In the course of conversation with 2 different Vietnam veterans at 2 different ranges, I have respectfully brought attention to my m16a1 651 build. Both uttered nearly identical, "I hate that rifle." Followed by very interesting perspectives on why as well as their experiences in the war.
To be clear, I never assumed any veteran would be happy to see one, nor was I eager to show it off. Neither hated the rifle because it failed them personally nor were they mad at me for bringing it up.
The first person fought early in the war trained on the m14. He hated that they took away a 1000 yard rifle with the much shorter effective range. They all knew about the issues with the rifle so they were afraid to trust it. He said they were pinned down in trenches from shells and there were wounded but no one wanted to run for help because they didn't trust the m16.
The guy I spoke with today didn't like it because he thought it was stupid to replace the 308 with 223. He was an m60 attack helicopter gunner. He said he was sitting on cases of 308 and didn't understand why they didn't keep that round.
Interesting stories... He said they would pull pins on m33 grenades and place them in masonry jars with the lever in place. They would drop them from the helicopter so they would be delayed until the glass broke on the ground.
Also, if a patrol came across an ak47 left on the ground, they would remove a cartridge, take the round out and replace the powder with c4. Then put it back on the ground. You can imagine the consequences. He said the vc would stage good landing areas with explosives and booby traps. Diabolical. He also heated his c rations with c4. This is stuff no one could imagine who wasn't there.
Both of them were spit on and called awful names when they came home. They quickly ditched their uniforms when they hit American soil. That makes me sad. I said "welcome home" to both and say the same to any veteran on this sub.

So, now that I'm facing mature skin and rosacea on my nose I've decided to get back on Tretinoin i needed to up my SPF game. With the tret I'm hoping to reduce wrinkles, even out skin tone, reduce acne/lighten hyper pigmentation, and hopefully help my rosacea ridden nose. It gets a LOT of sun and is ALWAYS RED.

2024.05.14 21:30 Much-Shopping-9430 [Routine Help] Should I exfoliate more?

So l am very diligent with my skin care, and I am not particularly upset about anything other than the occasional breakout (... and a bad case of sebaceous filaments).
However, my biggest issue ever since I was about 13(im 21 now) has been an incredibly FLAKY T zone. Nose in particular. It's not just flaky, it peels. Im sorry for the image i have just given u. But it bothers me especially because it becomes so much more visible when I am wearing makeup It is never painful, unless my skin is as dry as sandpaper that day.
And you can obviously tell that it's DEAD skin. And although I do have a dru skin type, i really struggle with "black heads", or better labelled as sebaceous filaments. I've been suspecting seborrheic dermatitis for a while now but have never gone to a professional to actually confirm it.
My current routine is all directed towards hydration and moisturising. I have noticed that base makeup that includes harsh alcohols and fragrances aggravates it further. When I take my make up off with micellar water during the day, i need to apply some thin cream on top!
Otherwise its the sandpaper moment I know that, technically, one shouldn't leave micellar water on the face.
I have tried: -over exfoliating (obviously fail) - excluding exfoliating completely -Not washing my face in the mornings ( surprised to say: it got worse) -Slugging (only broke me out) -Only physically exfoliating -Only chemically exfoliating
My current routine has helped me minimise this issue on my forehead and chin, but alas, my nose persists. It currently goes like this:
• the inkey list oat oil cleanser (recent addition) • Eucerin DermaClean Hyaluron cleansing gel
• ONCE A WEEK 2% bha exfoliating liquid
• Q&A niacinamide toner • balea expert plump and glow serum (it has polyglutamic acid) • cosr snail essence (a fave, always come back to it)
• IN THE MORNING Q&A vitamic C serum
• la roche posay sensitive fluide • La roche posay Cicaplast Baume b5+
-* twice a week* Retinol at 0.4
And the obvious sunscreen every day! ♥️🥰

Hi Courtney! I'm a huge fan of your channel and I've been watching you for a while now, and I would just die if you read my story! It's gonna be a little longer since I don't want to miss any important details. Also tag warning for some serious topics (drug use and pedophelia)
Okay so, let's start back in 2012. My mom worked in the NICU taking care of little premature babies. (I had been 6 weeks early, which inspired my mom) I was 11 at the time that she met her ex-husband, my ex-stepdad. We can just call him B (for bastard lol). They worked together, he was funny and stole her heart. Well at the time he was going through a divorce but lived in a house twenty minutes from where we were living at the time. B had told my mom that things were over with his ex for sure (he told his ex wife at that time that he wanted to work on things! She was so blindsided by the divorce papers!) <--- of course we didn't know about any of that until recently End of 2012 comes, he marries my mom and my older sister move in with him and his 7 year old son in this three bedroom house. Two rooms upstairs and a master bedroom downstairs. Now of the top two rooms, my ex stepbrother (lets call him C) had the larger room, while my older sister (who was high school age, I think she was a senior) and I shared the other room and slept in bunk beds.
