I'm looking at the possibility of doing a cruise in the South Pacific on NCL. It's 14 days in and around the islands starting in Fiji. After I learned the name of this ship is the Sun, I started digging to learn more about the ship. I understand it's older and was refurbished in 2018. No biggie there.
I saw review after review stating the smell of sewage could be smelled throughout the entire ship, including eating areas. I can do old, but I can't handle the smell of sewage for 5 minutes, nevermind for 2 weeks.
Then I read several reviews that mentioned the carpets are soaking wet in the halls and cabins and people were just get moved from a bad cabin to worse cabins with more water issues. This is also a deal breaker for us.
I read lots of good reviews but the idea of sewage smells and wet carpets is really deterring me from looking any further into this cruise.
Has anyone been on the Sun ship recently? Are the sewage smells and soaked carpet claims legit?

Over the weekend some friends and I played our first ever mythic one shot and someone was using mythic vital strike. This got us talking generally about rolling lots of dice but I just couldn’t let it go, so here we are
First I am not going to ever play this build, parts of it maybe but this is 100% theory crafting. It’s also not about doing the most damage OR being consistent, I just want to be able roll a literal mountain of dice in a single attack… probably only once.
Here’s the build
Half-ork (as long as we are humanoid I don’t think race matters too much so we’re going half orc to save on a feat)
Synthesist summoner 7 (for huge size)
Titan fighter 1 (for oversized weapons)
Rogue 14 (reduce feats spent on sneak attack, other classes may work better)
Required Feats:
Vital strike
Improved vital strike
Greater vital strike
Accomplished sneak attacker x 3
Required Mythic abilities

Bloody streak

We can oversize it with titan fighter, then impact weapon and lead blades (depending on how your dm rules that those last two interact) gets us to colossal +3. Now there are no tables that go past colossal damage however following the pattern that would take us to:

Greater vital strike takes us up a lot:

14 levels of rogue and 3 accomplished sneak attacker nets us another 10d6. Bloody streak can up that to 20 (I never said this was realistic) and precision critical doubles that on a crit.

I personally don’t think mythic vital strike is super clear on how it would interact with precision critical so I have just rolled the initial 20d6 4 times then added the additional 20d6 from precision crit on top.

I’ve kept the weapon enhancements out to make it simpler up to now but let’s add them in. Bane, shock, flaming, cold and acid are all x4 from mythic improved vital strike, Shocking burst x 4 from crit multiplier.

 | Hi there! This one really has me stumped. I've had this type of plant for years with no problems and these are 3 cuttings from the original, all rooted and over a year old. They had been in small clear bowls with water until I recently put them in dirt about 2 weeks ago. Now this is what has be stumped, the closest one is a darker green and just Droopy, soft texture and definitely not under watered as it was like this in the small water bowl, I did change this one into dirt before the other two because of the drooping but it didn't do anything but make it dark green. Now two weeks in this new pot, the other two are looking really happy but this one won't budge. I've also tried putting it outside and getting some sun but it's like it need antidepressants. Hello, my 11 months old daughter had been touching/grabbing her toes of both feet for 2 weeks while playing or sitting. We noticed few days ago that she skin under her right big toe was peeling off. We applied coconut oil to moisturize. We now see that all of her right foot toes are slightly swollen compare to the left ones.
She looks disturbed by it mostly when she's about to sleep when I rock her and when she is in the baby carrier. She keep rubbing, swings her feet (both) and cries 😭 She doesn't show any pain when we gently press her toes/foot. She has no fever.
We live in a hot climate, she has never used any shoes and never wear socks. Always barefoot. She is crawling and not walking yet but standing. It doesn't affect her mobility.
She's also sometimes rubbing her hands and arm's.

- We were first thinking it could be eczema (she has some on her belly) but the skin really shows nothing there.
- Then we thought maybe she played with our cat and got scratched (there is a tiny bit dot between her big and second toe, that could be a claw mark).
- Can it be a little piece of glass or wood stuck inside her skin that should could have gotten while crawling? This morning the little dot I previously talked about was looking more red and raised. How can she check if she has something in her skin?
- Now I'm thinking could it be water retention? But it's weird because only one foot. She's chubby so we can't tell if her ankles are swollen too or not.
She's also sometimes rubbing her hands and arm's.

Location: Newfoundland, Canada, so harsh winters, lots of snow, freezing rain is common, and often wet conditions in general, though we do get a few months of good sun in the summer. The back deck does get pretty toasty.
Pretty new to deck maintenance, although I do have some experience with wooden boat decks and other wood maintenance.
TLDR: looking for advice on what products would work best here with easy (doesn't necessarily have to be fast) maintenance for years to come. I'm totally fine with the idea of yearly preventative maintenance, hoping to avoid busting out a sander of some sort all the time though. Not looking to paint, minimal coloring is ok. Leaning towards oils? Pressure washer is available, sanding if it is a must. Understand initial prep is key, and if base coating means sanding, not an issue. The main thing I'm looking for is easy maintenance down the line. Not afraid of reapplications.
Full story: We just purchased a house with this deck and pool. We don't think the previous owner treated the deck in anyway based on how it looks? I'm unsure of the wood type. We are not certain how old the deck is, best guess is less than 5 years. The deck has some inlaid lighting, they work, we like them, so whatever we do, it has to keep them in mind.
As a side note, I have experience maintaining decks on wooden boats, but that's somewhat different than what we have here, as I can't exactly pickle it with salt water, sadly haha. But I like the idea of being able to use a stiff bristle brush once or twice a year, and maybe a pressure wash, then reapply the product to bolster the base.
Looking for something that will look fairly good, but is easy to maintain and won't peel or do weird things, causing us to have to sand it all back down to refinish. So, absolutely not looking for paint. I've heard some stains have a coating mixed into them, making reapplication down the line difficult because uneven wear will block reapplication of oils/protection from absorbing into the wood - I want to avoid something like this.
I was leaning towards just an oil? I was hoping it would be the easiest option, because we could just clean it well, then reapply a coat? Almost like you would do with mineral oil and cutting boards? I don't have much experience with it however. I understand once we go that route, we can't really change course because the oil will make it difficult for other treatments to adhere (except maybe some oil based ones, but I'm not sure which).
Is a deck oil a good idea? Bad idea? Why?
I'm not in love with the color on the beer box, it's a stain, so its color and treatment have no bearing on the advice I'm looking for.

