2024.05.15 09:59 cmjones0704 Please Help- my friend won't move out of my parents' house, what do I do?

Buckle up because this might be long. My (21F) friend (22F) named G and I have been best friends since freshman year and lived together starting sophomore year, along with our other friends R (21F) and L (21F). We are the all the same age, but G graduated a year earlier than the rest of us. I will try to summarize as best I can (I can give more specifics in the comments) but in the middle of sophomore year G accessed a repressed memory of inappropriate behavior from a family member. This caused her to essentially experience a mental break that manifested in increased outbursts and a slew of destructive decisions, which ultimately resulted in a Bipolar 1 diagnosis.
Throughout junior year the unstable behavior only worsened and it began to affect our relationships. It got to the point that over winter break she decided to move out of our apartment, saying that she was becoming resentful and frustrated with us because she was graduating and at a different stage of life than we were and therefore had decided to remove herself from the situation to salvage our friendships. After moving out, she continued to essentially "live" in our room by lingering around without explicitly meeting up with one of us roomates or leaving her things around the apartment, which made it difficult for us to define the new version of our relationship and set boundaries. We did our best to support her and be understanding through her harsher nature and lack of consideration for others, but R was not as able to see the situation from another perspective. She tended to take G's harsh comments to heart and resentment built throughout the spring semester until the relationship was irreparable, which led to 2 fights between the 4 of us with G blowing up at us.
After G graduated she moved out of state for a job. We hoped that this would naturally settle tensions, but ultimately their relationship wasn't salvageable and it led to the end of L and I's relationship with R as well because we "chose G over her". While G was out of state she spiraled further: she became manic, experienced psychosis, tried to self-admit to the mental hospital, and was fired from her job. After getting fired, she decided to move back to our home state, but because of her extremely strained relationship with her family she asked if she could briefly move into my family's home while I was living at school as a transition while she figured out her next move. This is where the problem arises.
The original plan was that she would stay for around a month or two but she back on her feet by Thanksgiving, however, she is still living there now in May with no plans of leaving anytime soon. No one, including her, realized just how bad her mental state was. As it turns out, most of her personality and habits were defense mechanisms and trauma responses from her childhood, and now that she has lost the ability to "mask" and adapt, it's like she is relearning how to be an aware and active member of society.
She is very easily overstimulated and any slight problem can throw her completely off, sometimes for days at a time. For example, we planned a small trip to visit a friend an hour away for G's birthday. G planned out her outfits with me the night before and then went to the guest room where she has been staying to pack. The next morning when it was right before the time we had decided to leave, I checked on her and asked if she wanted to go load the car, to which she snapped at me, yelled, and proceeded to essentially throw a short tantrum complete with jumping and door slamming. According to my parents this is not an uncommon occurrence- they have heard her throwing things across her room and often experience her outbursts, sometimes becoming the target of them. This has all had a negative effect on our relationship. It has improved over the months, but I have been consistently extremely uncomfortable with her and wanting to distance myself. Firstly, I just don't desire to be around someone who behaves that way. It is constantly like walking on eggshells and it feels like I'm always "on" and working to manage someone else's unpredictable emotions.
Secondly, I have been having a LOT of feelings about her living at my house. This has subsided a lot since the fall, but when she first moved in it was meant to be temporary, and therefore, she stayed in my bedroom. This came to a head when I came home for break to find my room essentially trashed with no effort from her to clean up for me. My room was not in the greatest state when I left it, but I came home to things like the blankets strewn about my bed, her dirty socks buried in my blankets and by my pillows, and half eaten chocolate left on the floor. After this she moved fully to the guest room, which has helped, but she has since started talking about wanting to decorate "her room", which is making me upset because it's not her room to decorate: that would imply that she is a permanent resident rather than a guest.
Thirdly, her behavior towards my family has been frankly unacceptable. Her outbursts have been directed towards both my parents and my special needs sister. None of us are particularly confrontational so it has never been explicitly brought up, but I am extremely offended that she would accept the kindness of my family to house and feed her and to still treat them with such disrespect. She also does not make an effort to be a good houseguest in other regards: only does she not do anything to help with the chores of the household, but she actively adds to the mess (doesn't do her dishes, leaves her packages on the kitchen table, etc). I know that much of this is due to her degraded mental state, but it truly feels like she is a leech. I hate feeling this way.
I believe that she is completely unaware of how any of this comes off to others based on conversations she's had with both me, L, and my mom. She continues to hold grudges and negative feelings about things from months/years ago towards L & I. For example, when she used to live with us, L and I would frequently find food to be missing that we had bought, sometimes containers completely eaten and left empty on the shelf. When we expressed frustration that G would take food without asking and then wait to be caught rather than asking beforehand or notifying us after, she told us that she essentially felt entitled to our food because we could afford to buy food and she couldn't. This is a consistent theme where L and I would have been more than willing to help out if she had asked, but we were upset under a matter of principle because it's still our stuff! I am definitely not completely blameless, but I wouldn't say that I have done nearly as much to harm our relationship. G has an inability to see any other perspective than her own, and she has yet to understand that she is not the only one who has felt hurt in our friendship.
My parents have been at a loss for how to handle the situation. They don't want to throw her out to the wolves (none of her other family is an option), but at the same time, it is almost a year since she moved in, which is 10x longer than they were anticipating. Additionally, her therapist has been telling her that she is not ready to move out on her own and is not ready to work a "big girl job", so she has been working at Starbucks since around October and is likely not financially stable enough to live on her own. There is the potential of finding roomates to live with (she has tried a couple but they have all fallen through), but another issue is I'm not sure if she has been saving her money. She frequently makes purchases on amazon, gets take out food (after my parents buy groceries specifically for her), got a $200 tattoo, and discussed buying $250 concert tickets at the table with my family.
My mom has been especially unsure of how to approach her in a way that won't "set her off", so she recently asked G if she could contact her therapist to ask some questions about how to discuss the future of the living situation, but it is unclear how that will play out (a conversation with the 3 of them, my mom communicating with the therapist, etc).
What do I do in this situation? I do have love for her, but truthfully, it's been diminishing throughout this situation and I want her out of my space as soon as possible. Maybe it's selfish, but I can't fully relax when I'm at home when she's there and I feel guilty for introducing my family to this predicament. I would be a bad friend if I threw her out, but just because she has it worse does that negate my feelings? I feel bad because her family situation is very toxic and she is clearly unpacking her childhood and grieving her lack of parental support, but it feels like it is manifesting in jealousy with my situation and resulting in her feeling entitled to my family, home, and life. It truly feels like she is taking advantage of my family but I also know she really doesn't have another option. At what point does it stop being "their problem"? Please Help! AITA?

