hours each day trying to resolve it, but to no avail. The problem involves the Logitech Gaming Software (LGS) settings getting disabled in response to various system events. I have G602 and G13.
I plan to install an older Windows version (1909) suspecting that this could be related to some lock-out features introduced by Microsoft, although I am not certain which version introduced these features.
Has anyone experienced something similar, or do you have insights into how display rendering and communication between drivers and services in Windows operate?

Here's a detailed breakdown of the issue:
Before installing an nvidia 2070, I was using an AMD APU where the problem rarely occurred, Triger - mostly just causing issues with the OCR integrated into PowerToys. Symptoms - included severe mouse lag, cursor stuttering, and sometimes a complete cursor freeze or a black screen. Fix- Restarting the graphic drivers using keyboard shortcuts would fix. Additionally, another issue with PotPlayer during fullscreen video playback; videos stuttered, but exiting fullscreen resolved the problem. Videos streamed from HBO/Netflix or YT did not encounter this issue.
After installing the 2070, the problem worsened and now additional triggers cause the bug.
Triger: - taking a screenshot causes a system hiccup after about 5 seconds; - launching Discord results in a bug about 10 seconds after the app runs smoothly.
Symptoms: If I move the cursor during this time, it temporarily freezes and makes several jumps before returning to normal function but now without LGS settings, appearing as if LGS is deactivated and the mouse reverts to the 'on-board memory' profile settings. LGS stops working altogether, including my G13 keyboard, which becomes inactive.
Fix To restore proper function, I no longer need to reset the graphic drivers. Now, in most cases, simply giving focus to LGS, like switching to it using Alt+Tab to the 'customize pointer settings' tab where you adjust the mouse speed and DPI, reactivates the correct profile. However, LGS must be open on this specific tab.
The error seems to be triggered by:

1. Severe stuttering, already present with the AMD APU, continues in applications taking control in fullscreen, such as the previously mentioned OCR tool and now also with partial screen captures using ShareX.
2. The error is also triggered by launching or shifting focus to various programs, such as starting Discord, activating a screensaver, or occasionally while watching YouTube in fullscreen or switching to Firefox. Some applications always trigger this bug, like Discord, while others like Firefox only sometimes do.

It seems like an error occurs that temporarily halts and restarts, possibly the drivers or a service, leading to a loss of communication with LGS. Although LGS is still running without internal issues, the pathway connecting the mouse with the cursor bypasses LGS until it is refocused, seemingly restoring the control path. The Windows event log does not show any errors or warnings related to this.
What has been tested:
these things have been enabled and disabled or changed to check if they affect the error:

1. Running as administrator
2. HDR
3. Display scaling in Nvidia panel
4. Refresh rate in Nvidia panel
5. In the video section: Telecine
6. Video content changed to use Nvidia settings
7. Refresh rate
8. Precise color mode
9. HDCP off, by modifying the registry and it is indeed disabled, as informed by the Nvidia panel
10. Scaling disabled, scaling mode set by games and programs turned off
11. G-sync
12. Nvidia overlay
13. Drivers for creators
14. In the system, disabling the display of protected content etc. DRM, despite the introduction of these three changes below, Windows still blocks protected content e.g., blocking screenshots in KeePass. Done: bcdedit /set nx AlwaysOff
15. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Kernel\ -DisableStackProtection
16. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System -EnableSecureContent
17. Uninstalling all drivers using DDU from Guru3D
18. Installing a new system and only installing drivers and LGS
19. Installing the oldest drivers for this card, version 456.71

Despite these adjustments, the issue, though less frequent, still persists.

