2021.04.23 03:30 c_cygnus Help Me Find A Game

When I was younger, I would always play this mobile game on my parent’s iPad (roughly 2010-2013). It was a matching game like Bejewled Blitz, but it was a landscape game, with art very reminiscent of Edward Gordy. You matched different colored tiles to earn points that you spent to create undead monstrosities that shuffle towards your enemies workshops while they send their own undead at you. I remember I think one of the creature’s name was Ladyfingers, and the most expensive creature was some homunculus thing that was a ball of flesh with arms flailing about. The story was something along the lines of you burning down your boarding school, killing the headmaster, and you and your friends are trying to escape to the main character’s dad in London. Your old classmates chase you down to try and kill you. I’ve been looking for this game for the longest time and I have such a clear image in my head, but for the life of me I cannot find it.

2021.02.24 06:22 acheandeny [PC] [Early 2000s] Game where you would match these puffy balls with eyes to clear them

I was talking about nostalgia with some friends earlier tonight and I remembered this PC game I would play when i was around 6 or 7. It was a puzzle-like game, something of a similar gameplay mechanic to Bejewled Blitz, or Candy Crush. Except, the things were puffballs, and they had eyes. I remember that if you combined too many of them, they would make a huge puffball that was hard to get around. I can't remember the name of it for the life of me. It's probably stupid and simple, but it isn't something I can put my finger on 11 to 12 years later.

2019.03.20 09:03 rebahaze [TOMT][PC GAME][2000s] PC game we would play in elementary school, bright colourful blobs that was similar to bejewled blitz/Tetris? We called it "Skittlez"

Talking with my boyfriend tonight about games we had at school and I mentioned this game and I can't find it anywhere online.
We played it on Mac computers, every level had some intense EDM/techno music. It was colourful blobs that had eyes and emotions and you'd have to connect them similar to bejewled blitz, more than three, but they'd fall like Tetris from above and you'd use arrows to where you'd want them to land?
Was it called something different or only exclusive to my area???

2017.11.28 22:35 romeozor Are you good at Bejewled?

I recently picked up Bejewled Blitz again and I still suck at it.
I’m wondering if it’s because of my colorblindness, or I just don’t have what it takes to be good at it.

2016.05.26 20:09 Bill_Board Just found out my wife is pregnant!

So I drove my wife for a OBGYN appointment yesterday for some tests. I'm in the waiting room just crushing Bejewled Blitz and she comes out and says she is ready. We walk to the car just kind of chit-chatting about nonsense and when we get to the car I put it in drive and say "So, how did it go?" (she was going for nothing pregnancy related). She turns to me and says "I didn't get it". To which I then give her a blank look because she was in there for 30 minutes. She looks at me and says "I'm pregnant".
HOLY FEELINGS!!!! this is fucking awesome!

2014.08.05 07:04 sinnyc [WTB] Inexpensive Aurora LTI package

I'm looking for an inexpensive Aurora LX package with LTI. Inexpensive as in: it doesn't cost as much as an Avenger, 300i, or Hornet package. Why so specific?
  1. This past weekend, my wife expressed a mild interest in Star Citizen. Wow.... Up until this point, the extent of her interest in gaming has consisted of Bejewled on her phone and playing FishFarts with our kids on our tablet.
  2. She's watched me play (well, not really watched; rather, she's endured my involvement in) Everquest, Anarchy Online, Asheron's Call, Eve, WoW, LOTRO, AoC, Warhammer Online, and Rift and has never done anything more than roll her eyes/ignore me/wish I'd stop. So with this unique opportunity, I want to get her a ship that will give her the ability to experience some of the variety that SC will offer: some cargo hauling; some exploring; a bit of combat.
  3. The standard equipment jump engine and LTI ensure she will always be able to fly around the PU, no matter what happens to her ship.
I'm PayPal verified and have made several purchases here, including a Banu MM over a month ago when I actually had an unexpected surplus of that unobtanium stuff called "money".
So, if anyone is willing to part with a cheap LX package with LTI, please let me know. I'd be very thankful. If not, thanks for taking the time to read my plea and hopefully I'll see you in the 'verse with my certain-to-be-terrible wingman :)

