2024.05.16 04:50 TheForce122 I figured out who created SARS-COV-2

I figured out who created SARS-COV-2
Nathan Wolfe (Rothschild-Epstein-Maxwell asset) of DARPA/EcoHealth/Gates Foundation ran the COVID-19 creation operation with Peter Daszak of EcoHealth via the Global Virome Project (Wuhan Lab). Nathan Wolfe dedicated his book "Viral Storm" to Israeli spy Jeffrey Epstein and Bill Gates and is BFF with Israeli spy Ghislaine Maxwell.

"COVID-19 might have started to spread in September 2019 in the United States: study"https://archive.is/NpOqY
On the 12th Sep 2019, the main database of samples and viral sequences of the Wuhan Institute of Virology went offline. Eventually every single of the 16 virus databases managed by the WIV was taken offline.
https://archive.is/i79eW
Here's former CDC director Robert Redfield under oath before the Congress on Wuhan Lab September 2019 events:
https://www.youtube.com/live/aXXWRaM-sWQ?feature=share
I will say if you go back and look, it's declassified now, and I'm sure you all have your classified briefings, but the declassified information now:
In September of 2019, three things happened in that lab, one is they deleted the sequences, that was highly irregular, researchers don't usually like to do that
Second thing they did was they changed the command and control of the lab from the civilian control to the military control. Highly unusual, and I've been involved in dual use labs when I was in the military.
And the third thing they did which I think is really telling is they let a contractor redo the ventilation system in that laboratory. So I think clearly there was strong evidence that there was a significant event that happened in that laboratory in September. It's now been declassified, you can read it. I'm sure there's more classified information around it.
Scientist Richard Ebright
The relevance of this is that SARS Cov-2, the pandemic virus, is the only virus in its entire genus of SARS-related coronaviruses that contains a fully functional cleavage site at the S1, S2 junction. And here is a proposal from the beginning of 2018 [from Fauci/Gates-funded EcoHealth Alliance] proposing explicitly to engineer that sequence at that position in chimeric lab- generated coronaviruses.
Eminent Virologist David Baltimore of CalTech
When I first saw the furin cleavage site in the viral sequence, with its arginine codons, I said to my wife it was the smoking gun for the origin of the virus. These features make a powerful challenge to the idea of a natural origin for SARS2.
Former CDC Director Robert Redfield:
I was concerned because of the presence of the furin cleavage site that we've talked about and I think it's important to understand what that cleavage site does. That cleavage site totally changes the orientation of the binding domain of COVID, so where before it could not see the ACE2 receptor which is the human receptor, it totally changes the orientation now so it has high affinity for human receptors. So that furin cleavage site bothered me, it didn't seem like it belonged there.
And then if you look at the sequences they use in those 12 nucleotides for arginine, where the arginine sequence nucleotide triplet were coded for humans. So why did it have the arginine coding for humans and not bat? It was very disconcerting to me. It looked like this virus was engineered.
It's not scientifically plausible that this virus went from a bat to humans and became one of the most infectious viruses that we have for humans.
Scientist Valentin Bruttel:
I tried to raise awareness to this for a year now. WIV use BsaI and BsmBI/Esp3I sites before to make synthetic WIV1 variants. And exactly those sites appear in a "silently introduced, perfect for synthetic assembly" pattern in SARS2, but non of its nat. relatives.
seriously, what is the chance that exactly those type IIs restriction appear or disappear through random evolution in a Banal-20-52 like virus? 5-6 precise mutations in 30000bp? about 1 in 1020! SARS2 is clearly synthetic!
Type Ils restriction sites prove a synthetic origin
Synthetic RNA viruses are assembled at the DNA level and later transcribed. 30,000 nucleotides cannot be synthesized in one go. These viruses are therefore assembled from smaller, 2- 8,000 nucleotide long pieces. Specific DNA restriction sites are often added to later reassemble the individual building blocks in the correct order. It is also technically possible to hide these interfaces (No See'em), but this was not done in the WIV.
In a 2017 paper, two very specific, particularly suitable type Ils restriction enzymes were used at the WIV. These have the advantage that they can produce different DNA overhangs (sticky ends), which are crucial for a correct assembly of the complete genome: Bsal and BsmBI.
SARS2 shows a Bsal and BsmBI restriction site pattern which is ideal for assembling synthetic viruses and to later replace the spike protein or furin cleavage site.
Bsal and BsmBI restriction sites also exist in closely related viruses (Banal20-52, RaTG13), but these are distributed in such a way that an artificial virus could never be generated using the methods established at WIV 2018/19.
The probability that the required 5 synonymous mutations, which enable a synthetic assembly of SARS2, arose purely by chance is less than 1 in 1020 or about as likely as winning the lottery jackpot 3 times in a row.

2024.05.16 03:33 BeautifulAlbatross36 How much do residency programs care about extracurriculars?

I’m a D2 and haven’t been super involved in anything up until this point, although I’m interested in specializing.
I’ve done some volunteering, tutoring, and research (no publications), but am just not really interested in any clubs/holding a leadership position just for the sake of adding something to my CV. I’m not 100% sure what I’d like to do, but am considering perio or anesthesia.
Does anyone know what weight extracurriculars really hold when being considered for residency?

2024.05.16 03:08 gregterlecki Hello music producers of r/ericprydz!

Figured I'd post here because I feel the producers of this reddit might have some well tailored production expertise that might (hopefully) suit the kind of sound I'm going for.
Do any of you have recommendations for good sample libraries or preset packs? Or even a good place to browse for them that isn't splice? (unless any of you have strong recommendations for it).
I'm looking to up my production game, so I figure looking for new sound sources in new places might help me get inspired. I got some vengeance stuff a little while ago but to me it sounds so commercial / over-engineered, so I'm looking for sounds that have a more unique character to them.
Also, if any of you have any favourite plugins for adding sparkle / shine / pop to your sounds, or any other really cool effects plugins you can recommend to give my production some character, I'd love to hear about them!
Would love to connect! Thanks everyone 🙏

2024.05.16 02:47 Educational_Wave4824 Any advice for optometry scholarships? Specifically for UHCO. (Stats included) *edited and shortened*

