Hi, sorry if this genre of question has been answered a billion times, but I've scrolled thru the sub and checked out links in the wiki and still feel unsure.
I'm trying to figure out if I might have dyscalculia, or something else wrong with me to explain why I'm bad at numbers, and struggling to find any easy enough to follow list of symptoms/diagnostic criteria to try and figure it out myself. I'm sure there's no way for me, as an adult, to get properly evaluated, and not sure there'd be any benefit to it if I could that would make costs worth it anyways, but I would really just like to figure out what's wrong with me.
It basically comes down to: I cannot read numbers in order, I constantly miss mistakes while proofreading numbers, but generally I would consider myself good at math - algebra, physics, even calculus - just bad with simple arithmetic.
I've been unable to read numbers in order for as long as I can remember. I mix up 8's and 3's (they look alike to me), I'll swap the orders of digits when reading number constantly, I'll repeat them back wrong out loud even if I'm understanding them right in my head, etc. I can't proofread numbers to save my life, which is affecting me at work. Yesterday it took me 10 mins to figure out how to call an Uber bc I was typing my own address in wrong and not noticing, even when looking at it written out correctly in front of me immediately before typing it into the app. This is really the main issue - my inability to read numbers in order or notice errors when I repeat/write them incorrectly. This is the core thing that bothers me, and actively feels like some sort of disability.
Additionally, I'm pretty bad at simple arithmetic. I took a long time to understand multiplication tables, I don't think I ever fully grasped long division, etc. Regularly to this day I use my fingers to do addition and subtraction. I would use a calculator for literally everything if I could.
But everything I'm seeing says if you're not bad at math, you can't have dyscalculia, which is leaving me very confused. Because although multiplication and addition are harder for me than I feel like they should be, they aren't my core problem -- I can do them well enough to function (although I'm also a grown adult and not a kid in a math class). And understanding mathematical concepts has never been an issue for me -- in fact I've always liked it. Algebra was easy for me. Geometry and precalc were kinda hard, but I think in a normal way. I took AP Calc AB in high school and understood it conceptually very well, although I'd regularly make mistakes in specific equations. I took two years of physics in high school and a semester of physics in college -- all very math and calculus oriented -- and did perfectly fine with them. I really struggled with Calc II in college, but I feel like that's not a red flag in and of itself, and was the exception, not the norm, for my experience with higher level math.
So long story short, I hated math in elementary school, but once I was in high school and college and learning more conceptual stuff, I never felt like I struggled more than normal and I genuinely enjoyed learning it! Which seems fundamentally incompatible with dyscalculia, from what I've read.
For additional context: I have other symptoms that align with dyscalculia -- I cannot read an analog clock without actively thinking about it for several minutes, I used to mix up left and right for way longer than was normal (although I stopped once I got my drivers license), I'm noticeably worse than my peers at estimating things (particularly distances, # of people in a crowd, or $ raised/spent). Some things that I've read are symptoms but that DON'T affect me is sense of direction or ability to understand a map (I'd say I'm better than average at that actually), ability to memorize things like dance routines, or ability to understand/sightread music or memorize fingerings (I was in orchestra at a serious level even throughout college and never felt like I struggled w anything like that).
Anyways, I understand y'all aren't professionals, but I'm wondering if, with the context I've provided, you can provide me any guidance on how to understand if I might or might not have dyscalculia. The constant mixing up of numbers is such a big issue in my life right now and I'm just trying to understand if this is actually something wrong with me or what, if any, resources I can use to help deal with this better in my day to day life.

Has anyone noticed changes in self care, lifstyle or just straight up appearance changes when you started working with lilith or have for a while?
I have! I noticed when I first started that I was very standoffish about anything girly, I didn't want anything to do with my femininity and felt it was to cliche. (Btw before hand I dressed like one of thoes cringe anime kids and smelled like booty cuz I didn't take car of myself. OH! and my hair, was messy and frizzy and never brushed. I was a stupid sophomore in High School! give me a break😭)
Than, when I started my journey in witchcraft and she called out to me, over time I've felt more confy in my skin, I love my femininity and I take good care of myself, my skin and my hair! My hair used to look like a large mushroom cloud fuzzball, now it's uniformed, curly, a bit frizzy but that's just the way my hair is and it's thick. It no longer looks like a mushroom cloud lol and I keep it longer than I used to. Also I got curtain bangs and they compliment my type of hair.
I also feel as though I know more about myself and am open to new things! I'm still not the most girly but not because I hate girly things. I just enjoy an equal amount of masculine and feminine activities, clothing, Etc....
Has anyone experienced anything similar in their life??? I hope this isn't silly, I just wondered❤️