2024.05.15 09:55 Star07jewel Late night musings

I can barely write much out- so saddened by the plethora of despair shared on here. Almost left the group but alas, I am also a single momma, regr…well, I was regretful n resentful. I’ve shifted harboring those feelings to some renewed enlightenment and approach.
I’ve had this primal thought that may or may not resonate w ppl right now, or this audience. But undergoing the strife of raising a kid alone, after escaping a monster n subsequently being dragged through court over my son (me in attempts to protect him), followed by finding post after post mirroring my struggles n thoughts on Reddit n other platforms, I can’t help but ponder if we as a collective should take a pause on bringing new little humans into the world. I can’t even imagine a world our teens (and younger ones too) will have to live in in just a few years. We’re already strapped over covid, hurting as adults in waves across the country, has anyone else considered it? Perhaps pursue attempts to address this widespread calamity before adding more to the mix? More kiddos who’ll grow up impacted by their upbringing n circumstances surrounding it? More adults broken and lost, hating themselves? I think I once thought this way, in deciding I didn’t want children, but then I had my own under false pretenses, despite taking responsibility, it still broke me and now I wonder if a new approach can be taken or added, or perhaps some measure in place or more outreach shared from parents to those yearning or potentially becoming, offering better insight as to potential consequences to self, marriage, identity, etc? Anyway. Late night pondering. Nervous to write this b/c Reddit can draw out the worst in ppl sometimes, but in reading multiple versions of regretful parents on here, I’m curious if anyone shares similar questioning. I would love to help someone avoid calamity if at all possible, in a gentle, informational maybe illustrative way. I dunno. To any regretful parents, do you think any efforts to gently dissuade or more openly share a rougher, more drained experience in parenting have made a difference in your choice?

2024.05.15 09:54 EnergyTrend Global Trends Analysis of Residential Energy Storage Industry Based on the Development of Overseas Companies and U.S. Market Sees Swifter Rebound in Demand Compared to Europe

