2024.06.02 06:16 420imgay69 Taxes+duties Canada

Is it worth paying for the ‘taxes and duties paid’ shipping for Canada? TBH i don’t know 100% what it means but if I choose not do go forward with it id be saving 20 bucks. Is there some specific protection that comes with paying taxes/duties? Or should i just go ahead and opt for unpaid duties.
Also I haven’t bought from DK in many months and last time I bought something this extra fee wasn’t even an option lmao i wonder what’s different

2024.06.02 06:11 ClaimComprehensive35 Zoning 17 Quick Review

Feel free to disagree and share your thoughts and opinions sa comment section.
Game!
Caspher vs Andros - 5-0
Malinaw na Caspher to kahit walang stumble si Andros. Kailangan lang i-work on ni Caspher yung delivery at boses niya.
Pero yun, same old hespero. Hespero r1,2 frinze r3 kung tama pagkakaala ko.
Negho vs Antonym - 5-0
Lakas din niya at consistent all 3, Negho Gy.
Katana vs Meraj - 5-0
Katana sobrang lakas mag-story telling, angles, wordplay, at parang stand up comedian.
At naging effective pa nga vs Yuniko. Parang improved and legit woke AKT si icerocks dito. Zoom out.
Slock vs Ruff - 7-0
Personal Judging:
r1 - Ruff dikit r2 - Ruff malinaw r3 - Slock malinaw
Parang one of the best performance din nga niya sa’kin to.
At nagawa pa ‘to ni Slock smoothly. Dagdag pa na siya huling bumanat. BOTN.
Vit vs G-clown - 7-0
Mid tier na delivery, wordplays and agression.
Lhip vs Sirdeo - 5-0
Main event pero pinakamahinang battle ng gabi. Nag maoy si Deo at wala ako naintindihan at all.
Overall, sakto lang yung event for its price. Napalitan lang din yung hype bigla after nilabas yung unibersikulo line up.

2024.06.02 05:54 Ok-Emotion-6379 Hi, I'm 23 years old, and don't know how to face having to work for life. Maybe there's something out there that'll make it feel okay? I just want to stop saying no to everything...

Gonna be a long read, thanks for going through it.
I'm in Canada. I attended Uni for 1 year studying IT but dropped out, I did not like a single moment about it. It killed my passive mild interest in coding. I wanted to study social work but threw that idea away after feeling completely apathetic after helping homeless people in the city. During my NEET years, I fell in love with a game. Eventually, I got a full-time day job working on a computer, and at night I taught many other players how to get better at that game for free, and some were willing to pay a couple bucks. I tried to advertise myself through YouTube, but it didn't take off fast enough and I had to call it quits from stress of overworking myself after 6 months. I wasn't given the opportunity to work part time to be able to focus more on being able to make it work.
I absolutely loved every second of it. Filling in my free time with coaching sessions, building and maintaining new relationships with players, constantly brainstorming new lesson ideas for videos, working on scripts, recording and editing videos, designing the thumbnail. Every single video I released I cherish with all my heart and am very proud of myself for what I have made, and I love coaching players so much I continue to do it to this day for free, though much more sparingly than I used to.
That was a year ago. Nowadays, I pay $500 in rent to live in my parents home and just go full degenrotting whenever I am not at work. When I am at work, I miserably and quietly suffocate, begging internally to be saved by the grace of spontaneous death or a time skip to the weekend, even though its only just an hour into Monday. It is not an exaggeration when I say it feels like suffering to be at work. This is not a case of the 'I hate Mondays'. I've already used up all my sick days and vacation hours to avoid work as of last week, so that leaves me with 6 months of no paid time off remaining to use. It's only Saturday night as I type this, and I am already dreading and stressed out about how I have to go back to work soon.
The job itself is like gold compared to any other minimum wage job around I've seen for no degree. Insurance benefit, well air conditioned, I sit by a window with a view of trees and grass, work hours are 7-2:30 M-F with 30 min paid lunches, the work is easy too as it is just basic data entry, and travel takes only 5-10 mins by car. My supervisors and manager are extremely passive as well and basically completely leave me alone, not even so much as a progress evaluation or anything of the sort. Because of this, I spend at least 60% of my work time (if not more) just browsing reddit on my phone and take bathroom breaks constantly, occasionally I will get high in the middle of the work day too. I am the worst employee, no doubt about it, but I truly can't bring myself to care because I find it gratifying to think that I will be fired. I do not talk with any coworkers and have no friends both inside and outside of work.
Typing out that last paragraph and reading it back, a part of me genuinely thought, Wait, that sounds like a dream job. Yet, despite being in it... I hate it, and it sucks that I do :( At work, I often fantasize about escaping in unhinged ways, like jumping from the second floor, calling in a bomb threat, injuring myself to be admitted to a hospital, and other such ilk. I often question what's wrong with me, and wish I just could be okay with where I am in life, but I deeply feel like my life sucks. I have ADHD, I am taking meds for depression, and also seeing a therapist.
I also like to cook, but love learning new dish recipes even more. I would hate cooking if I worked in a restaurant, and I don't have the chutzpah to become a personal chef.
I appreciate you for reading this far. If I could be allowed an additional luxury, please, if you have any suggestions to help me, please make it as detailed as possible; include the exact steps or relevant resources that would take to achieve your suggestion, as well as a description of what the path you suggest looks/feels like. I need to know not only *what*, but also the *how* and *why*. I understand if not every one is willing to do this, I appreciate you all the same for even just responding.
Thankyou

