2024.06.09 21:51 Own_Account7336 Adopting values

My parents are from countries A and B, and settled in C where I was born. I was sent to international school as parents expected to move back to B before I was 10, however that never happened. Illness and poverty defined my childhood, as well as bullying as no poor kids went to international school. I continued to national HS/College and university and managed to define a career but no real social life. There was severe neglect in my childhood home and much anger, as well as alcohol, which has formed my adulthood in ways I thought I’d overcome with age. I believe child protective services would have interfered if they had functioned at the international school, as they did in public schools.
Mum carries a conservative religious view, dad died several years ago, whereafter mum moved back to B. I remained in C and live a successful professional life but feel I’ve lost out on real life, having no kids but able to mostly do what I want - a luxury. My mum has never accepted my values as a citizen of C, which has a wholly different value system to B. The way I see it, I had no choice but to adapt and accept the values of C or else I would not be able to succeed in my life, or risk losing out on social and professional opportunities. These were tough choices as a young adult but I stand by them 20 years later. Country B offers me no opportunities while I often visit country A on business. I have little family contact there due to dad’s life choice as a very young man, turning his back and going to sea as a 15-year old.
My situation now is that mum pseudo-accepts my life choices, but sometimes lets it shine through that she does not accept my choices or values after all. “I did not raise you like this” is a common theme but they did not raise me - I had to raise myself after becoming a young adult. She repeatedly mentions the lack of grandchildren, disagreeing with choosing a partner who has her own, even though we may have a common child later. The situation is extremely sore but I feel that I cannot apologise for necessary life choices.
Any attempt to reason about these subjects has through the years proven futile. It always ends up in a shouting contest where my opinion does not matter, she holds the truth and I should be ashamed. When she starts screaming I am immediately brought back to childhood where mum and dad went on like this regularly, scaring me and depriving me of normal things such as having friends come over.
It appears to me that she is polishing history, remembering things in a more positive shine. She expects me to move to B and take care of the family property and herself, something I have absolutely no interest of. It was their choice to spend every free cent on the property in B, leading to collective misery in C and mangling my childhood in the process. Pulling from the values of C I’m happy to pay for services to care for mum when the time comes, which is the costume in this country except that the government pays when people stay here. She has a good material life on a great property with decent pension from her working life in C, a new husband and friends. C is thousands of kilometres away.
Am I complaining? Yes, for the purpose of stating my situation but no, I accept that life is what it is. I am happy to have a good job and nice stepkids. I hope my story is of interest to someone, perhaps someone can relate?
Thanks for your attention and time.

2024.06.09 21:39 Izanaginookami10 Just finished chapter 8

Just finished the highly acclaimed I suppose, to the point I looked extremely forward to it, chapter 8. Which from what I've heard, was also the last chapter that was available when the game was just released.
Well. HOLY SHIT. HOLYL FUCKING SHIT.
Starting with Lathel cursing, killing his past self in his nightmare. Ahh. AAaaAAA. Why. Why do I feel so ecstatic about it. Why. I don't understand. I think. I think it's related to something like... self-sacrifice...? No, no, this is self- harm. There's also madness, insanity in it.
Yes. I really like this new Lathel.. no. That is wrong. It's not like I like him, or rather, I actually do like him with a bit more of insanity, but looking at him like this makes me also very sad. I think the version of him that I liked the most was during chapter 6 and 7. Old but very angry Lathel.
The new Lathel... which I forgot to ask and check the community name of by the way, certainly still hits my checkboxes for insane and mad characters, as well as the 'growth' of Lathel, but mainly fills me with some... permeating sorrow.
.
That being said, I finally meet Lia, someone I know nothing about except being a the fire Queen DPS I believe.
So, I was most pleasantly surprised by directly meeting her. Liatris being a tad insane is just chef kiss. I like her a lot. I'm not quite certain on the reason she is yandere for Gray, but I definitely dig it.
.
Ah. Wait a moment. It was some weeks ago and I've already forgotten given my horrible memory that borders dementia realms (I'm actually just very busy and stressed to the point I forget what I was doing when I pass through a door...), but... wasn't there a Gray flashback with him being the youngest son of a noble family that was executing some people and he saved a girl?
Then, was that girl Liatris perhaps?
Or am I actually totally wrong and I'm remembering incorrectly? Maybe it wasn't even about Gray. I don't know. But until I get contrasting information, that will be my head canon.
Either way. I definitely like a lot Yandere Liatris. Definitely a very good additional reason to get her as soon as possible other than the Fire Queen DPS, though I heard Eris is also a great addition for that role.
.
But what I like the most, is of course the different flavor of madness the duo of her and Lathel give off compared to say, Teresse and Lathel.
If the latter was a sorrowful madness, Lia and Lathel feels closer to chaotic madness.
It's another type of insanity, but one I also like a lot. Actually, I think I just like insanity in general, so this is cheating as I would love any type of insanity. This highlight once more how much I love, I truly love Lathel's development and... process of becoming a broken person.
I love how the 'MC' is one of the people becoming insane.
And what to say of the Justia and Lathel relationship? The way they are... I don't know, connected perhaps? Is so... poetic. Romantic even. By that I don't mean romance as 'love', but in the, uh, sentimental sense. I'm a 'romanticist' if it wasn't clear enough, as in, I put extreme importance on deep emotions, feelings and inner thoughts rather than 'external' factors.
That is why I love so much this story, as, even though it's a classic tale of 'fighting evil to save the world', it's also very centered on the bonds, relationships and inner growth of the characters as well as their emotions and feelings.
Of course, the characters most fleshed out as of now are definitely Lathel and Justia, though as of late, it's way more prominent Lathel's change.
.
The way both roles got reversed, with Justia becoming a far more understanding and flexible as well as hopeful knight from the rigid, black and white evil slayer she was origially; and Lathel on the other hand, becoming more and more ruthless, almost reaching madness levels, nay, legit becoming insane, when he was a kind, naive, herbalist.... is such a romantic contrast that it almost seems poetry in my eyes.
I love the most how everyone realize and talk about his changes, Justia especially, but also Shera and to minor a degree Gray. I really love it. How everyone acknowledge, regardless of their feeling, his change, and how the narration highlight it so much.
Of course, although I admit I greatly love how he changed, I can feel this 'relaxed' because I'm aware this is by no means his 'endpoint'. This isn't his final 'version'. No. He will experience, develop much more. I'm certain of it.
I mean, I'm spoiled meta-wise due to the existence of so many more Lathel related costumes, especially 'Homunculus Lathel' and the coincidentally future story pack 'Homunculus'.
So yeah. My fondness for him will not stop growing here. I am strangely really fond of him. Strangely because it has been just a... month. Ah.
I've been in this world for a month already. I see.
.
I saw him as a naive herbalist.
.
I saw him witnessing Misha's death.
.
I grieved for and with him, to the point of mourning myself for Misha and still feeling sad over her death.
.
I saw his meeting with Shera, Gray and the whole party becoming closer.
.
I saw him becoming more and more unforgiving towards Cocytus acts of cruelty.
.
I saw him becoming berserk and reaching madness levels in the Mage Tower and alongside Teresse.
.
Now. I see him as a changed, disillusioned avenger or perhaps, empty man whose sole purpose is to crush evil.
.
And I long, to see how much more he will grow, hoping for him to find another purpose other than simply slaying evil.
.
It's my personal... fantasy, delusion even, that I hope Justia might bring him back on the correct? No, who am I to say what's correct and what is not, I hope she can bring him back to a less self-destructive way. Yes. That's more like it.
.
.
...
.
.......
.
.....................so.
.
.
So. You can imagine the shock.
I would have never imagined that Lathel would... die. I didn't particularly think of what could happen, but death was certainly not an hypothesis I even contemplated for some reason.
Thus, my first reaction was... a lack of reaction. No, disbelief perhaps? Denial? That's a little to strong. Disbelief is more correct to describe it I believe. Yes. I couldn't believe what had just happened.
And I'm, after some hours, still not quite 'connected' to what just happened.
.
No. I lied. After few hours. Right now. Especially while glancing at the cutscenes character arts. With Lathel laying down, on the brink of death and Justia crying promising him to cook his favourite dishes when they return is making my nose and eyes feel that familiar feeling when you're about to cry.
It's hitting me hard allright. Yes. It's hitting me hard now. Very hard. Fudge.
This is honestly unexpected. I'm seriously feeling it all now. I'm tearing up.
Damn. The feelings of recalling Misha are also resurfacing. Damn it.
I teared up.
I guess taking a little time to order my thoughts, also unlocked the emotional aspect I had for this specific happening.
....
.......shit. I'm starting to feel my eyes burning up a little again.
.
It's sad. It's just sad.
Lathel's experience is just sad. The more I think about it, the more tragic it feels and the more sorrowful I feel.
.
I actually wanted to say I was a little disappointed by the chapter. Not because it was bad, but simply because my expectations were extremely high and although I said I didn't particularly imagine what scenario could possibly happen, as a veteran I would say in stories, I subconsciously certainly thought of few paths. But I believe what I thought would happen was closer to some, true and uninterrupted this time, emotional climax.
Like, Lathel self sacrificing and Justia barely bringing him back and crying while screaming at him that he mustn't consume himself to 'annihilate' evil. Would Misha want that for him? Would the people that hold and held him dear wish for such ending for him? I would have loved if some of her own personal feeling was spilled at that moment as well, and by that I don't specifically mean romantic feelings, but definitely some kind of affection or closeness.
However. All of that was merely a delusion on my part.
For Lathel died.
Betraying my delusion. I was about to say I was slightly disappointed due to the above fact, as well as due to the automatic preview we have for the next chapter, showing me fast forwarding a year later and Lathel or his clone, homunculus or his legacy, showing up.
.
But now that I'm currently hit like a truck by my own emotions and feelings of sorrow over his death the more I think about it.
I think it was just a delayed reaction.
I actually still think I love the most Chapter 7, as Teresse sorrowful rage alongside Lathel's was most... beautiful.
But this chapter is certainly very special as well.
.
Furthermore, now I look very, nay, extremely forward to the party, especially Justia's reaction at their reunion. Though I am uncertain on Lathel's own reaction. I imagine him having his memory wiped though, so it will be a amnesiac "Lathel" meeting Justia. That on itself is already making me long for such reunion so much I must contain myself from immediately progressing.
Yes, because I think this is a good point to take a break at. As I fear I'll consume the story too fast, risking to suffer from that nightmarish feeling of total emptyness after reading and catching up or finishing a great story. Something... I'm very familiar with given I'm a reader first and foremost. That pain, after so many years, reaching decades even, still affects me so much it's something I believe I cannot get used to.
.
The feeling of suddenly missing something that accompanied you for a while, for the harsh every day. Suddenly disappearing and leaving a metaphorical hole within you. That emptyness.. is seriously painful.
.....I literally just realized. Have I actually been grieving for the 'loss' of stories all this time? Damn... I suppose. They are indeed my most precious thing indeed. No wonder. Though I would like to think I'm not alone in this. I believe everyone, after finishing such great story, be it due to it being completed or because it's the last available chapter, would feel empty inside to some degree. Maybe I'm overly affected. Maybe not. But it doesn't matter.
To alleviate that inevitable, unbearable pain, I'll try to resist the temptation of starting, and finishing, the next chapter immediately.
.
.
.
Then again. Haven't I been saying this for like the last 3 chapters...? I hope to continue loving a lot and for long this story, as it is very precious to me for now. Stories like this are my raison d'etre.
To 'forcefully' take a break, I have half-idea to start Brave Nine to further immerse myself in this world and lore regardless of the gameply. Unless it's completely garbage, I think I can enjoy it, for I am a reader. Hence gameplay is secondary.

2024.06.09 21:23 MarionberryDue9358 Don't want to invite friends to my home

Been living in an apartment for most of my adult life & all my friends & family have been able to move on to buy houses where they put together like parties, practices for activities like music, dance, costumes, workshops, etc. it's not that we're not looking for houses but the housing market is just awful with what seems like no end in sight. I feel like my problem is that I don't have space like that to invite people over. My apartment is around 900 sq ft with 2 bedrooms & 1 bathroom. It's upstairs & there's barely enough parking for people who live there, let alone additional folks visiting. Plus majority of my family is out of town. We only have our inlaws come over for a day because we're in a bigger city with more to do for birthdays & Father's/Mother's Day, but we're definitely at max capacity with 6 people when they do see us. So, we pretty much never invite people over to our home, we usually suggest that we meet them somewhere else like a restaurant or activity, but I can't just invite myself over to other people's houses. I don't know, man, I want to have a home that people want to go to & are excited about, but if I'm hardly enjoying my own space, then why would I make other people join in on that?

2024.06.09 20:46 Ok_Bumblebee_5042 Borrowed Time not to be paid back

Borrowed Time not to be paid back
Borrowed Time not to be Paid Back.
It is sometime in the heat of Texas of 1998 and I find myself being asked by my mom if I own any guns or specifically a shotgun. She also asked if I knew how to make home made pipe bombs. Of course, I said No.
Why was I being asked this- well here is what lead up to that moment in my confused hormone infused age of 16. Not fitting in with the crowd and not getting the attention by the opposite gender… dampened by daily outlook on what was my short stint of the HS Years. One could say I was the Charlie Brown cartoon that had all the dirt around him... I was grungy to say the least. I played the part well which in turn became who I was… which I regretted many years ago into y adulthood. (Bill Collectors just called me at 1240pm cst) I so hoped for that somehow… some way… a girl which I had a huge crush would notice me but this led to more self-induced let downs. How could I let such a woman, let alone a crowd that wouldn’t accept me get away with it… I manifested the hate, the embarrassment of wanting to fit in, the depression from the ingredients of a cliché family…to become vengeance. Yes, I wanted to kill myself many of times but my hormones and desire to have sex … kind of saved me. Sadly, I wish it was another topic that saved me but for now... ill leave it at that…sex. So, prior to this… I was seeing a psychiatrist and school psychologist ( did attend a special HS for students with Anger issues/depression or just plain psycho ) which had me take an array of medicines and such. All these pills did not help because the help I sought was the acceptance of the crowd I wish to belong apart of. So here I am… I had a teacher try to reach out to me on an emotional level to try and help me up so to say but all I could so is… think how I could Kil every student who was apart of the crowd, kill every teacher I found to be close to the crowd, and even teachers who I viewed as disowning of their own race (stupid and immature- this I know, but I was young and full of testosterone). Id write down plans on how to squeeze everyone running out of the same exits, so I could aim for the middle. Id come up with plans to blow and set fire to the sides exits as to force all to exit the building in one area... I had so many ideas and blueprints that it became my obsession. Long Story short- I want to fit in… I don’t fit in. I need help but I forced myself to believe my own medicine. On a Wed, I stated to a teacher, Fuck Off, you all will dead by Friday and I’m going to shoot all of you all & blow this school to hell. I probably didn’t say it like that but yeah… close enough. I got escorted out by the School Cop and sent home. School calls my mom and then I asked The Questions. I did tell my psychiatrist at the time but when I recall him writing more down on his notepad... I back tracked and said it was all a dream I had been having caused by the meds.
Its 2024- Columbine is the past which still shows its face yearly and all I can think... it all started with two teenagers who probably just wanted to fit in and have sex.
I am now 43 , on the verge of loosing my House, On the verge on getting Fired from my Career, Divorced for 5 years, wanting to kill myself but can’t being I will not be the cause of my mom’s heart attack which she would have- Another Story, and literally living on 50 dollars every two weeks.
Swing Set-
43yo and how the hell did I get here. Was it sleeping in the hallways of hotels and motels as my dad had affairs and didn’t want me to know ( id travel with my dad for his job in hopes of getting some bonding and love, I was around 7yo ) … was it my stuttering in elementary, was it when I punched a kid with a pacemaker in the 1st grade which had me paddled by a principle in heels ? was it my disgraceful pushing of my first GF to have 2 abortions when I was 17? Was it that I used zip lock bags for condoms when I thought you had to be 18 to buy them? OR was it that I left a loving church when I was 17, listed my anxiety panic attacks more than the love of my mother, dove headfirst into the pool of music sex drugs lust and life only to find out the pool I jumped into had no water and just became more ingredient of what my life would become…. FUCKED UP. The only thing that kept the shakes of Life at bay, was my only sweet candy 1mg Ativan! Surprised I didn’t abuse it!!! This I can assure you… I took it once or twice a day ( bad times that happen ) and now I just got off of it. SUCKS. I was on it since the aged of 20 to now… 43. I am trying to live in the moment and I tell myself… smile.. enjoy the moment….for tomorrow you may be dead or coming face to face with God. All that matters is the love for my mom and doing what I can to feel “okay” with God. I cant take a credit score, house, car, or paycheck to hell, heaven, or whatever is on the other side but I am positive its hell or heaven. Man I miss being a good Christian when I was a child. Yeah it was easier… no responsibilities…just being a kid ( still in a bad childhood ) finding comfort in a church and feeling loved. The problem also for me is this… when I am told not to do something.. I tke great joy in do those things. Don’t press the red button…. Well im going to press it and jackoff… and do it with a smile. Now… nothing is taboo anymore.. Nothing!!!! People are free to be what they want… So if you cant fit in… become what you want… which is damning. Many things need to be left taboo to let others such as myself take joy in doing things when told not to. Sensitive people ruining the days and nights… claiming to want freedom but all they do is make restrictions by their own desire and lack of others needs. YOU cannot savor the taste of freedom without some laws/restrictions. Even our own bodies have restrictions, without guidance, you have chaos and death. Where is the true pleasure in that. And will society admit, us as humans, we stereotype from the get-go, its our only way to perceive what’s out there and sometimes new. Safe or Dangerous, Good or bad. Its for the other side to help transform the initial stereotype or the leave it as is. We damn ourselves or we can pave the way for ourselves to better us. BTW… Porn was better when it was rainbow colored leaving us to view it sideways which enhanced our imagination. I am not talking about the alphabet group rainbow but… porn … when you had to view it on 99 and it was blurry as hell! Nothing is taboo! Depression Anxiety comes from our bodies which is always trying to adapt and push the envelope but becomes a chaos of a mess when parenting is has done all but the things it was supposed to do… to make a healthy child become an adult.
Am I an Adult- I pay my needed bills on time, but I am boke and losing my house/calife.
I feed myself but I am fat and over eat to kill the dark pains of life.
I go to work but wear a costume of having it together.
I am tough but inside I am weaker than an egg with a broken shell.
I love but love as child does… full heartedly and naïve.
I am now looking for hourly jobs in other states… telling myself... if shit hits the fan… I can just run away… live in a hooker motel and just breathe. Truth is…. I am only alive so if my mom is alive…. Unless God touches me one more time. I go to church here and there but I when I cry… I yawn and feel guilty. I do not want to go to church only when I need help… and how will I find a Christian woman that can deal with my fetishes unless gods touches me…let alone deal with a financial mess of a fat man that I am. I am a child stuck in an old man’s body. I am a so disillusioned that I use “ I “ way too much and offend others that are sensitive daily. Its not that I am sarcastic but come on.. we all hurt. BTW… I so Dislike the IRS! Welp… here I am.. writing on borrowed time not to be paid back… I did once had a rattle snake wrap around my led in a California orange orchid… didn’t bite me… and I was pissing too when the snake wrapped around my ankle. I also did have sex with a woman in which after, I jumped out her apartment window, ran across some field, jumped on a train and took off. I do like the song.. never marry a railroad man by shocking blue. Ill end with this… God if your reading this. HELP ME PLEASE! If not… let me see my daughters in heaven before you send me down to hell… and also let me hug my mom on last time.. even if she does not recognize me… I know shell be going upstairs… not certain about me right now though. Im just a lost child pretending to be a normal adult. I was not meant to be flooded with so many choices in life.. I would have been good with yes or no, left or right, a or b, and only seeing the primary colors… not the many shades of life!
We're the artist of our own lives, no one else! Every waking moment is a new clean blank canvas. If today is dark dull painful and full of history, well the next waking canvas morning, use brighter colors! We, you ... decide what colors to use and what to paint. We choose to be happy cause it is a choice but a tough one. Life is too short to live man's time. Live by your own paints, your own clock, and your beat!

