2024.05.13 14:45 chitexlady Got any advice?

Howdy folks :-) I’m ~considering~ moving to Reno from Chicago. After 10 years in the “big” city, I’m ready for the “little city”! I would consider myself a professional and passionate server, experienced in all areas and types of restaurants and cafes, bars and grills. Is there a favorited local place people like to frequent? An area of Reno that’s more popular than the other? Any area that’s more “walkable”? I am open to all and any advice on why you love Reno or things that you think are important to know. I have family surrounding the area and they are a big part in why I would like to make this move, I feel family has been out of reach and that’s the biggest change I would like to make. Any opinions or advice on average rent, income expectations, ways to make friends, I’d love to hear it all! Is working at a casino like the peppermill something I should strive for? I’m looking forward to what’s next! Thanks for any and all inputs yall 🥰

2024.05.02 17:27 SouthernGoal4836 Game rules getting gradually worse. Reno/Vegas

Just a recreational gambler here. Been playing blackjack for 15 years mostly in California and Nevada and have always had a soft spot for Reno. I go up there about twice a year now that I live a bit further.
Anyways we all know casinos everywhere have replaced many 3/2 tables with 6/5 and there is a myriad of carnival blackjack games that are becoming popular that have a higher house edge.
I was playing at the El Dorado and Silver legacy in Reno last weekend (both Caesars properties) and they had a weird rule I hadn’t seen previously. For double deck you had two types of tables. 3/2 with double on 9/10/11 and no double after split allowed/re split aces up to 4 times. Or 6/5 double on 9/10/11 and double after split/ cannot resplit aces. This was at a $50 minimum table at El Dorado (highest minimums they had) and a $25 minimum at Silver legacy.
I’ve never seen no DAS allowed on a 3/2 DD in my life. The fact that this was at Caesars properties tells me this is probably all over Vegas too? Luckily all my local casinos don’t have that nonsense. Once I realized this I just went over to the Peppermill where there are more games, higher limits, and none of those rules.
Going to Vegas next month for first time in 3 years so I’ll keep an eye on the rules I see. Last time I was there I never played a 6/5 game but have seen videos about 6/5 even on $25 minimums. Sickening.

2024.04.27 16:55 OldLoafers Explain this strategy, please.

I stopped into the Peppermill in Wendover while driving from Elko to SLC. I just needed to stretch my legs and did not have time for a game. It was mid-afternoon on a Tuesday and the casino was almost empty.
At the sole Craps table was just one guy who was only playing the pass line and the point. And, for the 10 minutes I watched, he seemed to be winning more often than not. He was also taking brief written notes after each roll, although I’m not sure what he was writing down. Lastly, his chips were divided across the different section of his rail, and he would only use from one group of chips.
I stood about five feet away from the table, and as much as I wanted to ask what his strategy was, I did not want to disturb him. So, any thoughts on his strategy would be appreciated.

2024.04.22 02:54 TheBitchKing0fAngmar Casinos with covered parking or parking garages?

I live in in the sticks but come into reno twice a month for obedience and agility classes with my dog. Afterwards, I'd like to hit a casino for an hour before heading home, but obviously wouldn't do that if it meant leaving my pup in a car that's exposed to the sun.
(Before anyone comes at me, my dog loves the car and has no issues being left for an hour, especially since he gets super exhausted after class and will just snooze. I'm not a degenerate gambler and when I say an hour I mean an hour, it's not like he'd be left all day, I just still want to make sure the car doesn't get hot.)
I know the Peppermill has a parking garage, but I was curious if it's the only one. Atlantis and GSR don't, so they're out. Any other ideas are welcome!
Edit: thank you everyone who gave helpful responses! I appreciate it. I had hoped that my reasonable question and additional context shared would show that I am a responsible pet owner and am not interested in boiling my dog alive, but alas there are always people who want to do anything but answer the question. Here's some more context for any would-be keyboard warriors:
PLEASE do not comment if you're going to come at me about keeping my happy dog happy. He is happy. Thank you for your concern.

