Hi. I just got back a series of blood ests and my dr is not concerned. I am tired all the time and feel depleted. I am also cold all the time - the optimal indoor temp for me is 78 degrees which means i am not freezing. I am considering a more IM route, but don't even know where to start in an affordable way. 2024.05.14 16:37 Triumph0629 How do the almost half a million singles and families making below the poverty line house themselves here?

The poverty line is 18k per year.
Rent is around 24k per year in Northern Virginia. And minimum of 12k per year for one with a roomie.
I calculated there are at least 112,009 single person, single adult tax-defined households making less than 18k. Add in families making less than 18k and this number rises to at least 459,272 adults below the poverty line who aren't sharing income in NoVA.
HUD housing only gave out 300 new HCV vouchers for apartments in Loudoun, in a decade, for example. Similar stories in surrounding countries. The LIHTC program offers the cheapest subsidized apartments outside of HUD, but only a few dozen apts per county.
HUD housing SSI/SSDI, etc are very stingy and don't even reach a fraction of these people. I don't know how many families are using TANF. But that wouldn't even apply to singles. So how are almost half a million singles and families housing themselves if they make below 18k?

2024.05.14 15:28 sonjaswaywardhome Question about treadmill calorie burn vs heights

in general the more someone weighs the more they burn for the same activity, right
i’m small (5’0) so everything says i burn very little compared to my peers for the same activity; makes sense…
but on the treadmill im doing the same settings as the girl next to me; she’s tall and for her it’s slower than a leisurely pace and im practically running!!! and im still burning significantly less for the same activity??
how can this be if im working so much harder
i know these calculators aren’t perfect or exact but wondering if i’m actually burning more than it says if i’m pouring sweat than the girl barely walking bc my legs are shorter
or no i really am burning like a fraction of hers

2024.05.14 14:34 _conwy_ [Precalculus] Determining sign diagrams of polynomial functions and their derivatives

Is there a generally agreed procedure – or at least a handful of useful techniques?
Background:
I'm learning about concavity in curves of functions, specifically identifying the turning points and inflections in such curves.
To do this I'm building sign diagrams of f(x), f'(x) (first derivative) and f''(x) (second derivative).
For example:
x -1 0 1/2 1
y' - - + +
  • By working out the signs of the 1st derivative, I can determine the turning points of the curve.
  • By working out the signs of the 2nd derivative, I can determine the inflection points of the curve.
The functions tend to be polynomial, e.g.:
  • f(x) = x^2 - x^4
    • so that f'(x) = 2x - 4x^3
    • and f''(x) = 2 - 12x^2
  • f(x) = x^4 - 3x^2 + 6x
    • so that f'(x) = 4x^3 - 6x + 6
    • and f''(x) = 12x^2 - 6
So far my "technique" is pretty scrappy.
First I determine zero points (by inspection, completing the square or applying the quadratic formula).
Then I just punch tiny permutations into my calculator, e.g. `1.0001^2 - 1.0001^4`, etc, randomly to see whether they're negative or positive, and scrawl down the results. Then I try to throw together a sign diagram that seems right.
I would prefer to follow a consistent method that can generally get me accurate results.
So far I've got this short list:
A) Inspecting for obvious forcing of the whole result.
E.g. in an expression like: 2x^2 - x^2, the result can only be positive, because both sides square x and the left side only doubles that value, so will always be larger than the right.
B) Factoring/grouping.
Factor the polynomial into groups of multiplications if possible, then solve the sign of each group separately, then combined them in the end.
For example:
  1. x^4 - x^3 - 5x => (x^2 - 3x)(x^2 + 2x)
  2. Make two sign diagrams, one for (x^2 - 3x) and one for (x^2 + 2x)
  3. Then combine the signs, i.e. - * - = +, - * + = +, + * + = +
C) Tabulating permutations.
Drawing up a table of values of x (columns) and groups of the polynomial (from the Factoring/grouping above).
For example:
x -1 -1 + 0.001 0 - 0.001 0 0 + 0.001 1 - 0.001 1
(x^2 - 3x) 2 (+) ≈ 3.995 (+) ≈ 0.003 (+) 0 ≈ -0.002 (-) ≈ -1.998 (-) -2 (-)
(x^2 + 2x) ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
This can then easily be converted to a sign diagram.
D) Applying values of powers of fractions.
I noticed it's common that a fraction raised to a power will give a radically (no pun) different result to the whole polynomial.
For example:
6x^3 - 6x will be:
  • Negative for fractions; e.g. (6 * (0.5^3)) - (6*0.5) = -2.25
  • Positive for whole numbers; e.g. (6 * (2^3)) - (6*2) = +36
So it might be useful to quickly identify where powers are applied to fractions and solve for them early.
I'm thinking of memorising (or at least being able to quickly build from memory) a table like the following:
x 2 3 4 ...
1/2 1/4 1/8 ... ...
1/4 ... ... ... ...
1/6 ... ... ... ...
... ... ... ... ...
E) Inverting the polynomial (or grouped parts of it) to find zero points.
For example, given: 5x^2 - 1.
I can invert 5x^2 to get sqrt(x/5) so that sqrt(1/5) gives me a zero point of the expression.
Then I can add/subtract tiny amounts to build the sign diagram around it.
E.g.
x sqrt(1/5)-0.001 sqrt(1/5) sqrt(1/5)+0.001
- 0 +
What do you think?
Am I generally right to try and find a systematic method or at least a collection of tools to solve this kind of problem?
If so, are there any good books out there that cover such methods, so I don't have to discover them on my own by trial-and-error?
Or if not, then maybe this would be a good topic for a math book or blog post that I should write on my own!

