2024.05.21 14:19 fundorin Thinkpad P16 Gen 2 (Intel)

I spent five months trying to find a working combination to enable advanced bios menu settings to make the laptop go to sleep properly, cause it's currently revving the fans and overheats in sleep mode, while hibernation (which I'm using) is taking minutes to both wake up and sleep.
FRN, q-p, f1-z. With or without FN, Ctrl, Shift. Several times. All combinations. They simply don't work with the model.
This is highly frustrating. I also used GRUB methods of changing the variables, obtained from the bios file via uefitool, irfextractor. Tried AMD methods, Smokeless, etc.
I've added new EFI entries with GUIDs of different BIOS sections to run them from the boot menu to no avail.
Tried patching BIOS and uploading it using software methods. Chipsec told me that it's not possible to write certain values without entering the advanced BIOS menu.
Nothing works. If anyone knows the right combination, please, share it with me. If you don't want it to be known publicly, DM me. I can either share it myself afterwards or not share at all if you don't want me to. I just want to get rid of the damn S0 Modern Sleep and use S3 Sleep State.
Thanks in advance!

2024.05.21 14:18 Only-saptarshi-7 SECURING THE INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT)

SECURING THE INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT)
IOT
The Internet of Things (IoT) has revolutionised the way we interact with technology, from smart home devices to industrial applications. However, with the increased connectivity comes increased security risks. In this article, we will examine the security risks associated with the proliferation of IoT devices, strategies for securing these devices, and the role of IoT in smart cities and industrial applications.
One of the biggest security risks associated with IoT devices is their susceptibility to hacking and cyber attacks. Because these devices are often connected to the internet and collect sensitive data, they are prime targets for malicious actors. Hackers can exploit vulnerabilities in the devices’ software or network connections to gain access to personal information or even take control of the devices themselves.
To combat these risks, it is essential to implement strong security measures for IoT devices. This includes using encryption to protect data both in transit and at rest, regularly updating device software to patch vulnerabilities, and implementing multi-factor authentication to prevent unauthorised access. Additionally, network segmentation can help isolate IoT devices from the rest of the network, limiting the potential damage of a successful attack.
In smart cities, IoT plays a crucial role in improving efficiency and convenience for residents. From smart streetlights that adjust their brightness based on traffic patterns to sensors that monitor air quality, IoT devices are helping cities run more smoothly. However, these devices also present security challenges, as they can be targeted for cyber attacks that disrupt city services.
Industrial applications of IoT, such as connected manufacturing equipment or smart energy grids, also face security risks. A successful attack on these devices could result in physical harm or significant financial losses. To mitigate these risks, industrial companies must prioritise security measures such as regular security audits, employee training on cybersecurity best practices, and implementing strong access controls for IoT devices.
In conclusion, while the Internet of Things offers countless benefits and opportunities for innovation, it also poses significant security challenges. By understanding the risks associated with IoT devices and implementing robust security measures, we can ensure that the promise of IoT is realised without compromising our privacy and

2024.05.21 14:16 Bordocklius Advice regarding virtuality

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone has a guide on how to properly use the virtuality ascension. I'm currently playing some determined exterminators that have ascended into the virtual world. I've taken cosmogenisis and am just harvesting organics straight into the synaptic laithe.
I feel however that I'm doing something wrong. As I understand it you want to have as little colonies and systems as possible, so i've been removing systems I don't need and after i resettle all organics from conquered systems into the laithe I just shut down the servers and keep to my small amount of planets. I find it very hard to produce the things i need however, as with my current setup i'm already getting -25% from the virtual trait because i have too many colonies. I was planning on shutting down some of the smaller worlds, but then I feel like I won't be getting those essencial resources anymore.
Can anyone tell me how I should properly play virtuality?

2024.05.21 14:15 SeagullAsh How to make/ manage money as a 16yo saving for a trip?