2024.06.02 05:43 slootplayground Two Individuals and Money-Transfer Company Indicted

Silver International Investment and two individuals face charges of laundering dirty money through British Columbia (B.C.) casinos, and more precisely through River Rock Casino in Richmond. After a year-old casino report flagged money-laundering concerns, the newly-elected British Columbia government has hired an independent investigator to check the case. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), organized criminals used Silver International Investment as an illicit banking network to loan suspected drug cash to high-rollers from Macau. In that way, the criminals could skirt China’s strict anti-money laundering system and wash their dirty cash through B.C. casinos.

RCMP allege that they revealed a sophisticated money-laundering scheme, which was used to launder drug cash through B.C. casinos. RCMP’s Project E-Pirate probe reportedly found out that more than $500 million dirty money was laundered through Richmond’s River Rock Casino. The amount was split into portions of $1.5 million per day, paid mostly with $20 bills. As it can be recalled, some time ago the police have warned that $20 bills are among the most used bills by drug dealers. But the River Rock staff was prone to accept the unsourced cash and the gamblers were able to cash out with bills of $100, which are considered suitable for banking.

Caught Red-Handed
Various documents and reports, obtained by Postmedia through freedom of information requests, revealed that the criminals were using Silver International Investment as an illegal banking network to transfer money to send money to and fro. According to the RCMP’s report, criminals were lending drug cash to VIP gamblers from China through Silver International Investment. The VIP gamblers could pay back their loans in China through the illicit banking channel.

In that way, the criminals could avoid China’s capital control for exporting and importing funds, as well as to circumvent the attention of Canada’s financial watchdog. Here it is interesting to note that in a police special operation in 2015, more than $2 million in mostly $20 bills and account books were confiscated from Silver International’s office in Richmond. RCMP Insp. Bruce Ward announced that the information in Silver International’s account books point out that the company washed more than $220 million in cash through B.C. casinos in a year.

Caixuan Qin and Jian Jun Zhu will also face multiple fraud charges after police allege that Qin is the director of Silver International, which address is registered in an apartment in Richmond. The report alleges that Qin is not the owner of the apartment, but he owns a property in south Vancouver, estimated to worth $2.5 million. The two individuals together with Silver International Investment are charged with crimes including money laundering of drug cash, possession of a property, involved in a crime and others.

