2024.05.18 19:03 Mathew0897 The JSTLK Incident Summary

In recent Drama on Anything Else JSTLK called in to complain about Dan making jokes about him being a GroypeNazi and also referring to him as 'Jew Stalker' instead of JSTLK.

The Call in

JSTLK (J) Calls into Anything else to talk to Dan (D): Link @ 1:34:10 - 1:40:50
  1. J: Did you see Hasan go ahead and call me a Nazi recently
  2. D: No
  3. J: So i asked you very nicely, probably a month ago, not to do that meme, right?
  4. D: Do what meme
  5. J: The 'Jew Stalker Meme'
  6. D: I didn't, I haven't
  7. D: This is a serous podcast this is not the place for this

  8. D: Ok so are you upset that i call you 'J-Stalk'
  9. J: No you called me Jew Stalker and called me antisemitic
  10. D: I did that once
  11. J: But i asked you before that specifically not too
  12. J: i did
  13. D: Well i think i said it in jest, i'd have to go back tot he clip and watch it
  14. J: You did not say it in jest, you were upset with me and said it intentionally
  15. D: I said something along the lines of 'Man, maybe those Jew Stalker memes aren't a joke here
  16. J: Yeah you were implying i was antisemitic, it wasn't a joke
  17. D: it's what we call a Joke...
  18. D: Anyways we will just go with it being a joke
  19. J: Ok, well about 3 weeks ago you told me specifically you were going to help me clean this up
  20. D: yeah i banned a bunch of people on the subreddit that were making the Jew Stalker thing and deleting the posts
  21. J: You banned 2 on the 1 day when August asked you
  22. D: i think i did more than that
  23. J: but you didn't come out and say that's not true. You didn't come out and do anything to clean that up at all
  24. J: Despite telling me you were going too
  25. D; I don't know if it's my place to clean it up
  26. J: It is when you lean into it and make it way more of a meme then it ever was before
  27. D: I did it one time, and it was a joke when i did it
  28. J : You did it one time and then it spiralled out from there

  29. D: You know what this is, it's a cry bully situation
  30. J: Where's the cry bully

  31. D: I don't know what you want me to say in this circumstance right now
  32. Destiny: He want's you apologise for starting a rumour about him that got picked up by Hasan
  33. D: You wouldn't live a day in my shoes
  34. Destiny: You literally do, you cried for months about people making pedophile jokes and shit about you too. Where you were perma-banning people from Chat, Subreddit and Discord for ever bringing it up. He's asking for the same type of credibility, that's all he's looking for
  35. D: That was like, i think a different situation that happened for months, this is talking about 1 comment, 1 time, that was made in jest
  36. D: You know what, fuck it, I'm sorry, you are not the 'Jew Stalker' and i disavow any Jew Stalker Memes that have been made as a result of my one comment 1 time 3 weeks ago
  37. D: is that all you wanted?
  38. J: I wanted you to come on stream and do it yourself because you said you would 3 weeks ago and about a week ago, so i'm just wondering why it took this long
  39. Lycan: Didn't, we just have a conversation where certain comments can be taken way further than they were intended too and there should be repercussions

  40. J: Just in case people don't know why i'm upset about this, i have Kaceytron spreading it, i have Hasan spreading it , it's all over Twitter and shit, this is a problem for me as i wanted to do this for a career and shit and now if i face reveal i have that meme attached to anything i do personally now so when people google my name i'm fucked, right?
  41. D: No i think you'll be ok
  42. H: You think it's ok to have prominent figures online with millions of followers calling you a Nazi
  43. D: Is it ok, well i think if you are in Destiny's orbit it's going to happen to pretty much anyone that's an orbiter of Steven
  44. J: and when people around destiny also do it? You don;t think that's a problem
  45. D: I don't know, I guess if it happens over and over again then yeah you would step in at that point, yeah if it becomes a running thing yeah it think that would be the good litmus test, i think we've done a pretty good job

  46. D: Listen i don;t know enough about you to say if you are or not, my suspicion is you're not
  47. J: 'Every single day i'm called a Jew Stalker, Groyper, Nazi in DGG or on Reddit and i'll be checking, Every day it happens i'll leak 1 random detail of what we we;re talking about lats month
  48. J: Start cleaning it up
  49. J: Have a good one buddy, Love you, Bye

Claims/Statements made in the call

Is JSTLK a Groyper

DGG Logs: Link Redacted up to 2024-01-30
Reddit Logs: Link Redacted up to 2023-10-16
Twitter: Link Redacted up to 2023-10-12
It's important to start this with the knowledge that JSTLK has redacted logs so proof is hard to find.
The Past Most DGGer's will at least have the feeling that JSTLK was a Groyper when he first engaged with the community and even leaned into the meme/claim himself.
This is true, but proving it isn't that easy anymore.
DGG JSTLK Mentions Logs: Link
If we look at DGG Logs form the date prior to JSTLK's Redact we can see that there are many logs of people mentioning him either calling him a Groyper or worse for months and months.
Yes we can't take comments from other DGG's as 100% fact but it's clear that he was widely knows as a Nick Fuentes simp/Groyper (same thing): 1, 2
From the Logs alone you can say that JSTLK was most likely a Groyper.
The Present With that being said, it looks like JSTLK has publicly moved away from any Groyper stuff since the start of 2024, this is good and based on this there is no reason to think JSTLK is currently a Groyper.
The Plan The weird thing is the re-writing of history.
If a person is X for yeas and then in 6 months time claims to be Y and explains why they changed, that's ok.
If a person is X for yeas and in 6 months time claims to be Y without ever acknowledging X and trying to hide proof of X and others are on board with this it's incredibly suspicious. Especially when the person has a financial incentive to be Y, at least publicly (we all know people can make careers of Destiny/his community).
All that has to be done is own that he used to be a Groyper and that he isn't anymore.

Weird Targeting

It is very easy to be aggressive/antagonistic to people who can't damage you much in return.
Destiny Destiny has fostered a community of people that for at least a year and a half have held the belief that JSTLK is a Groyper. If JSTLK truly has a life ruining issue with this perception of himself then he should go after Destiny.
But he wont.
He is scared that going after Destiny for something his community believes (which isn't unfounded) would damage the Destiny bridge and as such his prospects of being a content creator.
He is the little dog meme here.
Dan He is happy to not only blame Dan but push the unfounded story that he's the reason that all the bad press to JSTLK is happening. This is wild.
The main trigger to all of this was Hasan's statement about JSTLK
Dan can't and shouldn't be held responsible for a statement that Hasan makes about JSTLK unless Hasan directly sourced Dan for the comment.
As we have recently learned Hasan knows a fuck ton of DGG lore, him thinking that one of the current biggest orbiters is a GroypeNazi isn't crazy for him to find considering it was the general feeling of JSTLK throughout the whole community before Dan has said anything.
This is all targeted because JSTLK doesn't have much to lose by going after Dan and he's too much of a coward to target Destiny.

Source your arguments

Lastly it's super cringe to call into a show and say remember when you said this 3 weeks ago, yeah well because of that you ruined my life and i'm going to try and blackmail you now.
If you call into a show and have an issue with something they said, unless it's that very stream or a very common talking point, you should have to provide a clip.

TLDR:

JSTLK was a Groyper DGG thought he was a Groyper for over a year In the last 4 months publicly JSTLK hasn't said anything that can link him to being a Groyper JSTLK deleted all public presence prior to 4 months ago He only attacked Dan because he's too scared to blame Destiny/DGG There is some weird rewrite of history where JSTLK was never a Groyper and thinking he was/is is unfounded
Change made: From the Logs alone you can, without a doubt, say that JSTLK was a Groyper. to From the Logs alone you can say that JSTLK was most likely a Groyper

2024.05.18 18:24 DoublleA Can somebody use undetectable AI for me?