I'm not 100% sure if this is allowed so lmk if not!
I'm 16 and in y11 doing GCSEs, and after our A-levels, me and my friend (we'll be 18 and 17) want to go on a long trip abroad in Japan, so obviously I need to save quite a bit of money. Our parents will help, but I still need to save a decent amount to afford plane tickets, hotels, food, ect.
Currently, I get £10 a week by tutoring Maths, but the boy I tutor is not always available, so in reality I get only £10 every 2-ish weeks on average. I also volunteer 1h week at an after school club, but don't get paid, however, I might be in the future (y12 onwards). In addition, I have a work experience placement I may be able to do (my school still hasn't signed the permission slip despite me reminding them several times in person and via email I currently do not have that much money- only ~£200 saved, because I have a sugar and sweet buying problem, where I spend £1-3 3-5 days a week (This doesn't sound like a lot but it really adds up quick) and I also don't earn enough to afford such a big trip, especially since my friend wants to do lots of shopping in Japan, I want to visit as many historical locations as possible. I also (rarely) meet up with my friends, and often spend £10-20, sometimes covered fully/ partially by my parents.
How can I save more money, limit my spending, and possible increase my income through any part time jobs?
I have quite a bit of work experience (FOR MY AGE!!!) in STEM and with children- I have done 2 lab projects, tutor, volunteer at an after school club, used to help kids learn mandarin, and have also done many competitions in Maths, Physics, Logic, and Programming, and placed highly in all apart from the last, I'm fluent in Russian and English and have been learning German for 5 years and Mandarin for 7, but I don't have my GCSE grades yet apart from my 9 in Russian last year, but I am doing 12 this year, if that helps with what jobs I can do :))
Thank you <3

2024.05.21 14:14 Baptized_Bison Line chart always combines multiple times on a same date together

I have a set of data collected at every hour for several days and I'm trying to plot a line chart for it. But, excel, instead of plotting the chart for every hour interval plots for each day combining all hours.
I saw that I can 'fix' it by setting the axis type as 'text only' but, then I won't be able to use other options. I would be great if someone knows how to do it properly.
Please see below an example of my data and the final chart prepared from it.

2024.05.21 14:12 Jadovich Stalled Batch?

Hello everyone,
I started a 12 L (3-gallon) batch of traditional mead, on May 6th, with the intent to split it into 3 batches after primary fermentation and sweeten 2 batches to have a final result of 1x Dry, 1x Semi-Sweet, and 1x Sweet batch.
The original gravity was 1.139 and I am using ACTIFLORE® BO213 yeast that has extreme resistance to alcohol (18% vol.), so I expected the initial 12 L batch would turn dry.
Yesterday night, the gravity was at 1.023 with no more airlock activity: I added 1 tsp of yeast trying to restart the fermentation, but in vain.
I doubt if the bucket is properly sealed, causing slow fermentation and no airlock bubbling: I am thinking to rack into 3 separate gallons and monitor the batches for a couple of days.
Any thoughts?

2024.05.21 14:09 DistributionEqual367 Depression is not much fun

Before anybody says see a medical professional if you are suffering with major depression, I've really tried..... It's not always that easy. I do everything available to me for my mental health. I've spoke to medical professionals already. Noone seems to be able to help
I've been like it over a year now since some financial abuse off a so called sister, there's been much bullying from her. I honestly don't know how to deal with how horrible she is and how well she can manipulate people. I don't know how somebody can do something so horrid and yet still make out I'm the abusive one and actually get people on side 😥
The gas lighting has destroyed me. I want to get better but this has been the hardest thing I've ever dealt with in my whole life. It's crushed me and I haven't been the same since.
She used me good and proper when I came into some money, not a massive amount but she hung around me like a bad smell, when it was gone so was she. She was supposed to borrow money from me and pay me back in, installments.
I lent her the money for her and her daughter as she claimed she was running away from an abusive partner... Well basically as soon as she got what she wanted from me, she took my niece to another town and got straight back with him. She didn't spend the money on what it was supposed to be for either
Believe me I know all about coercive control but I also know my sister. She told me stories about him where In my opinion my nieces life was in danger and then went back to him?
So of course I rung social services id be an idiot to take a chance like that. Also told my sister she was an idiot and then she refused to pay me back and give things back to me she'd borrowed
I've not just lost my niece and sister over this, it's ruined my relationship with my mother too. I'm totally alone. I quit a job over it to cos I was always so angry and having meltdowns. I've lost everything because I let that narcassist back in my life but everyone was like she's changed so I was like ok. She hasn't changed at all
My sister has sent me to most vile disgusting texts, calling me fat, ugly, telling me I'm nothing, noone, I'm killing my mother, I'm faking my autism, I'm not autistic, I'm a psychopath. I know full well I'm not a psycopath, not even close but it's hurtful
I dunno what I'm expecting from this but I've tried reaching out to the police and everything and nothings being done. I've had therapy recently but it was pants (I'm in the UK btw). How do we reach out when we don't know how to form connections? Depression shouldn't last over a year surely
Sorry if that's a bit rambly but I dunno I need to let it out before I go crazy

