Five humans, missing...
Spoilers for all of Undertale Yellow's main routes below
Undertale Yellow is a fan-made prequel to the hit indie game Undertale. While Undertale follows the story of Frisk, the seventh human child to fall into the monster ruled Underground, Undertale Yellow follows the story of their immediate predecessor. Meet Clover, the sixth human. Unlike the humans that fell before, this gun-toting cowboy is unique in the sense that their journey to the Underground was no accident. Clover entered the Underground voluntarily in order to investigate the disappearances of the previous five humans and, if it turned out they perished at some point after their fall, hoped to avenge their deaths. See, while Frisk possessed a red SOUL that embodied Determination, Clover's SOUL is yellow for the trait of Justice. Clover's journey would lead them all throughout the Underground, meeting some monsters that will be familiar to those who have played Undertale and some brand new faces as well.
Like Undertale before it, Undertale Yellow's story can be altered significantly depending on the player's actions. Perhaps Clover befriends the monsters they meet and determines they were unfairly trapped underground, deciding to sacrifice themselves to bring monster kind closer to freedom. Or maybe Clover will blame the monsters for the deaths of the previous human children, avenging them with swift cruelty. Either way, Clover will act in the way they believe they can best embody Justice.
Like its predecessor, Undertale Yellow tends to treat RPG mechanics as literal aspects of the game's world. Due to the abstract nature of fights in both Undertale and Undertale Yellow, with enemy monsters targeting Clover's SOUL rather than their physical body, it's understandable that there may be some confusion about how Clover actually scales to certain monsters. Luckily, this is a bit more clear in Undertale Yellow than it was in the original game, as the reveal trailer shows that the attacks of monster are things that Clover physically has to react to and dodge (we even see this same attack utilized in game) even though the battle menu only shows their SOUL.
But this is just for when encounters have already begun, what about before that? And what triggers encounters anyway? There's an area in the Wild East where boulders are falling onto the path that Clover needs to dodge. If they fail to avoid them, this begins an encounter too, where Clover is given the opportunity to avoid the "attacks" in the battle menu to negate damage. Other examples include Clover escaping damage from hot steam after touching it and avoiding damage from Axis' energy balls after they hit them. What this means for standard versus fights is a little vague, but it likely means that any attack that would deal meaningful damage starts an encounter and that it would be impossible to simply kill Clover with a sneak attack. Even if it hit them, Clover would still get the opportunity to dodge before the proper fight begins. That said, there is one example of Clover dying without triggering an encounter at the end of the Neutral Route. It's possible this is because it was an unescapable situation but the mechanics of it are still vague and unclear.
As seen with the previous examples such as the falling boulders and steam, it seems that attacks that hit Clover's SOUL and their physical body are more or less interchangeable. Or rather, it isn't possible to circumvent the SOUL to only hit the physical body because even attacks that hit Clover's physical body will trigger an encounter that can then be dodged or endured by the SOUL.
Finally, it's worth noting that the sizes of objects can vary from their appearances in the battle to what they look like in the overworld. We see Clover's SOUL alongside their physical body a few times throughout the game and it's pretty consistently a little larger than their torso. So this thread will describe feats with that scale in mind.
- At the end of certain routes, Clover acquires certain abilities/powerups that don't necessarily apply to the rest of the game. Feats or items that are limited to those routes will be marked with the corresponding route.
- Like your standard RPG's, Undertale Yellow possesses a leveling system that will increase the more enemies that Clover kills, with certain abilities being unlocked after certain levels are achieved. However, in the Genocide route Clover showed off the ability to level up rapidly simply by being filled with enough righteous fury. Abilities that are locked behind certain levels will also be marked accordingly.
- The majority of feats will come from Undertale Yellow, but occasionally clips from trailers and other promotional material on the director of the game's Youtube channel will be used, which will be labeled with a T like so:

- [Genocide] After hearing that Axis, the penultimate boss, killed a human child, Clover is filled with such rage and a desire for justice that they automatically leveled up and developed the ability to shoot energy blasts from their SOUL. The first blast obliterated the trash can lid Axis was using as a shield and after further leveling up they fired a massive beam that obliterated Axis entirely. Clover also gained an assortment of other abilities at this pointLV 15/19
- [Genocide] Throughout the game, Clover is able to undo mistakes thanks to the SAVE function. Primarily, this is thanks to Flowey doing so for you, becoming an in-universe stand-in for standard RPG Saving and Loading and ultimately allowing them to revive at the latest SAVE point for standard enemies or directly back into the battle for Boss encounters. However, at the end of the Genocide route Clover levels up enough to steal Flowey's control of the timeline, ultimately taking the SAVE ability for themselves which they can use to SAVE and LOAD in the middle of battleLV 20
Note that while Clover can store excess items in boxes they find around the Underground, they can only carry eight items in their inventory not including their current Weapon, Ammo, Armor, and Accessory. Later in the game they discovered the Dimensional Satchel which allows them to access the boxes from anywhere, but they still only have eight slots to bring into an encounter.

Sorry it's so late this week. I'm an ex Seoul Dynasty player as well and I was a bit too busy so I kind of just listened to all for it and then got way too busy for a few days with work. Here's the loose translations for episode 5 of Overwatch University. Rush had to leave very early on due to Internet issues and Moon who was watching at the time volunteered to help as a lot of the talk was in regards to the Seoul vs Shanghai Rivalry anyways so having both POVs was insightful
Topic 1 Intros and Seoul Dynasty Season 1
Aid: Have you seen Overwatch University given you have been invited by NineK
Tobi: Not really. I've skimmed around and seen pieces of the Crusty interview and Moon interview.
Aid: We're going to go over Tobis lengthy career as we were both pros
NineK: Isn't it kind of disrespectful to Tobi for you to group him up with you?
Aid: I had a lot of talent I just got cursed with a shit Coach like you NineK right Tobi?
Tobi: True
Aid: See two instances of your failures
NineK: What does that make the people who won under me? You two must've been the problem.
Aid: (pulled up Seoul Dynasty s1 roster and Tobi just explains who all of them were) Honestly you guys didn't do amazing right?
Tobi: No we were bad we went 7-3, 7-3, 5-5, and then 3-7. Just mid
NineK: Did you feel in preseason scrims you were in trouble?
Tobi: No I didn't we did very well even in the preseason games we won everything.
Rush: There any problems we didn't know about you can tell us?
Tobi: I can tell all the potential members we could've had though. Carpe, Fury, Gesture, Jjonak
NineK: Wow you started and ended with Seoul now that I think about it.
Aid: So we heard lots of rumors about Seoul but I heard you had unique member rotations where only allowing certain players for certain stages?
Tobi: If I'm clarifying a bit the split rosters was more of a season 2 decision with an A team and B team where eventually the roster mixed together. Biggest issue was the coaches couldn't agree. So sometimes they would just take turns like coach A gets to decide today then coach B gets to decide what to do and then coach c.
NineK: I heard you basically did that with a new coach per stage.
Rush: Who was your head coach?
Tobi: 4 coaches + extras
Aid: How did you decide who played what?
Tobi: Honestly the meta was so hard locked at the time the biggest issue was the coaches disagreed how we should play and it was very confusing how we should do it. We basically went back and forth with a coach of the day deciding what we did.
NineK: Too many games too. That's how Shanghai went 0-40 cause there was way too much. Not to mention no one wanted to scrim them cause it's not like you wanted to be their first victory either.
Tobi: We scrimmed them a bit
NineK: Wow you're nice people.
Tobi: They've invited us over at times and made food for us too.
Rush: Yeah there's pictures of it.
NineK: Cause of the Korean members?
Tobi: No this was way before that
NineK: Wow so kind. Isn't it cause your results weren't good either?
Tobi: Uhhh... Where were you in season 1?
NineK: I came in late. Stage 3. Season 1 was fun though
Aid: Honestly getting dragged back and forth by your coaches must be stressful. As a player there has got to be times when you do something one way and think to yourself why the heck does he want me to do it this way instead
NineK: Also they'd probably never had that many members to work with either since they just added players to Lunatic Hai
Tobi: True. We had 11 starting members and then acquired Gambler when I was having wrist issues. Then we lost another member and went back to 11. I truly believe having 12 members was so pointless
NineK: I agree like it's good if you can make it work but if you don't it just makes people feel awful. I don't know why people insisted so much on large rosters.
Tobi: Lots of people lots of possibilities I guess?
Rush: Also this is when OWL wanted to copy traditional sports so they got a bunch of players on their rosters
Tobi: They did invest more in OWL back then
NineK: They were really the team designed to win everything weren't they?
Rush: I remember an article saying they had an 80% chance of winning
NineK: People don't get how hard this time was cause of the random Mercy meta. Honestly probably wouldn't have been this bad for Seoul if patches came out like they do now
Tobi: Meta was unfavorable sure but we just played poorly to be honest
NineK: Wow so honest very cool
Topic 2: Ryujekong
Aid: Everyone was so confused by Ryujehong on Tank I want to hear what happened
Tobi: Honestly it's been so long I don't remember this time very well. I also wasn't even scrimming or playing at the time because of my wrist. I was basically just going to the doctor. We had kuki who for reasons was having troubles so he stopped playing and then Miro was having a lot of struggles at the time as well with how the meta was playing. It's mostly because of the comms cause obviously Miro had better mechanics Jehong sucks at primaling too but he would take space well and call out commands for the team to help
Aid: How did your scrims go?
Tobi: I don't remember
NineK: He can't help but not remember there were only scrims allowed at the practice facilities at the time and kids that were ill like him straight up just didn't even go. There were set times
Aid: So this isn't Jehongs main position and he was forced to tank must have been hard.
NineK & Rush: Must be
Tobi: It absolutely was. Imagine how sorry he felt to Miro. He was a support replacing Miro. If he fails not only does he get ridiculed for it but people slander Miro for being replaced by a tank of this caliber he felt very burdened feeling sorry that Miro might get insulted more than he did
NineK: I remember at the time a lot of people said Jehong had a bad Zenyatta as well but I thought it was good
Aid: Yeah I don't really see how he was particularly bad
NineK: Honestly the way things were he was probably just getting compared to Jjonak who was a beast at the time. The flame for Jehong was insane at the time
Aid: I remember his team would just hyper pocket Jjonak and have him just frag. NYXL were so defensive and good at pocketing.
NineK: In another way of seeing things that playstyle not being meta anymore might be why NYXL couldn't hack it in finals.

NineK: Damn Munchkin fucking sucked at Tracer
Rush: Wait why is Fleta playing Widow?
Tobi: He was really good at Widow

Aid: Monkey could never catch her cause of her grapple cooldown
NineK: Nearly all the monkeys sucked at primal dribbling too. If a Mercy pocketed her she never died either. Who was good then again? Carpe...

NineK: Gesture Fury were way too good at Monkey D.va. Honestly there's so much shit about London I wanna expose

Topic 3: End of Season 2 VOD of Jehong Tobi Crying Post Elimination to Spark
Aid: I didn't know this happened at the time but NineK mentioned this happened can you explain?
Tobi: At the time role lock got forced and doomfist hanzo reaper were good. At the time we were kind of really good in scrims but lost to a team in tournament we never lost too in scrims. Jehong was already out there crying and I didn't want to come out and Danny kept forcing me to come out even though I said I didn't want too. But I was afraid the broadcast would get delayed or ruined cause of me so I was forced to.
Ninek: At the time we were preparing for our game up right after them but our GM was so fuxking angry at the time like how could you force them to do this right after they lost he complained a lot to Blizzard. Cause just imagine, thank God you brought out two veterans and media trained players. Imagine if you brought out complete noobies if it was this hard for these 2 veterans imagine what they might let slip on a broadcast when emotions are this high. This is also right after their season ended and they were officially eliminated.
Rush: From Blizzards POV these 2 were icons of the game and they probably felt like they could really show the importance and feelings toward this game to the audience watching
NineK: But like RIGHT after they lost is insane to me. Like let them process instead of fucking ambushing them as they're coming down from the stage.
Rush: But it's important cause this is when they're at the peak of the emotions being felt so I get it.
NineK: There's actually so many players who went down that stage to the hallways down crying
Aid: Of course they work hard and it didn't work.
Tobi: When we scrimmed we only lost to 1 team ever. Shock. We beat Vancouver NYXL Spark everyone else.
NineK: Wow so strong
Tobi: But in the end we just lost to Spark
NineK: I can say this now but we scrimmed Hangzhou a lot at this time. They didn't have a coach we were their coaches. Literally they would scrim us and copy us the next day in games. Since GOATs they basically decided they couldn't beat us so they copied our opening strats positioning skill usage everything. That's why they did decent
Aid: So Seoul lost cause of you
Tobi: We regretted a lot because of some of our microplays. There was a thing when double shield was first happening where Moria sprays her heals on the tanks right? The enemy Sigmas could shoot their shield out behind the Orisa to block the heals. And we thought this was possible but went and said it wasn't going to be a difference maker and ignored it
NineK: Wait we were doing that since day 1 lol
Tobi: We lost to Spark because of that. We felt awful cause this is something we thought could happen but ignored. At the time Marvel was our Sigma and Michelle who was a traditional offtank was forced on Orisa. We had Fissure who was good at Orisa who retired so we had no Orisas.
Aid: Timings always been off for Seoul I guess
NineK: No wonder you felt so many emotions. I was so sad seeing this. Seoul was honestly so good in season 2 but always somehow was just one step short. It hurt my heart to see them.
Aid: Players don't like to cry like that so they have to have been feeling so much to cry like this
Topic 4: Seoul vs Shanghai
Aid: We had Moon and he said some stuff on this we were all in the West and we would just see the results but this May Melee where you were up 3-0 and got reverse swept... your stories about this?
Tobi: We didn't get ahead of ourselves Shanghai was always good at Gibraltr and we thought we would lose this map but win the rest for a 4-1. I'm not sure how we lost Busan though
Tobi: We won a lot with our double shield
Rush: Fearless wasn't supposed to play
Aid: Fearless told me at the time he didn't get to scrim even once and then came in and won everything
NineK: Wow
Aid: Yeah no scrims at all
NineK: Wait Tobi why us Bdosin on Brig and you on Baptiste?
Tobi: I played the Baptiste for Seoul at the time cause Bdosin fucking sucked at Bap. This mother fucker could never use his abilities properly. He must've gotten sick in the head watching Viol2t play or something cause whenever he had cooldowns he would be on some high ground alone shooting and scream "Aghhh" and die off on his own
NineK: I remember now it wasn't super locked who played what because no one had Briggitte experience at the time
Tobi: Also if this happened there would be cases where in double shield mirror your Brig had to swap to Zenyatta but at the time Gesture had too many complaints about coordinating his pulls with Bdosin
NineK: I have no idea how Seoul lost this right now
Tobi: There's no absolutes in Overwatch. But the only thing I remember is our loss in Junkertown
Aid: For Kings Row I remember the Felta carry with Widow this was probably in all of those OWL top 5 highlights. I still can't believe how far Shnghai got in Junkertown though
NineK: Wow even Fearless is playing Orisa here
Tobi: That's why we thought we would win here. It's such a double tank focused map. Fits was randomly flanked high on the left and I td him to get down but he died on our A defense.
NineK: Wow you guys got out ult cycled like crazy
Rush: The Torbjorn choice here leaves a lot to be desired
NineK: I agree
Aid: So then there is that little celebration Shanghai did how did you feel
Tobi: Can I curse?
NineK: Seoul is just so ugh... like back in season 2 they beat New York during GOATs who was supposed to be top 2 but Seould couldn't take those next steps to greatness here as well. There are those super important games that once you win you just go on a roll and Seoul never got to do it
Tobi: I really hated losing to Shanghai cause I could've been on the team.
NineK: Really?
Tobi: Yeah I received offers from them on 3 separate occasions but ended up choosing Seoul. I wanted to believe I made the right choice so I wanted to win
Topic 5: Tobi Happy. Season 3
Aid: There's this gif of you happy after a win
NineK: It's so funny you took your glasses off before cheering
Tobi: At the time we lost to Shanghai so often but then finally beat them
NineK: The thing is Seoul was lucky cause they actually shouldn't have been in the season 3 finals originally.
Rush: Washington was the biggest offender

NineK: I don't know Shanghais reasoning but I know Shock played how they did cause Viol2t fucking sucked at Ana lol. The thing is he did win with it but his scrim results as Ana was terrible

Smurf was but he didn't fit with his playstyle and the team well enough at the time
Tobi: If I have to point out regrets in the Shock game it was not using Zenyatta on Busan

Aid: You came back after being a player for Fusion to being Head Coach of Seoul Dynasty how was that for you?
Tobi: I kind of just stopped feeling the desire to compete like "I definitely can still compete mechanically but guess it might just not work out from here"
Tobi: Was worried that newer players he hadn't yet played with wouldn't follow his leadership well
Aid: So who was the player who least listened to you
Tobi: Everyone below me followed very well
Aid: So did you work well with the other coaches given it was mentioned there were previously conflicting visions?
Tobi: Oh these people were later coaches and we had very good talks together and worked well together
NineK: Since we wanna wait for our other guest when we talk about the next topic let's move on and talk about our time together in Fusion
Tobi: There were a lot of regrets weren't there?
NineK: The biggest problem for me was I didn't know we would be playing in Korea when I made the roster and heard it from someone from another team.
NineK: I felt sorry to Carpe for that. He's like Seoul where certain key moments not working out it feels like de-railed everything for him.
Aid: What did you think when you joined and first got to know NineK?
Tobi: When I joined I did so because I heard so much good stuff about him. Like he just knows a lot about Overwatch so I was curious about him and learned a lot. There's Crusty NineK Moon and Rush that are the coaches that are very well talked about that I was curious about. I got to meet NineK and Wow I'd never believed someone could get so angry over this game he would slam on the desk yelling while coaching. Moon: No actually around that time I got in a lot of trouble with my wife. She said I talked to Tobi more than her. This was before we signed LeeJaeGon
Tobi: In 2020 season Shanghai actually had a lot of players I wanted to play with. Fleta Lip and such. As well as just giving a better offer out right.