2024.05.14 00:32 Rand-Seagull96734 CPUC Fixed Charge Decision: Does it Negatively Impact all SDG&E Solar Households

TL;DR CPUC Fixed Charge Decision negatively impacts SDG&E's DR-SES Tariff Plan customers. This is because DR-SES customers were the only customers avoiding paying for certain programs that all customers were supposed to pay for.
There has been breathless media reporting and corresponding repetition on Reddit, that CPUC's fixed charge decision impacts all SDG&E Solar customers. Is this really true?
Solar customers typically use one of four SDG&E rate plans: DR-SES, TOU or TOU-2, or TOU-5. A household can choose DR-SES upon getting Solar and EV plans requires a BEV or PHEV. DR-SES has flat Distribution and Delivery charges which are nonetheless lower than for customers who do not have Solar. This incentivizes Solar adoption (lower Delivery/Transmission charges and zero for self-generation) which is good. EV-TOU plans, in return for minimum or monthly fees, reduce Transmission/Delivery charges in general and dramatically reduce Super Off-Peak (12 AM - 6 PM, and weekends/holidays) rates. This incentivizes load shifting EVs and major appliances (dishwasher, washer, dryer, heat pump water heater, ...) to night, another good thing.
So far so good. Beyond Transmissions/Delivery, as you can see by clicking on the tariff plans above, there are charges like PPP (Public Purpose Programs), ND (Nuclear Decommissioning), CTC (Competition Transition Charge), Local Generation Charge (LGC), and RS (Reliability Services). These charges were intended to be recovered from all SDG&E customers, but were charged on kWh (volumetric) basis. In order to not have Solar customers avoid key volumetric charges though, the concept of Non-Bypassable Charges (NBCs) was introduced in NEM 2.0. Under this scheme, NBCs were calculated as all energy imported from the grid at a granularity of every hour. This essentially meant all households including on EV-TOU-2/5 plans could not avoid NBCs. This is because any net negative time of use for the month avoided transmission/delivery, but not NBCs if the corresponding energy was imported at night. Since the majority of Solar and EV households tend to charge at night (people are at work during the day), they started paying NBC based charges.
But one anomaly remained. SolaEV/Battery households on the DR-SES plans who had large enough solar with batteries, and charged their EVs during the day, could have net negative use during every hour of Off-Peak and On-Peak, with Super Off-Peak being low anyway. This essentially circumvented the concept of NBCs and the goal of all households paying for Public Purpose Programs, etc. So far, some DR-SES households were the only households avoiding NBCs. The fixed charge decision fixes this anomaly.
I have not seen public data on it, but intuitively DR-SES must be a small fraction of SolaEV households. The "fixed charge" is an increase for them. Or more correctly, they now have to pay for a mandatory charge they were previously avoiding.

