2024.05.14 04:45 Puzzleheaded-Dark-80 Islam. It is about Quran and Islam

https://www.youtube.com/live/9PAhFhRRFIQ?si=auzIYFiAjhGBo783 All of planet earth must convert to Islam. All humans, peoples, nations, countries, and all others must become Muslim. I am Muslim. Islam is last religion. Holy Quran is holy scripture of God. Quran is last scripture of God. God revealed Quran to prophet Muhammad. In order to find out a holy scripture is correct you must see Torah, Gospel, Enjil, and other scriptures don’t go against holy Quran. They are false If they go against holy Quran. Holy Quran was not edited. Holy Quran is true scripture of God. Holy Quran is true. Gospel, Enjil, Torah, and other scriptures were edited. Only true religions are Islam, Shia Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. All other religions are false religions. All prophets were Muslims. But they changed the names to Christianity and Judaism after prophets. Muslims believe Prophet Muhammad was the last Prophet. It is based on Aye Khatam Al-Anbia in Holy Quran. But in Aye Khatam Al-Anbia in Holy Quran my name Makan ماکان comes before the name of Prophet Muhammad. God spoke to me. It means I am Makan Abazari The Messenger of God. Study holy Quran in language you understand. You must understand meaning of Quran. Also read Quran in Arabic. Recite Quran. But make sure to read Quran in your language. I made many miracles with holy Quran. I changed climate. I made hurricanes, Superstorms, Nor’easter, ten thousand tornados, earthquakes, superstorms, and other things by holy Quran. I did also before then. I also made hurricanes, Superstorms, Nor’easter, ten thousand tornados, earthquakes, superstorms, and other things by my codes. I also made other miracles by Holy Quran. Everytime I recited Holy Quran many miracles happened. Everytime I recited Holy Quran Climate was changed. Many other miracles took place. We only recognize Islam, Shia Islam, Christianity, and Judaism as true religions. All other religions are false. For example, Brahmaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikh, and other religions are false. All of people of the world must become Muslims.

2024.05.14 03:54 WarMar6094 Recruiting for HOIV Mod: The American Epoch

I am recruiting coders, GFX artists, and writers for the mod. As of now, we have 2 GFX artists, 2 coders (including me), and 1 writer. We are always looking to expand the team and would accept more modders. We are in the early stages of development. I am primarily looking for coders, as we have more content planned than our small team can handle.
My discord is gamerdoglover
____________________________________________________
The year is 1966 and the world is in balance as 3 factions contest across the globe in a 3-way cold war. The United States, an authoritarian democracy led by Gerald L. K. Smith, leads the Global Treaty Organization, a faction against the Warsaw Pact and Democratic League. It became the successor of the Allied Powers after the German Reich was defeated in 1943, and the Japanese Empire in 1944. The Soviet Union, led by Leonid Brezhnev, leads the Warsaw Pact to the East. As the leader of the communist world, the Soviets vie to expand the Revolution across the globe against the "capitalist pigs." In Asia, India, the leader of the Democratic League, is led by Jawaharlal Nehru. India's goal is to work with its allies in the Democratic League to restore democracy to the world and spread freedom. This careful balance is at a breaking point, as both sides grow closer to war. One event can cause a chain reaction and start a fire no one wants to spark. Yet, despite the threat posed by war, all 3 of the sides vie to expand their influence or ideology across the world.

2024.05.14 02:07 ia_desu Korean Language Exchange Partner Searched

Hey guys,
as stated in the title, I am looking for a language exchange partner for korean. I know there are some apps like hellotalk to also find language exchange partners directly, but had bad experience in the past so I wanted to give it a go here.
I am required to take a non indo-germanic language at some point throughout my bachelor degree and was strongly considering korean for it. I do want to move to korea eventually for my masters and/or phd since I will be specialising in prehistoric archaeology of east asia/ or the korean peninsula. Many of the textes on these subjects are only available in korean so it is the most reasonable to actually take this language for university classes too. The issue is that according to many people I have spoken with, the korean I course at my university seems to be tremendously difficult and the teacher not that great. I self-studied grammar and a bit vocabulary when I was a teenager and did a language course in Seoul, but lost most of my limited knowledge between then and now. I find grammar very enjoyable bur have troubles memorising vocabulary if not used regualrly.
For a language exchange partner, I could offer both german and english (native german speaker and between C1 and C2 in english). Age wise I would prefer someone in their twenties since it would be easier to connect with and I'm in my beginning-mid twenties as well. Ideally I would prefer to be friends that generally have similar interests since I think learning through shared activities and hobbies would be much more beneficial then just sitting down to study by book every time. My interests are in gaming, anime, webtoons, going to the gym/martial arts, mangas, series, music (especially indie pop) and museums/archaeology/flea markets.
If this sounded intetesting to you, I would be happy to see your message :)

2024.05.14 01:14 Evilkenevil77 Just Turned Down For My Dream Job. Now What?