Sorry if this sounds selfish but this is really only a one time thing for a friend. I need someone to use there undetectable AI account to paraphrase this please.
IntroductionThe rise of fast food chains in the United States from 2000 to 2010 had an impact on both the culture and economy. This period saw an increase in obesity rates among Americans, which coincided with the growth of these eateries. In this essay we delve into the connection between the expansion of fast food franchises and the obesity epidemic examining factors that influence health. Through an analysis of data, health studies and relevant literature our goal is to provide an understanding of how consuming food has played a role in fueling obesity during this particular decade, in America. The Growth of Fast Food Chains
Between 2000 and 2010 there was a rise in the fast food industry. Popular chains such as McDonalds, Burger King and Subway expanded their reach by opening stores to meet the demand for budget friendly meals. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that the number of fast food eateries increased by around 20% during this timeframe (U.S. Census Bureau, 2011). This expansion made fast food more convenient for a range of people, including kids and teenagers.
Obesity Trends in the U.S. (2000 2010)
The prevalence of obesity in America has been on a trajectory during the early years of the 21st century. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the rate of obesity among adults rose from 30.5% in 2000 to 35.7% in 2010 (CDC, 2011). Similarly among children and teens aged between 2 and 19 years old obesity rates increased from 13.9% to 16.9% over that period. This continuous increase signals a concerning public health issue with impacts on illness rates, mortality rates and healthcare expenses.
The Impact of Fast Food, on Eating Habits
food is commonly known for its levels of calories, excessive saturated fats, sugars and sodium with little nutritional value. These aspects of food are closely associated with weight gain and obesity. Studies show that regular consumption of food is linked to consuming calories and maintaining poor eating habits (Bowman & Vineyard 2004). Research conducted by Pereira et al. (2005) revealed that individuals who ate food than twice a week were more likely to gain weight and develop insulin resistance compared to those who consumed it less frequently.
Influence of Socioeconomic Factors
The easy availability and affordability of food make it an attractive option for people with incomes. Fast food establishments are often concentrated in low income areas where residents have limited access to dining choices (Powell et al. 2007). This situation, referred to as "food deserts " , worsens the issue of obesity because disadvantaged groups tend to rely on food as their main source of nutrition.
Impact of Advertising and Promotion
The aggressive advertising tactics used by fast food companies also have a significant influence on eating behaviors particularly among young individuals, like children and teenagers.
Many businesses invest sums of money each year in marketing showcasing their products across platforms, like TV, the web and social networks. Kids are especially influenced by these strategies that highlight the appeal and ease of food reinforcing harmful dietary patterns early on.
The impact of obesity, on health is significant and variedObesity is a factor in chronic illnesses like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and certain cancers (Flegal et al., 2012). The rise in obesity rates has led to an increase in health issues putting a strain on the healthcare system. The financial implications of obesity are also noteworthy with studies indicating that medical costs linked to obesity made up around 10% of healthcare expenses in the United States during that time (Cawley & Meyerhoefer 2012).
Policies and public health effortsIn response to the escalating obesity crisis, different policies and public health efforts have been put into action at state and local levels. These initiatives aim to encourage eating habits through measures like food labeling requirements, restrictions on advertising foods to children and campaigns raising awareness about the risks of obesity (Koplan et al., 2007). Schools have been a point for intervention well, with endeavors to enhance the nutritional value of school meals and boost physical activity among students.ExamplesVarious real life examples and stories showcase the effectiveness of taking action to address the issue of obesity. For example, New York City put in place a set of strategies to combat obesity, such as displaying calorie information on menus and prohibiting trans fats in restaurant dishes. These initiatives led to improvements in people's eating habits and a slight decrease in obesity levels, within the community (Dumanovsky et al. 2011).ChallengesThe obesity epidemic still poses challenges despite the efforts to address it. Unhealthy eating habits deeply ingrained in society, the presence of the fast food industry and disparities in status all add layers of complexity to this issue. Moving forward it is crucial to focus on creating an environment that encourages choices for vulnerable communities. This entails advocating for policies that restrict the marketing of foods to children, enhancing access to options in low income areas and urging food companies to improve the health profile of their products.
Psychological marketingWhen it comes to food marketing companies go beyond advertising tactics by leveraging deep rooted psychological triggers that influence consumer behavior. Bright colors, catchy tunes and recognizable mascots are commonly used in food ads to build a memorable brand image. This technique is particularly effective with audiences like children and teenagers who're more susceptible and likely to develop lasting brand loyalties. Research indicates that exposure to these advertisements can lead children to prefer calorie, nutrient foods ultimately impacting their dietary decisions and contributing to weight gain (Boyland & Halford 2013).The impact of portion sizes
One overlooked but significant factor contributing to the obesity crisis is the increasing sizes of portions served by food chains. Over time portion sizes have substantially grown, with meals exceeding the recommended calorie intake for a single meal. Young and Nestles (2002) study reveals that fast food item portions have expanded over the years with some items now more than double their size. This phenomenon of "portion distortion" results in calorie consumption as individuals tend to eat when faced with larger servings often underestimating the actual caloric content.
Changes in lifestyle and time constraints
The contemporary way of life characterized by schedules and time limitations has also played a role in the heightened dependence on fast food. With an increase in dual income households and longer work hours many people find themselves lacking the time to cook meals. Fast food emerges as a solution offering cost effective options that align with busy routines. Nonetheless this convenience comes at a price as frequent consumption of food is linked to dietary patterns and increased calorie intake contributing to the surge in obesity rates (Smith, Ng & Popkin 2013).Another significant measure involves restricting the promotion of foods to children. By reducing kids exposure to food ads policymakers aim to lessen the impact of marketing on their eating habits. Some cities have also imposed taxes on beverages and unhealthy foods in an effort to discourage consumption through penalties. While the effectiveness of these strategies may vary they mark progress in combating the obesity crisis.
Approaches Rooted in Communities
Community based strategies for addressing obesity highlight the importance of initiatives and grassroots movements. Programs that concentrate on enhancing access to foods encouraging activity and educating community members about healthy eating have shown positive outcomes. For example community gardens and farmers markets can offer produce to residents living in areas with access to healthy food options promoting better dietary choices. Schools and community centers can also play a role by providing nutrition education and physical activity programs.
The Impact of Technology
Technology has increasingly become an asset in the battle against obesity. Mobile applications and wearable gadgets enable individuals to monitor their calorie intake and exercise levels offering feedback and motivating lifestyle choices.
Furthermore social networking sites can play a role, in advocating for public health initiatives and sharing details on diet and wellness. Although technology isn't a solution to the issue of obesity it provides avenues to involve people and groups in embracing healthier habits (Stephens & Allen 2013).
Future Directions and Recommendations
The approach to tackling obesity needs to be multi-faceted and should involve collaboration between government departments, health workers, local communities, as well as the food industry. In future, there is need for more efforts in creating an atmosphere that supports healthier selections particularly among the disadvantaged groups. This means that one should continue to campaign for policies aimed at reducing children’s exposure to unhealthy food advertisements, improving availability of healthy foods in deprived neighborhoods and encouraging manufacturers in the food sector to change their products into a healthier version.
Further still public health campaigns will try and focus on having balanced diets regularly done exercises. Schools and offices can succeed by developing well-structured meals alongside opportunities for exercising. More research is also needed to understand why some people are poor eaters or overweight than others.
Policy Proposals
To further combat the menace of overweight, policy makers should think about enacting a variety of evidence-based strategies. Some of them could be: Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Taxes: Taxes on sugary drinks can decrease consumption and raise funds for public health projects. Zoning Regulations: By controlling the number of fast food restaurants in given areas, intake will subside and encourage establishment of grocery stores among other healthier alternatives.Menu Labeling Laws: This makes sure that restaurants indicate calorie counts as well as other nutritional information to assist customers in making informed choices. School Nutrition Standards: Schools meals and snacks in the course of learning ought to meet recommended nutrition levels so that students are eating healthy. Addressing Behavioral FactorsBehavioral interventions also play a significant role in dealing with obesity. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and other psychological approaches aid individuals to develop better eating habits and deal with triggers involved in overeating. Programs addressing weight control which incorporate behavior change counseling together with diet and exercise components show promise towards helping individuals achieve successful long term weight loss.Long-Term Commitment and Sustainable Change
Society must collectively make a commitment that will last over a long period to reduce obesity rates. The approach should be ongoing and flexible enough to accommodate changing circumstances and new information. For this change to be lasting, there must be continuous investment in public health infrastructure, research, and education. Therefore, significant strides can be achieved in reducing obesity rates by nurturing a culture that appreciates wellness.
Cultural Shifts and Public Perception
In addressing the obesity epidemic another critical factor is shifting public opinion as well as cultural norms with regards to food and health. The acceptance of fast food and oversize portions as normative has been one of the major drivers towards unhealthy eating habits over the past few decades. This would involve public health campaigns focused on what constitutes healthy balanced meals and promoting on good home cooked fresh meal benefits instead. To change public perception cooking classes nutrition workshops media campaign advertising preparation advantages of healthy meals at home for instance.
Strengthening Health Care Interventions
Routine screenings, counseling and support for weight management by health care providers are crucial in handling obesity. Obesity prevention and treatment should be integrated into primary care to ensure consistency and comprehensiveness in people’s health. Personalized advice can be availed by the healthcare practitioners and also set realistic targets as well as referring patients to dietitians or structured weight loss programs.
Advancing Research and Use of Proven Practices
To better understand the intricate contributors to obesity and curate effective interventions, it is important to sustain research. Longitudinal studies that follow diet patterns, activity levels, and disease outcomes offer useful information on how to prevent or reduce obesity. By exploring behavioral, environmental and genetic factors that affect obesity, this will enable us to make interventions that are specific for different populations and situations as well.
Conclusion
The period between 2000 and 2010 registered a sharp increase of obesity rates that is closely linked to the spread of fast food outlets across America. This public health menace can only be fought with multidimensional approaches that will change public attitude, improve education, enhance corporate accountability and support inclusive research plus health care interventions. By creating an environment where good health is appreciated through provision of necessary resources and support, we can achieve significant milestones in curbing cases of obesity within our population as well as overall improvement in their welfare.

