2024.05.16 07:59 pinkfloralhazee My “sato” dog and her story

My “sato” dog and her story
In October 2017 my husband and I decided to adopt our first dog together. We went to our local shelter and found out that they had just flown in 50 rescues from Puerto Rico after it got hit by hurricane Maria and hurricane Irma. We spent time with them all, when we got to our sweet girl, this very kind woman said “please adopt her, I have too many dogs so I can’t take her home, but she is the sweetest thing and deserves a lot of love” she was shaking like a leaf while licking our hands. My husband instantly said “this is the one”. The shelter named her Carla, but we felt like she was more of a Carly, so that’s what we changed her name to.
At the time I was in my second trimester with our first child (crazy to adopt a dog while pregnant, I know I know) and Carly was estimated to be around 6 months old. We’ve watched her and our son grow up together and it has been the most amazing experience. They have the closest bond and are best friends.
We got one of those dog DNA tests that year for Christmas, people always ask what breed she is and I just say “she’s a mix of a lot of breeds, but she’s mostly a whippet” to keep it simple
Carly came with a lot of quirks since she was traumatized by the hurricanes. Bodies of water, showers, rain, wind, drainage systems, loud noises, people and other animals scared her. She wouldn’t go outside the first year we had her, though we never stopped trying to take her out daily. She used a puppy pad for a long time, until she finally worked up the courage to go outside. She’s been fully house trained for awhile. She has warmed up to most dogs and is great with people now. We trim her nails regularly but she still bites them out of anxiety. She’s still scared of water, wind, drainage systems, and loud noises. She shakes, whines and hides a lot.
We have been able to train her well, but there are moments we think she might have sustained some head trauma. She likes to lick walls and sometimes she’ll stare at walls with the most blank expression. But she can smile and that’s really cool!
I learned from a Puerto Rican client of mine that stray dogs in Puerto Rico are called Satos.
I love talking about her so much, I think her story is interesting and she is so special to me 🤍

My ae2 system is being funky (ATM 3 remix)
So my storage system is a bit large and recently it's been having a few issues: 1. when I type in my storage system it also types in the JEI bar for some reason 2. I couldn't get it working on recording but sometimes when I try to access my system in any way at all, it just blanks out of me until I remove and put back in a drive (something like the image) does anyone know what's going on?

2024.05.16 06:45 firestorm_v1 I just can't make any progress! What am I doing wrong here?

I seem to be at an impasse and I just can't seem to figure out this game. I just came from finishing Fallout3 to which I had a great time. I hopped into FNV after recommendations from the Fallout community, but so far it's gone.. not well and I'm really close to just giving up.
1) The food doesn't heal and wears off in seconds. The books of various topics also expires in seconds. Sleep and stimpacks can't be the only way to heal up in the midst of a gunfight, not to mention that Stimpacks are rare! I've been looking in all the usual places, med kit boxes, random containers, dead people, etc...
2) The guns suck! All of them. Even if fixed to 100%! I have a variety of weapons and have even modded a few, but I can't seem to kill anyone or anything with any semblance of regularity even with using VATS. If I don't get that first headshot off on a crit (with or without VATS), I'm going to die. If there's more than one person I'm battling, I'm going to die. I even have the DLCs and supposedly start off with good guns but not that I can tell thanks to the amount of times I've had to reload.
3) The Karma system seems to be completely screwed up. Why am I getting bad karma for stealing from .... the powder gangers? The same a**holes that just tried to blow me up with dynamite. I don't give two sticks about how the powder gangers think of me, I thought I was supposed to destroy them after what they tried in Goodsprings?
4) I can't go ANYWHERE outside of Goodsprings without getting owned by the wildlife! Radscorpions, bloatflies, more scorpions, a couple of centaurs, cazadores, raiders, viper clan thugs, powder gangers, etc. just seem to walk all over me.
5) Everything wants level 50! I can't pick this lock without 50 lockpick. Can't hack that terminal without level 50, can't fart without being level 50, oh but I can die a lot at level 1.
6) The bad-guy-detector in the HUD (the lines that show the cardinal direction and whether or not a particular entity is hostile) is laughably narrow in some cases and extends to ridiculous lengths in others. Using the dry lakebed as an example, I saw three scorpions that didn't even register in the HUD, meanwhile the HUD will show me a neutral party that's two miles away that I don't even have line of sight to. At least with FO3, the red dots were bad guys, the green dots were good guys, and it was fairly consistent 1/4 mi radius from the player's position.
I really need some guidance. I want to get to the story but I can't even exist without something taking a chunk out of me. I've already rebuilt my character twice, do I need to do it again? Are there any guides available that are trusted that can at least get me buffed up enough to even consider going to NV?
Steam says I've played for 12 hours, there's at least two character recreations, and countless reload-from-saves due to random encounters going generally poorly. 12hrs into Fallout3 and I already had a pretty effective arsenal up and was up to at least level 8 or 9.
Preferred playstyle: Sniper, not that I can find a sniper rifle to save my life. Close quarters combat even with the caravan shotgun seems to be more miss than hit even at point blank range and CQC with the grenade launcher (see the Powdergangers jail shootouts) really just seems to be adept at killing me and me only.
My current stats: Level 6
Skills: Barter 15 Energy Weapons 22 Explosives 22 Guns 47 Lockpick 37 Medicine 25 Melee Weapons 21 Repair 45 Science 30 Sneak 40 Speech 35 Survival 15 Unarmed 15
SPECIAL: Strength 5 Perception 6 Endurance 4 Charisma 1 Intelligence 9 Agility 8 Luck 9
Perks: Built To Destroy Educated Run 'n Gun Small Frame Swift Learner
Suggestions, tips, guidance is appreciated! Thank you.

2024.05.16 05:47 17blck Professor didn't uploaded my final grade, resulting in me getting a C.

I took a 5 week course as it is required for my major and while it was fairly easy material, my professor made it so difficult to pass. She grades heavily and while she is very clear on what she expects from assignments, some things would get lost in translation and she would deduct a large amount of points on an assignment due to something minor, like uploading assignments in the wrong order. She gave me a 50 on an assignment because I failed to upload a blank document along with it. While I understand why she does this, I find it really unfair for her to grade so heavily. The assignments were done correctly, I shouldn't have to worry about failing because of her tedious grading. The last day of class she decided to exempt us all from the final and give us a 100 if we followed the rules, which I did. A week after, I noticed she had uploaded grades for all other assignments BUT my final. I asked other classmates and they said their grades were uploaded so I decided to wait before emailing her since I know she waits until last minute to input grades. Today I check the system to see what was the finalized grade for the course just to find out she never uploaded it, leaving me with a C. The grade I had BEFORE the final. This is the first time I deal with something like this and I don't know what to do. Do I just deal with the grade I got or can I do something to correct it?

2024.05.16 04:42 Ok-Repair-4085 Quest 3 crashed possibly QGO?

My quest 3 just crashed loading into another round of contractors showdown. I’ve had QGO for about it a week and it’s run just fine. I play on HD+ and don’t do any personal settings. The quest kept going blank then windows popped up saying social network not responding and system maintenance not responding or to that nature. Even after shutting down for 10 minutes if I tried to boot up the boundary select would pop up, go away, then boom black screen. I was forced to do a reset, thankfully the cloud was backed up. Will my progress be saved in contractors showdown? Should I even try downloading QGO again or what. Please help.