2024.06.09 18:46 ATCurlzzz [TOMT] [Movie] Scene in which mother who is stranded with others on an island puts her dead baby in the sea

This is an older movie I remember watching once or twice from my childhood (early 2000s) and that specific scene has always stayed with me. For extra context, it’s an older movie 1990s or older (may be in black & white or early color). A bunch of people get stranded on an island, one who is a young mother with an infant that is usually wrapped in cloth. The tides are strong, there may be tree like huts created, resources are low, and for this specific scene the mother is in a smaller boat with a man who brings them just far out enough to sea in which the mother can bury her baby in the sea so to speak. Scene follows with a shot of the dead baby sinking in the ocean before they head back to the others.

2024.06.09 18:43 JoSenz Have we discussed DFV's average cost for his positions? His cost-basis isn't as low as I expected.

So just a little weekend motivation and encouragement as we enter another wild week, with the crazy man himself, Keith Gill, aka Roaring Kitty aka DFV back in the hot seat and multiplying money faster than JPow can print it. I was really surprised to see the average cost of his shares in his most recent YOLO updates and wanted to compare them with past value and present values. His average isn't as low as I expected it to and if someone were to walk in off the street and buy their first GME shares right now, they're basis would be really similar to DFV's. So here's how it shakes up.
YOLO Update, April 2021: 200k shares for $55.1774 average cost. Adjusted for the 4-for-1 split: 800k shares, $13.7944 average cost (ok, this is fairly low, like I expected.
But then he posted a YOLO update at the beginning of June and dude has massively expanded his position: 5m shares (+4.2m shares from 3 years ago) with an average cost of $21.274.
That means he bought his 4.2m shares at an average cost of $22.6987.
Then we have his options. He currently sits on 120k calls at $20 strike for an average cost of $5.6754 per contract. If he exercises all of those, he'll officially be sitting on 17m shares at an average cost of $24.3809.
That's only 15.74% up from Friday's close and 11.4% up from Friday's After Hours close.
What's my point? Probably a lot of apes here have a better average cost than DFV currently does, and dude is still YOLOing it all on RC righting the GME ship and taking this company to the next level. Dude's not an idiot, he's very calculated. Yes, he's a goof who puts on costumes and makes sophisticated memes, but let's not forget, he was a CFA and worked in the financial world for a good bit before making it big on Gamestop.
He's betting big on this play. He's always been betting big. But it's not like his current position is up 1000% and he's just laughing. We're barely higher than where his average cost is now, and he's still supremely confident in the thesis and sees massive upside from here.
Keep HODLing apes, something big is afoot. As a famous rocket scientist once said, "Buckle up."

2024.06.09 18:03 arcadialemonade I finally understand where my dysphoria stems from...

...thanks to you guys. I've been lurking the sub for a while, but I wanted to share my perspective and, who knows, maybe it will help someone. Bear with my anger for a bit.
Tw: body dysphoria
I (23F/NB?) live in a relatively progressive country. I have a nice family, nice friends, and my childhood was fairly normal.
However, I was an early bloomer. My boobs grew overnight, and I got my period when I was about 11. I remember everyone in my family celebrating the fact that "I was a woman now", even if all I could think about was the sheer amount of horror I felt when I looked at the blood-stained toilet paper. Now I know they didn't have any ill intentions, it's just the way society sees girls. So, the moment I hit puberty something clicked: my body was not mine anymore. It would never be mine again. My boy friends in school stopped talking to me. One of them came to me one day, looked at my boobs and said "woah, you are hot", and then ignored me for the rest of the year.
Now, I guess this is a universal experience for most people with a uterus. For some reason, we stop being kids way earlier than boys. Pervs honk when they see us walking down the street, or they stare at our boobs when they are talking to us. They don't give a sh*t that we are basically children.
The word I would use now to describe how I felt would be alienated. I was a nerd, so I was only approached by guys at least five or ten years older than me. They liked me because I was girly and guillible. It felt wrong. I felt like something was extremely wrong inside me. For a while, I stopped using the term "bisexual" and started considering myself a lesbian. I felt kind of better, but again, the women who approached me were far more "masculine" and wanted me to roleplay as the girl of the relationship. It felt awful.
On top of that, I started feeling extremely dysphoric. I hated my boobs, I hated my long hair, my soft voice and gentle manners. But most of all, I hated that my biology was flawed to the point where I would always be weaker than your average man. I felt useless and defenseless. What do you mean that any man could just throw me around if he wanted to? That thought still haunts me.
Recently, I reconnected with an ex boyfriend I broke up with because I was just so f*cking disgusted by myself, my body and my gender. We are dating again, and I'm extremely grateful for the fact that I'm comfortable enough to allow myself love and intimacy. I think that's partly because he's bi too, so he wouldn't care about whatever choices I end up making. He is CF, and I was a fence sitter until I met him. I always said "yeah, not gonna get pregnant. If I ever want kids, I'll just adopt". But I guess that my mind was still wired that way, and, deep down, I knew that everyone expected me to have bio children.
It's hard to be CF and "neutral" (speaking in terms of gender presentation) when everywhere you see moms just talking about the miracle of life. My reproductive organs disgust me because they remember me that nature made me to host a parasite inside my guts. Your average cisgender guy will live a life without experiencing the horrors that I (and half of the population) am bound to live with. What do you mean that these sacks of fat hanging from my chest not only hurt when I run or jump, but also make me feel like a sex object? What do you mean that I'll bleed monthly for 30 more years and then my body will fck me up in a bunch of other ways? What do you mean that my hormones can just control my mood and energy levels... forever? It's just so unfair. It's so fcking unfair. I could literally die from childbirth complications or post partum depression.
Not only do we have to cope with biological disadvantages, we also have to cope with the patriarchy! For a while, I tried to deal with my dysphoria by being ultrafeminine, but I felt like I was wearing costumes. It doesn't help that the image of the "empowered, independent woman" is a typically attractive, skinny and hot woman that appeals to the male gaze. I could never feel like an empowered woman if I was hairy and covered my boobs and chopped my hair myself at 3 a.m. with some kitchen scissors.
But yesterday I had a revelation. I was reading some rants in here that talked about dysphoria and the idea of pregnacy being "body horror". I found out I have a very bad case of tokophobia. But after reading how a lot of people are really happy and lead fulfilling lives being CF, I just kind of... Realized that I could be happy too. I guess I stopped being on the fence. Jesus, I can't imagine myself having to wake up at an ungodly hour because a random kid that lives in my house is crying. But I guess I said "whatever, maybe when I'm 30 or 35 the maternal instinct will kick in". Well fck no! Now that I have a CF boyfriend, I imagine my life in 10 or 20 years, I see myself having savings, fur babies and all the time in the world to play videogames, go on dates with my bf and just... Live life. I thought about my CF aunt, and how she spends the afternoons tending to her plants, painting and going out with friends. I realized that I could be more than my body, that I had a choice... In hindsight, it sounds kind of stupid. Of course I have a choice. But, when you grow up feeling like your body is: -a vessel for a parasite that will, no doubt, fck up your body -a sexual object -a fucked up machine with maaany flaws, especially when you compare yourself to men
God, it's so fucking hard to snap out of it. I'm so happy that I'm not alone in this journey. It's not easy, but I'm starting to accept myself. I don't even care about being considered a woman again, now that I understand that my dysphoria is mainly social. There's nothing wrong with my body, and there's also nothing wrong with finding it kind of gross and despising the idea of pregnancy. My boyfriend doesn't see me as a vessel or an object, he sees me as a human being. Maybe I was just unlucky in my past relationships, or maybe society sucks.
God, sorry for the long rant. If you are reading this, know that there's hope. I'm only at the beginning of this journey, but I feel like a weight was lifted from my weary shoulders.
Thank you for reading!

2024.06.09 17:43 BigRedHead1982 Help Remembering a Comic.

Hello, I'm trying to track down some old Comics from when I was a kid. I'm having trouble remembering a particular Comic Book. I'm not sure if it was a Spider-Man or a Hulk Comic. But I remember an image of Hulk ripping in half Spider-Man with sand coming out of him. As if it was just a Spidy costume filled with sand. Does this ring a bell for anyone at all? Or am I just mixing memories up to create an image that never existed?
Edit: It would have been an issue somewhere from the early 80s to the early 90s, maybe older, but not for sure.

2024.06.09 15:01 ibid-11962 Worldbuilding and Touring [Post Murtagh Christopher Paolini Q&A Wrap Up #10]

As discussed in the first post, this is my ongoing compilation of the remaining questions Christopher has answered online between August 1st 2023 and April 30th 2024 which I've not already covered in other compilations.
As always, questions are sorted by topic, and each Q&A is annotated with a bracketed source number. Links to every source used and to the other parts of this compilation will be provided in a comment below.
The previous post focused specifically on inspirations and other media. This installment will focus on Worldbuilding and Touring, how Christopher constructs his worlds, and how he goes about promoting them on tours. The topics aren't actually linked, but they both fill up around half a post and so are being joined here. The next and final post will focus on miscellaneous questions about the real world.