2024.05.18 16:55 Specialist_Fee_5385 How to add ink to OneNote page using Microsoft Graph API

I am trying to add ink to OneNote pages through the Microsoft Graph API. I have read this article, https://devblogs.microsoft.com/microsoft365dev/onenote-ink-beta-apis/, but it was written in 2017 and it seems that the graph api is preferred now.
I tried using this curl command:
curl -X POST https://graph.microsoft.com/v1.0/me/onenote/sections/[id]/pages \ -H "Authorization: Bearer [...]" \ -H "Content-Type: application/xhtml+xml" \ -H "Content-Disposition: form-data; name=presentation-onenote-inkml" \ --data-binary @- < /inkml:traceFormat /inkml:channelProperties /inkml:inkSource /inkml:context /inkml:brush /inkml:definitions 12105 14014 2560, 11649 14071 3840, 11047 14166 5120, 10839 14195 4992, 10549 14222 5504, 10237 14227 6144, 9909 14199 7040, 9622 14125 7936, 9375 13991 8704, 9181 13790 9472, 9045 13516 9856, 8977 13152 10368, 8986 12709 10368, 9088 12189 10368, 9250 11614 10240, 9475 11031 10240, 9742 10459 10112, 10020 9923 10112, 10277 9438 9984, 10492 9022 9856, 10655 8667 9856, 10748 8376 9856, 10777 8140 9856, 10751 7959 9856, 10656 7819 9856, 10504 7726 9984, 10285 7668 10112, 10018 7668 10240, 9680 7720 10240, 9293 7824 10240, 8898 7982 10240, 8491 8177 10368, 8115 8387 10112, 7794 8584 9984, 7547 8740 9472, 7387 8839 8960, 7334 8875 7808, 7362 8846 6784, 7504 8715 3456, 7800 8473 256/inkml:trace /inkml:traceGroup /inkml:ink EOF
but what gets written to the page is just the numbers in the
I also tried the http request in the https://devblogs.microsoft.com/microsoft365dev/onenote-ink-beta-apis/ but replaced the url with the graph note url, but I keep getting the error The multi-part payload was malformed.". I see a lot of people talk about how the use inkML in-conjunction with the oneNote API based on that blog post, but I am just confused as to how they achieved it.
I figured out how to get inkML from oneNote, but I don't now to write ink to oneNote via API. If anyone can show me how to do this, I will be ever so grateful.
Thanks to anyone that responds :)

2024.05.18 03:35 Ivan_Redditor 2000s MCU (Phase 2)

