Hello,
I've been sparsely employed for two years after receiving my Master's degree in psychological research in May 2022 - my target goal, short term, is a receptionist job and my long-term goal is any sort of research position the government, industry, or academic sector. I also have a goal of trying to learn Python and SQL as I've seen a lot of jobs require these.
I haven't been able to find anything research related for since graduating - I've gotten really close a number of times, I was getting three to six interviews a week from January to June 2023, then it felt like something happened and the river ran dry - perhaps because I was entering into over a year since graduating.
I've been a nanny-tutor for family-friends to keep afloat. I've lurked and asked on various Reddit job boards for advice and it's always the same - remove my Master's (or even BA) to take anything- but, I never really get an answer on how to change up my experience since all of it is in/revolving around academia; how do I lie about where I gained my skill-set? I feel like my employment gap would be even largesuspicious without it.
I'm aware a lot of people will say - well just pretend you've been a nanny/tutor your whole adult life just so you can get ANY full-time/part time job that's not freelance/gig to break this horrid streak and while that's valid, that's not my concern - my concern is that I think it'd be more beneficial if my "for now" job allowed me to gain some relevant skills and experience to later help me break into one of those jobs I'd like to be doing. A receptionist job is a great example, I think, and is my short-term goal - so at the very least I can get health benefits and also gain/maintain some more office management skills - and also network! My network is really lacking as many of my connections are people who have spent their whole lives in academia as professors. I reach out as often as I can to other former students and they've been kind, but not really helpful in referring me.
Basically, looking for "how can I hide my Master's (and possibly BA) when all my employment corresponds to it" as well as general resume advice. Sharing my most general resume, but I also have a CV with more information/other resumes with less information.

Preface

I’ve been spending way too much time responding to individual comments recently, so I decided to put all my thoughts into one post.
I’ll start by getting it out of the way that I’m not a racist or sexist. I’m a Japanese American man who happens to think Adewale and Aveline are among the coolest protagonists in AC and has no issues with an African, Indian, Korean, etc. protagonist, man or woman, in any setting where they make sense. (More on the making sense part later.)
Kassandra is also one of my favorites, but while she and Eivor were better than nothing, they were both essentially just female skins. Their stories should’ve acknowledged their gender in some way imo, and I’ve argued way more than I should’ve with people who pulled the historical accuracy card on them.
I agree that some of the people who complain about Yasuke sound like racists, but I think you can legitimately object to his being a co-star without racism being involved. (I’m also slowly coming around to accepting Yasuke.)
I also realize that I shouldn’t judge the game too harshly yet, as it hasn’t been released yet... But we do have the trailer.
With that out of the way, as an Asian male and longtime fan of the series, I’m disappointed that they squandered the perfect opportunity to have a positive/cool depiction of a Japanese male in the Japanese and first East Asian entry in one of the most popular series in the world given the decades-long history of western media’s marginalizing and demeaning Asian men. I mention AC’s popularity to point out the potential it has to positively influence a wide audience.
I'll respond to most of justifications I've seen for Yasuke as a protagonist in an AC game set in Japan one by one for easier reading.

“Yasuke is a better audience surrogate...”

This is a weak excuse. No one has ever complained about this, because the series has always had the perfect surrogate in the form of the modern-day protagonist.
And let’s face it, an info dump is an info dump. No one wants to hear extended explanations on the finer points of Japanese society, no matter who it’s conveyed to. The database can handle the deeper stuff, and any info necessary for the player could’ve just as easily been explained to a slightly unaccustomed Japanese rookie samurai.
“Better audience surrogate” is a solution to a problem that didn’t exist.

"But Naoe is Japanese...”

This justification falls flat on me, because the problems have always been different between Asian men and woman in western media. Portrayals of Asian women used to focus on exotic sexualization, but because of that, they got comparatively more screen-time than their male counterparts.
The Naoe defense also ignores that fact that we could've had both a Japanese female AND male protagonist if Ubisoft followed their most recent 4-game (if you count Origins) track record of male and female protagonists that are both of their setting. It just doesn’t sit right with me that they decided to change this formula among others with the first East Asian setting.

“But people didn’t complain about Nioh’s white protag...”

This accusation falls flat on me too, because Nioh is not a good comparison. It’s a straight-up fantasy game that focuses exclusively on fighting supernatural enemies. It doesn’t pretend to have an ounce of historical accuracy or realism.
It was also made by a Japanese company that has a track record of including Japanese protagonists. That track record gives them some leeway to change things up without being accused of whitewashing Asian characters.