Worldbuilding

Creating Magic Systems
Did you have a research process when you were writing the Inheritance Cycle? I put a fair bit of thought into the story itself of the Inheritance Cycle, and then some general stuff as to the society and just kind of where things were in the world before writing it. I put a medium amount of thought into the magic system before I started writing, and then as I wrote the implications of it became much more apparent to me, and I really sort of dove deep into it. In retrospect, were I to create a fantasy world from scratch now, I would really put a lot of attention into that magic system and the society beforehand, just to have a good feel for that before I even start chapter one. I would put more restrictions on the magic too. I think the more restrictions, the more interesting, even the more realistic in some ways. [3]
If I were designing a magic system from scratch nowadays I would put way more restrictions on it because I find that the limitations are useful, I don't want the characters getting overpowered, but also just from a storytelling standpoint, incantations, rituals, spells, prayers, potions, all of those mechanical things are just kind of interesting and of course they give lots of opportunities for things to go wrong if you don't follow the correct steps. So I think if I were designing magic from scratch right now I'd put a lot of restrictions and rituals associated with it. So costs, more costs. [25]
What kind of hacks do you have to developing a magic system? Once I have a general idea of the setting, whether science fiction or fantasy, the first question I ask myself is how does it diverge from physics as we know it? Because that is a fundamental question that's going to determine what is possible in this world. It might determine what's possible with warfare, with politics, with industry, manufacturing, travel times, it could affect everything depending on what type of divergence you have. In the World of Eragon, the divergence is that living creatures have the ability to directly manipulate energy using their minds. The reason for that is kind of handwavy, although I have an explanation for it, but that is the divergence and then I tried to be as consistent and physically possible with it at every step of the way past that. When people play games you always get people who are looking how to exploit it. "What's the most I can get out of this game? What's the most I can do?" That's basic human nature. Science is a speedrunning nature I think. So the same sort of thing. You assume that if magic existed there's going to be someone sitting in their basement who's absolutely obsessive about it and is going to figure out every single advantage that that divergence gives them. And you have to be realistic and work that into your world and say "Well people aren't stupid. They are going to figure this out and use it in this way, and what are the implications, socially, physically, and everything else?" Once I have that then you can think about society and culture and everything else, but that basic physical difference from our reality is just to me fundamentally important to understand before I even begin to write. [25]
With standalones you're not dealing with continuity or what rule did you break or things like that. That's interesting, because I would say that writing a sequel for me is faster than writing a standalone. At least for me, the more I know the characters and the world, the faster, like I don't have to do the groundwork of creating a magic system, creating a society, creating the gods and the history. All that's done for me, so I can just slip into it like slipping on an old glove. [33]
Creating Religions
A socio-political religion in your world helps drive characters or stories or die-hard fanatic characters forward. How do you go about developing those? Have the courage to let your characters actually believe the things that they are supposed to believe. If you look back historically people really did truly believe these different religions and different systems. Too often I think with modern stories we have people only giving lip service to the supposed belief and instead having very modern attitudes toward it which perhaps doesn't always work. That's understandable if you want a character to be relatable to a modern reader, but there are so many examples of interesting belief systems throughout the world. To me that's something fascinating to write about. But the main thing is just accept that when people truly believe something they're genuine about it and then you can follow that from a logical and storytelling standpoint. What I'd also say is, if you're writing about something that is very different from your own belief system, assuming it's not like completely evil, to try to approach it with a sense of charity. With the understanding that everyone is searching for meaning and understanding. I've always had a soft spot for the old television show Babylon 5, because although I don't believe that the creator J. Michael Straczynski is religious, he writes all of his characters with great sympathy and understanding, he's never cynical about it, and he's not putting up straw man arguments or criticizing any of the characters. He's like "They're searching for meaning. They're struggling with the great questions as we all do, and each one is trying to solve those questions in their own way." And I always really appreciated that he wasn't being cynical about it or really shallow. [25]
Creating Languages
Did you think of the ancient language, not just as a mechanic, but also as a parable of our own language? I was thinking about how language itself feels like magic to me. You can write a story, you can convey information. Language in many ways is our greatest tool and makes us human along with, I would argue, our hands, our ability to manipulate objects and use actual tools. But one without the other wouldn't really work and wouldn't allow us to be a technological species. We could have language with no ability to handle tools, and then we wouldn't be what we are now. But I find language fascinating and I find the function of language incredibly interesting. And there is this idea in the real world going back to the beginning of time, that to name something is to understand it, and gives you a certain amount of power over it, whether that's a person or a physical object. And the ancient language is just taking that idea seriously. And I'm not the first author or tradition to do that, but is it a parallel? Is it a metaphor? I don't know if I'd go that far, but it definitely ties into the use of language and my ideas about it. What's crazy to me is there is a theoretical arrangement of words right now that would give us a massive breakthrough in science and physics. There's a theoretical arrangement of words that were I to write it or anyone else would influence how people think about the next presidential election to such a degree that it might actually changed the election. These are all theoretically possible and you can think of many many other things that you could do with language. We just lack the knowledge of what those arrangement of words are, and so we're constantly clawing our way toward new knowledge and new uses of language. [19]
The languages that you were playing around with in The Inheritance cycle, they were Germanic, Anglo Saxon based? The ancient language, the magical language, is based very strongly on Old Norse, which of course is Germanic or related to Old High German. The Dwarven language was invented pretty much from scratch although it is an agglutinative language like German is. And then the other languages have not appeared very much in the series. They're just little scraps here and there. To be clear, I am not a linguist, and I have not devoted the time and energy to developing these in a formal or rigorous way, the way that Tolkien did. Tolken was a linguist and that was his forte. I got far enough down that path while working on the Inheritance Cycle that I really began to appreciate how every word has a history and that history is inexorably tied to the history of the land. It's often said that Tolkien created Middle-earth just to explain his languages, as a setting for the languages. Which isn't entirely true, but there is truth to that. That's what I was encountering and I was realizing that I could spend 20 years, 10 years, just working on the languages and building this out. It might have been a worthwhile venture, but the tradeoff would have been no more books published during that time. I want to tell a story. [28]
What I would do these days, or what I did with other languages, is come up with a couple of words that sort of had a general feel that I liked and then extrapolating from those invented words, figuring out what consonants and vowels and clusters thereof that I wanted. Come up with some more sample words based off that and then start working out some grammar. Grammar is probably my weakest spot since at the time I wasn't really aware of non-English grammar systems and I've put some more attention in that since then. [34]
The language and culture that you describe in the books seem very real. How do you start inventing a language? You shamelessly steal from Germanic mythology and Scandinavian mythology, just like Tolkien did. But I'm no linguist, I did my best, I have a copy of the Nibelungen up on my shelf along with the Eddas, and I based one of my languages on Old Norse, which gave it a nice sound and feel. So the main thing is picking things that make sense for your world and then trying to be internally consistent. [2]
Creating Maps
At what point in your writing process do you start creating the map? I've created the maps at different times in different books. At first I thought I didn't need a map because I thought that a good book should be perfectly understandable without a map. You shouldn't need to rely on anything outside of the text in order to enjoy it. And I still think that's generally true, but a map can add a lot. So for Eragon, I did it partway through the book. If I were to do a stand-alone fantasy novel, I would definitely want to work out the maps and stuff before writing it. [12]
The map for Eragon, the original black and white map, I did about halfway or a third of the way into Eragon. My idea was, and I still kind of believe this, that a well-written book shouldn't need a map in order to understand the story. You should be able to keep your bearings just based off the text. What I ran into though was that I was getting lost in the world myself with the amount of places and things after a certain point. And so I drew a map. [34]
For me I think if you're creating something in the real world obviously that gives you certain constraints and certain advantages but if you're starting with something from scratch, I find creating a map right up front is really helpful because your story is not going to visit every square inch on your map so by filling in those other details on the map you're going to get more story ideas and also ideas for potential conflicts, travel distances. It all feeds into the realism of the story as well as potentially future stories. It's fun stuff. The downside is you could spend your whole life worldbuilding. There's a there's a book from World War Two called Islandia, and the guy just spent his whole life creating this island and its culture to the point of working out the actual layers of geography of stone in the island. I've never actually read the book, I don't know if it's any good, but I know it was fairly popular when it came out. [25]
What hacks do you have for for creating geography and points of interest within your world? When I was creating the map for Alagaësia I actually used a old National Geographic Atlas and traced over various coastlines and then distorted them and pasted on top of each other in order to get sort of a natural feeling coastline. Please don't compare the island of Vroengard to the outline of Greece. Please don't do that. And then you have Robin Hobb who just turned Alaska upside down for her map which I always love because I've lived in Alaska twice. I think she told me that she never actually expected the book to get published, but then she got stuck with that because everything was tied to the geography that she started with. [25]
I think that a good map ought to have lots of points of interest, and the tricky bit is, without getting so detailed that it becomes cluttered. You see that sometimes with real world maps, like atlases and stuff, where there's a ton of place names, city names, river names, road names. All of which are useful and necessary, but it can actually visually get in the way of the art, perhaps the artistic effect that you would want a fantasy map to have in a book or a movie or even a game. [12]
There are world generators that you can just click through. It's really easy nowadays with technology to build worlds just by snapping your fingers. Even with those tools, if you have the time and inclination, I think there is some benefit to redrawing or painting the maps in your own style. I don't know about you, I love seeing when the maps are from the author themselves. I remember Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn by Tad Williams. Tad did all the maps himself, and I love that. Even if it's imperfect or a little amateurish it just gives it a really nice feel. I love Tolkien's original art for the same reason. [25]
Creating Dragons
You are the creator of your own world. Do you feel that you have follow certain canons of fantasy worlds, for example, dragons have four legs and wyverns have two? Or do you feel that you can practically do whatever you want because it's fantasy and you create everything? Yes and no. No because I have already established rules and traditions and precedence in The World of Eragon, so I have to be consistent with that. But if I were writing a new fantasy, I would not feel beholden to any tradition. If I wanted to write a world where the dragons have three legs or feathers or something like that then I would feel free to do that. That's the great thing about speculative fiction is it gives you the freedom to write and create whatever you want to. The thing is when you have a genre where anything is possible it actually reveals the limitations of your imagination. And there are very few authors, myself included, who really make full use of that. But at the same time, limitations can make your fiction more interesting. I think it's important to pick some limitations and that will help actually improve the quality of your work. [7]
Why did you decide to have your dragons have a saddle? I was around horses growing up. And the thought of actually physically being on a creature with very hard scales was rather terrifying if thought about in a practical sense. And so it just seemed to me that there had to be some protection. [33]
When you're writing fantasy and you include dragons, especially a dragon rider fantasy, depending on how many there are there, it's actually quite a difficult thing to not solve all your problems with dragons. I think the solution to that is you focus on the problems that dragons present, which balances out the advantages. And of course people are smart, whether we're talking about humans or elves or dwarves or any other invented species. If dragons were real, you'd come up with counters to them, whether it's a bunch of giant ballistae on your walls, or building domed fortresses, or building underground. You would come up with solutions and it would negate those advantages. And that's always my issue with writing fiction with dragons in the real world. If it's a slightly more modern, then you have to ask, well, why isn't everything different in history? Like if dragons were a constant part of our world, architecture would be different, warfare would be different, politics would be different. Well, no, politics would be the same. What am I saying? [30]
I'm sure all of us have seen the fantasy paintings of like a knight in armor with a lance on a horse facing off against a dragon. Now, to be fair, a lance moving at a decent speed at a horse galloping will have enough kinetic energy behind it to punch through just about anything. It could do a lot of damage. But any decent sized dragon would move so fast and be so strong, you wouldn't have a chance with a lance. You'd need a giant crossbow. That'd be your only choice. The size of a dragon, intelligence of a dragon. Until you get to projectile weapons, you have no chance. [30]
We all know what any creature gets when they bond with a dragon. They get a dragon. But why would a dragon create that bond? Why would they do it? Is it the bond, is it their nature? I think for me, having other species bond with the dragons was essentially a way to keep the dragons from getting wiped out. Because dragons are such a huge threat. If you imagine in the real world, we don't suffer giant predators to be constantly predating and disrupting our world. We remove that threat. Especially if there's magic involved, the ability to remove that threat gets even bigger. So in a way I viewed the bond between rider and dragon as essentially self preservation for the dragons, if not the other species as well. Without some sort of symbiotic relationship, coexistence becomes very, very difficult. That, or the dragons have to be smart enough to just essentially remove themselves from the world and live off in the far off places. But that gets really difficult when you start considering how much they need to eat. I remember reading the Live Ship Trader series and I remember the end of that spoiler alert where it's become clear that true dragons have returned now. And it really was kind of an oh crap moment because you start thinking about what that actually means for there to be dragons in the world again. It's kind of like Reign of Fire. [30]

Promoting The Books

Touring Hazards
How did you do on your book tour? It was a lot. It was a lot. I did 50 days of touring last year between Fractal Noise and Murtagh. Obviously the majority of that was for Murtagh. And of course I had a couple other trips in there as well. I went to New York Comic Con. I had one or two personal trips. So there was a lot of travel last year. My goal is to not have as much travel this year. In general, the book tours were awesome, great crowds for the Fractalverse, enormous crowds for World of Eragon/Murtagh. I don't normally talk about this stuff, but since we're past it, it doesn't matter. I started touring for Murtagh November 6th and then got home for good on December 16th. But there's always a risk of getting sick while you're traveling. And I did pretty well in the US leg of things. And then over in Europe between the jet lag and not sleeping- I had a really amazing dinner, one of my publishers took me out to a three star Michelin restaurant. The problem was the dinner started at 8pm and didn't finish till midnight. And there were two or three desserts, and the last dessert was full of coffee, and I didn't realize it. Absolutely full of coffee. And I did not get to sleep until like four in the morning. And I only had three hours of sleep that night. So I think I got sick the day after as a result. I got so sick on the European tour that at one of my stops I had to call paramedics to my hotel room at 2 a.m. because I couldn't breathe. Ended up with bronchitis for the first time in my life. But I'll have you know, I did every event. I didn't miss a single event. I managed to do all my presentations and made it through in one piece. I've never, never backed down from doing an event, even while bleeding. Can you tell us a little bit about the time that you were bleeding in an event? Well, I was in Europe. I was touring for Inheritance, I'd already toured North America, and then I started in Europe, went to UK, and then I went to Australia and New Zealand. But first country was Germany, and I think I did Munich and Cologne, and then I ended in Berlin. And in Berlin, they had me in this wonderful theater that's like over 100 years old, which is very rare in the city, considering all the bombing during the war. And I'm backstage, which meant down in the basement of this theater. And there's like 500 people out waiting for me to make an appearance and there's someone introducing me and they say my name and everyone starts clapping. And of course you want to get on stage before the applause dies down. And the way you got onto stage in this theater was through a set of stairs. And it really wasn't even steps. It was almost like a ladder and it was wood. And the steps were so old that they were basically hollowed out from all the people that have gone up and down it over the years. So I'm scrambling up this and about halfway up, my right foot slipped off the edge of one of the steps because it was hollowed out and full speed, full strength, full weight, I slammed my shin into the edge of one of the steps, stumbled forward two more steps and did it a second time. But momentum, adrenaline, I keep going, I get up on stage, I waved to everyone. And fortunately for me, because I was speaking to a foreign audience, they had me sitting at a table with a translator and a presenter. So I got to sit down and the table kind of hit everything from view. And I start the presentation, start the event. And after about, I don't know, five minutes, I'm thinking to myself, okay, I've banged my shin before. We've all banged our shins before, but this really bleepin' hurt. So I looked under the table and the whole front of my jean leg on my shin is soaked with blood. There is blood dripping onto the floor and my sock is soaked with blood. So I poked my translator, the presenter next to me that I was doing a couple of events with, and I said, "Hey, look at this". And he glances under and his face just goes white. And I'm colorblind and I saw his face go white. And he said, "Do we need to call an ambulance?" And I'm like, "No, no, we're going to do this." So I did an hour-long presentation. And then I got up and managed to quickly limp over to a signing table. And no one really noticed that I wasn't feeling so hot. And I got behind the signing table, and I signed books for 400 or 500 people. And the funny thing is, I was traveling with this foreign rights agent publicist for Random House named Jocelyn, who was just an absolute beast of a woman. I love her to death. You have to understand, she did a European book tour with me while eight months pregnant. The woman was and is just very impressive. But she grew up on a farm. German family in the US, grew up on a farm. So I showed her my leg when I was sitting down to sign and she just looked at me and she said, "You need to go to the hospital?" I said, "Nope". She said, "I knew you were country. Good man." Slapped me on the back. So I finished signing and then I went back to the hotel and I had to get into a tub of water to soak my jeans off because the blood had dried and glued them to my shin. And the problem was I had a dent all the way down to the bone. And I really should have gone to a hospital because, sorry for the gory details, but what happens is when you get a dent like that, you lose the fat under the skin between the skin and the bone and it doesn't come back unless you get an injection to help it puff out and heal. And I didn't do that because I was on tour, there was no time. So the next day I had to fly to pretty sure it was Barcelona for the St. George Book Festival, which is a walking festival. So you have to walk from bookstore to bookstore in the city and do signings. But that was a bit rough. That actually took over a year to heal properly. I still have that dent. Stuff happens. I've heard some crazy stories with other authors. I'd rather it's my blood, not the fan's blood. [32]
Touring Difficulties
We've got blood and sweat, any tears from tour? On occasion. The biggest one is just being away from home. And if anything is a bit off for whatever reason, you can't just pop home and hold someone or do this or do that. It's just difficult to be that far away from home for so long. [32]
If you're not familiar with book tours, the way it often works is that you fly to a city, you get to your hotel room, you have a little bit of time to freshen up, maybe get some food and then you go to the bookstore and you do your event. And it has to be after people get off from work, so it tends to be a later evening event. If you have a large number of people show up, that means that that time spent talking and signing pushes fairly late in the evening. You go back, you get dinner, and if you're a semi-introvert like so many authors tend to be, you need some time to decompress, which means you probably stay up a little too late reading or writing. And then in the morning, you got to go get another airplane flight and go to the new city. All of which is fine, but going to the airport, doing those flights, with the time it takes to go through an airport these days, it means that the schedule has very little time in it. When I toured for Fractal Noise, the publisher one of the days had me fly from Tampa to Portland and I still had to do an event that day. Which I agreed to. It was my own fault because they had everything on the East Coast and I said, "Well, what about the West Coast? You know, I have readers on the West Coast. They need to get a chance to get a signed book." It was my own fault. But that can get rough when you're doing it for weeks on end at a certain point. You just can't recover. A day off? What's that? But it's a good problem to have. That people want to see you and want to read your books. It's an awesome career to have. [1]
I'm also a big fan of coffee naps. So I will drink a cup of coffee, usually my second cup of coffee, and then I'll go take a nap, and I will nap for about 30 minutes, because after 30 minutes the coffee wakes me up. And I find that 15 to 30 minutes is the perfect length of a nap for me, and if I go past that, I need to sleep for about three hours, because otherwise I get into the middle of a REM cycle, and if I wake up in the middle of a REM cycle, I'm just like groggy and drugged, and I feel worse than if I hadn't napped at all. And then of course, if you're on book tour, the way I have been for a while, you gain the ability to just close your eyes at any point and take a 10 minute nap 15 minute nap anywhere, and it at least helps you stay upright. [19]
Meeting Fans around the World
You just got back from the U.S. leg of your book tour — who’s making up the crowd? The readership is broad and probably older than it was back in the day. There are still a lot of 8-year-olds, but now there are grandparents, too. I’ve even met some kids who’ve been named after the characters, which is pretty amazing. Because people have been reading the series for so long, I tend to get a mix of incredibly detailed, hyper-focused, deep-dive questions about some of the lore, but also some more general ones about Eragon’s name. [16]
I'm sure you hear personal stories all the time especially at your readings and your your appearances. It must be lovely, and I guess overwhelming to connect with your fans. That's a good way of putting it: lovely and overwhelming. Everyone has their own personal history with these books. I have people showing up who named their children after the characters, or who've gotten tattoos. Oh my goodness, what's the one you get? Multiple Saphiras, Aryas, Rorans, a couple of Eragons. As a writer, you want people to read your stories, enjoy them, be affected by them. If they're affected so strongly they name their children after your characters, you feel pretty good about it. [28]
Are your European fans different from your American fans? I actually haven't met any children here who are named after characters from my books. That seems to be an American phenomenon. The language barrier sometimes makes it a little more difficult to talk to European fans. But the love for Eragon is just as strong in Europe as it is in the US. This is not your first time on tour in Europe. Is there something you're missing here? I actually noticed that hotels in Europe usually don't have ironing boards or irons. This is standard equipment in America. [24]
My great-grandmother was from Sicily and then my grandfather was from Bologna. I just found out recently that my grandfather as a child was tutored by Fellini's wife. [7]
My grandfather was the stereotype of an elderly Italian gentleman. He had a mustache, he cooked spaghetti and he made the most amazing red sauce for the spaghetti. He used too much profanity. He was quite the character. [35]
Amsterdam is a beautiful city, but if I had grown up here I would probably still have written fantasy, but it would probably have influenced the type of fantasy I write. [23]
I was just in Stockholm on book tour for my latest book. And I've sold a really large number of books, proportionally in Sweden, and I'd never been there before. And I was kind of curious what their thoughts and feelings were on it, given the fact that I have shamelessly pillaged, Anglo-Saxon Scandinavian mythology for my own work. And they said native Swedish authors don't write using their own mythology, they go into the more literary veins and they import and translate other authors who are writing about Scandinavian mythology and they enjoy it immensely, but it doesn't seem to be a homegrown thing for them, which is rather odd, I think. [30]
Old Norse is not so far from German, do you speak a little bit of German? I understand a fair bit. When I've done presentations in Germany, I've had children ask me questions in German, and I can sometimes understand the entire question without translation, but I only speak a few words. [Host 2]: Let's try it. Can you ask the next question in German? Of course. Oh dear. Translation please. That was not fair. But funny. Yeah, I was just asking, when you started writing the book, and it became not just one book, it became a whole world, it became a series, and I don't want to spoil anything, but if you read the first books and you read the later books, stuff comes up again, and it seems like you actually knew where it was going when you started writing, which is again insane because you were 15. Is that something you just got lucky, or did you really plan for a whole series when you started writing the first one? I planned because I tried writing some stories before Eragon, and I never got past the first five or ten pages because I didn't have a story. I would only have an inciting incident, like a young man finds a dragon egg in the forest. Well, fun, awesome, but that's not a story. So Eragon and the series as it was, was a writing exercise for myself to see if I could outline, plot, and then write at least the first book of a series. So yes, if you read the first book, Eragon, there's actually a scene, a dream sequence in the first book. And it is the very last scene of the last book. And I did that specifically so that I could point to it and say to my readers, "See, I knew what I was doing." But of course, it isn't the last book now. [2]
Before he finished signing them all he asked if I read Fractal Noise, I said yes. He then asked how I liked it. I said I liked To Sleep far more. And to be fair I did. But I could've been a little more less brunt about it. All in all I'm sorry Paolini. I hope you see this. Dude -- No need to apologize! I was the one who put you on the spot. I was just curious about Fractal Noise as it's pretty different from what I normally write. That said, I'm a big boy, and it doesn't bother me in the slightest if someone prefers one book over another. [R]
Have you been on TikTok? How do you find it? I have an account that my assistants post content on for me because I don't have the time and I don't want it on my phone, but it has been a really useful way to connect with readers, and I had a lot of people who came up during my book tour end of last year, who said that they found out about the events I was doing from the posts on TikTok. [33]
Outside of the tour, did you do anything to personally celebrate the release of Murtagh? No. Not to sound blase, but this isn't my first book I've released. Going on the tour is the celebration. Getting to meet the fans. It's an enormous expenditure of energy, time, effort, and it's very joyous and touching and meaningful for me. And I think for a lot of the readers. So that's the celebration. My team and I, we all kind of take a moment to pat ourselves on the back every time a book comes out and then it's back to the grind a bit. Also, I got to celebrate my 40th birthday while on book tour, and I got to celebrate it with my editor, my publicist, my former publicist who's been with me since the beginning. So that was really nice. [32]
Appearance
Being an author is like the best kind of semi-celebrity, because nine times out of ten, no one knows who you are, you can live a nice quiet life, and then you get to go out and meet people who like your work. And that's a real treat. I grew the beard partly to keep people from recognizing me. But then I've had it for so long that it doesn't work anymore. And I got tired of shaving. But the problem is the beard takes so much time and effort to take care of it, it doesn't save me any time. [1]
Did your hat end up getting fixed post-tour? Yup. Fixed it myself with a rivet. [T]
Any advice on how to wear a pirate's hat without it being weird? It's very simple. There's one ingredient. You wear it with confidence. That's all. [36]
Signing Books
People people don't maybe don't realize what an endurance race it is, especially when when books are this big and successful. Like the amount. I once did 9,280 books in an afternoon and a half at a warehouse. I had nine people helping. I stood. I find that if I stand, I don't use my wrist. I can isolate the arm. And I just had someone shove it under me, someone pull it out for me, and everyone else was boxing, unboxing and flapping. But it hurt. It really hurt. I dropped my first name this past year. For the first time in a 20 year career, I finally dropped my first name. Did you feel defeated? Yes. But I have kids now and I just could not afford the time and the strain on my body. I actually got two typewriters. I got really bad inflammation in my right thumb from all the signing and I find that typewriters alleviated that. Also heavier like mechanical keyboards seem to help. So I know like Robin Hobb has suffered some severe problems with her hands with the amount of typing she's done over the years. So yeah, it is an occupational hazard. [33]
I have to say, signing 30,000 sheets is SIGNIFICANTLY harder than mining or placing 30k blocks in #Minecraft. Lol. [T]
Do you have a PO Box or something? I’d pay shipping both ways to have you sign my books. P.O. box is listed on paolini.net. Just include return shipping, please. :D Alternatively, you can arrange signed copies through Conley's Books & Music in Livingston, MT. [R]
If I send a book to a P.O. Box and pay for shipping there and back, would you sign it? Yup. Address is on paolini.net [T]

