While they hadn’t said as much to the Secretary-General or the public, it was becoming increasingly clear to members of UIDT that they were closing in on the last remnants of the computer virus scourge. Dividing themselves into teams, some Agents picked out the most likely logs and accounts to search for suspicious activities. Others plotted more offensive maneuvers, choosing suspicious targets to strike, consequences be damned. Some even willingly offered their own computers as testing material.
The attacks began in unison. For hours, there was very little noise other than keyboards clacking, mouses clicking, and whispered conversations about the work being done. Then, without warning, computer screens began to turn blue, forcing Agents to leave their stations.
Tensions were high by the end of the day, but no one looked ready to stop the fight.

2024.05.15 02:49 Bha-Ku HP all in one running Windows 7- no password and no recovery disk.

My grandmother recently passed, and we are fairly certain the most up to date version of her will is on this computer. I have tried to go through the startup repair and change the password through the command prompt, but when it gets time to access the files Recovery Manger screen is what pops up showing “Cyberlink” and “Contact HP Support”- not allowing me to alter anything. The only options are Microsoft System Restore, Microsoft Startup repair tool, System Recovery, and File Backup Program. Does anybody know what other way I can use to access this computer? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

2024.05.15 02:47 keeperofmadness What changes would you want to see in a 2nd edition of Vaesen?

I recently saw someone share a pretty negative post about Vaesen on a discord group, and there was an outpouring of folks sharing ideas for how the user might be able to better tweak or adjust the game to work the way they wanted it to. It got me thinking and I was just curious -- what would you want to see changed or updated if Vaesen ever got a 2nd or revised edition? For me, there are three big things.
So how about you? What kinds of changes, updates or revisions would you want to see in Vaesen?

2024.05.15 01:20 kiskaddon Recovery after deleting recovery partition

I have an SPX that had been used in a work environment and the bitlocker was tripped, with nowhere to get the recovery key. I've gone down that road as far as it would go, and no dice. So, I tried to reset with the official recovery image, and it would not boot from the drive I had formatted and configured correctly.
I got to the point where I probably should have asked here first, but instead just wiped all partitions with diskpart, which highlights how unfamiliar I am with Surface devices. Now there's no baked in recovery utility to use to try and boot from, since the "recovery image" relies on that.
Now I am attempting to use UUP Dump to get a win11 arm64 iso file, but I have already attempted once, and there seem to be no drivers in the image created. I couldn't get any input to work, even when plugging in mouse/keyboard. No touch or folio keyboard.
Am I completely out of luck? Is there some deep dark depths where I can find drivers to put in the iso? Or is there some other miraculous way I can get this working again?

2024.05.14 22:56 HerrBeckers Best recovery approach to DVDs

I have about 20 CDs/DVDs for recovery (some are bot damaged, I just assume it to be safe). Some have been weirdly damaged from close proximity to an rfid reader, some have been quickly and completely erased (is recovery possible?) and some are just old.
What is the equivalent to a HDD image with DVDs? (Or is it just the logical image the drive gets? Any recommended drives?) Also, what software should I use, ex. Is IsoBuster superior to DDrescue? I want to get the best possible image.

2024.05.14 20:27 YessirYettti Best option for Data Retrieval for my external hard drive (Mac)

