I just got diagnosed with PCOS and was prescribed Metformin (500mg extended release) and was warned by my doctor that it can cause a really upset stomach and an “urgent” need to use the bathroom for a few weeks when you first start it.
For those who take Metformin, was this the case for you?
I’m leaving for a two week trip to Costa Rica starting on Saturday and don’t want to deal with that if it’s a likely side effect, but if it’s less of a given and more of a possibility, I would be willing to risk it just because I’m TTC and would like to get started as soon as possible.
Also if anyone has any general Metformin tips I would appreciate that as well. This is all so new to me since I only got my diagnosis now after 28 years of struggling with all the symptoms, so I’m not really sure what to expect. So any insight would be super appreciated!

I wrote this list in my journal of how I was feeling (daily) for the past few years before I stopped drinking.

Now that I've stopped all but two of the above have gone away 100%. Kind of chilling but when that small voice enters my mind that tells me I 'miss alcohol', I can't help but think, "Don't you know it was going to be the end either way?". This morning I hugged my babies, had coffee on the porch, and went for a run. I'm safe today.

I have had a constant pain on the right side of my body for about a year. I am almost a daily drinker and need to stop. It goes anywhere from my lower right stomach up top my shoulders, it can be on the front or back. Its a dull pain, almost like I need to stretch my muscles. Anyone experienced this? I have had an Ultrasound (showed early fatty liver) CT Scan, colonoscopy, blood work (elevated liver enzymes) all came back relatively normal and have no other symptoms of anything serious, like Jaunice or weight loss that come with liver disease.
Anyone else experience this, and did it go away when you stopped drinking?

My symptoms have been worsening, & I’ve been in the hospital since last night. I got a spinal tap done, (ICP nearing the 60’s!!) something I haven’t done since being diagnosed in 2021. I have a horrible positional headache. I can’t get up to go to the bathroom, and I can’t even sit up to eat it hurts so much. Sunday night I was in so much pain I was vomiting.
I spoke with a neurologist who is now recommending I get a shunt placed.
I’ve been on a health journey since around November of last year. And I’ve lost a total of 70lbs so far, and have surgery planned in a couple months for WLS. I want this to go away on its own. I fear so much for brain surgery.

Hi all.. apologies if this is in the wrong page. I have recently had a battery off blood tests due to a number of symptoms. I have fatigue; tiredness back pain.upper and lower.actual general body pain which I put down to growing older!! particularly upper bilateral arm pain which I would have put down to muscle aches.. but they have lasted weeks Since january I have been getting random rashes that start with a burning itching sensation and then spread to ..neck face arms etc..sometimes raised and bumpy sometimes not.. usually happens when exposed to cold air. they do go away and antihistamines help. I do have an odd moving intermittent sharp pain on my left clavicle or behind it..I cannot pinpoint where it comes from. it reminds me off referred pain I had in my right shoulder when I had a benign liver cyst removed last October. I do lose circulation in my arms and legs frequently and have to move them to get them going again! ie so my hands and feet can go numb..and when I shake it out I get pins needles etc and then all is OK.. I have had this a long time but last few months very frequently sometimes a crawly feeling in lower legs and hands and sometimes face..head.. not unbearable more odd and happens intermittently no night sweats.. or permanent rash. my bloods are out of normal ranges in the following areas hair loss esp last 2 years no thyroid issues do have sleep apnea ( on cpap) hbp high cholesterol esr at 38 ( lab values should be under 15) c reactive protein 10 ( should be less then 5 low folate alk phosphatase is 135 and has been rising in each blood test.
mchv was just below baseline in my last bloods.. but fluctuates

my gp was concerned about the immunoglobulin despite numbers being within levels and he ordered Serum Protein Electrophoresis test
That all seemed to be within the parameters however there was a comment on the report, included below.