2024.06.02 05:15 Aftercot The Canada Problem

So I have seen a lot of the student protests and influx of Indian and South Asian students in Canada. And while illegal immigration via Mexico and sea should have been stopped years back, for many of the students as I see it, they have had their money stolen by the Canadian government. A significant portion of Canada's GDP comes from the tuition these Indian punjabis are paying, and that's not including the thousands of cad worth in food and living costs. With white homeless people on the streets, it seems these students are feeding you instead of the opposite that you claim. So while I see a lot of hatred for these Indians coming in and taking jobs, I think you don't REALLY care. Because if you did, you wouldn't continue stealing money from them and then getting trapped into giving them jobs. In fact, if you refund the money they spent, I'm sure most of these students will come back to India.

2024.06.02 05:00 Ordinary-Ad3439 Rethinking my options for my program.

Reposting on multiple subreddits: I have 2 days for a full refund!!
So, I applied to the law program in Laurier with the dual degree in history knowing full well of the consequences about going to Sussex for it.
To basically make a long story short, and for someone to clarify, the problem with this program is that it’s harder to get a job with firms when coming back to Canada right?
Well, after accepting and paying for the residence fee etc even though I knew about it and spoke to some people I finally decided to truly read up on it. I may be regretting my acceptance.
For some background information: I want to go into business law and working with contracts, not necessarily anything in the courtroom. And I may possibly stay permanently in the UK if I enjoy it during my school. I also am really interested in history/psychology but I was pushed more into this law program by family. Should I drop out now while I have the chance? And if I did what would the career positions be for me in psychology versus business law at any other Canadian school.

2024.06.02 04:21 chris4092 watch out for mlm scams like world financial group

WFG in Canada and America is an MLM that trains others to scam people on insurance and investments. The leaders include Carl Meldrum, Bert Bruneau, Kevin Yuen, Steve Holbrook, Gregg Strynadka, Real Michaud, Raja Dhaliwal, Cameron Michaud, Corey Michaud, Kevin Joly, Derrick Germain, Camron Dunbar, Marlise Kelsy, and Brian Kalyn. They sell overpriced, underperforming investments, universal life (UL), and whole life insurance, avoiding term insurance with ETF portfolios because whole life and UL pay them 10 times the commission. Here’s a detailed comparison to understand their misleading practices:Term Insurance vs. Segregated Funds:Term Insurance: A $100,000 policy for a 30-year-old female costs $100/year.Segregated Funds: Putting $50,000 into a segregated fund costs $250-$500/year for insurance on the principal, plus investment fees.ETF MER: 0.20% on $50,000 = $100/year.Segregated Fund MER: 1.50% on $50,000 = $750/year.Cost Comparison:Insurance Cost: Term insurance costs $100/year for $100,000 coverage, while segregated funds cost $250-$500/year for $50,000 coverage, making it 2.5 to 5 times more expensive for half the coverage.Investment Cost: ETFs charge $100/year (0.20% MER), whereas segregated funds charge $750/year (1.50% MER), making segregated funds 7.5 times more expensive.Buy Term and Invest the Difference (BTID) vs. Universal Life (UL):BTID Strategy:Term Insurance: $100/year for $100,000 coverage.ETF Investment: Remaining funds invested in a low-cost ETF within a TFSA, growing tax-free.UL Insurance:High Fees: High management fees and borrowing costs (over 10% interest to borrow against UL).Poor Performance: UL investments rarely exceed 5% returns over 25 years, with high fees eating up the gains.Performance:BTID: Provides significantly higher after-tax returns due to lower fees and better investment performance.UL: High fees and borrowing costs diminish returns, making it a less attractive option.WFG’s Deceptive Practices:WFG avoids side-by-side comparisons of BTID and UL because BTID clearly outperforms UL, leaving clients with more after-tax dollars. The high commissions from selling UL and whole life insurance motivate WFG to push these products despite their poor value for clients.WFG's Investments vs. ETFs:WFG does not offer any investments that outperform their ETF counterparts because WFG investments rip clients off with high MERs. WFG will do apples-to-oranges comparisons but never apples-to-apples comparisons. Ask any WFG agent to compare a 60% equity and 40% bond ETF like XBAL with any portfolio they offer that is 60/40, or any investment they offer that is 80/20 with an 80/20 ETF like XGRO.If WFG is not lying by offering apples-to-oranges comparisons, they will lie and claim that money managers managing mutual funds and segregated funds can outperform in volatility and down markets. This is false; studies show that 90% of mutual funds and segregated funds fail to outperform ETFs in an apples-to-apples comparison during down markets. As Warren Buffett famously said, it's impossible to time the market, and claiming to provide lower volatility and downturn protection in a down market is a straight lie.In summary, term insurance combined with ETF investments in a TFSA outperforms UL by providing higher returns and lower costs. WFG’s practices are misleading, prioritizing their profits over clients' best interests