Male, 27, BA in Foreign Languages and Cultures, BA in East Asian Studies (Double Major Chinese and Japanese, Double Minor Spanish and French), Graduate Certificate in Chinese-American Studies, 6 months professional job experience.
Hey there. The job search for me out of college has been exceptionally brutal. I won't get into the weeds about it, but I just spent 2 and a half years waiting on potentially being hired for my dream job, only to find out I have been determined unsuitable for the job. To say I'm crushed would be an understatement. I'd go on about how devastated I am, but no one needs to hear all that. As you can see from above, I'm multilingual, and was primarily looking for jobs relating to Translation. The job I'd like to have would have me working with the languages I've studied so hard to learn, and would utilize my expertise in East Asia. That has proven to not only be very difficult due to a lack of job postings, but my lack of experience seems to be hampering any ability to even be remotely considered.
I have explored the options my degree provides me with but have so far come to these realizations:
Interpreting: Depends on your level of experience, and where you live. There is no agreed upon standard of certification for interpreting, and it varies from state to state, and sometimes company to company. Generally requires some kind of certification and specialized training, which I have not yet received, along with experience demonstrating your expertise. You can land a high level job somewhere like the UN, or with a government or other company or agency, but the majority of jobs are freelance, with income highly variable.
Translation: There aren't as many job postings for this as you might think. Many are remote jobs, and those that do exist do not pay well (most are $35,000 a year), even for languages that are rare or in high demand. Many translation agencies outsource out-of-country, and thus have no desire or need for domestic translators, and usually only require the services of translation agency management jobs that do not actually require language skills whatsoever, such as being a liaison between clients, overseeing translations, etc. Some require ATA certification, which is a difficult requirement to meet, needing to pay a $500 per language fee annually, along with taking a test each year, for someone who has been unemployed for a long time now. There is the freelance route as well, but it too is highly variable, and success is not guaranteed. I would likely need to start an LLC to prevent legal issues due to lack of experience if I decided to go all-in on freelancing.
Military: This is an option I am still considering, but it has several drawbacks. It is a 5 year commitment minimum, without the freedom to say where I am to go, where I am to live, when I am to leave, no guarantees about what language I would study, or what job I would be performing, and boot-camp. The military provides absolutely no guarantees, irrespective of what a recruiter says, and I may not actually be suitable depending on a few factors (physical stature, background, etc.). If I change my mind, there would be absolutely no turning back. Lastly, the military itself is not guaranteed to accept me. However, the upside is the potential for a very high paying job out of the military when my service is complete. Some jobs pay up to $120,000 a year.
Government: 2 and half years (no, I'm not kidding), and I have nothing to show for it. I've done this route definitively, I simply do not have the energy, mental fortitude, and patience to try again.
Teaching: This is an option I am seriously considering, but it would require me to go back to school. Ideally I would like to be a Professor of Chinese, or East Asia Studies. I am $65,000 in debt, and I would be adding at least another $30,000 to that to get a PhD. I'm also unsure of where to start, and what programs to look into and apply at. Even after all of that effort and work, I may only make $40,000 a year, though I would likely enjoy the job.
Analyst: Many of my colleagues who I studied with have gone onto perform Advisory or Analyst roles, and most are doing well for themselves. This is a broad category of Risk, Financial, International, and other Analyst positions that don't directly have to do with foreign language per se, but use it as a major skill. I have attempted dozens of times to apply to various positions, but without experience, I have found I am nearly always turned down even before I get an interview.
Cryptologic Linguist: Without a Security Clearance, this is a job that is usually impossible to apply to.
These are the major options, but of course there may be many others. I'm not sure what to do or what job to apply for. There are many directions I could go in, but I'm starting to feel like I don't even know how to apply for a job anymore.
TLDR; What jobs should I look for now given my skills, experience, and degrees? Am I being too limited or unrealistic in my job search? How do I look for a job?
I'm totally devastated, and I don't know what to do anymore. Any advice at all would be appreciated.

2024.05.14 01:12 feurigel_ Hytale will be highly multiplayer focused, f2p and a Roblox competitor targeted at the Chinese market. Here’s why.