2024.06.09 12:25 theniceownerr Top 10 Female Fantasies

I was just doing a little online shopping when I discovered a list of the supposed top 10 women fantasies, and I was curious if you ladies would agree, disagree, or if you think others need to be added or deleted.
  1. Sex with a stranger.
Whether it’s a handsome guy they’ve eye spied in a bar after a few drinks or even a hot guy they’ve noticed at the beach, women often fantasise about what it would be like to have sex with a stranger. Is it the intrigue or the challenge perhaps? Maybe it’s the appeal of no-strings-attached sex with an anonymous man that they’ll probably never see again. Western society generally doesn’t approve of such conduct – so perhaps it’s the allure of an opportunity to rebel against societal attitudes that makes sex with strangers so exciting. Sex with a stranger allows a woman to be totally selfish with her only objective being self gratitude. She can focus on her own sexual satisfaction and not his. And she doesn’t have to be concerned with his judgement of her. It’s easy to see how this can be appealing to women.
  1. Role play.
Role play is a top fantasy for both men and women. Women’s fantasies might include sex with a police officer, a fireman, their dentist, a tradesman, their yoga instructor – in fact all types of men. Women also like to dress up and play someone else. And it’s not just the naughty nurse or school girl role that women want to play. Sometimes its anonymous roles that incorporates wigs, elaborate costumes and even masks. Role playing can be fun and it’s a great way to introduce variety, spice and excitement to one’s sex life!
  1. Dominating a man (being a dominatrix).
There are many ways a woman can dominate a man in the bedroom. It could be through BDSM with bondage restraints and some light discipline (for mutual pleasure – without pain) or it could simply be by straddling a man during sex and forcing him to do what she wants. Not all men like being dominated in the bedroom (or like the idea of pegging) so it’s always better to explore the topic before pulling out ropes, strap-on’s or other accessories.
  1. Dominated by a man (being submissive).
Most women like a dominant and confident man in the bedroom – in contrast to one that they have to ask or tell what to do. Long before E.L. James penned Fifty Shades of Grey women were fantasizing about sexually dominant men. Yes some women enjoy, or want to experience, some forms of BDSM but what most women love is seduction. Seduction can be likened to psychological domination. They like a man to be in control in the bedroom and they’re often addicted to men who are sexually dominant. Guys it’s time to man up!
  1. Coercion and forced sex.
When a woman says she fantasizes about being rped she doesn’t literally mean forced sex where aggression, coercion, violence or sexual violence are used. I personally don’t like the use of the term rpe and think such fantasies should really be considered as nothing more than being ravished by a dominant man. I can see how some women might dream about being pinned against an alley wall and ravished by a lustful stranger – with all her inhibitions left at home. This scene wouldn’t actually have any violence but instead in this ‘pretend scenario’ a woman can experience her rawest, most unconstrained sexuality, expressed with reckless abandon and without being impeded by any sense of danger. This scene is diametrically opposed to actual r*pe. It could be a potentially exhilarating experience for the female and is actually about willingly surrendering herself to a non-aggressive male.
  1. Sex in a public place.
Sexual fantasies can push the boundaries a bit – yours and societies. For instance having sex on the beach at night in some countries, like the US, can lead to jail time. What sounded like a great adventure could easily result in a disaster. Whilst we all like to throw caution to the wind sometimes we need to consider and assess the risks first (ideally before alcohol has any part in the decision making process). Pushing risks aside there is something very exciting about having sex in public places – whether it be the beach, the park, the bottom of the Eiffel Tower or in the toilet at a bar. And there’s a strong temptation for many people to engage in it! The prospect of getting caught makes it more ‘naughty’. Usually women’s fantasies don’t include getting caught having sex in public places but sometimes they do.
  1. Threesome with another woman.
This normally involves the woman being the center of attention and being pleasured by both a man and a woman. Most men would hope that they get some playtime with the other woman, but alas this isn’t usually part of a woman’s fantasy – no it’s all about her sexual satisfaction. Most women don’t want to see their man touch, or be touched by, another woman. They want the interlude to be all about them – and as most men love being voyeuristic, and assuming they understand the potential for jealousy issues to arise, they’re cool with this scenario.
  1. Threesome with 2 men.
This fantasy can be the ultimate taboo for many women hence making it even more exciting. In this scenario the men are both heterosexual and they both worship her (with zero interaction with each other). Again the woman envisages herself as the center of attention having pleasure lavished upon her by both men. In today’s judgmental society women who live out this fantasy may be ‘frowned upon’ however I personally think it’s great that they choose to do so. Any combination of threesome sex should be thought through and discussed first to help avoid jealousy issues. And remember that prior permission is less problematic than asking for forgiveness after.
  1. Group sex.
There’s an obvious overlap here with threesomes. Is it the allure of being simultaneously stimulated by multiple people that has women fantasizing about group sex? Perhaps it’s the prospect of having sex with someone without the emotional attachment that makes this fantasy so exciting. In any case swinging with another couple, or multiple couples, is very popular in western society. Some swingers like to play at home whilst others like to attend swingers clubs to broaden their choice of playmates (and to be watched having sex by others).
  1. Sex with a gorgeous woman.
It’s common for ‘straight women’ to fantasize about having sex with another woman. And if they do then this doesn’t mean they’re a closet lesbian or even bisexual. In fact in sexology terms if a person is open to different experiences they are ‘sexually fluid’. There are many reasons why a woman might fantasize about having sex with another woman. Sometimes it can be because they appreciate her curves or her beauty. It can be the intrigue of what it would be like to sex with her that’s the appeal or the thought that another woman might be more passionate and tender than a man (and who might know where her clitoris and g-spot is) that has some women craving erotic adventures with another woman.

2024.06.09 09:33 Joey_Pajamas Discussion: The Phantom's Costume is not Iconic Enough

On another site someone commented that the Phantom's Costume/ suite/ uniform/ whatever you want to call it, is not iconic or interesting enough to BE iconic. For reference, this came from a discussion about the characters' relative lack of success in the US.
Compared to modern, and even contemporary, characters his costume is rather different. The main difference is that he doesn't have the large logo/ symbol on his chest as introduced by Superman. I could also be argued that his costume is somewhat plain, with only really the belt and striped undies to break up the design. Comparatively, Superman has the S and cape, Batman the iconic cowl and silhouette, or Spider-Mans web-design.
There is a design philosophy that a good design should be instantly recognisable from it's silhouette. Batman is a perfect example with the cowl ears and cape, but this is better illustrated by characters such as Mickey Mouse or Sonic the Hedgehog. It could be argued that the Phantom's silhouette doesn't have any recognisable elements.
All that said, the character has never been out of print since 1936. While he might not be successful in the US, there are plenty of countries where he is. Obviously something is working.
So what do you guys reckon? Is the costume iconic? Should it be updated? Be interested to hear your thoughts.

2024.06.09 06:24 so_sick_of_flowers I feel like a ghost

I feel like I’m invisible. Nobody sees me. Nobody hears me. I’m alone even amongst the people I love. These people all laugh and have fun with a woman in a costume. I play man every day while barely holding myself together. I do everything to keep people at a distance so that I don’t have to keep on lying to everybody. So I don’t have to pretending to be someone I’m not.
I don’t even see my own face in the mirror anymore. My body disgusts me to the point of nausea. My voice sounds like nails on a chalk board. I feel like I’m wearing someone else’s skin. I’m God’s mistake.
I’m trying to get everyone I know to hate me so they won’t be upset when I’m gone. They wouldn’t miss me anyway. They’d all miss the lie I constructed for them. They’d miss the false person I presented to the world.
I’m so miserable. I’m sorry I’m posting so much negativity. I’m sorry everyone.

2024.06.09 04:47 Negative-Eleven Free with Ads - Emily's comic con is DragonCon

I'm listening to Emily describe her ideal comic con experience and she's describing DragonCon. And now I have to pause it because Jordan's favorite part of cons is also better at DragonCon.
DC is held over 5 days, in 5 hotels in Atlanta. Three of those are connected by sky bridges, and if you are super lucky with booking a room, you don't have to go outdoors the whole time. There's a sorta convention center a block away with 4 stories of vendor hall type con stuff, but you can completely miss that. There's celebrities, though often not as famous as the ones at SDCC. They'll hold panels all day every day for their obscure tv shows, and in between, there's 2 huge spaces on a lower floor at the Marriott where you can wait in line to pay for selfies and autographs. Often, minor celebrities can be seen at the bars after hours as well. Some examples: In 2019, right after Doom Patrol began airing, I walked up to a guy in a perfect Robotman costume who needed someone to help take a photo of him with the guy he was talking to. I complimented him on the costume, then looked at the other guy's name (everyone has a con badge with their name) and instantly knew why Robotman was stuttering and acting shy. The guy who wanted a picture with him was Richard Case, the Doom Patrol comic artist from the iconic late 80's run. Someone asked me for a photo of my costume in 2014. I wanted to tell him that he looked exactly like Pierre Bernard from Conan, but I didn't have to, cause his name was on his badge and it was him. Definitely watch his old Late Night sketch about getting a one-day DragonCon badge that was inferior to the full weekend badge, from his recliner of rage.
The indoor pool at the Sheraton (er... it was renamed last year, but I forget the new name) is accessible, and I know because the G.I.Joe costume club always has a little get-together there after the parade on Saturday. If you have a room key at the Marriott, you can get to that pool. I found that out last year as part of a group of 40 or 50 people, dressed as the prisoners from Andor, when we marched through three hotels, single file,, chanting "one way out" and ended with a group photo at the Marriott pool.
That convention area (Atlanta's AmericasMart) also has a huge space for gaming. People are running tabletop games of all levels during the day and there is a big arcade set up all weekend. I have friends who attend every year just to get their fix of Dance Dance Revolution.
I feel like DragonCon is the Olympics of Costuming. It's a sort of home to the 501st Legion, as it was founded in SC in the late 90's but the first major multi-state meetup of the members who only knew one another from the internet took place at DragonCon. There's a huge costume contest on Friday and a Masquerade (fancier contest) on Saturday. All weekend groups get together for giant photoshoots. I believe James Gun and some folks from Marvel Comics were actually at the big Marvel group photo, and that's where I stood in line to get my pic holding Loki's scepter from Avengers. They also had a screen used Infinity Gauntlet, but I wasn't gonna wait in another line. There's panels and workshops to learn cosplay, or you can just spend all weekend in the Marriott lobby looking at fictional characters who could have just stepped right off the screen. The mashups and sexy versions of unsexy characters are brilliant. Thursday night is the "Bunny Hutch" party in the Hilton ballroom, where lots of people dress as Hugh Hefner and vintage Playboy Bunnies, but also every fandom can be combined with Hef and Bunnies. That party is gonna be full, with a long line to get in, but that just means all 5 hotels are full of those costumes on Thursday night. I am typically wearing my Boba Fetish (from G4) costume on Thursday, but one year some friends convinced me to do a red/black bathrobe, sock garters and slippers with my Destro head and amulet as part of a sexy Cobra group.
Back to the hotel bars... the whole place is basically a bar. The actual hotel bars close at some point after 2am, but the veteran con-goers all bring their own booze and there's no rule that says they can't share. If you're friendly, you'll find a Batman with a utility belt full of minibottles. There's a meme that used to circulate saying everything at SDCC (unique merch, movie trailers, celebrities saying something stupid) will be online within a couple of days, but you can't upload the experience of doing Jello-shots with Skeletor and He-Man.