2024.05.21 14:08 xGondowan RELEASE: Faces Collection V2 (20-05-2024)

Hi, xGondowan here again!
Work never stops to end this season and this journey with FL24. So in advance of the upcoming MegaPatch 2.0 (which will be released in mid June, with the start of EURO and Copa América) we will give you an updated Faces Collection.
CHANGES FROM V1
Compared to V1 we've made more than a hundres updates on faces, and also more than a hundred new faces from new players around the world. This makes almost 4700 faces with good textures, models and of course similar or exact hairstyle or look according to their latest appearances. No tracking of exact changes as we discussed on a lot of faces trying to choose the best one actually.
SOME SCREENSHOTS

https://ibb.co/fthJSZn
https://ibb.co/ZNcDSBn
https://ibb.co/C5vT4n7
https://ibb.co/gvYPtyh
https://ibb.co/hCwKGbj
THE FUTURE
We are aiming to keep this updated so considering that a lot of players will get some change on their look/hairstyle for the National Teams competitions such as EURO 2024 and Copa América 2024, we will release a V3 for that time.
V1 is now deprecated and erased on seeding on Torrent to avoid confusion. We suggest to use V2.
This time is ONLY SIDER version to avoid also confusion with the CPK version. With this collection you will have all the elite football with proper faces, so you can revert your SP official facepacks to their original 7KB files to save hard disk drive in case you don't want to have 12.000 faces (and you aren't seeing them all)
This collection takes up to 30GB so we aware of that. Referees faces also included.
HOW TO INSTALL
  1. Copy the folders "Faces" and "Faces - Referee" to: SP Football Life 2024/SiderAddons/livecpk
  2. In the "sider.ini" file, add these two lines of text:
cpk.root = ".\livecpk\Faces"
cpk.root = ".\livecpk\Faces - Referee"
  1. In order for everything to work properly, you must download and unpack the content from both RAR files.
  2. If you did everything correctly, you should have 4.641 folders in the "Faces" folder
DOWNLOAD
You have Google Drive links and Torrent options inside the RAR. GDrive usually gets blocked as a lot of people downloads it, so we suggest to use the Torrent one.
FACES COLLECTION V2
SUPPORT US
At last, we created little team to work on every aspect to bring you the most updated and versatile experience on FL24, until Dido makes his return. This means we work on trying mods, doing transfers, stats, overalls, tactics, mix everything up and test. So all this work is for free and non-profit, but you can reward us this effort by donating in this link if you want:

2024.05.21 14:08 MataHari94 Help with a sidequest based on character’s background

Hi fellow dungeon masters, I would like to ask you for some ideas on how to make a cool story from one of my player’s background. In short: his barbarian village was nearly destroyed by a plague which seems to be caused by some kind of lab rats (he found some marked animals and was one of the few survivors of this plague). So he went to investigate.
We create the world as we go with my players and do not play Forgotten realms per say so nothing is impossible but at the moment I struggle to come up with who could be motivated to do such a thing and I don’t want this to be work of some major villain or big bad guy. I also don’t need a fully fleshed out ´what to do next´. Maybe just a couple of ideas for me to use as a spark.