Now C had a problem with sleeping in his room at night. He would tell us about how he was afraid of the closet (the closet also had a tiny door that led up to the attic). Ever since he was little it was always the same problem. C was simply terrified of something in the house. He had an experience where someone woke him up and warned him that there was a spider, he started screaming and sure enough they found a brown recluse spider under his bed.
Then my mom gets pregnant and gives birth to my little brother, H. My sister had moved out pretty much as soon as possible. B was awful. He would belittle us and talk down to us, constantly try to make everyone feel stupid around him- he had to be the smartest one around at all times. He was an asshole, and he would say rude stuff and then complain that we were taking him too serious and he was just being sarcastic. That we 'didn't get his sense of humor'. And for a while, he had my mom wrapped right around his finger. He was manipulating her from the very beginning. He even treated her like shit most of the time. 8th grade all the way through the end of my senior year I endured his treatment every day. I had to be careful about what I said at all times, about who came over, about being too loud at night. If my room was messy, he would take a garbage bag and take all of my stuff- I had to 'earn' back my stuff.
When the baby was born they had to do renovations on the house. There was a ton of attic space, so they ended up breaking into it- a game room leading to two bedrooms and a bathroom. This was when things went from humanly hellish to supernaturally chaotic. During the renovations before any walls went up and it was mostly just wood and plastic, C and I had seen a dark shadow of a man pass behind a plastic tarp- and it was so clear because the sunlight was coming from the other side. When I checked there was no body there. Once everything was completed the feeling changed.
My room ended up being on the other end of the opened up attic.
At the time I was watching a lot of Supernatural- so my spooked ass started putting salt barriers on my bedroom door (which guess what! Yeah! It was one of those attic bedrooms!) and also on my window too. My mom and B would ridicule me for this but I stand by my decisions to this day!
This was mostly because of the feelings you would get in the game room. Even if you were just passing through. There were always eyes on you- especially when your back was turned. I never ever walked through that room without the light on. I didn't even sleep with the light off in my room. When I would I would get really bad sleep paralysis,
One of the worst ones I was laying on my stomach with my head turned to the side. I opened my eyes and I was utterly frozen. At first I know it's just sp, so I try to stay calm and take deep breaths but then I start to feel this pressure starting down on my feet. It feels like two hands grabbing my ankles and pressing down. Then the hands move up my body and then there's more pressure- like someone's whole body is crawled over top of me. It gets closer and closer to my head. All the while I'm trying to scream but I can't open my mouth so it's just coming out as quiet whimpers. I can feel it breathing on my neck and then in my ear. That's when it finally stopped and I jerked up and immediately turned on the light. I remember just crying for a while. At the time B had made it impossible to trust my mom- and they would've just gotten mad at me for waking them up.
There was another night where I had been up late, probably 3 or 4 in the morning and I was drawing or something just sitting on my bed. All of the sudden I hear 4 distinct knocks from INSIDE my closet! No joke I shit bricks. There was no rational explanation. Because there was siding on our house that was damaged and it would make noise but it was always specific like a scraping/tapping. But this was a knock, like someone is at your door with your DoorDash meal type knock. I always tried to rationalize what was happening. Make excuses for the weird stuff.
Then one summer, my cousin had come up from another state to stay with us. We spent a lot of time in my room, just hanging out. One day, we're both up there just chilling when all of the sudden I notice something under my door.
Someone was walking back and forth in front of the bedroom door. You could even hear the floor creaking on the other side. You could see the shadow pass to the right and then to the left. I remember locking my door and calling my mom to see if it was an actual human, nope. She ended up sending B up there (of course this made him mad for some reason) to verify that there was no person up there. Basically they just said we were being kids with overactive imaginations but I can tell you right now there was no rational explanation for that experience.
A lot of the time at that house you could feel constant eyes on you, mostly in the attic. Like always- at all times, someone or something was watching.
There were also times when there was a sort of 'mimic' situation where you could think you heard something upstairs but you really didn't; one time my sister went to pick up our dog- and she thought she heard the dog crying upstairs, she started to go up and get her when her boyfriend who was there at the time stopped her because the dog crate was downstairs in my moms room AND GUESS WHO WAS IN THE CRATE and NOT upstairs.
There was also one time I was babysitting my younger siblings and it was pretty late when I heard giggling upstairs. Thinking it was my brother, I went up to reprimand him and basically tell him to go to sleep but when I entered his room- he was dead asleep. Like fully passed out. I just shut the door and quietly went back downstairs. Nope nope nope.