What do the words 'settlement'/'settlers' mean in the state of Yisrael and what are the words being used in Hebrew? I'm still learning and so can't read Hebrew news articles.
In the United States and in other Western countries, these words have implications of guilt and wrongdoing. They mean going to someone's land you have no connection to and taking it from them. Like when Europeans went to another continent and stole land from other people.
Jews living in Yehudah and Shomron (Incorrectly referred to as the 'West Bank') are not 'settlers'. This was originally part of our land. This is as strange and factually incorrect as if the Cherokee tribe in the Americas or the Maori in Australia decolonized and reclaimed their land but were being referred to as 'settlers' by white people.
It's basically like if someone attacked you and you defended yourself but kept calling yourself the perpetrator and confusing people. Or if someone stole your jacket and you ran after them, grabbed it back then started calling yourself a thief.
Note that I'm NOT talking about whether you personally agree with Jews living in Gaza, Yehudah, and Shomron. I'm asking what those words mean to people in Yisrael and what the Hebrew words you use in reference to them are.

Following up on my previous thread.
tl;dr; I am still satisfied with my purchase and will consider another Blazer EV in the future.
Mechanically, the Blazer EV is great. It drives nicely and handles well. Coming from a Chevy Volt, the turning radius is surprisingly similar for a vehicle about a foot longer and wider. It doesn't feel like driving a tank like other SUVs.
The software, aside from bugs, is a mixed bag. The UI could use a redo. It feels like too much form over function. The use of space is questionable, and some of the touch buttons are small enough that they aren't easy to press in a moving vehicle. The screen is so large, but with so much empty space, it could have been smaller, and nothing would have been lost.

Stop Sales, Software Updates, and Recall Updates

• The February update caused my wireless charger to stop working randomly, and the recall update didn't fix the issue. I have seen the same complaint in CadillacLyriq, so it must be some software bug with the platform.
• The Recall Update took about two days to complete. It fixed several minor bugs, and Ambient Lighting is working now.
• The downside of the Recall Update is it introduced a new software bug. The charging door no longer closes after 30 seconds. Even after disconnecting the charging cable, the green light on the dash still pulses.
• Chevy could have communicated more effectively about the stop sale. After the fact, it was a software issue, but I wasn't sure if it was a mechanical issue at the time.
• I still haven't received an OTA update (if one is even out). I am worried because dealer-installed updates seem complicated, and an OTA update may brick my vehicle in my garage.

Software

• As far as I can tell, there have not been any significant updates to the software or new apps added to the market.
• The entire package still feels like a downgrade from Android Auto as it will not display messages from Google Chat, Discord, or Messenger.
• I don't know the roadmap or what features are coming, but the software is still the Blazer EV's weakest point.
• This is a hard sell for the software as a service subscription model.
• When using the cameras, I wish the screen would zoom in a bit more. The UI needs more space for such a large screen.

Rebate Check and New Pricing

• I received the rebate check for the new price difference within two weeks. Chevy deserves credit for a goodwill outreach.
• The new prices make a lot more sense and distance the Blazer EV from the Lyriq enough. It also better aligns with other mid price EVs.
• I am still slightly salty about missing out on the Ultium Promise rebate because I purchased the Blazer EV in December. I had no way of knowing that deal was coming.

Interior

• The piano black panels are just the worst. Around the cup holders, I have a few faint scratches despite being careful with microfiber cloth wipe-downs. I would pay extra money not to have these in a future vehicle.

Accessories

• Basic accessories, like a console organizer or cargo cover, are still missing. Third-party vendors like BestEvMod have them available, but I'm not really sure what Chevy is doing.
• There is an official Tesla charger adapter coming from GM. It seems like Chevy should have gotten on the ball after Ford did theirs.

New Options

• The dealer order site added Super Cruise in March, but it isn't an option on the customer's website. That package also includes the Enhanced Parking Assist, which I am disappointed that the parking assist wasn't included in the RS trim.
• The Ambient Lighting is just for the tabs on the air vents. I wish there were more substantial lighting options like my Volt had.

Things I would like to see in a future Blazer EV

• There should be more interior color options. All black is boring, and the red is a bit much for me. Maybe a dual-tone grey/black.
• There should be more options, such as stereo upgrades, Super Cruise, sunroof, etc. I am sure that will be resolved in the 2025 models.
• The RS trim with 102kwh battery on all motor configurations. The 85kwh should be for the LT trim.
• The RS motors performance upgrade. For a "Rally Sport" it is a little slow for an EV.
• Eliminate piano black or glossy surfaces on parts that are touched often.
• Camera upgrades. The dead zone in front of the car still feels janky. The front camera position makes it hard to park even with guidelines. While parking on an incline/decline, the 360-degree cameras get visual distortions.
• I would like more position adjustments on the steering wheel. I am slightly tall, and the wheel obscures part of the instrument panel for me.