2024.05.16 02:45 mining_moron Road to Hope Chapters 0-7 [Chapter Outlines only]

ch0 -- [already written]. City Alpha of Ikun, Nyektak-pack is in the Bastion, the official City Alpha residence, working through the annual agenda that the Lawspeakers have passed them for Y932. Along the way, they begin discussing what kind of legacy they'll leave behind after they're dead and gone, whether everything they've built will be torn apart in a day or stand for a thousand years. The pack's alpha Nyektak Tun points out that Ikun stands in a precarious position and what they do now will have a huge impact. The economy is stagnating due to jobs being replaced by robots and automation, the environment is collapsing, leading to huge waves of refugees from the equatorial Dunelands. Further, their geopolitical enemy Koranah city-state is rapidly catching up economically and militarily, and sensing blood in the water with regards to Ikun's hegemony, is becoming increasingly aggressive with its foreign policy. Nyektak Nyak suggests that geoengineering can be used to stabilize things, with tools such as weather control satellites and ecological nanobots. However, this is regarded as a critical security threat by Tun, as Koranah is ahead of Ikun in this field, so if a global Climate Control System is created, then it is likely Koranah-based companies and Koranah technology that will tie the whole system together, leading them to have an outsized role. Such a thing is regarded as politically dangerous, as it could pose a threat to the Hegemony even without Koranah overturning Ikun's nuclear monopoly. And it won't even create many jobs in Ikun, so it won't resolve the economic concerns. Nyak points out that it's not politically viable to simply ban geoengineering without the state coming up with a better idea. After a long discussion, it is Nyektak Aykay who finally has a breakthrough idea. They will create a starship to send a military occupation force to planet TRK-16-3 (aka Earth......). Not only will this create enormous numbers of jobs in Ikun to revitalize the economy, but it will demonstrate to the rest of the world that Ikun still has an unmatched ability to project military force even at interstellar distances, and give the citizens of Ikun hope that they can seek out a better life on another planet. Indeed for this reason, it is called Project Hope.
ch1 -- [already written] Nyektak-pack makes an unexpected appearence in the Hall of Power, where Ikun's Lawspeakers convene, looking to make some deals and exert some pressure in order to get Project Hope put on the annual agenda. They have identified that a certain Lawspeaker Ronyr-pack is the most influential pack in the Lawspeakers' Association at present, and so speak to them first, the idea being that they will be able to pull the strings necessary to approve Project Hope. Although Lawspeaker Ronyr-pack are initially skeptical, they agree to assist after Nyektak-pack promises an array of political favors, including guaranteeing that Ikoin Corporation--which Ronyr-pack own significant stock in--will be the main contractor for Project Hope, and reducing the taxes they collect on healthcare workers, who are present in large numbers in Ronyr-pack's district. However, Ronyr-pack is just the first Lawspeaker that Nyektak-pack will have to deal with; in order to ensure that Project Hope actually gets onto the agenda, they also have to make a separate deal with Ronyr-pack's enemy Lawspeaker Radenkiut-pack, who have the second-largest group of allies in the Lawspeaker's Association. Nevertheless, City Alpha Nyektak-pack gets what they want--zero restrictions on raising funds for Project Hope, coupled with a ban on geoengineering tech and directives to pursue sanctions against other city-states that don't join them in doing so, thereby inhibiting the rise of a Climate Control System as an alternative to Project Hope. As Nyektak Aykay points out, these two agenda items reinforce each other; one can't be overturned without also overturning the other.
ch2 -- Icen-pack is a struggling pack of construction workers in Ikun in Y934, who always have to be on the constant lookout for their next gig, as jobs are scarce and hard to come by. They are currently working on a new skyscraper in Ikun's well-to-do District 7, including the flying buttresses that extend over the surrounding roads to interconnect with the supports of adjacent buildings, as typical with Kyanah architecture. Even now they are already even as they work leveraging advanced algorithms to predict the next opening so they can apply before anyone else. Things are made even more cutthroat by the increasingly widespread use of wearable sensors to identify the best performers, and the fact that immigrants from the Dunelands tend to be willing to work for lower wages, which drives pay down for everyone and often forces native Ikun packs to work even harder to justify their wages. As they work, Icen Korak (who, like Kei and Nuyu, grew up in the industry, as their birth-packs worked in construction) laments that things used to be simpler when he was growing up, and packs didn't have to constantly fight against each other to land building jobs, and there were more full time positions instead of the constant data-driven scramble for gigs. Icen-pack's alpha Naiun, as well as Karok, mostly take this in stride, having not grown up in the industry and thus not being as familiar with it, but the rest agree with Korak. Karok points out that it's not a huge surprise, considering how few buildings are being built in the current economy and how even a skyscraper can be built with just a couple dozen packs with current technology, but still nobody is happy with the status quo. They contemplate trying to sabotage the metrics of their coworkers, suspecting that others will do the same to them, taking advantage of the new wearable sensors that are measuring performance; however Naiun insists that they will be fine if they just work hard and be honest, and seeing as she is the pack's alpha that kind of shuts the idea down. They also contemplate having another pair of young, in addition to their current pair Raktan and Tyorek, but money is at present too tight for that. However, Project Hope is announced to the public in an address by Nyektak-pack on state TV. They are initially all a bit confused why Ikun is planning an interstellar invasion, but Kei realizes that Project Hope will serve as a huge jobs program and speculates that this will have knock-on effects across the rest of the economy, and jobs for them will once again be plentiful, putting the whole pack on a hopeful note.
ch3 -- Ryen-pack is graduating from the prestigious Nktan University (in the neighboring city-state of Nktan obviously) and becoming scholars of the first rank. While they all agree they are going to miss the university, they all look forward to going back to Ikun and what comes ahead, as they will be starting work at a prestigious influencing firm in Ikun, basically working with the government to have laws changed for their clients. Ryen Kerok, the pack's Alpha, is especially eager to change the world, believing that they will be able to do a lot of good by influencing the highest levels of Ikun's government for their future clients. Teren is mostly thinking about the high salary that will enable them to have children quickly, whereas young packs in Ikun have to save for years. As for Kaun, she occupies something of a middle ground between the two. Ryen Konyan has the most misgivings about everything, about leaving Nktan University for the "real world", about the possibility that they'll end up working for corrupt clients and doing more harm than good, and about bringing children into a dying world, especially with the onset of Project Hope, which they all agree is stupid and short-sighted, but don't think the government will actually go through with building the starships and launching the military expedition to Earth. They are also concerned about the geoengineering ban, believing that Koranah city-state and their allies will just ignore it, giving them even more control over the future Climate Control System. And so they make their way back to Ikun to begin their careers at the influencing firm Kortak-Dakayan Corporation, a bit hopeful but also a bit uncertain about the future.