Tobi: Yeah always keeps contact with him too. But I really wanted to run it back with Ryujehong one last time because of the regrets of our last 2 seasons together to redeem ourselves. But he ended up choosing Vancouver and as I ended up wanting to go to Shanghai instead, they ended up already getting LeeJaeGon instead
Aid: Man the timing has just never worked out for Tobi
NineK: When he was on Fusion with me he used to always joke "damn if I was on Shanghai at least I could've been winning while benched"
Moon: So at the time LeeJaeGon and Tobi were my first choices but LJG told me he didn't want to join because he wanted to go to Mayhem with other Runaway members and then Tobi was looking at Seoul so I almost ended up with no one. But eventually LeeJaeGon chose us and tobi reached out the day after that.
NineK: So you regret not getting Tobi?
Moon: I mean you can't argue this given our results...
Tobi: They did so well
NineK: Tobi would've made the team fun for you though. That season was really bad for us but we had a lot of fun
Topic 8: Seoul vs Shanghai KickOff Clash
Aid: It looked like Seoul was happier beating Shanghai in winners finals than beating Philly in finals
Moon: The thing was the situation was so terrible for us at this time. We were quarantined with nothing.
Tobi: This team was the one we wanted to beat more than anyone else. It's why Profit was crying at the end of it all.
Moon: I will say their strats against us were very good they deserved the win regardless of what circumstances we had
Tobi: This gave me PTSD cause there was a moment when we were reverse swept in May Melee where Bdosin got pulsed with Rally. I told Vindsim no matter what to hold your shield up when he has it and in this one moment in the VOD he got stuck by fleta but thankfully Profit clutched
NineK: I will say when we got to the Hawaii LAN Shock picked you guys at Shanghai and I'll just say I didn't want to pick you.
Aid: Ahh it was the eternal rivals (implying Crusty chose Shanghai for revenge)
Moon: This time was really tough for us and we had a bunch of retirements after this. I think we thought more about what we would get to eat the next day or when we would be able to go to a Koreatown for the food we missed

Moon: Honestly it was the hardest times for us.

Moon: I honestly don't want to hear lockdown complaints from anyone around me. If we were offline and I told you our horror stories everyone here would cry.

Tobi: So you know there are things a lot of us say behind the scenes about coaches right? Like this guy is more of just a caretaker or this guy is more just strategies but I really wanted to be the coach who wouldn't have players feel bad I was their Coach. It's why I asked for a lot of help from previous coaches I worked under. I wanted all of my least favorite aspects of coaches I've seen in the past to not be things my players go through I let them all speak casually to me so they wouldn't be uncomfortable with me
NineK: Moon has the opposite take. He said his players can never act chummy with him and will always refer to him as coach
Tobi: My feelings were that I had previously worked with a lot of these players in the past so it feels okay

The answer is Krillin said during Washington he got to try a bunch of heroes and LeeSooMin was pretty decent at Kirik at the time. I had worked one year with Vindaim and it was good for us so I hoped for the same to happen. The initial meta was good for us too until we hit the Sombra meta

Moon: Ooh how did you feel about Prophet being on your team and then once he was dropped and went to 02Blast losing to him?
Tobi: He was good but the thing is whatever we put him on just didn't fit with how the team played and the Sombra meta was at its peak as well. We were tired and he was tired cause it just wasn't the best fit for either of us. I wanted him to keep doing well so I could be confident it was just a mismatch and that my scouting ability was still good. But then the meta swapped to like Widow Hanzo.
Moon: Oh wait so once again it's a choice Tobi made he regrets...
Tobi: Well no technically in the last game versus them we did win to be fair. Honestly though when he did win damn I felt low key a little bit upset/betrayed

Tobi: During Lunatic Hai I would on game days only eat noodle dishes and then we would win. I'd wear the same pair of socks for all the big games as well. But then I went to the League and kept losing and none of that stuff applied anymore

Tobi: Oh that? They just played poorly.
Moon: I was so curious cause they were supposed to be so good
Tobi: Yeah they must have been nervous or something we didn't win cause we were better they were just worse that day.
NineK: When Tobi first joined Fusion he actually beat Dynasty and was so happy about it. He was such a good player to have he was on the bench for quite a while initially but kept his mental up and was a very good teammate for us.

Hello, I've just completed 10th grade in high school in the U.S. and I've been researching the topic of moving Japan since I was in 8th grade, and now I actually want to act on this. Please tell me if this plan is terrible. Also, I've lost 50 pounds so far in a 100 pound weight loss journey, not trying to go to Japan and not be able to walk without losing my breath lol.
June 2024: Get a part time job to start saving up money for an online Japanese learning program that you can complete in 2-3 years. (please recommend some programs)
August 2024: Begin 11th grade in online school, begin learning Japanese for 3 hours a day.
Sometime in 2026: Start applying for universities in Japan. (please recommend schools, also, will I have to do a host family thing or could I live in a dorm? Since you aren't an adult until 20 in Japan.)
May 2026: Graduate high school and by now hopefully be pretty good at speaking, reading, and writing in Japanese.
Sometime in 2027 i think: Get a student visa (i have no idea how this would work) and go live in Japan. (I'll have saved up a bit of money from working part time and my parents will help me with whatever I need)
Please let me know all the flaws in my plan.

This condition is the onset of a depressed mood and its associated symptoms within the first year of the birth of the child. It is observed that most mothers experience baby blues, and some mothers develop persistent severe symptoms that do not resolve on their own. Postpartum Blues and Postpartum Depression are two different sides of the same coin, but Postpartum Depression is more severe and is a long-term condition that should not be overlooked. Postpartum Blues, also known as Baby Blues, are temporary changes in mental and emotional state that occur in the mother within 2 to 3 days after childbirth and last for approximately 2 weeks. They usually resolve on their own without medical intervention. However, suppose the symptoms of Baby Blues elevate and persist for more than a few weeks. In that case, it can be identified as Postpartum Depression (PPD), which is a more serious condition and requires proper support and health care. Jessica, a 37-year-old mother of a four-year-old, recalls feeling irritable, sleepless, stressed, and angry after giving birth. She did not receive a formal diagnosis and prefers to refer to her symptoms as "Baby Blues" rather than "Postpartum Depression" considering the severity of her condition. Postpartum Depression Causes Every year, there are 140 million births worldwide, while the incidence of postpartum depression is estimated to be around 10â20 percent of new mothers. The obvious question to ask is why some mothers get postpartum depression while others do not. Here are a few causes: Genetics Studies indicate that sometimes family history of the condition is one of the main causes of postpartum depression in mothers. More people have this prevalent subtype of major depressive disorder than any other psychiatric disorder due to genetics. The largest meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies carried out by an international team of researchers investigated the genetic makeup of postpartum depression. According to the study, common genetic factors may account for approximately 14% of the variations seen in cases of postpartum depression. Chronic Fatigue Evidence suggests that chronic fatigue may raise a woman's risk of postpartum depression. Lack of sleep lowers sleep quality, making it harder for a mother to regain her physical stamina and agility. The symptoms of anxiety and depression may worsen as a result of inadequate sleep. A single sleep session is insufficient to address the chronic fatigue that emerges from an imbalance between rest and activity. It impacts over 60% of new mothers and may result from many conditions, including thyroid dysfunction, anemia, inflammation, and infection. The changes in the motherâs hormones may also result in postpartum fatigue. Jessica had to deal with sleep disturbances in the postpartum period. She also recalls having insomnia and struggling to sleep for the recommended number of hours. Implementing sleep hygiene in small but significant steps would have helped her deal with this situation more effectively. Loss of Aspiration Stressors related to psychology may arise as a result of becoming a mother. Despite this milestone being a source of great joy, it can also lead to emotional distress due to parental frustration shortly afterward. These intense emotions may result in postpartum depression symptoms in both parents. It can disrupt the mother-child bond and, in some cases, affect the childâs emotional and cognitive development. Paternal discord can lead to later disorders in children and have an impact on their behavioral development. Individuals' depressive states worsen during this phase when couples stop doing things they used to enjoy together, such as traveling, going to the gym, enjoying moments together, seeing friends, and spending evenings out. This disconnection can sometimes become so severe that couples lose recognition for each other as the people they once loved.While adjusting to the arrival of a newborn, the mother may struggle to maintain her bond with her elder children. Jessica's relationship conflict with her husband was the most difficult aspect of her pregnancy and postpartum experience. She struggled to cope without her partner during her difficult divorce. But she was really fortunate to have the support of her friends and family, which helped her avoid severe mental health symptoms. She still believes that the presence of both parents would have been beneficial to her daughter's behavioral development. Sheehanâs Syndrome Sheehan's syndrome, first described in 1937, is postpartum hypopituitarism caused by shock or hypotension as a result of massive hemorrhage or blood loss during or after childbirth. This syndrome can manifest itself during or after the postpartum period as lactation failure, generalized weakness and debility, cessation of menstrual periods, premature wrinkling of the face and forehead, body hair loss, and dry, coarse skin.Sheehan's syndrome is estimated to affect one out of every 1,00,000 births worldwide. Women in developing and underdeveloped countries have limited access to sophisticated medical care, skilled healthcare professionals, and medical resources, which contributes to higher rates of postpartum hemorrhage and raises the figure to five out of every 1,000 births. It is considered 'rare' in industrialized nations, but the numbers are increasing due to the influx of immigrants from developing countries. Sheehan's syndrome is frequently diagnosed late due to its chronic nature. Because it presents as a case of multiple hormone deficiencies, it may be misdiagnosed as hypothyroidism, pituitary tumor, or postpartum depression. Some patients struggle with achieving the correct diagnosis and are often treated as cases of postpartum depression or major depressive disorder. An incorrect diagnosis leads to the wrong treatment and worsens symptoms, making the patient prone to intensified mental health conditions, including depression. History of Depression A history of depression and anxiety has been identified as a significant psychological risk factor for postpartum depression. According to a study that observed approximately 70,000 births in Sweden between 1997 and 2008, women with a history of depression are twenty times more likely to develop postpartum depression than those without a prior depression diagnosis. Women who have contracted depression earlier are more susceptible to hormonal changes and can better identify their symptoms. Referring to the research foundations laid by OâHara MW, it is clear that 23.9% of women who were diagnosed with postpartum depression had experienced depression before. In contrast, only 2.6% of women with no history of psychiatric illness were diagnosed with PPD symptoms. In line with previous research, this study reveals significant rates of recurring postpartum depression (PPD) among women who have previously experienced PPD. The risk of developing PPD after the birth of a second child was found to be 46.4 times higher (95% CI 31.5â68.4) for women who had been hospitalized for PPD following the birth of their first child. Similarly, women who were treated with antidepressants for PPD after their first child had a 26.9-fold increased risk of experiencing PPD after their second child (95% CI 21.9â33.2). Anemia Anemia is a condition in which the body lacks red blood cells, or hemoglobin, which transports oxygen to the tissues. During pregnancy, a woman is more likely to develop four types of anemia: iron deficiency anemia, pregnancy anemia, folate deficiency, and vitamin B-12 deficiencies. This condition may cause the baby's unfulfilled growth, resulting in an underweight or premature birth. Iron deficiency anemia is the most common type of anemia among pregnant women, accounting for approximately 80% of cases. Anemia has been identified as a significant contributor to postpartum depression. It is therefore critical to pay attention to the nutritional status of women during this time. The prevalence of anemia in pregnant women may be influenced by lifestyle, diet, and geographical location. Anemia can lead to negative pregnancy outcomes such as preeclampsia, low birth weight, small head circumference, premature birth in the baby, and postpartum depression. According to research, the prevalence of PPD in anemic women is significantly higher than in non-anemic women, and there is a link between anemia and postpartum depression. High Work Load A study published on PubMed suggests that higher psychological work demands, lower perceived control over work and family, and lower schedule autonomy intensify the symptoms of postpartum depression. Low job flexibility and a higher workload are other contributors to this condition. Working women may find it difficult to balance multiple work commitments while also dealing with the unnecessary guilt of not being good mothers. Some solutions to postpartum depression symptoms caused by poor work-life balance include mental and social support from peers and colleagues, partners assisting with household chores, reduced workload at work, maternity leave, motivation and encouragement for the mother, and equal distribution of responsibilities among partners. Jessica believes that her decision to take time off from work after becoming a mother allowed her to rest and recharge. After returning to work, she embraced the support of her coworkers, which made it easier for her to integrate work-life balance and successfully restart her career. Loss of Identity New mothers frequently experience a loss of identity. After having a baby, some parents may believe that being a parent is their sole identity. Postpartum depression symptoms may worsen if thoughts of exhaustion, worry, and unhappiness persist for an extended period, making it difficult to get through each day. Thyroid dysfunction is associated with pregnancy and may contribute to PPD in some women. Nutritional Deficiency Malnutrition, or a lack of specific nutrients such as B and D vitamins, n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), folate, trace minerals, iron, antioxidants, and so on, can increase the risk of developing postpartum depression. Lactation and pregnancy place additional demands on a new mother's body, making nutritional deficiencies more common during this time and paving the way for depression symptoms. Investigations are currently underway to determine whether low vitamin D levels may increase the risk of postpartum depression. This is because vitamin D functions as a neuroactive hormone, playing an important role in the nervous system rather than the endocrine system. Its primary function is to link sensory stimuli to the release of hormones, resulting in a hormonal response. Vitamin D helps to regulate neurotransmitters like adrenaline, norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin. Any abnormalities in these neurotransmitters and hormones have been linked to the onset of depressive symptoms.Omega-3 fatty acids have also been linked to PPD. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are two types of omega-3 fatty acids that are well-known for their cardiovascular benefits, but they also play an important role in brain development and neurotransmitter regulation. Increased DHA and EPA levels are associated with improved serotonin receptor sensitivity, which is achieved by increasing the fluidity of the receptor cell membrane. Furthermore, omega-3 fatty acids are thought to reduce neuroinflammatory processes associated with the onset of depression. been lifting weights since i was 16 ish, I'm now 22, made much progress, slowly but surely.
i went from 68kg 185cm to a max of 102kg, not I'm cutting and fairly lean at 88kg...
I've been doing the same program for all these years it's a modified version of the "fierce 5" program
3 days a week, alternating between workouts, about 2.5hours per workout, pushing to failure or very close on every set
workout A:
ab roll 3 set
vaccums 3 set
squat or leg press 3 set
bench press barbell/dumbbell 4 set
rows ( either with machine or barbell) 3 set
face pulls/reverse flies 3 sets

6 sets of triceps
3 sets a chest isolation exercise if I'm not exhausted (my chest sucks)

I've been progressing with this workout even after all this years, I don't wanna go to the gym more than 3 times week, so I think a split is gonna be inferior to a full body workout.
my gym buddy told me that what I'm doing is wrong and I should do a 3 day/week split and it will be superior
what do you guys think? i personally don't agree with him, plus he's way smaller than me is kinda fat and did roids in the past (lol) not that it matters, just thought it would be funny to mention it. I don't see how a 3day/week split would benefit me and I wouldn't know how to set it all up... 4 days a week I could definitely see that working, but I don't wanna go to the gym more than 3 times week so that's a no go. what do you guys think?

