2008.03.26 12:33 Geopolitics: Geopolitical news, analysis, & discussion

Geopolitics is focused on the relationship between politics and territory. Through geopolitics we attempt to analyze and predict the actions and decisions of nations, or other forms of political power, by means of their geographical characteristics and location in the world. In a broader sense, geopolitics studies the general relations between countries on a global scale. Here we analyze local events in terms of the bigger, global picture.

2024.05.21 18:57 MilesDavis_Stan Latino trying to get in touch with my Indigenous roots

Hi everyone.
I’m a half Latino, half white mutt. I have always felt drawn towards native culture from Latin America, and I studied it in grad school. There, I wrote a major thesis on the concept of biocultural rights and “indigenizing” environmental law and policy in Latin America.
During this research, I delved deep into indigenous culture and concepts in South America, particularly Colombia (where my mom is from). I learned a lot about the concepts of “Latinidad” or “Hispanidad” and how they were created to erase the indigenous heritage of many mestizo people and Latin Americans as a whole.
Unfortunately, most mestizos in Colombia (and other parts of South America) don’t really have ties to our indigenous ancestry, as many countries made it a goal to assimilate mestizo culture into a “race blind” national culture, further separating us from our indigenous ancestors.
I don’t know much about my mom’s heritage, except that her mother’s family was from the highlands in the Andes and her father from a small village in the Amazon. My grandparents and mother have strong indigenous features, and I do as well but with somewhat fairer skin (thanks Dad). Besides ancestry, I have no cultural ties to indigenous peoples because it all kind of assimilated into the national culture of Colombia.
I have many Mexican friends who are proud of their indigenous heritage and claim it, but I feel weird doing that as well because I don’t know the peoples or tribes I’m descended from by name. I just know I’m mestizo.
As part of my job (I work in law), I worked with a few Native Americans who told me I’m their “cousin from down south” and it really made me feel something profound.
Do you guys have any recommendations for readings, podcasts, videos etc., that delve into this topic? Understanding indigenous heritage as mestizos from Latin America?
Ancestry and heritage is complicated, especially in the US, and I’d love to gain more knowledge.
Thanks in advance.

2024.05.21 18:49 Expensive_Pumpkin_77 Facing Thanos tomorrow! Matter of life or death , need help.

I’m a 16-year-old who just got my 10th board CBSE results. I barely passed math and got below average in science, but my performance was better than expected considering my tough year. Last year, I had two leg surgeries in October and December, which seriously affected my studies. I was very anxious before the surgeries and sick afterward, so I only had a month to study for my exams. My parents and I were happy that I passed, given the circumstances. However, I really want to take the non-medical stream, but my school won’t allow it. I don’t want to change schools because I’ve been there since 2nd grade and was looking forward to returning after lockdown. Other schools won’t allow me either, and my only option would be a dummy school, which I really don’t want because I didn’t go to school for 2 years due to my surgeries and before that because of lockdown. I really dream about going back to my school—I miss it so much, and only 2 years are left. A family friend, who is a teacher at my school, promised to help me get in despite my scores, but he backed out after seeing my results. My parents and I have been asking everyone we know for help, even my friend is trying, because other students with similar scores got into PCM without problems. Tomorrow, my parents and I are meeting with the principal, who is our last hope. I need advice on what to say to the principal or any tips to help convince him to let me pursue the non-medical stream. Any help is appreciated! Also dm if you can guide me through this.

2024.05.21 18:42 lonelysadkisslessold Rant - starting to feel the snobbery within the circles of piano and classical instruments (most classical music) in general

I’ve only just started, im 22 for context. I’m doing absrm grade 2. I’ve tried to join more piano communities in my area, and the rumours were upsettingly true :/
Very snobby and dismissive of late learners - usually unintentional (i hope). I feel immense shame around these people and it’s making me want to just give it up.
I’ve always seen instruments such as cello, violin, piano etc as very upper middle class to middle class hobbies - so tbh it’s not like i wasn’t aware. I joined a piano society at my skl before I started uni, a lot of the ppl in the society (including the head) would go on ‘society trips' to Taylor swift concerts and society trips overseas (watching performances in Tokyo and Poland etc.) - obviously things the average person cannot afford, yet alone a 16 year old, so the few of us who couldn’t afford it just ended up being left out and we stopped coming. This is when i realised the kind of money that a lot of these early piano/classical musicians had at hand.
I naturally understand it’s a middle class / upper middle class thing to have your parents invest in tutoring of any kind at a young age - whether piano or motorsports. It takes time and is incredibly expensive. Those with more money may even buy or inherit an actual piano. But even just buying a keyboard of a couple hundred pounds to encourage your child to start piano is still a lot, and a privilege I don’t believe most children have. I know if i asked my mom for a £200 keyboard because i wanted to start piano at 9 yrs old, my mom would’ve simply given me a 'no, end of' - as would a lot of ppl.
My mom has cried to me when she was older, saying she wish she could’ve afforded to get me in hobbies. We would often go to taster days (from dance to fencing to piano) as they were free, but we could never carry them on as lessons were just too expensive. Most frustrating thing is I’ve known ive wanted to play piano since 6 or so, but i wasn’t able to do anything about it until i had my own stream of income (so until i was 18). I’ve saved so much and worked so hard, i worked 40 hours weeks, brought my own keyboard, bought practice books, bought music lessons, signed up to examboard, spent hours on YouTubes looking for a suitable ABRSM guide during my gap year.
And now im at uni (not studying anything music related) and barely in, these communities don’t even want me around. At some point i was asked 'why are you even here?'. It was an informal session where everyone was trying out on the piano, i didn’t feel comfortable playing but they were chanting my name and encouraged me so i went for it - it was nothing complex as i wasn’t trying to impress just join in. I guess that set alarms bells off for them.
I’ve been blatantly ignored. most conversations are around what public school they went to (all the public skls in the uk know eachother for some reason). I’ve been sneered at for using a keyboard and not a piano (was unironically told to 'just buy a second hand bechstein, there’s looadds available'). A lot of them still have the tired out 2016 take ‘rap isn’t music’ - that kind of attitude. Idk im just ranting now, but i feel like I’ve hit brick wall. im being a baby about this but it’s a stabbing feeling, this just might not be a space for me.

2024.05.21 18:41 Aftel43 Not so dubious duo, part 19.

