2024.05.21 16:46 Maybe_once_more Which machine would you recommend? Brother sq9285 or CS7205
Inb4: not much of quality or choice on marketplace in my area & my price range is $200 - $250. I will explain my sewing needs at the end of the post.
The 2 machines in my price range that I've come down to are:
Brother sq9285 - currently priced at $230 at Walmart.
Brother CS7205 - currently priced the same at Joanne $230. However, their website says it's on sale from an original price of $360.
From what I see these two machines are almost identical, I need to do a side by side on my pc and I am doing that next but I really don't know what makes of breaks the difference in these 2 machines since this is my first time buying one. These seem like the best options in my price range right now, and I need help deciding. The msrp on the CS7205 leads me to think this may be a better machine and I should snag that deal, however I would like to defer to more experienced folks like you before I make my decision. Singer has a few others in my price range but many reviews I've watched about machines in this price range seem to lean towards the brother machines. So tell me, what am I looking for? Which is better & why? What makes it better?
What I plan on using it for: I've lost weight and want to do some simple tailoring, eventually maybe some more complex stuff but I'm starting with t-shirts I don't like to practice before I move onto anything I want to keep. I am also very tall, and the tall section doesn't stock much of the smaller sizes. I would like to be able to grab a larger size that has the length I need and bring it in to fit me when I see something I like in stores it's rare to find my size! I also enjoy making custom Halloween costumes and potentially some cosplay stuff that will greatly benefit from learning to use a sewing machine. Maybe also sewing/making some custom Christmas gifts for my neices.

2024.05.21 12:09 Exciting_Repair Power steering pump Mercury Verado 300
Hi everyone,
I have a problem, and I would be thankfull to recieve some suggestions what to do and if anyone could help with some part numbers / drawings.
The story goes like this.. I bought a brand new Mercury Verado 300 from Germany last month. As I am from Croatia I hired a delivery company to deliver it directly to the local Mercury service in my city.
The packages came about 10 days ago, and the guy from Mercury opened the boxes and told us initially that everything is there.
Worth of mentioning that the invoice and delivery (dispatch) note were missing when we opened the package. We eventually recieved the invoice online from the German company, but never the delivery note.
When guys from Mercury started mounting the outboard and the whole installation yesterday, they told me that 3 things are eventually missing:
- The chromium ring for the speedometer
- The power cable for the power steering pump that goes from the steering pump (jack end) to the battery poles (+/-)
- The communication (signal) cable for the steering pump that goes from the steering pump to the outboard (jack-jack)
I am not sure what to do. I would be thankfull if someone could share the part numbers or drawings for these components. It is a newer type of power steering pump ehich has this jack connectors everywhere. I already paid for those cables and the ring as they all come with the outboard.
The guy from Germany is very very unproffesional and rude from the beginning acting as I bought a toy worth €10, not an outboard worth more than €30k. He just told me that he sent everything and that he is done with a deal. He also stated that I should have collected the packages on my own to be sure everything is there. On my question where is the delivery note, he replied that they don't send that to their costumers (WTF?). In the big box were 30 smaller packages with cables, devices, components, etc. I never recieved a bigger box that contains more than one item without a delivery note inside the big box.
On the other hand Mercury service is telling me that the cables were not recieved, but I not sure if I can trust them neither. They figured that out after initially stating that everything is there, and told me that those two cables cost additionally €350 and they have to come again on the boat for extra cost of course.
Please help me!
P.S. I would like to publicly address Menken BootsCenter company from Gersthofen (Augsburg) and its representative Michael Menken as highly unprofessional and unreliable. Their customer support is non-existent, and their after-sales support rates a negative ten. They show no interest in resolving issues, respond very slowly, and display extremely arrogant behavior from the start.
Best regards,
Dom

2024.05.21 04:15 DutyTop8086 Your 2024 Guide to Success with Amazon FBA Reselling
Embark on Your Amazon Reselling Adventure
Step into the dynamic realm of Amazon reselling, where opportunities abound, and innovation drives success. This comprehensive guide will reveal the strategies to navigate guidelines, overcome restrictions, and master best practices for unparalleled achievements.
Picture a vibrant marketplace where your entrepreneurial dreams can take flight—a space where small and medium-sized businesses thrive. In 2022, independent sellers in Amazon’s U.S. store sold over 4.1 billion products, with average sales reaching an impressive $230,000. This isn't just an aspiration; it's a reality waiting for you to grasp.
Your journey begins with essential questions: Where can you source items to resell on Amazon? How can you turn branded products into profitable ventures? This guide serves as your roadmap, offering a step-by-step approach to building a successful reselling empire in the expansive Amazon marketplace.
Understanding Reselling
Reselling goes beyond a mere business model; it's a refined craft. It's about unearthing valuable items from unexpected sources and offering them to eager buyers. Here’s your strategic guide:
- Research Product Demand:
- Market Analysis: Dive deep into current market trends and consumer preferences. Use tools like Jungle Scout, Helium 10, and Google Trends to identify products with high demand and low competition.
- Competitor Analysis: Study your competitors to understand their pricing strategies, customer reviews, and sales volumes. This will help you identify gaps in the market and potential opportunities.
- Seasonal Trends: Keep an eye on seasonal trends and upcoming events that could boost demand for specific products.
- Procure the Products:
- Reliable Suppliers: Establish relationships with reputable suppliers and wholesalers. Websites like Alibaba, SaleHoo, and local trade shows can be excellent sources.
- Quality Control: Always inspect the quality of the products before purchasing in bulk. Request samples if possible to ensure they meet your standards.
- Negotiation: Don't hesitate to negotiate prices and terms with suppliers to maximize your profit margins.
- List the Products Online:
- Product Listings: Create detailed and compelling product listings. Use high-quality images, thorough descriptions, and relevant keywords to improve your visibility on Amazon.
- Competitive Pricing: Research the pricing strategies of similar products and set competitive prices. Consider using dynamic pricing tools to adjust your prices based on market conditions.
- SEO Optimization: Optimize your product listings for search engines by incorporating relevant keywords, bullet points, and customer reviews.
- Handle Shipping and Fulfillment:
- Self-Fulfillment: If you choose to handle shipping yourself, ensure you have a reliable system in place for packaging, labeling, and dispatching orders promptly.
- Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA): Alternatively, you can use Amazon’s FBA service, where Amazon handles storage, packing, and shipping. This can save you time and provide faster delivery options to your customers, but consider the costs involved.
- Manage Inventory and Customer Service:
- Inventory Management: Keep track of your stock levels to avoid overselling or stockouts. Use inventory management software to automate the process and forecast future needs.
- Customer Service: Provide exceptional customer service by responding to inquiries promptly, addressing issues efficiently, and ensuring customer satisfaction. Positive reviews and ratings can significantly impact your sales.
- Returns and Refunds: Have a clear policy for returns and refunds. Handle returns professionally to maintain a good reputation and build trust with your customers.
By mastering these aspects of reselling, you'll be well-equipped to transform your business into a thriving venture on Amazon.
Decoding Profit Margin
Profit margin isn’t just a figure; it’s the heartbeat of your reselling venture. It determines whether your business merely survives or truly thrives. Here’s how to strike the perfect balance between competitive pricing and maintaining a healthy profit margin to ensure your reselling dreams stay afloat:
- Understanding Profit Margin:
- Gross Profit Margin: This is the difference between the selling price and the cost of goods sold (COGS), expressed as a percentage. It reflects the profitability of your products before accounting for other expenses.
- Net Profit Margin: This includes all expenses, such as shipping, fulfillment fees, advertising, and other operational costs. It's the true measure of your business’s profitability.
- Calculating Your Profit Margin:
- Formula:
- Gross Profit Margin = [(Selling Price - COGS) / Selling Price] x 100
- Net Profit Margin = [(Selling Price - Total Expenses) / Selling Price] x 100
- Example: If you sell a product for $100, and the COGS is $60, your gross profit margin is 40%. After including $20 for other expenses, your net profit margin would be 20%.
- Balancing Pricing and Profit:
- Competitive Pricing: Research your competitors to set a price that is attractive to customers while still allowing you to make a profit. Avoid the temptation to underprice your products significantly, as this can erode your profit margins.
- Value Proposition: Justify higher prices by emphasizing the unique value your products offer, such as superior quality, better customer service, or additional features.
- Reducing Costs:
- Bulk Purchasing: Buying in larger quantities can lower your COGS due to discounts from suppliers.
- Streamlined Operations: Use efficient inventory management and fulfillment processes to reduce operational costs.
- Shipping Options: Explore various shipping methods to find cost-effective solutions that do not compromise delivery speed.
- Monitoring and Adjusting:
- Regular Reviews: Frequently review your profit margins to identify trends and make adjustments as needed. This could involve tweaking prices, negotiating better deals with suppliers, or finding ways to cut operational costs.
- Dynamic Pricing: Consider using dynamic pricing strategies that adjust based on market demand, competition, and inventory levels.
By carefully managing your profit margins, you ensure that your reselling business remains profitable and sustainable in the long run.
Is Reselling Your Calling?
Reselling appeals to those with a keen eye for lucrative opportunities, particularly in the following areas:
- Limited-Availability Items:
- Scarcity Power: Capitalize on the limited availability of certain products. When demand outstrips supply, prices can soar, allowing you to turn a tidy profit.
- Examples: Limited-edition sneakers, concert tickets, or special collaboration items.
- Exclusive or Rare Items:
- Rare Collectibles: Seek out and sell rare collectibles, vintage treasures, and unique artworks. These items often attract discerning buyers willing to pay a premium.
- Examples: Antique furniture, rare coins, vintage clothing, and limited-edition art prints.
- Seasonal Products:
- Seasonal Waves: Leverage the high demand for seasonal items, such as holiday decorations, outdoor gear, and summer accessories. Timing is crucial to maximize sales during peak seasons.
- Examples: Christmas lights, Halloween costumes, summer camping gear, and winter sports equipment.
- Clearance or Discounted Items:
- Discounted Deals: Purchase items on clearance or at a discount and resell them at market value. This strategy allows you to profit from the price difference.
- Examples: End-of-season clothing, overstock electronics, and discounted home goods.
- High-Demand Products:
- Trending Items: Maintain a steady supply of trending products that are in high demand. Selling these items at competitive prices ensures a consistent flow of sales.
- Examples: Popular tech gadgets, fitness equipment, beauty products, and fashionable accessories.
If you possess the knack for identifying these opportunities, reselling could be your calling. It’s about recognizing value where others might not and delivering that value to eager buyers, ultimately transforming your skills into a profitable venture.
Setting Sail with an Amazon Seller Account
Embark on your reselling adventure by choosing the right Amazon seller plan to suit your needs:
- Individual Plan:
- Cost: $0.99 per product sold plus applicable selling fees.
- Ideal For: Those just starting out or selling in smaller quantities.
- Advantages: Low upfront cost, making it perfect for testing the waters without significant financial commitment.
- Professional Plan:
- Cost: $39.99 per month plus applicable selling fees.
- Ideal For: Sellers with higher sales volumes or more extensive inventory.
- Advantages: Access to advanced selling tools, eligibility for top placement on product detail pages, and the ability to sell in restricted categories.
Choosing the Right Plan
Evaluate your inventory size and sales expectations to determine the best plan for you. Here are some key considerations:
- Sales Volume: If you plan to sell more than 40 items per month, the Professional Plan may be more cost-effective.
- Advanced Features: The Professional Plan offers additional features like bulk listing, detailed sales reports, and promotions.
- Category Restrictions: Some categories require a Professional Plan to list items.
Utilize Amazon’s Tools
To maximize your profitability, leverage Amazon’s free tools:
- Fulfillment Cost Calculator: Use this tool to estimate your revenue potential by calculating fees for storage, fulfillment, and shipping. This helps you make informed decisions about pricing and profitability.
By carefully selecting the right seller plan and utilizing Amazon’s resources, you can set sail on a successful reselling journey, navigating the vast Amazon marketplace with confidence.
The Art of Retail Arbitrage Retail arbitrage is the thrill of the hunt, buying low and selling high. Navigate this path with care, adhering to Amazon’s selling guidelines and securing necessary documents like invoices. Calculate margins meticulously to ensure your efforts yield treasure, not toil.

