Recapping my ‘65 Fender Princeton
Recapped my ‘65 Fender Princeton after 30 years of ownership and daily use as my practice amp. Removed the death cap and modded the ground switch as a feedback selector, kept all the original cloth wires intact. Original pots, CTS speaker and transformers. Has 70’s vintage RCA 12ax7’s and Silvertone 6V6 power tubes. Old caps were starting to leak and it tripped my GFCI.

One year of daily wear
I bought this because it was allegedly the perfect GADA watch and it’s shined in just about every scenario. I wear it when I’m biking, doing yardwork, all day at work (basically everywhere just not at the gym) and it’s been the perfect companion. The polished center links absolutely pick up a ton of scratches, as does the bezel. But as you can see from the pic, they’re not really noticeable from a normal distance.

2024.03.16 10:17 ancientrestorer How much is too much for NOS tubes?

Hello, I am about to buy my first tubes for my first tube amp project (Fender 5f1 clone) and I'm looking for NOS 6V6GT, 5Y3GT and 12AX7 tubes on ebay. What is the reasonable or acceptable price for these tubes?
6V6GT and 5Y3GT (Sylvania, RCA,GE) range from 19 dollars to 50 dollars each. What should I pay maximum for these tubes?

2024.03.01 00:25 proconan1811 [WTS][USA-GA] [H] Quicksilver Headphone Amp + Extras ($960) [W] Paypal, Local Cash

Timestamp
SOLD
Hello all,
Up for sale is a beautiful, mint-condition Quicksilver Headphone Amp and extra tubes. This amp is unanimously one of the best tube performers at this price and even punches way above its weight. (See reviews here, here, and here). It drove some of my higher-impedance dynamic headphones extremely well (HD6xx, Verite Closed, Atrium), and gave life to my other planars (HE1000SE, Empyrean 2). This amp has been my "endgame" and I'm only selling as I recently side-graded to a smaller and cuter tube amp lol.
The package will come with:
All tubes were used sparingly (maybe an hour max, mostly to compare with my own).
The asking price of $960 includes G&S fee ($930 if PayPal F&F) but not shipping. The local zip is Atlanta, 30316.
Please don't send Reddit chat, I can't see those messages on Apollo. You can PM me here. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
Thank you for looking!
SOLD

2023.12.16 15:35 blackwalnut12404 Here comes the sun.

Here comes the sun.
Finally setting up the system in the new house.
For the tube rollers out there, the C22 is currently running RCA long plates from 1951 on LL and NOS Sovteks on the MM & MC, though I don't use them as much as I'd like to. The RCA's are just getting broken in and I dare say I think I like them better the Genalex Gold Lions Gold Pins I had been running for awhile.
The MC 275s are currently running KT88 Genalex Gold Lion Reissues, with NOS 12AT7 Mullards (1982) and NOS 12AX7 TungSols. Definitely my favorite setup to date.
If anyone has a similar setup and wants to trade notes on tubes (or potentially tubes) I have amassed quite the collection over the years and would love to chat - just DM me.

Help with Recording an organ
My neighbor was giving away an organ (Baldwin rx220), and I picked it up and saw it had midi as well as an RCA mono out possibly? Any tips on getting something like this to work with a synth setup? Ordered a mono rca cable as I hadnt had one before so waiting on that hoping to get a signal from the out. Otherwise it works great and seems like a nice addition to my music room. No idea how old it is.

2023.11.09 21:42 dendrocloud New Amp Day: March Audio p422

New Amp Day: March Audio p422
My new March Audio p422 arrived today.
The rest of my system: Technics Sl-1210g Hana ML EAT E-Glo Petit Phono Stage with 1959 Baldwin branded Raytheon 12AX7's Vincent Audio SA-32 preamp Mirage OMD-28's
This is replacing an Emotiva XPA-200 that I have had about a decade.
So far so good. Feels like an upgrade, I expect it will sound even better over the next month. It was between this and the NAD M23. I was able to audition the NAD, but not the March Audio. I decided to roll the dice on the p422 anyway. I was intrigued by the measurements and the insane damping factor.
After only an hour of listening, I have no regrets. It is freakishly transparent.

2023.07.26 03:35 Django_Un_Cheesed Shit or Schiit? Lyr + Odysseys (What are you rolling / driving?)