2024.06.09 04:22 psych0kvltz Old unsolved mystery with a cryptid?

I watch a lot of unsolved mystery videos on YouTube. I remember watching ocryptic? A long time ago that mentioned a strange case where two children came across some sort of man/creature and I can't for the life of me remember. I think it took place in UK (but I may be wrong) and it happened a long time ago. If I remember right, the kids spent the whole day with this strange being but when they went back to where they found it, the creature was completely gone. They never saw it again. I think it was some man in a costume of some sort? And he was living in like a shack in the forest or something. But again I could be wrong.

2024.06.09 04:10 rawchickenfillet It could be so much better.

I think the concept for the show is really good. It sort of reminds me of Traitors and Survivor. But bro, they’ve got to stop with the mountain-keeper chopper thing. It’s so cringe. The ominous music, the chopper just “hovering” to intimidate, and acting like the person in the chopper has a vendetta against the contestants. And the contestants talking about the mountain-keeper like they’re scared of what they’ll do next lol. These people have to go back to their real lives, how are they not embarrassed. I can’t be the only one that finds this super cringe right? It doesn’t need all that, and it just is distracting from the show in my opinion. They’d honestly be better off with a man in a big foot costume popping out of bushes from time to time. If you’re gonna go cringe, just go all out cringe. Really ham it up.
And then the host just popping up out of no where acting like he’s pissed off lmao. What for?! I just can’t with this. Admittedly they’ve improved a bit since season one, but I couldn’t believe they’ve kept the mountain-keeper thing.
I wish they would take a leaf out of shows like ‘Alone’ and just let the natural drama of being out there in the wilderness be the drama and intrigue.

