Drove with an expired license

2024.05.02 21:47 NoInvestigator6109 Drove with an expired license

Throwaway account. Long post but I know all details are necessary for decent advice. I'm looking for second opinions because I am hearing two polar opposite outcomes from others.
The full story: I am an American who moved to Germany last June for a job. I was given a 1 year contract and moved to Bayern where I was given a room in a company workers house with about 6 others. I was offered a permanent contract in February which was great, because my plan is to stay in Germany for my career and eventually become a German citizen. I've been working toward this for several years now.
Earlier this week a coworker called me at midnight asking for a ride. Another coworker who was supposed to pick him up at the train station (we live in extremely rural Bavaria) had a control stop and they asked him to test for marijuana. His piss test failed so they took his keys and drove him about 22km away to the krankenhaus for a blood test. I grabbed the company car to pick the first guy up in the next village 5 minutes away. However I quickly realized the other guy would need a ride from the hospital because it would probably be 2am by the time he finished, and I wasn't sure there would be a cab readily available for less than €100 at that hour (if at all). We picked him up and the cops also took my license (which I thought was a bit odd but I did everything asked). They came back and said my license was expired in Germany and that I committed a criminal act by driving the car to get the guy. So they took the keys to the company vehicle which I had to sign over. He asked me if I had anything to say about the matter. I asked what process was happening, since it wasn't clear if I was getting a ticket, being charged with a crime, or being arrested. He asked if I wanted him to write my question down for the record and I quickly shut up and said I won't say another word without a lawyer. So he filled out a form and said I would get court paperwork in the mail. We asked if they could at least give the 3 of us a ride home because we had been calling people at our house and nobody would pick up or agree to come get us. They said they could not and then left us there. Thankfully there was a cab service but it cost us about €70 to get home.
My understanding of the law previously was that since I was on a limited contract of a year, my Arizona license was valid for the 1 year period, but if I wanted to extend it past a year I would need to go file paperwork to get a German license after 6 months. Since I was only offered a 1 year contract, and I have not been given a signed the permanent contract they offered me in February, I was holding off on getting a German license with the understanding that mine was still valid.
I now understand I broke the law and I plan to plead guilty or whatever the process is. I have not seen a court house since a minor traffic violation a decade ago in the US, and I have not had an accident in 15 years. My criminal record is spotless and I never intended for my license to lapse, I just thought I was helping a coworker out of a shitty spot and my documents were still squared away. I just want to keep my head down, pay taxes, do my job, learn German, and get citizenship one day.
However a Bavarian coworker I know contacted a friend who is a (supposedly good) lawyer and the news was not good. He thinks I am kinda fucked and I am probably looking at the choice between some possible prison time, or a very heavy fine (€4000-6000) plus a license suspension. Back in my state (yes I know this isn't America) the penalty for a first offense of this crime is around €100. The impression I'm getting is it's entirely possible my coworker with a DUI will get off with a minor fee and maybe a month or two of a license suspension, which seems insanely light compared to the picture I'm being given for my violation. On the other hand many of my other coworkers are telling me not to worry, I'm not the first person who has ever done this, and I'm likely going to get a minor fine and maybe a month or two suspension, which I can deal with. My boss doesn't think I did anything seriously wrong since nobody got hurt and the company car was returned the next day. I know I screwed up and I've already filed the paperwork to get my German license as soon as possible so it never happens again.
So am I royally fucked or will this be a minor speed bump I just need to navigate?

Background:
Due to a combination of personal beliefs and disgust with October 7 and the apologetics and reductive discourse around it, I had largely managed to avoid focusing on Israel's war in Gaza, compared to other leftist spaces.
While researching Russian atrocities in Ukraine, I was struck by cognitive dissonance at my empathy for Ukraine compared with my silence on Gaza, especially as apologists for Israel's war in Gaza have persisted in making callous excuses for Israel's unjustly brutal war and overall conduct, which we are complicit in, in contrast to the more positive role of the United States in Ukraine's justified war of self-defense against the Russian invasion.
One of the last straws of my reluctance to criticize Israel is that I have seen too many of my fellow social democrats defend a disproportionately brutal war fueled by reactionary sentiments, waged by a reactionary government, with primarily reactionary allies such as the Republican Party that is lead by Donald Trump and Mike Johnson in the United States, that is antithetical to a faithful commitment to social democratic principles, ethics, and values.
And if these mistaken social democrats and liberals are not defending Israel's war, many of them are carrying water for reactionary attacks on the anti-war protesters by hyperfocusing on transgressions (whether it's bigotry, ignorance, incivility, civil disobedience, etc.) while these protesters are opposing a lopsided conflict.
I am not saying that we shouldn't criticize the truly bad flaws of some protesters (such as actual incidents of antisemitism, pro-Hamas apologia, etc.), but I am saying that we should have a balanced perspective, and I say this because there is a lack of balance on too many social democratic and liberal spaces, hence the ubiquity of callous justifications for Israel's illegal war in Gaza as well as support for crackdowns on campus protests and civil disobedience (e.g. encampments) based on appeals to legalism.
Just like the protests against Israel's war in Gaza, earlier protests from the civil rights and anti-war movements had flaws and utilized tactics that reactionaries were willing to exploit as a pretext for undue repression, as well as mistaken social democrats who were, wittingly or not, carrying water for the reactionaries seeking to repress these protests, enable the continued perpetration of atrocities, and to brainwash or intimidate the masses into believing that there is no alternative to the immoral policies of the government.
As flawed or disruptive as many protesters can be, the anti-war protests of today are overwhelmingly justified, just like the protests against World War I, the Vietnam War, Apartheid South Africa, and the Iraq War.

  2. Using Auto-Betting and Auto-Cashout: For beginners or cautious players, using the auto-bet and auto-cashout features can help manage bets and ensure timely cashouts.
  3. Risk Management: The game's outcome is unpredictable, and strategies like 1.5x (conservative) and 2x (moderate risk) can be effective. High-risk players might chase multipliers of x100, but this is much riskier.
  4. Multi-Bet Strategy: Place two bets with a 2:1 ratio. Cash out the larger bet at a lower multiplier (e.g., x1.5) to cover the smaller bet, and aim for a higher multiplier with the second bet for potential big wins.
  5. Martingale Strategy: This involves doubling your bet after each loss, aiming for a win at a pre-determined multiplier. Start with small bets to manage your bankroll effectively.
  6. d'Alembert System: Increase your bet after a loss and decrease it after a win, based on the principle that each loss brings you closer to a win.
In Aviator, the key is to balance risk and potential reward, adapting your strategy to how the game progresses. Remember, the game's Provably Fair technology ensures fairness, making each round unpredictable and exciting.

Considering buying this
So i came across this jeep grand cherooke while vacationing in daytona beach, its a 2011 grand cherokee with 225k. I drove it and it rides pretty good, no vibrations in the pedals or steering wheel, only thing is we 100% have to change the break. I took a look under the car and in the engine bay and everything is clean and has no signs of leaks of damage. But the milage is bugging me. Would it have been worth?