2024.06.02 03:49 Exyide Has anyone ever heard of zestazy.com

Hi everyone I am looking for a place to live in Vancouver, BC as I'm moving there on a work visa. I found a place that looks good and is in my price range. While I'm not there in person yet I did do a video chat with the property manager who I spoke with on a video chat and did a virtual walkthrough tour and the photos listed matched the video. She said that if I wanted to a friend could come by to see the place for themselves I could (this was yesterday).
She sent me the application and I'm currently filling it out and have financial documents with sensative info redacted ready to go. I have not been asked to send any money or pay for anything at the moment. So far everything seems legit but the two red flags that I have come across are the website and a small part of the email that I received.
For the website there is a home page but other parts of the site appear to not work and some buttons don't work. Some parts have Insert your text here and the site kinda is broken. In the email it says "I will send you an email regarding access codes to the house and other important information a few days prior to move-in once the contract is signed and the deposits are received." I have always signed a contract and recieved the keys to an apartment in person the day of move in. Maybe things are done differently in Canada but that seems odd to me.
Am I overthinking this or no? I have also never heard of zestazy and there doesn't seem to be a lot about it online. I'm always suspicious of potential scams and always try to do my research.

2024.06.02 03:38 vbigoof Need advice whether to take a job offer or not?

Hi everyone, I (30s M) have been unemployed for 1 year now because of a slowdown in my industry. I am considered a "senioexperienced" in my industry, so if it picks back up again, I should have no trouble getting a job. However, it would be competitive considering the current number of unemployed people.
However, I don't know when my industry will pick back up. If I had to estimate, it could be between 6 months to 1 year. I live in Canada and I had no luck with getting callbacks locally, but I recently received a job offer in Australia and they want me to relocate there 1 year for the entire contract (remote work is not possible).
The pay they gave me after negotiations is not as good as my previous job and there are no benefits. I have enough savings to live comfortable for 2 years, but of course I would like to start saving, not using my savings.
My long-time rent is considerably cheaper than what it would be if I had to rent today. I will lose this rent price if I leave.
My gf can't go with me because she's not able to afford to lose her in-office job.
I'm conflicted and stressed about the decision deadline that's coming up in a few days.
What would you suggest I do or think about?

Thought US citizens did not have to pay to visit Canada for tourism? Here for a week with my family saw this charge on my credit card statement same day I went through customs.
Customs was easy / quick automated machine. Any idea what this charge is?