Boys: Justin, Ripper, Topher
Girls: Anne Maria, Jasmine, MK
Episode 19: The Princess Pride
"Last time, on Total Drama Action! Just when the cast thought they were safe, I swung in to surprise – I mean, antagonize them."
"The cast were forced to use their creative sides while showing off their back sides. As they made superhero costumes out of spandex. And...some other junk. Nice tights!"
"Of course, they were foiled by the diabolical Pythonicus, evil alter-ego of the villainous Chef!"
"In a fight against evil, the cast proved they could be heroes. And also, loooseerrss!"
"In the end, the most diabolical of them all was MK, who twisted things in order to get Chase eliminated."
The recap footage ended, and the scene flashed to the control tent where Chris was waiting with a smile. "Will the Gaffer alliance recover from Chase being gone? Will Anne Maria and Topher keep going out?" he pressed a button on the keyboard to his side, causing a picture of the couple to appear on one of the screens behind him.
"Maybe you'll find out right now?" he shrugged impishly as the scene changed again and he walked towards the cast trailers. "Maybe you won't? On another, totally dramatic episode of," he stopped in his tracks and the camera zoomed out with each further word, "Total! Drama! Action!"
(Theme Song)
The episode began with, of all things, a close-up of some brown and beany mush plopping onto a plate. The camera panned up to reveal its source as burrito beans in the hands of Jasmine being put together. Shots of Ripper, MK, and Justin also showed them making burritos as well.
The camera zoomed out to show the four constructing burritos on the table next to the tent's entrance while Topher and Anne Maria were at the other table, the former overseeing the quartet as he stood on the table and the latter simply applying lipstick to her lips.
“Ten more seconds, guys! The biggest burrito wins!” Topher declared and looked at Anne Maria. “Do you think I'd make a good reality show host?”
Anne Maria put her lipstick away. “Can you excuse me? I'm working on my facial features,” she said.
“But you already worked on yourself in the morning,” Topher said.
“You'd do the same if your hair was lookin’ messy,” Anne Maria retorted.
“Touché,” Topher pulled back.
“And time is up, folks!” MK informed everybody with her watch.
"Ripper, what do you got?” Topher asked the burly boy.
“Allow me to demonstrate my beefcake burrito!” Ripper held up his plate - his burrito has no wrapping and simply consisted of beef shaped into a cake. “I actually managed to make a cake out of beef.”
“How interesting,” Topher observed after getting off the table. “Jasmine, how about you?”
“These are my twin burritos!” Jasmine said with a plate that had two burritos tied together with an elastic rubber band.
“You actually wrapped your burritos?” Topher inspected heavily.
“Of course I did,” Jasmine nodded. “Twins are sometimes inseparable, and it's a good thing that these burritos aren't Siamese, otherwise they would have tried to eat one another.”
Topher laughed at her quip. “Points for that quip,” he said and made his way over to MK. “MK, how did you manage to make your burrito?”
“I am proud to present the MK Whopper!” MK took her burrito out from under the table and presented it - the burrito was shaped to look like MK with the beans as the body, wrap pieces as the hat and clothes, a sliced piece of tomato as the mouth, and pieces of beef as the eyes.
“The burrito is self-serving, but quality effort regardless,” Jasmine commented.
“Quality? Check out the guns on these beans,” Justin objected as his leitmotif played and he whipped out his burrito shaped to look like a flexing bicep. He even flexed his own bicep and moved his eyebrow in order to impress the contestants, but they were unfazed. “Nothing. You feel nothing?”
“Nope,” Jasmine shook her head.
“I was never once into you, Justin,” MK added as well.
“Man, this scratched schnoz has destroyed my looks and my life!” Justin moped. “Why?”
“MK, your self-art and ego is unsurprising, but you did make the biggest and best burrito, so you win,” Topher told her.
“This isn't right,” Justin protested and was now out of his seat. “I demand a second neutral opinion.”
“I'm no doctor or anything, but we all have reality-show-itis, and it's making us turn things into a challenge,” Anne Maria spoke up.
“I'm not sure if that's a thing, but I can't help myself when this day is bland and boring,” Topher said.
Confessional: Justin
“When my good looks went, so did my winning edge,” Justin told the viewers. “But some people are still managing to kick butt, and they're not nearly as good looking as I am!” He paused to think about what he said. “Okay, as I was.”
Confessional Ends
Justin was now sitting next to Anne Maria. “You know, you're the only one taking the game seriously. I just wish I knew how you did it all. It's so inspirational.”
“I'm just playing the game the best I know how,” Anne Maria said. “And it's not by sabotage like Scott did to me.”
“Scott also sabotaged my chances in the game as well,” Justin continued. “Hey, we have something in common.”
“Yeah we do, now go away,” Anne Maria ordered. “I don't know if they'll be a challenge, and I'd like to relax in peace.”
A few off-camera footsteps gave everyone pause, and they looked towards the room's entrance as the shot moved to a side-view of the room. Chef Hatchet had entered wearing a faded purple Medieval-styled costume, complete with a simple horn bearing a flag marked with a simple black-and-purple shield.
He blew a few awkward notes, then the camera moved in for a close-up as he made an announcement. "Hear ye, and rise! For Sir Chris!"
"Sir?!" Jasmine repeated with disbelief. "This Bruce's ego is fussing me to heaps!"
The shot moved back out to show Chris McLean riding atop the same decrepit-looking horse that had been used for a much earlier episode. He was wearing a knight's helmet and holding what looked to be a boot made of glass, and dismounted once Chef laid out a small rug for him to stand on.
"Hold on," Topher said slowly. "Glass slipper. Medieval stuff. This must be a Fairy Tale theme!"
"Topher," Chris said with stern annoyance, "if you ever steal my intro again, I'll have to personally boot you off the show."
"Hey, you can't do that!" Topher protested. "You brought me onto this show!"
"This boot," Chris said happily, "will determine the Princess for today's Fairy Tale movie challenge! The rest of you," he added as the camera panned across the tent from right to left, "compete for the honor of rescuing the fair Princess."
Anne Maria immediately raised her hand eagerly. "I wanna be the Princess!"
"I said the fair Princess," Chris repeated. "And what we think is fair is that the candidates be the ladies who haven't had a win since the merge: MK," he looked at the unamused techno, "and Jasmine." The focus moved to the Outback girl, who merely raised an eyebrow.
Confessional: Jasmine
"Okay, I am not Princess material," Jasmine said in the make-up confessional. "Not only am I too tall to fit the role, but I'm not really interested in fairy tales."
Confessional Ends
A short drumroll preceded an even shorter chanted note as MK and Jasmine approached the end of the table closest to the tent entrance.
"Yeah, there's no way that I'm gonna be some Princess, McLean!" MK barked at the host who was standing nearby with the glass boot still in his hand. "And don't even try to jam that boot on my foot."
"Okay," Chris said slowly, "that's a no for MK. Jasmine, you're up."
"Well, I'm not fond of fairy tales," Jasmine said, "but I might as well."
"Hold on there, Thunder from Down Under," Chris told her. "You have to put the boot on first. Make sure you're actually Princess material."
Jasmine frowned. "Okay then." She sat on the end of the table, slipped off one of her shoes, and tried to force it on.
The host and other castmates watched as she grunted and began to sweat, trying to get the boot onto her foot. Eventually, she let out a disappointed breath and held the boot back up. "It's no use," Jasmine told the host. "I can't get it on, and even then, it would shatter to pieces."
"Well," Chris said blankly, "guess that's both candidates out, unless MK changes her mind."
MK just glared at him. "Not a chance."
Anne Maria immediately grinned. "Yo Chris!"
"Looks like we have to do another selection method," Chris grabbed the glass boot and began to turn, only for Anne Maria to dart forward and snatch the footwear away from him.
Anne Maria swiftly tossed aside one of her heels and replaced it with the glass boot. "There," she said with a smile, raising her leg to show the boot glimmering on the end of it, "I always knew that I was meant to be royalty!"
"Fine, Anne Maria can be the Princess," Chris said heavily. "Let's just get this over with. Chef?" he looked back over his shoulder, and the shot pulled back to show the hulking man arriving back on the scene. He had changed into a pale blue ballerina's outfit, and had strapped a pair of fake wings to his back that, along with the glittering 'wand' in his hand, gave him the appearance of a fairy godmother.
"I dub thee, Princess Anne Maria," Chef said shortly as a touching song played, waving the wand above the grinning girl's head and releasing a cloud of sparkling dust that nearly choked Topher, Ripper, and Justin.
Confessional: MK
"Anne Maria as the Princess?" MK told the confessional camera with a snort and a laugh. "I wouldn't want to be in that Fairy Tale. Along with any others out there."
Confessional Ends
A harp played in the background as an image of Chris' head and a large hardcover book appeared on screen in front of a yellowish stock background. "It's story time, with uncle Chris," the host's disembodied head said before the scene flashed to him seated in a large purple armchair with the same book in hand. His left hand was on a joystick built into the arm of the chair, and he seemed to be slowly rolling through the set.
"Once upon a time," he began slowly, the camera pulling back to show the host rolling up to the contestants minus Anne Maria on a wheeled platform, his chair joined by a matching footstool, pedestal side table, and even a fireplace. "Five brave knights went on a quest to rescue a Princess from her ivory tower." He pulled back on the joystick, and the platform came to a stop. "But, it wasn't gonna be easy! First," he looked at the staircase behind him, "the knights had to get past my very good friend," the shot quick-panned up and left to Chef, now dressed in a tattered vest and trousers with a long moss-green wig and beard, "the Terrible Toothless Troll!" The shot zoomed in on Chef as he quickly blackened a few of his front teeth with a sharpie. "And, his Bad Breaks Bridge!"
The camera zoomed out even further as a few ominous chants played in the background, showing a large mountainous set featuring a rickety rope bridge over a treacherous and craggy fake waterfall. The contestants gulped.
"To get past the Terrible Toothless Troll," Chris read on, "the knights had to wear disguises! There was the Frog Prince," he grabbed a vaguely frog-like great helm from behind his chair and tossed it to Justin, "and the Ugly Stepsister," he tossed a large wig of wavy red hair in a tall bun to MK. "Snow White," he tossed a pink sleep mask to Jasmine, "and one of her Seven Dwarves," he followed that up by throwing a tall wizard's hat patterned with stars, moons, and lightning bolts to Topher. "Aaand," the host finished by pulling out a bright red hooded cape, "Little Red Riding Hood."
He tossed it to Ripper, who raised an eyebrow as he caught it. "Seriously? Can't I just be Riding Red?"
"No dice dude. That's what it says in the script," Chris told him as an unseen intern delivered a plate of milk and cookies to the host's side table. He turned and grabbed one, saying "Good work, kid," before continuing his monologue. "And so, the Ugly approached the Terrible Troll."
"I can't see in this thing!" MK said.
"Oh yeah," Chris said to a dramatic rise in the background music, "for this challenge, each knight is blind." The five teens immediately began to protest, causing the host to snap at them. "Nowhere in this story does it say 'the cowardly knights complained'!" he told the cast with a brief glance at his book. "So get it together, steppy, and get crossing!"
The footage skipped ahead to show MK slowly inching her way across the bridge while holding on to one of the rope rails. "This ain't too bad," she said to herself. She was hit by several red apples in rapid succession, causing her to yelp in pain.
"Oh, also," Chris said as the shot cut back to him, "those are Wicked Witch's apples, so, they're poisonous and rotten. You might wanna watch..."
He stopped talking as the shot cut back to MK slipping on one of the apples and fell off the bridge to the rocky set below. The camera followed as she fell and bounced off of several outcroppings before landing onto the hard ground. The shot cut briefly to the other contestants as they winced in pain before cutting back to the techno girl lying awkwardly on the ground with an apple in her mouth.
"Well, looks like MK isn't fairy tale hero material," Chris commented, dunking one of his cookies into his glass of milk. The short girl writhed in pain.
Confessional: MK
MK had on a neck brace and bandages around her head and torso, "I'm having trouble remembering what happened after the fall. Does that mean I have a concussion?"
Confessional Ends
A harp was played as the footage cut back to the other contestants standing at the start of the bridge. "Next, the eighth dwarf," Chris said as he moved his platform around towards the far staircase. "He grabbed a fistful of courage and headed across the bridge."
Topher glanced over at Chef. The man had hunched over, and was slapping a cat o' nine tails against his hand with a wild grin. He took a deep breath, put on the wizard’s hat over his eyes, and charged forward with a battle cry. Chef raised his eyebrows and rushed out to stop him, but he jumped onto a rope rail and ran through it until he was past Chef.
"Did I make it?" Topher asked, having reached the other side.
Confessional: Topher
"Poise classes have taught me to always be aware of my surroundings, whether I’m blindfolded or not," Topher grinned. "And with Anne Maria as the Princess, I’m not botching this one."
Confessional Ends
The footage skipped ahead to Jasmine's attempt, the sleeping mask already over her eyes and her hands firmly on the ropes of the bridge as she walked forward at a steady pace. Chef squeezed a mother goose, launching a golden egg out of its rear like a bullet. It shot past the girl's shoulder. "What was that?" Jasmine asked as she moved her head to track it. A second egg hit her square in the chest, knocking her back a step and putting a grin on Chef's face.
Jasmine frowned for a moment, then took a cautious step that was apparently at the bridge's weak point. The camera zoomed in on the bridge as it rippled, knocking loose every plank all the way to Chef. With a gasp and a scream, the troll and his goose fell, and the scene cut to him as he grabbed something behind his back. "They don't pay me enough for this!" Chef yelled, pulling the cord of a hidden parachute and floating down safely.
Jasmine was unaware of the danger and took one more step, expectedly screaming and falling. The camera cut to Chris as he followed the Amazon girl's fall and winced at the sound of an impact. "Awesome!" he cheered. "You’re up, froggy." The scene cut to the start of the bridge where Justin stood. "Then Captain Hood after that."
Justin put on his helmet. "At least my face will be protected from further indignity," he said as he slowly moved towards the bridge. He walked right shoulder into one of the posts holding up the bridge.
Ripper laughed. "Tough break, pretty boy," he jeered. "Go a little to the right." The eye candy followed the advice and walked into the other pole, causing Ripper to laugh. "Sorry man!" the bully called before laughing again.
Chef was shown running past the center of the bridge with an ax raised and ready to strike, while Justin stayed at the bridge completely oblivious. Ripper laughed once more and pushed the model into the cook. "Let me give you a hand," he said as he did so. Chef brought his ax down and hit the hot boy's helmet, causing the eyes to spin comically and Ripper to laugh once more.
Confessional: Justin
“There I was, down dirty, and deafened,” Justin recapped his failure. “And I thought "W.W.A.M.D.": What would Anne Maria do? And then it came to me! She'd use her head.”
Confessional Ends
With a battle cry, Justin rushed the cook with his helmet and ran him over, safely making it to the other side. "Justin's still got it!" Chris said as the camera cut to him. "All right, the final knight attempting to enter Fairy Tale Land is," the shot cut to Ripper as he tied a blindfold over his eyes and faced away from the camera, "Riding Red! We're over this way!"
"My seeing is good," Ripper said as he turned around. The camera cut to his perspective to show that he could actually see Chef putting on a blonde pigtailed wig. "I'm able to see Chef as a female troll! Hilarious!"
"Rapunzel dude, let down your hair!" Chris called, and Chef lengthened one of the pigtails and began swinging it around. He cracked it like a whip at the bully, who dodged it.
The camera cut to Justin watching Ripper avoid every attack. "Hey! He can see!" he cried.
"How?" Chris asked sarcastically. "With his X-ray vision? That'd be cool."
Chef attacked one last time, but Ripper grabbed onto the pigtail and swung across to safety with a whoop.
The footage skipped ahead to a close-up of Chris's book as he began to narrate once again. "And so, the Terrible Toothless Troll knocked off two losers," the shot pulled back to show Jasmine, wearing a leg cast and her right arm in a sling, and MK sitting on the ground nearby. "But," the camera panned over to Justin, Ripper, and Topher on the right, "three semi-brave knights made it to the other side and continued on their noble quest. Whereupon I, in my wisdom, inspired them with a vision of Princess Anne Maria."
The shot pulled back even further, revealing that the group had assembled in front of a small stage with a pink-tinted backdrop depicting a large white castle off in distant hillsides. A slow piano melody began to play as Anne Maria, now dressed in a regal-looking pink gown and tiara, was lowered onto the stage by a few wires.
"When I was a little girl, I'd dream of my first kiss," Anne Maria began to sing in a rather mediocre voice the moment she hit the stage and the wired harness was reeled back up. "It would come from my perfect prince!" A number of tiny birds and chipmunks gathered around her, the birds even landing on her hands. "And in my dream, it went like this!"
The scene immediately cut to the three remaining knights as they watched the performance. Justin and Topher were both stunned by her display, while Ripper couldn't care less.
“She's the most beautiful thing I have ever seen,” Justin said.
Definitely,” Topher chimed in.
“I must've been so busy seeing her as a potential alliance member and extra vote that I didn't see her outer beauty. Wow,” Justin continued in amazement. “We'll be the best looking couple in the kingdom!”
The music came to a halt as Topher and Ripper were surprised by what just came out of Justin's mouth.
“Excuse me, but I am still dating her!” Topher objected heavily.
“And there's no way she'll ever be into you,” Ripper told Justin.
“I saw you cheat, Ripper,” Justin let him know. “You don't deserve to be anybody's prince.”
“And who died and made you the rule master?” Ripper faced the handsome boy threateningly.
"Guys, guys!" Chris said, stepping forward and getting between the boys. "No need to fight! At least not until after this break," he declared happily. "Will Ripper inflict any deformities on Justin? Or will Justin's ripped physique bring two tons of hurt down on Topher's head? Find out when we come back!"
(Commercial Break)
The footage came back to a distance shot of the stage Anne Maria was still singing on, her music resuming as the shot cut closer.
"My prince will be tall and handsome," she sang, the camera panning down to catch Justin standing straight and proud. "My prince will be tough as nails," Ripper flexed his biceps and then lifted a startled Topher over his head.
"My prince will have lots of money," Anne Maria continued, the camera moving back on her as she showered the stage with a wad of cash. "My prince will tame wild whales!" She flexed her own arms, Chris nodded to the beat, and the shot cut to Topher looking at a small and rather disoriented baleen whale on the floor in confusion.
The shot panned down to Jasmine and MK who were watching the performance with boredom on their faces.
"How are you feeling about the whole Fairy Tale thing?" Jasmine asked MK.
"Couldn't care less," MK answered bluntly. "I just don't know why we have to keep watching though."
A close-up was shown of Anne Maria reaching for a wary-eyed frog in a small crown, the Jersey girl pulling it closer to her as she finished her song. "When we kiss~, my prince will be you~!" As the music ended, she held up the frog and kissed it on the lips, but broke almost immediately in a fit of revulsion.
Anne Maria threw the frog away from her, and it landed on Justin's face. "Warts! Get it off!" he cried out as he ran around trying to get the frog out.
"Wasn't that song brilliant?" Chris asked as the focus moved back to him, Jasmine, and MK. "It was so brilliant, I know everyone wishes they could hear it over, and over, and over again! And now they can." He snapped his fingers, and a CD case bearing Princess Anne Maria's picture on the cover was placed in his waiting hand.
"Relive the magic of Anne Maria for only $12.99," he told the camera as a deep and theatrical tune began to play. "Call 555-SELLOUT to get your authentic Princess Anne Maria CD," he added as the camera zoomed in on the case, "before everyone else downloads it illegally!"
"I'll take one!" Topher quickly begged, earning him a CD. "This will be worth spending thirteen dollars of my money."
Confessional: Topher
"My prince will buy me lots of hot dogs! My prince will love ponies too!" Topher was listening to the CD through headphones as his confessional began. "Her singing isn't the best, but I do want to support her," he told the camera.
Confessional Ends
"After risking my life for you, I have come to realize this!" Justin said as he approached the stage. "You're the most beautiful girl I've ever seen. And the smartest. What are the odds?"
He offered his hand to Anne Maria, but she didn't take it. "Thanks for telling me what I already know!"
"Uhh, aren't you going to compliment me on my bravery?" Justin asked.
"Nah! Princesses are supposed to be complimented in my world,” Anne Maria said, to Justin's disappointment. “It's not their job to give them out to anyone, but for me, I'll make an exception for Topher, the handsomest knight around!”
The camera moved to Ripper rolling her eyes and Topher smiling. “And you are the most beautiful princess around!” Topher complimented back before a sound caught the attention of both. They turned their heads at once and the scene followed their gaze over to Chef, still in his troll costume but now riding the same fly-ridden horse from earlier in the episode.
"How has that horse not died yet?" MK commented. "It can't be in good condition after all their time being used on this show."
"Just because it's a little old, doesn't mean it's not fighting for their life," Jasmine told her.
Anne Maria hopped onto the horse's back while Ripper and Topher came over. “Are we supposed to catch him?" Topher asked.
"No, it's a classic princess abduction," Chris explained calmly. "As the villain makes a whirlwind getaway on a swift steed."
Chef kicked the horse with his feet, but it didn't react. "Guess ol' Betsy here didn't read the script," he said gruffly.
"Kick harder," Chris commanded, and Chef promptly complied. A stronger kick caused the horse to kick backwards, hitting Justin – who had been standing closest - right in the face.
"That did it," Chef said as Justin was shown to have a few teeth knocked out and a bruised right eye.
"So, that's how the three knight dudes lost the Princess," Chris narrated, "But fate, aka me, wasn't finished with them." Chef and Anne Maria rode off behind him. "They followed the troll all the way to a fight to the death, because that's how I like my princesses saved."
"Sir Topher!" Anne Maria called out playfully as she was slowly abducted. "You better be the one who rescues me!"
"These two haven't even got a chance!" Topher replied arrogantly.
"As good luck, I'll give you my favor to carry into the battle!" Anne Maria tossed the glass boot, but it unintentionally hit Justin in the face.
Confessional: Justin
Justin was having his bruises covered up by make-up brushes from two unknown people while the glass boot was on the table.
“Falling for Anne Maria has been hard on the face. I think we'll have a no glass shoes policy if we start dating soon,” Justin informed and put the boot away. “I have no idea what Chase and Millie's policies are, but they're probably less dignified.”
Confessional Ends
The footage cut forward to a close-up of the old horse chewing on some hay before the camera panned over to a small castle archway propped up against a tower of some sort. "Sir Justin, Sir Topher, and Sir Ripper reached the ivory tower in which the troll had stuck the super tanned princess," Chris read as the three remaining competitors walked into the scene and he followed on his rolling platform. The shot panned up the towers, where several other pieces of crenelated wall had been attached here and there, and at the very top there was a pinkish spire and balcony where Princess Anne Maria waited.
"But there was only one way to rescue her," the host continued with a grin on his face and tense music building in the background. "One of the brave knights had to slay the dragon!"
"Dragon?!" Jasmine asked in alarm. "Tell me you didn't get a real dragon for this!"
"Seeing as dragons don't exist," MK told her, "I find that highly unlikely."
"She's right," Chris said as the music switched to something more ominously lurking. "We're reusing the alien monster guy."
Seconds later, a few tremendous mechanical footsteps were heard. MK and Jasmine looked to stage right and the camera pulled back, showing off the animatronic monster in all its glory. Chef was wearing the motion capture suit that controlled it, and it had been given a hood with horns, a scraggly 'beard', and two tiny wings in order to make it look more draconic. Chef raised his arms menacingly, and the monster echoed the pose and growled.
"Let the dragon slaying begin!" Chris announced, pulling out a trio of wooden swords and throwing them to the knights. Ripper caught the shortest, Topher the most slender, and Justin the broadest, and the three turned to face the tower and dragon.
"I'm counting on you, Sir Topher!" Anne Maria called from above, smiling at the fanboy and blowing him a kiss. He accepted it with a grin, and Anne Maria turned her attention to the other two knights and frowned. "As for you two, you'll need all the luck you can get."
"Yeah, cause I'll be the one who's going to slay today!" Topher boasted before turning and charging at the dragon.
"Not so fast," Justin charged at Topher and the two clashed their swords into each other's, only breaking when they noticed a foot-shaped shadow fall upon them. They rolled out of the way before the monster stomped them, and the camera panned over to Justin landing next to Ripper.
“You want Topher to win?” Justin faced Ripper.
“Like I care which one of you wins,” Ripper scoffed.
“Then help me take him down and I'll let you win,” Justin offered.
Ripper thought about it, and the viewpoint moved over to Chef guiding the monster in stomping and snapping at Topher. He was able to strike the dragon's head with his sword. “You are not going to stop me from rescuing Anne Maria!” the fanboy told the dragon.
“Just get them both chasing you,” Ripper suggested.
“And why?” Justin asked.
“Do you want to stop that monster or not?” Ripper glared. “Just do it!”
Justin sighed but complied, and both Topher and the Chef-controlled monster made moves to chase after him while Ripper watched from the sidelines.
“Are you going to fight me or run away from me?!” Topher asked with a taunt.
“Justin, you're going to stop running in 3…2…1!” Ripper ordered, and Justin paused his dash.
Topher also stopped chasing him as well, and the dragon, who was still trying to chase the others, caught its foot on Topher and somehow tripped. It flailed its arms humorously before crashing to the ground.
"A job well done," Ripper said as he ran over to the large red button on the side of the beast's neck. “Now to claim my second immunity win in a row!” he said as he readied his sword to finish it off, but Justin came up to push him off the dragon and onto the floor.
"Sorry Ripper," Justin told him. "If Izzy was the prize, I'm sure you'd do the same thing." He plunged his sword into the dragon's neck, causing it to fizzle and short out. "Anne Maria," he dramatically called out, "your prince is coming."
"Some prince," Ripper mocked.
The camera panned to the right to show Chris' moving platform as he arrived with Jasmine and MK in tow.
"Wanna rescue Princess Anne Maria too?" he asked the camera. "Now you can, for only $79.95!" he pulled out a pink-and-yellow striped box and held it up for the camera, a vaguely Anne Maria-shaped doll barely visible inside. "Order your very own Princess Anne Maria Limited Edition Glass Boot Doll! Playing with the Anne Maria doll is more fun and less dangerous than playing with the real Anne Maria. Guaranteed!" He finished with a cheesy grin.
The scene cut to the top of the ivory tower as Justin climbed up to the balcony where Anne Maria waited. "I have arrived!" Justin announced.
"Not the guy I was expecting, but a reward is a reward," Anne Maria grumbled and the two moved in for a kiss.
"Wait, wait, there's no kissing!" Chris interrupted the two from his chair.
“What?” Justin felt confused.
“Oh yeah!” Topher cheered from under the dragon.
"It says here that Prince Justin and Princess Anne Maria must sword fight to determine the true winner!" Chris explained while reading off his book.
"Which means I still have a chance at winning immunity?" Anne Maria asked quickly.
"You're much smarter than most princesses," Chris replied.
"Usually, most fairy tales end with a kiss," Jasmine said.
"Well, this is a modern tale," Chris explained. "Gals have to fight for themselves."
“You can say that again,” MK agreed.
“If that's how it has to be-” Anne Maria said.
“No,” Justin cut her off, now kneeling on one leg. “I am a noble gentleman. A brave knight. A handsome prince. I would never hurt a lady.”
“But you would hurt a guy working with you,” Ripper interjected after getting up on his feet.
“I said I was sorry, Ripper,” Justin told him with annoyance and focused back on Anne Maria. “I refuse to raise a sword to Anne Maria.” Anne Maria took the sword from him. “I give up any chance at immunity to spare her. And now…”
Justin puckered his lips and moved close, only for his eyes to widen. The camera pulled back to show the hilt of the sword buried in his crotch.
“Not sorry! I'm already taken!" Anne Maria declared before pushing Justin off.
Justin fell with a scream until he hit one of the 'towers' on his cheek. He kept on hitting one tower after another until he hit the ground on his back in severe pain. “I'm okay!”
The camera panned over to Chris and the other losers. "Anne Maria wins immunity! Again!" the host announced.
"Yes!" Anne Maria cheered.
The opening sequence of the Gilded Chris Ceremony came and went, leaving the scene focused on the tux-wearing host at his podium. "So," Chris began with an award already in his hand, "with immunity, Anne Maria is the first to win a Gilded Chris." He tossed the statuette to the girl, sitting on the left side of the bleachers, and she caught it with a smug grin.
"Immunity and my own dolls? How much better can this day get?" Anne Maria said.
"Well, it's not like you're getting the profits from the Princess Anne Maria line," Chris said plainly.
Anne Maria's eyes popped open in shock. "Uh, what?!" she said in outrage. “It's my line!”
“I’m saying that you're not going to get the profits because they’ll be sent over to your family for safekeeping, along with a Princess Anne Maria doll,” Chris explained. “I don't want any of my interns or producers to take what's rightfully yours. Lawsuits and all.”
“Oh!” Anne Maria said in relief. “I'm relieved, but I'm also upset that you made me act like an idiot!”
"Then you should have let me finish! Also still in the competish," Chris announced with another two awards in his hand, "MK and Jasmine." The former caught her prize in her lap with a confident grin, and the latter with a happy smile.
"And also Ripper," the host continued, the camera panning to the bully who smiled as he caught his award.
Spotlights were put on Justin and Topher, the former in a body cast. "Who will live happily ever after, and who will die penniless," Chris said as the music built dramatically. "And the last Gilded Chris goes to… Justin!"
"What?!" Anne Maria stood up. "You have to be joking! Justin should be going home!"
"Yeah, you're right. I was just kidding," Chris said. "Justin's actually the one who's been eliminated."
Topher caught his award. “I knew I would be safe.”
Confessional: Topher
“I told everybody to vote off Justin,” Topher confirmed. “He tried to move in on my girlfriend, and him getting booted would serve him right. The best part is, everybody was on board with it and I didn’t even have to try and convince them.”
Confessional Ends
Justin got up and started to head to the red carpet, but stopped to look at the contestants. “So is no one even going to miss me?”
“I never liked you,” MK shrugged.
“See ya,” Ripper said apathetically. “Get better soon, or sometime.”
“Okay, stop already! I'm going! But you'll regret it,” Justin told them and walked to the red carpet. Before getting into the limousine, he gave one last look to the remaining players. “With me gone, this competition just got eighty percent less handsome.” The eye candy turned around, only to hit his head on the roof. “All right, seventy-nine!” he groaned.
The footage paused there, and the camera pulled back to show it on one of the monitors in the control tent. Chris was sitting in his chair playing with a couple of Princess Anne Maria dolls, a few more scattered on the nearby desk.
"I know what I told Anne Maria, but marketing says that our target audience is too old for dolls," Chris told the camera as the footage on the monitor cut to static. "They're just not selling!" He looked to the side, and the camera panned to follow and show Chef playing with a group of Princess Anne Maria dolls dressed up as soldiers.
"Princesses, attack!" he said with a dark grin, lighting a miniature cannon with a match as the deeper and more dramatic ending theme began to play. The cannon fired with a puff, blowing the heads off two of the dolls.
Chris gave him an odd look, then turned back to the camera. "Hey target audience! Make sure you don't miss the next kiss-filled episode of Total! Drama! Action!" As soon as he finished saying the title, he mashed the mouths of the two dolls he was holding together and made kissing sounds. "Now you see, Chef," he told his companion, "that's how you play with dolls."
(Roll the Credits)
(Bonus Clip)
The scene opened to Justin sitting on the back seat of the limousine with the glass boot in hand. “What I've learned? Well, maybe that good looks won't take you everywhere you want to go,” he said wisely. “I mean, what have I ended up with? A wounded face, a bruised ego, and a shoe that I can't even wear. Maybe if I stopped modeling and threw all my energy into getting smarter, more girls could fall in love with me,” he thought. “But modeling pays. And Jesús, my booker, says that even with my severe facial wounds, he can get me a bunch of leg modeling and some celebrity kid's birthday party. So, love schmove.” He threw the glass boot out the window, and a shattering sound indicated that the boot was destroyed.

