Round 1, Pick 5 - Devon Witherspoon
In the leadup to the 2023 Draft, most Seahawks fans were pounding the table for Will Anderson, Jalen Carter, or a QB. But the dark horse name being reported by the Seahawks beat was Devon Witherspoon. As it turns out, the dark horse was the right horse.
When you draft a CB in the Top 5, you hope that they are an immediate game changer. Spoon, thankfully, was that game changer. Whether it was his masterful coverage or his surprisingly terrifying pass rush, dude was one of only a few true difference makers on a very shaky defensive unit.
When your corner is consistently suplexing guys, that’s when you know the guy’s special. The only knock on his rookie year was that he wasn’t fully healthy, and that likely cost him a DROY. Even still, he’s an EASY A+ Grade
Round 1, Pick 20 - JSN
Smith-Njigba had what I like to call a deceptively good rookie season. You look at his 600 receiving yards and 4 TDs and your first thought is “That’s it? That doesn’t look like the production of a 1st Round receiver.” However with a closer glance, you can already see the impact that he’s made.
Seattle, under Pete Carroll, was never a “spread it up and shred it up” pass offense. He’s always tried to do a balanced, run first offense. As such, The WR3 never feasts. JSN’s 628 Rec. Yards was actually the 2nd most for a WR3 in the Carroll era (behind Lockett’s rookie season [664]).
Even with a weaker passing season, JSN always had some role in the offense with at least 20 yards in 11 straight games from Week 5 to 15 and he consistently found himself in the right place at the right time, with go-ahead TDs in Cleveland and Philly.
I fully expect JSN to turn the corner in Year 2. But for now, his grade is B-
Round 2, Pick 37 - Derrick Hall*
Seeing his story of perseverance and strength was one of the coolest things to see during the draft. I was stoked to see him join the Seahawks. However on the field, it was far less of a storybook situation. Underwhelming is the word to use. Hall appeared in only 25% of Seattle’s defensive snaps (getting far more love on Special Teams with 62%) and only mustered five pressures and five QB hits during the season. It seems that Hall is taking the Boye Mafe route of acclimating to the Pros during his rookie season. Not a great year 1, but not the end of the world either. Gets a bump for ST role. Grade: C+
Round 2, Pick 52 - Zach Charbonnet
Classic Pete Move, but one that makes sense. Seattle’s RB health has been an eternal mystery and Charbonnet gives Seattle a decent backup for whenever K9 goes down. While Charbonnet showed promise in his Rookie season, he never turned into the thunder to K9’s lighting like expected. That’s the area to improve for 2024. Grade: C+
Round 4, Pick 108 - Anthony Bradford
Bradford pretty quickly became Seattle’s starting Right Guard and like with most mid-round rookies, felt the growing pains. A PFF grade in the 50s is definitely rough. If he can improve for Year 2, not a bad value. But for now, Grade: C
Round 4, Pick 123 - Cam Young
Sensing a theme here, Seattle’s past few selections have not been outright misses, but instead are players who simply aren’t there…yet. Great for the long term future of a team, but it’s less favorable to look back just one year later. Young was involved in 16 games, but only had about 20% of the snaps, both defensively and on ST. Curious to see where Year 2 takes him - Grade: C
Round 5, Pick 151 - Mike Morris
Can’t in good conscience give this pick a grade yet, as he missed all but one game with a shoulder injury. - Grade: Incomplete
Round 5, Pick 154 - Olusegun Oluwatimi
After signing Evan Brown in FA, Olu Oluwatimi became Seattle’s backup center. He had one start, against the Cardinals and he looked promising. Love the long term outlook for the pick. - Grade: B-
Round 6, Pick 198 - Jerrick Reed II
Reed was looking pretty dang promising, showing up primarily on special teams. However, his season ended prematurely with a Torn ACL in Wk. 11. If he can recover to full health, I expect to see him step up into an even bigger role in Year 2. Great return for a 6th Round guy - Grade: B-
Round 7, Pick 237 - Kenny McIntosh
Plenty of Seahawks fans were excited to see McIntosh fall all the way to the 7th round and were curious to see how he would be used in the offense. However this Apple simply wasn’t ripe by the time the season started. McIntosh dealt with injuries throughout the offseason and the Seahawks FO thought he simply wasn’t ready to play and shut him down for the year. Oh well. Grade: Incomplete
Overall, this draft could go any way. If they turn the corner, this could end up being a nice foundational piece of a Super Bowl contender. However in 2023 turns out to be the standard and not the exception, it’s definitely more of a rougher return