THIS IS A SHORTED VERSION OF A PREVIOUSLY DELETED POST: I post this earlier today but it was very long and not well articulated. I am really looking for advice and have spent quite some time trying to convey what I’m working with.
I just finished my junior year of undergrad. I am chem major and biology minor. I put in a lot of work and am really hoping it pays off w financial assistance. I’m sharing stat summaries and background info to hopefully gain some help/advice.
SUMMARY: To simplify it, so far I’ve been a full time student (~15 hrs), working two jobs as a tutor assisting up to Calc II, Intro to Stats, Gen chem, & O Chem as well as TA for Gen Chem lab. All whilst being in two officer position w/ two dif orgs. I then got another lab to TA and a promotion (Tutoring Team Lead & adding an O chem to TA) on top of the previously mentioned responsibilities. I have a GPA of 3.88 (3.97 for pre req), 240+ hours of research (+150 more planned for this summer), 300+ volunteer hours (some health care/some not), ~35 shadowing hours, in honors college, will be university scholar and ACS certified by graduation. I took my first year of college and senior year of HS simultaneously. I ended HS as 3rd ranked and various academic accomplishments if that is considered in application.
BACKGROUND: All this to be said, I am first gen college student from an ‘economically disadvantaged’ family of 7, I have had 4 siblings who’ve all tried college and have flunked out. In Spring ‘25 I will be the first person from either side of my family to earned a bachelors. (My dad never finished HS and none of my grandparents even finished middle school). I primarily worked so hard to eleviate some financial requirements. I found a passion for optometry/eye care due to having refractive and strabismic amblyopia from 8y/o to 16y/o until I got corrective surgery.
HELP/ADVISE: My top pick is UHCO but I am applying to both optom schools in tx and the one in oklahoma. I hate to have put in all this work for no compensation and am curious as what to do?
Plz suggest personal statement or secondary app essay idea, scholarships based off any of this info, etc. It would be so appreciated!!!

2024.05.16 02:33 Mermaid_Natalia Wanted: Guide

I played MUDs waaaaayyyyyyyy back in the day, like on DOS. I was just a kid, so I didn't get it, but also I was obsessed. I want to try again, but I just don't know how. Sure, the guides here are helpful, but I need a human element!
WANTED: GUIDE Seeking a patient guide, who wouldn't mind lending their time to a noon. I'm hoping for a roleplay-first experience, with systems to back it up for added stakes. Open to any genre.
If you're at all interested, please let me know!
Edit: if it wasn't clear, I'm seeking a person guide. Like, a travel guide, a docent, a sensei, a tutor, etc.

2024.05.16 00:16 maguirre007 [WTS] Leonardo Momento Zero Andromeda Rhodium, Walltown Pens Watts Slim Special Sauce Satin, Drewnem Pisane Magic Garden demonstrator, Esterbrook JR Capri Blue

Hi everyone :)
Today I'm selling a few pens because unfortunately I'm in need of funds to pay my bills and as such I've have chosen to declutter my pen collection.
I'm located in Australia so all prices are set in AUD. Worldwide shipping $25 AUD (unless it actually costs me less to ship to your country).
Verification and album
To sweeten the deal for you, I'll include some ink samples :)
These are the pens I have for sale:
Leonardo Momento Zero Andromeda (1.5mm stub nib, glossy body) with Rhodium trim from Stilo e Stile number 248/260 [A1] $350 AUD SOLD This pen is brand new, never been inked or tested. I have the box and the little booklet that came with it.
Walltown Pens Watts Slim with Special Sauce (1.1mm stub Jowo nib, satin body) [A1] $200 AUD Really nice pen, disappointed to let it go. Box, sticker and pen card included.
Drewnem Pisane Magic Garden 57 demonstrator (M Bock nib; matte body) [C] $150 AUD This pen is pretty cool, I got this particular one because the back of one of the flowers looks kind of alien-like but you might disagree haha. The body has discoloured a bit over time due to the nature of the material but I'm certain if you buff it with a polish it'll look brand new. I polished it with a wet cloth and it really improved how it looked. Box included.
Esterbrook JR Capri Blue (1.1mm stub nib; glossy body) [C] $80 AUD This is a pretty nice looking pen. I did have some issues with it some time ago where it skipped but it's currently inked with Pilot Carbon Black and it writes quite well now. I wrote the verification with it. SOLD
I'm sorry, I've become quite bad at writing descriptions now since I haven't been involved in the FP world in a while and haven't used them in this time either. However, I'd be more than happy to answer any questions and provide any additional images or videos.
Thank you!
Edit: added link to photos!