2024.06.09 03:10 Neat-Midnight1743 Dads, do you care as much about your kids milestones like birthdays as mom may?

This is a question for dads. Because in conversation today my husband told me some things that he declares "all men are like this and is one of the ways men and women think differently"
We have five kids between the two of us. Blended family. Two of the five we have together. A soon to be three year old and an infant. The toddlers birthday is approaching and I asked how he felt about going to my parents at the beach for the weekend and to have a party. We don't see family often since we live few hours away but they will be vacationing at a beach a two hour drive from us. He said he thinks I should just go with the birthday boy and he would stay home with baby.
I asked wouldn't he be bummed to miss his boy on his birthday? He explained, to my surprise, that no. He wouldn't. That first birthdays are important and birthdays where the kids are old enough to know he's there are improtant since it is their memories. Says he couldn't remember the second birthday and that all men are that way. That their brains are not wired to care so much and remember things like birthdays of their children and that I could ask any man if they remember their kids 3rd birthday and they wouldn't be able to. So l ask ok if you don't maintain a memory then what about the moment, life is made of moments and that moment watching your kid feel like the center of universe while having Happy Birthday sung to them is a wonderful moment.
I really really would appreciate other dad's input. My teens dad walked away for good when I had him and now I feel like my second chance at my children having a dad is falling short of my dream... or are my expectations too high? After all I'm not a man and do understand I think differently.
Thank you if you took the time to read this

2024.06.09 02:51 The_Roivler Rant about Homelander and Versus.

Heyyyy so for a LONG long time Homelander has been a very contentious topic in the VS Community and many people have tried opposing the problem and others have tried defending the hate and it’s a large complicated mess and I’m just gonna try to explain what I think of the whole mess as a massive fan of Homelander as a character.
I’m gonna start with covering an argument people love to throw around and just kinda, go from there, so uh, yeah.
  1. “He’s meant to be unlikable”
This is obviously true and there’s nothing wrong with not liking Homelander, the problem is when this purposeful distain towards the character translated to places where it shouldn’t be. Most notably spite, now there’s nothing wrong with enjoying seeing Homelander lose but the fact is most people don’t come into Versus just to see an epic based giga-chad murder on a dumb virgin loser with no effort, spite MU’s are actively is antithetical to the main appeal of Versus Fights and alienate people who actually enjoy the character, and that’s another big problem, I often see people will respond to complaints of Homelander being portrayed as weak and unable to do anything with “You’re meant to hate him! The character is doing his job!” and this feels to me like a way to deflect away from criticism saying that “I’m not disrespecting the character, you are enjoying the character wrong.” when most Homelander fans in Versus Circles hate Homelander as a person but don’t like when he is misrepresented as something he isn’t, which brings me to my second point.
  1. “He’s meant to be a man child that can’t take on people his own size”
This is just untrue and stems from a fundamental misunderstanding of the arguments from the Omni-Man vs Homelander. Homelander very much can fight people his own strength, he holds his own against Soldier Boy and Temp-V Billy Butcher in a 2v1 for a decent amount of time, both of whom should have at least close to as much strength to him, and when Homelander saw he was being matched you wanna know what he did? If your answer is “he crumpled up into a little ball and cried” then you are in fact WRONG, he got angry and became more of a threat because he is actually having to try in a fight. The point of the “Bully vs Warrior” take in the DB wasn’t that “Homelander can’t fight anyone if they have similar strength to him, it’s that Omni-Man was WAY WAY above his level of strength, having more skill is just a cherry on top of the massive amount of win cons Nolan had. And moving away from countering arguments I want to make my next point.
  1. Mischaracterization and Flanderization
When fans of Homelander are upset about Homelander being portrayed as weak or being spited in a versus match the reason isn’t that Homelander should win or that him being a pathetic character are false. It’s because Homelander is supposed to be SCARY, the whole point of Homelander is he’s so much stronger than everyone else in his world that it is TERRIFYING that he’s such a pathetic egotistical manchild, you’re not supposed to look down at Homelander and laugh, you’re supposed to look down at him and shit your fucking pants because he wants to murder you. Fans of Homelander most of the time don’t care if he wins or loses, they want him to be scary, that is the appeal of the character. But it’s hard to get that message across when…
  1. The Boys writers don’t give a shit about power scaling.
It’s easy to forget this when you’re constantly analyzing who is more Outerversal or Multiversal than the other but Homelander, is pretty fucking strong in a vaccum, because he’s meant to be. Yes he is weak in a versus context but that’s because The Boys writers know a more grounded take on superheroes should be more grounded in scale, or not, because they don’t care, I 100% guarantee no one on The Boys staff was going “Oh no this Homelander feat equals too many tons of TNT, better scale that down so he isn’t too strong”. Yes it was funny that a character who is so strong is kind of a wuss compared to other universes but that joke overtook the actual character and people act like he was specifically meant to be a weak and frail little infant.
  1. Okay let’s talk about how Homelander hate actually has merit kinda
Look, I love watching evil villains get their comeuppance as much as the next guy, I actually really love that art of Homelander going “I’M THE FUCKING HOMELANDER” as Superman says “And I’m disappointed” because not only does it actually say something about both characters, but it’s because that piece of art isn’t a VERSUS BATTLE, Versus Battle’s are loved so much because it’s great to see characters from two series fight, but when you take away some of the core traits of Homelander (his fear factor and strength) then it doesn’t feel like a Versus Battle anymore.
  1. Wrapping up my thoughts
This got kinda rambly at moments but eh whatever, I just really wanted to hammer in the points of why people who enjoy Homelander don’t appreciate how the Versus Community portrays him. I really hope people actually read the entire thing before commenting “Erm actually he’s supposed to he unlikable so you’re wrong” but only time can tell, anyway uh I’m gonna go read One Piece instead of dwelling on this topic that gets me really annoyed anymore than I already have, Roiv out.

2024.06.09 02:47 Carnauris Counter Theory: Rambley is not Evil

I want to start this out by saying I am a huge fan of Game Theory, and have been for a long time(there are old photos of a much younger me with MatPat at VidCon 2018). I think what Tom has done with the channel is incredible. That all being said, I take issue with their Indigo Park theory, more specifically their Rambley is Evil theory. I have broken my argument into 10 points:
1. The Rambley AI’s very existence: Why would Indigo create an AI out of Rambley, which functions as the primary mascot of the park, if he was getting replaced by Lloyd? That likely took a lot of effort to do, and doing it with a character you’re phasing out as your leading man would be a poor decision. The rest of this will basically be reinforcing this idea- Lloyd is not replacing Rambley, and it is in fact the other way around- Rambley is replacing Lloyd.
2. The painting in the Railroad: This painting is not depicting a friendship between Rambley and Lloyd. It is a reference to a painting found in The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh in Disneyworld. Why is this significant? The painting depicts a toad and an owl, with the toad handing the deed to the owl. These characters are Mr. Toad and Owl, from Winnie the Pooh. This is a reference to the fact that the Winnie the Pooh ride occupies the building that was previously Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, and the painting is a depiction of Toad handing the deed to the building to Owl. Comparing this painting to the painting we see in Indigo Park, Lloyd is handing the deed to Rambley- this used to be Lloyd’s ride before Rambley took his place. Rambleu replaced Lloyd. This is confirmed later in the game backstage.
3. Backstage items: There are two distinct items backstage that help prove that Rambley replaced Lloyd- a sign for Lloyd’s Limos and a bronze statue of Lloyd. The sign for Lloyd’s Limos would make sense if this was the ride that previously occupied the space that takes up Rambley’s Railway. It would be an easy enough change- swap the limos for a train, add a scene for Lloyd, and you’ve got a new ride. And while this is likely reading too far into it, the queue for the ride and the Hollywood theming surrounding Lloyd is very reminiscent of Superstar Limo, a ride at Disneyland that was a slow moving ride through vignettes that is infamous as the worst ride in Disney’s history. As for the bronze statue of Lloyd, it is backstage, where no guest would see it. This is significant because we’ve seen a similar statuel before- the Rambley statue just outside of Mane Stage. What if this section of the park used to be all for Lloyd, with a Lloyd’s limos ride that would empty out into a plaza with a statue of Lloyd and a stage show featuring Lloyd? I think this is how it used to be laid out, in a similar vein to Jetstream Junction being Mollie’s area.
4. The Throwback Lloyd Plush: It’s true that Rambley reacts by angrily wondering where his throwback is, since only Lloyd got one. However, he says the same of Mollie and Finley. This isn’t Rambley being jealous that Lloyd got picked over him, this is Rambley being upset that Lloyd, whom he dislikes, got special treatment that the others did not. It makes sense that Lloyd got this if you consider the earlier discussion wherein Lloyd was initially more popular before being supplanted by Rambley.
5. Rambley Costume: I think this is indicative of Rambley not being as popular as Lloyd(hence Lloyd being more used when the player was a kid) but eventually surging in popularity. After all, it’s safe to guess that the Rambley AI and critter cuff were fairly modern creations, and both were themed for Rambley. Mollie Macaw’s plushie on the info kiosk mentions, “when they first opened a new Mollie Meet & Greet.” This means that the park didn’t start with things like mascot costumes and meet-and-greets. Which likely means Rambley surged in popularity, and they got the Rambley Costume made just as the old costumes were being phased out. He wasn’t an old character with fading popularity, he was an old character with new found stardom.
6. The Rambley merchandise kiosk descriptions: Several collectibles found in-game are for Rambley. Rambley ears, Rambley cup, Rambleberry, Rambley Action Figure, and a Golden Rambley. Each of these items indicate that Rambley was the main figure of the park.
a. Rambley Ears- These are obviously inspired by Disneyland’s Mickey Ears, a hat styled after Mickey. The info kiosk entry for these mention DVDs for those that booked a reservation- this is also a real thing, Disney does this. The character mentions that his father promised to buy a pair when they went. Why would the character ask to get a pair of Rambley ears if Lloyd was his favorite? It’s because Lloyd didn’t have ears based on him- this merchandise was reserved for Indigo’s main man Rambley.
b. Rambley cup/Rambleberry- Similar idea as before- why would the park dedicate the collectible cup to Rambley if Lloyd was a bigger star? Similarly, Rambley’s response to the cup makes mention of “rambleberry juice” and he is very excited when you show him the Rambleberry collectible. This reminds me of Knott’s Berry Farm’s own Boysenberry(I’ve always wondered if the similarity is intentional). At Knotts Berry Farm, the Boysenberry is a minor icon in and of itself, featuring it’s own merchandise, and a juice served throughout the park. I think that it was similar at Indigo Park- the Rambleberry functioned as a minor icon on its own, and was tied to Rambley. This furthers the idea that Rambley is the main man, and replaced Lloyd.
c. Action Figure: Rambley’s action figure is called out as being new and sold in toy stores. While there’s no hard proof that Lloyd didn’t have his own, we have yet to see any of the sort.
d. Golden Rambley: Same as before- as far as we know, only Rambley got a golden plush a limited edition golden plush. And based on the dialogue in game, it was a highly desired item.
7. Game Theory is wrong about Rambley lying to the player: In the video, the theory suggests that Rambley is lying to the player, using as evidence the fact he says it’s Rambley Tuesday even though it’s a Saturday, the fact he writes off the wreck as renovations, and the fact he knew about the mascots. I think this is a mischaracterization of Rambley’s comments. I will grant that he fabricates that it’s Rambley Tuesday, however that is clearly just him trying to entice us to enter the park. As for the other two examples given, I do not think Rambley is lying to the player. For example, when he writes off the disrepair as renovations, I don’t think he’s lying to the player. He was created by Indigo Park to serve as a guide to the guests, part of which is sending them towards specific experiences ala Genie Plus(you see him do this when he directs you to Rambley’s Railroad, which introduces all the other characters). It would make sense if his programming compels him to spin things in a positive way- so he can’t admit the park is a wreck even if he sees it is, because he’s not programmed that way. As for Rambley knowing about the mascots, I don’t think he did. All Rambley says is that the “Mascots are…” and displays a deeply saddened body language we haven’t seen to that point. I think he’s telling the truth about being confined to the front- he hasn’t seen how the park really is and didn’t realize what the mascots had become. For more evidence, look at the way he reacts to Rooftop Racers being wrecked. He reacts saying that Mollie crashed into the ride and dials the repairman- he’s programmed to react to these things in-character. Mollie the Macaw as a character has a penchant for crashing into things, so it would make sense if Rambley was programmed to explain that she’s crashed into the ride whenever the ride breaks down.
8. Other details: There’s several details throughout the park that indicate Rambley is the leading man and took over Lloyd. The gift shop has Rambley faces on the floor and an entire wall of Rambley merchandise, the ferris wheel has Rambley’s face, the menu boards advertise getting your food “rambley style,” all of the trash cans bear Rambley’s iconography, and the critter cuff bears the same Rambley insignia. Rambley is EVERYWHERE, and as evidenced already, it was Rambley that replaced Lloyd.
9. He Hurts Lloyd: I don’t think the Mollie Macaw animatronic is saying this about Rambley physically harming Lloyd. I think this is the animatronic mimicking something it heard. It starts with Mollie’s catchphrase “Mollie Macaw, bird up!” before saying “Not Rambley, he hurts Lloyd.” I theorize that they gave the animatronic the ability to mimic, and at some point an employee commented that Rambley hurt’s Lloyd’s popularity- after all, the ride this animatronic is stored in used to be Lloyd’s before it was Rambley’s. This would line up with the mimicry we hear come from the living version of Mollie.
  1. Old Character: Just as a side tangent, Rambley and the gang are all very old. I think when Finley mentions that Rambley has known him for 100 years, he’s making reference to the characters appearing in the classic cartoons mentioned in the Retro Lloyd kiosk entry.
Altogether, I thing Game Theory is on the right track with the living mascots(especially Salem’s involvement) and writing off Isaac Indigo, however I do not think that the Rambley is Evil theory is supported by the evidence. Rather, Rambley was a less popular member of the group that experienced a surge in popularity and supplanted Lloyd as the main character of the group. That's why Lloyd's signature item is a throwback, whereas Rambley's signature items are all modern.
TL;DR: The evidence in the game points towards Rambley replacing Lloyd after spending a long time in his shadow.

2024.06.09 02:39 Charity00 The Amazing Race 24 - Review

I’ve decided to rewatch every Amazing Race and rank them all.
*************************************
SEASON 24 (ALL STARS) gets a 6/10
*************************************
This is probably one of the most frustrating seasons! It looked like very little effort was put into the returnee cast, the route, the challenges, leg designs and even editing/storylines were inconsistent. However…it usually wasn’t boring! There was some drama (some of it a bit annoying though), there was the charm of seeing returnees (I do love the appeal of All Star seasons), and a season with Rachel Reilly is never boring! So I find it similar to the Family Edition in that it has lots of flaws but is generally entertaining enough to enjoy. So it gets a 6 because it was still enjoyable (but is obviously ranked near the bottom).