Tell me your experience with the Lyr + (or any other Schiit valve headphone amp for that matter). Headphones, Valves, Speakers, subjective sound preferences. Be kind, leave your ego at the door!
I just received my tax return, and have made an executive decision to drop $1000 AUD on a Schiit Lyr + direct from Schiit. (Local “Authorised Reseller” sells them for $1249!) Opting for no tube from Schiit, I threw $400 AUD to Grant Fidelity for their 6SN7 GF SE “bulb” valve, the highest selection of a custom batch design collaboration between Grant Fidelity (Canada) and China’s highly respected state owned manufacturer ShuGuang.
Before I buy anything, I go nuts researching reviews and the tech for weeks before I drop serious coinage. Cheap Audio Man “Randy” praised the Lyr+ (is he a shill? Dunno, I like him though).
I already enjoy tubes in my RIAA Phono setup, 2x 12AX7 of PSVane (China) origin.
When the Lyr + arrives, I’ll have my phono stage fed into the Lyr, along with my PC audio via RCA, and of course with the Pre-Out as well, I can also run my phono (or PC) to my JBL 4311s to see if there’s any improvement from the Lyr + Special Edition GF tube.
So, while I wait, I look forward to reading about people’s Schitty experiences with their Lyr (or whatever your Schiit’s called).

2023.07.11 02:58 dendrocloud New tube day! 1960 Baldwin Raytheon long black plates

I replaced the stock tubes in my EAT E-Glo Petit Phono stage with a pair of Baldwin Raytheon long black plate 12ax7's. It is the biggest improvement from changing a single component that I have ever experienced, even bigger than going from a Sumiko Moonstone to a Hana ML. I did not expect that.
A few months ago, I replaced my Vincent PHO-701 phono stage, that had a Brimar NOS tube, with an EAT E-Glo Petit because I was having RFI problems. The EAT was dead quiet, had great dynamics and fixed the RF issue, but my wife complained that the instruments no longer sounded 'live' in our room.
So, I rolled the dice I some used 1960 Baldwin labeled Raytheon long black plate 12ax7's. They arrived today. Pit them in, and started playing records with no warm up. The difference was amazing. I am still buzzing from the excitement. The soundstage is massive and vocals have so much texture, but the biggest difference so far is guitar. My wife discribes it as extra plucky.
I just had to tell some people that would understand. What a day!

2023.07.03 16:54 nibw43 NAD: HH Scott 340b

NAD: HH Scott 340b
Wonderful find and great deal based on channel imbalance. Cleaned pots, tube sockets, tested all tubes, rebased, refreshed, sounds wonderful. Fixed the balance issue. In many ways better than my ST-70/Pas 3x combo. Large open sound-stage sounds so good on recordings with room mic placement, orchestras and certainly reverbs. Luckily electrolytics have been changed. I did swap some RCA 7025s for the V1, V2 and Baldwin 12AX7s for V101, V102. My only concern is the balance adjustment between pairs, is there an easy way to do that with a multimeter?

Tube ID help
Came from a box with 2 other groove tube 12AX7's, I can make out "RCA" (A is worn off), "8K2 USA", and "MNH". There was also a GG or G6, but I think I may have worn it off further just by wiping it down. TIA

2023.05.10 00:54 ActionLonson48 [QUESTION] - Ampeg Gemini ii G15 - New Tubes

Hey all!
First thing, I'm very new to "tubes" but I've been laying on them for years. I was too young to really acknowledge what they can do. I've got an old Ampeg Gemini ii G15 that I've acquired over the years and a Marshall JCM2000 which just blew so I'm down to my Ampeg. The previous owner put some interesting tubes in there but I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for new tubes!
I heard EH makes some decent ones for Ampeg and there's also Fliptops. I usually play through my DAW/interface for practice but now that my band's starting to gig, I wanted to dive into my amps and see how I can improve my tone. I mainly play hard rock/metal/heavy metal.
Here's what's currently in there: Tubes from left to right looking from the back
RCA 6L6 GC
ECA 6L6 GC
AMPEG AEF 652
RCA 12AX7A
AMPEREX 12AX7 ECCU3 634
AMPEG 6CG7/6FQ7BY 726
AMPEREX 12AX7 ECCU3 634
I really wanna get a Mesa Boogie down the line but I would love to make this one work for me in the meantime!
Thank you!