With the rapid development of residential energy storage in Europe, it has emerged as a key player in the realm of energy transformation. On one hand, the imperative of transitioning to renewable energy sources is undeniable. On the other hand, certain regions grapple with weak grid infrastructure, intensifying the demand for localized residential storage solutions. As the industry matures, accompanied by declining raw material costs, the prices of residential storage systems are starting to decline. Simultaneously, the burgeoning demand for Energy Storage Systems (ESS) suggests ample room for further market penetration.
Moreover, residential energy storage products primarily cater to consumers (To C), necessitating a competitive edge in product quality, brand recognition, and distribution channels to ensure sustained profitability.
In 2022, the energy storage industry witnessed a meteoric rise, evolving from its nascent stages. By 2023, however, demand tapered off amidst shifting policies and inventory dynamics. Now, in 2024, the trajectory of the residential energy storage sector is poised to be influenced by a multitude of factors, including sustained policy support, product innovation, channel optimization, dwindling inventory levels, and declining interest rates. The forthcoming discussion will delve into the anticipated future of the industry, drawing insights from the experiences of international energy storage enterprises.
SolarEdge:
SolarEdge dominates the European market, offering cost-effective products that pose a challenge for our enterprises to match. Renowned as a top player in solar and storage inverters across Europe and the United States, SolarEdge boasts a market share that reigns supreme in both regions.
Established in Delaware in 2006, SolarEdge experienced rapid growth through strategic collaborations, notably with Tesla SolarCity from 2013 to 2015, culminating in its NASDAQ listing in 2015. The 2017 mandate by the United States NEC requiring solar PV systems to integrate Module Level Power Electronics (MLPE) with rapid shutdown functionality played to SolarEdge's strengths, enabling the company to swiftly expand its market share.
According to data from Wood Mackenzie, SolarEdge secured the 7th position in global inverter shipments in 2022, firmly establishing its dominance in European and American markets.
SolarEdge's product portfolio encompasses a diverse range of offerings, including solar and storage inverters, energy storage systems, uninterruptible power supplies, electric vehicle charging stations, and integrated solar and energy storage solutions. These solutions cater to various sectors, spanning from residential and commercial to utility-scale ground-mounted power installations.
In 2023, SolarEdge introduced the SolarEdge One software, marking a significant expansion into the realm of virtual power plants. Through sophisticated algorithms, this software facilitates new energy power trading, empowering customers with advanced solar and energy storage solutions. By bridging the gap between software and hardware, SolarEdge continues to bolster its product ecosystem, solidifying its position as a leading provider of comprehensive new energy solutions.
With a strong focus on customer collaboration, technological mastery, and leveraging the benefits of U.S. trade policies, SolarEdge has consistently excelled.
The first phase, starting in 2013, saw SolarEdge achieve rapid revenue growth through strategic partnerships, notably with Tesla SolarCity. During this period, the company experienced a remarkable compound annual growth rate of 83.7% from 2013 to 2016.
In 2017, the introduction of stringent safety regulations by the U.S. NEC mandated the use of Module Level Power Electronics (MLPE) with rapid shutdown capabilities in PV systems, rendering traditional string inverters obsolete for residential energy storage solutions. SolarEdge, with its mastery of the requisite technology, swiftly capitalized on this shift, rapidly expanding its market share and witnessing substantial revenue growth in 2018 and 2019.
The third phase unfolded in 2018 with the imposition of 10% tariffs on Chinese PV inverters under U.S. trade policies. SolarEdge benefited from these trade barriers. Subsequently, in May 2019, tariffs were increased to 25%, prompting Huawei's withdrawal from the U.S. inverter market. Despite the overall growth of the new energy industry, SolarEdge experienced a revenue decline in 2023, attributed to the industry-wide destocking process.
Reports indicate that market demand in Europe and the U.S. was disrupted by high interest rates and policy uncertainties. In 2023, SolarEdge's revenue from its inverter, optimizer, and backup battery businesses reached $1.37 billion, $900 million, and $380 million respectively. This represented a 20.8% increase, a 20.5% decline, and an 11.8% decrease from the previous year. Furthermore, sales figures stood at 1.013 million sets, 17.4 million sets, and 744 MWh, marking declines of 0.8%, 26.6%, and 2.2% respectively compared to the previous year. The unit prices were recorded at USD 1,356 per set, USD 52 per set, and USD 0.51 per kWh respectively.
The substantial decline in optimizer sales can be attributed to the superiority of micro-inverter solutions over optimizer and string solutions in meeting the stringent MLPE requirements set forth by the NEC for rapid shutdown functionality.
In 2023, the company's photovoltaic business revenue in the European and U.S. markets amounted to $1.81 billion and $760 million, respectively. This represented a 15.8% increase in Europe but a significant 35.9% decline in the U.S. compared to the previous year. While the beginning of 2023 saw some relief in the industrial chain situation, the European market initially experienced rapid growth despite a slowdown. However, the latter half of the year was marred by high interest rates and policy uncertainties in countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, and Italy, resulting in a substantial contraction in market demand. Although the company's revenue from the European market maintained modest growth, the growth rate declined by 55% compared to the previous month. Similar trends were observed in the U.S. market, exacerbated by the transition of California's NEM 2.0 policy to 3.0, which created a vacuum in the demand for distributed PV storage.
In 2023, the European and American market demand was significantly affected by uncertain policies, with expectations for gradual recovery in 2024. Throughout the year, power optimizer shipments fluctuated, reaching 6.4 million, 5.5 million, 3.3 million, and 2.2 million sets from Q1 to Q4 respectively. Inverter shipments followed a similar pattern, with 330000, 335000, 274000 and 74000 units shipped during the same period. Energy storage battery pack shipments also varied, with 221 MWh, 269 MWh, 121 MWh, and 133 MWh recorded from Q1 to Q4 respectively. However, in the latter half of 2023, impacted by lower demand and high inventory, SolarEdge's shipments experienced a sharp decline compared to the previous month.
Looking ahead to 2024, several developments are anticipated in the following regions:
  1. Germany: Expectations are that certain tariff caps will be lifted in 2024, resulting in higher electricity prices in the country. Consequently, the return on investment (ROI) for photovoltaic (PV) installations is projected to increase, fueling continued growth in residential PV installations.
  2. Austria: It is anticipated that the value-added tax (VAT) on PV power generation, introduced at the beginning of 2024, will be repealed.
  3. Netherlands: The uncertainty stemming from the 2023 election and the changing net metering policy led to a sharp decline in PV installations in Q4. Recent decisions by the Dutch Senate indicate a potential sustainability of net metering, prompting optimistic market responses in the future.
Enphase:
Anticipated shifts in demand are on the horizon as the second quarter of 2024 draws to a close.
Enphase stands as the undisputed global leader in microinverters, spearheading advancements in solar, energy storage, and charging solutions. Founded in 2006 in Delaware, Enphase revolutionized the market by introducing the world's first microinverter, the M175. In 2011, Enphase embarked on a global expansion strategy, penetrating the MLPE market in Europe, Australia, and other regions, culminating in its listing on the NASDAQ in 2012.
Leveraging its pioneering status in the MLPE sector, Enphase has continually enhanced its microinverter products, elevating power output from 175W in the first generation to 550W in the eighth generation. The latest iteration of inverters boasts additional features such as split-phase grid connection and off-grid capability. As a result, Enphase commands a market share exceeding 70%, firmly establishing itself as the industry leader.
Building on its expertise in microinverter technology, Enphase embarked on a series of strategic mergers and acquisitions, consolidating businesses in energy storage, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and cloud services to develop comprehensive solar and storage solutions for households.
In 2016, Enphase introduced its inaugural residential storage product, marking its entry into the energy storage sector. By the close of 2020, the company unveiled the IQ Battery residential storage system, expanding its product portfolio to encompass residential energy storage solutions. Enphase IQ Batteries operate on low-voltage DC power, mitigating the risks associated with high-voltage DC power and enhancing system safety and efficiency.
In 2021, Enphase ventured into the electric vehicle charging infrastructure market with the acquisition of ClipperCreek. The following year, the acquisition of GreenCom positioned Enphase as a leading provider of home solar, energy storage, and charging system solutions, bolstering its offering with Internet of Things (IoT) solutions.
Thanks to favorable policies, expanded channels, and enhanced product competitiveness, Enphase has experienced rapid revenue growth since 2019.
On one hand, Enphase has reaped the benefits of supportive policies such as the NEC 2017 mandate requiring residential PV systems to integrate Module Level Power Electronics (MLPE), driving demand for the company's microinverters. Additionally, the 301 tariff prompted Huawei's exit from the U.S. inverter market in 2019. Furthermore, the IRC's gradual reduction of the Investment Tax Credit (ITC) subsidy from 2019 onward stimulated PV market growth. The introduction of the IRA in 2022, alongside the extension of the Advanced Manufacturing Production Tax Credit (AMPTC) and Advanced Energy Project Investment Tax Credit (AEPITC) subsidies, has had a significant impact. These subsidies, extended to 2032 and 2030 respectively, have bolstered Enphase's microinverter production.
In terms of channel expansion, Enphase's acquisition of SunPower's subsidiary in 2018 solidified its position as the exclusive supplier. Moreover, strategic partnerships with Sunrun, LG, Panasonic, Solaria, and GRID Alternatives have further expanded its reach and market presence.
Regarding product development, Enphase has concentrated on promoting its IQ 7 and IQ 8 series microinverters since 2019. With conversion efficiencies of up to 97.5%, these inverters cater to a broader range of solar panel installations. Additionally, the higher power range of Enphase's inverters ensures compatibility with solar panels in various regions, while the company's commitment to efficient after-sales service has reduced average waiting times to less than one minute.
By the latter half of 2023, Enphase faced increased pressure in both the US and European markets due to weakened demand for energy storage and high inventory levels.
In the US market, the transition to NEM 3.0 and elevated interest rates dampened investor confidence in residential solar storage investments. As per the company's investor communications, revenue from the US market dropped by 16% and 35% in the third and fourth quarters of 2023 respectively, compared to the previous quarters. Notably, the California market experienced a sharper decline, with Enphase's microinverter sales falling by 25% and 27% in Q3 and Q4 respectively, while non-California markets remained relatively stable.
In Europe, the anticipated demand recovery in the latter half of 2023 fell short of expectations, exacerbating distributor inventory backlogs. Enphase's top three European markets—Netherlands, France, and Germany—faced distinct challenges. The Netherlands saw hesitancy among users awaiting the removal of the net metering program, while seasonality impacted the French market, and the German market grappled with feed-in tariff reductions. Consequently, market demand and shipments related to residential PV in major European countries all experienced declines.
According to Enphase's investor communication disclosures, microinverter shipments in 2023 were as follows: 4.8 million units in Q1, 5.2 million units in Q2, 3.9 million units in Q3, and 1.6 million units in Q4. Additionally, battery shipments totaled 102.0 MWh, 82.3 MWh, 86.0 MWh, and 80.7 MWh from Q1 to Q4 in 2023 respectively. However, in the latter half of 2023, microinverter shipments experienced a sharp decline due to weak demand and inventory accumulation. Enphase estimates that channel inventory will normalize by the end of Q2 in 2024, with shipments expected to increase again in Q3. Conversely, battery sales, buoyed by NEM 3.0, continue to rise.
Currently, the European market shows signs of recovery, while the California market is anticipated to gradually improve. The Dutch parliament recently confirmed that net metering policy will remain unchanged in the short term, and electricity costs have increased in France and Germany. Consequently, it is expected that the company's business will reach its nadir in the first quarter of 2024. In the United States, non-California markets are poised for swift recovery after interest rate fluctuations. However, the California market's recovery may take several quarters due to the transition from NEM 2.0 to NEM 3.0. Nevertheless, given the high electricity costs, the integration of solar and energy storage offers a higher return on investment under NEM 3.0, leading to a gradual recovery in market demand.