B ended up doing work out of state- I was like 20 ish and moved back in with my mom and the kids. What was weird that during this time I didn't really have a lot of paranormal experiences. Once or twice you would hear weird things or my cat would get tiffed up staring at blank corners of the room. It was mostly really nice when he wasn't there.
A few years ago we ended up having to leave that house. B as it turns out had gotten himself addicted to meth and also started downloading explicit photos of underage girls (11-13 approx.) I was at the house when the police came and everything. He's still not in jail btw which is such bull. When it first happened, my mom reached out to B's ex wife to talk to her.
Turns out from the moment B and his ex bought this house, she immediately noticed negativity. Weird things and scary things that would happen. We sort of deduced that HE was the one bringing that negative energy into the house, which totally made sense because most of the extreme haunting stuff was happening WHILE HE WAS THERE. So yeah I blame him because he is a disgusting demon himself.

That's a picture from Google because I threw my packaging away before I realized I can't find the brand online. I have their retinol collagen serum (not the same as in the pic) and vitamin c glow cream. I love love love their products but the only place I have ever seen them and also the only place I bought them from was the tkmaxx. yesterday I accidentally broke the cream and tried to find it online but no matter what I searched it didn't come up besides this picture. today I went to tkmaxx and they had some still so I tried to picture search them and got the same result. I would really like to know if there's an online store in case tkmaxx doesn't sell them anymore because I couldn't even find an insta. under this name there's only some travel influencer. the only thing besides the name that I know is that originally the cream is 60€ according to tkmaxx labels. they sell it for 15 but originally this seems to be an expensive brand. so maybe anyone knows them? So I rerolled a lot yesterday, 4 or 5 hours to be exact, for Lynette first of all, followed by accumulating a quick 300 Rubies for the Hopes Guide.
And finally I got one of the more top units - Nephti! At least from her reception on the subreddit, your comments on my previous posts mentioning Nephti and how she ranks up on this list - https://meowdb.com/db/octopath-traveler-cotc/tier-list-by-roles/ - as a solid 10. I think she's pretty handy as a Multi Weapons Weakness plus her Cheer Stacks are interesting.
Okay now for some follow up questions.
For context, I just finished Masters of Wealth so I consider myself to be in the 'Early Game' but it is pretty challenging with my level, setup, skill and tactics. XD
I really hope you don't mind me asking questions or if this isn't the type of thing to post on the subreddit under this flair.
  1. Many of you guys suggested I get my first unit to Lv 71 for better Caits, I've noticed changes already now that I'm at 60+ on Lynette.
But I'm fresh out of Supreme nuts that the Novice Feats gave me... Are there any other sources of EXP / Nuts that I can find to push her a little more in the Early Game? I done the first few Nameless Town Quests but I haven't gotten enough main story progress for the Nut Farms.
  1. Many people mention this games' power creep comes from it's gear and weapons. I've actually noticed it when I'm going into lv 18+ battles with up to lv 60 armors the Novice Feats provided.
But I'm working on getting better weapons relative to my units levels. So if you don't mind me asking, what areas in the 'Master of...' Quests provide materials for higher level gear that my team can use at their levels?
  1. What Skills should I use on Lynette and Nephti? If you can label the skills by their 'name' (like Masterful Cheer 3) along with their function (like saying Buff, or Break Nuke) specifically that be nice please? 😊
  2. On the subject of Skills, Ultimates and Awakenings. Is that something I can get later in game or is it possible to do in the Early Game? I heard Nephti especially benefits from this and most importantly her Ultimate.
  3. Since I won't be pulling with Rubies or Seals anytime soon. What 4*s should I roll with and awaken / get Ultimates if possible. I got a lot of Silver Guidestones so I want to put them to good use.
  4. Now this is just an experience thing coming from Another Eden to Octopath as a whole, but I both love and 'struggle' a bit with combat. Never before had I transitioned from:
"Hey I have some top tier units so I'll Nuke every enemy and boss I find!" since my earliest days in Another Eden (I'm talking having Flammelapis in Main Story Part 1)
to...
"Oh good lord I am a total dummy, spamming every attack finding whatever weakness I find and I run out of SP so fast, THROW Emergency Backline units to the front buy my drained units time to recover! "
Jokes aside I do like this kind of experience and having to use my brain lately in Octopath CotC compared than turning it off with my perfect Power Creeping Nuking teams in Another Eden.
So my overall question is... what's your general battle tips especially surrounding exploiting weaknesses and managing 8 units and managing SP?
I will say, I have discovered this neat trick to Weaknesses thanks to this post - https://www.reddit.com/OctopathCotC/s/oHc8NCWnWY - sharing how weakness are always in that order so if you find one you narrow it down back and forth. But I still haven't really gotten the hang of it.