VANCOUVER, BC / ACCESSWIRE / May 2, 2024 / Faraday Copper Corp. ("Faraday" or the "Company") (TSX:FDY)(OTCQX:CPPKF) is pleased to announce that it has received approval from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management ("BLM") for its Notice of Intent ("NOI") to conduct drilling on eleven drill pads at its Copper Creek Project in Arizona ("Copper Creek").
Paul Harbidge, President and CEO, commented "Approval of the NOI is significant as it allows us to drill high-priority targets above the American Eagle porphyry and in the Rum area. This drilling has the potential to unlock significant value by adding high-grade, near-surface mineralization to the current resource. We are currently evaluating bringing additional drill rigs to the project."

American Eagle Area Overview
The American Eagle area includes numerous breccias mapped at surface (Figures 1 and 2). Historically, this area was drilled by near-vertical holes to define the American Eagle porphyry mineralization at depth. Near-surface breccia-hosted mineralization remains largely untested. Analysis of surface outcrops by portable X-ray fluorescence analyzer1 ("pXRF") returned elevated copper values which, together with copper oxide staining, was used to prioritize drill targets.
Rum Area Overview
The Rum area is located approximately 3.5 km northwest of the Amerian Eagle area. It includes hydrothermal breccias and granodiorite porphyry intruding Glory Hole Volcanics. Copper oxide mineralization is present in porphyry outcrops with a historical drill hole (R-1-1X) intersecting near-surface high-grade mineralization of 48.77 metres at a grade of 1.07% copper from surface (true width is unknown due to the orientation of the drill hole). The drill pads allow testing the extent of mineralization as well as targeting untested breccias in this area.

  • Three new Origins
    • The Technophants and Haruspex of the Cybernetic Creed will guide their flock to the perfect union of flesh and machine.

    • Natural Design - This society is adamant that nature has already created perfection in its people's genetic code. They have long devoted their medical and governmental services to the health and preservation of natural, untouched genome sequences.
    • Obsessional Directive - The primary objective of this Machine Intelligence is the ceaseless production of goods to perpetuate profits, irrespective of their creators being long gone. Nothing can impede their ever-growing production targets.
    • Diplomatic Protocols - Initially designed for cross-cultural interpretation, this Machine Intelligence excelled at translation and protocol support. They can suggest new strategies and calculate odds at a moment's notice.
    • Tactical Algorithms - Initially designed for war games and fleet support, this Machine Intelligence's advanced leader bots primarily aim to generate war strategies and optimize combat performance.

  • Added the ability to select to continue playing as another empire after game over
  • Machines now use modified habitability and lifespan rules rather than largely ignoring them
    • Lifespan:
      • Previous "immortality" mechanics machine leaders had, where they frequently died in random accidents, have been removed.
      • Machine leaders have a starting age of 5-10 years, a base lifespan of 100 years (robots have a base of 80 years), and are affected by lifespan boosting effects.
      • Both biological empires going Synthetic and Machine empires will reset their age upon completing Ascension to reflect receiving their new bodies.
      • Gestalt councilors remain immortal.
    • Habitability:
      • Machines (and robots) have replaced their +200% habitability with a habitability floor of +50%.
      • Machines, assuming they do not take a habitability restricted origin like Life-Seeded, have Dry, Wet, or Cold habitability traits, which grant +75% habitability on planets of the appropriate type and +50% on all others.
    • These changes have allowed us to enable a number of previously locked Origins for Machines:
      • Life-Seeded
      • Ocean Paradise (Subaquatic Machines)
      • Post-Apocalyptic (Radioactive Rovers)
      • Void Dwellers (Voidforged)
      • Subterranean (Subterranean Machines) - Note that the habitability floor from Molebots stacks with the habitability floor of Machines, granting them a habitability floor of 100% and thus perfect habitability everywhere.
  • Machine empires can now assimilate other Machines into their primary species, so you can finally force everyone to use the same operating system and charging standard.
  • Robots (but not machines) are all treated as different sub-species of the same robot species.
  • Added a familiar Friend after you explore Astral Rifts.(Requires Astral Planes)
  • Added two new Machine Civics:

Now I’m passing this over to Alfray to give some more information on how to go about using some of the new features as a modder.

More Modding Documentation

3.12 and The Machine Age have added a large amount of functionality which translates into a massive amount of modding improvements, due this we won’t be going into detail but give examples of various feature that can be used by modders.

Crisis Paths (Requires Nemesis or The Machine Age)

In 3.12, we’ve added functionality to define multiple crisis paths. Where previously the Become the Crisis ascension perk would simply have the effect of "activate_crisis_progression = yes", making use of the Crisis Levels, Objectives and Perks defined in their respective script files, now the effect instead uses activate_crisis_progression = . This allows multiple crisis paths to be defined, each with their own resource, objectives and perks (or even sharing any of these as you see fit).
Crisis paths are defined in the common\crisis_paths\ folder, for which the documentation is embedded below.
# CRISIS PATHS # When a player selects the Become the Crisis perk they also get to select a crisis path that determines the crisis levels that they'll have to achieve. # Levels are achieved and unlocked in the order they are scripted. # Note: it's recommended to have 5 levels for each path, or the UI will look misaligned. # # path_name = { # crisis_currency = "" # Name of the resource that will be gained by the objectives and used as requirement to unlock levels. # # The resource will need to be defined in common/strategic_resources. # # This resource name will also be used to select the loc strings to be used in the crisis view. # # In cybernetics_l_english there is a block of loc keys that lies under 'CRISIS UI' that can be used as reference # # levels = { # crisis_level_1 # The levels that the player will have to achieve. These are displayed in the Crisis tab. # crisis_level_2 # These are read from common/crisis_levels. # } # # objectives = { # crisis_objective_1 # The objectives that will give a player Crisis Currency when completed. # crisis_objective_2 # These are read from common/crisis_objectives. # } # }

Authority Swaps (No DLC lock)

Back in Dev Diary #336 and Dev Diary #337, we detailed some of the Advanced Authorities available to the Cybernetic and Synthetic Ascension Paths in The Machine Age.Authority Swaps (No DLC lock)
# These may be overwitten in an "extendable" manner, meaning (for example) you can create a second "auth_democratic" with extra swaps in it. # WARNING: The extend functionality breaks if you make changes in runtime and will require a restart to work correctly. #auth_example = { # potential = {} # requirements list, see ../readme_requirements.txt # possible = {} # requirements list, see ../readme_requirements.txt # random_weight = { value = 1 } # random weight, no scope; default: 1 # # traits = { trait = tait1 trait = tait2 } # force listed traits on the founder species (only verified for empire designs, no effect after game start) # # has_heir = yes / no # default: no; you can either have a hereditary system (has_heir = yes), or an election system (has_heir = no) # election_type = oligarchic / democratic / none # default: none; oligarchic generate candidates only from leaders in the country # election_term_years = 40 # default: 0 # election_term_variance = 10 # default: 0; actual election term = election_term_years +/- election_term_variance # re_election_allowed = yes / no # default: no # can_have_emergency_elections = yes / no # default: no # max_election_candidates = 5 # default: -1; -1 == no limit # can_reform = yes / no # default = yes, whether you can reform into/out of this government type # ruler_council_position = <> # decides the authority's ruler council position, these are defined in 00_councilors.txt # # has_agendas = yes / no # default: no, replaced with Council Agendas # uses_mandates = yes / no # default: no, replaced with Council Agendas # # advanced_authority_swap = { # To make sure everything is updated correctly after triggering a swap, use  # name = "" # Will also be used to attempt and find an icon from "interface/icons/governments/authorities/" # description = "" # Used to customize the description in the case of a swap # inherit_icon = yes/no # Decides if we should inherit the icon of the original authority # inherit_effects = yes/no # Decides if we should inherit the modifiers from the base Authority and combine it with the advanced authority # ruler_council_position = <> # Used to swap out the ruler council position # trigger = {} # This will decide when the swap to advanced authority type will be made # modifier = {} # The modifiers that are used instead of the authority after the swap, can include the original by using inherit_effects # tags = {   } # Translation tags used for the authority swap # has_heir = yes / no # you can either have a hereditary system (has_heir = yes), or an election system (has_heir = no) # election_type = oligarchic / democratic / none # oligarchic generate candidates only from leaders in the country # election_term_years = 40 # # election_term_variance = 10 # actual election term = election_term_years +/- election_term_variance # can_have_emergency_elections = yes / no # # max_election_candidates = 5 # -1 == no limit # weight = {} # If there are multiple options, the one with the highest weight is picked. Scope: Country # } # # tags = {   } # add these translation tags to the description #}
As an example, here’s the base Imperial Authority with the Imperial Feedback Advanced Authority obtained via Synthetic Ascension.