We take seats at a meeting table in the castle, Princess Jiakyn taking a seat first, then Seirialia, Tyrelia, Trenon, Lankensy and Kyrem, then the castle commanders who are quite surprised by presence of princess in their castle, and lastly Jakan and I take seats.
'Alright, explain then.' Lankensy says calmly to Princess Jiakyn. I wish I could have talked to Jakan about her before we sat down.
'Well, it took some persuasion for me to make the journey here. I am not going to just learn with theory, I need something to practice on and I have spell ideas that I want to try out.' Princess Jiakyn says calmly and in persuasive tone. Jakan and I looked into each others eyes for a moment, Jakan looks very concerned and, really wanted to say something but, chose to stay quiet.
'This is a war zone, and there is a good reason why there is a travel ban in this zone too.' Kyrem says straightly without hesitation.
'All the more reason for me to be here, the soldiers would need my presence, so that they know that their efforts will not be thrown away and that they will be remembered.' Princess Jiakyn states in honest tone.
'Do you really believe that you are ready to witness horrors of war?' Jakan asks calmly and interested to Princess' answer. For a moment she looked unsure and slightly insulted that Jakan was the one to ask the question, she looked at others present and even at me. She noticed that all of people here agree with Jakan's question.
'I do.' Princess Jiakyn says with slight hesitation.
'Bold answer, I know it is rude of me to question you, but, know this, I have already vowed that. It is either life, or death, that will carry on. I have seen those horrors myself, I have even fought and executed my own brother in arms. There are good reasons why the castle commanders and heroes of the riven war agreed with why I asked.' Jakan states, not entirely convinced but, willing to guide, guard, shelter, save and teach Princess Jiakyn, if the heroes of the riven war allow.
'How do you have such confidence in the words you have spoken? Ghaudunian.' Princess Jiakyn asks after glancing at all present here.
'As I am a Ghaudunian, I have good grasp of both active and passive effects of dark arcane on people. I have warred against undead before the war, I have seen the horrors, faced sorrowing defeats and lived through moments of triumph. Here, there is only death, life and struggle. One of the heroes of riven war, has met me before the war.' Jakan replies without hesitation and puts weight on his words.
'He was one of the groundskeepers of the Ghaudunian academy which I studied at. Draconian is a brave, stalwart and a dominant figure cast from metal and forged from war. Not many survived from the beginning, to the end of the war. When he speaks of facing undead, it is for your better that you listen.' Seirialia says with honesty.
'You have spoken well, draconian. Although, I have a feeling that my presence here is not exactly welcome.' Princess Jiakyn states to Jakan.
'Not only have we caused a diplomatic and political scandal, I do fear that the undead would make you a priority target to capture. These are not feral or dark arcane maddened undead we are facing, somebody is organizing this affair.' Jakan replies calmly and shows the maps. Princess asked for a confirmation from heroes of the riven war and castle commanders.
'Jakan speaks the truth, I personally witnessed his victory over a revenant champion. His sword is fine, as is his mind for war. Such a destructive figure of battle, are rare and continuing to survive. Surely one of the finest retainers of the shadowy ones.' Salgi states with respect.
'Not only is he strong but, also has knack for dueling. Tied with Lankensy before his victory in a mock duel. Ages like finest wine, princess. I know and understand your distrust towards the Ghaudunians but, in this matter. There are no nations.' Kyrem states with respect.
'What about you? You must be a junior agent.' Princess Jiakyn says heeding the words of to be her people, one day. She asks from me.
'I am indeed a junior agent, it is thanks to me that we know some specifics of who plausibly are behind this. Where my senior, is a cliff breaker, I am his eyes and ears, where he is not. I am new to the organization, but, our lords strongly believed that my skills would only benefit your nation's grand effort on solving this crisis, which is why I am here.' Speak out my purpose of being here to her.
Princess Jiakyn listened very carefully what I said. Closing her eyes to ponder, she nodded and opened her eyes again. That eye color has to be rare for people of Valerie, pink and yellow. Her physical stature, isn't ideal for war but, if she is at least one quarter of Seirialia's skill in arcane. She most certainly would make a difference.
'Alright. I will place my trust on both of you. I believe you are both here to help.' Princess Jiakyn says to me and Jakan. I feel mildly relieved, still, her presence here is double edged matter, I sense she is mildly overconfident but, worse is that she is untested. 'What are your plans for today?' Princess Jiakyn asks in her usual tone of, slightly confident and strong.
'We do need to escort the supply caravan to the town to the north and north west. Right now, we need mages that can heal wounds and work as secondary ranged units. Princess Jiakyn, may I request your presence at the town?' Lankensy asks, this would be both perfect opportunity to bolster morale of the citizens of the town but, also place a target on her back though... Lankensy looks into eyes of Jakan and I.
I think I understand his intentions, Jakan to act as part of the caravan guard and, maybe send me ahead to scout whether it is safe for the princess to enter... Smart man. Jakan ponders what Lankensy tried to indicate to him.
'From what I have heard, the town was in terrible danger previously, what has changed?' Princess Jiakyn asks mildly surprised of Lankensy's proposal.
Castle commanders brief Princess Jiakyn of the situation. Northern sectors of the castle to the town are pretty much back in control of Valerie. She smiles warmly of hearing these news. 'What about you heroes? What are you going to do while this is on going?' Princess Jiakyn asks.
'Kyrem, Tyrelia. Do you two think you can go with me to the town as escorts for the supply caravan?' Lankensy asks after thinking about the situation for a moment.
'This makes sense, we are going to need only good fighters just in case we get intercepted.' Kyrem says, Tyrelia nods in agreement.
'We are quite busy here already. The mages will provide a lot of help in healing these people, I need your assistance too, lady Seirialia.' Trenon says calmly.
'After seeing the slugging match yesterday, I agree with you, Trenon. The more we can help to recover sooner, the better.' Seirialia says, well, that's that for the plans of actually getting to know the heroes of the riven war better.
'What do you want us to do meanwhile then?' Jakan asks pondering how Lankensy is going to answer his question.
'I was planning on having you part of the security convoy and have Volarie check the town for anything suspicious.' Lankensy replies calmly.
'Hmm... Solid thinking. I wouldn't be able to avoid attention in a city. Are you okay with this plan? Princess Jiakyn.' Jakan says calmly.
Jiakyn thinks for a while. 'I do not have objections. When do we depart?' Princess Jiakyn asks somewhat excited to get started.
'It will take a while for the supplies required for the castle to be unloaded. No thoughts on what to do while it is on going...' Lankensy states thinking about the matter.
'How about getting to know each other then?' Princess Jiakyn proposes warmly and innocently. She has some ulterior motives that I can speculate but, no way I am voicing them here, I believe Jakan is thinking the same.
'Well, there isn't really anything else better to do.' Tyrelia says with content tone.
'All of the forces required for the convoy are being amassed as the time goes by anyway.' Kyrem says with a neutral tone, not being for or against the idea.
'A sound idea, I would like to get to know you better, Jakan. Warrior like you, along with the past you have had, must have quite tales to share.' Lankensy says, interested to talk with Jakan. I am guessing that he looks to learn, both history and combat from him.
Very easy to see from Jakan's expression that he is thinking about it. 'You have remained silent for the most of the talk, young agent. Is something bothering you?' Princess Jiakyn asks, warmly and calmly. I can see why people would feel warmly about her.
'At the moment, there aren't really any concerns. As the younger agent, I chose that, my senior agent handles most of the conversations with both of us present and back his words.' Reply to her calmly and partially choosing to elaborate the dynamic between me and Jakan.
'We do have the time since everything for today was already discussed yesterday. Princess, if I may be allowed to be direct with you. I would like to comment on your decision.' Jakan says calmly requesting an allowance to be open to her.
'You may say what is on your mind senior agent.' Princess Jiakyn replies calmly.
'I believe your heart is in the right place when you came here but, I fear for your safety of being here. As you already know, our most recent victory which has secured north east and north of the castle, has very likely escalated the conflict. I have strong suspicions that, once enemy agents in or outside of the castle find out of your presence here, you will be a high value target, which could swing this conflict into favor of our common enemy.' Jakan states humbly and professionally.
'I believe in my people to be wise to not choose such action, and that you agents. Will spare no effort in thwarting any action taken against me.' Princess Jiakyn replies confidently.
'It is just us two here, no more, no less. Princess, I believe I am stretching your willingness to hear those, once your opponents word's but, I plea that you will seek council of the heroes of the riven war when you are making decisions of where to apply yourself. Our combined presence most likely has already set the rumors running, which is my secondary concern.' Jakan says with consideration and caution.
'Your concerns are certainly reasonable, agent Jakan. Once the information of why you are here and involved with our war against the undead, such rumors should no longer be of concern. I will take your plea into consideration.' Princess Jiakyn says calmly, I quickly glance at Jakan, who is, not all that convinced but, fears overstepping his influence, so chooses to just nod deeply to Princess Jiakyn.
Castle commanders speak with Princess Jiakyn and after talking for a while. The private talk is over and we all go take our positions to be ready for the convoy's departure to the town. Lankensy and Jakan go to talk slightly further away from Princess Jiakyn, Kyrem and me.
She could be trying her luck on find out more about me than I am willing to share or about our organization. To my surprise, slightly to my own happiness. 'From what I have heard from my friends, your past was a rather ugly one, societally. I know some deeds of those whose name is Volarie.' Kyrem states to open the conversation.
'I remember reading about my name, how terrifying the weight of it is, certainly explained a lot of the treatment I received. What do you know?' Reply to him calmly, keeping my happiness hidden from him.
'A ghaudunian self learned rogue, who stole, murdered and misdirected Ghaudun in the past, to aid Valerie in all ways possible. This rogue was finally cornered by Ghaudunian guards and some army personnel, chose to take it's own life, than ever reveal anything to it's fellow countrymen. I read some about his exploits, what a scoundrel... Part of me wonders what part will you play.' Kyrem speaks what he knows, his face is masked by the whole head helmet he wears.
'Know that it will not be as anything grandeur as those who came before me, I intend on keeping the home I have. There won't be one like it.' Say with light seriousness.
'Your lords chose wisely to adopt you into their order, you must not have taken the news lightly.' Kyrem replies, referring to my blood, human and dragon in nature.
'It shocked me, part of me wanted to run, part of me wanted to very much not believe it... I had those rumors myself. When I was introduced my new part of my family, it changed me, in all ways, for the better.' Say with warmth. Princess Jiakyn looks confused but, I as expected, she realized quite quickly.
'You have blood of a dragon of Ghaudun?' Princess Jiakyn asks mildly shocked by the realization, even if it isn't all of it.
'Yes, it was a battle accident. We believe primary target was the one whose blood I share. I became a secondary target, just because of proximity. Investigation is still on, we do not have answers yet.' Reply to her calmly.
'I have read about the tales of those who have dragon blood, few even have written book or two. Variety of those tales is, as large as backgrounds and jobs they did before the discovery. You have blood of a shadow dragon?' Princess Jiakyn asks, tone telling that she is interested to hear more.
'I do. Never believed that something like this would happen to me, but, here I am. Ever since the day of meeting him, my life has become a lot better.' Reply in content tone.
'Volarie. I will be quite interested on reading what you have written of your life. Have you learned anything special from the mixing of the blood?' Princess Jiakyn asks excited to hear. Briefly, I smile cunningly to her and then vanish into a shadow before her and Kyrem's very eyes.
'Seirialia told me of your abilities, now, I most certainly believe her...' Kyrem says with slight shock and awe in his voice, as I just stand mixed into the shadows, there, but, not there.
'Learning from the artists and masters of dark arcane, most certainly must have helped. I have read about this ability but, never expected to witness it with my own eyes. Your life most certainly went through a great change...' Princess Jiakyn says with respect, awe and some admiration.
I appear from the embrace of the shadows and stand confidently. 'They most certainly taught me well, I feared the dark arcane, they taught me how to use it and imparted knowledge which helped me greatly to never again fear it. Now I dance with the light and dark as easily as I breathe.' Reply warmly and staying humble.
'You are still young, the best is, it is only upwards from here for you. Envious of you I am, I have only began to understand the other arcanes.' Princess Jiakyn says being open about her emotions to an extent.
'Know that it wasn't easy but, even my teachers admitted that they were somewhat surprised how I was responding to their teachings, even with the struggles here and there.' Reply to her calmly and remembering some of those times.
'It is the only arcane you are adept at?' Princess Jiakyn asks, somewhat doubtful of my words.
'It is, during the Riven War, many of the talents, both dragon and non-dragon were lost, one way or another. They said that, I have a knack for some specific areas of dark arcane, they would have been interested to see what potential I have with the other arcanes but, many of the shadow dragons agreed that having me here, along with Jakan, is the best combination.' Explain to Princess Jiakyn calmly, she isn't a child.
More towards late teens than young adult, state where her world view is growing far more comprehensive and more detailed than before. 'You grew up during the war. Didn't you?' Princess Jiakyn asks, most likely has deduced my age enough well to ask.
'Yes, it was bad, peace... Almost as bad. There are a lot of strong personal emotions, for now, I do not feel safe enough to tell you about them.' Reply carefully and making it clear that, it is a rather sore area.
Princess Jiakyn was about to ask but, Kyrem placed his left hand on Princess Jiakyn's right shoulder, prompting the younger to look at him, he shook his head in reply to the confused expression of the late teen. 'I believe it was commander Salgi who put it best. "War's monsters are not always fought at the front lines." Those are memories best shared in a far more less intense environment.' Kyrem states in straight tone.
Princess Jiakyn seems to struggle understand as her gaze fixates upon me. 'I do not understand.' Princess Jiakyn says to Kyrem when they seem to make eye contact.
'I am not the right person teach you about it. Believe in this though, she wouldn't mind change of subject.' Kyrem says calmly and let's go of Princess Jiakyn's shoulder. Interesting, royal family must trust Kyrem so strongly that they would allow that type of interaction. Princess Jiakyn looked quite surprised and slightly disappointed. I nodded to her, that Kyrem is correct.
She seems to relent, probably acknowledging that there are boundaries that needs to be respected. Thank you Kyrem, I do not think I am at all comfortable to speak about it to her. She thinks for a moment and looks at Jakan for a moment, who is talking with Lankensy. The two warrior's seem quite content with their discussion.
'How did you get to know him?' Princess Jiakyn asks as I look at Jakan for a moment with a small warm smile of happiness. I look at the princess and think about my response.
'First time I ever saw him, was when he doing melee training, felt quite intimidated and scared to talk to him or even be in his presence, so, I just left my melee training for later. Made enough sound for him to realize that somebody had entered the room but, left a lot sooner than what was normal to him.
The shadow dragons had found out about my avoidance of other members of the organization which were not dragon. They told me that, they learned from the war that, incoherent organization, that is not able to trust members within the organization is not a well functioning organization.
They said that, they will allow me to take my time to approach him. It was a lot sooner than later, they set up our proper introduction, relatively innocently. He is whole lot gentle than from outside he might seem to be. Now, we talk like we are life long friends. The draconian is most certainly is a veteran and fluent, of war and death, but, he can be a good mentor about life and peace.' Explain to Jiakyn who is listening very carefully, Kyrem is also listening.
'It sounds rather strange of you to word it how you did. What caused such a shift in him?' Princess Jiakyn asks intrigued.
'There is always change, that which we can observe, that which we can be, to put it quite bluntly, very ignorant off.' Answer to Princess Jiakyn, who looks at Kyrem, man nods deeply in agreement.

