comparison of largest NFL contracts in salary cap era

2024.05.19 10:00 guest_from_Europe comparison of largest NFL contracts in salary cap era

I will compare contracts by how much % of team salary cap player took in a year: a $10M player "eats more cap" when team salary cap is $100M than a $13M player on $200M team cap. All numbers are from overthecap.com

  60. Marvin Harrison 10% in 2003, 2004, 2008
  61. Barry Sanders 10.1% in 1994, 10.7% in 1996
  62. Ray Lewis 10% in 2003, 2005
  63. McNabb 9-10%, only in 2009 16%
  64. Mike Evans 10.4% in 2023, 9.4% in 2018
  65. Julio Jones 10% in 2016, 2020
cheaper players for comparison:
  1. McNair 8-10% of Titans, highest in 1999
  2. J.J. Watt 8-9% in 4 seasons
  3. Emmitt Smith 7-9% in 1990s, 14.5% in 2002
  4. Dalton 8-9% (cheap QB)
  5. Travis Kelce 7.8% in 2024, 6.7% in 2023
  6. Jerry Rice 7.3% in 2000, 6.1% in 1999
  7. Tony Gonzalez 7% of 2011 Falcons, 6% of Chiefs
  8. DeMarcus Ware 6-7% of Cowboys, Broncos
  9. Gronkowski 6% in only 2 Patriots' seasons
  10. Zack Martin 5-6%
  11. Antonio Gates 5-6%
  12. Jason Kelce 3-4%
These are contracts that i could find over 10% of cap space + some HOFers at other cheaper positions for comparison. Mario Williams probably got the worst, most expensive contracts compared to his production. T. J. Watt costs a lot more than his older brother. MVP RBs Faulk, Tomlinson, E. Smith were 5-9%. DBs such as Polamalu, Reed,... were always in 5-8% range, it's probably like that at all positions except for QBs.
These expensive contracts worked very well for Colts (Manning, Harrison), Chiefs (Mahomes, Jones), Packers (Rodgers), Steelers (Roethlisberger, Watt), Broncos (Manning), Patriots (Brady), 49ers (Young, Williams), Vikings (Peterson), otherwise there are a lot of seasons around .500 record or losing in wild card as a low seed. Rarely was a contract of 13+ % of cap good. Flacco's contract sank Ravens, Eli's Giants etc. Some teams paid a lot for Brunell, Plummer, Bledsoe...
Now current contracts:

% of team salary cap active contracts, projections

  1. Watson 22.0% in 2024, 24.6% in 2025
  2. Prescott (currently) 21.2% in 2024 + 15% dead cap in 2025
  3. Stafford 19.3% in 2024, 19.4% in 2025
  4. K. Murray 18.2% in 2024, 16.7% in 2025, 18.8% in 2026
  5. Daniel Jones 18.4% in 2024 + dead cap in 2025
  6. Cousins 20.2% in 2026, 15.4% in 2025
  7. Mahomes 14.7% in 2024, 25.5% in 2025 (can easily be lowered)
  8. L. Jackson 16.8% in 2025, 26.3% in 2026
  9. Allen 16.6% in 2025, 22.5% in 2026
  10. Carr 19.8% in 2025
  11. Burrow 17.8% in 2025, 17% in 2026
  12. Herbert 14.4% in 2025, 16.3% in 2026
  13. Goff 12.5% in 2025, 24.5% in 2026
  14. Chris Jones 13.4% in 2025
  15. Trent Williams 13.1% in 2025
  16. Tyreek Hill 12.2% in 2024, 13.2% in 2025
  17. T.J. Watt 11.8% in 2024, 11.7% in 2025
  18. Kupp 11.6% in 2024, 11.5% in 2025
What will happen with Prescott's contract is unclear, currently he has last year in 2024 for 21.2% of cap. Burrow, Herbert, Goff have in 2024 last year of old contracts, their expensive contracts start in 2025.
Future salary cap may be higher than expected, so some projection of 22% in 2026, may end up being 20%. All these QB-starter contracts are taking significantly more cap than old contracts of HOFers and starters listed above. These new QB-contracts take as much salary cap as a QB-contract a decade ago + HOFer at another position.
Teams are adding void years, to artificially lower cap numbers of such contracts, creating "dead cap" at the end of contract. Saints and Eagles are masters of this.
List of recent "dead cap" after contracts for players that weren't on team anymore (i calculated this roughly to average total team cap of each season):

% of team salary cap was dead

  1. "dead Wilson" 20.8% of Broncos in 2024, 11.7% in 2025
  2. "dead Ryan" 19.2% of 2022 Falcons, 8% of 2023 Colts
  3. "dead Donald" 14.8% of 2025 Rams, 9.7% in 2024
  4. "dead Rodgers" 17.8% of 2023 Packers
  5. "dead Brady" 15.5% of 2023 Bucs
  6. "dead Osweiler" 15% in 2017 on Texans and Browns
  7. "dead Flacco" 8.5% of 2019 Ravens, 6.5% of 2020 Broncos
  8. "dead Goff" 13.5% of 2021 Rams
  9. "dead P. Manning" 13.3% of 2012 Colts
  10. "dead Luck" 9.9% of 2019 Colts and 3.2% in 2020
  11. "dead Wilson" 12.5% of 2022 Seahawks
  12. "dead Diggs" 12.2% of 2024 Bills
  13. "dead Julio Jones" 7.4% of 2022, and 4.2% of 2021 Falcons
  14. "dead Romo" 6.4% of 2017 Cowboys and 5% in 2018
  15. "dead Brees" 6.1% of Saints in 2021, 5.3% in 2022
  16. "dead Seymour" 11.1% of 2013 Raiders
  17. "dead Cousins" 11% of 2024 Vikings
  18. "dead Stafford" 10.4% of 2021 Lions
  19. "dead Tannehill" 9.9% of 2019 Dolphins
  20. "dead Foles" 9.4% of 2020 Jaguars
  21. "dead Bridgewater" 9.3% of 2021 Panthers
  22. "dead Hopkins" 9.3% of 2023 Cardinals
  23. "dead Steve Young" 7.2% of 49ers in 2001, 3.4% in 2000
  24. "dead Calvin Johnson" 8.4% of 2016 Lions
So teams are nowadays willing to have as large dead caps as any HOFers (except P. Manning on Colts) were taking on active contracts. Such huge dead caps are accumulating on contracts of Hurts, Prescott,... all because they have expensive contracts, teams are manipulating the cap, creating "dead cap". A decade ago only Raiders had this for Seymour, Palmer.
Notice that WRs Diggs and Julio Jones are here with huge dead caps although they never took more than 10% of cap on active contracts (first list above).
Record of highest % of team cap space ever belongs to "dead Wilson", not an actual player. The highest cap % in 1 year of Brady was for "dead Brady", not actual Brady.
Hopefully this can show how overpaid current QBs are: they take more cap % than in any previous era+leave "dead cap". This 15-25% of cap given to QB only works for MVP-level of play, carrying the offense year after year. There are 2-3 such players.
Career average % of team cap taken by QBs excluding their cheap first few seasons of rookie contracts, but including dead caps:
  1. P. Manning 13.9%
  2. Ryan 13.6%
  3. Stafford 13.3%
  4. Flacco (2013-2019 starter) 12.6%
  5. E. Manning 12.5%
  6. Roethlisberger 11.9%
  7. Brees 11.6%
  8. Rodgers 11.0%
  9. Favre 10.4%
  10. Brady 10.2%
Bledsoe on Patriots averaged about 12% after rookie contract, more than Brady on Patriots!
For comparison: Murray's contract starts in 2024 around 18% of cap, Burrow's contract starts in 2025 around 18% of cap. New contracts are huge.
Bonus list of