But ya, as expected, the subtitles by those Chinese streaming services (WeTV(Tencent Video)/iQIYI/YOUKU/MangoTV/etc.) are often machine-translated as well with these variety/reality shows (and Cdramas). The 28th Combined Arms Division’s main goal is to provide a positive experience for all, regardless of skill or experience. We are primarily an ArmA unit but we have grown to become a community of close knit friends and colleagues.

Our leadership staff, active and retired, have spent hours creating an organized and fun environment for you to enjoy and experience MILSIM. The unit is based off of the US Army. We are an infantry focused unit, with armor and aviation supporting assets to help us complete the mission on the ground.

Under steady leadership and systems established based on facts rather than personal interpretation, all unit decisions are made impartially and follow a standardized process. We have combat veterans and enlisted members from real life armed forces currently rostered who work to help develop leadership skills within our community.

Application and Entry into the 28th
Join our Discord linked at the bottom. Upon entry you will be greeted by a recruiter who will lead you through our induction process, which includes creating an account on our website, filling out an application form, completing a meeting in our TeamSpeak with your recruiter, and finally, completing Initial Entry Training, which will consist of BCT and the 11B MOSQ. Once these steps are completed, you are officially recognized as a member of the 28th Combined Arms Division and are free to specialize with specific training.

Upon application and acceptance into the unit, members are required to complete 2 operations as an enlisted 11B Infantryman. Upon completion of 2 operations as an Infantryman, the member may request to transfer and train into our other specialized MOS’ listed below.

Why do we require you to enter as 11B (Infantryman)?
We use this system to streamline members into our more advanced MOS’. Spending 2 operations at minimum as 11B proves that you want to be integrated into the community, as well as providing you with the knowledge of our unit at the most basic but most important level.

This system builds prestige within our specialized MOS’, as well as raising the base skill level of our radio operators, pilots, armored crew and medics.If you choose to remain 11B, there is lots of opportunity for growth into leadership positions to help the unit and yourself grow as a leader.

Operations

Deployment Operations
The unit cycles through a Deployment and Field Training Exercise phase. Deployment operations consist of a persistent storyline throughout the course of 2-3 months to simulate deployments to various areas around the globe. Deployment patches can be found on the website linked below!

FTX Operations
Our Field Training Exercise operations will vary on terrain and story, as we use these scheduled days to provide a different and refreshing experience outside of our deployment storyline. They will either be just one-off operations or be a series based on a separate storyline from the deployment.

Side Operations are hosted every other week on Wednesdays and can include a variety of mods and storylines including WW1, WW2, Vietnam, SCP, Halo, and even Warhammer 40k!