Again, your help is very much appreciated and don't worry I don't plan on Rushing Things since I do feel like the 'Master of...' series is going to take a while as a whole, especially when I get to Master of All. I tend to do 1 to 2 Chapters a day since I'm occupied with other stuff.

Career Decision Question
I’m wondering which career I should invest in .
My question is “How the path will unfold in each of these career options.?”
Choice A: I’d have to make rational quick decisions , or someone with the king of swords energy will help me navigate through this path. It’s possibly dealing with lots of papers and I’m not sure if hanged man means something I shouldn’t make a move but stay still for now before jumping into something new. It’s giving me a don’t rush and make decision from the heart first and see if I like this career.
Choice B: There is learning that is involved in this career maybe working with others to achieve a goal. Learning the craft and being rational and see how this will affect me long term so I do need to think logically; however, I do see an emotional offer and it tells me like the king of wands and set my sights on a vision.
Choice C: I think this choice tells me that maybe it’s something I’m not totally invested in - sort of bored and sleeping on that decision. Justice tells me whatever I put into the universe I’ll receive back but in the end I’ll end up moving on from this path.
Court cards are confusing 🫤 not sure if it’s me or the energy surrounding the situation but I’m going to say it’s me and what I need more traits of.

  3. Avoid Soil Under Trees: In areas where trees are planted within your field, do not collect soil from beneath the tree canopies. The presence of trees can influence the soil composition, and you want to sample the typical soil in your field.
  4. Mind Sloped and Water-Stagnant Areas: Do not collect soil from areas with a slope or water stagnation in the field. These conditions can lead to variations in soil properties.
Note: Do not collect soil from the field when crops are in the field or in the rainy season.
How to Collect soil sample?
  1. Sample Locations: (a) As shown in the picture, take soil samples from all four corners of the field and from the middle. (b) Ensure the samples are within 5 meters from the edge of the field.
  2. Sample Quantity: Collect 250 grams of soil from each of the five designated locations (four corners and the middle), resulting in a total of 1.25 kg of soil.
  3. Sample Preparation: (a) After collecting the sample, spread it on a flat surface. (b) Use a hammer or stone to grind the soil finely. (c) Remove any crop residues, stones, or glass pieces from the soil to obtain a clean sample.
  4. Divide and Select: (a) Divide the finely ground soil into four equal parts with your hands. (b) Discard two parts, keeping the remaining soil. (c) Repeat this process until you have 250 grams of soil left.
  5. Bag and Label:
– Farmer’s name
– Father’s name
– Date of soil collection
– Survey /Land Number
– Identity card number
– Latitude & Longitude

For this, we take soil samples from all sides of the tree at a distance of 5 feet from the tree. Now we have to follow the rules given above by digging a “V” shaped hole with 0.5 to 0.7 feet at a distance of 5 feet and taking out the soil.

2024.05.14 17:53 Aniform I just want some advice on my choices in terms of candle vessel and wicks and I just need a sanity check.

I'm just struggling to weigh out what would be the best choices for me. My entire brand is sort of a witchy vibe, with candle names that might be like "Mystic Cauldron" or something like that. So, I've taken great care to try and create a theme and choose fragrances that fit. I had planned on my candles being black with a black label with white font. Now, here's where I'm sort of running through it all in my mind. I'm offering a 8oz and 10oz candle and currently the 10oz candle comes with a bamboo lid, which of course adds to the COGS, but where I'm pricing that candle, it works out fine. I'd very much like a lid for the 8oz candles too, but with the lid added to it, suddenly the 8oz is too costly for the customer in my opinion. But, I keep looking at the similar 8oz offering in clear and the price is so ideal that if it were clear, I could get a lid AND still be under the price point I'd like. I just don't know how I feel about my all black label against clear glass. (Obviously that would be white wax and a black label.) And, here's the thing, I keep hearing from people who have yet to see the black candle vessel with the black label, but when I tell people about it, they often say, "black on black? I think it'd be more of a contrast if it were a black label on clear glass." And, that has me second guessing myself as well. I just decided to print up my label and put it on my black glass and I think it looks fine. There's a border around the outside edge and then the text.
Ultimately, my main concern is regarding clear glass. I just don't think the theme works well with clear glass, even though, omg, the price point of clear glass is beyond ideal. But, I look at other folks using amber apothecary jars and while I like those, I feel like they're more common. Even at one of the craft fairs I intend to go to, there's a seller there who is using them. I don't want to have customers see their amber jars and then see me with the same, just a different label. I feel like the black ones set me apart. And considering the witchy themes, black makes sense to me.
