2024.05.21 15:57 _-Big-Hat-_ Need help to buy a new budget monitor--preferably something large like 32 inch
Hello,
I am looking for a new monitor and I'd need something large s.a. 28'' or preferably 32'' with a good sharp display and contrast. The monitor will be used mainly for work but some hobbies like image processing or video editing are also considered. I'm also a casual gamer but it's not super important. My machine is about 4 years old with ASUS RTX 2080Ti 11GB. If you need any more info, please let me know. I know DP port is older 1.4 as well as HDMI 2.0b.
I can see Amazon advertises some cheap monitors. There are flat and curved products. For instance, a flat
Samsung LU32J590UQPXXU UJ590 32" 4K UHD Monitor on Amazon costs only £224 and seems to have good specs considering the price:
- It's 4K UHD
- VA panel
- Advertised as Bilions colour shades
- Small gamut error:
- According to comments,
- According to tests after a proper calibration
- Labelled as F in EU Energy Label rating; other monitors have G
- Image contrast ratio: 3000:1
- Decent response time: 4 ms
- Flicker-Free
- 2 HDMI ports and 1 DP
- Good angle viewing 178 degree
- Extra features: can use either stand or VESA mount
The cons:
- LCD panel
- Luminance only 270 cd/m2
- Flat
- Refresh rate: 60 Hz
- DP 1.2 and HDMI 2.0
This monitor also has good reviews mostly 5 stars and tests on a few websites I visited reported decent colour representation. The only issue is calibration is required. Reviews report sharp and clear screen without any visible display problems. Due to a VA panel, I do expect some light bleeding at corners considering the size of 32 inch screen.
A much more expensive monitor (£229) is
Samsung U32J590UQR - UJ59 Series - LED monitor. I can't spot any difference, apart from LED display panel. I have to admit I'm confused about the difference between LCD and LED in practice. I tried to read some specifications but there is little to say about which is better and why, considering different circumstances.
The other monitors I'd consider would be those with curved but they cost higher. The monitos I found, mostly Samsung, haven't implemented features s.a. FreeSync or Flicker-free; they also lack of VESA mounts, stands are not quite flexible etc.
All of the monitors so far do not have HDR implemented. IIRC the price is at least twice as much as SDR if not more. So currently, I'd have to opt for a non-HDR example.
Of course, the monitor I thought in the first section may not be even worth this price. If you have other suggestions, please do recommend something, instead. I wouldn't mind something by Dell, Philips, BenQ, LG, Acer, etc. Also, lots of monitors are old like 5 or 6 yo. My budget cannot currently exceed £400--this is the hard limit.
Cheers!

2024.05.21 15:51 terryleewhite What's New in the May 2024 Lightroom Release?
| Hi everyone, Terry White from Adobe here, and I'm happy to share the news about today's Adobe Photography Release (May 2024). There are updates across the Lightroom Ecosystem to include Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, Lightroom on Mobile, and Lightroom on Web. Today, we are introducing a groundbreaking feature in Lightroom-Generative Remove, powered by Firefly. This innovative tool allows you to effortlessly eliminate distractions from your photos with a single brush stroke, all without the need to switch to Photoshop. We've also improved Lens Blur (which was in Early Access), making it easier than ever to control the depth of field in your photos with professional results. Easily remove distractions with Generative Remove (early access) Available on Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, Lightroom for mobile (iOS & Android), Lightroom for web, and Adobe Camera Raw https://i.redd.it/axpim9fmas1d1.gif With Generative Remove, powered by Firefly, you can easily remove unwanted objects and distractions, even on complex backgrounds, in just a few simple steps. Distractions can ruin an otherwise great photo. Generative Remove allows you to quickly remove them with realistic, high-quality results. Generative Remove uses Firefly technology to intelligently fill the photo behind removed items. The results on complex backgrounds are particularly impressive, like matching a detailed wallpaper pattern or the fabric on a plaid shirt. Lightroom will even give you a few variations to choose from so you'll have full creative control in picking the one you like best. \Note that the previous "Heal" tool is now called "Remove." You'll find Generative Remove within the Remove tool, accessible via a toggle on Lightroom mobile or a check box on Lightroom for web, Lightroom Classic, and Lightroom.