But of context i guess I (14f) and my brother (17m) had a pretty shitty upbringing we had an abusive dad my parents divorced when I we were both too young to really remember my dad was never very violent but he was very emotional abusive I stopped seeing and talking to my dad when I was 7 due to a lot of reasons but that’s a different rant anyway after that my mum dated another abusive man he never really hit me but he did hit/ attack my brother a few times he more emotionally abused me my mum left him in November 2019 and ever since it’s just been us three my brother is very strong he’s only 5’9 but still a good bit taller than me and he’s a boxer me but I can hit a good punch as well we always argued and fought as kids but it was never really that violent kinda more pushing and wrestling anyway I’m not exactly sure when it started but I remember a few times he said some pretty shitty things to me and did some pretty shit things starting from 2020 when I was 10 my mum bought me this little short set it had a cropped hoodie that was black and shorts that were black I wore a black vest underneath and when my brother saw me in it called me a whore when he was 13 (I turned 14 recently and would never imagine saying that to a 10 year old or even thinking that about a 10 year old) and said that all I’m ever gonna be in life is a one time use for some one like Jeffery epstine this hurt me but like whatever he made me full on sob free he repeated called me autistic and “special” for over an hour and saying I was a mistake I’m not exactly sure when the violence started but I remember one time I think I was 11 he wanted the remote and I didn’t give it to him so he punched me in the face took the remote it hurt like fuck so I was crying and he told my mum I was crying because he took the remote and didn’t tell her he punched me I got called dramatic and emotional then whenever we would have a disagreement he started turning violent like basically squaring up to me if we were arguing in the car he would jump over from the front seat while my mum was driving and hit me like full on multiple shots to the face and trust me I’ve had enough punches to know they hurttttt! Like ur face and body is sore for days like multiple days when I came out as bisexual and asked to use she/they he called me a mistake and told me I’d be better off dead he called me a bunch of slurs and different shit and that went on for quite a while he doesn’t care anymore tho whenever we argue or if I do things like make a small mistake he will call me really shitty things say I’d be better dead tell me to kill myself say that he’s gonna kill me his favourite move is to chase me about the house and when I go to my room and push it shut basically push it in and hit me over small disagreements he’s basically reason why I’m insecure about a lot of things because he just basically calls every part of me ugly I think the thing recently is that he’s 17 he’s 18 in December he’s learning how to drive and like he’s too old for this bs like yk and I’m done with it in December we went to Cuba I’m Scottish and Scottish parents tend to be quite loose especially on holiday one night I get a bit too drunk and my mum tells me brother to take me home when I say too drunk I mean I am black out and the whole time we’re walking he’s saying shit to me and all this bs at the time I’m 13 and he’s 17 anyway when we get in I get very angry cause he went out for a smoke and I thought ogiht he had left me completely so very drunk me finds his favourite football shirt gets shampoo and put’s shampoo or body wash all over it I can’t really remember when he comes in he sees this and he goes mental he chases me to my room and hits me and then I’m on the bed and he starts choking me while punching the shit out of me eventually I get him out and I lock the door but he spends the full night outside the door calling me ever single name under the sun yeah I get I shouldn’t of done that but it was only body wash it comes out the next morning I wake up with some pretty nasty bruises and some marks on my neck the worse one was on my leg were he kicked me a couple times and it bruised purple for like 2 weeks the next day he acts like nothing happened like he always does somtimes I wonder if he genuinely doesn’t see a problem with his behaviour a few months later we’re arguing outside about somthing stupid and he shuved me hard I rarely hit him back when he does this shit but I told him “I’m gonna fucking hit you” he gets in my face and says “who the fuck do you think ur speaking to” he turns around I hit him in the r head so hard that his head went forward and his airpod fell out the other side he turns around and hits me 4/5 times in the face and a couple body hits we argue I go back inside he shouts for a bit but we move on