Hello! I am moving my two-year-old son to a new daycare soon because my daughter will be starting kindergarten in the fall, and their current daycare is too far away. I'm on the fence about which one to choose.
Daycare 1 is a corporate daycare run by the same company that operates the daycare we currently attend. Their center is smaller and a mile from our house, and they provide lunch and snacks. When I toured, the director seemed lovely and supportive, and the facility was nice. However, it was a little chaotic in the classrooms, and it kind of seemed like the kids were merely being watched, not led.
Daycare 2 is an independently ran center that is slightly farther away. (Think an additional five minutes of driving each way, although it is out of the way). It is also smaller, but they have an incredible outdoor space with big trees to climb on, hills to run up, and mud kitchens to play in. They go outside four times a day. The teachers have been there since the center opened, and everything was controlled when I toured without being strict or anything. I could just tell that they provide the right amount of guidance and direction without stifling creativity. The quality of care was clearly better. However, in addition to being slightly farther away, we would have to make lunches every day.
Tuition is about the same, although Daycare 2 is slightly more expensive, and they have more breaks in care than Daycare 1. They have a week off in August, for example, and pretty much take every bank holiday off. That's doable but not ideal.
I'm leaning toward Daycare 2 because of the quality of care, but I'm worried that my husband and I will be overwhelmed with making lunches, and that the extra driving and breaks in care will be hard on us. It seems worth it for better quality of care, but maybe not? What do you all think?

My grandmother lives several states away and really enjoys watching baseball. Her tv provider no longer has a contract with MLB so just paying for a package isn't an option. She also has no internet service, and where she lives even basic service is quite expensive.
Quickest solution: Use an old phone and plug a PC stick directly into her TV. Stream baseball....unfortunately....
Problem 1: I will need to remote into the unit to set up the games for her.
Problem 2: MLB blacks out her team so I'll need to use a VPN to "place her" in Canada or Mexico.
I've got an old Chromebook that's converted to Windows that should allow me to remote in and run a VPN ok.
Is there a less cumbersome setup to avoid having a laptop laying open all the time?
Bonus question: is there a way to set up something that she can just touch once and it sends an automatic text to me if she has a problem?

What was your lowest point in life ? What did you do/doing to come out of it?
I will start first, I had a low income for a long time. However, in the last 2 years I started making people believe that I make a lot of money without telling explicitly to win over them.
Like I would say things like 'My company pays extremely well, but work life balance is not good etc' or when someone tells their salary and asks mine , I just say slightly more but same range without committing a number in general.
This worked in terms of people being nicer to me but I lost myself in the process, I don't know if I have a genuine personality anymore. So as a remedy I started communicating the actual numbers only when a discussion like that arises and honestly a good number of people don't care.
I realised my lowest point is not making less money but being pretentious and living a false life. And movies like vedam are just to be watched and enjoyed and not to be followed. I am happier now, I make what I make and honestly it is way better than being unemployed or doing physical labour.
The other one is trying to come off smart, I guess I have a long way to go on this one as that has been my personality since I had early academic success during schooling.