As you can imagine, these function much how tradition swaps function and offer a great deal of flexibility.

Reactive Portraits (No DLC lock)

Reactive portraits and the paperdoll layering system they use were explained in Dev Diary #342, so here I’ll take the opportunity to showcase how these are handled in script. Using the Cybernetic Elf portrait as an example.
https://preview.redd.it/79fyduu7pxxc1.png?width=1274&format=png&auto=webp&s=3850cf501b3db9e738f5be4eb5a72b11aec49953
PORTRAIT SCRIPT FOR CYBERNETIC ELF FEMALE
cyb8_f = { entity = "cybernetics_01_portrait_08_f_entity" clothes_selector = "cybernetics_clothes_08_f" attachment_selector = "no_texture" greeting_sound = "machineage_portrait_cybernized_08_f" character_textures = { "gfx/models/portraits/cybernetics/cybernetics_portrait_08_f_blue.dds" "gfx/models/portraits/cybernetics/cybernetics_portrait_08_f_green.dds" "gfx/models/portraits/cybernetics/cybernetics_portrait_08_f_red.dds" } custom_close_up_position_offset = { x = -20 y = 260 } custom_close_up_scale = 1.80 portrait_evolution = { evolution_stages = { # cybernetization stages { values = { # stage 1 variant 1 { decal = "gfx/models/portraits/cybernetics/cybernetics_portrait_08_f_stage_1_decal.dds" mask = "gfx/models/portraits/cybernetics/cybernetics_portrait_08_f_stage_1_mask.dds" } } #leader, pop or species scope (when called with species scope, from subscope can contain a country species related to) trigger = { has_cybernetization_stage_1 = yes } } { values = { # stage 2 variant 1 { decal = "gfx/models/portraits/cybernetics/cybernetics_portrait_08_f_stage_2_decal.dds" mask = "gfx/models/portraits/cybernetics/cybernetics_portrait_08_f_stage_2_mask.dds" } } #leader, pop or species scope (when called with species scope, from subscope can contain a country species related to) trigger = { has_cybernetization_stage_2 = yes } } } } }
SCRIPTED TRIGGERS FOR CYBERNETIC REACTIVE PORTRAITS
#leader, pop or species scope (when called with species scope, from subscope can contain a country species related to) has_cybernetization_stage_1 = { OR = { AND = { is_scope_type = leader OR = { has_trait = leader_trait_limited_cyborg has_trait = leader_trait_ritualistic_implants_cyborg } } AND = { OR = { is_scope_type = pop is_scope_type = species } OR = { has_cybernetic_creed_trait = yes has_trait = trait_limited_cybernetic } } } } #leader, pop or species scope (when called with species scope, from subscope can contain a country species related to) has_cybernetization_stage_2 = { OR = { AND = { is_scope_type = leader exists = owner owner = { is_cyborg_empire = yes } has_trait = leader_trait_cyborg } AND = { OR = { is_scope_type = pop is_scope_type = species } has_trait = trait_cybernetic } } }
As the reactive system only depends on various triggers, this isn’t required to be linked to an Ascension Path even though that was our intention for it. Additionally, due to the flexibility of scopes allowed for these triggers, reactive portraits can range from generalised customisation to incredible specific (e.g. the Chosen One God-Emperor having a unique mask/decal displayed).

Portrait Sets, Categories and Species Classes (No DLC lock)

Prior to 3.12, each Species Class had a list of portraits (and conditional portraits) defined, with 3.12 this is changing so that each Species Class will have a defined Portrait Set and that Portrait Set will have a list of portraits and conditional portraits. However, for the purposes of showing portraits in empire creation, there are also Portrait Categories. This system allows us to class the new cybernetic and synthetic humanoid portraits in the Humanoid species class while still adding their own entries in the empire creation screen to showcase the new reactive portraits.

Game Selection Diversity

Selecting a crypto casino with a diverse range of games guarantees that there's something for every player's taste. I've found that the variety—from slots and table games to live dealer experiences—keeps gameplay exciting and tailored to personal preferences. Partnering with high-quality game providers like NetEnt and Microgaming means these casinos offer premium, diverse titles.
I particularly enjoy that they continuously update their libraries with fresh games, ensuring there's always something new to try. Also, the inclusion of niche categories like progressive jackpots and themed games adds an extra layer of fun. It's important for me that a casino doesn't just stick to the classics but rather embraces a broad spectrum of gaming options.

Bonus Terms Clarity

After exploring the diverse game selection, it's equally important to grasp the clarity of bonus terms offered by crypto casinos. Clear bonus terms guarantee I know exactly what the wagering requirements are, when the bonus expires, and which games I can play using the bonus. This transparency helps me make informed decisions about whether to claim a bonus and how to meet its conditions.
It prevents any misunderstandings or disputes with the casino, ensuring a smoother gaming experience. By understanding specific bonus conditions, I can assess its true value and decide if it aligns with my gaming preferences. Ultimately, clear bonus terms enhance my overall casino experience by setting explicit guidelines for bonus utilization.

Security Measures

Security measures are an important factor I consider when choosing a crypto casino offer. I look for casinos that protect my data with SSL encryption, ensuring both my personal and financial information are secure.
I also value platforms that require two-factor authentication, providing an additional layer of security against unauthorized access. It's essential that the casino conducts regular security audits and maintains certifications that uphold industry standards.
I prefer casinos that use cold storage for cryptocurrency funds, greatly reducing the risk of hacking. Finally, a casino that complies with regulatory authorities and holds proper licenses shows a commitment to security and fair play, influencing my choice significantly.

Withdrawal Speed

Withdrawal speed is an essential aspect I consider when evaluating crypto casino offers, as it affects how quickly I can access my winnings. The variance in withdrawal times can range from instant to several days, depending on several factors.
The efficiency of the casino's internal processes, the current congestion on the blockchain network, and the specific verification requirements all play vital roles. I've noticed that casinos leveraging cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum often offer faster withdrawals due to their more efficient blockchain technologies.
Additionally, casinos with automated systems typically deliver funds more swiftly. It's important for me to review each casino's withdrawal policy to understand the expected wait times for different cryptocurrencies.

