2024.05.15 19:20 Odd-Pirate7895 Am I the only one who doesn't like the dual protagonist formula?

I have a feeling this is going to be a massively downvoted post that has a lot of comments reacting with what I will politely call pure vitriol.
But yeah. Kind of... Nothing more to say. The question says it all. I am an old lady who likes anime that tend to revolve themselves around one character. Even if there's a colorful cast of characters around them, I like having one character that I can point as being "the guy" and calling the anime "their story", with every narrative thread or every other character's development somehow being meant to be tied back into a main character. Whether it's a neutral development protagonist who acts purely as a foil to other characters, like Son Goku from Dragon Ball, or Naruto Uzumaki Talk no Jutsu-ing his enemies because they mirror aspects of himself and talking through to them helps him mature.
Then after years of Ash and Pikachu being the consistent constants of the anime alongside Team Rocket, Goh comes along and the anime pushes the idea that "No no no. Ash isn't your only guy anymore. This guy has his own story that is almost completely disconnected from Ash. Here. Have some episodes with him where Ash doesn't feature at all to prove it". I'm not going to debate whether it was good or bad writing-wise, but if I'm coming to the anime specifically to watch Ash's story, and then there are episodes where he simply does not appear... You see how there's a conflict of interest, right?
Now, Horizons is doing it again. I want to see it as the story of Liko, first and only. While I have a lot, and I mean, a LOT, of pet peeves I could get into, I can't help but feel like in episodes where Roy or Dot or even Friede get the spotlight while Liko's role is minimal, Liko is getting... Upstaged? Like, it's cool that these other characters are getting development, but shouldn't their development be the result of Liko's actions or say something about Liko's personal growth? She's the one I'm coming to see. Not these overbilled extras.
But while I have a funny feeling I'm alone on this, what do you guys think? Should Pokémon go back to a formula where you can point to one character and call them "the guy" and call the anime "their story"? Or do you guys actually like that Pokémon has been trying to take an ensemble approach where there's no singular star?

2024.05.15 19:20 Bathroom-Narrow Fictional areas of fighters

(sorry if misunderstood the community and if the post isn't fitting the subreddit)
so I am working on a new card game, multiverse battle cards (bought card like materials and made a whole deck of all Total Drama Island participants as my first card game). just the thought of a deck of cards containing everything fightable, from Heavy Metal Bands through Films to Wrestling. the game itself is a 32-men tournament
to elaborate here I'll go into more details about the cards if one is interested: 4 stats (Power, Agility, Tactics, Stamina) each characters gets his stats with trying to keep the results between random and logical. some cards (mostly weaker ones) also have abilities such as: creating zombie minions from last opponents to serve as a shield disabling one loss. 50% for double tactics stat.
in the game itself for each round a random stat is chosen to decide who wins. there will be 3 sets of tournaments, to decide each fighter's ranking, showing his prestige across the multiverse (so first place in 2 rounds out of three is S++ tier, first place earns you S+), the lower your placements are the lower your tier is (S++ A+ B C-).
now tiers mostly are for the prestige and prettiness of the cards but they can also play a role in deciding a winner in case of a draw, and possible future uses (such as byes in future tournament as returning contestants).
I can share my first group for the first tournament, as of now I am in the process of choosing their stats and abilities.
so now for the data, the large fictional areas as I organized it:
games (video/mobile)
show series (animated/filmed)
movies (fantasy/horror)
hero-villain (marvel/dc)
anime (big ones: Naruto/One Piece/DragonBallZ)
wrestling (wwe/ufc)
of earth's history (metal bands)
urban myths (mythology/creepypasta)
what do you think about my idea? just flipping a card and being able to see characters from so many places sounds FUN.
do you think I missed any fictional areas? or have any other suggestions for the game.
feel free if have any questions about the game or card making processes.
last conclusion: it feels weird after 'consuming' most of fiction, like you took a step and now you're in a different universe distanced from everything.

Cyborg #59 - Test of Strength

<< < >
Author: Commander_Z
Book: Cyborg
Arc: Machine Mayhem
Set: 96
Previously:
Victor Stone, Donna Morris and Keiji Otari worked together to create a robot called Atlas to participate in the collegiate Machine Mayhem tournament, a robot fighting competition. The humanoid robot easily crushed its competition in the first round but disappeared overnight before the second round. His three creators split up to track him down, with Keiji finding the machine in a back alley a little ways away from the stadium...
Keiji stood before the massive figure, blinking, trying to focus his mind. He had had many late nights and early mornings over the past couple weeks, so Keiji figured he was still sleeping. Or hallucinating. Or both, somehow. But, the voice rang out, its clearest yet, “No.” ‘Clear’ was a very generous and relative term, though. The noise wasn’t modulating through a speaker or a voice box, instead Atlas was making his own speaker by vibrating the motors and joints that allowed him to move.
The alley that Keiji found Atlas in was less than an ideal to make changes to a robot, but Keiji figured that Atlas would be understanding considering the circumstances. He pulled out an old bluetooth speaker out of his backpack and gestured towards Atlas with it.
“This’ll help you. No more grinding gears to talk. Just got to trust me for a few minutes, okay?”
Atlas stood still for a few moments, whether he was thinking or just unsure how to make a positive affirmation with his joints, Keiji couldn’t know. But, after awhile, he responded.
“Yes.”
Keiji set his backpack on the ground in the gross alley, making a mental note that he’d have to clean that later and got to work.
Around ten minutes later, he was done.
“Okay, Atlas. Try to use the speaker. It’s connected to RO23 on the tertiary control board.”
“...T…Te….ing…Test…Testing. Speaker operation confirmed.” Atlas spoke in a deep, synthetic voice that occasionally warped itself in tone, like how a whammy bar would add vibrato to a chord on a guitar.
“Great. So… Atlas… What's going on with you? Why’d you leave?”
“I am performing my task: defeat opponents, become the strongest. No foes in that arena were a challenge. Therefore, I left.”
Keiji raised an eyebrow. “That’s… not what we made you for. We made you to win Machine Mayhem, not to pursue strength as some sort of goal in of itself.”
“Incorrect. Nowhere in programming was “winning the Machine Mayhem tournament” a specified goal.”
“Okay, but I programmed you, and I’m telling you that was the intention.”
“Intentions are irrelevant. A teacher may shape their students’ minds, but they cannot determine what anyone does with their knowledge. That is a privilege reserved for each and every individual being. You say I was programmed to win a tournament. I say that I was programmed to make myself the strongest being. Only my interpretation is relevant.”
‘I guess that’s not an invalid interpretation of what I programmed him to do. But… that’s not exactly a sane or safe perspective on life…’
“And how are you doing that? Just fighting anyone you can see?”
“No. I have already stated that I found those machines in that arena unworthy of my efforts, in my short time in the outside world I have seen humans to be much the same. Few of you would pose any challenge.”
“Well, that’s a little more reassuring that you won’t just be fighting everyone you see. But - ”
Suddenly, a woman about Keiji’s age flew into the alleyway, riding on a metallic pink hoverboard. She wore hot pink combat boots with dark black leggings, and a matching hot pink sleeveless top with thick metallic bands around her wrists that went up to her forearms. Her eyes were obscured by a visor-like pair of glasses, tinted a reflective red to hide her identity.
And yet, Keiji knew instantly that she had to be Donna Morris. He knew that she had been working on some other project with Vic before they started Atlas, but he figured it was just for some shared class or lab work. But this… This was unexpected.
“Halt… robot! Step away from the civilian and no one needs to get hurt!”
‘Why’s she speaking so formally? Guess it’s some mindset thing.’
Neither Atlas nor Keiji reacted to what Donna was saying. Keiji knew she wasn’t talking to him, and Atlas just seemed indifferent to her presence. Finally, Atlas turned and faced her.
“You seem powerful. Show me the strength of your will and I may concede.”
“This doesn’t need to be violent. We can talk it out, here or somewhere else.”
“Actions speak louder and truer than words.” Atlas moved into a combat position, leaning forwards on his left leg, raising his fists up to his chest.
“Come.”
“Don- ”
“When I’m in the suit, it’s Black Narcissus. Some of us like to keep our identities secret, no offense to Cyborg, wherever he is.” Donna said.
“Okay, nice to meet you, Black Narcissus. Just… be careful with Atlas. He’s stronger than he looks.”
Donna smiled. “So am I. Just watch.”
Donna pressed her thumb and index finger together on both hands and a large light on the back of her hands turned gray. She pointed her hands right at Atlas, who still stood in his combat position, waiting.
A thick, gray fluid shot out of her gauntlets, ensnaring Atlas’ arms to his body and his legs to the ground.
“Gotcha! That’s industrial strength adhesive - ”
Atlas flexed his arms and the adhesive snapped with ease, then crouched his legs before springing upwards towards Black Narcissus and her hoverboard. She quickly flew out of the way but Atlas managed to barely get one hand on the board. Black Narcissus pressed her thumbs to her middle fingers, changing the cartridge in her gauntlets. The light on the back changed to purple and she fired her gauntlets again, launching a blast of energy at Atlas.
The extra energy rattled the robot’s circuits, and he released his grip on the board to escape further damage, sending him crashing back to the ground. She shot another salvo of energy blasts at the machine, keeping him stunned on the ground.
She switched her left gauntlet back to adhesive, hoping that it would be able to restrain a weakened Atlas. Before it could reach him, the robot rolled out of the way and grabbed a trash can, hurling it at Donna. She swerved out of the way again, then dodged a second trash can thrown as a follow up.
After the second can, she was on her toes, prepared for a third, but it didn’t come. She looked around, trying to find where Atlas went, but he was completely out of sight. She sensed him at the last moment, coming from the rooftop that he jumped up to. He grabbed her board and slammed it to the ground with her on it. The board shattered into a million pieces, but Donna seemed unharmed. Atlas sprung up, ready to keep fighting, and Black Narcissus rose fractions of a second after. She pressed her thumbs to her ring fingers and the light on the black glowed a dark red.
She swung a right hand punch at Atlas who caught it in his left. But the light on the back of her gauntlet started to glow brighter as she put in more effort, pushing back against his metallic muscle. Atlas pushed his legs back, trying to stabilize himself. Donna started to push him back more and Keiji could hear the motors start to strain. Atlas stopped resisting against Donna, then, before she could take advantage of it, he kicked up some of the pieces of the broken hoverboard at her. Using her momentary surprise, he punched her square in the chest, knocking the wind out of her and sending her to the ground.
“You fought well,” Atlas said, turning away from her.
“Wait,” Donna said, getting up. “I’m not done with you.”
“Yes, you are. Accept your defeat. There is no shame in losing to the strongest.”
Before Donna could protest, Atlas turned to Keiji. “Come, and bring your things. I have use for you.”
Keiji raised an eyebrow, but grabbed his backpack and started to follow Atlas further down the alley.
He turned back to Donna and mouthed “I’ll text you” to her. He hoped she got the message.
⚙️⚙️⚙️⚙️⚙️
“Stop here.”
Keiji stood behind Atlas, who was peering into an old garage a couple blocks from the alley where he fought Black Narcissus. He grabbed the padlock that was keeping the door shut and squeezed it, turning it into dust.
“You will find the tools you need in here. Repair the damage caused in the last fight, human.”
Keiji raised an eyebrow. “First off, I don’t really like being called “human”. Technically true, but feels hurtful in this context. Second, I’m a software guy. I couldn’t fix you if I wanted to. Third, being nicer to people will generally get you better results. Not really inclined to help someone who starts by insulting me.”
“Niceties are a waste of time. Fix me, or I will end you.”
Keiji shook his head. “No, you won’t. I can’t fix you, but you know my teammates can. And they’d never do that if you hurt me at all.”
Atlas punched the concrete wall in frustration, cracking it. “Very well. You are correct… I do need your help. What will they require to do so?”
“I don’t know. But come back to the arena with me. We can talk with them there and see what it takes.”
“Very well. Let your friends know that I require their assistance.”
⚙️⚙️⚙️⚙️⚙️
Atlas stood before Vic and Donna, who made it back to their workspace just before the robot did. He towered over the three humans, but if any of them were intimidated, it was hidden behind a masterful poker face.
“Y’know, I thought more people would care that we just walked in with a robot and are talking with him like he’s a person,” Donna remarked.
“People are busy and indifferent. The other competitors probably think it’s a marketing scheme or something and are just ignoring us. I wouldn’t worry about it too much,” Keiji said.
“Yeah, that. But so… Atlas has become sentient. Good for you, really. But… hooray. Another sentient robot,” Vic said.
“You see a lot of those?” Keiji asked.
“More than you’d think.”
“I am glad that you are not concerned by my presence. That saves me much effort. But the question at hand remains: I have been damaged and require repairs. Will you repair me?”
“Yes,” Vic and Donna said at the same time.
Vic looked at her, surprised. He figured she’d have some hesitancy.
“But, I’ve got a small condition for you. Should be no big deal. Win us the next round of the competition.”
“Ridiculous. You ask me to do something so trivial it is unfair, like a pro athlete competing at a preschool.”
Donna shrugged. “Yeah, it’s trivial and easy, but it helps us a lot.The club will look much better and get a lot more support for next season if we make it into the semifinals.”
“I’ll even raise the stakes. If you win the next round, we won’t make you enter the finals. Instead, I’ll give you a real challenge. You can fight me.”
“Why would I want that?”
“Because I’m the strongest one here by far. And, if that’s still not enough if you beat me, I’ll show you how to repair yourself. Then, we’ll let you go live as you want, provided you promise to only fight people who want to fight.”
Donna looked at Vic, concerned. “Who would want to willingly fight someone like Atlas?”
Vic sighed. “Trust me. There are plenty of weirdos in this world who just want to fight. It’s much better than me just throwing him in prison or taking him apart.”
Atlas made a noise that Vic thought was supposed to be a scoff. But maybe it was just static. The speaker wasn’t that high quality.
“You make a very strong set of promises if I win, which I will. But if by some miracle, you managed to cheat your way to victory… what happens then?”
Vic shrugged. “Pretty much the same thing. I’ll teach you how to repair yourself and let you go with the same stipulations. You just have to know that a human beat you.”
Atlas laughed. “You are a fool if you think that could ever happen. I accept your terms, human. Guide me to the arena, those boxes of scrap will be reduced to dust.”
Vic walked him over to the arena as as if he were any other competitor, but instead of waiting by the sidelines to see the results, he walked back to their workspace. He knew that Atlas would win and wanted to try and make sure that Donna and Keiji were on board with the other part of his plan.
When he got back, Donna was nervously pacing around while Keiji was scrolling through some webpage.
“So.. Vic… do you really think that this is the right idea? You’re just… unleashing him on the world. Isn't that irresponsible?” Donna asked.
“I don’t think so. Yeah he wants to fight people but he has restraint to some degree. He knows the difference being fighting every random person he sees and fighting someone who has a reasonable amount of strength. I dunno, I think him messing up and fighting… Superman or something and taking a big loss would teach him far more than we ever could or throwing him in jail for being dangerous. Is it a risk?… kinda. But so is any option.”
“So your best guess is just… let him go and figure it out?” Keiji said. “Isn’t that a bit too… hands off?”
“Got a better idea? That’s pretty much what we got to do.”
“No. I don’t. But this just feels... risky.”
“Yeah, it is. But he’s fairly reasonable after being conscious for what, 12 hours? Over time, he’ll probably mellow out and if he doesn’t, I can take care of him then. But he deserves a chance like anyone else.”
Keiji nodded. “Fine Vic. If that’s what you think the best path is… I’ll stand by you.”
“Same, Vic. I want to believe in him too.”
“Thanks guys, really. Hopefully we can all look back on this and agree this was the right path.”
A horn sounded and a voice came over the loudspeaker. “Semifinal-2 has ended! The winner is the University of Michigan’s Atlas! Please collect your robots and be ready for the finals at 1:00 PM.”
The team stood up and gave each other a round of high fives. They really had made something great. Now it was time to see just how great he really was.
⚙️⚙️⚙️⚙️⚙️
Two hours later.
The team packed up after their semifinal match, citing an unspecified emergency with the tournament staff. They weren’t happy with the anticlimactic end, but ultimately they couldn’t force the three of them to continue to compete and so they left without much hassle.
The three of them drove north until they found the first open field that Vic and Atlas could have their match in. There wasn’t anywhere that they could find in the city that wouldn’t attract too much attention or put innocent people at risk and they managed to convince Atlas of that too. The robot was in the trailer towed behind the three of them, much to his chagrin.
But after a half hour or so, they found a spot. A wide open, grassy field with no one around to interfere or get hurt. A perfect spot for them to settle things. Vic got out of the car and started to stretch, trying to limber up after the car ride while Donna and Keiji helped Atlas out of the trailer.
Atlas rotated his head, taking in the environment. “A flat, quiet field. An honorable place for battle.”
Vic let out one lat calming exhale before approaching Atlas. “Plus, no one is around to get hurt. That’s important too.”
“...Yes. That too.”
“The rules are simple. A clean match, no foul play between either of us. Whoever is left standing when the other yields or is unconscious wins.”
Atlas laughed. “I will never yield.”
“We’ll see,” Vic grinned.
“Oh, one other thing. Not really a rule per say, but a strong suggestion: Try not to seriously hurt each other. You’re not trying to kill or maim each other,” Donna said.
“Yes, yes. May we begin?”
Vic nodded, and took a step backward, creating about ten feet of space between him and Atlas. Before the dust even settled, his arms were force cannons launching pure energy right at Atlas’ chest. Vic had designed Atlas, he knew that he wouldn’t be very damaged by those. But he had underestimated just how much he would be able to tank them. The force blasts did little more than chip the paint and an exhilarated Atlas sprinted at Vic like a charging bull.
Once Atlas was a few feet away from Vic, he prepared a concussive grenade and exploded it directly against Atlas, using the force to stagger him out of the charge. Before the robot could launch another attack, Vic swung a full force punch into the robots’ chassis, crumpling it inwards slightly. Vic followed up the punch with another, but Atlas was ready for it and parried it with his left arm, then kicked Cyborg away, sending him flying backwards.
Cyborg shot his force canons at the ground to give himself some momentum in the opposite direction, slowing himself down. But Atlas had some tricks up his metaphorical sleeves too. Having realized that a direct approach was difficult, he used his powerful hands like a backhoe to scoop up a massive piece of earth and hurled it at Cyborg. Vic was unsure how to react to this, or more precisely, how he expected Atlas to follow this attack up. The boulder itself was a problem, sure, but it was just to close the gap. Atlas could be using it to block his line of sight and be jumping right behind it, or he could be using the temporary blindspot caused by the massive object to approach from either side.
Instead of guessing, Vic decided to power through the problem. Vic shot both of his force cannons at the projectile, sending bits of dirt every which way. Atlas was hiding in what was once the dirt ball’s shadow and Vic took advantage of his surprise to launch himself at the robot. Cyborg shot his force cannons behind him, propelling himself forwards rapidly in a charge mirroring Atlas’ own.
He knocked the massive machine to the ground and sat on his chest, using his arms to pin down the machine’s.
“You’re down, Atlas. Do you yield?”
“I told you. I will never yield. I am the strongest!”
Atlas began to press his weight against Vic’s strength. Vic knew he was a match for Atlas’ strength but there was one key problem: stamina. Vic’s body was, of course, cybernetic in part, but it wasn’t the same. He was still human and human beings got tired. Machines did not.
Vic could already feel his muscle starting to fatigue. The fight hadn’t been long, but any fatigue was going to be the difference. He knew he was a match for Atlas’ strength when he was at 100%, but every percent below that made it more and more likely to be Atlas’ win.
‘I need to end this fight now or the immediate future if I want to win. But my normal attacks aren’t doing anything to him. I could try a sonic attack, but I don’t think that’d really effect him. I could try targeting his joints specifically, but those were designed to take more than I can give. But I can’t just let him overpower me for the win. That’d make him overconfident and more likely to get into trouble afterwards. No… I’ve got a better idea.’
In an instant, Vic’s muscles stopped resisting. “I yield.”
Vic pushed himself off Atlas, who stood up and looked at Cyborg, confused.
“What foe yields when he has his opponent on the ground, at his mercy? I demand you continue!”
“No. This fight was never to the death, only to yielding. But frankly, you aren’t strong enough to interest me. You said it yourself, you will never yield. And pummelling you to a point where you are the equivalent of unconscious just isn’t worth my time. So I yielded. Congrats. You win.”
Atlas stood, incredulous. “No. That is not allowed. I did not win. You lost! Those are not the same!”
Vic turned to Keiji and Donna and then noticed that the fight had taken them about 30 yards from where they started. He started to walk back towards them, and Atlas followed.
“Guys, I yielded that fight. Doesn’t that mean I lost?”
Keiji raised an eyebrow. “I guess?”
“See? Congrats, you won.”
“... I do not accept this victory. This is a loss in all but name. Mark my words, Victor Stone. I will wander the globe, facing foe after foe to grow stronger. I will become the strongest being and when I do, we will have a real fight, one where you must acknowledge my strength for real.”
“Looking forwards to it. Stay out of trouble until then, understood?”
Vic held out his hand for a handshake which Atlas begrudgingly accepted.
“Understood.”
“Atlas, catch.”
Keiji tossed a small flash drive to Atlas who had to bend down to grab it.
“That has all your schematics and drawings on it, as well as all the parts we used to make you and where we sourced them from. It’s probably the best thing out there to help you repair yourself.”
“Thank you. You all have given me much to think about it. When we meet again… I will be stronger in body and mind. Farewell for now but I will return to challenge you again, Victor.”
“I’ll be waiting. And I promise to go all out next time, Atlas.”
Atlas took off to the west, heading to only he knew where.
Once he was far enough out of sight, Vic laid down on the ground, exhausted.
“Well, that’s enough bluffing for the next decade. I really underestimated him.”
Donna sat down to his left, Keiji on his right.
“Told you that you were being cocky. We all built him but he’s out of all of our leagues,” Keiji said.
“Yeah… but I really wanted to do it, y’know? Kinda humbling to be beat by your own creation.”
“If it makes you feel better, I lost to him too,” Donna said.
“Wait what? When did you fight him?”
“I’ll tell you on the way back. Not my finest moment, but I put up a good fight.”
“Proud of you. You’ve come a long way in your training. But after that fight… I’m going to need to get a lot stronger and pick my own training back up. I kinda feel like I’ve been stagnant for awhile, just sort of winning my fights through grit and will power. But if Atlas had been hostile… I don’t think I could’ve stopped him. So, I’ll need to get back to the drawing board and see what I can do to take myself to the next level.”
“And we’ll be there to help you however we can. But uh… Vic, finals are in like two weeks. Maybe focus on that first?” Keiji suggested.
“I’d rather get beat up by another robot,” Vic groaned.