I (25)M am experiencing hair loss, hair thinning and dandruff usually itching and skin flaking that too on face near nose and chest area. My doctor mentioned I have high hemoglobin and suggested blood donation to lower it. Hello,
First time Reddit poster. Started watching in 1998 and wound down in 2011.
I read/hear a lot about how Shawn Michaels/HHH pulled a last minute swerve for Shawn to win the European Championship over The British Bulldog at the 1997 One Night Only PPV. The detractors say that although Shawn's excuse was that he was doing it for "heat" and to make the title mean something, he didn't really do much with it and treated it as an afterthought joke. The D-X vs Hart Foundation feud happened a little bit before I started tuning in, but over the last 10-15 years, especially with more "shoot" interviews available, books/articles published, etc. it's possible the narrative of what happened at One Night Only is a
mischaracterization of Shawn Michaels.
What We Know: In 1997, The British Bulldog aka Davey Boy Smith -- a member of the heel stable, The Hart Foundation -- is the European Champion and is always expected to "go over" whenever the WWE travels to Europe. 9/20/97 is the One Night Only PPV, in Birmingham, England.
What has been said by a few sources: Up till the day of the show, Davey was under the assumption that he was not going to lose the title to Shawn Michaels, since England is obviously within Europe. What made this event extra special is that there had been a plan for him to be escorted to the ring by his sister who was sadly stricken with a terminal illness. There would've then been cheers all around for this valiant hero and the 11,000 fans would then be sent home happy with a feel-good story.
Here is where things get murky: The same sources state that Shawn and HHH decided to pull a fast one on Vince McMahon an hour or so before it was show time. The two demanded that Shawn beat Davey for the European Championship.
Has Shawn or HHH ever independantly admitted that it was in that short of a turnaround and that the two went behind Davey's back? Even Jim Ross
says that Davey was with Shawn and HHH when the idea to change the finish was pitched and blames Davey for not "protecting himself." That means Davey agreed and was not forced. As mentioned earlier, the excuse that has been used is that Shawn felt that it would be a great way to draw "heat" since there was very much a pro-Davey crowd watching and so the return match in the Spring of 1998 (when they headed back to not just the UK, but this time in Manchester which was The Bulldog's billed hometown) would have a massive redemption arc which would be that much greater for the fans. In the meantime, Shawn would have good matches and elevate the European Championship, something, quite frankly, he was better at than Davey. It ties into the reasoning that has been given in that Shawn (arguably being at the peak of his ability), would be able to make that title mean something (like what he did for the Intercontinental Championship).
However, because of the backstage Kliq stories which continue to come out, the manner in which Shawn later dropped the European Championship, and the fact that there really was no return match for Shawn vs. Davey since both were out of the WWE by then, many fans have pointed to this PPV as an "obvious" example of the weight Shawn and HHH carried backstage. In recent shoot interviews, Bret Hart (who would leave the WWF six weeks later in spectacular fashion) has said this match was simply a way to make Davey and the rest of the Harts look foolish.
What you can't deny is the heat in the arena, after the match, was white-hot.
Okay with that background established, let's look to see why I feel that what happened at the One Night Only PPV is a mischaracterization of Shawn Michaels:
- The Hart narrative.
- It's hard to put a lot of stock into "he said, she said," but in case you want to take it as gospel...in Page 256 of Shawn's book (yeah, yeah, I know) Heartbreak & Triumph, he details that Davey was on board with the plans -- with no mentions of if it was pitched an hour before or days earlier. If fans are ready to believe Bret, why can't they leave wiggle room for Shawn?
- While Shawn certainly has excuses (and apologized) for his sophomoric hijinx and makes himself sound like a creative genius, Bret has consistently come off as two things: 1) Making himself look heroic 2) Making himself look like he's had a perpetual gloomy cloud over him at every stage of life. His book, My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling, briefly mentions this match and some nonsense of how he "saw the light die in Davey's eyes that day, darkness seeping into a heart that was giving out." Statements like that (and ones he continues to say) are dangerous, essentially telling fans that Shawn is partly responsible for the death of Davey Boy, stemming from this match. Huge mischaracterization.
- Bret points to how Davey told everyone he expected to win, promised everyone that he was going to win the match for his English fans and especially his sister...as proof that Shawn swerved plans at the last minute just to needle the Harts ("It was designed to make us all look stupid." -- Inside The Ropes ).
- What? There's literally thousands of instances where wrestlers lose in their hometown and use real life to push stories. And finishes change all the time. The new storyline made long term sense and Vince/Creative agreed. It could have been great, but no one expected Bulldog to quit six weeks later because of the Screwjob. No one expected Shawn's back injury to happen a couple months after that.
- Diana Hart Smith (Davey's wife and Bret/Owen's sister) in 2012 said, regarding the changed finish, you "have to do what you're told." However, she is not credible, by Bret's own words, stemming from his reaction to a largely fictional biography on the Hart Family, written by Diana (Under the Mat).
- Davey was still booked to look strong, despite losing.
- The RAW before the event, Davey had his knee "injured" from chair shots by HBK/HHH. And yet Davey still didn't "quit" when locked into the Figure Four at the PPV (even with HBK getting help from all the members of D-X). The match was stopped, akin to Stone Cold vs Bret Hart at WrestleMania 13. Diana Hart Smith even got involved in the post match antics with Chyna.
- I don't believe, for a moment, the Hart family -- especially Bret -- didn't fully agree to how it all precisely happened especially when you're getting non-wrestlers involved inside the ring. If they wanted to change it, they could've.
- There's been no mention from Bret about going to bat for Davey and them getting rejected.
- Bret Hart and the Hart Foundation still had a lot of backstage influence.
- This wasn't Savio Vega or Dean Douglas eating an unnecessary pin. There is an established history of the Harts wanting to do things their way. Bret was World Champion and by far the highest paid wrestler on the roster so although Shawn had stroke, Bret certainly did too. And Davey had been with the company and had success far longer than Shawn (though in interrupted stages). DQ/Countout results are a common occurrence for situations where two powerful wrestlers/factions don't want to "job" to one another. In fact, the 10/6/97 RAW had Bret changing a finish where he was supposed to eat a pin from HHH (via HBK interference) into a Countout.
- Yes, certainly, maturity was something Shawn and HHH lacked but you have to remember that unlike the Harts, they were not nepo-babies raised in the industry. And they were much younger (Shawn is 8 years younger than Bret whereas HHH is 12 years younger). Even Davey could be considered a nepo-baby since Dynamite Kid was his first cousin and he debuted in the WWF largely because Stu Hart cut a deal to include his son-in-law.
- Bret's possible thought process
- My opinion (yes, speculation) is that Bret knew he was out the door and so he didn't care too much about what happened to Davey's European Championship since he had his own issues he was dealing with, regarding WCW contracts, Wrestling with Shadows, and dropping the World Championship. He mentioned how stressful all that was. What is fact though is that Davey wasn't someone Bret held in high regard. From talking about him not being able to construct matches, to being under the influence, to personal life issues, to even forcing Davey to cut his long braided hair because according to Davey's family, Bret said it was starting to look too much like his (even though it wasn't the same type nor color).
- I also feel that with everything that happened between that period, and to Brian Pillman, Owen, and Davey dying very young, it understandably left an awful taste in their mouths. It all gets magnified a bit. Then add that Bret's time with WCW wasn't really anything extraordinary (for his standard), and his constant reminding us of how Goldberg ended his career makes me believe that there still is a grudge with HBK/HHH which will never truly go away. And unlike Shawn who seemingly has moved on, Bret hasn't. Which is why he keeps establishing the narrative that the Hart Foundation was always in the right and the D-X was always in the wrong.
- Finances
- 1997, the WWF was in peril. House shows and merchandise were selling, but PPVs were not. Having a swerve on a PPV makes the next one "must see TV" (again, this was a world before streaming). In this instance, the next time they came to England. Nitro was still beating RAW.
- Storyline
- Shawn had only recently turned heel (after SummerSlam, a month earlier). The plan was established from back then to have a heel Shawn face Austin at WrestleMania XIV. This was an era where there really was only one major show per week (and some on tape delay) and most fans did not have internet access at home, so establishing quick, obvious heat was important. What better way than to "screw" Davey in front of his fans and family? Beating Davey in the USA wasn't going to do it because, remember, Davey was a heel in the USA. 9/29/97 (two days later) Davey faced Vader in New York. Vader was about to beat him clean and then the Harts stormed in and used weapons on Vader, resulting in a DQ.
- If not beat Davey, a former Intercontinental Champion, then who? The talent roster was quite thin and a memorable Undertaker program was upcoming. Also, Shawn had not had a singles belt since Feb 1997. Nevertheless, the ratings jumped towards the end of 1997.
- Defending the European Championship
- How many of you remember Davey ever defending the European Championship on RAW or a PPV? From the moment he won it on 2/26/97, over the next seven months, he defended it only four times on non-house shows. Even if you include house shows, the vast majority of the defenses were in the USA so it was hardly a Europe-only belt. All the four RAW or PPV matches ended in DQ/Countout type finishes. I'll be honest, I haven't watched every single one of those matches but I do see that he beat HHH via pinfall, as one of his first defenses on 2/28/97. Davey regained the belt on 10/26/99 after he came back, but lost it six weeks later on 12/12/99 as he started spiraling, defending it only a handful of times on TV.
- Shawn, unlike Davey, really could make that belt mean something so I do believe the Manchester return match in the Spring of 1998, after he dropped the World title to Austin, would've been big (not unlike Hart vs Bulldog at SummerSlam 1992). Even his most ardent haters will admit to HBK's talent. Yes, he dropped it to HHH in a comedic fashion on 12/11/97 but what was the alternative? With Bret leaving/gone and Shawn in a program with The Undertaker (who didn't need the European Championship since he was about to face Kane), as a World Champion (earlier than he thought he was going to be -- Screwjob plans were hatched later than Sept) him randomly losing the European title would've made him look bad even if it was lost in an underhanded fashion. Losing it to Owen could've been a possibility but Owen would win the Intercontinental Championship on 10/5/97 so that wouldn't really make sense neither. That said, the two of them faced one another on 10/20/97 in a title for title clash (No Contest). Owen later beat HHH for the European title on 2/26/98 (and then lost it back) and the two later had a WrestleMania XIV match for it. So dropping it to HHH made sense. Look at the roster back then and tell me who an alternative could have been?
- Shawn gets a lot of heat for not defending the European title as often as some feel he should have. But as of 9/20/97, the WWE didn't know what Bret was going to do. Shawn infamously won the World Championship on 11/9/97. I'm not going to rehash the backstage Montreal play-by-play but I firmly believe that if Bret stayed with the WWE for a bit longer, Shawn would have had more time to have matches for the European title. The problem is everything happened so quickly. Unlike Davey, it's not like Shawn spent seven months as European Champion and defended it only four times on TV. Shawn did defend it three times on TV but in 2 1/2 months including an epic with Shamrock on RAW on 11/3/97, before he won the World title from Bret. Between a program with The Undertaker, leading D-X, and becoming World Champion sooner than he expected, there was no time (or really justification) to defend the European title even more often, when he had a program with Austin coming (in arguably the biggest title change in history).
TL:DR Even if (big, if) the finish was changed an hour before showtime, Davey agreed to the finish (with what I believe is with the Hart family on board -- but seeing how it all played out over the next few months and years left a bad taste and narrative change). Shawn winning the European Championship was what was best for business. Therefore Shawn flexing his backstage power "just because" or "only to hate on the Harts" makes zero sense.

- Rorschach (Zero tickets sold on Thursday and only four on Friday. I don't think I'll be missing much (May 13).)
IF Thursday Comps/Predictions: $1.72M/$1.80M - abracadabra1998 ($1.5M Thursday comp. Really good update here, FINALLY! Been waiting for this. This is encouraging for sure. With this growth now maybe shooting for a finish near 1.75 or maybe even approach 2. Eek. Zero sales day only a few days before previews, when you're dealing with a very low baseline. I'm not sure what's happening here (May 15). Most comps did move the right direction. If it keeps trending up perhaps I can see a finish around $1.5M Thursday. One thing to peep at: the MTC1 ratio (59%) is unusually large compared to other family releases. At T-2, other releases' MTC1 % was at: KFP4: 51%, Migration: 34%, Wonka: 59%, Wish: 35%, Trolls: 24%. So much more comparable to Wonka and KFP4; maybe something to think about when looking at keyser's numbers and thinking of the ratio there (May 14). My model has been pretty good for animated/family releases in the past, hence why every comp is so eerily similar. Still, looking at others' numbers and how much lower mine are, I am wondering if summer break might be something to consider here; from what I am aware, here in Minnesota most school districts don't start break until June (May 13). Hoping for some real acceleration this last week but not looking good (May 12). One week out, not impressed in the slightest (May 9). Rising against comps as expected, due to the short release window, but I am still failing to see anything that suggests the numbers given by some other outlets (May 5).)
- AniNate (All I can say is if you look at Tinseltown Canton presales the IF projections ($30M+) seem pretty reasonable. I will grant they might've booked more screens than necessary for it (May 16). I'm gonna guess that Nick IP spot for IF this morning ratcheted up interest, Fri-Sun sales at Canton now close to 200. Also of those 200 about 50 were for XD. Not the usual overwhelming presale split but not insignificant for a kids movie also playing on two standard screens (May 13). 45 sold at the five nearest Cinemarks for Thursday previews so far, so yeah there's evidently some kind of regional variation (May 13). I definitely haven't seen as much of a rush here with Garfield as with IF (May 11). I dunno, I have no comps but I feel like local presales is a pretty sizable haul a week in advance for an original non-Disney kids movie (May 9).)
- crazymoviekid ($2.43M Thursday and $8.49M Friday comp. Not a great day. Back down to $1.75M-$2M Thursday but pretty good day for Friday, bumping up to $7M-$7.5M. Estimate OW: $27M-$29M (May 16). Comps mostly are up. Adjusting up to around $2M-$2.25M Thursday. Unless this plays like Elemental, we're aiming around $6.5M-$7M Friday. Estimated OW: $25M-$27M (May 15). Definitely looking around $1.75M Thursday for now (May 14).
- DAJK (Selling pretty well so far here (May 4).)
- el sid ($2.4M Thursday comp. Friday up so-so 116% since last Monday. I chose Jungle Cruise, Dolittle, Elemental, Minions 2 and Sonic 2 as comps (always counted on Monday of the release week for Friday) and the true Friday number for IF would be 6.6M at the moment. In this case the comparison numbers were very similar, around 6-7M. Overall it was a boring counting today which lasted too long for so few action. And judging from some random samples Garfield also saw no significant jumps (I also didn't expect much, it's still too early IMO). Thursday up 92% since last Monday. I hoped for a bit better jump till today :( but it's also not too bad. So for Friday no big numbers but up 75% since last Monday (and the jump must have happened pretty recently) (May 13). Up 73.5% since Monday (where it had 143 sold tickets). Best sales in California, not doing too bad between the coasts. The number today is ok to me (May 12). Not really signs for a breakout for Friday so far, but very solid. It will not really get 4-6M Thursday e.g. compared to Migration but from most comps the number could be pretty decent (May 7). Looked good for the film, both on Thursday and on Friday (May 6).)
- jeffthehat ($1.90M Thursday comp. Slipped a little vs. comps. Sub-20% growth seems bad at this stage and opening size for a family film. But maybe walkups are better than presales suggest. Thinking $1.8m +/- $0.2m tomorrow (May 15).)
- katnisscinnaplex ($1.62M Combined SizeAdjusted+GrowthModel Thursday comp. $1.50M Santikos Thursday comp. Sticking to the 1.5m - 1.75m range. I'm looking for a +40% final day that would finish at 1.8m avg comps and 1.62m growth forecast. I'm not ruling out 2m, but it would need to have a very good day (May 16). Raising my expectations to 1.5 - 1.75m range. I don't really have a good feel for what age this is playing to (May 15). Thinking somewhere in the 1.2m-1.5m Thursday range despite a couple of higher comps (May 14).)
- keysersoze123 (Friday pace is promising (May 16). Dont think even if it doubles the gross, 2m is locked. But even if it does, it would barely do that much. Let us see how walkups go tomorrow. Pace is really meh for T-2. $1.75m ish for previews. OW should be similar to what I saw yesterday for now (May 15). I would say it should hit 2m previews or even more if walkups are strong. OW probably in mid to high 20s for now. Its Friday sales are not that much higher than thursday for crazy IM like say Panda 4 (May 14).)
- Relevation ($1.18M Thursday comp. IF completely tanked here, brutal comp average with no good comparisons at all. $1.2-1.5M THU and something in the ballpark of an $18-24M OW? (May 15).)
- RichWS (15 screen theater near me is giving IF peak Marvel number of showings. I know it's short and the market is quiet, but damn (May 14).)
- Rorschach (Good growth for IF, especially after Tuesday's abysmal sales (May 15). Even with no comps to go off, this growth seems pretty weaksauce. I guess we'll see how it goes tomorrow (May 14).)
- Shawn Robbins (The pre-sales I'm seeing in multiple markets are little better than I think some expect here. I wouldn't be shocked with a number between 2 and 2.5 for Thursday, as well as big jumps on Friday and Saturday. The flip side of that coin is the reviews... although kids won't care. Could see 40 happening if this plays super strong in family markets and outside coastal cities like I suspect it could, but I'm surprised the studio didn't low ball it a little more to be safe... especially since we had been very publicly keeping our range in the high 20s/low 30s from the bottom end (May 15).)
- TheFlatLannister ($2.39M Thursday comp. Really not much going on. Don't think walkups will be super strong either (May 13). Not much growth (May 10). Pace is collapsing a bit. Continues its downward trend (May 7). After a strong start, this has cooled off quite a bit (May 4).)
- Tinalera (Pretty quiet Vancouver and Calgary area (May 13).)
- vafrow ($0.6M Thursday comp. Well, we finally got something. It still lags behind comps, and if I could be bothered to track walk ups, I'm guessing this will do okay. But it's still lagging some very reasonable comps by a large margin here (May 16). It's going up, but slowly. The thing that hit me looking at the numbers is that the most popular format so far is the VIP theatres, which are 19+. With such low sales, you can't read too much into anything, but it kind of speaks to how this isn't grabbing the family crowd (May 14). Some marginal movement, but we're running out of time for this. At this stage, I expect my market is an anomaly, but I still hope and expect it will close the gap in the final few days (May 13). Still nothing (May 12). Still nothing happening. I did check Friday sales, and it was a lot stronger with 51 tickets sold. That's better, but still not tremendous. I also checked the wider radius, where it's pretty much exactly where Haunted Mansion was, which hit $3.1M opening (May 11). Still nothing really happening here (May 10). Since the last update, they released full showtime sets, and it actually lost two showtimes rather than gain. From the sound of it, it might be doing better in other Canadian markets, particularly BC (May 8). Numbers are still really low, making the standard track fairly useless. I did do a larger 100km radius track, encompassing the broader southern Ontaro market (~8M population, MTC4 being about 70-80% of the market). Even against Haunted Mansion, which underindexed here, it's not doing well (May 4).)