today he squared up to me over something small and I told him to fuck off he chases me to my room my mum comes over he sorts it out and I tell her “I’m fucking done with this I’m not gonna live on eggshells because I’m scared of my own brother” and she’s like “I’ll talk to him” this pisses me off I’m like “no you’ve said that for the last three years if you don’t sort him out the next time he hits me or tires to I’m gonna fucking kill him I mean it” she talks to him he starts shouting at her and I’m like this can’t be normal surley but the thing is that when he’s not like this he’s a really good brother so it’s hard to not forgive him I’m so angry right now but in an hour he’ll charm his way into me forgiving him and no matter how hard I try I can’t I actually feel somtimes like he’s an abusive boyfriend that I can’t leave I mean I love my mum and my brother but it’s not like this is enough reason to leave them plus even if it was I have no where to go I have no family that would think what he does is wrong another thing is when my mums talking to me after he pisses me off tryna calm me down he stands behind her smirking trying to piss me off more

I am not in danger or anything but the place is jampacked with strange and familiar people, and the college is a maze.
It has been over 10 years ago since i graduated college. Why am I still having dreams about college. I recognize people i sort of met or seen in college and high school. Every time i enter a room, all seats are filled and people are taking test or about to take a test.
I dont freaking know where i am supposed to go. Because a teacher teaches multiple classes to different students multiple times in 1 day, they switch out the small room they usually teach for a big ass lecture hall for all 200-300 students they teach.
Example: Teacher teaches in a small classroom of 30 students 10am, another group of 30 students at 11am, another 30 students at 1pm, another 30 at 2pm, another 30 at 3pm, and finally another at 4pm. That is 180 different students. This forces the teacher to schedule the use of 1 big lecture hall that can seat 200-300 students for the final exam. I dont freaking know where it is.
That info about where the final exam takes place is posted on the blackboard website or what ever, in addition to the teacher informing us 1-2 weeks ahead of time. In my dream i can never get my phone or laptop to connect with wifi or get signal on phone and i dont recall the teacher announcing the room of the final exam. Worst is I dont even know what time i am supposed to take the exam.
I am running from class room to class room and lecture hall to lecture hall trying desperately to find the room I am supposed to take my final exam in.
I am struggling to run or walk. I cant move very fast. I see so many people in the hallway making it difficult for me to walk by or past them. I dont know any of them and asking them for help they simply shrug or say they dont know. The college i went to had multiple buildings spread out and most of the buildings was designed by stupid dumb fuck architects that make complicated ass building designs with confusing hallways and floor layouts. Why cant these dumb fuck architects just make a simple box building?
Anyways in my dream the rooms are even more confusing to navigate. I actually run through rooms to get to other rooms. It is so confusing. I try to read the door numbers and try to navigate but it doesnt even make sense. Room numbers dont follow a pattern. Worst is know i am in a building with multiple floors. It doesnt even matter as i dont remember or know the room number i am supposed to go to.
Even if i remeber the room i am supposed to go to or the internet works on my laptop or phone, i am still screwed as the final exam is on something i never studied or did not study enough. For example last night i dreamt i had to take a final exam in German. I dont speak any German. How tf am i supposed to even ace this test? Other subjects in math, philosphy, history, science etc... like oh shit i dont know or remeber anything man.
What does this even mean?
1] I am lost and do not know where to go. I dont know where i belong. 2] I cant ask for help. Nobody knows where i am supposed to go or be at. I cant find the answer myself as dream wifi and internet doesnt work 3] Even if i find my way there, i know nothing about the subject. I didnt study. I am going to fail. Came to rant slightly, but also to celebrate the closing of a chapter. Also, feel free to lmk if I sound like the asshole…
I made the mistake of signing on to a 1 year lease with someone I had only one, 10 minute FaceTime call with who is 3 years younger than me and had never lived on her own before.
In this FaceTime call she not only blatantly lied to me, she also failed to disclose several serious details.