2024.05.21 14:08 reitirus I am offering two people 4 x 1 hour ADHD Coaching sessions

Hello all,
I have checked with the moderator before posting this, everything here is deliberately vague so it's not a form of promotion of my services.
Background
I was diagnosed at the age of 32 in 2014. After some initial improvement from medication, about three years, things just reverted to hopeless and a lot of the bad of ADHD somewhat turned my life upside down. I was in pretty poor shape from late 2018 until 2023.
Anyhow, I am Irish, but now living in Barcelona since late 2022. One big upside to that move was it's so much easier to get help here. Proper help from serious Adult ADHD specialists, and no real waiting lists to see them. I am now doing very well and have been for months, it feels very different living with ADHD now than ever before under their care.
I really feel for you guys back in Ireland, I really had such an underwhelming experience of getting help for almost decade before I emigrated, despite multiple attempts to seek it. I ended up in Barcelona over-medicated, fed up and at a total stage of denial about ADHD after giving up on it ever getting any better.
ADHD Coaching
As part of the new approach to my treatment, I was sent to an ADHD Coach by a psychiatrist, who was quite dismayed with how I presented to him considering I'd be diagnosed for a decade and apparently "treated".
I was so impressed and improved by Coaching, on top of my medication, of which I'm now taking less than before and doing much better, I decided to leave my 20+ successful and senior career in tech behind me and trained to become a coach myself.
So, I have left my job and have been working for many months full-time to reach where I am at now. I will also be offering Business Training and Consultancy on how employers can deal with ADHD in the workplace.
Coaching offer
So, after committing to this career path, I've reached the end of the formal learning part of an CPD accredited ADHD Coaching course. At this time, I am required to submit a video of a coaching session to go along with my test.
Rather than fake this somehow, I am willing to offer two people here ADHD Coaching, of four sessions, at no cost. To note, I have been doing practice coaching calls for a couple of months, but I want to do something more aligned with a real-world use-case.
There is a purpose to the four week period as one session is not enough to make any progress but it is enough to dig into at least one challenge in a comprehensive way. I can't commit to a full up to 10-12 week engagement at no cost though. That said, I will only require one of the four sessions from each person to be recorded, the other three do not have to be.
The sessions will be conducted online, at one week intervals and be one hour in length each.
Coaching focus
I am particularly interested in working with adults in the workforce, entrepreneurs and managers who are struggling to find their way with ADHD.
This is closest aligned with my own experience and interest. However, my only real "rule" is, even though I could and have trained to, I do not feel comfortable or could work with anyone under the age of 18 and will not be offering any services here in future.
With that in mind, while I will consider anyone over the age of 18, I may feel I need prioritise my focus area over first-come-first-served, if multiple people do reach out. I hope you can understand.
How to apply
If you are interested, please DM me and I'll send you a link to the website which is currently not published as I don't intend to advertise for about a month. I will ask that you not to share this with anyone.
I'll also outline everything including privacy and agreement, before going ahead with any sessions.
Thanks, Gary

First time trying this - Mamiya RZ67 - Expired Superia 400
Hello,
This weekend I tried to shoot 35mm for the first time in my Mamiya RZ67. I shot an expired roll of fuji superia 400 and overexposed it two stops. These are the best scans I've been able to get using an Epson V700 and the lomo digitaliza... I didn't use a backing paper as I've seen some people do.
Any idea on what causes these red sprockets? Is it light leaks? Issue with the scan? Fact that it was expired film and had trouble scanning it properly? :/ Any tips are greatly appreciated! :)

2024.05.21 14:05 the_ammar Defense for a Deadeye

so, probably last build for the league. instead of properly building out my coc dd inquisitor, I bought myself a nimis and progenesis and rerolling into some home brew shit.
coc soulrend of reaping deadeye
wanna go zoom zoom. tired of the stutter step from coc dd.
since everyone's using soulrend of the spiral thought I'd give reaping a try. and went for deadeye for the chain, proj, and tailwind. coz I can't afford a cdtailwind boot.
and backup plan if all else goes to shit I'd just roll into the pathfinder cwc soulrend
so what I'm not sure of is what defenses I should go with. first thought is some form of phys conversion, but should I do lightning coil, incandescent heart, cloak of flame. or should I force something like CI/aegis? that's a very popular option for occultist cocs and honestly people aren't taking the occultist's ES ascendency nodes anyway so maybe I can try to build the same way?
not sure if there's a more interesting way to build defenses on the deadeye.

2024.05.21 14:05 StyledSkill Water test help!