5. Handle Shipping and Fulfillment
Selecting the right fulfillment method is crucial for the efficiency and success of your reselling business. Here are the two primary options:
Choose Fulfillment Method
Merchant Fulfillment:
- Overview: You handle all aspects of storage, packaging, and shipping yourself.
- Advantages:
- Control: You have complete control over your inventory, packaging, and shipping processes.
- Customization: You can customize packaging and include personalized notes or branding materials in your shipments.
- Cost Management: Potentially lower costs if you have an efficient system and low overhead.
- Considerations:
- Time and Effort: Managing fulfillment can be time-consuming and labor-intensive, especially as your business grows.
- Scalability: As order volumes increase, handling fulfillment in-house can become challenging.
Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA):
- Overview: Amazon takes care of storage, packaging, shipping, and customer service on your behalf.
- Advantages:
- Convenience: Amazon handles the logistics, allowing you to focus on other aspects of your business.
- Prime Eligibility: Products fulfilled by Amazon are eligible for Amazon Prime, which can increase your sales by attracting Prime members.
- Customer Service: Amazon provides customer service and handles returns, improving the overall customer experience.
- Scalability: FBA can easily scale with your business, handling large volumes of orders efficiently.
- Considerations:
- Fees: FBA comes with storage and fulfillment fees, which can add up, especially for low-margin items.
- Less Control: You have less control over the packaging and shipping process, which might affect how your brand is presented.
6. Drive Sales
To boost your sales and make a mark in the competitive Amazon marketplace, follow these key strategies:
Differentiate Yourself
- Know Your Audience: Take the time to understand who your customers are, what they want, and how they shop. Use this knowledge to tailor your product offerings and marketing efforts.
- Stand Out: Use advanced ecommerce tools and unique selling propositions (USPs) to set your business apart from the competition. Whether it’s exceptional customer service, unique product features, or a compelling brand story, make sure your business has something special to offer.
Amazon Advertising
- Sponsored Products: Increase your product visibility by investing in Sponsored Products ads. These appear in search results and on product detail pages, helping you reach more customers.
- Sponsored Brands: Showcase your brand and product portfolio with Sponsored Brands ads. These banner ads appear at the top of search results, highlighting your brand and multiple products.
- Sponsored Display: Use Sponsored Display ads to target customers both on and off Amazon, keeping your products in front of potential buyers as they browse the web.
Social Media Marketing
- Instagram: Share visually appealing posts and stories about your products, engage with followers through comments and direct messages, and use Instagram Shopping to make it easy for users to buy directly from your posts.
- Facebook: Create a Facebook Page for your business, post regularly to keep your audience engaged, and use Facebook Ads to target specific demographics.
- TikTok: Tap into the viral potential of TikTok by creating fun and engaging short videos that showcase your products. Collaborate with influencers to reach a wider audience.
Customer Reviews
- Encourage Reviews: After a purchase, kindly ask customers to leave a review. Highlight the importance of their feedback in improving your products and services.
- Enhance Credibility: Positive reviews build trust and credibility, making potential buyers more likely to choose your products.
- Respond to Feedback: Engage with customer reviews by thanking them for positive feedback and addressing any concerns or issues raised in negative reviews. This shows that you value your customers and are committed to providing excellent service.

Well in Marvel we done have Superman and Batman Hierarchy are do we.... Short answer in Marvel Comics never Stan Lee championed making sure he captivated imagination of all races, all demographics. MCU isn't the same they will give you buzz with LGBTQ takes on character, empowerment of day scenes, and Black malecharacters scenes that stand up to society's issues, lightly...(Captain America & Winter soldier I am talking to you.)
Overall mostly they fail to deliver to African Americans, Hindu, males with how they portray characters, they show them often as weak, limelight loving, that don't fully grasp station as hero or loyalty to their team. BS you say? Would a King let a faction fight a war on his soil that harmed his people, would he give power to foreign Generals over his own General's, in affect being disloyal and untrusting of their years and years of training, knowledge of geography, tactical advantages on Homeland soil. Never! They reduced a King to a servant or the Avengers and didn't showcase his power, knowledge, his own unique character prowess on par with Tony as with Tony over many Arcs, and gave more line to Hawkeye over many movies and then didn't recast to fix it either like they will look at the actor over our crap writing and producing in the cinematic universe. So as a hero aside from, his Sister, a mineral, and a female royal guard....his rival had to become his general, and his childhodfriend rival for a second in deep weaknesses for justice, which the King had in going after Bucky after death of his own father......Which brings me to a point seen now if you watch all Black Panther related movies....They made him a hypocrite, disgrace as he open door to have his Kingdom, Mother, and People suffer at hands of Namor, and left the women to it where only his rival showed backbone to be a fighter for people and country no matter the price or stakes like a King. We got a lot of chase scenes, I get my butt kicked but come back for more and win, as he didn't even deliver the enemy of state, Kill monger did and yeah....they made him King after he put them paws on the Black Panther
Hindu people we won't even talk about the Eternals, and they didn't do males any favors in any Ms Marvel anything. We already stated that in the comics they balance out the representation, like you have a Norse God, Blonde hair blue eye and a Blonde blue eye Captain Marvel as all powerful in MCU, but in Comics, Monica Rambeau is on same level and Black Panther has bettered Captain America, Wolverine, Moonknight, and held Thor's hammer, and welded the infinity gauntlet. Captain America being the Superman in Hierarchy of MCU, is on even par with this guy. Unfortunately never in the 616, will he get recast our we see this version, as certain fans don't get what they want, but you can get Jackman back, Henry Cavil in MCU, even the fan casts like Mr.Fantastic. Then get hey we know you want him as Black Panther but come see him as Wonder Man, saying I would rather change the race of a character than go through a summer see black kids doing Wakanda salutes, wearing costumes like the kids in 50s would tie towels around their neck and play hero. Saying the actor matters more than character.
Radio Superman and Comic book fought the KKK and help diminish its appeal, hard to go to that meet when you kid proudly take turn playing Superman to beat the Klanman, you realize I am not the Hero. In the ideallic childhood play that shapes soldiers, police, firefighters, good citizenns, your child thinks the club you with is the Indians in Cowboys & Indians. The side they believe is evil. This literally happened so represention, character, and story arc and evolution matters. They didn't let Superman get to a point and let Super girl or Lois finish it....No they need to story to resonate in the hearts of minds of men.
So the problem is the story they want to resonate, we could a changing effect but don't care for it to resonate in certain demographics, or you could denounce gangs, drug dealing, violence, even rape and gang rape in other countries by speaking to the ideallic minds and having it ask the adult minds who am I, if my child sees what I am doing or apart of as evil.
Marvel Comics stood for that...MCU, Kevin, and others....must don't are we would see it in their view of a universe.

2024.05.20 15:30 kromero217 Merchant is threatening me after I filed a dispute
I purchased some costume gold jewelry from a company I kept seeing ads for on social media. I purchased three rings, and used a promo code that was listed as their current promo on the website. Got the order, one of the rings I felt was misrepresented (it was a curb link style ring but arrived with no "structure" - I'm not explaining it very well, but I'll post pics). Anyway, I contacted them to initiate a return on that item and they immediately responded telling me that unfortunately since I used a promo code on the purchase, this makes my sale a final sale and I could only return for a store credit.
I responded telling them that was the scammiest policy I had ever encountered (literally, in my whole life, I've never encountered another business that has this type of policy)! and that the item was misrepresented and I would be reporting them to the BBB.
They then came back and insulted me telling me that it's common sense to read all the terms and conditions prior to making a purchase, and that "I was certainly happy to get 30% off.....". So I contacted my bank, explained the situation and why I felt the item was misrepresented, and they advised I could and should file a dispute for that one item under the category of "misrepresented merchandise", which I did. We are talking about a $35 costume jewelry ring here.
Now they are emailing me telling me that they will report me to the credit bureau and file a police report for fraud because I'm keeping the item and "just because I don't like their return policy doesn't entitle me to keep free merchandise". I told them I'd happily return the item for a full refund, but they didn't respond to that and just keep threatening me with a police report and reporting to the credit bureau.
I've reached back out to my bank to let them know about the recent communication, but I don't know what else I should do. Should I stop responding to them? If Visa has an entire category for misrepresented items, I just think Visa will investigate and they'll either rule in my favor or they won't. Are these just scare tactics they're trying to use against me?
I really wish I would have searched them up before making a purchase, because they have an F rating on BBB because of this exact type of thing.

Reviews https://preview.redd.it/c61k71pxyi1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=05d07654ea4e380ca0957f15d172b65e968402dc I recently stumbled upon the Toy Uzi Machine Gun, and let me tell you, it certainly caught my attention. At first glance, it looked like a cool, high-powered toy gun but as I took it out of the box, I found it to be quite different from what was advertised. Instead of a high-powered machine gun, it was just a noise-making toy. Despite this initial disappointment, once I got it into my son's hands, it became an instant hit. The toy made a ton of noise and was incredibly fun for him to play with. We were surprised by how entertaining it was, considering its simplicity. The Uzi Bb Guns really managed to capture the essence of a noisy water gun. The highlights of this toy are its ease of use and the fun that comes with its unique design. However, not everyone seems to be happy with what it actually delivers. Some customers have reported receiving products that weren't what was advertised. We hope the company addresses these concerns moving forward, as it's definitely an amusing toy in the hands of a child. Overall, it's a good choice if you want something a bit different that still provides some fun. https://preview.redd.it/wbtura5yyi1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9b8ee1cb2cc35140d3f7d1188d98ab98e2cda27d I recently had a chance to try out this Gun Toys for Boys Combat Military Mission Machine Gun Toy, and it was quite an experience! The first thing I noticed was the awesome LED flashing lights and sound effects it comes equipped with. It's not your ordinary toy gun – it's a fully immersive military mission toy that can keep your kid entertained for hours! In my hands, the toy felt sturdy and well-made, which is always a good sign. The scope for aiming and the gun's stand to keep it steady were thoughtful additions to the toy. But let's be honest, the highlight of this toy gun is the rotating bullet feature – it just adds that extra oomph to the playtime! Now, as much as I enjoyed playing with this Gun Toys for Boys Combat Military Mission Machine Gun Toy, I could see that it might not be for everyone. For parents who are concerned about safety or prefer toys that are more low-key, this toy gun might be a bit too intense. And while it's easy to assemble, some kids might find it a bit challenging to put together on their own. All in all, this Gun Toys for Boys Combat Military Mission Machine Gun Toy is a fascinating addition to any kid's toy collection. It's perfect for those who love an adventure and are looking for something a bit more daring. https://preview.redd.it/fwvgbmjyyi1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0ea0c178e6716707dac2de5ca19c733841734f41 I recently got my hands on the Denix Replicas 