Questions Answers
There's a huge amount of hate for EA on Reddit. How do you feel about that? Makes me sad sometimes, but also EA has made their share of mistakes over the years and has earned some of the frustration.
I think in the last couple of years EA has been improving, even if not quite perfect, and the internal conversations about being a consumer first organization are huge - but it is a slow ship to turn.
Honestly when it comes to the micro transaction model, I don't think EA knows what they're doing, and that makes me sad. Few have nailed it and gotten it right. Including PopCap!
Halfbrick who made the Jetpack Joyride app game are really good about it too. I think it's the furthest and most fun I've gotten in an app game without having to pay. Did you pay?
Will PopCap ever take DogeCoins as a method of payment for games now that the currency is traded widely and already has large markets and companies for accepting direct payments? DogeCoins rock and we're always figuring out if we should give our customers various ways of paying!
If I get the Bundle, am I missing anything by jumping into the Bejeweled series with number 3 and skipping the epic story in the previous two games? I want to pretend there is this amazing backstory similar to Mass Effect that you'll miss. But no.
What was your biggest failure and what did you learn? How does it influence you today? At some point in the early days I left PopCap. I was the CEO at the time, we were doing well, but I left to go "make movies" and spent about a year and a half doing short films. Ultimately we hired a CEO and he encouraged me to come back, and it was the best decision of my life.
For me the failure was not realizing that it had nothing to do with the movies or wanting to direct movies, it was that I was in over my head. I had a lot of natural leadership skills, but I didn't have the experience or emotional maturity. While I will never direct a movie, I am so grateful I came back to PopCap and will continue for many years to come.
What I learned was this: shit is hard. Really hard. And knowing why it's hard, and knowing yourself, is key. It's also key to stick with stuff when it gets hard, as the reward and benefits come after. I'll be honest, being an EA executive isn't always easy, but my past experience helps me power through the tough times, because I know EA can be great, and know that PopCap has its part in that going forward.
What a great answer. I should've done a tl;dr. :-)
tl;dr Shits hard, don't be a puss, be self aware and stick with it.
lfbrick who. I never would've thought the same man that founded the company that made peggle would use the word "Puss" That's only 3 % of my vocabulary that's NSFW! :-)
What's your opinion on micro transactions within games? I'm a big fan of the microtransactions and free to play games. When done right, they extend the life of games, allow developers to keep doing awesome content, and many millions more players can play.
When done poorly, they kind of suck, but that's a design problem not a fundamental issue with freemium.
Plants vs zombies 2 is horrible now, because of those transactions. That is done Very Very poorly. I'm sorry you feel that. I think we could've done a lot better with PvZ 2 on a lot of reasons, one of which was better MTX design, but I'm curious as to why you feel that way.
I can't think of any instance when microtransactions have been done well. I can only think of times when they've been done less intrusively and unfairly than others. What are some cases in which you think they've been done well? League of Legends? Hearthstone? World of Tanks?
What's your favorite video game? Do you prefer the game or the business side of video game production? Some of my favorite non-PopCap games are Counter-Strike, Fallout (OG and 2), Drop 7, and Nethack.
I like the balance of both the business and game dev side. If done right, and aligned, a great game business can help create a huge amount of innovation. Innovative games fuel a great game business. So for me, it's about aligning great games that people love with a solid business that fuels innovation.
Which role, race, gender and deity did you ascend first? I've never ascended. It's so shameful. Probably like 500 hours and I still suck.
No matter what I play, no matter what I do, I keep coming back to NetHack. One day my Chaotic Male Monk will ascend. I love the monk. Love love love.
Ive never ascended, I started playing it in 1990. I have learned it is more about the adventure and less about the end result (or thats what I tell myself). Thanks for making me feel better. :-)
Plants Vs. Zombies meets Nethack, go! We've attempted a lot of roguelikes at PopCap. None of them making it to release.
Hi John. I absolutely LOVE PopCap games. My question is, whatever happened to Insaniquarium? I loved that game! Well, it's currently alive and well and living with Tupac in the Bahamas.
That does not sound promising. Unless you're Tupac.
Why does peggle deluxe only run at 4:3 (800x600) on steam? Peggle is like... old.