"But Yasuke is a real part of Japan's history..."

He's a footnote in Japan's history. If we're being honest, the only reason we even know about him is because he was black in a time when there were almost no black people and was a retainer for Nobunaga. Nothing in his historical record mentions him doing anything else of much significance, most likely because there was very little he could do in his position. It's not racist to acknowledge this.
Again, as a longtime Japanese American fan of the series, I'm happy that AC Japan is finally here but disappointed that Ubi decided to inflate a small part of "Japan's" history and slap him on the cover as one of its representatives. I would feel the same (worse actually) if it was William Adams there.
I'd also feel the same if a hypothetical white protagonist who was a footnote in an African nation's history took the place of a fictional African protagonist. I think most people would feel the same too, and the uproar would surely be greater.

"But Yasuke WAS an actual samurai..."

I think the debate about whether he was or wasn't a "samurai" is largely irrelevant and completely misses the point. I agree that he was a "samurai," but historical records also make it sound like he was Nobunaga's favored trophy pet (if we're being completely honest). (The preceding sentence got me permanently banned for "racism" on the main AC subreddit, but I don't think it's racist to acknowledge racism, even the overt form it took in the past.) It's entirely possible (and likely) that he was made an honorary "samurai" for that reason alone. Because "samurai" is technically just a title and privileged position.
The real question is, "Did Yasuke fit the classic image of a badass armored warrior or robed ronin most people imagine (and that appeared in the trailer) when they think 'samurai'?"
The Japanese (especially in the past) actually use a different word when they're being specific about warriors fitting that image, and it's "bushi" (as in "bushido" or "way of the warrior"). That word is conspicuously missing from Yasuke's historical record. There's probably a reason for that.

"But Yasuke's story deserves to be told..."

Similar to the badass warrior aspect, nothing in the historical record specifically mentions that he learned the language or integrated into the culture particularly well, so any portrayal of that sort is wishful appropriation at best imo.
At that point, are you really telling his story? Is there value in promoting fanciful conjecture that is based on essentially nothing? Obviously, there’s a monetary incentive for Ubi to capitalize on the popular trend of farfetched depictions of Yasuke, but is that it?
It’s a given that the real Yasuke probably lived a fascinating life, but Ubi will likely gloss over the actual struggles he faced as a complete outsider in a frankly very racist time and place. It almost seems disrespectful to attribute all sorts of things that probably weren’t true just to spice things up for a video game. (And yes, I think Ubi should've included at least some examples of the struggles Kassandra and Eivor would've surely faced, but at least they were made up people.)

“Go play Ghost of Tsushima...”

These people are probably the worst. Honestly, I think Ubi is also guilty of agreeing with the underlying sentiment in this line of thinking. Contrary to others, I think Yasuke was less of a “woke” diversity decision and more of a “GoT already did a Japanese guy” decision.
I think that borders on racism when you consider that that’s never a concern when it’s the umpteenth white protagonist in a medieval European setting (or any setting). It implies that Asian characters are just too similar to each other to be marketable too close to each other.
But they’re only similar to each other in western-made media because western writers cling to tired tropes like honor and stoicism. The perpetuation of such stereotypes has an impact. I’ve seen people here claim that it’s a fact that Japanese people are uniquely less capable of resisting societal constrictions, hence the choice of Yasuke.
Another implied that historical codes of honor are things that most Japanese people still live by. They’re not, and that person obviously doesn’t know too many Japanese people and probably got their misconception from one-sided media portrayals.
Just like the codes of chivalry for European knights, the codes of Japanese honor were simply the ideals of the people that wrote them, who were themselves just a small subset of their population. It’s impossible to think that all or even most of the people back then actually abided by them, samurai or not.
And I'm a fan of the AC series. I'm not interested in playing GoT.