Combined 2 most expensive players on a team:

  1. 2022 Chiefs (Mahomes & Chris Jones) 30.9% of team cap
  2. 2003 Colts (P. Manning & M. Harrison) 30.8%
  3. 2024 Browns (Watson & Cooper) 30.2%
  4. 2023 Chiefs (Mahomes & Chris Jones) 29.2%
  5. 2024 Rams (Stafford & "dead Donald") 29.0%
  6. 2014 Lions (Suh & Stafford) 29.0%
  7. 2024 Broncos ("dead Wilson" & Bolles) 28.6%
  8. 2024 Giants (D. Jones & A. Thomas) 27.4%
  9. 2022 Titans (Tannehill & Dupree) 27.3%
  10. 2023 Packers ("dead Rodgers" & injured Bakhtiari) 27.2%
  11. 2021 Seahawks (Wilson & Wagner) 26.9%
  12. 2022 Falcons ("dead Ryan & Julio Jones") 26.6%
  13. 2008 Colts (P. Manning & M. Harrison) 26.4%
  14. 2023 Bucs ("dead Brady" & M. Evans) 26%
  15. 2024 Chiefs (Mahomes & Thuney) 25.4%
  16. 2024 Cardinals (Murray & Baker) 25.3%
  17. 2021 Rams ("dead Goff" & Stafford) 25.2%
  18. 2024 Bills ("dead Diggs" & Allen) 24.1%
  19. 2021 Packers (Rodgers & D. Adams) 24%
All recent teams, except for Colts and 2014 Lions. 2022 Falcons had about 26.6% of team cap dead. 2023 Packers got 1 game of Bakhtiari for 27.3% cap. 2024 Broncos will have Bolles. 2026 Lions will get on this list (Goff & Sewell).
Patriots paid the most in 2006 to Brady & Seymour, 22.5% of team cap. Brady & Moss combination was highest in 2009, 20% of team. What Chiefs are doing, winning Super Bowls with such high salaries shouldn't be possible.

2024.04.25 05:42 jl_weber Twas the night before Draft Day: A round up of mocks and rumors.

They're saying the 2024 draft is the most important in Broncos history. Of course, they've said that every draft since Manning. But this is the new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new, new most important draft.
Draft rumors, mock drafts, and all the reports we see leading up to the draft are mostly worthless, not only because nobody really knows what teams are thinking, but also because nobody knows which of these college players will actually be good NFL players. Yet, I follow all the twists and turns because I see this as entertainment and it's kinda fun. Y'all put up with a lot of my posting so I thought it might be a service to the subreddit to round where things stand the night before the draft.
UPDATE: Draft Morning Mocks!
Apologies! It's not letting me add links this morning for whatever reason.
Dane Brugler at The Athletic - Brock Bowers, TE at 12
USA Today's final mock - Dallas Turner, EDGE at 12
Field Yates final mock - Dallas Turner, EDGE at 12

Chris Collinsworth at PFF - Bo Nix, QB at 12
Peter Schrager at NFL Network - Bo Nix, QB at 12
Latest Mock Draft Selections (First Round Only)
These are the latest mocks from well-known sources and sites. Not an exhaustive list by any means, but enough to see some patterns. Nothing too surprising. Out of these 25 mock drafts:
Daniel "Move The Sticks" Jeremiah at NFL Network - Bo Nix, QB. Broncos trade with Philly to 22.
Bucky Brooks at NFL Network - Jared Verse, EDGE at 12
Charles Davis at NFL Network - Box Nix, QB at 12.
Kiper and Yates alternating picks at ESPN (note hasn't updated since 4/15) - Brock Bowers, TE at 12
Jordan Reid final mock at ESPN - Bo Nix, QB Broncos trade with Philly to 22.
Matt Miller at ESPN - Dallas Turner, EDGE at 12

The 33rd Team - Terrion Arnold, CB at 12
Nate Davis at USA Today - Bo Nix, QB at 12
Jason La Canfora at Washington Post - Bo Nix, QB. Broncos trade with Pitt to 20.
Connor Rogers at NBC Sports - JJ McCarty, QB. Broncos trade with Atlanta to 8.
Joel Klatt at Fox Sports - Box Nix, QB at 12.
Mike Klis (not a true mock draft) - Bo Nix at 12 or later.
Denver Post Roundtable - Michael Penix Jr. at 12 (Gabriel), Brock Bowers at 12 (McFadden), Nix or McCarthy (Renck), Laiatu Latu (Keeler)
Chris Tommasson at Denver Gazzette - Box Nix, QB at 12
SBNation Community Mock Draft - Bo Nix, QB at 12
Broncos relevant draft rumors
Again, none of this really means much, but I've tried to source this from actual reporters who are talking to agents and sources. I know a lot of stuff probably seems obvious (e.g. Denver is call teams above and below them!), but I'm just noting that people are saying these things.
The common takeaways here is that all the smoke around Denver and Bo Nix is real. Denver doesn't seem to want to stay at twelve. Everything hinges on what Pats do and they are likely to take a QB at this point.

2024.04.10 17:53 Sat0urn How to send your opponent to Russian purgatory: A quick guide

So I've been playing Cine2Nerdle Battles ever since Northernlion started doing them (RIP), and while I've seen a fair share of different strategies and traps over the course of these several months, the one area of international cinema that many of my opponents seem to neglect is Russian cinema. Being Russian myself, I have successfully sent my opponents to hell thanks to my knowledge so here I'd like to share some links to Russian movies that you can utilize and expand your horizons.
Option 1:
Perhaps the easiest way to link up to a Russian movie for me has been through Wanted (2008). Not only is it directed by Timur Bekmambetov, it also stars a prolific Russian actor Konstantin Khabenskiy, so whenever my opponent plays it against me, I immediately play Night Watch (2004) against them. If my opponent doesn't know Bekmambetov's other foreign productions (namely the Unfriended film series) and skips here, there's plenty of avenues to further send them down the rabbit hole - the most obvious one is Day Watch (2005), the sequel to the aforementioned movie that keeps the entirety of the original's cast; you can also play War (2002) which connects through Aleksey Chadov and opens up Aleksei Balabanov's filmography - there's the obvious Brother (1997) and Brother 2 (2000), but you can also set yourself up for an escape through Dead Man's Bluff (2005) that connects to Nobody (2021) which of course stars Bob Odenkirk; Chadov also stars in 9th Company (2005); and last but not least, you can go back in time via Academy Award-winner Moscow Does Not Believe In Tears (1980) and start building Soviet connections through here. There are of course other paths to take, but these are the ones I could remember off the top of my head. This is the one strategy I've been able to utilize the most.
Option 2:
Next in line is a trap I managed to play once, and it involves About Fate (2022), itself a Hollywood remake of the Soviet classic The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath! (1975). Even on its own About Fate is a great killshot for a 3X Emma Roberts or Thomas Mann, but if you want to go a step beyond, this director has several awful Russian comedies under his belt - two of them, Hitler's Kaput! (2008) and Love and the City (2009) appear in the dropdown. Fun fact - Love and the City stars current Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Option 3:
The last trap that I discovered naturally on my own while playing involves one of the numerous Nutcracker movies in the dropdown, specifically The Nutcracker: The Untold Story (2010). A Hollywood production of Andrey Konchalovsky, it boasts, among other talent, John Turturro, Elle Fanning and Nathan Lane, so it's fairly easy to get here. The one time I managed to 3X John Turturro someone with this movie they skipped me, so while listing Russian movies off the top of my head that could connect to the director, I found a link to another Academy Award-winner in Burnt By The Sun (1994) through its composer, Eduard Artemyev (I was promptly accused of cheating after that lol). Artemyev will also connect to several Andrey Tarkovsky pictures, namely Solaris, Mirror and Stalker, and Burnt By The Sun itself has 2 sequels, one of which - Burnt by the Sun 2: Exodus (2010) - is in the dropdown.
Other options:
A couple of recent starter movies have also been great starters for the Russian traps:
Other interesting connections include:
Finally, and it's a real shame that none of his movies appear in the dropdown, but Alexander Newsky, a notoriously bad Russian actor who produces his movies in Hollywood, can in theory be a link to many different actors:
Of course there are many many more different ways to get yourself into the Russian territory, and if you have your own, more obscure strategies and traps, feel free to suggest them in the comments. As mentioned before I've yet to see anyone play a Russian or even a Soviet movie against me in my odd 900 battles or so (Soviet movies are their own can of worms that I might open in a different post)
P.S.: also can someone tell me how to add a flair to my nickname on this subreddit? can't for the life of me find the option

