How to Collect soil sample?

Soil sample collection:

Accurate soil sampling is crucial for effective agricultural management. When collecting soil samples from your field, it’s essential to follow best practices to ensure the integrity of the data. This guide will take you through the correct procedures for obtaining soil samples, while considering various factors that can impact sample quality.
  1. Avoid Ridge Soil: When collecting soil samples, make sure not to gather soil from the ridge of your field. Ridge soil can differ significantly from the rest of the field, so excluding it ensures a more representative sample.
  2. Stay Clear of Adjacent Fields: Do not take soil from fields adjacent to the ridge. The soil in these areas may also differ from the main field, potentially skewing your results.
  3. Avoid Soil Under Trees: In areas where trees are planted within your field, do not collect soil from beneath the tree canopies. The presence of trees can influence the soil composition, and you want to sample the typical soil in your field.
  4. Mind Sloped and Water-Stagnant Areas: Do not collect soil from areas with a slope or water stagnation in the field. These conditions can lead to variations in soil properties.
Note: Do not collect soil from the field when crops are in the field or in the rainy season.
How to Collect soil sample?
  1. Sample Locations: (a) As shown in the picture, take soil samples from all four corners of the field and from the middle. (b) Ensure the samples are within 5 meters from the edge of the field.
  2. Sample Quantity: Collect 250 grams of soil from each of the five designated locations (four corners and the middle), resulting in a total of 1.25 kg of soil.
  3. Sample Preparation: (a) After collecting the sample, spread it on a flat surface. (b) Use a hammer or stone to grind the soil finely. (c) Remove any crop residues, stones, or glass pieces from the soil to obtain a clean sample.
  4. Divide and Select: (a) Divide the finely ground soil into four equal parts with your hands. (b) Discard two parts, keeping the remaining soil. (c) Repeat this process until you have 250 grams of soil left.
  5. Bag and Label:
– Farmer’s name
– Father’s name
– Date of soil collection
– Survey /Land Number
– Identity card number
– Latitude & Longitude
By following these soil sampling guidelines, you ensure that the samples accurately represent your field’s soil composition, allowing for more effective soil analysis and informed agricultural decisions. Properly labeled and documented samples also enable you to track and reference the data as needed.
Soil sampling near Tree plant:
Sometimes we require soil samples from our plantations like mango, papaya, cashew, betel nut, coconut, etc. Then we need soil sampling technique. For this, we take soil samples from all sides of the tree at a distance of 5 feet from the tree. Now we have to follow the rules given above by digging a “V” shaped hole with 0.5 to 0.7 feet at a distance of 5 feet and taking out the soil.

How to Pick the Right Air Purifier. Things to consider

Consider the Pollutants You Want to Target:

  • Allergens: Look for a purifier with a True HEPA filter, which captures particles as small as 0.3 microns, including dust, pollen, and pet dander.
  • Smoke and odors: Opt for a purifier with an activated carbon filter, which tackles smoke, cooking smells, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
  • Bacteria and viruses: Some purifiers use UV light or plasma ionization to kill airborne pathogens. However, their effectiveness and safety for long-term use are debated. Consider these features supplemental, not a replacement for true HEPA filtration.
Choose the Right Size for Your Space:

  • Air purifier capacity is measured in Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR). Higher CADR indicates faster air cleaning in a larger room.
  • The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) certifies CADR for smoke, dust, and pollen. Look for a CADR rating that covers your room size for the target pollutants.
  • A general rule: Choose a CADR at least 2/3 the square footage of the room. For example, a 300 CADR purifier is suitable for a 150 sq. ft. room.
Think About Noise Level and Energy Efficiency:

  • Air purifiers run continuously, so noise level is important. Look for models with decibel (dB) ratings that suit your preferences. Lower dB indicates quieter operation.
  • Energy Star certified purifiers use less energy, saving you money on electricity bills.
Additional Features to Consider:

  • Replacement filter costs: Factor in the cost and frequency of filter replacements. True HEPA filters typically need replacing every 6-12 months.
  • Smart features: Some purifiers offer Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing control through apps for scheduling, filter monitoring, and air quality checks.
  • Auto mode: This feature automatically adjusts fan speed based on air quality sensor readings.

What are the Benefits of Using Air Purifiers

Breathing clean air is essential for maintaining good health, and air purifiers offer a powerful tool to improve the quality of the air you breathe indoors. Here are some key benefits you can experience by using an air purifier:

  • Improved Respiratory Health: Air purifiers significantly reduce airborne pollutants like dust, pollen, pet dander, and smoke. This can be especially beneficial for people suffering from allergies, asthma, or other respiratory issues. By removing these irritants, air purifiers can ease congestion, coughing, and difficulty breathing, allowing you to breathe easier and experience improved overall respiratory health.
  • Reduced Allergens and Dust: If you struggle with seasonal allergies or dust sensitivity, air purifiers can be a game-changer. HEPA filters effectively capture allergens as small as 0.3 microns, including pollen, dust mites, and pet dander. This can significantly reduce allergy symptoms like itchy eyes, runny nose, and sneezing, leading to a more comfortable and allergy-free living environment.
  • Relief from Pet Dander and Smoke: Pet dander is a common allergen for many people, and air purifiers with HEPA filters can effectively remove it from the air. This can alleviate allergy symptoms triggered by pets and improve overall indoor air quality for pet owners and non-pet owners alike. Additionally, air purifiers with activated carbon filters can help reduce smoke particles and odors, providing relief for those living in areas with wildfires or those exposed to secondhand smoke.
  • Improved Sleep Quality: Clean air plays a vital role in getting a good night's sleep. Allergens and pollutants can disrupt sleep patterns by causing congestion, coughing, and difficulty breathing. Air purifiers can help by removing these irritants, creating a cleaner and more comfortable sleeping environment. This can lead to deeper, more restful sleep, leaving you feeling more energized and refreshed in the morning.
  • Reduced Risk of Airborne Illnesses: While air purifiers cannot eliminate viruses and bacteria entirely, some models with additional features like UV light or plasma ionization may help reduce their spread. Combined with other measures like proper ventilation and hygiene, air purifiers can contribute to a healthier indoor environment by potentially reducing the risk of airborne illnesses.

2024.05.14 18:43 AdInteresting2401 Mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) - Interview with Prof. Dr. Knut Brockow

Mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) is the subject of heated debate. How are mast cell activation syndromes defined? Which diseases are included? What is the diagnosis and treatment of mast cell activation syndrome? Prof. Dr. Knut Brockow, Clinic and Polyclinic for Dermatology and Allergology at the Biederstein, Technical University of Munich answers these questions in an interview with MeinAllergiePortal.
Mast cell activation syndrome: The most important facts!
-The prototype of mast cell activation syndrome is recurrent anaphylaxis
-Other forms of idiopathic mast cell activation syndrome are being sought; however, there are mainly symptom descriptions where the diagnosis cannot be made
-Clinical suspicion of MCAS is based on recurring allergy-like symptoms on the skin, nose, respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract and circulation
-The diagnosis of MCAS is made according to recognized international criteria based on three criteria
-MCAS is often suspected even when symptoms are inappropriate and the diagnosis is unclear; the suspicion is then not helpful for patients
-The same medications are used to treat MCAS as are used to treat allergies, in particular antihistamines and cromoglicic acid
Prof. Brockow, what kind of disease is MCAS?
Mast cell activation syndrome is not an established diagnosis, but rather a concept. Historically, this concept arose because an increasing number of patients came to the doctor's office with complaints that gave the impression of having been triggered by mast cells. These patients sometimes showed symptoms similar to those of allergic reactions, anaphylaxis or mastocytosis, but a clear diagnosis for these diseases could not be made. Nevertheless, it was suspected that there could at least be a connection with mast cell diseases. Unfortunately, the term MCAS created more uncertainty than understanding. This is because MCAS is now thrown around as a diagnosis for many patients with many symptoms and an unclear diagnosis. This is not helpful for patients and fuels short-term hope of diagnosis and cure, which cannot be fulfilled later.
Is MCAS an autoimmune disease?
No, in autoimmune diseases mast cells are not primarily involved and not as lead cells, but lymphocytes that attack the body's own structures, in some cases by forming antibodies.
Is there a connection between mast cell activation syndrome and autoimmune diseases?
No, there is no known connection between MCAS and autoimmune diseases. It has also been claimed by specific authors that other diseases, such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) are related to mast cell activation syndrome. However, there are no good arguments for this. Unfortunately, such claims are easy to make and difficult to refute.
What is the cause of mast cell activation syndrome?
Mast cell activation syndrome is actually more of a symptom description than a diagnosis in its own right. Mast cell activation syndrome is fully applicable to recurrent anaphylaxis (severe allergic reactions in several organ systems such as the skin, respiratory tract, digestive tract and circulatory system), for example due to insect bites. All the criteria for mast cell activation syndrome are met here. Severe allergic reactions are the most common cause of MCAS. However, although the term MCAS is correct in this context, it does not provide any additional information, as patients with such events are better described as patients with a diagnosis of anaphylaxis or allergy, and the term MCAS is somewhat confusing.
Is mast cell activation syndrome genetic?
MCAS itself is not genetic, but patients with the genetic disease mastocytosis often suffer from anaphylaxis, particularly to insect venom, and therefore MCAS. In addition, it is currently being investigated whether people with genetically determined hereditary alpha-tryptasemia suffer more frequently from MCAS.
How did the term mast cell activation syndrome come about?
There were many patients without a clear diagnosis, some of whom predominantly showed the symptoms typical of mast cell diseases. Accordingly, the experts dealing with mast cell diseases saw the need to develop a concept that took into account the “undiagnosable” symptoms of the patients. In the course of this, the terms “mast cell activation” and “mast cell activation syndrome” were defined. In addition, an attempt was made to sort all mast cell diseases into a classification with regard to mast cell activation. However, the difficulty in classifying these complaints is that many of the complaints described by patients are subjective, relatively non-specific and can be both organic and psychosomatic.
How have you defined mast cell diseases and which diseases do they include?
Mast cell diseases are defined as recurring chronic symptoms that are compatible with mast cell activation.
Mast cell activation is classified on the basis of three criteria:
Recurrent typical clinical symptoms in at least two organ systems
An increase in mast cell mediators can be detected in the blood, most frequently by determining the serum tryptase level during an acute attack
Good response of symptoms to anti-mast cell mediator-directed therapy, especially H1 antihistamines
What types of mast cell disease are there?
The classification of mast cell diseases associated with mast cell activation syndromes defines three groups:
1. primary mast cell activation syndrome
Primary mast cell activation syndrome is explained by a clonal expansion of mutated overactive mast cells. It manifests as systemic or cutaneous mastocytosis. If these criteria are not completely fulfilled, but clonal mast cells have been detected, it is referred to as monoclonal mast cell activation syndrome.
2 Secondary mast cell activation syndrome
Secondary mast cell activation syndrome is present when clear triggers of mast cell activation are known. There are established terms for secondary mast cell activation syndrome that we are more familiar with, such as “anaphylaxis” to a known trigger. The classification in the second group of mast cell diseases is therefore merely a reclassification. Examples of mast cell activation are physical urticaria or cold urticaria. Allergies such as pollen allergies are also secondary mast cell activations, as hay fever also causes symptoms typical of mast cell diseases. In pollen allergies, mast cell mediators are found in the blood serum and drugs directed against mast cells have a good effect. If the symptoms recur in several organ systems, this is referred to as mast cell activation syndrome.
3. tertiary or idiopathic mast cell activation syndrome
Tertiary or idiopathic mast cell activation syndrome refers to mast cell diseases whose triggers are unknown. This group would include, for example, chronic spontaneous urticaria, which has additional symptoms in other organs. Here we know that mast cells are activated, but not by what. This group of idiopathic mast cell activation syndromes would also include patients with as yet undescribed clinical pictures who do not fulfill the diagnostic criteria of known mast cell diseases, e.g. allergy, anaphylaxis, but in whom the disease is triggered by mast cells. In these patients, however, the connection between the symptoms and the activities of the mast cells must be proven.
Does this mean that tertiary or idiopathic mast cell activation syndrome is a diagnosis of exclusion?
Idiopathic mast cell activation syndrome can be described as a diagnosis of exclusion insofar as the prerequisite for the diagnosis is that there is no other disease causing the symptoms. However, the symptoms described are often very, very unspecific and could also be caused by a variety of other diseases. However, there are the three criteria for mast cell activation syndrome already mentioned. If these are not all fulfilled, this diagnosis cannot be made.
How common is mast cell activation syndrome?
Anaphylaxis and severe recurrent allergies are not uncommon and represent the vast majority of appropriate cases for MCAS. In addition, mastocytosis patients often have multiple anaphylaxis and therefore also MCAS. However, our initial idea of finding a new disease, idiopathic mast cell activation syndrome, has not yet been confirmed. There are many patients with many symptoms for whom a clear organic diagnosis cannot yet be made. However, it is almost never possible to prove that a defect in the mast cells is primarily responsible for the symptoms. Many of these patients describe symptoms that could fit, and in some patients anti-allergic drugs also have a positive effect. But in only very few patients can an increase in mast cell mediators be detected during an acute attack. I now believe that somatic stress disorders could play a significant role in many of the patients examined.
Histamine intolerance is also a diagnosis of exclusion, is there a connection with mast cell activation syndrome?
Histamine intolerance can cause similar symptoms, but is not a mast cell disorder and has nothing to do with MCAS. When mast cells are activated, the messenger substance histamine is released, which in turn can cause symptoms. In histamine intolerance, the mast cell is not activated - it is not involved in any way. Rather, histamine intolerance describes patients with an increased sensitivity to histamine, which is supplied, for example, via the diet. This can lead to similar symptoms, but in contrast to mast cell activation syndrome, histamine intolerance has a clear trigger, histamine. As a result, the symptoms occur after eating histamine-rich foods, but disappear again if the patient follows a low-histamine diet. A test is also available to diagnose histamine intolerance.
So there are also patients with suspected mast cell activation syndrome who cannot be assigned to a classification group, even though they have corresponding symptoms?
There are many patients in whom no mast cell activation syndrome can be detected despite suspicion. They do not fit into one of the three groups. However, this also used to include monoclonal mast cell activation syndrome. These patients showed anaphylaxis and a KIT mutation, but not the full criteria for mastocytosis. In the meantime, a separate disease diagnosis has been created for these patients. The independent accepted disease of these patients therefore lies between mastocytosis and normal findings.
We thought that there might be other forms of idiopathic MCAS with clinical pictures that have not yet been described. However, this is not supported by the findings to date. There are patients who show symptoms but do not meet the necessary criteria for idiopathic mast cell activation syndrome. In these patients, the diagnosis remains unclear. In how many of these patients functional physical complaints play a role still needs to be investigated.
Are there risk factors that favor mast cell activation syndrome?
There are hardly any recognized studies on this. In a study conducted by Cem Akin in the USA, patients were examined who met the three criteria for idiopathic mast cell activation syndrome. They had the right symptoms, there was an increase in mediators and their symptoms improved with treatment. It was shown that many of these patients suffered from urticaria factitia, a scratch-induced urticaria, abdominal pain and flushing.
Recently, a genetic trait was discovered, hereditary alpha-tryptasemia with elevated basal serum tryptase levels. In patients with this trait and insect venom allergy, the severity of the allergic reaction appears to be increased. It is also discussed that the frequency of mast cell activation syndrome is increased in patients with this genetic trait. However, the published studies are not yet unanimous in this respect.
What symptoms can occur with MCAS?
The following symptoms could be signs of mast cell activation syndrome:
MCAS symptoms on the skin:
Appearance of sudden intense redness (flushing)
itching
wheal formation
Deep wheal formation (angioedema or Quincke's edema)
MCAS symptoms on the nose:
Nasal congestion
Nasal itching
MCAS symptoms in the airways:
Swelling of the upper airways
Wheezing
Shortness of breath
MCAS symptoms of the digestive tract:
Vomiting
abdominal pain
diarrhea
Systemic MCAS symptoms:
Syncope - where you suddenly lose consciousness, but only for a short time
Sudden drop in blood pressure
Allergic shock
These symptoms can occur together or individually. In principle, symptoms must occur in two or more organ systems for MCAS. These symptoms, together with the typical skin changes and anaphylaxis, are also typical of mastocytosis.
Are muscle pain and hair loss also symptoms of MCAS?
No, why would anyone think that these symptoms are primarily caused by a malfunction of mast cells? Mast cells are not important cells for muscle pain and hair loss.
How is MCAS diagnosed?
MCAS is a diagnosis of exclusion, i.e. there is no mast cell activation syndrome test. However, this does not mean that all other diseases must be ruled out before a diagnosis of MCAS can be made.
When testing directly for mast cell activation syndrome, three criteria would be examined, all of which must be met, not just two:
First, there must be a matching of symptoms to see if the above symptoms are leading, recurrent and occur in at least two organ systems.
Is there a substantial or complete improvement in the clinical symptoms when taking anti-allergic medication, antihistamines or cromoglicic acid? Then this criterion would apply.
The blood levels of tryptase in the serum can now be examined at two different points in time. This would check whether there is an increase in mast cell mediators or tryptase in the blood serum in a highly symptomatic phase or during a seizure compared to a time when there are no symptoms.
What does the tryptase level in the blood mean in the diagnosis of mast cell activation syndrome?
If the mast cell mediator tryptase rises by 20 percent of the basal value, i.e. the initial value, + 2 ng/ml during such an episode, the diagnosis of mast cell activation syndrome has been made without the need to rule out other diseases beforehand. However, taking blood samples to determine the tryptase levels is very time-consuming, because a blood sample should be taken in the normal state and then another blood sample should be taken during a seizure or a highly symptomatic episode. This means that the patient must see a doctor in good time for a blood test during the acute phase. If these tests are negative, mast cell activation syndrome cannot be confirmed.
Elevated tryptase levels also play a role in anaphylaxis, is there a connection with mast cell activation syndrome?
Anaphylaxis is an extremely strong mast cell activation, the “prototype” of mast cell activation, so to speak. The tryptase level rises, so that it is considered an indicator of anaphylaxis. Here too, the basal value is measured and compared with the value during an episode. The relevant factor is the resulting increase in the tryptase value. The therapy against mast cells is effective in this case. In this respect, anaphylaxis is the classic form of mast cell activation syndrome.
The tryptase value also plays a role in the diagnosis of mastocytosis, what are the correlations here?
Mastocytosis patients also have an elevated baseline tryptase level. This is therefore an indication of mastocytosis and an indication for a final diagnosis by means of a bone marrow biopsy. However, there is also a mastocytosis-independent correlation between tryptase and anaphylaxis. People who have a higher number of mast cells often develop more severe anaphylaxis than people with fewer mast cells. The tryptase basal value is therefore considered a kind of indicator for the total mast cells in the body. For example, insect venom anaphylactic patients with elevated basal mast cell tryptase levels in the blood are at increased risk of severe anaphylaxis.
What can be done against MCAS and which medications help?
The aim of treatment for mast cell activation syndrome is to slow down the effect of the overactivated mast cells and to calm the mast cells. In particular, the avoidance of allergic triggers is available for this purpose.
Histamine receptor blockers are tried as medication to block the effects of mast cell activation by histamine. Mast cell stabilizers or blockers of mast cell release, cromoglicic acid, can also calm the mast cells. Cromoglicic acid is also used in mastocytosis patients. It is important to know that the use of cromoglicic acid is not advisable if the attack has already run its course. On the other hand, many patients achieve a significant improvement in symptoms if cromoglicic acid is taken continuously as a preventive measure and in a sufficiently high dose. This has also been shown to be the case with antihistamines.
Another option would be leukotriene receptor antagonists and corticosteroids in the short term, but never over a longer period of time.
Unfortunately, many patients with previously unexplained complaints are given a suspected diagnosis of MCAS in the hope that this knowledge will lead to better treatment or perhaps a cure. However, apart from the drugs mentioned, which can also be used on a trial basis in cases of suspected MCAS, there are no other useful drugs available. In this respect, the suspicion of MCAS unfortunately does not offer patients any additional treatment options.
Are there foods that activate or deactivate mast cells?
No such foods are known in humans. Of course, it is possible to bombard mast cells in a test tube with high concentrations of food and measure whether the natural activation of mast cells is increased or reduced. However, such tests are generally not meaningful for humans when consumed.
Can naturopathy help with mast cell activation syndrome?
I don't know how it could help. Naturopathy is the attempt to achieve a positive effect through naturally occurring active substances. Is the avoidance of allergens in our natural environment already naturopathy?
Could certain vitamins, for example vitamin C, be beneficial for MCAS?
This is claimed by a few doctors without any convincing results. Vitamin C is also said to help against seasickness. After all, vitamin C, taken in normal amounts, is not harmful and is beneficial. Sometimes the conviction that a substance is good for you also helps. That's why the experiment doesn't bother me.
Is it possible to prevent mast cell activation syndrome?
Yes, by avoiding MCAS with a known trigger. This is the case with allergies. In the case of allergies and recurrent anaphylaxis as a form of MCAS, omalizumab, an antibody against immunoglobulin E, can also be used in individual patients.
Prof. Brockow, thank you very much for this interview!