2024.06.02 03:01 DonFiglioni Explanations

Shared false memories are often perpetuated when one person's false memory, misquote, joke or inaccurate reference makes it into pop culture where it is seen by millions.
SHATNER, SALLY FIELD & HANNIBAL Jim Carrey in Ace Ventura calling a monacled man the Monopoly guy, or doing Shatner from The Twilight Zone, "There's... someone on the wing! Some... THING!" or imitating Sally Field in The Mask and Hannibal Lecter in The Cable Guy: these were comedic impressions, not quotes.
TANK MAN & THE LINDBERGH BABY I was recently watching episodes of The West Wing which perpetuated 2 more common MEs. Richard Schiff's character mentions people watching TV and seeing a man get run over by a tank - a reference to Tiananmen square. A woman sarcastically confesses to a crime, adding that if you search her house, you'll find the Lindbergh baby. People watching could easily remember these events incorrectly.
GHOST POTTERY Patrick Swayze was still alive during the pottery scene. Family Guy spoofed this scene with Swayze's character as a ghost, and you have probably seen similar spoofs, leading to the false memory that he was a ghost in that scene. YOU WANT SOME CORNBREAD, MR. JINGLES? Michael Clarke Duncan's character rarely interacted with Mr. Jingles and never fed him cornbread. That was a different inmate. The Simpsons spoofed this, with MCD saying "You want some cornbread, Mr. Jingles?" which is how many people remember the movie. SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR'S DRAMATIC MONOLOGUE In I Know What You Did Last Summer, SMG witnesses a murder while performing on stage, to a stunned audience who remain silent. Some people remember the audience erupting in applause. That was a parody scene in Scary Movie.
You may have seen a different version of a popular movie as a child.
PHILOSOPHER'S STONE There are 2 versions of the first Harry Potter movie. The title macguffin is called the Sorcerer's Stone in American releases, the Philosopher's Stone in UK and Canada.
AUSTRALIAN PETER PAN If you remember Peter Pan having a British accent, Tinkerbell saving him from a poisoned cake, and Smee going home to his mother at the end, the you saw an Australian version not made by Disney. This one MESSED with my head after watching the Disney version as an adult.
CALIGULA There are MANY different edits of this film based on it's country and time of release and censorship laws. Some versions include hard-core pornographic scenes which were cut in other versions. Some versions have the order of scenes mixed up. You could watch 2 versions edited so differently that the plot is not even the same. I have seen 2: one that starts with Caligula in bed with his sister, the other that starts with a hunting scene intended to come later.
BRIAN COX AS HANNIBAL LECTER? You may have seen either or both Manhunter and Red Dragon - 2 adaptations of the same novel. Manhunter came out before Silence of the Lambs and featured Brian Cox. Red Dragon was made later as a prequel featuring Anthony Hopkins. There could be many instances of people confusing originals and remakes.
If you tend to watch DVD special features, you may remember deleted or alternate scenes more vividly than the actual movie.
DON'T DROP THAT NECKLACE, ROSE! Yes, there was an alternate ending of Titanic in which Bill Paxton confronted Old Rose on the back of the ship, but it completely messed with the flow and the audience's catharsis. Bravo to James Cameron for chosing the better ending. One of my Favorite movies.
IT'S THE DIRTIEST JOKES THAT STAY WITH YOU Years after watching Team America: World Police on DVD, the only 2 scenes I remembered were a disgustingly graphic scat sex scene between two marionettes, and a scene of man-on-man oral sex that ended with the superior saying it would be hard to make his subordinate into the perfect soldier... because he's gay now. I was dismayed when I watched it a second time and both these scenes were absent. Turns out, years ago, I watched the deleted scenes in the DVD special features.
Historical films VS reenactments
HOUSTON, WE'VE HAD A PROBLEM This is the line as it was actually spoken in real life and, subsequently, in several dramatic reenactments. In the popular movie, Tom Hanks says "Houston, we HAVE a problem."
THAT'S NOT HOW THEY KILLED BIN LADEN! Shortly after it happened, you may have watched one of several dramatic reenactments of the raid, including an animated recreation of the actual helmet cam footage, which differed drastically from how it was portrayed in Zero Dark Thirty. Aside from the production quality, the reenactments were far more enthralling.
FALSE TRAILERS Yes, sometimes a movie trailer is made using whatever footage is available, before the final cut of the film is finished. Therefore, it is not uncommon for scenes from the trailer to be missing from the movie.
WATCH OUT FOR THAT TIE FIGHTER! That's right, Jyn never comes face-to-face with a TIE fighter in Rogue One, despite it being one of the most exciting shots from the trailer.
LIVE. DIE. REPEAT. Not the title of the movie. It was called Edge of Tomorrow, though you wouldn't know it from the constant repetition of the tag line in the trailer and minimal use of the actual title. Most DVD/Blu-ray releases have this tag line prominently on the cover art, so viewers know what movie it is.
SOUNDS LIKE A SEXY HAMBURGER! Seth Rogen never says this in Superbad, in reference to the fake name McLovin, but it is one of the most memorable lines from the time of the film's release.
