2024.04.29 14:19 antoniamek HOW does Dina know Sofia Vergara but not Michael Jackson?

In the salsa episode Dina says to Amy "People won't buy salsa unless they think it's authentic. Put a little Vergara in it!" I'm 100% sure she is referring to Colombian actress Sofia Vergara who is known for her heavy Spanish accent.
But in another episode (not sure which one, if you know pls tell me) Dina and Amy are in the car and Dina offers to sing since her car doesn't have a radio. Amy asks her to sing something from Michael Jackson and Dina replies "you can't just name someone you went to middle school with! It has to be popular." implying she has never heard of Michael Jackson.
Which sure - if you have no contact with pop culture whatsoever you might not know who Michael Jackson is. But you would defenitely not know Sofia Vergara either.
Any explanations? Feel free to get creative haha!

2024.04.23 02:03 certifiedbpdqueen When did this sub turn against Phil?

Bruh since when did this sub just turn against Phil? I swear, like a couple months ago everyone was talking about how much they love Phil and what a good character he was, and all of a sudden I’ve seen like five posts within the last week where Phil is getting shit talked because he “flirts with other women in front of Claire.” For one, he doesn’t do that because he wants to cheat on Claire, because I don’t think Phill would ever actually cheat on Claire, it’s pretty obvious he deeply loves her. His “flirting” is written in for comedic value. Phil is a fantastic father, and he’s never ever made a move on any women, even if he does occasionally make comments that could be seen as flirty about other women’s looks. Phil calls Claire gorgeous and beautiful and he does things for her and compliments her all the time, despite a lot of his flaws. He’s an amazing father that clearly loves and supports all his kids. Give my man Phil a break. Also, I notice a lot of people mention Phil being flirtatious in his scenes with Gloria, but no one ever mentions the times where Gloria openly flirted with other men in front of Jay to get what she wanted. Even though Jay wasn’t usually bothered by it and even often encouraged it if it could benefit the both of them, it’s still no different than what Phil does, but no one ever talks about that. Let’s be fr, if someone as hot as Gloria constantly dressed like the way she dresses and paraded in front of you, you all would flirt with her too 😭 This sub criticizes Phil for flirting with Gloria, but please, don’t act like you all wouldn’t turn into Phil if Sofia Vergara walked up to you dressed like Gloria right now 💀

2024.04.17 08:31 icespiceismymother RE: Rachel Zegler & not being "Latina" (Rant)