1. family members are still pessimistic because "it's a 2% chance starting down 0-3". Listen, that's because it's 2% to get through game 4 and 5 because you are probably defeated mentally. It's a 3-2 series this morning. NY was right here two years ago. They were going home game 6 and then came to Carolina game 7. Same exact thing we are going to do.
2. Freddy - yes, you all know I would bring him up. A couple good saves. Did he have to be great? no. he faced what 2 shots since the 10 min mark of the 2nd period? A testament to our matchups that NY dictated mind you. And, something we are very familiar with from the regular season. Freddy was decent. He hasn't won a game this series. He has, in my opinion lost 2. That said. No matter how much I offer a limb, Freddy will start game 6 and we will just continue to pray that NY can't shoot the puck. But we can't give the other team goals and expect to win.
3. Chatfield - has become the #2 priority to resign after Jake this off season. No longer need to say anything more
4. Burns - Lead the team in ice time without being on the #1 PP and besides maybe 1 or 2 plays yesterday, my goodness is he getting his lunch money taken. No way Rod breaks up the defensive pairing, but he is a liability now. When he is on the ice, I am holding my breath. He isn't scoring. So the lack of defensiveness in trade for offensive prowess is a loss transaction for us currently.
5. I posted in the GDT yesterday about Staal not scoring. Not being able to score really. And if he going to lose faceoffs then what's the actual point of his presence on the roster. And, I commented this right in between the 2nd and 3rd period, but the energy of the world wanted to prove me wrong and I am more than happy to sit here corrected. That goal - inspired the entire team. You felt the monkey just jump right off their back. Incredible performance yesterday. I just hope that wasn't the last of his energy if that makes sense. Emptied the tank so to speak. We have not seen Jordon Staal go on tears or streaks in a WHILE.
6. Power play - not sure why the team thought we should veer away from how we scored in game 4. Turbo trying to sling it across ice, Aho shooting right at Trouba from above the dot. Like, boys, put Brady at the point, move the defense, sling it to Brady, get the rebound or tip it in. 5 games now and we are still trying with the cute shit. That has to stop.
7. Cute shit - Turbo. My boy. Defensively? Great. No complaints. Offensively? buddy. what are we doing? I feel as if he hates shooting the puck. Like it hurts his morale. I have never seen a hockey player be so willing to not shoot the puck. Not like Jarvy to Aho that got deflected. That I think was a good idea and play and Jarvy just hit the defenders skate. Turbo will circle the entire rink before shooting.
8. Faceoffs - you have all heard me go nuts about faceoffs and how it has impacted our flow and game before. Yesterday was the first game I have seen where we "dominated" a game by losing faceoffs at that wide of margin. However, if you look, we started dominating faceoffs in the 3rd period, and wouldn't you know? We dominated the 3rd period.
9. The Rags looked gassed to me. They had a short handed goal and couldn't get momentum in the 2nd period late. That carried into the 3rd. Kinda what I referenced above with Staal. The tank was empty. But, think about it, Game 5, 1 day in between, game 4, 1 day in between. Game 3, 1 day in between. This has played to our advantage (the schedule). Game 6 will have 2 days in-between. Something to watch out for in the 2nd period next game. Who is controlling the game. And that will show me how much the schedule actually impacted this series and it's directly related to the Nicks in the NBA as well. If we win game 6? 1 day rest again and Game 7 is Saturday (our favor).
10. I think - I can speak for the entire fan base now, that if we lose in game 6 (doubtful) but also game 7? I think we walk away from this post-season a little bit more relieved than how we were all feeling just 5 days ago. We had 3 series' currently sitting 3-1 until we won yesterday and Vancouver might go 3-1 on Edmonton. And of all 4 series' if anyone is coming back down 3-1? It would have been us. Remember 2014, the last time a team came back down 0-3, LA Kings, won the cup that year. Collision course with Florida to repeat the ECF of last year, we would have home ice. That said - it's just a note. Win. One. More. Game. That's it.

Hello fellow people.
So I seem to have problems in learning especially complex big subjects like math, coding etc. Being stuck in a room class full of 30+ NT students, loud noises and unseemly boring lectures. I dissociated entire 12 year of school, finished with 8th grade level math and lacked some general knowledge. Luckily my autism lets me learn small facts all the time, but I don't get good chemicals from anything, I think because of my Anhedonia I don't have one deep interest. Just jumping between topics and getting bored quite easily.
Last time I learned something big was at age 10 when I learned English watching After Effects tutorials on YT. I learned video editing too (which is a crucial skill I'm decent at). But I quit doing VFX for two reasons: 1. These unknown learning obstacles got me to a point where I couldn't progress at VFX. 2. I am creative and love art, but I have analytical and critical mind, even doing VFX I changed every attributes like opacity and position in 0.5 increments even in 3D, and wanted my VFX to look in a certain look to be considered passing in my head. More good at copying and following some set of rules rather creating something different or new that was looked in my style and consistent.
I taken 2 private math tutors before and it wasn't ideal because they taught me concepts once or twice in a week and I didn't progressed alone. I feel like If there was something structured that suited autistic people with learning problems like me to just give us lectures and to teach us and push me to progress I could sweat it. But first I have to fix all of my learning problems. That's why I'm asking here, and I hope whoever sees this and been in my place could give me solid piece of advice so hopefully help me get over this :)
I don't want to give in to the idea that I'll never succeed just because I became un oblivious to idea of IQ after being tested slightly below Average. I know I accomplished something that don't reflect this stupid number and that if could solve these learning problems and being able to learn something big like that time at age 10 I could do anything! Just the thought of it makes me happy.
I'll to describe what's happening in my head (this is the part in my awareness) Now days when I'm sitting to learn something:

1. I become curious or interested about it.
2. I invest my entire time because I want to learn more about it.
3. Not knowing where to start and what to learn in order to progress in an organized and consistent manner.
4. I get stuck but not knowing why I'll start jumping for one subject to the other.
5. Between step 3 and 4 I'll lose motivation, focus and interest, I multi task, till I leave to entertainment or something else completely.
6. It's the fountain of excessive information and lack of guidance. Because I can't get myself unstuck or progress, the combination of low drive/dopamine, everything starts feeling more like a chore rather than I picked it

from free will, then I quit or move to something else never achieving it.