2024.04.16 01:50 DemonNecron Newbie Non AP Player

Hey, I am new to playing at a table so far I have played a few games in Vegas and Wendover. I like free play face up games the best, I have also played single deck face down, I know about Royal bets, insurance but I'm not sure why insurance is worth it, I know about splitting Aces/10's (wouldn't we always want to split?), I know about doubling down but I'm not sure when to do it I'm wanting to play based on the showing cards with strategy rather than AP play since I can't count cards for a damn. I seem to lose more when playing single deck face down but I was doing well with free bet 3 decks.
What variants of BJ are in Wendover? What games are best for a new player? How do I find out what games are at what casinos? I would mostly be playing in Wendover but would make special visits to Vegas occasionally. Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated!

2024.04.15 20:34 DemonNecron Newbie Non AP Player

Hey! I'm familiar with playing BJ but have just recently gone to Vegas/Wendover to actually play at a table. I have had trouble learning the differences between the different variations of BJ but I have so far played free bet 3 decks face up, single deck face down, and 3 deck face up. I have a rough idea of when to split cards and how split aces work, I know what doubling is but don't know when to do it, I know about Royal bets, and insurance but I don't see a point to insurance.
So far I like free bet face up games the best but I don't even know the proper names or even table etiquette all that well. How do I go about finding what variants of BJ a casino has without going inside? Which casinos in Wendover are newbie friendly? I'm not a mental math kinda guy so I doubt I will ever be an AP player so I'm looking for advice on practical play based on shown cards and play rather than anything with counts.

2024.02.25 09:31 00ThunderWolf Possible to redeem 2 2-night free stay at Peppermill Reno? Confused about

My apartment is having some Pipe re-work and we have to be out of the unit from Mon-Thur which is perfect because the free nights are only for those days too. Now my question is that I read on the Terms and Conditions that I can only redeem 1 premium reward every 90 days? so I can't score 4 free nights AND was also hoping for the $100 casino play there as well? since it's a premium reward as well. but then I'm confused as well because I have seen many people say on here that you can actually redeem 3 premium rewards at once so yeah idk. sorry! any help is really appreciated. Also I'm aware that you can also apparently redeem as many non-premium rewards? unfortunately there's no non-premium at the Reno peppermill but it will help in the future whenever I go to vegas.

if it helps I have 350K LP so I have more than enough for the rewards and I also play on MyKonami which they have different/separate rewards? will I be able to get 2 free nights from myVegas and 2 free nights from myKonami?

Hoping for Pie, Getting Cigarette Smoke and Meeting Regulars at the Gold Dust West Casino
Our Citizen's Forum contribution today is from an anonymous UNR student. If you'd like to contribute your own citizen's forum contribution for our channels never hesitate.
Driving around Reno I would always see these signs that said “Free Pie”, “Free Pie… Reinvented!”
So, one cold Thursday afternoon where I had nothing better to do, I decided I’d go to the Gold Dust West and get myself some free pie and play a few bucks to kill some time.
The thought of the free pie vanished when I walked in, as I was met with that familiar smell.
My nose was filled with that classic casino scent, an overwhelming linger of a cheap air freshener, mixed with fresh cigarette smoke.
As someone who grew up in Las Vegas and had parents who would go out to bingo a few nights a week and drop me off at the casino’s daycare type center, this smell brought on a strong feeling of nostalgia.
Reno is known for quite a few things, and gambling is one of them. If you take a glance across the town, you’ll see at least five large casino resorts standing out. You’ve got the Nugget, GSR, Atlantis, Peppermill, and the Row which consists of three casinos.
But, scattered around town are lots of smaller, more local casinos with a very loyal customer base.
There’s the Cal-Neva downtown, a college favorite. Siri’s casino, also downtown, is another college favorite because of their $5 daiquiri special.
We can’t forget Boomtown, or Rail City, and the year-old Legends Bay in Sparks.
Reno’s casinos scream “Old Vegas”. Among all of these “smaller” casinos, there’s one that has always stood out to me: the Gold Dust West.
When you really think about it, casinos are a very interesting concept, and they pretty much thrive off of three addictions: alcoholism, gambling, and smoking… And the fact that older folks will come almost every night and gamble their Social Security checks away.

2024.02.23 21:57 Wawa_hoagie I have 6 hours to kill and would like to see a snapshot of Reno. Recommendations?