High Points and Low Points

The Highs
1.) Sea-Lions Bowl III
Offense Ahoy! For the 3rd straight year, Detroit and Seattle faced off in a game where the combined score went into the high 60s. MCDC and Pete Carroll turned down the gritty defenses and let their offenses cook. One simply can’t beat an entertaining offensive shootout. Keep your eyes on 2024 as the two teams are slated to face off once again
2.) More Bobo
Every preseason, Seattle seems to find an undrafted rookie who steals the scene and inevitably gets cut in the preseason. 12s will remember names like Kasen Williams and Troymaine Pope.
So when UDFA Jake Bobo came in with reports of an impeccable work ethic and the respect of the coaching staff and receivers, fans began to get their hopes up again. The hopes grew into hype with the legend of More Bobo. Starting as a quip by Seattle RB coach, Chad Morton. Fans and players alike began pounding the table for More Bobo.
Which got even more passionate when Bobo Bo-Balled the heck out of the 2023 preseason. And to the surprise of all skeptics, Bobo actually made the team. Now, Bobo didn’t turn into a statistical beast with a fun-sounding name in year one (that honor goes to Puka Nacua). However the plays he did get involved in, often led to TDs, which is pretty sweet for a UDFA receiver.
3.) 11 Sacks
Seattle’s pass rush has been its Achilles Heel over the past few years. They paid a pretty penny for their safeties and drafted plenty of edge rushers, nickelbacks, and corners, but they simply could not crack the pass rushing side of the game.
That was the story of the 2023 season as well…for the most part. For one glorious week, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Against the Giants on MNF, nothing could beat Seattle's pass rush. If sacks were cents, then Seattle got their Danny Dimes worth and even added one more against Parris Campbell. Seattle had 47 total sacks on the year and nearly a quarter of them came from this one game. Just a beautiful anomaly.
5.) Tyler Lockett Stands Alone
Steve Largent was the Seahawks first true star and, by retirement, led the NFL in every major career receiving stat. Logically, Largent also holds massives leads in all of Seattle’s franchise records. No receiver has come close to topping them.
Entering the 2015 Draft, Tyler Lockett’s main appeal coming out of Kansas State was his return skills at Kansas State. The hope that he would potentially develop into a good receiver down the line.
As it turns out, he has made good on that hope and far quicker than anticipated. Lockett immediately broke out on the scene, not just as an All-Pro returner, but as a quality receiver, becoming a true safety net and a truly underrated receiver in his own right.
2023 was a special year for Lockett. Not only was he Seattle’s longest tenured player, but he accomplished something special. The previous year, in 2022, against the Raiders, Tyler scored his 51st Receiving TD, bringing him past former teammate Doug Baldwin for sole possession of 2nd place on the Seahawks leaderboards.
In 2023, during the exact same game (Week 11 at the Rams), Tyler Lockett simultaneously surpassed Brian Blades’ marks, both in receptions (581) and yards (7,620). Thereby becoming Seattle’s first receiver since Sam McCullum (all the way back in 1984), to be runner up in all three major receiving stats (Receptions, Yards, and TDs).
Until the likes of DK Metcalf, JSN, or some other guy comes along. No one will have come this close to Steve Largent’s nigh unbreakable stats.
As one final note, Steve Largent was born in Tulsa, OK on September 28th. Tyler Lockett was born in Tulsa, OK on September 28th. Their destinies were intertwined from the start.
6.) The Philly Game
Since I went in detail during the week-by-week. I’ll describe this section with a personal anecdote. A little over 6 years ago, I was given tickets by my parents to the Seahawks-Rams for my birthday. I had always wanted to go to a Seahawks game ON my birthday. The Rams game was the first which fell on that date since I became a fan. The downside was that particular game was the infamous 2017 7-42 blowout at home. It was certainly memorable, but not exactly what you hope to see at your debut game.
I waited patiently for the next game to fall on my birthday, which happened to be the Eagles game this year. However, by the time the game was upon us, Seattle had been spiraling and we’d be running into MNF with Drew Lock at the helm. So me and my dad went to the game with low expectations and went simply to have a good time.
The game was a closer affair than we expected. While we now know the Eagles were in the midst of a historic in-season collapse, at the time, we were holding one of the most electric offenses in the NFL to just 17 Points. However, Seattle’s offense couldn’t exactly do much better, only getting 13 points in the first 58 minutes of the game.
Entering the final two minutes, Seattle got the ball on their own 8 yard line. To win, Seattle would need a miracle, they would need a legend, they would need…Horse Cock Lock. From that point, me and my dad witnessed the Seahawks offense steadily matriculate down the field. Clutch pass after clutch pass
Sitting in the Hawk’s Nest section of Lumen Field, we were front and center as Lock threaded the needle to Jaxon Smith-Njigba for the go-ahead TD. All they needed to do was rely on their defense to finish it and a Julian Love INT would do just that.
It is EASILY our best game of the year and THE best Seahawks game I’ve ever attended. A highest of highs
7.) One Last Win for the Carroll Era
With a brutal loss to Pittsburgh, Seattle’s playoff ambitions gradually faded from view. However that didn’t mean that the Seahawks would go out without a fight. On a trip to a venue full of painful memories, Pete Carroll coached a vintage performance. A close the whole way through, a little bit of chaos, as always, all culminating with a win.
It was very much true to Pete’s tenure with the team. It might not have been as bright as a Lombardi, or even as nice as a playoff berth, but Pete still got to go out on top that night, playoffs be damned.
The Lows
1.) Divisional Punching Bag
Every self-respecting team hopes to come into the season hoping to make the playoffs and win the Super Bowl. But even in lieu of that, a fan can still have fun causing havoc and chaos within the division. Seattle accomplished neither of those goals.
Honestly, it might’ve been our worst showing within the NFC West under Pete Carroll. Against the Rams, We had a deflating Week 1 blow out loss at home and then followed it up with a brutal last second loss off a missed field goal at SoFi, either of those could’ve been the difference from playoff berth and eliminations
The Niners completely whooped us plain and simple. They followed the Seahawks precedent by having turkey dinner in their rivals stadium during the Thanksgiving game and then gave Drew Lock and co an absolute beating in Levi’s
Even a sweep against Arizona couldn’t be whole-heartedly convincing. Arizona had ALL the opportunity to win their 2nd game, if not for Matt Prater basically taking a “wink-wink-nudge-nudge” kind of dive.
It was a completely pathetic showing on that front. You simply can’t come to your divisional games looking like a doormat.
2.) 6-3 is 6-3
Seattle’s 6-3 might be equal to San Francisco’s 6-3 but Seattle’s 6-7 is most certainly NOT San Fran’s 10-3
3.) The AFC North: The Trinal Harbinger of Death
If there was ever a metaphor for the 2023 Season in a short summation, it would be in our matchups with the AFC North. Outside of a lucky win against Cleveland, our season slowly died whenever we faced them.
Seattle kept things pretty close up in every match up to that point (aside from Week 1) but after facing a true quality opponent, they were overwhelmed.
Against the teams outside of the AFC North, San Francisco, and LA, the team went 8-1. Against those teams, they went 1-7.
4.) Jamal Adams.
I wanted this deal to work so bad. He was nothing but the pinnacle of health in New York and he was a young, elite, safety. However…as much as you want something, fate isn’t always in your favor. Adams' time here was met with glimmers of that elite game he boasted but was far outnumbered with shit coverage, constant injuries, and head scratching off-the-field actions. Dude was a passionate player and he really did care for this team. But it never worked out. If not for the Russ trade, we’d be in a far worse spot. Embarrassing, costly, decision in retrospect.

