So, a lot of you aren't going to like this.
Those of you who work at agencies ESPECIALLY won't like this, because it's gonna make those of you who are lazy and blame everyone else for your problems...
Well it's gonna make you look like you're lazy, and blame everyone else for your problems.
So here's my central thesis for this post, done in my best Alec Baldwin impersonation:
"Facebook's not weak, YOU'RE weak!"
Okay, fair enough, Facebook is actually kinda shitty. But have you heard that old (admittedly misogynistic) joke, "Women, can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em?"
Well that describes FB.
I hate FB. I despise it with every fiber of my being.
But... it also makes me a lot of money. So I still run a lot of ads on there.
Quick note about me so you know I'm not some random dipshit: Been in online marketing for a long time, been running ads for about 5 years. Currently do about $5mm a year in spend, a decent chunk of it with my own personal cash for my own business. I still consult and run ads in JV/partnership deals, however, so not ALL my own money.
So, lots of posts lately about FB being shitty. Interestingly enough like many things there have always been these posts en masse. ios14 was a huge turning point in this industry. And it seems to keep getting worse and worse.
That said there's still people CRUSHING it on FB on a daily basis. Individuals who are doing 50k - 100k in spend a day (I've been one of them, right now more like 20k a day though.)
And these are direct response guys, not big ass brands who can afford to throw cash away.
So the question is... why are you struggling and they aren't?
Well first of all let me let you in on a secret: FB sucks for them too. It sucks for me, it sucks for all of us.
But if you want to be successful, you need to focus on what you CAN control, not what you can't.
So here's my rules for success:

1. UNDERSTAND FACEBOOK SUCKS

I've run five copies of the exact same ad in the same ad set at the same time and gotten wildly different results. That's why I test the way I do (Test images/videos and copy at the same time, so I can have duplicates of everything and cross reference/aggregate performance)
Also understand something that works in your market is half the battle... you need something FB likes too. Which you'll never know what it is until you stumble upon it.
Which brings me to my next point...

1. YOU'RE NOT TESTING ENOUGH

I've seen SO MANY posts where people are like, "We've tested TEN IMAGES and nothing works!!!"
My friend. 10 images is what I test in a day. I've been known to test 100 videos a week. I'll write ten pieces of copy for one day's testing.
Do I do this every day? No. I wish I could. I don't have the time/energy. But ideally I SHOULD be doing this every day.
Now if you're running a budget of $100/day obviously you have a lot less you can test.
But my point is... even for those of us who know what we're doing... it takes a LOT of creative testing to get a hit.
Creative testing should be 80% of your time on FB. The guys who tell you it's about the campaign structure or whatever... I mean yeah that stuff is important and can help. But if your creative is good you can kind of ignore that stuff and still get decent results.
Oh and every account is different in terms of what it likes. So you kind of have to treat them separately and test creatives on each. Have fun!

1. IF YOU'RE A MEDIA BUYER AND CAN'T UNDERSTAND CREATIVE YOU SHOULD GET A NEW JOB

Look, not everyone is a great copywriter, or video producer, or artist.
But any good media buyer should be able to take a guess at WHY the creative isn't working, and what should be changed. They should know how to test in a way that is getting these insights that can then be used to further iterate on and improve creatives.
I have met some media buyers who don't know shit about creative but are great at scaling. They're rare, but they're out there. Maybe 10 - 20% of great media buyers are like this. But these people could never fly solo. They only shine in a team with a big creative producing "engine". And they still know how to test to get that learning - they just don't really know why.

1. YOUR TESTING STRATEGY SUCKS

Tests are experiments. They should, as much as possible, isolate one variable.
So many times I hear about people testing in different campaigns, or on different days of the week, or whatever.
No. Testing is in one campaign. Usually different ad sets because otherwise FB will pick a favorite, but if I could throw all ads in one ad set and have FB evenly spend I'd do that.
Furthermore, you should have a very clear goal when you test. "We're testing angles." "We're testing whether red or blue gets a better CPC." "We're testing which of these 10 pieces of ad text does the best."
Don't just throw up a bunch of random videos. At least not often. Test one element. An intro. A CTA. Whatever. Have a plan, and stick to it.

1. WHAT AGENCIES TELL YOU IS BULLSHIT

And the worst part is then the people working there start to believe it.
A small incomplete sample of bullshit things I've heard:
"Facebook has to get out of the learning phase."
False. A good creative will work pretty much straight away. FB's pixel's been dogshit since ios14. Yes, generally training a pixel will help, but this "it needs 7 days of learning" horse shit is just that... horse shit. Often said by people who want to make excuses rather than get down and dirty and do the hard work - making good creatives.
"The pixel takes time to learn."
A half-truth, see above.
"It takes a month to even start getting data"
If I took a month to get data I'd be destitute. You should be able to test if a campaign is going to work in a week, assuming you have the creative ready to go.
If you can't figure out whether something's going to work in a week or two and 1 - 2k of spend, you suck at your job.
If you can't spend 1k a week, then you're working with a client that's super small and that has its own set of challenges, especially on FB.
And if an agency tells you they can't give you some damn good data and an action plan on exactly what you should do in a week or two, run from them and find someone else.
There are more that get my goat but you get the point.
BTW... MOST (not all) agencies work like this:
They sell you a ton of bullshit. You sign on as a client. They give you a junior they get from the Philippines or Eastern Europe for like $400 a month while charging you $3k. They give you endless excuses for months on why results aren't there until you finally leave but hey at that point they got like $15k in profit out of you... they don't care.
WHY I POSTED THIS:

1. Because there are people on here who believe this shit and waste time spinning their wheels when they could be getting traction
   
2. Because I hate lies and incompetence
   
3. Because I enjoy watching all the terrible media buyers come out of the wood work and try to argue with me on why I'm wrong (seriously, do it. Let's go. I need to procrastinate when I should be writing copy.)
   

And if you think I'm looking for clients... I'm not. I don't really have the time. Unless you want to do a profit share deal and your biz is already doing at least $1mm a year in revenue, then yeah, PM me, but it's gotta be a very attractive proposition for me to work on your shit.
Full disclosure: I am considering starting a YT channel where I basically get drunk and/or high and rant about shit like this for 5 - 10 minutes at a time. But as you know there's no money in that.
IN CONCLUSION:
Most of the shit you've heard is dead wrong and spread by people who either don't know any better or want to sell you this fantasy that ads are impossible. They're not. They're just a lot of hard fucking work.

Now stop being on reddit and go make some more creatives and write some more copy to test.