1081 Walther P. 38 Automatic Pistol and I have to say, it's a real treat for history enthusiasts! The detailed recreation of this iconic WWII weapon is impressive, and it's not just for show. It's heavier than one might expect, which gives it a solid feel in the hand. The pistol-like click of the slide and the smoothness of the mechanism make it a joy to handle, even if it's not fireable. However, there are some minor drawbacks, like the fact that the slide doesn't lock back and the magazine can't be removed. But considering this is a replica for display purposes rather than practical use, it's not much of a hindrance. It's a conversation starter and a great way to add a piece of history to your collection. https://preview.redd.it/bodiz0wyyi1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f0208f12a4164896e7e2d9d1eca362d676accfc1 As someone who's always been fascinated by the era of the Old West, I couldn't resist trying out this non-firing replica of the 1869 Army Revolver. Featuring a sleek nickel silver finish, this replica brought me back to the iconic "Cowboy" days. Handling the replica felt like holding a piece of history, with the original's "single action" and "top break" mechanisms. It even had the added bonus of being a non-firing model, which meant I didn't have to worry about accidentally accidentally discharging it. However, the size and weight of the replica were a bit more challenging to deal with, given that it's a faithful replica of the original. Despite this, I appreciated the fact that it gave me a better understanding of the real gun without the need to purchase one. All in all, the Denix 1869 Army Revolver replica is a solid choice for anyone looking to step into the boots of a "Cowboy" in the Old West. Just be prepared to handle its size and weight! https://preview.redd.it/rg8gtjazyi1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=140252e37d437c318131ca5d46379e3066696be2 My experience with this pretend AK47 Machine Gun was nothing short of entertaining. The vibrant orange and green colors definitely added a fun touch to any activity, whether it was for a party or just plain old giggles. It was easy to grip and felt lightweight, making it perfect for kids to play with. One of the standout features of this gun was the shooting sound it made while the trigger was engaged. It was a fun addition to the overall experience and added that extra element of excitement. However, I did notice that the length of the gun was shorter than the real thing, which might be a slight inconvenience for some users. When it comes to taking care of it, I found the hand-washing instructions to be straightforward and easy to follow. The cold water and mild soap combo seemed effective in maintaining its appearance. Overall, this pretend AK47 Machine Gun provided a lot of fun and entertainment for both kids and adults. With its vivid colors, exciting sound effects, and easy-to-handle design, it definitely stands out as a popular choice for dress-up activities and playtime. https://preview.redd.it/5oz7finzyi1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f41ab0c91974a2042bcec5f74d1b9d75362d94c4 I recently got my hands on the latest Electronic Rifle Bolt Action from LatestBuy, and let me tell you, it's a whole lot of fun for kids aged 5 and above. This outdoor toy rifle comes with a real gun sound and a bolt action feature that makes it a perfect choice for young hunters. One of the standout features is the realistic sound it produces, making it an exciting addition to outdoor games. However, the bolt action seemed a bit flimsy, so I would recommend it for smaller kids who can be a bit gentler when using it. Overall, it's a cool toy that can provide hours of enjoyment for little ones. But, be prepared for some inevitable wear-and-tear because that's just part of the adventure. https://preview.redd.it/xczbq670zi1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2b517281b09cb9d6bb3c3292d28e24f01b3a265c As someone who's always enjoyed collecting army men, I was excited to try out these BMC Classic MPC Machine Guns in black and silver gray. The size of the weapons, approximately 3 inches long, allows for a perfect balance between detail and playability, which has been an important aspect for me in any army men set I've had. The set includes 8 black and 8 silver gray M2 Browning. 50 Caliber Air-cooled Machine Guns with removable ammo and mounted on sturdy tripods. It's a nice touch that the ammo is removable, as it adds an extra level of customization to the toys. The black and silver grey colors give the set a distinctive look that stands out from other army men sets I've seen. However, there could be some room for improvement. The set could benefit from a more sturdy packaging, like a plastic case instead of a polybag with an insert card. This would help protect the guns during transportation and storage, making them a better long-term investment. Additionally, while the size is great for play, it might hinder their display capabilities, as they may not fit perfectly on shelves or display cases. Overall, these MPC Machine Guns have been a fun addition to my collection and serve as a great example of how well-designed, detailed, and customizable army men can be. Buyer's Guide When looking for a cheap automatic gun, there are several factors to consider to ensure that you get the best value for your money. Remember, the price of a gun should not be the only determining factor in your decision. 1. Purpose Firstly, you need to identify the primary purpose of acquiring an automatic gun. Is it for self-defense, target practice, or maybe even hunting? Your purpose will dictate your choice of firearm, and help determine if you'll need specific features and calibers. https://preview.redd.it/yclkkin0zi1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=47926e98f552ebe63ad5f6a87511f047d5851842 2. Caliber Considerations for the caliber of the automatic gun are crucial. Lighter calibers such as. 22 LR or. 380 ACP are commonly preferred for their low recoil and cost-effectiveness. However, higher-caliber guns like. 38 Special or 9mm may provide better stopping power. 3. Capacity The capacity of the gun's magazine plays a significant role in its performance. Higher-capacity magazines mean fewer trips to the range or fewer reloads in the field. While larger capacity may be your preference, it is essential to consider the ease of loading and unloading. 4. Action Type Automatic guns primarily come in two types of actions: blowback and recoil-operated. Blowback guns are cheaper and easier to maintain, while recoil-operated guns offer better reliability and are generally more accurate. Factors such as durability, ease of use, and personal preference should guide your decision. https://preview.redd.it/grc6n451zi1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2ecafbcd516c8576928ab6a4c3d1b70d972b90b3 5. Brand Reputation While the price of a gun is a factor, it should not be the only consideration. It is crucial to choose a brand with a strong reputation, as it signifies quality and reliability. Researching brands with a proven track record in manufacturing firearms can be a helpful starting point. 6. After-Sales Support Ask about after-sales support. It is imperative to know that you can easily obtain replacement parts, repair services, or even additional magazines, should the need arise. 7. Legal and Safety Regulations Lastly, ensure that the automatic gun you choose complies with all local, state, and federal laws. Additionally, adhere to proper safety guidelines and always store firearms securely, especially in the presence of children. https://preview.redd.it/pcz07si1zi1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c507d3aaa5248a4829eddeceac6ed3c0e0f00c86 Final Word Choosing a cheap automatic gun may seem like a daunting task. 2024.05.19 20:37 Shiirooo Exclusive interview with Famitsu and the devs
| https://www.famitsu.com/article/202405/5194 (translated by DeepL: there are probably translation errors) Shadows is the next step forward for Assassin's Creed Mr. KARL ONNÉE, Producer --First of all, let me say "Thank you" from us Japanese, as "Assassin's Creed" is finally coming out, which is set in Japan! KARL: Thank you for coming here today. I have been wanting to do this work for years, so my dream has come true. --Why did you choose the Azuchi-Momoyama period as the setting for this work? KARL: I chose it because it is a very rich period in history. It was a time of war and political maneuvering, a time of change from rural to urban areas, and also the birth of art. I also chose it because it was the start of the unification of Japan. It was a pivotal moment for Japan. Together, these elements provided an excellent canvas on which to tell the story. --What kind of image do you have of the Azuchi-Momoyama period? KARL: This was a time when the feudal lords of the warring states were fighting for power in the name of unifying the country, but it was also a struggle for control of trade. Portuguese missionaries and merchants came to Japan together. The Portuguese missionaries and merchants came to Japan together, and people who wanted a beautiful country and peace. This is the kind of image we have, but I think there was a mixture of various cultures and people's thoughts. And of course, there were the warring feudal lords. These are great canvases for the story. --What do you think should be inherited from "Assassin's Creed" and what are the unique aspects of this game? KARL: When people think of "Assassin's Creed," they think of stealth, but shinobi fantasy is not only a perfect fit for an "Assassin's Creed" game, it also fits the DNA of the "Assassin" brand. What we wanted to do with "Assassin's Creed Shadows" was to push stealth even further. We started this effort with the previous game, "Assassin's Creed Mirage," but we wanted to take it further with new features. Systems such as light and shadow, grappling ropes, prone, and a variety of tools available in the game provide a new experience. The gameplay is also enriched by two characters, Naoe, a shinobi, and Yasuke, a samurai. Players will explore and discover Japan through the eyes of Naoe, a local, and one non-Japanese outsider. The game is more dynamic than ever before, pushing the limits of technology and offering an experience exclusive to current-gen consoles. --The "Assassin's Creed: Valhalla," released in 2020, is based on the theme of "Vikings" and has been a huge sales success. As a Japanese, I feel that from a global perspective, the Japanese "shinobi" theme is even more niche, but what is your current response? KARL: I would like to talk about how it compares to "Viking" fantasy. Both shinobi and samurai are exciting and celebrated as fantasy with power, and are widely discussed in pop culture, and we are very much inspired by them. Shinobi were on our radar from the beginning because we thought they fit well with the "Assassins" brand, but we felt that incorporating a powerful samurai would create two different gameplay experiences and give us the opportunity to tell the story from two different perspectives. We feel that this is a powerful motif that can compete with the "Viking" motif. --How did you like the setting of Japan as a subject matter for the latest model? KARL: I think it was perfect. For example, the "Global Illumination" technology allowed us to explore the response of light and shadow. Some consoles are still called "Baked GI", but by using dynamic lighting and the power of the new hardware, we were able to explore the creativity. We are now able to express not only light and shadow, but also the dynamism of nature in greater detail. Naturally, since it is set in Japan, we have never dealt with so many trees, and thus so much data, in previous works in the series. We also needed more data to seamlessly move various things at the same time because of the seasonal changes. The latest models have allowed us to realize our vision, and our ambition for this game and for "Assassin's Creed" will continue. --Assassin's Creed Mirage marks the 15th anniversary of the game. Can we consider this work as the next step forward for the next generation of "Assassin's Creed"? KARL: You are absolutely right. Mirage" was a tribute to existing works, but this game is the first step into a new era. We are in the era of modern equipment. With the new generation of our engine "Anvil", plus the opportunity to create a new era by using the power of the latest consoles, we are able to do what we wanted to do with "Assassin's Creed Shadows". With technologies such as global illumination and dynamism, we are now making the game we really wanted to make. --What are the four pillars you are focusing on in the development of this game? KARL: We are focusing on four pillars. - The first is to create an authentic and dynamic world.
- Second is the story, introducing a new form of storytelling to "Assassin's Creed" by introducing two characters with different stories and perspectives.
- Third, there are two different action sequences. Samurai and Shinobi each have their own skills tree elements and unique weapons. For example, in castles, each has a different positioning that they excel at, which makes a big difference in how they play.
- And finally, there is stealth. We are promoting the importance of stealth more than ever with new systems such as light and shadow, objects in the environment, depression, and grappling ropes.