Water test help!
Hey Everyone! Bought a house that had a hot tub a few months ago, everything was going fairly well with basic maintenance. Last week I had an algae bloom, and did back to back shock treatments over two days. When I tested today, it’s showing Bromine results which is really confusing me. After the shock I added 5 chlorine tablets in 30 minute increments, and can’t get the chlorine to rise. Typically it only takes 1 maybe 2 chlorine tablets to be ideal. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated!
Attached are pics of the two products I’m currently using. Typically I shock once a week, wait 24 hours then pop a chlorine tablet or two to get where I need to be.

2024.05.21 14:03 BaskInTwilight If there are only a couple of published articles about a specific topic that covers nearly almost everything, do you still not replicate the experiment for your thesis although you use fairly different methodology or equipments for it?

Arent there some articles that just replicate the same/very similasimilar experiment one way or another and find similar to same findings over and over again but get published anyway?
If there are fairly less experiments and studies done in one specific area of research, is it okay to conduct fairly similar experiment and study on that same specific area of topic to publish article on it?
Do such replication studies not find a chance to get published in internationally peer-reviewed mediums?
How does that work exactly? What do you think about it?

2024.05.21 14:03 kayakero Smart Money Concept: The Inner Circle Trader Theory

Smart Money Concept: The Inner Circle Trader Theory
Surely in recent months you will have begun to hear about concepts such as Order Blocks, Break of Structure or Liquidity Voids, all related in some way to a new philosophy of understanding trading called Smart Money Concepts.
To put some order and explain these concepts with some clarity, shedding some light on all this mass of names, we begin here this series of articles with which I hope to clear up all doubts.

The Origin: The Inner Circle Trader

To understand what Smart Money Concepts is, it is inevitable to talk about the creator of this trading philosophy: Michael J. Huddleston.
Known online as The Inner Circle Trader (ICT), Huddleston became popular more than 10 years ago when he started the eponymous YouTube channel, posting videos in which he discussed his trading ideas, his approach to trading in the currencies and his vision about the impact of psychology on trading.
In case you dare to watch all the videos published by this good man from the beginning, I can tell you that some of them last more than 2 hours! Apparently, this long duration is completely intentional, because as he himself points out, he likes to leave hidden clues about his methodology in the videos, with the student being the one who must take the time to look for them and investigate them in depth.
Huddleston initially published all of his materials openly (in fact, you can find links to his old videos on BabyPips under the pseudonym System, although they no longer work), but he later decided to eliminate much of the original material and create a mentoring service in 2017, which provoked the ire of his followers, receiving a multitude of negative reviews since then (especially because he originally said he would never charge for information).
All this adds to the black legend that circulates in the forums that he managed several million dollars for a family of Greek millionaires settled in the US, to whom he lost a lot of money. In this way, Huddleston has become a quite controversial character, defended and hated in equal parts on the Internet.
But there is no doubt that, today, its methodology based on Price Action has spread widely among traders .

Smart Money Drives the Markets

The starting point of the ICT philosophy is that Smart Money (basically, banks and institutional traders) basically acts as a price manipulator, looking for large accumulations of resident stop orders in the market to make them jump and achieve its goal to execute its orders and those of its clients at the best possible prices. And, in the words of Huddleston:
Huddleston calls the algorithm that manages the markets IPDA (Interbank Price Delivery Algorithm) . The function of the IPDA is to manipulate prices in order to create liquidity in the market. Smart Money, which understands how this algorithm works, manages to take advantage of price movement by exploiting two aspects:
  1. Liquidity above/below old highs and lows. 2. Inefficient price action areas.
For all this, understanding when and where the IPDA will manipulate the price is the only way for the retail trader to make money, taking advantage of the upward and downward movements that Smart Money creates. And absolutely all the patterns seen on the charts, such as shoulder-head-shoulders or trend lines, are generated by the IPDA to attract retail money to the market. Thus, the correct question to ask if we want to make money in trading is: “ Where are the retail stops located?”
After reviewing a little what the philosophical basis of this method is, perhaps it is advisable to adopt a critical view (in fact, you always have to be critical with any trading methodology): although at first glance, the idea that the market is manipulated may seem seductive for many retail traders who seek to justify their losses due to this type of manipulation (how many times have we heard that: they have gone for my stop!?), the theory behind Smart Money Concepts must be taken with a grain of salt, since It is evident that:
  • It is unlikely that the price action will be generated by a single algorithm designed for it.
  • Institutionals play in a very different league to that of retailers, with the latter's volumes being too small to be relevant.
  • It is true that price sweeps and false breakouts sometimes occur, but this does not prove that they are necessarily the result of continued market manipulation.
However, and although the starting point of this method is surely wrong, one thing I have learned in trading is that we should never discard any idea, no matter how crazy it may seem to us (perhaps we are discarding the Holy Grail and we don't know it: P).