Level 87 player with over 350hours of gameplay - no, I'm not omniscient, I don't know everything, but I I've seen a lot and learned even more.
With the increase in patrols I think we can all agree things have gotten messier in game play, especially that you can get completely surrounded very easily now.
With that said I've seen an uptick in random gameplay where the host chides me or kicks me for not "participating" or not "keeping up with the rest of the team" because I'm somewhere else on the map.
So my default play style is "Big Brother" - at least some Youtubers call it that - it's the role where you're a little behind the pack watching all the angles, flanking as necessary and protecting the rest of the team. With my Autocannon and Punsher Plasma I have good medium range to take out Rocket Devastators and Gunships, etc. and kill Berserkers as they're chasing my teammates. Sometimes I help my teammates by covering for an escape - like keeping a Hulk or Tank busy while my teammates move on to the next objective.
The Big Brother role's strength is to keeping your teammates alive it has a weakness especially with all the new patrols: You can get cut-off from the team easily.
As I'm trying to support the team so they can move on and because distance-wise I'm not super close to the team, I get surrounded ever more now which means getting isolated is much more likely. When you're in this situation what are your options?

• #1 Try to run away without dying - not easy to do with heavy armor which I use to compensate because I'm carrying Autocannon/AC Backpack
• #2 Fight as minimally as possible with a small group that's blocking a clear path
• #3 (Worst choice) There's no clear path and so you get bogged down running around and then dying (which means you lose your stratagem weapon and being less effective on respawn especially if it's a long recharge time.

I've seen all three and #1 isn't always an option.
Jerk 1 who kicked me: After answering your SOS, I was saving your butt (and the other sub-level 10 lowbies) on Extreme for 30 minutes, distracting the tank so you guys could run to the next objective without dying, and also destroying the bot factories you completely ignored - not to mention they weren't anywhere close to the extraction which means we'd have to run all the way back to clear them .... and you waited for me to catch up to you to lecture me in your little-dictator-Napoleon-voice "You're level 87 and you've spent the whole time doing nothing. Don't board my ship ever again if you don't want to contribute." And then you kicked me.
Jerk 2 who kicked me: Another SOS. After running around the map trying to find samples (like everyone else) and then finding nothing I then ran to you at Extraction where we both loitered for a minute or two. Then you ran off to go find samples again. I stayed behind for a beat to look at the map then after that I GOT SURROUNDED BY EVERY LIVING BUG ON THE PLANET. I couldn't get an out ANYWHERE and just died. Again with the lecture on mic "Why aren't you doing anything. You're not helping us find samples. You're useless" ... then kick.
If you're going to host a game and call an SOS, yes you get to be a little dictator as much as you want - but know that you DO NOT know everything and you're not omniscient. At best you're an ineffective leader and you ARE contributing to the toxicity of the game, which is the OPPOSITE of the spirit of this whole enterprise - to work as a team.
My advice to you little wannabe fascists - learn some basic leadership skills maybe?

Hello ! I'm a french 32F solo travelling in korea , I've been in seoul for almost a week now and I've noticed a couple of things I wanted to ask if they are usual or I'm just being paranoid.
1- employees following you around at 7/11 or CU , I have a shellfish allergy so I'm careful about reading labels, I'm guessing I take too long reading/translating labels it seemed suspicious? At one 7/11 the clerk actually just stood there watching me , didn't ask if I needed help or anything, just pretended to ajust stuff on the shelves,
2- I heard about the foreigner's seat in Japan but didn't think it was a thing in south korea, multiple times on the subway , people would move if I sit down next to them , I had three seats all to my self on the busy Line 2 ...
Is this normal?