Roster review

QB
The Magic of 2022 lost a little bit of its luster in 2023. Geno Smith’s play regressed a bit and he missed a bit of time. Geno didn’t write back but he certainly picked up the pen again. Drew Lock was also the same wild ride he was in Denver. With the same terrifying lows, dizzying highs, and creamy middles.
Still though, I attest that Geno was still a good QB in 2023, all things considered. Playing behind a hampered O-line and a porous defense is always gonna be an bad hand to be dealt.
His play, while not amazing, was still good (and he’s being paid as such). While I’m almost certain that he isn’t the long term answer at QB, I’m definitely leaning towards him being the guy in 2024, which may or may not involve a rookie this year.
RB
It’s weird to say, but the Seahawks rushing attack was really…underwhelming. Unlike in years past, the group was mostly healthy and we even added a new back into the fray: Zach Charbonnet. Yet despite this, there still was a funk to the group.
Kenneth Walker started the season with 450 Rushing Yards and 6 TDs in his first 6 games but ended his year but mustered only 455 more yards and 2 more TDs over his final 11 Games. Zach Charbonnet was not the complement you expect when you draft a guy in the 2nd Round. A mere 462 yards and just one rushing TD. The momentum simply wasn’t there. And that was basically it.
Outside of Geno’s scrambles and designed runs, the only other RB with any significant (significant being generous) carry time was DeeJay Dallas, who was a COMPLETE afterthought (10 carries for 36 yards). 7th Round rookie, Kenny McIntosh was shut down without ever making a snap too. DeMarco Murray had more rushing attempts on his own in 2014 then the entire Seahawks team had in 2023. It was just like the potential wasn’t ever capitalized on.
However, with Seattle hiring a RB coach, Kennedy Polamalu, who’s bread and butter is building potent dual-threat RB rooms, I think we’re in good hands. He was the guy who helped the duo of Fred Taylor and MJD pop off in Jacksonville.
WTE
Alternatively, the receiving side of the game felt like Seattle’s strong suit.
After some bone-headed moments early-on in the season, DK Metcalf locked in and found far more mature outlets for his passionate play (like using ASL after big plays). Culminating in his 5th straight season with at least 900 receiving yards and 7 TDs, his 3rd 1K season in 4 years, and his 2nd career Pro Bowl.
Tyler Lockett took a step back, but it was to be expected with his age and the addition of JSN. Despite missing the 1,000 yard threshold for the first time since 2018, Lockett was still an essential part of the passing attack in his classic, QB safety blanket role.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba was a slow burn for his rookie year, without the standout numbers you’d typically expect from a 1st round receiver. However, he was always involved in some capacity in the offense and he made some incredible, clutch catches along the way. Love the stuff this kid has. Stoked for year two
Seattle’s never been the city of TEs but Noah Fant and Colby Parkinson both had modest amounts of receiving success. Will Dissly as well excelled behind the scenes as a blocking TE, with a small modicum of receiving production to top it off
Also, while the amount of Jake Bobo we got was nice, I think we probably need More Bobo in 2024.
OT
This unit was rough. From a mix of injuries to simple underperformance. This is the area that I believe was the primary culprit behind our offense’s regression.
Stud LT, Charles Cross missed a few games with injury. Talented RT, Abe Lucas missed a much longer amount of time than anticipated and is reportedly dealing with a potentially career-altering degenerative knee injury that could nag him for his entire career. While I expect Cross to rebound to an even higher level, Lucas’ knee issue seriously throws his long-term future on this team in doubt.
The backups weren’t exactly saving the day either. Stone Forsythe was drafted as a 6th round OT and BOY does he look like it. Jake Curhan was about the same. Good enough to make the roster but very unremarkable. It got so bad that we were wheeling out a geriatric, 41-Year-Old Jason Peters at times.
What seemed like a solid foundation in 2022 has now been found to have been built on soft soil and will need to be addressed in Free Agency or the draft.
iOL
Damien Lewis was always a solid, dependable left guard for Seattle since he was drafted and that was, mostly, the same for 2023. However the right guard spot was much less stable. 4th Round rookie Anthony Bradford and depth guy, Phil Haynes, alternating for playtime. Both had rough seasons and were among the weakest links on the O-line.
As for center, Evan Brown was…alright. Didn’t grade well from PFF but he led the entire offense in total snaps and was mostly solid from what I saw. Although I’m still not convinced on if he’s the long term answer. Is Seattle content to re-sign Brown, do they promote Olu Oluwatimi to full-time starter, do they sign or draft a new player. I can’t say for certain.
D-Line
Seattle’s D-line situation was peculiar. Because it wasn’t a bad unit, personnel-wise. Boye Mafe turned the corner as hoped. Jarran Reed was solid down the middle as nose. While it didn’t show in the stat sheet, Leonard Williams was huge for us down the stretch, getting after the ball all kinds of ways.
And yet…the defense wasn’t… good. The Run D was abysmal…again. The Pass Rush overall was weak…again, and the tackling was miserable…again. If there was any argument for Pete stepping down, it was his inability to repair and reload the D-line after Michael Bennett and Frank Clark left the team. I can only hope that Mike Macdonald can do better in that regard
Off-Ball LB
In the 2023 offseason, Seattle oddly didn’t really make a lot of long-term investments for ILB. They let Cody Barton walk and didn’t draft anyone to replace him. Instead they hoped that another year with Jordyn Brooks, a fan favorite reunion with Bobby Wagner, and a signing of a very cheap and very washed Devin Bush would move the needle.
In some ways, it did. Bobby Wagner in the box, against the run and the short pass, showed just why he’s a future 1st-Ballot Hall of Famer. He led the league in tackles with 183, a career high . But his coverage skills have waned with age.. Jordyn Brooks was decent, but just decent. Bush, predictably, was a non-factor. Without an infusion of youth, teams would just beat on them with the intermediary and dink, dunk, and run their way for first downs.
CB
For the 2nd Year in a row, Seattle had a rookie cornerback steal the show. In 2022, they found a diamond in the rough with Riq Woolen in the 5th. This time though, they would find a diamond in…wherever you usually find diamonds. Devon Witherspoon was right up there with Christian Gonzalez for the best corner prospect in the 2023 draft and while Gonzalez slid a bit, Spoon was drafted in the Top 5. And thankfully, Spoon played like how you hope a Top 5 corner would. Dude’s potential is sky high.
Riq Woolen, on the other hand, faced a bit of a sophmore slump. He basically played like the inverse Bobby Wagner: great in coverage like last year, but his tackling regressed big time. Dude simply could not wrap up players and played away from contact. Ultimately leading to him being benched late in the year. Riq still has a rawness to his game and spent most of the offseason rehabbing from knee surgery. Even with the rough period, it’s not all doom and gloom. The game-sealing tackle against Tennessee shows that he can still pack a wallop. He just needs to iron out the kinks.
Aside from those big two. Tre Brown showed that Seattle’s 3-Man 2021 Draft Class wasn’t all duds. Even post-patellar tendon injury, the man showed that he can still be a competent corner. Michael Jackson Sr. and Artie Burns backed up the depth but aren’t probably in the long term cards for the team.
S
Money, it’s a crime. Seattle’s decision to pay both starting safeties top-level money aged fairly poorly.
Quandre Diggs is probably the best defensive player Seattle’s had post L.O.B. not named Bobby Wagner. However, even he showed his age in 2023. Like with Riq, it was his tackling that was his biggest flaw. Quandre was such a maddening player because he still wasn’t awful in coverage but when you lead the entire team with 13 missed tackles, that’s something that you can’t really rely on.
As mentioned before, the Jamal Adams experiment ended as a resounding failure, whether by inability to cover, or the fact that his head was more effective at generating interceptions than his hands, or that he could never seem to stay healthy. And of the injuries he received, they seemed to sap more and more of the athleticism. It’s a dang shame.
On the plus side, The Fall of Jamal allowed for other players on Seattle’s D to shine. Julian Love was signed to be a backup to Jamal in 2023 and, in a lot of ways, showed up more than Jamal did. A game-changing INT against Cleveland and two critical interceptions in the Philly game were both crucial factors in getting those wins, which were also probably the best teams we beat last year. He wasn’t the perfect safety but he was a damn fun player to watch and a surprising nominee for the Pro Bowl team.
Aside from Love. Two promising players for the future stand on the horizon. Jerrick Reed II showed a lot of promise on special teams for a 6th round rookie prior to his injury and 2022 Nickelback corner Coby Bryant pivoted to safety, which may be an interesting route to see him develop further. With Diggs and Jamal both being released, now is the time for a new era in Seattle’s storied secondary.
Special Teams
Honestly not much to say this time around because this group remained as stable as ever. Jason Myers was still the above average kicker you hope to depend on (most of the time). Michael Dickson is the elite punter who STILL doesn’t get the love he deserves. And rookie Long Snapper Chris Stoll stepped into the role with the poise and composure of a veteran.
Larry Izzo always brought his A-game to this unit and I can only hope that Jay Harbaugh can bring a modicum of that stability.

Interior Offensive Line
Damien Lewis is a FA and is likely to get paid out of our range. Phil Haynes and Evan Brown are Free Agents and both could be improved upon. With an offense full of young playmakers, they need to be supported in the trenches to thrive.
Interior Defensive Line
A lot of promising pieces on the EDGE but the inside needs work. Big Fish FA Dre’Mont Jones was disappointing and, while I really like Leonard Williams, we have to ink a long-term contract to keep him here. Luckily, there are plenty of great names in Free Agency and in the Draft so it’s a great time to want there.
Off-Ball Linebacker To re-state from the roster review. Brooks is solid, but not next level. He could be re-signed, he could be let go. Bobby is still talented, but is declining with age. Bush is garbo. Seattle needs to inject some youth into this group
Replacing Overpaid Position Groups (Safeties/Tight Ends)
Seattle had invested a lot of money into Will Dissly, Quandre Diggs, and Jamal Adams. And their play in 2023 didn’t really warrant such big paychecks. Even before the events of this week, me and Hulkbuster had this area as a big need to improve on. And Seattle bit the bullet, releasing all three in Free Agency. Now, Seattle needs to rebuild these spots from the ground up, avoiding the pitfalls of the past (paying big money to older vets)
Addressing the QB thing
Geno’s here and everyone’s tentatively operating under the assumption that he will be starter in 2024. However, the future still looms ahead. It’s time for Seattle to look inward and begin asking themselves the big questions. Who are they, and what do THEY want to be as a team? Will they push the buck to 2024 and sign another Drew Lock-type to back up Geno? Will they draft a QB? Pete’s motto was Always Compete but does the same logic apply to the MacSchneider regime? A lot of questions for the future.

Why Root for Seattle

Seattle is a team of exciting futures and promising young talent. After years of stagnation, the ownership group has brought in a brand new coaching staff with a young, but highly regarded reputation. They are a team with a stable foundation and recent run of success among the best teams in the conference. The rivalries are fierce, the 12s fandom is loud and proud and we rep our team with tenacity and passion. Seattle has been among the most stable of franchises as well. Since the turn of the millenia, there are really only two years that I would call downright awful years (2008 and 2009). Aside from that, our floor is just mediocre and our ceiling is Super Bowl contenders.
If you choose Seattle, you can truly experience one of the most electric, and exciting teams in all of football. An experience that has quickly become one of my all-time favorite pastimes

So, I manage to get inside the files of Starfield using the BAE program and this are all the names I've found, BTW, I still dont know exactly how the naming thing works, because I've used some of the names on the list and Vasco did not say them, so I dont know if caps matter, if the names on the list should be in their correct position (i.e. a last name being put as a last name and not just as a first name etc...), so any help with this would be appreciate it!