I’m in a level of ‘negotiation’ with my Employer (a global Tech company) about a relocation from Southend, SE England to either Alpharetta or Tampa as part of a promotion within my existing Team on what is expected to be a ‘3 year gig’ (at which point the company is expected to be sold which would inevitably see changes of personnel almost certainly those who I am currently ‘negotiating’ with!). Naturally there are a million and one things to consider, especially as a (married) father of two young children.
As I await more formal details of the offer (including the $!), I am trying to speed through all the various research needed which I am simplifying into the below, in order to make negotiations effective and ultimately lead up to a point where I will be able to make an actual decision (likely in the next two weeks)
  1. Understanding the ancillary costs associated with relocating to the US as well as the expected on-going living costs in either location (to also include the likely requirement to relocate BACK in ~3 years time)
  2. Understanding which of the many risks associated with this opportunity I should attempt to have mitigated by my Employer
  3. Understanding any fundamental blockers/showstoppers that could prevent the move from being viable
I’m starting to build up a picture across all three but there were some specific questions I’d really appreciate some insights on. We’re mostly concerned about the number of ‘hidden’ costs there may be, to the extent where the financial gains we are expecting could end up being significantly diminished by the end of the 3 year period (our main objective here is primarily to financial gain – to ideally outright purchase a large family house back in the UK after 3 years and not primarily the ‘experience’ for our family, which we would of course consider a bonus).
·
·
Entirely personal, but also wondering on recommendations for Alpharetta vs Tampa? It would seem cost of living would be comparable (of course, dependent on neighbourhood) with the major differences being probably differences in climate, and I suspect Tampa would be generally much busier, perhaps less safe? For a reasonable 3 bed house it seems around $3K rent per month is the norm, with Alpharetta prices seemingly due to proximity to the tech hubs and Tampa due to the pull of the beaches, climate?
My Wife and I are very excited about the prospect, just trying to be as cautious as possible especially given this will be likely to move quickly!
Many thanks in advance
Mark

the “fun fact” no one needed!!!+ has anyone found travelling (especially on a plane/with a tine change) disrupts your cycle?
I’ve been tracking my cycle using the Stardust app for about 9 months now and I usually start my period within 3 days of when it predicts. I when to Mexico last month (6.5hr plane ride + 2 hour time difference) and was supposed to start my period the day after we flew back (~May 1st). Nothing else has changed in my routine and the app did say in one of these blurbs the other day that travelling does affect your cycle. I’m just curious to know others’ experience with travelling/how it effects your luteal phase/period. I feel like I’m stuck in a luteal purgatory rn and it’s awful lol- like I did NOT need to hear we spend 3500 days of our lives menstruating. also already took a pregnancy test because that factor was driving me mad. TLDR; what’s your experience with travel effecting your cycle? ✈️

Meme Stocks On the Rise - Real Wealth Being Made - Boomer FOMO Inbound
Here's the deal.
There's a lot of chatter about the return of meme stocks and I'm sure you've all seen GME and AMC charts from today. Fucking rockets... but lets talk about meme projects and why I think there is going to be a brand new set of meme millionaires born from the meme action we're seeing today. (I'll save you some time if you don't feel like reading... they'll all be in KENDU).
As you all know, back in the good ol' days of 2021 when we were all face humping masks and rotting in our houses, some real fun was had and a lot of "New Money" millionaires were born. Some of these were from meme stocks, but a lot of people made fat bags on meme projects which they carry with them to this day.
First in Jan/Feb $DOG E pumped. Following this, $SHIB ($KENDU's Chad in Arms) pumped. These projects lost a bit off the top, but have sustained multi-billion dollar market caps to this day. But could they have done it on their own? Was this all just coincidence? Were market conditions so different that these pumps were just a factor of people being stuck at home with nothing better to do than sit there, thumb in ass, trading memes? Science says NAY!!
Please bear in mind that I'm wearing a helmet, which might have restricted some of the blood flow to my brain. This is NFA and you should DYOR... but I'm all in.
To prove my point, I am referencing the paper "The connectedness between meme tokens, meme stocks, and other asset classes: Evidence from a quantile connectedness approach" by Yousaf et al. from 2022. Please note that I only have access to the pre-print, so the peer-reviewed edition might be a little different, but I would muster a guess, not really.
These authors are using data from 2020-2022, which includes data outside of the range of what I would consider the "hard" meme squeeze (Jan. 2021 and the few months following). Given the analysis from this paper was done using data from August 2020 to April 2021, I posit that the conclusions the authors draw, can and will apply to meme events outside of the infamous 2021 meme run which some might say is the primary reason meme projects squoze. The HUGE meme project runs we saw in SHIB and DOG E might have been born of the "Funny Money" era, but lock-down degeneracy isn't the end all when predicting price movements.
The meat
"Why, Butt?" I hear you ask. "Why do you bring this paper up?". Surely it can't be because you wanted to "prove" that meme projects can run outside of the golden age of meme pumps? Well dear Redditor... yes and no. I bring it up also because of the interesting point it mentions about how predictive certain market events are for similar market events in other assets.
To do this, the authors use Quantile Connectedness (QC) to analyze Meme stocks, Meme projects, and some more traditional asset classes like USD, Treasuries and Gold. QC is a concept used in economics to measure the degree of interdependence (how connected things are) among different segments of financial markets. The method uses some fancy stats and math to do so, and the analysis done in this paper says some interesting things about the interplay between traditional assets, meme assets and meme pumps (summarized in the following screen grab).
Memes go brrrrrr... other things do too
Yousaf, 2022 - The connectedness between meme tokens, meme stocks, and other asset classes: Evidence from a quantile connectedness approach.
So... market events in the upper extreme quantile (or in laymen terms, extreme upwards market movements) in meme assets tend to cause spillover events into both meme assets and traditional financial assets. That's interesting... You know what we saw today? An extreme upward market movement. Specifically GME and AMC, which are both up over 100% (in after hours) from previous close.
Second, and perhaps more of a bull case for me... the spillover events are even more well predicted by movement in meme stocks than they are by movement in BTC (please see the useful red circle in the screen-grab below). Higher number = better prediction of spillover event. So, SO often, I hear people predicting runs in the smaller meme projects based strictly on what BTC is expected to do. But it turns out, there's an even better predictor!!! Meme stocks!
Please also note: The authors state "All meme assets are highly positively skewed, which reflects their price surges during short squeezing periods." Pretty sure this means, green begets more green for these spillover events.
The spillover effects from extreme moves in GME, AMC, and BTC as they relate to DOG E and SHIB.
The spillover effects from extreme moves in GME, AMC, and BTC as they relate to DOG E and SHIB
All this brings me to my last point. What does this all mean for meme projects and for $KENDU?
I hear you thinking "Why not just choose SHIB or DOG E, Butt?" and I get it... safe bets that will for sure "moon". Yes... "moon" :eye roll:
These projects are fine and good if you want to just grow the bags you've been holding and just keep, HODLing... but I know the real reason you all are playing meme projects, and it's that sweet, sweet alpha. You don't want to see the 2x, or 3x that these bigger memes might fetch during the next run. You're looking to eat zeros... and the only way to do that is to get in early with a project that is going to FUCKING RUN!
Enter KENDU INU... it's the project that "Can do"
Arguably, the most important fundamental for a meme project is the hype that it generates and how infectious its energy is. Well, you're not going to find a more hype community with a more infectious can do attitude than the KENDU community. The TG is wild, memes are on point, new art being made ALL THE TIME, and so much love and support for every single member in the Kendu clan.
Ignoring the fluffy feel good stuff though (NO DON'T DO THAT), what does this project really have going for it. I'm glad you asked.
  • We have strong support in the 40M range right now and are primed to run.
  • There are ABSOLUTELY (and we mean stay TF away if your looking to trade capital for services) no paid shills. Everyone is working hard to get this to project1BN+ and to get there organically! We know we can do it!
  • Shytoshi Kusama (the project lead for SHIB) has been following the project since 300 xitter followers. Shytoshi has also joined our Telegram community and said that he wants to feature KENDU in Shib Magazine (Look for the screen grabs in the comments).
  • The mega-chad developer, Kendu Miyazaki, has run multiple projects to 100M+ and is an incredibly active part of the community.
  • Kendu recently been listed on some BIG crypto tracking platforms like CMC.
  • 3 top 10 exchanges are lined up to launch KENDU when the time is right. One of these exchanges is a top 5 CEX !!!
  • The community! The community! The community!! (One more time for those who didn't hear: The Community!). This community is unhinged in the best way. So many people dedicated to the success of the and project to keeping positive vibes going ALL THE TIME in the Telegram.
  • What more sorta hype could you ask for!!
I will leave you with this. Dump those trash projects, put your M-Effin helmet on, and join the KENDU Clan!
Screw these JEET ass meme projects. KENDU is the only play
TLDR:
  1. Huge meme alpha was not strictly generated from pandemic lock-down funny money degeneracy.
  2. The GME and AMC pumps we saw today are a good predictor for what's to come with meme projects.
  3. You want alpha and to add to zeros to your portfolio. Bigger projects WILL NOT do that as well for you.
  4. Those other meme projects don't hold a candle to the dedication and spirit that all my fellow KENDU Chad's have!
  5. IT'S STILL FUCKING EARLY!!!
TLDR the TLDR: Meme projects are going to run and $KENDU is going to own the day!