Hello! I'm a 35/F in Canada, with a history of mild asthma. Non-smoker In early March I got strep throat - doc never did a swab but my tonsils were swollen & patchy white/black. She gave me amoxicillin and that helped. 2 weeks later I could feel something brewing in my chest, I tried to fight it on my own but ended up stopping by a pharmacy where he gave me salbutamol + 5 days of prednisone. That kind of helped, so I ended up at the hospital because of thr weight on my chest. Chest xrays came back clear, that doc gave me amoxicillin again and the round purple inhaler, advair. Went back to the hospital a week later. Doc took blood work, everything was normal (rbc was slightly elevated but was never mentioned) I was still coughing up phlegm, I couldn't sleep on my right side or I could feel the weight of my chest and start coughing again. Mid-April things finally started getting slightly better, but then they seemed to go back to square one a week later. I've been to the hospital + a clinic x2 now, got an EKG done it was normal....got more prednisone and was told to double up on the advair. Takes the edge off but it's not helping overall. A repeat xray last week showed nothing
Now in May I'm still coughing - seems dry during the day and wet at night, I can only sleep on my stomach or sitting up but wake up constantly coughing. If I lie on my side I get a bad wet cough that makes me feel like I'm choking. Sometimes I cough so hard I puke, or I can't seem to hold my bladder or I get pain behind my left eye..like a Charlie horse but in my eye. My chest hurts, my throat is sore from all the coughing. Same with my stomach muscles. When I take a breath in, I can feel pain on my right side/right lung?. If I turn my neck, lean forward, hiccup etc I start coughing again.
At night I take 2 puffs of salbutamol, 2 puffs of advair, an allergra, nasal spray and 2 tablespoons of benelyn and a tea with honey to help a scratchy throat
I go back to see the clinic dr today, I'm miserable.