Historical accuracy vs believability

While there are definitely significant historical accuracy issues with that portrayal of Yasuke, they’re comparatively minor next to the replacement issue in my mind. Historical accuracy is really only an issue for me in the context of a more general believability issue.
Why would anyone, Assassin or Templar, choose the only black person in Japan as their secret agent in the field? Firsthand accounts describe crowds of onlookers offering money to catch a glimpse of him wherever he went.
An extremely-conspicuous total-outsider is simply the least ideal protagonist in a series about remaining inconspicuous while murdering dozens of people. Previous protagonists could fully navigate their environments because they were a part of them. Knowing their lands, languages, peoples, and cultures and fitting in with them, I can believe that they successfully moved through them while keeping their actions (and names) hidden from the pages of history.
I can even buy that Kassandra and Eivor existed despite “historical accuracy.” Because half the population of any group of people is women, the two could conceivably blend in and be forgotten imo, especially when you consider that they also lived MUCH further back in time. There's much more we don't know about that far back in history.
This might be another thing that's falsely construed as racist, but it's a fact that local populations don't take kindly to singularly-unique foreign outsiders cutting down their friends and loved ones, regardless of who their boss is. Yasuke would’ve been (in)famous and lived on in legends told for generations, even if the Templars tried to erase his historical record. He would've surely been seen and positively identified as Nobunaga’s famous black samurai by hundreds of witnesses as he did all the things the non-stealthy one of the two protagonists does.

“But Leonardo da Vinci didn’t actually help assassins build a hidden blade either...”

The central conceit of the AC series has always been playing with the idea of secret organizations, conspiracies, ancient beings, and sci-fi artifacts being involved with figures and events within the blank spaces of history. Yes, Yasuke’s blanks are big, but again, they wouldn’t be big if he was doing the things we saw in the trailer.
Any believability issues that previous AC games had are multiplied tenfold by Yasuke being a combination of real, black, and not an NPC in Sengoku Japan. It’s a substantial layer of unbelievability added on top of a base that already existed in previous games that did in fact claim some semblance of believability. Yasuke is just on another level, and while I think it’s fine to enjoy him in Shadows as pure fantasy, let’s not pretend he makes any sense. Which brings me to my main issue...

Representation and the replacement issue

Considering the nonsensical nature of Yasuke as a protagonist, it makes his taking the spot as the series’ first Asian male lead in a mainline game all the more off-putting to me. In the best-case scenario, Ubi is simply trying to capitalize on the popular cool black samurai trend as I mentioned. But they’re still doing it at the expense of an Asian male lead.
I admit that western media has gotten a lot better at representation, but it’s still a fairly recent thing and there’s still a long way to go. A recent hot-take of an IGN article made at least one correct claim that Asian representation shouldn’t be confined to ninjas and samurai.
But the solution to the problem isn’t to take away some of the only positive but one-sided representations we have. The solution is to broaden Asian representation to portray them as ordinary people with diverse appearances and personalities in all walks of life. Until that becomes a norm, Asians should be allowed to star as ninjas, samurai, kung fu masters, etc. as long as the depictions aren’t negative caricatures. In fact, they can be gateways to diversifying their portrayals.
If Ubi really wanted to differentiate itself from GoT’s Jin, they could’ve just given Shadows’ samurai a completely different personality instead of lazily changing his race. It’s about time a western dev broke away from the tired stoic warrior trope. "But this is Ubisoft... They're incapable of nuanced portrayals of minorities..." That's cop-out excuse imo.
No one game can reverse decades of marginalization and negative stereotypes, but individual movies, shows, public discourses, and yes, video games make up the collective whole of media, which has a massive impact on perceptions within a society. I believe individual representations make a difference, so I support increased diversity in every piece of media as long as it’s not at the expense of good writing and not at the expense of opportunities for other marginalized groups.

Conclusion

If you read everything this far, thank you. Again, I realize that the game isn’t even out yet and that I may be proven spectacularly wrong somehow. Either way, I can now focus my ire on the excessive monetization and live service BS that Shadows and the Infinity hub will surely have, and you all should too :) Or maybe I'll just touch grass.

Hey folks!
I suddenly can't connect to Home Assistant from the HA Companion App through the local network. I'm running out of relevant troubleshooting threads to follow so it's time to ask for help.
It feels like it might be a certificate issue, but I'm not smart enough to tell for sure or know what to do to fix it. I'm might be related to this Cloudflare announcement about Let's Encrypt certificate changes?
Here's what works, and what doesn't:

Network info

I have remote access using Cloudflare, Let's Encrypt, and my custom domain, set up by following the Secure Home Assistant Remote Access guide. This set up has been stable for over a year with no connection issues for either phone, local or remote.

What changed?

I recently updated Home Assistant Core to 2024.5.4.
Immediately afterward, I lost normal access to HA from my phone's Companion App. Instead, I get the Unable to connect to Home Assistant message then, eventually, the Settings/Refresh External URL/Wait prompt.
I restored a backup of Home Assistant 2024.5.3 (and others going back to 2024.3.3), but my phone still can't connect.