1. She told me she had a car. Upon her moving in I not only discovered that she didn’t have a car, this girl didn’t even have a license, nor any sort of desire to obtain one.

We moved into a neighborhood that absolutely requires one to have a car to be able to navigate. It’s isolated and anything but walkable. We have a bus stop by our house but she had also never done a long list of basic things, like stepping foot on any form of public transport.

1. She failed to disclose until the lease was signed and we were moved in that she has (self diagnosed) agoraphobia. If you don’t know what that is, it’s basically a crippling fear of everything beyond the front door, where a person is terrified and intensely avoids public places and most people so much they avoid going out all together.
   
2. Neither of those things would’ve mattered to me but she also lied to me about being consistent in working and going to school. She premised us moving in together by telling me she had active hobbies, spent the majority of her time outside of the house working and going to classes. Leading me to believe I was moving in with someone who had a similar lifestyle to me. = alls to say she is a shut in. She’s been employed maybe 4/10 months of the time we’ve lived together and besides work leaves the house for nothing. Has stopped going to her classes even literally never leaves the house.
   

I quickly discovered that she does not function like a normal person and is a textbook hermit. She’s paranoid of everything, smokes weed every day and is unexposed to basic things in society. Things like calling our maintenance company or having a friendly conversation with our neighbors were out of the question. Her rude, paranoid and closed off conversations with our neighbors caused all of our neighbors to basically hate us.
She didn’t once take initiative in the apartment, I’ve had to explain VERY basic cleaning and maintenance things to her which she received as ludicrous and condescending.
She’s called me bossy and stubborn meanwhile begging me to direct her to basic household duties.
The first few months when I tried to befriend her she shot down every single one of my invitations, attempts to connect or hang out and then later accused ME of lying upon move in when I said I was also hoping to be friends with my roommate. She went months without asking me a single personal question as she used me as her own sounding board to spill her fears/ complaints and paranoia to since the only people she actively speaks to are me and her boyfriend. Then she accused me of being judgemental and critical when I offered her constructive advice on very basic complaints she’d come to me every single day with. She later explained that she wasn’t ever looking for advice but for someone to say boo hoo poor you.
She is a prisoner of her own mind and exploited me as 1/2 of her only inmate visitors.
I’ve sat down for hours, on several occasions trying to help her find / access a therapist some sort of help despite how she treats me and she’s come up with every single excuse in the book as to why she will not pursue therapy (she is studying to become a therapist, yet doesn’t believe it is going to help her situation). I’ve tried to offer her help, guidance and friendship but have been rejected at every turn.
She’s ignored me for weeks at a time despite the two of us sharing apartment together then pointed her finger at ME for not being friendly.
She has walked by me at school WHILE texting me and avoided speaking to me. Almost exclusively texts me from her room while we our both home and my door is wide open.
All I have to say now as I’m moving out and breaking my lease early is I’m so damn excited to leave this person behind. She will learn that others will not be nearly as easy to live with and hopefully she learns the hard way.
None of these things are inherently problematic but if you live with someone else should be disclosed upon move in. She lied so hard, both explicitly and by omission of these critical lifestyle details. I have never cared about how others choose to live their life but when it conflicts with mine in a shared environment, that is when it becomes a problem for me.
I’m so damn excited to live with someone who is friendly, communicative and occasionally leaves their room to engage with the outside world! Including me!
Pls let this serve as a warning/ lesson to not move in with someone you’ve never met. Also not to believe them.