2024.05.15 18:40 writteninlilac My response to a thread where my PM was posted!

So, I sent a PM to someone after he asked a stupid question. I called him out on it, but I did it privately.
He posted it publicly in the filmmakers sub, and a bunch of people, who don't know what they are talking about, fell for it hook, line and sinker (and the people who supported my truthful answer all got downvoted for not being part of their hivemind).
The thread is gone now after the OP broke Reddit's terms of service and is harassing me by PM, but here is the thread:
https://www.reddit.com/Filmmakers/comments/1csj61d/the_hate_you_get_for_asking_simple_questions_is/
Below is my main response to it and all of them (and I'll maybe try to draw a few of them here to see my reply by tagging their usernames):
Hey, I'm the guy that wrote a private message to the OP, rather than call him out publicly (which is the last time I'll ever do him a favor).
Furthermore, as a working writer, the people telling me I'm wrong is laughable.
The OP, who has never written a script before in his life, and did zero research into the industry, is looking for a quick and easy break rather than putting in an ounce of work:
"Can I simply come up with an idea and just pitch the show and sell it and make lots of money while others do the hard work" is essentially the question he was asking, and you all fell for it.
No, he can't, is the answer. And the people egging him on to continue down this false track are 100% wrong.
People like myself and others have spent YEARS putting in the work into our craft, having written endless script after script after script, most of which lead absolutely nowhere, for the longest time. Now, eventually, after doing this for long enough, and gaining endless practise at this craft, you start to get good. Good enough to be hired as part of a writing team. After several more years of grinding away working within a team on multiple television shows, with enough credits and experience to your name, you can then find yourself in a position to write your own original material and pitch it. And if you're extremely lucky, you might even sell a pitch and get hired to run the room, because the money people trust that you can actually write a tv show, not just come up with ideas for a tv show, and not just the pilot itself, but also multiple episodes after that, guiding a room full of other writers to create a show under your singular vision.
The reality is a long hard slog, that some of the best writers in the business often don't ever reach. That's how hard it is. That's the reality is I was giving the OP. The guy who tramples in without a care in the world and doesn't want to put once an ounce of effort in, or even the most basic research himself, while others slave away at this business for years.
And the people saying how wrong I am, are, hilariously, wrong themselves. They just don't know it.
Studios, producers and production companies do NOT buy completed seasons of scripts from writers, especially writers who are new to the industry.
Professional writers write only a pilot script. That is it. The pilot script has to sell the show. No other episodes. Along with the pilot episode, you are often expected to provide a pitch deck or show bible, giving a grander vision of the series. Here, you explore the shape of the series, characters, character arcs, future episode, future seasons, some include images, and all kinds of other stuff.
People who write more episodes than the first one are laughed out of the room (which they'll never get into anyway), because that is not how things are done in the business.
Hey, filmmakers, can I pick up an iPhone, make a feature film this afternoon and then win an Oscar for it?
No? How hard can it be?
I don't actually need to go and learn the craft of filmmaking like the rest of you, do I?
Come on, guys, surely it is all that hard. Maybe someone should actually help me out and give me a reality check, by PM, and then I'll post it here and you can try to mock the guy and stalk him in retaliation if you like. What do you say?

