Estoy recien mudado y tengo distancia y paredes entre my PC y modem.

Hello all. I just started my home server experience for the first time on a NUC9VXQNX Pro. All my previous servers have been on full size machines and have never had issues with PCIe slots since they’ve all had plenty x8 or x16 slots. However, this NUC only has 2 PCIe 3.0 slots, which is a x16 and x4. In the x16 slot I’ve got an LSI 9300 running with no issues. For the x4 slot, I’ve been trying to install a dual port SFP+ nic since I do have a 10Gb network running with other equipment. Since this x4 slot has an open back and all these dual SFP+ ports come in an x8 form, I’ve read multiple posts that state it should work based on the required bandwidth.
For the life of me, I cannot get any of the nics to be recognized and I’ve tried 4 different nics at this point. First 2 cards were PCIe 3.0 x8. My 2 recent cards are PCIe 2.0 x8. Besides maybe a defective x4 slot, am I missing something else here?
Reposted from nuc since there was no traction there. I appreciate any assistance!

Hi!
I recently came across a video from Nordic Semiconductors in which the guy powers on the nRF and it connects using a cellular modem automatically. Here is the video: Cellular made easy with nRF9160 DK (youtube.com)
Is it true? I don't need to perform any configuration on nRF 9160 DK? If it's not, I'd appreciate is someone could point me toward a blog or guide. Thanks

2024.05.14 05:52 jangwao LTE modem for failover in Europe

Hello, I've got UDM-SE and we have fairly traffic and few times in non prime time I've noticed that single mode gpon optic modem from ISP just went black few times and had to been power rotated.
I'm looking to get an LTE backup modem or mobile router, but it seems out of stock for a longer period.
Can you suggest a shop where they still have in stock in Europe? I couldn't find any and US has different frequencies.
Any idea whenever will be in stock or what alternative do you recommend to take which is compatible?
Optional, I have Ubiquity gateway with SFP so I can think of taking single mode module but not sure if ISP would co-op on that?
Thanks for any hint.
Edit:
Found this D-Link but worried about power supply, best would be obvious PoE

2024.05.13 13:15 Roeloyo10 Seeking Advice: Running SQL Server on Windows Server in a Virtual Environment

i'm currently in the process of upgrading my ICT infrastructure. One of the key aspects of this upgrade is migrating the local SQLite database to a Windows Server with SQL Server capabilities.
I am using my server to store files on for a small 3d cad drawing business. We use AutoDesk as the provider of the drawing tools. They also offer AutoDesk vault. That only runs on windows server.
However, I'm exploring the possibility of running Windows Server and SQL Server within a virtualized environment, such as a virtual machine (VM). Unfortunately, the router provided by my ISP, offers limited security options, making it difficult to ensure robust protection for our digital assets. I am not planning on buying a new router.
I'd appreciate any insights or recommendations from the community on the following:
  1. Is it feasible to run Windows Server and SQL Server within a virtualized environment, such as a VM, or is that uncommon to do en just install windows server directly on the disk?
  2. If so, what would be a good platform to run it on? I have experience with unraid and i like the VPN feature. That omits opening up extra ports, buying a new router with vpn support etc.
  3. What are the potential security risks associated with running SQL Server, and how can these risks be mitigated?
  4. Are there any specific security measures or best practices I should implement to safeguard the digital assets, considering the limitations of the ISP-provided modem?
Your expertise and advice would be incredibly valuable to me as I navigate through these challenges. Thank you in advance for your assistance!

2024.05.13 05:41 fatpandadptcom Connect 3rd party router to CenturyLink PPPoE fiber ONT