I'll just go with the average here and call it a day with my prediction: $1 Million, +/- 0.2. Not much movement here (May 15). Not a good update at all but I am wondering about the summer break deal here as well. For Back to Black it shouldn't affect it much I would think (May 13).)
- crazymoviekid ($1.24M Thursday and $4.35M Friday comp. Decent day. Feeling an inch past $1.25M Thursday but much better comps for Friday, aiming now between $4M-$5M. Estimated OW: $14M-$17M (May 16). Comps leveling off. Adjusting up to $1M Thursday and wouldn't trust Friday comp ($10.05M) (May 15). Weird comps. Let's go for $.5M-$.75M Thursday comp.)

Comps are hovering in the $1.5-2.2M range and I don't have a clue how walkups play here, but I suppose the $1.85M THU average my comps spit out sounds pretty right, combined with a $15Mish OW (May 15).)
- Rorschach ($1.09M/$4.68M/$5.23M Thursday/Friday/Thursday+Friday comp. Decent day for Strangers. Didn't quite continue off yesterday's big bump, but still holding well against the Tarot comp (May 15). More than double from yesterday's count. Curious to see if it keeps up the momentum going forward (May 14). Tarot had more tickets sold for Thursday compared to its Friday showings when I checked the Monday before it came out; hence, why the comps are so all over the place at the moment. The Thurs + Fri comp does appear to be a reasonable middle ground (May 13).)
- TwoMisfits (TMobile deal for May - $5 ticket to The Strangers Chapter 1 next Tuesday (May 9).)
Furiosa Thursday Comp: $4.31M - abracadabra1998 ($5.46M Thursday comp. GxK obviously really propping the average up but for now I could see that settling at around $5 Million, still good pace! (May 12). Really good stuff in this market (May 9). Reallyyyyyy good day 1 here. I want to note that: NO I do NOT think preview numbers will be that high; it's just highlighting the fact that this is likely a movie that will be running hot in my market, as cinephile blockbusters usually do. Next update I will have T-14 comps, which will be a lot lower due to the short release window (May 8).)
- AniNate (Encouraging to see the weekend fill out a bit. Been seeing a lot of promotion during the basketball playoffs so general awareness has to be getting there now. (May 15). Skimmed through ThuFri and Valley View (Cleveland vicinity) has sold roughly 60 Furiosa tix so far while Tinseltown (Canton) has sold 40. I'm guessing the upfront audience does lean more toward the urban/cosmopolitan sensibilities (May 9). Presales show there's definitely some hype for this. Regal gonna irritate trackers again, offering no upcharge IMAX for Furiosa (May 8).)

- el sid ($5.8M average Thursday comp (without Exorcist 2) (May 12). Furiosa continues its strong performance in "my" theaters. The movie yesterday had already 1.310 sold tickets (for Thursday, May 23). Up 15% in ca. 24 hours which isn't bad at all after the first rush. Already comfortably in front of The Fall Guy's final sales (it had 1.071 counted on Thursday for Thursday) and almost on par with Civil War's final sales (1.357) and also the Apes finally had not more than 1.657 sold tickets in my theaters (May 11). I also can't complain about Furiosa's presales in my theaters, not at all. Already 1,138 sold tickets (in all of "my" 7 theaters) for May 23. 14 days left. Promising start. Civil War on Thursday of the release week for Thursday had 1,357 sold tickets and The Fall Guy finally had 1,071 sold tickets (May 9).)

- TheFlatLannister ($4.44M Thursday comp. Keeps climbing at a strong pace (May 11). This continues to grow at an excellent rate (May 10). Really strong day 2. The short presales is for sure a factor (May 9). Not seeing much of a breakout. Still pretty solid start to presales (May 8).)
- vafrow ($2.9M Thursday comp. Comps are showing as steady since the last update, but it actually dipped quite a bit this week before rebounding today. Advance ticket buying has been so off in this market recently for some reason. Holding pace with Apes is a good sign (May 16). It had a good day (May 12). Mediocre day 2 (May 10). Not the hottest start. IMAX is the format of choice though, so, ATP will be high (May 9).)
Hit Man - vafrow (Getting a theatrical release up here in Canada, and early signs are that it might get a pretty decent screen count. Not super wide or anything, but a pretty decent amount for a weekend that has a lot of other releases (May 14).)
The Garfield Movie EA+Thursday Comp: $2.24M - abracadabra1998 ($0.76M EA comp and $1.19M Thursday comp. Still not really accelerating, and the EA is falling against comps (May 12). Good EA numbers, but many of these comps were PLF-only EA, which this is not, so I think the ATP will be quite lower and that should be adjusted for (May 9).)
- AniNate (EA sales look decent now, but this does feel rather weak compared to the IF presales. Not 100% certain what's going on here but based on this I buy the trades' opening estimates over the forum vibes (May 15). I definitely haven't seen as much of a rush here with Garfield as with IF (May 11).)
- el sid (The very even sales are a good sign (May 7). For Sunday, May 19, I can already report that also in my theaters it looks very good for Garfield. They will for sure add shows soon. It has so far only 1 show/theater and the shows are almost sold out, between 1 and 4 seats are still available. So my guess still is that this movie if it's not totally bad (and first reviews here were quite positive) will become a (big) hit. Seems not much on Thursday but it's a step in the right direction (May 6).)

It has very low ATP as well and actual would be even lower as its going to see tons of kids tickets (May 14). Early shows are regular digital shows at 1PM this sunday. So ATP will be very low. I think 500k ish at best. Preview let us see how things go in the final week. Presales at this point are almost non existent (May 13).)

It's worth noting that the May holiday in Canada is the weekend of May 17-20th, not the weekend after with Memorial Day. I can see families prioritizing getting out the holiday weekend when they have more time (May 4).)
The Lord of the Rings Extended Edition Re-Releases (June 8-10) - BoxOfficePro (Fathom Events has also announced that select Regal Cinemas will present the films in 4DX on June 22/23/24 for Fellowship/Towers/Return respectively (May 14).)
- katnisscinnaplex (Up to ~1,400 shows now with new locations picking it up and others adding a second showing. LotR1 has sold 831 seats OD, LotR2 sold 715 seats OD, and LotR3 sold 735 seats OD. For comparison, Phantom Menace didn't break 800 tickets until T-3 and we're still over a month out. JW3 comp is currently around 9m (it was at 1,670 tickets sold at this point!) (May 6).)
Inside Out 2 Average Thursday Comp: $8.14M - abracadabra1998 ($3.67M Thursday comp. Holy numbers of shows and seats! Multiplexes are really expecting a lot here. Sales off the bat not amazing here sadly, but we shall see where it goes (May 15).)

Too early to judge presales as ticket sales just started early this morning. Families dont book tickets on weekday mornings. Wait until evening today to judge it. From a release perspective its way bigger than all animation movies seen recently including Panda 4. Easily the biggest I have seen in a long time. Only movie which is not comparable is Mario but that was not just a family flick (May 14).)
- Porthos (VERY BAD COMPS: $8.83M Thursday comp. I really do not have good comps for this movie. Like, at all. Especially for D1. With that in mind, I did some digging and did manage to get the Elemental D1 numbers out of the old Tracking thread: IO2 = 5.45946x Elemental on D1 [13.10m]. Now will Inside Out 2 be as backloaded as Elemental? Well it's tough to literally sell 5.5x times the amount of tickets on the final couple of days that Elemental did, so perhaps not. But it does show how fracking backloaded purely kids animation is. Anyway, this is 30 days out and it isn't a CBM film (like AtSV) or CBM-adjacent film (like Incredibles 2). The Sonic 2 comp is perhaps a little concerning. On the other hand, nearly a weeks more of pre-sales so not exactly a great comp. 3.5% of presales are 3D and 40.1% are PLF (May 15). On the Saturday of release weekend (ie NOT EA) there is a special event screening for IO2: INSIDE OUT 2: FUNKO FAMILY EVENT! (2024) Sat June 15th. Might boost the OW slightly, depending on how wide this event is and how much more these tickets will presumably cost (May 11).)
- TheFlatLannister ($8.20M Thursday comp. This is a super super strong day 2. Probably just Orlando overindexing, but yeah starting to lean towards something big brewing. Florida presales are somehow even crazier. Sold 2357 seats and is getting a blockbuster rollout in terms of showing allocations. Kung Fu panda comp day 2: gives me $8.50M (May 15). Well, I can't really tell if this is a breakout or not yet. Looks very good especially in the first few hours. These are probably terrible comps, but might as well try something (May 14).)
- TwoMisfits (I'm kinda shocked at the opening set from my Cinemarks... 2 screens (1 PLF, 1 not) and 6 showings at my PLF 14 for Thursday (and 11 showings on the same screens once it runs full day - 7 PLF b/c 1 is 3d on the reg screen, 4 not)... 3 screens (.75 3d, 2.25 not) and 9 showings at the non-PLF 12 for Thursday (and 12 showings on 2.25 screens once it runs full day)... So, 2 and 2.25 screens for the weekend presale sets... Disney must be charging a huge % for themselves b/c this is an Elemental opening set at my PLF...a little more generous for Thursday at my non-PLF, but then they too drop to an Elemental opening set after the adult Disney base Thursday rush... (May 14).)
- vafrow (No new sales. Whatever glitches in the system on day 1 didn't push sales to day 2. I still think the lack of base ticket options will push families to wait. Cineplex has jacked up the cost of premium formats, plus they're throwing in an increase for opening weekend of major releases. It adds up quickly for families (May 16). With the site glitching yesterday, it might account for the slow start. But, what's interesting is the format breakdown. Nothing is being made available in anything close to a regular showtime. The one non 3D showing in Dolby is a matinee showing. Everything else is carrying a hefty premium. They'll likely release regular showtimes closer to release, but right now, it's priced to get eager fans to pay the premium formats (May 15).)
- YM! (In fairness it's only been an hour but yeah sales are softer than I expected. However, it is a month out and will largely skew more towards kids than say TLM/Across so wasn't expecting a blitz like them. Here at Marcus theaters are going all out for IO2 with it having the lion share of PLFs with it getting both screens when there is two PLFs with tentpole like levels of screens (May 14). Was taking a look at Marcus Cinemas to see that they have preloaded Inside Out 2 showtimes which seem to start at 3:00 pm on a Thursday. It seems like Marcus is going all out on it as judging from showtimes it's taking away all of Bad Boysâ PLFs in that theaters that have two+ PLFs are giving all to IO2 (May 11).)

40 students in the batch. Small and underfunded department. Government university.
Had to stay here out of desperation because of financial problems (the fees is 30k) and the faculty making fake promises of support the worse my situation became as they trapped me and more years went by. Numerous incidents of misconduct by high ranking staff which I am told to accept as normal. Given the country's situation, my life is worse than ruined.

Post-OG Cloud ruminates on what he could have done to save Aerith. Had he not been so lost in his own mind âdistracted by Sephiroth and Jenova, consumed by his need to fulfill the emptiness at the core of his identityâ, would he have paid more attention to Aerithâs sadness and anticipated her plan to go to the Forgotten Capital alone? Could she have survived if not for his obsession with what tormented him at the time? Could he have figured it out and kept her by his side? Heâs angry with himself in retrospect, drowning in guilt, just like in
Advent Children.
Here are the choruses, which usually contain the thesis main message of a song:

In these choruses, Cloud asserts that he will get it right this time (âthis timeâ referring to the second chance that is the
Remake trilogy). He will make sure he saves Aerith and never lets her go. He knows sheâs gone, but he will fight against time to get her back. He longs for her smile and her light again, and he cannot bear the guilt: so he doesnât. Post-OG Cloud embarks on a new adventure: âI want to go to a place where everything is new,â said Cloud to Wol and Echo in
Eclipse Contact before facing his past and being launched into
Remake. âHollowâ makes far more sense now, doesnât it? Itâs a song not only about Cloudâs loss, but also about his determination to save Aerith this time. Given that itâs the theme song of
Remake, the fact that âHollowâ fits with our theory perfectly is a very good sign: a theme song is meant to reflect the main plot of a story, indicating as our theory states that
Remake is principally, albeit secretly, about Cloud saving Aerith. Because of this hope being set up, Iâm confident that they will be together in the end, reunited for good. My dear Clerith friends, this is the hidden purpose of the
Remake trilogy. Cloud and Aerith will be reunited.
VI. e) ii. âNo Promises to Keepâ Lyrics
This is quite obvious. Aerith is resigned to her fate, but still harbors hope that she will meet Cloud again in a permanent reunion:

VI. f) The Theme of Reunion Explained?
The last point I want to hit on is the concept of reunion. In OG, this theme was pretty much dominated by the Jenova Reunion. To an OG fan back in 1997, âreunionâ meant âSephiroth and Jenovaâs evil planâ. However, in the
Remake trilogy, the theme is expanded into something more. The first time Cloud meets Aerith in
Remake, she gives him a flower and tells him something she didnât in OG:
âLovers used to give these when they were reunited...â
In addition, weâve already talked about how part 5 of âAerithâs Theme - The Cetraâ from the
Remake OST tells the story of Cloud and Aerithâs reunion (see section âV. b) ii. 2)â).
Many moments exclusive to the
Remake trilogy serve the same purpose: linking the theme of reunion to Aerith. This expansion of the theme is highly significant. Our theory is that the
Remake trilogy exists to reunite Cloud and Aerith, so the fact that the trilogy would implement so many Clerith-centric references to reunion is great support for our theory.
VI. g) i. The Leslie-Cloud Parallel
Letâs consider another instance involving the reunion flower in
Remake, more precisely, the chapter 14 subplot surrounding Leslieâs lost lover. In case you need a refresher, Leslie is one of Corneoâs lackeys, although he secretly plans to betray him. He once had a fiancĂ©e and things were looking up until she was selected as one of Corneoâs brides. The day before she disappeared (presumably taken by Corneo), his fiancĂ©e broke up with him with no explanation. It was confusing and left Leslie perplex. As she broke up with him, she returned a necklace to him, one with a flower pendant. Of course, that flower is the very same reunion flower Aerith gives Cloud in chapter 2.
Evidently, Leslie and Cloud are going through parallel situations. At this point in time, Aerith was just kidnapped by Shinra, and Cloud is on his way to get her back. Both their loved ones have been taken by tyrant rulers, one being slumlord Corneo and the other being the Shinra government. In fact, even Leslie and Cloudâs attitudes share similar disillusioned, cold and stoic qualities. Leslieâs fiancĂ©e would evidently be paralleled by Aerith.
The most obvious proof of the Leslie-Cloud parallel is written plainly on the list of
Remakeâs chapter 14 main scenario objectives. Objective 7, called âFor the Reunionâ, consists of receiving the grappling guns needed to reach topside and save Aerith. The description of the objective reads as follows:
âLeslie gives them grappling guns, and they wish each other luck in reuniting with their respective loved ones. Leslie walks off, and the three prepare to climb the wall.â
The grappling guns are âFor the Reunionâ, because evidently, the loved one Cloud wants to reunite with is Aerith.
All this is simple and apparent enough. Just the fact that the theme of reunion is linked to Clerith in this way is proof enough, but thereâs another layer to the Leslie-Cloud parallel. Not only does Leslieâs situation reinforce the concept of a Clerith reunion, it also mirrors the specifics of our theory: namely that Cloud will save Aerith from specifically Sephiroth (represented in Leslieâs scenario by Corneo) and that Cloud will take the initiative to accomplish this reunion. These two specific aspects of our theory are reflected by Leslieâs circumstances, meaning the Leslie-Cloud parallel not only pushes the theme of reunion, but also supports our specific theory.
VI. g) i. 1) The Separators: Corneo and Sephiroth
Iâll first prove that Leslieâs scenario is not meant to echo Cloudâs separation from Aerith at the hands of Shinra âor at least not exclusivelyâ, but rather Cloudâs separation from Aerith at the hands of Sephiroth. Corneo would therefore be paralleled by Sephiroth rather than the tyrannical Shinra government.
The first piece of proof for the Corneo-Seohiroth parallel lies within the way in which Leslieâs fiancĂ©e broke things off: by lying. Aerith also lies to Cloud to create distance between them, but not pertaining to her kidnappingâ rather, pertaining to her fated death. Since Sephiroth is Aerithâs killer and not Shinra, Corneoâs role in the Leslie-Cloud parallel is analogous to Sephirothâs rather than Shinraâs.
There are two pieces of evidence that the Corneo-Sephiroth comparison makes more sense than the Corneo-Shinra one. The first lies in the fact that Leslieâs breakup resembles Cloudâs resolution scene: the topic of Cloudâs resolution scene is Aerithâs fate at the hands of Sephiroth rather than her kidnapping by Shinra, meaning Corneo and Sephiroth are the antagonists of both heartbreaks.
Letâs examine Leslieâs breakup. Here is how his fiancĂ©e broke things off, taken from the English script of
Remakeâs chapter 14, with tone indicators added by me in
bold:
âFiancĂ©e: It was all just a dream, wasn't it[?]

Now, here is a more literal translation of this quote from the original Japanese (verified by me via DeepL), with tone indicators added by me in

Leslieâs fiancĂ©e is clearly breaking up with him to spare him the pain of blaming himself for not being able to protect her from Corneo, as she knows itâs too late for her to escape from the slumlordâs clutches. We know this because we understand that the pendant she gave back to him symbolizes a reunion (especially between lovers, as Aerith told Cloud in chapter 2). In fact, the Japanese version of the script reveals that the fiancĂ©e was about to reveal the meaning of the flower, perhaps in the hopes that they would find each other once more, but she lost her nerve at the last second. Notice that she tells Leslie two specific things. One: their love or their future together was only a dream, meaning that it wasnât real. Two: he should forget about her, because the dream is over now and itâs time to wake up from it.
If youâre finding this familiar, then you might be ahead of me. Letâs take a look at what Aerith says to Cloud in his resolution scene, also in the English script of
Remakeâs chapter 14, with tone indicators added by me in
bold:
âAerith: [âŠ] you canât fall in love with me. [It]âs not real [âŠ]. (With a sigh, as though from sadness or difficulty, but resolutely) Itâs almost morning. Time to go.â

Just like Leslieâs fiancĂ©e, Aerith is rejecting or denying Cloudâs love for her in order to spare him from the pain of not having been able to be with her before her death, as she believes it is inevitable. Just like the fiancĂ©e, Aerith also tells Cloud two things. One: their love is imaginary or isnât real. Two: itâs morning, and she has to go (she says this right before Cloud wakes from the pseudo-dream).
In both cases, the women know something about their fate that the men donât and are hiding this impending tragedy from them. Just like Leslieâs fiancĂ©e, Aerith uses well-intentioned deception to protect her loved one from the pain that will come from her fateâ the lie, of course, is that their love isnât real. Both women are hopeless, and both men are initially clueless. Aerithâs resolution canât be about her kidnapping, because Aerith thinks her rescue is anything but hopelessâ sheâs sure Cloud will come save her from Shinra. She says so herself in OGâs disk 1, chapter 8:
âCloud: Aeris!? You safe?
Aeris: Yeah, I'm all right. I knew that [you] would come for me.â
What Aerith is so resigned about in Cloudâs resolution scene isnât her kidnapping, but instead her fated death at the hands of Sephiroth. Nojima hints at this in
FFVII Remake Ultimania:
âIf you know Aerithâs fate, then this line would really pull at your heart strings [âŠ]â (section 08 âSecretsâ, âDevelopment Staff Interviews, Part 2: Tetsuya Nomura, Yoshinori Kitase, Yoshinori Kitase, Kazushige Nojimaâ, page 744).
Here is what codirector Toriyama had to say on Aerithâs words:
â[While] these words are intended for Cloud, I think Aerith is partly speaking them to herself. The contents of her request may be at odds with how she truly feels insideâ (FFVII Remake Material Ultimania Plus, VA Script Notes, âA Dream Shown by Aerithâ, âScenario Staff Q&A - Answered by Motomu Toriyamaâ).
These two quotes by the devs show that Aerith is trying to protect Cloud from her death. Therefore, the Corneo-Sephiroth parallel is far more apt than the Corneo-Shinra parallel.
The second piece of evidence supporting my belief that Corneo mirrors Sephiroth and not Shinra in the Leslie-Cloud parallel is the inclusion of the theme of revenge that crops up in the following piece of dialogue:
âTifa: Why did you wanna come down here?
Leslie: Revenge. I know I need to let go, but I can't. I need closure, 'cause without it... I'll never be able to move onâ (Remake, chapter 14).
Leslieâs sentiment toward Corneo resembles Cloudâs feelings toward Sephiroth after Aerithâs death. Revenge links Cloud to Sephiroth, not to Shinra. Corneo and Sephiroth reflect each other in that, as a consequence of their actions toward a woman, the man who loves her desires revenge.
Additionally, it looks like Leslieâs obsession with revenge as a means to closure is the reason he didnât bother trying to understand the message his fiancĂ©e left him with: heâs focused on his hate rather than his love, and itâs hindering him. He doesnât succeed in killing Corneo either: his focus and energy are misplaced. Cloudâs desire for vengeance against Sephiroth is also depicted as an obstacle to accomplishing his goals (see how in section âIII. c)â of
my previous literary analysis). Once more, the Corneo-Sephiroth parallel fits far better than a Corneo-Shinra perspective.
VI. g) i. 2) The Reunion Seekers: Leslie and Cloud
The other aspect of the Leslie-Cloud parallel that supports our theory is that in both scenarios, they both take charge of the situation and decide to actively seek reunion with their respective lovers. The following dialogue excerpt, supplemented by the VA script notes, shows Leslieâs initiative:
âTifa: [Your fiancĂ©e] could still be out there.
Barret: Can never be sure how much someone means to ya till they're gone. Don't give up on her yet.
Leslie: (Looks at the flower pendant, [recalling his loverâs words) A message in the language of flowers⊠I wonder what she meant by it.
[âŠ]
Tifa: Reunion.
Leslie: Huh?
Tifa: In the language of flowers, it means âreunion.â
(Leslie shifts his gaze from Tifa to the pendant and stares at it for some time. At last he understands the words his lover left him. With that, as if his mind has been made up, he clutches the pendant and hangs it around his neck.)
Leslie: Then I guess Iâll just have to find her firstâ (FFVII Remake Material Ultimania Plus, VA Script Notes, âOther Notable Stage Directions - Chapters 14-16â).
Take note of Leslieâs final response and the determination with which he speaks: âThen I guess Iâll just have to find her firstâ. Remember that weâre searching for evidence that Cloud is going to be the one reaching out to Aerith in the
Remake trilogy, and that itâs his turn to take his future into his hands. He must be more attentive, more active this time. And Leslieâs words of determination reflect this perfectly. Leslie must find his fiancĂ©e first, just like Cloud has to be the one to offer his hand to Aerith in the
Remake trilogy and fight for her. This is exactly what our theory is all about.
VI. g) i. 3) Delayed Realizations
Interestingly, not only does Leslieâs determination mirror Cloudâs, but both men are depicted as realizing the truth too late. Just like Leslie only began searching for his fiancĂ©e six months after her disappearance, Cloud only realizes he loves Aerith in OG once sheâs died. It took him this long to actually get somewhere in his mission to reunite with herâ âsomewhereâ being the
Remake trilogy.
Even Barretâs words highlight the loversâ delay: âCan never be sure how much someone means to ya till they're goneâ. Barret would know: he lost his wife Myrna, whom he loved dearly. The devs have Barret comment on the situation as a man whose lover died, mirroring Cloudâs situation in OG. Just as Barret says, Cloud only truly realized the strength of how he felt for Aerith in OG once she was gone. The gunmanâs words apply to both Leslie and Cloudâs tardy initiatives. Regardless of this delay, both men are now determined to see their respective reunions through.
The degree to which the Leslie-Cloud parallel fits our theory is a great sign of its validity: even the details are lining up!
VI. g) ii. Reunion in the Theme Songs
Too easy: in our analysis of the lyrics of the theme songs, we covered how both texts include the theme of reunion. âNo Promises to Keepâ is especially relevant (see section âVI. e) ii.â), as the entire song is Aerith hoping against fate for a reunion with Cloud (even if you believe the song is about all her companions, that still includes Cloud).
On top of these reunion-themed lyrics, during Aerithâs in-game performance of âNo Promises to Keepâ at the Gold Saucer production of
Loveless, her yellow blossoms signifying reunion bloom all around her as Cloud watches her, captivated.
Another great sign for our theory: the highly significant theme songs are on our side!
VI. g) iii. Waking Up Reunited
The thing I want to juxtapose to our theory is a small yet special moment in chapter 2 of
Rebirth that stuck out to me like a sore thumb and got me really excited about sharing it with you. This moment occurs after the battle against the Midgardsormr. Weâll be comparing it to two other clips, describing all three in chronological order, and making deductions based on their similarities.
The first clip I want to address occurs in chapter 8 of
Remake (1:32-2:12). There are a couple of things I want to point out in this scene. First, Aerith wakes Cloud from unconsciousness with a cute call of âHello~?â. Second, despite pretending that he doesnât, he immediately recognizes her. The VA script notes prove it:
âAerith: Nice to meet you again.
Cloud actually remembers Aerith, but he pretends not to, perhaps wishing to make himself look cool.
Cloud: Again, huh?
Aerith: What? You donât remember? How aboutâŠthe flowers?
Cloud looks at the flowers at his feet and pretends as if heâs only just remembered.
Cloud: Oh, the flower sellerâ (FFVII Remake Material Ultimania Plus, VA script notes, âReuniting with Aerithâ).
So: she wakes him with a cute call, and he recognizes her. Also note that these two elements also apply to the OG church reunion scene.
Now onto the
Rebirth chapter 2 scene that stuck out to me. After Cloud is saved from the Midgardsormr by Sephiroth,
Cloud wakes from an unconsciousness spell with Aerith calling for him (7:20-7:34).
Once more, Aerith wakes him with a cute call (this time, itâs âWakey, wakey!â), and Cloud recognizes her. In this Midgardsormr clip, unlike their reunion in the church, Cloud verbalizes that he remembers her. This time, thereâs more: next, Aerith tells Cloud âăăăă, ăŻă©ăŠăâ, or âokaeri, Cloudâ, which translates to âwelcome back, Cloudâ. âOkaeriâ is what you say in Japanese when someone has returned home. In the third clip we will analyze, Aerith says âokaeriâ to Cloud once more. But first, letâs break down this second clip.
I donât know about you, but this cutscene felt extremely weird to me when I first encountered it. That is, it would have been, if not for the theory Iâd begun formulating at that time.
You see, the devs could have chosen for Aerith to ask Cloud if he remembers his own name or where they are, if heâs okay, or check if he responds to his own name. In fact, asking someone whoâs been hit on the head to say their own name is a much more common reaction to them finally waking up than asking them if they remember you. Even stranger is Cloudâs reaction: he could have answered âYeah, youâre Aerith,â or âI remember everything, Iâm fineâ. Instead, he says her name with this airy and wonderstruck tone. He sounds like heâs opening his eyes to something mystic rather than his comrade leaning over him, like heâs seeing someone unexpectedly for the first time in a while⊠or rather like heâs waking from a trance of some kindâ a trance in which he did not remember Aerith, and now he does. You may see where Iâm going with this.
Letâs examine the third clip, wherein Aerith tells Cloud âokaeriâ again. More specifically, in chapter 14, Aerith welcomes Cloud back when he snaps out of his zombified, Sephiroth-controlled state and runs toward her. Of course,
itâs the sight of her and his memories of meeting her in chapter 2 of Remake that shake him awake (2:17:43-2:18:02).
For a third time, Aerith wakes Cloud. This time, sheâs pulling him out of a trance and back to himself. And for a third time, Cloud remembers her. In fact, itâs remembering her that wakes him up. Cloud calls her name and Aerith says âokaeriâ in both the post-Midgardsormr cutscene and this third clip. And in both scenes, not only does Cloud return to himself the way someone returns home (recall that âokaeriâ is used to welcome someone back home), but heâs also returning to her, recognizing her as his home.
Now weâve got three scenes lined up: the church reunion scene (both in OG and
Remake), the Midgardsormr scene and the hand-reach scene. All three of these recognition scenes feature Cloud being woken up by Aerith and remembering who she is. The main difference is that, in the scenes among these three that are exclusive to
Rebirth, Cloudâs return to Aerith is far more meaningful, as he already knows her name, and knows more about who she is to him. Evidently, in the OG church reunion scene, Cloud only remembers being sold a flower by this girl. In the
Remake version, he remembers the same thing, plus the attack of the whispers. So thereâs something much more weighty about the
Rebirth recognition scenes: he remembers more, and he remembers deeper. These arenât just recognition scenes, theyâre also mini-reunions. Of course, as weâve already analyzed pertaining to the hand-reaching scene, Cloud remembering Aerith is followed by him being the one to take action and run toward her, eager to save her, because she means the world to him. When you place the Midgardsormr scene between the church reunion scene and the hand-reach scene, an evolution of Cloud waking up and remembering Aerith is formed. Each mini-reunion scene adds a piece to the story: the church scene informs us that Cloud and Aerith are meeting again, the Midgardsormr scene tips us off that something mystic is going on from Cloudâs tone when he says Aerithâs name, and the hand reach scene tells us that as a consequence of remembering who Aerith is, Cloud saves her from falling to her death and saving her. âMeeting againâ, âmysticâ, and âsaving Aerithâ: these are the keywords of the mini-reunion scenes. They are also the keywords of our theory on Cloudâs mission to save Aerith. This time around Cloud knows more and is more conscious about how he feels for Aerith, just like he feels more when in the hand-reach scene in
Rebirth compared to the church reunion scene in
Remake. From the latter scene to the former, Cloud gradually wakes up and remembers his love for and loss of Aerith in the OG more and more. Each mini-reunion brings him closer to saving her when he blocks the masamune. This is why I am certain that in part 3, whether Cloud comes to his full senses or not, whether he remembers the events of OG or not, he will save Aerith this time. The
Remake trilogy is centered around Aerith, after all. In fact, donât take it from me, take it from Nojima:
âAerith's the most important character in the remake so we paid special attention to her linesâ (FFVII Remake Ultimania, section 08 âSecretsâ, âDevelopment Staff Interviews, Part 2: Tetsuya Nomura, Yoshinori Kitase, Kazushige Nojimaâ, page 744).
I have full confidence in this fact: one way or another, these two will have a happy ending. This is Cloudâs second chance, and as he swore in âHollowâ, he is not losing her again. That is why I donât think you should fret, and that our Clerith hearts will be very happy to see these two together again for good in part 3.
VI. h) Zooming In
In fact, this zooming-in method of directing playersâ attention to important narrative beats is far from new.
VI. h) i. Changing Fate
Letâs divert our attention to
Nanakiâs Skywheel date (2:28-3:30). The dialogue goes like this: Nanaki brings us the Whispers and suggests the party might eventually forget about their existence, and Cloud says that frankly, if itâs impossible for them to change fate either way, then it would be better for them to forget to Whispers altogether.
This is a very clear message from the devs: âThere would be no point in including the Whispers in the
Remaketrilogy if we did not make use of their defeatâ. Theyâre telling us through Cloudâs dialogue that they know it would be foul play and bad writing to introduce the theme of defying fate if it didnât eventually pay off.
As if it werenât clear enough what the devs are referring to, Nanaki brings up Aerithâs death directly after Cloud delivers the devsâ message to us. He actually makes Cloud promise to save her. This is pretty on the nose. By promising Nanaki he will protect Aerith, the devs are promising us the same. Iâm certain that part 3 will deliver on this promise.
If you still arenât sold, Iâd like to direct your attention to the framing of the shot where Cloud says âIf we canât change [fate]â (2:49-2:51). Thereâs a zoom-in on his mouth, which is a visual cue that translates to âwhat this character is saying right now is important to the plotâ. Itâs very indiscreet in theory: the camera literally hones in on the invisible words as though the script has them highlighted, italicized triple-underlined and in bold.
VI. h) ii. Aerithâs Knowledge
Weâve seen the
Remake trilogy use this camera framing at least twice so far. The first time occurs in
Remakeâs chapter 8, before it becomes clear that Aerith knows things from the OG game that she wouldnât normally know if this were just a remastered version of the same 1997 plot. Iâll let
Remake Ultimaniaâs description of this moment speak for itself:
âWhen Cloud and Aerith return the rescued children to Oates, the man in the tattered black cloak shows up again at the hideout. The moment the man grasps Cloudâs arm, heâs overcome by another violent headache and sees a vision of Sephiroth. Cloud wonders if this man who supposedly died five years ago could possibly still be alive. When he says as much to Aerith, she gives him a vague replyâ (FFVII Remake Ultimania, section 04: âScenarioâ, âChapter 8 Main Story Digestâ, page 256).
Aerithâs âvague replyâ is accentuated by a very deliberate
zoom-in on her mouth (1:18:05-1:18:09), and therefore her words.
The framing of this shot indicates to us that what Aerith says provides an important hint as to the plotâs direction. Sure enough, with hindsight, itâs easy to see thatâs true.
VI. h) iii. Tifaâs Question
Another time this framing is used is in chapter 1 of
Rebirth, after Cloud recounts the Nibelheim incident.
Tifa asks the group why Sephiroth is choosing to come back now, after five years (37:55-37:58).
Once more, we are being signaled that the reason Sephiroth chose to return at the moment he did is significant to the plot, but cannot be revealed explicitly yet. The reason why Sephiroth took five years to return is because thatâs how long it took for Cloud to get back on his feet after the Nibelheim incident: Sephiroth wants and/or needs to manipulate Cloud in particular rather than all the other people with Jenova cells in them. It took five years for Cloud to not only go through Hojoâs experiments but also escape Shinra and make his way to Seventh Heaven, where Tifa nursed him back to healthâ therefore, it took five years until Sephirothâs favorite pawn was available to be used. There are a few reasons why Cloud is the one Sephiroth wants to use, and all of them would be spoilers at this point in
Rebirth to players who donât know the OG plot. The devs canât reveal any of them yet, but they do indicate via a close-up shot of Tifaâs mouth that her question is important.
VI. h) iv. The Takeaway
As you can see, this framing of charactersâ mouths when they speak signals a plot-significant piece of dialogue. This means Cloudâs words on his gondola date with Nanaki canât be brushed off as a red herring or an unimportant or throwaway line: it has narrative weight.
VII. The Devs
I think itâs important to remember the devs and their commitment to the world of
FFVII. They know best for this story, and theyâve proven it to be true many times over. There are many things about the devsâ intentions that the fandom donât seem to know that I think would give you confidence to find out.
VII. a) Shifting Themes
Good storytellers donât introduce themes as a way to pull the rug from under audiencesâ feet by later rendering them completely irrelevant to the plot.
In other words, the devs would not have introduced the notion of fate as an antagonistic force in
Remake, nor allowed the players to defeat it in chapter 18, had they planned for these themes not to pay off at all. Think of how good
FFVII OG and
FF stories in general are, how strong the writing is from a narrative point of view. Nothing is included for no reason or for a cheap reactionâ especially not a central theme of a story. Fate and defeating it is a huge point of
Remake, and not for no reason.
I mean, think about a storyline all about defying fate ending with a shrug and a âOh well, we tried.â It would be ridiculous! The devs are better than that.
VII. b) What the Devs Want
The devs are well aware that fans of
FFVII have been begging for Aerithâs resurrection since 1997. All those petitions, all those myths of a revival hack⊠SE knows about them all too well. They were even referenced by
FFâs 30th anniversary expo, which partly promoted
Remake:
âNo one expected [Aerithâs death] in the middle of the story. Rumors of a secret way to revive Aerith spread, and it was clear players were having a hard time saying goodbye to her too. Even now, twenty years later, it still feels like a shocking turn of eventsâ (Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary Exposition Pamphlet, page 36).
Hamaguchi, codirector of the
Remake project, commented on these rumors:
âInterviewer: Do you have a favorite fake rumor about the original FFVII?
Hamaguchi: I hear a lot about Aerith coming back to life and that's something that's very interesting to hearâ (Hamaguchi interview: â129 Rapid-Fire Questions Answered About Final Fantasy VII Rebirthâ, by Game Informer).
The devs are also aware of how beloved Clerith is to the
FFVII fandom, especially in Japanâ in fact, the only
FFVII ship name that is an official iOS search term on the Japanese Apple Store is Clerithâs (âăŻă©ăšăąâ or âkuraeaâ in Japanese). Aerith herself is a widely beloved character, particularly, once more, in Japan. For instance,
Famitsu and
NHKâs recent polls on the best
FF heroine and on the best
FF character in general both resulted in Aerith ranking number 3, beaten only in the latter poll by Cloud at number 1 and
FFXâs Yuna at number 2.
The devs know how well-loved both Clerith and Aerith are. And in fact, they love Aerith at least as much as we do:
âCloud's feelings [of guilt] cannot be resolved by anyone other than Aerith. I tried to convey [that Aerith is saying to Cloud] âI'm still here for youââ (FFVII Reunion Files, Nojimaâs note on Aerithâs character file, page 58).
&
âWhen I saw the finished product of [Aerithâs face in] CG, I thought, "Oh, isnât she so cute?â (FFVII Reunion Files, Nomuraâs note on Aerithâs character file, page 58).