2024.05.21 18:35 RedmanWVU Southern Utah Fly Fishing Guide

Southern Utah Fly Guides
Looking for recommendations on fly guides in Southern Utah. I’m staying in Zion National Park and will most likely be fishing the Bryce Canyon area. Unless there is somewhere better. Based on my research so far, the Sevier and East Fork of the Sevier seem like the best options to catch brown, rainbow, and cutthroat. Biggest fish in the area too I think. Beaver River is also an option. I’ve talked to a couple of guides already and both have private water sections. One I know is on the Beaver, but the other won’t tell me which river it’s on. At least until I pay a deposit and book with them. I find this very strange. I get they wouldn’t share specific areas, but won’t even tell me the river? Up to that point, I was planning to go with them. Now, not sure I feel comfortable. That just seems shady. So, please let me know any guide service you’ve used in that area and also where you fished. Thanks.

2024.05.21 18:33 Changed-forgood Ariana’s Diet (TW: ED’s)

What/how little do we think Ariana eats a day to maintain her current state? I’m just fascinated by how someone, especially with her mental health issues & busy schedule manages so much with so little nourishment, I would feel like I didn’t have a minute to breathe if I was so deep in my ed but had so many obligations to show up for (which alone can be exhausting). I’m aware there’s all kinds of drugs/help she could be getting to stay up & running as she is, however, taking a possibly more realistic approach, I wonder if maybe she truly does just drink a shit ton of black coffee which can do the trick to an extent (ik my heart would be racing out of my chest, if I ingested the amount she does lol I feel like it has a higher affect on those w anxiety?) she probably is just incredibly strategic abt what/when she eats so she can keep pushing through her days, that on top of the fact she probably gets a lot of steps in for someone so malnourished (especially on set for wicked where she had to dance & run all around set) I’m interested to hear some other thoughts on this & what y’all think a day of eating (or lack thereof🙈) looks like for her! P.S. she is no longer vegan to my knowledge there have been numerous reports she confirmed it in a soundcheck back in 2018 although I’m not rlly convinced she was ever truly 100% vegan as she actively bought/wore leather bags & a horrific fur coat, as well all throughout this time period - lol performative much😭 as an ex-vegan I simply point this out to say, you never know especially w someone like her, she’s probably at least primarily still plant based / a pescatarian…coming from experience, however, she probably eats whatever she can that is most high protein/low cal in her state to stay this way w out dying essentially, unless ofc she has orthorexia, which could make it even more difficult for her to indulge in anything outside a v rigid set of safe foods….I say all this not to alienate her in any way, or those w ed’s in general, but as someone who has dealt w an ed similar to her’s & is looking to study nutrition/health, I am simply curious to hear some other viewpoints:) thankfully I am in the final stages of recovery, but I want to be clear it hurts my heart to see anyone dealing w such a hateful relationship w themselves, it truly is a disconnection w the self/soul:( I will also be asking ariheads in the near future & reporting back on their predictable delusion lol. She may be a shit person, however, this post is not intended to shame her for her ed in any way, simply to shed light on a topic I find fascinating in the aftermath of my ed.