In the world of Forex trading, pips and pipettes are the fundamental units of measurement for currency price movements. Understanding what pips and pipettes are, how they work, and their significance can help traders make informed decisions and navigate the markets with confidence.
What are Pips?
A pip (percentage in point) represents the smallest price change in a currency pair, equivalent to 0.0001 (1/100th of 1%). For most currency pairs, a pip is the fourth decimal place (0.0001), while for Japanese yen pairs, it's the second decimal place (0.01).
What are Pipettes?
A pipette is a fractional pip, equal to 0.00001 (1/1000th of 1%). Pipettes are used to measure smaller price movements and provide more precise pricing.

I would like to ask for some help, my fellow redditors. Am I right in calculating that if I want to buy €600 worth of VWCE ETF on Xetra (IBIS2) exchange per month, tiered pricing is better for me? All calculators say so, but I see that they do not take into account what happens if you buy fractional shares. As I have seen they charge 1%, but the ETF price will not always be divisible by 600, so I would pretty much always buy fractional shares. Where am I doing the wrong maths?

2024.05.13 04:39 turn2stormcrow Some AP Physics C Tips!

With the Physics C exams coming up in 2 days, I thought I'd share some tips. Feel free to give me some tips in return :)
Calculator Stuff:
  1. Store all the important constants on your calculator (G = 6.67E10-11, μ = 4πE-7, ε = 8.85E-12, electron mass = 9.11E-31, proton mass = 1.67E-27, k = 9E9, e = 1.6E-19). This is very important because it minimizes the chance of miscalculation and saves you a bit of time. Basically just type the value, then press the STO button, then press the alpha key and a button with the green letter you want.
  2. Don't forget to switch your calculator to degree mode before the exam. The test is a day after AP calc, so a lot of people will probably be in radians. In some cases you'll need radians (sometimes it's important for SHM and electrostatics) though, so keep that in mind too.
  3. When typing in exponents into your calculator, use the EE button (click on 2nd then the comma, then type the amount of times you want to multiply by 10). It's way easier than using the 10x button and manually typing out the exponent and minimizes the chance of mistakes.
  4. If you have a really big or small number that isn't automatically converted into scientific notation, instead of counting the digits, change the calculator mode to "SCI" and enter the answer again to get it in scientific notation. Don't forget to change back to normal when you're done.
General Strategies:
  1. Pay attention to what the FRQ is asking you to do. If it asks you to "determine" something and especially if it asks you to justify your numerical answer, usually you'll get full credit for writing just the answer down, and it's possible the answer is 0. If it asks you to find, calculate, or derive something, show all of your steps. And obviously don't put a negative number down if it asks for the magnitude.
  2. Pay attention to units for E&M (mechanics almost always has correct units given). If you write down the correct units for each numerical answer for an FRQ, sometimes you'll get a point just for that.
  3. Write the "correct" version of a formula when showing work. For example, don't say that flux = EA or flux = BL, instead say that it equals the integral of E dA or B ds. Similarly, don't use force equivalences (or any other equivalences for that matter) without explicitly saying F = ma (i.e. don't say ma = -kx without writing F = ma).
  4. Don't forget the negative signs (or do forget them if it asks for magnitude) for stuff like torque (for all clockwise torques), dU/dx, spring force, and potential difference. Sometimes the negative direction is up too for forces too depending on the context.
  5. If an MCQ has a wall of text or a complex pictorial representation, just skip it. Time is unbelievably scarce on this exam, so use it wisely.
  6. If you encounter a linearization (line of best fit) question (they appear on basically every recent exam year so you should definitely be prepared for it), write an equation in the form y = (m)x + b, and use this to analyze what would happen if one or more variables were changed (those questions pop up a lot with linearization problems). Make sure to use points on the line of best fit and not points given on the graph to calculate the slope, because if the points are far enough from the line
Annoying Equations to Derive that aren't on the equation sheet (you should know how to work backwards from most of these):