Hi everyone, I recently saw a post under the Latine Voices Only flair, and this is no disrespect to OP, I admire them for opening up a fascinating topic. I invite everyone of all cultures and backgrounds to voice your opinion on identity, and claiming/ connection to that respective identity, (how does connection to your culture work?), however this will be specific to Latinamerican identity, history, and culture. Also warning this is a long post because this is a complicated topic lol.
In OP's post, Rachel Zegler's claiming to be latina was discussed. As a latinamerican, in a predominantly US based website, I want to provide my input, and I am open to all ears, I think this is an important conversation to have in our community and diaspora. I want to preface this by saying that I am not here to police anyone's identity, your identity is yours, but I am here to call into question Rachel's intention and use of her connection to my country.
I am Colombian, born and raised in Barranquilla (the exact city her grandmother is from, and this is my perspective on the situation. I already posted a long explanation of how latin identity is viewed in latam on popculturechat, which was well received. I recommend reading this before commenting.
I wanted to reply to a lot of the comments and misinformation I saw on that post, first: being Latino is not connected to "blood" or "heritage", this is a common misconception I see go around. OP mentioned Rachel looking “mestiza”, and this is the exact issue i want to address. In the US this is the stereotypical look that is associated with latinidad, but in reality “looking mestizo” means nothing when it comes to being latino. Being Latino is a regional pan-ethnic term. I bring up examples such as Anya Taylor Joy, Alfred Enoch or Eric Fukusaki, who in the US would not be considered latino because they don't fit that stereotypical look, when in reality they are actually claimed by their respective countries, and are culturally integrated (speak the language, have a lived reality of the culture), while many US representative for latinidad quite literally do not. Being latino is simply a connection to the culture, many people don't realize that in latam we are incredibly diverse, and have latinos of jewish, arab, japanese, korean, indigenous, italian, german, etc. origin. Second: “gringo” is not a slur, nor do latinamericans use it as a slur towards americans. Hell, brazilians use it for anyone who isn’t brazilian, i am a gringa to them. Gringo is used in a wide variety of ways, from being rude, to a term of endearment, to neutral, to mocking. But it is not a slur. Insinuating that latinamericans on twitter were trying to use it as a slur is ignorant, we use it a lot on Americans because often they think they’re the center of the world.
As for Rachel Zegler, I'm going to be honest, her use of Colombian culture (when her only connection is a grandmother) in order to get a role meant for a puerto rican girl, was the wrong move. Her (and Ariana Debose's accent in WSS was a horrible decision by Spielberg and the producers. Her Spanish had American intonations, and this is my issue with the situation, using anyone who has the tiniest connection to Latam as Latino representatives in Hollywood. I would've left it at there, but Rachel's ignorance on the culture (and country) she claims a connection to sours the situation for me. Her recent comments on a "latina hair gene" was by far one of the dumbest, americanized view of latinamericans, and this isn't her first time. As we all know by now, latinas come in EVERY shade, color, hair texture, background, etc. it is SIMPLY a term to refer to people from latinamerica. Hair comes from 1a to 4c, from Gisele Bunchden to Shakira to Yalitza Aparicio, to Angely Gaviria, and THATS what makes our region so beautiful and unique, our diversity. For Rachel to continue to make these weird generalized comments show peak Americanism, no Rachel, we don't all want to look like Shakira or Selena, we don't have a "latina hair gene", and to Ariana Debose: YES, connection to language and food DOES matter, and for these girls who are born and raised to AMERICAN parents, to use their one distant connection to dictate what does and doesn't matter, what is and what isn't, is absolutely disrespectful.
That's not to say there isn't space for Colombian-Americans, or latino-americans, I am currently living in the US to study, and I greatly appreciate our diaspora community, you guys are literally our cousins, but the difference is the genuine CONNECTION, there is a complicated discussion of whether you need to speak spanish/portuguese/french (because Haiti is absolutely Latino), and in LATAM i think its obvious you do, and I understand in the US its more nuanced, so I don't have an exact view on that, but it would be ridiculous to ignore that the main part of latinamerica is the language you speak and communicate in, as that is how you consume the media, discourse, etc. But again, the US has its own distinctive latino cultures (Chicanos for example)
So to end my post, what breaks my heart is Hollywood's choice of who gets to be latino, because often it's just people who look stereotypically latino. Who gets to be at the forefront and represent. Is it colombian-americans like Moisés and Mateo Arias? Who have made a film on the Colombian-American experience? Who have a genuine connection to their culture? No. It's it an exploitative and stereotypical representation like Sofia Vergara, who has complained about not being able to secure roles because of her accent. It's poorly represented stories with actors who don't have a lived experience of being latino, speaking the language, or even visited the countries they claim.
This isn't to hate on Rachel Zegler, I think she's an incredible actress and singer, and the misogynistic hate train against her was cruel, so I do have a soft spot for her and wish her the best in the industry who abuse and destroy young women like her. I think Jenna Ortega has a much more humble and understandable view when she talked about her connection to the culture, and she didn't make herself seem bigger or a representative in an interview i read, i'm going try and find it and link it soon.
But as a latinamerican, our perspective also matters, and frankly her use of the Colombian identity, what it means to be Colombian, and latinamerican in a sense, is her watered down view of it, which I don't blame entirely on her as immigrant generations pass, so does the connection to the original culture. To latino-americans who i see many on this sub, I don't want this post to make you feel less or more latino, but I want to provide the latinamerican perspective which has been dismissed, ridiculed, and ignored on US-centric sites, your identity is personal to you, and that should be respected. Then again, you're not using every opportunity you get to represent young "latina" girls, so theres that.
I also want to highlight afro, indigenous, and asian latino voices in the comments, who rarely have their perspectives heard, and I understand the idea of latinidad has been and is racist and dismisses these voices.
Anyways, i'm here for every perspective, from all cultures. I also apologize for any grammatical mistakes I make, my boyfriend and google translate is helping!