2024.05.15 23:53 JellyfishAway5658 Cured After 22 Long Years - Success Story

Hi all. Long-time BB sufferer here, having suffered for over 22 years (since 2002 at the age of 16 or 17). I am now turning 39 years old this later year.
Like many on here, I have explored countless routes to investigate the cause of my BB to try and cure it. I thought it came from my nose (post-nasal drip), my gut (acid reflux), allergies, and dry mouth. In the end, it was none of these things. Here are some things I had done while trying to cure my BB, based on what I thought were the causes:
Around last year, I came across an ad on social media for Bristle, for testing of the oral microbiome. The company said something that was really critical to my journey: that 90% of halitosis cases stem from the mouth and the oral microbiome. Because we BB sufferers are always so good with our oral hygeine regimens, it's natural for us to assume the cause is something else apart from the mouth, which is why we tend to investigate sinuses, gut issues, and so on. However, more likely than not, in over 9 out of 10 cases, it has to do with an imbalance of bacteria in the mouth.
I took the test, and discovered that I had really high levels of two or three halitosis-causing bacteria, that reside in the gum line: Fusobacterium Nucleatum, Prevotella Intermedia, and Tannerella Forsythia. In addition to this analysis, the Bristle team offered a treatment plan and recommended that I use SmartMouth Clinical Strength mouthwash for 2 weeks, and afterwards, repopulating with oral probiotics for several months, to try and change my oral microbiome over time. I tried using the SmartMouth mouthwash, and it helped somewhat for sure, but only temporarily. I knew that it was doing something, and ended up going off the deep end: spending hundreds of dollars more on SmartMouth mouthwash over the course of several months, because I became dependent on it to mask my BB enough for me to go out of the house.
After some further investigation, I came across a different oral microbiome test that was based out of Canada, called OraVital. Similar to Bristle, OraVital does a microbiome test via saliva, and comes back with results (which in my case, matched the same bacteria I had discovered in the Bristle test). However, additionally, they offer a 3 week antibiotic treatment plan (amoxicillin/metronidazole mouthwash and gum ointment), followed by chlorhexidine mouthwash. This was much stronger than what Bristle offered. I did the treatment, and it helped enormously when I was on it. However, sadly, the BB returned when I completed the antibiotic solutions. I was sad and defeated once again.
Next, I came across a third oral microbiome test, by a company called Viome, called the Oral Intelligence Test. This test does the saliva sample, but doesn't give you a list of the bacteria they find. However, they give you an oral probiotic lozenge that is supposed to be custom for you. I noticed the strength of the oral probiotic lozenge to be 30 billion CFU. This was a clue for me, because other probiotic lozenges that I came across online were only in the range of 3-6 billion CFU. The fact that this was 30 billion meant that more probiotic bacteria were needed to combat the problem.
I ended up taking the Viome oral probiotic lozenges for some time, but experienced only modest results. However, they did help somewhat with my morning breath when taken before bed. But the BB always came back.
Over the course of time, it dawned on me. This problem is more severe. It requires more effort to remove the bad bacteria, and more effort/strength to repopulate with good probiotic bacteria.
It was then that I had a revelation that made all the difference. Instead of relying on oral probiotic lozenges, with their relatively minimal strength, why not use extremely high doses? I resorted to trying probiotic powder instead of lozenges. The dosages in some of these powders was over 100 billion CFU per scoop.
The Bristle test indicated that the bad bacteria I have were sensitive to reuterin, which is produced by the probiotic L. Reuteri. I came across L. Reuteri powder on Amazon. Additionally, I came across L. Salivarius powder as well, which a probiotic that produces a compound called saliviricin that kills bad bacteria as well.
I began taking these two powders in the mouth, mixed with a bit of water (only a little bit, so that they do not get diluted). I also use water because I feel like this helps the probiotics swish through the gum lines, which is where my bad bacteria resides. Within 1 week of doing this, multiple times a day, I noticed a massive improvement. I knew I was onto something, and something big. I continued to do this for a couple of weeks, and noticed my breath getting better and better over time. However, it was not completely eliminated. I figured it would just need to be something that I would use before I went out. However, I noticed the improvement to be getting progressively better after 3 weeks, and then 4.
One thing to note here is that, for the probiotic bacteria to have optimal effect, you need to clean your mouth and tongue before using them. I read in a scientific study that they found probiotics had a significantly higher benefit when used after tongue scraping/brushing. I use both a tongue brush and then a tongue scraper, before I do the probiotic rinse. I also do not eat or drink water for at least 30 min after rinsing.
Within weeks of doing this, I noticed the bad taste in my mouth was gone, when I tried to search for it. My perceived 'dry mouth' was gone, and my saliva flow had increased significantly. I always thought I had dry mouth, but I came across scientific articles online which suggested that the bad bacteria is what was actually causing that feeling. Bad bacteria change the pH of your mouth and cause that taste and feeling of dryness. They reduce salivary flow.
I was encouraged by the results, and I then started doing additional research. There were other healthy probiotic strains out there that were good for the oral microbiome and for combatting bad bacteria. One that I came across was Weissella Cibaria. This bacteria is naturally found in the mouth, and can colonize it. L. Reuteri and L. Salivarius, on the other hand, are just passing through the mouth and do not stay there. Therefore, they can help the oral microbiome by killing bad bacteria, but do not have a permanent residence there. If you don't have a solid presence of good bacteria in the mouth, the bad bacteria that is wiped out can grow back. This is what happens when we use antibiotics. Sure, they're able to kill off bad bacteria, but even the small remnants can multiply back rapidly if there are not enough good bacteria to outcompete it. To get Weissella Cibaria, I found an oral probiotic lozenge that has a patented form called OraCMU:
Additionally, Weissella Cibaria is also present in probiotic foods like Sauerkraut and Kimchi, but UNPASTEURIZED only (pasteurizing kills all beneficial bacteria). I switched my diet to high in soluble fiber and fermented foods on a DAILY basis. This includes apples, celery, carrots, sauerkraut, kimchi, and yogurt. I eat a big bowl of some of these foods mixed up, at least once a day, for lunch. I also incorporated fiber gummies to ensure I am getting the adequate amount of fiber the probiotics need to grow in the oral microbiome (they need a type of fiber called fructooligosaccharides to prosper and grow).
I have gotten really big into fermented foods. I am constantly on the hunt for fermented foods and will try to have them whenever and wherever I can, as much as I can. They're not the most appetizing, and can smell pretty bad, but they are working to permanently shift my oral microbiome over time. I even got a yogurt maker off Amazon and began making my OWN L. Reuteri yogurt using a starter culture, half and half, and fiber powder (inulin). This will help create a lasting effect to permanently alter my oral microbiome to prevent bad bacteria from ever coming back.
The role of probiotics in curing oral imbalance cannot be understated. I have read multiple studies relating to probiotic research regularly, which has only begun exploding in the scientific industry in recent years. This is a really exciting time. After years of very limited progress on fixing halitosis, it seems that probiotics is the solution to combating the issue. One thing to note is that it takes time to rearrange your oral microbiome. It didn't get this way overnight. Getting out of it is the same.
In addition to populating the mouth with good bacteria, it is EQUALLY important to keep up with a regimen to clear the mouth of the bad bacteria, which must be done regularly and in parallel with the probiotic regimen. Every morning and night, I do the following routine:
Also want to emphasize the absolute importance of going to the dentist for cleanings as many times as your insurance covers. For decades, I did not visit the dentist, going years on end without cleanings. These treatments are essential for breaking up biofilms and plaques of all the colonies of bad bacteria. If untreated over time, they become more resilient and grow rapidly. They build protective shells around their communities which allow them to grow rampant and overpower the good bacteria of the oral microbiome. It is critical to go, and have the calculus and plaque disrupted and removed. Even if you don't experience relief from one or two cleanings, it needs to be done. It is the progressive effect over time that will cure the condition. Removing bad bacteria overtime while populating with good bacteria -- a one-two punch.
And that's about it. That's where I'm at now, and I will continue doing this routine for the coming year, because I have seen in the past how resilient this bad bacteria is. My goal is to continue hammering it down with probiotics, and not just to wipe it to oblivion, but to build a healthy diverse microbiome of good bacteria that will prevent it from ever growing back and out of control again. I still experience halitophobia - the fear of bad breath and reactions - even though I don't experience any. My mouth is moist and sweet. My saliva is flowing. But the fear of a reaction is a psychological condition, because it is what I've known for 20+ years. I hope to be able to shake it off over time through many positive interactions.
Good luck to all and God Speed!
Edit: If trying the probiotic rinses, I advise against swallowing the rinse afterwards. Please spit it out. The reason for this is that, if ingested, it would get absorbed into the gut microbiome. For a couple of doses, this wouldn’t be an issue. But if you were to take several hundreds of millions of probiotics everyday, over the course of several weeks, this could possibly have a detrimental effect on your gut microbiome. Ideally, you would just want the probiotics to apply to your ORAL microbiome, and not your gut microbiome.

2024.05.15 23:18 DNALab_Ratgirl PBA turned yellow??

Hello everyone!
I work in an industrial recycling lab, and I often need to test to see if samples coming in have cyanide in them. I do a distillation/coloration is accordance with EPA Methods 901C and 9014 I'm relatively new, and so far haven't had any real issues, until today, when making Pyridine Barbituric Acid for the coloration portion (6% Barbituic acid, 30% pyridine, 6% HCl). It was BRIGHT yellow. As long as I've worked here, PBA has always been a dark peach/orange color. I knew it wasn't right but I added it to my benchtop QCs anyway just to see (science, you understand, haha). They were ALL bright yellow. Instead of purple, the method high and method low turned shades of red, as they had cyanide. Super cool looking, also super wrong, lol.
My manager is also confused as to how it could have gotten so wonky. I'm thinking maybe during the process of making it I overheated the barbituic acid and burnt it? Hard to say. I'm going to try again tomorrow but if anyone has any troubleshooting ideas I'd love to hear them!

2024.05.15 23:04 camerawn [CA] [High School] -Looking for help with foster-ish situation. Trying to get info from her teachers and admin, but most won't talk to me because I'm not legal guardian.