2024.05.21 18:28 Fantastic-Style-999 I'm fed up with my parents, What should I do now?

As the title suggests, I'm kinda fed up with my parents. They seriously need therapy.
I'll start with my mom. She's actually really selfish. Since childhood, I was never allowed to go out and play with other kids. She says that I am allergic to dust and that she'll have to clean my clothes which are full of dust. I ignored her and played out few times but eventually gave in. I got immersed in mobile and the internet. I was never let alone to go out and explore like my neighbour kids. They used to hang out the entire day and ride their bicycle across the neighbourhood and to town. She restricted me to ride the cycle within my house premises. Then she never allows or gives me privacy. She always intrudes me while I'm bathing, changing clothes etc. The main reason is she treats me like a child. She tells me to do this, do that, wear this dress. That's not a big issue as far as I'm concerned. But whenever I tell her Im going outside, she takes the clothes including my inner wear from the cupboard even though I tell her I can do it myself. I think she has some disorder that makes her think she will lose authority of the house and authority over me if I start being independent. She loves when I ask her for help. And she advices me for 10-15 mins if I do the same. She does not allow me to iron my own clothes, enter the kitchen and do the dishes, prepare tea or anything that makes me independent. When I was installing my PC in my room, she interfered and said that the PC should be installed in the hall because apparently the Internet cable will have to be longer. I still don't understand that. I think she does not want me to have privacy. She also doesn't like when I lock my doors. So basically she made me a useless, dependant, introvert kid. I have done several attempts during childhood to break away from her control. I even went out to play with kids for 1 week when I was 11 or 12 but apparently my brother got injured when another kid accidentally rode the bike over his leg which was a minor case. She held on to it and permanently banned me from going outside. Whenever guests come to the house, she gets out from the back of the house and talks and deals with them outside the house itself. She rarely let's guests in. She hates when I say I'm inviting a friend to the house. She reasons with me that "The house will have dust and dirt if he comes to the house". Also, whenever we come home, she forces me to scrub the legs hard for the dirt or something to come off and wash our legs with soap before entering the house. WTF logic is that? We are going to bath anyways so why do that? Because of that she installed a outdoor bathroom/shower which is a small cube like thing outside our house. Also, she doesn't allow me to shift table fans, tables or anything from one place to another. My dad once did so and she screamed and shouted and she slammed her head in the wall herself as if in a sign of protest(I felt really bad and ashamed that day). My room actually has an AC which I don't want to turn on during racing season but she stops me from turning on the fan during that time and forces me to sleep with AC on. She's saying that when fan turns on, there will be dust in the room. I'm really stuck now. I can't go out, can't move things in my own room, I can't invite friends, My relatives and cousins don't come to my home because my mother will not let them in. Whenever I see my relatives and cousins they ask me "Why are you not going out of the house or letting us into your house?". I don't have an answer and it destroys my self confidence. I told her a lot of times to see a doctor but she psychiatrist but she won't. Whenever I'm in school hostel, I feel like it is the real me. I joke around, have fun, talk a lot but when I'm at home, I feel like a different person. I don't feel comfortable laughing, joking or going outside. The main reason is her. My MOM. I still get nightmares thinking if my friend asks to come to my home. I get real anxiety if they come to my home. I fear that they might dislike my mom's outrageous behaviour. Also I fear they will dislike me because I do not go out of the house and be independent. I fear that they will know that I do not have friends outside my school Circle (which the main reason is my mom). She also occassionally swears at me. Calls me bad words and curses at my dad. My biggest dream now is to escape this hellhole of a home and live in some hostel or room.
Now my dad. He is the biggest gambler ever. Not literally but I'll explain. He was born in a poor farmer family but he did a diploma and started working in Dubai. He earned a good amount every month and he built our house. But he got his biggest opportunity in Oman where he was offered ₹1.25L/month salary + Free apartment + Free transport + Free food + Subsidised School for me. He took the offer and we moved there. But after 1 year, he did a dumb thing. He took a loan of ₹50L and started a hotel business without even having any business experience. He employed 10-15 people before the business even started. The business was a huge failure and he lost the money. Meanwhile his company also found this out and kicked him out. I studied 1 year there in a good school but had to leave because of him. He lost ₹50L + Our livelihood in Oman. We came back to India and he got another job in UAE paying ₹2L/month but quit that too because his boss was upset at him at work. Then he got another job in Kazakhstan paying ₹3L/month but quit that too because of his laziness. He always believed he is born to do business. He kept saying he will because a multi-millionare within a year. He kept quitting jobs and now he worked in India itself for ₹30k/month. He then started a milk business which failed and he lost ₹1L. Now he started another Tyre business which is now running at loss. He also has a habit of spending money aimlessly. He buys random expensive clothes, shoes, phones, TV, Expensive chairs etc. He lost all his money on all of these. He does not have a sense of fear over financial ruin. He is now telling me that he'll sell our inherited land and buy a Innova Crysta. I have no words.
The only way we still are not bankrupt is my mothers small rental unit that gives us ₹20-30k/month. There is a lot more to say about my relatives. But that's whole another lesson. Any advice on what I should do? I have done everything in my power to make them right.
(Sorry for rant. Didn't intend this to be so long)
TLDR : My parents are insufferable. What can I do to fix it?
(I just passed out of school, so moving out is not an option. I'm also repeating for JEE near my house)

2024.05.21 18:19 fluffywhitething Antisemitism -- Etymological fallacies, and the history of the word.

Note: This is a pinned post on my profile, but I felt it should be reshared. It's an important bit of information that people bring up a lot when it comes to "But Arabs/Palestinians are Semites too!"
Let's start with dictionary definitions, all coming from Oxford Language Google dictionary. Editing to remove pronunciation guides, syllable markings, and an example sentence.
antisemitism
noun
hostility to or prejudice against Jewish people.
Semite
noun
a member of any of the peoples who speak or spoke a Semitic language, including in particular the Jews and Arabs.
Semitic
adjective
  1. relating to or denoting a family of languages that includes Hebrew, Arabic, and Aramaic and certain ancient languages such as Phoenician and Akkadian, constituting the main subgroup of the Afro-Asiatic family.
  2. relating to the peoples who speak Semitic languages, especially Hebrew and Arabic.
Semitism
noun
OFTEN OFFENSIVE
the fact or quality of being Jewish; Jewishness.
Semitism itself as a word is not often used, so I'm going to go to another source for that, The Etymological Online Dictionary says:
Semitism (n.) 1848, "characteristic attributes of Semitic languages;" 1851, "characteristic attributes of Semitic people," especially "the ways, life, practices, etc., of Jewish people;" see Semite + -ism. By 1870 in the specialized sense of "Jewish influence in a society."
(it goes on to define Semitist, which is irrelevant)
Now, a history lesson.
In around 1860, an Austrian German man named Moritz Steinschneider used the term "antisemitische Vorurteile" - antisemitic prejudices - to challenge a French Philosopher on his incorrect ideas of the "Semitic race" of people being inferior to the "Aryan race" of people.
Later, Heinrich von Treitschke, German historian would use Renan's writings. Unlike Renan who used "Semitic race" as more of a linguistic descriptor, Treitschke used it pretty much synonymously with Jewish. His expression "The Jews are our misfortune" was widely used by the Nazis after his death.
In 1879 Wilhelm Marr, A German man who created a pamphlet entitled (translated) The Victory of the Jewish Spirit over the Germanic Spirit. Observed from a non-religious perspective. In it, he uses the word Semitismus interchangeably with Judentum to mean "Jewry" and "Jewishness".
A year after his use of Semitismus he coined the word Antisemitismus in a pamphlet called (again translated) The Way to Victory of the Germanic Spirit over the Jewish Spirit. This pamphlet gained success. This is the first published use of the word "Antisemitismus" or anything close to antisemitism. In that year he founded the Antisemitum-Liga or League of Antisemites. Thus 1880 was the first year a German organization was formed specifically around the hatred of Jews and to remove Jews out of the country.
In 1881, the first widely published work containing the word antisemitem was published in the newspaper Neue Freie Presse. By the end of 1881 antisemitism and its counterpart philosemitism were already borrowed into English. Semitism itself had already been in use for over 30 years by that point, as seen in the etymological dictionary.
Now that we've gone through definitions and the history of the word antisemitism, let's move on to etymological fallacies! (A wiki link, just in case). Antisemitism is even an example!
When you look up a word in the dictionary, it's important that you look up the actual word. Sometimes words look like they mean one thing, but they very much don't.
"Ugh, I've had an awful day!" "Oh, your day was full of awe!"
Probably not.
"WOW, you made a terrific goal!" "What about my football game filled you with terror?"
In the case of antisemitism, you look up what it means under the "a" section of the dictionary. It's silly to look for it under "s". While it looks like it could or should be used to mean anti all semitic people, it simply doesn't. It means hatred against Jews.
Yes, words meanings do change over time. But that change happens from how we use them. People, by and large, mean antisemitism to mean "hatred of Jews". Semitism itself has mostly fallen out of use. But even that is associated with Jews.
Semitic and Semite are more inclusive. Semitic itself is more about language than any sort of peoples.
Just like we don't use "phobia" to mean "fear" in words like "homophobia" and "transphobia" in words like antisemitism, we look at the whole of the word, and not the separate meanings of the parts.

