That is the reason why his style of movie making was not universally liked, much before Ram Gopal Varma or Sandeep Vanga, he was the true cult director. Or one should say an auteur. His movies had his own distinctive style. good or bad, that was his trademark. And he covered different genres, from artistic( Sitara) to murder mysteries( Anveshana) to comedies( Ladies Tailor, April 1 Vidudala) to family dramas( Preminchu Pelladu). 4 His real name was Nallamilli Bavireddy and Vamsy was his pen name, that he choose for the screen too. It was a remake of the 1981 Tamizh movie Palaivana Solai, and though not a very big success, the movie gained lot of appreciation from the family audiences for it's very sensitive storytelling. The movie also marked Bhanu Priya's debut, as Sitara, a women on the move, who is helped by a kind hearted photographer Devadas( Subhalekha Sudhakar), and helps her to become a movie star later. However when she refuses to go to a particular village for a shooting, Devadas demands an explanation, and she recounts her rather painful past. The movie straddles two different worlds that of the Zamindaris, and their false prestige, that makes them show off as wealthy, when in reality most of them are actually paupers, and that of the movie stars, and paparazzi. There is a lot to write about this movie, but couple of things, it has the very distinctive style of K.Viswanath in many scenes, under whom Vamsy worked as an assistant director. And it began Vamsy's collaboration with Illayaraja, who would go on to compose some memorable songs for his movies later. As also the Godavari backdrop, being a native of that place, not many movie directors captured the region as well as Vamsy did, be it the natural beauty or the dialect or the traditions. It also marked a very visual style of storytelling that would be a feature of most Vamsy movies going ahead. Also the beautiful sunrise and sunset shots, along the Godavari river, contrasting it with the rather claustrophobic atmosphere of the Zamindar Chander( Sarathbabu) mahal. Satyanarayana plays Kurmavataram, a conservative, orthodox Brahmin, who is taught a lesson in humanist values by his grandson Rajendra Prasad, and his estranged grand daughter Bhanupriya. Quite a good movie, had a memorable soundtrack by Illayaraja with songs like "Vayyari Godaramma", "Gopemmma Chethilo", "Nirantharam Vasanthamu", "Nee Chaitra Veena" remaining memorable today. His next movie Aalapana was not that great with a very disjointed narration, and trying to be a cross between an artistic movie and a thriller, fell in between. The story of a tailor Sundaram( Rajendra Prasad) who wants to get rich quick, and follows the advice of an astrologer who predicts that a lady with a mole on her thigh would be fortunate for him. While set in the Godavari region, the narration was totally different, with more risque double meaning dialog, the typical Godavari Yaasa spoken among the working class. And characters like Battala Satyam( Mallikarjuna Rao), Sitaramudu( Subhalekha Sudhakar), the hero's sidekicks, the school teacher Sujatha( Archana), the 3 women Nagamani( Y Vijaya), Neelaveni( Sandhya), Daiya( Deepa) whom the hero chases around, the village head Venkataratnam( Pradeep Sakthi) who hates lovers after a guy duped his sister. The movie was a true cult flick, that polarized audiences, the college students, youth loved it, while the family audiences hated it. But over the years it has become a cult classic of sorts, and once again a memorable score from Illayaraja with a series of superhit songs "Gopilola", "Porabatidi", "Ekkada Ekkada", "Hayamma Hayamma". https://preview.redd.it/3s3ikjq97l0d1.png?width=220&format=png&auto=webp&s=7526167ee734cec685369b01bfe88c686a86f350 His next movie Lawyer Suhasini was a disappointment in many ways, again Maharshi was one of those "You hate it or love it" kind of movies. The story of unrequited one sided love, of the title character who pursues the woman he loves Suchitra( Shantipriya). It was the Arjun Reddy of those times, and most audiences did not like the style of narration or the rather down beat ending, as the movie flopped. The movie was a complete fun ride, with dialogues set in typical Godavari Yaasa, and memorable performances by Naresh, Kota, Mallikarjuna Rao, Ralapalli, Thanikella Bharani, Y.Vijaya. Remake of the Malayalam movie Thanthram, the movie has Rajendraprasad as Balaraju, a down and out lawyer, who gets to fight the case of a rich widow Sujatha( Urvasi), when her father in law Sarabayya( Gollapudi) files a suit claiming the property is his legally. Vamsy wonderfully combines comedy with drama and thriller, creating a really entertaining movie. Somehow it was not much of a success when released, but in later years has become a favorite on video, DVD. His life takes a turn when the woman he loves Bhuvaneshwari( Shobana) puts a condition that he should not tell any lies for one month, and should speak only truth, throwing everything into turmoil. Setting against backdrop of Rajahmundry Railway Quarters, the movie combines comedy and drama effectively, and went on to become one of the biggest hits in his career. And with Joker, he stopped his collaboration with Ilayaraja and composed the music himself, which in a way started his decline. Vamsy's movies were not the same without Illayaraja, and a series of very disappointing movies followed. Even though he did make a comeback in 2002 with Avunu Vallidaru Ishtapaddaru, it was nowhere close to his earlier classics. Apart from being a director, Vamsy is also a great writer, he wrote 5 novels, and around 360 short stories in Telugu. His series of stories Maa Pasarlapudi Kathalu, Maa Diguva Godavari Kathalu are a wonderful depiction of life in rural Godavari districts, on par with RK Narayan's Malgudi Days. Not many explored Godavari districts as intimately as he did covering the world of recording dance troupe artists, railway quarters, villages, creating characters with all the quirks, eccentricities, faults who remain memorable to date. |