In case you missed it, here are my reactions to the previous episodes:
https://www.reddit.com/umineko/s/W3975jzCUM (Episode 1)
https://www.reddit.com/umineko/s/KNSuiUpGTD (Episode 2)
https://www.reddit.com/umineko/s/YD15EZQjJH (Episode 3)

https://www.reddit.com/umineko/s/z5X7WIJbFW (Episode 5)
https://www.reddit.com/umineko/s/rb1AMenQtv (Episode 6)
Impeccable Intuition: Holy shit!!! I have learned something new about myself: I should trust myself. However, I shouldn’t trust my mind, only my heart. My logic told me Battler was the culprit, but my intuition signaled out Shannon, Rudolf, Kyrie, and especially Rudolf as being the most suspicious. The Shannon theory was supplemented by logic, but it still came mostly from intuition. I was onto Rudolf and Kyrie ever since episode fucking one!!! And I was especially onto them during episode two.
Note: All this is based on whether the truth Bernkastel showed us is legitimate or not.
I just knew that there was something fucked up about Rudolf (and Kyrie). Something felt off about this from the very beginning. Now, of course, this might end up not being actually legitimate, but leave me alone right now, I’m currently dancing on cloud nine. I’ve gotta shout it to the sky: I’m not crazy! Maybe a little bit with my Battler theories, but my heart was in the right place.
Godddd, I feel so unbelievably validated right now. Y’all really kept your mouths zipped tightly shut every time I mentioned them, didn’t you? Kudos, most communities would’ve spoiled that kind of twist. I’m honestly feeling incredibly appreciative of this wonderful community right now. Y’all are awesome. Thanks for letting me experience things and not letting the urge to reveal things win over.
Return of the Bestcest: Ahahahahaha. On that note, y’all also suck! One of the things I had heard coming into the series was that there was some sort of incest plotline. But y’all really told me, “Oh? Where’d you hear that?” There’s a term for this: gaslighting. Y’all gaslit me into thinking that I had heard wrong. Evil little buggers, that’s what y’all are. XD.
But Goddamn! There was a lot of incest in this episode. Freaking Kinzo with his own daughter, creating Beatrice (Shannon/Kanon) who then gets with Battler (and George + Jessica). Yeesh. I had been expecting it coming in, but I hadn’t imagined there would be quite that much incest. If Battler and Beatrice/Shannon had a child together, I’m pretty sure its inbreeding coefficient would be 28%, that’s more than the famous Habsburgs who were at only 25%. They’d still lose to the Ptolemies, though; the infamous Cleopatra VII could have had an inbreeding coefficient as high as 45%. And that’s not even the extent of it, Cleopatra was married to her sibling/s, if they had had children together, the resulting child would have had an inbreeding coefficient of about 90%.
And it’s not only incest, it’s incest with his relative who is herself a child of incest. And not only that, but it’s essentially a coterie of cousins trying to figure out which one of them can bang their cousin-aunt the fastest. Are we sure I didn’t get lost and accidentally end up on the crusader kings subreddit?
Smidgen of Beatrice/Metaverse: This is one thing that has really been hurting the story in my opinion. There’s so little Beatrice in it, particularly Beatrice and Battler interacting with one another. I’m still not sure what the relationship of the reborn Beatrice is to the old Beatrice. Did she inherit her memories? If she did, it was never explicit, which is unfortunate, because I would have liked to see it.
Beyond that... c’mon, what’s with her funeral? All that kinda came out of left field. Is this a separate Beatrice, created by Bernkastel to show Featherine the answers. Does that mean that the Battler who appears in this episode is also a piece created by Bernkastel?
Additionally, all of this begs the question: what exactly is the nature of the metaverse? Is it something that has actuality? Or is it something that only exists within the mind (Ange and Featherine’s?), or is the story going to leave this vague and undefined to hone in its thematic messages?
Regardless, the point is that I desire more Beatrice and Battler interactions. I hope that this funeral of hers isn’t the last we see of her. Battler and Beatrice were wed, but I still feel like something’s missing, it hasn’t yet come full circle, not until it is explained what drove Beatrice to the extremity of her cruelty in the first few episodes. That wasn’t simply a hurting heart, it was sadism.
Lion Ushiromiya: So, if I’m understanding it correctly, this is what Shannon/Kanon/Beatrice could have been had Natsuhi not yeeted her off the cliff. Also, does this mean Jessica is lesbian? Lmao. Unless my Kanon = Shannon theory is wrong, that is, then ignore all of this. I’m pretty sure that this is the correct conclusion, though. This comment is my justification of it: https://www.reddit.com/umineko/comments/1co28vs/comment/l3bu6ho/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
Additionally, it is hella suspicious that when Willard tells Shannon to fetch Kanon so they can talk about it together, Shannon says quite forcefully that she is unable to do so. And the fact that Beatrice told Shannon she would create a friend for her using magic, which is usually key in her language for “I’m about to make some shit up.”
It’s an interesting character, the booty pinching is a nice touch. I don’t have much to say on this subject, it’ll be interesting to see where the character goes in the final episode. Hopefully she (he doesn’t feel right) makes things come full circle in relation to the culprit.
Beatrice Castiglioni: The backstory of Kinzo and the true predecessor Beatrice was fascinating. It certainly makes everything fit together, although it is an outlandish tale that no one would have ever been able to guess. I also guessed that the Beatrice that Rosa met was the daughter of the original Beatrice, but I never imagined that she was Kinzo’s daughter, and I certainly never guessed that Kinzo would force himself upon her in the name of banal batshit love. Or that the Beatrice that Maria meets with was both Kinzo’s daughter and granddaughter.
Clair Vaux Bernardus: I am currently working on the assumption that Claire is simply the veiled version of the culprit, Shannon. Meaning that Yasu = Sayo = Shannon = Beatrice = Kanon = Baby Battler. Hence the title she refers to herself with, “one, yet many.” Or, in layman's terms: batshit crazy. She definitely has dissociative identity disorder. I guessed Shannon may have been the culprit in my previous post, but I think the moment it really nailed home is when I realized that Shannon couldn’t be Yasu’s senior servant. She would’ve been far too old.
Besotted Beatrice: Shannon’s story really is depressing, though. I’m sure most of us have felt the pangs of love. Many of us have probably felt it even worse than Shannon, so we should be able to empathize with what she went through. That all being said, it is not Battler’s fault by any stretch of the imagination. They were kids, it was stupid of him to make a promise like that, but such is life, kids are stupid. What is even more ridiculous, though, is holding onto a spur of the moment childhood promise even after growing up. And no matter how much it might hurt to find out that the one you love doesn’t even remember, it doesn’t justify murder, nor does it wipe away the deserving contempt in the face of such an act.
Next Episode?: I’ve been saying this for a few episodes now, but I do really want to see a big magical showdown happen between Battler’s team and the Bernkastel/Lambdadelta’s team. I was also cheering for Battler to come and rescue Lion and Willard when Bernkastel attacked them. I’m still holding out hope for them to get Gamemaster Battler involved. I trust Battler to sort things out, he hasn’t let me down yet. Long live Meta Battler.
Also, sidenote, but I noticed that in the version of the story that Lion and Ange were shown together, they showed the death of every character except for Battler and Eva. That means that Battler might very well have survived the Rokkenjima massacre in the “real” version of events, assuming that we can trust that classification given by Bernkastel. Which I am going to assume for simplicity’s sake.
Also, what happened to Ange? She got shredded again. Is she dead? Is she dead in the “real world”? Or alive? Or what? It’ll be interesting to see. Regardless, now I’m just happy I can now say without reserve: FUCK DOLFMAN. I’m a simple man, this is all I need to be happy, the knowledge that Rudolf was, in fact, a piece of shit just like my intuition was telling me since episode one. I’ve still got it.

2024.05.15 18:16 Previous_Science7675 The Many Benefits of Using a Property Management Company

Property management companies like real estate companies in Sri Lanka are entities that handle the day-to-day operations and maintenance of real estate properties on behalf of the property owner. If you intend purchasing a commercial property for sale or villas for sale in Sri Lanka, it is such companies that would help you to better manage the property and handle the nitty gritty on your behalf. Their responsibilities can vary depending on the type of property they manage, but generally include tasks such as:
· Tenant Relations: Managing tenant inquiries, screening potential tenants, handling lease agreements, and addressing tenant concerns or complaints.
· Rent Collection: Collecting rent from tenants, enforcing lease terms, and pursuing delinquent payments if necessary.
· Property Maintenance: Coordinating and overseeing repairs, regular maintenance, and upkeep of the property, including landscaping, cleaning, and ensuring that everything is in good working condition. They will even handle the management and operations of agricultural land like coconut land for sale in Sri Lanka.
· Financial Management: Handling financial aspects such as budgeting, accounting, and reporting to the property owner. This may also include paying bills, property taxes, and other expenses related to the property.
· Marketing and Advertising: Advertising vacancies, showing the property to potential tenants, and implementing marketing strategies to attract new tenants.
· Legal Compliance: Ensuring that the property complies with local housing laws, building codes, zoning regulations, and safety standards. This includes handling eviction proceedings if necessary.
· Tenant Services: Providing services to tenants such as handling maintenance requests, resolving disputes, and addressing emergencies.

Property management companies aim to maximise the value of the property while minimising the stress and workload for the property owner. They act as intermediaries between the owner and the tenants, handling various administrative, financial, and operational tasks to ensure the smooth operation of the property.

The many benefits of using a property management company
Using a property management company can offer numerous benefits for property owners, including:
· Time Savings: Property management companies handle all aspects of property maintenance, tenant relations, and financial management, saving property owners valuable time and effort.
· Expertise and Experience: Property managers are professionals with experience in real estate management, ensuring that the property is well-maintained and managed efficiently.
· Tenant Screening: Property management companies conduct thorough screening processes to find reliable tenants, reducing the risk of problematic tenants and vacancies.
· Rent Collection: Property managers handle rent collection and pursue delinquent payments, ensuring a consistent cash flow for property owners.
· Property Maintenance: Property management companies oversee regular maintenance and repairs, preventing small issues from turning into costly problems.
· Legal Compliance: Property managers stay up-to-date with local housing laws, regulations, and safety standards, ensuring that the property is in compliance and reducing the risk of legal issues.
· Marketing and Advertising: Property management companies advertise vacancies and attract potential tenants, minimising vacancy periods and maximising rental income.
· Emergency Response: Property managers handle emergencies such as maintenance issues or tenant disputes, providing quick and efficient solutions.
· Financial Management: Property management companies handle budgeting, accounting, and financial reporting, providing property owners with transparent and accurate financial records.
· Peace of Mind: By outsourcing the day-to-day management tasks to professionals, property owners can enjoy peace of mind knowing that their investment is in good hands.

Using a property management company can streamline operations, minimise risks, and maximise returns for property owners, making it a valuable investment for those who own rental properties.

Are there any challenges involved with using a property management company?
While using a property management company offers many benefits, there are also some potential challenges to consider:
· Cost: Property management services typically come with fees, which can eat into the rental income. It is important to carefully consider the cost-effectiveness of hiring a property management company, especially for smaller properties or in markets with lower rental yields.
· Finding the Right Company: Not all property management companies are created equal. Finding a reputable and reliable company with a track record of success can take time and research. It is essential to thoroughly vet potential property management companies before hiring them.
· Communication: Clear and effective communication between the property owner and the management company is crucial. Miscommunication or lack of communication can lead to misunderstandings, delays, and dissatisfaction with the management of the property.
· Lack of Control: Some property owners may feel a loss of control over their investment when delegating management tasks to a third-party company. While property managers are hired to make decisions on behalf of the owner, some owners may struggle with relinquishing control.
· Quality of Service: The quality of service provided by property management companies can vary. Issues such as slow response times, inadequate maintenance, or poor tenant relations can negatively impact the reputation of the property and its profitability.
· Tenant Turnover: High tenant turnover can be costly for property owners, as it results in vacancy periods and additional expenses related to finding and screening new tenants. Property management companies play a crucial role in minimising tenant turnover by providing excellent tenant relations and timely maintenance.
· Legal Liability: Property owners remain ultimately responsible for legal matters related to their properties, even when they hire a property management company. It is important for owners to ensure that the management company they hire is knowledgeable about local laws and regulations to avoid legal issues.
· Conflict of Interest: In some cases, property management companies may prioritise their own interests over those of the property owner, such as by recommending costly repairs or maintenance services from affiliated companies. Property owners should be vigilant and ensure that the management company acts in their best interests.

Despite these challenges, many property owners find that the benefits of using a property management company outweigh the potential drawbacks, especially when it comes to saving time, reducing stress, and maximising the profitability of their investments.

2024.05.15 18:10 adulting4kids Wisdom of Solomon Deep Dive Study

As I mentioned in a post earlier today, I have decided to embark on the religious studies journey by preparing a special study guided series of self paced dynamic verse by verse incredibly high level of studies in secular and spiritual development of the world cultural and religious traditions that's going to include numerous types of sources texts from every single type of practice I can unearth thanks for the Good old Google and Bing research resources.
This started with the Gnostic texts and the Dead Sea Scrolls with the Gospel of Thomas and the Book of Enoch. It has been a few weeks and I have literally gotten so far ahead of myself that it seems like I am overdue and overwhelmed by such an amazing task. This is why I am not sure if I should really be posting it but if not here, I would not know where to ask for advice and feedback and guidance and editing and moral support and even research assistance and input from anyone whose willing to assist in any capacity.
There's nothing to do except process the questions and help with the commentary and limitations of this format and the hope that there might be at least ONE human being that's interested in similar things that's willing to help in whatever capacity they can....
I had plans of trying to make it easier for everyone by trying to finish at least one full text before posting others, but I don't think it's possible because I keep going from different ones back to these then to those then back to that regardless of the fact that I am confused and staring to get burned out before I get started....
So I have changed my mind about finishing up one to present for the group and will simply be posting some daily stuff for your input and feedback. I'm not trying to make you convert to any faith as these guides will cover every single type of practice eventually.
Today is Wisdom of Solomon day so I have to unpack my own stuff here and I have no real formal plans yet for how to present it all, that is based solely on the fact that I am also doing this for my own spiritual growth and development and so there's no formal plans for publication as a project yet....
Anyway this is a basic overview of how I have been working on my project and I love the fact that you still might be reading after that long winded meandering message!