I live in a very dense urban center and am dad to the most adorable little pup who is going on 10 weeks. He’s super chill and super sweet. We are socializing him as much as possible with people while we wait for him to get fully vaccinated. We have a little TSA carrier and a comfy swaddle thing to carry him in our arms. He goes with us to Farmers Markets, restaurants, cookouts, grocery stores, “walks” in the park (he doesn’t walk) and so on. He’s met hundreds of people at this point and he loves them all with not so much as a bark or anything more than play biting (working on that). He is unfazed by literally everything. So he’s socialized to all types of people and settings. He’s a social butterfly

"The position of the artist is humble. He is essentially a channel," said Dutch painter, Piet Mondrian. This comment can be applied to the greatest, classical chess players throughout history. Although some may not have been humble in personality, the truth of pure, artistic chess is that: it is about the board and not the players; it is objective and sound; it was played as the best moves on the board and not simply because the artist thought it would be 'fun', 'aesthetic', or otherwise. A new form of 'Instant Gratification Chess' has emerged in the post-pandemic world, and has grown into a counterproductive, player-emotional style of chess especially over the internet. Instant Gratification Chess caused by 'chess influencers' on social media, the choice to present top-level blitz and bullet events over classical events, and the corporate, for-profit, agenda of Chess.com has turned Chess into a clickbait and scandal-fueled content farm under which pure, artistic Chess has been lost.
“I play way too much blitz chess. It rots the brain just as surely as alcohol,” said Grandmaster Nigel Short in an interview with Grandmaster Mikhail Golubev (1). Short is a world championship challenger, FIDE Vice President, and member of The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. Short also has regularly made chess commentary over online streams and has been called one of the top five internet broadcasters by Edward Winter, a chess historian (2). Millions of chess games are played daily online, and according to chess.com “an overwhelming percentage (above 99 percent) of these games are played at speed chess time controls” (3). While it must be noted that simply more short games can be played at the same time, ninety-nine (and then some) bullet games are not being played in the time of one sixty-minute game (though one would be shocked how difficult it is to get in such a game online in the first place). When somebody goes online to play a game of chess, their first thought is not to play a rapid (or classical were it an available option) game, but instead to play blitz (or even bullet) where the play approaches absolute imperfection in every way possible. I too have been a victim of this in many cases. This is the new mindset of Instant Gratification Chess, where players open an app and aim to satisfy themself in three minutes or less.
Blitz and Bullet Chess have become akin to TikTok in acting as a feedback loop based on quick satisfaction rather than quality. In an article for the Richmond Journal of Law and Technology, Nathan Crispo says, “Many experts believe TikTok and social media platforms like it are killing children’s attention spans. This decreased attention span has been (not so affectionately) referred to as ‘TikTok Brain.’ Emerging research suggests that watching short-form videos make it difficult for children to engage in activities that don’t offer instant - and constant - gratification. The constant hits of dopamine, the neurotransmitter that gets released when the brain is expecting a reward, reinforces use of apps like TikTok” (4). When a player opens Chess.com, they are shown a convoluted (and not-skill relevant) “league” system that is based only on playing as many games as possible. A 200-rated player, disgustingly, has the same chances in this system as a 2200-rated player so long as they play as many games as possible. A reminder of this repulsive minigame is placed right over a button that will automatically place a player in the very last time control they played, existing to reinforce a feedback loop of blitz - or worse - bullet games. One of the largest things on the Lichess home page displays a live blitz or bullet game being played by high-rated players, setting an immediate example for beginners to say “I should do that.”
Chess, largely via Chess.com, is filling the same role that mobile games do for many players. According to Game Quitters, a resource for individuals with video gaming addictions, “You’ve been trained to become an expert in something with as little work as possible. When in reality, as we know it, it takes discipline and hard work to become adept at a skill,” (5). This mindset is absolutely present in beginning chess players. Three years ago, Reddit User, vastosss asked if other Reddit users believed he could achieve a FIDE title within 10 years; his Chess.com rating was 900 (6). 7 months ago, Reddit User, whydoesithavetosuck asked “I got to 1200 elo in two weeks of playing chess. Is it possible for me to become a GM,” (7). The top comment joked, “There should be some counter for such posts. The answer is always no,” noting just how often people ask these kinds of questions. The design of mobile games starts players in a brainless tutorial that they can complete effortlessly, all while showering them with worthless praise, and in the past few years, these expectations have come to Chess. In a Chess.com forum thread from 2016 with the title *Why are you playing chess?