-- The launch is scheduled for November 15, 2024. What is the current development status? KARL: Development is going very well. We are proud to say that we have done a good job, but of course it is not finished and there are still glitches. This is the result of all the work we have done so far. We are very happy with how things are going right now, and we hope you will stay tuned for more news. -- I understand that "Assassin's Creed Infinity" was announced at the previous Ubisoft Forward and that this title will be included in the game? Also, what is the development status of that game at ......? KARL: "Assassin's Creed Infinity" is introduced as an Animus Hub (*a hub that will function in the future as an entry point for the series), which we will talk about at a later date. --What is your message to your fans around the world and in Japan? KARL: We are humbled that our dream of creating a game in this setting has come true. This is a setting that our fans have been anticipating for a long time, and for us it has been a wonderful experience to work on a game that we have always wanted to make. This game is the result of our love. We hope you enjoy it. We look forward to talking more about it in the coming months. The Shinobi Assassin and the Legendary Samurai. Experience the different fighting styles created by these two characters. (left) Mr. JONATHAN DUMONT (Creative Director), (right) Mr. CHARLES BENOIT (Game Director) --When did you start the development of this work? JONATHAN: Development began about four years ago, and research into the time period in which the game is set began immediately. There were a number of cool subjects that brought us great characters and story plots. I had a gut feeling that this was going to be a very good game. --Was the Azuchi-Momoyama period chosen as the period setting from the pre-development stage? Did you have an idea for a major point in Japanese history, such as the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate? JONATHAN: I started from the beginning of my study of Japanese history, but I began reading with the feeling of a student. Following the Socratic principle, you took the attitude of knowing nothing. As I read on, I found some very interesting settings. I focused on the Azuchi-Momoyama period because I felt it was an extremely important period for Japan. It was a time of warring states, the need to unify the country, and the need to defend itself against the growing influence of other countries. It was a grand and complex period, and there are many stories that can be told from different angles. Among the heroes of the unification of Japan, Tokugawa Ieyasu, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Oda Nobunaga are best known among the outstanding characters in Japanese history. Not only war, but also politics are involved, and they are moving toward the peace that will eventually come, with a good ending waiting somewhere in the middle. I strongly felt that this was a wonderful and interesting period that deserved to be featured. It was also a time when the foundations of the arts were laid. Castle towns were built, the world changed, and people's relationships with each other and with art, as well as their inner lives, also changed. It was very interesting to explore this period, and I was strongly attracted to the characters who lived in this time. -- Why did you choose the title "Shadows"? CHARLES: From my point of view, there are two reasons. Shinobi hide in the shadows, so "Shadows" is of course inspired by that. In a way, this embraces the "Assassin" brand and shinobi. There are other aspects to "Shadows" as well. There are "hidden things" in the game that must be discovered by the player, but they are hidden in the darkness in some way. JONATHAN: Both characters are in a way connected to being shadowy heroes living in the underworld of this era. It's a cool title, if you can think of it this way. --Why did you choose two main characters and two fighting styles? Also, what kind of combat action can the Shinobi and Samurai experience respectively? JONATHAN: One of the reasons for the separation of the two styles is that from the beginning of development, we wanted to have two distinct and cool archetypes to play with: the samurai and the shinobi. We also wanted to make sure that this fantasy was as close to reality and expectation as possible without being diluted. I also often felt the need to have two points of view in the development of the story, since history is rarely clearly black and white. The two protagonists provided interesting dynamics and perspectives on how to approach the game. CHARLES: I think it is very interesting that in combat, both the samurai and the shinobi have special types of weapons. Therefore, the style of combat in this work is built on a more weapon-based approach. There are weapons that only Samurai can use, and the same goes for Shinobi. The player can get a good feel for the two different fighting styles. And it is possible to switch between them. --What weapons can Naoe and Yasuke use? CHARLES: Both players have different types of weapons. For Naoe, we went for a more classic fantasy type shinobi. The chain scythe is a weapon that covers a wide area and can only be used by Naoe. In addition, she also has a dagger used at close range, which can be combined with a hidden blade (Hidden Blade). Naoe can fight very quickly and efficiently with these. On the other hand, Yasuke, who excels at overpowering with force, is given more types of weapons, some of which are firearms type weapons. They also have the typical samurai bow. --Why did you choose to make the shinobi Naoe an original character and the samurai Yasuke a historical figure? JONATHAN: Even though they are well known in Japan, at least in North America, not much is known about farmers, what happened to them, and where the Shinobi came from. So we decided to introduce a figure from Iga who is shrouded in mystery. We considered historical figures from the region, but we preferred a sense of mystery, so we came up with Naoe as someone who may or may not have actually existed. As for Yasuke, from the beginning we thought that a story about the arrival of the Portuguese would be a very good way to tell the story of the crisis in Japan. The team liked the character Yasuke, and we thought we could use him to show the promise of discovering Japan. We thought that if we started with a samurai already in Japanese society, he would be a very interesting and intriguing character, with concepts that we don't necessarily know. And it would also be interesting to see what happened to him. He starts out as a character who is already rooted in history, and we are curious to find out what happens to him. I thought they would make a cool team, complementing each other in terms of storytelling, physique, and family background. --What did you keep in mind when creating the scenario where the two main characters switch? What were some of the challenges? JONATHAN: I wanted the audience to feel that "both are the main characters," but this was more complicated than it seems. Their stories overlap in places, but I wanted to make sure that as the game progresses, you gradually discover more and more about both characters. They have similar goals and motivations, but they are not 100% the same, which made it complicated and difficult to maintain their individual personalities. Naturally, the quest can be played by either character. If a quest needs to be started by one character and completed by the other, the settings must accommodate both play styles. Thus, although it can be complicated, there are many opportunities to tell the story from one of the two perspectives. Having two different points of view is a lot of fun, but there were some complications, such as having to use new technology in the conversation tools. There were some cool things, however. It is interesting that in the conversational scenes, the player decides which of the two protagonists speaks and they ask for different things. This is cool in a way. CHARLES: Both characters are attacking the castle and at some point the player is asked if they want to continue with Yasuke or Naoe, both are interesting. At various points the player must make these choices. The stories are independent, so if you want to know more about Naoe's or Yasuke's past, you can play as one character and delve into that character's story. --Are there areas of action that differ, such as places that only Naoe, a shinobi, is allowed to enter? JONATHAN: There are areas where both Naoe and Yasuke have different areas of activity. I can't go into details because there are a few surprises, but since Naoe can use a hooked rope, there are places that are almost exclusively accessible to her. The world is designed to be enjoyed by both characters, and players can switch between the two at will. Of course, if you want to reach the final point of the world or reach the summit through the ruins, then perhaps Naoe is the better choice. However, if you want to break through the fort head-on alone and open the way, Yasuke seems like a better choice. Of course, you can play with either character. CHARLES: Each character also has specific actions. Naoe can hook the hooked rope to a specific spot and move like a pendulum, or hook the hook to a high spot and climb the rope to get to where she wants to go faster than Yasuke. However, Yasuke can use a shoulder bash to break down reinforced doors. Yasuke can also perform parkour very efficiently in a more daring way. What can be felt when Yasuke performs parkour is how the crowd reacts. Because Yasuke is a samurai and exudes dignity as a superior class, the crowd reacts accordingly. Naoe, on the other hand, gives the impression of being more integrated into the world. --Can you both use the Hidden Blade, Hawk's Eye, and other Assassin abilities? CHARLES: Without spoiling anything, the traditional skills of the Assassins are mainly for Naoe. However, there is another mechanism called "Kantori" (provisional name) that can be used when you want to find an enemy or target person, and this can be used by both of them. You can use free aim to look around, but you cannot see through walls. Yasuke can also kill with stealth, but in a more direct and easier way. Even with stealth, there will be some sound, so it is a "stealth-like" approach. JONATHAN: Kantori (provisional name) can be used to find many things in your current location. It is a very good guide for a certain area, but it does not take all the fun out of exploration. It is a good guide because you can learn a little more about where you want to go, but you are left with the surprise of discovering something. -- Is there a skill tree that makes Naoe more combat-oriented or enhances Yasuke's stealth? CHARLES: Both have skills that are more combat-oriented and stealth-oriented. Also, some equipment has effects such as increased resistance when attacked. We also offer perks that enhance your abilities in combat. Naoe, enhanced to be more combat-oriented, has an advantage in melee combat compared to Naoe, enhanced to be more stealth-oriented. Both have a range, but cannot go in completely opposite directions. There is some overlap between the two, but we have made sure that the characteristics of each ability are properly felt. --Please explain the skill system. JONATHAN: Both characters share XP and level up together, but the rest of the system is a bit similar to that of "Assassin's Creed Odyssey". XP and character abilities are available, weapons can be crafted to some degree, and various upgrades can be made as the game progresses. Weapons are not stand-alone, but for two, so each weapon has its own unique skill system. Players should not feel any discomfort, but this is a very different part of the game from the past. CHARLES: There are two things that were very important to us in terms of skills. First, we have to be very aware of archetypes. In Japan, there are distinct archetypes, such as the armor-clad samurai, the revolting monk, and the bandit, which are quite different. We try to make it clear to the player who is stronger, and we try to make that part of the leveling process as important as possible. Samurai are always stronger than bandits. Secondly, player skill is added to the mix. The better you are at timing, reading attacks, understanding weapons, etc., the better you will be and the further ahead you will be. --What is the volume of the map compared to past works? I would also like to know how you decided on the scale of this work. JONATHAN: The biggest difference is the scale ratio. The mountains are not the actual size, but we wanted them to be true forests, consisting of trees of a certain size, so that you feel you are in a forest. To achieve this, we needed space. We also decided to keep it close to a realistic scale, so we could feel the breath of many things. When we visited Japan and saw the castle, we were so glad we made this decision. Japanese castles are huge! Of course, we had seen pictures of castles before and thought they were big and magnificent, but when we saw them in person, they were astonishingly large. And I wanted more space to explore the castle. Castles were built to be large battlegrounds, you know. You need space to build intricate walls for defense. The overall scale of the map is similar to the size of the map in Origins. However, the scale ratio makes it feel more realistic. The open space leads to secluded areas throughout the game, which will be fun to explore. This sense of scale is a very interesting aspect of this game for us. CHARLES: The story led us to choose which locations in Japan we would choose. The major events in Kyoto, around Osaka, and around Azuchi Castle took place in the same area, so we were able to focus on that. JONATHAN: Of course, we had to choose a size that matched the game, but I think it was the perfect size for this story and type of game. --Since the game is set in the Warring States period, is there a system that allows players to participate in battles? JONATHAN: We see several battles in the story, and the battle at Iga is playable. There are other battles as well, but I can't talk about them right now. The game is set in the Warring States period, but it is not only about battles. It is a game that allows you to travel and discover that world. --What challenges have you faced and what have you been able to achieve as a result? JONATHAN: By making the big decision to go completely modern and demanding a very high level from the "Anvil" engine, we were able to increase the number of particles, create a more realistic atmosphere, and expand the graphical possibilities of the changing seasons. This allowed us to work on a fresh new Assassin's Creed. This was a great opportunity for us to take a big leap forward in graphics. CHARLES: Also, thanks to the new global illumination system, we were able to take advantage of light and shadow, which had a huge impact on the gameplay and stealth approach. For example, enemies became aware of our presence through our shadows, enemies gathered for warmth under a fire in the winter, or shadows through shoji screens depicted enemy presence, giving a new dimension to stealth. By having two main characters, it is possible to show a wider range of angles and different perspectives. (left) BROOKE DAVIES, Associate Narrative Director, (right) SACHI SCHMIDT-HORI, Narrative Consultant --Did you choose the Azuchi-Momoyama period as the period setting from the pre-production stage? BROOKE: I joined the project after the choice of period had been made, so the Azuchi-Momoyama period had already been chosen. This period offered so many wonderful opportunities from a narrative perspective. The complexity and duality of the period is well reflected in the characters of Naoe and Yasuke. --What were you aware of and what were the challenges in creating a scenario where the two main characters switch? BROOKE: From a storytelling perspective, I see it more as a wonderful opportunity than a challenge. When I write a story, I try to show rather than tell, and having two characters allows me to show what's going on from a wider range of angles and different perspectives. I hope this will encourage players to want to share their feelings with them. --What do you think are the most important points in bringing original characters and historical figures into the game? BROOKE: Both offer different and unique opportunities. With regard to Yasuke, I found him very interesting historically because we know some things about him, but there are many unknowns. So we needed to fill in the blanks in the story. It is important to note that Yasuke is a historical figure. And in the case of Naoe, an original character, we were able to draw the story freely to some extent. The fact that she is a member of the Fujibayashi family and that her father is Masayasu Fujibayashi Nagato Mamoru allowed us to place her firmly within the setting. Because Yasuke is a real person but appears as a foreign-born samurai, the Japanese-born Naoe is on equal footing with Yasuke, although she has a different perspective. --Will other historical figures appear besides Nobunaga Oda and Yasuke? BROOKE: You will meet Luis Frois (a Jesuit missionary) at the meeting in Azuchi Castle. Also, Nene and Oichi will appear. The Japanese art renaissance that began in the Azuchi-Momoyama period blossomed in the Edo period, and you will also meet Sen no Rikyu, Kano Eitoku, and other important figures. --Please tell us what year the story will be depicted. BROOKE: I can't tell you what players will see, but I think it covers a part of the Azuchi-Momoyama period, from 1579 to 1584. --I think the appeal of the series is to depict the struggle between the Assassin Order and the Templars while taking into account the history, but I would like to ask if there were any difficulties in putting the Azuchi-Momoyama period into