In 1995 Shelly, 32 and John Markley 36, had been married for 16 years. They had 5 children between the ages of 8-15 at this time. They were reportedly loving attentive parents with a big family that loved them. The family lived on Greenville Road in Bristolville Ohio in 1995.
The family had been through some extremely rough times in the early to mid 90's. In 1992 John's twin sister Bonnie was diagnosed with breast cancer. As twins and siblings in general can be the pair were extremely close. In 1993 their home was destroyed by fire. In 1994 John's father passed away as well as a nephew. During all of this Shelly and John were helping Bonnie in any way they could in her cancer battle. They had even raised 15,000 dollars for experimental treatment in Mexico. Despite all their efforts Bonnie passed away on December 13th 1995. John as imagined was absolutely devastated.
Just two day later the Markley children attended school seeing their parents that morning. Bonnie's funeral was scheduled for the next day, December 16th. When the children began to arrive home that afternoon on December 15th, they smelled a strange "burnt" odor as they came in the door. The front door was unlocked. The burnt odor turned out to be the coffee left scolding in the pot.
The couples 1990 silver Chevrolet truck was not in the driveway. A wristwatch that John was said to hardly ever take off was on a shelf above the stove. Shelly's cigarettes and case were sitting on the kitchen counter and she generally took them with her.
Upstairs they found their parents gun safe, which was normally locked left wide open. Because the children did not know how many guns their parents owned, they couldn't say what if any were missing. There was another safe left open and papers were scattered all around the floor as if someone was looking for something. There was a 1978 Corvette that John kept covered with two tarps constantly in the garage. Both tarps were also missing.
After a time when Shelly and John didn't come home on the 15th the children contacted an aunt and uncle who came and picked them up. When the couple had not reached out by the next day of the funeral police were contacted. A short time later ( a little unclear when the truck was discovered but sounds relatively soon after the disappearance and possibly on the 16th?). The Chevrolet was discovered parked in the parking lot of a store in Bristolville about 10 miles from their home.
The keys to the truck were missing. The Markley's cellphone was in the cab of the truck. In the bed of the truck was a "tire to a semi trailer truck". The two tarps that had vanished were also found in the truck bed. The truck, which John was said to keep meticulous, was uncharacteristically covered in mud.
The last clue of a sighting of the Markley's, 2 hours after their children saw them on the 15th of December is at 10:36 a.m. at the then Bank One in Bloomfield Ohio. The couple came to the bank's drive thru window to cash a check made out to Shelly for 1,000 dollars. The teller reported that John Markley was driving his Chevrolet during the transaction and his wife Shelly was sitting in between her husband and another man. This man was never identified and the teller could not remember enough to identify or describe the man later.
John and Shelly were never seen again. They never came home to the 5 children who they dearly loved, and who dearly loved them just 10 days before Christmas in 1995.
One more detail in this case was when the Markley's were missing a co-worker of John's had claimed to be holding the couple hostage for a 100,000 dollar ransom.
However authorities would ultimately claim the co-worker was just an opportunistic person and he most likely was not involved with their disappearance. He was charged with extortion. It is reported this co-worker was going around prior to the couple's vanishing stating the Markley's owed him 1,000 dollars. The same amount they withdrew the day they vanished.
This huge family of loved ones have many still around hoping that someday answers will come in what happened to Shelly and John. No suspects have been named, at least publicly by authorities. This case remains unsolved.

