Recently, I went on a 30-4 TEAR with mono-black to mythic. Today I'll be providing a write-up on the deck and my thoughts on it so that other members of the community can have a go at playing it.
I personally think that dark ritual and reanimate are two of the best cards in the format, and that black also has the best interaction in the format, so I've spent a lot of time tinkering with Bx or mono-B lists since OTJ dropped. I spent a lot of time trying to make a necropotence build work, until I tried this sheoldred + ring build and saw amazing results. Yes, there's some crazy amount of luck here. An 88% winrate can't last forever. 34 games in an online ladder is almost nothing at the end of the day. But I do want to share the deck, as I'd love to see the community refine and improve this list.

Necropotence is worse than The One Ring

I really do think that this build is superior to Necropotence builds (see my first idea for this deck running necro+some devotion cards https://www.moxfield.com/decks/IEB_vC54_EOgmckgg3vzAQ ). Necropotence is a very punishing card in this format, and I really don't think its as broken as other people think. In Timeless, Necropotence is balanced by its sharp draw-backs and the high power level of the format. I think that The One Ring is a superior source of card advantage because it provides you protection for a turn, it can mitigate its own downside via the legend rule, and it can pair incredibly well with Sheoldred to stabilize and play the long game. Necropotence, on the other hand, does nothing in multiples (besides providing devotion), completely locks you out of the game if your opponent plays a pithing needle, cannot remove itself via the legend rule when you don't need more card advantage, and can't overcome its own life-loss with Sheoldred (you need to play a bad card like March and hemorrhage card advantage to make up for the life loss here).
As a quick example, I had a game against a primeval titan player where I wasn't able to sufficiently disrupt them, and they turbo'd out a prime time early. My plan was to turbo a turn 2 Sheoldred, but that's still a losing position by itself against the Primeval Titan nut draw. They had an overwhelming board of zombies that would have killed me on the next attack step, and at any moment they could topdeck Natural Order for hoof. I only had a Sheoldred in play and 4 mana available to me, but I get lucky and top-deck a Ring, buying me a turn and gaining life with Sheoldred. After drawing 3 cards with the ring and drawing for turn, I find another ring, and legend rule it for protection again. I draw more cards, another ring, legend rule it again. Opponent died to my Sheoldred triggers and Deathrite Shaman activations before they could even make another attack. A necropotence deck would not win in this situation without playing a suboptimal storm-based win condition like Beseech the Mirror + Tendrils.

Common Turn 1/2 Play-Patterns

I'd like to go over every card inclusion in the deck individually, but first I'd like to first highlight some of the most busted play patterns that will win you games for context. I love this deck because I can have a broken turn 1/2, it can interact with your opponent very well, and it can also grind with the ring. I really think you should mulligan once to try and get an opening hand with a Dark Ritual or a Reanimate if you don't see these cards in your opening 7.
  • Dark Ritual + Troll + Reanimate + Any 1 mana spell - This is the best opening hand you can have. Play your land for turn, dark ritual. If you have a thoughsieze or other 1 mana spell in hand, play it first to clear the way for your cycle+reanimate. Hopefully you'll discard your opponent's interaction or eat a spell piece so that you can cleanly resolve reanimate on Troll. Then use the other two mana to cycle then reanimate your Troll. In this position, you just put a 6/5 into play and disrupted your opponent on turn 1. Or maybe you put a 6/5 AND a deathrite shaman into play. There are very few removal spells in the format that will kill the Troll early, its nearly impossible to block the troll, and its really just 3 attack steps to kill your opponent with the troll in a fetchland format.
  • Dark Ritual + Thoughtsieze + Reanimate - In the blind, this is an interesting decision. You might want to Thoughseize alone and save your Dark Ritual for turn 2 if its game 1 and you have no other information. If you high-roll, you can get your own Atraxa on turn 1. If you low-roll and can't discard a creature, you waste a Dark Ritual. I personally prefer to only cast thoughsieze on turn 1 when I don't have any information on my opponent's hand or deck. I like to save the Dark Ritual for my turn 2 play, where I can act on the information I gained from thoughseizing with 4 mana available to me. The only exception to this is when I have other things to do with the extra Dark Ritual mana. For example, the opener could be Dark Ritual + Thoughtsieze + Reanimate + Bowmasters, where you just cast a turn 1 bowmasters if you don't discard a sweet reanimate target. Or Dark Ritual + Thoughtsieze + Reanimate + DRS + DRS. The flexibility of being able to follow up your Thoughsieze with a reanimate OR a threat based on what you see is what makes this really potent.
  • Dark Ritual + The One Ring/Sheoldred - Combined with a thoughtsieze, this is the second best opening hand the deck can have. I LOVE getting Rings and Sheoldreds out on turn 2. Its how this deck wins games. Clear the way turn 1 with a discard spell, or if you can't use a Deathrite Shaman to bait removal. Then on turn 2, go for your busted ritual turn. If you thoughsiezed turn 1, you can act on the information you gained. If your opponent is holding up a spell pierce, then don't try and turbo out a ring. If they're holding up a mana drain, let them waste their mana and just pass. The Ring will give you card advantage no matter when you play it, so you can be patient against countermagic you can play several dark rituals or threats on later turns to get through counterspells (being able to flash out bowmasters on opponent's end steps is a fantastic way to force them to tap mana to counter or remove it). Sidenote - most players will NOT counter your dark ritual and instead try to mana drain whatever you cast using the dark ritual mana. A way to get around this is to do something like cast Dark Ritual (which doesn't get countered) followed up by a Thoughseize (which they're almost forced to counter) followed up by your real threat.
  • Fair Hands (Deathrite Shaman, Bowmasters) - Wow this deck can play fair magic too! I don't need dark ritual on turn 1 to win! This deck performs great on a basic draw that interacts with your opponent. Turn 1 deathrite shaman, turn 2 discard Harvester to interact, turn 3 Ring. Or turn 1 Thoughsieze, turn 2 bowmasters, turn 3 interaction, turn 4 ring/sheoldred. If you can get to turn 4 in these sorts of games, you're generally going to win as your smother your opponent with card advantage and sheoldred triggers. In some matchups however, you might want to mulligan a slow fair hand if it doesn't interact well with your opponent's strategy.