ch4 -- some lawspeakers and the city alpha are being shown the initial stages of technological progress on Project Hope in Y935 at Toryak University, the most prestigious university in Ikun. An enormous supercomputer complex has been constructed, using the Kyanahs' signature mechanical computers and is being used to research interstellar propulsion methods. Although many of the scientists are a little skeptical of Project Hope, they do appreciate the huge influx of funding to pursue their research. Nyektak-pack is impressed that the complex has been constructed in only a year (technically it's still under construction, but experiments are already underway as the city-state has imposed some very tough deadlines on them), but as the lead scientist-pack points out, it wasn't so difficult when they had a blank check from the Ikun government. However, they have some bad news: they've been attempting to design an interstellar engine using nuclear pulse propulsion, but despite their best efforts to optimize the design, it will only be able to reach 4% of light speed, which as they point out means that humanity will possibly be more technologically advanced than their own military by the time Project Hope arrives. The main problem is that the casing and detonation mechanisms of the nukes are basically dead weight. It seems that there may be a way around this by using antimatter-catalyzed nuclear propulsion, where small quantities of antimatter are fed into nuclear material to force a reaction without needing a bunch of actual nukes. However, this further has the problem that it will require grams of antimatter, meaning that a huge particle accelerator in the PeV range will have to be built. But if this can be done, the engines will be able to reach the required 7.5% of light speed. Much to the scientists' shock, Nyektak-pack immediately agrees to fund this accelerator. However, in private this prompts an argument between them as they don't actually have available funds, even if they funnel money from non-Hope agenda items into the project. The realize that Ikun can't do it alone while also building the starships themselves, they need funds and technical expertise from other city-states to build it, and will need to use their influence in the Coalition of Cities to get it, possibly in exchange for dipolmatic concessions that may destabilize Ikun's already precarious Hegemony. Meanwhile, we are also introduced to Nyektor-pack, a student of the second rank working on the supercomputing project while nurturing big dreams to someday be scholar of the third rank, at which point they aspire to start a research group to solve the many technical problems that must be solved for Project Hope to be successful.
ch5 -- A certain Ryen-pack--none other than Ryen Kerok's birth-pack--are working at one of Ikun's top universities, where their life's work has revolved around developing ecological nanobots that can break down pollutants in the soil. However, with enforcement of Y934 Agenda Item 579 beginning (banning technology associated with the Climate Control System), their entire life's work has now been forbidden by the government. Even many of their own students have bought into the official propaganda that this technology is dangerous and unreliable, and must be banned, much to their anger and disgust. They have continued working right up until the day the ban comes into effect, but a pack of university administrators orders them to destroy their research as the police will soon be arriving to shut the department down. Many harsh words are exchanged between Ryen-pack and the administrators, but ultimately there's nothing they can do except wipe their computers and destroy their prototypes before the police show up. After this, they reach out to their son Kerok's pack, which causes Kerok to wonder what is going on in their lives and if they want to be ikoin (kyanah term for friends/allies, but more explicitly transactional) but the elder Ryen-pack is retiring and leaving Ikun for the northern scrublands. Kerok urges them to stay and use their brilliant minds to do some good in Ikun, including the younger Ryen-pack's future children (even telling them that they will name one of their young after the elder Ryen-pack's alpha, Ayen), but the elder pack has made up their mind, they're done trying to pursue science while the government keeps interfering with their work, but tell the younger pack that the young are the future of Ikun, and if they want to save the planet, they must optimize their young for the cause, a message which seems to resonate most with Kerok and less with some of the others, especially Konyan.
ch6 -- Aktektan-pack is a large pack with many young who works long and arduous hours at an Ikoin Corporation factory assembling bombs and missiles for meager pay. After another mind numbing and monotonous day of working and getting into petty fights with coworkers during Y936, they head home to their tiny rundown apartment and engage in their typical pasttime of watching TV, especially Ikun's state TV, which triumphantly reports that Project Hope is already proving to be a massive boon to the economy. The fact that they've receieved a small bonus this year further convinces them that this is unquestionably true. They immediately proceed to spend their bonus on alcohol and pro-government merch. After Nedak realizes that their rent has increased as well by the same amount as their bonus, he angrily accuses their alpha Nyaken of mismanaging their money, to which Nyaken accuses the other females in the pack--Karien and Tanun--of laying too many eggs and creating too many mouths to feed, though their seems to be an undercurrent of jealousy in her rants, which leads to a physical fight between the members of Aktektan-pack. Later, Karien reveals that she's actually laid another egg--actually only one, which is seen as a sign of bad luck, as Kyanah lay eggs in pairs. These arguments ultimately peter out as the pack ends up falling asleep whilst watching a rather jingoistic movie.
ch7 -- Ptorya-pack lives in Adronkin, a city-state in the scorching hot Dunelands that is poorer, less developed, and much smaller than Ikun, where they're assistant administrators at a local textile factory. An unseasonally strong and dangerous sandstorm strikes, causing considerable damage to the factory and disrupting operations. Some workers, including Ptorya Llrien speculates that city-state officials including the City Alpha have been embezzling money intended for fortifying local buildings against sandstorms and spending it on luxury cars and mansions instead, but Ptorya-pack's alpha Rytor advises everyone not to ask too many questions about it and just focus on repairing the factory so they can all get back to work. At their home, which is quite small and spartan; despite them being white collar workers in the top 10% of earners in Adronkin, it would be a poor pack's apartment in Ikun; they notice clouds of irritating industrial smog containing lots of coal dust wafting in from the south and find several dead thukukenoids (creatures which float through the air like balloons, filter feeding on airborne spores and vegetation) lying around their neighborhood; Nekyez notes that they seem to have been dying off in droves as of late, though Rytor dismisses this as probably nothing and tells Nekyez not to worry their pack's young children. As they eat their day-meal, the subject of Project Hope comes up; they seem to be a bit bemused about Ikun's plans to launch an interstellar conquest (as Ntreyn points out, "the blue people always have crazy ideas") but they are hopeful about reports that Ikun is reviving its economy and will continue to remain a hyperpower, as they see Ikun and its military as bringers of peace and order, especially as they provided aid and peacekeeping some years ago when Adronkin was struck by a wave of deadly sandstorms. Llrien offhandedly mentions that she sometimes wishes that they were in Ikun and Rytor says that it would take a long time and be very difficult to get in, but concedes that it would probably be better for their young to grow up there.