2000s MCU (Phase 2)
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
I would have Matthew Vaughn do this (if it wasn’t for those execs writing a fake script for Halle Berry) or Sam Raimi as some sort of side project for him so that he could also take time developing the story of Spider-Man 3.
I would keep the original ideas of TLS like the opening where there are random interferences around the world. The mutant cure and the creation of Sentinels are responses to these attacks.
I would also make Nightcrawler an official member of the team instead of just being left out after X2.
Cyclops still leaves the mansion and DOESN’T GET FUCKING KILLED OFF. He comes back in the final battle as a deus ex machina ala Han Solo in A New Hope and Harry Osborn in Spider-Man 3. Jean and Professor X don’t get killed off. Jean turns into a figure of energy in the end and tells the X-Men that she’ll be watching as he ascends to the stars.
I would add a few more scenes of Angel to show his acceptance of being a mutant while showing his rocky relationship with his father and give him a bigger role in the film.
Rogue doesn’t take the mutant cure and is officially an X-Men member. She also is more like the comics counterpart and would fight against the Magneto-controlled Sentinels in the final battle.
The Brotherhood would be the same, but with more members. Scarlet Witch (Christina Ricci) and Quicksilver (Jensen Ackles) are introduced. Juggernaut (who’s much bigger than the one in the movie we got and is revealed to be Charles’ adopted brother), Callisto, and Pyro are more badass in this version and wouldn’t get done dirty.
This would also be the movie where the X-Men are exposed to the world, which make people see them as terrorists, but the public reception improves as the film progresses. It ends with Cyclops telling a speech to the world that they’re here to protect them from world-ending threats and that they fight for mutant rights.
More Oscorp, Stark Industries, Daily Bugle, and S.H.I.E.L.D. references.
Blade: Trinity (2006)
This would be a Blade-centred story, no Hannibal King or Jessica Biel. Vampire is a much better villain in this version. Moon Knight (Aaron Eckhart) and Werewolf By Night (Benicio Del Toro) are introduced here and helps Blade fight Dracula in the finale.
This would set up the Midnight Sons.
Doctor Strange (2006)
Same plot as the 2016 film. Johnny Depp is Doctor Strange, Christoph Waltz is Kaecilius, and Keanu Reeves is Baron Mordo (him and Depp switched would work too).
Post credits scene shows Blade in the Sanctum Sanctorum, telling Strange that he needs his help to assemble a team.
Spider-Man 3 (2007)
I’d probably keep all the deleted scenes that Raimi made. It would be both the Editor’s Cut and The Raimi Cut combined into one. I would’ve gone with the original Venom design, which looked creepier than the one we got instead. Eddie and Sandman get more screen time and I wouldn’t make him be Uncle Ben’s killer. MJ has something to do in this film and helps Peter and Harry in the final battle.
Gwen is the damsel in distress here instead of MJ and that she dies in the final battle. Her and Harry’s death would make Peter heartbroken after all of this. The ending will be the same as the actual film and show Peter's start of moving on from Gwen and starting a new life with MJ.
Baxter Building and Stark Industries building sightings also appear.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2007)
Same as the film we got but this would be the introduction of Black Widow (Milla Jovovich). Ali Larter would play Sharon Carter and Will Smith would play Falcon. Alexander Pierce turns out to be Red Skull, showing that the Tesseract swooped him to the 50s and that (in disguise) he’s the one who actually made S.H.I.E.L.D. absorb Hydra.
Red Skull would be arrested and sent to The Raft by General Ross in the ending.
Ghost Rider (2007)
This would be R Rated and would be a lot darker. Johnny’s transformation into Ghost Rider is more grotesque and disgusting. Mephisto would have his comic accurate look. Blackheart doesn’t have that Twilight-esque relationship with Eva Mendes. Carter Slade would ironically be recasted to Harrison Ford.
Blade appears in the post-credit scene.
Iron Man 2 (2008)
This version still has Justin Hammer (Bob Odenkirk for a Rockwell take, Ian McDiarmid for a comic accurate take) as the main villain, with Whiplash as his henchman. This would also showcase Tony’s alcoholism much better. Would also set up more references to The Ten Rings. Whiplash gets the suit and becomes Crimson Dynamo for this version.
The Incredible Hulk (2008)
The Leader is the main villain. It would just be u/vampira199x Hulk 2003 pitch that he made for his 2000s MCU, which I liked and was the main inspiration for this pitch while also borrowing ideas from other posts in the subreddit.
The Punisher 2 (2008)
It would just be the 2005 game, but with Barracuda as the villain, no Stark Industries battle, and remove the framing device. More glimpses of the Baxter Building, Oscorp, and Stark Tower in the background of some shots.
Fantastic Four and The Mole Men (2009)
This would have Mole Man (Danny DeVito) and the Moloids as the villain. This would be more space adventure-esque but with the final battle taking place on Earth. Reed and Sue still get married like in ROTSS, but with The Avengers, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Daredevil, and the X-Men (without Wolverine) attending. S.H.I.E.L.D. helps during the final battle.
Daredevil: Born Again (2009)
It would just be DD S3, but with Elektra (Penelope Cruz) and The Hand.
This would introduce Jessica Jones (Liv Tyler). She appears in the ending, taking pictures of Kingpin getting arrested and Daredevil watching on top of the building.
Wolverine: The Story of Weapon X (2010)
I delayed this film a year later for the 2007-2008 writers strike to end (which is one of the reasons why X-Men Origins: Wolverine sucked)
It would still be about his origins and is Rated R, and would be more focused on Wolverine’s origins from getting his bone claws and the darker aspects of the character to his Weapon X experiment, which would end the film.
Cap has a little cameo in the WW2 scenes and there would be mentions of the Weapon Plus program having him as the first guy to participate in the program. More S.H.I.E.LD. references.
Ant-Man and The Wasp (2010)
AIM and Darren Cross (Billy Zane) are the main villains here. It would just be the 2015 film but with the AIM from Iron Man 3. The film ends with Hank creating Ultron.
Thor: The Forbidden Daughter (2011)
It would just be Thor Ragnarok but without Hulk and not killing off the Warriors Three, since they will help him alongside Thor in the final battle. It would also be less comedic and have a much darker tone.
X-Men: First Class (2011)
Same film, but Darwin doesn’t die, he just turns into big ball of energy and shows up in the end after Charles is shot, watching in the sky.
Spider-Man 4 (2011)
Vulture (John Malkovich) is the main villain. It would probably just be the Spider-Man 4 Raimi wanted to make, with Black Cat (Anne Hathaway) to ruin Peter and MJ’s relationship. Felicia would go through some character development from being a cat burglar to a straight up anti-hero.
Luke Cage (Terry Crews) gets introduced in the post credit scene, watching the news coverage of Spider-Man defeating Vulture.
The Defenders (2012)
The Defenders (Spider-Man, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist (Chris Pine)) fight against Kingpin, who has now ruled over the Hand. It would just have the same story as the Netflix show, but with Kingpin as the main villain instead of Alexandra Reid and Elektra dying in the rubble with Kingpin, while Peter saves Matt from dying with her. It ends like the 2003 film.
It also is revealed that Peter and Jessica had a history, since Jessica had a crush on Peter when they were in school together.
The Midnight Sons (2012)
This would be horror-themed and would have Mephisto as the main villain. The lineup would consist of Blade, Moon Knight, Doctor Strange, Hannibal King (Peter Facinnelli), Werewolf by Night (Josh Hartnett), and Elsa Bloodstone (Minnie Driver).
Avengers: Age of Ultron Part 1 (2013)
It would adapt the Age of Ultron storyline justice but with Ultron assembling the Masters of Evil (or Liberators or Masters of Earth): Red Skull, Dr. Doom, Magneto, Sandman, The Mole Man, Loki, and The Leader. Magneto would also seem weary of the inclusion of Schmidt here, especially if you know his origin. Vision (Mark Strong) starts out as a villain here.
The ending shows that they failed, and leads to a bleak and dystopian future where the villains have ruled over the world.
This is also where Black Widow and Hawkeye (Timothy Olyphant) are integrated in the team. Wanda and Pietro too.
The Wolverine (2013)
Set before the events of AOU Part 1, but still the same movie. The Silver Samurai outfit is more smaller and the third act is a fight between him and Logan.
No DOFP tease post credit scene, since I’ll save it for later.
Avengers: Age of Ultron Part 2 (2013)
The Avengers would encourage the help from the F4, X-Men, and Spider-Man to stop them.
Spider-Man would fangirl over meeting Cap, since he often saw him as his idol due to Uncle Ben always telling stories about him and Peter reading a lot of Cap comics when he was a kid.
Cap would recognize Logan from his WW2 days, but Logan doesn’t remember because of the adamantium bullet wiping away his memories.
Magneto, Sandman, and Vision would turn against them and help the Avengers, F4, and X-Men fight the Masters of Evil, which they succeeded. Sandman sacrifices his life while fighting them. Magneto gets arrested and put in the restructured glass prison from X-Men and X2, but more secure. The battle causes a lot of collateral damage, which leads to the government creating the Superhuman Registration Act in response to the Ultron attack in the ending.

It was fun learning the strategy to compiling everchanging forms with a constant similarity. Then to crossfade a whole stack of images was a new process as well.

2024.05.18 00:00 AnnieIWillKnow [MATCH THREAD] Manchester United Women vs Chelsea FC Women - Saturday 18th May, 15:00 BST (WSL FINAL MATCH DAY)

Welcome to the /chelsealadiesfc match thread for the final WSL fixture of the 2023/24 season, away to Manchester United!