Individual Cards

Lets go over every card and why I believe it belongs in the deck:
  • Dark Ritual - No explanation needed.
  • Reanimate - Not much explanation needed for this either, beyond the fact that you need at about a dozen enablers to make this card work. An enable is a card that can discard your opponent's creatures, or a way for you to discard your own big creature. We have a dozen exactly - 4 thoughtseize and 8 big creatures that can discard themselves. Plus, all of our other creatures are reasonable backup targets that we're happy to reanimate when the eat a removal spell.
  • Troll of Khazad-Dum - A legacy staple alongside reanimate, it serves the same purpose in this deck. It enables busted turn 1/2 reanimations of a 6/5 pseudo-unblockable creature. It dodges most removal spells in the format. It lets us lower our land count down to just 19. Its also hard-castable with Dark Ritual, similar to how Vein Ripper functions in pioneer by being a cheat target that can also be cast fairly on later turns.
  • Harvester of Misery - Listen up kids this card makes the deck click. I haven't seen anyone else really talking about this card or playing it on ladder. This is a fantastic card that serves multiple roles in the deck. It is an UNCOUNTERABLE targeted removal spell, it is a boardwipe for small creatures, it is a reanimate target that puts itself into the graveyard, and it is a 5 power threat with menace. Oftentimes, you end up discarding this on turn 2 to answer your opponent's cheap threat, and this is a good play to make regardless of whether or not you can reanimate this card. The fact that this removal spell is UNCOUNTERABLE has won me games against slow UBx decks, this is an un-counterable way to kill their bowmasters so you can get drawing cards with your Ring. Harvester's boardwipe potential is also amazing. It cleanly kills Field of the Dead tokens for example. Its discard ability can stack with its ETB if you reanimate it. For example, if your opponent is on Jund with a board of Jarsyl (3/3), bowmasters, and a DRS, you can discard this targeting Jarsyl to shrink it to a 1/1, then reanimate it to wholesale wipe your opponent's board. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE BOARDWIPE IS SYMMETRICAL - playing this guy will kill your own DRS and Bowmasters as well. I sometimes let myself fall behind on board if I'm trying to set up a big play with harvester.
  • The One Ring and Sheoldred - Lumping these together because we know how it works. These are both fantastic cards to play on Turn 2 off a ritual that can win the game. I already went over some scenarios before, and I'm sure we know how it goes by now. As I explained before, I think this package is much better than trying to play Necropotence.
  • Thoughsieze - Premium discard spell in the format, doesn't need much explanation. I will note that I am not playing Duress or Inquisition in the maindeck because they do not synergize as well with Reanimate. If there was another discard spell that could discard big creatures, I would play it. Can I thoughtsieze myself to set up reanimate? No, you're lost in the sauce. Don't do that. Point the card at your opponent please.
  • 1x Demonic Tutor - Its restricted for a reason. I'm not sure how many copies the deck would play if it wasn't restricted, as 4 copies would be a lot. But it helps a lot with consistency in the mid-late game, and I've cast it off a ritual on turn 1 when I went Dark Ritual -> Thoughseize discarding Show + Tell -> DT for Surgical Extraction -> goodbye combo piece.
  • Deathrite Shaman - This card is banned in every other format for a reason. Its a mana accelerant that is also a late-game win condition. It can gain you life in a pinch. Its passive graveyard hate. Mwah.
  • Orcish Bowmasters - This is a very good card that keeps the power level of the deck up. I don't think I need to tell you the pros and cons of bowmasters if you're reading this much about timeless. You will sideboard this card out a lot, it has good matchups and bad matchups. But man is it good in the good matchups. As I stated before, its really good against blue decks, and often can bait out counterspells or removal to clear the way for your real threats.
  • 3 Fatal Push and 1 Sheoldred's Edict - Seems like a pretty good maindeck removal suite. Maybe someone will type an essay on why it should be 4 fatal pushes and 2 edicts. Or how I can get away with less fatal pushes. This is something you can tweak if you pick up the deck.
  • 1 Maindeck Liliana of the Veil - This is a flex spot that I've swapped around a lot. Really, this is just going to become a grief in a month when MH3 drops. Turn 1 lili off a dark ritual breaks a lot of decks backs. I originally had a maindeck Ashiok in this slot, which can also be a backbreaking play against some decks but it did literally nothing against others. This slot is completely flexible, feel free to add another removal spell or your personal pet card.
  • 8 Fetchlands - I do believe you need to run fetchlands to enable your Deathrite Shaman. 8 fetchlands seems to consistently enable its mana ability, and allow me to splash green for its other lifegain ability. These fetches also let me get my utility lands.
  • 1x Underground Mortuary - Surveil land that you will fetch frequently. I am considering running two, but I don't want too many taplands to disrupt my turn 1 Dark Ritual plays. Keep in mind, Troll more or less counts as 4 tap-lands already. Our untapped land count is pretty low for a monocolor deck.
  • 1x Overgrown Tomb - Untapped land for DRS activated ability. You can also put a green card in your sideboard if you wish. I'm not, buy maybe there's a card worth playing. A light splash in on color is pretty free for this deck.
  • 1x Gate of the Black Dragon - This tap land lets you spend 5 mana to "draw a card" once. This is significantly better than drawing a card, as it guarantees you hit a nonland card, and it gets around "draw a card" punishers like Bowmasters. I find myself fetching this and activating this in slower matchups, especially when my opponent is holding up countermagic. I don't activate it super frequently, but its absolutely worth having for the price of one tapped land. FYI Troll can grab this or Mortuary when you cycle it.
  • 1x Takenuma - Pretty free way to buy back your threats. There's not enough effects in this format to punish nonbasic lands for this to not be worth running one copy of.
  • 7 basics - keeps the manabase relatively painless for a fetchland manabase.
Sideboard Cards:
  • 3 Surgical Extraction - This comes in for unfair combo decks only. Use this to rip Show + Tell from your opponent's hand, and then rip it from their deck. Only sideboard these in if you're also sideboarding in your extra discard spells, or if your opponent is filling their own graveyard.
  • 2 Duress + 2 Inquisition of Kozilek - I like having more discard spells in the sideboard. I don't like that these can't hit big creatures to reanimate, but these are for control decks and unfair decks primarily. I'm not sure if the 2/2 split here is correct, or if 4 discard spells in the sideboard is correct. Another discard spell on my radar is Mind Spike which is a duress that lets you draw a card if you "miss" at the cost of 2 life. I've run it before in Death's Shadow lists and it performed well.
  • 2 Path of Peril, 2 Meathook Massacre, and 1 Fatal Push - this is the fair deck sideboard package, which comes in against creature decks as Thoughsiezes come out. I don't always board in all 5 together, and I again don't know if this is the correct combination of spells. Perhaps some Sheoldred's Edicts or some good old fashioned Doom Blade style cards are needed instead. However I will say that both Meathook and Path of Peril have overperformed for me. Dark Ritual can enable a crazy meathook turn, and you can also hide behind The One Ring's protection and watch your opponent build up their board before delivering the boardwipe. Path of Peril lines up really well against Tarmogoyf decks, as Harvester and Meathook can struggle to kill that card. I'm 110% open to other suggestions for these slots.
  • 2 Ashiok, Dream Render - this was originally in the maindeck and got moved out to the sideboard. It can be a BACKBREAKING card to cheat out with a Dark Ritual against some decks. It's also selective graveyard hate, which I really like. I don't like playing Leyline of the Void in this deck because it nerfs my own Reanimates. However, Ashiok lets me choose when to exile my opponent's graveyard, so I can wait until I cast my Reanimate, then active the planeswalker ability. Oftentimes, you just run Ashiok as a static hatepiece for searching libraries and don't active the ability at all.
  • 1 Pithing Needle - this sideboard slot is flexible, needle is a catch-all for random combo decks that rely on activate abilities, and tough planeswalkers to beat. I originally had 2 copies of pithing needle in the sideboard. I can be convinced that its correct to turn 2 copies, and I can also be convinced to put another card in this slot.
I'm also incredibly high on this deck because of the impending addition of Grief to the format. Grief slots perfectly into this deck, and might be the card that catapults this deck to the top. This deck is already incredibly consistent in disrupting your opponent and backing that disruption up with a threat, and Grief will only take it to the next level.