Best option for Data Retrieval for my external hard drive (Mac)
  • External Hard Drive: My Passport 1TB WD Western Digital Portable
  • Operating System: Mac
  • The drive has never been physically opened.
  • Drive has mostly mp4 files on it, with some music & photos.
Problem with External Hard drive started this morning. It’s a relatively new drive but hasn’t used it often. It is possible it may have been dropped 2-3 times via a young relative in the last few weeks.
I was using my MacBook M1 as normal & I needed to view some files on the drive. I plugged I it in & got a beep after a few seconds, then the drive popped up. I was able to see the folders in the drive, video previews and nothing was gone.
I’m aware that if you have a problem with the drive, transfer all the files away from that drive ASAP. So I decided to copy my folders off this problem drive to an empty one. The copying started well & then it stopped after 4-5 minutes. I was able to get two folders of video files. None of the video was damaged & everything was named as I named it. Also I put color tags on some of the video which was still there.
This tells me that the hard drive read those two folders correctly.
I decided to eject the hard drive & try again. Then the drive wasn’t being recognized by the Mac. I decided to plug it back in & it was then recognized again but now it’s starting to slow down my computer & in particular the finder. Now when I click on the drive, the finder just stops working & the computer slows.
So I decided to plug it into my IMAC & have the same slowing of apps & the finder. So I made the choice to just wait, not run any apps. Then I clicked on the finder & opened the drive in a new tab. Lagged a bit but it worked. I was able to see all my files again. So the files are intact at least. Then I decided to copy a music folder from the drive, to empty space on the IMAC & it stopped again after a few minutes after 1 BEEP. I did test the music from the transferred file & it worked perfectly. No damage
So on two separate computers, I’m able to copy small amount of files until I get a beep, then the copying stops. Obviously the drive is going bad. It seems like the main issue is the read/write head in the drive. Seems like it’s not fully functioning
I also made a decision to purchase DISK DRILL. Which is hard drive recovery software for MAC. I scanned the drive but it found nothing & gave me this response.
https://preview.redd.it/45za59reqf0d1.png?width=1740&format=png&auto=webp&s=fe313f280dfd2f0d81c330dcf750fbfefb85917d
I’m then giving the option of byte-to byte backup but I’m not sure if it will retrieve the files, given the scan found none.
So currently: trying to retrieve files from seemingly damaged drive. Files seem retrievable. The drive is still plugged into IMAC. No beeping but I can hear some noises if I’m really close. Sounds are not loud or jagged, just normal. Data recovery software doesn’t seem like it will retrieve. Not sure. To add the drive is also recognized by DISK UTILITY.
Trying to figure out, what’s the next best option to retrieve my files. Seems like the files are retrievable. Only been a few hours since this problem has occurred.

2024.05.14 20:02 jzazre9119 24.05 and PHP (Ubuntu)

I wanted to add my own interesting experience here for anyone on Ubuntu 22.04 running Bookstack v24.02.3 and Nginx.
The latest Bookstack v24.05 requires PHP 8.1 or higher. FYI, stock 22.04 has PHP v8.1.x, so you should be OK.
I thought - why not upgrade the Ubuntu distribution to 24.04 (latest at time of this writing) in order to get PHP 8.3 and hedge against future releases? I've been able to do Ubuntu in-place upgrades for the last one or two releases without issue. We are on hypervisors so snapshotting and attempting upgrades has very little risk.
My initial installation of Ubuntu basically stock wizard-click - not much attention to partitioning because everything is running on a SAN / virtual machine. So the /boot partition was the abysmally small 450MB or so default, and the rest of everything is on an LVM2 partition which can be easily managed in various ways.
As it turns out, you have to first upgrade to 23.x and then to 24.04 beacuse the normal release cadence doesn't get exposed until August 2024 when they release 24.04.1. The upgrade stopped short because there wasn't enough room on the /boot partition to support this process. Running apt autoremove didn't come anywhere close to solving the problem.
And thus began my hours long trail of tears attempting to expand the /boot drive. Never did I imagine how difficult this would be to do, and I sorely wish I had paid more attention to partitioning it properly in the first place, or (despite 'best practices') putting the /boot in the LVM parition.
Let's just say you'll need Kubuntu mountable .iso, and a carefully curated series of steps to do it properly. Here are my steps in general; you still need to know what you're doing, this is not a point click manual. Try at your own risk, this is just a hope it could save people time.

Assumptions

How to

This was performed on 22.04.x LTS.
Before starting, know the boot partition format (ext2, ext4, etc.) and its size. It should hopefully be easily recognizable by its very small size. You can get this by simply Do: "df -h"
It's going to use the old partition to boot, because we haven't updated the rest yet in the live system. Once the system is back up, do the following:
You will have a partition left that you can't do anything about, or at least that I'm aware of. Considering it's probably 500MB, it's not a worry to me. If you look at it in Kubuntu, it is unallocated space.

2024.05.14 19:48 TechAlien7 Poweredge R630: How screwed is my Virtual Disk/Server?