Crypto Payment Options

When choosing a crypto casino, I carefully consider the variety of payment options available, focusing on popular cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin.
I also check if they accept stablecoins like USDT, DAI, or USDC, which offer more stability in wagering values.
The appeal of crypto payments lies in their ability to facilitate faster transactions with markedly lower fees than traditional banking methods. This isn't just convenient; it's cost-effective.
Additionally, the privacy and security enhanced by the decentralized nature of blockchain are paramount for me. Plus, these casinos' global accessibility means I don't have to worry about currency conversion, making it easier to play from anywhere.

Licensing and Regulation

Licensing and regulation are vital as they guarantee a crypto casino operates legally and upholds strict industry standards. When I'm choosing where to place my bets, I always check if the casino is monitored by reputable bodies like Curacao eGaming, Malta Gaming Authority, or the UK Gambling Commission. These organizations ensure the casino adheres to fair gaming practices and player protection measures.
I make it a point to verify the casino's licensing details to make sure I'm playing in a secure environment. Steering clear of unlicensed casinos is important because they often lack the necessary safeguards, exposing players to potential fraud and unfair games. Always play it safe by choosing a well-regulated venue.

Mobile Compatibility

As I explore crypto casino options, mobile compatibility is a key factor that guarantees I can enjoy games smoothly on my smartphone or tablet. Responsive design isn't just a necessity; it's essential for seamless navigation and peak functionality.
Whether I'm in line at a coffee shop or on a long commute, the convenience of mobile-friendly casinos means I'm never far from my favorite games. These optimized mobile versions make sure I've access to a wide range of casino games, which is vital for a modern gaming experience.
Since preferences vary widely among players, the ability to cater to mobile users isn't just helpful—it's critical.

Promotional Variety

Promotional variety is vital in choosing a crypto casino. Diverse offers like welcome bonuses, cashback, and tournaments greatly enhance my gaming experience. Each casino curates unique promotions to captivate different players.
I'm particularly drawn to no-deposit bonuses and reload bonuses, which let me play more without risking extra funds. Loyalty programs and VIP rewards give long-term benefits that make sticking to one casino more rewarding.
Seasonal promotions and special events tied to holidays or significant dates also keep the gameplay exciting and dynamic. It's essential that I find a casino that tailors these offers to my gaming preferences and budget, ensuring every session is as thrilling and effective as possible.

Conclusion

It's important to evaluate their licenses, game variety, and user security before jumping in.
Remember, a trustworthy crypto casino not only enhances your chances of winning but also guarantees a safe gaming environment.
So, whether you're a seasoned gambler or a curious newbie, these platforms might just be your best bet for an exciting and secure crypto gaming experience.