Situation: 15yo girl(no blood relation), my grandmother(80yo) is her guardian. "B" started living with my wife and I(early 30s) 6 weeks ago. Full story: Parents were on and off drugs, in and out of jail types. Dad passed just a couple weeks after she moved in. Mom is on the streets, most likely. B was being raised by her grandmother, a friend of my gma. B's gma passed when she was 3. My gma took her in. Has raised her for about 12yrs. has legal guardianship. When I was 20 and B was a bratty kid(I now realize she was dealing with trauma) , I didn't care much for her. Our relationship has evolved from "cousins" to uncle/niece to more like fathedaughter.
Grandma let her move in with us. B has usually struggled with school for a while. Got in to some bad habits in 8thgrade. Ditching class kinda stuff. We found vapes (nic and thc) I and wife moved back to town 2 yrs ago, so we kind of only saw her at summers and Christmas for 8 years, so we've kinda been out of the loop most of her school years. Only know what grandma shared.
Highschool has been more of a challenge. I knew her grades were bad. told gma to bring her to our house after school. My wife and I both have education degrees(wife is a SPED aide about to start her credential program and I used to teach 6th grade). She came over for tutoring/ homework advice a couple times. I've gone to grandma's house a few times. It's just tough when I'm working full time+ and still have to do upkeep on our own house. Gma lives 20 minutes away, which isn't much, but hard to get there every/ every-other day.
ALL that to say: Since she started living with us, i've really stepped up how involved i've been with school. I'm running into issues where staff won't talk to me. And I'm looking for advice from other educators.
examples of some of the issues/interactions:
-Day 2 after spring break(she moved in during) she has an IEP meeting. Grandma had already requestd I be included. Day 1, I tried asking the office if they can resend grandma a copy so she can share it with me. I and my wife wanted to see her previous accommodations before the IEP the next day. Registrar says she can't give it to me. I Know. I just want to make sure her guardian has a copy and it isn't lost in a file box or in email. I kinda raised my voice and ended up having a convo with her sped case worker.
-a week ago, I'm trying to get her unofficial transcript to send to a charter school. Gma had it on her phone, but her phone is frustrating to use with the text enlarged. I try pulling it up to print at work so she can run it back to the school around the corner. I call the parent help center to find out what the transcript is under on the parentvue site. He said he has to talk to gma as the ed rights holder. FERPA doesn't cover how to use an app, right? Saw him in person yesterday before another IEP meeting. He remembered me because I told someone else he wouldn't help me. (he didn't help because he didn't know where the "print transcript" button was after I had gma say "hi" on speaker)
-Registrar says there's no release of information that guardian can sign. No FERPA waiver or way to extend me to be included. Have to go to the courts and be added as her legal guardian(haven't started that lengthy process). says parent help center did the right thing by not telling me how to access the transcript.
-grandma told me to arrange a meeting with me, her and counselor(re:summer school) because I work and she is retired with a wide open schedule. Called school. explain, relays to counselor. secretary said counselor can only talk to gma. I explain that she told me to make the appt. She will be at the meeting i'm trying to schedule. secretary relays and then the counselor gets on the phone. We make an appt. I understand he is limited in what he can tell me, but he wouldn't even take my call.
-we saw AP after that counselor meeting. explained the situation. He said that they could get sued giving the info. (who would the school get sued by? guardian wants me to have the info!) He gave me a caregiver's affidavit. since she is living with me, I can get the day-to-day info from teachers that i'm wanting. Later he calls me, says he looked into it. Because I live out of the boundary, she would be forced to move to the HS by our house. Which we don't want because I think there's more substance issues there. So i'm back to no info
-some of her teacher responded to my email. I was just asking their late work policy and general classroom things like that. Where do they post resources. Several of them have very sparse canvas sites(i get it, teachers are busy)half are nearly blank. 2 teachers don't post grades on parentvue website. 1 responded to me. 1 replied to gma, and she forwarded it. I had to get a different AP involved to get a response. She also called guardian before giving me the info. I didn't think class policies are restricted info.
This was a long post. I'm just really frustrated because she is going to fail and I was involved too late. Feels like staff are more concerned with following over-rigid policy and not helping me to help our student.
TLDR: 15yo living with me. Not her guardian. Most staff won't share even general info and the district doesn't have a FERPA policy or waivers/ROI

2024.05.15 22:59 stock_r72 Ridiculous guide to a 521 as a d1 procrastinator (513 -> 522 on FLs in last month of studying)

Ridiculous guide to a 521 as a d1 procrastinator (513 -> 522 on FLs in last month of studying)
DISCLAIMER: I think there are already a lot of great "guide to 52X" scores on this subreddit. A lot of this is just written as context before my last month of studying, the studying I did was honestly super haphazard up until that point so I recommend looking at how other guides tell you to study for those earlier months. Feel free to skip to the last 5 weeks, but if you want to compare your progress before that last month to mine I've written out background. I would come to this guide when you need a reminder of the fact that you will make plans and your plans might backfire, but you can still end up doing well.
I've always been a crammer, have never been the type to be able to stick to a set amount of anki cards a day over a long time period (this sucks! I actively am working to change this attitude). I also didn't feel like I knew much from my classes (especially in orgo, genchem, and biochem) since again, I generally tend to cram, take the exam, and forget all of what I learned. Going into studying, my biggest worry was that I didn't have a lot of background knowledge that I remembered.

Background:

  • 2 months studying (5.5 weeks content review, 2.5 weeks uworld) summer 2023. Ended up taking sample unscored a month before my august test date, getting a 507, and then deciding to reschedule to March.
    • Biggest takeaways: spent too long getting bogged down on details of content review, avoided practice questions on I was bad at instead of tackling them head on, did not stay consistent with anki. Also barely studied psych at all
  • August to January: did not study, was in last sem of college
  • 1.5 months Mid January - end of feb (content re-do with anki, and uworld): I felt like I got a decent overview of content from the summer, so even if I forgot the details, it now felt like I was starting studying at the same place as everyone who had retained information from their undergrad classes.
    • Typical day looked like: 1 section uworld C/P or bio + review, ~70 cards of anki/day + more reviews, reading 20 pages of psych. Studied for 4 days / week, took an FL on 5th day, then had rest day or hospital shift on the other 2 days.
    • By the end of Feb, I had finished around 27% of uworld (I reset it after the summer), and done anki with reviews for bio. Had also clicked through MD anki for orgo genchem and physics but didn't do reviews for these since i used it as a refresher
Practice test scores from mid Jan through March: FL1 509, 510 (retook sample), FL2 513 (127 across all sections except 132 CARS somehow), Fl3 513 on March 5th. I seemed to be plateauing around the low 510s, so I decided to push my test date back one more month to the 4/13 date.
Took a few days break where i just passively clicked through some of pankow psych and watched mamma mia and random other shit

Last 5 weeks of studying:

At this point the cramming panic somehow hit, and I was set on the fact that it was time to lock the fuck in. From March 5th to April 9th (5 weeks) I went from a 513 -> 522 on my Fls. I remember scrolling through this reddit and reading about people saying it's only possible to increase scores by a few points in the last month, and was kind of doomspiraling because of these posts and comments. I think it's so important to realize that everyone is in a different situation, and you can't generalize a score increase that one person had to what you will have without evaluating your strengths/weaknesses with theirs -- which is why I'm going to try and give as many details as possible on why I think I was able to make this improvement.
  • Started using Uworld as a LEARNING TOOL instead of an assessment tool. After all the work so far I was doing ok on timing for the sections, so I used tutored and untimed mode on uworld. I reshaped my mindset to "i am so fucked bc im getting these wrong" to "there is a month left for this exam, I now know why I got this wrong and it's going to at least be in my short term memory for the exam". This was just an exercise in gaslighting myself into confidence, and it seemed to work -- the mindset change made me a lot more motivated, and things felt a lot less disheartening once I stopped caring about what my uworld averages looked like.
  • Week 1: Up until this point, I had still not covered the psych content in full since the science sections were "scarier" to me. Would average 127 on my psych sections on previous FLs. Took one week to go through psych Uworld in full, wrote all of my missed questions into an anki MQL deck. Clicked through 100 cards MD a day the week after that (while doing uworld physics) to finish the deck, did not do reviews (this was ridiculous tbh like do your reviews LMAOO). On March 19th, 2 weeks after my 513 on FL3, I scored a 517 on FL4 with 3 points of that increase coming from psych. I think this was mostly due to doing all of uworld psych + going hard on reviewing my uworld sections
  • Week 2 and half of week 3: Did uworld for sections that I was bad at -- I had spent about 1.5 weeks going through 75% of the uworld physics questions and uworld orgo questions, and then targeting areas I had weaknesses in for genchem on uworld. After this, I felt a lot more comfortable with the science sections given the background I had already had from doing anki
  • Halfway point: 2.5 weeks left until my exam, I started AAMC material. I had done the chem SB and half of the bio SB already, but had not touched the rest of it. In retrospect, give yourself 3 weeks for AAMC material at LEAST, or be prepared to be ok with not finishing all of the material like I did. Bio/chem qpacks and AAMC discretes had not seemed super difficult to me, so I skipped the second bio qpack and half of chem. I finished all of the material except bio qpack 2, half of chem qpack, AAMC discretes, half of CARS qpack1, and CARS qpack2. THAT SAID, the rest of the shit was so hard. The only thing that kept me going was my "this is a learning tool not an assessment tool" mindset and thinking that I was learning things from making these mistakes.
  • CONTENT BLITZES (!!!!!): At this point, I knew my strengths and weaknesses, so I actively tackled my weaknesses by going back and clicking through anki chapters/looking at videos for the specific topics I know I was bad at. I made one page "guides" on them, and from the last month of studying ended up having 40 looseleaf pages of "guides" that I looked through 3x -- twice in the 2 weeks leading up to the exam, and once the morning of my exam (oof). This was INCREDIBLY helpful since it made me feel like there was no topic that I would be scared to get on the exam, since I now felt like I had at least a baseline understanding of most things.
  • random game changer: found this MCAT AI tool (based on chatGPT). Used it to upload screenshots of practice qs and get the AI explanation
  • Took FL5 on April 9th, and scored a 522. I was so fucking happy im ngl
  • Ended up finishing about 43% of uworld with a 73% average, but again I was using it as a learning tool
  • LAST 2 DAYS: funny funny funny story is that I never properly reviewed any of my FLs (had reviewed C/P for half of them). this is because reviewing sections i made a lot of mistakes on is something I loathe since it takes me fucking forever and its so much work to figure out why I got things wrong, condense that into a few sentences, and then put that in an anki card. So during my last 2 days I finished reviewing the C/P B/B sections (went faster since now i knew a lot more), but still didn't review any of my P/S or CARS sections. this was stupid imma be honest
Final score: 521 (131/129/130/131) on 4/13 exam
  • was part of the people that had the glitch, somehow I just made the assumption that the breached qs were experimental qs and it thankfully didn't interrupt me that much other than the 5min it took for the proctor to look at it. I later absolutely freaked out about the implications of the glitch post exam
Final Musings:
  • VERY MUCH do regret skipping the CARS qpacks, but I was feeling a bit more confident about CARS after reshaping my mindset to "this is such an interesting passage and I am actually so FUCKING excited to read about this because its literally hidden knowledge that was declassified or like recovered from the library of alexandria" and seeing better performance after that. Once again, literally just an exercise in gaslighting yourself. I also knew that if I were to finish CARS I would be sacrificing part of studying for my other sections. Still quite happy with my score though so like womp womp i guess it didn't matter LMFAO
  • LAST DAY: "dont study on your last day" I was a fucking adrenaline junkie and was absolutely determined to cover the things that I needed to cover in order to feel confident going into the exam (did not do any practice, thats draining). So I studied longer than I have ever studied in 1 day, clicked through all of bio anki / anki on sections i was bad at from 7am to 10pm straight with only a one hour break from 3-4pm where i walked around my house in a haze. I dont recommend this per se, but I guess I am an example of it not entirely fucking me over (but n=1).
  • Biochem last 4 chapters I mostly learned by writing out the pathways in a giant map
  • Morning of: once again I was in my insane era and studied from 6:15-6:45am, then again in the car from 7am - 7:39am. I took 5 minutes to clear my mind and touch grass outside my test center until 7:45, then walked in and had 7:45-8:10 to clear my mind and not think about anything before I started my exam
  • please review your fls before the last 2 days dawgz
  • MINDSET IS HUGE. part of why I think I had such a score increase was 1) actually doing psych 2) CONVINCING myself that I was improving and on the right track. Control f everywhere i said "gaslight" and ingrain that shit in your mind because it is actually so powerful
  • for the last month of studying i holed up in my apartment and did not see any of my friends (maybe left my apartment 3 times ever?). it was horrible but i was like this is a sacrifice i need to make, also fits the crammer description very well. my only breaks were blasting 2010s hits and country music and dancing to it in my room and also making an ominous classical music playlist (top song of march was mozart's lacrimosa lmaoo)
*******OPENING MY SCORE: I was so fucking scared the day before and even more so the morning of. That said, I knew I had tried as much as I could given the general exhaustion and the wacky way I studied. Honestly I thought I would feel happier after opening my score, instead I felt relief but there was no surge of happiness. Still kind of feel empty, I think it hasn't hit yet. Am in theory very happy though, I remember imagining how happy I would be if i got a score like this. I think this also just goes to say there is life outside of this exam and getting a solid score isn't always like some magical thing but also it is DEFINITELY a relief
In retrospect you should honestly just use this to learn from my mistakes because there were MANY, but I think there is also some helpful advice in here. Am really just hoping this helps at least one person even if its pure yap to 99% of other people. tbh im not proofreading this like im not reading all that again LMFAO but If anyone reads this far and has questions on specific FL section breakdowns or anything else I'm happy to answer! good luck my bitches I believe in you fr