2024.05.16 02:12 sheriffderek Massive Skill Gap: Are Coding Bootcamps and New Developers Missing the Mark? A recent chat with DonTheDeveloper.

A few weeks ago, someone posted a link to one of Don’s rants and I went through and commented on each of the points. I can't find that post, but I had copied it over here: https://www.reddit.com/perpetualeducation/comments/1c7k9re/donthedeveloper_on_a_rant_about_how_aspiring/
We had a chat about it. Here’s the video/podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHmqZkC3LqU&lc
Don titled it: There's a MASSIVE Skill Gap Among New Developers
I'll attempt to write a bit about that - (even though we went over many other topics - and I'm having a hard time grouping them)
It’s easy to simplify this into “the market” or “the boot camp” or “the tech stack” or "what's fair" or "the resume" - but I think people are missing the various multidimensional aspects at play. Is it:
Is it all of those things - and more? (Yes). And it's "the student" too." We're all different (cue reading rainbow moment). But it's true. Some of us are slower. Some of us are faster but miss the details. Some of us have a background that alignes neatly with tech. Some of us already know what job we want and why - and other people just want to make a good bet on a stable career. No matter what zone you're in, we still have to face the music - and deal with (trigger alert) - the truth.
The market is real. Companies aren't aggressively hireing random barely capable developers right now (like they have in the past). They're scared and holding on to their money. They also kinda realized they were spending more money on middle management and probably developers too - and are going to need some time to figure out how to make profitable businesses (or how to keep getting more VC funding to burn through).
But if there's a huge gap between your skills/experience and what it takes to do the job you're applying for, none of the other factors matter.
Many people choose a coding boot camp based on superficial factors like the price, the timeline, the website design, and the sales pitch. They often don't consider other important aspects because they simply don't know better. This isn’t unlike any other product or service or school.
Some people pick out a boot camp and learn a bunch of awesome stuff and they go out there and start a new career and for some reason, they don’t come back to Reddit to tell us about it. There are some legit colleges and boot camps and other alternative learning paths out there - that are really great. It's just a fact.
If you read the bootcamp marketing, paid your tuition, went through the steps they lined out, and came out the other end unable to get that job they promised you, well - that’s awkward. Maybe for you, it’s that simple. If you feel like you got a raw deal, I’m sorry. There are some businesses that should be ashamed of themselves - but they won't be. All you can do is warn other people. That’s over now. We can only work with the present.
For people who really want to work in this industry - they'll keep moving forward: at the end of the day, this is the playing field. So, if you want to get off the bench, we’re going to have to design a path to that – and you might need to rethink some of your assumptions.
It could certainly be said that new developers are now expected to know about–and have experience with–a lot more things.
Are the expectations that someone brand new to development is going to be able to get a job unreasonable? Well, does it matter what someone’s opinion about that is? You either want the job - or you don’t. And you need to know how to do the job, or no one will hire you. Do you need to know everything on this huge list to get an entry level position https://roadmap.sh/javascript ? (no) (in fact - close that - and don’t ever look at it again)
When I started (at the age of ~30) (in ~2011), you needed to know HTML, CSS, (Probably some PhotoShop to get your assets), maybe a little PHP (and likely HTTP and more about URLs and request types and forms), FTP and DNS to get your site hosted, and maybe some JavaScript. You might have used jQuery to help out or Knockout.js. And you had to know how to hook up a database and MySQL and probably a CMS or some sort. And maybe your code was a mess or maybe it adhered to some common patterns. But that was life. Not everyone needed to know all those things. Some people would focus more on getting the mockup into the HTML and CSS. Other people might focus on the server and the PHP or Perl or Java. There were all sorts of jobs and some of them were done by people with a formal education in Computer Science studies and other people just figured it out as needed. There was a lot of work to be done. Lots of custom stuff to build and maintain. And it was just normal to learn more incrementally as the years went by. You could totally get a job knowing just HTML and CSS (and you still can BTW). There was still an infinite amount of things you could know. But it seemed to ramp up naturally because we were closer to the grain of The Web.
So, what do people learn now? (Generally) They rush through some HTML and CSS really quick (which actually teaches them more bad habits than good). They rarely learn about DNS or FTP because a tutorial showed them how to type a few random things into a terminal to have their site on a free service and they don’t buy a domain name because there’s a free subdomain. Apparently paying for anything is for suckers and companies that don't give you things for free are evil capitalistic pigs who should be shut down. New devs don’t know much about servers because their text editor is actually running an advanced web application behind the scenes that starts a virtual server and runs all sorts of other things they don’t understand outside of that context - like connecting to version control, opening a terminal pane, SSH, code completion and typeahead, autoimport completion, AI suggestions and other additional layers like typescript and many other linters to tell them where all their errors are. If they couldn't use VSCode - they might be dead in the water. It can feel like you’re just a bag of meat being yelled at by VSCode as you try and solve the errors and remove all the red lines. And we do all of these - to put the training wheels in place.
And I’m not saying that a LAMP stack doesn’t have it’s own level of black-box and mysteries with how Apache handles your HTTP requests and MySQL starts up it’s own server - but we have to be comfortable with some level of abstraction or we’d be writing all ones and zeros at the machine code level.
So, the new developer is manning this huge stack of tools unknowingly, but they do get a lot of benefits. We can spin up a pretty complex web application with a front-end to make requests, a server to talk to a database and other third-party systems and respond back to the client/front-end, and an auth layer to make sure people are properly signing in and only seeing what they need to see. There are abstractions for HTML and CSS and JS that put that template logic and controller logic into a neat little component file (which is great) and that component file is properly registered based on file name conventions and everything gets set up in this larger system of conventions that all happen behind the scenes in the framework architecture. So, as a new developer - you can really ride the framework and know hardly anything about how it works - as long as you know the language to speak to this layer of the abstraction (the API).
These aren't just arbitrary add-ons that people made to complicate things. They solve real-world problems. The new dev won't really understand what they are - but I'm not saying we should just get rid of them. They allow us to move faster and to build interfaces and business logic without having to write tons of behind the scenes repeated structural code by hand. And with those training wheels, we have more time on our hands. We can also add in the chance to further define our programs with safety measures and plan automated testing routines, and built-in documentation of our code base. We can keep adding layers and layers or pull in more and more third-party tools. It’s pretty amazing. But what people end up learning is how to maintain that configuration - and there’s only so much time - and so, they end up learning 10% of all the things you used to need/want to know. And some jobs have a path for that. But there's likely going to be a long-term cost for you.
Arguably - it doesn’t matter how much “code” you know - and making things is what matters. And that’s true. That’s what matters to the business that pays you. And to the school that wants you to feel good about your progress. But I think you should protect your learning journey. It’s for you. It’s going to be what you carry on throughout the years and it’s a seed.
Getting proficient with a popular tech stack - when the market is booming proved to be a great decision for boot camps and their students. And I'd bet that the majority of people mean well.
But when it's not booming, students are in it for the wrong reasons, schools have tightened up and moved online, the market has plenty of devs who already have 5+ years working with that framework/stack -- then all of the sudden - the surface-level fake-it-till-you-make-it path (as much as I respect that) doesn't work as well. You're going to have to put in some more energy.
When it's obvious that you can't build an HTML page with semantic markup, that's accessible, and has a universally pleasurable experience, and you can't write CSS without a UI framework or do anything custom, it's obvious. You should be aware of that gap. When you've never owned a domain name or setup a deployment pipeline, you should be aware of that gap. When your personal website looks like your boot camp gave it to you, you should be aware of how that looks. When you can't take a server-side scripting language like Python or Go or PHP and build out a little personal website framework - you should be aware of that gap. When you can't plan a project and don't have experience with diagrams and explaining things, you need to be aware of that gap. When you've never written about your process or created any case-studies to explain your projects, you should be aware of that gap. When you're only proof of work is the class assignments, you should be aware of that gap. When your github history goes dead after the last day of class, you should be aware that we'll see that. When you claim to no nothing about visual design and that's for someone else on the team - you should be aware of that gap. If you refuse to turn on your camera and just want to be left alone, you should be aware of that huge gap. If you can't build a little prototype app without React, they you probably don't JavaScript, and you should be aware of that gap. And there will ALWAYS be a gap. There's always more to learn. So - it's an important skill to know what to learn and why - and when. You can't learn everything. And if you're having a hard time finding work right now, then get clear on your goal. Stop applying for general "Software engineer" jobs you aren't ready for. Narrow your scope. Figure out a job that you think you can do confidently. Get clear on how big your gap is and what you need to learn to get centered and confident with your toolset. Ideally, it's fun. Try and ignore all the doom and gloom and focus on your own personal goal.
It's not just the market. Too many people are applying for jobs they aren't anywhere near qualified to do. And it probably doesn't feel good. But luckily - you can learn the things and get back on track.