False memories sometimes form from combining several related ones.
TINKERBELL DOTS THE I No, she doesn't. But you've seen her flitting across the screen and flicking a wand to make words appear or the castle disappear in several different title sequences. See the Disney home video one, for example.
I SEE WHITE PEOPLE! No, the line spoofing The Sixth Sense was not spoken in Scary Movie, but you DID hear it the same year. At the 2000 Oscars, host Billy Crystal did a bit where he had the camera zoom up on celebrities in the audience and he said what they were thinking in that moment. He spoke this line when the camera was zoomed in on Michael Clarke Duncan, to much laughter.
SINBAD THE... SUPERVILLAIN? Sinbad did not play a genie called Shazaam, but in 1996, the same year Shaq played Kazaam, Sinbad played a mischievous character in a ridiculous costume as the main antagonist in the Christmas film Jingle All the Way. You may have combined these 2 images in your memory.
THAT DARN CORNUCOPIA No, it wasn't part of the Fruit of the Loom logo, but it was a frequently reproduced image every kid saw in school when they learned about Thanksgiving. The 2 images were so similar that many teachers made the assumption they were the same, telling kids they may have seen it on their underwear. In fact, the cornucopia image was so common, it seems to have even been used on some knock-off brands of socks and underwear, making this MA totally understandable.
MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL... The evil queen never said it when you were a kid, but Lord Farquad did in Shrek when you were a bit older, which probably misinformed your memory of the original line.
IT'S THE EYE OF THE TIGER... Does the song make you think of the movie Rocky? It shouldn't. It was never used in the original film, only the sequels. Although Rocky's original theme music is just as iconic.
OH, NO! NOT PLASTIC SHEETS! There were none on the floor for Tommy's hit in Goodfellas, but you may be thinking of a similar scene in Lethal Weapon 2.
IS LIBERTY ISLAND A THING? Yes, it always was. You always associated it with the immigrants who came over through Ellis Island when you learned about them in school. Your teachers may not have bothered telling you the name of the island that houses the statue and you assumed it was the same. And here's something else to think about: Liberty Island is located in the waters of New Jersey, not New York.
THAT'S THE WRONG ACTOR! Meg Ryan was not Maverick's love iterest in Top Gun; she was Goose's wife. Some people made that mistake as Ryan soon became a household name and was mentioned in a lot of the film's marketing, especially for the home video release. Ben Affleck was not in Saving Private Ryan, but you have seen him collaborate with Matt Damon many times, and there was an actor named Edward Burns who bares a bit of a resemblance to him. I hope not many of you have made this mistake, but some people remember Angelina Jolie in the original Mission Impossible. It was an actress named Emanuelle Beart... thank God, since she was playing the wife of Jon Voight - Jolie's father. And of course, anyone who watched The X-Files as a kid might remember some episodes with David Duchovney as Agent Mulder, when it was really his replacement, Robert Patrick as Agent Doggett.
Sometimes, a movie or show doesn't go the way you were expecting, or you think "wouldn't this have been better" and your mind dwells on your own version more than on how it actually happened, then, years later, you only remember your version. In some cases, so many people were thinking the same thing, that when you mention your ending later, others say "Oh, yeah! That was great!"
DOLLY'S BRACES She never had any. But she did have pigtails which, like braces, are often associated with youth and feminine cuteness. Add to that the fact that Jaws had metal teeth and you were rooting for them to get together, and it would have given them some great common ground. So when she gave that slow, shy smile at the end, you saw what you wanted to see.
THEY WERE DEAD THE WHOLE TIME! That's not how Lost ended. Whine all you want, or just go and watch it again and pay attention. It was such a popular theory that people were simply expecting it. The popularity of the theory inspired the producers to give us a glimpse into the afterlife in the last season, but by the end, it was made very clear that everything that happened on the island really happened. Christian might as well have been looking directly into the camera when he spelled it out for his son. But many of you couldn't accept that your theory was wrong. If you watched the Jimmy Kimmel Live special that immediately followed the finale, you saw that even Jimmy subscribed to this theory and refused to let it go. It was a classy move for the cast to refrain from berating him about it on his own show.
AVE SOL INVICTUS! The Sun is classified as a yellow dwarf star, which is why it has always been drawn yellow. Since you were a kid, you drew the Sun with a yellow crayon. When you were older, you learned that sunlight is white light, which is composed of every color in the spectrum. White light surrounds us all the time, but we don't see it. We only see the colors that are reflected off surfaces based on their material composition. The Sun EMITS white light, but it APPEARS yellow, or orange-yellow.
That's all I've got for now. I hope I've given you lots to think about and would love to hear your responses!