(I understand this is a bit of a read so I included a tl:dr at the bottom)
This may end up becoming a wall of text so I apologize in advance. I'm not sure how to properly start this so I'll just jump into it. I've been living with my best friends for the past 8 years. The 4 of us moved in together in early 2016 after deciding it would be beneficial financially and because we all get along so damn well that we knew there wouldn't be any issues living under the same roof. Fast forward to today and although 2 them have moved out, I'm still living here with my one buddy and his girlfriend. Things are still great there, no signs of friendship deterioration, tolerance or anything that might cause friction between us. However, I've been witness to a few things as well as started experiencing health issues that have completely changed the outlook I had on life back when we moved in together nearly a decade ago.
A little over 3 years ago I began dealing with awful IBS issues that to this day are still not properly being treated as doctors can't figure out what's wrong with my gut. Over the past 4 months I have begun dealing with nearly debilitating anxiety that has left me pretty much unable to leave the house except for doctor's appointments or the extremely occasional outing to a family or friend's house where I'm only able to stay for about an hour before having to leave. I do see a psychologist as well as a psychiatrist and I am on medication for both the IBS and anxiety, which helps but is in no way a cure. Due to these issues, I have become a shell of the person I used to be. No longer do I wake up and just decide to take a drive to the Jersey shore, a trip to Six Flags or head into the city to catch a Phillies game. Instead, I sit in the house and play video games or watch youtube as doing almost anything else is sure to set my anxiety or IBS off which may or may not land me in the ER.
My buddy that I still live with has been through absolute hell the past few years but luckily he's the kind of person who can just raw dog life (as in, he doesn't deal with any physical or mental issues, rarely gets sick and has no trouble going anywhere, doing anything, can eat whatever he wants without issues, etc.). He lost his mom to cancer last year. She passed exactly one week after Mother's Day. She lived here with us for about the final year of her life. Me and him have been friends for a good 20+ years at this point so his mom was like a mother to me as well, especially being as I don't have a proper relationship with my own mother. Watching her suffer through years of cancer only to pass away at 54 years old was heartbreaking. At least she's finally at peace now, of course. Now, his dad is also going through cancer treatment which is a recurrence of cancer that was found years ago, which automatically makes it stage 4. His prognosis is not grim but to many of us, his dad just seems done with it all. He stays here with us on weekends and with his sister during the week. We can see how much of a toll it's all taking on him. He won't admit it but we know that he doesn't want to put his son through all of this again after losing his mom just last year. If he was given a choice to "go" right now, he would take it, 100% to alleviate any more potential suffering at his or anyone else's behalf. His (my friend's) girlfriend also deals with chronic health issues both physical and mental which has helped open his eyes to the things that other people (who can't just raw dog life) go through on a daily basis. She lost her father when she was in her early 20s so it's helpful to him that she understands what losing a parent feels like.
Watching all of this happen just makes me realize how little our health care industry and government actually seem to care about our true wishes regarding life and death. Why did his mom have to suffer all those years with a terminal diagnosis? Why does his dad have to suffer now? Just because they're both in their 50s and not elderly it seems like care is always about treatment and not giving them the option to leave this life with their dignity intact. I myself would choose to leave this world if the door was opened for me. That does not mean that I am currently having thoughts of killing myself. It means that if the option was presented to me, to go out on my own terms, I would take it. Suicide is still extremely taboo in our society for some reason. Religion and government would have you think it is a crime against humanity but what is more humane than letting someone decide on their own terms that they're ready to move on? We are given this broad illusion of choice as children that we will get to grow up to be who we want to be and if we just try hard enough, we can accomplish anything. But for the vast majority of us, that is just not true. It is an illusion. We work and work and work just to barely earn enough money to survive and many end up in unhappy marriages solely because that's what society made them think they had to do as an adult.
Watching someone you love like family suffer and die will change you. Developing health issues that flip you from being someone outgoing, spontaneous. hard working and passionate into the complete opposite of those things will change you. Discovering that our healthcare system and government will do everything it possibly can to keep you as a "functioning member of society" no matter whether you're going through cancer treatment or dealing with chronic health issues will change you.