UPDATE #1: it seems that for vasco to say your name you have to play with voice and text in english, if you play with voices in english but the text is in another language, vasco will not say your name, big L, but still, amazing game, cant stop playing it

2023.08.02 22:04 TDA792 New fan, just finished Babylon's Ashes - my thoughts so far

Hello!
I'm back, with a part six to my previous set of posts, found here, here, here, here, and here. I'm so sorry for the delay, its been nearly six months, but life got in the way! My bookmark stayed on chapter 45 for the majority of that time, not moving.
To reiterate, I'm a new fan to The Expanse, fast-burned here from the Mass Effect fandom, going through the books and short stories prior to delving into the TV show.
Babylon's Ashes was... hm. How do I say this... Okay, so, I wanted to like this one. I still want to like it. I wish with all my heart that it resonated with me like the previous ones did, but I think the fact that I was able to put it down for a few months near the end of the story speaks volumes. I wasn't a fan of its expansive cast of POV characters; I think four has always served it well, and I was utterly confounded by the plethora of POV characters, it made it hard to understand each character's arc when I was constantly switching POV. I primarily listened to the audiobook version while driving, and really struggled to focus on which character I was listening to, and what was going on. And so much of the plot just felt sort of... meandering? As a result? I don't know, I just didn't feel like the story was all that coherent to me.
Maybe I've just been spoiled by the tightly-paced plots of Abaddon's Gate and Nemesis Games. I don't know. But we had not four, but seventeen (Holden, Alex, Amos, Naomi, Clarissa, Marco, Filip, Salis, Jakulski, Vandercaust, Roberts, Bobbie, Avasarala, Fred, Pa, Dawes, Prax) POV characters in this one, not including prologue and epilogue. I'll be real, right now I couldn't tell you which Medina engineer was which, or what exact relevance Prax's story had to the rest of the novel, or how I'm supposed to remember Dawes' headspace in his two chapters that are twenty-six chapters apart from one another.
I searched up the Behind The Scenes for The Phantom Menace because I wanted a gif of Rick McCallum's face upon reviewing the first cut of the movie, but actually I think the whole exchange is gold.
"It's bold, in terms of jerking people around... I must admit, I may have gone too far."

"The tricky part is, you can't take any of those pieces out of there now, because each one kinda takes you to the next place and you can't jump because you wouldn't know where you are."
Like I said, I wanted to like it, but I just couldn't wrap my head around some of the authorial decisions. The overall story was good, but not as good as previous entries; its like Babylon's Ashes was a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none. The scenes on the Pella between Filip and Marco felt like an inferior sequel to the scenes between Naomi and Marco in Nemesis Games. Marco crapped out; he was a great, punchable villain in Nemesis Games, but here he kind of overstayed his narrative welcome. It was fantastic when Filip left, but nowhere near as jubilant as when Naomi made her daring escape out the airlock.
The whole thing could be summarised as 'anti-climactic'. Fred Johnson died, not in a fight, but because of a fight, due to a stroke. Marco died getting turned to cosmic dust, not in a big final battle. In fact, this whole Free Navy business was essentially a war without a notable big battle happening, besides the Azure Dragon thing and the skirmish that ultimately killed Fred.
...Maybe I'm just salty that we didn't get much of the whole alien side of things happening. After all, I'm from the Mass Effect fanbase, you already know what we're about.
This was the second book to feature nothing particularly alien in it, which perhaps is something I didn't take well to. My favourite parts of the series have been about the mysteries of the protomolecule and the ring gates, and I'd love to see more of that.
I am incredibly interested in what is going on with the high traffic problem in the ring gates. Why on Earth would the creators include such a feature as to... I don't know, separate the atoms of ships that came through when traffic was high? Is there really another precursor creature out there, one that killed the protomolecule creators? If so, perhaps its some form of sacrifice? Who knows?
I would rank the books so far as such: Abaddon's Gate > Caliban's War > Nemesis Games > Cibola Burn > Leviathan Wakes > Babylon's Ashes.
Sorry guys, I don't like being negative, so I'm gonna move on swiftly... to gushing about Strange Dogs.
Oh my God, this was a fantastic short story. Learning about what's been going on on Laconia, getting to know (just one) POV character over the whole time...! Cara was a great POV character, her story almost gave me fairy-tale or fable energy. After all, the strange dogs are like some kind of djinn, granting three wishes that by the end of it, we're all wishing had never been... wished. I'm so curious about them, and about just about everything else on Laconia! Cara was right, it is kinda sad that everything on Earth has a name and been catalogued. Imagine how fantastic it would be to go to a world where nothing has a name, where every day you find something brilliant and new in the natural world of the new planet that you - and no other human - has ever seen before?! And without all the weird stuff going on like on Ilus in Cibola Burn. Man, I was born too early :(
What exactly are the dogs? They're made from the alien protomolecule, right, and controlled by the orbital stations? They can't be controlled by the soldiers and scientists, can they? If they were, how could that make sense...? But if they're not, then how did they get there? Hmmm...
I'm also curious to find out exactly what relationship Duarte and the soldiers have with the colonists/scientists there. It certainly seems like they've seized control over it, especially with what we heard about the Laconia gate at the end of Babylon's Ashes. Do the colonists know what kind of situation they're in? Who could help them?
And what's going to happen to Cara and fixed-Xan? Will they be okay? I doubt the parents would be. For all dad knew, it was like a real-life version of The Thing. In that instance, I guess I couldn't blame him for swinging the knife and locking him in the cupboard.
Oh crap! Now that I think about it, I can't believe I didn't make that connection before! The Thing is quite clearly a great source of inspiration for the kind of fucked up shit the protomolecule can do to humans.
Ah, space... the final frontier. Politicking in the Sol system is cool and all, but there's a whole damn nexus of gateways sitting right there that I'm so curious about! I hope the next three books will have us spend some more time out there discovering the wider galaxy!

Dead Island 2 it's a hell of a surprise, considering the long and difficult development cycle: it's fun, it's deep and has a lot of content, and the FLESH system is a great idea. A successful reboot for the people at Dambuster Studios.

There’s little motivation to slog through extremely same-y missions and side quests. It’s this general feeling that permeates throughout Dead Island 2; what’s on offer isn’t broken or flagrantly bad (with the exception of the checkpointing system), but it is tired, antiquated and bland.

Dead Island 2 manages to pull off an incredibly fun experience, and delivers on some of the missed promise of the first title. That said, there's not much here beyond hyper-active zombie slaying, so if that's not your bag you probably wont enjoy it.

Dead Island 2 does a great job of reanimating this dormant zombie-battling series, with the gore-filled combat and excessive weaponry that goes well with the oversaturated LA setting. It's an enjoyable romp, but at the same time, ironically feels like it's playing it safe.

Just playing Dead Island 2 in 2023 feels like a minor miracle after such a protracted production cycle. Nevertheless, the novelty of finally experiencing this long-in-development sequel wears off pretty quickly. Too Much Gaming - Carlos Hernandez - 7 / 10
Dead Island 2 failed to stand out as the original game did since there are now a good amount of zombie-themed titles that are more than capable of scratching this particular itch. It feels so late in the game that other games like it have evolved and experimented with different concepts while this series is still trying to get back on its feet.

Was Dead Island 2 worth the wait? Hell yes! The sheer carnage you can cause on the streets of LA is marvellous to witness, and with Dambuster's attention to detail, uncovering hidden caches of weapons, meeting the colourful variety of survivors around the city, and hanging with friends is a ton of fun.