* Generative Remove is powered by Firefly Image 1 Model and is available today as an early access feature to Lightroom paid plan subscribers across the Lightroom ecosystem via mobile, desktop, iPad, web and Classic. Get a pro-quality background blur with AI-powered Lens Blur Available on Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, Lightroom for mobile (iOS & Android), Lightroom for web, and Adobe Camera Raw https://i.redd.it/h43ibvxnas1d1.gif Our improved Lens Blur uses the power of AI to map the foreground and background of your image to apply a pro-quality blur effect. Blur busy backgrounds to make your portraits pop, add a dramatic blur to nature photos to make the greenery stand out, or get a dreamy, blurred background from a sparkling city skyline at night. With the interactive and flexible controls of Lens Blur, you can play around with the blur amount, change the shape of the light points or "bokeh," and customize the area you want to blur using the focus range tool. This new release of Lens Blur includes better subject detection, the ability to create custom presets, and batch editing capabilities. Please note that the latter two features are coming soon to Android devices. Get the perfect blur effect in a click with new Lens Blur Adaptive Presets Available on Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, Lightroom for mobile (iOS & Android), Lightroom for web, and Adobe Camera Raw Today, we also introduce a set of brand-new adaptive presets for Lens Blur that use AI technology to apply a blur effect that's tailor-made to your photo. Presets are great for quickly finding the perfect blur look without having to dig into fine-tuned edits. You can choose from seven Blur Background adaptive presets that change the shape and style of the blur in the background: Subtle, Strong, Circle, Bubble, Geometric, Ring, or Swirl. After you pick a preset, you can adjust the strength of the blur with the amount slider or customize the effect further by using the Lens Blur tool controls. What else is new in the latest Lightroom release We've also made several updates across the Lightroom ecosystem that give you more creative control and flexibility when working on your photos and videos. Enjoy Sony tethering support Available in Lightroom Classic on the latest Sony digital cameras such as the Alpha 7 IV and Alpha 7R V – for a full list see here. See your images on a big screen as soon as you click the camera shutter. We're expanding support for tethering by adding the latest Sony digital cameras so you can photograph directly into Lightroom Classic, saving precious time on your workflow. It's now even easier to review photo details, edit in real-time, and collaborate with on-set production teams and clients. For a full list of all newly supported cameras in Lightroom see this page. Easily move cloud files to your local drive Available on Lightroom At last year's Adobe MAX conference, we introduced local storage for Lightroom — the option to work with your photos and videos in Lightroom without having to import or sync them to the cloud. With this release, it's now easier to move or archive your photos off the Lightroom Cloud and store them on your computer's internal drive, an external drive, or a local server. This is great when you want to free up space on the cloud, or for file management such as archiving past projects to a local drive. You can select multiple files within an album, or an entire album to move to your local drive. Lightroom will ask what folder structure you'd like to use, so you can preserve the album structure locally as you move it off the cloud. This is especially useful if you have a high volume of photos and are working with numerous files at a time. Edit videos with the Tone Curve Available on Lightroom You can now edit videos in Lightroom using Tone Curve. This graph-based tool enables you to fine-tune a video's brightness and contrast by simply dragging the curve control points up or down. For example, if a point on the tone curve is moved up, it becomes a lighter tone; if it is moved down, it becomes darker. Create and play slideshows in Lightroom Available on Lightroom Lightroom now has a slideshow feature so you can display selected photos from your library in a slideshow format — a great way to share edits with clients, family, or friends. Performance, reliability, and workflow enhancements to Lightroom Classic We've also made the following improvements to Lightroom Classic, so that it performs smoothly and enables you to work more efficiently: - Improved cloud syncing: Images in your Lightroom Cloud will now more reliably match what you see in your Classic catalog and vice versa
- Smoother image navigation in Develop: We've improved the responsiveness and navigation experience in Develop along with better caching
- Optimized preview management: We have re-architected the way we generate and store previews, resulting in a much smoother experience
- Filter by exported images: You can now filter for files by their export status and create a smart collection showing what's been exported
- Search support for new metadata: We've introduced new capabilities to search and create smart collections by alt text, extended descriptions, and images edited with Remove or Point Color