This configuration only works with CenturyLink PPPoE via an ONT with VLAN ID 201. You will need to get the WAN MAC Address from the CL modem so plug it back in to th ONT if it is disconnected and go to the Modem Status tab. You'll also need to locate your CL account number which you can get from your centurylink.com profile. I changed my "Default" network on the Unifi machine to 192.168.0.1 in frustration and it worked however, I'm not sure this is necessary. So if the steps below do not work then try change it. If you skipped the Mobile App and configuring in Internet settings 1. If you have configured any security settings or profiles make sure you disable them 1. DNS Shield was blocking CL from providing access. 1. Turn off suspicious activity. 1. Remove any honey pots Before you apply any of these settings. The gotcha is that CL requires you to run through their setup tool before they will connect you. So make sure you are able to pull up link provided on a phone or device that will have external internet connectivity. Do this before you hit "Apply Changes". If you do not know your PPPoE username and password then start with the link below. Provide your account number and service zip and start the Wizard. You will be provided your PPPoE settings. https://setup.centurylink.com/quickconnect/Activate/en/Modems/ModemConfig.aspx 1. Go to the settings menu and click on "Internet" 1. Select the Primary WAN 1. Check "VLAN ID" and enter "201" 1. Check "MAC Address Clone" and insert the MAC address mentioned above 1. Select the "PPPoE" radio button and enter username and password 1. Check "DNS Servers" to "Auto" 1. Pull up the link above user your account number and service ZIP to start. 1. Run through the Wizard, if you get stuck at the PPPoE settings page the following trouble shooting helped. 2. Re-paste your username and login and try save the WAN settings again, once saved reload the CL tool. 2. Unplug/restart your ONT and wait until the lights on the port are showing link and the green light is flashing. 2. If you haven't got it working with these steps then update your "Default" network subnet to 192.168.0.1/24. 2. Use the CL DNS servers 3. 205.171.3.65 3. 205.171.2.65

2024.05.11 15:11 chessset5 To the user on the netgear forum

Original question: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Cell-Service-Mobile-Hotspot/Nighthawk-M6-Pro-Hotspot/td-p/2327394
My response:
I am going to preference this that I made this in a insomniac stupor from 4am to 6am.
Also there is a far cheaper solution to this setup if you go down to the bottom in the final notes.
The Orbi system would work for you, but I think just running wires would be a far better solution.
And if you have COAX (TV LINES) running through the property your setup can be done even cheaper.

For background I am a junior network technician, and I have setup networks for family, friends, and enterprise in all kinds of situations from rural to tower apartments.
Personally I would advise you contact a network technician to setup the location for proper coverage and reliability, but in lack of on-site technical support, I will provide a layout you can follow if you wish to continue doing the setup yourself, or have not done the setup already.

This is a similar setup I did for my cousin's Barndominium, I will be referring to it as barn for short.

Equipment

Nighthawk® M6 Pro Mobile Router with Antenna
https://www.netgear.com/home/mobile-wifi/hotspots/mr6550/
We will be using this for your internet connection since I am to the understanding that it is what is used on ATnT's first responder network and since it has an ethernet jack passthrough.

Suction Cup hangers/mounter (if installed indoors at window)

Used to mount antenna on the inside window.
You can also use tape if you want, this will not leave residue.
This was the first kit I found on amazon when searching "Suction Cup Mounts"
You may discover a better solution to mounting the antenna than this, I am putting this here as an option.

RBK864S — Orbi Tri-band Mesh WiFi 6 System – 860 Series
https://www.netgear.com/support/product/rbk864s/
We will be using this for the main networking of your barn.
I also chose it since I have heard good things about its Mesh system and because this was the item you made your original post on.
I personally prefer TP-Link systems, but this will work the same.

APC Back-UPS 450VA, 120V, 6 NEMA outlets (2 surge) (OPTIONAL)
https://www.apc.com/us/en/product/BN450M/apc-backups-450va-120v-6-nema-outlets-2-surge-battery-is-not-user-replaceable/
This is for ensuring the Orbi units have power in the event of a power loss. You can still have internet for a few hours before it actually goes down.
One batter per Orbi location. Or at least a unit at all the critical locations.
Note that these have to be replaced every few years, but having that redundant power supply is important for internet uptime. Generally cellular and internet services have their own power grid so they should stay up in the event of a power outage. Buying these will ensure your wifi stays up too.