it. BROOKE: I don't want to mention the Knights Templar because I don't want to spoil anything, but the fascination and dynamics of this period are very interesting and provided wonderful opportunities for storytelling. --How did you go about creating a world with a realistic feel of the Azuchi-Momoyama period? BROOKE: We were very lucky to work with the Environment Team. The visuals they created for the game provided a great backdrop for the story. The in-world experience added so much to the story. What we see from the stories and characters of this time period is complexity. I also believe that many of the people surrounding the World had their own struggles. It was a very difficult time historically, and we see duality. Nothing is ever clear-cut and black and white. In warfare, two groups face each other and are confronted with different perspectives. But in the midst of it all, there are glimpses of hope for the future as we know it, which will later blossom. --What advice did you actually give? HORI: One scene that left a strong impression on me was the scene where Nobunaga's sister, Oichi, remarries Katsuie Shibata. In the original story we received, it was thought that the two families decided on their own without regard to Oichi's intentions, and Katsuie was portrayed negatively because he was more than 20 years older than Oichi. So I spoke with BROOKE and the team and asked them to change it. Oichi had young children after the death of her husband Nagamasa Asai, so if her remarriage was to Katsuie, a trusted man who had served Nobunaga, she would have married him as a matter of course. When I explained that it was better to portray it in a positive light, it was a new discovery for the BROOKEs, and they were very moved by it. The rewritten version of the episode was very moving. The other scene is the tea ceremony scene featuring Sen no Rikyu. Chanoyu is widely known to be translated as tea ceremony, but experts say it is a mistranslation. After researching the misunderstanding over here, I advised them, as far as I could understand, not to use a teapot or tea leaves, for example. --Even we Japanese have a strong image of "ninja" as a fantasy. Did you encounter any difficulties with the theme of "ninja" in order to achieve a high level of fidelity to the historical reconstruction? HORI: Ninja are certainly a fantasy, so I think it's a good thing that we can express ourselves creatively and without reservation. However, there are also dedicated ninja fans and communities around the world, and I am not sure to what extent they see the ninja as a real existence, or as an entity that existed in history. Therefore, the extent to which ninja are represented in the game depends on the level of tolerance of the avid shinobi fans. I discussed this with the members of the development team. We did not have a specific policy on how much to express, but made decisions on a case-by-case basis. We would say, "This is an acceptable creative expression," or "This is stereotypical", so let's not do that. --I'm sure there are many references, but which one left a particularly strong impression on you? BROOKE: The first book I looked through was "Nobunaga no Kouki" by Ota Ushiichi ( Azuchi-Momoyama period, military commander and military history author). I was impressed by his personal observations as he recounts the details. We can learn a lot of historical facts from reading history books, but this author incorporated his own views so that I felt I could understand even his character and what it was like to live in that era, and I was completely drawn in. I was thrilled to be able to portray this time period and the people in this book. --The drama "Shogun" which is set in a similar time period, has been a hit, and I hope that this work will attract the same kind of attention from game fans. I understand that you have prepared a "Discovery Tour" that allows visitors to freely walk around the game world with historical explanations. BROOKE: I can't answer about the Discovery Tour today, but I am glad to see that interest in the setting and time period of the game is growing. I look forward to the day when we can bring this to you. Gathering a lot of information to recreate 16th century Japan and build a living world (left) THIERRY DANSEREAU, Art Director, (right) STÉPHANIE-ANNE RUATTA, Historical Supervisor and World Director --Please tell us what kind of materials you used as references to describe the field and the characters' costumes in the Azuchi-Momoyama period. THIERRY: I have been working with experts and consultants for a long time, but for the characters, I referred to museum exhibits and books for their appearances and costumes. I visited several museums, did my research, and checked the materials with STÉPHANIE-ANNE. Based on these, we created the characters. We also referred to descriptions in the books about the colors and the flags people carried. We used multiple sources, but we have checked them for historical accuracy. STÉPHANIE-ANNE: For several years we had the help of experts, but we also did research with a Japanese studio and team. We used different kinds of sources to make sure the team got it right and had all the information they needed to reconstruct what Japan looked like in the 16th century. We used museum databases, as THIERRY mentioned, but we also used inscriptions, scientific books, articles, and medieval depositions. For example, the Principles of Nobunaga has been translated into English, so we used that as a reference to describe 16th century Japan. I also referred to the documents of Luis Frois from the same period, which compare European and Japanese society. --This period was also a time when there was a large influx of immigrants. Will you also depict the episodes, lifestyles, and culture of these people (missionaries, merchants, etc.) as well as Yasuke? STÉPHANIE-ANNE: Yes, it is important to introduce the presence of Portuguese missionaries and merchants in the 16th century. They influenced the course of warfare during this period and the changing power of certain merchants in Japan. --I am wondering what castles, shrines and temples that symbolize the Azuchi-Momoyama period will appear in the game. Although the game is set in the Kansai region, is the Osaka Castle built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi ......? STÉPHANIE-ANNE: The era is represented by the construction of various castles and castle towns, so players will discover a wide variety of castle types and castles destroyed in battle. The Azuchi Castle, which is related to the name of the era, will also be featured. THIERRY: Himeji Castle, Osaka Castle, and Takeda Castle are also available, and it is wonderful that players can visit and play in these castles. I think this is one of the strengths of the franchise, but all of the castles are based on actual historical blueprints, which I think is very unique, both as an experience and a learning opportunity. The Koyasan Okunoin Cemetery is the oldest graveyard in Japan, which can also be seen in the game. There are too many to mention them all, but thanks to STÉPHANIE-ANNE and the experts, I think they are well described and it is wonderful that players will be able to travel to these places. --The architectural style and decoration of the buildings is a different culture from the previous works in the series. What were you conscious of in recreating the culture and what were the challenges? I am also interested in the possibility of diving on the "Shachihoko". STÉPHANIE-ANNE: The building team did a lot of research, and then we checked the results with experts and asked them to add the elements needed to build a great castle. We did research to recreate the decorations of not only the castle, but also the temples and shrines, and also to find out what materials were used to make them. THIERRY: The colors also change over time, so we made adjustments to that as well. Of course, this is "Assassin's Creed," so you can climb anywhere and jump from almost anywhere. Exploring is fun. --Japanese period games tend to be rather subdued, but were there any barriers to making it a worldwide production? STÉPHANIE-ANNE: It's a game based on history, and we want players to have the opportunity to play with history. This period is so fascinating and celebrated, and has had such an impact on pop culture, that we were fortunate to have the help of renowned experts to make sure we had all the information we needed to faithfully recreate medieval Japan in the 16th century. We maintained historical fidelity because it was a rich period with so much to talk about and we didn't feel the need to change it. There is an experience that goes into fantasy, but keeping it authentic was our primary goal. --In the main storyline, can we experience famous episodes from the Azuchi-Momoyama period (such as the Battle of Nagashino, the Honnoji Incident, the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute, etc.)? STÉPHANIE-ANNE: You will have to wait a little longer for that. --In the recent series, "Origins," "Odyssey," and "Valhalla," you can enjoy the connection to mythology and fantasy elements based on mythological themes. Will this work also contain elements based on Japanese mythology, yokai, and other fictional creatures? STÉPHANIE-ANNE: That is a very good question, but I will answer this one later. --This game also reproduces the four seasons of Japan. Which season did you start first? And which seasons were particularly difficult to express? THIERRY: I started with spring. We all know about cherry blossoms, and I think they are the most symbolic Japanese element for foreigners. And the big difference is winter. I wouldn't say that winter is more complicated because it has many different expressions, but it was very different from spring, summer, and fall, and the challenges were also different. --What was particular about the representation of water, such as waterfalls, rivers, lakes, etc.? THIERRY: All of the water topics were very important to us. We knew that there is a Shinto belief in waterfalls and rivers, and that they are important places in the Japanese eco-system. Even the blueprints of the suburbs are lined with irrigation canals, and they even go into the houses. Thus, we knew that water is a key component of Japanese culture, especially for agriculture. This is why we installed drains everywhere in this work. The presence of water in the Japanese landscape was different, so we took it seriously and treated it as an inviolable part of the Japanese landscape and way of life. --What are some of your favorite places, castles, or cultures that appear in your work? STÉPHANIE-ANNE: That's difficult. THIERRY: My favorite is Takeda Castle. It is on top of a high mountain and is called the castle in the sky, and I like this location. I can't say it's fair because we built it ourselves, but there are many other great places to visit. It was a lot of work to create the forest, but I really enjoy looking at the landscape. I also like how all the ecosystems interact with each other, such as the clouds in the weather system. It's not a location, but I enjoy it because it encompasses the whole game. STÉPHANIE-ANNE: I was impressed by the "Rakuchu Rakugaizu," Japanese folding screens from this period. I was fascinated by the fact that just by looking at them, one could come into contact with the vivid world of this period. The artistic touch is something special. I have never seen anything so full of art. I truly admire the artists of this era. THIERRY: I also think the most striking thing for me was the harmony of nature and architecture. I visited the site and found many places, and I could see how everything was deliberately composed. I was told that trees were planted while the chedi was being built at the time, but everything looked perfect. Also, the culture loves the age and values it, so they cherish moss and things that have taken root there. Japan has maintained these places so they still exist and are still in use. I realized that we are dealing with a subject that has a long history. It is also a culture that values space, living space. These were the most exciting discoveries during my travels in Japan. submitted by Shiirooo to assassinscreed [link] [comments] |

2024.05.19 00:19 lizzzgrrr My first Princess cruise = 😃
I’ve sailed on Celebrity (Alaska) and Royal Caribbean (2 Caribbean cruises) and am on the tail end of my first Princess cruise on Majestic (RT from Seattle to Alaska)
based on Reddit recommendations stayed at the Mediterranean Inn. Well located, well priced, super comfortable with a helpful staff and an option to catch a shuttle to the pier
got to the pier at 11a for a 3p departure. Process was smooth and took under 30 minutes even though I was Blue lane (had to pick up my medallion). Highly recommend getting there early to avoid long lines.
keep your swimsuit in your carryon. Seattle was a great day for the pool but our luggage took just long enough to arrive to keep us from enjoying the pool(s)
the staff is fantastic - if they are forced to smile and greet you, you can’t tell - they seem genuinely happy
there are so many activities throughout each and every day it’s impossible to get bored
manage your expectations about the Hollywood Conservatory- I don’t know how early people were waking to claim a cabana but pretty much once someone was in one they stayed there all day. This won’t be as big an issue with sailings later in the season when it’s warm enough to enjoy the outdoor decks/your balcony if you have one
food is good - some meals were amazing, some were blecch, most were good
if you don’t have reservations at Concerto you will be told to come back later. Allegro was always accommodating
the $10 sale had zero clothing items - I was expecting T shirts but it was beach totes, ball caps, costume jewelry, sunglasses and neckties
this was a well-oiled machine: everything was planned out and ran super smoothly
I would be delighted to sail this ship my next Alaskan cruise! I’m actually considering a back to back for a milestone birthday in a couple of years

2024.05.18 23:00 AutoModerator What is #VALZUBIRIAGENDA and some ideas and insights
The 3 basic parameters of hashtag #Valzubiriagenda:
- We artists and everyone else can write and self-publish art- and artist-related books: memoirs, biographies, art books and art catalogs. Books are forever. Pamphlets and brochures are not books.
- We announce a schedule of increasing prices of our art pieces, which includes quantities (scarcity numbers) per price point and overall (the total quantity of art pieces we might ever make). This helps art traders, art investors and art collectors speculate or even stop speculating and instead join a community of investors working together to hopefully skyrocket to the higher announced prices in a shorter span of time.
- We can use the NFT world, because NFTs provide the tracking (who owns what) and trading.
We can also not be involved with NFTs. Stores and individuals can help sell art using online presence and our catalogs in the stores. If this trends, or once this trends, even expensive art can be sold by neighboring businesses, without exclusivity. Commission systems do not have to be standardized. Art investors can produce their own catalogs to leave at the cafés. Even the cafés can produce their own catalogs.
Valzubiriagenda NFTs NFTs only came about a few years ago. But I had been working on this since the 1990s. I wrote a book,
Valzubiriagenda, along with fellow artist
Silverio Perez, and released it in 2018 (Amazon and elsewhere), tackling everything related to #1 & #2. We'll come up with #3 in a later book/ memoi marketing book.
Any artist, including tangible artists can release 10,000 NFTs if the artist chooses to do so. For tangible artists, the NFT first becomes an Art Commission Contract for sight unseen, yet-to-be made art. Once the art is made, the NFT becomes proof of ownership that the actual, tangible art is theirs.
Warehousing our tangible art Another related idea is that the tangible art may be warehoused by the artist so that the NFT traders continue to trade. This means that even 10-ton 10-foot tall sculptures can be owned and traded by anyone without worrying about shipping, reshipping, scratches, smudges, parts breaking off, etc. The newness of the pieces remain because they are stored by the artist, source, gallery, etc. The art piece gets shipped to the art collector, the ultimate owner.
An artist who makes ceramic coffee mugs - smaller art pieces, can release 10,000 NFTs with a schedule of increasing prices so that NFT traders can trade immediately. The 10,000 coffee mugs can get damaged, so as they are made, they continue to be stored by the artist, until the time when art collectors decide to have the art pieces shipped to them.
Why only now? I decided to write as many book-length memoirs as I can before I came out to promote this.
I'm an artist and an author. Both need time to "master." I would not even fully use "master" on myself, because there's always something new, even to my own art, my own writing and publishing.
I am now claiming that I'm the visual artist who has produced the most artist memoirs in the world. I have 5 on Amazon. I count Valzubiriagenda as both a marketing book and a memoir-of-sorts, because it has a lot of my own life lessons on writing and publishing. I would not care to contest my claim of having the most memoirs. I will release 5 more over the next 3 years.
BARTER! Get help to write, photograph art and publish your books! Anyone can hire 11 ghostwriters for 11 memoirs. If you can make art, but you cannot write, then barter your forever art with those who can help you produce forever books.
I don't feel the pressure of writing and publishing because I feel my focus should be on art students and art experts who would study my art and my books 100 years from now. Don't expect relatives and friends to read your books.