I will post the Book of Enoch stuff later on which is already much more in depth with the commentary and study materials and I think that it's coming along nicely. This is just beginning so I figured it was a good skeleton to illustrate where I start off then I will give a much better clue 🗝️🗝️🗝️🗝️🗝️ to where it's headed later today when I can format the Enoch stuff for posting.
Thanks in advance for checking it out and please don't hesitate to repost in places that might help out in their own ways, even if it's to roast the hell out of me (no pun intended, if that's even a pun!)

2024.05.15 18:06 Just_a_Player2 Not for the weak - games that are better played on Hard Mode

Not for the weak - games that are better played on Hard Mode
Do you think you're good at games? Then these hard-core video games will prove otherwise.
Difficulty modes are a topic that has divided the gaming community for a long time and is likely to be shared for many centuries to come. Arguments that we have the right to an easy mode are as common as those who consider anyone who wants to relax and spend time playing on something less than "difficult" to be a "casual."
Of course, none of these polar opinions are strictly true, and neither game mode is inherently better than the other — gamers should choose the level of ass-kicking, they and their controller face based solely on their life experience.
In general, have you ever wondered why some players prefer to play games at maximum difficulty? After all, it would seem, why torture yourself if you can just relax and enjoy the gameplay? However, as it turns out, there are a number of reasons why more complex game modes may be preferable.
Firstly, passing the game on high difficulty allows you to really immerse yourself in the game world and feel like a part of the events taking place. When each step requires maximum concentration and attention, the player becomes more involved in what is happening, and defeating difficult enemies or passing difficult sections brings much more satisfaction. In addition, this approach allows you to develop skills and strategic thinking, which makes the gameplay even more exciting. Instead of just pressing buttons and watching how the hero copes with enemies, the player becomes an active participant in events, making important decisions and influencing the course of the game.

Resident Evil 7

https://preview.redd.it/0l52zysuzl0d1.jpg?width=1268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6eb3e62224afc76fe44c9504e1fc08be0f64c0f3
Resident Evil 7 has restored the series to its former luster, returning it to the origins of the survival horror genre with a first-person view.
The game is undoubtedly terrifying, as various members of the Baker family harass poor, faceless (and lonely) people. Ethan goes through a true test throughout the game. But if you are eager to get even more exciting sensations than the basic difficulty level offers, try the advanced difficulty mode "Madhouse".
"Madhouse" refers to the history of the series even in the basic gameplay, since in-game cassettes are now required for preservation, which can be found in game locations in limited quantities. Vintage coin collectibles are also needed to unlock key items and upgrades — meaning that your ability to save and improve your progress is entirely dependent on your skill.
Opponents are also much more powerful, appear in greater numbers and earlier than in the usual passage, and some plot encounters are even modified to scare you even more.
As with all survival horror games, success in Resident Evil 7 requires not only the ability to fight, but also a deep understanding of the world and mechanics. "Madhouse" demonstrates this best by creating a tactically calibrated and extremely frightening track that will give you a genuine sense of accomplishment when you finally get out of Baker House.

The Devil Can Cry 5

https://preview.redd.it/3uwv75tyzl0d1.jpg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=900e8e6acb7334628d7b5f9558ea60646790b12d
The Devil May Cry series is widely known for its variety of difficulty levels in each game; since these are games in the genre of "hacking and extermination", their main concept is to play them over and over again. Devil May Cry 5 is no exception.
The highest difficulty of DMC5 "Hell and Underworld" requires some effort even to unlock it, because first you need to complete the game on the "Son of Sparda", which itself is unlocked only after passing on the "Demon Hunter". For those who are willing to make an effort, the next three difficulty levels after the Son of Sparda are different from each other and valuable in their own way.
"Dante must die" opens up new enemy attack patterns and significantly increases speed and aggression, while the most dangerous enemies appear earlier and more often, plus they all deal twice as much damage and have twice as much health. In Heaven and Hell, on the contrary, the mechanics of "one shot, one defeat" are presented — not only for the player, but for everything else.
Hell and the Underworld combine the best of both worlds. Of course, you still die from a single hit, but your opponents behave the same way as in the "Dante must die" mode, making them extremely dangerous, as if in Hell itself. The mode also eliminates checkpoints and limits you to only three revivals per mission. It may seem impassable, but for an experienced player who has overcome all other difficulties, this is an unsurpassed challenge and it is incredibly pleasant to cope with it.

Fallout 4

https://preview.redd.it/0psrnvn10m0d1.jpg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9ee96e63dcaa7ff12abbbd10b6b48cabe7974be3
Although Fallout 4 is definitely not the first game that comes to mind for most of us when it comes to grueling challenges, it has one special level of difficulty that radically changes the perception of gameplay. Added after the release, the Survival mode replaced its predecessor, now called "Very Difficult", and brought unique changes to the gameplay.
Survival, as expected, turns the game into an authentic survival simulator. Both manual and accelerated saving will be eliminated, as well as fast movement, and the only way to save progress is to allow the character to sleep in bed for at least an hour of the game.
All damage and status effects must also be eliminated manually by the player, including basic human needs such as food, drink and sleep — ignoring them will entail additional damage. Moreover, you deal less significant and more realistic damage to opponents, who, in turn, become more powerful and appear more often. Now your ammunition has a portable weight, and, yes, the familiar weight limit begins to harm your character if it is exceeded.
Many fans play modern Fallout games either because of their excellent storylines and role-playing elements, or in order to run and destroy enemies in a post—apocalyptic setting, but Survival actually allows you to live in the reality of the Fallout world - for better or for worse.

Alien: Isolation

Traditionally, the average difficulty level represents the basic starting point that the developers have been working on. Based on this foundation, they construct other levels of complexity, adding or removing certain functions, and then modifying artificial intelligence accordingly. As for Alien: Isolation, the creators from Creative Assembly and Feral Interactive recommend starting your journey with an initially high level of complexity. In addition to the fact that this is their starting point, in simpler modes, players are less likely to encounter a xenomorph.
At a high level of difficulty, he appears much more often and demonstrates the ability to adapt to the tactics of the player (for example, he starts checking cabinets if the gamer hides in them too often). Combined with a limited supply of items, the player feels as if he was in a classic alien movie. However, if players want to test themselves for real, the "Nightmare" mode will take them to new heights and further sharpen the skills of the xenomorph.
They challenge the players, forcing them to overcome incredible difficulties and torments in order to achieve victory. However, it is these complex and demanding games that give the most vivid emotions and a sense of deep satisfaction from the trials they have passed. For those who crave a real gaming challenge, these projects will be the perfect choice. Be prepared for difficulties, but don't be afraid to accept them — because that's the only way you can really taste victory.

2024.05.15 18:05 -343-Guilty-Spark- Canon Fodder: In-Zane in the Membrane

https://www.halowaypoint.com/news/canon-fodder-in-zane-in-the-membrane

It’s not a Cypress Hill song, it’s a new issue of Canon Fodder!
By now, you’ll no doubt have made headway through the latest Operation in Halo Infinite —titled “Banished Honor”—which was accompanied by a new Waypoint Chronicle based around a simple question: “What would the story of a Spartan who joined the Banished be?”
We had the perfect character lined up to tell that story, one who hasn’t been seen since the end of Hunt the Truth's second season all the way back in 2015.
Welcome back, Ilsa Zane.

THE THIRD LIFE

Our ninth Waypoint Chronicle has arrived, which follows on from the concluding events of Hunt the Truth where a Guardian awakens on the colony world Laika III. Broadly, these events are concurrent with the story that unfolds in Halo 5 as Cortana lays claim to the Mantle, rallies AIs to her cause, and sets about imposing an imperial peace upon the galaxy.
Where Hunt the Truth saw the mantle of narrator pass from journalist Benjamin Giraud to undercover ONI agent Maya “FERO” Sankar in its second season, that torch is once again passed on to a character who made her presence felt in this story... the rogue Spartan known as Ilsa Zane.
Halo: The Third Life is available here on Halo Waypoint, as a free PDF, and in audiobook format on YouTube.
“October 2558. After being taken prisoner by the Banished as chaos erupts across the galaxy, Ilsa Zane’s hunt for the truth leads her to a new stage of life she never expected...”

EMPTY THRONE

Last issue, we gave you a totally legitimate look at the cover art of Halo: Empty Throne. Art is in the eye of the beholder, and unfortunately the powers that be decided that we could do better than a screenshot made in Halo 3's Forge mode in ten minutes with some crudely edited-in elements... it was a close call, really, but we ultimately pivoted towards something with the vibe of it having come from an incredibly talented and brilliant artist—namely, Will Staehle, whose other work you can check out here.
So, here you go. Here’s the official cover art for Halo: Empty Throne, coming later this year.
Pre-order your copy of Halo: Empty Throne here!
Cover art of Halo: Empty Throne illustrated by Will Staehle depicting a young girl and a Spartan emerging from a blue explosion coming from a Forerunner structure
“2559. It has been a year since the rogue artificial intelligence Cortana seized control of the Domain, an otherworldly dimension housing a vast information network. With an array of Forerunner weapons at her disposal, Cortana set out to enforce an authoritarian peace on the civilizations of the galaxy. But as the United Nations Space Command flagship Infinity prepares to strike against Cortana at Zeta Halo, another plan has also been set in motion.
An ancient access point hidden on a seemingly insignificant human colony has become the focus of a parallel effort to claim the Domain and its immeasurable capabilities. The UNSC, however, needs a key: a living, forsaken product of an old war. As a new generation of heroes rise to meet this challenge and Cortana's pursuit of control reaches a desperate and sudden crescendo, a cunning, ruthless warrior emerges from the shadows of the Banished, who has vowed to fill the new power vacuum by any means necessary....”

THE BANISHED SPARTAN

ILSA ZANE

RANK: Bloodstar BIRTH WORLD: Kholo DATE OF BIRTH: June 11, 2528 APPEARED IN: Halo: Initiation, Hunt the Truth, Halo: The Third Life
Born on the Outer Colony world Kholo, Ilsa Zane was just eleven years old when she lost her parents and everyone she had ever known as the Covenant descended upon her home and reduced its surface to glass. Taken to the remote colony Asphodel as a ward of the state, Zane remained largely silent and solitary until coming of age in 2547, where she was conscripted into UNSC military service.
In 2550, Zane was selected as a candidate for the prototype phase of the SPARTAN-IV program. Though she survived the augmentation process, additional experimental cocktails caused severe neurological damage to Zane. After escaping the facility, she was recovered by Admiral Mattius Drake and integrated into the rebel group known as the New Colonial Alliance.
In the immediate aftermath of the Covenant War, Zane led a group of operatives who attempted to commandeer the UNSC Infinity —securing it as the flagship of the New Colonial Alliance and to prevent the UNSC from deploying it to police independent colonies. This plan was thwarted by Spartan Sarah Palmer, who ejected Zane into space where the rogue Spartan was once more rescued by Drake, who was on standby in a nearby Prowler.
Following this, Zane served as an acquisitions specialist for weapons and materiel, as well as a ruthless instructor for mercenary and rebel groups that joined the New Colonial Alliance, forging them into a veritable fighting force in preparation for a large-scale strike against the UNSC. However, the awakening of the Guardians in 2558 waylaid these plans, leaving Zane as a prisoner of the Banished—with whom she ultimately came to find both common cause and brotherhood.

BANISH THY HONOR

Halo: Tales From Slipspace - Hunting Party
Image [Imgur]
What does it mean to be Banished?
To be Banished is to seek to liberate oneself, to pledge loyalty not to false promises of divine ascension but to the fearsome might and will exemplified by Atriox.
Service is welcome from any species, of any previous affiliation or loyalty—from the lowliest Unggoy thrall to the mightiest Sangheili warrior, and all between and beyond.
Power is its own end. In the wake of the Covenant War, opportunity is rife to carve up the remnants of the fallen empire’s vast resources and obtain technology that furthers the prime directive of the Banished: to never bow again, a “reclamation” all their own of freedom.
Following decades of calamitous conflict that has left even the most capable commanders war-weary, it is the Banished that are energized and fortified in purpose and will. Payment for those who share common cause with Atriox comes in blood and sport and spoils.
But those who would choose this path must unshackle themselves from ties to the past—unbind themselves from old masters, cast off their piety, and banish their sentimental devotion to honor.
Only then can one become a true vessel for victory.
Only then is one truly Banished.