* One commenter said, “It’s cheaper than a movie and it’s something I can do on the toilet,” (10). For the player who is completing a game while sitting on the toilet to urinate, (s)he is probably not aiming to play the most perfect game. After all, chess as a game requires vast personal improvement and study to excel at, not a number one or number two. In a study on the effects of mobile games published by the Frontiers in Education journal the researchers sought to answer the question “why are games addictive but learning is usually not?” They noted, “There is progress in learning, but it is a slow process and people are not sensitive to small changes,” and that there is no instant gratification in months or years of hard work. The study also explained, “It is clear on the game that for everything you achieve, you will be rewarded accordingly and your efforts will be recognized. On the other hand, learning has a great deal of uncertainty. Working very hard and not getting good results happens to almost everyone. This puts a lot of people off, so they choose not to try to work hard, so if they succeed they will be complacent and think they are clever, and if they fail it won’t matter, after all they haven’t put much effort into it,” (8). For the chess player who starts a bullet game on a mobile device while in the restroom, and then does not analyze that game, they are experiencing this process.
Chess influencers promote instant gratification like a useful coach would promote actual, useful study. Here, I searched “chess” on YouTube (10 June 2024) with no prior search history, and the provided results would have made me a worse chess player. The circus of top results included a blitz game by the living gimmick ‘Rey Enigma’; a Chess.com VOD containing roughly 4 hours of bullet games; an Eric Rosen VOD recounting a dozen blitz games; ten YouTube Shorts (short-form TikTok-esque content): all memes, worthless Chess Traps, and a Chess.com video where top Grandmasters were asked to belittle themselves by ranking so-called meme openings into a tier list (a common type of meme content on its own); there were also five different videos with clickbait titles and thumbnails covering the pointless, media-bait, Clash of Claims event. The most viewed GothamChess (the largest of these Chess Influencers) videos are all YouTube shorts, too short to teach anything useful in chess, and they are mostly meme content as well as one short intending to teach beginners to play an unsound opening trap - a mainstay of instant gratification in Chess. His most viewed non-short-form video is about the chess bot Martin, a useless pile of code designed to intentionally lose as many chess games as possible. In fact, International Master Levy Rozman’s most viewed non-short-form videos are almost exclusively about chess bots. His content that would actually help any player improve at the game is comparatively shunned. It is important, also, to remember that these creators don’t decide which of their videos are most viewed and that it is the algorithm of YouTube that decides what to and not to promote. However, these creators are experienced enough to know full well that unsound chess is simply not valuable, and that every minute dedicated to creating meme content is a minute that could be spent on the craft of the game. While some of the same creators have videos that are more useful, these kinds of videos are not created to help the Chess community, they are created entirely for profit. Nonprofit website, Lichess, has posted a fraction of the videos to YouTube that Chess.com has.
Rozman may not be a Chess Grandmaster, but he is certainly a grandmaster of creating Chess clickbait. From titles with words in all-caps such as *This Chess Opening WINS 100% of the Time*, *Win FAST with this Godly Gambit*, or *10 Chess Traps to Win FAST!*, Rozman strategically emphasizes speed and consistency in the titles of videos that are targeted to beginners, players who are too inexperienced to realize the absurdity of the claims being made in these videos. It is no accident that beginners are being targeted with false promises of speed and consistency because the real promise is instant gratification. “Chess games have surged among players in the real world and on Chess.com, an online virtual platform. Since January 2020, more than 102 million users have signed up through Chess.com, a 238% increase,” says Bradley Shimel in an article about Chess.com server issues (due to traffic) in 2023 (9). It’s no mistake that chess content filled with clickbait and downright lies about speed, and consistency - ultimately instant gratification - have risen in popularity. They are videos that are targeted specifically at the beginner, the layperson, and the on-the-toilet player. And, they do not help that player whatsoever. These are the Chess equivalent of narcotics, maybe it feels good to somebody, but it is slowly killing them on the side.
Some other popular subjects of online clickbait are brilliant moves (a completely arbitrary term repurposed by Chess.com to be a virtual slot machine for the casual player’s instant gratification), accuracy score (also created by Chess.com and largely meaningless, especially in fast time controls), and Chess cheating. One would think that a beginner wouldn’t care whatsoever about any of these things. They simply aren’t useful at a low rating level and mean almost nothing at a high rating level where analysis is far more sophisticated than arbitrary symbols and pseudo-random numbers. Cheating is also vastly more of a problem at higher levels than it is at lower levels for somewhat obvious reasons. Brilliant moves (!!), coined by chess authors for old Chess books but rarely, actually used, then repurposed by Chess.com’s analysis feature are often given to piece sacrifices that improve the position. A brilliant move, according to Chess.com, does not need to be the best move in a position; in other words, it’s completely meaningless and effectively random. Chess.com’s algorithm is also designed to be more generous at lower rating levels (11). This is essentially giving the brilliant tag to moves that should never deserve it simply to appease low-rated, instant gratification-seekers. Having a variable definition for brilliancy based on player strength invalidates the whole concept of a move being brilliant in the first place as Chess is first-and-foremost a fully objective game. Good is good. Bad is bad. In an article titled Social Media copies gambling methods ‘to create psychological cravings’, Dr. Daniel Kruger says, “Whether it’s