2024.05.14 18:12 Flametang451 The Primordial Paradox, Religious Diversity, and Free Will

In the modern age, I think one of the biggest questions anybody has had to deal with in a increasingly interconnected world from a religious perspective is the nature of how religious diversity came to be- not just internally, but externally.
The quran seems to at times explain religious diversity as a natural consequence and even ordainment upon humanity (5:48 and 10:99 come to mind here- if both are linked with each other than such would mean that some nations are meant to be as they are- even if they are what we would categorize as non monothiestic.
Quranically, such a nation could be seen potentially in Surah Yusuf. Egypt in this time is clearly implied to be pagan with Yusuf's conversation with his cellmates (12:36-42), and again in how the king's laws were different from Yusuf's (12:76). Yet the people in this verse seem to almost solely call on Allah only (when the egyptians speak of divinity, the word lilahi is used in places such as 12:31 and 12:51). If we assume the Wife of Al Aziz (Zuleikha as she is spoken of in exegesis, but also Rael) is speaking in 12:53, she does the same. In contrast, Egypt in the time of Musa amongst those who followed the Pharaoh mention waālihataka in the context of divnity- translated to multiple gods by most*).*
This could be a henotheistic situation like with the Quraish, but Prophet Yusuf aside from the prison does not do much preaching. There is a mention in Surah Ghafir (40:34) that Yusuf was rejected by the folk of Egypt, but this opens up more questions than answers (Egypt was not destroyed in Yusuf's time nor punished, nor does the quran call it's folk of that time disbelivers or mushrikeen....despite clearly being pagan. Neither does god state at any point that Yusuf was ordained to preach in Egypt. Yusuf likely was in Egypt during the Second Intermediate or Middle Kingdom Periods based on the ruler being referred to as a king if we attempt a historical contextualization, which were both dominated by pagan orthodoxy in the country.
Any criticisms on religion come from people that god narrates speaking, but not god themselves. It seems a small, but significant difference in comparison to how other nations in the quran are spoken of. 40:35 seems to continue on from this- but this verse may be unrelated to the matter (it also seems to be essentially be an allusion to cult like practices- the verse itself reads in what appears to be an orwellian matter in that folk should not question revelation at no point ever- it seems to follow in the maxim of such- "blessed are the minds who do not doubt, and cursed are those who do". Thus, it likely can and has been used to justify corrupt religious orthodoxies and institutions by silencing concerns of the layfolk, by arguing people do not have authority to question scripture or what it means. Essentially, it isn't blind following in all cases that the quran dislikes, but blind following of the right path is fine (and what "right" is can thus be made subjective to satisfy end goals). At the very least, from this verse solely. This would also likely be a favorite verse of those looking to justify spiritual abuse under the guise of well intentions.)
but at other times sems to argue that humans at some point recognized god for what they are, and that they chose to accept some kind of trust which seems to be in relation to living as humans, almost subliminally arguing that all people are somehow secretly aware of allah. Yet the quran also mentions that many folk can also be unaware or not know of god, that cities were not punished because they did know of a matter- that is the whole point of sending messengers. This in itself is an established point in jurispedence.
The verses that seem to indicate this are 7:172 and in 33:72. 33:72 seems to indicate man was very hasty in taking on said trust, to an almost shortsighted degree. However, 7:172 essentially opens up a serious question about personhood.
The claim that all folk somehow were brought forth in a primordial state to testify to god is a quran only claim- it is not as if we can go and ask somebody this happened. More importantly, considering that the quran directly shows evidence of god's interference with human consciousness by sealing hearts and ordaining paths or belief systems upon nations, we would not be able to gain a verifiable answer anyway. Since ideologies and understandings of the world are what influence actions (not the other way around, as a choice taken is always made in due part due to the convictions of a person), then it stands to reason that god sets both the cause and effect.
This would also justify fatalism (I've seen some try to argue for qadr allowing free will, but most arguments seem to be that there is a script but you can influence it a tad....which means we are mostly still bound by outside forces. The quran is even more confusing on this matter- at times it argues god is the only reason people believe or not, yet when the quraishi pagans use this very argument, they are accused of being decietful. The quran seems to want to uphold god's omnipotence and free will, and yet since the two will clash, seems to bungle both. The fact that the quran implies god created men to be upon the earth also seem to imply that humanity's acceptance of this trust and the expulsion of adam and hawwa seems to imply either events may not have been entirely free will oriented, but rather parts in a script that were unalterable (the fact that shaytan somehow managed to slink his way into heavean even after being banished seems to suggest that). Puppets on a stage, if you will, with long enough string that it looks like they have free will.
As for the issue of the primordial, what makes this so confusing is that it seems something from before birth (the opening of the book of deeds), is being taken into account in judgment. Generally, life is assumed to have begun at birth, not before.
The only way I could see this working is one of 3 methods- 1) mass mind wipes, 2) dharmic-style reincarnation, 3) ship of Theseus.
If we assume mass wind wipes were done prior to birth, then one should wonder why a person with no memories is being beholden to somebody who had said memories. Would the latter have done the same as the former? If we look at today, most wouldn't take up something so high stakes (existing as a human). Anti-natalism is a philosophical current in the modern day for a reason.
If we assume dharmic style reincarnation (the prototype souls were all regressed from being sapient to being infants), then essentially a lesser form of death has been experienced (the former cannot be seen as fully equivilent to the latter, and it cannot be possible to state either state would do the same actions in taking up the trust).
If we assume a ship of Theseus situation- god replaced each component of the old proto-souls with something new then but kept the same form- are those the same person as before? Is the delineation point form over substance? It doesn't seem like they are.
The only way that I could see this working is that the recognition of god is merely a recognition of the absolute in some form. How that happens in the living world is wildly dependent on various factors as enshrined by god or human actions. What may appear to be non belief in god may be in a sense, belief in some of his attributes. This is a mostly akbarian approach from what I can tell (though islam as a whole would be the most ideal path to take, it does not negate or subsume the others), but it seems to help avoid issues of mass damnation of humanity, and overall uphold god's mercy and salvation for other peoples.
Though one can argue since the quran mentions hell will be filled up, with all the nature of people being chosen to be guided or not, it could very well be the quran is arguing to a Calvinist style elect which would be seriously grim). Sometimes I wonder if in reading the quran pessimistically, is that perhaps how we should read it? It would lend itself to a more misotheistic understanding of god (as being evil or useless, but since the abrahamic god is all powerful, the former is the only possible approach in such a thought cycle- all actions would need to be reanalyzed as being conducive to some malevolent end.).
Of course, such a being would need to be rejected- if such a being would truly exist, and god was truly that- the only worship they deserve is to have their worship thrown into a fire and burned to never rise again. Essentially, allowing for the trust to be accepted by humanity was but the beginning of a series of malevolent machinations. To what end would be unknowable, but nothing good in general. It would be the inverse of the muslim thought process which argues even if we do not know something's occurence, there may be good in it. I'm not sure if this would be pessimism or simply being realistic or optimism vs cynicism sometimes between the two approaches.
Some would likely call such a view bizarre, but others would likely call it liberation from oppression, the only logical way to see faith, and an end to the evils of faith. I do wonder sometimes....in the modern day, the very concept of god by some is seen as having been the source of all, or perhaps most, evils. Granted, governments that espoused atheism were hardly better, but one could easily argue they made a cult out of their leaders, and thus see that as some kind of faith and condemn that.
If a prophet were to be sent down today, they wouldn't be dealing with people who would see miracles and scoff at them being of demonic origin, they would argue that and that even if they were from god, there's no guarantee god is good, citing history as their defense, or analogies to god as being an abuser, or that faith in anything at all in a religious context is a harmful thing. I wonder sometimes how a prophet of the past would react to that sentiment. It's not as if people are worshipping themselves, and even if they did try that argument of being beholden to one's desires- people would probably argue back that such an argument usually is used to justify abuse of people by depriving them of freedoms and safety, citing examples to do so. Or perhaps arguing in that god's mercy always comes with a price, or maybe by arguing heaven and hell both are eldritch hellscapes that lead to loss of self and existential horrors, or that faith in itself demands orwellian adherence and mindless obedience in one way or another- thus, corruption in religious institutions and the stifling of free thought isn't a bug, but a feature of faith. Granted, I'm sure all of these could be argued against in one way or another.
Ultimately, I think overall, god must be seen as being of mercy firstly. Otherwise, if this is overpowered at all times by other attributes, we wind up with all kinds of uneasy implications.

2024.05.14 17:26 AlbiCoins Why the key to the productive work is trust?

Do you really trust your colleagues? Let’s discuss why its critically important for success of your business. Recent years have been abundant with misery and anguish. From the pandemic to political conflicts and war, economic struggles and ecological crises. It gave birth to a generation of anxiety and uncertainty. As observed, global progress is pushing us in divergent directions, emphasizing the significance of selecting the right voices to shape discussions about the future.
Our efforts to establish digital HR-services pave the way for a corporate enhanced cooperation. We can find there is still ample room for improvement in fostering trust, r and strengthening people's sense of security.
According to the Edelman “Trust Barometer1 (a survey of 33,000 people in 28 countries), one in three people doesn’t trust their employer. The lack of trust leads to poor communication. Poor communication leads to difficulties with problem-solving. An unfavorable work atmosphere breeds immense stress and an unappealing environment for all individuals involved. In such organizations, employees suppress their talents, creativity, energy, and passion, leading to a decline in productivity, innovation potential, competitive advantage, and numerous other drawbacks.
The level of trust within a workplace significantly influences the collaboration and synergy among employees working on a shared project. Nowadays, with a majority of employees working remotely or in hybrid setups, employers have recognized the crucial significance of establishing trust. In many instances, inadequate employee communication stands out as the primary cause for subpar collaboration. The initial stride towards fostering trustworthy and collaborative work environments involves promoting transparent and sincere communication within the workplace.

So, how can we build trust in a workplace?

It might be worth a while to start with an atmosphere in the company.