Cost of Irish reunification overblown and benefit underplayed
If done properly, redistribution will be from rich to middle and poor, not from the South to the North, academics argue
The ARINS/Irish Times surveys published last December suggested that perceptions of the economics of reunification will affect some voters in future referendums. Currently Northern Protestants are pessimistic, Northern nationalists optimistic, while a majority of Southerners believe there will be short-run costs but long-run benefits.
Some intellectuals, by contrast, are outright doomsters.
In Oliver Goldsmith’s The Deserted Village the “boding tremblers” feared reading “the day’s disasters” in the morning face of their schoolmaster. Today’s boding tremblers are told to fear decades of disaster in accounting notes from economists John FitzGerald and Edgar Morgenroth. Their suggestion implies that Irish reunification will lead to the mutual ruin of the North and the South (see their IIEA report titled “Northern Ireland Subvention: Possible Unification Effects.”)
In their IIEA report titled “Northern Ireland Subvention: Possible Unification Effects”, economists John FitzGerald and Edgar Morgenroth focus on two fears: the possible transfer of the bulk of the UK’s current “subvention” of Northern Ireland to Ireland as a whole, including Northern Ireland’s imputed share of UK public debt; and the cost of increasing currently lower public sector wages, pensions, and benefits in the North to match those in the Republic.
Our view is much more positive, on evidence of work published under the auspices of ARINS (Analyzing and Researching Ireland North and South). And our view is more political – in a positive sense.
Subverting the subvention
The “subvention” is the UK’s official estimate of the gap between what is allegedly raised in taxation and what is allegedly public expenditure in the North. Our use of allegedly is deliberate.
It is widely accepted, including by FitzGerald and Morgenroth, that the UK estimates undercount what is raised in taxation in the North because many firms report their Corporation tax and VAT receipts to London, at their headquarters.
On the other side of the ledger, the UK estimates overcount public expenditure in Northern Ireland because they include a measure of average public expenditure per head across the whole of the UK, and then impute a share to Northern Ireland – though such monies may not be spent there.
We are not claiming that there is no subvention, but it should be decomposed and exposed to strong light. The residue when that is done, is much, much less.
The largest single element of the actual subvention is the cost of public pensions, perhaps £3.5 billion per year. But Ireland has no liability for UK public pensions incurred before the appointed day on which reunification occurs. The UK does.
People who have worked part or all of their working life in the UK, but who live in the Republic, Spain, or the US, currently receive their UK public pensions, according to the number of years they worked and contributed.
The doomsters fear that no law obliges the UK to pay public pensions, funded out of current governmental revenues or borrowing – but for which people have paid national insurance contributions. This fear should cause no one to go weak at the knees.
The UK Parliament can legislate as it pleases, without constitutional constraint, but the UK has been in the habit of paying its citizens their pensions. Those born in Northern Ireland are British citizens, or Irish citizens, or both, under the provisions of the Good Friday Agreement, and may remain so. That agreement is entrenched in two treaties – the original British-Irish Agreement (1999), and the EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement (2020).
The most ardent anglophobe, scouting the horizon for Albion’s next perfidious act, must acknowledge that the UK is paying its debts, including its pension debts, to the European Union. The fear of non-payment of pension obligations is a mistaken anxiety.
Terminating payments of UK public pensions for former veterans, police, nurses, and teachers with full British citizenship rights would have devastating reputational disadvantages. It would be political folly.
The reasonable conclusion is that those receiving UK pensions would continue to do so the day after unification. And for those in work in Northern Ireland, on the appointed day, their future public pensions would be determined by their past UK contributions (for which they would get a future UK pension, if they have paid sufficient contributions) and their Irish contributions to an Irish pension going forward.
The next largest subvention item is Northern Ireland’s imputed share of the UK’s national debt, estimated at £1.6b per annum.
The UK, however, is legally responsible for the UK’s debts, eg, to bondholders. Not Northern Ireland, and not a united Ireland. If the UK tries to insist in future negotiations that Northern Ireland’s share of its debts should be transferred, then Ireland can simply refuse. No provision in the Good Friday Agreement obliges Ireland to accept any UK debt in the event of unification.
The IIEA report claims that the debts and assets of the USSR were divided up between the various post-Soviet states. That is misleadingly inaccurate, but we don’t suggest this big mistake was deliberate. The Russian Federation actually agreed to accept responsibility for the entirety of Soviet debt; and all the other ex-Soviet republics began life debt-free. Among other reasons, Russia agreed this settlement to confirm its “successor status” to the USSR, and to keep its UN Security Council seat. We suspect Great Britain will be keen to keep its successor status to the UKGBNI.
The doomsters also make too much of past UK history. In 1921 Ireland was negotiating its secession under duress from the UK, and in 2014 the SNP was negotiating the right to hold a referendum on independence. Debt was part of these negotiations because the London government had the power to insist upon it.
Under the Good Friday Agreement, majorities, north and south, determine whether there will be a united Ireland. No qualifying phrase states, “subject to debt discussions.” The Agreement is enshrined in UK law, and in international treaties – including that recently ratified between the UK and the EU, with which the UK wants better relations.
These observations reveal how doomsters underestimate Ireland’s future bargaining power.
Imagine a Westminster government threatens the public pensions of the Northern Irish unless it gets “its debt” repaid. One of Ireland’s immediate responses would be: if you insist that we accept Northern Ireland’s share of UK debt, then Northern Ireland must also receive its full proportionate share of UK public assets, eg, future North Sea oil royalties and tax revenues, the capital value of all public properties, the assets of the royal family, public assets held outside these islands, and Northern Ireland’s share of all public art held in Great Britain.
Another would be to call in aid our US and EU friends, and observe the UK’s legal failure to permit the exercise of Irish self-determination, North and South, “without external impediment.”
We believe the rational UK option will be that of the Russian Federation, the “zero-option.” Immobile assets will stay where they are, and existing debts will stay with the relevant sovereign government. That will ease future relations between Great Britain and Ireland, and UK relations with the EU and Irish America.
The third largest item in estimates of the subvention is Northern Ireland’s imputed share of the UK’s defence budget, over £1 billion pa. But UK defence expenditure – including nuclear weapons, naval bases, army camps, air force bases, and the salaries of soldiers, sailors, pilots, and Ministry of Defence officials – is overwhelmingly incurred in Great Britain or UK bases outside these islands.
Under Irish unification, there will not be anything like the future level of defence spending in Northern Ireland imputed in the subvention estimates.
In calculating the subvention Northern Ireland is allocated an implied contribution to the costs of government departments providing UK-wide services. These offices, however, are overwhelmingly based in England, and taxes paid by their employees are credited to the English region in which they work or live. In a united Ireland the taxes of equivalent employees would be paid in Ireland.
The real subvention of the North required under unification will therefore be radically less than FitzGerald and Morgenroth imply. We do not have to accept their pessimistic arithmetic or assume that Ireland must fold like a weakling in negotiations over the transfer of sovereignty.
Costs and benefits of transition
FitzGerald and Morgenroth honestly declare that in their IIEA note, “no account is taken of the wider effects of Irish unification.” We agree. Their “Note” is confined to adding the costs of hiking public sector wage bills in the North and upgrading Northern welfare benefits to their worst-case scenario on pensions and debts.
Mike Tomlinson’s recent ARINS contribution explored the impact of Northern Ireland joining the tax and social security system of the Republic. He estimated that the average employee at every income level up to the 70th decile (ie, except the 30 per cent of highest earners) would have between €12 and €19 per week in additional take-home pay – primarily because of lower social security/PRSI payments by low to middle income earners. However, the state would still collect €769 million more income annually because of higher taxes on higher earners and greater employer contributions to social security.
Collectively these adjustments, and other minor savings, would reduce the annual subvention of the North by the rest of Ireland on day one of a united Ireland to around €1.3 billion. The figure would rise to €4.8 billion if and only if the UK reneges on its pension responsibilities, which we have just suggested is unlikely.
There will of course be transitional costs attached to unification – and the public in the Republic know that; and it is willing to invest portions of budgetary surpluses in Irish sovereign wealth funds to prepare for such costs. It should be possible, in the time available before reunification referendums, to build sufficient capacity in an Irish sovereign wealth fund to address these costs, an idea to which ARINS surveys show the public is open.
Moreover, the calculations in the IIEA note seem to include the full cost, before tax, of increasing public service salaries in the North to the higher southern levels, without any allowance for taxes collected from Northerners. However sums from those taxed at the higher rate, along with all-island PRSI, USC and pension contributions, would offset some of the costs – we believe as much as half of the amount suggested.
Dynamic considerations
In any case, the economics of Irish unification is not just a matter of arithmetic accounting and the transfer of liabilities (and assets), as all professional economists know.
The key question is whether a united Ireland will be a more dynamic economy for all of Ireland, ie, including Northern Ireland. In comparison to a Northern region that stays in the UK (outside the EU)—'shackled to a corpse,’ as the Brexiteers used to say.
Currently, the North’s economy, especially its private sector, is much weaker than the Republic’s. But comparatively it is in better shape than East Germany was in 1990, and the Republic, however we measure matters, is significantly richer per head than West Germany was in 1990.
Jobs based on Foreign Direct Investment in the North are a fifth of the level in the South, after allowing for population size. Tourism revenues are at a similarly low level. Adel Bergin and Seamus McGuinness have shown that productivity levels per worker, the main driver of wage levels, were very similar North and South in 1998, but are now forty per cent higher in the Republic (even allowing for the distorting impact of the multinational sector).
We should all agree with FitzGerald and Morgenroth that better educational and skills attainments, more foreign investment, EU membership, and sustained political stability help explain the growing North-South gap in economic performance, and between Ireland and all regions in Great Britain outside London. We should also agree that the North’s economic performance can improve before unification.
But we should also ask: are the people of the North incapable of catching up on the performance of the Republic – under the same laws and incentives?
It is not hyper-optimistic to believe that if reunification extended demonstrably successful Southern economic and educational policies across the island, then Northern Ireland would benefit, with or without a devolved government. If the North’s economy begins to be like that of Cork and Kerry, private sector wage levels and tax revenues would rise, and after transition, pay its own way.
There may be other benefits: Belfast is still large enough to become a high-performing second city again, relieving congestion inside the M50. The West and Northwest will be more attractive regions for development without any border, or border functions. Long-limited all-island market integration should see a step-up in performance.
In short, it rational to believe that the whole island will benefit from the Republic’s policies in the long term. Yes, there will be uneven development – there always is. But redistribution, done properly, will be from rich to middle and poor, not from the South to the North.
The costs of unification are therefore overdone, and the benefits often underplayed.
Doomsters should be free to dislike the prospect of a united Ireland, but, on current evidence, they are not right to suggest it is likely to lead to the mutual ruin of the North and South.
The manufacture of “boding tremblers” should give way to the mature preparation required by current and future Governments of Ireland.
That will include deciding what health service system(s) to apply in the event of unification (and before). We suspect that health economics will matter more in deciding future referendums and the trajectory of reunification than anything related to the subvention, pensions, and debt.
John Doyle is Professor of Politics and Vice President for Research at Dublin City University.
Brendan O’Leary is Lauder Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania. The paperback edition of his Making Sense of a United Ireland is published in May.
The authors are founding members of the ARINS project (Analyzing and Researching Ireland North and South), a joint initiative of the Royal Irish Academy and the University of Notre Dame. Not all members of ARINS favour Irish reunification, but some do.