2024.05.21 18:16 Drafter2312 My Buddhist to Lutheran conversion story

Im (31M) an American but always rejected Christianity growing up, as i was forced to attend at a Presbyterian church despite my parents not even being diligent enough to have had me baptized (secular Presbyterian you might say?).
once i was an adult i broke away and didn't want anything to do with it but became fond of eastern religion after discovering Alan Watts. i think it was the ritual and reverence that drew me in. i was also extremely neurotic before becoming Buddhist so the practice of acceptance helped me a lot in my personal life. about a year ago i was approached by a Pentecostal missionary (his denomination was not made known to me at the time, nor did i have the theological knowledge to identify it in the beginning). He asked if i would be interested attending a bible study.
ive always been interested in history/philosophy so i took him up on his offer with the intention of just observing and getting a better understanding of how Christianity has impacted the world and guided the actions of our ancestors but no real intention on being converted.
fast forward 6 months and i had this really emotional dream, to which i woke up crying (i almost NEVER cry) with this feeling that all of my mistakes had been forgiven or that i was given a second chance at life. but that morning i repented and and accepted Jesus Christ as my savior.
at this point the missionary i was studying with said that i need to be baptized in water. "seems pretty straight forward." i thought, then he went on to say that i also need to be baptized in the holy spirit,, okay not really sure what that means. but i humor him until he tells me that i need to speak in tongues to go to Heaven. immediately this feels wrong. at this point i became interested in theology and determined this missionary was either Pentecostal or Assemblies of God. but he wouldn't openly claim any denomination.
At this point i suspended my bible studies and started just trying churches that were close to me going Sundays and Wednesdays. the first i tried was a ELCA Lutheran church down the road from me and everyone was so welcoming and kind. the church is relatively small and averages 70 or so members in attendance. and about 85% of them were likely over the age of 75. i continued to try about 4 other churches (non denominational, Baptist, Presbyterian, Methodist) but the Lutheran church service was just so much more impactful. i loved the old reverent music, the liturgy, the fact that we actually READ from the bible instead of the pastor choosing 2 passages then spending an hour telling about some childhood story that's vaguely related to them.
after about a month of church searching the ELCA pastor was the only one that sought me out to see how my search was going. he proposed that i come for 3 services back to back before making my final decision and by that time i was sure i wanted to be a Lutheran.
i appreciate how patient you all have been in answering my questions prior to this and i am looking forward to my baptism in a couple weeks.
God bless and Peace be with you!

Hi :)
I'm visiting Portland (I'm from Germany) in June for a week and hope that I can find some fun and kind people on here to hangout with or maybe even go on a small hike!
I was looking into Trips to the Coast or some Waterfalls on Get Your Guide but you can only do most of these with at least one other person, so if you'd be up for that as well let's go!!!! I don't plan to rent my own car in Portland because I have severe driving anxiety and driving in a different country would probably not go so well LOL so I was HOPING I could use Get Your Guide but oh well.
A little about me:
My plans for Portland:
I'm open to any recommendations!
Definitely looking for someone kind and fun to hang out with! I'm visiting like at the end of June and also arriving on a Saturday lol I'm definitely fine hanging out on my own throughout the day but would LOVE to have someone to maybe grab a drink with, have dinner with basically do anything fun!

2024.05.21 17:56 jennyngai Philadelphia Love Note: You Have Seen White Man Married to An Asian Woman. Then Why Not White Woman Married to Asian Man?

In the past, I did talk about why Asian women are attracted to white men. But here is a question, why not white girl married to an Asian man? Here are the reasons why in this day and age, it is time for non-Asian/white women should go after Asian man. Ladies, it is time to prove the point why you shouldn't be deny or ignore.
If you haven't noticed, in this day and age, white men would go overseas such as Thailand, Cambodia, or Vietnam just to get married or chase after an Asian woman. Not just white men, even single men who are British, Irish, or Swedish, they would turn their back on their race just to marry an Asian woman instead. Every non-Asian man have been giving up on finding singles in their hometown due to the fact that white women aren't the only ones in their department. I have travel with my boyfriend, so I have seen this quite often. But ladies, think about this. If your a white woman who has been seeing this "White man marrying an Asian woman" trend for awhile, then imagine what will happen if the scenario flips when you (as a non-Asian woman) marry an Asian man.
Another thing is we are living in this modern woke culture, where anything can happen. Don't get me wrong, I have friends who are in the LGBTQ+ community. And most of them are my bisexual friends. They also agreed on my personal perspective. Because if we don't change it now, then when? And keep this in mind. It doesn't matter who you married to, people would still hate, judge, or even criticize. So what? Who cares? As long as you have feelings towards that person, nobody can stop you, except you. Besides, even if you are bisexual or lesbian, and you are dating a same-sex person, most of the times people would give you side look rather you liked or not. That is why if I were you, I would rather let you judge me then not making a move. Because at the end of the day, it is your choice, not theirs. So ladies, you better step up the game and show that white or non-Asian men who is the boss and who runs the show here. We can also play the same game just like them. Besides, if a white man is willing to turn their back on your race, why not do the same thing, prove the point, and show who is the boss!
It is already the year of 2024, men and women should be treated equally; men and women should get pay equally; same-sex marriage for all; then why not "diversity marriage" for all. If you have lived in Philadelphia for awhile, then ask yourself this question. How many Asian man are living in Philadelphia these days? And if you think about it, if these Asian man can get marry easily, why there are so many single Asian man these days? And yes, most of the Asian man are introverted but you will never know if you actually speak to those American born Asians. Trust me, they are not afraid to speak their mind. So again, if you marry an Asian man, nobody would see this as a problem. In fact, this is why we called it "Proving The Point" to today's modern society.
According to statistics, how many marriages that a white man has failed compare to an Asian man in today's modern society? In fact, white man has something called white man privilege, so they felt that they could do whatever they want. That is why single non-Asian ladies should change the game also. One of the main reasons why Asian man lasted a very long time when it comes to the marriage because of their culture. When it comes to marrying an Asian man, they take it as like it is part of the family tradition. If you want my suggestion, I will say non-Asian woman/white woman should go after those American-born Asian man. Why? Because you would never see any cultural differences when it comes to them; they are obviously the better choice. In fact, you can easily tell if they are American-born or not. For example, look at their body language and English speaking skills. It is talking to the reflection of yourself in a daily basis. From my personal perspective, Asian man is less likely to cheat their woman, compare to the non-Asian man. And I DON'T say it because I'm an Asian woman, I say it because I have dated a few in the past. In my old scenarios why my Asian dating didn't go the way I wanted to, because I was too demanding on my Asian man, so they just had enough with me. BUT, in order to keep the relationship going strong, make sure to keep it well-balance and treat together equally. Not only that, regardless of their race or ethnicity, any man wouldn't feel comfortable of being taking advantage especially in today's modern society. I have learned my lessons in my days, so this is why Asian boyfriend is still with me to this day. So if you ever saw an Asian man who has these preferences: Don't avoid it, take your chance. You never know.
Finding singles are very difficult in today's modern society because of being overly cautious. Besides, nobody wants to make a mistake twice or scenarios that their parents went through in their good old days, right? However, if you are woman who wants to be overly cautious, make sure NOT to surpass over age 30's, because this is where any man would prefer woman in their 20's instead. Why? At least they would have a better "healthy" choice to have kids compare to woman who is around their 30s. Don't take it too personally, because throughout the history the king have ton of wives and tons of kids. However, would you as a woman have ton of kids with different husbands? It doesn't matter what time period you are in, because you will still consider a no-more-than-an average woman, if you know what I mean. Sorry, loves. Back to the point, if you ladies want to have a long-lasting relationship, it is so obvious that Asian man are probably got way better chance compare to a white man or any non-Asian man because it is according to the statistics. As I mentioned before, why there are so many non-Asian men who are in their 50s or 60s going overseas especially in Southeast Asia to find a wife. It is not personal, but it is the reality. In fact, almost every man wants to get married and have kids. For those men who DOESN'T want to have kids because they want to cheat you one day so these morons don't have to take the responsibility. But if you ever bump into an Asian man or any men in general, who says that "I want to get married and have kids" one day. That shows you that this type of "family" guy is hard to find especially in today's modern world.
Keep this in mind, don't expect too much that you will find a man who has higher income or higher standards. Because in today's modern era, women have been giving much more equal or greater opportunity than men does. They are getting paid equally or sometimes higher income than men. This is why white men doesn't seem to have any upper advantage compare back to their good old days so they went somewhere else to find love. So if that is the case, maybe it is time to flip the scenario and change the story. Like I said, if non-Asian man is willing to chase after or married to someone who is not their race, basically turning their back on your identity, then why not do the same thing.
Here is a simple question that I mentioned on my previous post, but keep this as a reminder: "Do you know that the majority of white men who dated or married to Asian women never last long compare to Asian men?" If you already knew this, then the best suggestion is go out more often. Places you can find a decent Asian man in things like Asian meetups, Asian festivals, or Asian food parks, you would eventually find someone you like there. And the best way to approach them is to ask questions like,
If none of these works, try to stand or get close to them. If they are interested, they will approach you for sure. Trust me, I have seen this sort of stuff before. And it is quite romantic. Another way to approach them is if the guy you are interested is sitting and chillin', you could just sit behind, close, or next to them. You will see if they are willing to talk to you or not. Again, if you ladies are smart enough, you can think of a question easily depending on the scenarios. And ladies, I have travel a lot in East Asia and Southeast Asia. So I will tell you that it is about time to make a change in today's modern dating world. If not, then when.