2024.05.16 01:57 Bhardz89 Arc on Windows 11.

Hello everyone, I would like to give you some background information before I ask a few generic questions just to see everyone else's experience with Arc on Windows 11, which I have been using for a few weeks now.
For system specs I am running a Core i5 13600KF + 32GB DDR5 6000MT/s CL40 + Z790 Steel Legend + Gammix S70 Blade Gen 4 2TB /w 2x 2TB 970 Evo Plus for storage and a RX 6600 8GB GPU at 1440p170 if that matters on Windows 11 Pro with latest drivers + updates and a tweaked OS for performance, as well as a 1000/50 cable internet hardwired connection. I use my desktop for gaming and web development.
I usually cycle between an array of browsers to test their updates, performance and functionality every 8-12 months. I've just recently added Arc to this (Edge, Vivaldi, Opera, Chrome, Firefox, Waterfox, Brave and Duckduckgo are the others.) and for the most part I've been enjoying it, and mostly still just messing around here and there with functionality and settings. There are some things I find odd, and would just like to know if anyone else is experiencing the same "issues".
  1. Performance. I'm not quite sure what's going on here but for the first week of using Arc the browser seemed quite fast to me but starting with week two it seems everything just loads much, much slower. I do have a myriad of extensions across all browsers, so most are setup with as much as the same extensions when possible to keep it as consistent across each browser. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this or if this purely due to extensions within Arc? I know most extensions are similar across each browser with Chromium based browsers being mostly identical for extensions but Arc is still it's own separate browser. It's probably the slowest browser I do have.
  2. I always have my web browsers remember previous sessions in case of unwanted crashing or other system related issues. Arc seems to not always bring back tabs that were opened previously, and if it does or I restart my system, web pages are white and blank until I hover my mouse over each individual element. Has anyone else experienced this?
Those are my my main two issues, the browser is relatively new on Windows compared to others so it's not the end of the world, and for the most part I love seeing a new browser in the space and testing it out. Keep up the good work! Thanks for reading my post.

2024.05.16 01:48 ravihpa Network connection lost 10 seconds before extraction?

Hey guys,
Ever faced a situation where all of you are at extraction, and just 10 or 15 seconds before you get inside the Pelican, your game sort of hangs, the screen goes blank and you're back in your ship and the message "Network connection lost" flashes on your screen?
This CANNOT BE a coincidence. This has happened to me a few times. And I'm getting the feeling that there are some players (who are host) are monitoring their incoming network connection on their PC and are somehow manually disconnecting you from their system right before extraction.
I faced one of those assholes today. He was a complete ass throughout the mission. He even destroyed my Mortar sentry when we were at extraction. I know my Mortar wasn't harming anyone. It was just there to finish my personal order.
I fortunately took a screenshot, so I know his username. His username is...
EDITED OUT - DON'T WANNA WITCHHUNT!
I am 100% sure he's pulling these kinds of shenanigans. I tried reporting him but got the message "Players can be reported if they have written something in chat that breaches the terms of service. This player has no chat messages to include in a report."
I am sick and tired of contributing to the entire mission, investing 40 mins of my life but by the end of it, it's getting wasted because someone is being a douche.
All I'm saying is my network connection getting lost 10 seconds before extraction SIMPLY CANNOT BE A COINCIDENCE.
These kinds of things should be monitored. A random occurrence can be understood, but if it happens quite a lot, that person should not be allowed to host other players.
At least let me report this kind of behavior. I'm sure this behavior can be easily seen by devs, and then they can warn such players and ban them if they do it again.
I love this game so much, but these things are happening at an increased frequency and devs really need to do something about it.
Thanks for reading. Have a nice day!

2024.05.16 01:23 Wan_Haole_Faka How much of this industry can be learned in an educational program compared to learning in the field? Is one better than the other?

I'm a 3rd year apprentice service plumber and am thinking about switching to a different trade. I'm considering refrigeration and boiler maintenance/install.
I think what draws me to this trade is the fact that you can work alone (how soon?), the general challenges of diagnosing and fixing something and I'm wondering how decent the money is as well.
I'm frankly getting a little bored with plumbing. I understand the systems that I work on. I just started with a new company and they unfortunately decided to pair me with someone who has less than half my experience and he's the "technician". So they pay me $22/hr. to train him, meanwhile I'm not building skills and am bored out of my mind. I could always memorize which shower cartridges go with what valve, but I think it would be wiser to gain a good understanding of the refrigeration cycle (which I know I can do) and apply that to my skillset.
This is the second plumbing company I've worked for and I've found it hard to get good training past a certain point. I learned a lot by making mistakes. I've found that the veteran guys will get put together because they can finish jobs faster and the newer guys seem to work together.
I do a lot of diagnostics on water heaters and sewage ejector pumps, so I know how to use a multimeter in a basic way. I went to a brief trade school for service plumbing and it helped me immensely. A lot of folks say that field experience is the only way, but I disagree. I believe that some learning is better suited to the classroom or living room. Something about being graded was a huge motivator for me to memorize wiring diagrams, troubleshooting steps, tolerances, whatever.
I could test for my license in NC immediately if I wanted to, or if I wanted to test for a national journeyman's, I could have it in 3 years. I'm not attached to being licensed in anything, I just want to earn a good income. I'd go back to school for an intensive program if it's worth it.
I'm 33 and single, so I'd be good with some late/on call work, but it's not something I'd like to make a habit of long-term.
Being in the South, I've never been involved with a labor union, but I'd be curious to know if there are any purely refrigeration unions. Would that just go along with pipefitting/HVAC?
I think it would also help me if I knew whether there were companies hiring directly from reefer programs and if so, would they guarantee a certain pay floor with a good grade?
I appreciate any tips you all have. Thanks!

2024.05.16 01:13 apartmentpremium [HL2 Mod] How to change the font of the main title?

Hello, I am new to this community.
Currently, I am creating my mod of Half-Life 2. And I am trying to change the font of the title.
I searched a little bit and found that I should change the font name of "ClientTitleFont" in "Steam/steamapps/sourcemods//resource/clientscheme.res".
However, even though I have changed them, the font does not seem to work, and still the title glitches. I tried multiple times removing my mod and re-copying it at "sourcemods", but still, the font does not seem to apply.
Would there be any other solutions to try to fix this?

2024.05.16 00:08 Jolly_Atmosphere_951 Why three seems nicer than two?