I call myself the Dollman For my NFTs, I am proposing to make dioramas - my original, costumed, bejeweled porcelain dolls in backdrops that will also have precious metals and gemstones. This way I can incorporate precious metals and gemstones in my work, to make sure that people perceive my art as expensive, just in case I myself don't become "famous" - there's no need to get world famous. We are artists and all we need to do is to satisfy the art niche.
Use your laptop now! I will encourage you to start writing your book-length memoir. Write, Edit and then Self-publish it. Get help. Why wait a hundred years for someone to write about you when all you need is a laptop and a nearby coffee shop.
Don't start counting chickens before the eggs hatch. I have encountered a lot of would-be writers who immediately see themselves as bestselling. world famous assets to society. Two even wanted me to sign NDAs (Nondisclosure agreements), because they did not want me to steal their book ideas.
Here's a suggestion. I would not personally do it. From one manuscript can come 2 books: The Original Draft (unedited, with misspellings, considered to be an art piece, scanned pages(?) of your handwritten original effort), and The Final Edition (edited).
PROVENANCE! Another way to enhance our investability, tradability and collectability is
PROVENANCE - how art ownership proceeds through time. The way this can be done is also through publishing books. Everyone can write their memoirs, biographies, art books and art catalogs, including traders, investors and art collectors. In effect, we artists can continue to be included or mentioned in even more books, without any additional effort by us.
You as an investor, reseller, trader, art collector should be able to publish a catalog with 250 works by 250 different artists, but they need to agree to this right from the start - it's your money, you should require them to follow your version of the hashtag
#valzubiriagenda parameters, which preferably should include permission for you to publish their art. Why would you track down 250 artists later?
No exclusive contracts If you're a café, you can call for artists, and come up with a book with for example, 30 artists, with a chapter devoted to each artist's profile and images of the artist's art.
You can distribute your catalogs to businesses and individuals near and far and online.
The book
Valzubiriagenda even cites that funeral homes and janitors closets can sell art, with or without exclusivity. Airline catalogs can include million dollar art pieces. Car manufacturers, showrooms and even car repair shops can sell art as well. Everyone should be able to do this, anywhere in the world, especially not just because of the pandemic, but right now, we are in really bad economies.
What's with the name #Valzubiriagenda I was into conspiracy theories in 2018, and this term,
"The Mandela Effect," was popular. I had read many times that an artist coined the term, but I had to research online, for her name, many times, before remembering it. I'm not good at remembering names. It took me a year and a half to finally tell you that
Fiona Broome coined "The Mandela Effect."
I also thought I might have to research trademarks and copyrights just to come up with a generic name. So I decided on
"Valzubiriagenda." I was not really sure at first, but I decided to use it as the title for my book (with co-authoartist
Silverio Perez) so that there would be no turning back and I can move on.
Am I a FUTURIST? Someone I recently met this May 2022 just called me a futurist.
In the 1990s, I proposed to a pension fund that they can raise billions of dollars, especially for emergencies, or as needed, or out of desperation, if the pension fund purchases a quantity of art from an artist who not only has a current, reasonable price, but an announced future price that the artist wants to reach.
That future price would obviously be higher than the current price. The art commission contract for multiple art pieces can be taken to the fund's financial lender for a loan. The higher future price can be used for financing purposes.
The pension fund's treasurer, a publicly elected official, said this idea might work, but we had to keep this a secret and discuss this some more, because other pension funds might copy and do this prematurely. This idea had to come from the two of us. The treasurer needed his votes and I needed credentials.
Added into the pot was my idea that I, as the artist, will also write one book-length artist memoir. This was and still is a strong factor, because the leadership and marketing books I had read then mentioned a strong tip. If you want to advance in your field, write a full-length book that is related to the field.
Unfortunately, the elected official, the treasurer of the pension fund, who was also a friend, passed away - he was old and had ailments. At that point in time, I cannot just approach another pension fund treasurer to share this idea with.
I realized I had to write a few memoirs. I needed to set an example for other artists, so I needed to write more than one memoir. Then I felt I should also make ready another book - the how-to of what I'm up to. I wrote
Valzubiriagenda, which was a memoir of sorts. I knew how long it would take me to write a book, so I had to make sure I can also consider this book a memoir.
In 2008, I imagined that someone like Bernie Madoff, or a fund like Lehman Brothers, would be desperate enough to use this to save themselves and their companies. I was not ready. I had only written 1 manuscript for a memoir.
In 2012, I released
Dollman the Musical, A Memoir of an Artist as a Dollmaker. Once again, I was not ready because writing it depressed me a little, and I knew I had to write more.
In 2014, I released 3 memoirs, and re-released
Dollman the Musical. Besides releasing regular books, I released special editions of the 4 books, which had a
"Special Secret Insert for Bankers," which explains my ideas of an announced schedule of exponentially increasing prices, to satisfy investors, and the publication of artist memoirs, to satisfy art collectors.
In 2014, I also issued out a press release. Google
"Can Billion Dollar Artist Save Investors and World Economy Valentino Zubiri PRWeb August 19 2014" and you will see the press release.
What I did was stake a claim on my ideas. I did not promote my books and the press release. I just wanted them to stay online, like a sleeping giant or a dormant volcano. I even designed 3 of the book covers to look like indie books from the 1980s. I was planting the seeds, thinking they will eventually grow and bear fruit in the future.
In 2015, I was interviewed by
Richard Syrett, about one of my memoirs,
Hocus Pocus Lately. This book is my memoir with paranormal stories. I could have pursued promoting my paranormal stories, but I wanted to be known first as a visual artist and memoirist, so I allowed myself one interview related to
Hocus Pocus Lately. Richard Syrett has(had?) his own syndicated radio show,
The Conspiracy Show with Richard Syrett, about the paranormal. He also guest hosts on
Coast to Coast AM, another internationally syndicated show about the paranormal.
In 2018, I released
Valzubiriagenda (co-authored by artist
Silverio Perez, a fellow artist). Finally, this book is "the how-to of what I'm to."
I'm going to end this with some strangeness. In 1986, a lady at a religious gathering went into a trance and left a good number of messages. Supposedly, anyone who got into a trance would have messages, but once the trance was over, the person would not remember what was said.
I was not part of the group, but the lady turned her head to face me. She "foretold" that whatever I would decide to do in the future, it will take time, but it will be the right thing. This is one of my stories in one of my memoirs,
Hocus Pocus Lately. The Tulipmania of 1634-37 I discovered that there was this incident of rare tulips becoming collectible during the Dutch Golden Age. There were tulips so rare and so well-desired that their prices equaled to that of a house. You can read more about this online (Wikipedia) or watch a few YouTube videos about it.
Here is the most useful idea that I gleaned from the Tulipmania. The tulip bulbs remained safe inside nurseries. The traders were carrying the deeds of ownership to the tulip bulbs.
Then NFTs came to the forefront I started learning PHP, an HTML scripting language, and MySQL, the database that PHP can connect to in the background, in 1999, when there were only 3 books about PHP and MySQL at the bookstores.
By 2014, I was trying to figure out how to make the "ledger," or database that can be used to update ownership and who can be contacted. If we are trading art, then the art ownership should be updated.
Then NFTs came about. This can be used as our ledger. Everyone can immediately trade NFTs of future, yet-to-be made art pieces, especially because it takes time to make tangible art.
NFTs actually went a step ahead, by allowing digital art to be traded.
The only setback with NFTs, in my opinion, is that it still lacks a commission system for resellers and representatives.
For example, if a café wants to represent me, then they can promote me at their café and on their online pages. If I make one piece of art that will be exclusively represented by a gallery, then that commission will be different and more specific. As ownership is transferred, the subsequent owners should be able to reset the commission. We should also have the option of giving commissions to hundreds of representatives at one time with different percentages if need be.
The recent crypto crash Lately, we have observed that NFTs and cryptocurrencies have been behaving like the stock market and other markets. They have been fluctuating.
I believe that it is time for a trend which discourages fluctuation of prices.
I have also seen YouTube videos where social influencers are encouraging us to be on the lookout for exponentially profitable ventures, because we have all seen this happen with the exponential increase of Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Let's see if #Valzubiriagenda trends We can announce present and future art prices. The galleries won't do this (yet?) because they follow a more traditional approach to the business of art.
We have a choice of using incrementally or exponentially increasing prices. We still reserve the right to change things in the future, so everyone should know to follow the latest update.
If this trends, if you as an artist simply announces that you will write an artist memoir, or that you will include the future works in future art books, you might have more art traders, investors and collectors approaching you.
Get your pen, paper and calculator Imagine yourself as an artist, where you are right now. Let's just say you still do not have a book about yourself and your art yet. Imagine now that you have a memoir out there. Don't you think it makes sense to charge more than what you are charging now? Writing and publishing books is just the beginning. I'm just standardizing this approach. The books also say to do other related projects. In my case, getting
Dollman the Musical onstage is one idea. You will have other related projects, but the publication of memoirs, biographies, art books and art catalogs will help all of us.
You can also imagine that a law firm that has meeting rooms, with someone who wants to form a local #valzubiriagenda group, can have meetings. A local café can do the same. Local photographers for your art, writers, editors, book designers, proofreaders and others can join in.
I suggest have printed books to share. 15 copies of your memoir or art books will be better than an e-reader or laptop or your phone to show. These gadgets can be stolen, sabotaged, broken, have coffee spilled on them, etc. 15 printed books means simultaneously showing to 15 people. You can even give them away to potential resellers, investors, traders and collectors.
When it rains, it pours, as in the days of Noah There's a saying, "When it rains, it pours." There is a negative interpretation and a positive interpretation.
Negative: When trouble comes, they cascade to even more.
Positive: When opportunity comes knocking, more follow suit. We can assume that if one gets our art because of #valzubiriagenda, more want to do it now, because of the rising prices, and FOMO - fear of missing out. What will they lose if they miss the boat?
As I have said earlier, if the #valzubiriagenda trends, if you announce a future memoir or art catalog, you might have an increase of investors, traders and art collectors who would want to check you out. You might encourage more sales. Just remember to write and publish that memoir and art catalog.
There's this saying, "As in the days of Noah." Imagine Noah, building his ark, with members of his own family, putting all his time and effort into it. Noah was a nice guy. I'm sure every once in a while a neighbor offered him coffee, or chai latte, or whatever refreshing drink they might have back then.
Here's the lesson to be learned. Just because they offered him some type of bubble tea drink, or coca cola, they still didn't make it to the ark. Rubbing shoulders with actors does not make you an actor. I have told my artist friends to write their memoirs. They told me that once they see me succeed, after all these many years of seeing my seemingly useless efforts, then they will write their memoirs and follow the road that I had paved for them.
Good luck to them, but if I were you, act now, get my art or make art. Support the 5-year old artist whose parent promised to release a comprehensive art catalog. If you get that 5-year old's art, and mine, I would be honored to be in the same art catalog that you will produce. I'm already successful at that point. You have gotten the mission just right.
I have already claimed to have written the most book-length artist memoirs in the world. Dethrone that claim. Barter. Use ghostwriters. Success to me means facing God one day and saying, I wrote my memoirs and left the world a legacy of books and art. I will not tell God, smiling and proudly, that I encouraged a run for my art by announcing a schedule of exponentially increasing prices that reached 9 figures. I'm sure God knows we had fun.

2024.05.18 19:19 drake_burroughs Is this the darkest Legion story ever told? We say goodbye to some old friends, hello to the new creative team, and look at Legionnaires 77 - 79 and Legion 121 & 122
| The times are dramatically changing and we say goodbye to the longtime creative teams that, believe it or not, crafted this version of the Legion for 6 years. To put this into perspective, Paul Levitz's second run lasted 7 and the 5YL Legion lasted 5. So they're one of the longest runs in Legion history. I wanted to make a point about the sales on this book to clarify an error I made before. Up to this point, this was the lowest-selling Legion book ever. The only saving moment they had was Final Night, where sales spiked up again because of the book's connection to DC's big crossover. But once that was over, they just went back down again, eventually cratering and heading for cancellation. But, post-threeboot, Legion sales were even worse. Every Legion book follows the same pattern - nice sales for the first issue and then an almost precipitous drop quickly after. However, and this is where I'm going to be a little mean, I think that this version of the Legion is the worst-selling Legion book when compared to the rest of the comic industry at the time. I think that Legion v7 selling 15,000 copies a few years ago is much worse than Legion v4 selling 17,000 in 1999. Let's talk about the high points of this run: - I'm going to call out Jeff Moy first. He lasted the entire run, brought a youthful energy and enthusiasm to the book that the other title was never able to match, and made the book his own. Yes, I could nitpick anatomy, perspective, and storytelling problems, but I can't argue with the simple fact that he drew the hardest superhero book for six years, hit all his deadlines, and created a good-looking book. His Legionnaires were fun, happy, and looked their ages. He's also a part of some of the best stories of the run and his contributions were unparalleled. I don't know if he gets put onto the Legion artist pantheon but he definitely deserves consideration.