Hello,
I have a customer who's R630 is not successfully booting.
We were getting Error UEFI0116.
With Error UEFI0116 we were not able to boot to System Setup through F2. It was giving us only access to the Integrated RAID Controller Configuration Utility which showed;
Virtual Disk 0: VDisk1, RAID10, 2.181TB, Failed.
I was also able to check the Associated Physical Disks and it was only showing bays 2,5,6,7.
I had to make some changes in order to clear that error and be able to boot and access any other menus. I tried troubleshooting with the information the customer provided and seeing if any possible bios changes through a potential firmware update were giving us errors that were not allowing boot to fully complete.
Unfortunately we kept hitting that wall:"Virtual Disk 0: VDisk1, RAID10, 2.181TB, Failed."
I saw a number of logs like this:
//
Disk 0 in Backplane 1 of Integrated RAID Controller 1 is not functioning correctly.
Virtual Disk 0 on Integrated RAID Controller 1 has failed.
Disk 0 in Backplane 1 of Integrated RAID Controller 1 was reset.
//
...
I have continued troubleshooting and moved some disks around to test the bays and my results are weird. For example, some disks work on some slots but not others. ie; Disk 0 will not work in Bay 0, but will work in Bay 6. Then it stops working completely.
Other times the menu "Physical Disk Management" will show
"Physical Disk 00:01:02: HDD..."
Sometimes it will show:
"Physical Disk --:--:02: HDD..."

My issue are...
I don't have a working configuration to compare this to.
I don't have any information on this system from the customer.
His brother set it up long ago and he is now retired and does not know much about the system or how it was configured.
I know the RAID was in RAID10, but that is all.
I don't know if there were any hot spares. I don't know what is the minimum amount of drives we need to rebuild the RAID. (IF we were to get Data Recovery on some possibly failed drives.)
I am drawing at straws trying to fix this.
The customer suggested I re-seat the PERC controller and cabling with the power off. (Probably suggested by his brother). Now no previous virtual disks show.

(TL:DR;) Some questions:
1) Back when there was a Virtual Disk in the PERC Menu; I went to View Associated Physical Disks and it only showed 2,5,6,7. Does this mean this was the ONLY disk Associated? Or was it only showing the Associate disks that were available?
2) How screwed is this system? I read once a RAID reaches Failed State it is difficult to recover. Customer did absolutely no maintenance on this system and left it very neglected. His main goal is to get one data file for his "Dispatching Software".
Worst comes to worst we can't fix this RAID, but would we be able to at least use Data Recovery to try to find this specific file?
Help much appreciated.

2024.05.14 19:41 cp_techhelp Help Troubleshooting Acer Aspire EasyStore H340 Home Server

Hi everyone,
I'm reaching out for assistance with troubleshooting an Acer Aspire EasyStore H340 network-attached storage server, which I'm repairing for a friend.
The server is running Windows Home Server, and the laptop used for accessing it is running Windows 7. We want to figure out a way to use the home server despite it being so old.
Here's a summary of the issues I'm encountering and the steps I've taken so far:
  1. Accessing the Console: Unfortunately, we've forgotten the password to access the Windows Home Server console. Attempts to reinstall the client resulted in a network connectivity error.
  2. Connection: Despite being on the same network, the tray icon on the Windows 7 laptop indicates that the home server and laptop are not connected. We're unsure why they aren't connecting.
  3. Resetting the Server: Following the instructions in the online manual, we attempted to reset the server using a paperclip on the reset button, but it didn't yield any changes or improvements in connectivity.
  4. Assessing Indicators: After booting, the System Status indicator turns solid red. The HDD Access indicators for slots 2 and 3 turn red regardless of whether disks are present. The HDD Status indicator doesn't react despite the access indicators turning red.
  5. Running Diagnostic Test: We tried to run a diagnostic test using an "annie.gho" file on a USB drive, but it didn't work as expected. The HDD Access indicators didn't flash, and no log file was generated. We’re not exactly sure how to use that file to run the test though, so it could be an error on our part.
Current issues include:
There is currently no data saved on the disks so we’re open to any factory reset type of methods.
If anyone has experience troubleshooting Acer Aspire EasyStore H340 servers or similar NAS devices, I would greatly appreciate any advice or guidance on resolving these issues.