Watch a Demo I created a video showing off these features that you can watch here: https://youtu.be/0VP7vhIfdYE We are also LIVE on Adobe Live starting at 9AM PT/12 Noon ET here: https://www.behance.net/live/videos/23345/From-Ordinary-to-Extraordinary-Live-Lightroom-Editing-with-Professional-Photographers Try out the new features from today. You can download the latest features and enhancements today on Lightroom for mobile from the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, and Samsung Galaxy Store. Try the Lightroom app for free by going to the app store on your mobile phone. Lightroom for web features are available at lightroom.adobe.com and no download is required. Lightroom for desktop can be downloaded via the Creative Cloud Desktop app. To learn more about these updates, check out the What's New pages for Lightroom and Lightroom Classic. Disclaimer: Generative Remove in Lightroom is available to all Creative Cloud members with a subscription or trial that includes Lightroom. Generative Remove is not available in China. Our commitment to AI ethics and principles Adobe is committed to developing AI in accordance with the company's AI Ethics principles of accountability, responsibility, and transparency. As AI becomes more prevalent in content creation, Adobe believes that it is important to provide consumers with transparency about its use in the creative process. A recent study from Adobe showed that 76% of U.S. consumers emphasized the importance of knowing if online content is generated using AI. When Generative Remove becomes generally available, Content Credentials will be automatically attached to photos edited with the feature in Lightroom. Like a "nutrition label" for digital content, Content Credentials are tamper-evident metadata that can provide important information about how content was created, modified and published. Content Credentials are built on the C2PA open standard and supported by the Adobe-led Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), which was founded in 2019 to increase trust in the digital ecosystem. Today, the CAI has grown into a global coalition of over 3,000 members across tech, policy, media companies, creative professionals, researchers and more, all working together to add transparency to digital content. As always, let us know if you have any questions in the comments. Cheers! Happy Lightroom Day. submitted by terryleewhite to Lightroom [link] [comments] |

2024.05.21 15:50 freddiemercurial 45 [M4F] UK/Anywhere - I cling, therefore I am
Not necessarily emotionally, but physically. I love hugging and cuddling, and I'll want to attach to you like a limpet attaches itself to a rock. If it's physical shows of affection that you're after, I'm your man.
I’m after the relationship that goes the distance, the one that results in love and, when the time is right, the ‘m word’. I can’t think of anything I look forward to more than spending my life with the woman I love.
I love physical displays of affection, both public and otherwise. Gestures like holding, hugging, etc, are something I adore and would always welcome, especially because I love the excitement and warm feeling that come with being close to the one you love.
The person I am after is someone who is kind and caring, somebody that I can relaxed around. I don’t want the stress of being around someone who gets set off my the smallest thing. My sense of humour is varied, although it can best be described as something of a mix of Chandler Bing (RIP) and Edmund Blackadder.
When we’re together, my ideal night would involve spending our time at home, curled up on the sofa together and watching a film, or playing a game, although I’m not against the occasional day/night out if it’s just the two of us.I watch little in the way of current TV or films, and almost no sport. My main solo hobbies can be found on my
friends post.
If we’re apart, as I presume we would be in the early days of our relationship, then, because I game a fair bit, I’d be open to you watching me play something, or vice versa if you game as well. We could also chat while we play our own individual games. We can also watch films, TV, etc, or whatever may bring us closer together.
I’m in the UK, so I would prefer to talk to someone who is also in the UK, as it would make things convenient for the both of us, and it would also make meeting up easier, and I would want to meet up if things progress well. However, I am open to talking to people who are overseas,
as long as you’re moving to the UK in the near future, and
that the move is, if not set in stone, then is at least guaranteed to happen or to be able to happen. Be aware that I am unable to travel overseas, although not for any nefarious reason.
I’m a vegetarian, though I don’t mind being around meat eaters as long as they’re respectful of how I feel. I don’t drink and, while I’m okay being with someone who does, it won’t work if you’re a person who drinks frequently. I’m non-religious and non-spiritual, and this will never change, and my views are generally what you’d call progressive and liberal. Disparate views are one thing, but if you use terms like ‘PC/PC culture’, ‘liberal’ or ‘woke’ as pejoratives, we will not get along. In addition, I do not smoke and will not be with a smoker.
I’m okay with either private messaging or Reddit chat, though I’d like to move off Reddit once we both feel comfortable doing so. Once we’ve moved to a different platform, exchanging pictures is then also something that
would be done once we’re both comfortable, as would voice and video chat, especially because the best way to really get to know someone is through real-time communication.
