2024.05.16 05:45 PyroIsSpai Peer-reviewed research paper on potentially found Dyson spheres has been accepted to the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, one of the oldest scientific journals on Earth.

Prior submission on topic 5 days ago:
"Mysterious Objects in Space Could Be Giant Dyson Spheres, Scientists Say"
Paper:
"Project Hephaistos - II. Dyson sphere candidates from Gaia DR3, 2MASS, and WISE"; authors: Matías Suazo, Erik Zackrisson, Priyatam K. Mahto, Fabian Lundell, Carl Nettelblad, Andreas J. Korn, Jason T. Wright, Suman Majumdar
The search for extraterrestrial intelligence is currently being pursued using multiple techniques and in different wavelength bands. Dyson spheres, megastructures that could be constructed by advanced civilizations to harness the radiation energy of their host stars, represent a potential technosignature, that in principle may be hiding in public data already collected as part of large astronomical surveys. In this study, we present a comprehensive search for partial Dyson spheres by analyzing optical and infrared observations from Gaia, 2MASS, and WISE. We develop a pipeline that employs multiple filters to identify potential candidates and reject interlopers in a sample of five million objects, which incorporates a convolutional neural network to help identify confusion in WISE data. Finally, the pipeline identifies 7 candidates deserving of further analysis. All of these objects are M-dwarfs, for which astrophysical phenomena cannot easily account for the observed infrared excess emission.
The Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society:
Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS) is a peer-reviewed scientific journal covering research in astronomy and astrophysics. It has been in continuous existence since 1827 and publishes letters and papers reporting original research in relevant fields. Despite the name, the journal is no longer monthly, nor does it carry the notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. MNRAS publishes more articles per year than any other astronomy journal.
It is ranked 15th of 72 astrophysics journals:
It is the 2nd most cited journal in the field:

2024.05.16 05:40 OldDimension3922 Paramedic student: Research paper ideas/input !:)

Hey guys, so I’m on my last semester of medic class and need some help or advice! One of my final assignments is a 5 page research papeessay. I’m not very good at writing papers, and would appreciate some topics on what to write about.
Right now, I’m considering writing it over “pharmacological pain management” and would just go over topics like: - different drug classes (opioids, sedatives, analgesics, etc..) -each drug in the above classes -go over MOA in the body/ A+P of how it works -indications and preferences of when to use said drug -dosages and routes Contraindications/considerations I think I could manage to get 5 pages of information and statistics together for this topic.
Anyone else have to do this in the past? If so what topics did you cover? Any suggestions on better topics? Any suggestions or advice would benefit me, thank you all!

2024.05.16 05:19 Existing_Heat4864 7 Qiraat (recitations) of the Quran

7 Qiraat (recitations) of the Quran
I’m sharing a YouTube playlist (English captions) of scholar Javed Ghamidi that I think you guys would find really interesting.
The main topic is his opinion that differs from the traditional understanding about the 7 “correct” qiraat of the Quran.
Beyond that it touches on so so many fascinating facets of the Quran’s text and history that I see talked about all the time in this subreddit.
He is the head of several Islamic research institutes around the world that he and his students founded. A controversial figure among traditionalists but I personally find his argumentation meeting academic criteria.

2024.05.16 04:13 emmaliciousss Advice!

Hi all! I am looking to add a lil snake to our family, but I will absolutely not without proper research. I have been reading a LOT and have gleaned that aspen bedding can be harmful (unsure about why still), but have literally no clue what to use in replacement.
Growing up, we had a BEAUTIFUL King snake named Aria, and she lived on a regular reptile mat. I would prefer some sort of bedding/substrate because I always felt like the mat never looked neat or clean or comfortable.
Looking into a Corn snake, or a Milk snake currently.
Will also accept advice about lighting (because confusing), and advice about appropriately humidifying/heating tanks. (Although I feel adequately informed on these topics)
Also I have a 36x18x18 glass/mesh tank already, but have read conflicting information regarding how those tanks hold/help regulate heat. Any thoughts on that would be good too!
Not super interested in the bio active thing simply because I want to get started, maybe down the line sure but not now.
Thanks!

2024.05.16 04:10 giddyuprando SOS DOR ETC Where do I file and WHAT do I file?!