2024.03.11 15:38 dimodsahpussydem The difference is I’m the drafting!

Since SB 50 Denver has the second lowest wins in the league with 52, only the Browns, and Commanders are worse with 51. KC is first with 97.
A big part is the drafting and resources that go into it. Here’s a look at the difference between Denver’s first and second round picks vs KCs. Along with the pick number.
Broncos first round picks last 10 years
‘23 Sean Payton (12) (employed)
‘22 Russell Wilson (5) (released with $85 million dead cap)
‘21 Patrick Surtain (9) (employed)
‘20 Jerry Jeudy (15) traded for a 5th and 6th round pick)
‘19 Noah Fant (20) (traded to Seattle in the RW trade)
‘18 Bradley Chubb (5) (traded to Miami the pick went to NO as part of Sean Payton trade)
‘17 Garrett Bolles (20) (employed)
‘16 Paxton Lynch (26) (out of the league)
‘15 Shane Ray (23) (practice squad playeout of the league)
‘14 Bradley Roby (31) (dropped by Denver)
Chiefs first round picks last 10 years
‘23 Felix Anudike-Uzomah (31) (1 ring)
‘22 Trent McDuffie (21) (2 rings)
‘21 Orlando Brown trade (31) (1 ring)
‘20 Clyde Edwards-Hellaire (32) (2 rings)
‘19 Frank Clark trade (29) 2 rings)
‘18 Patrick Mahomes trade (22) (3 rings)
‘17 Patrick Mahomes (27) traded with Buffalo at 10 (3 rings to the Bills 0 rings)
‘16 Traded to SF (28)
‘15 Marcus Peters (18) (0 rings with KC, 1 ring with LAR)
‘14 Dee Ford (23) (out of the league, and FUCK YOU for not lining up onsides)
Broncos second round picks last 10
Marvin Mims (63)
Nik Bonitto (64)
Javonte Williams(35)
KJHamler (46)
Dalton RisneDrew Lock (41/42)
Courtland Sutton (40)
Demarcus Walker (who?) (5-1)
Adam Gotsis (who?) (63)
Ty Sambraillo (who?) (59)
Cody Latimer (56)
Chiefs last 10
Rashee Rice (55)
Sky Moore/Bryan Cook (54/62)
Creed Humphrey/Nick Bolton (58/63)
Willie Gay (73)
Juan Thornhill (63)
Breeland Speaks (46)
Tanoh Kpassagnon (59)
Chris Jones (37)
Mitch Morse (49)
Pretty easy to see that our GM isn’t afraid to trade picks for players he likes. And also that he’s in a whole different stratosphere than Paton.
I hope Denver’s incompetence continues through the Mahomes era!

2024.02.26 22:36 funboy51 Free agents now and after next year…listed.

The point of this post is to show just how hard the next two years will be for our GM. All our GM can do is restructure, cut, trade or sign players. It’s easy to assume you can have a winning roster until you sit in his shoes for the next two years. Give it a shot. Who do you keep? This post also gives people who are not into all that is GM/cap etc. a sense of player contracts given position.
Below are the players who are currently unrestricted free agents. They can sign anywhere. Signing any of these guys will increase our current over the cap number which is currently over by 13 million. The $$ amount listed is their average annual salary while under their last contract.
Josey Jewell ILB $5,500,000 UFA
Wil Lutz K $4,050,000 UFA
Mike Purcell DE. $3,833,333 UFA
K'Waun Williams CB $2,600,000 UFA
Cameron Fleming T $2,350,000 UFA
P.J. Locke SS $1,400,000 UFA
Michael Burton FB $1,317,500 UFA
Fabian Moreau CB $1,300,000 UFA
Lloyd Cushenberry C $1,163,998 UFA
Adam Trautman TE $1,124,851 UFA
Jonathan Harris DT. $952,500 UFA
Justin Strnad LB $883,193 UFA
Quinn Bailey T $882,500 RFA
The below players are the players of interest (thinned down…not all are listed) who will be UFA after next year. These are all the large contracts save Russell Wilson…assumed cut. It assumes they are not traded, cut, restructured before the end of 2024. All listed are UFA save PS2
Garett Bolles Tackle $17,000,000
Justin Simmons Safety $15,250,000
Tim Patrick. WR $11,333,333
D.J. Jones DT $10,000,000
Patrick Surtain II CB. $5,240,657 club option
Jarrett Stidham QB. $5,000,000
Jerry Jeudy WR $3,798,244
Samaje Perine RB $3,750,000
Chris Manhertz TE $3,000,000
Tremon Smith CB $2,500,000
Javonte Williams RB $2,216,438
Quinn Meinerz G $1,196,463
Baron Browning LB $1,196,463
Caden Sterns S $952,647
Jonathon Cooper DE $895,168
In the next two years we need to clear cap space. We are 13 million over right now, still have to pay for the draft, and sign somebody to play the positions that are roster empty…like center, back up tackle, Kr etc.
Try to pick your keepers…then try to get under the cap. Good luck.

2024.02.14 00:15 KodiakKing23 (OC) Reviewing the Broncos Offensive Starters From 2023