2024.05.15 22:53 lswolfy Community Update - May15th, 2024

Community Update - May15th, 2024
Hey there! Clare here, your snack connoisseur.
Last weekend, we had unseasonably great weather in the UK, so my little family and I went for a bike ride on a disused railway line called the Cuckoo Trail. It's a lovely route because it is traffic-free and reasonably flat, which is essential if I'm to keep my whinge quotient down (my daughters are much hardier than I am). Halfway along the route, we saw a sign for the Cuckoo Cafe, promising snacks galore, which, as you know, is right up my street and would make the ride worthwhile as I could do some research for this very community update. Upon entering the establishment, my youngest immediately clocked the 'Jammie Dodger Blondie'.
For the uninitiated, a Jammie Dodger is essentially two discs of buttery shortbread embracing a gooey center of raspberry "jam" (or, let's be honest, a jam-like chemical concoction that glues the biscuits together). Originating in Wales in the swinging '60s, these biscuits were the brainchild of Burton Biscuits, and though there have been a few spin-offs like the Choccie and Toffee Dodgers, they have yet to quite capture the original's magic. They were named after the Beano comic book character "Roger the Dodger," who was renowned for his ability to dodge responsibility, particularly concerning his homework (I am also not a fan of the 'h' word).
So here we are, in picturesque England, about to sample a snack that uses jammie dodgers as the main ingredient. "What could possibly go wrong?" I hear you ask.
https://preview.redd.it/dpr35krzkn0d1.png?width=560&format=png&auto=webp&s=18646f9052c0c82bbe8a7c12e36163379dc941bb
A lot, as this photo would attest to. The yummy pineapple cooler was quickly dispatched, but the jammie dodger treat was found to be inedible, which is quite a feat between my youngest and me. Something with such promise had gone horribly wrong. The jammie dodger is wonderful because it has the perfect ratio of biscuit to jam, which we already knew (we are very experienced with the jammie dodger in our household). Therefore, adding anything other than more jammie dodgers to a jammie dodger was bound to upset this balance. We only had ourselves to blame.
My eldest went with the delectable fruit scone — there is no photo of that because every crumb was consumed. The moral of this story is don't mess with a British classic, and you can't go wrong with a scone, so long as you follow the rules (rhymes with 'stone', cream before jam, served with afternoon tea).
Moving on...

Smooth Start

Our Spring/Summer Smooth Start Cohort is starting next week, which is very exciting. We have many guest speakers lined up and great leads to facilitate each group.
When starting your Launch School journey, Smooth Start is a lovely way to meet peers, explore study techniques, and talk to graduate software engineers. Don't worry if you missed out this time; it's entirely optional. However, check out the Smooth Start page to join the waitlist for the next round if you fancy joining in (with this many people having this much fun—what's not to like?).

Podcasts

Speaking of Smooth Start, Brandi has been busy since the last update, releasing not one but two new podcasts. The first is with Karis on all things Smooth Start. You can catch it here.
In the second of this month's episodes, Brandi interviewed Patrick about his experience working through the core curriculum, including the benefits of Launch School's flexibility (it's all about balance). Watch it here.
And, of course, you can always search for 'Launch School' on your favorite podcast app to find these and all previous episodes.

Meet-ups

There have been some great in-person meet-ups this month, including Minnesota, Utah, Mitch's study group, and a mini post-Capstone gathering (which was worth two images because the photos are so cute):
https://preview.redd.it/9hbj2t35ln0d1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=a2435744d7a0d12442f27b324cafb22b75b0d6d4
I don't know of any planned meet-ups but check out the (numerous) Slack channels to see if there's one for a region near you. If there isn't, feel free to try and start one up!
Pete also had a great suggestion: prefix location-specific channels with 'regional-' to make them easier to find. So, if you have created a channel for a local region, you now know how to be found!

Women's Group

Our regular Launch School Women's Group Virtual meeting is on Sunday, June 2nd, at 2 pm EDT. This will include a focused discussion on "Parenting at Launch School." We all have commitments to consider, and exploring different strategies we use to find a balance that works for us will be great.
Check out this forum post for more information, including how to sign up.

Student articles

The tradition of students writing great articles about their programming and studying exploits continues. This time, we have some prodigious authors.
Joshua has written two articles. In the first (Launch School - My Experience), Joshua explores transitioning to software engineering and what to expect from Launch School. The second (I Failed My First Assessment At Launch School) looks at the positives of NY and the support to be gained from our community.
Sara has written four articles. First, Study techniques and preparation against assessment shenanigans, and then a 3-parter on Nested collection navigation, looping, method chaining, and shallow copies!
Lastly, something close to my heart as I still haven't taken the plunge on the 229 assessment, JD's What's this: Something in the air of JavaScript's Execution Context. If you're struggling with this, this is the article for you.

On the Grapevine

Our Slack channels are the key to getting involved in Launch School's community. There are many channels for all interests, so you can balance work and play.
Nathan has created a new #photography group for (non-pet) photos! Don't let this distract you from Launch Schools's best channel though: #gratuitous_pet_photos.
Following on from Brandi's idea in the last CU about absurd things we do to prepare for assessments, check out this thread for ideas. Snacks featured a lot, for which I'm happy to take credit - snacks are a food group all of their own and are essential for optimizing brain power.
Naya found an application for binary search in the physical world - Launch School is here for all your interior decorating needs.
Let's finish with some spectacular photos of the Northern lights. The right white balance is essential to a great photo, and our Launch School photographers have achieved this with aplomb.

2024.05.15 22:49 AwakeningStar1968 Contacting creditors.. to negotiate payments

I have around 30,000 dollars of credit card debt.
One of my debts is being payed down but they are raising the amount I owe next month... which I am worried about. They issued a lawsuit against me....
So I have other creditors mostly credit cards and now I have another notice from the same company above (MIDLAND) that sent me a pre- legal notification. ..
this debt has been sold at least twice before but I haven't been able to act on much of any of my debt due to crippling health injuries. (Long term Covid / brain fog, hospitalization etc).
I am feeling a bit better to deal with this matter but I know I am deep in the hole.
SO for this one creditor... should I bother sending them a letter asking for more information. I know where the debt originally came from but I am concerned about how many times it has bounced around . Is it worth it sending them a letter requiring them to give me this information?
The other issue... I am honestly unable to pay off the entire amounts. I can maybe pay $10 dollars a month on this particular card .. (which is is around 3,000 dollars).
I had a tough time negotiating with Midland once the lawsuit on the other card occured. .. but I cannot reasonably afford another $100 dollars a month on this debt.. as of now.
I have lost a few years since the pandemic and have struggled to get back on my feet. Things have just not lined up the way I had hoped they would and now with inflation I can barely afford food.
Recommendations? Tips.
Here is the sample letter I pulled..
"To whom it may concern.
I am responding to your contact about a debt you are trying to collect. You contacted me by
Mail on May 1st, 2024 and identified the debt as from \*****S Bank. Please supply the information below so that I can be fully informed:*

~Details about your authority to collect this debt.~

• I would like more information about your firm before I discuss the debt with you. Does your firm have a debt collection license from my state? If not, say why not. If so, provide the date of the license, the name on the license, the license number, and the name, address and telephone number of the state agency issuing the license.