TLDR

Dark Ritual is busted. You should try this deck and win some games with it. If we all work together, I'm pretty sure we can get Dark Ritual and/or Grief restricted by the end of the summer :^)

FFXIV soundtrack has many motifs/leitmotifs, but does that mean it's better, or is it becoming predictable? (data inside)
This is more to observation regarding FFXIV music I hear and I feel/think to post here
FFXIV soundtrack factually has many leitmotifs even the community have tracked all the leitmotifs in a website form. I'm a bit enthusiastic about video game soundtracks at the past, but FFXIV feels like a good place to take the data for it. However, as the content formula is going established, or for better or worse matured, I think there is a predictability in the content including the tracks because they are tied to each other. So I want to open this from the data then we talk about the tracks themselves.
Based on what I've gathered in the web, motifs are musical notes/movements/passages that are modular to use for contextual stuffs (characters/environments/moments), which further called leitmotifs. Say like a specific character coming in the stage, the notes are played similarly which makes the music memorable by using leitmotif technique. This is also frequently used in FFXIV too.
However, there must have something in the balance. Too reliant on motifs may sound boring. But no motifs may sound nothing or less memorable (unless they make you pump it out). With motifs and leitmotifs together, you can also predict the scene what will happen next. But you may argue not every moment must have motifs so that it can decrease predictability, or not everything must be reliant to it so that it may sound unique. I believe there is a technique for that. In the end, it's the composers'/arrangers' ability to create. They can use it, but it's about how they insert those. It can be subtle in plain sight, or blatantly in your face.
You may feel this kind of thing, and I feel that too. But because I am usually data driven, I would like to share the data, accompanied by how the game is designed. The game design is also crucial for the music itself.

The Data

To use the data. I use my sound tracker data whose the leitmotif tracker is based from the compendium. Here's the data I've collected so far
Album version. Imgur is blurry on mobile so you may refer to the sheet itself above. Too complicated? Alright then, I'll upload it here
FFXIV 1.0 is kinda minimal on motifs besides classic FF motifs
ARR motifs are increasing. Not to deny the major relaunch of the game
ARR 2.x is minimal in comes into reusability
Heavensward 3.0 was the first to establish the formula, hence high reusability
Then followed by 3.x which was the early template for future motifs
Stormblood 4.0 has high reusability based on the field themes, but still not as much as Heavensward. You can neglect other one-off FF themes (I blame collaborations)
Shadowbringers has high reusability, may on par or more then Heavensward. Ignore the 1s, they're bloated anyway
Shadowbringers patches are also good while maintaining the post patch status compared the launch patch
Endwalker is simplified but you can see the numbers are much higher. Maybe too much?
Too many 1s man. But also many motifs from previous versions are represented again