2024.05.14 19:19 InBetweenTheLiminal Post-op MD experience

I wanted to track my progress and also maybe provide helpful insight for those looking to get surgery. I'll be updating this every few days.
SYMPTOMS/CONTEXT:
I 28f had a severe herniated disk at the l4/l5 disc since 2021 was working towards treatment in 2022 but lost my insurance at the new year of 2023 and went the entire year without seeing any doctors. In Dec of 2023 i was able to get a new job and back on the original insurance and pick up where i left off. At the time of my most recent MRI in Feb 2024 the herniation was described as severe causing severe stenosis and nerve impingement it measured 19x10x19mm. My symptoms continued to worsen to the point I was unable to do much of anything, sitting, standing, laying down all hurt, I barely slept because I'd be in severe pain from laying down within a few hours. I couldn't drive, I lost weight because I couldn't sit or stand long enough to cook and just laid in bed tossing and turning. I didn't shower, brush my hair, walk my dog, clean my house or go anywhere unless I absolutely had to. I could likely count the number of times I left my house between February and May on both hands. Pain was majority in my left side, hip and gluten, behind my knee and I had numbness in the front of my lower left leg and the top of my left foot. My right leg and foot had existing nerve damage because I have had this issue before from a snowboarding accident. I had existing numbness and weakness in the right leg which worsened to the point I couldn't wiggle my toes and had poor balance. I have saddle area numbness, urinary retention and incontinence and bowel incontinence when my stool is too soft. Again all of which worsened.
THE SURGERY:
I had surgery on May 9th, I was expected to be admitted for 1 day because my surgeon expected he would need to remove bone on the right side not just the left to get all the disc material. He was able to open me up on the left side and get everything out. However, my disc material had pressed my nerve into the bone and wore it very very thing and the dura tore causing a CSF leak. A neurosurgeon assisted in closing up the leak. My surgeon was impressed by the size of the herniation and took pictures to show me at our next post op appointment, saying my entire disc had essentally been blown out into the small space which was what was making my symptoms so bad, there was no room left for my nerve. There were no complications.
RECOVERY
DAY 1-5: I ended up having to lay flat for 48 hours due to the dural tear. After which I was allowed to sit up. The pain was mostly from soreness but I have having nerve pain that pulsed from my back into my glute. It would wake me up out of my drug induced sleep. I also ended up getting my period on the 2nd day which caused a lot of back soreness and cramping. I think a lot of my discomfort was due to being stuck in bed because PT and OT had not seen me and I wasn't able to leave the bed unattended. On day 3 I was able to get up and they removed my foley and the little leg wraps that fill with air to keep up with circulation. I was able to go to the bathroom and move pretty well with my cane around the room. This continued until day 5 where I was able to meet with PT and OT we walked the halls of the hospital and I was permitted to go home. The car ride was extremely uncomfortable. I was able to shower for the first time since the day before surgery using a shower chair and while difficult to not twist etc it was tolerable. The least painful shower ive had in almost 2 years. I found myself extremely sore by the end of day 5.
DAY 6: (05/14) as of this post this is my current day. I still have the throbbing pain but mostly this seems to be stirred up by movement. Mostly going from a laying down to sitting position. Though it does still randomly occur while I am laying down but not nearly as much. I'm about half way through the day and have found that laying on my right side is far more comfortable than my left side. I have tried sitting in a recliner and just leaning back but this seems to put too much pressure on my back and incision site so I have been mostly in bed or laying on my couch which is very firm and easy to get up and down from. I won't have anyone staying with me after today and I'm confident that I'll be able to handle things on my own. Other than the pain relief I have not noticed any improvement to the other symptoms I had, numbness, weakness etc remain the same.

