2024.05.14 17:46 Mission_Duck_4510 School is asking me to hide from the parents and come to work in private

This is a follow-up post to my previous post about my school informing me that a parent wrongfully accused me of sexual misconduct of a minor.
As advised by everyone on Reddit, and friends, I hired an attorney for 200 USD and sought legal consultation. The attorney informed me I do not have to talk to the police until I have an attorney to represent me in person and advised against doing otherwise.
Fast forward, the attorney contacted the school, the school says no police were coming to talk to me, but instead, the school talked to the police already on my behalf and I will not be talking to police, so I shouldn't worry. This is the opposite of what the director told me the previous day.
Anyway, the attorney recommended that I continue to go to work in the meantime since no police are going to talk to me, and this will avoid further complications for me. The attorney will follow up with me tomorrow about my situation.
This is my current situation...
Now, my school is asking me to no longer come to work at 9 am and greet the parents, but instead, come to work 30 minutes earlier, hide from the parents, not teach kindergarten anymore, and sit behind a computer on a different floor, alone, doing random administrative tasks.
This seems strange and almost illegal because the school is telling me to stay on the 2nd floor of the building and never to come downstairs to greet the kids, and it would be easy for me to simply walk downstairs and reveal myself. This does not make sense, and I don't understand how the school believes this is a long-term solution.
So, according to their instructions, I should work on an abandoned 2nd floor directly above the kindergarten students from 8:30 am to 4 pm, alone, while listening to the kids play and laugh directly below me downstairs, but never reveal myself to the students while they are attending school.
This seems extremely wrong, and could potentially make me look suspicious, which could lead to some legal trouble if the school decided to frame for something. It is on CCTV after all.
I will talk to the attorney tomorrow, but right now, they are not available because it is late. Until then, I would just like anyone's input on the matter.
I tried everything in my power to work things out with this school and I still have 10 months left. I can not do this for 10 more months. Originally, I was promised a release letter 2 weeks ago but my director doesn't want to give me a release letter because I contacted an attorney and it was wrong of me to tell anyone about my situation, according to her.
Also, I recorded my conversation with the director, and she lied multiple times about my contract. The audio of our conversation is very clear and easy to understand. The recording is 1 hour long and I'm not sure if this audio recording will be enough to get me out of the school.
Tomorrow is a holiday, but I don't plan to come to work anymore. I would like to know what could happen in terms of my living arrangements. I don't think they can kick me out of the apartment right away. Maybe they can.
I don't know what to do at this point. It seems like leaving the country is my only safe option.
This is my third school and I already did a visa run to even arrive at my current school, and it feels as though so much money and time was wasted to come back to Korea.
Thank you for any help.

2024.05.14 15:08 YourlocalTitanicguy Odd Titanica: Hollywood sleaze

In this edition of “Odd Titanica”, we are going to dive into the sleazy, opportunistic world of show business. A world that comedian Fred Allen said of, “you can take all the sincerity in Hollywood, place it in the navel of a fruit fly, and still have room for three caraway seeds and a producer’s heart”. Hyperbolic? Let’s take a look at Hollywood’s response to the Titanic disaster to see that there really is no business like show business.
Dorothy Gibson and the lost, first, film are well worn trivia by now. The traumatized actress rushed into production, her inability to process her trauma causing her mental breakdown, collapse, and retirement from acting immediately after the film was finished - it’s a perfect story to demonstrate the callousness of the film industry. But there is more to the story, and digging deeper shows us that “Saved” may have been the least sleazy project undertaken by the studios.
Dorothy’s account of the sinking and the suffering she endured filming “Saved from the Titanic” are predominantly found in two sources - The New York Dramatic Mirror and Moving Picture World. These were trade magazines, published weekly, and consisting solely of material related to the stage and screen business. These would be announcements of upcoming features, casting news, celebrity gossip, technical news - anything the movie star to the man sweeping the floor at the cinema needed to know. And they included ads … lots and lots of ads.
Immediately realizing that Titanic was not only a horrible tragedy but an incredible business opportunity, Moving Picture World got to work. As people stormed White Star Line offices, and raided newspaper carts for any drop of news regarding the sinking, Moving Picture World provided the latest in Titanic news; or perhaps we should say “Titanic” news.
The headlines of the April 27th issue may have screamed TITANIC, but as the public grabbed their copy and hurriedly flipped through the pages, they found that what they were actually given was ads. Those eye grabbing headlines were followed by much smaller print-

THE CRY OF THE CHILDREN …suggested by the poem of Elizabeth Barret Browning in 2 reels this Tuesday!
THE GREATEST MOTION PICTURE OF NATIONAL INTEREST - THE SINKING OF…. the big battleship. Remember the Maine!
THE DEATH SHIP...a sensational two reel drama of the sea containing one of the most thrilling dynamite explosions imaginable!
For all the slimy marketing tricks, flipping through the pages still has plenty of legitimate ads for real Titanic newsreels, movies, and a specific type of presentation known a Myriorama involving painting, music, and recitation. But, show business would strike again - the ads were legitimate, but what they were advertising was not. History has sort of forgotten the huge demand for Titanic media in the wake of the sinking, something that didn’t really exist. When cinema owners would order these “only surviving genuine negatives of the disaster” complete with lobby display package, they instead received-
our astonishment to find the Lusitania and Olympic, and one or two scratch films of ancient days posing as pictures of Titanic.
But they didn’t stop. Animated Weekly advertised that they were “the first to reach the wreck… chartered a tug from Cape Breton and rushed to the scene while the survivors were still in the water”. Cinemas began to promote footage of the sinking. Audiences wrote their disgust to Moving Picture World-
These representations are to the point of criminality … Take, for instance, the picture showing the Titanic with about a sixth of her forward length stuck into the iceberg. Everybody knows the collision did not occur in that manner!
They pointed to the following ad as an example - FIRST PICTURES OF THE TITANIC OCEAN DISASTER. The cinema owners responded by noting that they had misread, crammed in tiny letters were the words “sunk in” so that ad actually read FIRST PICTURES OF THE TITANIC sunk in OCEAN DISASTER. It was the customer's fault, they said, to be stupid enough to think anyone could have actually filmed the sinking.
Once this ruse was discovered, the studios shifted gears. The next step was to advertise film along with presentations by “A Lecturer who was on board”. When the audience realized the lecturer was not on Titanic and demanded a refund - the response from the managers was
Those signs didn’t say he was a survivor.
… and any attempt to charge him with the crime of fraud was absurd because, in his own words-
Of course I didn’t give him his money back. The sign didn’t misrepresent anything. West was on the Titanic, the sign didn’t say when he was.
…which was true. The lecturer, Eugene West, had visited Titanic while she was under construction at Belfast.
As for the movies themselves?
We said we had pictures. If people were foolish enough to think we meant moving pictures, that was their fault.
This particular cheated audience member was told if he wanted his money back, to go on the street and sing for it. Whether it was this, or something else, eventually the public snapped and began hauling out cinema managers and beating them in the streets. By May, the mayors of Boston and Memphis had banned the showing of any Titanic pictures - moving or still- within the city.
But, where was Dorothy in all this? Tucked in the very back of the magazine, after another newsreel ad,, we get to the celebrity sighting and gossip section. Ed Lux of the Rex Film Exchange was in town, Dan Markowitz of Fox Pictures was as well, Arthur Schmidt of the Victor Film Company was seen having a lovely spa at a Turkish Bath, Sam Gobel of the St Louis Motion Picture Company has been walking up and down 42nd street, we don’t know if Southern film maker Henry Wasserman is still here but he might be, Dorothy Gibson survived the sinking of the Titanic, and the Director of Selig Pictures took some actresses to Santa Catalina for a swim and a photoshoot and they had a great time.
By the following edition, on May 2nd, Moving Picture World was also able to provide its readers with the first stills from “Saved from the Titanic” and a feature on Dorothy. Along with this, tucked in the editorials, the magazine finally published a piece of truthful news about the Titanic disaster-
Senator William Alden Smith … declined to grant permission to have the cinematopgraph make a record of the sessions of the committee. “The sessions” he is quoted as saying…”are solemn affairs and must not be hippodromed or commercialized”. He is, however, falling into a serious error in judgement-
…they sniffed.
As a matter of right, the camera man ought to have been permitted. The day of the enfranchisement of the motion picture will surely come .. which will give equal rights to the cinematographer and the newspaper man.
Then, among the illegal false advertising and reports of public brawls at the cinema, they ended with-
The lesson of the Titanic disaster and all its incidents can be made far more impressive by pictures that move than by mere words in cold letters.