• If you are contacting me from a place outside my state, does your firm have a debt collection license from that place? If so, provide the date of the license, the name on the license, the license number, and the name, address and telephone number of the state agency issuing the license.

I have asked for this information because I have some questions. I need to hear from you to make an informed decision about your claim that I owe this money. I am open to communicating with you for this purpose. In order to make sure that I am not put at any disadvantage, in the meantime please treat this debt as being in dispute and under discussion between us.

In addition to providing the information requested above, please let me know whether you are prepared to accept less than the balance you are claiming is owed. If so, please tell me in writing your offer with the amount you will accept to fully resolve the account.

Thank you for your cooperation. Sincerely,

2024.05.15 22:32 ihave10toes_AMA Lost mom to mystery illness, treated as stomach virus

My mom passed away in April and I’m really trying to make sense of it. I’d never seen her sick a day in my life, unless you count her sensitive stomach and treatment for high blood pressure. Then she was gone as soon as we got her a proper diagnosis. It sounds like Mesenteric Ischemia is very easy to miss, and I was frantically looking for posts about it while she was in the hospital. So I thought I’d share this.
Mom started getting sick around Thanksgiving. By mid-December it was bad enough that she could not travel for Christmas. She thought she had a stomach virus and said she didn’t have the energy to pack or drive and didn’t trust her stomach for a 3 hour drive. She started eating smaller meals to manage the virus.
Mid-February was her first ER visit. She was admitted & stayed 2 nights. Diagnosis was severe dehydration. Her white blood cell count was high, liver and kidneys ‘wacky’. She was nauseated, lethargic, foggy brain. CT examined her head, “every organ”. They did an ultrasound and told her it was not an organ. She was eating full meals by the time she was released.
One of the doctors at the ER asked her why she was there. He really treated her as though she was overreacting, and likely made her hesitate to seek care any more urgently, despite her decline.
After release she was told her blood sugar levels were high. She was diagnosed with hypokalemia (low potassium). She started working on a pre-diabetic diet but remained nauseated.
Mid-March a CT scan showed hiatal hernia and infection of some kind. She was dehydrated again. She hired someone for at-home IV treatments. She was drinking bone broth and drinks with electrolytes. A stool sample showed good results & her dr scheduled more blood tests. She had lost 25-30 lbs by this point.
Her dr scheduled an upper GI and colonoscopy for May 1st to look for ulcers, hernia. Blood test confirmed elevated white blood cells are caused by an infection and they’ve ruled out cancer.
April 1 – Dr told her she had stomach ulcers. After colonoscopy and endoscopy the dr is worried about blood flow to stomach. After a CT scan, she is referred to a vascular surgeon. They will do an ultrasound and consultation.
April 9 – Biopsies from colonoscopy are clear. Dr diagnosed clogged arteries around the stomach. Mesenteric Ischemia diagnosis. Scheduled an appointment to insert stents or look to bypass surgery.
April 10 – Admitted to ER for failure to thrive. TPN set up for nutrition. Plan is to build up her strength for the surgery.
April 13 – Dr ordered Xray to check for a possible bowel obstruction, lactic acid test to look for dead tissue / sepsis, hemoglobin test to check for internal bleeding. Mom has upper GI pain & cannot control her bowels. Very weak, unable to get up & down from bed on her own.
April 14 – Bowel obstruction found, ordering another x ray before deciding how to proceed. Backing off meals but keeping TPN, in order to let her stomach rest. (she was barely touching her food at all). Since bloodwork looks ok they think it could resolve itself.
April 15 – Dr says vitals are good, sugar levels are good. Surgery delayed, not because she is too weak but because she seems better. (I think this info was relayed to me wrong). They assured us waiting will not cause permanent damage to organs or tissue. Blood flow “looks better” and they “aren’t even sure it’s a blockage” now. Mom was able to do PT and OT but was extremely weak after. Surgeon impressed with cognition.
April 16 – Mom was in a lot of pain, and they thought it was from the PT & OT exertion. CT scan came back once again confirming the bowel obstruction. Intestines are dilated. Keeping TPN, antibiotics added to IV. Ordered another CT scan & fasting (other than TPN). Blood pressure was up & down all day. Feet swelling for the first time. Abdomen expanding to a degree my cousin noticed from her bedside.
April 17 –In the middle of the night she became unresponsive. Dr found her stomach full of blood. Her esophagus tore where it meets her stomach due to weak tissue. Her stomach was full of blood. She’s too weak for stents or bypass and will not regain strength without that. Dr thinks at this point her body is infected from bowel perforations & cannot heal

I have every skill to finish this but it just takes too much alone, hours on pages alone (currently have like 13) I want a friendly and casual environment, making this just a fun thing to do
My discord user is: sash8993 Contact me here or there for questions ect
A sample of 2 pages and an ad are attached, the series isn’t published, inspired by real people, my art and writing of course will improve and change over time so it might look like that now but one day it’ll be a masterpiece

2024.05.15 21:42 shoppingcartxd Razaketh deck (but he's the commander)

I've been testing Razaketh as the commander and have been having a lot of fun with the deck. It mainly just tries to get Razaketh with at least 1 creature to sacrifice, it can win with 1 tutor and 1 black or 2 colorless mana if Razaketh doesn't get removed. I also added hoarding broodlord as a 1 card win con to use if he gets removed (I wrote a primer with all these lines). It's mono black, so pretty fragile, but it can definitely put out win attempts pretty consistently. It can get really blown out by Razaketh getting countered, but that seems unavoidable with an 8 mana commander. I would love your suggestions.

2024.05.15 21:36 theplagueisback Can't get Eddy probe from BigTreeTech to work on my printer