You can see some of my earlier posts with my gallbladderless journey, but I wanted to give an update since so many who improve move on from these threads and leave these forums with a skewed view of recovery. It took me a good 6 months to start improving. I continued losing weight after surgery and the nausea prompted an MRCP to see if there were any lingering issues. I kept being told everything looked perfect and to give it time. I had a lot of anxiety and panic around food and getting sick. I’m still Covid conscious so I don’t do public outings often, but the one time I tried to eat out early into recovery I cried and had to go home. The mental impact of having a persistent or chronic illness was probably harder than the illness itself, but I forced myself into a routine. The only constants I had were my planned meals and my daily walks, both of which were life saving. I’ve eaten the same breakfast since early in recovery, Kodiak protein waffles and sliced apples. Lunch is usually whatever my 5 year old consumes; peanut butter sandwich or dino nuggets, white cheddar popcorn or baked lays. Snack used to be exclusively an apple cinnamon rice cake with dark chocolate hummus and cut up strawberries, but in the last 2 months or so I eat a Chobani flip (Boston cream is the best one, don’t fight me on this). Dinner 80% of the time is baked chicken breast, a vegetable (usually baby carrots), and, my lord and savior, Costco rice made in my zojirushi rice maker. This was an investment after my sibling made me rice in theirs days after surgery. I didn’t even think I liked rice for 3 decades until I had well prepared rice. I love it so much now sometimes I’ll eat it as a snack or my whole meal. After dinner I have walked every evening since surgery to aid digestion. It really brings the burps and toots out. A month or 2 after surgery my once a day poo turned into diarrhea so I started one heaping teaspoonful of sugar free psyllium husk after breakfast to firm up my poo (the timing is better for bile dumping symptoms for people without gallbladders). I believe this consistency is what helped me improve after my body stopped being in survival mode. I lost 40 pounds in just a few months before and immediately following surgery so it’s clear I needed time to adjust. I let go of the expectation of when I was supposed to feel better and trusted my body. Once a day walks turned into twice a day when I had the energy. My stamina is nowhere close to being at baseline as I’ve lost a lot of muscle tone, but I’m slowly working up to exercising more (walking IS exercise contrary to what some of these gym bros claim). I eat smaller, more frequent meals as opposed to heavy, dense ones. I experience low heart rate and low blood pressure episodes when I am stressed, eat too much sugar, or sometimes it’s random, so I watch my sugar intake (NEVER on an empty stomach), salt load when symptoms come on, and lay down if I can until it improves. I have struggled a lot with freezing at night, but that’s improved in the last month, probably because I’ve managed to gain a few pounds. I’m more liberal with my diet now, but I did so slowly and I don’t push myself. I still get anxiety about ordering out because I have a severe fear of throwing up from eating food prepared by somebody else + the risk of norovirus. I’ve recently been able to tolerate small amounts of heavier dairy like alfredo and ice cream. I eat a couple bites of red meat when served, but it’s infrequent (twice since surgery). Despite what I’m still dealing with I’m very glad I had surgery. I know I would’ve died if something didn’t change. Plus, my lab work is the best it’s been in my adult life. My triglycerides alone dropped by 55% in a year from eating clean. So if you’re reading this wondering if you’ve made a mistake, give it time. Advocate for yourself, but also give your body time to adjust. Some people take years to improve and I think my timeline will be about that to confidently say I’m completely better. As he wandered around the third floor, he heard the sounds of claws, walking, and laughter. My father immediately took out a knife and walked around with caution. Still, he reached the roof and saw his former friend sitting on the roof. He approached him and touched his back. The former friend did not react. He looked at his former friend's face. His face was torn, there was blood everywhere. I turned back and saw an unknown creature. It was long and had no hair. She was pale, had long arms and sharp claws on her hands. The mouth was big. There were large sharp teeth in the mouth. It looked at my father and smiled. The father looked at this creature and read a prayer. It gradually approached and when it approached point-blank to the father. He realized and stabbed the monster in the stomach. He pushed with his foot and it fell and they screamed in pain. The father took this monster by the scruff of the neck and threw him off the roof. It fell on the reinforcement which pierced through the bodies. The father quickly came down and ran home. Hey fellow non burpers.
Exactly a month ago it was finally my turn for the botox treatment, it was not easy to get an appointment so im very glad i even got the chance.
The first week after getting botox i had a lot of microburps and very little negative side effects. I had some slow swallowing and food came back up sometimes but it was very manageable. Unfortunately i had a very stressful family situation around week 2, which resulted in my throat just closing up completely. I only microburp when i yawn now and its only succesvol 20% of the time. No big burps at all so far. Sometimes it even feels like air enters my throat when i yawn instead of it getting out.
I know that i can always just get botox again, but due to circumstances and the waitlist i wont be able to get it done (if a second round is necessary) for a whole year. And now that i know what its like to have even the tiniest bit of relief from the microburps its like my symptoms feel a 100 times worse. I am so full of air that usually within 2 hours of being awake, im already uncomfortable and in pain. I dont even drink soda or anything, i think the slow swallow just allows a lot of extra air to enter my stomach.
Am i being too impatient? Or is it very realistic to assume that its just not going to happen for me this round? Should i start doing shaker excersizes?

I'm reaching out for some advice regarding my mom's health issues after her recent visit to Indonesia. She's 68 years old and during her four-month stay, she experienced two significant family events, both funerals, which understandably took a toll on her mentally. Adding to the pressure, she's the sole family member who resides in Europe, carrying the weight of providing for her family.
Her upbringing was challenging, and the recent events have seemingly pushed her to her limits. However, her symptoms seem odd for a typical burnout scenario. Additionally, she was bitten by a dog in Indonesia, leading to anxiety and necessitating rabies vaccinations, which she completed upon her return to Europe. The good news is that her doctors have ruled out rabies.
Symptoms:

• After the first funeral ceremonie, she got really really sick. Lot's of (green) mucus, cough, very very tired, anxiety. this lasted for 7 days.
• After the second funeral, again she got very ill. These funerals were spaced apart. Again, lots of mucus, coughs, green mucus, exhaustion.
• Throughout the months, sometimes diarrhea, sometimes complete constipation.
• Panic attacks & Anxiety she never in her life had these before. She became extremely scared of simple tasks, like making small decisions, she couldn't fly back alone from Indonesia, so I had to come get her.
• Rapid weight loss, despite normal eating habits. She's lost 15kg (33lbs) since the second ceremony and continues to lose weight rapidly. She's now worryingly thin, skin and bones. She also has reduced sensitivity in her skin.