Attempted fixes

• Rebooted the phone
• Uninstalled and reinstalled the Companion App numerous times, in combination with clearing the app storage/cache data before and after
• Checked that time and date are correct on the problem phone
• Tried adding an Internal URL in the Companion App (https://ha.mydomain.com and https://ha.mydomain.com:8123); this is blank on the second phone, which works as expected
• Checked that the Let's Encrypt Root CAs (ISGR Root X1 and ISGR Root X2) are installed and active on the phone

Any other ideas?

Let me tell you about the wildest day ever with my cat, Mr. Whiskers. It was a regular Thursday morning, and I noticed he was missing. He's usually all over me for breakfast, so his absence was weird. I left the back door open, hoping he'd wander back, and went to work.
By lunchtime, my phone was blowing up with notifications from our neighborhood Facebook group. I opened it to see tons of posts about Mr. Whiskers. He had made his way to the local elementary school and wandered into a classroom during a math test!
There were videos of him strolling across desks, sniffing pencils, and batting at erasers. The kids were going nuts, laughing and trying to pet him. The teacher, clearly a cat lover, eventually gave in and let the kids have an impromptu "Meet Mr. Whiskers" session. He even curled up on her desk like he owned the place.
By the end of the day, Mr. Whiskers was a local celebrity. The videos were everywhere, and he was officially an honorary student, complete with a paper hat and certificate. When I got home, there he was, lounging on the porch like nothing happened.
The school principal called the next day, half-jokingly offering him a permanent mascot position. While we declined, we agreed he could visit for therapy sessions with the kids.
Now, Mr. Whiskers has a regular gig at the school, bringing joy and laughter to everyone. Who knew one lazy cat could become a local legend in just 24 hours?

Changing to hybrid graphics mode would allow display to load normally on the igpu and hdr works fine, but with hdr certification missing. Clean installing windows in dgpu mode works until i install nvidia drivers, i would hear the usb detached notification sound during the installation and screen would go blank again, and its the same on all older nvidia driver versions. Any thoughts?

in sec sch I had this physics teacher omg he's like quite nice and kind and stuff uk like he doesn't scold us and shit 😋 sounds nice right? so is he a good teacher? NO 😟 homeboy doesn't know how to teach at all. hear me out. we gave him chances ok like for the whole of sec 3 we told ourselves ok maybe he'll change in sec 4. he did not change. here's some things he did.

1. he does not assign and collect hw. every other chers in other classes assign hw he simply just throw us the hw and doesn't tell us to submit so nobody do because dn submit (OK I KNOW THATS KINDA OUR FAULT) but like if he assigned it we would be done it
   
2. he does not mark our work. he doesn't mark our work unless he's forced to (for e.g. when the HOD specially assign him to or when HOD wants to check hw submission rate). EVEN WHEN HE DOES MARK, HE MARKS ONLY THE FIRST PAGE LIKE WTFFFFFFF 💩💩💩 bro collects the work and keeps it in his office to collect dust and returns us 3 MONTHS LATER for him to just MARK THE FIRST PAGE AND PUT A "SEEN" ON THE TOP LIKE UGH
   
3. he's doesn't know how to control the class. we could just be talking talking and talking and he won't even do anything he just continues teaching like nothing's happening like he doesn't even try atp
   
4. he teaches the wrong things sometimes. he could be teaching smth and we realise nothing is making sense so we will point out to him and he will always be like "ehh?? oh... i will clarify with the HOD" LIKE WHATTTTTT??!?!?!??!? sometimes I wonder if he bought his teaching certificate from shopee.
   
5. he does not know how to do physics. how ironic. lemme give one example. one day he decided to go thru an O level mcq paper. he said he's only gna go thru the hard and tricky qns but he ended up going thru all 40?? and he took 10min to go thru 1qn??? ok that's not the point anyways he got to one qn and he literally got stunned. like he didn't know how to do the qn. he stood there staring at the qn blankly for 30min straight like a freeze frame. like idk if hes reliving his 2016 mannequin challenge era but he got stuck at a 1 mark mcq qn for 30min straight and after that he straight up told us "idk how do". this happened more than once btw. when going thru notes with us he need fill in the blanks HE ALSO DK HOW TO FILL he needed to refer to the answer sheet. he have to ask us how to do because he say he got a "brain lag" like ok understandable but like sir I don't think normal ppl get brain lags and have to ask his students to do the qn for him like 2 times per week.
   