Snapchat streaks, Facebook photo-scrolling, or playing CandyCrush, you get drawn into ‘ludic loops’ or repeated cycles of uncertainty, anticipation and feedback - and the rewards are just enough to keep you going,” (12). This is the purpose of presenting brilliant moves to players, even when those brilliant moves are played without fully understanding the position, or entirely by accident. And, brilliant moves are often played by accident by any random player. In a post from four years ago, Reddit User, saadhu_babu showed a screenshot of a completely ordinary move, in a lost position, being marked brilliant (13). The algorithm for brilliant moves has been changed, at least subtly, since then, but accidental brilliancies are still, proudly shared online within somewhat regular intervals. The cause for more generously displaying brilliant moves to worse players is to ensure that they see them by accident just enough to experience the slot machine effect created by social media platforms and mobile games. The brilliant move icon is regularly shown in the thumbnails of clickbait chess channels such as GothamChess. In the last forty GothamChess videos (as of 10 June 2024), Chess.com’s brilliant move icon is used in the thumbnails of five videos. In one such thumbnail, the entire background is made from repeated use of this icon. Players on Chess.com can only use their built-in analysis feature (where the icon is shown) once per day without paying for a membership. Players who pay for a membership and play as many fast games as possible within a short timeframe are more likely to encounter this slot machine effect, creating a feedback loop.
The accuracy score provided by chess.com is also shown on a game-to-game basis through the paywalled analysis feature. *100% Accuracy. 4 Brilliant Moves.* reads the title of one GothamChess video from six months ago. Another, *Magnus: 99% accuracy* alongside *Hans Niemann wins with 200% accuracy.* Several GothamChess thumbnails also show phony accuracy numbers (as low as 0% for some reason) in eye-catching places. Chess.com’s accuracy is as meaningless as their brilliant move marker. For instance, it gives white an accuracy of 100% in the absurd game: *1. g4 e5 2. f3 Qh5# 0-1.* This is because Chess.com’s opening book treats incredible blunders as accurate so long as they are included as book moves. The people who would be given higher numbers from this are the same people who are playing unsound traps that they memorized from a single YouTube video. For a beginner, a number between 0 and 100 won’t tell them anything about their chess or how to improve it, but it does provide immediate feedback and instant gratification at a glance. However, beginners alone are not entranced by pointless numbers. This computer-generated number has been used to erroneously accuse players of cheating even at the highest levels. Enter 14th World Chess Champion Vladimir Kramnik, undoubtedly one of the greatest chess players in history. On 26 January 2024 via the website formerly known as Twitter, Kramnik posted a series of Chess.com accuracy scores from the games of Grandmaster Dmitry Andreikin (14). This was part of a series of comments where Kramnik insinuated that various other players were cheating in their games. Cheating has been a growing problem in the top level of Chess and has attracted a media frenzy around players such as Grandmaster Hans Niemann, who admitted to cheating in dozens of online games in the past. The attention around cheaters has also made them a popular topic of chess influencers such as Rozman who made videos such as *Chess Cheating Scandal FINAL UPDATE!!*, *GM BANNED FOR CHEATING?!?!?!*, and *Using Hikaru to CHEAT at Chess.* After all, receiving outside assistance is totally acceptable as long as it’s from your friend, you’re both influencers, and it’s for a YouTube video.
While proofreading a recent Shogi article, I was asked by a prominent player to lessen my criticism of players who ask to take back moves, even over the board. Takebacks are a faux pas that teaches players not to learn from their mistakes. After another discussion, it was insinuated to me that calling non-objective, Hope-Chess styles of play for what they were was not beginner-friendly. This new form of Chess that surrounds itself in instant gratification, and promotes revolting trap-focused play, is now starting to infect other communities around itself. The focus in Chess stopped being about helping Chess players improve so that they can improve the community around themselves. It turned to focus on unlimited growth and outreach without any thought to helping - and actually helping - the players who have already joined the community. Chess is being presented to the Fortnite player and not to the Chess player. In its footsteps, Shogi (and surely other board games as well) is being presented to the Chess player and not to the Shogi player. The most common critique I give to beginners who are trying to learn Shogi is “Stop playing Chess with Shogi pieces. Play Shogi with Shogi pieces.” We should not be implying to new Chess players that they can play Candy Crush or Subway Surfers or Fortnite with Chess pieces. We should help them, and we should teach them to play Chess with Chess pieces. That is what instant gratification Chess is: it is watching TikTok or playing a mobile game with Chess pieces.
Strategy has never been about what we want to do, but about what we have to do. Sun Tzu said, “Thus it is that in war the victorious strategist only seeks battle after the victory has been won, whereas he who is destined to defeat first fights and afterwards looks for victory.” Instant gratification is the foundation for a failing strategy. As a community, it is our responsibility to honestly help each and every player to improve at the game whether or not they say they want to get better. For Chess.com, and for the clickbait creators, all that matters is that a source of income comes back tomorrow. Don’t be a Chess number. Be a Chess player. Be a Chess teacher, and help all the other players around you to discover the art of Chess as it truly was meant to be.