*************************************
Cast Ranking
1.Brendan/Rachel - they carried this season! Rachel started out as not wanting to be her old emotional self and was a lot less whinier than TAR20 (although I preferred her meltdowns honestly haha). She had a “heroic” edit where she prayed rather than getting stressed out - also supported Luke at the cocktails challenge and helped Brendan get through the plate spinning. However they are also responsible for the biggest drama of the season - U-Turning Dave/Connor and the “We hate the Brenchels” storyline. Once again Rachel has most of the cast hating her…and I love it! Rachel then reverted back to her old crying self in the last 3 legs with meltdowns at the bulls, crying at the Wellington toss and picking fights in the finale. So still crazy, still got her sequins, fell over a few times haha, bizarre lines (saying “I want to win to get a baby” over and over haha) and provided the drama and laughs that this season needed.
  1. Dave/Connor - the rivals of the Brenchels and made the next biggest impact! They seemed very sweet and relatable like at the disco “We’re just 2 Mormon boys from Salt Lake City” haha and I liked their sweet bond with Caroline/Jennifer where they let them step on the mat in front of them. But they also feel annoying and entitled. Dave mentioned his achilles A LOT, Dave complained about his age A LOT ("Yeah outrunning an old man", “U-Turning a 60 year old man” and “This is a young person’s game”), complained about Brenchels A LOT and they seemed very self righteous over the U-Turn. Their involvement in the Accidental Alliance came across as childish rather than noble, “That snotty woman! She’s scary looking!” So I'm not sure if they were meant to be likeable or not - they sort of sucked a lot of the fun out of the season honestly. But a decent redemption for them and they made a decent impact and got us talking.
  2. Leo/Jamal - still fun and likeable with some sneaky moments but more toned down than last time. A few cheeky moments like “We love you Connor, we love you Connor” when he finished the sewing (hoping for help), but then “I’m kidding, I don’t” after they left. Strategic again like when they wanted to lie to Jet/Cord at one stage but didn’t because they wanted to avoid the U-Turn this time. Made the smart decision rather than the emotional one when U-Turning the threats Jet/Cord. Unfortunately finished in 4th place again.
  3. Jet/Cord - the cowboys are “back in the saddle”! Another likeable team but I found Leo/Jamal more interesting. They were “threats” again, “We’re like butter, we’re on a roll” when coming in 1st haha and also worked alone again “We’re used to being the lone rangers”. I sort of liked how they didn’t join in on the Brenchel drama. Still find them a bit overrated but I know a lot of viewers enjoyed seeing them again.
  4. Caroline/Jennifer - were the sweethearts and underdogs who weren’t great racers but slid by each week (and saved by 2 non-eliminations). I thought they were likeable enough, “Who would u-turn Dave/Connor, they’re the sweetest guys…and have great hair” haha Were proud of their flirting again and used it to get an Express Pass off Jet/Cord…and were helped multiple times by Leo/Jamal and Dave/Connor. You don’t need to be a strong “girl power” team…the underdogs who get through by flirting are just as interesting haha But weren’t that great TV honestly….like last time.
  5. Mark/Mallory - a fascinating dynamic even though most fans didn’t like this hybrid. In a way it did damage the reputation of 2 fan favorites (Mark/Bopper and Gary/Mallory) because they were very negative to one another (Mark refusing to race without the backpack despite having everything he needed, and Mallory seemed uncaring and not taking responsibility) but I enjoyed their drama. I liked how Mallory joked about losing their passport on leg 1…and the foreshadowing. I prefer their messy dynamic rather than them just being nice and boring for 2 legs.
  6. Natalie/Nadiya - screamed at eachother through the whole 1st episode and I loved every minute they were on screen “It’s in Asian, I can’t read it!” haha They were such a hot mess in their 1 episode and possibly my favourite first boots! This season would have been so much better if we saw them involved in the Brenchel drama later, and I would have loved to see some more crazy moments and seeing them get to visit Sri Lanka.
  7. Margie/Luke - the last 4 didn’t really contribute much this season. These 2 are ahead because I always enjoy watching their dynamic with their sweet bond and occasional bickering (nothing bad, just normal healthy struggles). Luke’s sexuality was finally brought up (a nice scene where Luke explains his coming out to Margie) and I liked Margie saying that when Luke pulls her this time, he has to be gentler because she’s older haha Felt very likeable this time, like when they were reflecting on the train ride in Sri Lanka.
  8. Flight Time/Big Easy - they were fine but didn’t do much this season. They had a nice moment dancing with the locals in Borneo, joking about the Beekmans winning with roller bags, and talking to their wooden donkey when they couldn’t work out what they did wrong. So ultimately a few more fun moments than the 2 ranked below them. Didn’t feel like they wanted to be there as much as previous seasons.
  9. John/Jessica - didn’t do much this time. They were at the centre of lots of storylines in TAR22 but I think that was just “lucky circumstances” rather than them being big characters. They were just a generic nice couple here. It was nice though seeing Joey/Meghan and John/Jessica helping each other again like last time (and Brendan/Rachel having a random final 3 alliance with them haha). Their only moment here was them working with other teams thinking Caroline/Jennifer were behind them, and losing a footrace.
  10. Joey/Meghan - Also didn’t do much and the only difference is John/Jessica made it further. Joey just played up to the cameras like last time (screeching “White is not my color” at the wedding dresses) but they were still likeable enough. Their only storyline was Meaghan helping John despite the 2 of them being in last place. So not the smartest move but nice that they still have that friendship.

Leg Rankings
1.Leg 8 - Italy (F6 - Flight Time/Big Easy eliminated) - the most entertaining episode of the season! So much drama going on between all teams and great scenery. Brendan/Rachel U-Turning Dave/Connor…with Dave’s irrational hatred for the rest of the leg plus Brendan/Rachel disagreeing over who to U-Turn. Then Dave/Connor helping Leo/Jamal (despite U-Turning them too and calling it a “blessed u-turn” haha). Decent challenges - racing donkeys (teams falling off especially Rachel, and the donkey struggling with Big Easy haha), building a wooden donkey (teams not using the box as part of it, many switches) and writing the Ancient manuscript (dull but some teams still struggled and was made better with Dave not accepting an apology and later mocking Brendan/Rachel). Rachel was hilarious “They can’t get me in a place of worship” haha Also had Dave/Connor and Caroline/Jennifer working together (with Dave/Connor accidentally losing them just like Bates/Anthony did) and just a good mix of fun and drama! Not for everyone, but I liked it.
  1. Leg 4 - Malaysia (F8 - Non elimination) - fantastic, especially the Kuala Lumpur section at the end. The beginning in Kota Kinabalu had the trampoline challenge which had Jessica struggling and injuring her foot and Rachel having to take off her pantyhose because she was slipping haha But Kuala Lumpur had the Petronus Towers and Batu Caves, a night leg plus a fantastic Detour (if you ignore that it was impossible for Luke to do the DJ routine). Pouring the cocktails and the DJ routine had lots of teams struggling with placement shifts from the flights (one of my favorite Detours). Luke has a meltdown and smashes the glasses (Margie yelling like a mother to pick them up haha) and Rachel of all people calms him down. 3 hours later Brendan/Rachel pray and have a very positive edit and music (and don’t accept Margie/Luke’s offer for both to take a penalty) and a great ending between these 2. Loved the music and close up of Rachel’s cross haha Would be the best leg of the season if the whole leg was in Kuala Lumpur.
  2. Leg 2 - China (F10 - Mark/Mallory eliminated) - it looked like a cheap Covid leg but pretty exciting overall. Some great drama with Mallory forgetting Mark’s bag and arguing about going back for it, “People from Kentucky don’t act this way” and Mark being like “I don’t have much and I mean nothing to her”. A trainwreck but can’t stop watching! Jet/Cord walk for a long time and lose their 1st place lead and some okay navigation drama at the start. Building the toy car at “Chuck e Cheese on steroids” was fun - a little girl annoying Flight Time, Meghan helping her ally John (despite being last), and especially Caroline struggling and Jen managing to get the Express Pass off Jet/Cord, “I knew I’d get it off him” hehe. The featherball was also fun with all teams so close together, and Mark/Mallory just not working well together at all. No team chose the massage, and I don’t mind watching teams in pain haha but I prefer skill based challenges so I don’t mind. 7 teams then check in together at the pit stop together. Very fun and fast paced!
  3. Leg 11 - England/Wales (F4 - Leo/Jamal eliminated) - was decent and felt competitive enough but not as top tier as past final 4’s - mediocre tasks for a final 4 elimination and not many storylines but not too dull. Soccer task was ok but nothing special, shooting the clay pigeons/tossing wellingtons was terrible (still felt tense though at the end…and I guess it made Rachel crack), but I really enjoyed remembering the Welsh poem on the aqueduct (good scenery, cultural and challenging). The costumes and castle looked nice - “we’re in Downton Abbey” and Rachel finally has a TAR20 type meltdown when she picks the wrong size shoe and cries like a child (the foreshadowing at the start when Rachel says “I’m proud that I haven’t freaked out yet”). Placement shifts, self driving, Rachel meltdowns are always a positive for me, and actually had a strange positive edit where the final 4 were getting along. So still enjoyable overall and a sad ending for Leo/Jamal. Just needed a few better challenges, especially the Detour at the end.
  4. Leg 7 - Italy (F7 - John/Jessica eliminated) - a good enough leg but would rank higher if it had bigger moments or storylines. It had the Coliseum, many teams together at the final puzzle (Roman Numerals) which is always a plus (Flight Time hilariously having no clue how to do it, Rachel not helping teams, and Leo/Jamal strategically helping last place teams)…and a foot race for last with teams thinking Caroline/Jennifer were behind. However the challenges were embarrassingly bad - remote controlled chariots seemed so silly and out of place (feels very inauthentic to the Ancient Roman theme), the gladiator routine was silly, and counting the Spanish steps wasn’t that hard as long as a local could tell you the Roman Numerals. Finding the site of the “unhappy Roman holiday” had some difficulties, Rachel thinking the “eternal city” is Ethiopia for some reason haha and while the detours were silly, they had some funny struggles with Leo “I watched all 4 seasons of Spartacus”. And of course a very close finish!
  5. Leg 9 - Switzerland (F5 - Non elimination) - challenges were okay and nice Swiss scenery…but very big on the “We hate Brenchels” drama! I don’t mind it but can understand why some may find it annoying this episode. The “Accidental Alliance” is created on the train with teams mocking Rachel’s “I want to race around the world with my best friend” haha. And celebrate getting to clueboxes before Brendan/Rachel, helping one another “their family” and also complaining about them A LOT! Cleaning the room was okay as an attention to detail task and Jet was like “Now my wife knows I can clean”, and Helga “Figure it out!” was a great judge! Working out that the object is a drillbit for a tunnel plus the Mustang Puzzle were nice simple tasks - Rachel thinking it’s a wheel haha and Dave/Connor giving their allies answers. Delivering the milk through the snow at the end was a bit dull besides Brendan writing “TAR24 WINNERS BRENCHEL” on the gondola haha So just an okay leg but depends whether you like the “We hate the Brenchels” storyline.
  6. Leg 6 - Sri Lanka (F7 - Non elimination) - another “okay” leg. Started strong with the tuk tuk Road Block - Rachel was fantastic screaming “GREEN GREEN GREEN” but her colours being wrong (her ally John eventually helps her). Lots of fun chaos with everyone manhandling tuk tuks “I was booty bumping rickshaws out of the way” haha But then there’s a train equaliser and delivering logs with an elephant/make paper from elephant dung was boring (and arguably animal cruelty making the elephant do that). “You’re only as fast as your big fat elephant”. They’re okay cultural tasks but not that difficult or interesting besides a few bubbles when making the paper. Nothing much happens besides some foot races - Jet/Cord vs Leo/Jamal “It’s Indians vs. Cowboys! And the Indians are WINNING!” haha and also Dave whining that John/Jessica outrun him “Yeah beat the old man”. The tuk tuk segment was a highlight of this season and it’s unfortunate that there was an equaliser and that the 2nd half dragged.
  7. Leg 10 - Spain (F5 - Jet/Cord eliminated) - felt like a bit of a cheap and underwhelming final 5 elimination leg with some really silly challenges - shaving a balloon and running with bull costumes. A bit of the Brenchel drama (Dave saying the U-Turn was “kind of inappropriate” when it really wasn’t haha and “Dave/Connor are the sweetest guys on the planet”). Leo/Jamal decide to U-Turn Jet/Cord instead of Brendan/Rachel…but not that interesting “There’s only room for two cowboys on this race and it’s Leo and Jamal! Yeehaw!” Haha Shaving the balloon was terrible, nothing much from the flamenco dance, delivering the hams was a boring and generic Speed Bump, and the bull costumes were silly but at least had some fun moments - Rachel was hilarious as always getting knocked around like crazy saying the bulls were ”bullies”, Dave complaining “I’m an old matador”, Jet/Cord missing parts of the phrase, plus Jamal’s knee injury. It wasn’t necessarily too boring which is why it isn’t ranked lower.
  8. Leg 1 - China (F11 - Natalie/Nadiya eliminated) - was terribly designed! The challenges were finding the Chinese symbols on the band members (very quick and forgettable starting line task), finding wedding dresses (had an okay navigational element and the only decent task), the Canton Tower bubbles (luck based and terrible) and summersaults (terrible, impossible to fail, too tame of a height challenge for All Stars, Caroline “Flight Time looks like a sexy piece of spinning meat”). Natalie/Nadiya were fantastic entertainment and saved this episode from being terrible by yelling “YOU IDIOT” and “I TOLD YOU” over and over (and even argue over who is doing the Road Block). “Those are Chinese flags, not race flags you lunatic!” It also had Bopper’s medevac which was a dramatic start and it’s nice seeing all the returnees bantering with one another (Brenchel army at the airport and Natalie/Nadiya joking about Rachel’s crying). But not much content besides Twinnie craziness, Jet/Cord dominating, and teams struggling to find the wedding dresses.
  9. Leg 12 - USA (F3 - Finale) - for a finale, let alone the All Stars finale, the challenges were too easy - digging for a chest (boring), David Copperfield routine (impossible to fail and only designed to show off David Copperfield), putting lightbulbs in the Mirage sign (not challenging and only designed to show off Las Vegas) and looking for the neon sign in the helicopteskydive (didn’t look that hard to find). Very unsatisfying. But it wasn’t too boring with some minor drama with Brendan/Rachel and Caroline/Jennifer having a fight at customs (not caught on camera so just explained through talking) and there’s some arguing while digging for the chest (throwing sand in each other’s holes). Plus Brendan screaming at a taxi “We’re in a race so we can have a baby” haha plus Brendan/Rachel lost in a hotel that Rachel once worked at. And to be fair, it was very close between Dave/Connor and Caroline/Jennifer - sprinting to the final clue and waiting to see who skydived first. And a night leg in Las Vegas was a great idea…just terribly designed!
  10. Leg 5 - Sri Lanka (F8 - Margie/Luke eliminated) - unfortunately a dull leg because Margie/Luke were an obvious elimination. It did have some great airport scrambles which is always welcome in the modern era (Brendan/Rachel taking a risk on a short connection and Margie/Luke failing to get on standby). Sewing the t-shirt had potential to be a tough interesting challenge…but needed to have all teams together. Several teams struggled, teams worked together (Jessica and Brendan, as well as Connor helping a struggling Jennifer) and Big Easy really struggled “If I have to sew something I’ll just ask my fiancé or my mother…or just buy something new” haha and Flight Time just shows off his basketball skills. The fishing had to be one of the dullest challenges ever and balancing the plates wasn’t much better (although Rachel is the one telling Brendan to calm down here). Printing the t-shirts was also a boring Speed Bump. Margie/Luke are way behind and have a nice scene enjoying the Sri Lankan train ride, but not much excitement.
  11. Leg 3 - Malaysia (F9 - Joey/Meghan eliminated) - was terribly designed - boring challenges (repelling down a waterfall, delivering goods, blowdart) and separating the flights by 3 hours just didn’t make sense as there was little drama for the top 6…and then 3 teams far behind. And flight scrambles are always better than sign-ups. The top 6 just went through three tasks robotically, and even the bottom 3 had little drama or stress. I guess there was a bit of a storyline about the Brenchel army being the bottom 3 and facing the fact one of the friends will go. But Joey/Meghan are obvious boots after struggling to find a taxi. The only interesting parts were the rafts falling apart in the rapids and Rachel repelling in her underwear so her sequins don’t get wet “God forbid she lose some sequins along the way” haha The promos really hyped up the dangerous rapids and they were fine for that short segment but no drama came from them in the episode.

Summary
Not a great season but I feel gets unfair hate (just like the Family Edition which also had bad leg designs, bad route, drama that some found annoying). I don’t think it was terrible as most legs had things happening that made each one interesting enough. Everyone vs Brenchels was similar to Everyone vs Weavers (had some interesting aspects, better than nothing, but was a bit annoying at times). The cast, route and challenges were unsatisfying but entertainment is most important to me and this season was usually not boring. TAR8 and TAR24 had similar weaknesses/frustrations so I’m ranking them together. I enjoyed TAR24 slightly more but I could see TAR24 getting a 5 or less if it wasn’t a returnee season, as it had some similarities to TAR16 (many teams were compelling because of their history rather than things they did on this season).