srsly idk how he didn't realise he was not doing good after the continuous and persistent problem of more than half the class failing all the physics tests and exams. not like we didn't tell him. we did. he promised that he will change. he didn't. we made complaints about him to the department 3 times already. he kinda got "demoted" after we left the sch but not fired. in the end only 3 ppl from his class got A1 for physics in O levels while other classes had at least like 15.
now im in jc and the cycle continues. atp I think I just have no fate with good phys chers. at least this one is slightly better now. manifest a good physics teacher to appear in my life pls. it's always the other class physics teachers who are good.

My friend, Mark (M18), has recently been having a lot of relationship troubles with his girlfriend, Leah (F18). They got together back in February of this year (when we were still in high school), and their relationship has become a complete train wreck. Mark was (and still is) head over heels for Leah; he has told me and my other friends that she is “definitely the one” and that he eventually plans on marrying and settling down. This all seemed both premature and immature to me, but it's beside the point.
Leah, on the other hand, is a nightmare. She’s cheated on Mark several times now and every time she does, she gives Mark some lame story about him not being supportive enough or that she made a mistake or that she wanted to see him get jealous for her sake. He gobbles it up every time. According to Mark, Leah largely acts like this because her father was very abusive towards her and her mother, and therefore she carries a lot of trauma with her. Mark constantly reiterated that he wants to help her work past that, but things haven't really been going his way.
Since September, Leah has been seeing this other guy, Derek (M22), and she’s 100% infatuated with him. I only know this based on what my other friends (and Mark) have been telling me because I was in another state for college.
Mark has been arguing a lot with Leah about Derek, and she has threatened to leave Mark if he doesn’t just simply accept her for “who she is.” He did. Not only that, he and Leah have entered what he calls a semi-open relationship. This means, according to Mark, that Leah is allowed to see Derek as much as she wants, but Mark isn’t allowed to see anyone else. This is because Leah feared Mark would become emotionally invested in them and leave her. Mark begrudgingly agreed to this and has been seething for months about it.
Since about November, Leah has been seeing Derek more than she does Mark. While Mark doesn’t admit to it, our other friends have told me that she is essentially in a full-time relationship with Derek and only comes to Mark for money and emotional support.
Fast forward to this week, and I’m back home for the break. Mark started texting me on Saturday, saying that he hated Derek for “trying to steal his girl” and wanted to beat his ass that night. He said that he wanted me to come along since all of our other friends couldn’t (they made up excuses not to go; they have told me this, but Mark doesn’t know). Since I just got back home the day before, I was still exhausted, so I point-blank refused Mark’s request. I told him that Leah was a lost cause, and I wasn’t going to fight some people I’d never seen for her. Mark started begging me, saying that Leah is the love of his life and that he needs my help. I refused again. He then says that he’ll go on his own, but I told him that he probably shouldn’t.
I woke up Sunday morning to more than 300 messages on my phone from Mark and all our friends. Long story short, Mark went over to Derek’s place to bring Leah back. He ended up getting his ass kicked by Derek and his friends. They only stopped when Leah asked them to. I called Mark and told him that he should probably talk to a lawyer or something, but he refused since Leah asked him to not escalate the situation.
I then told him that he was being dumb, and this triggered him so much. He started saying how I was a bitch and a snake for not backing him up and how I was a fake friend. I was so irritated at this point, so I told Mark that he deserved to get jumped and that it made sense why Leah preferred Derek over him. He hung up on me, and we haven’t spoken since.
Since then, my other friends have been saying that I’m an asshole for how I handled the conversation, but they do agree Mark is a dumbass.