Please don’t feel attacked by this post. Im not saying that this would be good for us or the game. This is just a theory I have on why Riot bought Hytale Studios.
TL;DR Considering Riot‘s previous strategy, I think it is not likely that they are interested in publishing just another survival sandbox rpg game. Hytale promised alot about extremely customizable (moddable) multiplayer servers, capturing the essence of the Minecraft server ecosystem without its limitations. This is likely what captured Riot‘s interest because of the very promising and proven concept of gaming platforms where games are created by independent developers(users). They will be able to compete with Roblox because they could be a much more developer friendly alternative (practically and financially) and are much more likely to be allowed in China due to Hytale Studios being owned by a Chinese company (Riot is owned by Tencent). A good base game (story mode?) will be a part of Hytale to pull players and developers into the ecosystem initially and create charm but it will not be the main focus.
Riot‘s strategy. Moving into various multiplayer gaming niches that have a proven formula, an existing player-base, generate constant money inflow, „low“ initial investment and competitors that can be dethroned. All this while specifically targeting the east asian market, making their art style, gameplay and monetization appealing to the average east-asian gamer and acceptable for the Chinese government. (Excluding games published by Riot forge because it was discontinued)
We have been seeing this strategy with League of legends, legends of runeterra and valorant But most notably team fight tactics.
While tft isn’t a big deal anywhere else it is a very big deal in east Asia. specifically targeted at the Chinese market where auto-chess or strategy mobile games in general dominate the whole industry. It was released as „Battle of the golden spatula“ and is featured within the top grossing list in the Chinese appstore charts since.
Why Roblox and why China? Roblox is (in theory) an extremely profitable concept because the developers don’t need to invent, code or maintain the games on their platform themselves. It is also a proven concept and has a gigantic player-base with 70million daily active players. Roblox also has a lot of areas that could be improved significantly especially when it comes to the treatment of their independent developers that are crucial for the whole idea.
Those are already very promising factors for Riots strategy but heres the reason why I came up with the theory in the first place: Roblox is not available in China and Riot is owned by Tencent. Nor are there any games with the same concept available in China. This means there is a gigantic demand vacuum for this type of platform. Roblox has tried to launch in China but it turned out to be a very very difficult task because of its decentralized nature and the ccp’s strict regulations. They knew it would be destined to fail when published by an US corporation alone so they created a Chinese version called „Luobu“ and sold 49% to Tencent to help them be allowed there in the first place. Though Luobu was taken offline in 2021 and a rerelease is questionable.
Tencent has very good ties to the Chinese government and their games are much much more likely to be allowed in china and also a lot faster (it takes multiple years for western games to be even considered). Hytale(studios) is owned 100% by Tencent.

2024.05.14 00:55 Slow_Replacement_710 What makes you feel better or worse?

2 months after an extreme food sickness in Southeast Asia in 2015 I woke up EXTREMELY fatigued, blood shot heavy eyes, miserable. Fast forward 9 years later and thats how i wake up nearly everyday. The extreme fatigue is the absolute worst.

I chronically have VERY swollen turbinates where I can barely get air through. For 3 years I just lived like that. It was extremely depressing. I have seen every single speciality of doctor, done every test you could think of, scans, allergy tests, 2 sinus surgeries with no relief at all.
In 2018 I started exercising more, doing lawn work, etc (basically being way more active). I realized my congestion would reduce when I was active and I wasn't as fatigued. I would then walk back inside sit down and within minutes my nose was congested to the point i couldn't get air through again so I'd be mouth breathing. Breathing like this and not getting oxygen to my brain of course makes me anxious, fatigued, depressed, etc.
The only things I've found that help me are being very active but of course I still have to work, sleep, drive, etc where I feel miserable because I can't breathe at all.

What does everyone do, take for supplements, etc to get them some relief?

2024.05.14 00:41 Ok-Strength448 36M PNW Interested in meeting interesting people

Greetings,
I live in the PNW of America. I travel regularly, lift daily, read anything that will teach me something new. I think many people barely live their lives, they are sucked into netflix and social media more than they are living in the world. Only boring people are bored, there is a world of books, places, and people to explore. Tons of people live like a houseplant. If this sounds about right, shoot me a message.
I would especially appreciate international folks messaging me. I have enjoyed my time in East Asia and would like to give South Korea a try in the near future. I also spent some time in South America last year and am thinking of aiming for Bolivia this winter. Others that have caught my attention lately are the Philippines, Indonesia, and North Africa. The goals of my travel is always to learn something new and expose myself to an environment that takes me out of my comfort zone.
Tell me about wherever you are from and convince me to add it to the travel list.
I am not really capable of maintaining a large number of relationships so my intention is short to medium term. If we really get along though I would be happy to keep talking.

2024.05.14 00:33 NonchalantNeighbor AP World Study Tips from a Teacher

I’ve been scrolling this sub for a few days and I see a lot of students panicking about the AP World Exam. Here are some tips from a teacher who has been teaching this course for the past decade.
  1. Make sure you understand the rubrics for the essays. -Use APE for the SAQs (answer, provide evidence, explain how the evidence supports your answer) -an intro and two strong body paragraphs will get you a solid score on the LEQ -you can get a 7 on the DBQ with only 4 docs if your writing is strong. -If something like HIPP confuses you, SKIP IT! Use your time getting other points.
  2. Focus less on memorizing dates and more on learning chronology.
  3. When going over vocabulary, think about the SPICE-T theme and unit/time period it goes with. Here’s a gimkit game with 400 ish words gimkit vocab
  4. At this point, focus on big events or trends. Causation is the skill that is tested the heaviest on the exam.
  5. Still freaking out? Here are 10 events you should be able to explain:
-Increase use of trade routes during 1200-1450
-Growing power of land based empires
-Columbian exchange
-Political Revolutions during 1750-1900 (focus on Haiti and Lat. Am)
-Industrialization in East Asia during 1750-1900
-Imperialism
-WWI
-Cold War
-Decolonization
-Globalization

2024.05.14 00:17 wfqejkqwefnwe Help Me Decide: Insta360 GO3 vs DJI Action 2

Hi, I’m fairly new to videography and action cameras in general but was looking to decide between these two for my first action camera. I’m mainly considering these two as opposed to something traditional like a GoPro as I’m way too self conscious to have a selfie stick in my hand.
The main thing holding me back from buying the GO is the video quality and some reviews of it being “toylike” and a gimmick. As for the DJI Action 2 the main thing is that theres no easy way to adjust it while its on my chest, and the weird larger form factor. (And also the lack of freeframe or other capabilities)
Some things to keep in mind…
These two seem so equally matched!
Please help :(

UK + IRELAND

PRYTHIAN
A combination of Prydain, the old Welsh name for Britain, and Brython, which translates to “Ancient Britons” from Welsh.
HYBERN
A riff of Hibernia, the Classical Latin name for Ireland.