For some context: I really like flowers, all kinds of them. But if I go to the basic form, I've found that flowers with a number of petals that's a multiple of three (3, 6, 9) are more visually pleasant to me than petals in multiples of 2 (2, 4, 8).
Then there are the five petal flowers which for me are somewhere between the other two types.
This made me remember a painter friend who told me when painting people on a scene, there must be always an odd number of them.
Is there any reason for this? Am I the only one?
Here's a diagram for example (ignore the text, I couldn't find a blank one)

2024.05.15 23:40 shesareallykeen rant below

im a first year teacher teaching 9th grade at a school im miserable at. im transferring next year but im afraid im the problem. i came into teaching really excited and passionate, ive put in immense effort into my lessons, activities, and classroom and over the months ive just become cynical. ive felt like ive been a terrible teacher because i didnt know i was doing well until someone not at my school who observed me told me so. my school has never said a kind word to me and i thought i was the worst teacher there until i got a really high rating on my evaluations that even some veteran teachers dont get. even then though i just feel like ive gotten harsher and meaner. i teach math and i hold these kids to a high standard because i know they can meet it. they have a lot of math gaps and ive worked really hard to make the curriculum accessible for them and build difficulty up gradually. however theyre incredibly arrogant, lazy, and disrespectful. i have some good kids but i also have kids who refuse to do the work, complain when i assign them anything, and just cheat on every thing and then act like im a bad teacher because theyre failing especially when i catch them. i know covid has fucked them up and theyre more angry at struggling than at me but it still hurts. im young, this is my first big job, and im really hard on myself all the time. i just feel like all i do is be a terrible teacher and be harsh and cynical and that i have no redeeming qualities as an educator. ive had kids curse me out for holding them accountable and literally just making them stop cheating and they never say sorry but tell the admin they did when they get caught and then also say i never help them despite it being everything i fucking do. i just dont baby them and i dont do their work for them but im always always always helping. their parents are terrible and their kids literally act just like them. some are often respectful to my face and then go shittalk me and my other students tell me. i just feel like im bad at my job and i struggle to build these relationships so many other teachers can. i dont understand a lot of social cues and im awkward. i try to be playful but i just cant mesh with some of them. they have teachers way harsher and ruder than me but they have personalities the kids like so they like them while to them im just a bad difficult teacher picking on them for no reason even though all i do is grade their fucking math work and put it in the system and scold them when they go too far. im not even that harsh but it feels like i am. it doesnt help that the admin believe everything these kids say and never hold the kids accountable for anything. i feel paranoid and depressed and empty and everytime i leave school i feel like a husk of a human being who is mean and awful and horrible and fundamentally a terrible person who cant be nice to these kids even though i try so hard. i just dont tolerate their bs like phone usage, cheating, running around in my classroom yelling, being disrespectful to me or their classmates. i dont cower if they give me attitude; i usually just tell them point blank to stop very sternly. i give them very little homework and what i give is just required by the district to address math gaps. literally if you show up and pay attention youll be fine. i just dont know what to do. some kids like me, a lot dont and i cant take this constant disrespect. some of these kids even brag about the way they act and making me feel miserable. so many blame me for their failing even though i scaffold everything and they dont even try. i just cant help but feel like im the problem and that im just mean and harsh and awful and terrible at this. it doesnt help that i have ocd that forces me to ruminate and is also the kind of ocd that makes me both paranoid about being watched and scared that fundamentwlly im a terrible awful person. i just dont know what to do. i hope next year will be a new start but im scared im the problem. im trying my best and give so much lenience and help to these kids but theres those kids who wre just jerks, act terribly, blame me for failing despite me doing wverything to help them, and then tattle to the program head saying im mean and bad even though the program head doesnt believe them and knows how difficult they are! this school is so unsupportive and the admin are fucking awful. can i please have some i don’t know advice or words of encouragement from older teachers. im really sensitive and depressed and idk what to do. :,( im trying so hard. i put in so much effort to help them and make math accessible. theyre just mean and awful. i feel paranoid all the time

2024.05.15 23:15 SanMartianRover This is how boomers act with tech support. And this was someone that worked AT A CHURCH.

I've found that almost EVERY time I get a user who works for a church, they are incredibly rude, idiotic people who treat customer service like absolute trash. They are horrible. The worst insults I've gotten at this job have been from people who work at churches or realtors. Anyway, here's the transcript of our conversation today.
(03:43:30 PM) me: Hello! Thanks so much for contacting WEBSITE Support. My name is BLANK and I will be very happy to help you. Please allow me a few moments to access your account.
(03:44:16 PM) ID10T: BLANK--I'm thinking about switching PROJECT platforms because I cannot stand every single frickin time I want to access & make changes to my PROJECT , I have to go through 2 factor identification.
(03:44:24 PM) ID10T: I'm getting sick of it!
(03:44:36 PM) ID10T: And then it says, skip for 2 weeks--nope that doesn't work either!!!!!
(03:44:55 PM) ID10T: Get someone to shut down that security measure on our account.
(03:45:15 PM) ID10T: If someone wants to hack out account, I'm o.k. with that. Let them.
(03:45:55 PM) me: We can't turn that off, but there may be some reason the login cookie is getting deleted on your machine. WEBSITE uses a login cookie that expires after 2 weeks. If you clear this cookie, you will be required to login the next time you visit WEBSITE. If you have any kind of browser extension or anti-virus that clears cookies on an active basis, that could be clearing the login cookie for WEBSITE and causing you to be logged out. I suggest checking into that. This could be a behavior of the browser itself, an addon/extension of the browser, anti-virus on your computer or even apps/processes being run on your machine by your business (if you are not on a personal device). Also are you running AVG? In most cases, that is the anti-virus which is causing issues with the login cookie.
(03:46:43 PM) ID10T: I do not have this problem with ANY OTHER PLATFORM except WEBSITE
(03:46:48 PM) ID10T: and it's super annoying
(03:46:55 PM) ID10T: I don't even know what AVG is
(03:47:11 PM) me: It is anti-virus software. Are you on a personal machine?
(03:47:17 PM) me: Or is it managed by your organization?
(03:47:19 PM) ID10T: Just have one of your IT guys go into our account & deactivate all this crap
(03:47:37 PM) ID10T: my machine is managed by my organization
(03:47:44 PM) me: That's not how it works I'm sorry. The login is maintained by a cookie which gets saved to the device. If it's deleted, the login is not maintained.
(03:47:51 PM) ID10T: Actually, no, I think you would classify it as personal
(03:48:16 PM) ID10T: They why do I not have this problem with any other platform. Sometimes it logs me out within minutes
(03:48:24 PM) ID10T: then I have to get another code all over again.
(03:48:33 PM) ID10T: Can you not appreciate how annoying this is????????????
(03:48:37 PM) me: I do
(03:48:45 PM) me: I understand it's frustrating and I am talking you through the solution.
(03:48:56 PM) ID10T: It is super annoying. Annoying enough that I'm looking at Constant Contact just to be free from your stupid security
(03:49:00 PM) me: Are you running any privacy extensions in your browser?
(03:49:17 PM) ID10T: I have no idea about privacy extentions in my brows
(03:49:26 PM) ID10T: I'm not a computer scientist
(03:49:36 PM) ID10T: I just want to work on my fricken campaign!!!
(03:50:25 PM) ID10T: Turn it off! Get your IT guys to turn it off on our account. We don't care
(03:50:47 PM) me: That isn't an option. Are you running any anti-virus on your computer?
(03:50:50 PM) ID10T: Am I the only person who's frustrated as hell with this annoying blip in your system?
(03:51:07 PM) me: No, it has come up before which is why I know what causes the issue. I know it is frustrating. I am trying to help you.
(03:51:28 PM) ID10T: I have no idea if I have anti-virus software on my machine.
(03:51:51 PM) me: Are you working for a company that has IT available that could find out?
(03:52:16 PM) ID10T: Yes, but then I have to pay him $90/hour. Are you going to give me 6 months free to get this problem resolved?
(03:52:50 PM) ID10T: That feels like a good solution. Give me 6 months or even a year for free and you won't hear from me again. I'll pay to get your platform fixed!!!
(03:53:25 PM) ID10T: You know, it used work perfectly fine. We have been long, long customers of yours. And then, no...someone had to "FIX" the platform & now it sucks!
(03:54:44 PM) me: This is not an appropriate reason to provide credit, I'm sorry. Let's try this. Can you go to the profile icon in your account, click it, and at the bottom, it says Cookie Preferences. Click that and make sure all cookies are enabled. Let me know when that is complete.
(03:54:47 PM) ID10T: Sometimes i have to enter a code like 4 or 5 times a day
(03:55:24 PM) ID10T: well, it's stuck behind this chat window...
(03:55:35 PM) me: You can open WEBSITE in a new tab
(03:55:37 PM) ID10T: I'm not able to move the chat window? or am I
(03:56:52 PM) ID10T: I'm trying to find cookie preferences
(03:56:57 PM) ID10T: it's not jumping out at me...
(03:57:18 PM) me: It's at the bottom, here is a screenshot: [image]
(03:58:45 PM) ID10T: Essential Website Cookies Always Active
(03:58:53 PM) me: All of them are enabled?
(03:59:32 PM) me: Especially we want Performance and Functionality Cookies enabled
(03:59:36 PM) me: The little slider should be green
(03:59:50 PM) ID10T: Performance and Functionality Cookies I had to hit the slider on this one
(04:00:03 PM) ID10T: same with analytics & customization
(04:00:08 PM) me: Ok they were off?
(04:00:18 PM) ID10T: yes
(04:00:27 PM) ID10T: 2 of the were off... analytics & performance
(04:00:28 PM) me: The performance one is most important. That should fix it.
(04:00:49 PM) me: It MAY require you to verify one more time, but it should work for 2 weeks after that.
(04:01:16 PM) ID10T: OK BLANK. I guess I can't test it while I'm logged in here but I hopeyou are right.
(04:01:26 PM) me: I hope you have a wonderful day :)
(04:01:31 PM) ID10T: You too!
(04:01:32 PM) me: Thanks for contacting WEBSITE support. Have a great day.
They had cookies disabled.
Isn't it amazing how childish boomers are? Why do they think that being rude is the best option? They actively make the world worse with everything they do.