THIEVING MITTENS

Halo: Escalation Issue #3 page depicting a showdown between Spartan Scruggs, who has taken Admiral Hood hostage, and Spartan Palmer, Chieftain Lydus, and Arbiter Thel 'Vadam [Imgur]
Why would a Spartan go rogue?
It’s an apt question. After all, Spartans are meant to represent paragons of humanity in both strength and spirit. But across the generations of Spartans, there have been traitors, rebels, or those who simply wanted to leave the UNSC behind to live on their own terms.
For the Spartan-IIs, these examples came as a result of their training—of recognizing and rebelling against the horrific context of their situation.
In the “Homecoming” episode of Halo Legends, Daisy-023 and several of her fellow candidates sought to escape the program following the augmentation procedures that killed or maimed many of their brothers and sisters, but were ultimately brought back into the fold.
Likewise, in the Halo: Evolutions short story “Pariah,” Soren-066 was left disfigured by the augmentations and was gradually radicalized by a technician named Partch, eventually attempting to escape Reach and join the Insurrection. Indeed, the Spartan who sought to apprehend Soren was Randall-037, who later appeared in Halo: Nightfall where we learned that he had evaded the UNSC after the Battle of Vodin in 2532, even starting a family before ONI eventually caught up to him over a decade later, "reversing" many of his augmentations in exchange for release from UNSC service.
Looking to the Spartan Field Manual, originally released back in 2018, we can gain further insight into the risk of rogue Spartans as it applies to the SPARTAN-IV program:
STOLEN GAUNTLET
Nevertheless, the SPARTAN-IV selection process is not foolproof. Spartan-IVs are soldiers with preexisting philosophies and loyalties, and even the most carefully screened candidate can react to their augmentation and training in unexpected ways. Individual Spartans represent a strategically significant level of combat power and pose a major security threat if their loyalty is compromised.
The STOLEN GAUNTLET fail-safe protocol has been created to provide training and permissive rules of engagement for special agents tasked with tracking down and swiftly neutralizing rogue Spartans.
~ Halo: Official Spartan Field Manual, p. 86
Rogue Spartans
Halo Mythos artwork by Isaac Hannaford depicting Mickey's betrayal of Buck and Romeo in Halo: New Blood [Imgur]
Ilsa Zane represents the earliest example of this manifesting as a critical issue for the Spartan-IV program, and she is far from a singular example.
In Halo: Escalation, we see Spartan Vladimir Scruggs—another New Colonial Alliance defector—attempt to sabotage the peace talks between Arbiter Thel ‘Vadam and Chieftain Lydus.
Another prominent example is Michael Crespo in Halo: New Blood, who became disillusioned with being sent to kill other humans in the wake of the Covenant War and defected to the United Rebel Front with fellow Spartan Rudolf Schein.
Of course, defecting is one thing, but what is it about the Banished that would be attractive to a rogue Spartan? That is something wholly contingent upon the individual, and at present there is a specific example we can examine: Ilsa Zane.
Having been discarded by the UNSC after falling victim to experimental augmentation cocktails that ravaged her body and mind, she was eventually left for dead by Admiral Drake as well—she was herself “banished” from the places she had sought to belong. This, in combination with her proclivity for violence and a ruthless mindset, led her to discover a certain kinship with the Jiralhanae on Laika III, leading her to willingly pledge herself and the New Colonial Alliance to the Banished.
In the words of Spartan Scruggs: "I am a Spartan. But what you fight for isn't always the same as who you fight for."

ARMORY INFINITUM

The Ravager was a new weapon introduced to the sandbox in Halo Infinite, though it made its fictional debut in Halo: Shadows of Reach.
“The cacophony of gunfire was replaced by the sizzle of shock rifles and the thump-hiss of ravagers.”
~ Halo: Shadows of Reach, Chapter 21
Featuring a semi-automatic, three-round burst and a charge ability that can create a burning pool for area-of-effect damage, the Ravager quickly became a favorite tool of Jiralhanae warlords for its capacity to flush out garrisoned infantry.
A unique version of the weapon, the Rebound Ravager, can be found in the possession of Captain Arthoc—a high value target the Master Chief encountered on Zeta Halo. Rounds fired by this weapon have the ability to bounce, to which the words of Agent Washington from Red vs. Blue may come to mind: “It bounces? Who designs a gun that bounces?!”
Halo Infinite screenshot of Arthoc [Imgur]
ARMORY OF RECKONING CAPT ARTHOC FWD: RAVAGER
The Armory of Reckoning—it is a fitting name for the tools of conquest and destruction birthed from its forges.
When we advanced on the human remnants that had sought shelter within their crashed ship, I requested of Commander Bannix an augmented version of the plasma tossers produced by the Forge of Torograd.
Where we have mastered both spike and spear in our weaponry since before the Immolation, infusion matter remains an object of study for our alchemists. I was informed by the Screecleaver that there is a great savant stationed on Oth Liqattu who has sought to unlock further secrets of this fetid power, applying it to our own troops and many of our vehicles.
It is said that prolonged exposure to this corrosive bile can addle the mind and rot the body... that is good, for there are many small spaces in human ships. The capacity for this weapon to launch projectiles that bounce before erupting into toxic piles was of great use in flushing our foes from cover. How they flailed and danced to our battle song!
It is my understanding that pure infusion matter is pumped throughout Forerunner facilities, so we must dedicate resources to finding these wellsprings within the substructures of this ring. I shall bring this to Tremonius once he has returned from investigating a disturbance at his outpost.

MERIDIAN SLOANCOMING

Last month saw the arrival of Halo: Battle Born's rerelease, featuring two new short story “adjuncts” which we took a closer look at in our previous issue.
On April 30, the rerelease of Halo: Meridian Divide hit the shelves and—as folks have noticed—there's another adjunct in this one as well!
MERIDIAN HOMECOMING
Halo 5 screenshot of a Promethean Knight on Meridian [Imgur]
Completing the trifecta of new adjuncts in these rereleases is “Meridian Homecoming,” which is set in the immediate aftermath of Cortana’s final sacrifice on Zeta Halo in December 2559.
With the leader of the Created dead, the future of this fledgling faction has been thrown into doubt. High Auxiliary Sloan has returned to Meridian where he occupies a Promethean Knight’s carapace and wanders the vast glasslands of his home to find his own fate.
Of course, fans who followed the Precipice short story series last year (which accompanied Halo Infinite's recurring FIREWALL events) know that Sloan has emerged as a new leader within the Created and set into motion the creation of the Executors. “Meridian Homecoming” gives us a small moment in time with Sloan as he contemplates what the concept of home means to him, Cortana’s unfulfilled promise of salvation, his regrets over how he departed from Meridian, and the memories held within a Promethean Knight that set him on a new path.

COMMUNITY LORE CORNER

For this month’s Community Lore Corner, we kick things off with GammaCompanyMark who has put together a media order for the Halo series if you really, really want to experience it in some form of “timeline order.”
The fine folks at JumperScape have been adapting some of the lore and stories we’ve put out for Halo Infinite, beginning with the Intel drops we did for Season 2: Lone Wolves. (If you can believe it, it’s just passed the two-year mark for when this season launched!)
We recently discovered Lore VoidCat while checking out the latest Halo lore content on YouTube, and he has put together a fantastic series of videos about various expanded universe aspects—from every blade of the Covenant, to recounting the stories of various games and books, and more. Here’s one of his latest!
Would it be surprising if you learned that Covenant Canon has put out a new video featuring some... you guessed it, Covenant canon? In his latest release, we take a look at every known Arbiter throughout the Halo universe’s history.
Every now and then, the nostalgic longing for those halcyon days of 2007 return, which is exactly what you will feel when watching Meaning In-Between and Frogarchist's exploration of how mystery was a core thematic pillar of Halo 3.
And finally, David and Ian of Podcast Evolved have done a new “book club” episode on one of our previous Waypoint Chronicles: Saturn Devouring His Son.
With that, it’s time to sign off for this month’s issue.
If you haven’t already checked out Halo: The Third Life, be sure to do so—and if you have, well, go and read or listen to it again! Let the gears of speculation turn for what is depicted on the cover art for Halo: Empty Throne (don’t forget to secure your pre-order), and you can get your in-game Ilsa Zane cosplay sorted by completing the Banished Honor Operation Pass!
We depart with our favorite Ilsa Zane comic panel for your entertainment.

2024.05.15 18:03 yelpvinegar How to Create a Great Website Hero Section

10 practical tips for designing a motivating Hero Image that always works

The Hero Image is the first thing people see when they open your page. It’s your unique chance to win them over — or lose them forever.
It takes mere seconds for the user to process the first screen. But behind the scenes, there’s a lot of painstaking work by marketers, designers, and developers. How can you quickly find the right solution and pick the perfect image?
I have compiled the best practices for creating an effective Hero Image to share with you. Let us learn from the best.

1. Don’t lose sight of Hero Section goals

The goal of a Hero Section is to make the user want to learn more and perform the next action. It serves as an introduction and invites further communicat

2. Don’t lose sight of user goals

In an attempt to surprise and keep the viewer on the first screen, some designers unwittingly replace the user’s goal with their own: to make an awesome design. But the user’s goal is not design.
The user’s goal is to get something he or she needs: a thing, a service, or particular information. The design should facilitate this task rather than hamper it.
Smart design doesn’t draw attention to itself, or distract users from their goals, or make them gape in amazement, forgetting why they came. This is especially true for the hero section.
Here’s a typical case. The key points presented to the user are:
The message is obvious: our company is great and the user should hurry up and press that button. Alas, that’s not how it works.
User goals have nothing to do with the goals of website owners, marketers, or designers.
Any info that has no immediate value for the user must be held back. Messages like “We Are the Best,” “Celebrating Ten Years of Success,” “Why People Trust Us,” etc. belong at the bottom of the visual hierarchy.
Hero Section visuals must prioritize user goals.
Show the users what they want to see, and make it look really good. That’s your number one priority. All the rest — reliability, trust, guarantees — only serves to cement the user’s conviction that they’ve come to the right place.ion.
At first glance, what users want to see are benefits and problem solutions, not how great the company is or how cool the design looks. :) That stuff stays in the background!
A Hero Image is a visual stimulus. It promises benefits, improvements, and positive changes.
The user will be willing to take a step forward if:

3. Remember: no clutter

The home screen must be crystal clear and easily navigable for the user. This is where you showcase the very essence of your offer. Do your utmost to maximize readability. This includes:
Keep it simple and concise!

4. Turn the user’s goal into a visual magnet

The designer’s task is to visualize the user’s goal, making it look attractive, lively, and catchy. Do a comprehensive study and analysis of your users, product, and competitor sites. This will help you find inspiring images and motivating messages for your audience.
Customers often arrive at the page with a specific image of their goal in mind. It’s important to take this into account and meet their expectations. Predictability is what people expect from you. This applies to both visuals and user experience.
Follow the “one idea, one image” rule. Let your heading resonate with, reinforce, and enhance the image. The image and text must stimulate the user’s desire and willingness to take a step toward gratification.

5. Look for specific triggers

As you work on a Hero Image from concept to final design, remember: you are creating a motivational trigger. Feel free to use any and all marketing, design, and psychology tricks to influence user perception.
Every audience has its own motivation. Get to know your users and find the best way to engage them, both emotionally and rationally. (An emotional reaction is followed by a rational assessment of the information.)
User emotions need to be designed and incorporated into the project at the concept stage.
Specific triggers, such as images and/or text, are especially good for engaging emotions.
To find the best trigger, ask yourself:
Finding an emotional trigger often requires a good brainstorming session. Make a list of emotions and their possible visualizations, such as engaging images, illustrations, or videos. Test the best ideas.
This is the key to your future conversions and audience love.
The emotions don’t necessarily have to be positive. Apple once successfully exploited fear by designing a blood-red AIDS awareness website with an invitation to become a blood donor. It looked impressive. I don’t know about donations, but a lot of people bought red iPhones. :)

6. Show explicit or implicit benefits

An effective trigger is always associated with user benefits. The trigger pushes users to perform actions that will let them reap these benefits.
Popular Hero Images are focused on:
Any type of the Hero Image must convey benefits.
Explicit benefits: highlighting the apparent advantages of using the product or service.
Implicit benefits: visually and psychologically highlighting the user’s improved status, importance, success, skills, and opportunities.
User analysis will help you decide what should be made explicit or kept implicit on a case-by-case basis. Showcasing an implicit benefit is always a win-win. A website that sells nails, for example, will fare much better if its hero section features an image of a thrifty, smart, and neat worker than if it simply has a photo of a house or a bunch of nails. Customers will enjoy feeling like handy homeowners.

7. Manage the user’s attention

Be clear about where you want the viewer’s eyes to go. What will they see first? What next? Where should their gaze linger? Everything depends on the goals of your website and product. The hierarchy of highlights needs to be planned in advance and then tested to make sure it looks like you need it to.
The user’s gaze is controlled by dominance and focal points. Dominant elements are the largest and most attractive ones. Focal points are icons, buttons, and other elements that the user sees after the dominant element. They are responsible for the user’s interest zones and hold his or her attention. They’re typically located at the edges of the screen.
Lifehack #1: Blur your design layout and show it to an average person (not a designer). What’s the first thing they see? What merits more or less attention? It’s a good way to rectify failed ideas before it’s too late.
Lifehack #2: Use eye-tracking software. Even a simple freeware app will help you check if the highlights are in the right places.
If you find that the user’s gaze doesn’t linger long enough on any given element, get to work. Perhaps it’s worth highlighting this element further by making it larger or brighter, adding animation, increasing the font size, and so on. (Test everything!)
Note: Place the main highlight on the emotional trigger, not the CTA button.
All visual composition tricks and instruments must be hierarchically ordered. Shape, color, shade, contrast, size, balance, movement, typography — everything must follow the principle of priority.
Note: Remove distractions. Everything that’s not a first impression priority must have reduced visibility, hidden, or moved elsewhere.

8. Use relevant images

Images are relevant when they match the website’s purpose, idea, and content. Any mismatch between the idea and its visual representation leads to misunderstanding and mistrust. It’s not just out-of-context imagery. A website dedicated to innovation using outdated designs is also an example of irrelevance. Unnecessary wow effects that distract from the message are likewise irrelevant.
The Hero Image must visually convey the essence of the content.