"The idea of having Aeris die during the story had a great impact on all the dev staff," Toriyama explained, "and personally I decided to dedicate my efforts to depicting Aeris in as appealing a way as possible, so that she would become an irreplaceable character to the player in preparation for that moment" (Toriyama interview âFinal Fantasy anniversary interview: Toriyama speaksâ by VG247).
The devs care about Aerith, and theyâre fully aware we do too.
I think a lot of people have it in their heads that the devs donât want anything to change from the OG story, but thereâs a lot of evidence that says otherwise. Codirector Toriyama spoke on this, stating the following about the production process of
Remake:
â[âŠ] there were times the original version became a hindrance. Specifically, staff members with a strong attachment to Final Fantasy VII would often hold themselves back for fear of deviating too much from the original. When we created the original game, we obviously didnât feel bound in that way. We were passionate about creating a brand new Final Fantasy title, and so we dove in and embraced whatever seemed most interesting to us. We wanted to take that approach this time as well, so we made a special effort to liberate ourselves whenever we held back, remembering that it was okay to do the things we wanted to doâ (FFVII Remake Ultimania, section 08 âSecretsâ, âDevelopment Staff Interviews, Part 1: Motomu Toriyama, Naoki Hamaguchi, Teruki Endoâ, page 737).
Codirector Nomura said the following:
âWhen I asked Nojima if heâd write the scenario, I was clear about my demands up front. I said, âIf we're going to remake Final Fantasy VII, I want it to be done like this.â At that point, I was intent on making something more than just a remake. [Similarly to how] the battle system this time incorporates elements of the original gameâs ATB mechanics [while] also been reborn using a real-time approach [âŠ], I wanted to make a story that players would feel is fundamentally Final Fantasy VII but also something newâ (FFVII Remake Ultimania, section 08 âSecretsâ, âDevelopment Staff Interviews, Part 2: Tetsuya Nomura, Yoshinori Kitase, Kazushige Nojimaâ, page 745).
Clearly, the devs donât want to be bogged down by the OG, and are making efforts to do things the way they want to rather than the way they were previously done. The newer generation of developers such as codirector Hamaguchi is also involved in these story changes:
âInterviewer: There are also drastically more scenes with Sephiroth than there were in the original game.
Nojima: We weren't planning on having him appear so much at firstâ the idea was only to hint at his presence. But we changed our approach partway through and became more proactive with having him appear, after which the number of scenes he features in rapidly increased.
Nomura: Hamaguchi [codirector Naoki Hamaguchi] came up to me one day and said in a mysterious tone, âI'd like to talk to you about something.â He asked me about having there be a battle with Sephiroth in Midgar. In the original game, Sephirothâs true body is located elsewhere, so he didnât think I'd give in to the idea so easily. I think he even prepared materials to persuade me. But in the end I agreed readily [laughs]â (FFVII Remake Ultimania, section 08 âSecretsâ, âDevelopment Staff Interviews, Part 2: Tetsuya Nomura, Yoshinori Kitase, Kazushige Nojimaâ, page 746).
Kitase, the producer of the
Remake trilogy, even says that after working on this project for so long, and after spending almost 30 years on the
FFVII project and getting to know the characters, he has realized that:
âThe more [he works] on it, the more [he wants] to make all these characters happy. [He wants] to give them a happy ending. The rest of the teamâs opinions [obviously] also have to be taken into consideration, so it won't be all happiness and rainbows. But [he] just [wants] to make [the characters of FFVII] happyâ (Kitase and Hamaguchiâs interview âFinal Fantasy VII Rebirthâs Producer Just Wants 'the Characters to End Up Happy'â, by Vandal, translated by me).
Kitase is indeed only one developer, but heâs the producer of this project: thatâs the very top position. He oversees everything and nothing goes without his approval. That counts for something. Of course, Kitase is fair and values the input of all the devs, so of course it wonât be âall happiness and rainbowsââ but I sincerely believe thereâs a big chance that Cloud and Aerith are heading toward their happy ending. Even if this theory is completely bogus, I want to have faith that the devs would not sacrifice good storytelling for nostalgia and a conservative attitude toward preserving the OG story, as that would be cheap of them, and we have not known them to be cheap. This game truly matters to them, so I think they deserve our faith.

So I've never done this before however i see a bunch of these stories on YouTube and decided to put my query to the people and see what sort of response i get.
Ill call my self T and my partner is S. we have known each other for about 4 years. and i suppose we have been official for about 2 years. our situation all started as a friend with benefits kind of situation and i was never really interested in a relationship or commitment.
I consider myself extremely logical and I don't deal with the majority of emotions, as most of the time I see them as obstacles that distract you from doing the things you have to do. However I don't want you all to think I am heartless I am not.
There is a lot more to this story then i will put here for now however i will add more if it is what people want for a better perspective.
I T am about 5'10" 160lbs quite athletic a regular gym goer and i train in BJJ (Jiu Jit Su). i am very driven to get out of the commercial work system, to achieve financial freedom. i don't make up excuses to not do things and anytime i know i am being lazy i berate myself, always hold myself accountable, and never use any circumstance as an excuse to not be productive in life. simple example if i am being lazy and i know it i say to myself "you know your being lazy and you need to do better" and that's it.
My partner S is about 5'6" 165lbs she is a animal lover and very compassionate person however that's about it she doesn't really have any specific hobbies and she seems to like the simple life she works in care and makes better then minimum wage.
Finally before we start ill put this here just because it might be helpful for some. when we first met S was as smoker and she used to regularly go to the pub and drink. for me these are major no no's for me as i have always hated smoking and to be honest i don't see the point in drinking I understand that's my opinion and I'm happy with it. however also because it was a FWB situation i didn't raise any concerns, however S also knew i didn't like smoking and so never did it around me.
so i guess i should start that after S said she would like to see where we could go in terms of a relationship. one of the first things i said was i wouldn't date someone who drinks or smokes just because they are things i disagree with and i don't want to be around them in my life. she said she would drop smoking but drinking was a bit of a different story there were still times she would come back late from the pub with friends and i could smell the alcohol coming off her. during these times i would become quite cold and distant as she knew i didn't like it but did it anyway and to be honest i just thought it was careless and disrespectful to what i had asked of her because of what she wanted with me.
After numerous arguments over time she finally decided she would no longer drink anymore which then led to my biggest issue with her and i had also spoken to her regarding this issue when i bought up no smoking and no drinking. And that was, her weight. in terms of relationships she is the only person i have been with who is overweight, and i don't mean obese just overweight by like 20-25lbs that's all. I had said to her that in order for this to become a relationship like she wanted i wanted her to loose weight, during these talks i also made sure to ask her if there was anything about me within my control that she would change to make us better or her happier with me like my body and/or personality, she did say she would like me to gain a little weight as i was quite skinny back then around 140lbs and i agreed. I should also mention the whole reason we initially starting seeing each other was because she said she wanted to loose some weight and she knew i was doing a home based workout program that she said she would like to get involved with.
so with all the above said the smoking stopped and the drinking stopped however when it came to loosing the weight it just didn't seem to be happening, within about 3 months of me going to the gym i had already gained a good amount of muscle and was getting stronger and healthier. i had taken S to the gym with me even though i knew we had different weight goals i always encouraged her to push her limits on the exercises she was doing especially cardio because i knew that was important for weight loss. however the thing i kept noticing was that she would give up the second it started to get difficult. which for me just said that the desire and determination wasn't there.
it wasn't long before she said she didn't like going to the gym with me as she said i was too intense and that it took the enjoyment away from going to the gym. i said to her that during the time of her journey she isn't there to enjoy it, she is there to achieve a goal, being stuck in a caloric deficit and working to push past limits to loose weight is going to be difficult and a struggle but that's where pushing through and being determined comes into play
Despite this she was adamant that she didn't want to go to the gym with me and that she would find another way to achieve the goal. Enter the PT so she decided to look into getting a PT to help her loose weight and that seemed to last about 2 months her PT gave her a workout program to stick to and a diet plan which she should follow. all of this seemed to perk her up a lot and she did seem more determined to work with it.
however despite all of the help she had received the results spoke for themselves which was basically nothing. this is where i am starting to get frustrated and i guess disappointed. when it comes to exercise and working out i have always understood that no matter your goal you have to push yourself past the limits of comfort to achieve good results.
the whole weight loss journey has been going on for over 18months now and i have said to her that i am not willing to wait forever, the way i see it is that it is an issue with effort and determination and nothing else. i have said that if she cannot achieve a noticeable change by the end of this year i will walk out.
i know that sounds horrible and i can see why people would think that of me, however she is constantly asking me to be more attentive and more affectionate however i have never found larger girls attractive and im just struggling to show her the affection she wants whilst she is overweight.
i would like to get other peoples thoughts on this so as i can get a broader perspective. please if people would like more information or a deeper dive into the overall story please let me know.