"The position of the artist is humble. He is essentially a channel," said Dutch painter, Piet Mondrian. This comment can be applied to the greatest, classical chess players throughout history. Although some may not have been humble in personality, the truth of pure, artistic chess is that: it is about the board and not the players; it is objective and sound; it was played as the best moves on the board and not simply because the artist thought it would be 'fun', 'aesthetic', or otherwise. A new form of 'Instant Gratification Chess' has emerged in the post-pandemic world, and has grown into a counterproductive, player-emotional style of chess especially over the internet. Instant Gratification Chess caused by 'chess influencers' on social media, the choice to present top-level blitz and bullet events over classical events, and the corporate, for-profit, agenda of Chess.com has turned Chess into a clickbait and scandal-fueled content farm under which pure, artistic Chess has been lost.
“I play way too much blitz chess. It rots the brain just as surely as alcohol,” said Grandmaster Nigel Short in an interview with Grandmaster Mikhail Golubev (1). Short is a world championship challenger, FIDE Vice President, and member of The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. Short also has regularly made chess commentary over online streams and has been called one of the top five internet broadcasters by Edward Winter, a chess historian (2). Millions of chess games are played daily online, and according to chess.com “an overwhelming percentage (above 99 percent) of these games are played at speed chess time controls” (3). While it must be noted that simply more short games can be played at the same time, ninety-nine (and then some) bullet games are not being played in the time of one sixty-minute game (though one would be shocked how difficult it is to get in such a game online in the first place). When somebody goes online to play a game of chess, their first thought is not to play a rapid (or classical were it an available option) game, but instead to play blitz (or even bullet) where the play approaches absolute imperfection in every way possible. I too have been a victim of this in many cases. This is the new mindset of Instant Gratification Chess, where players open an app and aim to satisfy themself in three minutes or less.
Blitz and Bullet Chess have become akin to TikTok in acting as a feedback loop based on quick satisfaction rather than quality. In an article for the Richmond Journal of Law and Technology, Nathan Crispo says, “Many experts believe TikTok and social media platforms like it are killing children’s attention spans. This decreased attention span has been (not so affectionately) referred to as ‘TikTok Brain.’ Emerging research suggests that watching short-form videos make it difficult for children to engage in activities that don’t offer instant - and constant - gratification. The constant hits of dopamine, the neurotransmitter that gets released when the brain is expecting a reward, reinforces use of apps like TikTok” (4). When a player opens Chess.com, they are shown a convoluted (and not-skill relevant) “league” system that is based only on playing as many games as possible. A 200-rated player, disgustingly, has the same chances in this system as a 2200-rated player so long as they play as many games as possible. A reminder of this repulsive minigame is placed right over a button that will automatically place a player in the very last time control they played, existing to reinforce a feedback loop of blitz - or worse - bullet games. One of the largest things on the Lichess home page displays a live blitz or bullet game being played by high-rated players, setting an immediate example for beginners to say “I should do that.”
Chess, largely via Chess.com, is filling the same role that mobile games do for many players. According to Game Quitters, a resource for individuals with video gaming addictions, “You’ve been trained to become an expert in something with as little work as possible. When in reality, as we know it, it takes discipline and hard work to become adept at a skill,” (5). This mindset is absolutely present in beginning chess players. Three years ago, Reddit User, vastosss asked if other Reddit users believed he could achieve a FIDE title within 10 years; his Chess.com rating was 900 (6). 7 months ago, Reddit User, whydoesithavetosuck asked “I got to 1200 elo in two weeks of playing chess. Is it possible for me to become a GM,” (7). The top comment joked, “There should be some counter for such posts. The answer is always no,” noting just how often people ask these kinds of questions. The design of mobile games starts players in a brainless tutorial that they can complete effortlessly, all while showering them with worthless praise, and in the past few years, these expectations have come to Chess. In a Chess.com forum thread from 2016 with the title *Why are you playing chess?* One commenter said, “It’s cheaper than a movie and it’s something I can do on the toilet,” (10). For the player who is completing a game while sitting on the toilet to urinate, (s)he is probably not aiming to play the most perfect game. After all, chess as a game requires vast personal improvement and study to excel at, not a number one or number two. In a study on the effects of mobile games published by the Frontiers in Education journal the researchers sought to answer the question “why are games addictive but learning is usually not?” They noted, “There is progress in learning, but it is a slow process and people are not sensitive to small changes,” and that there is no instant gratification in months or years of hard work. The study also explained, “It is clear on the game that for everything you achieve, you will be rewarded accordingly and your efforts will be recognized. On the other hand, learning has a great deal of uncertainty. Working very hard and not getting good results happens to almost everyone. This puts a lot of people off, so they choose not to try to work hard, so if they succeed they will be complacent and think they are clever, and if they fail it won’t matter, after all they haven’t put much effort into it,” (8). For the chess player who starts a bullet game on a mobile device while in the restroom, and then does not analyze that game, they are experiencing this process.
Chess influencers promote instant gratification like a useful coach would promote actual, useful study. Here, I searched “chess” on YouTube (10 June 2024) with no prior search history, and the provided results would have made me a worse chess player. The circus of top results included a blitz game by the living gimmick ‘Rey Enigma’; a Chess.com VOD containing roughly 4 hours of bullet games; an Eric Rosen VOD recounting a dozen blitz games; ten YouTube Shorts (short-form TikTok-esque content): all memes, worthless Chess Traps, and a Chess.com video where top Grandmasters were asked to belittle themselves by ranking so-called meme openings into a tier list (a common type of meme content on its own); there were also five different videos with clickbait titles and thumbnails covering the pointless, media-bait, Clash of Claims event. The most viewed GothamChess (the largest of these Chess Influencers) videos are all YouTube shorts, too short to teach anything useful in chess, and they are mostly meme content as well as one short intending to teach beginners to play an unsound opening trap - a mainstay of instant gratification in Chess. His most viewed non-short-form video is about the chess bot Martin, a useless pile of code designed to intentionally lose as many chess games as possible. In fact, International Master Levy Rozman’s most viewed non-short-form videos are almost exclusively about chess bots. His content that would actually help any player improve at the game is comparatively shunned. It is important, also, to remember that these creators don’t decide which of their videos are most viewed and that it is the algorithm of YouTube that decides what to and not to promote. However, these creators are experienced enough to know full well that unsound chess is simply not valuable, and that every minute dedicated to creating meme content is a minute that could be spent on the craft of the game. While some of the same creators have videos that are more useful, these kinds of videos are not created to help the Chess community, they are created entirely for profit. Nonprofit website, Lichess, has posted a fraction of the videos to YouTube that Chess.com has.