It had been a long time. A long while, indeed, since the hives were removed from Nostramo. In their place came the endless fields of corn, the unwavering sway of the stalks as they rose out of the land. Of course, any person who knew Nostramo knew that this world wasn't truly the Planet of Darkness; it simply shared a name by sheer coincidence. This world was bright, temperate, and fertile. No pollution clogged the rivers and skies, even as bulk machines designed for the sole purpose of moving unimaginable quantities of grain to and fro went about their business. Humanity had learned long ago that the sun was necessary for crops to flourish, so the expense to keep the world clean was made. Nostramo was a world of life. It had to be in order to survive.
Scarecrows, intended to thwart the predations of hungry birds, rose tall above even the crops. They, by themselves, were hardly effective. The birds were too wise to be frightened by inanimate sticks. What was effective, at least for this one tiny part of the world, was the plate the scarecrow had been adorned with. The armor was a faded sapphire, somewhere between the blues of an ocean and the blue of old Nostramo's skies. Yet, the plate was marred with the scars of time. The blue had been worn away by the passage of years with no protection from the elements, and cracks and crevices from battle were many and they were deep. The passage of centuries had only worsened them. Now, it hardly even resembled armor, despite its once-mastercrafted artifice. It was a shadow of its former self. Glory—if the ceramite plates ever truly knew glory—was long gone, now. Rivets that once held pieces of flayed skin and the bones of poor, unfortunate souls now rested happily empty.
There was also a house. It was a simple prefabricated hab unit, only sized up to accommodate a being far larger than any normal human. Time had worn it down, too, but the rockcrete remained strong even as the white paint that once gave it a dash of vibrancy had peeled away and left only a stone gray visage. The roof was little more than a slightly tilted set of squares, designed to remove rain while only necessitating the bare minimum of extra material. Some parts of the unit were splotched with yellow pollen, and an odd vine curled up the side, almost making the place appear rustic.
And a woman emerged. She was tall. Unnervingly so. Even with the enlarged door, she risked slamming her head into the doorframe if she did not exercise caution. Her black hair was tied into a simple braid, though it was long enough to reach the small of her back. Scars—deep ones—crowded the area around her mouth like unwanted guests. Her clothes were simple and unrefined; a plain gray tunic and an unimpressive skirt covered her from her neck to her ankles, leaving only her head and arms exposed. She wore boots underneath it all, but one could only cast small glimpses of them from between the hem of her skirt and the length of the grass she tread upon.
Kassandra Curze was a woman long forgotten. Once, she had been known as the Night Haunter. A long time ago, she had sought justice and enacted it in whichever way she saw fit. Once, she had been seen as a woman who no one could trust. She was a tool to be maintained, to be utilized and then discarded when the work was done. Not any longer. For all anyone knew, the Night Haunter was dead.
She had heard stories, of course, of the Galaxy beyond Nostramo. She knew of her sister Guilliman's return and the wars she fought, how the Avenging Daughter of the Imperium bloodied her hands to keep Mankind safe. Kassandra knew of this. She knew that men and women who called themselves her children died every day, trying to enact the will of a Primarch they believed long dead. Her will.
"Redeem us," she had said. "Protect Mankind."
She sighed as the memories rushed back into her. Yet, despite the pain of those recollections, she spared a half-smile. If she was looking back, it meant she was not looking forward. She had not had a vision in millennia. It was one of many blessings she believed she did not deserve. Yet, she took them, fearing the alternative. Better to bask in rewards unearned than to be soaked in the just punishments. Truthfully, she feared justice. She had no delusions against the reality that, if anyone deserved to be burnt alive or hanged from a rope, it was her.
Yet she still lived. She lived here, by sheer coincidence, on a planet called Nostramo that was not Nostramo. She tended to crops. She repaired bulk movers and operated servo-harvesters. She could predict what the weather in three weeks was going to look like just by smelling the air. Her crops contributed to the war efforts, and she made her contribution to the tithe. She had been doing that for thousands of years. Surely, she had done more for the Imperium than most women could do. Surely she had earned some small piece of redemption, just by staying still and not hurting anyone. Just by eating and drinking alone, without anybody to injure or torture with her presence.
As she made her way toward the field, she whispered to herself, "The Night Haunter is dead."
The stalks were tall enough that they would have surpassed even an armored space marine in height, but she stood a head taller than them. If she looked out while standing in the field, she could see the horizons in all directions, with only a few odd hab units breaking up the perfect solitude of the endless sea of grain. Birds who made their nests amidst the fields swooped around. There were cats who lived in the fields, Kassandra knew. They were put there to hunt the birds, who ate both the crops and the insects who lived on them. She had always wanted to touch one of them, but they refused to draw near, even at the promise of food.
She slipped through the fields with the grace of a butterfly and began to examine the crops. The ones in section 1-A were in good condition. 1-B was struggling with a stalkbeetle infestation. She would have to requistion some pesticide. 1-C was good. 1-D flourished. 1-E was beautiful. She kept going through the sections of her field, scanning for any possible variance, any discrepancy that she needed to be concerned about. The administratum believed that there was a team of ten workers living in her hab unit. They were wrong, but she could do the work of ten men and then still have time left in the day to do other things.
When she finished the final section assigned to her, she departed from the field. She went home. She sat in her empty bedroom (if an empty chamber could be called that) and meditated. She could always feel the pricks of the future gnawing at her mind, trying to force their way in, but something stopped them. Even as her subconscious tried to skim the threads of time, it refused to delve into the deeper waters. Even if she tried to see something, she could not. Her foresight had left her.
Meditation was not something that had come naturally for her. She was once a being who was so utterly lost in her own torment that the idea of any self-reflection physically pained her. When she first struggled with those memories, the attacks had come. Moments where she could not breathe, even though there was air and her superhuman physique should have meant she could have survived even in the vacuum of space. Moments where she felt so small and vulnerable, despite her giant frame and overwhelming strength. Her heart racing even faster than it did in battle because when she was fighting she was in control of herself. When she fought the beast in her mind, she was not in control.
But that hurdle, though it had taken centuries to overcome, was simply an obstacle, and there was no task one of the Emperor's Daughters could not complete. Not that she took any pride in being related to the Emperor, of course; she simply saw the reality.
She opened her eyes. As her mind returned to the sensations of the world, she whispered to herself, "The Night Haunter is dead."
She left her bedroom and went to the kitchen. This was the one luxury she afforded herself, to honor the one person who had ever taken the time to know her. They had loved to bake, so she learned as well. Anyone, given thousands of years with which to practice, would become skilled in any craft.
Soon, the smell of freshly-baked pies and bread wafted out of her open windows. There was no one to smell them, and no one to share them with. She ate alone. Loaves of bread, fruit pies, chocolate tarts, and jams and butters with which to garnish them were all devoured quickly. She could taste every last flavor, could perfect every single modicum of sweetness until it practically melted away in a cloud of bliss, but she never enjoyed this part. It reminded her of all the things she did not have, and then she disliked herself for wanting more mercies than she had already been granted.
Then, when she was done eating and the sun was set, she went to sleep on the floor. Then she woke up the next day.
And she did it all again. Over and over again, without fail, without the slightest instance of change. It was peaceful.
A knock came on her door while she was baking. They called her name, not the false name the governor's inspectors knew her by. It was a woman's voice, boisterous and grizzled. Instantly, she knew who the voice belonged to: Leona El'Jonson. There were other women who sounded like that, but none could match the timbre of the Lion. Kassandra knew it as though the sound were engraved into her very soul.
She pulled a knife from the cabinet. For a normal human, it would have been the size of a longsword.
She whispered to herself as she approached the door slowly, "The Night Haunter is dead."
The door opened, and she saw the Primarch of the First Legion. She was wearing her armor. She was unarmed, however, and she looked... older. Her once pristine blonde hair was flecked with gray. The shadows of wrinkles pulled at her features, like a normal woman in her late thirties. And the steel daggers her eyes once held weren't there. Her face was almost... soft.
"Curze," the Lion said. Her voice, at least, hadn't changed.
"El'Jonson," Kassandra responded.
The sisters looked at each other. Kassandra realized with a chill that the Lion looked awkward. There was no certainty in the woman's eyes. Not like there had been during the Heresy or the Scouring. Not like there had been during the Great Crusade.
Was this really Leona El'Jonson?
"You look different," the Lion commented. "Much calmer. Peaceful."
Kassandra just stared. Surely, the knife in her hand—she had it hidden behind the doorframe—had not escaped her sister's notice. The Lion knew it was there, right?
Then, as the Lion's eyes burrowed into her own, she understood that yes, she did know. What was she thinking? Leona El'Jonson was never a deceitful woman. She had never once told a lie, and her coming to this house unarmed meant she had no intention of causing a ruckus. At least, not yet.
It meant she was vulnerable. Kassandra could get rid of her now. She could plunge the knife into the 1st's throat and no one would ever know. She knew, without her even saying, why she was here. She wanted to bring her back. She wanted her to fight. She wanted her to be at the head of the Night Lords again, to fight against the enemies of the Imperium like she had ten millennia ago. One simple murder would end this before it even began. First it was the Lion, then it would be Guilliman. Then it would be Dorn, maybe, or Corax. Maybe even Aurelia would come down and beg her to turn coat.
No. No more.
Kassandra's brow furrowed in agitation. "I'm staying here. The Night Haunter is dead."
The Lion looked back at her with a thoughtful expression on her face. She pinched the bridge of her nose anxiously—a new habit; perhaps she picked it up from Guilliman—and asked, "May I come in?"
She wanted to say no. More than anything, she wanted to say no. But she smelled the peanut butter pie from the kitchen that she knew she would normally have eaten by herself and something cracked. Something poked at her eyes, then. It was an unfamiliar feeling, one that she hadn't experienced in millennia. She kept her face even, but her mouth betrayed her: "Yes," she answered.
She guided the Lion into the kitchen and stabbed the knife into the cutting board—a warning—then she pulled out a chair for her sister to sit in. The table was far larger than a woman living alone needed. Thirty-seven chairs, all evenly spaced, rested in a perfect circle around the table. Pies and loaves of bread adorned it like decorations, despite their smell. These details did not escape the Lion's notice as she sat down. "I did not take you for the sentimental type, Curze."
"I am not," Kassandra responded. She pulled another set of pies out of the oven—lemon—and moved them to the table.
The Lion spared one last gaze at the expansive table and the feast that had been laid out before her and chanced a sad smile. "No. No, you're not."
Kassandra handed her sister a plate, a knife, a spoon, and a fork, then sat down. She pulled a slice of apple pie onto her plate, then slapped a dollop of ice cream onto it. She then grabbed one of the seasoned loaves of bread and set it down next to her plate. "Eat," she said. "They're better fresh."
There was discomfort in the way the Lion picked items to add to her plate. She placed a cinnamon roll in front of her, took small bites of it until it was gone, then quietly grabbed another. The sisters, for a time, ate in silence.
Almost, Kassandra wished the Lion would just eat her sweets and leave. She hoped El'Jonson would get the picture: Kassandra Curze was a new woman, living a life that she wanted, not the one that had been forced onto her. But, of course, she had to ask. "Why are you here, El'Jonson?"
The response came quickly. The Lion seemed to ease up, the territory becoming more familiar than sitting quietly and eating sweets. "I came to fetch you."
Kassandra set her fork down with a distinct clink. She stood and pulled a jar of strawberry jam from her cabinet. "Would you like some?"
Anger began to spread across the Lion's face. "You mock me."
"What if I do? What are you going to do about it, El'Jonson? Are you going to send your Angels here to destroy my crops and raze my home to the ground? Such measures are not beneath you." Kassandra's tone was even and controlled. Her heart, however, began to race. Thoughts began to swarm her, too many to control. What if she were persuaded? What if the Lion forces her? What if she destroys her new Nostramo just to get her to leave? What if she already informed her Legion, and her children are on their way to take her back to the wars?
She turned back to the cabinet to put the jam away.
"The Imperium is dying, Curze. It is split asunder. I've yet to even see Guilliman, but she and I are the only ones left, aside from you."
"What?" Kassandra wheeled around to face her sister. She looked for some semblance of dishonesty in the Lion's face, but there was none. She told the truth. "Only us three remain?"
"All the others are dead or missing. Even Aurelia has disappeared, gone in pursuit of Little Light. There is no one left to fight."
"Even Sanguinia?"
"I'm told she has not left Baal since her Dove died during the Siege of Terra." The Lion looked weary for a moment. "I'm sorry, Curze. I wish our reunion could have been done under better circumstances, but-"
"Better circumstances?"
The Lion looked shocked, both by the sentiment that had come out of her own mouth and by the venom with which Kassandra had spewed her reply. Her body tensed, preparing for a fight.
"For ten thousand years, I have tended to this farm. I have not harmed a soul in all that time. I have done my duty as a citizen of the Imperium. I have done everything in my power to make sure that my sins are wiped away, and all you do to wipe away my grievances with you are some honeyed words of apology for bothering me? Odd for you, granted, but no less unwanted. Perhaps I should have turned coat with Aurelia when I had the chance. Then, at least, my wishes would be treated with some respect."
The Lion, taken aback, sighed. "Kassandra." She stood and moved around the table toward Kassandra, doing her best to make the motion seem gentle. She wanted to appear kind. "I made mistakes. Too many to count. I hurt my children, I hurt my loved one, and I hurt you. I see that now. Every day, I wish I had not."
Kassandra watched as tears slipped down Leona El'Jonson's face. She watched as the stone slab of a woman began to cry. Wetness made lines down the 1st Primarch's face, leaving stains that would take hours to leave her skin. Even as she cried, however, her face remained still.
The shock manifested in half-spoken words. "Leona, what are you-"
"I know I have no right to come down to your home and ask you to take up your sword again. I know you have found a measure of peace here. Believe me when I say I do not want to destroy that. To destroy this." She motioned to the sweets arrayed on the table. This was the closest thing the sisters had ever been to being a family. Suddenly, Kassandra knew that Leona understood. "This is what all of us have been fighting for all of this time. A chance to be together. We might not have said it, but that is what really caused all of this. Our chance to be a family has passed us by, but we can stop others from feeling that pain. The Imperium is made up of daughters and sons. Of mothers and fathers. Of brothers and sisters. I fight to protect them, Curze, and so do your children."
Finally, something to pick at. "You lie. The Night Lords would never-"
"The VIIIth has changed. They have taken your words to heart, Kassandra."
"What are you talking about?"
Leona reminded her of words that she had not heard for millennia. "Protect Mankind. That is what you told them, isn't it? All this time, they have followed the words of their Primarch."
"You... You're lying. That Legion of madmen would never listen to me. It's impossible. El'Jonson, you are lying to me!"
"I am not."
"You are. You've come to take me back to them. They want me to lead them, to be the lunatic that leads their merry band of insane scum. I refuse. I refuse to play that role again. The Night Haunter is dead! She is dead!"
"Kassandra Curze!"
The shout stopped Kassandra. She turned away from Leona and looked into the empty sink, seeing her reflection in the metal basin. "The Night Haunter is dead."
"I do not want the Night Haunter. I want you, Kassandra. But we must go soon. Beyond Nostramo, the Galaxy burns. It needs you."
As she stared into the basin, Kassandra had a vision. She watched as she gazed into the eyes of Leona, with the 1st plunging knife into her throat. The knife currently resting in her cutting board. She watched, with cloudy eyes, as she squirmed and fought only to be overpowered by her armored sister. The 1st came here to kill her. She is a traitor.
She reached for the knife.
For a brief moment, she felt something touch her hand. It was a feeling she had not felt in a long time. She smelled the sweets on the table. She listened to the swaying of the fields outside. She felt her own breath, moving in and out gently. She looked at her sister, stern as ever. She heard a voice. Stop, my love, it said. I am here. I will keep you safe.
She stopped herself from replying. She knew it was just a trick of the mind. It was a hallucination to be ignored. Her lover was dead.
Leona came over and grabbed her. At some point, Kassandra had fallen to the ground. She had her arms wrapped around her, squeezing her tightly. What was she doing? Was she trying to suffocate her? Was this an attempted murder?
Then the memories. The flashes of warmth, of love. The brief moments of respite amidst the sea of pain. She remembered her love, and how they used to hold her. How they used to hug her, to embrace her with their little arms and somehow make her feel like she wasn't the worst woman in the universe. She felt Leona holding her tightly, securely, like she was afraid to let go, and she felt that again.
And, for the first time in ten thousand years, Kassanadra Curze cried.
As she cried, she had another vision.
There was a house. It was a simple prefabricated hab unit, only sized up to accommodate beings far larger than any normal human, but also large enough to hold a lot of people. There was a fresh coat of white paint on the outside, and inside there were many rooms. There was a bedroom with a large bed fit for a Primarch and her lover. There was a nursery painted dark blue, like the midnight sky hanging over Nostramo. There was a kitchen, where Kassandra was hard at work making pie and bread and other baked goods. There was the sound of happy mingling coming from the dining room, where the table was already stacked full with food. And, filling all of the chairs, were her family. Smiling. Happy. Together.
And her belly was swollen with the light of new life. And as she carried the last pie into the dining room, she felt the warm gazes of her sisters, of their spouses, of her father, and of her love, and she smiled.
Then she was back in reality. She looked at Leona.
"This dream that I have," she said. "Is it worth fighting for?"
Leona placed her forehead against Kassandra's. "If even Kassandra Curze can have hope, then Humanity's dream is not yet dead." She pulled away, "But to reach that, we must fight."
Kassandra looked out her window. She saw her old armor hanging on the scarecrow, as beat up as it was. "Tell me," she began, "where is my Legion?"