Artist of Prythian map: P-dulcis on redbubble

ADDITIONAL EUROPEAN-PARALLEL LOCATIONS

ILLYRIA
The Ancient Greeks used the term Illyria to define a region in the western part of the Balkan Peninsula. The numerous peoples who populated those areas were known collectively as the Illyrians. The region itself is quite mountainous.
THE MIDDLE
May refer to the Midlands, the central part of England, though geographically the Prythian map places the Middle central to Prythian, not central to England; with the Prythian inclusion of Scotland, the Middle on Prythian maps is located further north than the actual Midlands of England.
UNDER THE MOUNTAIN
A potential nod to the Schiehallion, a cone-shaped mountain often referred to as the center of Scotland. It's name comes from the Gaelic Sìth Chailleann, meaning "fairy hill of the Caledonians." On the southwestern side of the mountain is said to lie the well-concealed Uamh Tom a' Mhòr-fhir, a cave serving as an entrance to the underworld.
As the Schiehallion lies in the middle of Scotland (the Night Court) and not the middle of mainland UK (Prythian), the Sciehallion could instead be representative of Ramiel.
THE WESTERN ISLES
May refer to the Outer Hebrides, also known as the Western Isles, which is an island chain off the west coast of mainland Scotland. They are also sometimes known as Innse Gall, a Gaelic term meaning "islands of the foreigners/strangers" which was originally used by mainland Highlanders when the islands were ruled by the Norse.
ACOTAR role: The Prison is located in the Western Isles.
THE PRISON
Though located in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland rather than the Outer, the Prison may be a nod to Beinn Shiantaidh, which is Scottish Gaelic for "holy mountain." It is located on the western side of the Island of Jura and is the second highest peak of the Paps of Jura.
Fun fact: Pap is of Old Norse origin and means breast.
VALLAHAN
Valhalla is the hall of slain warriors in Norse mythology, located in Asgard, where those who die in combat live in peace under the leadership of the god, Odin. They are said to dwell in Valhalla until the events of Ragnarök, where they will then march out to fight in aid of Odin against the jötnar, a type of being in Germanic mythology.
ACOTAR role: Vallahan is a faerie territory located in the northwest portion of the Continent.
ADRIATA
The Adriatic Sea is located in Southern Europe and separates the Italian Peninsula from the Balkan Peninsula. It contains more than 1,300 islands.
BOG OF OORID
The Oorid Lough is a freshwater lake in the west of Ireland.
CRETEA
Crete is the largest and southernmost island in Greece.
ACOTAR role: Cretea is where Miryam and Drakon's people lived following the War.
LAPPLUND
Lapland is a geographic region in Northern Fennoscandia which covers much of the Nordic countries. It is also a province of Sweden and the largest region of Finland.
ACOTAR role: Lapplund is where the Cauldron was hidden.
ITICA
Ithaca is an island featured in the Odyssey and was the island home of Odysseus. It is also a real island in Greece. The Kathara Monastery is located in Ithaca.
ACOTAR role: Itica is one of three temples where the feet of the Cauldron were hidden.
MONTESERE
Montserrat is a mountain range near Barcelona.
ACOTAR role: Montesere is a fae territory located in the Continent's NW and is considered generally wealthy. They allied with the loyalists in the War.
RAVENNIA
Ravenna is located in Northern Italy and was the capital of the Western Roman Empire.
ACOTAR role: Ravenna is a fae territory on the Continent and allied with the Loyalists during the War.
DUNMERE
Dunmere is a hamlet in Cornwall, England.
ACOTAR role: Dunmere is a town located within the Night Court, between Velaris and the sea.
NEVA
The Neva is the fourth-largest river in Europe and is located in northwestern Russia.
ACOTAR role: Neva is one of the largest human cities on the Continent and is where the Archeron sisters' father travels to trade.
SCYTHIA
The Scythians were an ancient Eastern Iranic equestrian nomadic people who migrated from Central Asia to the steppes of modern-day Ukraine and Southern Russia.
ACOTAR role: Scythia is one of the territories of the human lands on the Continent, ruled by Queen Vassa. They are said to be a horse loving people.
ROSEHALL
Rosehall is the name of a remote hamlet in the Scottish Highlands.
Fun fact: The 2nd Duke of Westminster acquired the Rosehall estate and his mistress at the time, Coco Chanel, redecorated the interior to her own liking. Winston Churchill, a close friend of the Duke, also visited the estate.
ACOTAR role: Rosehall is mentioned in ACOFAS and is theorized to be the place where Azriel's mother resides.