Date: 18th May 2024
KO: 15:00 BST
Competition: Women's Super League
Venue: Old Trafford

MATCH PREVIEW

It all comes down to this.
The fortieth game of what has been a gruellingly long season. The last of Emma Hayes' Chelsea tenure, and a season which has seen us compete for so long across four competitions - only to find ourselves at the very end, with just one left to compete for.
In the aftermath of the league defeat to Liverpool at the start of this month, it seemed that Hayes' last season would end cruelly without silverware. However, two late goals for Arsenal against Man City in their league fixture meant the title was back on the cards.
Chelsea edged to a tight 1-0 win vs Spurs midweek to win our game in hand - and mean we go into the final day level on points with our title rivals Man City, and with a two superior goal difference.
Injuries and adversity have beset at us every turn this year - but we have kept fighting, and are still alive.
The margins are incredibly tight.
The title is still in both teams' hands. Chelsea need to beat Man United away - a very tough fixture, especially given that the home side will be at a packed Old Trafford, and celebrating their 4-0 win in last weekend's FA Cup final, which brought them their first ever trophy.
They will be riding high, pressure-free - and determined to spoil the Chelsea and Emma Hayes farewell party. Man United were the side to knock us out of the FA Cup last month, too.
Man City, meanwhile, travel away to Aston Villa - an easier fixture on paper against a midtable side with nothing to play. Still, as this season has shown... anything can happen in the WSL.
A Chelsea win may not be enough - as it is feasible for Man City to overturn the goal difference advantage, standing at just two. If locked on points and goal difference, it will come down to goals scored, which Chelsea do lead in - and then if that is equal, the head to head record, in which case Man City would win.
In good news, Lauren James is fit and available for sleection again after a foot injury, having come on as a late substitute in the win vs Spurs. The fitness of Mayra Ramirez remains unknown - it seems unlikely she will feature.
It all comes down to this. Chelsea need to win in order to make it a fifth league title in a row - and need to hope Man City do not better our result.
It will be a very tense afternoon on Saturday - and one all Chelsea players, staff and fans hope ends with relief, and triumph.

HOW TO FOLLOW

Sky Sports will be broadcasting the match live in the UK. For those in other territories, it will also be available to watch for free online on the FA Player.
As always, text updates will also be provided by 5th Stand, and the club's official X/Twitter page.

MATCH EVENTS

KICK OFF! Under way on the final day
2' - GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! THE PERFECT START!! Ramirez on her return from injury nods home a Reiten cross, after the winger was given the freedom of Old Trafford down the left flank! Chelsea 1-0 Man United!!!!
8' - GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! oH MY GOOOOD. It's two!! Ramirez key again, playing in Rytting Kaneryd who finishes superbly from a tight angle... Chelsea 2-0 Man United!!!!
10' - Good lord it could have been three. Reiten through, but good defending from Man United prevents a third goal
19' - This game is far from done. United's first corner, and Le Tissier nods Zelem's delivery onto the bar...
20' - News from Birmingham, City are 1-0 up. Chelsea still champions as it stands, but only on GD...
37' - Chelsea put together a couple of nice moves, but little has really happened. Macario down receiving treatment, players are taking a drinks break
40' - SUBSTITUTION: Macario unfortunately has to come off, Nusken comes on
41' - Huge shout for a penalty after Ramirez is pulled down. Ref waves it away, which is no surprise given how officiating has often been this season
44' - GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! MAYRA RAMIREZ!! It's subsitute Nusken with the goal, but this was ALL the Colombian! Minutes after having breezed past Millie Turner and nearly won a penalty, Ramirez does the same again - and this time cuts it across goal for a simple tap in for Nusken. It's Chelsea 3-0 Man United!!
45' - GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! MAYRA RAMIREZ!! Ramirez is singlehandedly destroying Manchester United. Another storming run, and a brilliant finish. It's Chelsea 4-0 Man United and this really could not be going any better...
45+1' - Into SIX minutes of injury time
HALF TIME! Chelsea 4-0 Man United. Chelsea are champions, as it stands
SECOND HALF! Back under way
47' - GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! Starting the second half as we did the first. This is quite simply incredible. The Man United defending is woeful. A scramble in the box that United fail to clear, Reiten manages to cut it back for an unmarked Leupolz... Chelsea 5-0 Man United
58' - SUBSTITUTION: Ramirez had looked to be cramping up, in her first game back in several weeks after injury. Beever-Jones comes on in her place, with Ingle also replacing Leupolz.
60' - Cuthbert has a free kick from a good position, but puts it well over
65' - Villa have equalised!!! One hand on the trophy...
70' - SUBSTITUTIONS: Another double change. Lawrence on for Reiten, and Kirby on for Cuthbert - her final appearance in Blue. Huge ovation for a player who the fans had been singing for
75' - Man City back in front, but they do need seven more...
85' - GOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLL!! AND THE BEST OF THE DAY! A fairytale ending for Fran Kirby, who strokes it home with a type of finish we have all seen her score so many times... but none better. Incredibly emotional scenes as the whole team celebrate in front of the away end. Chelsea 6-0 Man United. It's ours.
90' - Five minutes added on. Five to the title. It's over at City. We are champions
FULL TIME! IT IS THERE! CHELSEA ARE CHAMPIONS ONCE AGAIN!

FINAL SCORE: CHELSEA 6-0 MANCHESTER UNITED

WE ARE CHAMPIONS

Up the Chels!

2024.05.17 23:42 stlatos Evidence Against *wik^- > z- in Albanian

Hamp’s theory that *wik^- > z- in Albanian has been challenged as unlikely phonetically. I do not feel that such considerations are important, since out of the thousands of sound changes needed throughout the world, at least some would look odd. Instead, I disagree with it due to other etymologies and sound changes that explain the data better.

  1. zog
Hamp’s *wik^e-gWo- > zog has no basis in comparative data. Instead, since *g^(h)w and *g^(h)y > z, metathesis in *g^haH2ghw- > *g^wa:g > zog :

*g^haH2ghu- > Arm. jag -u- ‘youngling / nestling / little bird / sparrow’, *g^wa:g > Alb. zog ‘young animal / nestling / bird / son’, Sog. zāγ ‘kind of bird’, NP zâγ / zâq ‘child / offspring’

Also, the similarity of *g^haH2ghu- to Skt. jahu- ‘young animal’ could be explained if *H2 were velar or uvular (Weiss 2016, Whalen 2024a) and caused optional assimilation of *g^haRg^hu-> *g^haRghu- outside of Skt. (which lost *-H2-). H-loss does not seem regular, but if one is desperate for regularity maybe there was optional dissimilation of *gh-gh > *g(h)-g(h) in both directions before regular *g-gh, etc., became standard, with *-Hg- > *-g- (Lubotsky 1981). Otherwise, if *-gh- was original, optional assimilation of *gh() in *g^haRghu-> *g^haRg^hu- for Skt. (similar to *s-ś > ś-ś in *smamk^ru- > *sma(m)k^ur- > Hittite zma(n)kur ‘beard’, šmankur-want- ‘bearded’; *smak^ru- > Sanskrit śmáśru-; etc.).