Music has always been a constant in my daily life. I stream on my way to work, I jam to vinyl records at home, I bang my head at shows and festivals on both coasts of the US. The evidence for my interest doesn’t need to be stated…. But I have OCD. The 1% rules the land. Behold, confidence be held in contempt; all theories are fair game. The apparent is no match for doubt.
Could it all be a lie? Could I be forcing myself to follow music because I have nothing better to stand in it’s place? Am I just following the all too familiar road? These are some of the generalities that preceed me in my register of self inquiry.
“YOU’RE NOT FOCUSING ENOUGH ON THE BAND ON STAGE””. “Okay, let the thought be”. “I’M HAVING TOO MANY UNRELATED THOUGHTS TO THE BAND ON STAGE. DOES THIS MEAN THAT I DON’T LIKE THE BAND? AM I ACTUALLY ENJOYING MYSELF?”. “Jesus, I don’t know. I’m not gunna figure out an answer with a nag like that on my shoulders”…. On a more specific leaf, I present an internal conversation while doing what I love; going to shows.
I went through treatment with therapists who combined elements of ERP/CBT/and ACT. I’m forever thankful for their assistance in my recovery. They taught me the skills to live with my disorder. But some topics are just so fucking sticky. We were never able to resolve my music related obsessions. I hold no malice however. Music has historically been everything to me. I wouldn’t expect obsessions on that subject to be abruptly curable.
So much left to fate. I have no idea if I’m managing myself in accordance with my principals; my belief on how to handle the conversations with OCD. Is my suffering just eternal? Should I invest in a permanent residence to home this obsession?
The most blood seething trait of it all… I know it’s a bunch of old pieces of notebook paper, wrapped in dog shit. None of it is worth my energy or even nomination. But 2 + 2 is 4, Joe Biden is the president, and my brain is prone to rumination. Is our existence a tragedy we just smirk at for survival?

Why do Tech's last words pack an even bigger punch than just being his last words? Because this is the first and only time Tech doesn't follow Hunter's orders.