Rozman may not be a Chess Grandmaster, but he is certainly a grandmaster of creating Chess clickbait. From titles with words in all-caps such as *This Chess Opening WINS 100% of the Time*, *Win FAST with this Godly Gambit*, or *10 Chess Traps to Win FAST!*, Rozman strategically emphasizes speed and consistency in the titles of videos that are targeted to beginners, players who are too inexperienced to realize the absurdity of the claims being made in these videos. It is no accident that beginners are being targeted with false promises of speed and consistency because the real promise is instant gratification. “Chess games have surged among players in the real world and on Chess.com, an online virtual platform. Since January 2020, more than 102 million users have signed up through Chess.com, a 238% increase,” says Bradley Shimel in an article about Chess.com server issues (due to traffic) in 2023 (9). It’s no mistake that chess content filled with clickbait and downright lies about speed, and consistency - ultimately instant gratification - have risen in popularity. They are videos that are targeted specifically at the beginner, the layperson, and the on-the-toilet player. And, they do not help that player whatsoever. These are the Chess equivalent of narcotics, maybe it feels good to somebody, but it is slowly killing them on the side.
Some other popular subjects of online clickbait are brilliant moves (a completely arbitrary term repurposed by Chess.com to be a virtual slot machine for the casual player’s instant gratification), accuracy score (also created by Chess.com and largely meaningless, especially in fast time controls), and Chess cheating. One would think that a beginner wouldn’t care whatsoever about any of these things. They simply aren’t useful at a low rating level and mean almost nothing at a high rating level where analysis is far more sophisticated than arbitrary symbols and pseudo-random numbers. Cheating is also vastly more of a problem at higher levels than it is at lower levels for somewhat obvious reasons. Brilliant moves (!!), coined by chess authors for old Chess books but rarely, actually used, then repurposed by Chess.com’s analysis feature are often given to piece sacrifices that improve the position. A brilliant move, according to Chess.com, does not need to be the best move in a position; in other words, it’s completely meaningless and effectively random. Chess.com’s algorithm is also designed to be more generous at lower rating levels (11). This is essentially giving the brilliant tag to moves that should never deserve it simply to appease low-rated, instant gratification-seekers. Having a variable definition for brilliancy based on player strength invalidates the whole concept of a move being brilliant in the first place as Chess is first-and-foremost a fully objective game. Good is good. Bad is bad. In an article titled Social Media copies gambling methods ‘to create psychological cravings’, Dr. Daniel Kruger says, “Whether it’s Snapchat streaks, Facebook photo-scrolling, or playing CandyCrush, you get drawn into ‘ludic loops’ or repeated cycles of uncertainty, anticipation and feedback - and the rewards are just enough to keep you going,” (12). This is the purpose of presenting brilliant moves to players, even when those brilliant moves are played without fully understanding the position, or entirely by accident. And, brilliant moves are often played by accident by any random player. In a post from four years ago, Reddit User, saadhu_babu showed a screenshot of a completely ordinary move, in a lost position, being marked brilliant (13). The algorithm for brilliant moves has been changed, at least subtly, since then, but accidental brilliancies are still, proudly shared online within somewhat regular intervals. The cause for more generously displaying brilliant moves to worse players is to ensure that they see them by accident just enough to experience the slot machine effect created by social media platforms and mobile games. The brilliant move icon is regularly shown in the thumbnails of clickbait chess channels such as GothamChess. In the last forty GothamChess videos (as of 10 June 2024), Chess.com’s brilliant move icon is used in the thumbnails of five videos. In one such thumbnail, the entire background is made from repeated use of this icon. Players on Chess.com can only use their built-in analysis feature (where the icon is shown) once per day without paying for a membership. Players who pay for a membership and play as many fast games as possible within a short timeframe are more likely to encounter this slot machine effect, creating a feedback loop.
The accuracy score provided by chess.com is also shown on a game-to-game basis through the paywalled analysis feature. *100% Accuracy. 4 Brilliant Moves.* reads the title of one GothamChess video from six months ago. Another, *Magnus: 99% accuracy* alongside *Hans Niemann wins with 200% accuracy.* Several GothamChess thumbnails also show phony accuracy numbers (as low as 0% for some reason) in eye-catching places. Chess.com’s accuracy is as meaningless as their brilliant move marker. For instance, it gives white an accuracy of 100% in the absurd game: *1. g4 e5 2. f3 Qh5# 0-1.* This is because Chess.com’s opening book treats incredible blunders as accurate so long as they are included as book moves. The people who would be given higher numbers from this are the same people who are playing unsound traps that they memorized from a single YouTube video. For a beginner, a number between 0 and 100 won’t tell them anything about their chess or how to improve it, but it does provide immediate feedback and instant gratification at a glance. However, beginners alone are not entranced by pointless numbers. This computer-generated number has been used to erroneously accuse players of cheating even at the highest levels. Enter 14th World Chess Champion Vladimir Kramnik, undoubtedly one of the greatest chess players in history. On 26 January 2024 via the website formerly known as Twitter, Kramnik posted a series of Chess.com accuracy scores from the games of Grandmaster Dmitry Andreikin (14). This was part of a series of comments where Kramnik insinuated that various other players were cheating in their games. Cheating has been a growing problem in the top level of Chess and has attracted a media frenzy around players such as Grandmaster Hans Niemann, who admitted to cheating in dozens of online games in the past. The attention around cheaters has also made them a popular topic of chess influencers such as Rozman who made videos such as *Chess Cheating Scandal FINAL UPDATE!!*, *GM BANNED FOR CHEATING?!?!?!*, and *Using Hikaru to CHEAT at Chess.* After all, receiving outside assistance is totally acceptable as long as it’s from your friend, you’re both influencers, and it’s for a YouTube video.
While proofreading a recent Shogi article, I was asked by a prominent player to lessen my criticism of players who ask to take back moves, even over the board. Takebacks are a faux pas that teaches players not to learn from their mistakes. After another discussion, it was insinuated to me that calling non-objective, Hope-Chess styles of play for what they were was not beginner-friendly. This new form of Chess that surrounds itself in instant gratification, and promotes revolting trap-focused play, is now starting to infect other communities around itself. The focus in Chess stopped being about helping Chess players improve so that they can improve the community around themselves. It turned to focus on unlimited growth and outreach without any thought to helping - and actually helping - the players who have already joined the community. Chess is being presented to the Fortnite player and not to the Chess player. In its footsteps, Shogi (and surely other board games as well) is being presented to the Chess player and not to the Shogi player. The most common critique I give to beginners who are trying to learn Shogi is “Stop playing Chess with Shogi pieces. Play Shogi with Shogi pieces.” We should not be implying to new Chess players that they can play Candy Crush or Subway Surfers or Fortnite with Chess pieces. We should help them, and we should teach them to play Chess with Chess pieces. That is what instant gratification Chess is: it is watching TikTok or playing a mobile game with Chess pieces.
Strategy has never been about what we want to do, but about what we have to do. Sun Tzu said, “Thus it is that in war the victorious strategist only seeks battle after the victory has been won, whereas he who is destined to defeat first fights and afterwards looks for victory.” Instant gratification is the foundation for a failing strategy. As a community, it is our responsibility to honestly help each and every player to improve at the game whether or not they say they want to get better. For Chess.com, and for the clickbait creators, all that matters is that a source of income comes back tomorrow. Don’t be a Chess number. Be a Chess player. Be a Chess teacher, and help all the other players around you to discover the art of Chess as it truly was meant to be.