  1. -zet
*widk^mti- > *vinćati- > Skt. viṃśatí-, Iran. *vinsati > Os. insäj, G. Dor. wikati, Pamphylian phíkati, Alb. një-zet, Arm. k’san ‘20’

This word already has several oddities, so looking for regularity here seems suspect. Since it seems to contain *dwi-dek^mt ‘two tens’ > *(d)widk^mt-, *wik^- > z- in Albanian might not be possible anyway, even if other examples proved true. Of course, since it only appears in compounds (një-zet ‘20’, dy-zet ‘40’), there’s no reason to think initial *wi()k^- was the source at all. Loss of -V- in long words could be the cause. Thus, *-dk^- > *-dg^- > *-g^- might be possible, and only in compounds like *oino-widk^ati > *onyo-w(i)g^ati > *onyo-dg^wati, etc., did the loss of *-i- allow metathesis of *-wg^- > *-g^w-.

  1. zot
For *zo:tin > zot ‘lord’, *zo:tni: > zonjë / zojë ‘lady’, a source in *poti- > Skt. páti- ‘master / husband’ seems clear, but Hamp’s connection to *wik^-poti- (Skt. viśpáti- ‘master’) has problems. I do not see any reason to believe analogical **wik^-aH-poti- ever existed in Alb. (to explain -o- by *āpo > *ābo > *āo > *ā > o). If the etymology requires an unmotivated affix within the word, not seen in any cognates, it should be rejected. Instead, since Alb. is often similar to Greek, despótēs and fem. déspoina (Skt. dámpati-s, PIE *dems-poti- ‘master of the house’) makes more sense. Not only does Greek also have optional z- here (G. pédon ‘ground’, dápedon / zápedon ‘floor / ground’) for *dem(H2)- ‘house’, but Bithynian might show the same in G. despótēs : Bi. Ziboítēs \ Tiboítēs \ Zeipoítēs ‘a king’. That a cluster *-msp- could become -b- in Bi. means that it could in Alb. as well (no other ex.), so :
*dems-potin- > *de:z-potin > *de:z-botin > *de:botin > *de:otin > *de:tin > *zo:tin > zot

A change of *d > *z > s (based on accent) might also exist in (Whalen 2024c) :

*sweidro- / *swi:dro-? ‘sweat’ > G. hīdrṓs, Arm. k’irtn
*swi:zro- > Skt. kṣīrá-m ‘milk’, *swi:rso- > Alb. dirsë / djersë ‘sweat’

*bhlaido- ‘pallid / ill’ > Slavic *ble:do-, OE blát, Alb. *blaisuro- > blehurë ‘pale’

Still more words show optional d(h) / z in the area. Ex.:

G. pédon ‘ground’, dápedon / zápedon ‘flooground’

*d(e)mbh- > Skt. da(m)bh- ‘slay / destroy’, G. záphelos ‘violent’

*dlegWro- ‘naked’ >>
*dlegWor- > *ðlaγar- > Pashto laγaṛ ‘naked / bare’
*dlogWor- > *tlukWor- > EArm. tklor
*dlugWro- > G. zágros ‘barefoot’

G. dágklon / zágklon ‘sickle’ (likely a loan)

G. dérma ‘skin’, Th. zalmós, Ebro-zelmis \ Diza-zelmis “(having a) goat-skin”
G. dorā́ ‘skin’, *derha > Arm. teṙ ‘veil / coat’, Th. z(e)irá ‘kind of upper garment / cloak’

*H2azd- > G. áz[d]ō ‘dry up’, Arm. azazem ‘dry’
(*zd > *zz > z is not regular, see *nizdó- > E. nest, Arm. nist ‘site/dwelling’, *dorusdo- ‘thrush’ > *dorzdo- > *dorðo- > Arm. tordik)

*H1leudh- > Arm. eluzumn ‘sprout’, (compare elust ‘growing of plants’), mard-eloyz ‘man-kidnapper’

*(s)kewdh- > OE hýdan, E, hide, G. keúthō ‘covehide’, Arm. suzem ‘immerse’

*samHdho- > E. sand, G. (ps)ámathos, Arm. awaz, L. sabulum

*widh- > L. dīvidere ‘separate’, *weidho-? > Arm. gēz ‘fissure/cut’

*H1edh-? > OCS jed-inŭ, MArm. ez ‘one’

Skt. vrādh- ‘be proud / boast’, Av. urvādah- ‘*pride / *entertainment > joy / bliss’
Av. urvāz- ‘be proud / entertain’

Skt. khād- ‘chew/bite/eat’, khādá- ‘food’
Pth. xāz- ‘devour’, *xāza- > Kho. khāysa- ‘food’

*swaH2du- > Skt. svādú- ‘sweet’
*sH2aldu- > Li. saldùs ‘sweet’ ( E. salt, Arm. ał )
*swaldu(r)- > *xwaldur > *xwałtür > Arm. k’ałc’r ‘sweet’
*xwald- > *xwalz- > Av. xVarǝzišta- ‘sweetest’

One cause of this might be when metathesis created *dH- > *zH- > z-. If PIE *demH2s-poti- became *dH2ems-poti-, only oddities like d- > z- would give evidence for it. If so, the same for *Hd- > *dH- > *z- in
*H1dntyo- > Arm. *dH- > *zantyo > *žanyo > žani ‘tusk’
with assimilation of *S-y > ž-y, as in *sm(e)id-ye- ‘smile, laugh’ > Greek meidiáō, Arm. žpit ‘smile’, žptim / žmtim ‘I smile’ (Whalen 2024d). That *C-y was affected by change-at-a-distance also shown by :
*g^hrzdhyo- > *γ^arzðyo- > *γarðyo- > Arm. gari ‘barley’
in which no *g^ > j occurred due to dissimilation of palatals.

For *zo:tin > zot , *zo:tni: > zonjë, the -n- in the masc. seems to show that PIE *potin- ‘lord’, fem. *potin-H2- > *potniH2 existed. This would match *swe-k^uro- > Sanskrit śváśura- ‘father-in-law’, fem. *swe-k^ur-H2- > *swek^ruH2- ‘mother-in-law’. If so, it would be evidence that i-stems could come from *-in-, nom. *-in > *-ir. Thus, Arm. u-stems in *-ur > -r retain an old IE feature (Whalen 2024b), and pl. *-un-es- > -un-k’ would also be old (*bhrg^hu(n)- ‘high’ > barjr, gen. barju, pl. barjunk’). Armenian neuter *-ur > -r also appear as -u in Greek but -ū in Latin, possibly showing a uvular *R that disappeared in most, but lengthened the *u in *-uR in Latin with the loss of a mora. More complex origins, like *-urx^o- > *-uRH1 > *-ur / *-u(H1), are also possible. It would need to be optional, since Nikolaev relates Latin femur ‘thigh’ to Greek thamús ‘thick’ (2010: 62, also citing Nussbaum in fn 27).

Who remembers doing handstands on 'The Cage'?
When we were in our teens and the travelling funfair turned up to our village in West Sussex this is the ride that everybody would get excited about. If you had the guts to go upside down on it you basically earned infinite cool points. There was also another move which involved starting in a handstand position but then 'sitting up' upside down. Hard to explain. No-one ever put the safety chain on. Was this just at our village or did this happen across the whole country? I went on one a couple of years ago with my daughter (I'm 45) and the thought of doing a handstand basically felt suicidal. I can't believe we actually did it! Anyone else?