(Spoilers for Earwig obv but you shouldn't care because it's bad and don't watch it)
So for the past two months I've been watching every single Studio Ghibli movie. The only ones I had seen before this marathon were Spirited Away and Grave of the Fireflies, and as a fan of animation I felt like I owed it to myself to watch them. Sure enough, it was a great experience. Some were weaker than others, but the studio has an extraordinary batting average given that they've been making movies for about three decades now, and even their so-called "lesser" films were still competently made and worthwhile in their own right.
With one notable exception: Earwig and the Witch. And I want to talk about it because the way it fails is... interesting.
If you know one thing about this movie, it's the fact that unlike every Ghibli movie before it, it's infamously not animated in 2D. Instead, it's all in CG. And it's super obvious that the studio is completely out of their comfort zone, because the CG is, to put it lightly, not good. It's stiff, plasticky, it lacks shading, the characters are bland and inexpressive, and the few times they do show expression, it's jarring and uncanny. The liveliness of their previous movies is absent, and it substantially impacts the movie's quality. Gone is the immersion that renders the likes of Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and other works. It really underscores how dependent the studio is on their production values. While most Ghibli movies have decent plots, it's really the artistry behind their soundtracks, landscapes, and worldbuilding that gives their work its signature magic. Without that, what exactly are we left with?
I knew about the animation going in, and I tried divorcing the movie's narrative from its animation to see if there was anything salvageable. Sadly, it's also very troubled, but in a way that both feels weirdly Ghibli and doesn't, like a foreign studio trying to make a bootleg Ghibli movie. To give a rundown of the basic plot, it's about an orphan girl abandoned by her mom as a baby with a mixtape titled "Earwig". She's presented as a huge manipulative brat who has the orphanage under her thumb. She gets adopted by this witch who asks her to do a bunch of chores in her weird fucked up house, and is also married to this mysterious, angry dude who disappears for most of the day. Over the course of the film, the girl tries getting the upper hand on the witch by learning more of her magic. She meets this talking black cat (gee, what other Ghibli movie has a talking black cat?) who helps her. Cue shenanigans. Over time she learns more about this angry dude: that he's an artist, and that he was in a band before. The "climax" of the movie reveals that the witch and the angry dude were once in a band with someone else, one that happened to record the mixtape the girl has (and plays throughout the movie), but they broke up for cryptic reasons. This someone else, of course, is the girl's mom. Cue timeskip when it's revealed the girl has pretty much enslaved her two caregivers off-screen much like she did the orphanage. Then the movie decides it needs to end, so the mother returns and... it ends on that cliffhanger. Really.
A lot of their movies are super slice-of-life and don't follow a concrete plot like the traditional animated movie, which is one of the traits that drew me in. Movies like My Neighbor Totoro, Up on Poppy Hill, and Only Yesterday don't really have a high stakes plot, and while I can see some people not vibing with that, I felt like they could still pull their weight precisely because they craft a lot of atmosphere and charm that make us invested in the characters' stakes no matter how seemingly minor they are. The characters feel human and their vibes are just that strong. Moreover, the storytelling in Ghibli movies is often intentionally vague. It makes extensive use of metaphor and relies on the viewers to connect the dots and fill in the missing blanks. This quality is most apparent in Miyazaki's films (Howl's Moving Castle, The Wind Rises), eschewing the structure and exposition that's normally common in animated movies.
On paper, Earwig has both of these things. It's a slice of life story about a trickster girl trying to cope with living under strict caregivers after being spoiled her whole life. We're given bits and pieces about the lives of these characters, even the antagonistic caregivers who are shown to be more complex than they initially appear, but we're denied a clear-cut "answer" as to why they behave the way they do. The storytelling approach strives to be open-ended in the same vein as previous Ghibli movies, and it's also focused on the characters as opposed to the stakes. The world it tries building is very small, but there's still an effort to make it feel a bit real. Almost the entire film takes place in it after all. There's even flourishes to help it stand out, like a somewhat greater focus on musical elements than they've ever gone for.
So what went wrong here? Well, there's the animation obviously. Any attempt to build a sense of style or charm is immediately undercut by the really bad animation. It can't even hide behind the charm that other Ghibli films take for granted. The other reason those other movies worked but this one doesn't is because they have character arcs. Kiki's Delivery Service is about a witch girl who has to deal with the hurdles of living on her own, and over the course of the movie she struggles with keeping herself afloat in an unforgiving business, experiencing burnout in the process she can only overcome through support from other people. Howl's Moving Castle has the titular character go from being a recluse in a walking junk heap constantly trying to escape from others and getting slowly consumed by war to finding someone he can actually commit to. I could go on all day, but there's a clear intent behind the characters that also corresponds with the underlying message and themes (Miyazaki-wise, almost laser focused on war and environmentalism).
Earwig lacks any of this, because in the end there isn't really a greater purpose for any of the elements in the narrative. The main character doesn't have an arc, she remains completely stagnant and while her unlikability is sometimes amusing it doesn't serve any purpose. The caregivers are shown have been in a band but that's it, these themes aren't really explored in any greater detail. Off the top of my head it feels like there's a lot of potential angles the movie could've taken, because there are some interesting undertones that could be ran with. Maybe the movie could've explored the couple's lives more, how they went from having ambitions as part of a band to settling down as an eccentric couple living in a hovel. That could itself lead to a commentary on the ephemeral nature of fame. Or it could be about the MC learning not to be a manipulative brat, or maybe the value of hard work. Instead, it just... ends. It makes the movie feel very pointless. The classic Ghibli-style indirectness doesn't pay off and comes across less as intentional and more like bad writing... which it is. Ultimately, it's biggest flaw is that it's just very boring. The story spins its wheels so much that it's impossible to be invested in most of it, since it follows a repetitive pattern of "girl does something, she fucks up, witch or demon man get mad at her, she tries getting the upper hand, etc". It lacks the rhythm and pacing of, again, Kiki's Delivery Service or Only Yesterday, which do have a slow build-up towards something involving their characters. Whatever direction it does appear to be headed in is squandered, and because its animation is so damn janky, it's hard to luxuriate in it. Not that being 2D would save it to begin with anyways.
So that's why I decided to write this rant. If Earwig was bad in the way the average Illumination film is bad, it wouldn't be interesting, but what's fascinating is how it does try to be a Ghibli movie at its core, but its failures are more or less a botched version of their formula. And maybe the reason it stings is because it stands on the shoulders of giants. There's expectations imposed on it that wouldn't be on most other movies, and it doesn't live up to it. In the end, it's a mediocre kids movie with some redeeming traits, but with what Ghibli has been capable of, it's easy to imagine how it could've been better if it had more rewrites. It really begs the question of what went wrong during production, if their uneasy entry into the CG world would inevitably lead to a subpar product because they focused way more on whether they could instead of whether they should. It might be a microcosm for Goro's entire career as a whole. He's Miyazaki's son, he directed this movie, and he naturally takes a lot of influence from his dad. This isn't the only movie he's directed that's been panned (there's Earthsea, but I actually quite like that one; that's another rant on its own), but it's the one that's been panned the hardest. That's why I can't hate this movie, muvh as I think it's bad. It tried so hard, and got so far, but in the end... it didn't even matter.
tl;dr Earwig sucks because it has bad animation and tries doing what other Ghibli movies expertly did but does it very poorly.