Certain individuals may favor a farm near a major city for convenient access to markets and amenities, while others may prioritize a more secluded setting for privacy and tranquil living. Reflection upon your priorities and the sort of farming you intend to pursue when assessing location alternatives is prudent. Moreover, deliberate on the climate of the region and its impact on the kind of crops or animals you can cultivate. Varying regions exhibit distinct growing seasons and weather patterns, which can influence your farming pursuits. Ensuring to inspect the climate of the area and determining its compatibility with your farming objectives is essential.Extent of the FarmlandThe expanse of the farm is another crucial factor to weigh when seeking out hobby farmlands for sale. The extent of the farm will hinge on your farming aspirations, accessible resources, and level of dedication. If you aim to commence on a small scale and gradually delve into farming, a petite farm might be the preferable option. Conversely, if you possess extensive agricultural expertise and ambitious farming designs, a more sizable farm might be more fitting. While contemplating the extent of the farm, also factor in the available infrastructure and resources. Larger farms might necessitate more equipment, labor, and financial investment, therefore it’s important to be realistic regarding what you can handle.Soil ExcellenceThe quality of the soil on the potential hobby farm is a pivotal aspect to consider. The fertility of the soil will directly impact the triumph of your farming endeavors. Before procuring a hobby farm, conducting a soil test to assess its pH levels, nutrient content, and overall quality is imperative. This will enable you to comprehend the soil’s potential for cultivating crops and nurturing livestock. In addition to the soil quality, take into account the land’s topography and drainage. Farms with effective drainage and proper topography are less susceptible to flooding and erosion, rendering them more suitable for farming. Factor in the slope of the land, the presence of wetlands or floodplains, and any potential water issues.Water SupplyAccess to a dependable water supply is indispensable for any hobby farm. When searching for a farm, contemplate the availability of water for irrigation, livestock, and household use. Farms with natural water sources such as rivers, ponds, or springs can be beneficial, as they deliver a readily available supply of water for farming activities. If the farm lacks a natural water source, explore the options for installing a well or accessing a municipal water supply. Bear in mind that establishing a water supply can be a significant expense, so integrate this into your decision-making process.Zoning RegulationsPrior to finalizing a purchase, comprehending the zoning regulations and land use stipulations pertinent to the hobby farm is crucial. Zoning regulations can influence the kind of farming activities permitted, the construction of buildings and structures, and the potential for future development. Familiarizing yourself with the local zoning laws and regulations is essential to ensure the farm aligns with your farming plans. Also deliberate on any conservation easements or land use constraints that might impact how the land can be utilized. Certain farms may be subject to limitations on timber harvesting, hunting, or other activities, therefore it’s essential to investigate any potential constraints.InfrastructureThe current infrastructure on the hobby farm is another fundamental consideration when shopping for a property. Evaluate the state of any buildings, barns, fences, and other structures on the farm. Ascertain if the existing infrastructure fulfills your requirements or if it will demand substantial refurbishments or repairs. If you intend to rear livestock, consider the accessibility of animal housing, fencing, and pastureland. For crop farming, evaluate the state of any existing greenhouses, storage facilities, and irrigation systems. Upgrading or establishing new infrastructure can amount to a significant expense, so it’s important to integrate these costs into your budget.Local Community and AmenitiesUltimately, take into account the local community and amenities when exploring hobby farmlands for sale in your vicinity. Reflect upon the proximity to schools, grocery stores, healthcare facilities, and other essential services. Additionally, assess the availability of local markets, agricultural associations, and farming resources in the area. A supportive and thriving farming community can make a substantial difference in your farming experience. To conclude, perusing hobby farmlands for sale nearby necessitates thoughtful consideration of various factors. From the location and extent of the farm to the soil quality, water supply, zoning regulations, and infrastructure, multiple aspects need to be evaluated before making a purchase. By carrying out comprehensive research and due diligence, you can find the ideal hobby farm that resonates with your farming objectives and lifestyle aspirations. With the right farmland, you can embark on an exciting and gratifying journey into sustainable living and agricultural pursuits.

The Comprehensive Guide to the Cost of Installing Waterproof Laminate Flooring
https://preview.redd.it/14yz5e06te0d1.jpg?width=764&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a18e9fdab90ca33bffcfb27748b681847efc76ce
In recent years, waterproof laminate flooring has emerged as a popular choice for homeowners seeking durable, aesthetically pleasing, and moisture-resistant flooring solutions. As an alternative to traditional hardwood or vinyl flooring, waterproof laminate offers the perfect balance of style, functionality, and affordability. However, like any home improvement project, the cost of installing waterproof laminate flooring can vary depending on various factors. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the different elements that contribute to the overall cost, helping you make informed decisions and budget effectively for your flooring project.
Understanding Waterproof Laminate Flooring: Before diving into the cost considerations, it's essential to understand what waterproof laminate flooring is and how it differs from other flooring options. Waterproof laminate flooring is composed of multiple layers, including a moisture-resistant core, a decorative layer, and a protective top layer. Unlike traditional laminate flooring, which can swell or warp when exposed to moisture, waterproof laminate is engineered to withstand water damage, making it ideal for areas prone to spills, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and basements.
Factors Influencing the Cost: Several factors influence the cost of installing waterproof laminate flooring. By considering these factors, homeowners can better estimate their total expenses and plan their budget accordingly.
  1. Material Cost: The cost of waterproof laminate flooring varies depending on the quality, brand, and design. Higher-end products with advanced waterproofing technology and realistic wood or stone textures may come at a premium price compared to basic options. Additionally, the quantity of flooring needed to cover the designated area will impact the material cost.
  2. Installation Method: The method of installation plays a significant role in determining the overall cost. Homeowners can choose between DIY installation and hiring professional installers. While DIY installation may seem cost-effective initially, it requires time, effort, and skill. Professional installation ensures proper fitting, minimizing the risk of mistakes and potential damage to the flooring. The cost of professional installation typically includes labor charges per square foot or per hour, in addition to any preparatory work required, such as subfloor leveling or moisture barrier installation.
  3. Subfloor Condition: The condition of the subfloor directly affects the installation process and cost. A level and structurally sound subfloor provide a stable foundation for the laminate flooring, facilitating smooth installation and optimal performance. However, if the subfloor is uneven, damaged, or moisture-prone, additional preparation may be necessary, such as repairing cracks, removing old flooring, or installing a moisture barrier. These preparatory steps can add to the overall cost of the project.
  4. Room Size and Layout: The size and layout of the room where the laminate flooring will be installed influence the total cost. Larger rooms require more flooring material and labor, thus increasing the overall expense. Moreover, complex layouts with irregular shapes, angles, or obstacles may pose challenges during installation, potentially requiring more time and expertise from installers.
  5. Underlayment: Underlayment is an essential component of laminate flooring installation, providing cushioning, sound absorption, and moisture protection. While some waterproof laminate products come with an attached underlayment, others require a separate underlayment layer to be installed beneath the flooring planks. The cost of underlayment varies depending on the material type, thickness, and quality.
  6. Additional Materials and Accessories: In addition to the flooring and underlayment, other materials and accessories may be needed to complete the installation process. These include transition strips, molding, adhesive, and moisture barriers. The cost of these additional materials should be factored into the overall budget to ensure a seamless and professional finish.
  7. Location and Accessibility: The geographical location of the property can impact the cost of installing waterproof laminate flooring. Prices for materials and labor may vary depending on regional factors, market demand, and local building codes. Additionally, accessibility to the installation site, such as high-rise buildings or remote locations, may affect transportation costs and logistical challenges, potentially increasing the overall expenses.
Calculating the Total Cost: To estimate the total cost of installing waterproof laminate flooring, homeowners can follow these steps:
  1. Measure the Area: Accurately measure the dimensions of the room(s) where the flooring will be installed to determine the total square footage.
  2. Choose the Flooring: Select the desired waterproof laminate flooring product based on quality, design, and budget considerations. Calculate the total quantity needed based on the square footage of the area.
  3. Consider Installation Method: Decide whether to opt for DIY installation or hire professional installers. Obtain quotes from reputable flooring contractors to compare prices and services.
  4. Assess Subfloor Condition: Inspect the subfloor for any issues that may require repair or preparation. Budget for any additional costs associated with subfloor leveling, moisture mitigation, or removal of existing flooring.
  5. Factor in Underlayment and Accessories: Determine the type and quantity of underlayment required, as well as any additional materials and accessories needed for installation. Include these costs in the overall budget.
  6. Obtain Quotes: Request quotes from suppliers for the chosen flooring material, underlayment, and accessories. If hiring professionals, obtain multiple quotes from licensed contractors to ensure competitive pricing.
  7. Budget for Contingencies: It's wise to set aside a contingency fund to account for unexpected expenses or unforeseen challenges that may arise during the installation process.
By following these steps and considering the various cost factors involved, homeowners can develop a realistic budget for their waterproof laminate flooring project.
Conclusion: Installing waterproof laminate flooring is a cost-effective way to enhance the beauty and functionality of your home while providing long-lasting durability and moisture resistance. By understanding the factors that influence the cost of installation, homeowners can make informed decisions, budget effectively, and achieve stunning results within their desired price range. Whether embarking on a DIY project or seeking professional assistance, careful planning and attention to detail are essential for a successful flooring installation that enhances the value and comfort of your living space.

2024.05.14 17:16 AmericanCitizen41 What Are Your Thoughts On Stephen King's Criticisms of "The Shining"?