Your opening message doesn’t have to be that long, just give me something to work with, something that can spark conversation. If you have any questions, queries, posers, then feel free to ask.

2024.05.21 15:39 TheLostMaverick Building a PC for my wife who has had her gaming awakening! - Help greatly appreciated! [UK][MicroATX][~£1k]
Hello all, as it says in the title I'm looking to build my wife a PC. She has recently opened her eyes to the wonders of PC gaming. She's always been a console player (Was terrified of mouse and keyboard) but after playing Hogwarts Legacy on PS4 she thought she would like to try Baldurs Gate 3 which I had on PC. Safe to say she enjoyed that and now has a backlog of games she wants to play which is longer than my arm. This is great but we only have one PC and no laptop which means that if she's on my PC I can't use it and vice versa. This, in her own words, has become; "
An untenable situation.". We don't own a laptop and we're not too keen on going down that particular route.
Onto the topic of the build! We know we would like the build to be a MicroATX as the space that the PC will be going isn't really suitable for a Mid or Full tower. We'd like the PC to be able to comfortably run games like Hogwarts Legacy, BG3 but also have a some scope to play upcoming games at 1080p. Not as interested in building a fully futureproof 1440p beast that will break the bank.
It's been a while since the height of my PC building era and having come back into it, in a formfactor I'm not used to, after a several year hiatus, I feel overwhelmed. I've tried wading through the quagmire of forums, reviews, tech YouTube channels and opinions and I've arguable come out in worse shape than I went in with. So with all that being said, I'd really appreciate if those of you who were willing and able would cast your savvy peepers on the below list and give it some constructive criticism. Feel free to ask any questions!
I'm trying to keep the build in the ~£1,000 range, ideally below as we do have some peripherals to buy.
TL:DR: I need help building a MicroATX PC, I've got the draft list below and would appreciate constructive criticism. I have an old PSU but don't know if it's of any use for this build:
PCPartPicker Part List:
https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/HKrmTY CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor (Stock Cooler) (£121.32 @ NeoComputers)
Motherboard: MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard (£104.99 @ Amazon UK)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory (£38.99 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Crucial P3 Plus 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive (£69.99 @ Ebuyer)
Video Card: Asus DUAL OC Radeon RX 7600 XT 16 GB Video Card (£333.53 @ NeoComputers)
Case: Cooler Master Q300L V2 MicroATX Mini Tower Case (£53.97 @ Amazon UK)
PSU:
TBC (
I have an old Corsair RM650W Fully Modular 80+ Gold, from 2015, too old to reuse?)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 11 Home OEM - DVD 64-bit (£108.98 @ Overclockers.co.uk)
Total: £831.77

2024.05.21 15:37 Puzzleheaded-Sir7126 I remember I was conflicted...
I feel like this Is mainly a U.S based reddit but I want to ask my fellow black man something, if you can relate, you relate init.
Im a born muslim, proud Nigerian, raised in the UK. I love my fellow africans to death and I know in my family and a lot other west african families, 90% of the time your going to have a lot of Muslims or Christians in your family. (eg your mum might be Christian and your dad is Muslim). Even me I went to a Christian school, went choir and when my school went church every month, I went and sang hymns. So i dont see an issue with Christians, only the up most respect.
But I find some of west african Christians in the west move so Anti Muslim. I get if your christian , you would only focus on being christian and the bible. But some people are saying the maddest things about Islam which hurts cus im sure you have family members that are muslim. If theres something you dont get, like you can ask them, if not ask your friends who im sure you have that are muslim? Some of the things they say really dont make sense. Ive noticed its mainly some west africans, Caribbean dont move like this.
Idk to the muslim brothers do you experience this? My christian brothers its not even the majority of you, its just some, i got nothing but respect for you. Your free to add your two pence in cus Id love to see your viewpoint.
Love

2024.05.21 15:25 TheTyler123 My Retribution as Castile in EU4 (Ongoing co-op Castile/Switzerland campaign)
2024.05.21 15:16 authrop My setup for Ironsworn - a long road to finding a flow.
| I discovered Ironsworn a few years back during a Print-and-play / Solo gaming phase brought about due to the pandemic lockdown. I had played and enjoyed Four Against Darkness and quickly started looking for something else to scratch the Solo RPG/Gaming itch. Ironsworn seemed really interesting for a number of reasons: - The narrative first approach interested me as someone who has enjoyed creative writing forever but lacked the focus to actually sit down and do it regularly.