Planning
Read through the entire instruction set and make a plan.
Measure twice, cut once; is the best practice when setting up a network. You can't really go back, you have to start from the beginning every time.
Make sure you have enough outlets for when you are going to install the devices.
Making diagrams of the placement is always best.
Even a rough sketch can help you save time in the future and help you keep track of what you are trying to do.
homenetworking on reddit is a great place to go to ask questions on this sort of stuff.
https://www.reddit.com/HomeNetworking/

Mobile Router

Placement of the Mobile Router
Starting off with the Nighthawk® M6 Pro Mobile Router (Mobile Router).
General rule of thumb, the higher the window, the better, so if you have multiple floors, the top floor is the best floor.
Note that electronics also hate getting hot, so the room the Mobile Router is installed should also have cooling.
Cooling is a bigger factor than height.

In this setup the Mobile Router will not be designed to move.
Start Placement Option 1: Install Indoors near Window
Assuming your barn has windows.
Find the window that is closest to the ATnT tower or gets the best signal.
Install the antenna on the window.
You can achieve this with suction cups or tape.
Start Placement Option 2: Install on a wall and do not drill through the wall.
Find the side of the barn that is closest to the ATnT tower or gets the best signal.
Place the antenna up as high as possible on the wall.
Tape it or screw it into place.
Start Placement Option 3: Install on a wall and drill through the wall.
Under the assumption you know how to properly drill holes through walls.
Make sure there is nothing on that can intrude the holes or you may drill into.
Make sure to not have the hole near power lines.
Make sure to not install the antenna near power lines. This may degrade the signal.
Would advise using putty or some other filler when finished.

Find the side of the barn that is closest to the ATnT tower or gets the best signal.
Find a place to put the Mobile Router, drill a hole from the outside big enough to pass the cables from the antenna through close to the location of the Mobile Router.
Install the cable on the outside, feed it inside.
Finish Placement
Route the antenna cables into the Mobile Router.
Ensure the Mobile Router has power and its SIM card installed.
It is advised to have the Mobile Router out side of the direct sunlight for this can degrade performance due to the sun being the sun and can head up the device causing thermal throttling in the device to stay cool, so put it off to the side if possible.
Again make sure the room it is in can stay cool. The closer it is to optimal temperature, the better performant it can be. Note if it gets too cold it can shut down. Also note that the room it is in should not be humid. Humidity can kill electronics, even if sealed.

Mobile Router Setup
Find the routers user manual.
For the Nighthawk® M6 Pro Mobile Router, it can be found here:
https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/MR6500/MR6500_MR6110_UM_EN.pdf?_ga=2.20578744.1249255028.1715421878-937367102.1715421878
Would highly advise reading it over once.

The plan is to make it used as a data entry point, similar to how a modem would work. We are not going to use it for wireless signals or network processing. It is just going to pass the signal along to the Orbi system.

Make sure the Mobile router is plugged in.
If you bought the APC batter backup unit, plug it into the backup unit.

Connect to the Mobile Router via your phone via the app or use the touch screen,
below are touch screen instructions
use your best intuition for the app.
User Manual Page 18 to connect via the app.
You can also connect via the web application on your laptop, but note that we are disabling most of the connectivity settings that would allow you to connect via your laptop and possibly the app; hence why I am emphasizing the touch screen method; so chose your setup methods at your own digression. Again I will give instruction via reference to the touch screen in the manual.

Put the Mobile Router's power mode into Plugged IN.
User Manual Page 40

Disable Mobile Router Wifi
User Manual Page 38

It may be prudent to add a screen lock, I'll leave that up to you
user manual page 41

Make sure that Ethernet is enabled
User Manual Page 50
This should be turned on when you put the Mobile Router into Plug-In mode but it might not enable automatically.

Enable IP passthrough
User manual page 51
99% sure the user manual is incorrect on the setup, but find something that says IP Passthrough and enable it. If you can't find it, I guess set roaming to on.
This will be used to allow for the Orbi to work on its own and not need any funky setup.

There are far more settings to enable/disable to get the most optimal setup, but for now this should be good enough to get everything working.

Orbi Stations

Placement - Orbi Home Station
Place Orbi Home Station by the Mobile Router
The Home Station is the node with the yellow port. The other Orbi station are just AP nodes also called satellites.

Orbi Home Station Setup
Power up the Orbi Home Station
If you bought the APC back up unit, plug it into that.