2024.05.15 09:46 creeprincee SOLUTION for Google Nest Protect can't connect to xfinity 2.5G wifi

Hey! I have been through it for the last couple of weeks trying to figure this out like many others. I reached out to xfinity tech support multiple times on all ends and was always given incorrect information. They couldn't seem to understand that the bands need to be on their own individual isolated channels, not supported up thru 2.4-6 G. On their end, they're not seeing that the bands are not individual like we see it in our Xfinity app. I think some of the confusion is that on the consumer side we don't know that band steering is being used, and we would like to have control over our own functionality rather than xfinity automating everything so we cannot change our settings. Or the devices should just be compatible. There is *no longer* a separate "NETWORK NAME - 2.4G / NETWORK NAME - 5G" different login setting. It's all the same network name and password you setup. Anyway, most of the advice I have seen in all the forums asking the same question was also not helpful to solve the issue. But! I figured out how to fix this finally and everything is up and running. I also had trouble during my initial gateway setup after starting service where the app was not working at all and the connection setup always failed. It was ultimately because the error notification kept saying "must use WPA3 password." I told the customer service specialist multiple times but they were going to send someone out because it wasn't working. The problem was that the security mode for the password type was not set correctly in the settings. I had to select WPA3 Personal Only, then I could proceed to change my password and continue with the setup to finally allow me to login and connect to the internet service/network and not just the router. If you're having issues during setup with your new service where your gateway modem is working and connected but you can't connect to the internet -- go into your app settings and make sure that the security mode you selected for login to your network is the one your device requires you to use (WPA2 or WPA3). I think this is because my devices are newer 2019+ apple and require the newer protocols. I'm going to try to make a video to explain it at some point to show. The problem with the smart devices that require the 2.4G band is a similar issue. (The problem isn't unique to Google Nest devices. It can be any 2.4G WPA2 device, like a Dyson smart device, a Ring door cam, Smart TV, etc). There are a few different steps you have to take:

  1. go to your xfinity app and do the following: wifi > wifi details > edit wifi settings > security mode: WPA3 - Personal Transition (NOT PERSONAL ONLY). This is necessary because the older smart devices that require the 2.4G IPv6 protocol will also require a WPA2 security protocol and cannot "see" or find WPA3 networks. When you select transition mode you allow the network and device to automatically communicate with one another based on which one they use, either WPA2 or WPA3. If it is set to WPA3 Only, then the WPA2 devices will not connect, and if set to WPA2 only, the WPA3 devices will not connect. Note that there is a toggle function that says "split bands" -- THIS DOES NOT WORK. It will automatically undo itself no matter how many times you toggle it on and select save. Don't worry about it.
  2. login to a web browser and type in 10.0.0.1 (from your home network. not remotely)
  3. under username and password type: username:admin / password: password. This is universal at first. Next you will change your password to whatever you want it to be. The username will always remain "admin." Note: the login is NOT your xfinity login info or your network login info.
  4. Select: connection > wifi . You will now see a page with the individual bands: 2.4G, 5G, and 6G. Select "edit" next to the 5G band and toggle "disable" > save settings. Do the same to disable the 6G band.
  5. Next go to: connection > status. You will notice that your 2.4 G band is now the only one "active" and the other two are disabled. You will also see that your security mode was changed to "WPA3 Personal transition" mode. You will notice an indicator count for what devices are connected to what band.
  6. Select the "firewall" dropdown from the lefthand menu. Select "IPv4" and change this security setting to "minimum security low." Save settings. Now select "IPv6" and change this setting to "custom." Make sure that no additional "Block _" boxes are checked. Save settings.

Now you should be able to find your network on your device and connect the device to wifi to finish your setup process! For me, I had to reset the Google Nest Smoke Detector following the reset settings. I also uninstalled the Google Nest app. I turned my phone off and back on. I reinstalled the Nest app. I did not have to uninstall and reinstall the Dyson app. My iPhone and Macbook automatically still joined the network no problem because the login info is the same due to the band steering. I just got a notification on my Macbook saying that the WPA3 protocol was changed and said ok. For my Dyson hot and cool air filter I was able to pair the device and the network finally showed up. I followed the settings in the app and now that the network knows the "MAC address of the device" it is stored in the network's memory and they can find and communicate with each other now. Same with the Google Nest. If it doesn't work right away just try another time and it should work.

Important: the reason they automatically merge the bands and steer them is because the 2.4G is more unstable. This is true. You might notice that the connectivity will drop out occasionally for the devices which could explain why it might take another try to finish your setup. Don't worry about it. It will reconnect on it's own.

Now that your smart devices are connected and setup is finished, and your network knows their MAC addresses, you can revert all the changes you made to your network settings to go back to full functionality (2.4G-6 and increase your firewall security standards back up to your desired level. You just follow the reverse order of what you just did. Keep the 2.4G as is of course, but select: "5G > edit" and toggle enable on. Do the same for 6G. Now all your bands are turned back on and you have full access again. Go back to "firewall" and change the IPV4 and IPV6 settings. You will see on the top menu bar in the right that your security is back to "medium."

Go back to "connection > status." You will notice that all your bands are now active. You can see the device count for how many devices are connected and to which band they are connected. This may drop in and out so don't worry if you don't see the correct total. Sometimes the nest will drop out but it will reconnect itself on it's own in a few minutes. You can verify this on your phone by: Going to the Nest app and seeing that your "Protect" or whatever device you setup is good. You can go to the Dyson app and see that it is connected and get your status updates. You can also go to the xfinity app and see what devices are connected to your network as you usually would. Again, this might drop in and out with the Google nest. But! all your settings are restored and all your devices are now fully functioning and connected to your network :) You also might get notifications from xfinity on your iPhone once the devices are finally successfully paired to your network. Cool!

Important note: you can also use the 10.0.0.1 admin tool to manually add a device's MAC address if, for some reason, you still can't get things to work. I thankfully didn't have to do this because I figured out the solution, but it was going to be my next attempt. Thankfully, the Dyson has the MAC address for the device printed on the inside of the device. However, Google Nest unfortunately does not do this and you have to already be connected in to the app to view the system info. However, you could do a workaround for that by taking your device someplace else and using their wifi (as long as it is 2.4 WPA2 IPV6) to connect and setup the device in the app in order to find the MAC address for the device in the settings in the Nest app. Then you can take the device back home to your network, reset, and try to manually add the MAC address now that you found it (hopefully you took a screenshot or something :) ) Thankfully I didn't have to do this either, but it also would have been my next attempt.

Also, make sure you keep your password settings that you changed in your xfinity app to WPA3 Transition Mode. It'll stay that way for both 2.4G and 5G. This is important because the devices still need to be able to communicate and can only use WPA2. Also if in the future you have this problem again with another product, like perhaps an older Smart TV, you will already have the WPA2 functionality enabled.

I hope this was helpful! It's 3am but I'm so glad I eventually figured it out on my own!

2024.05.15 09:44 creeprincee SOLUTION for smart devices can't connect to xfinity (2.4G band) Google Nest, Dyson, Ring, SmartTV, Printers, etc.

2024.05.15 09:41 No_Smell_8882 I'm 21 and my girlfriend tested positive yesterday. What do I need to do/know?

Obviously this wasn't planned and we're not at all ready for this. I've told a close friend of mine and planning on telling my brother soon to prepare for telling my parents. Our situation isn't terrible, we both have the most supportive families and friends which I couldn't be more grateful for, we've been together since we were 17 so our communication and team work is excellent, and we both work stable jobs. My trouble is that there's a lot I don't know and a lot of things that need to change that I don't know how to do. We both live at home, and it's important for me that we both live in the same house when we have our child however neither of us have much independent life experience, so as you can imagine it's stressful. Despite this I feel weirdly quite positive and am going through waves of excitement and stress.
If anyone has any advice for becoming a parent at this age I'd appreciate it if you shared. Thanks.