I recently acquired a cute lil trap from a friend, and while I have no intentions of repotting right now (hello summer!) I will probably do so next spring. That being said, my brother is a glass blower and I'm thinking of having him make me something.
Are there any cons to the pros? Like, should it be dark and opaque or is clear and colored ok?? Could it cook the roots if it's clear vs opaque? Glass wouldn't leech AFAIK, so it's an ok-ish idea?
If it helps, I'm in NW Montana, our growing season is just starting (literally, like with in the last week the snow came off the mountains) and will run until about mid-late September or so.
He's outside right now suckin up about 14 hours of unadulterated sunlight, he is kept nice and moist (we are obsessed and check him atleast three times a day). Day time temps are averaging about 75°F right now with night time 45-50°F (I do cover him at night though). I plan to overwinter him in our old wood door or maybe the grow room (either is about 55°F all year).
Is there any reason I can't have a glass bowl?????

Hey, guys. I'm reaching out to this subreddit for any and all advice, because I've found myself in a really frustrating and scary situation that I'm really not sure how to handle. For a little background, I'm a 20-year-old American Girl doll collector, and I frequently shop on Mercari for dolls. However, my most recent transaction has really turned into a horrifying ordeal, ending in the seller letting me know she is reporting me to my local police station. Just as a forewarning, this will be a long post.
Anyway, here's the timeline of this situation:
May 24: I purchase an American Girl doll from a seller on Mercari after asking first if the doll has any flaws. The seller's responses are super friendly. She assures me the doll does not have any flaws, other than the hair being a bit brittle and tousled. I’m fine with that, so I go ahead and pay for the item, which is priced at $60.
The seller ships the item out about an hour later.
May 26: I receive the doll. She is in worse condition than I was promised, with a few obvious flaws, like scratches and scuffs on the vinyl body that were not mentioned in the description or in my messages with the seller. I am hesitant to open a return request, since I have rarely ever had to do so, and it makes me feel terrible to inconvenience the seller. However, I ultimately decide these are flaws I can't dismiss, so I go ahead and open a return request with Mercari, submitting some photos that showcase the issues I have with the item, along with a kind and professional message thanking the seller for her quick shipping, but explaining that I'd like to return the doll because of the scuffs that weren't represented.
A few hours later, Mercari approves my request and sends me the return label. I pack the back doll up neatly to be returned on Tuesday, after the long Memorial Day weekend.
May 30: I print the return label, tape it to the box, and drive to my local UPS store to start my return. I drop the doll off to be sent back to the seller.
June 4: I open the Mercari app to check on the tracking information for my return, to see if the package was delivered back to the seller yet. This is when I see that the tracking information for the return has not updated since June 1. I'm troubled by this, but figure it just needs some time to update, and that the package will be delivered shortly, if it hasn't already.
June 5: My mom lets me know that the package has been returned to me by UPS. (I live at parents’ house.) It simply showed back up on our doorstep, and the label, for some reason, is slashed out in permanent marker. I am absolutely dumbfounded by this, so I immediately open Mercari to check on the tracking information to see if anything about this has been recorded. That's when I see that the return tracking still has not updated since June 1.
Concerned, I reach out to Mercari’s customer support, telling them that UPS has returned the package to me without explanation. I ask for advice on how to proceed. The agent that gets back to me seems to not have properly read my message, because his response reads: "I checked the tracking information of your return and it looks like the item is still in transit. Also, if the tracking does not update by 06-14-2024 13:25:07, you'll be automatically issued a refund in the original form of payment. If you received the item back, kindly contact us again and we'll revisit this case."
At this point, I'm thinking, Didn't I just say that I DID receive the item back?
I decide to let the case go until the next day, since I’m too busy and overwhelmed to write back.
June 6: Seller reaches out to me, and she's angry. However, it's not her anger that confuses me, exactly; it's what she wrote in her message to me. The seller is claiming that she "checked with the carrier" and that I never shipped the item out (folks, I have the tracking information to prove that I did).
She also tells me that I "lied with the pics" that I attached in my return request, and threatens (copied and pasted), "If she's not shipped back in the right condition, I will be filling a police report with your local police department. This is called "Theft by Deception" and is criminal."
At this point, I'm so shaken up by this. I've never gone through anything like this before. Like many others, I struggle with anxiety, and this has really triggered it. I take a minute to collect myself before calmly replying and explaining the situation in its entirety. I assure her that the flaws, although she overlooked them, were there, and that I am making no attempts to deceive. I tell her that as soon as I'm able, I'll check with UPS to see why the package was returned to me, and that I'll work with her to make sure that, no matter what, the doll will be returned to her, even if I must pay out of pocket to do so. I also share with her the exact address of the UPS store I shipped the return through, writing that, if it would make her feel better, she can check with them for evidence that I really did ship the item out.
The seller does not reply. I assume my messages have calmed her down.
The next day, Friday, I'm very wrapped up in personal hardship, so I'm not able to find the time to reach out to contact UPS or Mercari, but I plan to do so right away on Monday during UPS's operating hours.
June 9 (yesterday): The weekend has come and gone. It's now Monday. I wake up and reach for my phone to see a message from the seller waiting for me. Copied and pasted, it says the following:
"I will be filling an ic3 (internet fraud) report, mail fraud (with the carrier), and a police report in your town. I work in law enforcement and take this serious. You won't scam me sweetheart."
My heart drops. I start writing a reply asking why the seller is reacting so irrationally when I have clearly expressed that I would do what I could to reconcile this. I now have so much anxiety over this ordeal, and don't know what to do about this. I can't imagine buying anything on Mercari again after this. This has just been unimaginably stressful. I've since reached out to Mercari again, but the agent that replied to me also didn't seem to understand what's happening. He wrote, "I just checked the tracking information for your return, and it looks like it's still in transit. Don't worry, your item should be delivered soon. I appreciate your patience, and should you have any other concerns, please feel free to reach out to us anytime and we'll be happy to help."
This is beyond frustrating, and I have no idea what to do! I've never experienced anything like this before. Can I get in legal trouble? I'm so shaken up over everything that's happened over the past few days.