Oswell E. Spencer; Resident Evil, Based On Real EL-ites
There's nothing new under the Sun, & no coincidences in such things that follow;
Oswell E. Spencer
Coat of Arms
"I was to become a god... creating a new world with an advanced race of human beings."
Dr. Oswell E. Spencer, Earl Spencer (c.1923-2006) was an aristocratic British billionaire, virologist and eugenicist. One of the founders of Umbrella Pharmaceuticals, Lord Spencer was the CEO and President for its entire existence, which saw its expansion as the Umbrella Corporation over the 1980s as well as its bankruptcy in 2003.
A cold, ruthless elitist and ambitious individual, Spencer mercilessly eliminated his rivals and gradually increased his power within the company, which he strictly controlled behind a veil of darkness. Spencer had a vision to remake the world and lead it into a new era, seeing the world's current state as self-destructive. He intended to use the research data accumulated from Bio Organic Weapons to carry his vision out and mould a utopia for mankind with himself as its ruler.
Spencer was born into the prestigious Spencer family, considered for generations to be among the European elite. Growing up in his family's castle overlooking a cliff on the British coastline, the young heir to the Spencer fortune was given a wide-ranging education, and developed hobbies of art collecting and hunting as befitting of his status. Among his studies were classic literature, Early Modern humanist treatises, and the mid-20th century eugenics movement. His personal favourite was the Natural History Conspectus, a rare late Victorian encyclopaedia which chronicled a 34-year trek through Africa by British explorer Henry Travis. During Spencer's teenage years, Europe was plunged into the Second World War. Nothing is known of Spencer's life during this period of time, including whether or not he avoided conscription, though it is known his experience living during the war helped form his world views.
By the 1950s, Spencer was a university student training to be a physician. There he became close friends with Edward Ashford and an older student, Dr. James Marcus. While taking a solo hiking trip in Eastern Europe, he became lost due to his inexperience in the unfamiliar terrain and collapsed on a snow-covered road. There, he was rescued by Miranda, the priestess and biologist of an isolated mountain village which worshipped the Black God. Taken in by Miranda as a protégé, Spencer learned about the Mold and its ability to mutate, assimilate and replicate lifeforms, which inspired him a means to achieve evolutionist goals. Although he enjoyed his time with Miranda and the vast biological knowledge he gained from her, the two held very different world views, as Miranda longed to revive her deceased daughter while Spencer wished to change the world. Consequently, Spencer decided to leave the village, but would continue to keep in touch with Miranda by writing to her.
Returning to his university a changed man, Spencer became driven to replicate Miranda's achievements in his own way, as he deemed the Mold ineffective to achieving his goals. With the Cold War intensifying, Spencer began to view humanity as a race destined to fall, and believed that only through evolving mankind and attaining a superior moral code could this be averted. Though he lacked a means to accomplish this, he believed the answer lay within the emerging field of virology. Soon, Spencer formed a eugenics circle of likeminded scientists, including Marcus and Ashford, as well as Lord Beardsley and Lord Henry.

Founding of Umbrella (1966-68)