- The very relaxed attitude to the setting. The Ironlands felt like it was as much a jumping off point for world creation as an interesting world to explore. The Your Truths exercise only increased this feeling and was a joy to complete on its own, even without playing the game.
- The extremely well written (Free!) rulebook which quickly became something I read to relax, again without even begining to play the game.
- The Oracles felt incredible to roll on and discover new exciting and unexpected avenues for storytelling.
Despite all of this interest, I initially struggled to get a campaign off the ground. I would enjoy creating the world and a character but then after a brief start, lose interest in my personal journey and return back to looking at the rulebook or finding other resources available, or watching Me, Myself and Die! or some other, much more practised, solo player. I think the reason for this was that I didn't have a set method for actually playing the game. I would switch between: messing with Roll20 or Ironjournal, jotted down notes in a notepad, using a word document on my laptop and various other ways as I basically procrastinated actually making headway in my story. Even printing and organising the Lodestar reference book along with various cheatsheets in a nice folder for eventual use once I stopped dithering about. In the end, it got shelved. Always in the back of my mind and never completely forgotten but not touched for a couple of years. Then recently I got an urge and had a quick glance through the rulebook PDF which was on my phone and I realised something I should have known all along; Ironsworn isn't a strict, crunchy system but a tool for personal storytelling and to relax into it. So after rereading the entire rulebook (haha, of course! I love that thing) and also looking into the newer version of Ironjournal, I started and it's even better than I imagined once everything starts to flow and analysis paralysis fades. My current setup is: • A tablet (less distractions than a laptop) and a Bluetooth keyboard (for faster typing and easier access to formatting controls). • The newer Ironjournal open in split screen with a Google document - I use Ironjournal for the truths, the character sheet and progress tracks, map and location/NPC tracking. The Google doc is for the my campaign journal as I can have a nicer, more novel-like font (helps me alot for all types of writing) and also allows me to format it clearer between narrative and mechanics over the inbuilt journal function of IJ. • After using the inbuilt dice rolleoracle roller in IJ for a short while, I have switched to psychical dice and a dice tray and I now refer to my stats and the oracles in Eric Bright's Expanded Oracles document (which now includes Shawn Tomkins original oracles as well). Manually making the calculations and assessing the results. - Although this method is slightly longer, it seems to produce better narrative discussions for me rather than the extremely quick way in which IJ throws the results at you. • I also have the rulebook PDF open as a pop out for reference along with the Expanded Oracles PDF. • Finally, something I have discovered and I find interesting is using the UNE (Universal NPC Emulator) and BOLD (Book of Legends and Deeds) both by the late Zach Best. I believe these pre-date Ironsworn by a good 10 years and in someway do a similar job as some of IS's oracles but there is something about the structure and the results being framed as a leading question I find helpful and exciting. All in all, I think I've found a good workflow to progress stories and enjoy the system (finally!). Next upgrades on my list are: • To become familiar with Delve and introduce that - I have the PDF and have read a large chunk of it but haven't bit the bullet and used it (I also haven't felt the base game lacking or the need for more as of yet). • To get some heavy metal dice as the tactile element of them appeals to me in a way I can't quite explain (haha!). • To become more familiar with how best to map out or otherwise create visual counterparts for my adventures, either using AI image generation or something else. Currently using a generated village map from Watabou's Procgen Arcana as a starting point for my characters home village. Any advice or things that people have found to be personally beneficial in getting and keeping your games interesting and flowing well would be greatly appreciated. Not sure if I wrote this post for advice or to simply consolidate my relationship with the Ironsworn system for myself. Either way, here is it! submitted by authrop to Ironsworn [link] [comments] |

2024.05.21 14:58 FarragutCircle Reading The Big Book of Cyberpunk, Week 17
Welcome to
Reading The Big Book of Cyberpunk!
Each week we (
u/FarragutCircle and
u/fanny_bertram) will be reading 5-ish stories from Jared Shurin’s
The Big Book of Cyberpunk, which includes a curated selection of cyberpunk stories written from 1950 to 2022! We’ll include synopses of the stories along with links to any legally available online versions we can find. Feel free to read along with us or just stop by and hear our thoughts about some cyberpunk stories to decide if any of them sound interesting to you.