2024.05.14 12:51 no_blueforyellow Advice on how to become more financially literate and handle my money better?

I was never taught financial literacy by anyone, so the only knowledge I have is pretty basic. Or it comes from Google. I clear $2k/week after taxes with no rent or mortgage as I inherited my grandparents house which i know puts me at an advantage. I know fuck all about investing, I try to learn and it just doesn’t click. So I am working on learning about Roth IRAs. Right now, aside from bills, I am just pumping money into all of my debts (I got rid of $11k in debt and have about $5k to go)
Basically what I am asking is how to divide my money. Are there any links/resources that might dumb it down to a kindergarten level for me? 😅 I have a savings, my daughter has a savings too ($100 goes into her account every week since shes been born, shes almost 3 now) What guides or resources are the best place for me to look at and start so I can make sure I make the most of my money and grow it. Also, are there any other programs aside from 529 that I could set up for my daughter that might help her? I want to set her up financially the best I possibly can. I just dont know where to begin with any of this aside from “savings account” “checking account” and “pay debts and bills”.
When I had learned about everything I had inherited I became stupid, lazy, and neglectful. But since I had my daughter I need to set myself and her up for success and I am failing miserably. Its pretty bad. :/
TIA. 🙂
edit: grammar

2024.05.14 11:37 atmaninravi Encouraging children to be spiritual

While children are taught moral education and other different subjects in schools, including mythological and religious stories, besides disciplines like languages, sciences, math, there is no focus on spirituality. Unfortunately, people tend to confuse religion with spirituality. But spirituality is different from religion. Spirituality is a way of life. It is beyond religion. Religion is only the kindergarten of spirituality. Religion teaches us the ABC of God, it introduces God to us at an early age. It helps build faith. By giving God a form, as religion does, it can help a child connect to God. Religion also provides us with a certain moral and ethical framework that we can live by, but it stops at that. Spirituality is beyond religion. Spirituality is the science of the spirit. It helps us realize the truth. It helps us realize who we are, who God is, what the purpose of life is and how we can attain it. We realize that we are not the body, mind and ego but the Soul. That God is not a person or saint but a power and we are a part of that power. We realize that God is one and everyone and everything is a manifestation of God.
Spirituality, thus, sets things in perspective. It fosters love
and compassion towards everyone and everything. It promotes togetherness, brotherhood and universal love.
By helping our children become spiritual, we can help eliminate stress, anxiety, stress, depression, anger, hate, jealousy, suffering and misery from their lives. By encouraging spiritual practices, we can help children be happy and peaceful. Our children and our world would be very different if children grew up being spiritual. Spirituality paves the way for a life of happiness and peace.

Unfortunately, we are so lost in this material world that we are ourselves ignorant about the reality and truth of life. As parents or guardians, we pressurise children to come first in whatever they do. We tell them as we were told — ‘be successful’, because we believe that success is happiness. We want them to win trophies and medals in sports, academics — everything. But the truth is that the so-called happiness from achievements is not real happiness. It is only momentary pleasure. It is ephemeral. The fact is that happiness is success and not the other way round. If we are happy, we are already successful. In reality, success brings with it stress and worry. At times, people resort to immoral and unethical ways to be at the top. Most of us don’t stop at our need, we go beyond to greed. But things can never make us happy. Happiness is a state of being. We have to ‘be’ happy, moment by moment. The truth is that nothing belongs to us. Why do we want to amass a fortune? Ultimately, it will all be left behind. Sadly, we end up teaching children the wrong things. Children grow up wanting to become an ace in the race, but finally, they get caught in the maze.

We must therefore encourage spirituality in children. And below are simple ways of doing it:

First of all, we must understand what spirituality is and incorporate it into our daily life. If we don’t know what spirituality is, what can we tell our children? Children learn by example and we must set an example. If we ourselves are busy chasing success and achievements, hoarding and collecting wealth, how can we guide our children? While making money or wanting to be successful in itself is not bad, the problem is that we become addicted to it. We don’t know when and where to stop. We must ourselves do good deeds and treat other people, all beings and nature with reverence. We must, thus, lead by example.
Next, we can encourage spiritual practices like Yoga and meditation. Yoga is not just about asanas or physical exercises or pranayama or breathing techniques. Yoga means union with God. Nonetheless, _asanas_ and _pranayama_practices do promote well-being and peace. Similarly, we can encourage devotion or Bhakti in children by praying together, by singing Bhajans, hymns together.
Next, we must help children differentiate between the myth and the truth. Most of the stories children read or are told are myths, including that of Ganesha or Shiva. While this generates interest in the Divine, as they grow older, we must help them realize that God is not Ganesha or Shiva. God is not a person, but a Power, the Supreme Immortal Power. We must teach them to go beyond praying to Ganesha or other idols to praying through these idols to God, the Supreme Immortal Power.

We can try to guide children in day to day life. We can help them be mindful of nature, to connect with nature and treat other creatures with respect and love. We can help them choose what they read and ensure that they do not pick up more myths and lies. There are many spiritual parables, and stories that can communicate the truth in a simple and engaging manner. We must encourage children to ask questions about life, death, about God and help them understand reality. We must not tell them to blindly believe or follow what has been told to us for generations.

Finally, if we have the blessings and guidance of a spiritual mentor or Guru in our life, a truly enlightened being, we must allow children to have interactions with the Guru, or listen to his discourses. This spiritual interaction and education from a spiritually evolved person can leave a deep impact on young, impressionable minds.

2024.05.14 10:53 sorryPOShuman Do I even deserve to live?

I don’t deserve the air I breathe...
Hello.
Before I get into my story, I have one question for you: Is there any chance for redemption for the hell and hurt you’ve caused in this life?
I am 23 years old. I’ve had horrible suicidal depression my whole life. I have been addicted to fentanyl since 15. A little under two years ago, I had 3 wrecks in a year nodding off behind the wheel. Thankfully, I didn’t injure anyone physically, but I totaled both vehicles in all 3 incidents.
The first one involved a single mother and her barely kindergarten aged child. I can’t get the picture of the fear in that baby’s eyes out of my head. I could have killed them both, and that should have been bad enough to stop me from using while driving but i did it again and again. Enough to have two more wrecks and cause even more financial and emotional burdens on everyone involved.
My parents have done everything they can do for me. They’ve sent me to rehabs, supported me every step of the way, bought me vehicle after vehicle even after the wrecks.
My mom had fucking CANCER during this time and I stole money from them to get a fix. WHILE SHE WAS FUCKING DYING.
I feel like I don’t even deserve to be alive. Is there any chance for redemption at this point? Or should I just give up now and squash any chance of causing any future pain for other innocent people?
I can’t live with myself, I can barely leave home, I can barely function.
I just want to find these people I wrecked into and beg for their forgiveness. Even if the situation is long over with and everything is settled, the guilt still remains and it makes me want to destroy myself.
Thankfully I had insurance and they all got new vehicles but that doesn’t make anything better. It doesn’t take away the fear and pain and financial hardship I caused these innocent people.
How do I learn to live with myself again?
Is there any hope of redemption?
Do I deserve to even live at this point?

2024.05.14 08:50 Abject_Ambassador517 About tuition for school

Regarding the public school system in Japan from kindergarten, elementary, junior high, high school level I understand even the public school system is not free and requires tuition paid and the uniforms, school supplies bought even though they should be getting it from taxes…
What happens if the family is poor and cannot afford to pay the tuition or buy the uniform/materials?
Since school is a legal right does the school have to accept the student anyway? What if for example the family has a parent who gambles all the money at pachinko and keeps coming up with excuses they “will get the money for the school later” but just delays it until graduation? Does the school have to accept the student anyway and eat the costs?