Can't get Eddy probe from BigTreeTech to work on my printer
I had my printer working perfectly fine with a BL-Touch. I have a raspberry pi 4 connected to an octopus pro 1.0 board.
  1. Replaced BL-Touch with the Eddy Probe.
  2. Flashed the Eddy with the correct firmware as per the documentation guidelines.
  3. Added the Eddy cfg as per the instructions provided.
  4. Set the correct Eddy Probe serial path as it was detected by my raspberry board.
  5. Started the guide to calibrate it, first step was ok.
  6. Got stuck where it tells me to do the paper test.
    1. When I home the printer the Z axis won't move.
    2. It reports I have exceeded the position_max value of the Z axis.
    3. My Z axis position_max is 150mm, the probe is currently at 50mm from the bed.
    4. The bed is made of metal which should be compatible with the probe.
    5. Klipper keeps complaining I am over the 150 (position_max) of the Z axis.
What could I be missing here that the Z axis does not move and klipper thinks I'm always over the position_max value on the Z axis?
Btw I tried some arbitrary values in the Z axis position_max and whatever I enter in there klipper will later tell me I exceeded, if I enter 150 klipper says I'm at 150.505, if I enter 200 it says I'm at 200.505, and so on.
my configs: printer.cfg: https://pastebin.com/s6Y8Pu1b eddy.cfg: https://pastebin.com/9wgGRgnW
probe (I have the USB version): https://biqu.equipment/products/bigtreetech-eddy docs: https://github.com/bigtreetech/Eddy sample config: https://github.com/bigtreetech/Eddy/blob/mastesample-bigtreetech-eddy.cfg documentation: https://github.com/bigtreetech/Eddy/blob/masteBIGTRRETECH%20Eddy%20V1.0%20User%20Manual.pdf
When I center my nozzle this is what it reports, if I move the bed manually very close to the Eddy it will still report OPEN.
This is the step by step from the probe documentation.
How the printer looks like with the probe installed when I'm doing the tests.
When I try to calibrate the probe I get this popup, none of the buttons will work as they all report \"MOVE OUT OF RANGE\", and the Z axis will always report being a little over the maximum I set in the cfg.

2024.05.15 21:34 JimmiDead Mystery disease RETURNS to Fukien tea tree

Mystery disease RETURNS to Fukien tea tree
Hello all,
So this is my second time posting to this subreddit about the same plant (Fukien tea tree) with the same disease (I’m almost positive). Last time I was advised it was thrips, which seemed likely given the symptoms and I thought I saw them on an adjacent plant too. However, since my last post, I also got a stereo microscope for at-home use; now that the symptoms have returned and I can use the microscope to get a better look, I'm not all that sure it's thrips. I know I could be wrong, but hear me out…
Here's the TL;DR -- black spots have appeared twice now on the underside of the leaves of my Fukien tea tree. I water the plant when the topsoil begins to dry (it's in a rather organic bonsai soil; I will be repotting it into a more inorganic mix soon). The tree gets indirect natural light and 14 hours under a Sansi grow light. I've used Bonide systemic insecticide granules and Bonide copper fungicide spray. It doesn't appear to be spreading at the moment, but this is the second time the disease emerged. No insects found yet.
For a more in-depth analysis: Symptoms are black bumpy spots that almost look like warts when they are close together. The white powdery substance at the top of the leaf is omnipresent, even after cleaning the leaves with DI water (hold off on powdery mildew diagnosis, I’ll get to that in a sec). Idk if the white substance is related to the black spots that emerged, but it was present when I purchased the plant earlier this year and when the plant is/was otherwise “healthy." I think the white substance is just dried minerals from hard water (I live in California), and I only mention it because I know it looks like powdery mildew from a glace -- BUT it is only present on old leaves, no new leaves that have sprouted since purchasing the plant have the white substance. Also, the tiny white speckles visible on the top side of the leaves are not part of this white substance I'm talking about; they are a normal part of the Fukien leaf phenotype. That being said, the black spots have their highest concentration on the older leaves; some spots (like 1 or 2 to the naked eye) on newer leaves with no white substance, but the older leaves (that are more likely to have the white substance) have it way worse.
As mentioned, this is the second time symptoms have emerged. The first time around, when I thought the infection was thrips, I followed most of the advice given by u/Xenofontis when I initially posted ~3 weeks ago. After isolating the plant and removing any foliage with signs of infection, I treated it with this Bonide systemic insecticide granules (as well as every other plant in my collection as a precaution). I removed a good deal of soil, but I was planning on doing a complete soil swap on either the last week of this month/first week of June; I didn't have any bonsai soil at the time, and I wanted to wait until it was closer to the "proper" time to repot tropical bonsai. That being said, I am not entirely convinced this is thrips. I know that with the thrips life cycle, the timing may align for the return of symptoms. However, I never saw the insect on the Fukien tea or surrounding plants (only the evidence for the insects, and always with the naked eye). Furthermore, some idiosyncrasies emerged this time around using the microscope:
Aside from not seeing any insects or eggs with either 20x or 40x magnification, under the microscope the black dots do not appear superficial. Especially under 40x, the black dots have the appearance of something emerging from under the lower epidermis. Furthermore, the context in which the symptoms emerged makes me think it is fungi or bacterial-related. Both times the symptoms emerged, it was after humidity increased. The first time was the day after watering when I poured water from the top and the foliage got wet. The second time was (interestingly) after spraying the leaves with copper fungicide. Another one of my plants looked as if it may have had black spot post-repotting, so after isolating, I preemptively sprayed the rest of my plants in the same room with Captain Jack’s copper fungicide. All the other plants are fine, nothing to report there, save for the Fukien bonsai. The VERY NEXT DAY, symptoms came back with a vengeance. And I mean, there were nearly 0 leaves with (visible) spots on them, and then nearly 20% of the leaves had spots that were clearly visible to the naked eye. See some of the last couple images for the more heavily-infected leaves; within 24 hours, they looked like a topographical map.
With that in mind, I thought that maybe it was powdery mildew. I thought that maybe I didn’t spray the leaves thoroughly, and the water from the fungicide solution evaporated, leading to increased humidity and (perhaps) endophytic powdery mildew growing from somata. Since I now had the microscope, I wanted to confirm before using intense systemic (the imidacloprid from the Bonide granules is likely still somewhat present in the plant; I didn't want to stress the plant too much by adding more chemicals, especially since it just started flowering lol). Using my new stereo microscope, I took some of the more heavily infected leaves and well... I'm stumped.
From the images I've attached, I think it's clear that whatever this pathogen is, it is endophytic or semi-endophytic. Using the backlight was wild -- it may not be clear from the images, but some samples had yellow translucent (and I assume endophytic) portions surrounding the black spots that were not visible from top-down lighting. Some samples had these yellow spots where no black spots were visible yet. I tried to pop on one of the larger black spots to see if I could get a look inside (see last photo). I can't tell if they are cleistothecia or possibly pest eggs from this level of magnification, but hopefully someone here will find it useful. I've been saving up for a nice trinocular compound microscope, so if I can get that in the next couple of paychecks, I'll definitely post an update lol.
With all that in mind, I am stumped. I thought Google Images + a basic stereo microscope would help solve this riddle, but it left me with more questions. If anyone can use this data to help me ID and (hopefully) treat this infection, please let me know! Even if it's just speculation, I would greatly appreciate it. I am a clinical researcher, but my knowledge of plant pathology is a bit lacking. Even seeing the thought process for what this might be would be extremely beneficial! At the moment, I am planning on using a combo of imidacloprid, propiconazole, and neem oil to just nuke whatever this is out of existence, but I would love to be able to narrow down the treatments to just what is necessary.
Thank you!
Here are some pics of the whole tree for reference
Below are some pics of the plant with top and bottom-lighting with naked eye, 20x magnification, and 40x magnification respectively. For more pictures under the microscope, including the one where I "popped" one of the black dots, click here.