2024.06.02 02:35 Explorian86 Would you have been happy with 500w/20mph?

The Haul in Canada is 500w and limited to 32kmh / 20mph. I’m trying to decide if that matters for every-day use. Do you think you would still be happy with the haul if it was 200w less powerful and the limit was reduced by 8mph overnight - or would you still enjoy it? You would also get about $120 back in your pocket (if you paid full msrp that is).
I ask because I could pop across the border and pick up the American version. I’d pay a bit more with duties, but would also potentially be SOL if I had any issues like error codes etc. I guess I’m trying to decide if the loss of 200w and 8mph should be worth being butthurt about.

2024.06.02 01:38 mistypee Simulated Retirement (Paper Trading)

I’ve had several requests to turn this into a separate post rather than burying it in the Daily. So here it is! 🙂
Monthly updates will be added as new comments, so I don’t hit the character limit. They’ll be linked in the table below.
Monthly Updates
Month Expenses Portfolio (from Day 0)
April 2024 $27,530 -1.32%
May 2024 $3,030 +1.87%
What is this?
I’m running a year-long simulated retirement in the lead up to my actual retirement.
Start: 1 April 2024 End: 31 March 2025
At the time I started this experiment, my retirement portfolio was sitting at about 70% of my ideal ChubbyRE target. It’s looking like I'm probably going to be pulling the RE trigger a couple of years sooner than anticipated. So, I decided to run a simulation while I’m still working to see what RE might look like with my current net worth.
Like many of us, I’ll have multiple income sources in retirement. Prior to my various pensions kicking in at 60-70, I’ll be living off four of those sources, which I'm using for this sim:
Stats
40s, Single, No Kids, MCOL in Canada.
Methodology
This simulation is rough and dirty. I’m only paper trading one of my accounts (RRSP) to keep things manageable. I’ll be paper-selling equities and tracking what my portfolio value would look like against real market returns.
The other account withdrawals are being treated as cash debits [in the form of tax-free dividends (TFSA), rental income, and cash assets (GICs, LOCs, savings)]. Based on some projections I’ve done, the best tax strategy for my situation currently looks like ~30% from taxable income sources, ~50% as cap gains/dividends, and ~20% tax-free. I'm using this allocation to determine how much I'm withdrawing from each account for this simulation.
Why did I choose to run this on my RRSP? It’s a locked-in account that I’ve already maxed out for the year, and it’s currently 100% equities paying about a 2% quarterly dividend. That makes it the easiest to track. It’s also the first account I’ll be drawing from in real retirement due to tax implications. So, I figured it was as good a place to start as any!
I'm not adjusting my spending in any way during this year or trying to meet any sort of withdrawal target. I'm going about life as usual and “selling” whatever is needed to cover my expenses.
The goal is to see if my current savings can cover my normal life expenses, or if I need to suck it up for a couple more years at work.