At the start of 1966, Spencer became engrossed once more in the Natural History Conspectus, having recalled an account about the Ndipaya, a West African tribe of skilled engineers whose rituals involved a magical flower which granted great power to those who could survive its poison. While Spencer was initially treated with appropriate scepticism due to allegations of yellow journalism on behalf of Travis, Marcus hypothesized that a virus could be naturally produced by the flower and mutate the consumer. This virus would theoretically hold great promise in eugenics, interesting the circle. In order to disprove or confirm the flower's significance, the three organized an expedition to West Africa to find it. While Spencer's involvement is uncertain, Marcus travelled to West Africa on a several month search for the Ndipaya with his protégé, Brandon Bailey, and returned by February 1967 with proof of the virus' existence, having isolated it within the Sonnentreppe flowers growing in the ruins of the Garden of the Sun.
Soon after research began on the virus, the Swiss university that Marcus worked for ostracized him following allegations of falsified data, which itself led to the cessation of government grants to his projects.\13]) Spencer used this to his advantage and employed his charitable Spencer Foundation as a means of funding Marcus' research, on the condition that he operate within the Spencer Estate's lab and avoid contact with any scientist outside their circle. Understanding the foundation would not be able to fund the project in its entirety, Spencer approached the circle in March 1967 with a suggestion that they establish a pharmaceutical company in order to raise the necessary funds. Ashford and Marcus agreed to the project, despite an overall disinterest with Henry and Beardsley joining.
Shortly afterward, Spencer informed his old teacher Miranda of the discovery of the Progenitor Virus, and decided to use the symbol that connected the Four Houses in her village as his company logo.
Toward the end of the year, work concluded on a mansion built on Spencer's behalf in the Arklay Mountains, a massif in the American Midwest. The mansion itself was built atop limestone caverns which Spencer planned to use for the construction of an underground laboratory complex that would be hidden from public view. The biggest flaw in this construction project was that he chose a famous New York architect named George Trevor, known for surreal designs Spencer admired, to build it. Upon its completion, Spencer realized that Trevor knew all of the mansion's secrets, including the existence of an underground laboratory, and panicked. Spencer quickly made plans to dispose of Trevor, so that only he and his inner circle would know of the lab's existence. In November 1967, Spencer invited the entire Trevor family, including George, his wife Jessica, and 14-year-old daughter Lisa to the house to celebrate the completion of the mansion. Unbeknownst to the Trevor family, Spencer planned to use them all as test subjects in his Progenitor research. Due to a busy workload, George could not attend, but told Jessica and Lisa that he would join them at the house later. As soon as the two arrived on November 10, they were dragged away by Spencer's employees and taken into the underground caverns as human research subjects for the Progenitor Virus. Jessica died soon after infection, though Lisa survived with mutations. As George arrived at the mansion, he was captured just the same, but escaped from his room. He eventually fell victim to one of his own traps and died. Lisa was kept as a test subject and would finally die in 1998.
At some point in the late 1960s, Spencer worked with another scientist who shared his eugenics ideals, Dr. Wesker. Believing that Progenitor would only be useful to mankind if they could be trusted with its powers, Spencer concluded that the genetically superior humans had to share his values to become the Übermenschen. Umbrella began abducting children with superior genes and intellect from around the world and raising them with access to the finest education that money could buy. Upon reaching adulthood, Umbrella would determine the cream of the crop and infect them. This highly classified project was dubbed the "Wesker Project", in the name of its leader.
With Umbrella established, Spencer became increasingly paranoid that his friends would threaten his own eugenics project which he intended to steer towards making him a god in the new world order. Although he already controlled the project by 1967 when he secured Marcus' research, Spencer's paranoia escalated in 1968 while running Umbrella Pharmaceuticals. To procure more funding for their eugenics project, Umbrella entered a secret agreement with the United States military to produce biological weaponry and began further projects to create mutant virus strains for military use. The Umbrella founders each worked separately on what they dubbed the "t-Virus Project". Rather than perform his own research, Spencer left the Arklay Laboratory under the control of trusted executives and further worked with Lord Beardsley and Lord Henry. Marcus and Bailey continued to work on their own while Ashford worked alongside his son, Alexander, at their European home.
With Progenitor cultures becoming too limited in number for large-scale research on the t-Virus Project, it became clear that Marcus and Bailey would have to travel to West Africa and secure more. Unlike the previous trek, Spencer instead hired mercenaries to force the Ndipaya off their land and secure the Garden of the Sun for Umbrella's own exclusive use. When news reached them about this success, Bailey was sent alone to cultivate the Progenitor samples at a lab built there, isolating him from Marcus. Marcus himself was given his own laboratory in the Arklay Mountains close to Spencer's own. The Umbrella Executive Training School served a dual role as both a laboratory for the t-Virus Project and as a boarding school for gifted children headhunted by the Spencer Foundation as promising new executive-scientists. The first true victim of Spencer's paranoia was Ashford, who would die from exposure to his primitive t-Virus strain in a staged lab accident. While his son Alexander was a scientist, he was trained in genetics rather than virology, and was consequently unable to continue his father's work. This left only Marcus as the main competitor to Spencer, and so efforts were taken to steal Marcus' data for the benefit of Arklay's Laboratory.

Securing of Power (1977-98)

In 1977, the Spencer Foundation headhunted Albert Wesker for a job at Umbrella after he acquired a doctorate in virology at just age 17. Sent to the executive training school, Spencer ensured that Wesker and a fellow student, William Birkin, would abuse Marcus' trust in them and steal his research data. At the end of the school year, Spencer ordered the school and lab to be shut down, cutting Marcus off from his research staff and the children he used as test-subjects. Wesker and Birkin were immediately assigned to the Arklay Laboratory to take over as its chief researchers and used their knowledge of Marcus' research to drastically alter the Arklay Laboratory's own t-Virus project.
Despite Spencer's near-total control over Umbrella, his paranoia continued to find new victims as Umbrella expanded to the point of possessing its own paramilitary, the Umbrella Security Service. Marcus continued to perform his own dedicated research into the late 1980s, hoping to use this to his advantage in securing the support of the board of directors in taking over the company. With Marcus now an immediate threat, Spencer ordered a U.S.S. raid on the training school and he was gunned down in 1988 with Birkin and Wesker in order to steal more research data. That same year, he personally backed their proposals in acquiring a Nemesis α parasite from France's No.6 Laboratory. As Umbrella entered the 1990s, Spencer continued to take a direct role in the company's affairs despite his advancing age and confinement to a wheelchair. Beardley and Henry would both perish over the next decade with their research inherited by their respective children, Mylène and Christine, both of whom were child prodigies.
Deeply interested in the newly discovered Golgotha Virus, which was being studied by Birkin and Christine in France, Spencer funded a new NEST facility in Raccoon City for the G-Virus Project. Although intrigued by the virus' potential use in eugenics, it was instead funded as another bio-weapon project for the US military. An alternative eugenics project was assigned to Dr. Alex Wesker, one of the Wesker Project subjects who Spencer became personally close to. Spencer awarded her with greater executive power through the construction of a laboratory at Sonido de Tortuga. He also developed a close relationship with Col. Sergei Vladimir, a Spetznaz officer whom the Soviet Union had used in a human cloning trial during the Afghan War. In exchange for handing his ten clones over for research on the fledgling Tyrant Project, Vladimir became a powerful asset in protecting Spencer's control over the company.

End of Umbrella (1998-2003)

In May 1998, the Arklay Laboratory was sabotaged by one of Dr. Marcus' creations, Queen Leech. Its entire staff was either killed or infected, and escaped B.O.W.s drew national attention in their killings of out-of-state hikers. As part of the X-Day contingency, Albert Wesker sent two elite law enforcement teams from S.T.A.R.S. to the mansion to investigate. However, unbeknownst to these S.T.A.R.S. officers, they were deliberately pitted against Arklay's escaped B.O.Ws for the purpose of collecting combat data. Wesker's own orders were fourfold: gather this combat data, salvage whatever research he could from the Arklay Lab, ensure the death of all S.T.A.R.S. members, and destroy the lab so the truth of Umbrella's responsibility could never get out. Spencer's right-hand man, Colonel Sergei Vladimir, was also sent in personally for the task of recovering an experimental Tyrant and Umbrella's U.M.F.-013 supercomputer. While Vladimir was successful, Wesker instead chose to fake his own death and hand the data over to a rival company, while several S.T.A.R.S. members escaped from the mansion intent on beginning a police investigation of Umbrella.
In the immediate fallout, an executive named Morpheus D. Duvall was scapegoated for the containment failure and began a bioterror plot to steal the viral samples in vengeance. Publicly, the so-called "Mansion Incident" did not harm Umbrella, thanks to its influence over the local Raccoon City media, police, and local government. However, a combination of this incident, Albert Wesker's betrayal, and Spencer's own refusal to admit Dr. Birkin to his inner circle would be the trigger for Umbrella's downward spiral. Dr. Birkin, slighted by Spencer's rejection, dumped the t-Virus around Raccoon City in order to neutralize the other Umbrella facilities while he himself prepared to hand the G-Virus over to the US military, who were intent on starting their own bioweapons project, in exchange for protection. Spencer learned of Birkin's planned betrayal and sent Umbrella Security Services to take Birkin into custody and acquire the G-Virus. When Birkin refused to comply, an Umbrella soldier gunned him down and the team proceeded to take his suitcase, which contained all of his work, with them. However, the fatally wounded Birkin still had one G-Virus sample left in his possession and used it on himself, mutating into a powerful monster in the process. The now mutated Dr. Birkin pursued Umbrella's soldiers into the sewers and slaughtered most of them, although HUNK survived. This altercation accidentally caused several t-Virus samples to fall to the floor and break, and infected rats would soon spread the virus into the city's water supply. Over the next week, the city collapsed into anarchy as thousands of infected took part in cannibalistic murders.
Aware that Raccoon City was doomed and the company no longer capable of lobbying against a Senate committee action, Spencer ordered Colonel Sergei Vladimir to recover the U.M.F.-013 from Raccoon City and take it to a safe location. On October 1, 1998, Spencer awoke to news of the US President's bombing of the city. By this point, Umbrella's responsibility had become public knowledge, and the US Congress voted in an act to liquidate Umbrella's USA branch and ban the company from conducting any future business in the country. In 1999, Spencer assembled expert lawyers, fake witnesses, and bribes during the Raccoon Trials to divert all responsibility to the US government. He also purchased an abandoned chemical plant in the Caucasus region of Southern Russia and commissioned the construction of a secret underground laboratory, which would become the de facto base of operations for Umbrella. Unwilling to acknowledge their breaching of international law to obtain bioweaponry or even acknowledge B.O.W.s in general, the US government remained in a stalemate with Umbrella. This stalemate ended in early 2003 when Albert Wesker leaked excerpts of the recovered U.M.F.-013 data to the court. Umbrella was found liable for damages and subsequently bankrupted. An international arrest warrant on Spencer was filed by both the United States and Russian Federation. Spencer, now an international fugitive, secluded himself in his family estate where he would spend the remaining years of his life.