Why did you let Jeff Green, the nicest person on the internet, leave PopCap? It turns out Jeff Green, seemingly nicest guy on the internet... IS A BAD GUY!
Okay. Not really. Jeff is amazing, but we evolved and changed and his special skills of awesomeness didn't make sense. But we miss him every day. I actually cuddle with a Jeff Green Real Doll at home when I'm alone.
What's your take on the Candy Crush Saga situation? I think the idea of it being just a clone is silly, it really innovated and did great stuff to the match-3 genre.
If you're referring to the copyright kerfluffle, well, I think the copyright and trademark laws are kind of silly, that's not King's fault. Hate the game not the playa and all.
How much time have you spent playing Plants Vs Zombies? I've spent a lot of time playing PvZ.
What is your favourite strategy ? I put my sunflowers way in front and build my offense in the back.
Ever tried using only potato mines for the first 5 zombies, building 2 columns of sunflowers, then going all out double peas/machinegun, then fire? Often. I love slow build to huge offense.
Interesting, why is that? I would think you'd want the sunflowers protected. Because the sunflowers slow zombies down and you can keep firing. Trust me on this one.
Is that a nerd mullet? Nice. Very nice.
It really makes sense. Imagine if you just had one sunflower and one peashooter - if you lost your sunflower, you lost income. If you lost your peashooter, you've lost the game. It's not as straightforward in a real game, but the same principles apply. Exactly. yes yes yes.
Thank you for doing this AMA. I have always been interested in visiting the campus but I figured now would be a good time to ask my questions. EA is actually a pretty good company to work for, outside of their over reliance on making executives like myself spend weeks upon weeks in powerpoints. As an old game company, EA has had periods of bad times and good times, and I think now is a pretty good time to work at EA.
Ok, I was on the fence but now I know you're a fellow mayo hater. You're all right. And you as well!
When can we expect new content for Peggle 2? I know ‘Coming Soon’ is a relative term, but is it in the near future? Is there a plan to release multiple level packs, new characters, or just cosmetic stuff? Thanks, I’m a big fan of the work you guys do at Popcap! Duel mode just came out yesterday and it's coming out on Xbox 360 on May 7th! PEGGGLLEEE 2!!!
When is the PvZGW PC release? (I know you don't like the question;)) It's available for preorder on Origin right now so that means it's coming!
My 12 yr old wants to get into game design. What advise should I give him and how do you start get started? Make games. Make mods. Do cool stuff in minecraft. Do stuff do stuff do stuff. Lots of stuff on youtube, code.org has cool stuff but the biggest thing is encourage him to do stuff!
What's your very best life advice? Empathy. Everyone has a lot going on, their own personal stories, and it's so easy to forget that we're all human, all with insecurities and fears, and all have our struggles on the inside.
You guys did a great job with Garden Warfare! The art style is so cute that it takes away the sting of being dominated 0-3 by that stupid Sunflower. Whats something that surprised you about the game that you didn't expect before release? That the worst review we got on metacritic complained we didn't have microtransactions. It's like: WTF internet?
The internet is never pleased. You know this. It was seriously amazing.
Does crunching the toilet paper actually exist?? It's so inefficient Feels good. Like a little paper massage.
God dammit, Vechey. Like those vibrating chairs in Sharper Image.
Do you guys need a data analyst? I'd love to work with Popcap, your games are always so addicting. My girlfriend and I have spent many hours playing the two-player mode of Peggle. Also, If I apply to PopCap, can I list the referrer as 'Like those vibrating chairs in Sharper Image'? The last part is important. Send me a PM with your email address!
Is there a particular reason why you named your company PopCap? Or is it simply a random name that sounded good off the top of the head? We were Sexy Action Cool, but thought it wasn't the most mass market brand.
We needed a name that was easy to spell and that we could buy the domain for.
Would you rather fight 1 Gargantuar-sized Bonk Choy or 100 Bonk Choy-sized Gargantuars? You know what?
I'm going to ask the game team to make this a mode in GW so everyone can answer the question themselves!
When you wipe, do you fold or crunch? Crunch. And like a whole roll at once too.
Favorite cookie and toothpaste of choice? Snickerdoodles. And snickerdoodle flavored toothepaste, natch.
Thanks for taking the time to talk to fans John. Very appreciative of this and your work at Popcap over the years. I've got a couple questions. PvZ exploded in popularity thanks to mobile, so while the hardest core fans know PvZ from PopCap.com or Steam, the vast majority of players first played as a touch game.