2024.05.14 19:02 xLokiii1 Need help in reinstalling Lion OS X on an old Macbook Pro

My friend has an old Macbook Pro which hasn't been opened for a long time. A few days ago, we tried opening it, but the screen only seems to display a Folder Icon with a question mark. We were able to get it to internet recovery mode using Option/Option + Command + R. Both ways prompts us to connect to a Wifi and use internet recovery mode.
Using a different device, we browsed the net for a while, and it seems like we need to reinstall the Lion OS on it. We tried doing this through internet recovery mode but it displays an error. We searched the internet for answers and we found out that old OS such as lion are no longer available through internet recovery mode.
Using a Windows PC(it's the only available option) and Transmac, we made a bootable drive that contains Lion OS, however the Install Option doesn't seem to appear(started the macbook using the "option" button). The only choice given to us is to connect to Wifi and use the internet recovery mode which would then load for a very long time.
Here are the available options presented to us after the very long loading bar: - Restore from time machine back up - Reinstall Mac OS X - Get help offline - Disk utility (we confirmed that the flashdrive is readable because it appears here)
The model is a Macbook Pro A1286 (we don't know which specific year tho)
We are currently stuck and don't know what to do. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

2024.05.14 18:44 _Belgarath Moving current install to bigger disk

Hi,
Even if I consider myself a rather experienced user, I finally reach to this community after struggling for more than 2 days.
So here was my disk setup before I start messing everything, I then will explain my difficulties.
The partition layout of this disk is as following: - 1Gb ext4 boot partion - 188Gb btrfs partition (with "/" and "home" subvolumes) - 32Gb swap partition
This Nobara SSD was becoming a bit small for me so I bought a Samsung SSD 870 QVO (SATA) of 1To as replacement.
I then tried to move my install to this new disk: First I booted on a gparted live ISO copied all partitions 1 by 1 but since the partitions UUIDs where kept the same, when I tried to boot with both the old and new disks, I found out the swap partition used was the one from the old disk.
So I tried to boot without the old disk connected, but wasn't able to reach Grub.
I then changed my strategy and did a fresh Nobara install then tried to copy my old partition onto the new one using btrfs tooling, but still couldn't achieve to boot and get the grub menu. I tried to change partions UUIDs, edit the /etc/fstab to reflect these changes, tried to use a boot repair live ISO but nothing worked. With the boot repair ISO I got an error "Please enable a repository containing the [grub-efi] in the software sources of Fedora Linux" that I could not manage to fix.
And to make matters worse, I managed in the process to corrupt the source partition, I don't know how, so it's not recognized as a btrfs partition anymore. "Luckily" if have a copy of this partition in my new install (that is still not booting) but resized so it takes advantage of the larger disk space, the only difference is that the /etc/fstab file has been modified.
Here is the current layout of my 2 disks: old one: - 1Gb ext4 boot flagged partion (no esp flag) - 188Gb unrecognized filesystem partition - 32Gb swap partition
new one: - 600Mb FAT32 with "boot, esp" flags partition - 1Gb "boot" named ext4 partition - 895Gb btrfs partition - 32Gb swap partition.
Now I want at least to restore my small disk so I can at least boot again then if possible the better option is to be able to boot on this new disk with my old data.
Can you help me please ?
PS: Sorry for my English, it's not my native language

2024.05.14 18:07 Red_Pterodactyl Trying to recover images from a formated sd card

Hi Evreybody,
Yesterday I've accidentaly formated an sd card with some pictures I need for work without backing it up (I did it directly on the camera menu, model: sony a6000 ). I've been messing around with data recovery software such as DiskDrill and Recuva but nothing is showing up, I'm pretty sure they're lost but before giving up I wanted to see if anybody had a second opinion.
Thanks in advance!

How to Disable/Enable Prefetch and Superfetch in Windows 11 and Windows 10

Table of Contents:
The Windows 11 and Windows 10 features “Prefetch” and “SuperFetch” provide startup acceleration for frequently used applications.
What is Prefetch and Superfetch in Windows?
Even when you're not using them, Superfetch loads frequently used programs into memory to speed up startup.
Prefetch is a similar feature which was introduced already with Windows XP that gathers data about programs to also help them start faster.
To achieve this, the prefetch algorithm tries to anticipate when data most probably won´t be available in cache to directly load it from the respective drive. This data in the form of prefetch files is located in the prefetch folder C:\Windows\Prefetch. You can consider the prefetch files as a specific type of cache files.
Contrary to many blog posts, disabling Prefetch and SuperFetch for SSD drives is actually unnecessary. It is true that Prefetch and SuperFetch won´t provide a huge advantage for starting applications from SSD drives, as they are fast anyway. In this respect one could actually switch off the service.
But Windows 11 and Windows 10 already do this automatically for Superfetch if an SSD is installed as system drive. This means you don't have to worry about the lifetime of older SSD drives because of ongoing SuperFetch-requests.
On older Windows 10 PCs with normal hard disks it may make sense to deactivate SuperFetch in some rare cases. This is because the service causes increased system load and significantly more hard disk requests.
Without SuperFetch, some slower computers even work better, though the startup of certain applications may take a little longer. However, this is more an exception than the rule.
Prefetch actually should be always stay enabled, even on slower HDDs. Whether you perform better with or without SuperFetch, you have to find out for yourself. Below, you find the necessary steps to disable Prefetch and Superfetch.