The Content and Implementation

For main expansion motifs, they can be separated into pieces. However, main expansion motifs usually being reordered to give variety, but still the same. This is the case for:
  1. Main theme: stores all the motifs <- the templates are here
  2. Field battle: some open world mobs
  3. Cities: most main theme motifs end up in here but in different flavors
  4. Field hub (aetherite)
  5. Dungeon midboss
  6. Dungeon boss
  7. Most cutscenes: usually for the expansions they can have 7 out of 10 tracks that shares the motifs inside the main theme
  8. Solo duties/story battles: usually tied to some parts of the main theme
  9. Occasionally some trials: usually for crucial trials there are some motifs in the main theme
  10. Occasionally some dungeons
  11. Occasionally some fields that is crucial enough to have main motif in main theme
With at least 11 categories related to main theme motifs, it is a fact that main theme is the most used within expansion. Let's say Heavensward motif. It has many and consistent motifs that can span to other contents outside what I mentioned in the list. Because expansions here are treated like a book or a movie serial, they need to use different motifs per season.
For field motif, especially at the expansions, usually used in 3 tracks:
  1. Field day
  2. Field night
  3. Dungeons: each field usually has a dungeon, so they rather use that field's motif to simplify the process
Each FFXIV expansions usually has 6 fields. This is actually many, just reuse the motifs then you're done. In fact field themes are foundational. It started from main field day theme, then getting a piano rendition in night theme, then make an intense version in dungeon theme.
That means, you can estimate for each expansion, you probably get at least 11 main categories + 6 fields * 3 = 29 tracks. It can be more if we count more cutscene music and other eventful music that uses motifs. It can be approximately 35 tracks with motifs, but that is in estimate.
Yes, I made the numbers above without reference, but let's go to the real data. Let's open Endwalker album as the example. Here's what I get. This writing is going too messy later
With 63 tracks, you can see some major numbers are at least proven compared to approximate
Notes:
  1. Main theme is expected. However, FFXIV usually has two main themes. In Endwalker's case, it's "Endwalker" and "Flow" as they are usually promoted in their YT channel. This main theme can be applied the category I mentioned before. Let's say 12 tracks
    1. Endwalker motif is used in most cutscenes
    2. Flow motif is also used in most cutscenes. Sometimes it also tandems with Endwalker motif
  2. Cities: 2 day, 2 night, 1 neutral. That uses "Flow" motif. That goes 5
  3. Story cutscene: of 11 tracks, there are 3 independent tracks. That goes 7
  4. Dungeon midboss and boss. That's 2
  5. Each field has dungeon. It's 6 fields*3+2 extra dungeons = 20
WIth this, you can get at least 12+5+7+2+20= 46 tracks with related motifs. It may be inaccurate, but you may get the picture
With Endwalker data above, I've counted that only 5/63 tracks (~8%) that are independent from the motifs.

Motifs/Leitmotifs are contextual, but how predictable in FFXIV?

Predictability here comes into sections:
  1. The events. May be a place, character, or some game elements
  2. How the music is made. May be the composition/arrangement itself
It may be predictable for main and field themes because how the game is structured. It could be better or worse. You may suggest like this:
  1. Make the field theme variative.
    1. The open field has two methods. Loop the track or play-silent-play the track. If the latter is used, it would be beneficial to have variant tracks. Take Genshin as the example. The open nature of that game allows to cycle the tracks. In fact, FFXIV ARR had this method especially in La Noscea, Thanalan, and Black Shroud. They have multiple movements in a track hence why the track is long. The question: should they revisit that method?
  2. Make the music longer or variate the melody
    1. If the gameplay is around the 2 minute meta, you don't realize that the music anecdotally follows that too. That is a single take without loop. You can variate by extend the music for a bit or maybe at least rearrange them.
    2. The concrete example I got is Monster Hunter music. That game has many renditions of monster themes while keeping the same melody. They have variations across the melody too
But there is a shock factor which makes it unexpected
Shock factor here means you don't expect one/some of the motifs are applied in the scene you are currently in. For example, who would think The Twinning music is a combination of Crystal Tower and Omega motif? Who would also think Anamnesis Anyder uses long buried Sastasha motif? How about mash all the old motifs in your face like how they made "Embers" which includes all tracks related to Lahabrea? How do you expect "Dynamis" comes back to "Flow" motif? This factor makes one of the most memorable musical experience in FFXIV.

Bonus: I already know who made this track

Related posts:
  1. How to spot FFXIV composer
  2. A Thread of Interviews and Showcases Related to CBU3 music team (FFXIV and FFXVI)
I just leave those here because this topic may be related to them and how the music workflow goes. In the end, you can predict who composes/arranges the music based on the style/implementation

Closing

And so that's it. What do you think about current formula of FFXIV music? Has it become better or worse?
I have ongoing survey about FFXIV music. You can pick before a week before Dawntrail!

I gonna edit this later. I know the writing is getting messier

I am omitting purely text changes and only listing functional changes. I will update this post as more discoveries are made.

Disgust / / Take My Hand

Mombasa, The Union of African Socialist Republics
vibe

"Upheaval of the world, French Guiana the last stand of the West?"

"The torturous end of the Russian hyper-state has sparked a crisis for an increasingly volatile world."