2024.05.14 03:41 storyinmemo Lessons from my first 20 years of Realistic Mode

Started in 1960 and it was rough. Heating issues, water cuts, backed up sewers... but I made it to 10k people. In 1968 I had to enable cheat mode for a one time "loan forgiveness". I built up debt into 1980 but finally turned the profitability corner. So here's what I'm going to try to do in my next play:
Macro Layout
Pollution is king. When things ramped up, 400 meters wasn’t enough. Put the edge of housing a full kilometer from industry and waste handling.
Rail is important early. Lay in a single rail line to pull gravel for construction, coal for a heating plant + bricks, and connecting the farm to the industry. Build your construction industry on one side of the border and your manufacturing industry on the other side of it.
City layout
Start with a bus stop and building your residential buildings 200 meters max away from it. Put paths parallel to roads. Create redundant paths to everything so upgrading to gravel, asphalt, etc. doesn’t break things. Build all your housing on one side of the bus stop initially.
Put city services based on vehicles (police, fire, etc.) outside the core of the city. They’ll only be walkable to half of the city compared to the bus stop but the city can be larger. Same with university and schools. Schools, kindergartens, etc. may become overcrowded as the city grows. Build the large hospital in the core as despite having ambulances it is primarily a walking building.
Transfer for big waste (large) should be at the edge of your city and connected to a rail line. Technical services delivers to there. From there, a rail line eventually exports it for handling. Until the rail station is built, use a distribution office to export waste. Sorting is key and should be researched early. Use Stand for big waste containers (small) attached to roads to collect waste whenever possible. Stand for small containers (large) can be used when footpath access is the only option but it’s remarkably less efficient. Citizens produce about 1:3 biological waste to mixed waste so allocate containers accordingly. Within the city only hospitals create hazardous waste and nobody creates aluminum waste.
Build the small party headquarters to start, then the large technical university. You'll need the numbers for faster education and faster tech tree climbing.
Import 3rd world immigrants once you have a minimum educated base to staff your schools. They're way cheaper. Quality housing > dense housing. Dense is great but dense and poor quality = high resource intake and low productivity. Densify in your second city, or rework.
Monuments only get your to 40% loyalty so don't lose your mind on it.
Water and Power
Redundant and parallel. Every time you place a transformer, place a high six way high voltage splitter with it. You will branch your power network to more places over time and need to reroute wires which you can only do while online with open switch ports. Never use the last switch port without building another chained switch.
Similarly, always branch your water and sewer. Unfortunately you can’t have multiple inputs to a line, but you can at least make sure that you can keep branching until the upstream has nothing left to give. Pay attention to pressure. Build the large water tower to supply the town.
Intake water quality is key. Your wells must be placed where pollution won’t reach. Industry should be fed directly from a well so you’re not spending chemicals purifying water. The more polluted the water is, the more chemicals you’ll have to spend to clean it up and that gets expensive very quickly.
Treating wastewater gives a massive reduction in pollution but also takes an expensive amount of chemicals. Best to put your outlet far away if possible instead of trying to treat the water. Drop a sewer switch (remember, always an empty outlet on every switch for infra changes!) before the outlet in case you change your mind.
Roads
Vehicles use the same amount of fuel as long as they’re in motion. If your vehicle top speed is a fraction of your road speed, you’re wasting money. Road stretches of ~500 meters need to be paved and should probably be divided highways. Tight industrial roads with lots of turns can be gravel because you won’t accelerate much anyway. Panel roads are also pretty good as intermediates here. If you’ve got advanced roads on, make sure to set give ways at every highway intersection or your vehicles will drop down to 50 km/h at every one.
Your center of town road probably gets congested and you can help that by banning heavy goods vehicles except supply.
Industry
Focus around one large long warehouse with a train connection at the end and factories directly connected around the warehouse. Central warehouse should have:
The livestock farm is a bit of a wildcard. It consumes a lot of water and generates a lot of wastewater. Plan for this and consider whether it should be located near your farm or near your factory. I lean towards keeping it with the factory for the sake of concentrating your workforce on one high-throughput passenger line. We'll see how the next playthrough goes.
Mining
Steel is my highest cost and getting to a steel mill that runs even at 5% of capacity seems highly worthwhile. Find coal, colocate with coal mining, attach to train line. Attach transfer to large waste and manage as needed. General separation on site may be reasonable.
Farms
Grow locally. Farms are basically the one thing that doesn’t require people to produce profit or at least reduce cost. As the input to one of your early money makers (clothing)
Economy
Clothing is a top export and accessible early which is key. Build for it, use your own crops, and fill in the rest of the supply chain as you can (chemical plant). Same for steel after some time: find the iron, move it over… but start with making the plant run even with imports.
The republic runs on steel. Want to move something efficiently? You need rails and steel. Want to store it? More steel. More efficient building or process? Going to take steel.
Find coal, make steel. When you have steel, get the radio station going. Yeah, that's not an industry but the productivity boost from loyalty boost is huge.
Now that you have clothing and steel going, make a refinery.
From this point, find the most expensive import and produce it locally until the most expensive doesn’t matter. From there, climb the tech tree into autos and nuclear power. Expand to new cities.

2024.05.14 01:06 SitaSingsTheWhat First Day of Freedom?

Sounds silly right? I would usually be panicking about money but I am decidedly not allowing that. This week is my week of self care.
And I pretty much did what I always do. Sat in the grass. Went for a walk. Wrote. Thought. But I wasn’t bound to the constraints of a workday or being in front of a screen so it was liberating. Scribbling notes for future poems.
I have an idea for one where I am the object being pressed into clay to indicate a trade. Put me in the oven. Record that history. The imprint of a woman. Round bits creating deeper divets. The shadow of my life on an orange tablet, just another transaction.
I ache. It feels like someone is pulling away or leaving. I want to be closer not farther. I want to be whole.

2024.05.14 00:47 Randy_Giles1880 Second time husband has been caught cheating.

The first time, he was on tinder only put pictures with his body showing (he is in great shape) he was on tinder for a year and a half and only met up with one person on the side of the road, at night, going on a run. It took a year for me to ever be intimate with him again. Just recently, these past three months I have finally felt content and I was hopeful for our marriage. I told him I forgive him fully and never loved him more. We have been through a lot of traumatic things together and asked to never hurt me again.
An old friend of mine messaged me a few days ago, with a tinder profile of my husband. This time 7 photos of him fighting and shirtless and in his underwear showing his face. She matched him and she asked about me, he unmatched her. I confronted him he said. That we do not have enough sex and he wanted more and he was only 30% sure he was going to follow through with it and was only on it 4 days before getting caught. He did not try to cheat on me when we had no sex for a year. Suddenly I start having sex with him again and he said it made him want more. I just had a major surgery 4 months ago for a rare compression. I also have more health issues and another medical procedure coming up.
We have a young child together who is very clingy. My husband works 46-50 hour weeks. But we have gotten a lot of financial help from my father’s money who died 3 weeks before my son was born. So he isn’t the only one that contributes to our household. He even had to take my car because he didn’t want to pay to fix his. But still I am grateful and praise him for his hard work. When he gets home, I have eveything taken care of, dinner made so he can just relax for an hour and then we have to get ready for bed. Our child is about to start kindergarten, I told him it will be easier to have some time together then. I also have taught our son to read, write, add, subtract, and he knows his multiplications already before even going to school. I put a lot of my energy into our child. I quit drinking and smoking when I found out I was pregnant and never touched it again. I understand what it’s like to have an itch. I just never acted on mine.
Unfortunately, our sex life is not the greatest. Mostly it consists of oral and hand jobs at most 5 times a week. They are short lived as my son will ask for me. I’m still scared of penetration since he gave me an sti last time that spread to my reproductive organs. But I have had it. I feel like he would cheat regardless, but I still feel at fault. We had a long talk where I got him to stop saying if we had more he would not of looked to cheat, that it was about variety that’s what it was about last time. He also thought if he scratched the itch and actually had a good experience sleeping with other people that he would be able to stop thinking about it. I told him it would do the opposite as when he cheated the last time he had issues getting hard with me.
I feel like an idiot typing this out. He’s a good father. I don’t think I can ever trust him again. Divorce is not an option for me. He now agrees with me and says he is happy he got caught now because he would have made things worse. I can’t help feeling that some of it is my fault though. That I am not giving enough. I asked how much he would need then to not cheat and he said “every day, I don’t know.” And he said it has to be vaginal sex. He can’t even give me straight answers. I don’t think he could have sex everyday with his work schedule and a girl on tinder, but who knows. I don’t know what I’m asking after. Just if anyone can decipher this mess and give me some sort of advice on how to come to terms with this situation.

2024.05.13 20:34 BushLeagueQuant Looking for someone to critique my logic on purchasing a new home.