So genius me scheduled a flight 6 hours before my friends who arrive in Reno. After doing some searching of your sidebar it seems Peppermill is the swankiest casino in town so I was thinking of Uber if there, dropping my bags and exploring.
I’d like to check out any other notable casinos and appreciate the design and people watch. I’d like to expand my casino chip collection and have a few cocktails. Already eying up the Patagonia outlet too. What would you guys recommend for a tourist afternoon in the city? Is the arch worth it? Attractions walkable to each other is a plus! Fill me in! Thanks!

My wife turns 40 on Friday and we’re in Reno to drop off baby stuff for her cousin. What do you all consider the best casino for a Friday night for 40 year olds? Looking for some normal gaming, good drinks and or restaurants to celebrate.
I like Grand Sierra and haven’t been to Peppermill or Atlantis. I doubt silverlegacy is our vibe. Would like slightly nicer.

2023.12.14 19:00 Difficult_Taste_8714 Bankroll for playing craps

Me and my buddies are staying at the Aria in February and I want to play craps and I was wondering what would be a good bankroll to bring for craps? I’ve only ever gambled craps at small casinos around California and Wendover in north Nevada where the minimums are $5-$10 so I want to make sure I bring a comfortable amount. Thanks in advance, also any suggestions on best place to play craps based on your experience is also welcomed (:
Edit: I have bankroll figured out now, any places that you prefer for craps? (Ex. Nice staff, good atmosphere, people usually chill etc.)

2023.11.18 18:41 IHuntAppleNerds How the Legends Mall Came to Be.

I have seen many small business closures this year; however, I paid particular attention to Midtown and the Legends. The Legends is a classic example of poor planning and underestimating local market economics. The Legends project was created by giving BIG BOX and large corporations FREE taxpayer money to build with zero risk. Smaller retailers and businesses, however, didn’t get a penny.
When Legends came into play, there were only two malls in Reno, Nevada…. Meadowood and Plumb Lane. Within two years, however, Summit Mall, Spanish Springs, Legends, and Cabella’s would all be developed. At the time, Reno only had a population of Roughly 280,000 people. There would not be enough population density to support these developments.
The Legends came to be because of a little-known loophole known as STAR bonds. Sales Tax Anticipation Revenue bonds — or STAR bonds — allowed local governments in Nevada to borrow against projected sales-tax revenues inside of a special tourism district. Those STAR bonds would help build a tourism attraction, and, in return, 100 percent of the sales taxes it generated would pay off the STAR bond debt needed to create the development in the first place. The STAR Bond approval for this project was $150 million in sales tax revenue… FREE Business and money for big box retailers.
Even worse is that these projects started right before the recession of 2009. The result was a serious slowdown in the economy. Regarding the projected payback of the debt from the Taxpayers, of the $15 million projected only $7 million was generated. This windfall created serious budgetary issues for everyone involved. The world basically came to an end.
Businesses come and go; however, some key factors drive closures in Northern Nevada.
#1 Northern Nevada is a gaming community. Casinos are fiercely competitive in attracting, keeping, and generating customers. A large part of the attraction is FOOD. A great example is when Morgan’s Lobster Shack opened in Midtown and sold a lobster roll for $18.99 when the Atlantis and Peppermill were selling a similar roll for $14.99. Subsequently, Casino gives away food to its loyal customer base. Casinos gobble up hundreds of millions of dollars in discretionary food purchases per year. It’s no wonder that Reno restaurants struggle.
#2 Population Density. More than 70% of Northern Nevada business is generated by locals. Reno has a population of around 350,000 people, while Washoe County is just under 500,000. There are four major shopping malls within the community. There is only so much business to go around.
#3 Rents. Rents have skyrocketed.
#4 Labor. The cost of labor is incredibly high, and the consumer is already showing signs of a breaking point. In 2024, the value proposition for food purchasing will be key to survival. In June 2024 the minimum wage will increase 20% in Nevada, further driving pressure on small businesses. The test will see how much consumers are willing to absorb increased prices in order to compete.
#5 Operational Costs: Operational costs for businesses have increased by more than 30% since 2019. God for bid a small business A/C unit goes out. As an example: Baskin Robins in South Reno closed because the A/C repair was going to be more than $15,000. They couldn’t afford to take that type of hit. Utilities, maintenance, and other costs are incredibly high.
In summary, it's tough right now. In some cities, small restaurants are closing at a rate of 1 per week. If small business is going to survive, it will come down to who can hold their breath the longest.