2024.05.14 16:25 AreYouOKtho How to reverse this?

How to reverse this?
Anyone know of any resting poses that relieve or help reverse this?. Looks like a classic disk herniation/dehydrated s1/l5. Im going above and beyond with my recovery as I really want to avoid surgery. Im working on my core and glute strength 4/5x a week. Im also trying some resting poses such as lying on my front with pillows underneath my pelvis to try and open up the lower back and help my body reabsorb the bulge although when i get up it aches alot. Anyone with similar MRI results who have had success/relief would be really appreciated, tia :)

2024.05.14 16:12 bicebird Stock looking consoles with complete romsets?

Very much a thought experiment as don't have anywhere near the disposable income needed lol but wondering if it's possible to store the entire rom/iso sets for every retro console (up to 7th gen?) in a playable form without any externally obvious hardware changes
So flashcarts are fine because they use cartridge slots as intended but no optical disk emulators that remove the original drive or usb hard drives sticking out the back. The idea of being able to take them back in time to when the console was released and the average player wouldn't notice until they boot it up and see a list of every game is pretty cool, like if your friend's uncle actually did work at Nintendo this is the magic console they'd bring back from work
It seems the cartridge based systems are pretty straight forward, everdrives exist for all the popular ones and support SD cards which can easily store more than enough, i.e NES ~1.5GB, ~SNES 4GB, N64 ~16GB, although file system and folder limits might complicate things a bit?
Optical media is where storage sizes start to get too big for the 2TB max size for current SD cards, Dreamcast is <1TB but OG Xbox is >16TB so you'd have to swap to HDDs/SSDs, most of Sony's and Microsoft's had support for HDDs and there's tons of complications with ide/sata support and bios limitations but feel like you could mod your way around them?
The Wii seems bit more difficult as it's >6TB so too big for SD cards and not much space internally but especially if you removed the case for a 8TB 2.5 SSD you should be able to, possibly with some hardware mods but going by the amount of DIY portables that's definitely an option
Kind of pointless to include releases for every region and revision but guess you could argue there's plenty of games no one will bother playing so the whole thing is just for bragging rights. I just really like the idea from a preservation point of view of having like a museum where you can interact with the consoles the same way as when they were released but also play every game?

2024.05.14 15:48 Kermit_thee_fr0g Trying to recover deleted Pages files

This is my first time posting on here but I was wondering if anyone could help me out. Also I'm in a rush so sorry if my grammaspelling is bad.
Last week I tried to upload some of my older university class notes from Pages to Google Drive. After that I dumped the Apple files on my macbook into the trash bin then proceeded to empty it. But it seems that most of those documents somehow never uploaded & idk if it's possible to recover the documents.
I tried to use Time Machine to recover the files but I don't have a backup disk/location registered. I'm also trying out DiskDrill but I can't find any of the document atm.
Is there any way to recover the documents?
Update: I was able to find the documents through iCloud’s data recovery. I’m also setting up Time Machine to avoid making the same mistake in the future. Thanks for all the advice.