Dead Island 2 is a huge return for the series. Fans of the first game will find much more to enjoy than just their nostalgia in this new title, and I can see a whole new generation of gamers falling in love with zombie-chopping in Hell-A.

Dead Island 2 is fantastic. It knows what it is, and that’s a ton of sneakily smart dumb fun. The FLESH system is horrific and awful and the best. Smashing, chopping, burning, and exploding humans has never been so fun. At $70 some may want to wait as it isn’t the longest campaign. I’m already doing a second playthrough though, and this is a game I’ll be coming back to for a long time.

UFC Vegas 71
This card was one of the roughest ones to break down so far this year, as there are so many forgettable fighters with limited UFC experience on the card. It has therefore taken a lot more tape to form my opinions of these fighters, and even more so to actually break down these fights stylistically. As with most weeks, I’ve cut a few corners with fights I know I have no interest in betting, especially where there’s a UFC debut or someone with limited tape.

Sergei Pavlovich v Curtis Blaydes
Heavyweight prospects are very difficult to get a read on when they start making strides up the top 10 rankings, as most of the time their win streaks just revolve around womping opponents in round 1, and we have no idea what their overall skillset is across the different areas of MMA – and the time will come where they eventually need it. Sergei Pavlovich is no exception, as it’s kind of impossible to really know what sort of a fighter he is if he isn’t sleeping opponents inside five minutes – giving us a sample size of just 1/6 UFC bouts where that wasn’t the case.
Curtis Blaydes is possibly the most stylistically-challenging fighter at 265lbs, and many believe him to be the true test for Jon Jones’ Heavyweight adventure. Blaydes is a suffocating wrestler with decent enough striking credentials, which almost makes him an automatic top 10 UFC Heavyweight amongst a division of blubber that can’t get off their backs when taken down. Curtis has gotten the better of some of Heavyweight’s best names in the last few years, and the only men to defeat him are N’Gannou (x2) and Lewis – the two men with the most punching power inside the division.
The first N’Gannou loss was a cut stoppage, but the following two losses show that Blaydes can be beaten by an opportunistic strike from anyone with that hard hitting power – which Pavlovich certainly has. The problem is, given Blaydes’ style, no opponent actually gets a whole lot of opportunities to land that killer shot, as they spend most of the rounds in the clinch or on the mat, and some of them even have that typical gun-shy approach as they’re scared of getting overzealous. I can quote the two hard hitters that did KO Blaydes, but there’s a much longer list of one-punchers who didn’t (Rozenstruik, Volkov, Mark Hunt, JDS, Justin Willis). So really, unless you can be confident in their anti-wrestling, no one deserves to be a favourite over Blaydes.
Going back to the opening paragraph – there’s very little to really know about Pavlovich’s wrestling/grappling, aside from what we saw in the Alistair Overeem fight in his UFC debut in 2018. He got tripped from the clinch but looked like an absolute fish off his back. We didn’t see much at all, but he didn’t look to get his lower body into play at all…he just accepted positions and tried to control Overeem’s wrists. Overeem landed a one punch ground-and-pound finish, which was pretty impressive. Shame we couldn’t have seen that drag out for longer.
Unfortunately, you have to take 90 seconds of footage from almost five years ago with a pinch of salt. It was his UFC debut, and we often see fighters make rapid improvements to their game once they finally touch base within the main organisation, and Pavlovich’s wrestling/grappling ability could be no different. It could also have been pretty good at that stage anyway, and the 90 seconds could have been misleading. It’s just foolish to take that small info as fact, and anyone who does is just looking for confirmation bias.
Therefore, I am hesitant to really plant a flag here. Blaydes absolutely deserves to be favoured given his style, experience, and the dated footage we saw from Pavlovich…but there’s still a very wide grey area that makes that confidence all based off assumptions. This fight kind of sits in a similar position to Holloway and Allen last week, as Blaydes could end up looking anywhere from -110 to -1000 in hindsight. I was happy to play Holloway at -150 in that position, because I thought it would have likely taken a 25 minute performance from Allen to get the better or him…but Blaydes is a steeper price and Pavlovich only needs to land one solid punch to decide the fight. Therefore, I think the line is pretty accurate where it is. It’s a pass for me.
In terms of props, I think anyone wanting to play Pavlovich should probably just take the KO price. I don’t think anyone at Heavyweight could really best Curtis Blaydes on the scorecards across 25 minutes, and Pavlovich doesn't strike me as a guy who will be attempting submissions.
How I line this fight: Sergei Pavlovich +160 (38%), Curtis Blaydes -160 (62%)

Song Yadong v Ricky Simon
This fight has been moved to headline next week, and it is now a 5 rounder. This changes the dynamic of the fight massively in my opinion and I have cashed out of my bet. I might even bet Simon as a result.
A few years ago, Ricky Simon was one of those “preliminary card betting legends” that I sometimes refer to, where his wrestling style made him an absolute nightmare for unranked fighters and betting on him to win by Submission or Decision was something you could always be confident in.
Unfortunately for us gamblers, Simon has earnt his way into the top 15 at Bantamweight, so the well has mostly dried up in terms of capitalising on that stylistic dominance. He absolutely deserves it though, this guy fought and beat Merab Dvalishvili in his UFC debut (albeit very controversial finish).
The transition to being a ranked fighter has definitely not been plain sailing for Simon though, as a humiliating loss in under a minute to the ghost of Urijah Faber in 2019 kind of stained his reputation beyond repair. He followed that up with a loss to Rob Font, where we became acutely aware that his one-dimensional style wasn’t going to cut it against the division’s best. He’s not an awful striker, but you can tell it’s still a work in progress and he doesn’t have enough power to really earn the respect of the division’s better strikers. In short – if Simon gets stuck on the feet against a capable striker, he’s probably not going to win that fight. So the takedown conversation is the one to focus on here.
After those two losses, Simon took a step back in calibre, winning four in a row against Gaetano Pirrello, Brian Kelleher, Raphael Assuncao and Jack Shore. The last was an impressive win, but these results re-enforce the idea that Simon’s true potential lies as a gatekeeper to the top 10. Simply put, he should absolutely beating those first three at this stage.
So how good is Song Yadong and can he pass the test? Well firstly, Yadong is actually a top 10 ranked fighter already, and has some impressive wins on his record that indicates he deserves to be there. He’s also still so young and will likely be making massive improvements as the years go by. That ties into a third and most important point – he’s trained at Team Alpha Male for years.
TAM has always been seen as THE gym for wrestlers and elite takedown defence amongst the lower weight classes, and any fighter that’s been doing their daily training amongst the likes of Chad Mendes, Danny Castillo, Uriah Faber, Chad Mendes, Cody Garbrandt, Josh Emmett etc. for numerous years is probably tough to take down and hold down! There looks to have been clear improvements from Song as well, as he stuffed 13/14 takedown attempts from Cory Sandhagen most recently. I’m not expecting him to have a similar success figures against Simon, but I think the positive signs of resistance he has shown in both his initial takedown defence and subsequent scrambles should give him the advantage against Simon, as he’ll be forcing him to engage more on the feet.
Simon’s a beast wrestler that hits Merab-type numbers when it comes to takedowns, but what those impressive figures don’t tell you is that they also indicate that said fighter doesn’t have very good top control. Simon landed six takedowns against Rob Font, but still lost the bout because he couldn’t keep Font grounded long enough. When the two of them were at distance, there was a much clearer display of dominance with Font’s striking. Yadong can and should demonstrate the same advantage…except with even more power.
Font’s recent KO of Adrian Yanez may have you disputing it, but Song Yadong hits a lot harder than Font, and should be able to dish out a significant amount of damage whilst he’s on the feet with Simon. Enough damage to convince the judges to score rounds in his favour, even if he suffers three takedowns and about 90 second of position control.
For me, Simon just doesn’t do enough to really put his stamp on rounds from a damage or dominant perspective and, considering Song does, I think he’s going to have to fight a pretty perfect performance to confidently get the upper hand each round. I know Simon has looked good in his four recent wins, but the calibre of competition is night and day to someone like Song Yadong, who went 2-2 in rounds against Cory Sandhagen less than a year ago. My main concern for Song Yadong comes mainly in the cardio department, as Simon’s style will push him to the limit if the fight goes long…which is probably the outcome of Simon’s most likely path to victory.
I'll have a revised breakdown for next week.