2024.05.17 18:46 er__primo__der__rafa COMUNICADO OFICIAL: CD Alcoyano won't be playing in Primera RFEF next season. The club has willingly decided to play in Tercera RFEF next season

In view of the rumors and falsehoods with which the City Council of Alcoy tries to hide its repeated defaults in relation to Club Deportivo Alcoyano, this entity wishes to state the following:
  1. Twenty months ago Club Deportivo Alcoyano was condemned to disappear due to a millionaire debt with individuals (starting with the players of the first team and their technical staff, but also with not few small SMEs and suppliers of the city) and the Administration (Treasury and Social Security), consequence of a terrible management that the City Council cannot say that it ignored.
  2. The economic support that Don Juan Carlos Ramirez began to give to Club Deportivo Alcoyano, allowed it to avoid disappearance first and then to comply with the requirements of the federation in terms of guarantees and guarantees to continue playing with a competitive team in Primera RFEF. Without this financial support, Club Deportivo Alcoyano would have disappeared.
  3. The entry of Juan Carlos Ramirez into the shareholding of Club Deportivo Alcoyano was preceded by contacts with the Mayor Toni Francés, who promised to maintain fluid communication and municipal support for the project, both in terms of infrastructure and economic support. In the first case, with the necessary improvements in the facilities used by both the first team and its grassroots football to train and play the second, by encouraging businessmen from the city and the surrounding area to support the club. Unfortunately, these promises were soon revealed to be false.
  4. Respect for the history and the fans of Club Deportivo Alcoyano has been stronger than reason and that is why, in view of the season that is now ending, we avoided taking a series of decisions that, at this point, are unavoidable to prevent the club from being at risk of disappearing again, to ensure its future in the short term and to face ambitious objectives in the medium term. Unfortunately, Alcoy does not currently meet the necessary conditions in terms of sports facilities to have a team in Primera RFEF, a formally semi-professional category, but in which teams compete that in practice are professionals, backed by millionaire budgets and that have at their disposal all kinds of facilities to train and play. That is why, as the Mayor of Alcoy has known for days, a solution has been sought that allows soccer to continue in the city, that Club Deportivo Alcoyano continues to exist and compete as such and also, that the three hundred boys and girls of its formative football continue to move forward.
  5. The aforementioned solution is to have a team in Tercera RFEF in the 2024/2025 season, keeping the Club Deportivo Alcoyano all its identity and history, and with El Collao as a field. We are aware of the harshness of the measure, but we ask our fans to have perspective: it is about taking a step back to gain momentum, not to incur in the mistakes of the past that led the entity to a probable disappearance.
  6. Last Wednesday, the City Council of Alcoy released a statement full of falsehoods, therefore, our entity is obliged to publicly denounce:

2024.05.17 07:17 theconstellinguist People Are Less Likely to Help Those They Envy, and When They Can't Get Away With Not Helping, They Make Them as Dependent As Possible as a Way to Level them and Relieve Feelings of Inferiority