Bandung Daily Issued August 1st, 2072 - 12:00 Mombasa, The Union of African Socialist Republics
MOMBASA - It would seem that the fall of the Great Russian Goliath had been in the making the moment that Dederick Lohengrin's empire collapsed, yet unlike the Álfheimr Civil War - the collapse of Russian Hegemony would be as swift as the dissolution of its predecessor, the Soviet Union. There was no tears to weep, no alliance to mourn, the Eastern Union had long ceased to be anything less than an arms manufacturer for the Bandung Pact - growing increasingly obsolete in the face of an expanding Pact technology network.
How many times had the world called for Russian aid? As much as the Russian and Eastern Union governments had decried the lack of a Western response to the original Downfall of Europe, by the late forties, the Eastern Union so overwhelmed with corruption, had become the very thing that those early Eastern Union ambassadors had loathed - they had, in essence, become the very thing they found disgusting. Italy, fallen at the hands of the Alfr and the Eastern Union did nothing. The countless provocations of the Aesir and never an adequate response, a Japanese Empire chipping away at the very bones of Eastern Union hegemony and in the end, it was only the intervention of INC diplomacy (theorized) that prevented the consumption of anything more than Manchuria. Even as the very Russian nation-state collapsed inward, not even the Bandung Pact could do more than give a shake of their heads while scalping away much of the Russian technological base in a way not dissimilar to the early East African efforts to save the Israeli industry. And as the once Karakum Union once again declared nominal independence from the broader Russian entity, the beginning of the end for Eastern Europe was once again nigh.
Therefore, it was no surprise when the Garden of Eden spread its roots through the former Polish hyper-state, the tendrils of Iohannis grasping at every fallen fruit, each an offering to the Earth Mother (so it's called in Eastern Europe). It was no surprise when the Second Roman Republic, what was once Greece, and the machinations in Yugoslavia equally unified under an expanded Republic partially at the behest of a significant diaspora of Italian veterans of the Gothic Wars. It was no surprise, when in the face of the spreading vines of Kyiv, that the UNSC under all its providence as a GIGAS member - initiated the annexation of what was once Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. It was no surprise, when the Bandung Pact did what it could to funnel Russian troops, assets, and civilians out of a collapsing hyper-state. It was no surprise, when the vulture of the Midnight Sun descended on Siberia, consuming Vladivostok and moving into Mongolia and across Lake Baikal.
It was however a surprise when radio messages of a free Europe, began quietly skimming across morning news in the Bandung Pact. It was a surprise when those same messages soon led to declaration of a new "Atlantic Russian Republic", when those radio waves turned into surviving Russian fleets massing in the last quietly surviving Russian territory that all but Russia had forgotten of. At one of the many mouths of the Amazon jungle, stood the Atlantic Russian Republic and the last bastion of Free Europe in the West. The fleets of the Polish-Russian hyperstate had under Bandung support, skulked quietly into the Atlantic Ocean under new flags, until eventually landing in French Guiana. Much like the French Remnant State which survived as the last offshoot until it was eventually subsumed by the Russian government, the Atlantic Russian Republic now stands as a mini Fortress-state, housing the vast Russian Navy and all its kinetic and rocketry might. Just as the French Free Navy slowly starved to death, so too, now does the Russian Navy in its hole across the Ocean. And with a resource crisis still ongoing even if neutered now by the rampant space mining operations of the hyper-powers, the Russian Navy in exile's position remains ever volatile.
November 20th, 2072
Tallinn, Estonia (UNSC Protectorate)
The wind and snow was heavy even for November, that was the thought going through the old dog's head as he watched his ward, the Princess Estelle addressing the rows of former Russian soldiers. And as she finished, the guns ringing out signaling the formalization of the groundwork laid so many years ago it was not hard for the General to maintain his stoic nature as the procession of soldiers filed out of the great hall that had been constructed in Tallinn. Like so many others, they had become nationless men, effectively dead and yet still very much alive and willing to fight.
"So this is what your deal bought you." the ex-Prime Minister, ex-President, Katz finally broke his silence as Princess Estelle made her way back under the cover of the gallery. "My Baltics, turned into the Fens."
There was a sadness to the eyes of the fair-haired Princess, one letting on only a fraction of the pain she had experienced over the past year. "My cousin...he told me this would be an early birthday present." She lowered her head out of respect to the Russian ex-minister. "Had I known...what all that would have entailed, I would have certainly declined."
Timo Kivinen, the General of so many things by now, knew there was bountiful more that the Princess would have wanted to share in that very moment. He had heard it, when they had first been informed of the operation. He had seen Estelle's outrage, as the good Prince George did his best to calm his dear wife. But now, in the aftermath of the Russian Collapse, Estelle had put on her brave face and in true STOICs fashion - mustered a smile and a bout of levity.
"I once asked my cousin to remember us as his family, I hadn't expected this is the path to be walked by our kin." Estelle cracked a wry smile, as she started walking towards the exit. "But there is more to come, isn't that right, General?"
"Yes." Timo nodded, as his thoughts turned to the fleets amassing in the Atlantic.
"What now?" Katz questioned, not expecting much of an answer.
"Promises to keep, we have promises to keep." Estelle's gaze turned towards the Sun and the thought of warm waters.

CLAIM REVEAL: THE EASTERN UNION STATES (MAP)

The Atlantic Russian Republic

  • DETAILS
  • Head of State: Maxim Katz
    • Other Important Characters (meta control)
    • Those mentioned in bigrockswilderness Fleet Posts for Poland
  • Population: 3,863,000 (including Naval and Marine personnel that evacuated Russia)
  • Claim Starting Allotments (IE. Special Starting Scenario)
    • Has the ability to access a secret campaign (ALL THROUGH PLAYER INITIATIVE) to reclaim the Western Russian Remnant state in Europe.
    • Has control of 80% of the Russian Navy in entirety
    • Must find remedies for resource drain of the Fleet, or face narrative repercussions.
    • Starts with SECRET information that could lead to the expansion of the claim, early on.
    • Handing over the fleets, or coming under another's thumb or like-scenarios will result in a Naval mutiny. IE. this is not a viable "easy" option to deal with your lack of resources. There will be warning events.
    • Is not immediately aligned with anyone.
    • Has access to the entire Russian tech book (so to speak).
Things to Consider
The Atlantic Russian Republic (ARR) or better, the Russian Fleet in Exile is intended on being a claim that requires heavy amounts of player initiative through the early period of the season to survive. However, can blossom into a rewarding claim if played well.
This is a difficult claim in general, and you can expect to be under fire from many enemies as the Alfr remnant states (North America in particular) and the Bandung Pact both look to subsume or sink your fleets.

The Garden of Eden

  • DETAILS
  • Head of State: The Earth Mother - Klaus Iohannis
    • Other Important Characters (meta control)
    • Zalmoxis
    • Prophet Amir
    • Burebistan
    • Pleistoros
  • Population: Not currently calculable
  • Claim Starting Allotments (IE. Special Starting Scenario)
    • Begins with 30% of the Russian Army - corrupted.
    • Receives [BATTLE] bonuses based on the level of "perversion" and its spread across not just the Garden, but of the world. This is internally tracked by the Mods.
    • Likewise, receives automatic NEGATIVE amplifiers to [DIPLOMACY] with NPCs. (You are really freaking out the Japanese and INC AlfRussian remnants.)
    • Has access to the entire Russian tech book (so to speak).
Things to Consider
This is a fairly niche claim, having to wrestle with both the Alfr, INC, and Japan in the immediate vicinity - while attempting to repair (or destroy) relations with other surrounding neighbors as you look more inward.

The Second Roman Republic

  • DETAILS
  • Head of State: Gaius Appuleius Diocles
  • Population: 60,800,196
  • Claim Starting Allotments (IE. Special Starting Scenario)
    • Ceasar's Legions = meta control over approx 200,000 battle-hardened Italian veterans of the Gothic Wars.
    • These legions will specifically receive significant [BATTLE] bonuses when used against Alfr remnant states. However, they are a finite number, each casualty being irreplaceable.
    • Additionally - the Legions have an expressed goal = reclaiming Rome (Italy). If this is not met by the 2/3rd mark of the Campaign, there will be IG repercussions of significant magnitude.
    • Begins the Campaign with positive diplomatic relations with ALL NPCs including Japan, non-playable Bandung Pact members, and non-claimable Alfr remnants. The only exception is TURKEY.
    • Has access to the entire Russian tech book (so to speak).
Things to Consider
The Second Roman Republic is a particularly interesting claim, due to its immediate diplomatic "neutrality through positive relations" and the fact that they have a legitimate claim to Italy if not Rome at large. However, they are also surrounded by power-hungry hyper-states that have increasingly small amounts of room to expand.