AFRICA-PARALLEL LOCATIONS

THE BLACK LAND
Black Land translates from Kemet, a popular ancient name for Egypt, which is derived from the color of the fertile black soil along the cultivated area of the Nile valley.
ACOTAR role: The Black Land is a region of the continent where human slaves were ruled over by a High Fae queen. Miryam and Drakon joined the mortals in the War and freed Miryam's people by crossing the desert and eventually the sea.
THE ERYTHRIAN SEA
The Erythraean Sea, originally an Ancient Greek geographical designation, has been used as a name for the Red Sea which lies between Africa and Asia.
ACOTAR role: Drakon used his magic to split the Erythian Sea.

ASIA-PARALLEL LOCATIONS

XIAN
Xi'an is the the most populous city in Northwest China snd the second most popular tourist destination in China.
ACOTAR role: Xian is a Fae territory on the Continent and allied with the Loyalists during the War. A large majority of the Dawn Court is made of Fae from Xian, including Thesan's mother. Feyre remarks that Amren may have molded her mortal body after their peoples.

May refer to Rask, a city in Iran, that serves as both capital of its county and district.
ACOTAR role: Rask is a Fae territory on the Continent and allied with the Loyalists during the War.

ADDITIONAL LOCATIONS

VELARIS
Possibly derived from the Latin vēlo*,* meaning "to veil, cover, wrap" along with "to hide, conceal" and "to clothe in." Could also derive from the Latin vēlum, meaning "to veil, curtain" and also indicates a tarpaulin acting as cover for outdoor spaces.
THE WALL
No singular reference, but the presence of a wall separating one race from another, often humans from mythical beings, is rife throughout history, mythology, and fantasy.
One from each category that has loose ties to ACOTAR: (1) Hadrian's Wall, ie the Roman Wall, a defensive fortification of the Roman province of Britannia. It spanned from coast to coast, cutting across the entire width of Northern England. (2) In Norse mythology, the Master Builder asking for the hand of the goddess Freyja as payment for constructing a wall around Asgard to defend the gods. (3) The English village of Wall in Neil Gaiman's Stardust, named after the wall separating the land of Faerie from the mortal realm, highly guarded and cautioned against for mortals seeking to pass through.
THE MOONSTONE PALACE
Romans linked moonstone to the moon goddess Diana (goddess of wild animals and the hunt) and Ancient Greeks linked it to their lunar deities Artemis, Hecate, and Selene.
SIDRA RIVER
Sidra is a name of Latin origin and means "Goddess of the stars" or "like a star."
RAMIEL
Ramiel is a fallen Watcher, a type of Biblical angel, one of the 20 Watchers that rebelled against God by mating with mortal women, therefore creating the Nephilim (Shadowhunters, anyone?). Ramiel means "God has thundered." Ramiel is sometimes conflated with Remiel, also known as Jeremiel, meaning "God shall have mercy," as is listed as one of the seven Holy Angels. He is the archangel of hope and is responsible for divine visions and guiding the souls of the faithful into Heaven.
POOL OF STARLIGHT
No plausible connection found, though there is a famous pool in Greek mythology—a pool Mnemosyne presided over in Hades, counterpart to the river Lethe. Dead souls would drink from Lethe to wipe their past lives from remembrance when reincarnated. Those who drank from Mnemosyne's pool remembered and halted their transmigration of the soul.
ATHELWOOD
Ethel (also aethel) is an Old English word meaning "noble." Athelwood can mean "noblewood."
ACOTAR role: Athelwood is Morrigan's estate located in the Night Court.
GOLLIAN MOUNTAINS
Göll is one of the named Valkyries from Norse mythology. Her name means "tumult," or "noise, battle."
ACOTAR role: The Gollian Mountains are where the Valkyries were slain during the War.
MYRMIDONS
In Ancient Greek mythology, the Myrmidons were an Ancient Greek tribe. In the Iliad, they are the soldiers commanded by Achilles. Myrmidon has also come to mean "a follower or subordinate of a powerful person, typically one who is unscrupulous or carries out orders unquestioningly."
ACOTAR role: The Myrmidons are a set of mountains serving as the border between the Day Court and the Night Court from which the Illyrians migrated.
CESERA
No direct reference found, but may allude to Caesarea, the name of numerous cities and locations throughout the Roman Empire.
ACOTAR role: Cesera is one of three temples where the feet of the Cauldron were hidden.
SANGRAVAH
No direct reference found (and I lost my mind searching for one). Closest I came to was the similarly sounding Angharad, a feminine Welsh name, long associated with Welsh royalty, history, and myth, including Arthurian legend.
ACOTAR role: Sangravah is one of three temples where the feet of the Cauldron were hidden.
GREENFIELD VILLAGE
No direct connection found, though Greenfield is the name of several villages of England.
ACOTAR role: Greenfield village is a neighboring village to where Feyre grew up and where Isaac Hale's wife is from.
WINDHAVEN CAMP
No connection found, though a separate Windhaven also appears in Tower of Dawn in the TOG series. Altun—Windhaven being the rough translation—is located in a three-peaked mountain range and is the home of Sartaq's hearth-mother and family.
Fun fact: Windhaven is the name of a science-fiction novel by George R. R. Martin and Lisa Tuttle following a group of humans who crash-landed on a foreign planet and learned to craft their own wings out of the spaceship wreckage.
THE WOLF'S DEN
No connection found, BUT fun fact: there is a named Wolf's Den castle in George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series (aka Game of Thrones) that now serves as a prison. "All the days were much the same inside the Wolf's Den, and any change was usually for the worse." A Dance with Dragons, Ch 29
ACOTAR role: The Wolf's Den is the name of the worst tavern in Velaris that Nesta is known to frequent.
SILVERSPRING CREEK
No plausible connection found, BUT fun fact: "Silver Springs" is a song written by Stevie Nicks, performed by Fleetwood Mac, and is so strongly ACOTAR-coded even my non-loving playlist-to-book self can't deny it. If you want more bread crumbles that SJM is a Stevie Nicks fan, "Rhiannon" and it's lyric origins have potential ties to the Rhiannon of TOG.
You could be my silver springBlue-green colors flashin'I would be your only dreamYour shinin' autumn ocean crashin'
Time cas t a spell on you*, but you won't forget me*I know I could have loved youBut you would not let me
ACOTAR role: Silverspring Creek is a stream running through Feyre's human village, near where she hunted rabbits.
STRYGA'S CASTLE
No direct reference found, but due to Stryga/the Weaver resembling a female demon akin to a vampire in Slavic mythology (see the Monster section above), it is possible Stryga's former home, before she was confined to her cottage, is reminiscent of Bram Stoker's 1897 Dracula and the Transylvanian Castle complete with three vampiric sister brides who entice men with their beauty and charm before proceeding to feed upon them.