Final Years (2003-2006)

Intent on establishing a future successor to Umbrella, Spencer was obsessive in maintaining what little order he had left. Right after the Raccoon City bombing in November 1998, he ordered a purge of senior executive staff to prevent the United States from ever learning about Progenitor.
Over the next few years, he had little to no contact with the outside, seen only by his loyalist bodyguards and his butler, Patrick. His increasingly erratic behavior coincided with his depression and failing health. However, intent on surviving long enough to see the rebirth of his organization, Spencer ordered Alex Wesker to begin research into a mutagenic virus capable of restoring his youth and supplied her with funding, equipment, research material, several hundred test subjects, and the research facility on Sonido de Tortuga Island to this end. Alex herself had no love for Spencer and betrayed him, disappearing after she gave up on the project and taking the results, her subordinates, and the test subjects to Sein Island in the Baltic Sea.
By 2006, Spencer was close to death. He lacked the strength to eat solid foods and spent most of his days sitting in his study. In a desperate last effort to survive, he ordered Patrick to assist him in the development of a new virus by using test subjects confined beneath the Spencer Estate in the hopes of healing his body. As these experiments led to several failed mutations, Spencer realized that his death was inevitable. He conceded that he would never realize his plan himself and enlisted Patrick to leak information on his location to Albert Wesker through an associate. Spencer then dismissed Patrick from his duties and was left with only his bodyguards at the estate, waiting for Wesker to find him.
In August 2006, Wesker entered the castle and brutally murdered Spencer's guards before heading into Spencer's private office. In their meeting, Spencer explained the Wesker Project to him, and why he himself was infected with a Progenitor virus strain*.* However, Spencer lied when he claimed he was the sole survivor of the Wesker Project, probably in order to keep him focused on his goal and prevent him from pursuing Alex. In general, Wesker was disinterested in Spencer's vision and, while not expecting this frail old man to be much competition to own goals, nevertheless decided to tie him up as a loose end. He brutally killed Spencer by knife-handing him through the chest, proclaiming that Spencer was not capable of being a god and, as such, never had the right to aspire to that goal.
Even before his death, Spencer left a dark legacy through the viral research that he conducted throughout his life that would plague the world with large-scale dissemination of bioterrorism. Due to his negligence in not being able to deal directly with the constant leaks and desertions of his dishonest employees during Umbrella's final years, this allowed them to start selling B.O.W.s to their rivals in the Bio-weapons black market since 1998 which culminated in the proliferation of countless outbreaks around the planet during the first decade of the 21st century, causing the deaths of thousands of people as a result.

2024.05.21 17:20 bignoseenergy I want to help my brother be less lost than me

My (23F) brother is 15, and is starting to feel the pressure of picking electives in school and thinking about what kind of career he wants. I was a good student in school and college and thought I was special and that I'd have a great life, but I never really worked hard on anything and now feel quite lost in my career. I can see similar traits in him - he studies for exams a day before and manages good grades, but doesn't really feel passionate about any subject. He was always really into YouTube and gaming and used to do it casually as a hobby for like a year when he was 12-13, and says that YouTube is something he is interested in. He also struggles with a bit of social anxiety and isn't able to always connect with people.
I want to help him understand and hone his interests so he doesn't feel as lost as me (as much as I can - I know everyone feels lost sometimes). My parents are always there for the both of us but I really feel he needs some new methods to guide him on a good path. Right now, he is just pressured and isn't able to stick with things. He is good at sports but his social anxiety makes him avoid those classes or tournaments that he wants to do too.
I wish I could work through my stuff and give him answers, but right now I just want to help him as best as I can without judgement or the pressure that would typically come from a parental figure. Any advice?

2024.05.21 17:16 Gloomy-Blackberry Is this a solid transfer plan? SWE

I'm looking at the SWE course and hoping to transfer in as much as I can. I'm following this post for which classes from Sophia and Study.Com transfer in:
https://www.reddit.com/studydotcom/comments/11gsrn3/brief_guide_to_transferring_many_credits_to_the/
I also took AP Bio in high school and got a 4 which is supposed to be eligible to be used for college credit. I'm hoping to use it for the Natural Science Lab requirement. But with Sophia and Study I would be able to have only 17/36 classes left to do in the actual course.
I have experience with frontend dev (self-taught) and I'm already learning C# so I expect I should be able to get through some of the actual degree classes fairly easily. I also did the Google UX certificate, but evidently, that doesn't count for the UX/UI classes :(
I have my spreadsheet I made a copy of from a YouTube video on going to WGU:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1mI02y_NRFr9EVH7gdZfZWgel58js453ZhJXKuIA9o7w/edit?usp=sharing
(^ it's view only)(Bold classes are for Sophia and italic for Study)
Has anyone else done this? Do y'all think it's a solid plan? I can be a little nervous so I need some positive reinforcement before I start things. I'd like to get the degree done in under a year.

2024.05.21 17:10 Think_Ad5569 Passed Power PE on first attempt

u/ZachStonePE
I am thrilled to share that I passed my test on the first attempt! I took the exam on 5/9/24 and received the results on 5/15. I am extremely grateful for the valuable resource that Zach has provided. I went through each of Zach's study guides and the NCEES study guide. The second half of the test was challenging, with more technical questions. However, I finished the 2nd 40-questions of the exam in over an hour and half. The code questions were very challenging and require great amount of time. I flagged the code questions and worked them at the end of the exam like Zach recommended. Once again, a big thank you to Zach for this well-structured course and his teaching style that makes everything easy to understand.

2024.05.21 17:07 tonyyaya7 They Came for the Schools: One Town's Fight over Race and Identity, and the New War for America's Classrooms by Mike Hixenbaugh Free Audiobook and Review

"They Came for the Schools: One Town's Fight over Race and Identity, and the New War for America's Classrooms" by Mike Hixenbaugh is a thought-provoking investigation of the complicated interplay of race, education, and identity in contemporary America. The book focused on a tiny community contending with issues of ethnic diversity and inclusion, casting light on the greater national discussion concerning education and social justice.
Hixenbaugh delves into the history and context of the town's battle, tracing the roots of racial tensions and studying how they manifest within the local school system. Through in-depth research and interviews with community people, educators, and activists, he creates a nuanced portrayal of the obstacles facing schools as they manage issues of racism, privilege, and inequality.
One of the book's virtues is its balanced and nuanced treatment to a very polarizing topic. Hixenbaugh gives different perspectives and voices, allowing readers to obtain a fuller grasp of the complexities at play. He doesn't shy away from tackling tough truths or challenging conversations, making the book a wonderful resource for anybody looking to better understand the current situation of education in America.
In addition to its investigation of race and education, "They Came for the Schools" also analyzes broader societal concerns such as political division, media influence, and the role of activism in molding public debate. By connecting the local tale to wider national issues, Hixenbaugh offers readers a broader perspective in which to comprehend the factors driving the fight over America's classrooms.
While the book is well-researched and fascinating, some readers may find that it lacks a strong narrative thread or cohesive structure at times. The sheer scope of issues covered can occasionally feel overwhelming, and particular portions may appear disconnected or undeveloped as a result.
Overall, "They Came for the Schools" is a current and significant study that sheds light on the difficulties of race, education, and identity in modern America. Hixenbaugh's engaging storytelling and rigorous journalism make this book a vital contribution to the continuing discourse over the future of America's classrooms.