Fundamental concepts

We now move on to define some of the most important concepts used in the methodology developed by ICT and that we will use throughout the following articles.

1. Order Blocks

Order Blocks are specific candles that, when properly analyzed in an institutional context, can highlight smart money buying and selling. In particular, we will say that:
  • A Bullish Order Block is the lowest candle that has a bearish close, that has the largest body (that is, the distance between the open and the close), and that is close to a Support level. The pattern is confirmed when the maximum of the candle that forms the Order Block is surpassed by a candle formed later, which closes above said maximum.
  • A Bearish Order Block is the highest candle that has a bullish close, that has the largest body (that is, the distance between the open and the close), and that is close to a Resistance level. The pattern will be confirmed when the minimum of the candle that forms the Order Block is pierced by a candle formed later, which closes below said minimum.
Graphically you can see in the following graph what a Bullish Order Block looks like (the bearish case would be the opposite):
https://preview.redd.it/nzdsr5azpr1d1.png?width=273&format=png&auto=webp&s=96a352636e93174212567279d9d5b74418574caa

2. Imbalance / Fair Value Gap

The Imbalance or Fair Value Gap (FVG) pattern is a clear sign of market imbalance. To identify this pattern, simply take sequences of three candles and look for wide-range candles that barely overlap the upper and lower wicks of adjacent candles. That is, there is a price range in that large candle that does not touch the range of the previous and subsequent candle , leaving a kind of gap called Fair Value Gap.
The size of this gap is obtained by measuring the distance between the maximum of the previous candle and the minimum of the subsequent one (bullish case), or the minimum of the previous candle and the maximum of the subsequent candle (bearish case).
In the following graph, you can see a schematic explanation of what an FVG looks like within a bearish movement:
https://preview.redd.it/sho820l1qr1d1.png?width=956&format=png&auto=webp&s=7de12836a101c240c887985a6c258f853123b088

3. Mitigation Block

In this case, we are dealing with market failure structures, in which the price fails to exceed a previously established maximum or minimum. In particular:
  • Bearish Mitigation Blocks are formed when the market forms a short-term resistance, then the price turns around marking a minimum and then turns upward again but fails to overcome the established highs, forming a new high below the resistance. Finally, the market breaks the intermediate low downwards, closing below said level. The candle that closes below this minimum is called Bearish Mitigation Block.
  • In the case of Bullish Mitigation Blocks , the market marks short-term support; The price then turns, marking a maximum and then falls again but fails to break the established minimums, forming a new minimum above the resistance. Finally, the market breaks the intermediate high upwards, closing above said level. The candle that closes above said maximum is called the Bullish Mitigation Block.
Graphically you can see a Bearish Mitigation Block schematically in the following figure:
https://preview.redd.it/j7e4vrv3qr1d1.png?width=513&format=png&auto=webp&s=f7ab92f4e5f25c580726e6d4a7854f4769855705

4. Liquidity Voids

This term, which we can translate as “liquidity gaps,” refers to explosive movements , generally broad and without pauses in a single direction, that occur after consolidation, and as a consequence of the lack of liquidity for a given address.
These types of long-term movements are usually “filled in” later , with the price making a reverse movement that sometimes even manages to reach the order block prior to the explosive movement.
In the following chart you can see an example of Liquidity Void in a bullish context:
https://preview.redd.it/8ymm2w26qr1d1.png?width=768&format=png&auto=webp&s=8b5f319229a6dd89fc951e69a6d91959cae82611

2024.05.21 14:01 nikostiskallipolis Stoic ethics is not virtue ethics.