2024.05.21 07:57 OhHeyMister Anyone down to workshop a pride deck? Nixilis Starn, Kingmorph

So my friends and I are gonna celebrate the pride event on Cockatrice (aka no budget). We're gonna do some high power games and some more chill ones. For the high power, I think I've settled on [[Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin]] + [[Ghyrson Starn, kellermorph]]. I think the synergy is there. The pingers still trigger Ob to impulse draw, before Starn chips in his +2 dmg. Having access to orcish bowmasters in starn is pretty fucking sick tbh... plus black tutors.
We got Thoracle and breach lines, plus Niv curiosity and of course Ob nix and all will be one. And if that fails, we can still burn their faces off.
Niv also would be sweet with Ob, as he is a pinger and another combo piece in the CZ but idk he's hard to cast.
Anyway, I'm not super skilled at building these kinds of decks so any ideas you have would be super. I've been pulling off of cEDH lists and Edhrec mostly. Let me know what ya think.

2024.05.20 23:33 WideTimothy “All out to MIT”: Exploiting campus access at the MIT and Harvard camps

Why did Harvard protestors dismantle their own camp, while MIT’s camp was dismantled by police? One explanation I’ve heard is that Harvard showed patience, listened to students, and worked out a deal. I see a simpler explanation: Harvard closed its gates, MIT could not. MIT’s open campus was leveraged dangerously by visitors and made Harvard's hands-off approach impossible. I worry about how these events will change the open campus that most of us value.
The differences between Harvard and MIT's encampment risks are the focus of this post. To be clear, I am not claiming that MIT students or administrators made the best or only decisions available. We don’t know what lay at the end of roads not taken.
Many at MIT have been closer to these events than me, so it helps if they can add other relevant facts in the comments. I try to use third-party sources, but I include protestor and admin sources where third parties exclude important details.
Events at Harvard
Harvard Yard is fully fenced. During past protests and encampments, Harvard has closed all its gates.[1][2] Harvard shut the gates again well before its encampment began.[3] By restricting the Yard to Harvard ID access, Harvard’s administration could afford to be patient.
Once the camp began on April 24, the gates locked out visiting protestors and counterprotestors.[3][4] Harvard’s pro-camp and anti-camp students were free to escalate, and did many times, but they could not welcome other groups into the campus.[1]
On May 10, Harvard issued involuntary leaves to twenty remaining student campers and effectively locked them in the Yard. Suspended campers couldn’t enter through ID checkpoints, so leaving the Yard for any reason meant abandoning the camp. Within the Yard, campers lost access to bathrooms and food.[3][4] Under this duress, the four remaining residents of the camp submitted to Harvard’s demands and declared that the camp had “outlived its usefulness.”[3]
By tightly controlling access, Harvard had little to gain by bargaining with the camp and not much to lose by letting it be. Administrators successfully excluded visitors and later exercised their option to blockade the camp. In the end, their only real concession to the camp was to reconsider the suspensions.[3]
Events at MIT
On April 21, MIT’s camp began on the Kresge lawn, one of the most accessible spaces on MIT’s campus. For two weeks, MIT camp stayed open to all and was peacefully managed, despite efforts by some to escalate and spark conflicts. Some anti-camp students and visitors sought to provoke campers into disputes and pressure MIT to intervene against the camp.[5] On May 1, some pro-camp students began to block arterial roads and organize unannounced secondary protests.[6] Each group sought to raise the cost of MIT’s inaction.
The “peaceful equilibrium” was cushioned by MIT camp marshals, police, faculty, and staff.[5] But it tipped on May 3, when the Israeli American Council and Boston's Party for Socailism and Liberation (BPSL) each called hundreds of visitors to dueling events around the campsite.[7][8][9] Actions by chapters of these groups were a prelude to the violence against campers at UCLA and the building occupation at Columbia.[10][11] Although marshals and police could keep the peace between small groups, the outside protests dwarfed all earlier events. Meanwhile, students declared the camp's basic demand non-negotiable, ending an option for settlement.[12][13]
Ahead of the dual protests, MIT tried to impose camp access controls. Unable to close the Kresge lawn to outside groups, MIT instead put tall construction fences around the camp to limit entrypoints and “maintain separation” between protests.[12][13][14] MIT Police added MIT ID checks several days later, creating the access conditions Harvard had from the start.[13][14] Pro-camp students took offense at these efforts. One student described “how tone-deaf it is to fence in people in people and add a checkpoint” to an encampment for Palestinian rights.[14]
On May 6, after a final round of negotiations failed, MIT demanded all students leave the camp or face interim suspensions.[12][13][15] Picking up notices by student groups, at least four outside groups published “all out to MIT” broadcasts. One of these callouts came from a group advising followers to refuse negotiations, barricade buildings, and use black-bloc tactics to incite police crackdowns. Hundreds of MIT affiliates and visiting protestors amassed at the campsite and surrounded police.[16][17] In a simultaneous action aided by the BPSL, local high school students arrived for a rush-hour sitdown blockade of Mass Ave.[18][19][20] As crowds increased and actions multiplied, protestors demolished the fence and re-entered the camp en masse.[16][17]
The May 6 standoff proved everyone was right to worry about their respective worst cases. Clearly, no one controlled who showed up at the camp or on campus. Clearly, overtly violent groups had entered the fray, while others enlisted high schoolers to join in. Clearly, MIT was planning to end the camp. And clearly, protestors would reject efforts to control camp access and security. The actions on May 6 put de-escalation and life safety measures well beyond anybody’s reach.
A few days later, MIT suspended over twenty students, although students were still free to enter and leave the camp.[12][13] Unlike Harvard, MIT called state police to close the camp and arrest ten students who refused the option to leave.[12][13]
Holding the Gates Open
Harvard locked out visiting protestors, locked in protesting students, and sapped the camp's remaining resolve. MIT initially allowed open access to the campsite, having few other options. When open access became unstable, students and visitors rejected the administration’s effort to impose access control.
It would be nice if skillful negotiation explained Harvard’s police-free resolution. But over the life of the two camps, the biggest difference is that Harvard kept its gates shut. There may have been other paths MIT could have taken, but Harvard’s path wasn’t one of them.
Generations of MIT students, staff, alums, police, administrators, and faculty have worked to keep MIT’s campus “aggressively ungated.”[21] During the encampment, our openness was weaponized against us. Visitors were summoned to escalate student actions and aggress members of our community. It seems “all out to MIT” tactics are here to stay, if the BPSL’s notices about other MIT protests this year are any indication.
Among many other hard questions that MIT faces right now, I wonder how we will be able to hold the gates open.