2024.05.02 04:19 Silverado21rst Is chapter 7 possible? Over median income.

I’ve been following this group for a few months now searching posts to see what my options are. Finally talked with my wife and said it’s time to talk to an attorney to see what our options are.
So I found my self with a small gambling problem. Making online casinos a thing has to be the worst. Also I live in a state ( Pennsylvania) where every bar and gas station you go into has “skills” machines. So yes some of mine/our debt is from gambling.
My main question: is it possible to file a chapter 7 in our situation being over median and saving our house.
Here are some rough figures I put together the other day.
So after all of that we would be left with around $401 dollars a month. But I can figure in prescriptions we have, vehicle maintenance, entertainment, etc.
What do you think?

2024.05.02 04:17 ConcentrateDouble578 Buying a mustang

I am about to buy a mustang from a dealership in CA, I just have a few questions and would like your opinions, I am an international student and this is my first car in the US, it is a 2018 mustang driven 88k miles for 16998, is it worth the price? Is it good value?
Other than that I asked for the total cost, and they added 299 for accessories, 85 for document prep, 625 for license/title, and 1434 sales tax and 9 for tire fee, and they’re also charging 8.25% CA Tax which is 2153
Are all these costs justified or are they scamming me? Can I ask them to remove any of these costs?

2024.05.02 02:39 Other-Praline-1885 Seeking Advice: Navigating Career Transitions, Debt Management, and Relationship Dynamics. Need Guidance.

34 F
I've been on quite a ride for the last 3 years, and I'm wondering if I made a big mistake. I worked full-time in real estate at a PropTech company for the last 8 years. Until 2023, I was in Sales as an investment specialist, buying properties for fix and flip with institutional money. When the market started to change, I was laid off, leading to three more layoffs as I hopped from one PropTech company to another between 2021 and 2023. I spent 6 months unemployed in 2023, during which I depleted my savings. Due to the nature of sales roles, it took time to ramp up, resulting in lower commissions and difficulty saving. In October 2023, I made the difficult decision to leave real estate sales and allow my license to expire due to the expenses and burnout.
Since 2020, I've been involved as a community member in three large development projects in my area. I thought transitioning to project management in construction and development would be productive. After a desperate 6-month job search, I took a job as a Project Assistant in the Planning and Construction Department for the state in October 2023. The pay is much less than what I was used to, but it aligns with my current skill set and location according to various calculators. I've been in this role for a little over 6 months now, and while the work is challenging, I find it gratifying. I love the projects I work on and enjoy learning about the development process and construction. Additionally, I appreciate my boss's mentorship, as she is the most competent person I've ever worked for. One of the reasons I chose this position is my commitment to avoiding further debt. A benefit of the job is a 90% reduced tuition at any state university. With my Bachelor's in Public Policy and Public Service, I plan to pursue Masters in Real Estate Development and Construction Management. With on-the-job training and networking opportunities, I aim to advance into senior leadership within the next decade.
Currently, I earn $57k, but 13% goes towards the pension fund, leaving me with roughly $49,500 before taxes. After deductions for taxes, health insurance, FSA, and parking, my net income is around $3000 a month. I live alone in a 2-bedroom condo that I own. My mortgage is $912 a month, with an HOA fee of $300, though I'm paying $474 this year to catch up on missed payments from 2023. I have significant debt: $44k in personal loans, $50k in student loans, $15k to the IRS, $14k in credit card debt, and a $167k mortgage. I'm current on everything except the credit cards, which accumulated due to past struggles with addiction and Bipolar 1 disorder. While not excuses, I take full responsibility and am committed to resolving these issues.
I have a side hustle managing a real estate agent's sales pipeline and social media, earning around $400 a month. I also design and manage small renovation projects for friends for a flat fee, although these are infrequent. Recently, I became involved in a HOA dispute regarding major plumbing repairs, adding to my workload.
I'm hesitant to take on more work as I'm already managing 5 capital projects alongside my side jobs. Ignoring the credit card debt is not sustainable; eventually, I'll face legal action. With only $50 in leeway in my budget and no savings, I'm uncertain about my options. I'm considering selling my home, but renting in this city would likely cost more than my current mortgage and HOA combined.
I'm in a relationship with a man I've known for 13 years, and we've been dating for 10 months. Despite my past, he accepts and supports me, and we're both working on healthier habits. We're not living together, as he owns his own home, but we're committed to each other. Though I have some shame about my financial situation, I know he loves me. With little close family for guidance, I'm left wondering if I'll ever recover from this and what steps to take next.

2024.05.02 00:50 BroncoCountry7 I want to give my daughter my car that is titled in Colorado. She lives in NJ. Process for her to title car in NJ?

My daughter is moving from Colorado to NJ to go to school. Part of establishing residency in NJ is registering her car in NJ, in her name. She has been driving one of my cars here in CO. When she moves to NJ this summer, I want to gift her the car (or sell it for a dollar), and let her register it in NJ. I currently own the car and have the title in hand.
Rummaging around the NJ MVC site, it looks like she could possibly do the "move to NJ" single visit to the MVC for both car registration and driver's license. I see a long list of documents she will need including Vehicle Registration Application and Universal Title Application.
Questions:
1 Obviously I sign the title over to her. But do I create a bill of sale here in CO or NJ? I reside in CO.
  1. Will she need to pay sales tax on the $1? If I gift it to her, does this remove the sales tax paperwork? I don't even see a form for the sales tax, just a phone number to call to calculate the tax.
  2. It looks like she needs to have an address and maybe an current lease to show for the DL.
  3. There is also this requirement : "A purchase order if there is no New Jersey Dealer Tax Stamp on the assigned title." I can't figure out how to get that or if I need it?
  4. If I gift her the car, should I still do a bill of sale for $0?
I won't be there in NJ when all this happens, so I'm just trying to get her as organized as possible.
Possible sequence:
  1. Daughter moves to NJ/gets address and proof of residence documents
  2. Then I sign over CO title to her and create bill of sale- FedEx these to her.

First time home buyer in Fort Lauderdale (Broward County) here! 👋🏼We got the pest inspection covered by the seller. Wondering what else may be negotiable with seller or lender. The lender also keeps quoting us less on the phone so we’re very confused about the fees!

2024.05.02 00:30 AutoModerator General Questions Thread, May 01, 2024

A thread for new collectors to ask basic questions of the community.
Frequently Asked Questions below!
A longer version of the subreddit rules is here.
For questions specifically concerning bootlegs or vendor legitimacy, please ask in the Bootleg Megathread.
NSFW & Spoiler Guidelines
  • For Self Posts: include a bolded NSFW note next to links in that post.
  • For Links to sites/images: If the figure is NSFW, or the website has any NSFW content (including ads) be sure to tag your post NSFW and use the appropriate link flair.
Bootlegs
Any collection posts containing bootlegs, comments advocating buying bootlegs, or links to sites selling bootlegs, recasts, or unlicensed merchandise will be removed.
People often ask about the legitimacy and/or safety of a number of websites which sell large resin statues. The more commonly-asked of those deal primarily in resins from studios which do not have a license from the Japanese IP holders to produce merchandise. Therefore links to those sites are not permitted here. Another sign is if MyFigureCollection doesn't list the either the statue, its manufacturer, or the shop it's being sold on.
MyFigureCollection
My Figure Collection is like MyAnimeList... but for figures! Their database includes thousands of items which been produced during the last couple of decades, along with reviews of shops and other helpful articles. One can also list their own collection and post gallery photos.