Hello!! I posted a bunch of questions earlier, but I'm rereading HtN currently (have read the whole series) and remembered one of my biggest points of confusion.
The chain of events is: Harrow becomes a partial Lyctor. She gets taken onto Jod's ship. Shortly after that she performs her lobotomy. I assume that this involves replacing memories of Gideon with something else. So that when she wakes up, she can say, "Ah yes, I recall my time at Canaan House and how I became a Lyctor. What a lovely adventure that was." Then the book starts after she wakes up, and whenever she goes to sleep she enters the River and creates a bubble and pulls in all the ghosts, who then help her realize what's going on.
My question is, what were the false memories she put in her head to replace Gideon? It took me a while to wrap my head around the fact that the bubble was different from that, as the events in the bubble are happening in real time with the rest of the story. (Right?) Certainly past Harrow would not have just left a gaping hole in her mind, she has to feel like she knows that she's a Lyctor. And the bubble events can't be what she actually remembers because by the end she knows the truth.
The answer is probably "we don't know" but I'm dying to know how she explained away everything that happened (especially since everything was SO changed). It struck me that bubble!Harrow seemed so much like...nicer? than she was in GtN. She got pulled into way more conversations and corroborations with the other people whereas she barely spoke to anyone in the real version of events.
Also I'm confused about Ortus - his ghost was his true self, so he wrote The Noniad in real life, right? So did Harrow actually know it as well as she did in real life? It's so funny if true, again because of how she's portrayed by Gideon initially. (I actually was surprised by the cover of HtN because Harrow was always described as so horribly ugly but I thought she looked very normal.)
So ultimately I'm trying to figure out what bits of those bubble scenes came from real memories, false memories, and the bubble performance. Curious to know your thoughts!

The diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD) is predicated upon the notion that those who suffer from it have aspects of their personalities which are problematic, self-defeating and dysfunctional so, in the first instance, it is useful to explain what is meant by personality.
In fact, there are several theories which attempt to describe what personality is rather than one, definitive theory and one of the best-known theories is called the five-factor model of personality.
The 5 factor model of personality proposes that personality comprises 5 main factors/traits/characteristics, represented by the acronym OCEAN.
These 5 factors are shown and elucidated upon below :
Openness To Experience (inventive/curious versus consistent / cautious). Conscientiousness (efficient/organized versus easy-going / careless). Extraversion (outgoing/energetic versus solitary/reserved). Agreeableness (friendly/compassionate versus challenging/detached). Stability/Neuroticism (sensitive/nervous versus secure/confident).
Because, as already stated, a diagnosis of BPD is based on the idea that aspects of the diagnosed person's personality are disturbed we would expect there to be some relationship between this model of personality and the personalities of those suffering from BPD.
In relation to this, researchers have posed the question: to what degree can a diagnosis of BPD be predicted from a description of a person's personality based upon the 5-factor model?
One study (Distel et al., 2009) that sought to answer this question, involving over 10,000 participants in total, found that, in terms of the 5-factor model, the traits that best predicted BPD were :
High Neuroticism combined with Low Conscientiousness
Another study (Kendler et al., 2011) came up with similar results, finding that the three factors which correlated most highly with BPD were :
High Neuroticism Low Conscientiousness Low Agreeableness
A third study (Terr, 1991) found that individuals who had suffered significant childhood trauma (extremely common among BPD sufferers) scored more highly than controls on :
Neuroticism Openness to new experience.
Research carried out by Gutierrez et al. (2000) suggested that seven fundamental aspects of personality that, when they become disturbed, dysfunctional and maladaptive (e.g. due to childhood trauma), make up the foundations on which personality disorders may develop. (though, of course, to be diagnosed with any one particular personality disorder not all seven aspects of personality need to be functionally impaired. However, which of the seven aspects are impaired, and in which combinations, will contribute to the determination of the particular personality disorder).
Antagonism Compulsivity Detachment Disinhibition Negative affect Psychoticism Submissiveness
The above is of particular interest as there is a growing feeling within certain sectors of the medical profession that, rather than labelling people with potentially stigmatizing labels (such as borderline personality disorder) it may be better from a patient's point for the therapist to describe his/her difficulties with reference to the above seven personality aspects. This also has the benefit of providing the patient with specific personality traits and behaviours that s/he may benefit from working on and giving him/her greater insight into the source of his/her difficulties.
Studies suggest there is a genetic component that contributes to an individual's chances of developing BPD during adulthood. This, in turn, suggests (but does not prove) that certain behavioural aspects/traits of BPD may well have been adaptive for our ancestors (i.e. helped them to cope with their environment, to survive, and, ultimately, therefore, to reproduce in certain situations). Let's look at examples of why this may have been the case.
EXAMPLE 1: SOCIAL AVOIDANCE:
One aspect of personality pathology can be social avoidance e.g socially avoidant personality disorder and BPD (during phases of withdrawal) This trait could have helped our ancestors survive if they lived in an environment in which there existed many dangerous strangers.
EXAMPLE 2: IMPULSIVE BEHAVIOUR:
Many individuals suffering from BPD are highly impulsive. If a person is impulsive, it means s/he tends to react very quickly to an array of stimuli. Thus, in environments in which danger could suddenly come out of nowhere (like being unexpectedly attacked by a predator), lighting fast reactions would help to increase the individual's chances of survival.
EXAMPLE 3: AGGRESSION
One main symptom of BPD is a propensity to fly into intense rages and become (usually verbally) aggressive. Again, for our ancestors, aggression helped them to survive and reproduce. Indeed, violence was necessary as there was no police force to protect people and food and resources could sometimes only be gained by the means of fighting. Even during the last century, anthropologists studied a tribe of very violent hunter-gatherers and found that those who had committed homicide lived longer and reproduced more than less violent members of the tribe.
It stands to reason that individuals who both inherit traits relevant to BPD AND grow up in a dysfunctional environment (constituting a ''double-whammy) are at especially increased risk of developing BPD compared to both those who inherit similar traits but experience a stable and loving childhood and those who do not inherit BPD-related traits but experience a traumatic and stressful childhood.
It follows, of course, that if a parent has BPD, the child is at significantly increased risk of developing BPD him/herself as s/he may both inherit predisposing personality traits and grow up in a harmful environment.

His profile said he was 28. He didn’t want to send me selfies and said it’s because he works a high profile job (red flag). He was charming though and said he’d come to me and If I didn’t like what I saw he’d leave. He was looking for a trans girlfriend with heavy emphasis on a 24/7 dom/sub kink dynamic which I was very interested in exploring.
For months we met at his condo. I called him, he tried to gaslight me, saying that I had messaged his “sister” and that I was fucking insane, to never contact him or his family. By the time he hung up, she deleted her facebook. I have no idea what story he must’ve spun to hide his affair and get her to do that. He blocked me on everything.
I called him about a billion times but eventually I gave up looking for answers. The nature of our dynamic and the way he “trained” me through my transition, I literally did not know who I was without him, his praise, his affection. I was so lost and he knew much more about this than I did, I really jumped in young. I couldn’t work, I went from making 5 digits a month to missing rent payments.
I decided to get back on the same app I had met him on, after months of getting over it, to try to move on. Immediately got a message, from him. He told me he’d never meet anybody like me again, and that nobody was supposed to get hurt, that I was made for him, and that I didn’t know anything about his situation. I totally sank right back to subspace. I NEEDED to hear that so desperately. He assured to me he wasn’t with her & was manipulative enough to make me believe it. He gaslit me and I gaslit myself into believing I just made it up. I wanted it to be true .
More months go by and I try to cut contact a few times but he ropes me back in with “you were made for me”, “stop trying to run away because you’ll always come back to your owner”. I folded every time.
So now, almost a year after finding out about the “wife”, I still talk to him frequently. We sext often. We haven’t seen each other physically in a couple months but we plan to, and anytime there’s a 5% chance, I’m ready from toe to top. Talk of his personal life is cryptic at best. Last time I heard from him was 2 weeks ago now, he messaged me drunk while I myself was drunk and that’s when it all came out.
He told me he loved me, that he was with her for the kid and needed her to move in so he could be active in his kid’s life every single day, instead of splitting custody. That he had to pretend to want to be with her and start a family. That he felt trapped, and dreams of the life we could still have in the future. That he has cameras installed all through his apartment incase she tries to take him to court when he ends it. He said ultimately he will and has always loved me and one day hopes to rekindle what we had. We stayed up talking till 6am. It was like once he said he loved me (which hasn’t happened since the breakup) he COULD NOT stop saying it. Cloud 9 honestly.
Briefly I was relieved, but the next day he went right back to the storyline that he didn’t live with her, I misinterpreted and jumped to conclusions.
I was 19 when we met, and he was 36. He never intended to truly date me out of shame for his bisexuality, but I didn’t get the luxury of knowing that like he did and we talked like it would get there. He got me to start an Onlyfans, which I now realize HUGELY hinders my ability to work most stable jobs in the future and SEVERELY shrinks my already tiny dating pool as a trans woman. He’s totally wrecked my trust in men, my perception of the kink community, my hopeful optimism and given me serious issues I’ll probably carry for life. Part of me feels like I was groomed. I definitely feel like our dom/sub dynamic has tainted my perception, maybe permanently. I still do love him, but I hate him for what he did to me.
She’s so oblivious and probably just as brainwashed as I was. If his story (abuse allegations, loving me) is true, I understand but can’t forgive him. What I can’t understand is why he would keep me around through it all - 10/10 sex but 10/10 risk to his livelihood, his family, his son, his religious family & siblings. Why if not, that he loved me?
He DESERVES to lose her 100% but I can’t excerise payback as much as I wish I could. It would completely ruin his life.