Every once in a while, we reach out to people who have more insight, due to being fans of the author or have some additional context for the story. (Or we just tricked them into it.) So please welcome
u/RuinEleint who will be sharing their thoughts on "The Yuletide Cyberpunk Yarn, or Christmas_Eve-117.DIR" by Victor Pelevin!
“Deep Eddy” by Bruce Sterling (published 1993; also available in his collection
Ascendancies: The Best of Bruce Sterling)
Deep Eddy is acting as a data courier to the Cultural Critic in Düsseldorf, right as the city goes through a Wende (a sort of anarchist “
Purge”).
- Farragut’s thoughts: We’ve read Sterling before in Science Fiction. Eddy is a misguided libertarian creep who won’t stop hitting on his German bodyguard and is too dumb to understand the philosophical points that the Cultural Critic is making (for that matter, I’m too dumb to understand, too). He survives his time in Germany, but has learned nothing of value for his punk attitude. What’s the point of rebelling if you don’t understand why? The naivete and creepiness were a little too much for me.
- fanny’s thoughts: This did not work for me. Eddy is creepy and annoying. He keeps hitting on the bodyguard and she makes it VERY clear she is only there in a professional context. Eddy also seems to generally not have any clue what he is doing. He is libertarian and against something but no one seems to know what. He doesn't even seem to know what he delivered to the Cultural Critic.
“The Yuletide Cyberpunk Yarn, or Christmas_Eve-117.DIR” by Victor Pelevin (1996, translated from Russian by Alex Shvartsman)
A corrupt mayor’s computer is infected by a virus that causes chaos in Russia.
- Special Guest Ruin: This was a fascinating story to read. The way the narrative segued from a discussion on poetry to a darkly comedic look at a Russian city was remarkable. The author seems to like to start or lead with a theme or themes which seem to be only tangentially related to each other such as for example the name of the computer virus, or Gerasimov and his dog. But both elements circle back into the story and are crucial to its structure. As for the content of the story itself, I amused myself by imagining the events as being a movie that blended the stylistic elements of Tarantino and Wes Anderson. So we have brutal, bloody violence in increasingly absurd settings and the way it is all described makes it easy to imagine it all taking place amidst the highly stylized sets and characters we would expect in a Wes Anderson movie. Overall, I really enjoyed this story.
- Farragut: We’ve read Pelevin before in Modern Fantasy. First of all, this is a fantastic title for a story, period. Second of all, I just enjoyed Pelevin’s style here (via Shvartsman’s translation), with an omniscient narrator telling us about a completely ridiculous situation. It gets a little cagey with the identity of the perpetrator and the ending, but I’m very curious as to how darkly I should read it (now that I think about it, it’s directly connected to the original, so I should read it very darkly indeed). Shvartsman’s occasional footnotes were very helpful, however, especially with the context surrounding Gerasim(ov) and Mumu.
- fanny: Ruin's review is so good, I am not sure what to add. The style of this story fit the elements so well. It starts with a poem whose themes carry through the story. The footnotes were a really great addition and helped contextualize. The narrator keeps upping the ridiculousness until we get to the end and everything gets wrapped up.
“Wonderama” by Bef (1998, translated from Spanish by the author)
Lalo (or is it Eduardo?) wakes up every day in the most awesome life in 1974, but it’s revealed to be a lie and ends tragically.
- Farragut: Bef is a Mexican SF writer, a crime writer, and a graphic novelist, and honestly his whole bibliography sounds cool as heck. Told in a series of diary entries with some small interruptions, we follow a kid whose life is like a Mexican kid’s sugar-fueled dream. The reason for its inclusion in this thematic section of the anthology becomes clear however, and I yelled, “Noooo!” at the ending. Sigh. It’s very good!
- fanny: I am a sucker for diary entry style stories and this was no exception. Lalo’s life seems almost perfect, but it feels so off. The story feels progressively more off until we start to question everything. Also, yelled “Nooo!” at the ending. Very good. Absolutely loved.
“comp.basilisk FAQ” by David Langford (1999) (
link to story)
A FAQ-style story that clearly describes a bizarre future where images on the web and TV are banned due to the risk of death.