The Night Sky

ARKTOS
Arktos, also written Arctus, means "bear" in Ancient Greek. Arktos was a centaur who fought against the Lapith spearmen. The Arktos Megale (aka Ursa Major, the Great Bear) is one of the original 48 constellations listed by Ptolemy who drew on earlier works by Greek, Egyptian, Babylonian, and Assyrian astronomers.
ACOTAR role: Arktos is one of the three regarded holy stars (the furthest left star) of the Illyrians and serves as part of the symbol for the Night Court. The echelon of Arktosian is reserved for Illyrians who survive the Blood Right but fail to reach Ramiel.
CARYNTH
May refer to Corinth, an ancient city that was one of the largest and most important of Greece, or Carinthia, the southernmost Austrian state in the Eastern Alps, noted for its mountains and lakes.
ACOTAR role: Carynth is one of the three regarded holy stars (the middle star) of the Illyrians and serves as part of the symbol for the Night Court. The echelon of Carynthian is reserved for Illyrians who scale the summit of Ramiel during the Blood Rite and are considered elite warriors.
ORISTES
Orestes (also spelled Orestes) means "stands on a mountain" and he is the subject of several Ancient Greek plays and myths concerning his madness and purification.
ACOTAR role: Orestes is one of the three regarded holy stars (the furthest right star) of the Illyrians and serves as part of the symbol for the Night Court. The echelon of Oristian is reserved for Illyrians who make it to the Ramiel during the Blood Rite but don't reach the top.
Locations not listed: A slew of various more minor locations have not been listed, including the Four Market Squares of Velaris, certain cottages and houses, and even the Ironcrest Illyrian war-camp.

THE CAULDRON
There are many magical cauldrons present in various mythologies, one being the Pair Dadeni in Welsh mythology, a magical cauldron able to resurrect the dead, and the coire ansic of Irish mythology, the cauldron of the chief god of the Tuatha Dé Danann, which never ran empty.
TRUTH-TELLER
Possibly inspired by Fragarach, an Irish mythological sword known as "The Whisperer" or "The Answerer." It was the sword of Nuada, the first high king; it was said that no one could tell a lie with Fragarach at their throat and that the sword inflicting wounds from which no one could recover.
THE HARP
May refer to the uaithne, the magical harp of the Dagda, the chief god of the Tuatha Dé Danann in Irish mythology. It could control men's emotions and change the seasons.
THE MASK
In Egyptian culture, death masks were designed to guide the spirits of those mummified into the next world.