The next thing is, the wicks. I love the look of the wood wicks. I think they fit my theme well, they certainly can elevate the look of the candle. But, that said, they are pricier, I mean, I can get the wood wicks from Makesy + shipping = 43c per wick. Versus I buy cotton wicks from CandleScience + shipping = 11c per wick. That brings down my COGS so well. I'm still in testing phases and if you had asked me last night, I'd have said, screw wood wicks, I'll do cotton! But that was because in multiple tests I've had, the wood wicks are so temperamental to get going, if you don't trim just right, it's a pain. It's a pain to get lit, even if you follow best practices. And yet, once it's lit that first time, every time I reignite them, they work beautifully. I just don't know if I'm comfortable selling them when customers may not read directions or care for their wicks. I know prior to getting into candles, when I was just a consumer, I would literally light my candles with no wick trimming, burn them for 10hrs a day, and then light them again without any wick care whatsoever. It seems like a big ask to get customers to care for finicky wood wicks.
Anyway, I just have no one else to bounce things off of and would really like for some opinions.

2024.05.14 17:01 s-atch An Analysis on the Dunmer Experience in Windhelm

Background
The Dunmer population of Windhelm is composed primarily of refugees (or born of refugees) who escaped Vvardenfel’s disastrous living conditions after the eruption of the Red Mountain in 4E 5, known as the Red Year. The migration of most of these refugees likely took place in the years following the disaster. In the roughly 200 years since, they’ve built a sizable community within Windhelm’s ghetto, formerly known as the Snow Quarter. The squalor they live in during the present time (4E 201) is indicative of their long struggle to integrate with the Nord majority. Now, why has there been such a struggle?
According to a variety of non-Dunmer NPC dialogue, the common sentiment is that the Dunmer keep to themselves, they do not try to integrate, they do not work hard, and they do not get involved with the war effort. The in-game book Scourge of the Gray Quarter by Frilgeth Horse-Breaker makes many complaints on the Dunmer’s existence in Windhelm, reiterating such sentiments and claiming they do not contribute to the city. That the book makes reference to Ulfric as jarl, it can be assumed that these are at the very least the sentiments of the present time.
The Struggle
The book notably compares the Dunmer of Windhelm to the Dunmer of Riften, claiming the Dunmer of Riften are able to integrate because they are more hard working and engage in honest labor. In this explanation the writer (quite obviously) shows their bias in they neglect the crucial detail of describing the cities themselves. The people of Riften do not have the same level of xenophobia that those in Windhelm do. They do not have a jarl whose actions encourage the separation of multiple “outsider” groups and Nords. The people of Riften engage with the Dunmer like they would anyone else, contrasted with Windhelm where a Dunmer is more often than not labeled as an “outsider”.
The treatment of Dunmer refugees in Riften also differ in that they were not relegated to a ghetto. This is not to say that Windhelm explicitly forbids Dunmer from buying homes outside of the Gray Quarter (although dialogue of Aval Atheron might suggest so), but rather they are not afforded social mobility as a whole. According to Malthyr Elenil ‘s dialogue, the Quarter “wasn't always so bad”. Judging by the architecture relative to the rest of the city, I’d argue that this Quarter was a slum prior to the Dunmer arrival. In essence, it was a slum before they got there and it remains a slum today (if not worse), but is it the fault of the Dunmer? According to the dialogue of Scouts-Many-Marshes, an Argonian living on the Windhelm docks, it is implied that an Argonian working in Windhelm makes 8 septims per day plus lodging, presumably a tenth the wage of a “proper Nord worker”. Whether or not this “tenth” is an exaggeration or not, Scouts refers to this level of pay as akin to slave labor. Comparing the squalor of the Argonians and the Dunmer, and taking into account the kind of jobs available to them in this city, it can be fairly assumed that the Dunmer do not make much more money than the Argonians when working for the Windhelm Nords. Contrasted again with Riften, where no such race based pay gap seems to exist. How can the Dunmer be expected then, to adequately maintain their neighborhoods on a pay that is a mere fraction of a Nords?
Trying to make a comparison of “work ethic” between the Dunmer of Riften and Windhelm is inherently unfair when you ignore the near diametric social conditions of the two cities. This is also indicative of the Windhelm Nord’s refusal to acknowledge the roots of Dunmer issues. The old jarls of Windhelm may have accepted the refugees, but the Nord citizens have clearly endeavored to keep them at an arm’s length, leading to the segregation of the Windhelm Dunmer we see today.
The “Good Ones” and the Model Minority
Many might look upon Beylyn Hlaalu as proof that any Dunmer can work their way out of poverty. He is the only Dunmer land owner in Windhelm, a proud man who credits his success to his hard work and resents the poorer Dunmer for complaining. But what many fail to consider is that he is a descendent of House Hlaalu, a former Great House of Morrowind. Although House Hlaalu at this point has lost all major political power, they’re still a family of considerable wealth and influence in Raven Rock, albeit under a fake name. I find it rather likely then, in a culture who so values clanship, that Beylyn Hlaalu has had monetary support from his wealthy relatives in order to at the very least kickstart his farm. And although there are no explicit pieces of lore that support this, one must wonder if it is truly coincidence that the shining example of Dunmer success is one born from a not too distantly historically powerful family.