2024.05.20 23:20 MsNxx Pegasus Project opinions

I thought I'd try to jot down some thoughts on the Pegasus Project, now that we've had all some time to dig into it a bit. Would love to hear what you all thought of the new album.
Overall I felt like it's a little flabby, like this post :) But it has some great music and some of SM's best vocals in years. If we removed the duds, the dupe tracks, the segues, and separated off the orchestral versions of old songs from previous albums into its own thing, it starts to resemble a really tight album.
Going through the tracks:
  1. Pegasus Presents - segue, ignore
  2. The Birthday Song! - honestly, this one is a dud for me lyrically. I love the guitar and vocals, I feel there might be a great song there potentially with a change of lyrics and theme. pass.
  3. Mr. Magoo - another dud, bit too silly but it's beautifully produced. also a little tired of the mythology stuff tbh. pass.
  4. I Will Wait - it's a grower, would love to hear it with less "wet" vocals. okay
  5. Pretty Baby Prelude - segue, ignore
  6. Pretty Baby - I loved this on Angels & Vampires, really great song so delighted to hear this new version with live strings. I think I like it more than the original! love it.
  7. Ben Dover - segue, ignore
  8. Ben Downs - it's okay but the chorus grates on my ears a bit. okay
  9. The Things U Like - such a cool song, best single so far imho. love it
  10. Life Will Go On - really infectious, catchy, fun, i love the harmonies on the chorus, and the synths w/ acoustic guitar. so unusual, love it!
  11. Pegasus & the Swan - feels a bit like a demo, but I like the main vocal hook and the guitar arpeggios, it builds nicely with the flute sounds etc. it's growing on me!
  12. New World Forming - not one of my favourites from Prometheus & Pandora, but the orchestral version is interesting. okay
  13. Bondage - not good imho
  14. BDSM - segue, ignore
  15. Nice Things - I didn't really understand this one. Maybe need to give it another chance, but it just seems a bit silly and throwaway. I kinda dislike faux reggae.
  16. Camden Town - it's likeable and fun, growing on me.
  17. Selfish - worst thing on the album imho, along with Birthday Song
  18. Being Watched - sexy, weird, experimental demo thingl! could live without it.
  19. Waiting 4 the Light 2 Change - always great to hear SM singing a capella, and glad to hear one or two flat notes left unfixed too. i love it.
  20. Let's Come Together - one of the better segues, but I tend to ignore these anyway
  21. A Horse that Flies - segue, ignore
  22. Love is Blind - I love this, very funky and poppy! one of my faves on the album, the strings add so much as well! love it!!
  23. Walk On - another very funky number, why save all the great stuff for part 2? Madness. This has Jellybean from The Time as well, love it.
  24. I Have a Dream - pretty good, great lead vocals and guitar! I'm into it
  25. The Last Word - has some heavy guitar, some nice synthy parts and drum programming, really cool, builds nicely.
  26. New World Forming - kinds annoying to hear this song from Prometheus & Pandora a second time on the same album, with a different lead vocalist. She's fantastic but it feels like filler.
  27. Hiawatha - another revisited old track from Prometheus & Pandora, this time an orchestral version with a different lead vocalist, Luisa is a great singer but I think I prefer the original version. I tend to skip this one.
  28. Her Kiss - orchestral version of the song on Pandora's Playhouse. Still a great song.
  29. Time Takes A Timeout - segue, but one of the nicer ones with church organ.
  30. Time Takes Time - of course, another revisited song from Angels & Vampires. still fantastic, the strings make it seem a bit overblown maybe? I still love it despite the schmaltz.
  31. She's Sad - string quartet version of the original on The Sphinx, really lovely. I think I prefer these rather than the big orchestral things.
  32. Share Your Pain - another one from Angels & Vampires, this string quartet version is really fantastic
  33. Madame Swan - another highlight of the album for me, works very well in sequence after the previous few songs. Did SM re-record his vocals on this? Sounds so great.
  34. Pegasus & the Swan Serenade - I much prefer this version with strings, over the earlier version. so great.
  35. Nice Things (the Echo's Edge Mix) - it wasn't great the first time, so this second version with a different lead vocalist is just yuck. Beatrice is fantastic but the lyrics are so silly, and not easy for a non-native English-speaker to sing well. I tend to skip this.
  36. Coda - the Sluggish Thugs vs the Thuggish Slugs - segue, ignore
  37. The Birthday Song (Gluten Free Mix) - still a dud for me, maybe I like this version slightly better than the previous version.
  38. Ben Dover Again - segue, ignore
  39. Paradise Postponed Sonata - lovely instrumental piano track, nice to include this imho
  40. The Final Word - segue, pretty funny, reminds me of the segue near the end of Neither Fish Nor Flesh.
  41. & a Swan that Never Dies - segue
Phew! Final verdict - I don't think it works as a coherent studio album, but there are some great songs in there if you care to dig in deep. I'm doing a resequenced playlist, will post it soon :)