As in, a ‘new’ Nintendo franchise where they put in their characters together, separate from the Smash Bros franchise?
 
I apologize if this conversation happened before and if this becomes a whole lot of nothing. It’s just something that I’ve contemplated about in terms of where Smash Bros will go from here.
 
As we see in Smash Bros Ultimate, the roster has now gotten huge. And I can imagine trying to write a story mode to the caliber of Subspace, would have been difficult. They would have to balance out the characters, their placements, the screen time, the logistics of who goes with who, the storylines, etc. There's a lot, and I imagine Subspace was not an easy first draft .
 
Not to mention, the third-party characters involved. I don’t know what goes on in terms of licensing, stipulations, and/or any set requirements regarding third-party characters being used on a Nintendo exclusive. But I have to imagine it can get complicated, like the case of how long it took to get Sora from Kingdom Hearts.
 
If they try another Subspace story mode, would they take out the third-party characters altogether or keep them very minimal? Again, I don’t know what the specific terms are like with using third-party characters for gaming. But part of me is thinking back to the movie: “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”, there were a lot of stipulations to how those characters must be portrayed in order to be in that movie.
 
And also thinking, how many players would be dissatisfied at limiting the third-party characters from Smash Bros. Whether it's the story mode or just cutting the roster for the next Smash game. You can’t please everyone in this type of situation.
 
So, it made me think: What if Nintendo made a new crossover title separate from Smash Bros?
Smash Bros. can be focused on being a platform fighter with Nintendo and Third-Party franchises with a few game modes.
 
And this hypothetical second title, can be a celebratory game focusing on Nintendo’s characters. What that game will be is honestly up in the air because there is no right answer to that.
 
But by doing this, I think it would be more flexible in terms of creating another Subspace experience with just Nintendo’s characters. There would be no potential hassle dealing with any possible complications of third-party stipulations, and also having more control on who can appear and be playable.
 
Nintendo isn’t afraid to try different things and experiment, they always put out a wildcard game amid their releases. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. But they aren’t afraid to make that attempt.
 
So what would stop them from trying another crossover franchise if Smash Bros is starting to get too big for them?

• Chief Producer Minato's demand for the next episode preview was to "make (the viewers) feel an overwhelming sense of hope". Asisstant Producer Daigo Matsuura and Assistant Director Otojirou Satou (in charge of making the next ep previews) went all-out in response to that demand and even used the intro of CHEMYxSTORY.
• THE SKY'S THE LIMIT, the new insert song by BACK-ON x Beverly is already available on streaming platforms. Of course, you will be able to listen to it next week during Rainbow Gotchard's debut. By the way, the title was proposed by the BACK-ON crew.
• The essense of Kamen Rider, as a TV shows destined for young kids, is to show the heroes defeating the enemies in an exciting way every week. But what does it mean to fight? What does it mean to defeat the monsters? By sealing the monsters into cards, Gotchard was able to escape the "violence" depicted by the early Heisei Rider series. The Riders fight to entertain the viewers. Through hardship, they learn friendship. But of course, it's just a TV show for 6 years old, "just" entertainment. And because Gotchard was created to be bright and fun at its core, the show will probably proceed with that stance in the future. But just for today, they had to stop and focus on that aspect. Why? Because 1) Gotchard is a Kamen Rider series, and 2) Gotchard is a show themed around "interaction between things".
• If coming together with the Chemies in a cheerful and fun way is a type of "interaction", then surely fighting with the dark and ugly Malgams would be one too, right? Neglecting the latter because he has worked hard to gain the former would mean that all of Houtarou's efforts would become lies. And it's not about saying that "violence is bad" or anything. It's just that it would be rude for Houtarou to gloss over that. This is why they decided to use the only (?) Kamen Rider characteristic that the so-called "not Kamen Rider-like" Gotchard uses, "a monster born from both good and evil", as a trial for Houtarou.
• Director Tasaki chose the grey-leaved euryops (Euryops pectinatus) as the yellow flower from that fairy tale.
• Hopper1 Malgam is voiced by Misato Fukuen, who already voices Hopper1 and Crosshopper. By the way, during an interview with Uchuusen that took place just before the recording of episode 35, she was asked "Do you have any hopes for Hopper1 in the future?". Her answer was: "I don't want him to turn evil". She of course didn't know about what was awaiting Hopper1..
• THe mother of the kid saved by Houtarou at the end was played by Saori Suzuhara. Both mother and child played an extremely important role in the trial proposed by Akiko Inoue. It's all about the dilemma of being a hero: Houtarou is the hero, not for himself, but to save other peoples.
• The order from Chief Producer Minato for this episode was "next episode is going to be the final form debut episode, so I want this episode to be a really depressing one". Inoue's first proposition was the "trial" talked previously, with her suggestion being "the most despairing thing for Houtarou would be to have to destroy Chemies with his own hands". However, she wasn't the one who said "let's turn Hopper1 into a Malgam". Actually, back when they were working on episodes 3 and 4, AP Matsuura told Scriptwriter Keiichi Hasegawa "You know, since the Malgam system exists, Hopper1 will have to turn into one at some point. Just kidding." Hasegawa's answer was "I see... That's great." And so, ever since then, Matsuura warmed up to that idea (mainly because of Hasegawa's positive response to his half-joke statement) and kept it in his mind. Ultimately, Hasegawa did something similar during Episode 36 with Skebows. So when Inoue asked about if it was possible to have Houtarou destroy Chemies, Matsuura naturally answered "I see... If it's for that purpose, I know a good one. Have you ever heard of Hopper1?" After 6 months, Matsuura was finally able to do it.
• The first part of the episode, with Hopper1's first errand, made full use of the techniques cultivated by the Toei Tokusatsu team to make dolls appear as if they are alive: Tying Hopper1 with piano wire to make him bounce! Houtarou's bag made in a way that allowed Director Tasaki himself to stick his hand from below to make move Hopper1! Letting Hopper1 at the dog owner's home for a few days so that the dog wouldn't get scared during filming! And by the way, the dog owner is Ayumi Shimozono, Majade's suit actress, who's known for often appearing in flesh with her dogs in Toei Tokusatsu shows (such as her multiple appearences in Avatarou Sentai Donbrothers)