2024.05.15 09:40 plundis suggestions for DDS module

Hi everyone, I'm new to signal processing and currently, I'm exploring how to generate a triangular wave with alternating slopes, along with the ability to adjust its frequency and period. I've been looking into DDS module chips that might handle this, and the closest match so far is the AD9833, although it doesn't support custom waveform generation directly. I'm hoping to avoid using a combination of a microcontroller and DAC unless absolutely necessary. Does anyone know if it’s possible to modify the AD9833 to meet my needs, or can someone recommend another DDS module that would be suitable? Thanks

2024.05.15 09:34 SevethAgeSage-8423 [Waybound]The world of Cradle going forward.

with the monarchs gone and the eight man empire becoming a mini abidan like organization to guard against the return of the monarchs, The world will be shared among the strongest heralds and sages.
sages will be so important because they can make void keys, gatekeys, facilitate spatial travel and world wide communication, Heal on a level of authority.
Powerful factions headed by heralds will enter alliances with factions that have sages while trying to cultivate their own sages.
thanks to Lindon's two years on cradle, There was peace and the major powers entered some kind of stability without major conflicts so as to not risk his wrath.
the new sages and heralds will get a visit from the eightman empire to extract an oath to ascend in case of advancement to monarch. they will be able to pull support from the other heralds and sages in case of resistance. obviously not everyone will be doing it out of the desire to preserve cradle but out of their own interests to preserve their own power so that they don't lose it to the tyranny of a monarch.
many factions will bloom but the ones with a sage or herald already will be ahead. The Arelius family, the Akura clan, the nine cloud court and the twin star sect will be the leading factions of the world.
the eightman empire will be taking on disciples but not territories so as to ensure there is always someone who will take on the mantle when one of their own wants to ascend or dies.
I think the uncrowned king tornament will continue under the eightman empire for this purpose with the major factions sending their best disciples to compete on a world stage. having a member of your clan be part of the only monarch power allowed in cradle would be the highest honor and a sign of might.
the top 8 will be considered candidates and the winner will most definitely be assured a spot as long as they are willing to take an oath to uphold the eightman empire mission and not conquer territory or get too involved in the affairs of sage and herald factions.

2024.05.15 09:33 lordbunet Is doing reviews worthy?

Typically, most of the activities of a PhD student are useful for your carreer in some sense, being them doing TA activities or carrying out research which eventually results in papers to publish. In these cases, for example, you both get something appealing to write on your CV and you learn new stuff and how to communicate it to a specific audience.
But what about doing reviews? Since they are anonimous, they cannot be claimed as additional work done, right? Do you feel that doing them has helped you on your journey, perhaps giving you new skills?
I am asking this because some professors asked if I could help doing some reviews for a conference they are organizing, and I would like to, but I understand that doing this appropriately requires considerable amounts of time, attention, and energy.
I'm a PhD student in Western Europe, if that matters. My field is is Stats/math/CS. English is not my first language, so corrections and advices on my writing are more than welcome.

2024.05.15 09:32 Mirrorslash Let's discuss what caused the OpenAI employee resignations! (with sources) And what this means for the future of AI

We're starting to see a wave of resignation from OpenAI, with one of the most important people in AI, Ilya Sutskever, leaving the company. Many people from the alignment / safety team are quitting: https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-leadership-shakeup-jan-leike-ilya-sutskever-resign-chatgpt-superalignment-2024-5 https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-safety-researchers-quit-superalignment-sam-altman-chatgpt-2024-5
So what is causing this? There's been a lot of discussion since the CEO ouster debacle happened.
Was it OpenAI opening their tech up for the military to develope AI killing machines? https://theintercept.com/2024/01/12/open-ai-military-ban-chatgpt/
Was it because Microsoft and OpenAI are lobbying to regulate open source under the umbrella of safety? https://www.itprotoday.com/linux/microsoft-lobbies-governments-reject-open-source-software https://www.politico.com/news/2024/05/12/ai-lobbyists-gain-upper-hand-washington-00157437
Was it them proposing to track GPUs to control users AI inference and hardware externally via license revoking? https://youtu.be/lQNEnVVv4OE?si=fvxnpm0--FiP3JXE&t=482 https://openai.com/index/reimagining-secure-infrastructure-for-advanced-ai/
Was it them shifting their focus to develope AI that can simulate emotions to potentially exploit lonely people with AI girlfriends increasing GPTs ability to deveice and OpenAI planning to open up nsfw content? https://www.businessinsider.com/sex-workers-embrace-artificial-intelligence-openai-new-chatbot-gpt4o-2024-5 https://hypebeast.com/2024/5/openai-considers-allowing-ai-generated-nsfw-adult-content-info
I personally think it was all the above and had nothing to do with "AGI achieved internally". I believe they used this narrative to hype up AI/ themselves and create fear to create momentum for regulatory capture. What Microsoft and OpenAI are trying will actively harm everyone to benefit from AGI in the future in my opinion.
What do you think? Can OpenAI still be trusted?

2024.05.15 09:31 Pale-West-3176 How to convince my mom to buy me a PC?

My laptop's motherboard died and replacing it would probably cost a lot. So, no choice, we have to buy a new one. I am an IT student and most of our courses are online class, and don't have to bring a laptop, so a PC would be ideal for me. Not only that its miles cheaper than a laptop, but it is also way faster, cooler, and does not need to be charged like a laptop. I prefer a PC because I used my old laptop like a PC.
The problem is that I told my mom that the PC I wanna buy has fast performance, great for productivity, and is fine for light gaming. And when she heard 'gaming' she kinda frowned and ask that I should not buy a PC for gaming and should only be for online class. She said that a laptop will be better because it is portable, but I am afraid that she might buy an overpriced $350 Intel Pentium/Celeron-tier laptop on a mall instead because that's what she's been looking for rn.
Here is the build that I wanna buy. It's no high end but it should be fine for my use case(Genshin, Wuthering Waves, Roblox, Farlight, Minecraft) and I can put a gpu when we can afford it:
$350 Brand New
MOTHERBOARD: ASUS TUF Gaming B450M PRO II CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G CPU POWER SUPPLY: MSI MAG A550BN CASE: INPLAY Meteor 03 PC Case Mesh 4x Fans SSD: Lexar NM610 Pro 1TB RAM: Team Elite Plus 2x8GB 3200mHz
My grades are fine and I am studious. My phone is also a gaming phone, so I don't think my gaming hobby will affect my studies. How should I tell her?

2024.05.15 09:29 caonguyen9x It a terrible idea to recommend mod pack to people who are new to Skyrim modding. Especially people who just recently played Skyrim. I don’t understand why people keep recommending them.