Envy and Help Giving, Part 1
https://psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/2020-62974-001.pdf
One of envy’s instantiations is to increase, not decrease, dependence to keep someone down as a manifestation of malicious envy. They are actively disabled and kept dependent on purpose if their independence is especially aggravating to the envier’s self-esteem.
In this research, we explored and demonstrated a relatively implicit and covert means of undermining envied targets—namely, helping them in a way that retains their future dependence, rather than in a way that increases their autonomy.
Unfavorable social comparisons trigger envy in those who make the person about themselves (social comparison) instead of admire (just seeing them, for the period of admiration).
In the current research, we focused on unfavorable, upward social comparisons, which are comparisons individuals make with others whom they perceive as superior to themselves. These upward social comparisons often trigger envy. Envy is among the most powerful emotional forces of human nature.
Envy is based in lack circuitry, namely not having something. This is slightly different than fear of loss circuitry, so it is less about pathways of addiction which implies possession of the addicting substance and another about unmet desire.
In addition to being conceptualized as a dispositional trait, envy also is defined as a situationally driven emotion—namely, as a state that occurs “when a person lacks another’s superior quality, achievement, or possession, and either desires it or wishes that the other lacked it” (Parrott & Smith, 1993, p. 906)
Malicious envy entails hostile feelings, thoughts and actions aimed at harming the envied other
According to the first account, malicious and benign envy vary not only in consequences but also in feelings and thoughts, with malicious envy entailing hostile feelings, thoughts, and action tendencies aimed at harming the envied other and benign envy entailing feelings, thoughts, and action tendencies aimed at improving the outcome of the envious person (van de Ven, Zeelenberg, & Pieters, 2009)
Painful feeling of envy instigates malicious motivations
We primarily focused on help-giving behaviors, and we examined and demonstrated the notion that to the extent that the painful feeling of envy toward an upward social comparison target instigates malicious motivations, it impedes helping behaviors and particularly affects the type of help that is provided to the envied target.
Envious people belittle, deceive, victimize, sabotage and undermine those they envy. All around, it shows dehumanization of the envied.
For example, envious people have been found to belittle those they envy (Salovey & Rodin, 1984; Vecchio, 1995); experience schadenfreude, that is, take pleasure in their suffering (Lange et al., 2018; R. H. Smith et al., 1996; van de Ven et al., 2015); deceive them; victimize them; sabotage their outcomes; and socially undermine them (Duffy, Ganster, & Pagon, 2002; Duffy et al., 2012; Gino & Pierce, 2009; Jensen, Patel, & Raver, 2014; E. Kim & Glomb, 2014; Moran & Schweitzer, 2008; Salovey & Rodin, 1984; Silver & Sabini, 1978; R. H. Smith & Kim, 2007; Vecchio, 1995).
Increasing future dependence is seen as a way of covertly undermining envied target from engaging in behaviors that aggravate envy.
We add to this literature by exploring and demonstrating a relatively implicit and covert means of undermining maliciously envied targets— namely, helping them in a way that retains their future dependence, rather than in a way that increases their autonomy.
When family or friends do not feel that their envy is acceptable, they will engage in covert rather than overt actions that they think will not allow them to go detected as participating in behind the scenes antisocial behavior against the envied
Consequently, we postulated that following upward envy-evoking social comparisons, people who encounter malicious motivations may opt to vent these motivations by using subtle and implicit means to undermine their envied targets (Jensen et al., 2014), especially in contexts in which individuals are generally expected to help and cooperate with each other (e.g., among friends, family, colleagues in the workplace, or members of the same team). In the present research, we used the context of teams to explore such potential subtle undermining and malicious consequences of envy.
Envy is strongly associated with a threat to one’s self-esteem (Tesser, 1988) and is predominantly evoked when the comparison target is otherwise similar and when the comparison domain is self-relevant (Feather, 1989, 1991; Parrott & Smith, 1993; Salovey & Rodin, 1984; R. H. Smith, 1991; Tesser & Collins, 1988; Vecchio, 1995, 2000)
In teams that are expected to work together, teammates in envy of other team members will maximize covert means of undermining
Moreover, given that teammates are typically expected to cooperate and coordinate with each other (Holland, Gaston, & Gomes, 2000), we postulated that when working in teams, envious people may be particularly prone to vent their malicious motivations by using covert means to undermine their envied peers
The fear of being envied leads to people increasing a prosocial interaction style. This can look like “And we couldn’t have done it without you” in donations style language or the trick some have been told of when someone is jealous ask them to help you to get them accustomed to feeling on your side. Seeking dependency implies incompetence to the envier, which lessens their feelings of inferiority. This study discounted gender, but interestingly this behavior is exactly what women are told to do when men are being aggressive towards them, implying that what the men may be feeling may indeed be envy for these women
First, the fear of being envied often increases envied targets’ attempts to ward off the potentially destructive effects of malicious envy—for example, by increased engagement in prosocial behaviors (van de Ven, Zeelenberg, & Pieters, 2010). To that end, envied targets may opt to request help from an envious peer as a means to flatter and praise them. Additionally, by seeking help, the envied target admits to at least some degree of dependency and incompetence, which in turn may lessen the threat they induce. Indeed, recent research found that revealing failures encountered on the path to success may be an effective means to reduce malicious envy (Brooks et al., 2019).
Less friendly and less generosity is a sign of increasing envy
Indeed, the fact that Rodriguez Mosquera et al. (2010) found that one of the key markers of being envied is the envied targets realizing that the envious individuals are becoming less friendly and generous toward them implies that encounters in which the envied target needs yet doesn’t receive sufficient support or assistance from envious others do in fact occur.
By opting to provide their peers with dependent rather than autonomous help, individuals can overtly conform (at least partially) to norms of cooperation and helping yet, at the same time, subtly maintain the help seekers’ incapability and dependency
In our work, we studied effects of malicious motivations toward envied outperforming others on help giving. We predominantly explored the type of help provided, distinguishing between two types of help: dependent help, which consists of providing the solution to the immediate problem only and thus reinforces recipients’ future reliance on others’ assistance, and autonomous help, where the helper also provides tools that develop the recipients’ capacities and enables them to later solve problems independently (Bamberger & Levi, 2009; Nadler, Harpaz-Gorodeisky, & BenDavid, 2009). By opting to provide their peers with dependent rather than autonomous help, individuals can overtly conform (at least partially) to norms of cooperation and helping yet, at the same time, subtly maintain the help seekers’ incapability and dependency
Envious people can be confused as non-envious people when understood in this way. One simply has to look if those they help become more or less dependent to see if they are envious or non-envious
. In organizational contexts, it also can serve as a source of power because of the reciprocal obligation incurred by the help recipient (Flynn, 2003b; Thibaut & Kelley, 1959), make people look cooperative, and enhance their perceived expertise and consequent performance evaluations, thereby boosting their self-esteem (Flynn, 2003a, 2006; Grant & Mayer, 2009; Hui, Lam, & Law, 2000; Warburton & Terry, 2000). On the one hand, envious people’s self-esteem threat (Tesser, 1988) may lead them to be excessively motivated to help others in order to gain the above-mentioned benefits. On the other hand, when contemplating whether to help an envied outperformer who triggers malicious motivations, additional factors may come into play and outdo these potential benefits. As noted above, these malicious motivations consist of the desire to level the gap by pulling down the envied target—that is, to belittle and otherwise harm them. Relatedly, numerous studies document a link between malicious motivations toward envied targets and schadenfreude, that is, taking pleasure in the maliciously envied target’s suffering (e.g., Cikara & Fiske, 2012; Hareli & Weiner, 2002; Krizan & Johar, 2012; Lange et al., 2018; Leach & Spears, 2008; R. H.
People are less willing to help a superior envied peer than a neutral peer. People show clearly marked lower willingness to help a superior peer.Hypothesis 1a: People will be less willing to help superior envied peers compared to neutral peers. Hypothesis 1b: The link between the type of peer (superior or neutral) and helping will be driven by feelings of envy and the consequent malicious motivations toward the peer. Specifically, increased feelings of envy toward a superior peer compared to a neutral peer will lead to relatively greater malicious motivations toward the superior peer, which in turn will lead to relatively lower willingness to help the superior peer.
Autonomous help is better for the receivers and more expensive for the givers, showing that those who provide true independence for others have stronger altruism drives.
When deciding whether to provide help, people also may contemplate about the type of help they provide: autonomous help or dependent help (Bamberger & Levi, 2009; Nadler et al., 2009). Autonomous help encourages recipients’ independence by providing tools that enable them to solve problems independently, while dependent help, which solely provides the solution to the specific problem, increases recipients’ dependency and need for future reliance on others’ assistance. Although autonomous help is often more beneficial for recipients (Geller & Bamberger, 2012), it obviously entails higher costs for its providers (e.g., investing more time and effort). From the helper’s perspective, recent work by Nadler and Chernyak-Hai (2014) found guiders were more likely to provide autonomous help to high- (vs. low-) status help seekers whom they viewed as more motivated and as sufficiently competent to make use of such help. We, however, offer that this may not be the case when the help seeker is a maliciously envied peer.
Moreover, given that envy-driven malicious motivations are typically socially unacceptable, and thus often not explicitly voiced (R. H. Smith, 1991; Vecchio, 2000), these hostile motivations are most likely to be manifested in covert, rather than overt, behaviors.
Extending this notion, we proposed that to the extent that the superior envied peer instigates malicious motivations, envious individuals are likely to prefer providing the superior peer with dependent rather than autonomous help. For maliciously motivated envious individuals, creating a situation in which the envied peer is dependent on them entails benefits associated with preserving a particular advantage, thereby restricting the disadvantageous gap and increasing their impaired self-esteem, sense of competence, and schadenfreude (enjoyment of others’ dependency and inability). Moreover, given that envy-driven malicious motivations are typically socially unacceptable, and thus often not explicitly voiced (R. H. Smith, 1991; Vecchio, 2000), these hostile motivations are most likely to be manifested in covert, rather than overt, behaviors.
When possible people will not help a superior other. But when it makes them look like they’re not team players, they will opt to make the person as dependent as possible to increase control to lower feelings of envy. They do not show that they care about the lowered opportunities this creates for other people that might have needed that person’s success. All they care about is relief from their envy.
Correspondingly, we expected the malicious motivations to be more observable in implicit behaviors, such as the type of help provided, than in the explicit decision of whether or not to help.
By keeping those they envy dependent, the envier is able to highlight their inability and dependence to attempt to get relief from aggressive feelings of hate and envy.
By opting to provide their envied peers with dependent rather than autonomous help, individuals can overtly be cooperative and help while at the same time subtly maintaining the envied help seekers’ inability and dependence.
Hypotheses
Hypothesis 2a: People will be less willing to provide autonomous help to superior envied peers compared to neutral peers. Hypothesis 2b: The link between the type of peer (superior or neutral) and type of help (autonomous vs. dependent) will be driven by feelings of envy and the consequent malicious motivations toward the peer. Specifically, increased feelings of envy toward a superior peer compared to a neutral peer will lead to relatively greater malicious motivations toward the superior peer, which in turn will lead to relatively lower willingness to provide the superior peer with autonomous help.
People who are prone to envy persist unnecessarily in comparing their own state with that of others
People who are prone to envy persist unnecessarily in comparing their own state with that of others (R. H. Smith et al., 1999). Recently, Lange and Crusius (2015) suggested that people also differ in their propensity to experience the different types of envy, that is, in their dispositional benign and malicious envy propensities.
Hypothesis 3: People with more envy will want to provide less help, particularly when the help-seeking peer is someone they perceive outperforms them.
Hypothesis 3: Individual’s dispositional malicious envy will be negatively related to their willingness to provide help, especially autonomous help to their peers, particularly when the help-seeking peer is an outperformer.
Doing things for someone without showing them how it’s done is a way to keep people dependent and resolve painful feelings of envy
, and three items measured their willingness to provide dependent help ( .92; e.g., “When helping Terry with a work-related problem, that I am more knowledgeable about than him, I would solve it for him, without showing him how I solved it”).4
People were much more willing to help someone they didn’t envy than someone they did.
In these analyses, we controlled for benign motivations in order to account for the possibility that participants may have been more willing to help the nonenvied (vs. envied) peer due to increased benign motivations,7 rather than increased malicious motivations toward the latter.8