I already considered this piece the second greatest musical evidence for Clerith after the
London Symphony Orchestraâs Final Fantasy VII Symphonyâs second movement âWords Drowned by Fireworksâ and its
guide, but now that I know about the Clerith reunion that was baked into the ending, the gap between the two is narrower. Each time I hear Cloud begin to call out for Aerith in part 3 (
3:04), I immediately start crying. It sounds so much to me like Cloudâs voice in the dark saying âAerithâŠ?â, meek and scared. If youâve read everything so far, you know how long Cloud has been looking for Aerith, lost without her, searching relentlessly for decades in real-life time. Through
FFT,
DFF,
Advent Children,
MFF x FFVII⊠all of it spent looking for his Promised Land. In OG, Cloud was so tormented by Jenovaâs manipulation and so consumed by the chase for Sephiroth that he could not realize what or how much he felt for her until she was taken away forever. The piece weâve just analyzed tells the story of Cloud and Aerith intertwining and separating against their will, and you can truly feel Cloudâs anxiety as he struggles to wrench Aerith out of fateâs cruel grasp. Perhaps it is because of Aerithâs ultimately fatal responsibility, inherited from her mother, that this iteration of her theme is called âThe Cetraâ.
Though in part 5, Cloud and Aerith reunite⊠could this reunion symbolize their meeting again in
Remake, or something more permanent? I think itâs meant to leave us wondering.
Iâm very sensitive to music, and as Iâm typing this, Iâm crying a bit. I wanted to share my interpretation of âAerithâs Theme - The Cetraâ with you very badly, because it makes me feel so much and really enhances Clerithâs story. Iâm overjoyed to have found out about the reunion at the very end. And itâs all because you guys showed love for my last analysis! You guys are giving me gifts every day.
V. b) i. 3) Combined Analysis
Please listen to and watch
the scene of Cloudâs MOTF 6 (4:21-8:46) again, and consider section âV. b) i. 2)â. What is Uematsu telling us? Similarly to how main world theme of
FFVII informs us that Jenova is sabotaging Cloudâs identity far before it becomes a plot point in OG, âAerithâs theme - The Cetraâ is telling us what not even
Remake Cloud consciously knows at this point: heâs been searching desperately for her, and fears losing her once more.
As if that wasnât proof enough, the timing of the shots and musical phrases is absolutely damning. Recall that part 3 of âAerithâs theme - The Cetraâ specifically symbolizes Cloudâs anxiety surrounding Aerithâs safety. It is this particular part of the piece that plays for the entirety of Aerithâs allusions to her murderers and her death (7:25-7:54), including the very moment where âCloud feels his chest constrict tightlyâ (7:51-7:54). Whatâs more, part 5 the piece, which specifically Cloud freeing Aerith from the restraints of fate, coincides with the moment Tifa grabs Aerithâs hand and pulls her out from the circle of Whispers closing in on her (8:42-8:45). This moment leads me to believe that the reunion in part 5 of the piece indeed symbolizes Cloud succeeding (perhaps with Tifaâs help) in saving Aerith from her tragic fate and reuniting with her for good.
Itâs heart-wrenching and brilliant. Our theory stands strong.
V. b) ii. Credits: Piece Inclusion
I find it very telling that the character themes included in the
credits of Remake are Cloudâs âHollowâ (0:00-5:24), an orchestral arrangement of Aerithâs theme (5:24-9:24), and an orchestral arrangement of the main world theme, (9:24-14:27) which of course includes Cloudâs true theme. No other character themes appear during the rest of the credits (14:27-18:09). This is telling: the credits are communicating to us that
Remake is about Cloud and Aerith. Our Mission Theory only gets stronger.
V. b) iii. Showing Relationships Through Music: Intermingling Character Themes
This doesnât have to do with the Mission, but hereâs a pretty good anti-Cloti argument while weâre here.
As shown in section âV. a) i.â where we explored the roles of Cloud, Jenova and Sephirothâs themes within the
FFVII world theme, the way character themes interact in a piece can tell you a lot about those charactersâ relationships. This is certainly the case in âAerithâs Theme - The Cetraâ as well (see section âV. b. ii. 2)â).
Iâd like to mention that in all of my listening to the
Remake OST and rewatching playthroughs of
Remake, Iâve never encountered a single piece that united Cloud and Tifaâs themes. Not once. Let alone a piece that depicts them as intimately or emotionally as âAerithâs Theme - The Cetraâ depicts Cloud and Aerith. Even the most Cloti cutscenes in
Remake arenât supported by pieces mixing or even juxtaposing Cloud and Tifaâs themes. I canât find any of Cloudâs motifs anywhere during
the orchestral arrangement of Tifaâs theme that plays during her resolution scene in chapter 14. I canât find either of their motifs in
the track the plays when Cloud calls Tifa beautiful at Seventh Heaven in chapter 3. A motif from Tifaâs theme does appear in
the track that plays during the childhood promise scene in chapter 4, (0:00-0:25), but it never plays at the same time as or even near Cloudâs motifs (1:23-1:47 and 2:03-2:29). Theyâre distant or otherwise unaffiliated.
The only exception is that an altered version of Cloudâs themeâs section A phrase 1 appears in the background of
Tifaâs theme (1:17-1:23). This symbolizes her connection to Cloud and how much of her attention and worry revolve around himâ a reference to how she cares so much that it borders on dependency. Of course, it doesnât go both ways: Tifa isnât in Cloudâs theme at all. To me, this lack of reciprocity concerning the inclusion of Cloudâs motif in Tifaâs theme signifies that the only time Cloud and Tifa are together is in her head. She does think about him a lot, which we witness in her chapter of
Trace of Two Pasts. Tifa loses sleep over him even two years after he left Nibelheim, despite the fact that she barely knew him at all:
âThe moment she heard the word âSoldierâ, the few memories she had with Cloud Strife came flooding back. He never contacted her after they parted ways two years ago [âŠ]. She tossed and turned all night. When she counted them again, her memories with Cloud were so surprisingly few that others might find it hard to believe that they grew up as next-door neighborsâ (Trace of Two Pasts, translated by pekotranslates on Tumblr).
FFVII Remake Ultimania also comments on the superficial nature of Cloud and Tifaâs water tower promise, and how regardless of its naĂŻvetĂ©, it became fundamental to Tifa:
âThough rooted in a jejune heroine fantasy of being rescued in a pinch by her hero, this promise is clearly etched in Tifaâs memoryâ (Tifaâs profile in section 01 of âCharacter & Worldâ, âAn Enduring Childhood Promiseâ in âTopics of Tifaâ page 20).
You could argue that âAerithâs Theme - The Cetraâ is only one song wherein Cloud and Aerithâs themes interweave, but youâd be proven wrong by the
Rebirth OSTâŠ
V. c) The
Rebirth OST
Unfortunately, the full
Rebirth OST isnât out and available where I can listen to it right now. However, based solely on the incomplete OST thatâs available to me right now, I can tell you with certainty that the composers were told to incorporate Clerith into the musical storytelling: Cloud and Aerithâs themes intermingle in multiple pieces. I canât imagine what else Iâll discover once I listen to the full OST. For now, I checked out what was available on YouTube and listened to cutscene audios. This section would be eternal if I included every time Cloud and Aerithâs motifs interact, especially in chapter 14. Trust me, Iâd love to talk about every single one, but this thing is long enough already, so letâs just address what pertains to our Mission Theory specifically rather than stopping at every single Clerith reference in the OST.
V. c) i. Ending Cutscene Music
Ending cutscenes are often used to address the next step the characters will be taking as well as their emotional and mental state. They also open up new questions to make the player curious. Indeed,
Rebirthâs ending cutscene (18:56-25:00) gives us an impression of how the party members feel by the end of the game: everyone misses Aerith. Barret looks upset and confused at the mention of her (19:35-19:45), the girls are crying and Nanaki is mourning (19:58-20:35). Additionally, we are shown the empty White Materia and Black Materia in Cloudâs possession (20:40-21:24), foreshadowing that they will come to be important in part 3. Cloud and Aerith share a warm goodbye, and exchange promises: Aerith will send smoke signals if something happens to her so a worried Cloud can remain updated on her well-being and she will stop Meteor, and Cloud will stop Sephiroth (23:00-25:00). The fact that this scene is animated in CGI is enough to tell us that the devs consider it narratively important, just like they do Bugenhagenâs observatory and the partyâs advance into the Forgotten Capital CGI cutscenes. What did the composers decide to communicate with us about the end of
Rebirth and the plot going forward?
Big surprise: Clerith.
During the entire cutscene, only two themes play: Cloudâs and Aerithâs. The cutsceneâs music begins only when Cloud notices Aerith among the party members and begins watching her (19:21). She interacts with the rest of the party without their knowledge, different segments of her theme playing one after another. Her theme only stops when Cloud finally looks away from her and to the empty White Materia in his hand (20:45). The music focuses on the mystery and ominousness of these materia, only returning to Aerith once Cloud hears her voice and repeats her message to the party (21:30).
Cloudâs theme appears when he asserts that Barret neednât worry about him (section A of Cloudâs true theme, 22:41), though soft and tentative, only swelling when Barret and Tifa climb aboard the Tiny Bronco and Cloud finds himself alone with Aerith again (22:57). As he asks Aerith if â[sheâll] be okay getting backâ (23:08), the final phrase of section A of his theme plays, but without its concluding note, the tonic. He waits for her to answer him as his theme waits for hers to complete and answer it, that final note dragging long over the seconds (23:09-23:13). She answers with a teasing remark that references their unwillingness to part from each other back in
Remakeâs Evergreen Park:
â[Cloud has] a chat with Aerith, from whom heâs reluctant to partâ (chapter 9 in section 04 âScenarioâ, âMain Story Digestâ, â4. Saying Goodbyeâ, page 275)â.
As soon as Aerith answers Cloudâs question with this romantic callback, her theme answers his too: section C of Aerithâs theme begins with the keyâs tonic, resolving Cloudâs incomplete phrase (23:13): she gives him resolution. He chuckles, getting her reference, and the music swells (23:16). The music ebbs and flows thusly, following the rhythms and underlying emotions of their conversation. Finally, the piece ends with phrase 2 of of section A of Cloudâs true theme, following a strong repetition of the first half of Aerithâs themeâs section A. The two make their promises to each other, and âNo Promises to Keepâ begins, leading us to the credits. This is most definitely a Clerith song, but more on that later.
What this shows us is that Cloud and Aerithâs relationship is fundamental to the plot of
Rebirth and will also be fundamental to the plot of part 3: they are isolated one one-on-one in this cutscene, and the music depicts their warm, sweet interaction as well as the strength of Aerithâs character to contrast with Cloudâs somewhat meek personality. The composers are telling us that these two, specifically, together alone, are hugely important to the plot here. This was already true in OG, but no such emphasis was ever placed on their interactions and relationship in its music. Something is different, deeper, more intense now. The Mission Theory explains why. It also suits our theory that the composers are emphasizing the centrality of Clerith in the plot of the
Remake trilogy. Cloudâs love for Aerith is the reason for the trilogyâs existence, and it will be the greatest motivator for Cloud in part 3. Itâs a grand announcement.
Just like in
Remake, I could not find a single instance of Cloud and Tifaâs themes interacting in
Rebirth, apart from at the end of the intimate Skywheel dateâ but every girl receives this treatment in their intimate dates, so each of these instances can be crossed out. Additionally, the Tifa date is not the canon one, but I digressâŠ
V. c) iii. Credits
- Piece Inclusion
Once more, I find it very telling that of all the pieces included in
the credits of Rebirth, the only character themes are Cloudâs and Aerithâs. We start with a song about Aerithâs point of view to mirror *Remakeâ*s âHollowâ, âNo Promises to Keepâ (5:18-11:10), followed by the
FFVII world theme (11:10-16:12) which of course contains Cloudâs true theme, then we move into a piece whose unofficially translated title is âParade Battle Ceremony - The Dawn of a New Worldâ as an arrangement of the parade ceremony theme from chapter 4 (16:12-19:03), followed by a theme for the Lifestream springs whose name I donât have (19:03-21:38), âJunon - Fortified Metropolisâ (21:38-24:28), and finally, a gorgeous arrangement of Aerithâs theme (24:28-28:47). No other character is referenced in the credits music: the credits are telling us
Rebirth is about Clerith. Our Mission Theory explains why.
V. c) iii. 2) âNo Promises to Keepâ
At the very end of this song written and performed by Aerith, weâre treated with a sweet little piano conclusion (10:46-11:10): it begins with a variation on Aerithâs themeâs section A (10:46-11:01), and concludes with two ascending arpeggios, each four notes long (11:01-11:10). Each of these ascending arpeggios is a variation of the phrase 1 of Cloudâs true themeâs section A. The differences are minimal. The phrase is usually five notes long rather than four, the first arpeggio ends on the tonic rather than Cloudâs iconic subtonic, and the second arpeggio starts on the subtonic rather than the tonic. The song Aerith wrote concludes with Cloudâs most famous motif. This is also the case in
her Gold Saucer performance (3:31-3:41).
V. c) iii. 3) Arrangement of Aerithâs Theme
The final piece in
the credits is an arrangement of Aerithâs theme (24:28-28:47) which has noticeably similar elements to the version of her theme that plays during
the Jenova Lifeclinger battle in chapter 14 (0:12-3:36), such as the female choirs. Since these female choirs are only heard in the Forgotten City version of Aerithâs theme, and since the credits arrangement of her theme plays at the same time as clips from her chapter 14 pseudo-death roll across the screen, I estimate that this credits arrangement specifically reflects the event of Aerithâs pseudo-death. Recall that composers had access to the credits video as they composed, meaning this piece is specifically written for Aerithâs pseudo-death in
Rebirth.
What I find fascinating is that, just like the arrangements of her theme that play during Aerithâs pseudo-death and the Jenova Lifeclinger battle, this credits arrangement contains the sound of Cloudâs pain, rage and protest. Phrase 1 and the first three notes of phrase 2 of Cloudâs true theme section A play on the strings and brass quite loudly and insistently, just as Cloud blocking masamune appears on
the credits screen (25:11-25:21). Sephirothâs dissonant, high and screechy violins appear just as his face comes onto the screen (26:33), and almost as a protective response, phrases 1 and 2 of Cloudâs true themeâs section A return (26:47-27:00). Finally, similarly to what we hear in part 5 of âAerithâs Theme - The Cetraâ, a slightly modified section A phrase 1 of Cloudâs true theme play along with section C phrase 3 of Aerithâs theme (oh wow section A and C section Aerith for Cloudâs theme and section Cloud for Aerithâs theme I just realized thatâs such a cute coincidence), though unfortunately they do not meet in the middle like last time since they start two octaves apart (28:20-28:25). Iâve recreated it for you once more
here so you can really appreciate it. The fact that their motifs donât truly reunite like in âAerithâs Theme - The Cetraâ is sad, but the very last thing you see onscreen is Aerithâs goodbye to the Tiny Bronco (27:10-27:42), so it makes sense that this piano conclusion implies that Cloud and Aerith aligned, but not yet reunited for good. Thatâs exactly what you get from the ending cutscene. It does seem to imply that they will be reunited in part 3, as both the ending cutscene and this piano conclusion read as a âtill we see each other againâ rather than a âfarewellâ.
VI. Textual Evidence
Now that the musical evidence is done, letâs compile some textual story evidence that supports our theory!
VI. a)
Remake Trilogy (Thus Far) Handholding Explained?
As Iâm sure youâve noticed, handholding is a motif in Cloud and Aerithâs relationshipâ and an extremely symbolic one at that! When researching for info to validate my theory, I found that this Clerith motif was extremely helpful! Its inclusion in the
Remake trilogy, and especially in
Rebirth, is hugely significant in my eyes.
VI. a) i. Pre-
Remake Trilogy: Aerithâs Initiative
Before examining the significance of Clerith handholding in
Remake and
Rebirth, we should establish the meaning of this motif in OG and
Advent Children.
Cloud and Aerith have reached out to take each otherâs hands many times since 1997. Aerith used to literally drag him by the hand a lot, shocking the cold and distant merc, before she left. After her death in OG, Cloud surely longed to be able to feel her hand take his again, cursing himself for not enjoying it while she was alive, and for never being the one to grasp her hand first: he never got to tell her how he feels about her, or to save her. It was always her reaching out for him, saving him.
This is why the scene in OG when Aerith reaches for him from the Lifestream after Cloud defeats Sephiroth in chapter 3 of disk 3 is so touching: Cloud sees her hand and reaches out to take it, so close to finally establishing that mutual connection, but she soon fades, and replaced by Tifaâs hand in the tangible world. He doesnât get to hold Aerithâs hand again.
That is, not until
Advent Children, where near the end of his battle with Bahamut Sin,
he sees Aerith reach out to him once again (1:08-1:30). Cloud finally gets to hold her hand for the first time in two years when he lost her. This moment was given extra importance by the devs. In fact, Nojima told us the following:
âThe ending scene of the battle with Bahamut, the scene where Aerith reaches out her hand, is an homage to the last scene from a previous production. It was [Nomura]'s ideaâ (FFVII Reunion Files, âStory Digestâ, âSummoned Beastâ, page 113).
VI. a) ii. The
Remake Trilogy (Thus Far): Cloudâs Initiative
As Iâve said before, if Iâm right that
Remake is all about Cloud stepping up to be more attentive and active in his relationship with Aerith in order to save her, there should be concrete evidence of this in the
Remaketrilogy thus far. If OG Cloudâs memories of and love for Aerith exist somewhere within
Remake Cloudâs subconsciousness, then
Remake Cloud should be far more active in the Clerith dynamic than OG Cloud wasâ after all, heâs supposed to know better this time around. Thankfully, the motif of handholding can help us evaluate this. Since we know pre-
Remake Cloud was quite passive when it comes to handholding, Cloud initiating handholding in the
Remake trilogy would be a strong indication that our theory has validity. Keeping this in mind, letâs see what we can find thus far in the
Remake trilogy in relation to handholding, and if Cloud is indeed more active than he was in OG.
VI. a) ii. 1) Hollow Hands
Remakeâs theme song âHollowâ makes allusions to the handholding motif: âThis time, I will never let you goâ is pretty clear. And so is âNo Promises to Keepâ, wherein Aerith speaks of Cloud â[taking her] hand and never [letting her] goâ multiple times. Interestingly, these theme song lyrics seem to suggest that Cloud will be much more active in the
Remake trilogy than in OG. âHollowâ even promises that Cloud will come to his senses and take charge of the situation: âthis time, [he] willâ be the one to offer his hand to Aerith, unlike in OG and
Advent Children. This makes a lot of sense with our theory: now that Cloud has lost Aerith once, âthis time for sure, [he]âllâ be the one to reach for Aerithâs hand, take initiative and save her the way she saved him.
Even though theme songs are extremely telling of a gameâs main themes and intentions, lyrics are still all talk and no proof. What about the game itself? Do
Remake and
Rebirth deliver on this promise? Letâs see!
VI. a) ii. 2) Resolution Hands
The only significant time Cloud initiates handholding in
Remake is during
Cloudâs resolution scene in chapter 14 (5:18-5:40), wherein he tries to grab Aerithâs hand but is unable to keep her with him. He fills with determination and tells her in no uncertain terms that heâs coming for her. Just as we predicted, Cloud is the active participant in this iteration of the Clerith handholding motif: heâs even explicitly insisting against Aerithâs wishes that he should âget a say in all thisâ and that heâs âcoming for [her]â. Letâs not forget that Cloudâs resolution is meant to reflect not only Aerithâs kidnapping by Shinra, but also her fated death. Nojima implied this by commenting the following on Aerithâs âEven if you think you have, itâs not realâ line:
âThose who know what befalls Aerith later on will find the line really heart-wrenchingâ (FFVII Remake Ultimania, section 08 âSecretsâ, âDevelopment Staff Interviews, Part 2: Tetsuya Nomura, Yoshinori Kitase, Kazushige Nojimaâ, page 744).
Given this note by Nojima, it looks like weâre supposed to watch Cloudâs resolution scene with Aerithâs fated death in mind. Considering this, Cloudâs âIâm coming for youâ line sure seems like an subconscious promise that he will save Aerith from her tragic fate. This subconscious promise could be the result of post-OG Cloudâs feelings and intentions rising to the surface. Nevertheless, heâs absolutely determined and heâs staying true to the promise he made in âHollowâ. I think itâs fair to say that this instance of the handholding Clerith motif does indeed fit perfectly with our theory. This is only one strong example though, and we need a pattern in order to pat ourselves on the back on this. So, letâs keep looking! There isnât any handholding initiated by Cloud beyond that point in
Remake. At this point in my research, I moved on to
Rebirth to go digging for handholding there.
Hoo boy. I was not disappointed.
VI. a) ii. 3) Golden Hands
Letâs begin with the obvious. In their high-affinity gondola date in chapter 12, Cloud bravely interlaces his fingers with Aerithâs: Cloudâs taken charge not only of handholding, but the most intimate kind of handholding. Iâm sure youâve encountered the phrase âăăăłăšă€ăȘăâ or âkoibito tsunagi by now (literally translates to âloversâ tieâ or âloversâ connectionâ); this is the term used in Japanese to refer to the type of handholding Cloud initiates with Aerith on the Skywheel. Itâs considered the most intimate form of handholding. In Japan, skinship is normally considered quite significant and indicative of the closeness between two peopleâ you could say itâs a big deal. Cloud also offers Aerith his hand when they step off the Shywheel, once more making the first move. Though some might say that the Skywheel dates shouldnât be counted as canon, I believe Aerithâs date is indeed canon (I have my reasons but this post is long enough). Even if we discount the Skywheel date however, Clerith's use of the koibito tsunagi returns in a non-optional scene we will touch on later.
For what itâs worth, Alfreid offers Rosa his hand in the
Loveless play too. I can prove that Aerith is the canon Rosa too, but Iâm going to save that for my next analysis! You can take my word for it now, or just wait for that analysis to drop. Take it or leave it!
VI. a) ii. 4) Meta Hands
However, the narrative weight of these Clerith handholding instances doesnât even come close to my very favorite iteration of the handholding motif in
Rebirth. Iâm referring to what I consider a severely underrated Clerith moment in chapter 13. First, some context: Sephiroth manipulates Cloud into giving over the Black Materia. Cloud seems to be firmly under Sephirothâs control. However, the sight of Aerith being swarmed by Black Whispers snaps Cloud back into the driverâs seat: he breaks out of Sephirothâs grasp to run to her and save her. Aerith gets knocked off into a fatal free-fall by a Black Whisper before Cloud can reach her, but he wonât have it: he lunges forward, hand extended. What results is
a beautiful shot of their outstretched hands (56:25-56:27).
Letâs analyze this great shot. Notice how the seconds where Cloud is reaching downwards to grasp Aerithâs hand are treated. This key moment is stretched longer by a slow-mo effect, building up the tension and drawing the audienceâs focus to the distance between their hands before Cloud actually catches Aerithâs in his, fulfilling the promise he made in âHollowâ. Their hands take up the whole screen in a deliberate close-up shot. All the ambient noises of the scene go quiet: Aerithâs theme is all we hear as Cloud reaches desperately for her. These are blatant audiovisual cues, signalling to the audience that whatever is happening on screen is especially significant. We should therefore examine this specific instance of the Clerith handholding motif to see what the devs are trying to tell us, and maybe it will fit with our theory!
We should begin by comparing this Clerith hand-reach shot to previous ones. If you compare it to the
Advent Childrenâs hand-reach that occurs during Cloudâs battle against Bahamut Sin, itâs evident that Cloud and Aerithâs roles are reversed: just as our theory states, Cloud gets out from inside his head and reaches for Aerith this time. She saved him and the world in OG, and now itâs his turn to save her. This change becomes especially evident when you juxtapose the two scenes and notice how their hands have switched places, reaching from above and below, from left and right. I think the
Rebirth hand-reach was deliberately made to look like the
Advent Children one âand even the OG one in disk 3, chapter 3â, just to highlight this role reversal.
This
Rebirth hand-reach is my favorite out of all because it shows that Cloud is much more conscious and attentive toward Aerith in
Rebirth than he was in OG. At this point in OG (disk 1, chapter 25), Cloud is meant to be beating Aerith up at Sephirothâs command, to the horror of the rest of the party. In fact, a few minutes before Cloud rushes to save Aerith in
Rebirth, he has absolutely no problem
violently shoving Tifa to the ground when she gets in Sephirothâs way (53:27-53:33). This shove and Cloudâs earlier attack on Tifa in Gongaga (
Rebirth, chapter 9) proves that Sephiroth is just as capable of making Cloud hurt his party members as he was in OG⊠though Sephiroth canât seem to make Cloud hurt Aerith. Why is this? Why is it that Cloud beats Aerith in OG, but doesnât even lay a finger on her âand snaps out of Sephirothâs control at the mere sight of her in troubleâ in
Rebirth?
Our theory provides the answer. In disk 1, chapter 25 of OG, Cloud had not yet realized he loved Aerith. Sephiroth was therefore able to make him hurt her. But things are different in
Rebirth. The Cloud we see in the
Remake trilogy has gone through the OG timeline and traveled back in time, kicking off
Remake as his second try at the OG timelineâ and he did this precisely because he loves Aerith. His love for her is clearer and stronger in the
Remake trilogy than in OG because
Remake Cloud is an amnesiac, post-OG, time-traveler Cloud. Heâs been through the OG before, has fallen in love with Aerith and realized it before, so this time around, he canât even lay a finger on her. This is made evident by how closely the moments where Cloud pushes Tifa and saves Aerith are juxtaposed, separated by mere seconds of gameplay. Merely seeing Aerith in trouble wrenched control from Sephiroth and put it in Cloudâs hands againâ Sephiroth probably couldnât have gotten Cloud to attack Aerith if he tried.
This isnât the only time we get evidence of this though! As Cloud approaches Aerithâs praying form in the Forgotten City, Sephirothâs Black Whispers swirl around the buster sword: Sephiroth is trying to kill Aerith with it, while Cloudâs struggle to wrench it away plays out visibly on his face. Interestingly, Cloud is not being controlled by Sephiroth here. We know this because we can quite literally see the Black Whispers trying to move his sword, but also because every time Cloud is being controlled by Sephiroth in
Rebirth, he has an empty-eyed, zombie-Cloud look on his face. Either that or he laughs or smiles somewhat maniacally. There is never any resistance on his part. To see an example, simply pay attention to Cloudâs blank face
as he attacks Tifa in Gongaga in chapter 9 (19:20-20:30). Youâll see the very same expression on his face if you watch this video of
Cloud following Sephirothâs orders in chapter 13 (53:36-54:15). Additionally, look at how strangely Cloud smiles (41:01) as he grasps the Black Materia. Cloud makes none of these faces as the Black Whispers try to take control of his sword: quite the opposite. Cloud looks like heâs trying his hardest to pull his weapon back down and away from Aerith, a horrified look on his face as he grunts from the effort. Once more, Sephiroth is unable to make Cloud hurt Aerith.
Back to my favorite handholding moment. Think about this devs intention for this shot for a minute. The devs have been teasing us as to whether or not Cloud will succeed in saving Aerith in the
Remake trilogy since it was first announced, and this slow-mo shot of Cloud catching Aerithâs hand as she falls to her death is a reflection of this tension. The audience holds their breath during those slow-moed seconds, all that hope and fear hanging in the balance. This instance of the handholding motif is a meta way for the devs to reassure us that Cloud will indeed save Aerith. I firmly believe this.
VI. a) ii. 5) Self-Sacrificing Hands
Alright, alright, enough about my favorite! Letâs move to chapter 14 of
Rebirth! Thereâs evidently a lot going on with Clerith in this chapter. Letâs address the Sector 5 date. The handholding is first initiated by Aerith
as she tugs him toward the candy vendor and Cloud reacts with a quiet gasp (4:07-4:17). Soon, it becomes a reciprocal embrace: Cloud holds his hand out for Aerithâs and tightens his fingers around hers, smiling at her before they head to the photographer (7:07-7:17).
Then of course, when Aerith pushes Cloud into a portal in her church, you can see Cloud reach his hand up toward her desperately as he falls (17:38-17:58). What I find particularly emotional about this moment is that Aerith pushing Cloud away from her is kind of the opposite of reaching for his hand: it symbolizes Aerith accepting her fate and giving up on a life where she can be with him. This Aerith seems to be a post-OG Aerith who exists separately from the main world we experience in
Rebirth, meaning she knows all too well that her fate is to die. In fact, it looks like she is the very same or a similar Aerith to the one who appeared to Cloud in his resolution scene in
Remake. By literally pushing Cloud away, just like she figuratively did in Cloudâs resolution scene, she is sacrificing both herself and the happiness she could share with Cloud. Sheâs going against her heartâs wishes, just like she did in Cloudâs resolution scene when she would not let Cloud take her hand. Indeed, post-OG Aerith seems to be resigned to her fated death and completely devoid of hope: she only wants to ensure the planetâs survival, because she thinks she knows there is no way she can or should be with Cloud. In contrast, Cloud reaches his hand out toward Aerith as he falls into the portal, and even though he does not know that her push symbolizes her self-sacrifice, his outstretched hand represents his protest. So far, our theory is fitting beautifully.
VI. a) ii. 6) Grieving Hands
Later in chapter 14 of
Rebirth, after Aerithâs death/non-death, there is more handholding. As Cloud cradles Aerithâs body close to him at the Forgotten Capital, Aerith places her hand on his cheek.
Cloud covers it with his, curling his fingers around it (1:03:33-1:03:53). Before he leaves her lying down on her back to go fight Sephiroth, he squeezes her hand as he tells her âI got thisââ or, per the Japanese version, âWait for meâ, meaning heâll reunite with her once heâs done (1:04:56-1:05:10).
VI. a) ii. 7) Hero-Heroine Hands
Next, the koibito tsunagi returns as Cloud and Aerith interlace fingers back to back in a classic hero-heroine pose, right after their two-versus-one fight against Sephiroth. This time,
they both reach for each other simultaneously (7:42-8:18), without even having to look down at their hands or talk to each other, as though perfectly in sync. As you can see, Aerith and Cloud are now on the same page. This is different from post-OG Aerithâs attitude in the Sector 5 church earlier in chapter 14, as well as in Cloudâs resolution scene in
Remakeâ my interpretation of this mutual koibito tsunagi is that both of them are agreeing to hold onto each other now, with neither of them pulling back or being inattentive of the other: their priorities are now the same. It seems now they are aligned, and hopefully this means that Aerith will be working together with Cloud so they can reunite again in part 3. Even if she doesnât prioritize her life and happiness though, we know for sure Cloud will.
VI. b) Blocking Masamune Explained?
Another piece of evidence that Cloud has been through the events of OG before is the fact that he is able to block masamune. Cloud looks up and sees Sephiroth descending with his blade poised to kill Aerith. Screaming, Cloud instantly rips the buster sword from the Black Whispersâ hold and successfully blocks masamune. Hatred and determination fill his eyes as he rallies his strength and successfully pushes Sephiroth away,
saving Aerithâs life (6:00-7:26)â at least, in one reality.
Obviously, something about Cloud is different in
Rebirth from in OG, otherwise, the events of
Rebirthâs chapter 14 would be the same as the events of OGâs disk 1 chapter 28. In my opinion, what happened here is that upon seeing Sephiroth swoop down with masamune, Cloud remembered Aerithâs death in OG, and the post-OG Cloudâs determination to stop it came surging up from within him. This is frankly the very best proof there is that Cloud is far more ready, stable, determined, and clear-headed about Aerith in the
Remake trilogy than in OG. Our theory explains why! In fact, this very moment is what our entire theory banks on: Cloud saves Aerith in one reality, as is shown by the rainbow effect produced by the event, and just like that, the promise made in âHollowâ has been fulfilled! However, now we face the question of how to make sure that Aerith is alive and by Cloudâs side when the multiverse converges again into one protected timeline. Iâm sure it will be done; we will see how in part 3.
VI. c) Theme Song Lyrics
What the theme songsâ texts have to say about the trilogy so far is quite important, as they summarize the feelings of the characters they represent: Cloud and Aerith. We can glean a lot from their perspectives that could help support the Mission Theory.
VI. d) i. âHollowâ Lyrics
âHollowâ,
Remakeâs theme song, was written about Cloudâs feelings and rumination. Nojima confirmed that, when he was given directives for the lyric-writing, âNomura just gave [Nojima] the keywords: âtold from Cloud's point of viewâ and âstanding in the rainâ. [Nojima] interpreted that as âa ballad for a man who lost something/someone importantââ (Nojima and Uematsu interview ââI wanted to put the word âemptyâ in the theme song of
Remake. That was how it startedâ - Music-Related Interview Part 6: Kazunari Nojimaâ, by
Famitsu). Our theory is about Cloudâs motivations and mission to save Aerith, so âHollowâ is especially relevant.
Letâs run through the lyrics and analyze, starting with the songâs first verse:
âI would be lost, drifting along
Floating up high, time after time
And there you'd be, shining brightly
Your smiling face to guide my way
Bloody and bruised, brought to my knees
When beaten down, when broken up
You would appear, reach out to me
Heal every wound and make me wholeâ
Makes sense with our theory in mind, doesnât it? This is post-OG Cloud remembering Aerith and what she means to him. âHollowâ seems to be told from the perspective of the post-OG Cloud hidden somewhere in
Remake Cloud: a suppressed or eroded part of him that remembers Aerith clearly. Or maybe itâs told by Cloud after the events of the
MFF x FFVII Remake collaboration and before the start of
Remake, asserting his mission to save Aerith.