Ever since her return back home, she has insomnia and "pressure" in her head. She overthinks about absolutely everything. She'll sleep for 2-3 hours per night, the docter has put her on sleeping pills and antidepressant. She takes Oxazepam during the day, (2) Mirtazapine tablets for anti depressants and (2) Zolpidem to sleep. However the medications are not helping, she still does not sleep for more than 3 hours per night and during the day she's very "off it" because of these pills.
Despite numerous blood tests showing normal results, except for pre-existing high blood pressure and cholesterol (she takes pills for this), her symptoms persist. Tomorrow, she's scheduled for lung and stomach scans, and today, she underwent more bloodwork. However, her condition seems to worsen with no clear diagnosis in sight.
Considering the vast difference in hygiene and environment between Indonesia and Europe, could it be a parasitic infection? We're at a loss, and her doctor is equally puzzled.
Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and support.

I started stim on 5/2/24, which was the second day of my cycle/period. Here are some stats: * AMH 1.48 and AFC 32 (12 on the left and 20 on the right) at baseline bloodwork and ulttasound in February. * I had alcohol until 2 days before my cycle started. I didn't drink once my period started. * I stopped lifting weights once I started stim. I didn't do much cardio either.
This was my protocol (Day 1 means "day 1 of stim", which is the second day of my cycle):
Day 1-Day 4 * Gonal F 225iu * Menupur 75iu
Symptoms: Slightly more emotional. Belly felt like I might be pregnant and I felt the need to be extra careful when getting out of bed etc. Overall felt my usual self.
Sex: Non penetrative. Orgasm caused no discomfort. At certain times, sucking in my tummy felt a bit like I might be pushing down on something inside me.
Tests: bloodwork and ultrasound on Day 1
Day 5-Day 9 * Gonal F 225iu * Menupur 75iu * Centrotide .25mg
Symtoms: Not much.
Tests: bloodwork and ultrasound on Day 5 and Day 8. I think they said the follicular count was 6 on the left and 16 on the right.
Sex: Non penetrative maybe around Day 5 or 6. Orgasm caused no discomfort.
Day 10 * Gonal F 225iu * Menupur 75iu * Centrotide .25mg Trigger shots at 9:45pm * HCG (Novarel) 5000 is * Lupron (Leuprolide Acetate) 80 units (4mg)
Tests: bloodwork and ultrasound on Day 10. Follicular count (that were large enough) had increased to 8 on the left and 18 on the right. Most of them were around 16mm to 17mm. I think there was one that was like 19mm. This is from memory so the numbers might not be exact.
Day 11
• 11am Azithromycin 1g (two 500 mg tablets)
I was asked to take this on Day 10 at night, but I misread the instructions and took it in the AM on Day 11. I was told this is fine.
Hydration: I drank a lot of water throughout the day in preparation for surgery the next day. I didn't eat or drink anything after 11pm that night.
Symtoms: Woke up on Day 11 with pelvic discomfort and cramps which I figured was from the trigger shots the night before. I was waddling a bit when walking. Driving over small bumps caused discomfort. After taking the Azithromicin at 11am, I felt a bit feverish. I had to lay down. I fell asleep for a couple of hours. I woke up around 3pm feeling perfectly fine. The pelvic cramps were gone as well. The rest of the day was smooth sailing, except for this feeling like my stomach was stretched beyond normal. It almost felt like I was constantly holding in my stomach because of the way it was stretching my tummy.
Tests: bloodwork on Day 11
Day 12
Retrieval in the morning. The IV stung throughout the procedure until they put me under. This was probably the most uncomfortable part of the entire procefure. I was out of the clinic in almost exactly 2 hours. It almost felt like I just went in for a blood draw and walked out. It doesn't feel like anyone did anything down there.
Before leaving the hospital they told me they were able to retrieve 30 eggs. Later in the day they left a message in the online portal saying they were able to freeze 27.
I spent the day on the couch drinking gatorade. Took a nap. Overall I'm felt great, other than for a very slight headache which started around 6pm. I had a Tylenol extra strengh which helped. It kind of felt like I drank a bit the night before and I was hungover. I'm prescribed Letrozole two times for 7 days a day and Cabergoline at night for 16 days.
Costs\ My insurance didn't cover anything related to fertility. Out of pocket cost was around $13300 ($8100 for procedure, $650 anesthesia, $35 initial tele visit, $4500 medication). I might have spent an additional $150-$300 in bloodwork.
I did have an additional $760 added to my cost because I visited a different hospital initially (Penn medicine in Philly) - they were not upfront about all the costs and ended up charging me $380 for the initial visit with the doctor (which was a bit like a sales pitch) and another $380 for the baseline ultrasound even though they told me it would be covered by my insurance. It was also really hard to get a call back from their billing team (they rarely return your calls).
Scheduling\ Main Line fertility in Philly worked with my cycle. Since I already had the baseline ultrasound and bloodwork done, they were able to get me started on stims with my upcoming cycle.
They required me to call them on Day 1 of my period to schedule to come in and get bloodwork on Day 2. I started stim on Day 2 of my period. I had my retrieval on Day 13 of my period.
End to end, starting from my first consult with them, I had my eggs retrieved in 21 days.
The hospital I was working with previously (Penn Medicine), had me going around in circles for months. It was extremely stressful. I'll write a separate post about red flags to look out for when choosing a clinic/hospital.