Time for a long one. Let’s do this
QB: Russell Wilson/Jarrett Stidham
Russ seemed like he had rediscovered something over the first 4 games of the season. The comeback against Chicago was absolutely magical. That being said, it’s clear that he can’t play QB at a high level anymore. The year that really told us that was this past season, not 2022. I was willing to accept 2022 as an “off year” for Russell Wilson considering he, historically, had some of the best passing peripherals ever and I didn’t think he just lost his ability overnight. But that seems to ultimately be…what happened. Russ is a great leader, a great human, and I’m proud of the person he is as my QB, but everyone in Broncos Country should know by now that he’s not going to be the answer for our team. I don’t disagree with the process behind trading for him, but he is not going to ever be what we thought we were getting when we traded for him. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but that’s the reality of our situation. He wasn’t asked to do a whole lot after the Jets game. Sean Payton clearly did not trust him. But we turned our season around midway through the year. This was a result of some remarkably positive variance (including a historically great stretch of takeaways by our defense), but Russ was a part of it. He was making the throws he needed to (mainly to Sutton) and capitalizing in the red zone in crunch time when he was called upon to do so. At the same time, our Red Zone offense looked laughable at points. The RZ inconsistency has been maddening and something we’ve all been complaining about on gamedays for years. Something just didn’t click for Russ this past year drive-to-drive. His box score stats don’t actually look too bad, but this offense was extremely painful to watch for 90% of the year. The “can’t throw over the middle of the field” allegations are 100% true. Stidham came in and the offense looked relatively unchanged. He didn’t impress me that much. But the fact that we pay Stidham a fraction of what Russ makes and the offense looked the exact same is crazy. I love Russell Wilson the human, and I think we can all get behind him, but he clearly doesn’t have it anymore. I think we should move on this past offseason regardless of financial ramifications.
RB: Javonte/Perine/McLaughlin
The running game was comically inefficient. This is for a number of reasons. First things first, we only had 2 viable receiving weapons for most of the year (especially when Mims was still in development as a WR). In addition to Russ not being able to work the middle of the field, teams did not have to respect our pass attack one bit. This led to a catastrophically inefficient season for Javonte Williams. He was still recovering from one of the worst knee injuries in the modern era for a RB. Due to his lack of explosiveness, vision, and conditioning, this led to a BAD season from Javonte. It takes a while to get up to speed from a regular ACL tear, let alone one where you also ripped apart your MCL and PCL. He faced an average of 7.3 guys in the box this year on his runs, good for 5th(!) most in the entire league. I am not overtly concerned about his bad play this year. He was never a “speed guy” at RB anyway. He was a tackle breaking machine who was a capable receiver. Historical data says he will not be back to full strength until next year. However, I am a little surprised SP didn’t mix in more Perine/Jaleel in the run game itself.
Perine did awesome as our 2 minute drill specialist. Particularly against Buffalo and Minnesota, but he didn’t get as much usage in the actual run game as I would’ve liked to see. That being said, he filled in his role for us pretty well as a receiving/pass blocking back. He did allow a couple sacks, but I thought Perine was a sneaky important pickup for us last March in FA as a veteran to our thin RB room. I’m excited about him being a vet in our RB room for at least another year.
Jaleel McLaughlin was very exciting as a UDFA. Everytime he touched the ball, I was pretty confident in him making a play. He didn’t get a lot of work during our win streak because when teams load the box due to your lack of passing weapons, it’s a bad idea to put an undersized RB (5’8 190) in those kinds of positions. He still was Top 6 in the NFL in yards created per touch, so we clearly have something there, and us getting a real solution at QB will benefit McLaughlin greatly. Like Javonte and Perine, he is also a capable receiver. I hope Sean Payton can find additional ways to get him involved going forward, kid clearly has some juice.
WR:
Sutton was incredible this past year. Easily our best offensive player besides Meinerz. He had been relatively underwhelming the past 2 years coming off the ACL in 2021 and not being able to develop chemistry with Russ in Hackett’s god-awful offense last year, but it seemed like he had a return to form in 2023. We got back the Sutton we all fell in love with in 2019. He was making the big plays, the contested catches, and came up BIG for us in some moments against the Bills/Chiefs/Vikings. I credit him for a lot of the moments that looked like vintage Russ this past year. He seemed to fit the role of a “big bodied Tyler Lockett” deep ball specialist quite well. Sutton’s game has never been separation, and it is kind of difficult to funnel your passing offense through guys who don’t get open a ton. But I loved what I saw from him in 2023. Definitely one of the "heart and soul" guys in the locker room too.
Jeudy is a physically talented receiver and I expected big things out of him after ending the 2022 season white hot, but he just has not hit the stride in the NFL that a lot of us were expecting when we drafted him. I, like many of you, was super excited about him when we drafted him in 2020. But one thing is clear now: if he reaches the potential, it will not be here with the Broncos. He seemed like an incredible dude at Alabama and he was a hell of a player in CFB, so I don’t blame our regime for missing out on him. But the other part of this is that he is extremely overrated as a route runner. No matter what Twitter clips we’ve seen about him cooking DBs, his success rate vs zone is nothing to write home about. When he was used as an outside deep threat at the end of 2022, that’s when his best stretch as a pro came. He had a hamstring injury before the season began which I’m sure didn’t help, but it seemed to be minor considering he was back on the field relatively soon. He just has that attitude to him which makes me think he’s a lost cause, at least with us. His Twitter is wild and so was the bizzare Steve Smith fiasco on TNF.
Mims deserves to be mentioned here because he, all things considered, had a good and bad rookie year. Let’s start with the good: he helped our special teams turn from laughable to a strength. Pro Bowl and All-Pro kick returner. He flipped the field so many times in the Buffalo game returning kicks. The few deep balls he caught were things of beauty. He is dangerous with the ball in his hands. That being said, he was troubling as an actual WR and needs a lot of development. He ran a Go route on 42% of his sampled routes this year which is an absolutely absurd rate. I could just point to the fact that he was outsnapped/outtargeted by both Lil’Jordan Humphrey and Brandon Johnson when healthy. He, simply, did not have the faith of this coaching staff to win in the short/intermediate areas of the field. He had a 42% success rate vs man and 69% success rate vs zone. Those are historically bad numbers. I’m not trying to say he’s bad. And I don’t think we necessarily made the wrong pick even with the emergence of Dell/Downs who both were drafted behind him. He just is not ready to be an impactful, down to down, flanker NFL WR.
TE:
Dulcich’s injury absolutely killed this unit. Trautman did make some nice TD catches this year, but it’s clear he’s not an impact NFL TE. He was 50th/72 amongst TEs on PFF. His blocking wasn’t that great either. So if you’re an NFL TE who doesn’t block and doesn’t catch passes, what do you even do? He was never supposed to be the guy so I feel for him, but really struggled when he was called upon to be the TE1 for this offense. Manhertz was a much more capable blocker but basically a dead zero in the passing game. You basically just have to hope that Dulcich can recover from his bizzare injury relatively soon, otherwise this unit is easily one of the worst in the league. TE play is inconsistent throughout the NFL and week to week, but we did have Krull emerge and earn some snaps which was pretty neat.
OL:
Shoutout to Bolles for being a great human. I’m so sad that he’s an older player, because there’s a pretty solid chance he’s not with the team before we’re finally competitive. I don’t really see him as anything more than a league average tackle. He’s a pretty mixed bag. One game he’ll have Myles Garrett in a cage. Another game, he’ll be playing New England and be allowing untouched EDGE rushers all day. I love Bolles as a human, and he had some stretches this year of average play, but he’s nothing more than an average T. And that’s really all you need considering the state of OLs in the NFL. He’s been this sub’s whipping boy since his rookie year, and not to say it’s unjustified, but it’s really not that deep. He’s an average player who is a great leader and has a great game or 2 every season.
Mike McGlinchey is a different story. I am not really thrilled about this signing especially considering his cap hit/contract situation. He is going to get paid a lot of money to be a BAD player on our OL. Before someone says that his “run blocking” was great, there was nothing inspiring about an offense that ran for 3.9 yards per carry. His pass protection was actively bad. In 569 pass blocking snaps, 9 penalties, 6 sacks allowed, 8 hits allowed, and 49 pressures. That’s absolutely ridiculous especially for the comtract we gave him. Sean Payton is supposed to be an OL wizard considering his scheme has churned out some of the greatest OL of this generation when he was down in New Orleans (Nicks, Evans, Ramczyk), but I don’t know how anyone can unironically feel good about this player on our team. I remember the dark days of Elijah Wilkinson, Calvin Anderson, and Donald Stephenson. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like those days are over despite the embarrassing contract.
Ben Powers was a decent part of why our OL was vastly improved. He had a few disastrous games (allowing 7 hurries against Washington and 6 hurries against Buffalo), but overall, more very clean games more often than not. He hasn’t been terrible individually. He is a smart player, but his weakness is defending the bull rush. Overall, we could do better, but we could also do much worse. He’s just inconsistent for paying him a FA contract.
Meinerz is an absolute star, and one of our few bonafide stud NFL players. It just finally feels good to have some homegrown and developed talent on our offensive line again. He was PFF’s highest graded guard in the league this past year in run blocking. I hope we can find a way to keep him even being cap strapped over the next few years. He has turned into one of the game’s very best, and hopefully he only gets better as he ages. I know we all like to meme about “The Belly,” but he’s legitimately turned into a good player. The few times we were able to get our run game going, he was a big reason why.
I dont really know what to make of Cushenberry. On one hand, he graded out very well after having a remarkably disappointing NFL career for his first 3 years. I think the upgrade of Powers over Risner really did wonders for him. That being said, he had a sub 65 PFF run blocking grade in 10 games. And I have absolutely no idea where these all out blitzes came from and how they got to Russ so often. Did Cush fail to pick these up? Was the line not cohesive enough? For being Joe Burrow’s former signal caller at LSU, he finally hit the stride we all were hoping for. He refined his technique and stopped blatantly getting beat in one on ones. But I’m pretty confident we can move on. If they feel that Forsyth is ready after being the Captain at Oregon, I don’t see why or how we’d retain Cush. But I do need to acknowledge his improved play.