Fletch gently pushed open the large and lavishly decorated bronze doors of the university administration building and ambled out into the portico. He set his cup of coffee down on the pedestal of a granite pillar and pulled his cigarette case from the breast pocket of his tan trench coat. The old chief inspector plucked a cigarette from the ornately engraved case with slender fingers and wondered why the Kael let him come at all.
Something felt very off with the whole thing. The more he thought about it, the more he questioned the story he got. Mike Anderson was certainly depressed, but as far as Fletch could tell, he had not displayed any suicidal behavior. And why now? Fletch thought. Things were on the upswing for the kid. His grades were excellent, his family situation was good, and he was out of the house more this term than the last. Fletch scratched his mustache. Why would the seals hide the autopsy and the gun? He brought the cigarette to his lips, snapped the filigreed case shut, and slipped it back into the breast pocket of his coat. Fletch flicked open his lighter and sighed as he lit his cigarette. Murder.
It was a hopeless case. These days, warrants were approved by the seals, and even if they weren't, he doubted that he could get one anyway. His suspicion of foul play was backed by nothing but his instinct.
Fletch watched students hustle and bustle through the plaza in front of him as he puffed away at his cigarette and pondered his theory.
But why kill him now? They could have done it in complete secrecy while he was a POW. And it couldn’t be to keep what happened in Philadelphia under wraps. His death brings more attention to it. And he wasn’t a rebel. So why? Fletch sipped at his coffee as he flicked ash from his cigarette. Vengeance? Did he kill some noble brat during the war?
Fletch scratched at his grey mustache and glanced at his watch. I’ll have to follow that thread. He tossed his half-smoked cigarette into a puddle as he briskly walked down the steps and through the university plaza.
The withered investigator was deep in thought when he entered the parking lot. What do I tell that Enrique chap? He unlocked his car and crawled in. I certainly can’t tell him that his mate’s been clipped with no evidence. Fletch turned the key, and the engine of his little Volvo sputtered to life. It’s no bleeding use. I’ll just tell the lad they weren’t interested in sharing and keep my suspicions to myself.
As he reached for the shifter, Fletch noticed a delightfully thick manilla envelope stuck in the gap between the center console and the passenger seat.
He pulled the envelope from the crack. Gingerly, he opened it and pulled out a small note. It read We’re even now, prick.
Fletch smiled and couldn’t help but mutter, “The game is afoot,” as he flicked through the stack of documents inside.
Isabella poked her head into the large office and saw Professor Dret’la with a ball of dark green yarn on her lap and bone darning needles beset with carvings in her hands.
Isabella was struck with confusion. What? She crochets!?
The professor looked up from her labor, spotted the confused girl outside her door, and called, “Come in.”
Isabella walked into the office and took a seat. She gestured to the yarn in the professor's hands. “What are you making?”
The professor smiled as motherly as one could with a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth. “It will be a hat for my son. He just received his commission as a junior biologist, so he has to rummage around in freezers to get samples for his whole research team.”
Isabella blinked. This was not characteristic at all for the quick-tempered professor with a penchant for launching chalk across lecture halls at the mildest provocation.
Isabella shook off her shocked expression and gave the tall professor a dimpled cheek smile. “That’s so sweet! I’m sure he’ll love it. One of the best gifts I’ve ever received was a thick wool sweater from my mamma during a training exercise off the coast of Norway.”
The professor, still smiling, sat up straight. “I hope that’s the kind of reception I get.”
The professor’s demeanor hardened as she stowed the yarn and needles in the desk drawer. “Now, let's get down to business.”
Isabella gulped.
“To start, congratulations. You’ve passed our testing and been selected for officer training.”
Isabella asked, “Who else was selected?”
“There are nine others: Robert Rhodes, Elena Pavel, Hal Jellico, Zheng Li, Brooke Halsey, Colow Aden, Magnus Tordenskjold, Bill Lee, and Kazuya Yamamoto.”
Isabella didn’t recognize all the names.
“Should you choose to accept, you will be taking a prep course taught by Colonel Ocidea and I starting next week and lasting all through the summer. If we deem you ready, you’ll ship out for basic training and then off to the Royal Military Academy, where you can earn your commission.” Dr. Dret’la leaned in close to Isabella. “Do you accept?”
Without hesitation, Isabella answered, “Yes.”
“Mike, come over here. You’re going to want to see this.” Calty voiced from her seat in the front of the cockpit.
Mike rolled off the couch and walked into the front of the cockpit as the captain shouted, “Decelerate!” Mike couldn’t help but grab onto the back of Calty’s seat as the FTL drive kicked into gear. The cockpit glass dimmed just before blindingly bright blue jets of fire from the front-facing engines came into view. A bright green circle flickered onto the glass surrounding a marble-sized dot darker than the rest of the now dim screen. The dots and circles expanded at an extreme pace until they took up most of the display. Another dot appeared—minuscule compared to the other—surrounded by a red circle. The growth of the shadowy dots and the circles around them slowed and then stopped entirely as the engines sputtered out.
The HUD faded out of view, and the tint of the glass slowly lightened, revealing a vast planet embraced by blue-green ice with a colossal foundry in its orbit. The planet, a gas giant called Drassus, was orbited by four rings. One was made of containers, and the other three were made up of loose ore gleaming in the nearby star's light. Exhaust chimneys spewing gas and fire sprouted from the otherwise spherical foundry, giving it a sea urchin-like profile, which, together with the weave of pipes bringing fuel from beneath the icy surface of the planet below, made the foundry resemble an old naval mine.
The captain strode up to the front of the cockpit. “One-third ahead and steer 14 degrees left. We’re unloading in bay three.”
Six mech suits and a tug exited a plasma-shielded hanger as the ship came to a halt. The mechs glided to the front of the ship and started dismounting the external cargo bay from the Broken Fin while the tug hitched onto the opposite end of the ten-kilometer-long rack of containers.
A little while later, the tug pulled away with the load of containers, and the comm system blared to life. “Broken Fin, you are cleared to leave. The UO corporation thanks you for your business.”
The captain replied, “Our pleasure. Broken fin out.” as the ship pulled out of the loading bay.
He turned to the navigation officer and said, “Lock in coordinates for jump to Kael Prime.”
The captain went to the central control board and pulled up traffic control. “Tower 1, this is the Broken Fin. We request a jump slot to Kael Prime from Drassus.”
“Broken Fin, request granted. Your departure slot is at 16:33.”
Mike glanced at the top right of the ship's HUD and looked at the time. 16:21.