Read over the manual found here
https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RBK863S/RBR860_RBS860_UM_EN.pdf
https://www.netgear.com/support/product/rbk864s/#docs

Pass Internet cable from Mobile Router to Orbi Home Station yellow port.

The setup will be just like any normal router setup, from this point forward.
I’m a bit tired so I am not going to add this section, lmk if you need help on this.

Placement - Orbi Satellites
Place each one with 2 wifi bars on your laptop or phone. 1 bar might not be enough signal and can get wiped out by people walking about.
The Satellites can hop off each other. So let’s say you have one on the far side of the property, it can jump from one satellite to the next to the next and hit home. It does not need a direct path to home.

Final Notes

You can also achieve a cheaper and better result if you just use normal routers like a TP-Link Archer A7 and just put wire everywhere. So one Archer A7 in router mode at the Mobile Router, run a long ethernet cable to the other side of the barn, put another Archer A7 in AP mode. And bobs your uncle you have full coverage.
If you have coax cable (TV CABLE) you can use that instead of the internet cable and use a MOCA converter instead. Less work and hassle if you have COAX running around the property. This is what I use on my property.
I have APC backups on all the routers and AP connections.
During black outs we have a full 23 hours of internet before we go full black out.
Works like a charm and costs a whole lot less than 1.3k.

If you give me a layout of your property, I can advise you on a much more specialized and cheaper option for you put it will take some time for me to draw up.

But ultimately, I would greatly advise having a network technician come out and look at your setup. Any junior technician could do it.

Lmk if you have questions.
-Aaron

    • NIC: HP NC364T PCIe 4Port Gigabit
  • SuperMicro SuperServer 847 (Name: Vaulty)

Hypervisor setup:

I have 4 VMware ESXi hosts with a total of 320ish GB of RAM. I have them all connected to the switches and talk with TrueNAS over ISCSi. TrueNAS have 4 ports in each switch and each ESXi Host have 1 port in each switch for ISCSI. I don't have any 10GB right now and I am not in a hurry as of now. Also each ESXI host have 1 port in each switch for management, vmotion and VM networks.
I have VMware 8 Enterprise Plus license along with a license for vCenter 8.

Storage setup:

I run TrueNAS SCALE and I use it purely for storage. I have no apps running on this machine. But I have tried a couple to get the feel of it.
TrueNAS have two clear tasks to perform, which is ISCSi for my VMware setup and then a SAMBA share, for which all of my mine files and media goes to.
I have alot of ports in my SuperMicro server and 8 of them is used for ISCSi. This might have worked better with 10GB interfaces, but I am not there and in no rush as well. The 8ports are configure into 2 x 4 Link aggregation, with each of these Link aggregrations plugged into one of the two switches to create an "active/active" ISCSi setup for VMware. So everything will be running, even if one of the switches are down, like for maintenance.
AND finally, I am fully aware that my storage is bottlenecked by my network speed as it is right now.

Backup setup:

I run 3 Veeam backup servers (Free edition, 10 workloads each), which could translates to 30 VM backups. I don't have a true 1-2-3 solution in place as of now, but what I do goes as follows:
  • My Veeam servers take backup of the VM's and place the images onto my SMB share on my TrueNAS.
    • Each Veeam server have OneDrive installed and used a symbolic link from the SMB share to the OneDrive.
      • This will trigger OneDrive to upload the files to the cloud.
    • Each Veeam server have its own OneDrive account, which have 1TB of capacity.
      • I have a office 365 familiy subscription, where I have some leftover licenses. So why not use them?
  • I have 7 days retention for my virtual machines.
    • I perform restore tests, whenever I feel like it.

Services:

I'm still somewhat new to using and the management of containers. I use docker, which I have installed on multiple Ubuntu VMs.
as of writing this, I have the following services running:
  • Plex
  • TP-Link Omada Controller
  • Sonarr
  • Radarr
  • Lidarr
  • Prowlarr
  • Protainer
  • qbittorrent
  • AdGuard Home x 2
  • AdGuard Home Sync
I want to have more containers with services to self-host, but I am not in a rush. I also need to learn how to update these images and then afterwards find an automated solution for this. I am thinking Anisble.
Other services I am running, but not in a container, but in virtual machines:
  • GitLab
  • HomeAssistant
  • PRTG
  • Windows Admin Center
  • Microsoft IIS Server
    • Hosting a HTML page, which keeps track of Windows Server Evaulation licenses and when to re-arm these. Also keeps track of how many re-arms each servers have left.