Throwaway bc the lack of knowledge I have on this subject is embarrassing for my role and main has too much identifying info. And honestly, not sure if this is the right sub.
I’m newly in a controller type role at a small company. We do a few million in revenue, some earned from other states, and have some employees in other states. Sales taxes are not a consideration as we are a professional services company.
I’ve had my head in the sand on this topic, as we had another team member that managed it all, though they are no longer here. The CFO seems to also not have it all completely clear and I often get tasked with going research a state we’ll have revenue or employee in and figure out what we need to do. The renewals and annual filings stay so confusing and I had a moment today where I’ve decided I’m going to just own all of this so I know it’s right and not feel so lost all the time in the future. But I’ve got to get to that point…
Where should I start? I need an organized task list of sorts, where I walk through a specific list of questions to know what the next steps are, and I want to have it in a trackable spreadsheet or something.
We do utilize a registered agent online that handles some things but I don’t even know what it is they are handling.
I almost need a “business filings for dummies” type of lesson so I can get this all straight. Please help point me in the right direction for researching this out and getting organized!

2024.05.16 04:08 BotswanaEnjoyer New Study on the Effect of Teacher Unions

I came across this relatively new study on teacher unions that I thought was interesting. I know unions aren’t necessarily socialist but they are heavily pushed for by people on the left.
https://coss.fsu.edu/econpapers/wpapewp2019_01_01.pdf
This guy, who specializes in education related research in economics, found an opportunity to do a natural experiment in Wisconsin where a law passed in 2010 severely limited the collective bargaining power of public sector unions. He found that after the law passed, teaching degrees increased by an additional 20% and pay significantly increased for high performance teachers. This is after taking into account other factors that may affect employment.
Of course this study only looks at public sector unions where there is no surplus value. I’ve noticed a lack of research on this topic as most studies just cover private sector unions. I personally don’t think this topic is black and white. Unions are often shown to have little to no effect on employment or productivity, but maybe public sector is an exception. Any thoughts?

2024.05.16 04:00 thepapermod Ethical Ways To Use Purchased Papers/Projects!

The purpose of this sub-reddit is to connect users/students with top quality academic freelance writers. The other purpose of this sub-reddit is to promote the ethical use of academic writing services to create research/model projects. Below I will list ways to intelligently use the products you receive, as well as the benefits!
Students should use the papers they buy as research guides as opposed to turning it in. Sometimes it's difficult to start an essay and think of talking points for your body paragraphs. By hiring a writer to create a model essay on your topic, you can analyze the points they made throughout, as well as utilize the sources they found!
Having an expert crafted paper as a guide also allows you to develop supporting points, possible rebuttals to include, closing statements, as well as acting as inspiration to build off the content that's already presented.
Purchasing writing services/products also benefits you by acting as a study sheet for upcoming exams or tests. The projects you receive from experts in the subject will allow you to receive the content in an organized and structured manner. For example, hiring a molecular biology expert to write a paper on cell division will act as a tremendous guide to study for upcoming exams on Cell division, mitosis, etc. Especially if your teacher isn't particularly helpful in explaining certain things you struggle with!
We have a handful of legit academic journals and websites that utilize academic content writing for articles and SEO benefits! Hiring freelance writers with legit credentials in their field can add legitimacy to academic blogs, businesses, or social media pages.
We've had a few writers on this sub contacted by professional academic journals to take part in works that have been published with major universities or editorials!

2024.05.16 03:34 zmdht Courses with Exclusive Content

Good day everyone, I was just wondering how many Universities offer courses that are heavily influenced by the research on that specific topic done by the professors handling the course. I have come across multiple modules in my degree that almost contain exclusive content from the module leaders' research interests. I have always wondered how Universities are ranked (the metric utilized), but how are courses actually structured? Is a course on say, Aerospace Engineering similarly structured ate most Universities or will each University heavily modify it apart from its core? Thank you.

2024.05.16 03:11 i-wuv-boobies Seeking Advice for Dissertation

Hello !! I'm currently pursuing my Masters in Big Data Technologies and have about 2 years of experience working as a data engineer. As I'm in the process of selecting a topic for my dissertation project, I find myself facing some doubts and uncertainties.
I have a bit of a background in sentiment analysis using Python from my coursework and possess a basic understanding of machine learning concepts. I was thinking of doing something else for my dissertation, one idea that i have is the possibility of fine-tuning a Large Language Model (LLM) into a Specialized Language Model (SLM) for sentiment analysis. However, except for movie, customer analysis I'm struggling to identify an application for this idea.
One major concern is my lack of knowledge in fine-tuning techniques. I'm wondering if it's possible to employ generative AI models and conduct some online research to bridge this knowledge gap and implement the fine-tuning process effectively.
I'd greatly appreciate any insights, suggestions, or guidance on potential applications for fine-tuning LLM into SLM for sentiment analysis or other tasks, big data projects ideas, resources for learning about fine-tuning techniques, and general advice on a dissertation project in of big data technologies.
Thank you in advance for your help and apologies if this isn't the ideal platform for such inquiries. Your expertise and support would be incredibly valuable as I navigate this dissertation topic selection process!