Your excitement over Peggle 2 that culminated in an epic celebratory jump was my favorite part of E3 last year. Any plans on recreating the magic at this years E3? I think you could go for a double jump (screw physics)! If EA ever lets me on stage again, I promise I will make it spectacular.
PEGGLE 3! PEGGLE 3! EDIT: Half Life 3 confirmed I guess. I dunno what I'd have to do for Peggle 3.
Edit: Apparently, they're taking that back since people didn't like it. So hooray! So update away.
What was the deal with the Lawnmower thing? I played the PvZ 2 game a lot, but I never saw it. We often do tests. We did a test on lawnmowers as a feature to make the game more difficult as we are adding in a lot of other features that will add a lot more power to the player, and just adding more zombies doesn't make the game more fun. We opted to not release it as it felt weird to remove something customers depended on.
That's what I understood, but what I don't understand was the public outcry against the lawnmower ordeal. As far as I know, you never released the permadeath lawnmower system. There is quasi-irrational hatred for all things freemium and few of the vocal customers see the value and benefit from freemium.
Which game would you like to have been a part of the development? Great question.
Superb question.
In PopCap: Garden Warfare. I had very little to do with it outside of cheerleading the team when I could. I wish I would've done more playtesting with them and joined more internal multiplayer matches.
Out of PopCap: World of Warcraft. Just what you could learn from working on a game that big, but that well designed and crafted. So many lessons to be learned by looking at WoW and playing it, but to have been part of the dev team would've been an honor.
Or ET on Atari.
Hi John, what went into the choice to make PvZ Garden Warfare? I've been enjoying what I've seen, and may pick it up soon. Any chance of a Peggle racer coming next, to continue your genre bending tactics??? We're exploring a Peggle MMO with BioWare.
Is there any planned DLC for PvZ Garden Warfare? And if so, can you give us any details? Amazing game btw. I am really enjoying playing it and hours seem to fly by in minutes hahahaha. We've announced that DLC will be free, but that's about it at this point!
Any chance of Linux games from EA? I know that there are some EA games on ubuntu store, but do you feel that there is a place for Linux on the market other than through dedicated devices such as the Steamboxes... This question is simply TOO RIDICULOUS even for Reddit.
Care to elaborate on why this is a ridiculous question? As a linux user (specifically Arch linux, which is not tied to ubuntu-isms) I'm quite interested on the answer. I'm sorry, I was asking a lot of questions and fairly fatigued.
Candidly, it's just effort and work, and hard to justify based on overall priorities. It's a total bummer in a lot of ways, because I love new or smaller markets and investments can pay off in customer loyalty.
Why weren't some Popcap games, such as Chuzzle and Insaniquarium Deluxe, not included in the Humble PopCap Bundle? Chuzzle is complicated because we pay a royalty to a small developer who is kind of awesome but also somewhat crazy (and a friend).
I have no idea why for Insaniquarium isn't.
Can we hope for a Plants vs. Zombies Kart such as Mario Kart? You can hope for that!
Have you ever thought of putting Peggle or PvZ-themed items in Valve games? Is that possible due to your EA exclusivity? We could do that, EA and Valve aren't enemies so nothing would prevent that, but we haven't thought about it. I'll bring your idea to the team!
:D Vechey 4 prez. Vote for me.
Affirmative. Roger that.
EU is talking about that you can't put apps with in-game purchases under the 'free' section on Google Play and App Store. That is how I understood it at least. Will that affect in app purchases at all? Maybe. The thing is: many consumers may be frustrated with in app purchases, but they're also speaking with their wallets. Few customers buy premium games anymore outside of indie games. Regulation could effect freemium, but a new category could be created, and customers would probably flock there.
Plants or Zombies? Rainbows.
Also, how do you feel about Candy Crush being a blatant rip of Bejeweled but being so widely played? Candy Crush is not a rip off of Bejeweled any more than World of Warcraft is a clone of Everquest. They added and changed a lot, and did a lot of innovations on match-3.
I used to play bejewled 3 on my iPhone all the time but when I switched to android I couldn't find anything other than blitz. I like to play the casual mode and all the other modes that came with bejewled 3 like butterfly. My question is: will there ever be a bejewled 3 release (or any bejewled besides blitz) released on android? Absolutely there will be Bejeweled games released on Android!
What's your favorite pizza topping? Pepperoni.
How do you become Vice President of EA? I'm tricky like that.