The successes of the Altmer residents in Windhelm are also cited as proof of Dunmer failings. They are Nurelion, Niranye, Ulundil, and his wife Arivanya. Niranye is presumably the newest Altmer migrant to the city, saying she's only just arrived from the Summerset Isles. She is the only one of the Altmer to make references to mistreatment by Nords, claiming that it was difficult at first but she'd eventually proved her usefulness. Clearly she has been able to integrate with Nord society, and once again it is credited as her own hard work. But is that completely true? There are three factors for her ease of integration that are being ignored here: Unlike the Dunmer, the Altmer arrived as business minded merchants and not as refugees, There were already well established and respected Altmer living in the city prior to her arrival, and her business is unfairly propped up by her dealings with crime guilds. Her business directly competes with that of Ravyn Sadri, a Dunmer general goods merchant. By acquiring her goods through her criminal connections and selling at absurdly low prices, she is able to quite easily undercut Ravyn’s business, who operates honestly.
Referencing Scourge of the Gray Quarter again, the writing finishes by claiming that Windhelm Argonians should be the model for Dunmer behavior and acceptance. They write that the Argonian “has learned how to best contribute to their new home…toiling with utmost efficiency and bright smiles”. Once again this text omits crucial details. The Argonians are forbidden, by decree of Ulfric Stormcloak, from entering the city. And make no mistake, this segregation is not because of the racial tensions between Dunmer and Argonian. According to dialogue from Brunwulf Free-Winter it was primarily due to Ulfric’s distrust of foreigners and Nord stubbornness. They are only permitted to reside on the docks and, as stated before, make a mere fraction of the pay of a Nord worker because of the explicit reason of not being a Nord. This is the proposed model for acceptance? Exploitation, racial hierarchy, and wage slavery? Who reads Scourge of the Gray Quarter, looks at the Argonians, and genuinely thinks they’ve successfully integrated?
When holding these so-called examples of Dunmer failures to light, it’s clear to see that they hold little water. The successes of the “good ones” are not wholly the result of pulling themselves up by their bootstraps, but likely by benefitting from pre existing privileges that gave them an advantage over the Dunmer as a whole. And the proposed solution for those without such privileges? Becoming servile and catering to the Nords at the Dunmer’s own expense. In the face of mistreatment and mistrust by the majority group, an administration that refuses to listen to them, racially biased pay gaps, a competition that cheats them, and wage slavery: how rational is it to say all they need to do is “work harder”?
Another Man’s War
A common criticism of the Windhelm Dunmer is that they refuse to join Ulfric Stormcloak’s war effort. Many claim that it is their duty as residents of Windhelm, that they owe a debt to the city for taking them in as refugees 200 years ago. But I ask you this, why should they fight on behalf of a system that harms them? It should first be said that the Stormcloak Rebellion’s primary function is to release Skyrim from the rule of the Empire, so that Skyrim’s people may solely be governed by those who live in Skyrim (Ignoring for a moment that Ulfric’s rebellion was set in motion by the Thalmor to weaken the Empire, according to the Thalmor Dossier). An admirable sentiment, but it has manifested itself as highly xenophobic and oftentimes hostile (most commonly verbally) to those who are not Nords. In the case of the Windhelm Dunmer, it has led to the local Nords being more distrustful than ever before. More dialogue from Brunwulf indicates the escalation of racial tension in the city is primarily the result of Ulfric’s “Skyrim for the Nords” rhetoric. This paired with Ulfric’s complete apathy towards the issues faced by non-Nords in his hold communicates a hatred towards them and systematically harms them.
Many players are under the impression that the Dunmer received free housing and live tax free due to what is written in the Decree of Monument."untithed to any thane or hold, and self-governed, with free worship, with no compensation to Skyrim or the Empire”. I’d argue the text is referring to taxes rather than housing, and no other in-game source makes reference to the housing situation either. But does that mean it is true that the Dunmer don’t pay taxes? One of the outcomes of Revyn Sadri’s quest results in him having to pay “increased taxes” to the city of Windhelm, implying that yes, the Dunmer are currently paying taxes. I do not think it is likely that only Revyn or only some Dunmer are paying taxes. It can be fairly assumed then that at some point between 4E 20 (when the monument was placed) and the present time of 4E 201, the Dunmer were made to pay taxes like any other citizen. As for housing, I find it unlikely the Dunmer received the Gray Quarter for free. As stated earlier, it was likely a slum to begin with, meaning it would’ve been considerably cheap to move in. Perhaps offered to them at a reduced price. It is important to note that the Dunmer being refugees at the beginning does not automatically mean they were penniless upon arrival, likely poor, but it would be unrealistic to assume all of them had nothing at all. Realizing now that the Dunmer of Windhelm are tax paying citizens who are continually ignored and othered by their ruler, it surely must be understandable then why they would refuse to fight on behalf of a system that at this point only takes from them. They owe the Nordic administration no loyalty
Conclusion
With a ruling majority that will more often than not shun, insult, or exploit them, It is no wonder then how the Dunmer of Windhelm as a whole have not been able to integrate, that they “keep to themselves”, that they “don’t contribute to the city”. For how can one integrate with those who refuse to ever fully accept them? If you wonder why they do not leave, with what funds could they start anew? If you wonder why they dont help the Nords in their war, why would they fight for a cause that harms them? The system is as the system does, and that system is racism.