Bobby Green v Jared Gordon
I see they chose to keep Jared Gordon away from a Paddy Pimblett rematch then!? Hilarious that people think they’d actually give the likes of Drew Dober to Pimblett if they wouldn’t grant a rematch over a split decision.
Anyway, we know what we’re getting from Gordon – fundamental, “meat and potatoes” striking with a desire to wrestle and grapple. In this bout he’s expected to be at a striking disadvantage to Bobby Green for sure, but the way he works in his takedown attempts, and the success he actually has with them, will be the key if he’s going to get the victory here.
The problem is that, as someone who has been a full-card bettor for many years, Bobby Green has actually been very unreliable against this kind of level, and seeing him shit the bed really would not surprise me. He got this massive boost in popularity and respect when he went down to the wire (and arguably beat) Rafael Fiziev, and the UFC helped change his trajectory with a gimme fight against Al Iaquinta on a big stage (he delivered a very Un-Bobby Green like result of a 1st round KO), followed by a short notice main event against Islam Makhachev. Green is suddenly a fan favourite with name value, despite having been in the UFC for literally a decade and managing a 10-9-1 record within the organisation.
Green is a talented fighter, and that record is quite deceiving – but it demonstrates the underlying narrative of his whole career…he is unreliable. He allowed himself to get outhustled by Thiago Moises and lost a close decision as a -320 favourite just before that Fiziev fight. He dropped a round in another close fight to Clay Guida a year before that as a -275 favourite. Before that he lost decisions that many media members (I also) think he won against Francisco Trinaldo and Drakkar Klose. It paints the picture that, whilst Green is clearly talented, he lets fight run much closer than he should and isn’t particularly trustworthy against a hustling, dedicated, and well-rounded opponent. Regardless of who “should” have won the fights, the bookmakers settle bets based off the official decision.
Anyway, should Green beat Jared Gordon here? Yes he definitely SHOULD. But as I often say, you are betting on the price, not the fighter. Bobby Green is not a guy you should trust at a big favourite pricetag. He’s consistently managed to dial his performances up and down so that they become closer affairs than the odds indicate, making him the type of fighter you’d want to back as an underdog, not a favourite. Referring to that 10-9-1 UFC record, he’s actually been the underdog in more than half of those fights.
Gordon’s the very definition of a fighter that’s hard to look good against. He has an 11-1 record in decisions throughout his career, and considering Green isn’t much of a knockout threat (just two in the UFC), I think this one plays out a bit closer than the odds indicate. However, given the advantages he has on paper, Green is still the worthy favourite…resulting in there being no value on either side really.
How I line this fight: Bobby Green -200 (67%), Jared Gordon +200 (33%)

Brad Tavares v Bruno Silva
Brad Tavares is a guy that you should always be looking to bet when he’s facing a wrestlegrappler, as he has some of the best anti-wrestling and takedown defence that we’ve seen in the Octagon (80% takedown defence across 21 UFC fights is absurd). Unfortunately, this is one of the rare times where it looks like he’ll be getting a pure kickboxing match against Bruno Silva.
Bruno Silva is basically the Middleweight Johnny Walker. He came into the UFC with an absolutely chaotic approach, and scored knockouts in terrifying fashion. There wasn’t a whole lot of technique or process attributed to those wins, but sometimes just going balls to the wall and creating that chaos will be enough for certain fighters.
Also like Johnny Walker, we’ve seen some hesitance from Silva in his last two fights, but I think this may well be down to the opponents. He faced and went to a decision with Alex Pereira, who is way too high level a striker for you to just go YOLO against. He even tried wrestling in that one, without a whole lot of success. Next he faced Gerald Meerschaert, where he looked overly concerned with the takedown threat and didn’t let his hands go as a result. I expected a similar kind of fight when Joe Pyfer faced GM3 a few weeks, ago, but Pyfer did exactly what you’re supposed to and showed little respect for Gerald and just walked him down accordingly. The wrong move from Blindado there, but at least he sort of tried to implement a gameplan?
So I suppose I’m a little bit unsure of what kind of fighter we’re going to see Silva look like this weekend. I think his best chance of winning against Tavares would be via that Round 1 Rabies style, as we’ve seen Brad suffer knockouts in the early goings (Edmen Shahbazyan and Robert Whittaker). To be fair, he has also gone the distance with a bunch of hard hitters too (Du Plessis most recently, as well as Yoel Romero and Izzy Adesanya). In terms of minute winning, I think Tavares is definitely the more put-together striker, and has a much more well-rounded skillset to win minutes here relatively comfortably.
This one’s therefore a pretty easy one to break down in my eyes. Either Bruno Silva lands a heavy shot and hurts/finishes Tavares, or the latter chips away at his opponent and goes on to win a decision or score a late stoppage.
I’m certainly favouring Tavares here, as he is the better fighter overall, and there’s a small chance that Blindado’s different approaches in his last two fights is actually the signs of a changed man (not a major factor here, but it’s gotta be worth a couple of % of probability!). However, Tavares is now 37 years old and has been finished early before, so I’m not willing to say he’s a lock or a strong favourite. I’d say Tavares probably deserves to be around the -180 mark, which is just enough to warrant a bet here.
How I line this fight: Brad Tavares -180 (65%), Bruno Silva +180 (35%)
Bet or Pass: 2u Brad Tavares to Win (-155)
Notable Props: Tavares is somewhat of a decision machine, so I guess backing him to win by Decision is a viable option as well (though I have no idea what the line will be currently).
Live Betting Strategy: Tavares might have to go through the fire in a tricky round 1. If Silva wins R1 then I'd recommend betting Tavares and trusting his gas tank turns the tide.

Jeremiah Wells v Matt Semelsberger
Jeremiah Wells isn’t really that good. He’s had good results in the UFC so far, with three stoppage wins…but Warley Alves is a shell of his former self, and Blood Diamond has no real business being in the UFC aside from being Adesanya’s mate. The victory over Court McGee was an impressive one, but if Wells hadn’t hit that R1 win condition I have a suspicion he’d have gotten progressively worse as the fight wore on.
Wells has one of those jacked physiques, where fighters are usually carrying so much muscle mass that they’re actually fighting in the wrong weight class. Similarly statured fighters such as Alonzo Menifield and William Knight also come to mind…as does their poor cardio that falls off a cliff after about 7 minutes. I can’t say for sure if Wells will suffer the same fate, but it’s definitely a strong possibility. His record also implies a similar narrative as, despite being 11-2-1 overall, he’s 2-2-1 in fights that have gone to a decision (and that’s all against non-UFC opposition).
Wells’ opponent, Matthew Semelsberger, will be four inches taller – and is also six years younger than Wells. Semi the Jedi is a decently well-rounded fighter, with glimpses of power and really good defensive grappling…but his takedown defence is his biggest weakness. One of Semelsberger’s greatest strengths is his grit, durability and cardio, which should all be useful against a hard hitting fighter that’s likely to slow down.
In terms of their skillsets whilst they’re fresh, I think Semelsberger is the far more fundamentally sound striker here. Wells’ technique isn’t up to scratch, and you can tell he’s relied far more on his power than his actual process to carry him through striking exchanges in his career. Given how tough we know Semelsberger is, I would expect Semi the Jedi to actually get the better of the striking portions of this fight, assuming he doesn’t get finished early.
Wells should have some success with his wrestling here, but Semelsberger’s got really good get ups and, the more he can force Wells to initiate takedowns, the more he will drain Jeremiah’s gas tank. We saw Semi turn the tables against AJ Fletcher in similar fashion, where he relied on his cardio and upped the pace in rounds two and three when his opponent couldn’t keep up. A similar approach will serve him well here.
To me, this seems like a situation where Wells’ 3-0 UFC record is being overblown. Winning by one-punch KO will only get you so far in the division, especially if you don’t have a whole lot of technique to really back it up as a plan B. If Wells doesn’t find that one-punch KO, I think he’s going to have to wrestle his way to a win here…which I don’t think he really has the cardio to do against a savvy anti-grappler like Semelsberger.
The wrong man is favoured here, in my opinion. Personally I’d have Semelsberger as around the -137 favourite. There’s clear value on him as a result, so a 1.5u bet on Semelsberger appeals.
How I line this fight: Jeremiah Wells +137 (42%), Matthew Semelsberger -137 (58%)