Update #1: December 24, 2023
Some of my friends and I ended up going out with Mark to see how he was doing. We didn't want to go to his parents' place since Leah was now living there with him and we didn't want to see her. He does look very beaten up (black eye, bruises all over his face and arms, busted lip, etc.), but he was surprisingly in a good mood and even insisted that I didn't have to apologize for how I spoke last time.
He told us that Derek ended up dumping Leah a few days after the fight. Apparently, he asked Leah to dump Mark. She refused, and they argued (I'll spare you most of it). Their conversation ended with Leah being kicked out of his apartment in the middle of the night, and Mark had to come pick her up. He has refused his parent's (and our) request to escalate the situation at Leah's request.
Mark has said that Leah has been very depressed about Derek dumping her and spends a lot of the days crying. Mark just says he's incredibly thankful to be there to comfort her and emotionally support her. He keeps on saying that when it comes down to it, Leah chose him over Derek, and nothing can take that away. Like I said above, Leah has decided to return to living with Mark, she can technically go to her mother's house but doesn't want to.
Here's the real kicker: Mark says that he has a very good reason to believe Leah might be in the early stages of pregnancy now. My friends and I assumed the child was Derek's, but Mark insisted that regardless, it would be his kid. We asked him to get paternity testing, and he has refused since "he can't do that to Leah." We've told him that the relationship is toxic, but he didn't want to hear it since that was a "matter of perspective." Also, his parents have no clue about the potential pregnancy.
He says that in the future, he doesn't want us to say anything about Leah unless it is the absolute truth (his speech of singing her praises). My other friends and I all left pretty stunned, and I'm thinking that at this stage, I'll slowly be removing myself from Mark's life.
It sucks since I've known him for a long time and do enjoy his company. But I don't think I'll be able to remain friends with him in good faith if I'm not able to speak honestly to him.

butterpiescottish I, in Mark's mother's place, would kick Leah out of my house and tell Mark that the child would not enter my house without a paternity test and I would no longer be supporting him financially.

OOP If his parents try anything, he'll go no contact with them. He told us that between his parents (dad and step mom) and Leah, he's choosing Leah.
It really does suck, and I feel like it is extremely unfair to them.

 
Update #2: January 21, 2024
Last Post I've been receiving some DMs from people asking what happened with Mark. Since the winter break ended, I have returned to college so I haven't seen him since the day he spoke with me and the other guys. All the information I've been receiving about him has thus come from our Whatsapp group or what the other guys have been telling me. I've only texted Mark himself twice since then and both instances were about things unrelated to Leah.
However, there are some updates. As of last weekend, Mark confirmed on our group chat that Leah is indeed pregnant. He is excited about "becoming a dad", also we'll probably never know if the child is his or Derek's since Mark has rejected the idea of a paternity test and asked us to not bring it up again. However, my friends told me that they are fairly certain the kid's Derek's based on the timeline.
Mark and Leah are still living with his parents and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Mark works part-time in addition to taking some online courses at a college. Therefore, he and Leah are still largely being supported by his parents. Mark did message us telling us that his parents did argue with him a bit, but he managed to convince them to keep Leah and a child with them. He also told us that Leah told him that she preferred staying with him instead of going back home to her mom. It's only speculation, but some of the other guys and I assume that Mark may threatened no contact with his own parents if they don't accept Leah and the kid since he hinted at that during our last conversation.
Mark has also been trying to convince Leah to go into therapy but so far she has refused all of his persuasions. On the bright side, Mark has told us Leah is no longer interested in open relationships (possibly due to her fallout with Derek) and is dedicated to only him.

I hope she realizes that Mark is a good person who is willing to cut off contact with his own parents to stay with her and the child even though it might not be his and starts to value him.
On the other hand my fear is that she find someone else who is in a better situation than mark and who is willing to take it on with a child and she abandons mark again.
And the part where Leah no longer wants an open relationship I think is due to the fact that Mark regains consciousness and leaves her and the son, I hope I'm wrong and that Leah has in fact changed and become a better person.

OOP Honestly, I've been slowly distancing myself from the guy so I'm not sure which direction he plans on going. That being said, he has reiterated that who the kid's biological father is means nothing to him as he plans on raising it as his own