For context, my wife and I have been planning one moving with in the next year once it youngest child starts kindergarten. Her starting kindergarten rather than pre-k will free up the ~$1200/month we currently pay for child care so we can afford a largenewer home. There is a house currently on the market, we’re putting in an offer this week, that we can (on paper) afford while she is still in pre-k although we’d have to make significant changes to our budget/lifestyle for the next year until she ages out.
That being me to the financial question. We have significant equity in our current house, >$180k, and are planning on using a large portion of that as a down payment. The caveat being that I plan to take out $10-15k and keep it in a dedicated account to subsidize our mortgage for the next year, effectively making it more affordable for the next 12 months until our child ages out and we get that money back on a regular basis. Please critique/criticize this as much as possible.

2024.05.13 18:27 temporarysecretary2 [Offer] Beta reader for your short stories, poems, books, etc.

Hi, I’ll read the book (or any other writing piece) you’re working on and give you my critiques on overall plot and its structure and development. I’ll also give you my notes on characters and their development. If you only have a few chapters written, I’ll read them and give you my notes on the things mentioned above.
Any genre is fine. Some of my favorite genres are sci-fi, adult fiction, the classics, YA, fantasy, “chick-lit”, and what I usually refer to as “slice of life fiction”. I like creepy books as well. I’m not the biggest fan of hardcore horror books, but I’ll still read them for you.
I love the art of storytelling. I watch a lot of movies, and I write about them occasionally. I also took a few courses in literary analysis in college, so I do have experience with criticism and analysis. I, of course, love to read. I’d say I’m not a total speed reader, but I can read relatively quickly. I also enjoy writing poetry and was doing that for a bit for money before chat gpt shut that down.
This goes without saying, but I will not share your work with anyone. It’s yours, and I’m not out here trying to take ideas. I’m only trying to help you shape it into the best version it can be and something that you’re completely satisfied with. I can also help you if you’re stuck and give you suggestions.
$5 for short stories, poems, 60 page books
$10 for books longer than 60 pages
If you can only do PayPal friends and family then I can do that, but I prefer Venmo. Thank you.

2024.05.13 17:11 moonyang13 Confusing INTJ behaviour after rejection

(It got too long, sorry, but I needed to explain) I (27F) met this INTJ online (28M) and we talked for about 3 months. Our messages were really deep and we exchanged and shared many values and it felt like we developed a deep connection and shared many views or future visions (marriage, kids etc).. we became closer until we almost every day alept on the phone (he is from another country). He said so many seeet things which even surprised me and I'm a bit shy in the beginning to say such things. But he made me thaw and open up more and more until we both became kinda lovey dovey like a couple. (But wanted to wait till we meet) I wanted to go to his country again anyway, but he gave me another reason to look forward to it a lot. It seemed so obvious that we will start a relationship after meeting that we even searched for Airbnbs together (like for 2 people).
So I went there, he was picking me up from the airport with flowers. But within the first days of my 1,5 month stay he told me he thinks he can't have a relationship now.
Now about all the more confusing things (only the things he did): - He said he started to worry earlier, so not just suddenly. But to me he kept the lovey dovey behaviour up till we met. He even kissed me the first weekend we stayed together. And he cried in my arms while talking about the not being together. - He still spent my whole stay together with me everyday, even though he had to come late after work. He cared so much for me, always asked me if I'm hungry and brought food etc. or cooked for me - Everyday before and after his work we hugged each other and wished us a good day - He told his mom and brother about me during my stay, how kind I am etc and told me his mom said she wants to meet me (why would he mention that though?) - Even though he mentioned one worry is money and time he invited me to eat out a lot and always insisted to pay except for the times I managed to give my card earlier. Even though I told him I don't care about money or his job. We all started somewhere. And I care about him as a person. - I asked for more reasons and he said there are so many worries, more about himself and that he can't tell me everything - He mentioned that I have so many "perfect girlfriend" attributes and something a man would want and wife material, but maybe some men could also think they are not good enough (maybe he also thought that?) - I told him that I usually don't like situations like this, like couple behavioubeing close like this without relationship. He agreed but he said that I am different/we are different. And when I mentioned that maybe because of that we shouldn't stay together in one place he looked really sad and in the end we stayed together till the end and I tried my best to maybe lose his fears/make him feel comfortable and enjoy time with him - He has nobody to talk to other than his family and me, because he prefers to be alone and has no friends. so it meant even more to me that he spent so much time and seemed to like me. - He said I'm a gift to him, the biggest one in his life - He told me how precious I am to him - He said he wants to always help me - He called me "cutie" in my language a lot - We practiced our languages together - Towards the end he opened up more and became more and more comfortable with me, he also mentioned then that he doesn't know if he is deserving of a relationship and when I told him that he seems quite confused he admitted that - He also became more "close" Like hugs or cuddling (not more), like initiated by him - Sometimes he said things quite randomly/surprisingly, like when we were outside he one time said that usually when he is alone he feels nothing, but with me he is happy. Later he also said that multiple times again, that with me every moment was happy and he thanked me for that - He said he also feels guilty, but guilt is not a big reason to spend time with me, if he wouldn't like spending time with me, he wouldn't - Till the end I was in his phone as "My home " with a emoji with the hearts around the head - He made me a very expensive gift in the last night before I left (even though he mentioned that his job isn't that great etc), he thought about it from before I went there - he held my hand when we went to the airport - He said I shouldn't worry too much and we will meet again and can still text, call and maybe videocall
All this effort and how he thinks about me, but being so unsure about his feelings confused me so much. I always wondered why would make someone such effort even after rejecting someone and spend so much time? So I believed in his words and I thought he is just confused and very unsure about himself and his life, from what I felt.
After I left the country he wrote things like he wants to go home together and how thankful he is and happy he was etc. We still texted afterwards but I also always kept the hope, even afterwards. He said I can't change his decision easily, but why are his actions so different from his decision? I asked him clearly if we really won't be ever able to be together, because I thought it's easier for me to accept it and move on after a clear statement. But even the response to that was unclear. Because he said something like "For your sake I think it's right to say that this is right. But you also could feel my heart"
I left him a birthday gift before I left, becaus his birthday was upcoming. And he sent me pictures after opening and also longer messages how it's touching and to thank me a lot. And also saying that I am luck to him and etc. It made me happy that the personalised gift seemed to mean a lot to him. But some days later I noticed he texted less and his responds took so long. (for the first time in months) So I asked him if he is OK? And that I thought he maybe wants to not text that much anymore or that there is a problem.. but it made him go into lecture mode, that I shouldn't assume things, because that's not the case etc. So I felt a bit sorry to express my feelings but I also told him that he also can always tell me when he needs space or something and I just try to understand him better. But he also told me he wished I wouldn't try to understand better. In my case I think an effort to understand each other better is needed though for human relationships. He later also apologised in the middle of the night, that he never wanted to hurt me but did now and that he just doesn't want me to hurt alone anymore. And I also thanked him for caring about me (since his lecturing way is also one of his ways of caring and it also helps me).
He also said if he wouldn't want to text with me or value me he wouldn't do this lecturing and just not respond. After that we exchanged a few longer positive/appreciative messages for 2 days and onto my last one he only put a heart reaction and didn't reply anymore. He liked my story when I wrote a poem in his language which was about him (nobody would know) and saying he shouldn't be too hard on himself. He still looks at my story and didn't change the stickers on his profile (which represented us) etc. I wondered if I should reach out, because it's on my mind everyday too much. Since almost 3 weeks now. But I also said and did everything I could during our time. And I also want to give him space to figure himself and his life out because he spent so much time on me before and he seems very confused about what he wants in life.. I still don't think he is someone who just says meaningful things easily..
I feel like it can't be the end like this.. Do you think he would come back by himself after some time?