You should NEVER start out modding with mod pack for the same reason you NOBODY start a woodworking class by buying a COMPLETE wood furniture set. Start small, play the game. See what you don't like and wished to change. That way you understand the mechanism of its working, you see the quirks of vanilla game and hopefully at least a partial understanding of the mechanism that it operate on. Only then, when you understand what you desire you start to Download and follow the installation manual of that mod.
I don't eat pizza by stuffing the entire pizza in to my mouth at the same time, I have to cut it down to size, then I took a bite each time. It get easier that way, with each bite you learn about the taste and texture of the pizza. Sometimes the pizza have the kind of cheese that I do not like or burned bread so I spit it out. Not all bite is the same because pizza can be diverse even within a single pizza. People like to say eating or modding like it is a single step but it is actually not. If just a simplified figure of speech so we easily communicate on a surface level with over complicating something. Eating is not just eating, it actually desiring, finding, seeing, preparing, buying, paying, receiving, checking,....
With each mod that you install you learn something about your taste, your computer (because not all mods are made equal, some are more demanding than other: graphic mod,VFX and script heavy mod are frame killers), you learn about the game version that you have installed. Not all skyrim version are equal ( LE,SE,AE, Steam, GOG). Same goes for mod managers programs too (NMM, Vortex, MO2; honestly the only way to prevent permanently breaking your own game is to use virtual folder, that why Mo2 is superior, cause if you fail, it won’t be a reinstall, even then it might not be a surefire with some animation mod). Some mod are dependant on other mods. Some mod are outdated or outright broken because update by the game so you have to degrade your game version, sometimes the author break their own mod with their update, sometime the mod you want depend on other mod to work but that mod update so something is not working anymore for you, sometime Bethesda update their game, the list go on,...
And here is the lesson for people who are new to modding. You have to organize and approach information with care. You must think strategically before you do, like what does the mod I wanted to have is depend on. Don’t jump in blindly, expect all these complex mechanism to work perfectly. It will not. Keep a modding diary. Test your mod out individually then install new mod when you know it working and not incompatible, interact properly with the game & other mod. Always keep back up save and backup config files.
Modding is not playing vanilla game. You are not playing Skyrim. You are playing GOD. To these however miniscule and dumb NPCs in your game. You are their gods, their creator, their life giver. You are a Magna Ge who gave them life by sacrificing your time & energy.

Sportsbooks Ready For More WNBA Betting Growth As 2024 Season Opens
This spring, the Caitlin Clark effect helped grow women’s college basketball betting markets immensely.
The carryover continued to last month’s WNBA Draft, as sportsbooks reported that betting was up significantly for the event.
WNBA
Now, as Clark and the Indiana Fever open play Tuesday against the Connecticut Sun as part of a much-anticipated season debut for the league, sportsbooks are offering additional WNBA odds with more markets on the way.

WNBA betting was already gaining steam

According to DraftKings last week, the 2023 WNBA season had three-and-a-half times more bets and more than double the handle than the previous year. This considerable growth was aided by DraftKings offering nearly four times more betting markets.
Additionally, the 2023 WNBA Finals had 8.4 times more bets and 2.4 times more handle than the 2022 championship.
The league has been playing in Las Vegas since 2018, and the two-time defending champion Aces have been carrying the WNBA torch.
“The Aces were probably the most bet on team in the WNBA when we look back at the handles,” said DraftKings Director of Race and Sports Operations Johnny Avello last week. “Now, will the Fever take that over? There’s a good chance.”
2024 WNBA

Fever pacing the market

This scenario is already a reality, as the Fever account for nearly three times more championship futures tickets than the Aces, per BetMGM last week. Indiana’s betting surge coincided with making Caitlin Clark the first overall pick.
Tuesday’s game is also the first home opener sellout for the Connecticut Sun since 2003.

Sportsbook growing WNBA betting markets for 2024

2024 futures are up 78% by tickets and 145% by handle year-over-year, BetMGM shared last week.
DraftKings “expects probably another 50% growth this year” for the season, Avello said. That includes in-play betting, which saw a large increase in handle last season.
“One thing that was more popular in betting last year than the previous year — and it was astounding to me how much money it grew — was the live wagering. I think people want to be engaged in the game, watch it and bet, because live last year broke as much money or even more money as pregame betting. I look for that to also be very popular again this year.” JOHNNY AVELLO, DRAFTKINGS DIRECTOR OF RACE AND SPORTS OPERATIONS

2024 WNBA championship odds and betting trends

Nearly half the tickets are on the Fever to win the championship despite a 13-27 record last year before drafting Clark.
It’s not just BetMGM experiencing a wave of Fever title tickets. Per Fanatics Sportsbook this week, 48.8% of tickets and 43.1% of handle are on Indiana to win the championship.
Although the Fever are dominating the amount of futures tickets, the Aces are drawing 41.3% of BetMGM championship handle, easily leading the league.

Clark also dominating WNBA MVP handle

Clark is drawing about 68% of tickets and 74% of handle to win MVP this year, per BetMGM. She is by far the book’s biggest liability with odds dropping to +1000 at the site. Only Wilson (+110) and New York’s Breanna Stewart (+600) had shorter WNBA MVP odds on Monday.
Not every bettor is buying the Clark hype. Per Fanatics this week, Indiana to finish with under 21.5 wins has drawn the most handle of any WNBA future.
The Fever pace the league in under tickets and handle for the book’s WNBA regular season win totals.

Nikola, the only student at his school: “I mind the goats and play chess”. Travel notes from Kosovo and Metohija.
Nikola Stankovic
“Have a good trip! Will you be so kind to bring me a chess set the next time you come? A deal?” This is what Nikola Stankovic told us when we parted the last time as we were leaving Slivova near Pristina. This is the place we return to once the opportunity presents itself.
It’s true that we come here often—to the suburb of the once glorious city of Pristina, once the intellectual, industrial, and cultural center of our Kosovo… People used to come here from everywhere, as the city attracted professors, engineers, writers, and artists. Before, Pristina was known for its flourishing cultural life, just as today it’s buzzing with commercial and shopping activity—full of intrusive and aggressive advertising by foreign companies, probably the only ones who benefit from the war. “Nuk ka me Pristine” (Albanian)—“Pristina is no more!” was the title of a novel published on the twentieth anniversary of the “March pogrom“ of Serbs. Serbs remember how yesterday’s neighbors, colleagues, and friends chased them out of their then Serbian city.
Things are no better in the suburbs of Pristina; they are completely cut off from the city. The nearby villages are dying out, standing isolated from the outside world and kept away from the blessings of civilization. Many Serbs were forced to leave or flee their homes. Many of them have died. Many of their houses were burned down… The tiny village of Slivova is a place where you can still hear people speak Serbian.
A Serbian school for a single student
“It used to be so wonderful here before the war! People worked in factories and in agriculture. Our village was bustling with life and there were a lot of children. I had more than twenty students in my class, and we are talking about a village school! But these days, after the war… Consider it a desert; everyone has moved or fled away,” Nikola's father tells us. He speaks of Serbs when he says “everyone,” as with every passing day, more and more Albanians settle into Slivova. For a long time now, the village is more than half Albanian. They come from the city in search of a quiet life and clean air, and they firmly settle here. I asked if there were any clashes. No, he replies, not yet, but who knows.
Basically, why would they want clashes when Serbs are already on the move, leaving their homeland behind. “Soon we will be left all alone. Our children have no future here. My older sons, for example, have long been living and working elsewhere.”
Nikola, the third son and the only school student in Slivova, is in seventh grade. We ask our old friend how he is doing.
“I mind the goats and play chess. Sometimes I look after Dragan, my younger brother (there are four brothers in his family), but he doesn't always listen to me!”
A young shepherd. A kind one
We are walking with our seventh-grader to his school, now located in a house left behind by a Serb. Since 1999, Serbian children never returned to their classes in their old school. It is the result of the “optimization of Serbian education,” the Kosovar way. We “snatched” Nikola for a short while—pulling him away from his herd. His youngest brother Dragan worthily replaced his brother in the line of shepherd duty. We sat down with him on a bench nearby to play a game of chess, Nikola’s favorite pastime. He admitted, embarrassed, that he sometimes played chess with his teacher at his “new” school, as well. But once he entered high school grades, he played against the computer, his main rival. It is not much of a conversation partner, but at least it offers an interesting game of chess.
We met Nikola for the first time three years ago. He won’t make friends with you lightly, or for no reason at all; it took him a while to grow accustomed to us. Village folk are like that. But once they get to know you, you can’t find a better friend. It was the same this time. When he saw us, he didn't say much, but his eyes shone with such joy that no words were necessary. And he is always trying to give us gifts.
“I recently went to a soccer game in Gracanica; my dad took me there. It was really great! Teachers come to the village every day, well, to teach me. So, I'm learning. What else can I do?”
Nikola
Nikola is one of our “trailblazers”. He took part in the summer school camp organized last year for Serbian children from Kosovo and Metohija by our charity organization called “Kosovo Pomoravlje.” Everything went well, but, as we have noticed, these children couldn’t get enough of playing soccer with their peers from other ghettos. For them, soccer is an important thing, a way to interact, no matter how you cut it. We asked him if he’s going to attend our summer school this year.
“I sure will! Only if you have more soccer time!”
We finish the chess game and say our goodbyes. We leave Nikola with his herd, kings and queens, and a chessboard under his armpit. We already know what we’ll bring him when, God willing, we come here next time: soccer cleats and a football. We wave and honk… and hope that we will be able to bring together the boys and girls from the enclaves of Kosovo and Metohija in our summer school. And yes, they’ll have more soccer time there—we’ve learned our lesson well.