2024.04.17 08:17 devoteesolace Kareena is officially confirmed to star in TOXIC alongside Yash. She plays a lead role in what is said to be a brother-sister drug-mafia story!

https://x.com/HimeshMankad/status/1779907055593365856

Himesh has officially confirmed that Kareena will, in fact, star in TOXIC with Yash. She plays Yash's sister in what is said to be a story led by the two siblings with a drug-mafia backdrop. Love the fact that she's playing one of the two leads with a meaty role in a big blockbuster and not just a random romantic love interest!

Although, I don't know if her and Yash's characters are struggling against the mafia or ARE a mafia family in the film themselves, I would LOVE to see her as a drug queenpin. Need her to play a morally grey mafia queen like Sofia Vergara did in Netflix series GRISELDA recently. The potential it has!!!!!!

2024.04.15 14:35 Inner-Educator7975 Stolen youth 2

I've just seen an Instagram Reel where it says "teenagers in (my home country):" and it's Sofia vergara saying"this is where the good times happen" in front of a cut out of the disabled bathrooms at a mall.
It didn't hit quite as harshly as it used to but nevertheless it is something that saddens me. I went through the comment section and saw mention of places I know.
I'd like to think I could've done things differently but what was I supposed to do? We were poor as shit and I was depressed as fuck. I was nothing but a pure mess in those years. It sucks to regret that which was beyond my control.
Perhaps taking real advantage of the state I find my life in now, will help. I've slacked a bit in that area to focus on other things but I guess it's rather important. I just need better structure tbh after my place has been cleaned and clothes have been folded I'm going to really strategise and attack things properly.

2024.04.14 08:43 mmayor114 Dress Rehearsal Report: Ryan Gosling / Chris Stapleton 4/13/24