2024.05.15 22:46 the_eluder Transmission replacement update

Success!
I've been pulling my hair out the past two weeks because I had a check engine light for the throttle position sensor that was keeping the engine from running except at low rpm to charge the hybrid battery. I was still able to drive around the block on the electric motor up to about 30 mph.
So I replaced the throttle body and power pedal to no avail (both used, both returnable!) So I started tearing into the electrical system, bought a wiring diagram book. It arrived yesterday, so I checked all the wiring leading to the throttle body and discovered...a broken wire at the throttle body connector, but the insulation was good around it, so very difficult to see. I soldered it back together, and car is running just fine now. Took it for a spin around the block and it's running great.
Side note about transmission replacement - it's actually pretty easy as transmissions go. Most annoying part is you have to discharge the AC system as everything on the front of the car must be removed, then you lower the trans/engine package together and it slides right out the front of the car.

2024.05.15 21:06 AdAppropriate7838 Ceiling fan controls

Ceiling fan controls
Hi, I'm currently an EE student who just completed his 2nd year. I think my basic understanding of circuits and basic control processes got better this year. I worked on a couple of projects and this made me want to work on more so I keep thinking of different things and how they work. I'm pursuing my bachelor's in Canada but I'm from India where I'm currently visiting. In India there are ceiling fans with state switches to control the speed of the fan. This made me wonder how would the speed of the fan be controlled. I'll write down an explanation of how I think these could work. Please let me if I'm right or wrong.
My first thought was the fan will rotate using a motor and the motor will need varying amounts of currents through it for different speeds. At first I thought I could connect a summing amplifier to an H-bridge. Each turn of the switch would close another switch for the summing amplifier and which so it would output a higher voltage for each higher state. The summing amplifier would be connected to an H-bridge which would supply higher currents for higher voltages, thus making the fan rotate at different speeds. But while writing this post it occurred to me an H-bridge might be an overkill for a ceiling fan (my mind went to an H-bridge as it's pretty much the only control system I've worked with).
My second thought was I could just connect one end of the motor to the output of the summing amplifier and the other to ground as it just rotates one way and the motor would just act as a resistor with different current flowing through it, as shown in the image I've attached. With each turn of the switch of the fan, one of the switches in the diagram would close.
Please let me know if I right or wrong! Thanks!

2024.05.15 20:44 Ok_Following6440 Update - 2nd Neurology Assessment

Well, I've now had a 2nd neurologist tell me I don't have ***. When I mentioned the fear of MND has essentially consumed my life for the past 9 months he literally laughed. I seriously hope this is the path to accepting these symptoms are truly benign, and I can focus on improving my mental health. For context, I had my first neurological assessment at 11.5 months of twitching and today's appointment would be approximately 16.5 months.
I previously stated I was referred for a second EMG on my upper limbs due to hand fasciculations, but after the clinical evaluation I didn't even opt for it. I only had another NCS that showed very mild carpal tunnel in my left hand, but otherwise nothing of significance. The doctor then performed all the strength, reflex, and sensory tests on my upper body that he felt necessary and there were no signs of concern. He wasn't even worried about the fact that I can illicit some fasciculations by lightly pinching my index finger and thumb. When he said "I could perform the EMG if you truly insist, but some find it very uncomfortable in their hands, and I honestly don't find it necessary," I felt like this needed to be the turning point where I begin to fully trust the medical advice I've been given.
This is now the 2nd neurologist who has said when it comes to *** clinical evaluations are equally, if not more important than EMG's. They know how to detect clinical weakness, and they know what real atrophy looks like. I'm not even someone with huge, muscular hands, and when he examined my FDI muscles (what I was freaking out about) he said I had "excellent muscle bulk for the size of my hands." Seeing as I had an EMG back in December, I asked point blank if an EMG can be done too early. He said "I don't like to speak in absolutes, but it is extremely unlikely and I have never come across a case where an EMG was performed too early." However, he did say that he's seen several cases where someone had obvious weakness in one limb and *** type characteristics were picked up on an EMG in a different limb that had yet to experience weakness. Thus, reiterating that EMG's are highly sensitive and do not miss *** when it is present. Another point the neurologist made is that he has never seen a case where fasciculations were the first noticeable symptom. He didn't say it's impossible for this type of presentation, but for someone to be twitching for several months or longer without detectable signs of objective weakness basically rules out ***. Any neurologist who is trained to perform and interpret EMG's will know when fasciculations are the result of something sinister.
I asked about the correlation between COVID and neuro-muscular symptoms, but I didn't receive a concrete answer. He admitted viral infections can impact everyone differently and that COVID could very well have long-term implications for some, but he didn't know of any clinical evidence or studies to suggest a direct link between COVID and BFS. That being said, I truly believe COVID is what triggered all of this and that I'll just have to live with these symptoms until my nervous system hopefully heals. At least now I can accept I'm not facing a terminal disease.
My only advice to anyone struggling with a similar situation is do your best to trust the medical advice you've been given. If your doctor doesn't believe a neurology referral is necessary, believe them. If a neurologist clears you, believe them. I'm probably going to stick around this forum to help ease people's anxiety, but I'm hopefully done with the fearful and reassurance seeking questions.
All the best everyone!