2024.05.15 09:27 Faux-Cookies Was I never actually evicted?

This is kind of a weird situation so I apologize for the length. A few years ago I was put in a terrible spot financially. I won’t go into the story because it doesn’t matter. I fucked up and I own what I did. Not proud of it at all and I still feel terrible about it to this day.
I couldn’t make payments in this apartment complex anymore. In January 2022 there was an eviction warning on my door. I knew I needed to leave where I was at so I moved in with a friend a few hours away. I never dodged them. I was in active communication the whole time trying to work out a way to pay off what I owed. After a month they stopped responding. I sent another email and got nothing back. I called, no one answered, and their voicemail box was full. I decided to wait. Around April they sent me another email stating that if I didn’t pay in full they would follow through with an eviction. I explained that I not only moved out, but I’m trying to pay back what I owed and I was already working it out. I got nothing back.
They sent an email in May, but I never opened it because it was under a different name (they were now under new management and I’m just now finding this out. Massive complex owned by a big corporation) and probably thought it was spam. I don’t remember. I had their original email address flagged for importance. My lease was up in June and they sent me another email that I again didn’t open for the same reason about move out. They then sent an email in September with the total I owed from November 21 to May 22 that I also didn’t open, and in January of 2023 I received a call from a collection agency in regards to these missed payments. I was ready to pay assuming there was a court case I had just missed for not being there. I would’ve shown up, but I never received any documentation for it. They had all my new contact info, address, etc. I was amazed from how much it was because I was expecting at most 4 months rent, not 7.
Flash forward to now and I’m applying for apartments. I’m honest and tell them I’ve been evicted as well as why and what I’ve done to right my wrongs. They want me to apply anyway because I make 6x’s the rent and when I’m denied it’s because of my credit. They run an eviction check and there’s nothing there. No court records, judgments, anything. Just this collection account that’s considered credit. Again I apply and the same thing happens at a different place. I decide to screen myself and sure enough there’s no eviction. I check for my name in every court within that county, then my state, nationally. I pull my housing records. Run a background check and it’s all saying I’ve never been evicted nor are there any mentions of me in civil court.
Did they not follow through, considered everything to be missed payments post move out, and sent it off to a debt collection agency? The agency is legit so I’m not worried there. I was never provided any court notice other than that warning either and the emails I didn’t see. Puts me in weird spot because I want to be honest when applying but once this collection is paid they’re removing it from my report so I don’t know what to say anymore. If there’s no record what am I supposed to do? I feel like I’m missing something or I’ve been lying to myself.