Buying & Shipping

1. What’s the best place to buy my anime figures from?
That’s going to depend a lot on what works for you, but most people around here buy them from Amiami, Big in Japan, Hobby Search, HobbyLink Japan, or Tokyo Otaku Mode. If none of those work for you for whatever reason, there’s a list of reputable retailers in the sidebar that you can check out at any time. Be extra careful when ordering figures from websites like Amazon or ebay, as there are a lot of bootlegs on those sites. Don’t be afraid to ask in our Bootleg Megathread if you’re unsure.
2. What differences are there between the shipping options I get from most Japanese shops?
Below is a rundown of the main shipping choices you’ll get at most retailers. Keep in mind that if an order is large enough you will be forced to use one of the more expensive options, as SAL shipments have lower size and weight restrictions.
  • Unregistered SAL: Sometimes referred to as uSAL, is usually the cheapest method. It does not come with any tracking or insurance. Usually takes up 2-4 weeks for delivery.
  • Registered SAL: Sometimes referred to as rSAL, is insured for the declared value up to 6,000 yen. It comes with a tracking number and usually takes 2-4 weeks for delivery.
  • EMS: This method of shipping is much faster than either SAL options, usually arriving within a week of shipment. EMS shipments are insured for the declared value up to 2,000,000 yen.
  • Airmail
  • E-packet
  • Surface: Shops don't offer this very often. It's an actual cargo ship and slow as a result.
  • DHL: Becoming more available as an alternative to EMS on AmiAmi and other sites. Can be less expensive than EMS and of comparable speed, but may be more reliant on the specific geographical area being shipped to. The price is also determined by the size of the box. Offers their own tracking.
3. I placed two+ orders for figures at different times. Will my items be shipped together, or will I have to pay shipping twice?
Most shops will ask you to pay shipping on a per-order basis, but here are some that will allow combined shipping:
  • Amiami: You can combine orders here, as long as the orders ship in the same month. It doesn’t matter if the item is new or preowned. Any preorders that are set for that month can also be combined with other orders for that month. However, be aware that if the preorder gets delayed, Amiami will remove that item from that month’s shipment and place it on a new order. To combine orders on Amiami, use the “Combine Orders” feature under “My Account”.
  • Hobby Search: Hobby Search will let you combine orders that release in the same month, but you cannot combine in stock items with preorders. If you want to combine multiple preorders, or multiple in stock items, you can do so using the “Order Recombination” feature on your account page.
  • HobbyLink Japan: At HLJ, you have the option to send paid orders to their “Private Warehouse”, where you can store them for up to 2 months. When you’re ready to ship the items, you simply select which items to ship and HLJ will combine them into one shipment for you. To use this, just select the “Private Warehouse” option as shipping when you order.
If you’re unsure about whether or not a shop we haven’t listed will combine your orders, please refer to their individual FAQs.
4. When will I get charged for my preorder?
Most Japanese shops charge you once the item is in stock and ready for shipment. When that happens, they will send you an email asking for payment. Some shops (mostly overseas ones), will allow you to pay for the item up front though, if you’d like. A few with that option are:
  • Big in Japan (Japanese store)
  • Tokyo Otaku Mode
  • Anime Island
  • Crunchyroll
Keep in mind that overseas stores will likely get the figure a few months after Japanese ones, so pay attention to the release date stated on the website you are buying from so as to avoid that confusion.
5. Should I expect to pay customs fees when importing figures?
That depends on where you live. Here’s a quick rundown:
  • Australia: 10% GST is now assessed up front.
  • Canada: Minimum declared value for charges is around CAD$20 for regular shipments, and CAD$60 for gifts (gifting something only seems to lower the declared value by about CAD$40, not deplete it completely). When using Amiami, try their Small Air Packet option. It comes with tracking, gets there in about the same time as EMS, and is better at avoiding customs.
  • European Union: As of 1st July 2021, VAT has to be paid on all goods imported from outside of the EU. Retailers are supposed charge VAT for purchases under €150, however many Japanese retailers currently do not, so VAT will be charged when your order arrives in the EU. Orders that are >€150, VAT and duty will be charged by your local customs.
  • UK: As of 1st January 2021, VAT is to be charged by retailers for orders <£135. However, customs isn't currently charging VAT on parcels valued at <£135, even if the VAT hasn't been paid. Goods >£135 will have their VAT and duty calculated and charged by customs.
  • Mexico: Minimum declared value for customs fees is USD$300 for shipments by post, and USD$50 for shipments by courier.
  • United States: A shipment has to have a declared value of USD$2,000 before customs starts hitting you with fees, so you most likely won’t have to worry about them at all.
6. The figure I want is an exclusive, how do I go about ordering one outside of Japan?
You have three options for this:
A. Big in Japan is known to stock exclusive figures and ship to other countries. Usually the price is higher because they build in their proxy fees, but it’s easier than worrying about using a forwarder or proxy service. If you live in the US, Crunchyroll, Right Stuf, and Tokyo Otaku Mode also get exclusives sometimes, but out of the states the shipping can get expensive.
B. Forwarding Services: A forwarder is someone who you ship an exclusive item to so that they can forward the package on to you, usually for a flat fee + shipping. When using a forwarder you still make the purchase yourself, and enter their address into the shipping field. When the box arrives at the forwarder they will then stick your address onto the package and send it on its way.
Some popular forwarders are:
Be sure to read each sites instructions on forwarding carefully!
C. Proxy Services: With a proxy, you tell them what the item you’re looking for is and they will purchase it in your stead. This is handy for when a company doesn’t accept foreign credit cards, or you’re having trouble navigating a Japanese website.
Some popular proxies are:
Again, be sure you thoroughly read through each sites proxy instructions.
7. I see a bunch of really cheap figures that ship from China on ebay. Are those okay to buy?
Generally, no. They’re most likely bootlegs. If you want a second opinion on that, feel free to ask in the Bootleg Megathread that’s always stickied at the top of the sub.
8. What’s a bootleg, and how can I avoid buying them?
A bootleg is a counterfeit figure often made using rejected molds of the official product. They are usually priced significantly lower than the genuine article, and in order to make their profit, bootleggers use lower quality materials and have less attention to detail- resulting in a substandard figure.
The Bootleg Megathread that I mentioned in question 7 is a great tool to avoid buying any bootlegs. It has a few tips and tricks to avoiding them to begin with, and a few more on how to spot them if you’re worried you might already own one.
9. Does anyone know when figure X is going to be released? How do I know if it was delayed?
My Figure Collection (sometimes referred to as MFC) does an excellent job of staying on top of information like release dates and delays. If you’re curious about an upcoming figures release date, check there first. This information can be found directly under the “Releases” section on a figure’s entry. If you only see a month and a year in that section, it means the release date has not yet been announced by the manufacturer, and there is still a chance the figure could be delayed.
If you make an account on MFC you can also subscribe to comments, changes, and pictures via a checkbox on the right hand side of a figure’s listing. Subscribing to any of these things will allow MFC to send you an email anytime the subscription in question updates. Subscribing to “changes” is a great way to keep up with release dates and delays, among other things.
10. The figure I want is long sold out at normal retailers! What’s the best place to pick it up in the aftermarket?
A list of reputable retailers can be found under the “Shops” section of the /AnimeFigures sidebar. They all sell legitimate products, and many of them also sell figures second hand. However, the most frequently suggested second hand sites are Mandarake and Amiami- who has a preowned section that they update every night save Sundays and Japanese holidays around 1PM JST and again around 6PM JST.
AmiAmi grades their pre-owned items on a letter scale. The general consensus from buyers is that their ratings are conservative, so unless the item and/or packaging is specifically indicated as having significant flaws, pre-owned items from them are usually in at least as good a condition as their rating suggests.
Note: When you search Mandarake, you’ll get the best results by using the Japanese characters for whatever you are searching. If you don’t know them, you can find them on MFC by clicking on any of the “details” in that figure’s listing.
11. Amiami has a figure I’m interested in labeled as “For sale in Japan only”. Does this mean I can’t order it without a proxy or forwarder?
No, you can still order it. Amiami’s English site has that warning on many items, and it’s mostly meant to inform you that this product was made for a Japanese market, and as such, will have Japanese speaking/writing in it- so don’t expect any instructions to be in English. If Amiami doesn’t want foreigners buying a certain product, they won’t even list it on their English site.