2024.02.08 15:36 mrpokergenius The Tank that could of been - is this better then where we are now

I want the Broncos to win Superbowls or at least have a chance at them. I believe most people on this sub have a bit a confusion about what a tank is. People act like they are intentionally going to lose or try to lose. Think of the scene from Moneyball where Brad Pitt traded a bunch of players that Art Howe the Oakland manager didn't want to play. They all still tried to win, but they had to do this with certain players that were still on the roster. The players aren't quitting and still tryng the hardest and Sean is trying to win.
I was rooting for the team to tank when the started 1-5. This year was going to be a great QB class at the top. Wilson was not the answer. We are in a position to grab one of the top QB's.
Here is what that tank could of looked like.
  1. Trade a wide receiver. Juedy or Sutton. Really didn't care which one. Prefered Jerry gone, but whoever can give us more and better picks. Jerry had and offer I believe it was a 3rd and a 5th. SOLD! Now what does this do ... it forces us to play Mims more. He is further on in his development for this year. He is almost certainly better then he is now, and better prepared for this year.
  2. Trade one of your stars or big name contracts. Bolles or Simmons. I much prefer keeping Bolles because that position is way more important for Wilson last year and whoever the QB is this year. They are both over 30 years old, both have a fifteen million plus cap hit. They are part of the past not the future. I believe we could of got a second or third round pick for them. Odds are very remote that either of these two players are ever on a Bronco team that wins a playoff game.
  3. Trade Josey Jewell. This is kind of my own take and didn't necessarily a lot of traction for this nationally. I would of accepted a 7th round pick. I don't see a single way that he is on the team this year. We could of got something. Most importantly though we would of got to see a lot more of Drew Sanders would of got a lot more playing time. This would of help both him and the Broncos a lot more. Most anti tank fans were against moves like this because well if you do that he might make a rookie mistake that could cost us to lose the Vikings game or something like that.
  4. I bench Wilson at that point. I had seen enough. If he was not willing to change his injury guarantee right then I'm going with Stidham. Bonus points one of two things happen. He wins as much as Wilson did and if so we have a competent QB and can potentially roll with Stidham this year as a semi proven commodity. The alternative is we lose and we could of had a top 3 QB this year. We could of got there natually by playing poorly. Remember we lost to the Patriots and Commanders who have second and third picks, we'd get the tiebreaker. The other thing is its a lot easier to trade up from the 4,5, or 6 picks to get to the top three then coming up from the 12th spot.
If we tank like this we almost have our salary cap solved to at least be even. Jerry is gone, Simmons or Bolles is gone (my two favorite Broncos). We know a lot more about Stidham as a QB, whether he can play or not. Our two youngest and most promising players Mims and Sanders would of had a lot more experience and better equiped to lead us forward.
The alternative is where we are now. Which one is better?
EDIT - I started typing this around 6 a.m. mostly because of got real stuff and things to do in life today. It won't let me go back and change the title. I wish I could of. It seems like that just makes me stupid and the rest is just hot garbage. LOL
Reminds me of this quote, If the law is against you, argue the facts. If the law and the facts are against you, pound the table and yell like hell .

2024 Cap Currently:
Negative $30 Million
Picks By Round:
1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th x2, 6th
Potential Cuts:
Bolles ($16 Million)
Simmons ($14.5 Million)
Sutton ($9.5 Million [$13.5 if after June 1])
Jones ($10 Million)
Patrick ($9.5 Million)
Stidham ($4.5 Million)
Potential Restructures:
Mike McGlinchey ($10.5 Million)
Zach Allen ($9.5 Million)
Ben Powers ($7 Million)
Courtland Sutton ($6 Million)
Alex Singleton ($2 Million)
Potential Extensions:
Garrett Bolles ($11.5 Million)
Zach Allen ($11 Million)
Mike McGlinchey ($11 Million)
Justin Simmons ($10.5 Million)
Courtland Sutton ($9.5 Million)
Jerry Jeudy ($9.5 Million)
Ben Powers ($8.5 Million)
DJ Jones ($6.5 Million)
Tim Patrick ($6.5 Million)
Russell Wilson Situation:
Cutting Wilson outright before March 18th would increase the total cap deficit for 2024 to Negative $80 million ($30 million we are currently in the hole plus the $50 million we are short of the $124 million we guaranteed him minimum over the life of the contract after his $35 million for 2024 and the $39 million we paid him already for 2022 and 2023).
If we cut Wilson after June 1st he would not add more to the 2024 Cap (his $35 million salary is already factored in) so that would still be Negative $30 million but would cost $55 million extra against the 2025 Cap. The reason this ends up being $5 million more than the $124 million minimum is because his 2025 salary also becomes guaranteed on March’s 18th.
Also of note there is matching language in the contract so that any amount Wilson signs for with another team will be reduced from our obligation this year.
Cut Options Simplified
Pay Wilson $85 million for 2024 ($50 million gets added to the 2024 cap so we get start free agency with negative $80 million and 2025 will be free of obligations) and we look for a new QB for next season
Pay Wilson $35 million in 2024 and $55 million in 2025 ($55 million added to 2025 cap so we start free agency with negative $30 million and 2025 will have $55 million in obligations) and we look for a new QB for next season
Pay Wilson $35 million in 2024 and $55 million in 2025 (so we start free agency with negative $30 million and 2025 will have $55 million in obligations) and Wilson plays for us next season.

2024.01.21 16:28 Welcome2Broncoland [Klis] For 2024, Broncos must fix the offense, already! The Broncos have failed to reach the NFL’s top 15 in total yards and points for nine consecutive seasons.