It's been a while since my last post, mainly this is because I've had very little communication with Mark and have been focused on my studies. Now that I'm home for summer vacation, I was able to catch up on all the Mark bs.
Firstly, Mark and Leah got married. It was a very small, town hall-type wedding just to get a marriage certificate. This happened about a month and a half ago.
Since then, Mark has become a complete POS. He regularly fights with his step-mom and dad since he thinks they make Leah feel "unwelcomed". It got so bad that they had Mark and Leah move out to an apartment on the other side of town. They give them about 2k a month to cover their living expenses and Mark works part-time to cover everything else they need.
Since getting married, all Mark ever posts on our group chat is how amazing Leah is, and how wrong we were for trying to get him to leave. Tbh, I find it so annoying, that I've put the group on mute. Some of the other guys and I have since made another group chat with everyone except Mark in it because we are all tired of his bs.
Mark has also started treating some of the other guys in the group like shit. This one guy, Alan, helped Mark and Leah move to the apartment and then Mark started accusing him of trying to make a move on pregnant Leah 🤢. Alan of course denied it, but Mark still accuses him from time to time. It is so uncalled for, tbh it ruined the entire group's opinion of Mark.
A few days ago, when I got back home from school, I decided to drop in and see Mark in person. He was chill but then started going about how he again thought Alan was trying to move in on Leah. It was awkward, I told him he was imagining it and nobody aside from him would want Leah, he kinda jokingly kinda seriously called me a dick and I haven't spoken to him since then. Thank God Leah wasn't home at the time because I didn't want to see her.
Ngl, myself and the other guys sometimes joke that "Dereck" needs to come back and set Mark straight again. But on a serious note, I have decided to no longer have ANY contact with Mark, and if I post in the future again about trying to build up a relationship with him or interacting with him in any way I'll be a hypocrite, a lying POS.
Leah is now very noticeably pregnant. Mark told us that the doctor told them that the due date is probably going to be in mid-August.
Nobody has heard of Derek, but rumour has it Leah tried to contact him again a few times though he ghosted her when he found out about the pregnancy.
Honestly, I think my life will be a lot simpler when I drop Mark and his family out of my life, most of our other friends group is doing this and I'll encourage those on the fence to do the same.

I’ve been a part of this subreddit for a bit and I’ve seen a lot of people posting about feeling stuck either in their major or their job and either not knowing what exactly to pursue or not knowing how to make their next move.
I feel like I should share my experience with my career path to possible offer some encouragement /advice about shifting and feeling stuck.
To start, in my opinion, a degree is a degree. A lot of people, contrary to popular cultural belief, don’t have a college degree and just the possession of a degree in some professions while show the recruiteinterviewer that you can start and finish something.
I have a Kinesiology bachelors and a Masters in Sports Management, but I work for a work comp insurance company as an underwriter (incredibly unrelated to my education).
I was in the spot of feeling stuck because I was trying to find jobs closely related to my educational background. I managed a gym for a couple years (didn’t hate it, didn’t love it) until I realized I needed to broaden my search for an actual opportunity that I could grow in.
What I learned on my journey:

1. Networking is KEY!

I’m quite introverted, so at first, bringing myself to talk to random people was difficult. But, you gotta take the “rip off the bandaid” approach to it and just do it. You never know how a simple conversation or joke can create a relationship that can start your career.

1. Not all money is good money.

This can be rather straightforward. But I’ll give an example. I started out my current job making a little less money and working the same hours as when I managed a gym, BUT the work/life balance of my current job is incredible. M F work from home, T-Th in office. Compare that to a job that you start out with a high salary and are overworked with a bad work/life balance (you’d hate it even if you tried to justify it for the money)

1. If you’re curious about a job, try to get an interview and use it to learn more about the job/company.

When I broadened my search, I had no clue what I wanted to do, so I applied for everything I thought I could have interest in. I used to think of interviews as “if you do this you’re settling on this specific job”, but that’s not the case. It’s kinda like a first date. You’re learning about if it’s something you want to invest time in.

1. Company environment > money

Enjoying the atmosphere and your coworkers is so much better in the long run than just going for the higher $. A good environment will actively cause you to want to invest in the company (work wise). Let it be learning to be more efficient, pursuing certification, pursuing promotion, etc. A good environment will eventually lead to better mental health and greater fulfillment from your job.

1. Be responsibly aggressive

When you find an opportunity you like and are interested in, do not be afraid to show that you want it. This can certainly help when you’re interviewing for a position/industry that you have no experience in. Show that you are willing and able to learn something new and try to find evidence from your experience that shows that you’ve done that in the past. Continuously follow up with your connection (if that’s how you found the job opportunity) and/or the HR department to keep your name in their head. (This is similar to the dumb ads you see on social media that you finally cave to after seeing it 17x)

1. Tailor your resume to the job you’re applying for AND Every opportunity is a learning opportunity

I know this COULD be common knowledge, BUT I wasn’t doing this at first. One of the first interviews I had was for an HR position. At the time, I thought I would want to be in HR. I KILLED the interview and thought the job was mine. But, after FOUR interviews…I got the call that they were going with someone with more experience. That absolutely shredded my motivation, but since I established a rapport (sort of) with the HR director that interviewed me and gave me the call, I turned the call into a conversation about how I could adjust my strategy to break into an industry that I had no experience in. Which brings me to my second part of this. During our conversation, we went through my resume again and they made some good points. My resume had way too much fluff (in my job experience part). Personally, I thought every bullet point I put on there was relevant, but in actuality some of it just didn’t matter. A big part of working at a gym can be sales and maintenance of equipment, but that just doesn’t matter if you’re applying to an HR position. Lean into the aspects of your current job (or experience) that most directly applies to the job that you’re seeking. In my case, I could lean into customer service, or my experience in hiring and managing employees, etc.