Need help sons emotional state
I did a reading on my son and our relationship with what’s going on with him last week. Here is a link of you would like to see it https://www.reddit.com/Tarotpractices/s/TWvSsRUQ7R
My son knows I’m learning tarot and he himself is interested in it so he asked me to do a reading on his emotional development and why he feels the way he does. I decided to use the emotional development spread. 1. How you felt initially Ten of cups reversed: unhappy family 2. How you used to feel page of cups: childlike energy, mischievous. Something to do with a pregnancy? 3. How you feel now4 of cups: detached from my emotions 4. The next step King of cups reversed: angry and overly emotional 5. Final outcome Three of cups: celebration
Then I pulled two from the dark mirror deck for his emotional state: sacrifice and envious gluttony.
I feel like I have to give some context here and spill some of my own tea in order to get the help I need with this reading. My son’s father and I had my son young. During our relationship he was emotionally distant and abusive. He would talk to random girls on MySpace and collect naed pics of them. He would talk to exgf and have a USB filled with half naed pics of girls we used to go to hs with almost like his own private yearbook but of only girls with no clothes on. How he got all these pics of them I have no idea. Didn’t find out about that one til years later but I digress. He would lie about money, leave me alone with the baby for hours on end while he would disappear and we fought a lot. After spending a few years trying to make it work I finally called it quits. He lost his mind. Told me I was ruining the family, my son would hate me, threatened to unalive himself. Threatened this and that. But it didn’t work. I was done.
Eventually he would see my son on the weekends and my son would stay with me during the week. My son and I always had a great relationship up until the break up. Granted he was 2 1/2 but he was a mamas boy through and through. After the breakup all that changed. It got even worse when I started dating my husband a few months later. I ended up finding out MANY years later that during this time My ex was telling my son to act out when he was with me. That it made him happy when he did that. That I didn’t really love my son and I broke up the family and now I’m trying to replace him with my husband. All the while he would smile in my face and tell me everything was going to be ok when I cried to him about how my son was acting and treating me. He would always say that we were “on the same page” and he would do what he could to help me out with what was going on with my son. My son looked upon me so poorly that one day my husband told me that on the way home from school be pulled off road and had a stern talk with my son because he couldn’t believe the things that were coming out of his mouth about me. It’s always really bothered my husband how my son has treated me.
I tried my best to spend one on one time with him when I had him during the week. Take him places like the zoo or an amusement park. Take him out to eat. Play dress up with him. Nothing I did was good enough and he would let me know it wasn’t . When I used to ask him if he had fun with me after doing something for example I took him to seaworld one time and he goes “yeh it was ok but my dad took me to Chuck E. Cheese and that was really fun.” it started to seem like it was becoming a competition between his dad and I. No matter what I did in the eyes of my son it was never as good as what his dad would do for him. Then I became pregnant after my husband and I got married. That’s when things with my son got even worse. Now mind you at this time, my son is still very young like kindergarten age so I’m thinking that maybe this is just how it is when kids are this young. I ended up finding out many years later that my ex told my son when I got pregnant that I did that on purpose to replace him. My son started acting out even worse than before. And it started to spill out at his school.
Eventually, we moved to another state and away from his dad. While he was with me, his behavior really seemed to improve, but when he would go to his dad‘s house over the summer to visit, he would come back home and he would be acting the same way as before. Then he, myself and my husband would spend time trying to bring him back to the state that he was before he left for his dad‘s house only for all of it to be undone when he would go to his dad’s. I wanted to tell him that I didn’t want him going to his dad’s anymore at all, but I knew that that would only come back to haunt me in the end so I suffered through it.
Eventually, I took him to a counselor where it seemed to be helping with his behavior, but again when he would go to his dad, everything would be undone and he would go back to the counselor only to start over again. We played this back-and-forth game for about five or six years. All this time I never spoke to my son about what really happened between his dad and I. I kept things very quiet into myself and never spoke about anything that I endured with his dad during the time we were together. I also never spoke about finances and his dad wasn’t paying child support and was lying to me about being broke. I kept all of that to myself and never mentioned anything because I didn’t want it to have a negative effect on my son and how he viewed his dad.
Until one day when I end up, taking my ex to court for child support, my ex lost it and spewed all of this hatred towards my son While he was there visiting him. My son came home and unloaded all of that frustration onto me. It was almost like my son was having a mini anxiety attack. That’s when I decided to sit down with him, even though I felt at the time he was still a little bit too young and I tried to tell him what happened on a level to which he would understand. I also explained to him why his dad had to pay child support and why he hadn’t been paying it for so long. At that point it was like something in my sons mind had clicked. It was like the clouds cleared from his head and he was able to see what was going on this whole time. That’s when he told me about how his dad would tell him all of these things about my husband and about my other child and about myself and how I was doing all these things because I didn’t love my son.
That’s when things clicked for me that to my face my ex was supporting me, but behind my back he was trying to ruin me and the relationship that I had with my child. We spent many weeks talking about things and I explained to him how I felt and how I wish I would’ve known this sooner because I would’ve been able to stop it had I have known. But I don’t blame my son because he was still just a child and didnt understand Anything. Our relationship started to get a lot better.
We still had Rocky moments and we still do have Rocky moments, but we are nowhere in the same realm as what we used to be in back in the day. I also feel like my son sees his father in the different light now. Of course he still loves him, but now that he knows that his father is very manipulative. He catches on to things a lot quicker. Unfortunately, though I have noticed that there are some things some negative qualities about my ex that my son has picked up. for example, wanting all the attention to be on him and doing things sometimes that are bad in order to gain that attention. My son has been working with the counselor on and off for a while now as he has a hard time finding one that he really connects with. My son also has issues with anxiety and depression, especially after a big break up with a girlfriend that he called his first love.
My son is now 17 so I am trying to give him more responsibilities as he will soon be an adult and kind of “loosen the leash” a little on him so that he has a little more freedom. But I see him making a lot of the same mistakes that his father used to make and I’m worried. My ex recently had a baby the first one since we split and my son says it doesn’t bother him but I’m not so sure about that. I think it maybe be brining up old feelings about what his dad used to tell him. I would really appreciate any feedback that you guys could give me on this reading and I really apologize for how long this post has been, but I felt it necessary for me to spill some of my secrets in order for people to be able to help me. thank you and have a great day

2024.05.13 09:23 RachelTalks2Much [NY] Physical custody parent moving out of state