I am looking for a side job (no surveys, or tasks that take a buttload of time for little money). I say this because I am a new mom, have 2 other kids, a full-time job and am pursuing my MBA (My work pays for this, but I am about to take a break due to the issues below). I have a well paying job (I am a Scrum Master) but with the cost of living every paycheck I get is almost gone as soon as I get it all to bills. I am trying to find something online that can bring in an extra $2,000 a month.
I have about $25,000 in debt which is a huge chunk of money every month but I feel like I just can't get ahead even with the monthly payments. On top of that I bought a house last year so my mortgage is crazy expensive too.
I have a partner but his work is so sporatic that I can't rely on it. And he can't work more because he is the primary caregiver to our new baby so I can work. We don't qualify for government assistance because on paper it looks like I make a lot (but my take home is not that much).
I am looking for a reddit that can help address the issues above. I need help, advice and guidance. I am always so stressed out about money that it causes anxiety with physical symptoms (constant neck pain, headaches and hip pain) and depression. I just want to enjoy my family but all I can think about is what are we going to cut out this month to try and get ahead.
Its exhausting. I am exhausted.

My cute dog (American Cocker Spaniel) will pass soon. He already had a bad start when he was still with his mom (inexperienced breeder). He spend the first few weeks in the hospital. Some of his brothers and sisters didn’t make it, but he did. When we had our first check up the vet told us that his lungs are not in a very good shape. The rest of his body was fine with the exception of his teeth which were close together and had some plague already.
During the years we encountered some problems. After weeks of searching what is happening we found he has an severe longterm allergy for beef. We eliminated everything which contains beef, they are everywhere even in Salmon Biscuits… after the elimination it went ok and we even got a second dog.
Everything was going well. He had some problems with teeth (bad shape, due to bad start and medicine there) and his temper like food protection or barking at cars / bikes, but it was fine and he got a good checkup every year including titer tests which were always ok. His health started to decline in the summer of 2023. He started limping on his front feed and was eating worse. We also noticed 2-3 weird spots on his skin which seems like hotspots. The vet told he was a bit heavy, he had a stiff neck and his intestines were a bit puzzled. A few sessions of acupuncture, good washing and balanced diet could help him, and it did help him for a few weeks.
In the winter his health suddenly declined and the weird spots on his skin increased and expanded over his entire body with crusts. He was losing a lot of hair. After a few vet visits, some medicine and some tests we discovered that he was highly allergy for almost everything you could imagine. This was a big message for me and my wife as it would mean we should change in the house a lot while we also have a other dog who lived the same life in perfect health. We switched to special hypoallergenic dog food of Hills so he does not react on that food and keep the other dog on his current food. We had to lock both pets apart and clean up where the other pet and also where we ate so he can’t get any other food in his stomach.
This worked for a few weeks. He remained happy when someone is home, we went to the forest or beach regularly and if I leave the house I always wants to be back as soon as possible to see my family again. I mainly work from home, so the two pets are always around and I have a deep emotional connection with them.
Unfortunately, the spots came back rapidly and he was shaking a lot. His teeth’s were also declining rapidly and his movement worsened that he could jump on the couch anymore and the stairs are done step for each step. We shifted from dexamethasone to Prednisone to see any difference, but recently we came to the conclusion that this and other treatments are not giving the results we and the vet wants. I was still looking for possible solutions, but my wife (had dogs in the past) and vet intervened that he is sick and everything we are doing could at the best only suppress symptoms, we were not making him better. EDIT: The vet said we were doing everything right on food, health etc. But basically his immune system is failing and not doing what it is supposed to do.
This week we decided to put him down. He will get his final rest next Saturday, on his fifth birthday. I’m devastated and keep crying that it is going to happen. Never had a pet during my youth and I’m just worried about the gap of the unconditional love he will leave. I’m also worried about my second dog who never has been alone and plays a lot with him and what this change will do with him.
While I’m writing this, my dog is sitting next to me and shaking. I find it very difficult he is passing at such a young age and weird thoughts are going through my mind if i could have prevented this, do things differently or anything to expand his time here with us. No matter what, I love him and keep carrying the awesome memories and the times he dragged me and my wife through really hard times in my heart. I saw this community and all the kind messages and advices, i thought i would give it a go also with my story and I’m open for advices on how to deal with the pain and some possible ideas to keep him close with me even if he is not there anymore.