[Klis] For 2024, Broncos must fix the offense, already! The Broncos have failed to reach the NFL’s top 15 in total yards and points for nine consecutive seasons.
The average rank in total offense the past 9 seasons: 22nd. The average rank in scoring the past 9 years: 25th.
“I don’t know if you’d say, ‘Laid the foundation,’’’ Sean Payton said about his offense after his first year as head coach. “Were we as good as we expected or wanted to be offensively this year? Absolutely not. … I would say clearly heavy-duty work in progress. I would say we’re not building on that foundation yet; we’re still putting the pilings in based on what I saw.”
The Broncos had a $42.5 million quarterback in Russell Wilson and reportedly the second-highest paid NFL head coach in Payton and yet the Broncos averaged 26.7 yards less per game than they did in 2022 with Nathaniel Hackett directing the offense.
The Broncos paid $20 million for a right tackle. $14.5 million for a receiver, $15 million for a left guard and $14 million for a left tackle and yet their 2023 offense averaged 12 percent fewer yards than during the two-year Pat Shurmur era.
Some other notes from Klis:
For several reasons, Wilson will be moving on, the biggest of which is Payton doesn’t think he fits the offense he wants operated.
No. 2 quarterback Jarrett Stidham will return to compete for the starting job. As Stidham has just four NFL starts in five seasons, the Broncos could well add a free agent quarterback with starting experience on a discount (Ryan Tannehill, Sam Darnold, Jameis Winston) or use their No 12 overall draft selection on a quarterback (Bo Nix, Michael Penix Jr., J.J. McCarthy). Or both.
After entertaining the possibility of trading either Sutton or Jerry Jeudy last offseason, the Broncos are expected to move on from one this offseason.
Lloyd Cushenberry III was a four-year starting center but he is now a free agent. Is seventh-round rookie Alex Forsyth, who was inactive for all 17 games, ready to become a starting center in 2024?
The Broncos are expected to trigger right tackle Mike McGlinchey’s $17.5 million salary guarantee for 2025 by March 17.
For all the talk the Broncos will have to release high-priced veterans because of the dead-cap ramifications from Wilson’s contract, they could also extend players like Bolles that with the use of a signing bonuses would lower the cap hits.
Back-to-back injury-plagued seasons by the talented Greg Dulcich has been such a major disappointment, the Broncos have to make plans without him in 2024. If he can make it back healthy, great. A bonus. But just like the Broncos couldn’t rely on speedy, oft-injured receiver KJ Hamler last year, they must add a receiving threat at tight end for 2024.

2024.01.18 19:04 mdmcnally1213 Forget about the Draft.. Focus on Free Agency First

This team cannot enter this draft with 3 extreme needs at 3 significant positions, QB/WOT. At least 2 of the 3 need to be addressed in Free Agency. Considering this, who are the available Free Agents or trade targets at these positions? Disclosure: This is before team's ability to re-sign players or use the franchise tag as well as before teams cut players.
Starting with Free Agent QBs:
Free Agent WRs (not nearly a comprehensive list):
Free Agent OTs:
The first things that stands out to me is how deep the WR group is compared to the others and how old the OT group is. This QB group has a two guys I'd feel good about going into next few years as our starter (Cousins, Mayfield) and a few solid bridge options (Brissett, Minshew, Dobbs, Tannehill). A guy like Lock would be a shot that he still has room for improvement, but not someone I'd be happy as a locked in starter.
I don't see a single OT that I would be happy with going into next year as our starting LT. A guy like Jonah Williams is younger and has upside, Udoh and Nijman have stepped into starting LT roles due to injuries and played admirably, but they're all backup LTs right now, not starters. The rest of the group is 30 or older and I am aiming on getting younger.
Within these groups I prioritize QB and WR, but before I go into the guys I would target, who are some trade options? I'm not making any wild out of left field suggestions here, only guys who have been noted by media members as trade candidates across the league.
QBs:
WRs:
OTs:
So looking at this group, its either highly unlikely, likely to be overly expensive, or extremely underwhelming. Nothing that feels like both a realistic option and great option. So let's zero in on a few options here starting with the free agents.
I'm going to make a few assumptions pre-Free Agency here; Tee Higgins and Michael Pittman will get the franchise tag and be made available for trade but at a high price, Baker and Evans sign extensions with Tampa, and Russell Wilson is designated as a Post-June 1st cut. Kyler, while some say he could be traded will not be traded.
So it begins:
Starting with QBs, our team needs a complete re-vamped room, through both free agency AND the draft. With Baker off the table, and including trade options, there are 3 immediate starters available via FA or trade, Cousins, Wilson and Smith. My projection is that Kirk makes his way to Atlanta on a 3 year deal to join Bill and Josh McDaniels and Geno remains in Seattle. Russell Wilson is now the preeminent QB on the market. Coming off a fairly underrated season because his team didn't have the success they expected, I think he will come a an overall discount but still get a contract that matches what Kirk signs in Atlanta. I'm projecting us signing Russ to a 3 year $90 million dollar with $55 million guaranteed deal where year 3 has a minimal dead cap hit. I'm using Geno Smiths current contract (3 year $75 million $40 million guaranteed) as a baseline and just bumping it up.
I think we double dip at QB after parting ways with both Zappe and Mac, and bring Jacoby Brissett back on a 2 year $15 million contract, $5 million guaranteed.
Next, we need attack wide receiver group. The headliners (Higgins and Pittman) are going to require more draft capital that we are willing to part with, but I think we come away with a couple solid options. Calvin Ridley at 3 years $48 million $36 million guaranteed (using Tyler Locket contract as a baseline) and Tyler Boyd at 2 years $16 million $12 mil guaranteed (using Jacobi Meyers contract).
Finally at OT, there's nothing terribly appealing about this group, so I'm going to shoot for someone who will at least be ready to start week 1, but I may not be able to rely upon long term, Tyron Smith. He's 33 years old, so he's not ideal, but he's one of the best LTs of the last 10 years and can certainly help the group out in the film room and practice field while being more than a capable starter in 2024 at least, 2 years $24 million, $14 guaranteed, same AAV as his current contract with Duane Brown's age 35 contract strucutre.
Now let's see how we stack up from a cap perspective after these moves:
First year cap hits:
We are going into the offseason with $70,056,052 in cap space. After these moves, we're left with $36.556 million. We also need to worry about our internal FAs, prioritizing Dugger, Onwenu, Henry, Bourne while also keeping Bryant, Jennings and Pharaoh Brown.
So after all these moves, our roster has 65 players signed, and before any restructures or cuts has open cap space of $1,466,052, according to adding these exact cap hits to Spotrac's roster management tool. I would feel very confident our FO would be able to find additional cap space using restructures and cuts.
So we would head into the draft (before cuts/trades) with the following roster:
QB: Wilson, Brissett, Jones, Zappe
RB: Stevenson, Harris, Vaughn, Hasty
WR: Ridley, Boyd, Douglas, Bourne, Boutte, Juju, Parker, Thornton, Luther
TE: Henry, P Brown
LT: Smith, Anderson Lowe
RT: Onwenu, McDermott, Stueber
LG: Strange, Mafi
RG: Sow
C: Andrews, Andrews
S: Dugger, Peppers, Phillips, Schooler
CB: Gonzalez, Jackson, J. Jones, M. Jones, Wade, Wilson, Bryant, Bolden, Hern, Mills
ILB: Bentley, Tavai, Mapu, McMillan
OLB: Judon, Jennings, Board, Giles-Harris
DE: Wise, White, Bradley-King
DT: Godchaux, Barmore, Guy, Ekuale, Roberts, Hill, Pharms
I believe this opens up the flexibilty of this team come the draft, whether they want to still go QB at 3 and have the QB room to let him develop if he's not ready, or go MHJ to give the current QBs an incredible set of weapons to throw to, or even trade back to secure a LT in Alt or Fashanu while adding additional day 2 picks for shots at QB and WR.
There's so much variability in what can happen between now and the draft, and with the draft being stacked with WR and QB depth, it may make the free agency crop go a little slower, but we never know.