TLDR: I tried to keep this short, it was impossible. A very brief summary: My son is almost 15. I have had physical custody (legally) since he was a baby. My ex-husband sees our son every other weekend from friday around 4-6, until sunday morning. My son does not enjoy going to his dad's house for several reasons (which I think are valid, although I would never tell my son i think they are valid - I really try to build his father up to him). We live in NY, and the price of living has gotten to a point I simply cannot afford it. Child support does not even cover my sons grocery bill. I am getting a sizeable, but not massive, inheritance from my Nan who passed. It is not enough to do anything here, but in NC, where my brother and his wife live, I can put a down payment on a small home or townhouse.
EVen though I had always had our son 97% if the time, and my e x does NOT want custody --- what are my options court wise? Is there something I specifically file for the right to do (move? Had anyone heard of a court forcing someone to stay in an area when visitation with other parent is minimal?)
am so sorry such a big post....
I will try and keep this as unbiased (because trying to plead my case to look the best doesn't help me at all with advice) and as quickly as possible, and in advance, thank you so much for reading, and hopefully give me any advice. I want to move from NY to NC in July to be close to my family, and because honestly - it is just too expensive here. I am getting a small inheritance, but it is enough to put a downpayment on a house in NC. While my ex-husband initially agreed, and he said it was up to our almost 15 year old who he wanted to live with (which was me, since he has always lived with me) today he told me he wanted to go to court.
I had my son in 2009, and I left his father in 2010, when our son was five months old. I left the marriage because my then-husband was emotionally abusive.
After I left, I did not hear from my ex-husband for several months. Then my MIL got in touch asking to see my son, which I, of course, instantly agreed to. Over the next 5 months, my ex-husband started to interact with our son by way of his mother inviting him over when she had our son. I had no issue with this.
Then I got served papers, in which my ex-husband wanted visitation set up. I had no issue with this. My ex-husband did not go for custody, rather visits every other weekend and 2-3 hours once a week. I did not go after spousal support, and accepted $85 a week in child support, despite knowing my son was owed way more, in hopes he would take this a gesture of peace and spend more time with our son.
We lived right down the street from each other, and I did try and push my ex-husband to spend more time with our son so they could bond, but outside of every other weekend (many of which he spent with my ex's family) he asked for no additional time.
I legally have physical custody, his father has visitation Friday evening through Sunday morning bi-weekly. (I can not stress enough how I have never, ever withheld time with our son - I consistently tried to set things up outside of the limited visitation he requested.)
He got remarried when our son was small. When our son was in kindergarten I got a call that I had to come to the school right away. I got there ASAP and they told me the police were coming, and that my son had indicated being touched inappropriately. Long story short - CPS got involved, and requested a restraining order against my ex-husbands wife. Apparently, what we learned over the next year in court was that she has physically restrained my son in front of family by putting him in a "body lock" and in front of my exes family had also disrobed in front of my son. When my sister in law went to hide my sons face, my ex-husbands wife laughed and said, "Oh he's seen me naked lots of times." The court decided he had not been sexually touched (I also don't think she touched him, I just think she overstepped in HUGE ways - especially because I have never, ever used any type of physical force on my son OR taken my clothing off in front of him). CPS was the one that took her to court, however, as his mother I also had to be present. No matter what I say - my ex-husband and his wife think I did this. I am not sure why, it says right in the paperwork that it was the school that alerted the police, who in turn alerted CPS, who got this case brought before a judge. It had literally nothing to do with me. But the fact that all of this happened has made his wife incredibly demeaning towards me when speaking to my son. My son remembers her restraining him, and when his dad asked him why he didnt like his wife, my son said that she scared him. When his dad said, "What can she do to make you feel better?" My son said, "I think if she apologized to me that would help." She refused to apologize, and says she did nothing wrong. So my son, and she, dug their heels in - and they simply do not get along.
My father passed 3 years ago in July, and I took care of him, as he did hospice at home. Shortly after that, my Nana had a serious stroke, which caused pretty advanced dementia. She was in a nursing home right away, and our family asked if I would be willing to move 45 minutes away and care for her. In return, I would receive some money in her will the other grandchildren would not be. I said yes, although I would have without the added incentive of the money. My ex agreed to my moving, with our son, 45 minute away, when i explained that at the end of this - I would have enough for a small down payment.
My Nana passed last July.
I will be receiving around $50,000.00 at the end of June. I live about 30 minutes north of NYC, a standard high ranch here starts at $850k. I can not afford this. Up by ex-husband, homes in a decent school district, start at around $325k, I also can not afford these.
My brother and his wife live down in NC. It is absolutely beautiful, and I love it there. I also take care of my physically disabled mother, and she lives with me. It would be such a benefit to have help from my brother and his wife with my mom should there be any type of emergency.
My son is very intelligent, he tests in the high 90th percentiles, and does all of the extracurricular STEM activities. He loves coding, robotics, science, etc. My brother is very high up in the tech field, and would be such an incredible person to be in my son's day to day life. The school in the district we are moving to is absolutely outstanding. I would be able to put a down payment on a small house that I would own, and be able to put on the line for my son to attend college if I needed to. I can also finish college there, as I did not finish college as I was scouted to model while in college and I took that opportunity, then got married, and had my son. Until my father got ill and coid hit, I ran my own business (wedding florals) which was enough to care for him and myself. When Covid happened, there was no work as there were no weddings. Then my dads health took a turn and I cared for him, and then my Nana. Now -- we are here.
My ex does not want my son to attend college, as he does not feel it is fair for him to pay child support if he is in college (he does not out right say that is why, but through many conversations' about our son post-high school its become pretty clear why). He is pushing trade school endlessly with my son. My son has never bonded with his dad, and simply becomes frustrated, because he does not want to be a plumber (for some reason that's what his dad pushes) he wants to work in the sciences, specifically research. UNC is under 9k a year if you live in state, but over 35k coming from out of state, its a very solid college.
I told my ex several weeks ago that I wanted to move to NC, and the many reasons why it made sense. He initially understood, and said he would be upset not to see his son regularly, but that he understood my reasoning. He agreed that I had done a wonderful job raising our son, and that he was intelligent, kind, empathetic, had never been in any kind of trouble, and overall - is a really great kid. We talked about flying him back to NY in the summers.
Then my ex-husband said, "Well, I have other options here. Why doesn't he live with my Dad and my sisters? Dad retired, he has time. That way I can still see him every other week."
I said, "I think removing our son from me would be traumatic to him. I have been the day-to-day constant in his life. He is who he is because from day one I have put him, and his priorities first. Also, thats a big ask of your family - raising a kid is a massive investment of time and money. I don't think that is a feasible option, Are you saying that YOU would like to raise him?"
At first he said no. Then he said it was a possibility. I brought up that his school district has had several stabbings this year and a school wide "brawl." (The schools words, not mine.) His school district has a massive issue with gangs, and our son is just about the whitest kid with the least amount of street smarts you would ever meet. He was in this school district, in the middle school when I lived in that town, and he was in AP classes, so was pretty insulated, he kind of travelled from class to class with the same 60 kids that were in AP classes. But his last week there, he was grabbed by his sweatshirt and repeatedly thrown into a bank of closed lockers. He isn't sure why, nor was the administration.
So, my ex-husband said that he would go by what my son decided. He said, "Well, he is old enough to have some input on this. Let's talk to him." We brought our son into the conversation, and my ex-husband went through the options, "You could move very far away with Mom, and I wouldn't get to see you, OR you could live with Papa and the Aunties - and the other option is you could live with me and my wife."
Our son was clear on not wanting to attend the school in my ex-husbands district, and said that if he couldn't live with me, he guessed the next best thing would be Papa's, but that he wanted to stay with mom.
Then today, I heard from my ex, saying he wanted to go to court. After we spoke this is what I walked away with:
  1. Because a handful (maybe 5 or 6 times?) of times in my sons life, visitation was not possible- he says I withhold our son. I take great offense to this, as I feel I spent years begging him to see our son more. Our son has chronic staph infections after almost dying at 4 years old from going septic with MRSA (I am not sure how he caught it, he came back from an overnight with his dad and his chin was swollen 6x its normal size). The ONLY time I have said he can't go is when he either a. In the hospital for several days b. JUST out of the hospital and in bed sick/recovering or C. When the doctor calls in the creams and antibiotics and prescribed bed rest. When our son is sick, he wants be at home, in his own bed.
  2. He does not want to go to court to obtain custody of our son. He simply does not want me to leave.
  3. When i explained I really could not afford to live here anymore, and that it would require him helping me out on the difference from a 1 bedroom to a 2 (for our son) he said absolutely not. (the home I currently renting is being sold this summer, I have looked around and prices have risen so high, that a studio in the school district is over $2,000. A studio. And i have my mom here too.)
  4. His family is not willing to finish the raising of our son. I did speak with them about a week ago to let them know we were moving, and they were absolutely thrilled, despite being sad they would not see our son as regularly, As my SIL said, and I am paraphrasing, "I am SO happy for you guys, I think this is going to be so incredibly good for you guys. And being near your family is so important. You have always made decisions as you go that give him a better and better life. I am so happy for you."
  5. When I said, "You have known I am struggling, even just feeding him has been hard, He is almost 6 feet tall, and eats 3 meals a day plus in between snacks'. I don't want to feed him ramen, I want to make sure he gets veggies and meat, and eats a balanced diet. You have known I sometimes ask for child support a day early to go to the grocery store, and that the child support doesn't even cover his food - much less clothing, shoes, school supplies, rent, electricity, water, him going to the movies with his friends, video games... it doesn't even cover his grocery bill. And I recently saw that you got a very significant promotion around 2 years ago, and another VERY significant promotion very recently. Did you ever stop and think, 'She doesn't know I am making more money, so she isn't asking for more child support. But I know she is having a hard time with the costs of raising our son...?" He didn't say anything. And that hurts. It hurts because I can not imagine witholding anything from our son. Every single penny that I have goes toward shim, I honestly can not remember that last time I spend anything on myself.
I could not leave my son in NY. Just so everyone is aware, my entire life for almost 15 years has been about what is best for him.
And I am not sure if this is important - but my ex-husband's new wife, and my son do not get along. His new wife is very verbally aggressive with our son, very pushy (mostly about the trade school thing) and I have gotten dozens of phone calls from my son hiding in the bathroom crying, begging me to come get him. Which I never have, I just call his dad and ask him to please step in and try and make peace.
Is it possible that a court would force me to stay in NY state, despite the fact that my family support is in NC, our child is almost 15 and is very open about not wanting to live with his father, as he never has, and does not feel welcome when he is at his dad's house? I really, really have an opportunity to better our lives, and I won't get another opportunity in this lifetime to be able to own a small home of our own. It is such an amazing school district for him, especially as he is so incredibly driven academically. I'll have my family down the road, and this small inheritance, in conjunction with my moms inheritance from her mother will do absolutely nothing here in NY, but will go so far down south.
What do I do? Do I call the courthouse and request something? Lik.. I am not even sure what to request? I'm assuming something along the lines of a change of address with my son? Is this something legal aid could help me with? My ex-husband does well financially, as he has been fully focused on his career for the last 14 years, while my focus has been on our son. So while we live in a nice house, I absolutely do not have an extra few thousand dollars to go to court. And it would absolutely break my heart to go through the inheritance I have, as that is the whole reason I am able to move.