Idk what I wrote all this for lmao. Ive been playing skyrim for over a decade so I guess I thought it would be interesting to engage with the game in another way that's new to me. It was only recently that I got more interested in actually talking to NPCs, learning more about the game world, not just in it for the cool fights and jiggle physics mods (tho i do love em). There's a good degree of guess work here, which I suppose is to be expected with what few pieces that are available we can put together. But I tried to cite as much from official lore as I can. Was def fun trying to take a more nuanced lens to this fantastical game world.

The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is without doubt and still is to this day one of the most influential, powerful, and iconic figures in American history due to his steadfast and nonviolent commitment in the fight for Civil Rights, Equality, and Justice during Jim Crow Segregation in the United States. The highlight of his career as an activist came in 1963 in which he delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech in front of Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. in which he envisioned a nation in which his children will be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. This resulted in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to be passed. Even after his assassination in 1968, his legacy inspired many similar Civil Rights Movements around the world.
Today, Martin Luther King, Jr. is hailed by both sides of the American Political Sphere as a Beacon of Hope on how to fight for Justice and Equality for all during turbulent times. But it's the Conservatives who constantly claim that they truly support him and follow his dream, especially in modern times and they've expressed it in a rather whitewashed and partisan fashion. The most obvious being their use of his "I Have a Dream" speech by quoting the one line that has often been cherry-picked and misinterpreted quite a lot in which they judge people not by skin but by their character. The main reason they do this is to give them the appearance that they are colorblind as their way of opposing racism. And in doing so, they consistently criticize Liberals of trying to divide the country into special interest groups and promote favoritism. As a result, they always claim that Dr. King is a Republican, let alone would've been one in this era given his views, along with the fact that he was a Christian. His niece, Alveda King even emphasized it herself.
Some of the ways that Conservatives try to supposedly live up to Dr. King's "Colorblind" Dream is by opposing supposed "Wokeness", Critical Race Theory, and the practice of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion everywhere. They also express it by opposing Affirmative Action and the use of Racial Quotas when it comes to applying for schools, universities, and jobs because they believe it causes Reverse Discrimination. In terms of nonviolence, Conservatives express their disapproval of the Black Lives Matter movement. On the basis of Christianity, Conservatives believe that Dr. King supported a fixed moral code as indicated in his Letters from Birmingham Jail since he led with love and not racial hatred by changing the lives of people and not the laws itself, along with the notion of self-sufficiency. Seeing all this, it seems like Conservatives are really desperate to prove how much America has progressed in this post-racial world in order to debunk accusations that it isn't a racist country and that's why they always prop up Dr. King by claiming that they follow his dream and will continue to do so. Well.....up until now.
During this year's Martin Luther King Day, a string of prominent Conservative activists and organizations suddenly turned on him. Starting off with Charlie Kirk of the Youth Conservative Movement Turning Point USA, who launched a blistering anti-MLK campaign in which he supposedly dispelled the alleged myths surrounding his popularity. He accused Dr. King of being a "Bad Person" and that his "Sainthood will cause Black voters to realize it's being used against them to suppress the individual." He even went further by stating that "we made a huge mistake when we passed the Civil Rights Act in the 1960s" accusing it as "a way to get rid of the First Amendment". A while ago, the organization marketed the Conservative image of Dr. King when they sold $55 T-Shirts with his name as well as stickers of him with the words "Let Freedom Ring". Kirk was later joined by the Daily Wire's Matt Walsh who accused him of being a "communist". In fact, he railed against Dr. King a few years ago by accusing him of being a Womanizer, Adulterer, Plagiarizer, etc. Coming after Walsh was Human Events editor, conspiracy theorist, and fellow Turning Point USA alumna Jack Posobiec, who labeled Dr. King "a God of the Left" and stating that "the real legacy of the 1960s was enshrining Racial Discrimination and Race Consciousness into the Federal Bureaucracy." And finally, a popular Conservative Twitter account called "EndWokeness" called Dr. King "a Racial Marxist" because he "did not support a Colorblind Meritocracy" after it cited his quote on Wealth Distribution. What's even worse is that even non-White Conservatives hate him. Two examples include a commentator named Vince Everett Ellison and former football player and sports columnist, Jason Whitlock. The latest editions to the lineup of Black Guilt Conservatives, they railed against Dr. King and the passing of the Civil Rights by stating that they worsened the Black community by drifting them away from God into "Democratic Dependency". They even accused him of the same crimes as Walsh did.