Iasmin Lucindo v Brogan Walker
From what I can remember, Iasmin Lucindo looked pretty decent in her regional scene tape. She then fought competitively against Yazmin Jauregui, who I reckon could be destined for the Top 10 in the future. It’s a shame when the UFC match two talented fighters against one another for their debut…but it seems the oddsmakers at least recognise Lucindo’s potential.
Brogan Walker, on the other hand, got to the final of the latest TUF season, only to be soundly beaten by Juliana Miller. She didn’t stuff a single takedown in that fight and spent 70% of the entire fight giving up control time. Miller has since gone on to lose her first UFC bout since winning the show, who was 1-4 and coming off a three year lay off. I know all of that was wikicapping…but I think it paints an accurate picture of where abouts Brogan Walker’s skillset lies.
However, both women are young and haven’t fought in the Octagon for almost a year, which implies there’s room for some significant improvements in between fights. For many fighters, their first and second appearances in the UFC will be the first time they begin to train full time, so you have to be careful putting so much weight on debut footage.
It would be unwise to back Iasmin Lucindo at -275 for those reasons, but I have no real reason to believe that Brogan Walker will be an underdog I want to side with. I’ve no interest in betting this fight.
How I line this fight: Iasmin Lucindo -200 (67%), Brogan Walker +200 (33%)

Karol Rosa v Norma Dumont
This is one of those certified “fight goes to decision” spots I think. Karol Rosa has produced the better numbers historically in significant strikes and takedowns landed, but she’s also faced the worse competition and tends to get as good as she gives. I think anyone identifying a significant edge for either well-rounded Brazilian woman is clutching at straws here.
The Fight Goes to Decision prop should probably be like -600 here to be honest. I often find that sometimes the books are a bit hesitant to really dig in to the short prices of overs, as the public generally like backing finishes and they’ll soon be wracking up liability if they offer some big prices for KOs or Submissions.
That’s as far as I’m going to delve into this one, as it seems like one of the most mirror-image type fights you can find on paper. I’m just interested in what they line FGTD as, and whether or not it’s a good enough price to be used as one half of a parlay.
How I line this fight: Fight goes to Decision -600 (86%), Fight Doesn’t Go to Decision +600 (14%)

Priscila Cachoeira v Karine Silva
Priscila Cachoeira is genuinely one of the most exciting female fighters to watch on the roster lol. She’s pretty one dimensional but she’s actually a really hard hitter with good cardio and commitment to a forward pressure gameplan, and it’s allowed her to have much more success than she actually should have in the UFC. The books always line her as a significant underdog in literally every fight because of the usual gap in skill, but Cachoeira has managed to go 4-4 in the UFC nothing but power and grit.
Karine Silva makes her second walk to the UFC Octagon, having won on Contender Series and her subsequent UFC debut. Silva’s record is impressive and full of promise, at 15-4 with all victories via stoppage (8 KOs, 7 Subs)…but her actual performances in those two fights were largely underwhelming. She made the typical BJJ rookie error in her DWCS fight of attempting to play guard for an entire round, where she absorbed a few cutting elbows and did literally nothing useful with the guard she insisted on maintaining. She caught an opportunistic guillotine in the second round when it appeared the tide was turning against her and she was starting to slow down (Remember, she has won all of her fights inside the distance…which usually correlates to bad cardio).
Against Poliana Botelho in her UFC debut, she didn’t really appear to have much of an answer on the feet, before she landed a clubbing overhand right and followed up with a quick submission whilst Botelho was rocked.
I’m sometimes guilty of disregarding a fighter’s wins by finish as “luck” sometimes, especially when it comes in a fight they aren’t looking good in. Silva’s record clearly demonstrates that this is no fluke, and to a certain extent certain fighters are way more potent to create finishes than others. But with that said, I just cannot ignore the fact that there’s a very plausible likelihood that Silva would have gone 0-2 in both of those aforementioned fights.
I’ve written all of this, and now I’ve just glanced at the betting line. The books are sharp, and haven’t gone as overboard on I was expecting them to. With Cachoeira usually sitting at a +200 or greater price range, and Silva being touted as an exciting prospect, I thought Silva might find herself in the -250 to -400 range, which would have offered an interesting bit of value on Cachoeira. Instead, they’ve already anticipated that Silva is somewhat of a hype-job that will eventually come unstuck, and have deemed her a slight, -160 favourite instead. Sharp odds compiling!
There’s therefore no value. Only way I’d be interested in this fight is if the public “capitalise” and steam in on Silva/fade Cachoeira. Don’t see it happening significantly enough to warrant a bet.
How I line this fight: Priscila Cachoeira +150 (40%), Karine Silva -150 (60%)
Bet or Pass: Pass unless Cachoeira hits +200…not going to happen.
Notable Props: If the books have got the moneyline sharp, I expect they’ll be sharp across the board here.
Live Betting Strategy: Cachoeira has tenacity and a good gas tank. If Silva throws the kitchen sink at her in Round 1 and cannot get the finish, I trust Cachoeira to turn the tide.

Ricky Glenn v Christos Giagos
Rick(y) Glenn is 34 years old at Lightweight who frequently takes long, random spells of inactivity. He loses to Kevin Aguilar, takes an 18 month break, then returns to knock out Joaquim Silva and draw with Grant Dawson in the span of four months. He has absolutely no right to be able to do that! And now he’s been inactive for 18 months again!
That string of history alone is enough to make me hesitant about getting involved in betting one of his fights. It just screams volatility. I wouldn’t be surprised if, at 34, this 18 month layoff is enough for him to regress and fight like shit on Saturday night…but if he’s looking as good as ever then this is a reasonably favourable fight against Christos Giagos.
Giagos has shown everyone his strengths, limitations and weaknesses in great detail over the course of his UFC career. He clearly does his best work as a wrestlegrappler, but cardio issues have put a real limitation on how successful he can be with that style, considering he’s not actually that much of a submission threat. Giagos has lost round 3 on the judges’ scorecards in each of his last four UFC bouts that have gone the distance, and he’s 2-4 in terms of finishes. When you consider that Glenn is a decent scrambler and can work hard to get back to his feet or reverse position, I think this is the type of fight that’s going to demand more than Giagos can offer from a cardio perspective.
In regards to Giagos’ striking, he just looks like a deer in the headlights on the feet these days. He seems scared to engage, and just wants to skirt around the outside and dart in with one punch attacks. The Arman Tsarukyan loss was the most concerning, as the younger prospect hadn’t really shown any serious power in the hands in previous fights…yet Giagos didn’t want to press forward or try to win the fight at all. Perhaps it was a fear of the takedown. Either way, whenever Giagos faces any sort of adversity, he wilts and quits pretty quickly too.
Glenn’s got decent power, and whilst I’m not convinced he’s an amazing striker, he knows how to use the fundamentals to land effectively. Glenn’s biggest advantage, however, will be in the overall grappling ability and cardio here. In his draw with Grand Dawson, he scored 10-8s in round 3. In his impressive win over Gavin Tucker in 2017, he scored 2 x 10-8s in the third, as well as a very rare 10-7 on one judge’s scorecard.
So, to wrap up, I think Glenn’s a decent parlay piece in terms of both men’s skillsets…but there’s a voice in my head telling me to be wary of his lay-offs and injury history. I think I may end up playing him, but it’ll have to be a smaller bet as a result, because -225 is a steep number for a fighter that could capitulate (but it’s also very hard to factor these intangibles into how I actually line this fight).
I think there’s instead a potential opportunity to back Glenn ITD here. I know Glenn’s finishing ability has kind of dried up in as soon as he got to UFC level, but if Giagos is the quitter that I believe him to be, then Glenn’s ability to come on strong in the latter half of the fight should see him get close. Also, Glenn’s historically been a reliable finisher, with 16 of his 22 wins actually coming by TKO/KO or Submission.
I don’t expect the books to get caught out by this, especially with Glenn currently being a -225 favourite at the time of writing…but I’ve got an eye on it. It’s a better play than backing Glenn’s moneyline, anyway.
How I line this fight: Ricky Glenn -275 (74%), Christos Giagos +275 (26%)
Bet or Pass: Interested in Glenn ITD, at around +175 or better.