Hey all, does anyone know anything about these American Architecture reprints? Was told they were factory reprints of the magazines from the late 1800’s.
Planning to list them all for sale as a lot. I found some individual editions online for around $25 each, but none are selling. Hoping to find someone looking to buy all of them.

2024.01.11 02:08 social_distant_joe [Freeman] Hey y’all! I did a deep dive into the broncos financial situation these next few years and it’s really not as bad as some people make it seem. The Russ contract hurts a lot, but the thread below will show a path to creating a championship-caliber team by 2026.

[Freeman] Hey y’all! I did a deep dive into the broncos financial situation these next few years and it’s really not as bad as some people make it seem. The Russ contract hurts a lot, but the thread below will show a path to creating a championship-caliber team by 2026.
For starters, the Broncos will definitely use a post June 1 cut on Russell Wilson. This spreads his 85 million dead cap hit across 2 years, leading to a 2024 cap hit of 35 million and a 2025 cap hit of 50 million. Unfortunately, this creates zero additional cap space for 2024.
Currently, the Broncos are 20 million OVER the cap, meaning they need to free up that amount just to avoid facing penalties from the league. If they wish to actually make any moves this offseason they’ll need to free up even more.
In order to actually free up cap space, there are three easy cuts the Broncos can make that free up 25 million total: DJ Jones, Tim Patrick, Jarrett Stidham.
Payton supposedly loves Tim Patrick, so I would expect him to re-sign for the veteran minimum after being cut.
From there, the broncos can extend 2 other players (and potentially add void years to them) to create more 2024 cap space:
Courtland Sutton - 2 years 30 million (lowers 2024 cap hit by 8 million)
Garrett Bolles - 2 years 35 million (lowers 2024 cap hit by 10 million)
I think both of these moves make a ton of sense. Sutton is by far the best receiver on the team and had his best season since 2019. Bolles had a bounce back year and will provide the Broncos with stability at LT until they draft a replacement. And also, +18 mil in cap space.
From there, there’s two trade candidates that will free up cap space while also adding some draft capital to the Broncos. However, they are two fan favorites: Justin Simmons and Jerry Jeudy.
Trading Simmons wouldn’t be popular among fans, but he makes the most sense to trade for 3 reasons: 1. Finance - frees up 15 mil in cap space. 2. Trade Value - would net the biggest return outside of Surtain. 3. Positional value - safety production can be found for cheap in FA
Jeudy is a little less controversial, as he has disappointed during his time in Denver. Plus, his $12.9 million salary has zero dead money if he is traded, meaning the receiving team would take on his entire cap hit this year.
Not to mention, if the Broncos hope to re-tool their financial situation, it will be crucial for them to get as much draft capital as possible. Rookies are really cheap, and trading Justin Simmons and Jerry Jeudy could easily net you two top 100 picks in return.
All of these moves would take the Broncos cap space from -20 million to 51 million! From here, the team should be pretty quiet in free agency, as whatever they don’t spend this year will roll over into 2025. I’d spend maybe max 20-25 million on a new safety and some DL.
From here, I think the broncos have two options in the draft: 1. Trade the farm to get into the top 3 for a QB. 2. Trade back for more picks to fix the other holes on the roster.
As much as it sucks to punt on QB for a year, I would lean option 2. If you trade the farm (surtain + picks) for a QB this year then your roster is going to suck for a while. You run risk of being like the Panthers. Payton has proven he can win games with a vet like Jimmy G.
Meanwhile they can trade down in 2024 and get + contributors at positions of need like Edge, DL, TE, DB, and WR. They can also pick up a day 2-3 QB like Michael Pratt to compete with Jimmy G. Then, they can justify trading the farm for a 2025 QB like Shedeur Sanders.
In 2025, they’d be in great shape financially. They could easily afford to give Surtain and Meinerz extensions, while also having the flexibility to re-sign Browning, Cooper, Javonte, and Sterns if they’d like.
This plan would set them up to go all-in for a championship in 2026, as they’d have a roster full of young players and 70+ million in cap space going into Shedeur Sanders’s (or whichever QB they go after) 2nd year. By then, the Russ contract will be fully in the past.

Taking it on the Chin. The Path Forward with One Year of Dead Money.
The following analysis was completed using Sportrac’s ‘NFL Team Roster & Salary Cap Manager’ and Over the Cap’s ‘Salary Cap Calculator’ tools. All numbers are provided by Sportrac and OTC.
According to Sportrac the Denver Broncos 2024 Salary Cap Totals are as follows:
Total Available Cap: $240,500,000
Total Team Cap: $261,423,984
Cap Space: $-20,923,984
Cutting Russell Wilson with a standard designation would result in a one-year dead cap charge of $85,000,000. Since his cap number was already going to be $35,400,000 this represents a ‘cap savings’ of $-49,600,000. Factoring in the release of Russell Wilson yields:
Cap Space: $-70,523,984
To get back under the cap, the following moves would need to be/could be made:
CUT:
Tim Patrick: $10,000,000 savings
DJ Jones: $10,000,000 savings
TRADE:
Jerry Jeudy: $12,987,000 savings
ADJUSTED CAP SPACE $-37,536,984
This is where it gets tricky because now, we must deal with contract restructures. Generally, it is best to minimize restructures due to dead cap implications and tying yourself to the restructured player.
RESTUCTURE CANDIDATES:
Zach Allen: $9,416,667 savings
Remaining years: 2 years and a void year
Additional Dead Cap: $3,138,889 per year
Mike McGlinchey: $11,100,000 savings
Remaining years: 4 years
Additional Dead Cap: $2,775,000 per year
Courtland Sutton: $8,416,667 savings
Remaining years: 2 years
Additional Dead Cap: $4,208,333.50 per year
Ben Powers: $8,156,250 savings
Remaining years: 3 years
Additional Dead Cap: $2,718,750 per year
Alex Singleton: $3,420,000 savings
Remaining years: 2 years
Additional Dead Cap: $1,710,000 per year
ADJUSTED CAP SPACE: $2,972,600
With two cuts, one trade, and 5 restructures, the Broncos would be back in the black with their 2024 salary cap. This is not enough money to fill out the roster, however, so more needs to be done. The next move would be extensions. This is the most difficult piece to project because extensions are negotiations and it’s hard to say how much the extensions would end up being. For now, lets ignore the contract and just try to work through the impact these extensions would have on the 2024 cap by converting salary to signing bonus.
EXTENSION CANDIDATES:
Garrett Bolles:
Extension: 2 years
2024 Salary Converted to Signing Bonus: $14,000,000
2024 Cap Savings: $9,333,334
Justin Simmons:
Extension: 2 years
2024 Salary Converted to Signing Bonus: $13,000,000
2024 Cap Savings: $8,666,667
ADJUSTED CAP SPACE: $20,972,601
So now we have some cap space. The question remains, is it enough to build out the roster?
According to OTC, the Denver Broncos 2024 Draft picks will count approximately $3,495,556 against the cap.
CAP SPACE AFTER DRAFT: $17,477,045
The Broncos currently have 44/53 players under contract for the 2024 season. Factoring in the cuts (3) and the trade (1) the Broncos need to sign 13 players prior to the start of the season. The draft picks will account for 6 of these players leaving 7 players remaining with $17,477,045 to do it. Many of them would be bargain bin free agents, which shouldn’t be a problem as 2024 would be viewed as a rebuilding year and not a year we are trying to be overly competitive. We could also gain additional flexibility based on the duration of the extensions.
RAMIFICATIONS:
Taking the entirety of the Dead Cap hit in one season would likely mean we would be unable to re-sign Cushenberry although it wouldn’t be impossible. According to Sports Illustrated, he is projected to earn a 4-year contract worth $57 million or an AAV of $14.25 million. It would be possible to sign him to a highly backloaded deal but that is always a risky proposition. He is 26 years old, meaning he will be 30 by the end of his next contract and we don’t know how his skills will deteriorate. A backloaded deal also requires that he WANTS to be a Denver Bronco and we don’t know the true answer to that either.
Dead Money is also going to be an issue, especially with the number of restructured contracts and contract extensions. Below are the updated Dead Money projections for all the restructured and extended players:
https://preview.redd.it/uixks3xrqa9c1.png?width=542&format=png&auto=webp&s=46573264bd05ecb1d2b542e5cf7db05ed58cd6b0
As you can see, the moves required to get under the cap for 2024 would likely tie us to the restructured and extended players for the remainder of their contracts. All these players would be around in 2024 so the ‘Potential Dead Cap’ for 2024 is irrelevant. Most of the players would also be back for 2025 although you could cut one or several of the players without incurring too much dead cap. Allen, McGlinchey, and to a lesser extent Powers are the only players that really present any problems.
BENEFITS AND CONCLUSION:
The benefit to taking a 1-year dead cap charge on Russell Wilson is that it would likely limit us to only one significant rebuilding year and would greatly open opportunities for the future. After eliminating Russel Wilson’s contract from the books and accounting for the restructures as well as the bonuses for Bolles and Simmons, the Denver Broncos would have the following cap space available:
2025: $129,704,406 with 22 players under contract.
Note: This does not account for the value of whatever contracts Bolles and Simmons might agree to.
2026: $203,851,617 with 9 players under contract.
Smart use of future available cap space as well as several smart drafts are going to be critical in rebuilding the Broncos and opening a championship window. The intent of this analysis is to show that while it would hurt, I mean really hurt, taking a one-year dead cap charge is not impossible. On the one hand it even makes sense to do so. Ultimately though we are not in charge and have no say in what the Broncos are going to do. Taking a two-year cap charge would result in a little more flexibility but it would ultimately drag out the rebuilding process. Personally, I would like to move on from this situation as quickly as possible but if two years works out better then I’ll survive. I’m a Broncos fan no matter what. Thank you for reading!