Is there a chance we'll see Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare on PlayStation consoles? No announcements at this point.
Are you any good at Dota and/or LoL? I've played a LOT of LoL, and consider myself fairly good when playing a lot. Problem is it requires a lot of time.
My mains were Rammus, LeBlanc, and Udyr. Man, LeBlanc midlane was amazingly fun.
What's like working in the video game industry? Was it hard to get into? It's easy to get into if you have the passion and are willing to get your hands dirty and do stuff.
Zombies and plants, how did you think to put the 2 together? George Fan, the game designer, first had Plants vs. Aliens, but realized aliens would kick the crap out of plants.
Are there any plans to have a Peggle game with an EA's games theme? Think of it like what you guys did with combining Peggle and Valve's The Orange Box. That would be awesome.
Mass Effect Peggle where the whole internet would cry out in rage at the ending!
As far as creating games at PopCap, why did you take the puzzle genre route? With the exception of Garden Warfare, of course. We took the "games for everyone" approach, some of which are puzzles. Garden Warfare isn't a hard-core game, it's a fun game for all. That's always our focus.
I just bought your bundle, even though I already own all the games in it. How many caps can I pop? Thank you. And that's a very personal question but off the top of my head I'd say 9.
Plants vs Zombies is one of my favorite games, following the release of Garden Warfare where else do you plan to take the franchise? HOLLYWOOD!
Also, I'd just like to say how awesome I think Peggle is. Me and my dad used to competitively play it together 5/6 years ago. I love Peggle, and love duel mode and playing it competitively.
Peggle is the reason why I made my YouTube account! I was planning on putting up all my awesome peggle shots, turns out that I never did any awesome Peggle shots though :( And never look at people's shots on the internet. It can only lower your self esteem. That's what I learned.
Haha yes, I agree. My dad tried for a VERY long time to hit the 15-20 million points that's possible in the spiral level on the Master Levels. Never managed to do it :( Never give up.
What is the game that you have found yourself utterly unable to stop playing? Oh God. Drop 7. It is like the Terminator of games on my phone. I think I've escaped but I keep going back to it (only play Hardcore mode).
What was the last game you completed? I'm total crap at completing games. Last game I completed was... Valkyria Chronicles maybe.
So, the whole range of Popcap rip-offs facebook has been peddling.. Bejeweled, Peggle, I've seen all my classic popcap favorites get basically reskinned and flogged as an in-house game. It feels they are only a fart and a whistle away from releasing a game called "Undead Vs. Flora".. A huge amount of great customer innovation has come of games being relatively legal to clone. While this can be frustrating, we choose to take it as a compliment, and learn from what others have done. So I guess my answer is: at peace, and overall grateful for the ecosystem of game developers learning and innovating from each other.
Interesting to hear you guys take it easy like that. I guess its true what they say, "Being copied is the best kind of flattery". Papa pear will never have a glorious accolade of rainbows and unicorns though! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) I'm a King defender, as I think their games are always adding a lot, and Candy Crush is pretty awesome. That said, Peggle > Papa Pear. :-)
How did the transfer of ownership to EA go down? How did you feel about it at the time? Well. I'm still working there, PopCap is still doing cool stuff!
How many projects are you guys working on at any one time? How does PopCap come up with new ideas? Do you ever have game-jam like rapid prototyping sessions? We have a lot of projects, but most get killed early on. We do PopCamp, once a year where we shut the studio down for a week and work on projects, and then game teams in the early phase are very team / game design driven.
Q:Do you consider yourself an introvert or extrovert? I go back and forth. I have a huge amount of social anxiety, but power through it with smiles and genuinely liking almost everyone I know.
I won't be the first to admit that I'm not a fan of PopCap Games (not the company, but the games themselves). I suppose it's the simplicity of them. Is there any chance in the near future that you plan on catering to more of a gamer audience? Perhaps an FPS (as much as I hate them), strategy, or an RPG? Well, we just released Garden Warfare, but we're all about accessible games for everyone so even if we do an RPG, it will be mass-market!
Any word on more Bookworm Adventures? :) I see what you did there. "Any word."
ALCHEMY!! Where is my remake of Alchemy!?!?! I will give you my cat if you give me Alchemy! Pics or I don't believe it.
Will Peggle 2 come to PC and if, it would be same time as Xbox One? No comment on unannounced products.