The ship shuddered ever so slightly despite the inertial dampeners as it exited FTL. Mike was lounging on the couch with his bag at his feet. He was ready to get off this tub.
Mike idly watched flames lick at the cockpit window as the ship descended into the atmosphere of Kael Prime. He looked at Dreki, who was sitting on the other couch. His muscles bulged through his clothes despite wearing a white sweater so large it could be mistaken for the sail of an average-sized boat. Mike asked, “Do you know anything about what’ll happen to me now?”
The big Kael shifted in his seat. “Technically, I’m not supposed to tell you anything, but what the hell.” Dreki pulled the collar of his sweater down, revealing an angry white number burnt into his iron-gray skin just below the collarbone. “First, you’ll get branded.” He released his shirt and pointed to a small scar on the side of his head. “Then you’ll get an AR implant.”
“Where will I be getting that?” Mike asked.
“The Imperial Science Academy. We’re going to be staying there for a few days. They’ll run a bunch of tests and get you fitted for equipment there. After that, I’ll drop you off at the spaceport, and you’ll be off to Tlaxcalssus for basic training. After that, I don’t know.”
“Thanks.”
The ship shook as it touched down on the landing pad. “Time to go.” Dreki shouldered his pack and walked out the door. Mike fiddled with the straps of his bag as he followed Dreki down the ramp and to the far side of the ship, away from the rest of the passengers. Mike's nose was immediately assaulted with the acrid smell of sulfur from where the fiery exhausts of engines had melted asphalt. The spaceport was swarming with vehicles and filled with the constant roar of ship engines and a symphony of smaller equipment. Power loaders and mechs loaded and unloaded heavy cargo, shuttles bustled to and fro with passengers, baggage carriers snaked through the crowded landing pads, and vehicles that looked like floating garage doors zipped through the air at ankle height, bringing pilots and crew to their ships. Mike couldn’t help but chuckle a little at the absurdity of it all. Here he was, in the heartland of the enemy, walking through what was essentially a ten-acre parking lot.
Dreki plopped his bags on the ground and yawned as he stretched his arms over his head. “Our skiff will be here in a minute.”
Mike tuned out the beeps and whirrs of the tank-sized forklifts and mechs unloading the ship and gazed out beyond at the horizon. You’re not in Kansas anymore, bub. Mike thought as he studied the skyline of the imperial city basked in the glow of the early evening sun. Some of the buildings wouldn’t look all that out of place on Earth, but the skyline was assaulted with abominations that pissed on the laws of physics as Man understood them. Tusk-shaped skyscrapers defied gravity with their seemingly unsupported curves, and even more absurd were pyramids stacked atop another point-to-point like hourglasses. Any delusion of normalcy that Mike could come up with was shattered.
Dreki picked up his bag and pointed to a slab of black marble speeding towards them at ankle height. “Here’s our skiff.” A railing popped out of the center as the skiff came to a gliding halt. Dreki boarded the skiff and took hold of the rail, and Mike followed suit.
They sped through the spaceport and stopped outside what looked to Mike like a train station. Dreki shouldered his bag and stepped off the skiff. Mike stepped off and quickly fell in pace with Dreki. The big Kael led Mike into a grand station bustling with people. Most were Kael, but there was a smattering of other species. Some stared at Mike, others glanced, but most completely ignored him as he followed Dreki through the hall and onto a platform. Unfamiliar aliens clearly weren’t an uncommon sight here.
The walls of the station were covered with mosaics depicting Kael warriors from the distant past. Dreki noted the human's curiosity and said, “The founders of the clans.” He leveled a massive hand toward an opulent, towering mosaic of a Kael warrior wielding a bronze falx. The imposing figure's body was made of blue gemstones, the eyes rubies, one tusk silver, and the other gold. “That’s the founder of my clan, Drekalla Gold Tusk.”
Mike asked, “How’d he manage that?” As he followed Dreki into a mostly empty train car.
Dreki plopped down on a bench. “He was the war priest of Hroptaug the Conqueror during the unification wars. After the wars were won, Hroptaug granted us the Steam Hills.” Dreki pointed through the train window at the mosaic of another warrior whose body was made of milky white pearls. “That one,” He paused and spat on the floor, “Tiblan the Terror, challenged Drekalla to a duel for most of that land. Drekalla was cutting him to pieces, but the craven poisoned his blade. Just before Drekalla could deliver the final blow, the poison reached his heart, and Drekalla died. The only wound on his body was a cut across his forearm that barely drew blood.” Dreki rolled up his sleeve, showing a scar that reached from his elbow to the middle of his forearm. “Every K’alla is cut the same way to remind us of the blood feud.”
Mike inwardly sighed. Kael and their damned feuds… “How long ago was this.”
“Seven thousand four hundred and fifty-one years ago.”
Mike held back a snort. The absurdity of it all. The first human law codes came about to stop blood feuds, and out here, they have feuds that have lasted longer than Earth's recorded history.
“How’s that feud been going as of late?”
Dreki’s face sagged, “Not good.”
They both grew quiet. Mike shuffled uncomfortably.
Mike glanced at the route display and broke the silence, “What's with the middle city, inner city thing?”
Dreki relaxed slightly. “Oh, so the city used to be a fortification. The inner city is actually a volcanic island. The middle is built over the river, and the outer city was built on the banks.”
“I see.”
The doors closed, and the intercom sounded, “Next stop, the inner city.”
Dale Robert’s wrinkled face was unreadable, and his highly decorated black and blue dress uniform immaculate as he led a horse through the street. He felt the eyes of thousands of onlookers on him, and he hated it. The pure black horse had a black leather saddle on its back. Two tall, glossy black boots were placed backward in silver stirrups, and the elaborate hilt of Mike’s basket-hilted broadsword jutted from the top of a black leather scabbard buckled to the saddle. Roberts followed the horse-drawn caisson bearing the flag-draped coffin of his old commanding officer. Not much farther now, he thought. The sounds of the cartwheels rolling and the horse’s tack jangling were wholly drowned out by boots stamping the ground in unison. Almost all of the 1800 survivors of the 801st regiment were there, resplendent in their dress uniforms, marching behind Mike one more time. The local police and fire departments joined them.
Roberts was unsure about it all. He felt that the poor kid's family would have preferred a smaller service back home in Colorado instead of this damn near royal procession. And Roberts was damn sure that the seals did not give their permission for this, no matter what the police chief said.
A reporter ducked through the police barricade and tried to ask the marching soldiers questions, but they remained stone-faced as the procession marched nearer to the gates of Philadelphia National Cemetery. Roberts handed the reigns of the riderless horse to another man in uniform and joined seven other members of Charlie platoon in pulling the casket from the cassion. So I have an ITF that is still valid until May 22nd on the VA website. I went to my accredited representative and they filed a new claim on my behalf. I figured that my ITF of May 22nd (which is within 1 year of my separation date) would be what was used.
Fast forward to current day and I got a decision letter saying that my ITF was January of 2024, which is when I got on with my accredited representative. I assume the VA used the ITF my representative filed instead of the one I have on the website for some reason.
Why would the VA not use the earliest ITF that exists? Is the VA at fault here? Before anyone asks I have already contacted my representative but haven’t heard back yet. Has anyone experienced this?