• AP Matsuura was wondering until the end whether or not to change Fukuen's voice actor credit to "Hopper1/Hopper1 Malgam". Because, you know, as a TV company, they have to show exciting parts in the previews to build-up hype. But in the end, he decided to go with no credits after hearing Fukuen dubbing the errand part: by spoiling Hopper1 turning into a monster, people won't be able to fully enjoy the cute errand part!
• This episode's title was created by TV Asahi's Producer Shibako, who took the "treasure" part from Tamami's lines.
• At some point, there were plans of including a scene with Steamliner preparing himself to mourn Hopper1 as a friend, but they didn't include it out of consideration (though it probably happened even if not shown).
• Gigist's plan was to make Houtarou fall into darkness and turn him into a Malgam, with the Chemy being the egg inside of him, so that he could then separate them and get the egg back. But Houtarou was saved by that same egg, shutting himself up inside of a shell of sadness. As it turns out, eggs are an important symbol in alchemy (search philosophers' egg if you want to learn more). The Alchemist Academy mark is also shaped like an egg. The egg is voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto, a very famous voice actor (Bakugou in My Hero Academia or more recently Himmel in Frieren).
• The first trial given to Houtarou was when Sabi-senpai was turned into Dread. The ordeal of being brutally exposed to the violence and fear of others. However, the final trial is the exact opposite. This time, it's about facing his own violence and fear. He has to look inside himself, to overcome himself. To be reborn once again. Next week, it's time for the once-in-a-lifetime great transmutation of Houtarou Ichinose himself. There is no rainbow without rain after all.

HUSBAND???? They had JUST reconnected after this ugly custody case 2 MONTHS AGO? HE JUST FUCKED ME RAW LIKE 3 DAYS AGO? Admittedly I def went a little crazy. I called him, he tried to gaslight me, saying that I had messaged his “sister” and that I was fucking insane, to never contact him or his family. By the time he hung up, she deleted her facebook. I have no idea what story he must’ve spun to hide his affair and get her to do that. He blocked me on everything.
I called him about a billion times but eventually I gave up looking for answers. The nature of our dynamic and the way he “trained” me I was literally brainwashed. I couldn’t work, I went from making 5 digits a month to missing rent payments. I mean I was spun OUTTTT.
I decided to get back on the same app I had met him on, after months of getting over it, to try to move on. Immediately got a message, from him. He told me he’d never meet anybody like me again, and that nobody was supposed to get hurt, that I was made for him, and that I didn’t know anything about his situation. He assured to me he wasn’t with her & was manipulative enough to make me believe it. He gaslit me and I gaslit myself into believing I just made it up.
More months go by and I try to cut contact a few times but he ropes me back in with “you were made for me” stuff. I fold every time.
So now, almost a year after finding out about the “wife”, I still talk to him frequently. We sext often. We haven’t seen each other physically in a couple months but we plan to. Talk of his personal life is cryptic at best. Last time I heard from him was 2 weeks ago now, he messaged me drunk while I myself was drunk and that’s when it all came out.
He told me he loved me, that he was with her for the kid and needed her to move in so he could be active in his kid’s life every single day, instead of splitting custody. That he had to pretend to want to be with her and start a family. That he felt trapped, and dreams of the life we could still have in the future. He said ultimately he will and has always loved me and one day hopes to rekindle what we had. We stayed up talking till 6am. It was like once he said he loved me (which hasn’t happened since the breakup) he COULD NOT stop saying it.
Briefly I was relieved, but the next day he went right back to the storyline that he didn’t live with her, I misinterpreted and jumped to conclusions.
I was 19 when we met, and he was 36. He never intended to truly date me out of shame for his bisexuality, but I didn’t get the luxury of knowing that like he did. He got me to start an Onlyfans, which I now realize HUGELY hinders my ability to work most stable jobs in the future and SEVERELY shrinks my already tiny dating pool. He’s totally wrecked my trust in men and given me serious issues I’ll probably carry for life. Part of me feels like I was groomed. I still do love him, but I hate him for what he did to me.
I want to tell her because it’s “girl code” and if I was her I would want to know. She’s so oblivious and probably just as brainwashed as I was. If I’m honest it’s mostly because I want him to suffer but if his story is true (custody, covering his bases for abuse allegations, etc) I would be bringing down a lot more than a relationship. I’d be tearing apart his family, potentially getting his son taken from him. Plus, there would be no way for me to tell her without including the trans bit, which would have him excommunicated from his parents and siblings. It would ruin his life.
He DESERVES to lose her 100% but I don’t know if total dissolution of his life is equal punishment.
So… thoughts? What would you do? And please don’t just tell me I’m an idiot for letting it go this far, that part I know. Hah.

When DC started making live action content, one major complaint audiences had was how drab and dour everything felt. I propose something a little more comedic and uplifting, and I think the best face for this is the Legion of Superheroes (though, since they're bogged down by a huge cast and a lot of complicated continuity, I'll aim for a slightly different take on them).

Here's The Pitch: A few years back, Earth was invaded by the alien conqueror Brainiac, a remorseless cyborg who collected the culturally significant bits of dozens of planets. He was, naturally, defeated by Superman (with some begrudging aid from Lex Luthor). It could have ended there, just another episode in the hero's long and storied career. Nobody expected that the incident might change the whole world.
In the aftermath of Brainiac's defeat, hundreds of alien life forms abducted from across the galaxy escaped from his "collection," with no means of returning home, thus leaving the US government to deal with a new influx of off-world refugees.
Fast forward a bit. Lex Luthor, having milked "his" victory over Brainiac for PR purposes, has been elected President of the United States. With the White House destroyed in the invasion, he now runs the country from Monument Point, a complex outside Metropolis decorated with "collected" Earth monuments yet to be restored to proper size. President Luthor's newest proposed initiative? A work-visa program which allows aliens living on Earth to become Lawful Extraterrestrial Government Employees (LEGE! Get it? Like Legion?... okay, we'll work on the acronym) and strive for eventual American citizenship.
From there on out, the story focuses on various young aliens who enter the program, work various government jobs that suit their inhuman abilities, interact in comedic fashion with human coworkers, and, whenever it become applicable, fight crime. Depending on what kind of work our characters are assigned to, the show has the potential to be anything from an office comedy to more of a police procedural, but fundamentally will be a sort of immigrant story about the struggle to acclimate to a new culture. Elements of the familiar DC Universe will feature sporadically just for the fanservice, and Superman's presence will be continually felt (if usually in the background); to the Legion, he will be variously the person they aspire to be like, or the person they resent for not facing their own daily struggles.

* The Legion has to deal with a radical pro-human anti-alien hate group.
* Luthor pushes the Legionnaires into missions that serve his own sinister purposes and has some kind of evil scheme. Duh. I dunno, maybe Brainiac is still alive inside him? They did that before and people liked it.
* The Legion meets their time-traveling descendants from a thousand years in the future, and learn about how their actions will ultimately make Earth a place where all species are welcome, inspiring them to carry on despite all adversity. D'aaaaaw.
* Lots of cheesy "aliens don't get Earth culture" dialogue.