Anyway, here's the timeline of this situation:
May 24: I purchase an American Girl doll from a seller on Mercari after asking first if the doll has any flaws. The seller's responses are super friendly. She assures me the doll does not have any flaws, other than the hair being a bit brittle and tousled. I’m fine with that, so I go ahead and pay for the item, which is priced at $60.
The seller ships the item out about an hour later.
May 26: I receive the doll. She is in worse condition than I was promised, with a few obvious flaws, like scratches and scuffs on the vinyl body that were not mentioned in the description or in my messages with the seller. I am hesitant to open a return request, since I have rarely ever had to do so, and it makes me feel terrible to inconvenience the seller. However, I ultimately decide these are flaws I can't dismiss, so I go ahead and open a return request with Mercari, submitting some photos that showcase the issues I have with the item, along with a kind and professional message thanking the seller for her quick shipping, but explaining that I'd like to return the doll because of the scuffs that weren't represented.
A few hours later, Mercari approves my request and sends me the return label. I pack the back doll up neatly to be returned on Tuesday, after the long Memorial Day weekend.
May 30: I print the return label, tape it to the box, and drive to my local UPS store to start my return. I drop the doll off to be sent back to the seller.
June 4: I open the Mercari app to check on the tracking information for my return, to see if the package was delivered back to the seller yet. This is when I see that the tracking information for the return has not updated since June 1. I'm troubled by this, but figure it just needs some time to update, and that the package will be delivered shortly, if it hasn't already.
June 5: My mom lets me know that the package has been returned to me by UPS. (I live at parents’ house.) It simply showed back up on our doorstep, and the label, for some reason, is slashed out in permanent marker. I am absolutely dumbfounded by this, so I immediately open Mercari to check on the tracking information to see if anything about this has been recorded. That's when I see that the return tracking still has not updated since June 1.
Concerned, I reach out to Mercari’s customer support, telling them that UPS has returned the package to me without explanation. I ask for advice on how to proceed. The agent that gets back to me seems to not have properly read my message, because his response reads: "I checked the tracking information of your return and it looks like the item is still in transit. Also, if the tracking does not update by 06-14-2024 13:25:07, you'll be automatically issued a refund in the original form of payment. If you received the item back, kindly contact us again and we'll revisit this case."
At this point, I'm thinking, Didn't I just say that I DID receive the item back?
I decide to let the case go until the next day, since I’m too busy and overwhelmed to write back.
June 6: Seller reaches out to me, and she's angry. However, it's not her anger that confuses me, exactly; it's what she wrote in her message to me. The seller is claiming that she "checked with the carrier" and that I never shipped the item out (folks, I have the tracking information to prove that I did).
She also tells me that I "lied with the pics" that I attached in my return request, and threatens (copied and pasted), "If she's not shipped back in the right condition, I will be filling a police report with your local police department. This is called "Theft by Deception" and is criminal."
At this point, I'm so shaken up by this. I've never gone through anything like this before. Like many others, I struggle with anxiety, and this has really triggered it. I take a minute to collect myself before calmly replying and explaining the situation in its entirety. I assure her that the flaws, although she overlooked them, were there, and that I am making no attempts to deceive. I tell her that as soon as I'm able, I'll check with UPS to see why the package was returned to me, and that I'll work with her to make sure that, no matter what, the doll will be returned to her, even if I must pay out of pocket to do so. I also share with her the exact address of the UPS store I shipped the return through, writing that, if it would make her feel better, she can check with them for evidence that I really did ship the item out.
The seller does not reply. I assume my messages have calmed her down.
The next day, Friday, I'm very wrapped up in personal hardship, so I'm not able to find the time to reach out to contact UPS or Mercari, but I plan to do so right away on Monday during UPS's operating hours.
June 9 (yesterday): The weekend has come and gone. It's now Monday. I wake up and reach for my phone to see a message from the seller waiting for me. Copied and pasted, it says the following:
"I will be filling an ic3 (internet fraud) report, mail fraud (with the carrier), and a police report in your town. I work in law enforcement and take this serious. You won't scam me sweetheart."
My heart drops. I start writing a reply asking why the seller is reacting so irrationally when I have clearly expressed that I would do what I could to reconcile this. Hi all. Currently getting back into golf after 10 years of infrequent playing. Pretty solid ball striker, shooting in the 80s with horrible short game.
Currently have my old set of ~2015 Callaway XR irons. I am looking into new irons, maybe even trying Takomo 301 combo set or 101T set.
Is it worth upgrading? Worth spending big $ on name brand irons and a full fitting? Or spending less than half on a Takomo 301 combo set?
Interested to hear your opinions or if anyone else has done a similar switch. Thank you!