- I know it seems obvious to say that Mark Waid was the best writer this run saw, but I don't know if that's something you can argue against. I think they really missed his talents when he left and the book would've been much better if he stayed.
- Roger Stern and Carmela Merlo brought a competency and professionalism to the writing team when they joined and brought back a lot of the youthful energy the book needed.
- KC Carlson oversaw one of the worst times in Legion history (the end of 5YL) and somehow made a reboot work that didn't completely offend longtime readers. It's a tough job to oversee two interconnected books (also something that was never attempted before or since) and made it work.
- We got some classic Legion tales: the Mordru battle, Violet and the Emerald Eye, the creation of the Fatal Five, the Daxamite attack on Earth
- We got the definitive takes on a few characters: Triad, Invisible Kid, Shrinking Violet... and some great updates on a few: Brainiac 5, Star Boy, Bouncing Boy, Matter-Eater Lad... and some of the best new Legionnaires: Gates, XS, Kinetix, Kid Quantum, and Monstress.
And the low points: - For every Moy book that looked good, we got some really bad artwork from Lee Moder and Scott Kolins.
- I still will never figure out why Tom McCraw kept his plotting job after the bad ending to 5YL and he had just as many misses with this run. I know he's constantly talked about as a Legion historian, but there needs to be more to your job, right?
- I've seen a lot of posts defending Tom Peyer, but I just never saw it. He'd get one good issue out of 12 and, for the most part, dropped the ball more often than he scored. There were too many times when it just felt like he was phoning it in.
- Some absolute clunkers of stories: almost everything after the Mordru saga, the reintroduction of Invisible Kid II, almost everything involving McCauley, almost everything involving Apparition and her past...
- Some horrible new versions of the characters: Apparition, Ultra Boy, Element Lad, Saturn Girl as mind-controller... some shaky new versions: Live Wire, Cosmic Boy, M'onel, Umbra... and the worst new character in the Legion: Koko.
All in all, it's a run that has high highs and painfully low lows. I will still argue that this run needs to be included in any reboot/relaunch of the Legion and ignoring some of these characters and changes would be to the detriment of the series. But I also don't think it comes close to the second Levitz run or the first couple of years of 5YL. Let's continue the reread: Legionnaires #77 The entire Legion heads to the beach for sun, sand, romance, and to catch a thief... kinda... These are the kinds of issues that this creative team has shown they do well so I'm expecting it to be fun. I've said before that I love it when the Legion is hanging out and just being friends. Let's focus on the important parts of the story: - Almost the entire team heads to Summer World, a planet that is basically all beach, so they can relax, spend some quality time together, and bond.
- While there, Element Lad wants to figure out who's been stealing stuff the past few issues (such as the crystals a while ago), so he's got Sensor, Monstress, and Kinetix to help. They go undercover (yes, the gigantic woman and the talking snake) to try to figure out which really rich person was behind all the crimes.
- In a fun twist, the criminal ends up confessing and turning himself in as he realizes that the Legionnaires are after him and he can't take the strain and pressure. Yes, it's silly, but it works in this issue.
- Lori Morning arrives as well, alongside Amilia Crugg, and we get a nice fashion moment with Monstress.
- To show you just how seriously the Legion is taking Jan's quest for the thief, Monstress deserts him to join Lori and XS to go on some rides. Like I said before, this issue is just about fun and anything remotely heroic is put to the very far back burner.
- On the romantic front, Chuck and the Luornu's spend some time together and it's revealed that at least two of the three personalities like him. We also get more Dyrk/XS moments, which I'm glad to see, and the introduction of a Monstress/Jan romance... now I'm sad that we won't get much more of this before the change in direction.
- I also have to give credit for how they handled Kinetix here - she finally gets her personality back and was key to a lot of things going on in this issue.
Maybe it's because I just had a nice, hot vacation, but I really enjoyed this one and loved that it showed the personalities of the Legionnaires again. Although, to be honest, I would've loved to have had just a couple of panels of Gates complaining about the opulence, the sand, and the heat... It's also the final issue for the writing team and I think Tom McCraw, Roger Stern, and Carmela Merlo really leaned into what they did the best. It's a nice way to wrap up their run. LSH #121 In a complete change of tone, we're back with the Fatal Five (four?) story. Let's go random stream of consciousness while I read... We start with a desolate planet called Tenazor and a huge ship crash lands into the surface. Is this the Fatal Five? Someone else? Oh, and I have to say I love the Walt Simonson sound effects they use here - not sure if they paid him for the style and look but they should. Half the team is flying back to the Outpost (although at this point I'm honestly not sure who's assigned where, but that might just be my bad memory... or I'm wondering why the lightning twins aren't here) when their beach memories are interrupted by Brainiac 5, who's nice enough to recap last issue. He tells them they warped the whole Outpost through a stargate and they crashed on the planet from the first page... even though the ship that crashed didn't look big enough to be the Outpost. Umbra and M'onel have already arrived at Tenazor and, since it's under an orange sun, the Daxamite is only at half strength. Which is perfect when going against the Fatal Five. The villains have already started turning the locals into slave labor, because they have to make the villains even more villainous, right? M'onel tries to fight everyone by himself, uses absolutely no strategy aside from attack, and gets blasted by the Emerald Eye. I will repeat what I said last issue - does any Legionnaire actually think before they rush into battle? He and Umbra are quickly defeated before the rest of the Legion arrives, including Gates and Brainy. We get a nice moment between Kinetix and Violet, as the latter worries about facing the Eye again and Kinetix reassures her that she's afraid because she hated the evil that she did. They hug and I, once again, wish they did more with Zoe. Brainy comes up with the incredible plan of while the Legion is fighting the Fatal Five, he'll sneak in and regain control of the Outpost. Yep, that's it. No need to consider strategy, or the best members for attacking the different foes, or how Ferro is going to accomplish anything... Subplot: Dreamer has, of course, a bad dream about something ending too soon for the Legion. We all know it's this series (only 4 issues to go), but wouldn't it be great to do a subplot with Dreamer where she wakes up, surprised by a good dream? The battle starts and Karate Kid takes down the Empress (who I guess isn't tied to the Eye at all) with one move. Wow - they could've actually written a compelling fight scene and let the two of them go but, instead, just let Val defeat this killer with one move. Kind of a waste, if you ask me. As the fight continues, and the Legion actually uses teamwork to go against the Persuader, we get a very strange scene with Gates single-handedly teleporting the Eye away. He also gets to throw in some nice socialist dogma while he's doing it, just in case there was anyone who wasn't sure what his political beliefs are. Just kinda overkill right now... Element Lad and Kinetix try to change the Emerald Eye into something less threatening, Sensor makes Validus think his lightning is going against him so that Violet and Ferro can knock him unconscious. (That's something I never thought I'd see in a Legion comic). And then Koko takes off to save a green monkey. Yes, you read that correct. We're interrupting the action to focus on Koko saving another monkey. Brainy distracts Tharok, allowing Dyrk to cut the power to the Outpost and end the threat. He blasts the villain with a force field (just going to say now that I really liked that they added this to his arsenal - using the force field as an aggressive weapon was a great add to the character). Element Lad creates a magnesium flare and blinds the Emerald Eye. Another thing I didn't think I'd see in a Legion comic. We wrap everything up very quickly, as the villains are captured, M'onel flies the Outpost back into space, and Brainy leaves Koko on the planet so the white monkey can bond with the green monkeys. The Legion wonders what harm Koko can do, but we see that he's already leading the monkeys with a Legion wristband on him. That's not going to go well, is it? I actually kinda liked this one, if only for the massive amount of teamwork used. They probably didn't need to reform the Fatal Five for this, and they defeated them really, really easily, but the Legion worked as a team, so that was okay for me. Or maybe I'm just in a better mood today... The more I think about it, the more I feel like the creative team used the Fatal Five for no other reason than they knew this was their last chance. It's their final issue and I think they wanted to go out with a bang, using the best villains in the Legion arsenal. I now kinda wish they had scrapped a lot of the previous issues and done something a little more epic. But that's been a constant complaint for the McCraw/Peyer team - they just never knew how to actually lay out a storyline. Legionnaires #78 Here we have it - the first regular Legion title written by Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning (Or DnA). Oh, and a barely remembered artist named Olivier Coipel shows up for the final two pages as well. Let's see how they handle these characters... One of my favorite things to notice during rereads is how well the new creative teams introduce new concepts and ideas and how well they keep characterizations consistent. In some cases, the teams slow build, adding things here and there and try their best not to completely recreate the book. In other cases, they immediately start throwing their new ideas in. Rereading this book, there are a couple of elements that are almost immediately evident: - A more scientific slant to the book. Rather than have the book feel like a regular comic book, DnA immediately throw in basic sci-fi concepts such as Asimov's Law of Robotics (almost too much of that, but I'm still happy they're doing it). Brainiac 5 comes up with a solution to their problems by reprogramming their opponents. The book finally feels like something that is happening in the future. (On a complete aside, why would Brainy use anything by Asimov? Wouldn't Colu have come up with their own rules for robots because they created robots first? Or because they are superior, intellectually, to Earth?)
- Continuing with that, the introduction of Robotica. Unless I completely forgot some older Legion story, this is the first time we're hearing of a robots-only world... okay, I can think of a couple from the very old days of the Legion but I'm not sure that's what they're referencing. I doubt any reader knew where this was going in this first issue by the writers.
A change in a few relationships: - Jo and Tinya immediately change, as they show her want to work away from her husband and do something without him. In one page, they establish that they're not just an annoyingly-attached couple that can't exist without the other. It's also the first time Tinya felt a little like Phantom Girl.
- Live Wire brings up the idea of marriage to Saturn Girl and she's receptive. Wow - that's fast. But, again, they immediately throw out the "Garth can't handle the separation and acts like a petulant child" storyline and have him acting like a more mature character.
- XS and Monstress joking together about their teammates, showing that they're more connected than we thought.
- Brainy no longer being a complete ass, but just kinda snarky and curt. It's a subtle change, but shows some growth.