2024.05.14 15:13 Positive-Way8184 Standalone media task sequence asking for disk 1 after reboot

We are using a standalone media task sequence .iso mounted on windows 10 to start the IPU task sequence. Reason fot it is that we are not allowed attach USB devices and computers do mot have DVD drive. After the computer updates OS and reboots, it asks for Disk #1 for task sequence since mounted iso is no longer present. So, I created HKLM/ Softaware/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run "Mount ISO" with path to .iso file. But we still get the same error. After, the task sequence fails and I logon, I can see that iso is mounted. How can I make sure iso is mounted early enough for the task sequenece see it after the reboot and continue? Also, I thought just copy the entire media contenet to a directory ans start. But when i launch the task sequence from a copied directory it does not start. Any ideas?
Thank you, Sung

2024.05.14 14:30 Far-Huckleberry8906 [Step-by-Step Tutorial] How to Recover Erased Hard Drive on Mac

[Step-by-Step Tutorial] How to Recover Erased Hard Drive on Mac
https://preview.redd.it/8imq252qyd0d1.png?width=840&format=png&auto=webp&s=ced0f510fc79e9961b2f6559f8b10b205420fbeb
In the event of accidentally deleting files from your hard drive or formatting the drive by mistake, don’t worry! In most cases, the deleted or lost files can be recovered with the right tools and methods.
How does a hard drive work?
A hard drive consists of one or more spinning disks (called platters) coated with a magnetic material. Data is stored on the disk in tiny patterns of magnetism that can be read by special sensors called read/write heads.
When you delete a file from your hard drive, the data is not actually erased. Instead, the files are just marked as “deleted” and the space is made available for new data. The data remains on the disk until it is overwritten by new data.
This is why it’s possible to recover deleted files from a hard drive. The data is still there, but it can be difficult to access without the right tools and methods.
Recovering an erased hard drive on a Mac
Recovering an erased hard drive on a Mac can be a daunting task, but with the right tools and a little bit of know-how, it is definitely possible.
Here is a step-by-step tutorial:
  1. Back up any important data. Before attempting to recover your erased hard drive, it is important to back up any important data that is currently on your Mac. This will ensure that you do not lose any valuable information during the recovery process. Consider using Time Machine, a built-in backup feature of your Mac.
  2. Download and install data recovery software. There are a number of data recovery software programs available for Mac, such as Disk Drill, EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard for Mac, and Stellar Phoenix Data Recovery for Mac. Choose one and download it onto your Mac. Once it is downloaded, install the software by following the on-screen instructions.
  3. Connect the erased hard drive to your Mac. The next step is to connect the erased hard drive to your Mac. You can do this by using a USB cable or an external hard drive enclosure. Once the hard drive is connected, open the data recovery software that you downloaded in Step 2.
  4. Scan the erased hard drive. Once the data recovery software is open, you will be prompted to select the erased hard drive that you want to recover. Select the hard drive and click the “Scan” button. The software will then begin to scan the hard drive for any recoverable data.
  5. Preview and recover the data. After the scan is complete, you will be presented with a list of files that can be recovered. You can preview the files to ensure that they are the ones you want to recover. Once you have identified the files you want to recover, select them and click the “Recover” button. The software will then begin to recover the data and save it to a location of your choosing.
  6. Check the recovered data. After the recovery process is complete, you should check the recovered data to ensure that it is complete and in good condition. If you find that some files are missing or corrupted, you may need to repeat the recovery process using different recovery software or settings.
Tips for recovering erased data on a Mac
  • Act quickly. The sooner you attempt to recover your erased data, the better. The longer you wait, the more likely it is that the data will be overwritten by new data, making it unrecoverable.
  • Use a data recovery software program. Data recovery software programs are designed to scan your hard drive for deleted files and recover them. There are a number of different data recovery software programs available, so be sure to choose one that is compatible with your Mac and the type of data you are trying to recover.
  • Be patient. The data recovery process can take some time, especially if you are trying to recover a large amount of data. Be patient and let the data recovery software program do its job.
Conclusion
Recovering an erased hard drive on a Mac can be a challenging task, but with the right tools, knowledge, and a bit of patience, it is definitely possible. By following the step-by-step tutorial outlined in this article, you can recover your valuable data and get your hard drive back up and running. It’s important to always keep a backup of your data and to make sure you understand the cause of the data loss so that you can take appropriate action to prevent it from happening again in the future.
Additional tips
  • If you are unable to recover your data using data recovery software, you may need to send your hard drive to a professional data recovery service.
  • If your hard drive has been physically damaged, it may not be possible to recover your data.
  • It is important to note that data recovery software is not a guarantee. In some cases, the data may be unrecoverable.