2024.05.12 22:55 Post-Hoc-Ergo Understanding the "Poison Pill." What do Rights Holders Actually Get?

Understanding the
The Rights Agreement is, IMNSHO, confusing AF, which is why its taken me a week to get this put together.
I read through it a couple of times, thought I understood it, started writing out an explanation and discovered new fine print that only served to confuse me further.
I think I finally have a handle on it, (with quite a bit of help from u/Kendalf, who pointed out a section I had missed on my first and second read throughs).
I have some theories percolating as to what may actually happen, but I am going to reserve speculation for future posts. I am going to try to limit this post to a factual dissection of the agreement.
But the answer to my question of, what exactly, shareholders will get is:
There is no way of actually knowing!
There appear to be three options.
Before getting into this let me reiterate that this agreement is incredibly confusing and I am by no means certain that my understanding is accurate. That’s the primary purpose of this post, getting some more eyeballs on this and engaging in some “crowdsourcing.” Hopefully others will point out things I may have missed or misunderstand.
So, with no further ado, here is my current understanding, which is drawn from the Rights Agreement filed with the SEC:
https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgadata/1499961/000182912624003060/mullenautomotive_ex4-1.htm
and the Certificate of Designation of the Rights:
https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgadata/1499961/000182912624003060/mullenautomotive_ex3-1.htm
Each shareholder of record on 5/13 will be receiving one “right” for each share of common they own.
This right gets you absolutely nothing unless a “Flip-In Event” occurs: somebody acquiring 10% of the company. Should that happen the rights become exercisable 10 days later on the Distribution Date.
It should be noted that even if someone does acquire 10% of the shares out, the Board reserves the right to redeem the rights for next to nothing in the 10 days between that acquisition and the Distribution Date.
Rights Agreement p. 25
So if you are a rights holder, what do you get on the Distribution Date?
Well it seems impossible to say definitively, but there appear to be at least three options.

Option 1 – You get a fractional share of Series A-1 Preferred Stock.

According to Section 7 of the rights agreement a shareholder will exercise their right by paying the company $30.00 and will get 1/10,000th of a share of this newly created Series A-1 Junior Participating Preferred Stock.
Rights Agreement p. 10
Each share of the Series A-1 gives the holder 10,000 votes, so each right exercised gets you one additional vote. While the A-1 preferred is subordinate to all other series of preferred it does have a higher liquidation preference to the common.
Certificate of Designation p. 4
So upon exercising the Right (which can only happen 10 days after someone acquires 10% ownership) a rights holder can, for all intents and purposes, double their position by paying $30.00
If you exercise your right, you now have your original share of Mullen and 1/10,000th of a share of Series A-1 for a total of two votes.
This doesn’t strike me as a particularly good deal for rights holders. You pay $30.00 for one additional vote and a 10,000th of share of Preferred that, in the event of liquidation, only entitles you to $1.00 (1/10,000th of $10,000).
Certificate of Designation p. 3

Option 2 – You actually double your common position for free.

(h/t to Kendall for pointing this out to me) Section 24 of the Rights Agreement provides that at any time after a “Flip-In Event” the company may exchange your right for one share of common.
Rights Agreement p. 25
If this happens you have just doubled your position at no additional cost. That seems great. Except that, all things being equal, a doubling of the shares outstanding should lead to the stock price getting halved. So its basically a wash.

Option 3 – You get a ton more shares of common stock by exercising your right and paying $30.00.