Rani Yahya v Montel Jackson
Did you know that Montel Jackson has hands as big as Francis N’gannou!? I recommend you take a shot for every time it gets mentioned on broadcast, it’ll make the rest of the card more fun!
Jackson’s a -600 favourite here, which I think is a bit wide. In my opinion, Rani Yahya is one of the best pure grapplers we have ever seen in the UFC, and given Jackson usually does his best work with his wrestling, it could provide Yahya with the opportunity he needs to catch a submission. Jackson’s best path to victory would be to emulate Ricky Simon in his win over Yahya, where he essentially used a “floor is lava” approach and didn’t follow his takedowns down to the mat and relied on his striking. Regardless of Montel’s striking ability, it’s going to be head and shoulders above Yahya’s here.
Rani Yahya is now 38 years old, and he looks a fuck tonne older. He’s never been particularly athletic, but the loss of speed and dexterity is likely to cause him big problems in upcoming fights. It’s kind of a miracle that he’s 4-1-1 in his last six, but he’s not been particularly active so he’s probably a shell of the man he was in the first of those wins.
Jackson was a highly touted prospect a few years ago, but high level grappler Brett Johns kind of stole all of his hype when he beat him by decision. Montel’s got a massive cheat code in his size and ability to just maintain position with wrist control, but he’s not actually that good from a skill perspective. The issue is, Johns had to rely heavily on his wrestling to instigate his grappling success, and I just don’t see Yahya land the likely 3+ takedowns he’ll need on Jackson to actually settle him on his back and get his game going.
I see why Jackson is a huge favourite, but I don’t think you can really say there’s any meat left on the bone on his moneyline. The real interest is in where the books find line the distance totals, as Yahya is a liability on the feet and Jackson’s wrist control abilities make him good value for a TKO finish. Montel’s not really been a super prolific finisher in the UFC, but he’s landed 11 knockdowns in 9 appearances and has a less durable and physically inferior opponent in front of him this time.
I’d take Jackson ITD at +110 or better, Jackson KO at +160 or better, or Fight Does Not Go to Decision at -150 or better.
How I line this fight: Rani Yahya +500 (17%), Montel Jackson -500 (83%)

Batgerel Danaa v Brady Hiestand
Prior to his win most recently against Fernie Garcia, Brady Hiestand had not beaten a fighter with a registered win in professional MMA. That's fucking embarrassing and the fact the UFC brought him in for TUF is pretty mind-blowing. Doesn’t actually mean as much as people think it does though, I just wanted to highlight it because record-padding annoys me. I do however respect Hiestand for actually beating a 10-2 guy, and going to a split decision with Turcios in the TUF finale, considering he has little to no experience against competition that's not bottom of the barrel.
He faces Danaa Batgerel, who was looking like an interesting up and comer before losing two fights in three months and ruining all of his momentum. The Mongolian is just a bit too wild with his striking – he puts too much into every punch and the big swings make him a target for straight shots down the middle.
Batgerel’s loss to Chris Gutierrez was honestly just unlucky, as he was looking okay before a low % spinning back fist ended things. His loss to Kyung-Ho Kang, however, was a pretty bad look considering Kang has never really shown himself to be anything other than a grappler in his UFC tenure, but had a surprising amount of success by just employing his jab. Honestly after that performance I’d say any fighter with the standup skills and dedication to a gameplan could probably get the better of Batgerel…but Hiestand isn’t really that guy.
Unfortunately, Hiestand’s not got very good striking at all, and it’s obviously a means to an end for him to look to implement the wrestling. Hiestand is one of those scrambly wrestlers that does as much good as they do bad (think TJ Brown from last week). He’s great in a scramble but, once settled, he’s prone to make some low IQ move and end up on bottom…where he probably finds a way to scramble back to dominance. That’s basically what happened every 30 seconds of the 1st round against Fernie Garcia, before the latter gassed out under the intense pressure.
So, as is often the case in these kind of affairs – it likely comes down to how much success Hiestand can have with his wrestling/grappling. Given that we’ve only really seen Danaa face takedowns from Alatengheili back in 2019, (and his fellow Mongolian is actually a pretty high credentialed wrestler), I’d say the jury is still out on his takedown defence. It’s therefore very hard to really predict anything about this fight.

Mohammed Usman v Junior Tafa
It’s crazy to me that Junior and Justin Tafa fight in the same weigh class, as Junior has a very different frame comparison to his brother. At 4-0, I think the UFC have jumped the gun on bringing Junior in to the organisation, as he’s looked very, very green so far. I saw him going life and death with a 15-12-2 Kelvin Fitial (who was on a 4 fight losing streak to the likes of Ben Sosoli, Rakim Cleveland & Dominique Steele)…and it was just eight months ago. Tafa is only 26 so I suppose we can expect rapid improvements from him…but his takedown defence and general process does not look very good.
People on social media seem to have made up their minds about Mohammed Usman already. Of course he’s never going to come close to the accolades or ability of Kamaru, and the running joke is that each MMA “family” has a good one and a shit one…but he’s doing okay for a Heavyweight fighter so far! His wins on the Ultimate Fighter were far from impressive, and he’s kind of won 55-60% of most of the rounds he competed in…but he’s still going to be improving and getting the job done.
Junior Tafa has a kickboxing background and should clearly be the better striker here, but Usman’s got that death touch that seems to make his opponents freeze inside the cage. He knocked Zac Pauga out with a very non-commital left hook that looked like a range-finder more than anything. I just wish Usman wrestled a bit more, considering he does actually have a high-school background. He shot and landed the occasional takedown throughout TUF, but didn’t really ever establish top control.
I understand that, on paper, Junior Tafa should absolutely be the one winning this fight, but I just think it’s going to turn into a chaotic brawl when these two heavy hitters collide. Usman has more than enough power to win the fight in an instance and, at Heavyweight, that means the price must be kept honest. Furthermore, he’s also already fought on a UFC card before and will be less prone to jitters, and there’s also the very slight chance he comes out with a wrestling-based gameplan that could cause Tafa some problems.
Aaaaaand for fuck sake, I’ve written all of this and just seen that Usman has been absolutely steamed and the fight is now a pick’em. I was coming to the conclusion that Usman should be a slight underdog and that +180 was too wide…and the line moves to around a pick’em across the books within the span of an hour. I’ve never seen anything like that before, and I spend hours looking at MMA lines on a weekly basis.
I think the market has corrected itself and the new line is fairly accurate.
How I line this fight: Junior Tafa -125 (55%), Mohammed Usman +125 (45%)