2024.05.16 02:39 Accomplished-Cat-325 More Qur'anic "Miracles"

  1. Islam is the only religion not named after a person or a tribe.
  2. The literary irreproducible miracle is well supported.
Even scholars agree. That's the consensus.
Arthur John Arberry said "to produce something which might be accepted as echoing however faintly the sublime rhetoric of the Arabic Koran, I have been at pains to study the intricate and richly varied rhythms which constitute the Koran's undeniable claim to rank amongst the greatest literary masterpieces of mankind."
Karen Armstrong said "It is as though Muhammad had created an entirely new literary form that some people were not ready for but which thrilled others. Without this experience of the Koran, it is extremely unlikely that Islam would have taken root."
Oliver Leaman said "the verses of the Qur'an represent its uniqueness and beauty not to mention its novelty and originality. That is why it has succeeded in convincing so many people of its truth. it imitates nothing and no one nor can it be imitated. Its style does not pall even after long periods of study and the text does not lose its freshness over time."
E.H. Palmer said "That the best of Arab writers has never succeeded in producing anything equal in merit to the Qur’an itself is not surprising."
Also, another quote "Scholar and Professor of Islamic Studies M. A. Draz affirm how the 7th-century experts were absorbed in the discourse that left them incapacitated: “In the golden age of Arab eloquence, when language reached the apogee of purity and force, and titles of honour were bestowed with solemnity on poets and orators in annual festivals, the Qur’anic word swept away all enthusiasm for poetry or prose, and caused the Seven Golden Poems hung over the doors of the Ka’ba to be taken down. All ears lent themselves to this marvel of Arabic expression."
Also, "Professor of Qur’anic Studies Angelika Neuwrith argued that the Qur’an has never been successfully challenged by anyone, past or present: “…no one has succeeded, this is right… I really think that the Qur’an has even brought Western researchers embarrassment, who wasn’t able to clarify how suddenly in an environment where there were not any appreciable written text, appeared the Qur’an with its richness of ideas and its magnificent wordings.”
Not to mention Hussein Abdul-Raof. "Hussein Abdul-Raof continues “The Arabs, at the time, had reached their linguistic peak in terms of linguistic competence and sciences, rhetoric, oratory, and poetry. No one, however, has ever been able to provide a single chapter similar to that of the Qur’an.”"
Yes, all of them are experts in Quran and in Literature. Lots of credible scholars say that the quran is inimitable.
Laid Ibn Rabah, one of the poets of the seven odes, stopped writing poetry and converted to Islam because of it.
The Qur'an's rhyme scheme is very organized, some of the best out there. Not to mention that it came out spontaneously.
It uses ten rhetorical devices in 3 words at one point. Someone tried to use more. Even though it does, people still mocked it for how it didn't meet the challenge. He used punctuation. (https://www.reddit.com/exmuslim/comments/18o5y0w/the\_rationalizer\_had\_a\_version\_of\_the\_quran/)
  1. The Qur'an predicted that the Byzantines will win the Byzantine-Sassanid war within 9 years, even though they lost the recent battle.
The Romans have been defeated in a nearby land. Yet following their defeat, they will triumph within three to nine years.
Now this is massive because it is unthinkable that a defeated army would win a war.
  1. The Qur'an knew that pain receptors are in the skin.
Surely those who reject Our signs, We will cast them into the Fire. Whenever their skin is burnt completely, We will replace it so they will ˹constantly˺ taste the punishment. Indeed, Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.
  1. The Qur'an knew about the rose nebula.
˹How horrible will it be˺ when the heavens will split apart, becoming rose-red like ˹burnt˺ oil!
  1. The Qur'an knew that wind holds the clouds up.
And it is Allah Who sends the winds, which then stir up ˹vapour, forming˺ clouds, and then We drive them to a lifeless land, giving life to the earth after its death. Similar is the Resurrection.
The USGS say, "Even though a cloud weighs tons, it doesn't fall on you because the rising air responsible for its formation keeps the cloud floating in the air. The air below the cloud is denser than the cloud, thus the cloud floats on top of the denser air nearer the land surface". (https://www.usgs.gov/special-topic/water-science-school/science/condensation-and-water-cycle?qt-science\_center\_objects=0#qt-science\_center\_objects)
The 'Scientific American' says, "Upward vertical motions, or updrafts, in the atmosphere also contribute to the floating appearance of clouds by offsetting the small fall velocities of their constituent particles. Clouds generally form, survive and grow in air that is moving upward". (https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-do-clouds-float-when/).
Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum says, "There are several reasons clouds float: first, the droplets in a cloud are small. Very small..................The second reason that clouds can float in the air is that there is a constant flow of warm air rising to meet the cloud: the warm air pushes up on the cloud and keeps it afloat". (https://www.naturemuseum.org/the-museum/blog/how-do-clouds-float#).
  1. The Qur'an knew that the atlantic and pacific ocean are different colors. They don't mix.
Q55:19-20
He merges the two bodies of ˹fresh and salt˺ water, yet between them is a barrier they never cross.
If that's not true, how does one explain this photo. ( https://www.livescience.com/planet-earth/rivers-oceans/do-the-pacific-ocean-and-the-atlantic-ocean-mix)
  1. The odd-even miracle.
Add the verse count to the chapter number, we get 57 odd and 57 even sums.
All 57 odd sums add up to 6555. Not only is that odd, that is all numbers from 1-114 added up.
All even numbers add up to 6290. That is how many verses in total there are in the Qur'an .
Muhammad was illiterate, so how could he even remember his own numbers?
Also, a verse in the Qur'an hints at it, 89:3.
By the dawn, and the ten nights, and the even and the odd, and the night when it passes! Is all this ˹not˺ a sufficient oath for those who have sense?
  1. The Qur'an gets embryology right in considering that it looks like a leech at one point, looks like a lump with a bite taken out of it at another. Also in that hearing is before sight.
You can see Keith Moore, an embryologist show his work with this document. ( https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/1194/79036bd3704127bbb25378174bfcd5b9f088.pdf)
Don't say "Galen" because Galen and the Qur'an contradict on embryology. Also, how did Muhammad know about Galen's work?
This paper by Nadeem Arif Najmi explains it in more detail. (https://www.call-to-monotheism.com/a\_muslim\_answer\_to\_criticism\_of\_\_embryology\_in\_the\_qur\_an\_\_\_by\_nadeem\_arif\_najmi)
  1. The Qur'an knew about altitude sickness.
Whoever Allah wills to guide, He opens their heart to Islam. But whoever He wills to leave astray, He makes their chest tight and constricted as if they were climbing up into the sky. This is how Allah dooms those who disbelieve.
The highest mountain is Saudi Arabia is Jabal Dakkah, at 2585 meters. (https://peakery.com/jabal-dakah-saudi-arabia/ ) Already, altitude sickness has begun at that height (https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/healthyliving/altitude-sickness ), but I don't think that Muhammad has even climbed that mountain.
  1. The Qur'an knew that the ocean is darker as one goes in, and that there are internal waves in the ocean.
Or ˹their deeds are˺ like the darkness in a deep sea, covered by waves upon waves, topped by ˹dark˺ clouds. Darkness upon darkness! If one stretches out their hand, they can hardly see it. And whoever Allah does not bless with light will have no light!
  1. The Qur'an knew about the water cycle.
Do you not see that Allah sends down rain from the sky—channelling it through streams in the earth—then produces with it crops of various colours, then they dry up and you see them wither, and then He reduces them to chaff? Surely in this is a reminder for people of reason.
We send down rain from the sky in perfect measure, causing it to soak into the earth. And We are surely able to take it away.
Infiltration and runoff mentioned.
We send fertilizing winds, and bring down rain from the sky for you to drink. It is not you who hold its reserves.
13/14. The Quran knew about the big bang. The Quran also knew that before the devonian age, life was not on land.
Do the disbelievers not realize that the heavens and earth were ˹once˺ one mass then We split them apart? And We created from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?
The second part could mean that even non-carbon life needs water.
Don't say Thales because Thales said that everything came from water, not life.
Bonus: The Sunnah knew that the Arab lands were once green.
The Last Hour will not come before wealth becomes abundant and overflowing, so much so that a man takes Zakat out of his property and cannot find anyone to accept it from him and till the land of Arabia reverts to meadows and rivers.
The Sunnah not only knew that arabia is turning green at the moment, it also knew that Arabia was once green. Ta'ood doesn't mean become, but it means revert. So, it does not mean that it will mean become.
There are lots more prophecies in the Quran and Hadith that have been fulfilled. You can see the yaqeen institute's list right here. (https://yaqeeninstitute.org/read/papeed/the-prophecies-of-prophet-muhammad )