2023.12.18 19:21 notorious_p_a_b Things keeping me up at night. Figuratively not literally.

So many holes. So many problems. So many questions. I don’t even know if I have the wear withal to write them all out.
I don’t even know what to do about Russ. I’ve supported him all season but it’s obvious he has a ceiling. I’m not sure if the situation improves next year because he’ll be another year older and another year less athletic. Hard to move on from him though because of money and the inability to replace his production. Can’t really draft a QB this year because we’d either have to reach in the middle of the 1st or try to find a project in the 3rd. Neither inspires confidence. Especially when we have so many holes.
Jeudy needs to be traded but can Mims be the #2? Who moves into Mims’s position on the depth chart if he moves up?
Sutton will turn 29 next season.
Tim Patrick is going to get cut and we’ve already been living with his backups in Lil Jordan Humphrey and Brandon Johnson.
Our TE group is terrible.
Bolles will be restructured/extended, traded, or cut. If he goes his replacement will be Cam Fleming but he’s a free agent so we don’t even have an in house replacement. Can’t say a cheap LT, which is all we can afford, would inspire much confidence. If he stays he’ll be 32 next season. Awesome.
Cush is probably gone due to the salary cap but who will replace him? Luke Wattenberg or Alex Forsyth? Doesn’t really inspire confidence.
Will Ben Powers elevate his play?
What are we to do with McGlinchey?
Will Javonte recover some of his burst with additional recovery time?
What do we do with DJ Jones? He’s a cut candidate due to his play and our salary cap but who replaces him? Purcell is a free agent and isn’t very good. Uwazurike? I doubt it. Maybe be get lucky and get Jer’zhan Newton in the draft but I think he projects more as an LDE due to his size (less than 300 lbs). We’d be playing an undersized NT and it would force us to keep Jonathan Harris (who is a free agent) or someone similar at LDE.
LDE is our weakest spot on the D-Line. Harris is a free agent and his replacement is Matt Henningsen. Maybe we can draft Newton and play him at LDE which means we have to keep Jones which impacts our cap space. Awesome.
What do we do with Josey Jewell? Can Drew Sanders be the guy?
Moreau is a free agent. Is Riley Moss ever going to play himself into the rotation?
PJ Locke is a free agent. Can JL Skinner earn himself any playing time?
Can we extend Justin Simmons and restructure the final year of his contract? Also, Simmons will turn 31 next season. Awesome.
How do we improve our pass rush? Bonitto, Cooper, and Browning don’t really strike fear into their opponents. The best pass rushers will probably be gone by the time we pick in the draft. This means we’d have to take a flyer on another mid to late round jag or reach for a Chop Robinson or Bralen Trice.
Meinerz extension is looming.
PS2 extension is looming.
We only have 6 draft picks this year and no 2nd rounder. Not having a 2nd rounder is really going to hurt. 1, 3, 4, 5, 5, 7 is all we have.
Salary cap is a mess. Currently -$17,198,257 in salary cap space with only 43 of 53 players under contract next season. Not only do we need to sign 10 players, but we need to replace anyone who is cut so really it’s more like 12-13 players that need to be signed. I suppose six of them will be draft picks but that still leaves 6-7+ spaces to fill.
Our roster is going to restructure city. Wilson, Sutton, Allen, McGlinchey, and Powers are all restructure candidates but we need them to play ball. Can we restructure everyone we need to without putting ourselves in Dead Money hell the next few seasons? Keep in mind that if you restructure you are basically tying yourself to that player for the remainder of their contract due to the aforementioned dead cap implications. That’s Wilson-5 years, Sutton-2 years, Allen-3 years, McGlinchey-4 years, and Powers-3 years. The Broncos currently have $10,920,344 in dead money on the books in 2024 which is 7th most in the league.
These are most if not all of the concerns I have for the future of the Broncos. I’m sorry to say it but idk how you can deal with everything I listed out and improve as a team. I’m obviously happy about our success this season but it feels like the next few seasons could be pretty rough for us. We also have to wonder if we’ll be getting a new GM or if it’s going to be George Paton who tries to dig us out of this mess. So many questions friends. Not trying to be a doomer, I just think we have an uphill climb ahead of us.

2023.12.12 18:55 Antiumbra A Way-Too-Early Look at the Offseason/Cap

As of right now, assuming a salary cap of $242mil, the Broncos are estimated to be over the 2024 salary cap by just a hair over $17mil.
2024 Free Agents:
Obviously some of those we will want to re-sign if possible, but for cap purposes we will ignore them for now.

Dead Money so far we have:
Nothing we can do about this here.

Notable large cap hits in 2024:
Some players you aren't going to be able to do much, for example:

Possible options to get under:
These 5 moves alone gets the Broncos under the cap by about $13 mil. Enough to sign the draft picks, but if we want more, there are some tougher decisions:

What are all of your thoughts? What moves would you like to make?