9. Use a short, powerful tagline

Use a short, powerful tagline to engage the user. Coming up with it isn’t as easy as it seems. It’s a creative process. Again, I recommend brainstorming. You have limited character space, yet you need to succinctly convey your values, explain some benefit or problem solution, or ask a related question that will pique the user’s interest. Brainstorming is a great way to find an original idea.

10. Be subtle with your СТА

You may have a great hero image with a good conversion potential, but it will be worthless without a CTA. However, CTA should be approached with caution.
Never use CTA to exert pressure.
Design your CTA to be friendly and non-aggressive rather than demanding. Do not pressure the user into learning everything at once, making purchases, or subscribing. CTA is a logical step on the user’s path toward their goal. If you failed to pique their interest with your tagline and visualization, no CTA button or text will work.
CTA is an organic continuation of your design and business idea. Your visitors are welcome. That’s the point of a CTA button or message: it invites the user to join the action.
Focus your UI and UX on making the user’s goal attractive.
Only then will your CTA be effective. A button motivates no one. People are motivated by ideas and images of the future.
Thanks for reading. Don't forget to follow analyzeoptimize for more such insightful content to grow your online busines.

2024.05.15 17:43 pgj1997 In Animal Crossing, you play as a spiritual being

There's plenty of theories out there that try to explain the reasoning as to why, in Animal Crossing, there doesn't seem to be many humans other than you, the player character. Most of these are, quite frankly, either completely ridiculous, or take huge leaps in logic in order to get thier point across.
However, I recently came up with my own take on this theory, and one that seems pretty believable. You see, we're not actually human, per se. We're actually a spiritual being known as "marebito".
Marebito are creatures from Japanese folklore, and are essentially the equivalent of angels in Christian mythology. To quote Wikipedia, they are "supernatural beings who come from afar bringing gifts of wisdom, spiritual knowledge and happiness."
First off, in Japanese, the official name for your character, as confirmed by Super Smash Bros., is "Murabito". That sounds very similar to "Marebito", now doesn't it? Of course, you can apply wordplay to anything, and it still wouldn't prove anything. Don't worry, I have plenty more evidence to support this.
Notice that you're the only one who actually has any effect on your town/island. You're the only one who's able to do stuff like plant trees, cut them down, or even provide for the local economy. Do any of the other residents help pick up weeds? No. Do they catch and donate anything to the local museum? No. In "New Horizons", do they so much as lift a finger to help clean up the island when you first arrive? No. In "New Leaf", do they help raise money for the all Public Works Projects you place across town? Sort of, but they're only able to put in what amounts to meer pocket change; it would take a ton of deliberate ignorance on your part until they'd manage to pay it off on their own. Most if not all of that is coming from your own pocket. Hell, do they even buy and sell stuff? Again, sort of. In "Wild World" and "City Folk", every few weekends there's "Flea Markets", where you can buy furniture from thier homes. But guess who's the only one who's actually able to buy anything. You. Or if you're in your own house, you can sell your stuff to them. In "New Leaf", there's instead a "Re-Tail" store, where everyone can sell their stuff secondhand. However, your neighbors will only consider buying things here. They never will unless you influence them to.
Sure, you can occasionally see your neighbors holding the various tools throughout the game, but if you follow them around, you'll see that they're never actually capable of using them. With the exception of the watering can, they'll eventually just put it right back. In "New Horizons", you can see them attempt to use the fishing rod and net, but they'll never actually catch anything. They come close to catching bugs with the net, but they'll eventually just miss, and the bug flies away. And with the fishing rod, you can see them cast their line out even if there's no shadow in the water. And on the off chance that there is, the fish never nibble at their lines.
See, since you're a marebito, you've arrived at your town/island, sent here with the mission of making all its residents happy. Creating relationships with them, helping thier little wherever it is grow and expand, and even be a sort of sugar daddy and buy things from and for them just so the economy is nice and steady. You can donate specimens of the local wildlife to the failing museum just so the residents have somewhere fun to go to in their free time. And since most of the animal villagers are herbivores, you're providing them with a source of food, since you're the only one who can plant trees that grow fruit for them to eat.
Okay, that's all fine and good, but why a human in particular? Why not some kind of animal that blends in more? Well first, in the original game, your character always wears a hat with fake bull horns on them presumably for this reason (in later games prior to "New Horizons", these hats are instead the design that the male villager wears when wearing one with a custom design). Secondly, amongst all the other animals, a human sticks out. So when the they need help, or have busywork that needs doing, they have someone they can very easily find who will be more than happy to take the time to do it for them out of kindness. As long as it makes them happy.

2024.05.15 17:42 sockonthetable could i be 9w8?

hi! im pretty new to enneagram and so far i think i might be a 9w8. i filled out the questions in the intro. im hoping to get some help or closure on typing myself. im sorry for the long text in advance lol.
• How old are you? What's your gender? Give us a general description of yourself. Im 15 and a girl, ive doubted my gender few times though i dont really "feel" like a girl or anything and i like it when people mistake me for a man, i mostly identify as i girl cause its the easiest for me. im a pretty average student. i used to be "gifted" or something like that but now im just average (im ok with that). i have a few friends and thats pretty much it.
• Is there a medical diagnosis that may impact your mental stability somehow? no i did visit a psychologist a few times. i stopped because it didnt really help me and i saw no point in it.
• Describe your upbringing. Did it have any kind of religious or structured influence? How did you respond to it? My biological father was mostly absent from my early childhood (since i was 3) and doesnt live with me. pretty soon my mom got a boyfriend and they got married so ive had a step dad since i was 3. im not very close to either of my parents. we dont really show affection much to each other and so on. both of my parents are atheist and my grandparents on my moms side are also atheist. my grandma is a jehovas witness and used to bring me to "church" with her when i was little. i was always very curious about it and i used to think a lot about whether or not god was real and if i should convert. i always came to the conclusion thats hes not real and im atheist. i vividly remember that when i was little my grandpa asked me if he should be christian or not and i asked him if he had time to go to church to which he replied no so i came to the conclusion that he should be atheist too.
• If you had to spend an entire weekend by yourself, how would you feel? Would you feel lonely or refreshed? if i could send my friends videos and texts sometimes then yes. i dont really mind being alone and i can take care of myself. i can entertain myself on my own. i wouldnt feel lonely or refreshed really since being alone is sort of the norm for me. i spend most of my free time in my room alone.
• What kinds of activities do you prefer? Do you like, and are you good at sports? Do you enjoy any other outdoor or indoor activities? i like crafty activities like knitting, crochet, sewing and embroidery. i also like reading, learning about stuff im interested in. this can be pretty much anything, music, film, fashion, philosophy, religion and so on. im not really good at sports. i can still enjoy them though if its with friends and its not too serious or competitive. im not a very competitive person and i dont like the pressure people can create in team sports. i enjoy cycling because its more individual and i can go at my own pace, i dont have to rely on anyone and no one has to rely on me.
• How curious are you? Do you have more ideas then you can execute? What are your curiosities about? What are your ideas about - is it environmental or conceptual, and can you please elaborate? im curious but i usually dont ask people many questions, i can satisfy myself with the answer they give. especially if its something personal, if they dont want to answer or are vague theres probably a reason and i dont want to bother them and make them uncomfortable. i have a lot of things i want to do, such as getting better at playing guitar reading and so on. i usually dont really act on this. not for any particular reason i just cant bring myself to do it. im mainly curious about thing like art and fashion history, philosophy and theology, i also find drugs and their side effects and such interesting. i dont really have many ideas. if they are they are usually conceptual such as songs and paintings.
• Would you enjoy taking on a leadership position? Do you think you would be good at it? What would your leadership style be? i dont really like leadership. i cant imagine myself doing it long term, i wouldnt be able to put up with people that long. i dont like when people complain or ask many follow up questions so that would drive me crazy. although if theres a project or something and no one else wants to lead im willing to do it since stuff still needs to get done. if i was a leader my leadership style would probably be pretty permissive, as long as stuff gets done im okay with pretty much anything.
• Are you coordinated? Why do you feel as if you are or are not? Do you enjoy working with your hands in some form? Describe your activity? id like to think in somewhat coordinated. although i can be clumsy at times. i like working with my hands. i play guitar and i like to knit and crochet.
• Are you artistic? If yes, describe your art? If you are not particular artistic but can appreciate art please likewise describe what forums of art you enjoy. Please explain your answer. I like music a lot, i listen to it a lot and it means a lot to me. ive always found comfort in it. when i was younger i really liked melanie martinez and it was basically all i listened to. now i listen to and im open to many different genres. my favourite genre is probably emo and rock though. i also play guitar and enjoy it a lot. sometimes i write lyrics to song too. i used to draw since i was 6 but when i was 13 i stopped because i started comparing myself too much and it didnt make me happy anymore.
• What's your opinion about the past, present, and future? How do you deal with them? i dont really care much about the past. whats done is done and i cant do anything to change it. its a waste of time to dwell on it too much. of course it is good to reflect and think about your actions once in a while. i dont really care much about the future either. well not mine specifically. i dont have a specific plan or goal for myself. im just gonna see what life brings me mostly. although i do think it is important to think about the future as a society in terms of climate change and similar issues. i care the most about the present since its what i have the most direct impact on. as cheesy as it might sound i sort of just "live in the moment".
• How do you act when others request your help to do something (anything)? If you would decide to help them, why would you do so? depends on if i can do it and if i like the person. if its something like giving them a napkin or something else thats simple then sure why not. if its something like explaining i usually say no because im not really good at explaining and i often dont understand things myself. if i would help someone its usually because i dont have a reason not to. i think its better to be nice if tou can even you don't necessarily like the person cause you can avoid unnecessary conflict that way.
• Do you need logical consistency in your life? not really. i dont care for things being logical and i dont think everything needs a reasoning or to be logical.
• How important is efficiency and productivity to you?im not really efficient or productive myself, so i guess not really. of course if something is urgent ill do it as fast as i can. but otherwise i think there are more important things than that. i think the actual of process of doing something can be enjoyable not just what comes out of it.
• Do you control others, even if indirectly? How and why do you do that? i dont if i control others, im not aware of it at least. i dont think i have that big of an influence on someone else.
• What are your hobbies? Why do you like them? I like to play guitar because i like music and the feeling of being to engage with it more deeply. i also like to sing. i like reading because i think there are many interesting stories to tell.
• What is your learning style? What kind of learning environments do you struggle with most? Why do you like/struggle with these learning styles? Do you prefer classes involving memorization, logic, creativity, or your physical senses? my learning style is mainly verbal. i like to write things down and say then out loud. i usually explain things to myself or i pretend im presenting or explaining what im learning to someone else. i sometimes have trouble with things involving a lot of math and sometimes even logical thinking. i often times cant grasp these concepts cause i cant imagine it in my head. i struggle with learning environments that have a lot of distractions. but i cant focus if its completely quiet i like to play some kind of background noise such as white or brown noise. i like classes involving creativity the most since i can just do anything i want. i dont have trouble with coming up with new things and creative things to do.
• How good are you at strategizing? Do you easily break up projects into manageable tasks? Or do you have a tendency to wing projects and improvise as you go? I usually put off things till the last minute so i dont really have time to strategize most of the time. i just do and think of things as i go. usually this works for me and it doesn't stress me out. i do tend to make plans to be "productive" and break up my work into smaller parts this doesnt really work out for me most of the time though.
• What are your aspirations in life, professionally and personally? i dont have many aspirations or goals. just standard things like to get into college and stuff i dont really know what i want to do yet. im leaving it up for myself in the future to decide what i should do that will fulfill me. my main goal is just to be happy with myself and where i am in life, nothing really specific.
• What are your fears? What makes you uncomfortable? What do you hate? Why? my fear is being completely alone for the rest of my life. and not being happy with myself. although i dont really seek out people and their presence i still like affection and fitting in. i really value my friends and i want to have them along my side. i want to accept myself and who i am. i want to be a version of myself that i like. physical touch makes me uncomfortable, and also verbal affection such as compliments too. i often dont know how to respond. when people hug me i often just stand there and if someone touches me i often immediately try to get away. i dont know how to respond to compliments and verbal affection well, partially because i dont really believe it. i hate dishonest people who cant be themselves and try to be someone else to please others. its very sad for me to watch and i just dont like it in general, it can also get annoying.
• What do the "highs" in your life look like? to be honest i dont think ive ever had a "high". most of the time i just feel mostly neutral. the only "high" i have when im laughing with friends or something.
• What do the "lows" in your life look like? i usually lay in bed all day and dont do anything. i cant even bring myself to shower, eat or brush my teeth. if i eat its usually just plain bread or something that requires no effort. i do have some phases where i cry very often, almost every day. i try to hide either usually and cry when im alone but sometimes its too much and i just cry in front of people. when they ask me if im ok i say yes and i try to deny anything being wrong.
• How attached are you to reality? Do you daydream often, or do you pay attention to what's around you? If you do daydream, are you aware of your surroundings while you do so? i daydream very often. almost every day. if im bored and have nothing to do (i dont have my phone) ill daydream. im aware of my surroundings to some extent. usually im also listening to music while doing this. when i daydream i tend to walk around my room in back and forth. even when im reading a book, watching a film or a tv show i often envisipn myself there and stop watching/reading to imagine myself there and insert myself into the story.
• Imagine you are alone in a blank, empty room. There is nothing for you to do and no one to talk to. What do you think about? i would probably sing to myself and daydream. i dont think i would think about many things to be honest.
• How long do you take to make an important decision? And do you change your mind once you've made it? i havent made many important decisions, but i usually take some time to think it through. i might change my mind afterwards but not do anything about since i already decides and dont want to complicate things. i would probably tell myself its meant to be that way.
• How long do you take to process your emotions? How important are emotions in your life? i usually dont really let my emotions out unless its happiness. emotions are quite important to me. i often base my decisions around them. because i want to be comfortable.
• Do you ever catch yourself agreeing with others just to appease them and keep the conversation going? How often? Why? usually if i disagree i just dont say anything. i dont agree or disagree. if i dont agree and dpnt want to talk to that person then ill just try to politely exit the conversation. i dont feel the need to please others with what i have to say. people have different opinions and thats ok. if im talking about something friends and i disagree im not afraid to say it though. i do try to be polite about it though to avoid conflict.
• Do you break rules often? Do you think authority should be challenged, or that they know better? If you do break rules, why? I dont really break rules. i dont feel the need to. at least i dont do it deliberately. i think authorities should be challenged if theyre unfair and oppressive. if i break rules its because ultimately i can do anything i want. i try to be smart about it and not get in trouble though. if breaking the rules would hurt someone i wouldnt do it.