This most closely resembles a true “poison pill” as it will dramatically increase the float and make a hostile takeover prohibitively expensive.
But be aware that dramatically increasing the float should have a disastrous impact on the SP.
According to Section 11(a)(ii) of the Rights Agreement, following a “Flip-In Event” a Right holder shall have the right to receive, in lieu of 1/10,000th of a share of A-1 preferred, a number of shares of common. To determine how many shares you would get you divide $30.00 by 50% of the Current Market Price of the common.
Rights Agreement p. 13
Current Market Price is defined as the average closing price over the preceding 30 trading days.
Rights Agreement p. 15
Currently the average closing price over the past 30 days is $4.30. So if the rights were exercisable tomorrow, in exchange for $30.00 you would get 13.95 additional shares ($30.00/$2.15).
Prior to a "Flip-In Event," should the 30 day average price go up you would get fewer shares and should it go lower you would get even more.
While this would definitely serve its purpose of deterring a hostile takeover it would absolutely decimate the SP. Try to calculate Book Value Per Share based on 95M shares out rather than 7M.
Well that's a wrap for now.
It appears that the Board has the discretion to give you any of the above options, or even nothing at all by redeeming the rights.
That's my understanding anyway.
Would really appreciate any feedback and a spirited discussion.

2024.05.12 22:54 AH_Josh For Those Afraid of C955 - DONT BE

Hello Owls,
I just pulled double duty today and knocked this one out. 3 credits in a day. I just wanted to give a boost of motivation for anyone struggling with this course or hasn't started it because like we all know, math is scary.
But, in the most respectful way, this class is a joke! In a good way. I would say it's about on par with 5th or 6th grade math. Some of the concepts are hard to grasp, like the Simpson paradox. But one quick google search later and I knew it enough to answer any questions about it on the test.
Here is what I used to study: Nothing. I didn't study anything. I did my PA at 2:16PM, then drove to the library and took my OA at 3pm.
For those still stuck on this class, I highly recommend Khan academy. They helped me a ton with my math required for my Associate degree, and their presenters use fool proof ways of describing concepts. The other tip is BUY AND USE YOUR WHITEBOARD. I will say, math IS a strong suit for me. But even then I found myself utilizing the whiteboard to draw up scenarios. 10 balls in a bowl with colors? Let me draw them up and label them and just count on my hands instead of trying to visualize it in my head. This made everything so much easier. And the last thing, if you can swing it, a really nice calculator. I have a TI-84+ CE and there is a mode where I can add fractions straight into the command line and add them whole numbers, decimals, and other fractions. That made the test a breeze.
Good luck, you can do it!
P.S. sorry for double post mod I just want to motivate folks :)

2024.05.12 21:22 Fa1nted_for_real How do terms cancel out in fractions?

Terms canceling out in fractions has always been a point of confusion for me. Mainly when you start mixing addition with multiplication, and especially when yous start involving variables and exponents.
For example, how would you simplify
6x+3 _______ x2 +3
I honestly don't even know where to start with canceling out when addition gets involved, unless it is literal equations where I don't seem to struggle.
I also would like to ask for some problems that can be simplified for me to solve.

2024.05.12 21:05 pherytic Contradiction in the free energy of the ferromagnet?

At one point in my thermo textbook, we did an exercise where we calculated the free energy F(T,M) of a magnetic spin system. We found that for isotherms T_1 < T_c, and zero external H field, there were stationary points at M = 0 and M = +/-M_s (the spontaneous magnetization). We found that F(T_1, 0) > F(T_1, M_s), to show that the magnet will fall into one of the ferromagnetic configurations. The result looked like this: https://slideplayer.com/10136391/33/images/slide_1.jpg
Later, when deriving the Griffiths inequality in the context of critical exponents, the argument was made that because ∂F/∂M = H (with T = T_1 held), then for H = 0, F is flat between -M_s < M < +M_s and so F(T_1, 0) = F(T_1, M_s). See this excerpt from Pathria: https://i.imgur.com/mYK1jUg.png
How are these two results consistent?