2024.05.15 20:25 Invidat Luke/Rey TLJ Rewrite (#8183531)

Let's start with why did Luke disappear. Not only is the reason provided in TLJ, as we all know, completely out of character, but it also makes no sense with the information we have, since we know he left a FUCKING MAP to his location. So we need a new reason for him to have left.
The simplest answer is to have him leave because he either needs to find/protect something. So here's what happened in this rewrite: Ben was Luke's best student. He had power in the force that could at times rival even Luke himself, and he was immensely proud of him. Ben, thinking that as he was the nephew of the Great Luke he was strong enough to resist the dark side, began to research it to find more knowledge. This put him into contact with Snoke. Slowly, he began to fall and also began to corrupt some of the other start students as well (these would become the Knights of Ren).
Luke could sense that something was wrong, but due to his pride in Kylo, he ignored it for the most part, thinking it wasn't a major concern and that he could put him back on the right path. While this was going on, new students would continue to arrive, including a young girl. This girl, from some random planet in the Republic, also showed immense potential, to the point that Luke decided to train her personally, alongside some other young students that showed potential (for fun, let's add pre-season 3 Grogu to this list). This increased attention further blinded him to the growing danger.
Then, one night, Kylo and the Knights struck. They attacked the Temple with elements of the First Order, killing many of the students and with the goal of killing Luke. Luke, however, unknown to Kylo and the Knights (as he had taken some precautions and began to tell them false information about his activities.) was away at the time with his group of students. Upon returning, he is attacked, but manages to fend Ren and his men off. However, these were the best and most powerful students he had trained, and while he would be able to defeat any of them in a one on one, even he couldn't take on all 6/7 (I forget how many), combined with his desire to not harm them as they are his family and students. So he flees and takes his small group of surviving students with him.
Luke realized that he would no longer be safe. Ever since the Republic learned of his and Leia's heritage, they had lost a lot of support and protection, and a large number of Imperial Remnant and supporters still in Republic space meant that hiding in public would only endanger more lives. So, he crafts a plan. He will intentionally lead the Knights of Ren on a wild goose chase. Kylo knows Luke and knows he cares greatly for his students, so he thinks that Luke will keep them close. Luke, understanding this, decides to instead separate and hide them throughout the galaxy. He wipes their minds of the events that happened (doing so suppress their force powers and as such their ability to be detected) and leaves them on various out of the way and safe locations. This is how Rey ended up on Jakku, as it was an incredibly out of the way place. He paid that junk dealer A LOT to make sure she stayed safe (with various threats about what would happen to him if he didn't). Rey's mind then filled in the blanks about her "parents" as a reason for WHY she was there (essentially, she only remembers a ship leaving, so she naturally assumes it was her parents, combined with some deep memories of Luke being like a father to her during her time at the temple).
Luke then left a Map to his location with R2 and the other guy (let' say he was a historian or something), thinking that it was safer with them instead of Leia and Han to both keep them safe and further keep it hidden (the other guy willingly goes into hiding and makes it clear he has the map). He then disappears into the unknow regions, looking for the Jedi Homeworld to gain more power and wait for the day his students return to him.
Now, there was a problem that he didn't expect. You see, when he arrives on Ach-too, he finds out some troubling information. There was a reason the Jedi Left and hid the location. Back in the early days of the Jedi, there was a civil war. While originally practitioners of the Light, some Jedi delved deeper into their emotions and lust for power. They discovered the Dark Side. Eventually, these Dark force users gained more power and attempted to destroy the Jedi, this ravaged the planet and much of the surrounding systems. In the end, the Jedi triumphed and these Dark Siders, now known as "Sith" fled. Ach-too, thousands of years later, is still bearing the scars of this conflict and the atrocities committed.
Luke, already feeling like he failed due to what happened with Kylo, is further disheartened to see that this Jedi/Sith war has been literally going on for tens of thousands of years, and that it brings such destruction. In addition, the dark side energy left on Ach-too begins to influence his mind, causing these emotions to grow more inside him. He eventually realizes what's happening, but by then the only thing he can do is cut himself off from the force completely. But the damage is already done. He falls into despair, his negative emotions consuming him and he comes to believe that the best thing for the Galaxy is for the Jedi to cease to exist.
This is where Rey shows up. She still doesn't know much about Luke, but her powers and memories are beginning to return (this is why she sees flashes when holding Luke's saber, the crystal recognizes her and is trying to return her memories, also the saber is Luke's green saber, which he lost while he fled). The memories make no sense to her though and she thinks they are just visions from what happened through the saber. When they meet, Luke of course has no idea who she is, but begins to piece it together (Jakku, her power, knowledge of things she shouldn't know, etc.) This further explains his desire to convince her to give it up, as he doesn't want her to endanger herself. Rey eventually remembers what happened, and is angry both at her memory being whipped, and at Luke for having abandoned her for so long, leaving afterwards to go face Kylo. From here, there doesn't really need to be any major changes from what already happened. The only thing is that I would change the Yoda scene slightly to explain why he's showing up NOW (something about how the Light has gained enough power to finally push through the darkness shrouding the planet, alongside Luke, if unknowingly, reopening himself to the force thanks to his time with Rey.) Yoda destroys the tree, going into detail about how there was a reason for why the Jedi left the books to begin with, that the knowledge in them just wasn't necessary. He then provides the failure lesson, saying that just as Luke had learned from the mistakes of the past (we can spend some time with Luke's jedi order, showing that they were more open with their emotions and attachments), so to will she and the students that come after her. And that now he has a chance to learn once again and guide Rey on the right path (here, she's still focused on killing Kylo for revenge).
Then, we get to the end. Again, plays out mostly the same, except that before Luke disappears completely, he appears before Rey. He says he's proud that she's remained strong and good natured, and that he's sorry for what he did. He hopes that she will do better. And before he's gone completely, he shares with her, through that mind thing (though this one consensual unlike what Kylo did to her and Poe) the planets that he left the other students on. He tells her that she needs to find them, and that only together can they hope to finally defeat Kylo, the Knights, and the First order. And that he leaves the future of the Jedi to her and them, before becoming one with the force.