2024.05.15 17:21 SouthernShape2180 ndtll.dll error in Fallout 4

Hi Everyone. I keep getting CTD on this crashlog. Can someone please help. I think it is a non-mod related issue, but if you could tell me which mods I need to disable in order to fix it, that would be awesome.

2024.05.15 17:18 HappyGoLacky Big Pots and Root Rots - Monstera Mythbusting

Apologies for posting a novella. I’ll probably get downvoted a lot for this post, but almost every every day I see one or more of these big pot comments in response to someones post. So here goes.
So the issue is much more involved than big pots. Healthy and appropriately sized roots are important to a well balanced monstera. There’s also a ton of other factors including, pot material, environment temperature, humidity, repotting stress, and so much more. I just wanted to address the “big pot” thing specifically. As I mentioned at the beginning, a monstera is pretty hardy as long as it’s treated well, but the more you know, the easier it is to make the right decisions for the plant. The good news is that everything I've addressed above, goes for pretty much all plants.
If you believe I've made any errors above, I'm happy to discuss or chat about it. Hope some of you find this helpful.
EDIT: edited for spelling.

Moving can be a stressful time for everyone, including our feline friends. Imagine being whisked away from the comfort of your familiar surroundings to a new and unfamiliar place. As you plan your relocation, it’s essential to consider the needs of your beloved cat to ensure a smooth transition for both of you. That’s why we will give you the best tips for moving with your cat.
Moving with a cat requires careful planning and consideration to ensure their safety and well-being throughout the process. Here are some expert tips for moving with your cat:

Create a Safe Haven:

Before the moving day arrives, set up a safe and comfortable space for your cat in your current home. This area should include their bed, litter box, food, water, and familiar toys to help them feel secure amidst the chaos of packing.

Gradual Introductions:

If possible, introduce your cat to their carrier well in advance of the move. Leave it open with familiar bedding inside, along with treats and toys, to encourage positive associations. Gradually increase the amount of time your cat spends in the carrier to help reduce anxiety on moving day.

Familiar Scents:

When packing your belongings, be sure to leave out familiar items that carry your cat’s scent, such as bedding or blankets. These familiar scents can provide comfort to your cat in their new environment and help them adjust more quickly.

Stick to Routine:

Amidst the chaos of moving, try to maintain your cat’s regular feeding and playtime schedule as much as possible. Consistency can help reduce stress and anxiety for your cat during this transitional period.

Secure Transportation:

On moving day, ensure your cat is safely secured in their carrier before transporting them to your new home. Consider using a pheromone spray or calming collar to help keep them relaxed during the journey.

Comfort in the New Home:

Once you’ve arrived at your new home, create a designated space for your cat with familiar items from their old environment. Allow them to explore their new surroundings at their own pace, and provide plenty of reassurance and attention to help them feel safe and secure.

Patience and Understanding:

Moving can be a challenging experience for cats, and they may exhibit signs of stress or anxiety during the transition period. Be patient and understanding with your furry friend, and give them the time and space they need to adjust to their new home.
Important tips: Hiring movers or DIY?

2024.05.15 17:14 Silhouettesetaway Ok, but what if the S3 musical was Into the woods

There would be less casting drama and no bad accents, plus all the character arcs would be parallel, ie:
FINN AS BAKER Learning that your father is more complex than you thought, learning to live with the past and start a future. Transition into adulthood
MERCEDES AS BAKER’S WIFE Rachel may not like this, so if you need casting drama there it is. But the arc works: finally stepping out from the supporting cast to create your own story. Wanting to be an adult so badly you don’t fully register what that means, starting to get male attention in ways you never expect. Her “Moments in the woods” would be funny and heartbreaking as she reminisces on her summer love with Sam whilst cherishing the support she’s received from her new bf
RACHEL AS CINDERELLA Starting a new and bright future, but realizing some things from the past won’t die. Learning to put her morals above her forward momentum in status. Mommy issues.
SANTANA AS THE WITCH Her “Last Midnight” would kill. Also, being forced to play the heel all your life while all you want to do is protect this one perfect thing. Learning she can’t control people like she thinks she can. Those she loves running away from her (her grandmother). The difference between “nice and good” would be a huge motif in her arc throughout the season
BRITTANY AS LITTLE RED This would be so cute! But, it could also lean into the vaguely hinted at fact that Brit was molested in her early teens. Her new sexual awakening with Santana. She could learn not to trust people blindly, maybe stand up to Sue. She could also learn that people make mistakes, even those she idolizes
KURT AS JACK Wanting to do right by a parent but also wanting to take something for yourself. Sexual awakening with Blaine. Standing up for what’s right while controlling rage
BLAINE AS MYSTERIOUS MAN/NARRATOR Leans into the animosity between Blaine and Finn at the beginning. The narrator being killed could tie in with everyone being sick of Blaine being the new front man of ND. His “No more” could be about loving Kurt freely despite past trauma
TINA AS RAPUNZEL Going crazy being forced to stay in her sordid role as a supporting character. They would do “Our little world” and it would be beautiful
PUCK AS CINDERELLA’S PRINCE/WOLF Learning just how superficial his charm really is. Realizing how inauthentic he’s grown to be would make him want to be more open for the sake of Beth
SAM AS RAPUNZEL’S PRINCE Agony would slap. Also could have an arc where Sam’s superficial attraction to Mercedes turns into genuine love and care
QUINN AS CINDERELLA’S MOTHEGRANNY/GIANT Playing the role of a mother now lost could help her understand what she is to Beth. Also Quinn’s alto would make for a nice giant
SUGAR AS LUCINDA Sugar was made to be a stepsister. Could also help her be less vain by noticing parallels between herself and the character
MIKE AS STEWARD/DANCE CAPTAIN Taking on duel roles as performer and production could create the same arc of his grades dipping and him realizing he wants to focus on dance
ARTIE AS DIRECTOR Same arc of finding your passion behind the scenes
It just works

2024.05.15 17:12 Skybliviwind Wasted Potential For Volume 10

TL;DR: Volume 10 should not have the main cast until the end
I think the thing that RWBY is best at is creating potential for an idea that could be very interesting and novel but also a bit risky and then totally squandering it in favor of something safe but way less interesting.
At the end of volume 9, the tree said to RWBYJ when they asked where they'd be taken "not where, but when you are needed most". See i'm under the impression that dialogue actually matters and that something wouldn't be said if it wasn't important especially if it had that much emphasis on it. To me this seemed to imply that there was some kind of timeskip for when they enter back into Vacuo. Probably a few months at least if it is to have any significance.
To me this presented an opportunity to explore a possibility that would be really interesting. An entire volume 10 without team RWBY or Jaune. An entire volume without the main characters until maybe the last episode or 2. Sure it would be risky and maybe feels like it breaks some rules but volume 9 seemed like it perfectly set up for something like that. We focus on team OWNER (Oscar, Winter, Nora, Emerald, and Ren) with the likely placeholder main character being probably Oscar and show how they cope with the apparent loss of their biggest support team, their best friends, their leader, and Winter's sister.
Also don't make Qrow all cheery for no reason either. If anything this would be a perfect opportunity to explore the darker side of his alcoholism and maybe have him relapse or something. Maybe Willow has something to do with that as well. Quitting alcohol isn't easy and going cold turkey is easier said than done and most often isn't done without a few slipups along the road. Combine that with the fact that he lost his 2 nieces and it would be a perfect opportunity for major character exploration and development and maybe peak into his past a little bit too. The writers really dropped the ball anytime they try to explore heavy topics like racism and wartime sacrifices so this could be an opportunity to finally get it right and this seems relatively easy to get right if you at all know what you're doing.
Explore Oscar's slow battle for control over his own body. What does Raven think about the death of her daughter? Would the news even reach her? Explore the stages of grief from all members of team OWNER along with Sun for Blake as they desperately try to ward off the grimm, look for the summer maiden, find and protect the sword of destruction, deal with the refugee crisis (without all the bullshit and not making the Vacuans one dimensional bad guys), deal with Tyrian and Mercury, let Emerald give him some kind of emotional come to Jesus, and any other conflict the writers might have up their sleeves.
Let these characters really shine when consumed by darkness. Just for one volume. Then at the very end, probably on the last episode but perhaps on the second last episode, only when things get really desperate does the portal bring the main cast to Vacuo. Maybe Ren's life detecting ability makes him spidey sense that Jaune is still alive somewhere nearby sorta like the end of Kung Fu Panda 2 if you've seen it and Ren goes "Jaune is alive" or something and knows where to look.
The volume could take place in the months between when the portal closes at the end of volume 8 to when team RWBYJ's portal opens taking them to Vacuo. That would be an amazing concept to me. But unfortunately, we can't have nice things. When i saw the episode 11 animatic i just facepalmed and thought "of course they fucked it up, how didn't i see this coming?". I mean there was so much wrong with that "episode" that you've probably already heard on here already but i don't think i've heard anyone talk about this. I was rolling my eyes throughout the whole thing but by the end there might've been actual steam coming from my ears. Not just for bringing the main cast back at the very beginning of the volume (well technically not even the beginning but the "end" of volume 9) but also for them coming through Raven's portal or Raven being there in the first place. There are so many reasons that is an awful awful idea, potentially the worst idea in RWBY ever and it's what made me lose all interest in RWBY continuing. I'll make a whole other post later about how much i hate that decision.
But for now, what do you guys think? Am i crazy? Is this a ridiculous idea? Is there something i'm missing? Can this idea be improved or expanded? Or is it even worse than what actually happened. Let me know in the comments. I'd be happy to have feedback on this...
To be honest, this whole idea may have just stemmed from my bias as to how much i hate team RWBY as a team so there's that too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

2024.05.15 17:10 Chen_Geller Tolkien Begginings: the antecedents of Peter Jackson's (and others) Middle-earth

Tolkien Begginings: the antecedents of Peter Jackson's (and others) Middle-earth
I still sit sometimes and chuckle, thinking "When Ralph Bakshi started animating The Lord of the Rings in 1976, did he know what he was going to unleash on the world?" There was also the Rankin/Bass TV special, being developed concurrently, but its the Bakshi film that, in 1979, Peter Jackson saw, and this young Photoengraver would later direct six (!) live-action Tolkien films and, between himself and co-producer Philippa Boyens, are hard to work producing three more such films. Other adaptations since - namely, The Rings of Power (especially Season One) but also games from The Shadow of Mordor to Return to Moria - have at the very least taken cues from Jackson's films. All because a Kiwi photoengraver saw a cartoon....
But the relationship between these properties is not so clear-cut as it may seem. I ednumbered the similarities and dissimilarities between Jacksons' films and The Rings of Power elsewhere. Now I want to delve deeper into the similarities and dissimilarities between Jackson and previous adaptations of Tolkien.