2024.05.13 09:18 Aliximery I'm 16 and feel like I'm wasting my life

I know that the title sounds ridiculous and that many will say that 16 is still very young. But for some reason it doesn't feel like it. I feel like I'm just constantly trying to catch up with time. I don't have anything that I'm passionate about. Sometimes I'll get intrested in something, daydream about becoming some great next thing , and then the flame just burns out. I'm so jealous of people who have a passion that they can stick to. I know many people around me who have something like this, and I feel like I'm behind them because I don't. In fact, many people in my class are very accomplished people. Two girls in my girls do ballet and dance in a theatre. Another girl in my class does competitive dancing. A guy from my class plays football and is also a math genius. Another plays tennis and travels a lot. I have a few people in my class who draw. Some sing and play instruments. A girl from a higher class that I'm acquaintances with plays in theatre. Another girl that I know, was awarded last year by our city as the most accomplished student. She was also the school president last year, was a part of the debates team, and a part of youth city council.
I could probably list more but I think you get it. Everyone around me is so accomplished, has something that they are passionate about while I feel like I have nothing. Whenever I find something that I think must be it, I end up losing intrest after awhile.
I took swimming classes for about 7 years. ( wasn't really something that I was passionate about. It's my parents that signed up ). I have tried learning a new language but always end up quitting for some reason. Currently I can only my native and English.
I used to draw a lot back when I was like 10/11 and watched a lot of tutorials on yt but nothing ever came out of it. I kind of stopped being intrested in it and now I'll draw something once every few months.
I also wanted to write my own book. ( I kind of still want to tbh ). But I feel like I can never form a good enough idea. In terms of writing, I also songwrite sometimes. I don't do it super often. And I'm more often than not dissatisfied with what I write.
Took guitar classes for about 2 years. I quit as the classes focused mainly on playing classical music. While I just wanted to know enough to be able to play the songs that I like. Right now, I barely play. I go through phases when I play guitar non stop for a few weeks , put it down and then won't even touch it for the next few monts. Not to mention my playing is extremely mediocre.
I used to sing too. I was in the church choir from when I was 8 up to when I was 10. I started taking singing classes when I was in 5th grade and resigned this year. It was a hard decision but next year I'll be starting the IB program. And I know from my teachers , and people in classes above me how hard it can be. I'll be taking chemistry, biology and english for HL and math , native and psycholoy for SL. And unfortunately with chemistry, I've heard that the two teachers we have are not the best at teaching. Which means that I'll have to study a lot on my own. This year I already struggled with trying to with mingling singing with all my school work and other responsibilities. And at the end decided that it's just not possible for me.
I was in the debates team this year. We managed to get second place in a national tournament. Unfortunately, I also won't continue next year. This was extremely time consuming and caused me a lot of stress. And next year I want to focus mainly on my studies. Maybe I'll take part in some single competitions but I'm not too sure about it yet.
Everything that I do just seems to ends after sometime. And it just frustrates me so much. I always wanted to be an accomplished person. When I was little, I used to be a " performer ", that's what my family memebrs always tell me. I would sing, dance, recite poems and make my own plays for them too watch. I remember some of them joking that I'm going to be a star. From people in my elementary I heard similiar things.
Nowdays I just hear that I used to be more out there. That I don't sing anymore. That I'm not as loud as I used to be. Sometimes I think that the reason why I can't get into anything is because my true passion is just trying to impress other people.
After I graduate, I'd like to study medicine to become a psychiatrist. My dream univeristy is Oxford. Which I know sounds ridiculous, knowing that I don't have the money to pay for the tution. I've heard of something called a full ride scholarship. Which apparently covers all the school expenses. But I've also heard that it's almost impossible to get. And that you really need to stand out to be able to get it. So as much as I want it, I know that it's probably not possible for me.
Right now, I'm trying to learn japanese. And I've also been thinking recently of learning how to figure skate. I'm not thinking of signing up to any class, I just want to try it on my own so I won't have anything obligations. I'm hoping that this time it'll work
I know this post is all over the place probably but I just wanted to say everything that's on my mind.

2024.05.13 08:13 frustratedandanxious My friends are all suddenly getting separated, having relationship issues. Is love that fickle?

I (F32) have three friends (same age) who were really close to me in different phases of my life.
I met friend A in University. She married her highschool sweetheart. All through University all she wanted to do was get married to her boyfriend. They were so in love. They had been dating for 10 years when they got married. Her in laws were not much in favour of the relationship because they thought their son deserves better. Switch to today, 6 years after marriage, my friend told me that her husband has clearly told her that he no longer feels any love for her. She is a stay at home wife. They don't have kids. Husband is a decent person. He said he'll continue supporting her financially. Offered to buy her a house where she can start afresh but wants to stay away from her because he "want's to live peacefully". And he apparently has "guilt" of not being a good son. He always was good to his parents just didn't marry someone they'd approve of/ did not treat his wife like they'd want him to (badly).
Friend B is my highschool best friend. Extremely good natured, was really good at studies. Has a good job. She met her husband in college. His family also did not approve of her. They were also very much in love. They dated for 5 years before they got married. They are married for 5 years now, have a baby. Her in laws live in the same city and are a source of distress. Husband was more supportive of her earlier but now picks fights with her. The other day when we were talking and she was really upset and frustrated, she said that the biggest mistake she ever made is marrying this guy. They are not breaking up/ getting a divorce and appear to be alright most of the time, but the thing that she said stayed with me.
Friend C was my first friend ever from kindergarten. We grew apart later because of being in different cities etc. So we are not really very close now but we still are good friends. Last I met her was a year ago. She was newly married to a guy whom she had met through family acquaintances. Both the families approved of the wedding. I just found out that she's getting a divorce (they were married only for a year or so). The guy and his family turned out to be bad, things had gotten ugly, they were trying to extort money (I don't know the details because she has not talked about this personally). We still like each other's stories on Instagram but I don't think she knows I know about her divorce and I don't want to say anything that would make her uncomfortable/ sad.
All these things hitting me one after another make me wonder if love really fades away so fast? I have been married to my husband for almost 2.5 years and we dated for 6 years before that. I love him very much and find myself more in love with time. I cannot imagine one day just falling out of love/ growing sick of each other. But everything happening around me makes me question love.

2024.05.13 02:22 Unhinged_Appricot21 “WOF’s lack of depth frustrates me”: 39 queries and ideas