One smart think DnA did here was just use 4 main characters for the story: Cosmic Boy, Apparition, Brainiac 5, and Monstress. Instead of being overwhelmed by the gigantic team, they went small (something they'll continue for over a year) and focus on just a few of the characters. And finally, the last two pages start the destruction, as stargates are destroyed and whole systems are wiped out. Death and destruction are coming and heading towards Earth... LSH #122 Legion of the Damned, Part One After reading this book, I spent some time trying to think of comic series that underwent dramatic, intense changes in both style and level of quality. I mentioned this before, but I always find it interesting when series get new creative teams and go in dramatically different directions. I like to see what big and small changes they make. For this series, the change is incredibly dramatic. The only comparable book I can think of is when Grant Morrison and Richard Case took over Doom Patrol. It went from a fairly standard, somewhat uninteresting superhero book to a trip through Morrison's crazed vision of a broken bunch of heroes. The book was immediately 10000 times better and eventually joined the Vertigo universe to allow Morrison to push the envelope even further. I can't imagine what it must have been like at the end of 1999, after spending years reading the Archie Legion, to suddenly have everything shift to such a degree. DnA have taken everyone's fears of Y2K and turned them into the Blight, an evil alien consciousness that has taken over the Earth, destroyed everything (including Interlac, which is no longer on display), and taken possession of the Legionnaires, turning them into slaves. At the heart the of Metropolis is The Stem, the huge organism from which the Blight conjure energy ribbons for transportation. It's also believed to be part of the network that brought the Blight to Earth. There are almost no beings left on Earth, just the Blight. The scared few who are free are trying to escape by getting resistance leader R.J. Brande to use the last remaining stargate to help them get off planet. And leading them are Live Wire, XS, Chameleon, and Shvaughn Erin. But they face the possessed versions of Umbra, Ultra Boy, and Karate Kid and, except for Cham, fall under the Blight's control. Cham's lost, desperate, trying to find help, when the four Legionnaires from last issue (Cosmic Boy, Apparition, Monstress, and Brainiac 5) finally return to Earth with no clue of what's happened. Wow, we just got really, really, really dark. Legionnaires #79 Legion of the Damned, Part Two DnA and Olivier Coipel continue this story, so I'm going to assume that this whole series was done months earlier to ensure they could hit this bi-weekly schedule. In that case, the previous creative teams had to know that their run was over far sooner than I guessed before. We start this issue with Cham explaining to the four what happened and just how quickly the Blight took over the Earth and their former teammates. His big reveal, of course, is that everyone was taken to The Stem. To further stress the darkness of the story, we see inside The Stem and see XS's fate. She's been taken prisoner and is now being processed for power sapping. She's trapped inside a cocoon, breathing some strange liquid, but because of her powers, she cannot be kept unconscious. So she's aware of the horror around her. She's heading towards the end and knows she's about to lose everything. Then we get a flashback to when the four finally reached the Legion Outpost. Tinya is being her usual annoying self, whining about not getting to see Jo. Monstress is trying to keep positive but Brainy is tired of her tantrums. It's moments like these when you remember that Tinya's around 16 years old... and married... and emotionally immature. Last issue's change is already tossed to show that she sometimes is going to act like a little kid. As the four board the Outpost, they immediately realize that it's empty, hasn't been used in a while, and something very bad is happening. The Blight recognize they're onboard and blow up the Outpost just as they get away. But the blast destroys their ship and they crash on Earth. I guess the Blight brought the Outpost to Earth at some point, right? Tinya wakes up from that nightmare (strange that she's super annoying in her own dream) and chats with Cham about how they need to get into The Stem to try to figure out what's actually going on. Within The Stem, XS is being taken further into the chamber when she starts communicating with a telepath. She's waking up, her speed powers allowing her to get over the sedative. She sees the remaining Legionnaires hanging from the ceiling, like food, and then decides it's time to escape. She also recognizes the telepath - it's Saturn Girl. She bursts from her cocoon, grabs Saturn Girl, and starts running. Outside The Stem, the five head towards the huge organism, looking for a way to get inside. Brainy spots a opening and explains the science behind how they can get in. I'm just going to point out right now that I really like the way DnA are handling Brainy. He's actually acting super intelligent, and above the rest of the team, and irritating in a stubborn, smug way instead of just being an ass. Inside The Stem, Jenni's too tired to continue and Imra tells her to leave her behind. Then Imra shares what she's seen, what she's learned inside The Stem and XS is stunned. To make matters worse, the Blight have sent all the possessed Legionnaires to destroy those who are free. We'll finish off the Blight next week! Our next Legionnaire in the spotlight... Element Lad!!! https://preview.redd.it/e25sib3pw71d1.jpg?width=928&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c18ee2aa7bc0548880da04f1912d11e2ca6d9e8c https://preview.redd.it/zbqmsccqw71d1.jpg?width=620&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=78bc20f3d7e865d8b3ee6b7f5b816e2c1f4043e7 https://preview.redd.it/z00u242cx71d1.jpg?width=1425&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c190f454ede73091c76e94d021ef01de01afbef8 To me, Jan Arrah is the soul of the Legion and the one who made the Legion a family instead of just a team. Having suffered from quite possibly the most horrific origin story of any super-hero ever created, he became the backbone of the team and one of the best leaders ever. Perhaps he, more than almost any other character except for Dream Girl, benefited from being the team leader during the Levitz run and that's what's coloring my judgment here. But I don't think so. I think the strength of the character has been there from very early on and Levitz and Giffen leaned into it, turning him into a must-have Legionnaire. Sadly, post-5YL, he has never been used to his potential and most of the creative teams don't seem to understand his importance. - Let's go back to the beginning - his entire planet was wiped out by Roxxas, leaving him as the only survivor of the planet Trom. As a child reading these books, I don't think I ever quite understood the magnitude of the suffering or the crime. As an adult, it's stunning that he can even get out of bed in the morning.
- Looking back through the issues, has Jan always had the best (or worst) hair of any Legionnaire? From the feathered look in the 70's to the awesome perm in the 80's, he's always been styling an epic do.
- I actually quite liked the way they turned Jan bisexual in the 90's and made it something completely normal and natural. It was epically progressive writing for the time and surprising from one of the big two comic companies. Looking back on it now, however, I do wish that their whole motivation for changing his sexual preference had been for a better reason than "he wears a pink costume."
- Speaking of costumes, I've always liked the Element Lad costume - especially when he had the Interlac letter E on his chest. It just felt more futuristic, if that makes sense.
- What I didn't like about that change was how they handled the Shvaughn Erin side of the story. The Jan/Shvaughn romance had been one of the strongest parts of the series, romantically, and a mature relationship that readers were happy to see. I honestly think they were in the same category as Jo/Tinya or Mon-El/Tasmia. But to reveal that Shvaughn was essentially a stalker who changed their gender to get close to Jan really debased it.
- I always love the issues where Jan lets loose and actually shows just how powerful he is. I mean, think about it - he could kill Superman in a heartbeat. He could've killed Darkseid and ended the Great Darkness Saga in one move. Luckily, his moral code is one of the strongest, but he could easily defeat any other Legionnaire. I think of that early 70's issue where he's about to kill Roxxas but can't - he just can't go against his own morality.
- I was far less of a fan of Jan in PZH as they just turned him into a stoned airhead who stumbled around, never really did anything of any importance, and seemed completely clueless about any social interaction. When he suddenly turned into a mineral, that made things worse. Sadly, they were only starting to use him in a slightly interesting way at the end of the series.
- And I really struggled when he turned heel at the end of Legion Lost. I get the reasoning but he just wasn't the character to do it to. It was so out of left field that it felt like something being done for shock value instead of story value.
Thoughts? What are your memories of Element Lad? Next week we get to the end of the longest Legion title to ever exist and see what happens to the characters after that. See you next week! submitted by drake_burroughs to LegionofSuperheroes [link] [comments] |
2024.05.18 11:48 admelioremvitam The Man, the Myth, the Legend: Chow Yun Fat
| Happy Birthday to Chow Yun Fat! May 18th is Chow Yun Fat’s birthday. I wanted to share a few gifs and photos here to celebrate his birthday. For anyone who might be interested, here are some random bits of history and facts about Chow Yun Fat gleaned from the interwebs. (Sources and interviews are listed at the bottom.) Chow Yun Fat was born in Lamma Island, Hong Kong in 1955. Lamma Island is the third largest island of Hong Kong and is located southwest of Hong Kong Island. It is considered a rural area even today. His father worked on a Shell Company oil tanker while his mother was a cleaning lady and vegetable farmer. 1 Chow Yun Fat was called Siu Gau (puppy/little dog) up to the age of 7. He didn't know his own name until he attended school and the teacher did roll call. It was local practice to call young children by nicknames for fear that they would not survive the early years of childhood. He grew up in a home with no electricity and no flushing toilet (this type of toilet is known as 夜香 yèxiāng in Chinese). They relied on oil lamps at night. As a child, he woke up at dawn and helped his mom sell herbal jelly and Hakka tea pudding in the morning. In the afternoons, he worked in the fields. 1 His family moved to Kowloon when he was 10. At 17, due to his father's deteriorating health, he dropped out of school to support the family and worked odd jobs, e.g. bell boy, postman, camera shop sales clerk, etc. His first monthly salary was HKD200 (~USD36 in 1972). In 1973, he saw a newspaper advertisement for an actor-trainee position and went for an audition. During that time, the education required was secondary school completion so he was eligible. He almost did not make the cut during the audition but one of the judges (Chung King Fai) supported him. Chow Yun Fat said he couldn't sing or dance very well. Thus, the other judges didn't think too much of him. After one year of training, he signed a long-term contract with TVB which lasted from 1974 to 1986. One of his most notable TVB dramas was The Bund 上海灘 with Ray Liu and Angie Chiu. It is praised as “The Godfather of the East” 2 and spawned sequels, remakes and a film adaptation. The theme song by Frances Yip became a memorable Cantopop hit. Besides TV dramas, Chow Yun Fat also made box office successful movies in the 1970s with Goldig Films which achieved high gross revenues of over HK$1 million. However, his ventures into low-budget films (after the Goldig films) later in the early 1980s were box office disasters. 1 The tides finally turned in 1986 when Chow Yun Fat made A Better Tomorrow with director John Woo. This movie won him his first Best Actor award at the 1987 Hong Kong Film Awards. It was the highest grossing film in Hong Kong cinema history at that time. Thereafter, he stopped making TV dramas and went into films. Just a little anecdote about his first award: Prior to winning the Best Actor award for A Better Tomorrow, he had attended three previous Hong Kong Film Awards where he dressed his best thinking he would win but didn't. For his 4th nomination, he was in the middle of filming and asked his director for time off to go to the award show but he was denied due to the hectic filming schedule. About 2 hours before the show, he received a call that said he was going to win that night. He rushed from Macau to Hong Kong by ferry and car in casual clothing and arrived just in time for his name to be called. Many years later, a host asked him why he didn't have an assistant, manager, etc. deliver a suit for him to change on his way there. Chow replied and said there was no such thing as assistants or managers during those days. Actors were in charge of their own wardrobe. 3 There wasn't even a person to give you some tea. The first person to do that for him was his wife, Jasmine, 4 whom he quietly married in 1986 in a civil ceremony. They later held a wedding ceremony in 1987. After A Better Tomorrow, Chow Yun Fat went on to make “many more 'gun fu' or 'heroic bloodshed' films, such as A Better Tomorrow II (1987), Prison on Fire (1987), Prison on Fire II (1991), The Killer (1989), A Better Tomorrow 3 (1990), Hard Boiled (1992) and City on Fire (1987), an inspiration for Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs.” 1 While Chow Yun Fat was becoming well known for his honorable tough guy roles, he also starred in comedies and romantic blockbusters. In 1989, he brought together all three types of characters for his role as Ko Chun in God of Gamblers with director Wong Jing. The movie broke the Hong Kong box office records and inspired a series of gambling films and a number of comedic sequels. After making films in Hong Kong for about 10 years, Chow Yun Fat moved into Hollywood films in the mid 1990s. His most notable film during that time was Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon which did very well at the international box office and the Oscars. “ Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon won over 40 awards and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards in 2001, including Best Picture, and won Best Foreign Language Film, Best Art Direction, Best Original Score, and Best Cinematography, receiving the most nominations ever for a non-English-language film at the time,” 5 In 2006, he and Gong Li made Curse of the Golden Flower, a film directed by Zhang Yimou. “In 2007 it received fourteen nominations at the 26th Hong Kong Film Awards and won Best Actress for Gong Li, Best Art Direction, Best Costume and Make Up Design and Best Original Film Song for "菊花台" (Chrysanthemum Terrace) by Jay Chou.” 6 In 2014, Chow made From Vegas to Macau with director Wong Jing and reprised his role as Ko Chun, God of Gamblers. In 2015 and 2016, he made two more sequels with the last one being the final installment of the God of Gamblers series. A few personal fun facts: Chow Yun Fat is affectionately called by the locals as 發哥 Faat Gor (Brother Fat). His wife, Jasmine, is called 發嫂 Faat Sou (Sister-in-law Fat). Compared to other celebrities, he dresses and lives very modestly. His monthly expense/pocket money is reportedly HKD800 (~USD103). He likes to go to the local produce markets to shop for groceries with his wife. He enjoys eating at small food stalls and he takes public transportation in Hong Kong (in other countries as well). He's often seen on Hong Kong’s MTR. He's also well known for taking selfies with fans and friends. A host called him the “God of Selfies” 自拍神. 😂 Whenever a fan approaches him for a photo (e.g. on the train or when he's out on a run), he is always happy to accept their request and offer to take a selfie/wefie with their phone. His reasoning is two-fold: 1, if fans can spend years watching his films, he can take a few seconds to take a photo with them. 2, he (~183 cm / 6’) is usually taller than they are and it's a better angle for him if he takes the photo. 😂 He developed an interest in fitness after working with Aaron Kwok on the 2014 movie, Monkey King: Havoc in the Heaven’s Palace. For his role in From Vegas to Macau, he shed 13 kg (from ~80 kg) in 10 months. He ran 10 km daily for 1.5 hours during this time. In 2023, he ran a half-marathon in less than 2.5 hours.