2023.10.25 18:45 NationalChamps2015 My Review of Reno and the downtown sportsbook scene

So I always post a state of the sportbook post after every Vegas trip I take. My wife had a work conference in Reno, so I decided to tag along and be a complete degenerate and visit some sportsbooks in the Downtown Reno area. Here is my take.
Silver Legacy
Stayed at the Silver Legacy. For those with Diamond status and above, they treat you very well at Checkin. The Diamond checkin area offered you plenty of drinks and snacks, and welcomes you to go in there throughout the day. There's a free shuttle that runs to the airport and back about every 30 minutes. I did not use it, but my wife did and found it a very pleasant process. I used the free valet offer for Diamond and was happy with it. The Silver Legacy is a row of casinos all operated by Caesars, all are connected, the SL, Circus Circus and El Dorado.
The Sportsbook itself at Silver Legacy was great. Big area of LED Tv's, followed by a wall of about 10 other TV's to show other games. A sportsbar right in the middle also had other games. An LED TV on the other side featured horse racing, and the crowd for the racebook side was very active. Another row of TV's next to the racebook offered more screens to watch games. I spent the day betting afternoon NLCS and ALCS day baseball and found the people in the book active in the games. Maybe a little "rougher" corwd. But they warmed up to me and was able to talk sports with a lot of them.
At the bet windows I found it mixed getting free drink tickets. One person would toss me two tickets for every bet I placed. Another guy was rough and told me it was a $100 minimum. Bartender at the bar to get the drinks was always nice and wanting to serve. A great experience no matter the time of day. Certainly a comfortable place people needing a weekend away could have some fun.

Sportsbook LED screen

Racebook
Solid mid-tier renovated room
El Dorado
Sportsbook at El Dorado was similar to that of a sportsbar. Tons of betting kiosks, and a teller. No racebook, just sports betting. Seats were plentiful on a Saturday morning during college football. I enjoyed it here, but I'm sure it's lacking during weekdays.

Circus Circus
Never saw anyone in here the first two days. On a college football Saturday, I did see one person watching the games. No bet teller, did have automated kiosks. Honestly, a place you only want to go if you want to be alone.

https://preview.redd.it/kpy2mab4pdwb1.jpg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=761fb62f5801b6e6668d08870ec056ddbe69570b
Club Cal Neva
I love dive casinos, but this place was a whole new level. One of the shittiest places I ever stepped foot in. The crowd matched it. I was constantly feeling my wallet to make sure it was still there. Also, did not want to use the bathroom at this place for fear of getting shanked. Avoid!

https://preview.redd.it/h3p4tvf5pdwb1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bb8e2c241948e6cc669bfcbc320c0d95f3bcb52a

J Resort
One of the newest renovated casinos in Reno. Casino is nice, but tons of old people. Small betting William Hill area, but nothing as far as a spotsbook goes. Not even worth a picture.
Overall Rating of Reno
Honestly, not bad. Some good, some bad. Only spent time in the downtown part, would like to see the peppermill, Atlantis and Grand Sierra next time I go. I would say Reno is NOT a replacement for Vegas. However if you're looking for a weekend trip that is different and cheaper than Vegas, this is a good option for those of us on the west coast.
Reno was beautiful and clean in some places and dirty and filled with homeless in others