Displaying Your Figures

12. What display cases do you recommend?
If you live near an Ikea try out one of these:
  • Klingsbo
  • Billy (Often used with Morliden doors (now the HÖGBO and glass shelves.)
  • Detolf: Formerly the go-to choice for inexpensive display cabinetry, the Detolf was first made flimsier around 2020 and then essentially phased out of the name, to become the BLÅLIDEN. Knockoff versions of widely-varying quality are commonly found on other shopping sites these days, though.
*If you decided on a Detolf, you might find that there is a lot of wasted space. Here are a few tutorials on raising the shelves or and adding extra ones in.
If you don’t live near an Ikea, Amazon has a few display options, though they are more expensive. Also keep an eye on your local Craigslist (or your country’s equivalent) and stores near you that are closing up.
13. What lighting do you guys recommend?
Ikea’s Dioder LED strips were discontinued after a long run. A current version is the Vattensten, if you're inclined to buy your case and lights at the same time.
LED strips have become very commonly available in recent years; most hardware and home furnishing stores carry a selection now. Just make sure that the lights don’t get too hot!
14. What are those clear plastic boxes that I see under everyone’s figures in their collection posts, and where can I get them?
Those are called risers. Most of us use standard acrylic risers like these. Some other, easy to find things that have been suggested are:
Check your local hobby store for the first 2 options, or your local hardware store if you want to make your own.
Another common suggestion is to visit The Container Store if you have one near you. They have a lot of things to choose from that can suit a variety of needs. Be sure to check out their standard acrylic risers, their Amac boxes, and the various display cases they sell (baseball cases, mini car cases. hockey puck cases, etc).
15. Should I keep my figures sealed?
That is, of course, up to you really, but here are a few things to keep in mind when debating this question:
  • Keeping it sealed can actually damage your figure. PVC figures usually have something called plasticizer in them, and that plasticizer needs to be able to breath. If a PVC figure isn’t exposed to oxygen, after a period of time the plasticizer starts to break down and form a sticky substance on the surface of the figure. Simply opening your figures and taking them out of the box prevents this from happening. If you happen to find plasticizer goo on one of your figures, Kahotan has a handy guide for dealing with it.
  • Unlike some other figure markets, keeping an anime figure sealed won’t raise its value by a whole lot. In fact, because of the plasticizer problem mentioned above, your figure could actually be in better condition if you open it versus keeping it sealed.

Finding the Right Figure(s) for You

16. What are "scales" and "prizes"? What is the difference between them?
Those are classifications for figures based on a few factors.
  • "Prizes" are generally more simply produced figures which are intended to be given as prizes for playing arcade games. They are inexpensive and lack the detail of scale figures, though some prize figure lines have standouts which may approach lower-end scales in quality. That is uncommon and often depends on the individual figure.
  • "Scales" are called such because they are nominally designed to be proportional to the dimensions of the character which they are based on. They are generally of much better manufacture and materials than prize figures, allowing for more detail in painting, accessories, or complex poses.
  • "Trading" figures appear in gashapon machines or as blind boxes on shop counters, often as sets which include multiple characters. As suggested by the class name, the randomness encourages trading. They are usually very inexpensively-produced, though as with prizes, some series are better than others.
  • "Non-scale" encompasses a variety of other categories. It is often used to describe poseable figure lines such as figma and Nendoroids.
In recent years producers such as Good Smile Company attempted to further bridge the gap between prize quality and scales by introducing figure lines which are intended to be moderately-priced while retaining a higher level of detail than the typical prize figure, to varying levels of success.
17. There are so many figure companies! Who makes good figures?!
Obviously this is a very subjective question, but as a general starting point, here are a few well renowned figure companies:
  • Alter
  • Max Factory
  • Good Smile Company
  • Kotobukiya (usually hit or miss for people. Use your best judgement based off of the prototype)
  • Flare
  • Stronger
18. I really love “series X / character X”- how can I check if any figures were ever made for it?
My Figure Collection can be your best friend here. Simply do a search on the name of the series or character using the search bar located at the top right of the screen, and all associated figures pop up!
Alternatively, if you’re looking at a figure’s MFC entry, most of the text under the “Details” section can be clicked on and used to run a search.
19. How can I commission a custom figure?
None of the major figure companies (Alter, Kotobukiya, Good Smile Company, etc.) will take a commission for a single figure. This thread has a few websites in it that you can check out, or you can look into garage kits. Some kit painters would be willing to resculpt, frankenstein together, or otherwise modify kits for the right price.
If you're looking for help completing a garage kit, /brushforhire may be useful.

Keeping Up with New Announcements

20. How can I keep up with figure news (announcements, updates, etc.)?
Most people use a MFC combined with any or all of the following news sites:
Many figure companies are active on Twitter, so following them there is recommended for quicker news.
To use MFC for this I’ll quote question #9.
Most companies have one or more Twitter accounts. Some examples: Good Smile Company sales, Good Smile's USA branch, Max Factory, AmiAmi Hobby News.
21. Everyone’s excited about something called Wonfes….. what the heck is that?!
WonFes (short for Wonder Festival) is a biannual figure expo where many figure producers (both large and small) show off new sculpts and updates to figures already under way. Most companies save their most exciting announcements for WonFes, so we all look forward to the expo whenever it rolls around! Winter Wonder Festival is usually held in February, while Summer Wonder Festival is usually in July. The event has also spread to Shanghai, in the late spring.
22. One or two (or 15) figures were announced at WonFes that I’m really excited about! How can I keep track of their progress once the event is over?
MFC is always really quick about getting new WonFes announcements (or any others throughout the year, for that matter) listed in their database, so we suggest using that. To find a figure from the event you can search any number of things, including the name of the character or the name of the show. You can also use the tag search to search “WonderFestival 20xx_[season]” to see all items announced at that event.