I think I might be a digital hoarder. Every month, my wallet suffers from my hoarding tendencies: a massive amount of files and photos has forced me to buy a 2TB iCloud plan. My computer's 258GB is no longer enough, and I carry around a 1TB external hard drive daily.
Here are the main things I hoard:
  1. Important course materials and assignments from my undergraduate days (I consider these the essence of my knowledge and memories from university, so I can't bear to throw them away).
  2. Tons of photos (Yes, I'm the type who takes a picture every two steps and even organizes annual photo collections).
  3. Huge Chat app(WhatsApp) memory (I can never bring myself to delete my chat history).
  4. Documents from internships and short-term jobs (I always think they might be useful someday).
I'm curious if anyone else has similar experiences (digital hoarding behaviors)! What do you tend to hoard? And why do you find it hard to delete these things?
Currently, I'm studying Anthropology at the University of London, and I've been looking for an interesting topic for my thesis. My research focus is on the relationship between people and objects. Every time I discuss this topic with people around me, I get fascinating insights, which I find really interesting. I’d love to hear your stories! Maybe it can help me find some inspiration, haha.
Thanks in advance!

All Alternatives to a Canadian MD and their risk levels

Because of the very limited spots in Canada, many phenomenal applicants don't get a spot in their desired programs. Here's an infographic guide that some may find useful to consider.
Text Version:

United States MD

A US Medical Degree will provide the highest weight and status when applying to a Canadian residency program. This especially applies to graduates from highly-ranked (T50) US medical schools.
IF YOU WANT TO PRACTICE IN THE US:
Pursuing a US MD is the best option, especially considering recent changes to LCME accreditation (view Note 1 below).
IF YOU WANT TO PRACTICE IN CANADA:
Aim to attend top-ranked US medical institution. Also, apply for elective rotations at Canadian sites during your 3rd and 4th years of medical training so you can build connections with Canadian residency programs.

United States DO

A US Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree is recognized in Canada and makes you eligible to apply to Canadian residencies.
IF YOU WANT TO PRACTICE IN THE US:
Pursuing a US DO is a great option. US DO’s consistently outperform foreign MDs in the US residency match.
IF YOU WANT TO PRACTICE IN CANADA:
Aim to attend DO schools near the Canadian border (for convenience sake, really). Also, apply for elective rotations at Canadian sites during your 3rd and 4th years of medical training so you can build connections with Canadian residency programs.

Caribbean MD

A Caribbean MD is a risky bet due to the high rate of attrition at such schools, combined with the IMG status.
Some Caribbean schools are more reputable than others. Beware of newer schools and be sure to do your due diligence.
IF YOU WANT TO PRACTICE IN THE US:
Look for schools with a high Step 1 pass rate, high match rates, and those with strong partner ties for clinical rotations in the US.
IF YOU WANT TO PRACTICE IN CANADA:
Look for schools with high match rates, and those with strong partner ties for clinical rotations in Canada.

Other International MDs

An international MD is a risky bet as it is often hard to build connections with Canadian residency programs.
Some countries are more popular destinations, like Ireland or the UK, but the same IMG status barrier applies to an MD obtained from any country.
NOTES
  1. The LCME (Liaison Committee on Medical Education) announced in March 2021 that United States medical students graduated in 2026 and beyond will be considered IMGs (International Medical Graduates) when applying to residency programs in Canada. This applies in reverse to Canadian medical students as well: Canadian MDs graduating in 2026 and beyond will be considered IMGs in the US residency match. This makes it more difficult to match to Canadian residency programs as a US MD, and vice versa. For more info, visit: https://thebrightdoctor.com/article/us-can
  2. Risk level assumes that you wish to practice as a physician in Canada
  3. It is important to acknowledge that IMG’s typically don’t get first priority on the most competitive specialties or residency programs.
  4. This post only considers medical degree alternatives, not alternative paths like pursuing graduate school, research years, etc. Comment “MORE” if you would like us to publish another guide on this topic!