With the sudden change in tone and emphasis from the Right against Dr. King, you have to ask yourself why they're doing this and what caused them to believe this way. And this is not an extremist fringe of the Right that some would expect to hear from. All of these are Mainstream Right-Wing Figures who have direct lineage to the GOP, including the current presidential nominee, Donald Trump. That's as Establishment you can get. Their remarks have been criticized by a lot of people from both sides and surprisingly by some Black Conservatives. One of them was Pastor Darrell Scott, a former faith advisor of Trump, who these days, is one of a few Black Conservatives who has been calling out other Black Conservatives for tearing down their own race in order to elevate their status among others, a very notorious habit of them. He criticized Kirk for inspiring a Hitler Youth. Another was Kimberly Klacik, who in 2020, gained viral for her campaign video stating that Black Lives don't matter to Democrats when she was running for Maryland's 7th Congressional District following the death of Civil Rights Leader, Elijah Cummings, who was the incumbent. She criticized Kirk for his remarks stating that his rhetoric will prevent Blacks from voting Republican. Even with that said, there have been instances in which Conservatives themselves have questioned the Civil Rights Act and many of them have been pretty negative. If you check out other Conservative websites and especially here on Reddit, many of their criticisms echo the same sentiments as those Pundits stating that it was unconstitutional and that in infringed on the First Amendment, particularly the Notion of Freedom of Association.
That being said, there is some silver lining to this. Now, that they exposed themselves for what they really of think Dr. King, I think it's time for them to admit that they never really liked him in the first place, let alone understood who he really was and what he really stood for. In fact, they never really liked him at all. All they did was whitewash him and cherry-pick his ideas and speech for own Partisan Agenda. Dr. King constantly talked about the notion of Black Pride and campaigned about the need for Reparations. He also supported Affirmative Action stating in 1965 that "a Society that has done something special against the Negro for hundreds of years must now do something special for the Negro. Dr. King realized that our society was created in a way that managed to disadvantage the many for the benefit the few, and that America's Racial Hierarchy was connected to its Class Hierarchy. He also had political beliefs that manifested through both Racial Reconciliation and Concrete Policy Changes that could help restructure and benefit a divided and unequal nation. This is the reason why he referred to himself as a Democratic Socialist as he wanted a "Radical Redistribution of Economic and Political Power". In fact, he argued that true Equality can only be achieved, not just through legal rights, but through an equal distribution of resources. This is evident when he said “Call it democracy, or call it democratic socialism, but there must be a better distribution of wealth within this country for all God’s children.” This is the exact vision that Vermont Independent Senator Bernie Sanders believed in. After all, he did participate in the March on Washington in 1963. In regards to Police Brutality, while Dr. King opposed violent protest, he did acknowledge that a Riot is the language of the Unheard and that it came from a place of Desperation. In fact, in his "I Have a Dream" Speech, he stated that Blacks could "never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the Victim of the Unspeakable Horrors of Police Brutality." After all, he was hounded by the FBI, was called a Communist, broke the law in protest of race-based Segregation and Violence, was thrown in jail, advocated Protests and Sit-Ins, opposed White Rule of Society, and was assassinated for his Race and his views on Race. Regarding the quote about the Content of Character from said speech, Dr. King's daughter, Bernice King stated that using solely that quote diminishes the purpose of the entire speech because her father's dream and work included "eradicating Racism, not ignoring it."
If anything, this goes to show that is Dr. King were around today, he would be heavily criticized for being Woke, politically correct, a Communist, a Race Hustler, and a member of the Radical Left. And we all know that the Right hates those ideologies passionately. But here's the thing, he never considered himself a Democrat, let alone a Republican. He was an Independent as he felt that both parties are the same. And reducing his legacy to a single quote diminishes the gains that he fought for and believed in. This especially goes to a lot of Conservatives out there who claim to follow his lead using that quote because they interpret them in a way that benefits them today than how he meant them back then. For you to claim that he didn't care about Skin Color is like saying Susan B. Anthony didn't care about Gender. And to those Conservatives who now hate him, including Black, I hope you're OK with people getting treated unfairly, including your own. Who knew being seen as an Equal is a Negative in your eyes.