Original post: https://www.reddit.com/WingsOfFire/s/cEBdWfjUbB
My last post criticized Tui’s shallow writing and lack of notable improvement throughout the series. This post is meant to be the constructive half of my criticism by posing 39 queries and ideas that would help make the world of Wings of Fire feel more substanced, varied, distinct, and nuanced.
Since I received comments on my previous post about fanfiction and its capacity to add depth to a franchise, feel free to steal any of these ideas and write about them. Or, if you’ve got any good ideas that you’re willing to share, comment them below. Let’s craft some stories worth telling.
  1. SeaWings hunt sharks solo as a part of their coming-of-age rite.
  2. RainWing names are chosen by the grandmother.
  3. RainWings value music. All dragonets are taught musical instruments as a necessary part of their curriculum.
  4. The IceWing kingdom is divided into territories each ruled by a lady. Dragons who have done an exceptional service to the crown may be awarded a territory.
  5. The IceWing Assembly is composed of the aforementioned territorial rulers. Membership is hereditary. The Assembly runs some of the day-to-day business of the kingdom by reviewing legislature, managing affairs of public interest, and advising the queen. However, they can also check the power of the queen by forming coalition against her and blocking or passing laws.
  6. An IceWing princess needs to do more than just kill her mother to gain the throne, or she may not keep it for long: she must also make allies and supporters within the Assembly. An unpopular queen may find it difficult to exercise her power with a reticent Assembly.
  7. NightWings like composing riddles and poems; it is a favored pastime. They would gather in groups and make games out of guessing riddles, constructing verse, and engaging in friendly competition.
  8. There are few to no trees on the island, a scarcity of animals, and the NightWings don’t trade; thus they have taken to molding clay tablets, carving into them with a stylus, and firing them in a kiln to harden. parchment is as rare and coveted as gold.
  9. NightWings were known historically for their metallurgy, so advanced that it seemed mystical to other tribes. Legends speak of their immunity to and mastery over fire, their ability to mold metals with their talons, and the magic associated with metalcraft.
  10. The NightWings invented Damascus steel, which allowed them to forge weapons of exceptional quality. Knowledge of its craft was kept a tribe secret, and the NightWings kept their monopoly on it for thousands of years until Darkstalker forced the NightWings to flee their homeland, and the art was forgotten.
  11. Why is the royal challenge so prevalent across tribes? Why can only females challenge? How did it begin in the first place?
  12. The MudWing royal family employs seniority succession, in which the throne is passed to the monarch’s younger sibling and not their children. Both male and female royalty can rule.
  13. SandWing inheritance is a type of matrilineal system in which a male’s possessions are handed to his sister’s sons.
  14. What is the currency of the dragon world? Is it based on a gold standard? Does each tribe employ its own currency, is there a universal currency, or is there both an international and local currency for each tribe?
  15. A NightWing is not given a name at birth; it is earned through their extended family and friends.
  16. MudWings forge coins with a hole in the center, allowing them to string ropes of coins along their necks.
  17. The HiveWing takeover of the LeafWings was subtle and gradual: the LeafWing queen remained in power as a puppet and the tribe did not formally integrate with the HiveWings, instead existing as a vassal state. Over time, they lost theirs rights and power.
  18. Firebreathing tribes consider the ability a divine gift and a powerful kind of magic. It allowed dragonkind to ascend their animal states, purge the scavengers, and become civilized peoples who cook their food, build advanced infrastructure, and produce all kinds of advanced technologies. Firebreathing dragons consider themselves inherently superior to non-firebreathers, blessed with a divine right. Fire is associated with truth, clarity, and expansion of the mind.
  19. When a LeafWing hatches, he is given a protective necklace made of silver, meant to ward evil spirits. He grows up within a cohort of same-sex dragonets who work and learn together. Adulthood is not marked by age, but by initiation, which can only occur when the right signs are read in the natural world. A dragon 100 years of age would still be considered a dragonet, and unable to choose a mate, if he has not been initiated.
  20. When a HiveWing hatches, he is presented to the family matriarch, who formally decides whether to accept him into the family.
  21. Tribeless dragons reject the kingdoms. Lone wolves or pack hunters, they roam the continent in small bands, sometimes coexisting with the tribes, sometimes coming into conflict, and often selling their services as messengers or mercenaries.
  22. Why are all the tribes so isolated? Why do they not engage in international trade?
  23. Trade guilds are made up of tribeless dragons who have found a lucrative business in trade. Since the tribes are largely xenophobic and like to avoid each other, these guilds act as an intermediary: they roam the continent, acquiring goods from one tribe and trading them with another. From this great influx of wealth emerged two or three trade empires, geographically insignificant but titans in money-making. They’ve become so powerful that they’re forcing the kingdoms to compete economically in new ways.
  24. Do dragons have access to banking institutions? Do they take out credit or write checks? Does an international banking service exist?
  25. How about a postage system? Domestic, international, or both? How would it work?
  26. SeaWings believe in reincarnation, and that deceased family members will hatch into the same family over and over. When a dragonet hatches, he is examined for any resemblance to a deceased family member, and may be named after said dragon.
  27. The RainWings’ most lucrative trade is in spices and herbs.
  28. Do dragons pay taxes?
  29. Why is there no form of gender or class stratification in any tribe besides HiveWings and SilkWings? If only females can become monarchs, does this matriarchal mindset extend anywhere else in society? Are families matrilineal? Do females have rights or privileges over males?
  30. On that note, why are there no gender roles either?
  31. What sorts of jobs exist with a kingdom? How would a carnivorous diet affect livelihood, economy, and society?
  32. Brittlescale is a condition which may arise due to undernourishment or malnutrition. Signs of the ailment include dull, malformed scales, scales that crack easily, and loose scales.
  33. Dueling is a common method of defending and proclaiming one’s strength and honor. Just as princesses challenge queens, common dragons will duel to prove their worth.
  34. How do dragons understand medicine and the body?
  35. SilkWing traditional garments are made of silk. Silk is one of the most precious and coveted products in the kingdom.
  36. Spiders feature heavily in SilkWings culture and mythology as craftsmen and weavers.
  37. SandWing venom is a neurotoxin. It can be drawn from the tail, distilled to increase its potency, applied to weapons, or made into a powder. Alternatively, it can be diluted into a drug used in anxiety medication and to treat insomnia.
  38. Do dragons modify their bodies? Do they wear piercings, tattoos, or body paint?
  39. How have dragons evolved over 2000 years? What biological, social, cultural, religious, political, economic, and technological advancements or regressions have taken place?
Edit: to the replies commenting that many of these have already been mentioned in the books and that I should’ve finished them: I should clarify that I was trying to prompt the sort of thinking that would lead to deeper worldbuilding. Instead, I have committed the same failure which I accused of Tui, that being to sketch and to prod but never to define or populate. I realize now that I should’ve selected fewer entries and expanded on them thoroughly to prove my point. I apologize.

2024.05.12 21:35 Nice-Comedian-1034 AITAH because I stopped talking to my obese friend due to her behaviour and constant bodyshaming

My friend (24F) and I (F24) have been friends since kindergarten. She doesn't have many friends, and I might be her closest one. I've never met her friends, if she has any, and when we socialize, it's usually with my friends. She rarely talks about anyone, not even her classmates or colleagues, and if she does, it's usually to complain about them.
The issue is that my friends don't really like her. It's because she lacks some common knowledge but acts otherwise. For instance, she asked my boyfriend, who works in finance, if they have some kind of security. She asked another friend, who works in IT, if she works with computers and then talked about buying a pink phone just because it was pink. If it were just a few instances, it would tolerate that, but it happens every time she speaks.
She's overweight and claims she never drinks or smokes because she cares about her healthand she could not imagine drinking like us. We usually go for drinks once a month. So, I've decided not to bring her along with my friends anymore.
Another issue is her lifestyle. While I'm not a fitness guru, I do work out and have an active lifestyle. My friends and I go to festivals, sightsee, and hike, which she finds impossible due to her inability to walk long distances. We found about that out when she complained about not doing things together and feeling excluded. So we took her on a trip to a nearby castle involving a short walk 20 mins and stairs, she got tired after walk that took us 1 hour and didnt participate on stairs part.
I'm a recreational swimmer, and after she found out, she suggested we swim together. She persuaded me to go and told me that I should prepare because she is fats swimmer. However, she lied did twice less laps (I do not swim extra fast) and wanted to leave after just 20 minutes.
She also shames me for being skinny (I'm muscular but have enough body fat for an average woman). She claims I can eat whatever I want and fit into everything. When I mention watching what I eat due to my slow metabolism, she accuses me of lying because she saw me eat a whole steak and vegetables. Once, she even told my brother, who works out regularly and eats a lot, that he's too skinny.
What she doesn't realize is that she often sends me pictures of her eating cakes and trying random snacks "just once," then claims she barely eats anything and usually eats only in the evening after fasting all day.
The final straw for me was that she never wishes me anything good. When I got a great job with a nice salary, her response was why she is not getting even more. When I found money on the street, she said I'm always lucky and she is not. When a dog approached me instead of her, she said she likes dogs more than me. All I hear from her are complaints, and I'm honestly losing my sanity, so I stopped talking to her after she interrupted me for the tenth time in one week.
She uses phrases like "I needed to relax" or "I deserve more time off," but I don't know what stresses her out so much that she needs to reward herself every day. I mean she is very sensitive and I cannot tell her anything negative because she starts apologise for her behaviour and tells me she does not like confrontations.
I'm unable to help her with healthy lifestyle tips or anything else. She asks for help, I give advice, and then she does the opposite and complains about the consequences. It feels like I'm talking to a wall.
After cutting her off, she accused me of being fatphobic and a bad friend for not supporting her during her toughest times in life. She even told her father, who complained to my parents. Yes, we both come from a small vilage.
My mother advised me to talk to her because she does not have much friends and it would make peace with his father.
So Am I the AH if I cut her off, she is unstable has no friends probably, very lonely and I am unsure what she would do to herself after we will not in contact
Tldr: my ex friend requires to keep our friendship going even though I am burned out because of her constat jealousy and comments on my body.