2024.05.20 12:14 Wannabe_Sadboi Vegan Gains Made Me Break Bad

SPOILER WARNING FOR ALL OF BREAKING BAD
Today, I decided to check in on favorite streamer Destiny’s late night stream, and saw my favorite vegan bodybuilder Vegan Gains come on (at about two and a half hours into the stream) to absolutely trigger me talking about Breaking Bad.
Now, of all the things going on, the Iranian president just dying being one of them, is this the thing to talk about? The answer is of course yes, because this is what triggered me.
Also, before I get into any of these takes, let me preface two things: one is SPOILER WARNING, and two is that it is fine to like/dislike any piece of media. I personally love Breaking Bad, I think it’s an awesome show, but it is fine to dislike a piece of media. What I think is very dumb to do is come on and give reasons which are just objectively wrong, and show a complete misunderstanding of the show, and this is what Vegan Gains did several times.
He has multiple points that he accuses of being bad writing/plot holes, but as are often the case, this is bad writing/plot holes to Vegan Gains only because he is not paying attention to the show. The three main points he makes as being “bad writing” is Walter refusing the money from his old business partners but working at the car wash, Walter being a “mastermind” but doing stupid shit, and Gus killing his lab assistant Victor when he can perfectly do what Walter did. All three of these are easily counter-able with evidence from the show, and I will break each down one by one.
1. Walter White’s “Pride”
One thing that Vegan Gains brings up is that Walter ostensibly wants all this money for his cancer, but he turns down the offer by his old partners at Grey Matter, Gretchen and Elliot, to fund his cancer treatment. VG says this is excused by fans due to Walter’s “pride”, but this does not fit, as if Walter had all this pride, why would he have been working at the car wash and getting laughed at by teenagers?
So, first point: the show is abundantly clear that Walter’s motivation is not the money. There are a few implicit examples of this, with an obvious one being that despite the amount of money he “needs” for his family being calculated by him as 737,000 dollars, he continues to reach for more and more money even as it puts him in more and more danger and the immoral acts he needs to do to get this money only increase. But, even more importantly, are the explicit lines by Walter. When he is talking to Jesse, he utters the infamous line “Jesse you asked me if I was in the money business or the drug business. Neither. I’m in the empire business.” When he talks to Skylar in the final season, he acknowledges “I did it for me. I liked it. I was good at it. I was really… I was alive.”
He does not do it for the money. He does it because it makes him feel powerful and makes him feel like he’s finally getting what he believes he’s entitled to. In addition, he does it (and this is extremely important for him turning the money down from Gretchen and Elliot) because he feels like the biggest mistake of his life, which he describes to Jesse in the prelude to the line above, was accepting a “buy out” on his position in Grey Matter.
So why does Walter want the money? Because of his pride, yes, but also because Walter wants his family to know that he can provide and he can get them the money. When he talks to Saul Goodman about how to explain the money, Walter turns down Saul’s ways to give his family the money because “It cannot be blind luck or some imaginary relative who saves us… I earned the money! Me! And now my son created his own website- SaveWalterWhite.com- soliciting anonymous donations! Do you have any idea how that makes me feel?” This is also shown when Gus appeals to him, where Gus’s line to manipulative and convince him is “A man provides.”, a transparent appeal to Walter’s ego (and one that, of course, works).
So why does he turn down Gretchen’s offer? It is obvious, and makes perfect sense with his character. The same people who screwed him over with this buy out not only get to get away with that, but they get all the credit for saving his family? No, absolutely not- this is unacceptable to Walter.
Well okay sadboi, well if that’s the case, why is he okay slaving away doing embarrassing work at the car wash? Well… he’s not for very long. The Walter we meet in the very first episode is a man who has embraced a life of mediocrity, but he is shaken out of this by his cancer diagnosis and his plan to cook meth. This transition, and his decision to radically alter his life, is literally the whole point of the show’s title, and at the heart of this exchange with Jesse, where as Walter puts it, he is “awake!”.
But even before this (and you can see this with the pilot plot summary)), Walter quits the car wash in dramatic fashion. So no, this is not some massive plot hole, since as soon as he gets the cancer diagnosis and reevaluates his life in the very first episode, Walter’s pride kicks in and he refuses to continue the embarrassing car wash job… just as he refuses Gretchen’s offer. It makes perfect sense with his character.
2. Walter The “Mastermind”
Walter is an extremely talented chemist, and often quite good with his back against the wall in the heat of the moment, but he is clearly depicted as not being a mastermind and often only surviving being arrested or killed due to dumb luck. The very first episode has him recording his confession because he thinks he’s gonna be arrested, and this is after barely surviving being killed by two armed men in the first deal he ever does.
He is then routinely, throughout the show, saved by either just luck (ironically) or things completely out of his control. He is almost taken to Mexico by Tuco and his cousins, but is saved by Jesse shooting Tuco and Hank happening to show up (episode summary)). He is blackmailed by Jane and Jesse, and only avoids this due to them passing out from heroin (episode summary)). He is going to be killed by Tuco’s cousins, and is saved only moments from death by a text from Gus (episode summary). I could keep going, but Walter is not some criminal mastermind, he is surviving based on luck and the good will of others who want to use him.
This is also stated by other characters, including Saul who routinely mocks Walter’s criminal ineptitude, Gus who hates Walter’s sloppiness and recklessness, and Mike, who calls Walt out in this famous scene, pointing out how Gus had an empire he maintained for years and that Walter ruined in months.
And even when he does get figured out by Hank, it’s because of a tremendously stupid and prideful decision. He decides to keep the Leaves of Grass book given to him by Gale in his bathroom, since it praises him, even though it connects him to Gus and to Heisenberg.
So no, Walter isn’t a mastermind, and as another example of the show’s excellent and consistent writing, it is often his pride which drives his dumbest decisions. Meaning that not only is this not a plot hole, it’s actually another example of what makes the show great.
3. Why Did Gus Kill Victor?
This will be the shortest section, because this is the easiest and most black and white. Gus killed Victor because Victor got himself seen at a murder scene. Not only is this explicitly shown, but Mike then asks if he was seen, and in a later scene, we’re shown this police sketch of him.
And no, Gus doesn’t explicitly say this, but through the evidence we’re shown and Mike’s reaction, the reason is obvious. In addition to this, the idea that just because Victor could ape Walter’s process he’d also be able to handle singlehandedly running the entire lab and deal with any issue is extremely doubtful (especially as we’re already told by Gus that for the lab to shut down for even a few days is absolutely unacceptable to him).
TL;DR: It’s okay to not like a show, but don’t do it for the dumbest reasons that are easily disprovable with evidence from the show.