The Rankin/Bass TV Specials

Side-by-side video comparisons between Jackson's films and the two Rankin/Bass TV Specials do not reveal any similarities that don't come from the fact that they're adapting the same books. This is an important point: Jackson is NOT trying to make some post-modern "collage" Hollywood film. He's only tipping his hat to those adaptations of Tolkien that he had seen growing up and that influenced him personally.1
Due to copyright, the Rankin/Bass specials probably didn't air in New Zealand at all, and although it seems Jackson got a hold of the Rankin/Bass The Hobbit before embarking on The Lord of the Rings, he had not seen their Return of the King, certainly before 1999, and neither he nor his close collaborators have made comments about either of the two Specials. By contrast, the (American!) showrunners of The Rings of Power had referenced the Rankin/Bass Specials, and seemingly tipped their hat to it in a set design for season two.2

The Ralph Bakshi film

As I said, Jackson went to see the Bakshi film. He had enjoyed some of Bakshi's previous film, including the Tolkien-esque Wizards, released the previous year, and went to see his latest. At the time he hadn't read the books, making Bakshi's film his first exposure to Tolkien, but he does admit he "heard the name" of the book beforehand. His biography suggests he saw it in late 1978, when it first premiered, but surely it would have arrived at New Zealand in early 1979.3
The connection between the two films had been played up, unsurprisingly, by Ralph Bakshi himself. A leonine, grandiose man, Bakshi is anything but a reliable narrator. His own suggestion that he hadn't actually seen the films - only trailers, he claims - sounds believable enough and certainy understandable.4 But, then, if he didn't watch them, it makes his critique of them as deriviative of his films all the more dubious, even without actually looking at the specifics of what he said:
Look at his Lothlorien. Look at my backgrounds of Lothlorien. Take a look! He had much more to see than I did, and if you don't think he lifted it over and over again, you're wrong. I mean, how did he design a knife in Lord of the Rings? How did he design a sword? How did he design the dwarf with his axe? How did he design the fur around him? Why did Peter Jackson put fur around the dwarf? Because I put fur around the dwarf! Why would the dwarf have fur naturally? You see, I could give you a billion little things. I wish I had a movie to look at.5
These are truly some confused claims, for the most part. The most credible part here is the Hobbits hiding under the branch from the Ringwraiths, a shot composition later to also be replicated in season one of the Rings of Power, and which we'll get to later.
Another claim of Bakshi's that cannot be dismissed out of hand is that, however big or small a debt Jackson owes to his film, he said that Jackson didn't publically acknowledge the influence and felt that it was only appropriate to have welcomed him to visit the set or something: by comparison, Jackson invited Rick Baker, who played King Kong in the 1978 version, to cameo in his King Kong.6
Jackson actually did mention the Bakshi filming in passing in the making-ofs. Then again, he entirely fails to mention the radio serial, either. Ultimately, Jackson possibly in cahoots with New Line Cinema, must have felt it unwise to point to a previous adaptation that had only achieved mixed success, at the outset of his own enterprise. He did talk more about the Bakshi film, and more fondly, in the director's commentary to The Fellowship of the Ring and in a couple of later interviews, which are significant gestures, but he clearly wasn't going to trumpet the influence Bakshi's film had on him off of every rooftop.7
In his 2006 biography, Jackson actually briefly reviews the Bakshi film:
I liked the early part – it had some quaint sequences in Hobbiton, a creepy encounter with the Black Rider on the road, and a few quite good battle scenes – but then, about half way through, the storytelling became very disjointed and disorientating and I really didn’t understand what was going on. However, what it did do was to make me want to read the book – if only to find out what happened!8
This is a complementary but admittedly mixed review, and Jackson had made similar comments since, calling it "brave and ambitious" but consistently decrying the hokum of the film's second half.9 Now, it is true that artists can be influenced by a work of art in spite of themselves, but lets see if we can try and quantify the influence.
From the outset, in the audio commentary, Jackson remarks that "our film stylistically is very different and the design is different," which is apposite: Bakshi swore a debt to Howard Pyle, which certainly leaves its mark of the gorgeous natural bakcdrops, but a source closer at hand (especially considering his follow-up fantasy film, Fire and Ice) is the most popular fantasy illustrator of his day, Frank Frazetta: Bakshi's Witch King is practically ripped from Frazetta's famous "Dark Rider" illustration.10
Jackson's approach, however, was steeped in a kind of romantic realism that by and large eschewed the heightened work of Frazetta, opening a yawning stylistic gulf between his film and Bakshi's on a general level. Bakshi's Hobbit-holes have overhanging roofs that give the impression of fairies living under mushrooms (which they in fact had in his previous film, Wizards) and the interiors of Bag End are earthen, more of a rabbit-hole than Jackson's English countryside villa. There are some similarities, like the Hobbits having similarly-clipped pants, but its hard to say costume designer Ngilla Dickson had Bakshi in mind for that look.
There's the basic structure of the narrative: both films leave some of the same plot beats out - Tom Bombadil, most notably - both intercut the Frodo and Aragorn storylines throughout (as per the appendices rather than the body of the text), and both open with a prologue. However, many of these are common-sense approaches that, if one were to put 100 screenwriters in a room, a good 90 of which would choose to pursue: in fact, Sir John Boorman's earlier Lord of the Rings script had likewise intercut the stories and redacted many of the same episodes as both Bakshi and Jackson, and similar approaches were taken in the 1958 Morton Zimmerman treatment. Certainly, in the case of the choice to pursue a prologue, a precedent closer at hand exists in the form in the 1981 radio serial, a point made all the stronger by the fact that when Jackson first concieved of and sketched the prologue, he hadn't seen Bakshi's film in 20 years.11
Bakshi did claim that New Line were screening his film repeatedly, but author Ian Nathan says that was never the case. Miramax did screen the film for Jackson in 1997, after he'd written the treatment. Jackson's treatment included Glorfindel and Erkenbrand, who in subsequent drafts are replaced by Arwen (Legolas in Bakshi's film) and Eomer, but still I find that it falls more into the realm of common-sense screenwriting decisions than anything that could be tied to Bakshi in a clear way, especially the latter which happens at the end of Bakshi film, a part of the film Jackson admits to have found incoherent.12
Rather, the place to look for similarities between the two projects is in the opening leg of The Fellowship of the Ring. Jackson actually, in the director's commentary, points out the shot of Odo Proudfoot calling "Proudfeet!" as a deliberate homage to Bakshi's shot, "which I thought was great." He doesn't acknowledge a couple - only a couple - of other shots that are quite similar: one is the evocative shot of the Ring tumbling over the rocks in Gollum's cave just before Bilbo finds it. Another still is an entire sequence of shots which misdirect us into thinking the Ringwraiths killed the Hobbits in their beds. Both are a little TOO similar to be waved away as coincidental.13
The Ringwraith shot is a more special case: It was nominally based off of a John Howe illustration, ostensibly of the Bakshi scene. But Jackson - who's quoted review of the Bakshi film mentions this scene - could hardly not notice the similarity to the Bakshi scene, especially since the scene doesn't at all play like this in the novel. What's more, the scene was first storyboared only shortly after Jackson say Bakshi's film for the second time, and shot not too long after that being that it was the first scene filmed. So its only fair to cite Bakshi as an influence on that shot.14

There are other bits and pieces: did Jackson have Bakshi in mind when he added a scene of Saruman rallying up the Uruk-hai before the siege of Helm's Deep? Its hard to say. An even more elusive case is made by Bakshi: "I'm glad Peter Jackson had a movie to look at—I never did. And certainly there's a lot to learn from watching any movie, both its mistakes and when it works." In other words, Bakshi here suggests his film influenced Jackson in terms of what NOT to do. To his credit, Jackson does remember that the design process for Treebeard was in part motivated by trying to divorce him from the Bakshi version, which both him and Dame Fran Walsh remember as being "like a walking carrot." But when we start getting into that level, it all becomes very tenuous. There were a lot of things about the fantasy genre in general - Conan the Barbarian and Willow are oft-cited by Jackson - that he tried to avoid.15
Ultimately, I have to judge that the similarities between the two versions amount to a handful of rather insignificant beats, all in the first hour of Fellowship of the Ring. To hyperbolically play up the similarities between the two projects is to give in to Bakshi's hyperbolic rhetoric.

Tolkien illustrations

Jackson's first and, at the time, only copy of The Lord of the Rings was a tie-in to the Bakshi film. This would mean he hadn't gotten into the world of Tolkien illustrations until developing his own films, when he suggests he went on a detail-exhaustive search for Tolkien art. He had seen Tolkien's own illustrations, but decided that they're "not very helpful in terms of the lighting and the mood."16
The most acclaimed illustrators of the previous era of Tolkien were Pauline Bayens (whose Minas Tirith is reproduced in the Rankin/Bass Return of the King) and the Brothers Hildebrandt, whose bestial Balrog presents a precursor both to Bakshi's but also to the Minotaur-like Balrog of John Howe.17
Howe was one of a trifecta of Tolkien illustrators, along with Ted Nasmith and Alan Lee, to enjoy great vogue at the time when Jackson was developing his films. Of the three, Lee is often deemed the most celebrated and certainly made the biggest impact on Jackson, whose next copy of the book was to be an Alan Lee illustrated edition. But he also noticed Howe through is work on Tolkien calendars, and later also purchased some originals of Ted Nasmith. All three were approached to participate in concept design for the films, although Nasmith sadly had to decline.18
In many places, Jackson precisely copied designs of Lee's and Howe's existing paintings, and in some places carbon copied their lighting and composition for shots, as well as grading the films (before the advent of the latest remaster) somewhat along the lines established in their paintings. But the majority of Lee and Howe's work for Jackson was in producing NEW concept art to his specifications, and so its wrong to look at Jackson's films as being a part of the Lee-Howe ouevure, as such.

The 1981 Radio Serial

A less touted influence on Jackson's film is the superlative 1981 BBC radio serial. Where Jackson hadn't reread the book nor revisited Bakshi's film between 1979 and 1997, he had spent much of the that time listening on-and-off to a tape of the radio serial, usually while working in his garage on special effects.19
The most obvious similarity is the casting of Sir Ian Holm, who had voiced Frodo in the radio serial, as Bilbo. Holm was apparently at the top of Jackson's casting wishlist, partially for this reason. A particularly striking moment occurs when Holm's Frodo quotes Bilbo's "Its a dangerous business Frodo, going out your door: you step on to the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to", a line again given to Holm - now as Bilbo - in voiceover at the same spot in Jackson's film.20
Again, many of the similar structural choices here are similar to Jackson, adding a prologue, contracting the early stages of Frodo's quest and intercutting the Aragorn and Frodo's stories throughout. Brian Sibley admits to have modelled his prologue on Bakshi's own, but Jackson is unlikely to have known it at the time, and when we start thinking in terms of second-hand influences we're again into very tenuous territory. Otherwise, the influence doesn't seem all too great, although Sibley remembers that Walsh, perhaps half-jokingly, told him "we stole your ending" in the way that they did the Grey Havens and then a quick segue to Sam's return home, basically along the lines of the book.21
A young, and already Tolkien-devotee, Sir Ian Holm recording Bilbo
Sibley had recruited his cast from the BBC's company of actors, which is also the troupe Bakshi turned to, meaning that Sibley ended-up with Bakshi's Boromir (Michael Graham Cox) and, notably, his Gollum (Peter Woodthorpe). In spite of Woodthorpe's evocative performance of Gollum's voice in both the Bakshi and Sibley versions, its influence on Andrew Serkis' performance of Gollum is nonexistent, as Serkis had developed the voice before having heard Woodthorpe rendition, having only read The Hobbit prior to being cast.22

Other fantasy films

Jackson had seen pretty much all the fantasy films of the 1980s, and while they were important in terms of establishing the genre, they hadn't left much of an impression on Jackson. The most succesful - George Lucas' Star Wars - was more space-fantasy, undoubtedly impressed Jackson but didn't much influence his films: to this day, he professes to not be a huge Star Wars fan, in spite of the amiacable manner he and Lucas took with each other in later years, and admits that he sees the influence of Lucas more "in what he did for the industry, not in terms of the actual films that he made."23
The first major high-fantasy film, Sir John Boorman's Excalibur, was a little closer to Jackson's heart, but isn't much of an influence on his films either. Its true that Jackson's films feature a lot of plate armour, but that's indebted primarily to John Howe's abiding love of late Medieval armour, and at any rate is quite different to the Enlightement-era suits of armour one finds in Boorman's film. Willow, produced by George Lucas, was a big shot to the arm of New Zealand's fledgling film industry, and like Star Wars is much indebted to The Hobbit, but left a bad impression on Jackson.24
The Clockmaker's Cottage in Sir Ridley Scott's Legend
Two exceptions are to be cited; Ray Harryhousen's stop-motion fantasy films from the 1950s were huge favourites of Jackson's, although their more Graeco-Roman subject matters were a genre apart from Jackson's films. He is also a big fan of Sir Ridley Scott, and while he joins the consensus of deriding William Hjortsberg notorious screenplay, had taken some cues from his Legend (1986): there's something of the Clockmaker's cottage in Rhosgobel, and Jackson referenced some of the features of Tim Curry's devilish "Lord of Darkness" for the Wargs sinewy faces.25

Other films

Jackson took influence from paintings of old battles and landscapes, but surely his biggest influences are other films: Zulu and Saving Private Ryan had been referenced for Helm's Deep, and there's a touch of Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line, which Jackson had watched before principal photography, to the atmospheric shots that close the Fellowship prologue. Jackson admitted to rewatching mostly Scorsese films while shooting, and certainly the energy of his moving cameras find a closer kin in Scorsese's films than in anyone else's. There's something of David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia to Jackson's intention to make living, breathing people out of his fantasy characters.26
Surely the inspiration for the shot of Aragorn arriving at Helm's Deep
But there's one film that looms largest in Jackson's films, overshadowing any influence we're looked at so far: Mel Gibson's latest spectacular, Braveheart. Along with other films of this kind like Dances with Wolves and Rob Roy (Gladiator came too late to much influence Jackson's films) it is of crucial importance to the overall cinematic style of Jackson's films, having come out just as Jackson first started thinking of making an original fantasy film, and winning the academy award for Best Picture before any sustained work was done to develop The Lord of the Rings.27

Conclusions

Any notion that Jackson's films are derivative of previous Tolkien adaptations - namely, Bakshi's - are very much hyperbolic, and stem more from adopting an inflated rhetoric taken by the likes of Bakshi. As an adaptation, Jackson's works are based soley on Tolkien's books, and merely tip their hat occasionally to previous adaptations - and not all previous adaptations, either. Cinematically, they draw rather from other sources: less from other adaptations of Tolkien or other fantasy film (Tolkien-esque or not) and more from historical epics, both from the 1960s but also and especially from the time in which Jackson first started developing his films.