I was at the dress rehearsal for the Ryan Gosling episodes tonight (via standby) and can summarize what what was changed/cut to the best of my memory. If anyone else was at dress, feel free to correct or add anything I missed :)
Alien Encounter
Monologue
Engagement
Cabo Grill
Beavis and Butthead
Weekend Update: Colin Jost and Michael Che
Michael Longfellow
Caitlin Clark
Surgeons (They posted the dress rehearsal version)
Erin Brockovich
Cut for Time
\1. Canada Commercial (live sketch)
  • Ryan and Bowen speak directly to the camera in a commercial about Canada. "Not just America's hat." They say a list of things about Canada, with the last being that milk comes in a bag in Canada. They would then list some more things and then come back around to the bagged milk thing. They list famous Canadians like Shania Twain (photo), K.d. Lang (Chloe Troast stepping out), Martin Short (Chloe Troast stepping out in the same hair and costume). And they poke fun at the Canadian band The Tragically Hip. There's a quick bit where Ego and Longfellow curl across the stage. They go back to the bagged milk thing, showing how you put the bag in a pitcher and the cut the top open so you can pour and then you just kind of leave it like that. They also mention Canadian bacon and question why it is called peameal bacon in Canada.
  • Was pretty funny, but the audience didn't seem to like it so not surprised it got cut.
\2. Papyrus Sequel (Pre-Tape)
  • I'm not even gonna bother describing this now cause I assume they must be uploading it. ETA: Seems less cut-for-time and more an intentional digital exclusive.
\3. Weekend Update Correspondent: Kenan as O.J. Simpson (with Colin)
  • Kenan comes out as OJ, dressed in white with one of those fluffy white halos over his head. OJ tells Colin about how he's in heaven now and it's great. Says how he's really hungry all the time, but any time he grabs any food it turns to dust. And he plays football in heaven, too, but whenever he gets to the endzone, he fumbles the ball and it rolls all the way down the field. And the audience just stares at him and points. Also mentions snakes latching onto his nipples. And periodically a black glove appears on his hand which "fits perfectly." (A crew member under the table would sneak the glove onto his hand and then Kenan gets shocked by it). Colin questions if he really is in heaven. OJ says it is heaven cause his lawyers are there and there's a lot of priests too (audience shock reaction to priests joke). And god is there too, but he doesn't look like he expected. He doesn't have a beard and has bat wings and every day he cuts his own dick off and eats it. OJ does want to admit to something: that all his cars were rented from Enterprise. At the end, there was a slight mishap where a voiceover from "God/Satan" played and simultaneously the crew member did the glove bit again which Kenan reacted to, which drowned out the voiceover. As Kenan left the desk he shouted to the audience that the glove came too early.
\4. Escape Room (live sketch)
  • Ryan, Bowen, and Sarah are three friends led into a new section of an escape room by the host (Mikey) and are accompanied by Heidi, who is a "hot stranger" who they let join their escape room group. The trio reference a "tone" issue they had in the prior room. As they start on the new room, Ryan says something like "Guys, get it together!" and Bowen and Sarah immediately chastise him for yelling at them and then they proceed to have a back and forth with him about exactly what tone he used when he spoke to them, with Ryan saying "Guys" in various ways, eventually melodically, until they agree again. The same thing occurs except Bowen is deemed the aggressor. Mikey gives them a three minute warning, at which point Heidi admits that she's been sabotaging them by going around and swallowing keys. I think that's about where it ended.
\5. Pokemon Pitch Meeting (live sketch)
  • Ryan and Punkie are in a conference room pitching new Pokemon to Bowen and Kenan. They have an easel pad with a layout similar to a Pokemon card with at picture of a Pokemon in the top middle, with an attack listed below and below that a description. (The text on the "cards" seemed to match what Ryan and Punkie would say more or less). The first Pokemon: Pikachola, described as "Pikachu, but chola." with an image of Pikachu in stereotypical chola clothes. The rest of the Pokemon (about 3 or 4) all have some kind of existential issue. Pomobolo a mushroom Pokemon. Bobledon(?), basically just a rock with eyes, but it gets weird at parties, drinks too much, and then sends unsolicited nudes on the way home. Bowen and Kenan ask how this would battle Squirtle for instance. Ryan then describes Squirtle using water gun, Bobledon using send nudes, and then Squirtle screenshotting the nudes and sending them all to its friends and ridiculing Bobledon. Another Pokemon looks like a bunch of grapes each with a face. Two are green while the rest are purple. The two that are green are soul mates but are cursed to be on opposite sides of the bunch and never see each other. The last one was just a drawing of a woman in a skirt suit with a big hat named Miss Bianca. She is a surprise witness, so just when you think you are going to win the trial, she stomps in and ruins your defense. Bowen says all the Pokemon are approved and ready to be unleashed on the world.
I'm shocked they cut the Papyrus sequel. I also think all of the cut material was better than the Cabo Grill sketch. Perhaps they didn't want to shut out Marcello since that was his only role all night.