2024.05.15 09:22 Joe2_0 The Nature of Grunts - 2

Memory Transcription Subject: Alus, Yotul auxiliary to the UN Spaceborne Infantry
Date [standardized human time]: March 3rd 2137, 1000 hours ship-time
After Gutierrez showed me to our compartment, and I dropped off my duffelbags, he began leading me to the Armory, where I would be assigned my rifle and 'sensitive items' as he put it. As we walked, my mind churned with more questions.
"Hey, uh, Guts. Back in the supply compartment, you mentioned the 'USMC'? That's the American Marines right? I thought you were UN Spaceborne infantry."
"Yeah, so, I am a Marine. Marine to the core. But Earth sorta got thrown into this whole clusterfuck without having a properly unified military, and instead of trying to set up a whole new service from scratch, they got the big five on the Security Council, being us, the Brits, the French, the Chinese, and the Russkis, to pitch in units. So you got Marines and Army making up the American portion of the SI, and Navy and Airforce making up our part of the fleet. Same for every country that pitched in, even some outside the UNSC." Gutierrez explained, his hands moving about animatedly. "Right now it's a hot mess because none of the standards, paperwork, or anything changed, but I guess they'll probably formalize and standardize the SI and Fleet after all this shit is done. All we currently got that's the same is rifles, uniforms, and equipment. The traditions and paperwork and shit are all wildly different from one countries units to another, and sometimes even within the same country's units because of different branches. The US Marines and US Army for instance, we share a lot of the same shit you know, but our low-level paperwork is branch-specific, and our organization is different."
I thought for a moment about what he was saying as we walked though the passageways, pondering on the idea of what a truly united Human military could accomplish, if everything Humanity had done so far was with a truly thrown-together force. As I looked up again, I saw we were approaching the armory, and mentally filed my next question away for later. We crossed through the threshold, and I found myself standing in front of a grated window, another Human on the other side.
"Sarn't Johnson, I'd like you to meet our new Yotul auxiliary, Alus. We're doing inprocessing, and need to get his weapon and equipment drawn and assigned."
The new Human looked down at me curiously and smiled, before reaching down and grabbing a few sheets of paper from under his desk.
"Alright" the Sergeant said, before moving deeper into the armory, stopping at a weapons cage, before unlocking it and inspecting the rifles line up inside "So, what are we billeting him as?"
"Just an 0311, needs a rifleman's kit and associated gear" Guts replied, leaning forward to watch the Sergeant.
"Gotcha. Just gimme a minute here."
Guts and I watched as the Armorer pulled a cart over, and picked out a rifle, laying it down on the cart, and locking the cage, before moving to the next rack and removing a small black bag, repeating the process along the line of cages across one wall of the armory, before coming back to the front, and pressing a button on his desk. I heard a click from a door next to the grated portal, and Gutierrez waved for me to follow him through the door, and into the armory.
The Sergeant had sat back down, and was poring over what appeared to be a checklist as he inspected each piece of equipment, ticking them off down the list one by one. When he was done, he clipped it to a clipboard, and handed it off to Gutierrez, before looking toward me.
"So, Heard you fellas went through some sorta training dirtside, so you should be familiar with at least the rifle?" He asked, picking up a notably shorter version of the standard UN rifle I had qualified on Earth with.
"Yes, ours were longer, it kinda seemed like they weren't really meant for non-Humans to use. We could all barely aim them shooting, uh, offhand I think it was?"
"Yeah, sounds about right for an indoc unit. The M-36 is a piston gun so it's good bit heavier out front than the old M-16's the Corps used to issue way back, Mag in the back kinda balances the whole shebang on the carbine variants" he slapped the side of the firearm he was holding "But on the full length rifles they're just ungodly long barrels. Ay, Guts, something like a 28-inch heavy barrel on the old M-36A1's?"
"Yeah, something stupid like that," Guts said, looking up from the paperwork he had been signing, as he set it down on the table. "Marines wanted a gun that was the same length or shorter than an M-16, Piston, and could reach out to like 800 meters with 5.56. I think Bushmaster pulled out some old relic from the 20th century and just modernized it? I remember the K&M lawsuit right when we started getting the A1's back in 2130, but yeah."
The sergeant nodded and turned back to me, pointing at the firearm again "So, when the Corps finally removed their head from their fifth point of contact-"
"Their ass" Gutierrez helpfully interjected, grinning
"Yes, But anyways, They saw some issues with going back to a full size rifle, and got carbines made to replace the A1's for combat arms. Shorter barrel, shorter gas system, shorter receiver, way lighter out front. Super nice shooting guns to boot. Bushmaster also sold them on this neat quick-change barrel system they thought up too, so now we have a bunch of smoothbore barrels for flechettes, rifled barrels for traditional ammunition, pencil barrels for riflemen, heavy barrels with bipods for autoriflemen, in a bunch of different lengths. These fuckers are modular as hell."
The sergeant had what was probably the widest grin I'd ever seen on a Human as he finished talking, and it very nearly took me aback, despite the Yotul, myself included, not having the same issues with Human mannerisms as the wider Federation.
"I-I'm not gonna have to carry all of those, right?" I asked, hesitantly, and Gutierrez broke out laughing, while the sergeant suppressed a chuckle.
"Nah kid, we just pick a rifle and swap the barrel to the one you need for what you're doing. Mostly just makes shit easier on my end really. You're just getting a carbine-length pencil barrel, lightest of the bunch."
The Sergeant shifted, bringing the rifle to his shoulder, and pointed it at a canted barrel, sticking the muzzle in, and pulled back the charging handle, sticking a finger into the rifle's ejection port, before looking in, and releasing the charging handle, before pulling the trigger with a 'click'. He then held out the rifle for me, and I took it, surprised at how much lighter it was than the one I had been issued in training.
"So, one M-36A2." the Sergeant said, before pulling a metal cylinder from a small pouch, and peering through it up at one of the lights, before getting up and grabbing a metal rod, and walking over to me. He stood alongside me, and slipped the cylinder over the muzzle of the rifle, before inserting the rod down the barrel, and peering closely at a small gap around the rod.
"And one suppressor. Clears the rod check so that shouldn't give you any issues. Guts should be able to explain the adjustable piston to you so you don't get gassed in the face while you're using it." With a quick twist of a collar on the back of the tube, the armorer pulled the device off the muzzle and stuck it back in it's pouch, and picked up a larger cloth case. He pulled something that looked like a visor on an articulating arm from it, and inserted a pair of batteries into a cylinder that ran along the top.
"This here is the AN/PVS-101 'Fused vision system'. Little heads up display that links up with the rest of your fireteam, and also has thermal and Infrared overlay. Just a fuckin' neat piece of kit honestly. Datalink is hardened to all hell, and the whole system's idiot-proof. I've seen ones that pre-date the Satellite Wars. Uses an accelerometer and gyro system to keep track of where you are in the area, and can pulse lidar to give you visuals in full pitch-black. You can also mark obstacles, enemy troops, vics, whatever with eye-clicks, and the system keeps track and spreads that out to all the linked systems. Plus there's a version that goes to the fireteam leader, which transmits all that collated data back to company level, and gives them an up-to-date picture of everything that's going on. Just honestly fuckin' cool."
He then held up a square plate on the back of the arm to his forehead, and withdrew a small box from the back and touched it to the back of his head.
"The FVS mounts to the socket on the front of your helmet, and the Processing unit just mounts to the rear, acts like a counterweight too which keeps your neck from hurting nearly as much while you're using it."
Placing both items back in the cloth bag, He finally held up what was obviously a handheld radio, and a set of earmuffs.
"This is the AN/PRC-255. It's a radio, and might as well work with Angry Pixies. I know it's got a 60 mile range, and hops frequencies, and the Comms nerds have some kind of black magic ritual to make them work. The hearing protection doesn't have some letter-and-number name, but they hook up to the radio, and they'll also link up to other headsets nearby like the FVS to communicate without radio. The Radio isn't nearly as impressive as the FVS, and the hearing protection hasn't changed in a meaningful way in about a hundred years. 3M is the Browning of comms gear, I swear. And, that's petty much it."
I looked at the neat pile of equipment sitting next to the carbine, and looked down at my hands, realizing I had nothing to carry any of it with, before looking up at Gutierrez.
"Is it alright if you carry some of this, I don't think I can carry it a-" I said, before I was cut off by laughter from Sgt Johnson.
"Nooooooo, no kid." The sergeant said, wiping tears from his eyes. "This all stays here unless you actually imminently need it. It's assigned to you now, but it stays under lock and key." he explained, while Gutierrez seemed to look simultaneously aghast and about to burst into laughter. My abbreviated training had failed to explain a few things, it seemed, as I had simply assumed that they had locked up our equipment because we were were trainees.
"See, everything in here is either VERY killy, or VERY expensive. And Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines around Earth all have a penchant for shenanigans, and breaking anything they touch. Occasionally themselves too, if left entirely unsupervised with dangerous objects. So we don't let any of you have things which can be described as 'Killy', 'Expensive', or 'Killy and Expensive' unless it's specifically pertaining to the task at hand, Rah?"
"I, uh, see yeah. Rah?" I replied, somewhat dejectedly, and slightly confused.
"Rah." The Sergeant said in reply, and began to load all of the 'Killy and expensive' equipment back onto the metal cart, chuckling to himself still, as Gutierrez tapped me on the shoulder.
"Hey, chow's in about an hour, let's get you back to the barracks so you can get your OCUU's on, and outta those class-B's right?"
"Yeah, that sounds good, I don't think I've eaten since before I arrived at the Orbital, I'm starving" I said, as I followed the Spaceborne Infantry Marine out of the Armory's door, and back down the passageway to the berthing areas of Grunt Country.