It is no secret that Stephen King hates Kubrick's version of "The Shining." His main criticisms are that Jack Torrance is not the tragic character he is in the book, someone who goes from being a good man to an evil man who is corrupted by the Overlook (but finds redemption at the last minute). King has complained that Jack Nicholson's portrayal of Torrance shows him to be evil from the beginning of the film, whereas in his book he envisioned Jack as being more "normal" before moving into the Overlook. King also argues that Shelley Duvall's portrayal of Wendy Torrance is too passive, compared to the stronger and more assertive character he envisioned in the book. He also has argued that Kubrick's adaptation, and Kubrick's filmography in general, are "cold" and cynical while King views himself as a "warm" author.
I have seen Kubrick's adaptation of The Shining many times and I read part of King's book but I did not finish it because I did not enjoy reading it. Stephen King is a genius and I don't dispute the influence he has had either on fellow authors or on pop culture in general, but I disagree with his criticisms of Kubrick's films for the following reasons. Firstly, when I read the novel of The Shining I remember really disliking Jack Torrance when we are first introduced to him. He came across as mean, selfish, and arrogant - the kind of person who you could easily predict to become the villain in a horror novel. By comparison, I argue that Nicholson portrays Jack as a fairly normal and balanced person in the movie's opening scenes but he also conveys Jack's slow descent into madness in a way that is very effective.
One could argue that Jack's last minute redemption in the novel is more complex and nuanced than Kubrick's adaptation, but I argue that the choices which Kubrick made with the character were more appropriate for a film adaptation. Once you visually depict a father trying to murder his wife and child, it is much more difficult to get an audience emotionally invested in that character's redemption compared to a novel. In a novel, that content isn't depicted visually and the author can explain the plot in greater detail than what can be conveyed to the audience in a visual medium. I think if Kubrick had shown Jack's "redemption," it would have been difficult for the audience to accept and it would have undermined the dramatic tension of the movie's third act. I also think Kubrick may have been trying to say something profound about human nature by making this change. In both the novel and the film, Jack violently abuses Danny prior to the events of the main plot. Perhaps Kubrick felt that a father who would do this to their child was never a "good man" to begin with, and that Jack's violent actions resulted from something corrupt within his own soul. In the film, I like how Kubrick blurs the line between the influence of the Overlook and the influence of Jack's own faults so that his actions could be ascribed to a combination of both factors. So Kubrick's choices for the character work better for the movie, although I understand King's disappointment with those choices.
As far as Duvall's portrayal of Wendy, I think Duvall gave the performance of a lifetime. I won't go into too much detail here on a public internet post, but as someone who personally knows multiple people who were in abusive marriages I have always found Duvall's performance to be a realistic portrayal of a woman in an abusive relationship - not a dumb or weak portrayal which King has omplained about. I also love the scene where Duvall attacks Nicholson on the staircase with the bat, you could hardly say that Duvall wasn't being strong or assertive either in that scene or in later sequences.
Finally, although I respect King as an author I would hardly call his books "warm" even in comparison to Kubrick's films. Stephen King is one of the most violent authors in the English language. He has frequently depicted unspeakable acts of horror and cruelty especially towards children. (Look no further than "It," which has some of the most disturbing content I have encountered in a book). Therefore I just don't agree with him when he holds himself up as this "warm" people person in contrast to the "cold," cynical Kubrick - whose movies look like Disney movies compared to many of King's novels.

2024.05.14 17:10 revolution_twelve I am the product of my mother's confidence birthing me would end the cycle of trauma. 31 years later, and I want to die. Don't make the mistake of thinking being a good parent is enough.

I had a good mom, a single parent who sacrificed much for me to give me a childhood full of positive memories. Even though I was raised as an only child in a single-parent household, outside of what I guess is a normal amount of frustration that comes from homework and school bullies...it was fine. My childhood was fine. I felt loved. My home was safe.
My mother died 16 years ago, almost to the day. In a twist of sardonic fate, it was on mother's day, that year that she passed. And it was there that my CPTSD began, at fifteen years old, with the series of family members and family "friends" that I ran away from home from or escaped to. Emotionally abusive, manipulative, truly unempathetic wastes of flesh that opened my eyes to nothing besides that the world is a vast, venomous pit full of snakes and liars.
I posted two years ago about wanting to die, and the comments here encouraged me to keep going. I pressed on, spent even more money, but finally found myself in a situation that was better than I could have dreamed, and started to heal. A whole year I got, having peace, feeling creative again, making small progress on my health, having hope.
A month and a half ago it all went to shit in a way so specific to me and my struggles that it feels as though some unseen entity is stalking me, ensuring that I suffer just enough to continuously generate it despair to feed off of. I guess hope just exists only to make the pain that much harder when it vanishes. At this point I no longer believe it is possible for me to keep trying to find what I need, and I'm done. I'm sick of trying, sick of being ill. I can't keep pushing myself, I can't keep allowing myself to hope just to get disappointed, to put faith in a universe that clearly has it out for me to only torture me, to prevent me from stabilizing my life and moving forward on all of the hopes and dreams I've carried and sat on in the hopes I could survive long enough to bring them to fruition one day.
I'm so, so tired. I have given life almost everything I can think of. There are still technically options, but I don't have the inner resources to access them. I simply cannot. I don't want to do this anymore. Even a cancer diagnosis would have been easier. Sadly, I'm being evaluated for that, too.
I'm writing a fanfiction with a friend, promised her I'd finished it, but I'm hanging on by a thread. A human can only go for so long, can only try so much before they just throw up their hands and give up.
I see so many people on here convinced that they won't pass their trauma on to their children. That they will do the work, that they won't abuse them, that they will make sure they are loved. And that's a laudable goal. My mother was raped, emotionally abused my her own mom as a child, beaten by previous partners, and despite all this, I know she loved me, and I appreciate her. It did not negatively effect her parenting me.
But she wasn't the only human in my world. And even if I had no other caregiver, even if my environment had been supportive despite her death, anything can cause CPTSD. Not just a parent's lack of love. Siblings. Abusive partners. Cruel bosses at work. School bullies. Displacement. Being perpetually poor. Spending decades lost in chronic illness.
This might be controversial, but I have to say my truth.
Being a good parent is not enough to stop your child's suffering. And when you bring them here, in the this world of endless madness and unequally distributed trauma, remember that that's what you risk. Their pain, their misery, their anguish, their desire to die, and even, eventually, their very death, caused by factors entirely out of your control. Do not bring a child here unless you are sure you can live with this reality. Do not bring a child here if you are not prepared to feel guilty.
This isn't a suicide note. But in three months when my friend and I finish this fic, I can't say with confidence that that will any longer be true. I read u/f1nal-exit's post. And then I took a break, waited a few days, and read the comments. And it became clear to me then, that the people who care can't help me, and the people who could help me don't care.
My mother birthing me was the cruelest mistake of her life. I wonder how she would feel now, knowing the daughter she birthed no longer has desire for little more than to die.

2024.05.14 16:26 Sufficientlyfun The Kibbe approach to Personal Color: A Crash Course

One of the lesser known and discussed components to David Kibbe’s approach to developing an authentic personal style is his color system.
What I think is quite unique about his approach is that it is rooted in color theory. I know that sounds kind of obvious… aren’t all personal color systems rooted in color theory? Not quite in the same way, no.
To go back to the absolute basics of color theory we start with the foundational concept of Primary Colors; Red, Yellow and Blue. Where In color theory; Yellow is Warm, Blue is Cool and Red is Neutral.
Disclaimer: Yes! There’s such thing as a Warm Blue or a Cool Yellow. David gives every season their own version of Yellow and Blue. However, we’re referencing a *pure** version of these colors - not a blend.*
So when we say “cool toned” this means the colors have a blue base since blue is cool. The same can be said for the concept of “warm toned” which means the colors have a yellow base since yellow is warm.
Now, nobody’s skin tone is literally yellow (we’re not lemons) or literally blue (we are not lizards). We are a complex blend of pigments that create a unique mix of tones within our skin, hair and eyes. What we’re looking to determine with our personal coloring here is wether we have a blue (cool) or golden (warm) undertone. With our hair and eyes providing extra clues but our undertone being the most important factor to consider.
Before we launch into the **Metamorphosis excerpt on David’s approach to personal color, I would like to pause and remind us all, that, as with all things Kibbe, it bares reminding that it is essential we leave all prior ideas on colouring aside and approach this process with a sense of playful exploration and curiosity. Our personal coloring just as our Kibbe ID is part of what makes us uniquely beautiful. So it’s not about there being a “correct” or “incorrect” answer. It’s about celebrating what is innate to us.*

Discovering the magic of your coloring

So much has been written in recent years about your coloring and "having your colors done" that I simply can't take you through this journey without a brief detour in this often confusing area.
As a firm believer in the beauty of our natural coloring, I've always felt that it should be enhanced and prized as one of our greatest gifts from Nature. Since I could be described as one of the pioneers of the modern color movement, I've worked long and hard to educate the public about the possibilities and systems that exist to make working with your coloring easy, clear, exciting, and most of all, fun!
In the past few years, I've watched many variations spring up on the basic theme of personal color analysis. As in all extremely popular fields, some of the "new" variations are simply gimmicks de- signed to cash in on the latest fad, while others bear at least some validity.
For my money, however, the basic system of the seasonal color theory originally developed by Johannes Itten of the Bauhaus School is still far and away the most effective.
This theory divides your coloring into four basic categories named after the seasons, based on two parts of your genetic makeup: (1) the undertone of your skin, which is blue or golden and functions as the "base" of your coloring; and (2) the in- tensity of your coloring, which has to do with the type of "contrast" between your hair. skin, and eyes.
Simply put, your "season" is a general description of the type of coloring you inherited and the palette of colors that will enhance it. Each "season" represents a family of colors that consists of over two million shades within the palette. Here's a brief description of each:

Winter

Blue undertone to the skin. High-contrast coloring (distinct difference between the hair, skin, eyes).
Palette: Cool, clear colors. Blue-based shades with sharp intensity. A jewel-toned palette ranging from vivid colors to very pale, icy shades.
Person: The hair is usually dark (a solid color as opposed to visibly highlighted) with an ash base, and the skin and eyes are quite clear.
Celebrities: Elizabeth Taylor, Cher, Diahann Carroll, Connie Chung.

Summer

Blue undertone to the skin. Blended contrast (the hair, skin, eyes tend to blend together).
Palette: Cool, muted colors. Blue- based shades with a saturated intensity. A dusty palette ranging from pastels to very deep shades.
Person: The hair is usually medium dark to medium light (a dense color with a very subtle highlight) with an ash base, and the skin tone is saturated while the eyes are softly muted.
Celebrities: Grace Kelly, Queen Elizabeth, Jane Fonda.

Autumn

Golden undertone to the skin. Contrast is medium to high, but characterized by richness.
Palette: Warm, intense colors. Yellow based shades with a heavy saturation of richness. A fiery palette ranging from very vivid, hot shades to a few softly muted neutrals.
Person: The hair is usually a richly highlighted shade with a red base, ranging from very deep chestnut to fiery auburn to a very deep honey. The skin tone is rich and saturated (ranging from very pale to very deep) and the eyes are a mixture of marbelized color.
Celebrities: Natalie Wood, Ann-Margret, Diane Keaton, Katharine Hepburn, Shari Bela- fonte-Harper.