Why does all of your games on steam are in such poor quality versions, Plants vs. Zombies GOTY for example. Why is grandma kittypants so slow? She's old. Like our games on Steam.
A tower defense game where the player is the attacker and/or. That's kind of cool. Has it been done before?
A mutli-player tower defense game where both (all?) players have defenders and attackers. (Yes, I know its rather like a traditional RTS, but I think you guys could make it fresh and interesting). We had a multiplayer mode in PvZ on console but it was super hard to balance, and we never quite got it right, or got it super fun.
You gave Peggle 2 a very public flying fist of furious joy just for existing. How many awards does Plants vs. Zombies have to win to gain an equal share of your affection? ;) 47.
0.o Are you at all concerned that Dr. Zomboss may turn to stripping to get the approval he doesn't get at home? Man, you would not believe the discussions we've had about this. It's seriously a big organizational risk, not just at PopCap but in all of EA. We actually had to present to the board of directors about risk planning in case that happens.
MBA or entrepreneurship? Which is valued more in your opinion? Entrepreneurship in my experience, but there is no one path. Just don't become a toolbag if you get an MBA. TOOLBAGS ARE NOT COOL.
I would like to say I love popcap games and are for everyone! PvZ garden Warfare is genius as my 5 year to even the missus love it. Can you see popcap taking risks and doing more "bigger" games like PvZ: Garden Warfare. Absolutely. We've always tried to push the limits of what makes sense and you can see that in games like Bookworm Adventures (RPG word game), PvZ (seriously risky honestly), Garden Warfare, and Peggle.
What is your favorite TV show that is currently airing? Arrow.
I'm honestly embarrassed. I barely watch any TV, and have only seen like 12 shows in the past ten years. Sopranos, The Wire, News Radio, Downton Abbey... and Arrow. yup. I know.
Thanks for responding! Look forward to what comes out next. Me too!
Thanks! Not really a fan of arrow but I really enjoyed The Sopranos. I may be the only fan of Arrow. It's a lonely place.
I started watching it a few days ago. It's very addicting I think it's fairly well done, with writing and acting that keeps me mostly engaged.
Just a quick question, how do you stay so sexy throughout the years? Pearl cream.
Kissing cousins ಠ_ಠ. That as well.
Any advice for anyone getting into game developement? Make games, make mods, connect with developers. The industry is hard, but awesome.
Do you consider a hamburger to be a type of sandwich, or an entity of its own? I have been thinking about this for years to be honest. One of the first PopCap games was a hamburger builder essentially and we could not decide if we wanted to venture into sandwiches in the gameplay, as I am not a fan of mayonnaise I pushed back hard on the dev team to take that out. We pivoted to Bejeweled. So I guess to answer your question I would consider a sandwich a separate entity even though upon creation in Hamburg it was technically a sandwich.
Face it, the hamburger has evolved.
I prefer the 'Royale with Cheese' route. Yayyy no feelin' it.
You might remember an old game called Psychobabble. It was a magnetic poetry type game where everyone got words and had to make a phrase relating to a topic. then everyone voted. How would you monetize it?
What is your favourite Mechanical Keyswitch? Cherry Brown.
Why did Peggle never come to Android? Because we never felt the Peggle we did on iOS was any good. I promise if we do a new Peggle for mobile it will be on Android and it will be AWESOME.
Once Peggle came out on XBLA, it was like Christmas morning. Oh, Peggle on console rocked it. Peggle 2 for xbox one is awesome, and it's coming out on xbox 360 soon.
Insaniquarium... 2? Favorite Popcap game. Second being Chuzzle. Any future plans? Thanks for the AMA :) No plans now, but Insaniquarium is often talked about to revive. It was a great game!
Will there be a companion app for PvZ Garden Warfare for mobile devices? There is a companion app already but you have to use Xbox smartglass. It's awesome. One of the most fun smart glass implementations so far!
Right. Its a "commander" mode type thing correct? What about a stat option? This game is a refreshing and very vibrant change from your typical FPS but has all of the key elements. It needs a stat app. Also, a progress bar or something to show how to level up. BTW how do you level up? By completing challenges? Is it every time an individual character levels up your rank increases as well? Basically was your feature request "stats and progress bars please?" Cuz that's kind of funny.
Are you German?
Thanks for creating such awesome games! I still play PvZ almost everyday. Did PopCap have anything to do with "lawn of the dead" in World of Warcraft (which was obviously based on PvZ)? Also, what is your favorite plant? We didn't have anything directly to do with Lawn of the dead, but we're good friends with Blizzard.