- Farragut: Langford is famous for having the most Hugo wins (29), mostly for the Fan Writer category, but also Short Story (not this one) and Best Related Work (not this one either). This is a delightful story that made me think of it as a precursor to qntm’s later story “Lena” from Week 5 (though obviously only in general form). Apparently I love the faux-nonfiction style where some of the horror and plot is between the lines. The final FAQ about Microsoft was darkly funny.
- fanny: This was fun and very short. The FAQs related to basilisk and writing were great. It goes between funny, dark humor, and just dark. I liked the commentary on technology and software. I also really appreciate the standard response answers explaining they should post someone else. This is something I deal with often and this was great.
“Spider's Nest” by Myra Çakan (2004, translated from German by Jim Young; also available in the anthology
The Apex Book of World SF 3 edited by Lavie Tidhar)
Spider, uh, does something? Is looking for drugs, maybe? But something else happens instead?
- Farragut: Çakan is a German writer from Hamburg, and after reading this story, I’d say Shurin made hamburger out of me, too. The main thing I got out of this story was that Spider really wanted something, maybe. I thought it was drugs, but he got angry at his dealer and then got super weird with his friend’s girlfriend? And then there was a Silver Spider, who wasn’t him, but maybe he plugged himself in to replace her? What is happening?
- fanny: Spider definitely wanted drugs from his dealer, Ant. I think. Ant got annoyed at something then Spider got into a voyeur situation (maybe). There is a Silver Spider in his dreams that makes him feel better. I couldn't tell if this was dream or drug induced or technology induced. The end is super weird and makes even less sense than the story. Spider might have done a murder on himself? I have been confused before in this anthology, but not to this level.
That’s it for this week! Check back the same time next week where we’ll be reading and discussing "The Last American" by John Kessel, "Earth Hour" by Ken MacLeod, "Violation of the TrueNet Security Act" by Taiyo Fujii, "Twelve Minutes to Vinh Quang" by T. R. Napper, and "Operation Daniel" by Khalid Kaki.

2024.05.21 14:23 Meegainnyc According to the Express UK today: "Prince Harry breaks silence after taking free flights from 'fugitive airline boss'...In summary: It's not our fault, had nothing to do with it, blame the Nigerian Chief of Defense Staff. We blindly allowed stupid people to handle our sacred securitaaay...SURE BOSS
2024.05.21 14:23 TurquoiseOrange The hot girl gets the guy then dumps him because he won't give her space, the shy girl shaves her head and goes to the school dance, the happy couple accidentally get pregnant and keep the baby and get married. Cathy, Johny, Mark...
I've posted about this book series once before but I'm trying again.
There were approximately 5-6 teenage friends, pretty sure in the USA, high school age, more than 3 books, all learning lessons and having ordinary teen dramas, I'm not sure when the book was set but it's in a time when school dances already exist but getting married really young just because you're pregnant hasn't fallen out of fashion (due to cultural differences I don't know when this might be). There must be a 100 books like it. I got the set for free at a car boot sale in the UK in about 2005 and they looked pretty battered, some sort of bright cartoonish drawings of the characters on the front.
The main characteit girl of the group I can't remember her name, but she has a best friend who I'm almost certain is called Cathy. There at least two other central characters, they are in true love. Somone is call Mark, it's either the happy-couple male or Cathy's crush or another friend.
The it girl likes a hot boy, and eventually they do get together, I think his name might be Johny. Johny is a bit of a bad boy, an eventually this becomes uncool for his it girl gf because turns out she can't hang out EVERY DAY and she wants to get some homework done. It's part of a 'standing up for yourself' and not letting other people define who you are kind of arc, neither of them is bad their relationship just isn't perfect or long lasting just because they're 16 and hot.
Cathy has a crush, I can't remember who he is but they don't get together. She has a whole arc about being a push over. Cathy eventually shaves her head to prove she's super bad ass and doesn't need any of their approval, everyone is super impressed. There's this whole elaborate scene where her best friend adorns her with scarves and sparkley jewellery to femme up her bad ass look for the school dance and everyone agrees it goes well.
The happy couple pair have some complex stuff going on, then in the final book the young woman is pregnant and they end up getting married and moving into one of the parent's houses in a modified apartment, and it's seen as an amazing solution. I'm not certain if they get married in secret before the parents find out.
Oh god what else can I add, I really don't know. Fingers crossed.