Spring

Golden undertone to the skin. Contrast is delicate, but sharp.
Palette: Warm and clear colors. Yellow based shades with a light, bright intensity. A vibrant pal ette ranging from very fresh, vivid shades to a few clear pales.
Person: The hair is usually a medium dense shade (with a subtle natural highlight) and a golden or red base, ranging from medium golden brown to strawberry to golden blond. The skin tone is clear and delicate, and the eyes are crisp.
Celebrities; Shirley MacLaine, Sissy Spacek, Vanessa Williams, Arlene Dahl, Eva Gabor.

Draping the Seasons

Question: How can I determine my "season"? Can I tell by just looking at myself in the mir ror? Can I tell by looking at the underside of my wrists?
Not really. The best way to objectively determine your season is with the help of three or four friends. To correctly determine your season, you've got to first determine both the undertone of your skin (blue or golden), and then the type of contrast between your hair, skin, and eyes. The only way to accurately do this is by a process called "draping," whereby you drape selected shades of fabric under your chin and compare the color of the fabric to the colors in your face. You cannot determine your undertone by simply looking at your wrist because you are merely viewing the "shade" of your skin tone, as opposed to the undertone or base coloration.
In the draping process, you discover your skin's undertone by an indirect method. The aim is to enhance the undertone of your skin by using a complementary base color from the selected fabric.
Here's how to do this: With a group of three or four friends, assemble the following large swaths of fabric:

Four shades of green:

a) a blue-based emerald green (clear and vivid)
b) a blue-based sen green (soft and dusty)
c) a yellow-based mossy green (rich and in- tense)
d) a yellow-based bright chartreuse (light and clear)

Four shades of red:

a) a blue-based scarlet (clear and vivid)
b) a blue-based dusty raspberry (soft and muted)
c) a yellow-based tomato (rich and intense)
d) a yellow-based bright poppy (light and clear)

Four shades of blue:

a) a blue-based royal (clear and vivid)
b) a blue-based cornflower (soft and dusty)
c) a yellow-based teal (rich and intense)
d) a yellow-based bright aqua (light and clear)

Four shades of pink:

a) a blue-based fuchsia (vivid and clear)
b) a blue-based dusty rose (soft and muted)
c) a yellow-based salmon (rich and intense)
d) a yellow-based bright coral (light and bright)
Now drape each other in these colors, following the order in which they're listed. As you're watching this process, be sure to focus on the person's face, not the color. (Remember, you're seeking to discover which color brings the person out, not sim- ply the color you like best.)
In the right shade, you'll watch the person's skin tone become smooth and clear; shadows will seem to miraculously disappear!
In the wrong shades, the color will reflect onto the person's face; you'll notice the color, not the person.
Have your friends vote on what they're seeing. You'll nearly always find the consensus of others to be correct. (Your own opinion may be somewhat prejudiced by color preferences and the thought of having to change your wardrobe!)
If the consensus is that the colors of group a tested best on you consistently, you are a "Winter." If the consensus is toward group b, you are a "Summer." If the consensus is toward group c, you are an "Autumn"; and if the consensus is toward group d, then you are a "Spring."
NOTE: It's very important to perform this draping ceremony in natural light, so be sure you work near a large window with good sun exposure. Also, if your hair has been artificially colored, or has any chemical processing on it such as perms or waves, be sure to cover it with a white turban or bandanna. This will prevent your altered haircolor from throwing any shadows on your face, which could result in a misanalysis. This is crucial in determining your season, so don't forgo it in the name of vanity! Since the skin tone is a much subtler color than your hair, it's very easy to simply match the shades of fabric to the hair, rather than to the complexion. Also, be sure you remove all traces of makeup before you begin!

Questions & Answers

Q. Can I be a mixture of seasons!
A. No, you cannot. It's genetically impossible! Each "season" refers to a specific type of coloring, of which there are only four. For example, you cannot have a mixture of a golden and a blue undertone. Since the undertone functions as the base of your skin tone, it determines whether the shade of skin you have is either warm or cool. A color can only have one base, whether it's skin color, haircolor, fabric, a cosmetic shade, or even the paint on your wall!
The basic law of abstract color theory states that the base of a color determines its shade. For example, a burgundy red has a blue base. It is this blue base that actually causes the shade to be burgundy instead of some other shade of red, say tomato red or rust. Likewise, a mossy green is caused by a yellow base, while an emerald green is emerald because its base is blue! Your skin tone is exactly the same. An olive skin is always caused by a blue undertone. That's why it's olive and not a tawny beige (which is caused by a golden undertone). On the other hand, an ivory skin tone has a golden base, which is what makes it ivory instead of porcelain (which is caused by a blue undertone). There isn't a single individual-dead, alive. or yet to be born who possesses a mixture of undertones. It simply can not happen!
Q. What about "intensity"? Can I be a mixture of the "cools" (WinteSummer) or the "warms" (Autumn/Spring)!
A. No, you cannot. As with the undertone, you have one type of intensity to your coloring. High contrast coloring needs clear shades to enhance and bring it out effectively. Blended coloring needs a saturation of color to allow the subtlety of your coloring to show through gracefully. Mixing the clear colors with the dusty tones only negates your particular type of coloring.
Moreover, the palettes themselves simply don't mix effectively when you translate them into clothing and cosmetics. If you were to try to create color combinations of the cool Winter and Summer palettes, for example, you would never be able to effectively combine the jewel tones of Winter with the elegantly dusty shades of Summer. Since the palettes are of opposing intensities, the shades themselves are not at all complementary. Any resulting outfits of clothing would simply be a hodgepodge of mismatched colors!
Even more disasterous would be an attempt to mix the tones in cosmetics. For a makeup to be successful, you absolutely must keep all the colors on your face in one family of color, both in terms of the base and the intensity. Mixing them is akin to wearing a shocking pink blouse with a bright orange lipstick! While the result might not always be this glaring, opposite color families do not blend together!
Q. But I've had my colors done "professionally," and I was told I'm a mixture. Why would that have happened?
A. Basically, that means one of two things. Either you were analyzed incorrectly, which is, unfortunately, becoming quite common because of improper training and a lack of experience among color consultants, or it's simply a question of semantics.
Frequently, in an effort to delineate among the specific shades that you can actually wear effectively (be cause of the variations in individual skin tone, hair, and eye colors that exist within a season), color consult ants have attempted to make your palette as specific to you as possible. This sometimes manifests in your being labeled a mixture of seasons or having a "subseason." While this is technically incorrect, since the colors within the seasonal palettes do not actually blend with the other palettes, the result is usually a way of defining the range of shades within your season that appear most exciting on you.
From my experience, based on analyzing thousands of clients over a number of years, I simply find it too inaccurate and confusing to try to suggest to my clients that they "mix" the palettes. It's not helpful in a practical sense, for it doesn't actually add any colors that they can effectively work with in clothing, cosmetics, or haircolor. And, since it's technically incorrect, as I previously stated, I find that the clients who come to our salon with a "mixture" of colors nearly always have either a diluted appearance, in terms of focus, or they have a lot of mistakes hanging in their closets! Can my "contrast" change with age?
Q. What about as my hair turns gray? Does this change my season?
A. No, your season never changes with age, or anything else! As your hair begins to gray, Nature is not only changing your haircolor, but is also changing your skin tone and eyes at the same time. The balance among these three elements always remains the same. For example, if you're a mature Vivid Winter, like actress Bea Arthur, the balance among your haiskin/eyes is best described as high contrast. You have a vivid haircolor, a fair skin, and an intense eye color. True, your haircolor is not the same as when you were twenty years old, when it was probably a deep brunette, but you've maintained the high contrast coloring you were born with. As your hair began to gray, it didn't turn a dull or mousy shade of gray, but rather went a brilliant silver, didn't it? Your skin and eyes have actually gotten lighter at the same time, even though this difference is probably imperceptible to you. Do yone that your high contrast has not changed at all! You still have a vivid haircolor, a fair skin, and an in- ten eye color. Your balance has remained the same! You are still a Vivid Winter, and the colors that focus your specific coloring are still cool and clear!
Whatever your season, Nature created your haiskin/eyes as a unit. They always change together, and the balance among them never changes That's why your season never changes!
Q. Does my season have anything to do with style? For example, I read somewhere that Winters should stick to solids and geometrics, while Autumns are very good in tweeds and textures.
A. Not in the least! Having your colors done has absolutely nothing to do with anything other than determining what your skin tone is and which palette of colors to work with to enhance it. It tells you nothing more specific than the range of colors to use. Your specific clothing choices (including fabrics and textures, as well as shapes and lines), makeup shades, and haircolor range all come from developing your personal style through discovering your Image Identity.
For example, Autumns are frequently told to concentrate on use of textures in their wardrobe. Yet Ann-Margret is a Fiery Autumn, but as a Theatrical Romantic, I'd much rather see her in silks, satins, angora, and se quins than rough textures or tweeds any day of the year!
Having your colors done can be a wonderful and exciting addition to your life, and I highly recommend it when it's properly executed. Just be careful not to give it more importance than it's worth. Your coloring is only one part of you - it's worthy of being carefully looked at, but only within the contest of your total look.
Now I’m sure for those of us who are more visual the written descriptions of these colors can be ultra confusing! Unfortunately we can not share the seasonal palettes David has created. However, the palettes as well as a wealth of additional information on the sub seasons, additional celebrities as well as the three make up palettes for each season etc. can be accessed within the Four Season Freedom Facebook Group.
My personal tip is to get a good grasp on basic color theory by understanding what blue based vs yellow based colors look like. A really creative and explorative way to approach this is by getting some paints out and mixing the tones to see how blue (cool) with added yellow (warm) transforms into a warm blue. (Please ensure you use a true Yellow, a true Blue, a true Red, a true Black and a true White).
The goal of the system isn’t to just wear the colors David has in his seasonal palettes - it’s to use these as a jumping off point. So, that you can then take the concept of your coloring and have the ability to intuitively identify colors that harmonise with you rather than pull out a palette on your phone every time you go clothes or make up shopping!
Each season can be quickly understood by what it’s characteristics evoke:

Winter (Cool) is Jewel

Spring (Warm) is Vibrant

Summer (Cool) is Lush

Autumn (Warm) is Fiery

A quick disclaimer!! No season gets boring muted colors. Everyone gets beautifully saturated colors! You won’t see the sad, drab and dull tones often seen in other seasonal color systems here! For example Summer is Lush in tone not muted and Autumn is fiery in tone, again not muted In any sense if the word.