2-3 years ago when I finally cracked my egg(stopped being in denial about my transness) The thing that helped me was seeing other trans people, especially ones from India. Nonetheless I still feel very few trans people are visible and accessible for people to look to and see as real people. So here I am! I was introduced to Malayalam cinema only later half of my cinema experiencing journey. And I thought it was just another film industry. I have watched some films already but actually did not get the real taste of Mollywood.
However later in 2019 my uncle who lives in Chennai took his time to make me watch some top tier scrips from Malayalam industry (in his opinion). He sat with me and saw me watch them forcefully. 😅! But I loved it.
I watched Angamaly Dairies and Sundani from Nigeria. I was awestruck by how a variety of scripts can be made with such a simple tone and still able to connect to us emotionally. Sudani from Nigeria opened a new portal in my brain haha. I crave for such films now….
This made me jump into Malayalam films now and then. I don’t say I am a regular watcher of Malayalam film but I don’t miss any chance to experience a film that is being well received by many.
Recently I saw Irata and I was like how do someone even come up with such script! It was wonderful. The twists and turn and for god sake the climax !!!!
I saw Manjummel Boys,permalu, Aavesham and I loved it 🥰!

2024.05.08 06:46 bruise_knuckles Is it my feeling or are malayali movie viewers much better than other south indian viewers ?
Recently I saw a really cringe Telugu masala movie with poor cinematography,cliche plot and terrible theme and I was shocked to know that this movie was a big box office hit. Turns out most Tamil and Telugu movies which are big blockbusters are really terrible and cringe. What I feel is that telegu/Tamil viewers just want to too see their superstars on big screen , they don't care about the plot or quality of the movie. They have a habit of worshipping their superstars which I feel is quite concerning. On the other hand for a Malayalam movie to be a hit it needs to be really good. Irrespective of whether it's a mohanlal or a Mammootty movie if it's shit it's definitely gonna fail miserably in the box office. Also masala action movies don't go well in Malayalam. Manjummel boys is a real good example that you don't have to get big superstars to make a hit in Malayalam, it's quality that matters. Your thoughts??

I am a non Malayalam speaker, and I watched Manjummel Boys in the theatres. I loved it so much I asked my parents to watch it today when it released on Hotstar. Since I believe still few people haven't seen, I've marked it as spoiler.
During the rewatch i realized something. Siju a.k.a. Kuttan's decision to go into the pit even though trained professional refused is nothing short of something out of a movie. It's crazy that the real person decided to do this and actually went down. If this didn't happen in real life, and if this was just a movie not based on anything, we would laugh at the idea of someone untrained going into such a cave just because he is the protagonist of the movie and has a plot armor. It is nothing short of amazing what Kuttan did for his friend.
I am still mind blown that the story is based on real life. Everyone needs a Kuttan in their life. Someone who can pull you out of dark times. Unfortunately, not everyone are so lucky. If you are one of the unlucky few, hope you are your own kuttan and you power through the problems in your life. Cheers.

The results are real as the DOBs and school names are accurate. also they know the second language who all of the ppl who checked.. for example, malayalam, hindi, bengali, french, etc.... It would be impossible for someone to fake all these marks on such a large scale... so my guess is that it is a hacker who has leaked the results earlier... the marks seem to be true (and i feel some of you just be coping saying that these results are fake) anyway i cant say for sure but this is what i feel... another reason is that nerds got good marks... mid tier got mid marks and so on... there cannot be a reason why that could be fake and hence it shold be real... also when the results were up, whenever you tried to take the official website of icse (cisce.org) , it just redirected you the the site where the results came... which is the one with traffic manager (its just a software that allows you to distribute traffic to your public facing applications) and you cant say its fake cuz of that....

Throughout the movie, Ranga speaks broken Malayalam in a Kannada accent. Is that because he was brought up entirely in Karnataka or is it actually because 'Ranga' is an identity adapted by FaFa's character(I don't feel his real name is Ranga. Some say his real name is RANjith GAngadharan) to hide his vulnerability? That's what I felt after watching the movie.

We're dissecting our actors' interviews more... which is all fair game and fun, but I'm just a bit worried that if we as an audience start getting hyper involved and critical of interviews (e.g. the recent Fahadh one with Galatta and Dhyan on VS), then they're all, in time, going to start becoming more careful and curated in what they convey.
Today our actors and stars are frank and keep things real (as far as is possible within a industry such as this... And definitely in comparison to other regions)... I don't want our industry to become like Bollywood where any word spoken to the media is PR vetted and likely fake/feigned, constructed to elicit a certain reaction (vs having any bearing on truth)...
I suppose some of this is inevitable as Malayalam cinema gains more visibility and eyeballs, but our sensibility as the core audience could also have a large impact.... And to be fair, our "sense and sensibility" is quite high! Many if not all discussions I find a balanced POV come through with the conversation, with all sides and nuances considered!! So kudos to us :)

Watched the famous Korean movie 'Memories of Murder' recently and the BGM at the beginning of the movie called 'Faces' (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9HrQkF1KQwk&pp=ygUYbWVtb3JpZXMgb2YgbXVyZGVyIGZhY2Vz) gave me so much of a Deja Vu that I can't stop feeling that I've heard something similar in some Malayalam movie during the 90's when I was a kid.