Purpose of my homelab:

Two things primarily! Services and honing my skills, to pay them bills. I want to host many more services and I believe with time, I will get them up and running. Again in no rush, but when I learn more of how to handle container and such, I am sure more services will follow right after :)
The other purpose is to learn, like I believe many of you use your homelabs for selflearning. For my jobs I have been working as System/Server Adminstratior along with VMware Management, with heavy usage of Windows Servers and other Microsoft products. This also included alot of automating. Back in the november 2023, I scored a new job position as an Infrastructure Engineer, where the focus would be on "IaC" also known as "Infrastructure as Code". Since I am coming from a world of Data Centers with alot of hardware and now have to work in the cloud on a VMware Cloud Director platform, then this is all new to me and I would like to use my Homelab to get better at stuff like GIT, Terraform (OpenTofu) and Anisble.

Things for the future:

I would like to update some of my servers to run 10GB networking, but as I stated earlier, I am in no rush for this right now.
Next piece of hardware, I would like to buy, is a NUC or something like that. This would be so that I can turn off the rack and still have AdGuard and other services running, while the rack is powered off.
I also want to buy a UPS for my rack, since I dont have redundant power to the rack. I live in a area, where power outage is very rare and only happened once or twice in those 4 years I have live, where I live now.
For the fun of it, I would like to get a 4G modem/Router, which I would like to use as a backup line for my TP-Link Router, which can use multiple WAN connections. But this is merely a fun project, that I may never get around to do.

The end, of this post:

If you reach this part of my post, then I would like to thank you for taking the time to read it :) But now I will stop writing and try to find my bed.
Thank you all for this great subreddit :)
Pictutes of my hardware, enjoy :)

2024.05.10 23:06 Stormblaster98 Cannot connect to home network but can connect to internet

So I recently installed wg-easy but when I connect to the vpn I'm still unable to access my vm containers. I can connect to the internet, but I can't access my home network server (for example the wireguard web ui) Here's my docker run:
 docker run -d \ --name=wg-easy \ -e LANG=en \ -e WG_HOST=xx.xx.xx.xxx\ -e PASSWORD=xxxxxx -e PORT=51821 \ -e WG_PORT=51820 \ -e UI_TRAFFIC_STATS="true" \ -v ~/.wg-easy:/etc/wireguard \ -p 51820:51820/udp \ -p 51821:51821/tcp \ --cap-add=NET_ADMIN \ --cap-add=SYS_MODULE \ --sysctl="net.ipv4.conf.all.src_valid_mark=1" \ --sysctl="net.ipv4.ip_forward=1" \ --restart unless-stopped \ ghcr.io/wg-easy/wg-easy
WG_HOST is my public IP when I search "whats my ip" from my main network computer. I forwarded the port 51820 UDP, I set the allowed ip's to 192.168.1.0/24 which aligns with my devices on my network, DNS is default 1.1.1.1
Note: I am using a modem/router combo, however my router is in dmz from the modem so I dont think that should matter.
My wg0.conf:
# Server [Interface] PrivateKey = Address = 10.8.0.1/24 ListenPort = 51820 PreUp = iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -j MASQUERADE -o eth0 PostUp = iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 10.8.0.0/24 -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE; iptables -A INPUT -p udp -m udp --dport 51820 -j ACCEPT; iptables -A FORWARD -i wg0 -j ACCEPT; iptables -A FORWARD -o wg0 -j ACCEPT; PreDown = iptables -t nat -D POSTROUTING -j MASQUERADE -o eth0 PostDown = iptables -t nat -D POSTROUTING -s 10.8.0.0/24 -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE; iptables -D INPUT -p udp -m udp --dport 51820 -j ACCEPT; iptables -D FORWARD -i wg0 -j ACCEPT; iptables -D FORWARD -o wg0 -j ACCEPT; # Client: MacBook (8df...)