Seen in a vision by Nesta via Lathys, which we now know to be the Horn, and may refer to the Gjallarhorn of Norse mythology, the sound of which is said to herald the beginning of Ragnarok.
ATARAXIA
Ataraxia, in Ancient Greek philosophy, was a state of calmness untroubled by mental or emotional disquiet, ie tranquility of the mind. It was considered the ideal mental state for soldiers entering battle.
ACOTAR Role: Nesta's Made sword.
GWYDION
Gwydion is a name meaning "born of the trees" and is the given name of Gwydion fab Dôn, a magician, hero, and trickster of Welsh mythology. Caer Wydion, the castle of Gwydion, was the traditional Welsh name for the Milky Way.
ACOTAR role: The Starsword and twin to Truth-Teller.
NARBEN
No direct reference found, though narben in German means "scar."
ACOTAR role: Narben is a lost sword from the Dread Trove.
OUROBOROS MIRROR
The ouroboros is an ancient symbol of a serpent or a dragon eating its own tale, first present in ancient Egyptian iconography and the Greek magical tradition, the term itself deriving from Ancient Greek. It has been used frequently and extensively throughout fantasy literature. It often symbolizes the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.
BOOK OF BREATHINGS
The Books of Breathing are a set of ancient Egyptian funerary texts that are intended to enable those deceased to continue their existence in the afterlife. It is a simplified form of the Book of the Dead.
VERITAS ORB

SYMPHONIA
Symphonia is Greek in origin and was used to denote a variety of musical instruments.
AMARANTHA'S NECKLACE AND RING (JURIAN'S FINGER AND EYE)
Jurian's finger bone and eye, kept by Amarantha, are reminiscent of relics and reliquaries, often religious in nature. Relics typically consist of the physical remains or personal affects of a saint and the reliquary is the container that holds them.
FAEBANE
Possibly inspired by wolfsbane (aka aconite or monkshood), a poisonous flower ancient Greeks would poison arrows and bait with to hunt wolves. It is lethal and often fatal and is an oft-used plant and poison within the fantasy genre.
Fun fact: In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Hamlet himself was killed with an aconite-laced blade.

DAEMATI
Potentially a combination of the Greek word dae (to give) and the concept of mati, labeled as "the evil eye" in Greek classical antiquity. Daemati may effectively mean "to give the evil eye."
THE WEAVER'S SONG
The Weaver's song, sung when Feyre was stealing Rhysand's ring from her cottage, is similar to "The Twa Sisters," a traditional murder ballad dating back to mid 17th century England. It tells of two sisters who travel down to a body of water where the older one pushes the younger one in. A harp or a fiddle is then made out of the murdered sister's body, which plays itself and sings about her murder.

2024.05.13 23:42 DerpAnarchist Do non-East Asians more commonly go off the assumption of a relationship between neighbouring you think?

Something that seems to be a common denominator outside of East Asia seems to be that people more commonly assume that people from a certain area share a common ancestor. For Europeans that might be because most of their neighbours are related to them, like how English, Dutch, Germans/Austrians and Scandinavians all speak a Germanic language and for the most part belong to the same language family.
This isn't true for Japanese, Chinese, Koreans though, but it's still commonly assumed by randos that they are related to another. This is a weird idea that probably never came to mind to most of them. Korean, Japanese and Chinese belong to phylogenetically unrelated language families.
If you ask them whether they think they're related to their neighbours, they might likely respond "sure, but aren't we all descended from Africa?". This seems like deflecting the question, but it probably is genuine. Like sure humans are related, but those three aren't. They have been around since prehistory basically not much different as Koreans, Japanese, Chinese and "didn't come from anywhere". They converged to become more (culturally) similar over time, while they are fundamentally different.
This is different from Indonesia for example where people did indeed diverge from a common ancestral group (Austronesians). For this reason ppl from SEA seem to sometimes think that Koreans and Japanese are related to another.

2024.05.13 23:30 Bene-dict [Online][5e][Fridays 8pmEST/5pmPST][LGBTQ+][20+][RP & Combat Balanced] 5 Players looking for a DM.

Hello! We are a group of five friends looking for a dungeon master. We are a mix of new and experienced dnd 5e players but all are very excited to start a new adventure.
We have folks from East Asia all the way to East Coast North America (and sometimes Europe) so Fridays are not negotiable for us, but we can play anytime between Friday 8pm to 3am EST/Friday 5pm to 12amPST/Saturday 10am to 5pmAEST. We anticipate the sessions to be 3-4 hours long.
We are looking for a campaign that can potentially become long term. We don't mind the setting, it can be Homebrew, Forgotten Realms, Eberron or whatever, as long as it is still medieval fantasy with magic for our peeps who wanna play wizards. We would like a mix of both combat and roleplay where the dm is willing to integrate our character backstories into the over-arching plot of the campaign. Political intrigue, drama, exploration and adventure is what we're looking for! Also, we are hoping to start the campaign at 3rd level so you can throw more than just goblins at us!
We use Discord for voice calls and most of us are familiar with using Roll20. Using D&dbeyond or whatever else you use for character sheets is also welcomed.
About our players: We are still deciding what we'd like to play but we have a Bard, a FightePaladin (they have something particular in mind which both of you can discuss privately), potentially a Triton Barbarian, a Wizard who would like to be a summoner and another Wizard who is more into the scribe aspect. And to seal the deal our second Wizard and I draw! We are all college students so it would be nice if we could get someone around the same age as us but if not that's okay.
If we sound like a good fit, please dm me on reddit and I can send you my discord and get you in touch with my group!