The back of my neck is unstable and shakes when I lean forward I also have a lot of throat and right collarbone pain, nerve pains shooting up the back of neck and head, chronic headaches, vertigo making it hard to do basically anything
I’ve been to a muscoskeletal practitioner he gave me some stretches and just said it was tight but they haven’t helped and just make it worse
It’s been bad for about 4 days but have dealt with similar symptoms for about 5 months
Is this something I need to get checked out again immediately or wait a few months for an MRI on the NHS

Hi all, I’m still at the point of trying to get doctors to take me seriously.
I’m a 36 year old female - previously very healthy.
I’ve been ill for a year and a half and none of the other specialists can find anything wrong with me. I had made another post with my symptoms, but I’ve developed more since then. The shortened version is nausea daily for 18 months, stabbing pains in the entire trunk of my body, lightheadedness, difficulty swallowing, difficulty speaking, confusion, and rapid heart rate/heart flopping around in my chest plus elevated blood pressure. I also have had leg weakness and had a fall because of it which landed me in the hospital for 3 days.
The new symptoms are: severe vertigo, numbness/tingling in both arms and legs, migraines that last for days - focused at the back of my head & neck, numbness in my mouth and tongue, hyperreflexia (diagnosed in the hospital but I forgot to include it in the last post).
Since I’m only 5mm herniated I haven’t been taken seriously. I do have a cine MRI scheduled in 2 days that I all but begged for, so hopefully that’ll help with the diagnosis.
What do you guys think about the MRI images I have of my brain and neck? These were the ones from the hospital with just contrast (and they were checking for MS, not Chiari, if that makes any difference).

Hi everyone,
I'm really sorry if this is the wrong place to ask my question but I don't know who or where else to ask.
This is a general question only and is in no way a request for medical advice.
Recently I learned that an old acquaintance had passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at a relatively young age from cancer; I don't have all the details and will likely never know the full story, but what I was told is that they went to the doctor and were referred to have various tests and scans and found out they had cancer and were told they had 4 weeks to live, and tragically passed away within 3.
It has been a long time since I've seen them but from all accounts by others who move in similar circles, they were still fit, active and seemed good literally 4 weeks ago.
My question is, how does this happen? Obviously without the full story I know this is impossible to answer for this particular situation, and given they went to the doctor there must have been some sort of symptoms, but how is it possible to be so close to death and not even realise it? If they hadn't gone to the doctor, they would have just died seemingly out of nowhere. Am I right to assume that they may have been hiding/masking pain and discomfort, or is it really possible that they didn't feel anything up until the short weeks prior to their passing?
I am just so gobsmacked and only ask this because I want to better understand without prying and asking for specific information about this person.