2023.10.19 00:52 Coyote_Havoc BATTLEBORN: Part 1, Chapter 3

"This sucks."
Everyone has at least two things they absolutely hate. In the case of Elder Commander Ryan Creese, it was snow and salt. So where would the Temple send him other than Desert Peak Observation depot in mid December, an Island of Rock covered in snow in the middle of Bonnaville Salt Flats. For the first time in his life did he regret converting to Mormonism. It was an easy duty, but the dark grey sky rolling in from Wendover seemed like an enemy plot to further make his life miserable.
In the south at Saint George, it was already snowing. Snow was unusual in most of Utah, until New York was destroyed anyway. Since then, every winter, it had snowed everywhere in Utah. Speculation was that the nuke set off in the UN building had somehow also manipulated the weather, but meteorologist said something about "El Nino" or "El Nina" and dismissed the conspiracy theories. None of it helped Ryan overcome the fact that it would be snowing, again, within the hour.
Heading inside, Elder Commander Creese could still feel the freezing temperatures and went strait for a freshly brewed pot of hot cider. He would rather have coffee, but the Temple had decreed that coffee and tea were both forbidden again. They were also a little too quick to mention embargoes from Arizona and Navajo had nothing to do with it. The Holy Republic of Deserete, still known as Utah and Idaho to most, was in the same boat as many of the other States were. Surrounded on all sides by potential enemies. However the Temple had decided on a more 'Defend and Observe' stance than some. In their own media, Deserete was made out to look pacifist and defensive of their territory. The reality was that they were looking for any potential weakness that they could exploit. It had already blown up in their face at Evanston and Mesquite, thus the embargo.
"Do you know how cold it has to be for water to freeze on salt?"
Ryan jumped a little in surprise and turned to meet the gaze of the Chaplain Bishop with a touch of amusement in his eyes.
"Don't know and don't care Sir." He replied.
The amusement left the Chaplains face. "It doesn't matter how much you don't like it Elder Commander," he explained talking down to Ryan, "its a gift from God and you should thank God for it."
The Chaplain Bishop, a rather high ranking figure in the Temple before the war, wasn't just passively religious. He was a zealot in every sense of the word. In the time since he had taken command of Desert Peak, he had led several assaults on Wendover personally and from the front. The ruins of the casinos could be seen on clear days, evidence of the Chaplain Bishops handiwork.
"We have new orders," the Chaplain Bishop began, "when the weather clears up we are to send two drones out. The first is to Battle Mountain."
"It's a hospital." Ryan replied.
"Yes," the Chaplain Bishop commented, "and a few months ago it was reinforced by the 9th Mobile Infantry. Now why on God's green earth would the Regiment that took down a California Division be relocated to Battle Mountain?"
Ryan thought about it for a minute. Battle Mountain wasn't what anyone would consider a forward target. It was in the middle of the state, the military hospital of Nevada was located there, and the only strategic importance was the old interstate.
"No clue sir." Ryan said flatly.
"Curious," the Chaplain Bishop said in a snide tone, "how did you get promoted to Elder Commander?"
Ryan took immediate offense. "Dubois and Island Park might have had something to do with it." Ryan remembered those heady days, gathering up students from Rexburg in a successful effort to repel Montana's 4th militia out of Dubois, then heading to Island park to reinforce the embattled saints against the 7th Montana. For those acts he had earned his first command, those same students from Rexburg. It was a shame he wasn't with them now in Saint George.
"Yes, well, action should always be tempered with thought." Dismissed the Chaplain Bishop. "The first drone is to take a high altitude series of passes in the area of Battle Mountain looking for some sort of weapons system that the Temple calls 'Nightingale' and if observed images are to be passed on to the Temple who will decide how best to proceed."
Ryan considered the information for a few minutes. A weapon system next to a hospital was of the more cowardly acts of warfare. It would be a major blow against Nevada if that information turned out to be true.
"And the second sir?" He asked.
"Something about an old plane crash between Ely and Wendover." The Chaplain Bishop said absently. "An SR-71 I think."

2023.10.10 11:06 def11879 Playing in Finland

I’m on a trip in Helsinki and yesterday played a small tournament and cash game at a casino here. I live in Utah and normally play at Wendover, NV which is a tiny casino border town with 3 casinos and a couple poker rooms.
Couldn’t be more different of an experience. In Wendover like 80% of players are 60-80 years old (some literally on death’s doorstep), it’s pretty common for like 6 people to limp in every hand, and in general I’ve done pretty well just kinda playing aggressive.
In Helsinki everyone is a 20-35 year old dude, I’m pretty sure at least half of them were pros (this was midday on a Monday), and in the several hours I spent playing I think I saw one person limp in once, which was immediately raised. That being said, I’m pretty proud of the fact that I ended up slightly up at the cash game (busted on the bubble in the tourney) given no one was speaking English, the chips made me feel color blind and were strange amounts, and the genera skill level was high.
I know I’ve seen a few Finnish pros in the old days (Antonius, Helppi), are they generally highly regarded? Any fins here?