First of all, many things are good in virtue ethics. In Stoic ethics, virtue is the only good.
In Stoicism, virtue is an cause, only corporeals are causes, which makes virtue a corporeal.
“Virtue is an unshakable and consistent disposition to assent only to kataleptic impulsive impressions.” (Brennan, The Stoic Life)
By making virtue corporeal and the only good, Stoic ethics has separated itself from virtue ethics.
Here is my take on Stoic ethics vs virtue ethics (as presented by Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) —
“A virtue is an excellent trait of character.”
In Stoicism, virtue is corporeal, traits are incorporeal, so virtue is not a trait.
“To possess a virtue is to be a certain sort of person with a certain complex mindset. A significant aspect of this mindset is the wholehearted acceptance of a distinctive range of considerations as reasons for action.”
Considerations are incorporeal. For the Stoic, consistently proper assent to impressions is caused by corporeal virtue, not by incorporeal considerations.
“An honest person cannot be identified simply as one who, for example, practices honest dealing and does not cheat. If such actions are done merely because the agent thinks that honesty is the best policy, or because they fear being caught out, rather than through recognising “To do otherwise would be dishonest” as the relevant reason, they are not the actions of an honest person.”
For a Stoic, the adjectives honest/dishonest are irrelevant. The Stoic aims to act from the corporeal virtue, not from incorporeal statements like “I will be honest because otherwise I would be dishonest.”
“An honest person cannot be identified simply as one who, for example, tells the truth because it is the truth, for one can have the virtue of honesty without being tactless or indiscreet.”
For a Stoic, honesty is a lekton/incorporeal, not “a virtue.” Virtue is a corporeal disposition/structure of the mind.
“The honest person recognises “That would be a lie” as a strong (though perhaps not overriding) reason for not making certain statements in certain circumstances, and gives due, but not overriding, weight to “That would be the truth” as a reason for making them.”
A Stoic only considers whether the impulsive impression is kataleptic or not. “Reasons” are incorporeal, they can’t be causes for actions.
“An honest person’s reasons and choices with respect to honest and dishonest actions reflect her views about honesty, truth, and deception—but of course such views manifest themselves with respect to other actions, and to emotional reactions as well.”
A Stoic doesn’t need to apply the adjectives honest/dishonest to actions. Also, the Stoic doesn’t react emotionally to external actions.
“Valuing honesty as she does, she chooses, where possible to work with honest people, to have honest friends, to bring up her children to be honest.”
A Stoic only values the corporeal virtue, not incorporeals like honesty.
“She disapproves of, dislikes, deplores dishonesty, is not amused by certain tales of chicanery, despises or pities those who succeed through deception rather than thinking they have been clever, is unsurprised, or pleased (as appropriate) when honesty triumphs, is shocked or distressed when those near and dear to her do what is dishonest and so on.”
All those are emotional reactions to externals. Again, the Stoic doesn’t react emotionally to externals.
“Possessing a virtue is a matter of degree.”
The Stoic virtue doesn’t allow degrees.
“Further, it is not easy to get one’s emotions in harmony with one’s rational recognition of certain reasons for action.”
For a Stoic, emotions (pathe) are false opinions and disturbances of reason — disharmonious, they can’t harmonize with anything.
“I may be honest enough to recognise that I must own up to a mistake because it would be dishonest not to do so without my acceptance being so wholehearted that I can own up easily, with no inner conflict.”
For a Stoic, the only mistake would be to mistake a non-kataleptic impulsive impression for a kataleptic one.
“The fully virtuous do what they should without a struggle against contrary desires; the continent have to control a desire or temptation to do otherwise.”
The virtuous Stoic is no “continent,” he/she doesn’t try to control desires, he/she simply doesn’t assent to the non-kataleptic impressions that would create desires.
“Describing the continent as “falling short” of perfect virtue appears to go against the intuition that there is something particularly admirable about people who manage to act well when it is especially hard for them to do so, but the plausibility of this depends on exactly what “makes it hard.”
A Stoic would find the adjectives hard/easy irrelevant and wouldn’t use them.
“If it is the circumstances in which the agent acts—say that she is very poor when she sees someone drop a full purse or that she is in deep grief when someone visits seeking help—then indeed it is particularly admirable of her to restore the purse or give the help when it is hard for her to do so.”
A Stoic would restore the purse and give help while disregarding adjectives like hard, easy, admirable, etc.
And so on. The differences between a virtue ethicist and a Stoic are pretty clear throughout the whole article. And that’s because Stoic ethics is not virtue ethics.