2013.09.19 01:19 FamousAspect Make purchasing present (Ascension and In-App Purchases)

Over the past year and a half as a monetization design consultant, one of my core tenants is to make purchasing present. Perhaps the biggest missteps I see in games with IAP is that the developer appears like they are doing everything possible to obscure the fact that a player can spend money within the game. When I get in front of audiences at GDC and other events, I coach that IAP are like banner ads: one must create hundreds if not thousands of impressions of the ability to spend money in order to generate a single purchase.
I am not talking about bombarding the player with frequent blocking modal dialogs. This tactic is likely to frustrate a player and cause him to quit your game permanently for another. An excellent example I point to in making purchasing present is Bejeweled Blitz.
Screenshot of Bejewled Blitz's two between game menus
If I were to open up Bejeweled Blitz and play 10 matches of the game, I would see the Add Coins button 20 times within that session. It is not blocking my progress or making a nuisance of itself. But simply by playing the game and following the path of least resistance, I see the ability to spend money regularly. Purchasing is present.
This is in stark contrast to one of my favorite mobile games, Ascension, a game that vexes more than any other when it comes to IAP. I love Ascension. For literally two years I have played at least three matches of Ascension daily. It is my solitaire. I love it when they release new card packs, and would gladly pay $5 or more for a new promo pack of 6 new cards right now, let alone a full game expansion like Immortal Heroes that drastically changes the game with new rules and 36 new, unique cards.
I do not follow Ascension on Facebook or Twitter. I do not subscribe to an email newsletter. Expansion pack releases do not make headlines on the game sites I follow regularly. The only method I have of hearing news of new IAP (which I desperately want as a core player) is through the app itself. An app I interact with multiple times daily. I have money. I want to give it to the developers. But they make it exceptionally hard.
Screenshot of the app update patch notes showing a new promo pack for purchase
The only way I am able to learn that I can give the developers my money is through App Store updates. Specifically I have to know that, as shown above, Ascension puts the announcement of new IAP in the patch notes. I update my apps maybe once every two or three weeks (and expect that is an above average frequency across all iOS users). Sometimes it is days or weeks after an expansion has launched before I make the 3 clicks it takes for me to see this information.
Once I have, I have to continue jumping through hoops in order to purchase my pack. I have to update the app and open it. Then I get to the Main Menu, which is no help.
Screenshot of the main menu after updating the app
I have to remember that a new purchase is available and navigate to the in game store.
Screenshot of the in-game store
In the case of the days old Promo Pack 2, I have to remember that the new content was a promo pack and navigate to the appropriate tab.

Before I am finally able to give them the money I desperately want to alleviate myself of.
1 account confirmation, 9 clicks and an obscure user flow I am more likely than not to ignore later, and I have finally completed a purchase that I am 100% primed to make.
I believe that Ascension communicates these new purchases via notifications, but I (like many iOS users) am annoyed by frequent notification spam and turn it off for almost all apps. For my favorite iOS game, one I have played almost every day for literally two years, one I am burning to give more money to, purchasing could not possibly be obscure.
Making purchasing present would be trivial. I see the Main Menu every time I open the app. Why not implement an in-game notification badge on the In-App Store button when new purchases are available? Why not integrate a spot for a banner add into the Main Menu to alert me of new features, content and updates? Why not integrate an in-game interstitial that notifies me of new content between matches after every 5th or 10th game and turns off after I've seen it 10 times?
How many Ascension players have no idea that 3 expansion packs and 2 promo packs are available for purchase because purchasing is not present?
Please Stoneblade/Playdek. I have money. I want to give it to you. Make it easier for me to do so.