2024.05.13 22:09 Doubtfulaboutit Gulliver’s Elden Ring

Gulliver’s Elden Ring
After studying up on Hayao Miyazakis inspiration for Castle in the Sky (a likely inspiration for Farum Azula), I decided to do some more digging on the world of Gulliver’s Travels. This is a map an artist created of the world as described by Gulliver in the book. For those who don’t know, Gulliver’s journey includes real world locations (New Holand, aka Australia, Japan, and America) and made up ones (Laputa, Balnibarbi, Brobdingnag).
Some things to note: 1. New Holand looks just like The Weeping Peninsula. 2. Brobdingnag is where the giants live, and is the same location as where the mountain top of the giants would be. 3. Borneo is where Liurnia of the Lakes would be and is mostly water. 4. Laputa, likely the inspiration for FA, is described as being in the eastern region, like where FA is. 5. Balnibarbi, where Caelid would be, is said to be a land that has been ruined and eroded. 6. Leyndell/Altus (golden capital) is where Japan would be and Japan was one of the largest producers of Gold at one point in its history. 7. In Gulliver’s travels, there is a Grand Academy in a town called Lagado which is described scholars trying to pursue pointless endeavors with not real value, similar to how Sellen’s quest ends with her goal having no real benefit.
There maybe others I haven’t seen yet since I’m not finished with GT’s but I speculate this was a framework for some of The Lands Between. It maybe that the the Lands Between are named as such because they are designed after the countries and lands in between the Old World (Europe and great majority of Asia) and the new World (the Americas).

2024.05.13 21:11 Legal_Law_9541 How to Date Above Your League

I can't commit to an AMA, but I thought this would help others. Don't mean to boast/flex as you'll see from my description below:
Why you might want to listen to me:
I'm just a hair short of 5'4", a school teacher who was broke as in had less than <$1K USD in savings and $50K in debt in my mid-thirties, small dick, no muscles, no game, can't sing or dance, & a jungle Asian (think Cambodian, Filipino, Burmese). The latter is meant to point out it's not the Korean trend that's driving this.
My girl is 5'6"—5'7", 10+ years younger than me, slim, blue-eyed blonde from one of the wealthiest Western European countries with a C/D chest, long legs that go above my stomach, a nice, shapely ass, and perfect hourglass waist/hips. Face-wise, imagine Nicole Kidman and Taylor Swift had a baby. To top it all off, she has a fancy job and makes much more than me, and her family is wealthy, while I grew up on food stamps and attended a low-income school.
My Advice:
The bad news is that I attribute getting her to luck, but here are some things I did right:
  1. This sounds counter-intuitive but pursue only physical 8s and higher. The most attractive women are less impervious to the social stigma of dating a guy who looks like me; they know they can pretty much get any type of guy they want; they don't need the social validation of an attractive man because they get the validation every day. In contrast, a guy like me will only remind an average woman of her plainness.
  2. Geographic arbitrage. Yes, passport bros get a bad rep, but you can be a passport bro to another wealthy country (I'm US-based, so I'm using the US as a baseline). It doesn't have to be Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, or LatAm.
I would avoid the Anglo countries and focus on women from more egalitarian countries or ones that aren't as hung up on status and prestige (so avoid the big capitals or any city that's sexy).
If you're in the US, NYC, Boston, or SF are big no-nos. In a place like Boston, where you went to school matters so unless you've got the Ivy pedigree, I would skip.
  1. Related to geography is to consider women from smaller towns/villages. They'll tend to be more down-to-earth, and you might be more of a novelty.
  2. You'll be rejected most of the time, so you need to keep at it and not become resentful, bitter, or angry. The negative emotions will surface in your future interactions with women.
Keep approaching because you won't match with most women, even if you get along.
  1. The most important trait I think I had (and I only acquired this in my early 30s) was being comfortable with myself/not caring what others thought. I don't like the word "confidence" because it's too vague. This means not trying to be someone you're not, not trying to show off. Don't mention your job or educational pedigree unless it comes up naturally and definitely not as a way to convey your value.
I conveyed my "value" by making quips, observations, and stories about mundane conversation topics that made her laugh. I asked lots of questions that invited her to delve into what she really thought about various topics and asked for her advice/opinion to get her to open up, feel comfortable, and show that I consider her a peer even with our age gap.
You're doing it right if she's doing most of the talking. Don't mansplain, talk at her, or lecture.
As luck would have it, I quoted from a book that she happened to like. Don't try to force something witty you have in your head. Let your conversation flow naturally.
Don't be self-deprecating in the beginning. If you're short or overweight, don't bring it up. You can joke about that later.
Don't shit-talk others; people who shit on strangers who aren't hurting them are insecure/projecting something rotten about themselves.
  1. Talk to and compliment (sincerely) strangers (cash registers are the best) whether it's someone you're romantically interested in or not. This will sharpen your conversation skills. Talk to other men just to shoot the shit. This will put you in a good frame of mind/mood.
  2. Aim for coffee dates rather than dinner, or if the latter, you will be the one to cut the evening short. Have the mentality that you have enough to talk about that it can wait until the next date.
Hope y'all find some of these helpful.