2024.04.13 22:49 origamialpaca Happy with my full-bottle collection! 28F

Happy with my full-bottle collection! 28F
https://imgur.com/a/xCe5wg4
I got my first perfume at age 12, and have been collecting since. A lot of perfumes have been acquired and then sold again, but now I feel like my collection is complete! I guess perfume peace does exist, after all. Aside from these full bottles I also have a number of travel sprays, mini's and samples, which I might discuss another time.
I currently work a fairly technical office job in a big city. I would describe myself as a dreamy romantic, but also quite a serious person, with a tiny bit of tomboy. I love brands like The Kooples, Allsaints, Anthropologie for fashion.
From left to right, and I will add reviews for each one: 1. Chanel - No 5 EDP It was my mom's, but she gave it to me because I loved it so much. I don't wear it very often, but if I do wear it, it makes me feel cozy and at ease. Warm, powdery, floral and spicy to my nose. I will keep this forever. 2. Chanel - No 5 l'eau EDT This is my signature scent that I wear almost every day when I go to work, and have been doing so for the last 2 years. It's like sparkling water without the bitterness, slightly sweet. Very light, clean smelling and reminiscent of No 5 EDP. I love this so much and a little goes a long way. 3. Chanel - No 19 poudré EDP Very dense, powdery, carrot-iris. This perfume smells melancholic. I finished a decant first before getting this bottle. Sometimes I find it hard to wear, because it doesn't fit my "vibe" very often, but it's very beautiful. I am looking forward to wearing this when my life calms down a bit more. 4. Givenchy - Amarige EDT My most recent blind buy. I love this. It's floral, but very natural and smooth smelling. It's tuberose and honey. It's round and beautiful, timeless. Way more wearable than No 5 EDP, if we speak of classics. 5. Tom Ford - Mandarino di Amalfi Acqua EDT Snagged this blind for a good price. It is nice. I don't wear this type of fresh citrus scent often, but it has a nice floral side to it in the middle and dry down. I have only worn it once, so I would need to spend more time with it to get to know it better. 6. Tom Ford - Eau de Vert Bohème EDT Also a blind buy. Starts very green and a bit bitter. I like it, but it's short lived and I have also only worn it once so far. Nice for tropical summers, I think. 7. Marc Jacobs - Lola EDP Lola! I have had this bottle for 13 years, since I was 15. It was never my favorite. I think the geranium makes it tricky for me. But it's a nice, girly, also a little bit alternative and gothic. A warm rosy fall scent. Not bad, but it will take a while before I'm done with this bottle, and I mostly wear it for the memories. 8. Lancôme - Magnifique EDP I love, love, love this fragrance. It has a really unique scent if you ask me. Rose with spices, warm, feminine, heavy. It's been discontinued for a while and I was lucky to find this partial bottle on Ebay. It's a winter scent for sure. 9. Panier des Sens - Precious Jasmine EDT Very natural smelling jasmine scent. It's not indolic at all. It's light and clean and airy. I find this my most "cottage core" scent. 10. Guerlain - La Petite Robe Noire Eau Fraîche EDT Fruity floral, but very interesting. It has something creamy and tart about it, with pistachio and cherry, but still manages to stay fresh. I barely wear it, but smelling it puts me in a good mood! 11. Lancôme - Trésor in Love EDP Absolutely love this scent. It's a warm rosy peach scent. Very uplifting and romantic. 12. l'Occitane - Fleurs de Cérisier EDT Cherry blossom scent. It's fresh and easy to understand. Not my most-worn, but nice in warm weather. Can get a bit cloying. 13. The Master Perfumer - Absolute Iris EDT Very lovely dry, clean iris scent. La Vie Est Belle without any of the heaviness. I have almost gone through a travel size of this. Iris is my favorite flower, and this scent is perfect for everyday wear. 14. Pacifica - Enchanted Woods Perfume A blind buy at TJMaxx that I've had for a while. It smells a bit like licorice in the beginning, but once that has gone away it's a nice woody scent. I don't grab for it often, but it isn't bad. Reminds me of antique wooden furniture. 15. Therme - Zen White Lotus EDP Musky clean lotus scent. It's more for laundry than for skin, but I like it after showering. 16. Sofia Vergara - Sofia EDP Absolutely love this. I used to own Coco Mademoiselle, but after finishing a 50ml bottle I sold my 100 ml replacement because the citrus opening started to feel too sour for me. This is a lot rounder, but the cassis leaf still adds some green sharpness. Sweeter and fruitier too, with plum as the main top note. It is the sweetest fragrance I own. 17. Cerruti - Image Woman EDT Really lovely, modern, "clean" scent. It reminds me a bit of my No 5 l'Eau, although they are not similar at all. It also reminds me of my Softsoap "Fresh Breeze" handsoap. I like to spray this on my coat before heading out. Some leathery notes, but overall a very soft scent.
Not pictured: Lush's Lord of Misrule body spray, and Revlon Fleurs de Jontue Iris.