Let’s talk about the defining characteristics tied to certain seasons

I want to preface this part, by reminding us all that much like our Kibbe ID, we are born with the innate characteristics we have ; we are who we are meant to be! And so it’s never a case of being relegated to certain IDs or color seasons based on certain characteristics. But, instead we are embarking on the journey to discover what has always been there with the objective of achieving harmony with ourselves and in doing so bringing out our unique beauty.
Brown eyes Brown eyes are a feature of high contrast coloring and therefore will always be a high contrast season; Autumn or Winter.
Naturally Ginger / Red hair Ginger / Red hair is a warm color (a mix of a golden base with added red) and therefore will always be a warm season; Spring or Autumn.
An Olive undertone Olive is always caused by a blue undertone, therefore it will always be Winter.
Naturally Blonde hair Blonde hair can be any season except for Winter which requires a high level of contrast between the features; Skin/HaiEyes.
The Color Black Black is considered a cool tone that casts a shade on its surrounds, due to its depth of contrast is only given to Winters as with Winters it enhances the clarity of coloring whether-as with all other seasons it muddies their coloring.
The Color White White, on the other hand is universally given to all seasons as it is considered a neutral.

2024.05.14 16:13 MyFerrariMakesMeCry 69-year old father recently diagnosed with AML from having MDS. Please tell me what to expect going forward and how to best approach this.

Hello all, first post on this sub. Firstly, many thanks to everyone for the amount of useful information you give us and for how openly you talk about your own experiences. I know it cannot be easy but it's invaluable and I appreciate you for it.
My (26m) father was diagnosed with a very aggressive lymphoma back in 2019, he fought like a lion and underwent devastatingly strong chemos/treatments which saved his life but caused myelodysplastic syndrome. This obviously caused him all sorts of issues with blood platelets, white/red blood cell counts, haemoglobin et all. He has undergone 9 rounds of chemo in the past 1.5-2.5 years in order to "control" the disease. There were two occasions last year where we had to rush him to the ER because he woke up barely conscious, incoherent, with an incredibly high fever and in a frightening state; he always recovered shortly thereafter and spend a month plus in the hospital on each occasion. He was never considered for a bone marrow transplant due to age and his general health (relative to the disease) but he did get stem cell treatment which have apparently not done their job (I say this as somebody who is ignorant in the field, I'm not even sure what they were supposed to do in the first place).
A recent routine bone marrow biopsy returned a blast cell count high enough to warrant a diagnosis of AML. My father is entering hospital today to receive additional treatment to complement the one he already receiving - he is doing well and is always the same but they want him as an inpatient so they can be on "standby" in the event that whatever happened last year happens again and he's due to remain there for 30-40 days. My father is 69 years old and a plastic surgeon; he's a strong, hard-working man and has been his entire life. Took the treatments and side effects like a champ - I've seen him weaker but not frailer, I've seen him despondent but unyielding, I've seen him depressed but never tired of living. He's always been well (relatively speaking for somebody with his condition) but he's obviously had side effects of the physical (strength, endurance etc) and mental kind.
My father is my best friend and the center of my life and today I am hoping that somebody here can tell me what to expect moving forward. How should I approach this? What should I prepare for and what important information should I be aware of? I know that prognosis numbers/statistics for AML are very unfavourable but I also know that there are a number of factors that skew these excessively so I am approaching this knowledge erring on the side of caution. I have seen so much differing info on this sub alone - some say it's treatable, some say it's treatable for younger people but devastating for older, some were just saying nothing but offering well wishes; what is for certain is that this is a horrible thing to go through and a merciless ailment. I would everyone to give me their experiences, their knowledge, their everything so that I may best approach this situation.
Thanks to everyone in advance - you guys are saviours and heroes, every single one of those that post on this sub. You help so much just by writing.

2024.05.14 16:11 ComedianNew2079 Top 10 Tips for Hiring a Security Guard in Vancouver

Hiring a security guard is a crucial decision for any business or individual in Vancouver looking to protect their assets, maintain a safe environment, and deter criminal activity. Whether you're seeking to hire for a commercial property, event security, or residential safety, understanding the key considerations can help ensure that you engage the most competent and reliable personnel. Here are the top 10 tips to guide you through the process of hiring a security guard in Vancouver.

1. Determine Your Security Needs

Before beginning your search for a security guard, assess what your specific security needs are. Consider factors such as the size of the area to be monitored, the nature of the protection (e.g., theft, vandalism, access control), and whether you require armed or unarmed guards. Clearly defining your requirements will help you find a security guard who is best suited to your circumstances.

2. Look for a Licensed Professional

In British Columbia, all security guards must hold a valid security license issued by the Security Services and Investigators Act. Ensure that any guard you consider hiring is licensed and check the status of their license to confirm it is current and in good standing. This not only verifies their legitimacy but also indicates that they have undergone the necessary training and background checks.

3. Experience and Specialization

Experience matters when it comes to security. Look for guards who have experience specifically in the type of security you need. For instance, if you need event security, a guard with experience in handling crowds and emergency situations would be ideal. Similarly, expertise in residential security or corporate security can be invaluable depending on your requirements.

4. Consider the Guard's Background and References

Always take the time to check a security guard’s references and background. This includes previous employment checks, criminal background checks, and any disciplinary actions in their professional history. Speaking to former employers can provide insight into their reliability, work ethic, and effectiveness.

5. Evaluate Training and Certifications

Security guards in Vancouver must complete basic security training to obtain their license. However, additional training in areas such as first aid, crisis intervention, and advanced security techniques can be beneficial. Verify the training certificates and look for guards who are committed to continuous education in their field.

6. Interview Candidates Thoroughly

When interviewing potential security guards, pay attention to their communication skills, alertness, and professionalism. These qualities are just as important as their physical ability to manage security tasks. Ask scenario-based questions to assess their judgement and problem-solving skills.

7. Assess Their Physical Fitness

Depending on the nature of the job, physical fitness can be an essential requirement for a security guard. Ensure that the candidates have the physical capabilities required to perform their duties, especially if the job involves extensive patrols or responding to emergencies.

8. Observational Skills

A good security guard must have excellent observational skills. During the hiring process, evaluate their ability to quickly and accurately assess a situation. Guards must be able to notice out of the ordinary occurrences and act swiftly to resolve issues.

9. Technology Proficiency

In today’s security landscape, being technologically adept is increasingly important. Many modern security systems involve digital surveillance, electronic reporting, and the use of technological devices. Ensure that the security guard you hire is comfortable with using technology and can adapt to new tools and systems.

10. Choose a Security Guard with Strong Interpersonal Skills

Lastly, the ability to handle and interact with people respectfully and effectively is crucial. Security guards often deal with the public, and their manner can affect your business's reputation and the effectiveness of their role. Look for guards who are approachable, good communicators, and capable of deescalating tense situations.
Hiring the right security guard in Vancouver involves careful consideration of their licensing, experience, and skills. By following these tips, you can enhance your chances of selecting a guard who will effectively contribute to the safety and security of your premises or event. Remember to also consider how well the guard aligns with the specific cultural and operational aspects of your business or personal security needs.

Essential Site Skills Champions Employee Well-Being with New Flexible Working Legislation
Essential Site Skills, a leading UK training provider, is proud to share its positive experiences and ongoing commitment to flexible working practices, including remote work and varied working hours. Under the guidance of Executive Director Catherine Storer, the company has successfully embraced a flexible work model that was initially adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic. This approach has not only expanded the talent pool but also significantly enhanced employee satisfaction.
Navigating New Legislation
With the recent passing of new legislation by the government to support flexible working rights, Essential Site Skills is ahead of the curve, having already implemented such practices. "This new law solidifies what we've known all along—that flexible working is essential for a modern workforce," Storer remarks. The legislation, aimed at promoting work-life balance, allows employees to request flexible working arrangements from day one of employment.
The Shift to Flexible Working
During the challenging times of the COVID pandemic, Essential Site Skills pivoted to a flexible work arrangement as a necessary adjustment. The success of this shift made it clear that flexibility should not just be a temporary solution but a permanent feature of our work culture. "The adoption of flexible working has opened up a wealth of opportunities for both our team and the company," says Catherine Storer. "We've seen firsthand how it can lead to a happier, more dedicated workforce."
Benefits for Employers and Employees
For Essential Site Skills, the advantages of flexible working have been numerous. Employers enjoy a wider selection of candidates, unhindered by geographical constraints. This broader talent pool has led to a more skilled and diverse workforce. Additionally, flexible working arrangements have resulted in higher job satisfaction and retention rates, reducing turnover and associated costs. Employees benefit from an improved work-life balance, leading to better mental health and overall job satisfaction. "Our team members appreciate the trust and autonomy that comes with flexible work schedules. This has not only increased productivity but has also fostered a sense of loyalty and commitment to the company," adds Storer.
Flexible Working Fuels Team Success and Growth at ESS
Kayley Arnold Commercial Manager
"Since embracing flexible working at ESS, our team dynamics have evolved. We've not only expanded our capabilities but have also fine-tuned our processes to enhance our customer service, which remains at the heart of what we do. We pride ourselves on our strong client relationships, ensuring they feel valued and well-served.

Flexible working has fundamentally changed how we operate, fostering a deeper sense of care and support across the team. It’s not just the camaraderie or the office biscuits that make coming to work a pleasure—it’s the genuine commitment from ESS to look after us as we grow and face new challenges. Being part of a company that is as forward-thinking as it is supportive makes every day rewarding."
Understanding the Limitations
Despite the many benefits, flexible working does come with its challenges. As an employer, maintaining a cohesive company culture and ensuring effective communication can be more complex with a dispersed team. It requires robust systems and technology to keep everyone connected and working towards common goals.
Key Considerations for Success
To successfully implement flexible working, Essential Site Skills recommends:
  • Clear Communication: Regular and clear communication is crucial to keep all team members aligned and informed.
  • Robust Infrastructure: Investing in the right tools and technology to support remote or hybrid working environments is essential.
  • Continuous Feedback: Encouraging feedback from employees about what works and what doesn't helps refine policies and practices.
Looking to the Future
"Flexible working is now integral to our business strategy and is a major factor in our ongoing success and resilience in the marketplace," concludes Catherine Storer. We are committed to continuing our investment in flexible working practices to support our team's growth and satisfaction.