I'm 37 years old and I've never felt older in my life than I do right now. It's been almost 3 months that I've been on FMLA from work for the second time in 3 years. I'm wearing a heart monitor because my cardiologist wants to rule out any issues as my heart racing/palpitations are most likely just due to anxiety. Medication doesn't feel like it's doing much of anything and I'm watching the people around me grow older and deal with new problems every day. Yet our society says that we must keep going, no matter if you're suffering because the gears must keep turning. If we truly have the choice to do whatever we want to do in life, why aren't we allowed the choice to leave when we are ready? Why is it taboo? People kill themselves in horrific fashion every single day, more than once every *minute* worldwide. They want a way to fix that and the solution is right there in front of them. Give people the option to leave on their own terms. I've had plenty of conversations about this with friends and family and almost every single one of us would choose to leave on our own terms, when we are ready if the option were available. Hell, even my psychologist agrees with me on this. There's always a big debate about the ethics of it all but until you witness firsthand someone suffering and dying or begin dealing with your own health issues there really isn't any way to understand it. The vast majority of people are out there just raw dogging life and thoughts like these never cross their mind even once. But once it's brought up to them, they understand and accept it, at least in my own personal experiences from talking with friends and family. Ethics, health, religion, government, society, all of these things play a role in determining our fate. I just hope that someday a program is put in place so that people no longer have to suffer.
Finishing up, I understand that my condition is nowhere near as bad as what many others may be dealing with. Some people will look at me with disdain for wanting to walk through the door at only 37 years old while others will understand exactly where I'm coming from and feel the same. Everyone is entitled to their beliefs. I am appreciative of the healthcare system while also criticizing its flaws. I'm glad that religion provides so many with the means to live a happy and healthy life while also believing that many views (and laws) put forth by religious folk are vile and extremely outdated. I am glad that there are systems in place to help people in their darkest hours while also understanding completely why so many choose to leave. At 37 I still have plenty of my life left ahead of me, even if I don't want to get old. I still have things to look forward to such as video game releases or a new series to watch that keep me going. But I also acknowledge that there is a part of me that is ready to go. I have seen what life has to offer. I have lived with my family, on my own, while in a relationship and with my best friends. I do not want to get married or have kids. I do not want to work until I'm 65 (retirement age is likely to rise during my lifetime anyway). I do not want to get old and become a burden on anyone, either family/friends, healthcare workers or the average citizens who would have to pay for my social security.
Lose the illusion of choice and give people the option to go when they are ready.
If you managed to read through all of that, I just want to say thanks! Life is a beautiful thing and I am incredibly thankful for all of the amazing people I've met over the years and for the things that I've been able to do and see. This is not a post about wanting to commit suicide, it's main focus should be that we are forced into this world against our will and given the illusion of choice but when it comes down to it, we really don't have that much choice in how we live our lives and especially not when it comes to wanting it to end. Life can be incredibly fragile and many of us took that for granted until health issues decided it was time to show their ugly faces. I truly do not believe that feeling like you are ready to go should be considered taboo in any way. It should be something that everyone is provided a safe and comfortable space to discuss, whether with loved ones or medical professionals. For all of you out there just raw dogging life, I see you and I hope that someday I can get back to that, I really do miss being able to do whatever I wanted without a second thought. And of course, for anyone who knows what it feels like to be ready to go, to feel confident and comfortable with that decision, I see you as well and hope that the rest of society someday sees that as normal.
tl:dr I am 37 years old and over the past half decade I've watched family and people who were like family to me suffer and die from cancer or other health-related issues. I also deal with debilitating anxiety and IBS issues which obviously are nowhere near the level of something like cancer. However, I've discovered I have a feeling of "being ready to go" and I believe that people should be able to choose to leave this life with dignity and on their own terms without having to do something horrific. The healthcare industry, religious beliefs or government should not force us to remain here against our own free will just so we can keeps the gears of society turning. Let people leave on their own terms when they know that they are ready and get rid of the stigma surrounding talking about death.