1. Look at the big picture.

The job you’re moving to may give you a lower salary than your current one. It’s important to find out about the opportunities that a company has to allow you to grow within the company. Do they give an annual raise, bonus, benefit package, etc.? Do they have a history of promoting from within? Companies that offer these things are MUCH better than securing a higher salary at the cost of missing out on these opportunities. You may be set for now, but in 5, 10, 20, 40 years, do you have an investment portfolio? The same exact job and position?

1. NETWORKING IS KEY

I had to put this twice because it’s such an important point. So many people think that they are THE MAN and that no one is a better fit than them. That’s not the case for 99% of jobs. It’s about who you know, not what you know.
In my case, I created a relationship with a gym member that started when I saw the company on his jacket. My mom worked for their direct competitor, so I made a joke and we both laughed. Over the next months he would stop and talk and eventually we grew pretty close and our conversations got deeper. He asked me one day what I was looking for in a career. He had no clue that literally a week before he asked that was when I got the call that I didn’t get the HR job I was interviewing for. I just simply told him “I honestly have no idea”. I told him about the situation and that I felt stuck. He asked if I ever thought about being an underwriter. So I told him honestly and jokingly “I’ve never heard of that before”. We had a good laugh, and he told me after to look into it, and if I was interested, there was a position opening up at his company that he could try to help me get into. Fast forward to now, I’ve been at this company for 6 months, have already gotten a raise, and a plan to follow to get a promotion by the time I hit a year.
Your connection to an opportunity is just as, if not more, important than your knowledge. That connection can fill in the blanks that your interviewer may have after your interview and represent you in a way that you may not be able to represent yourself in the interview. They can be your testimony that you’re a hard worker, are great with customers, quick to learn things, good at deescalating situations, etc.

I’m in my mid-to late 30s and need to turn my life around…I’ve never made more than $25k in a year …and that’s in a good year. I’ve worked since I was 18. Graduated college with a bachelors in philosophy/art at the height of 08 -09 recession, I worked in art galleries as an art handler and whatever else, eventually worked at a large and well known museum in NYC for visitor services, then worked shipping and receiving at a large bookstore while going back to school at night for environmental science/sustainability post-baccalaureate certification.
I struggled again to get a job in my mid-late 20s with any non profit or the NYC parks department, I interned and volunteered hoping someone would hire me and also applied to all sorts of programs and grants etc, but I couldn’t get any interest from employers. I was basically working for free and it started to upset me so I took the GRE and considered more school for a master’s degree but ended up managing a craft beer & liquor store/home-brew store in NJ for a few years while working in tasting rooms. I also interned at small indie record label in NJ.
In 2016 around the time I was 30 I decided to move to Los Angeles, stay with friends, and took an immersive web development course. I eventually got paid small amounts to freelance and make very basic websites and worked on very basic API’s, really just tinkering around, definitely wouldn’t consider myself an engineer or coder by any means, it was never a “real” job, and I never felt like I was good at web development and didn’t come to enjoy it like I hoped I would, at times became anxious and depressed, it all felt so fake and scammy, at least as I experienced it back then.
During Covid I had roommates who thankfully asked me to help them out and I “worked” (again not a “real” job) for them on digital events, basic tech wrangling, which slowly morphed into acting as a Production Assistant for them (my roommates also incorporated their own production company). It was a unique, fun and low pressure arrangement, my roommates threw me a bone work-wise which was honestly really nice of them, I got by, but overall it allowed me to just procrastinate about having to find a “real” job, things stagnated.
Now its 2024 and I recently left LA and now live back in NJ/NYC area where I live with my parents. I’m currently volunteering at an independent radio station.
Once I gave up the dream of some ideal magic 6 figure tech salary back when I was still relatively young and when it actually would have mattered, I really hit a wall of depression and regret. I checked out. I can’t even imagine myself being that ambitious anymore, now I’m back in my childhood home, flat broke, totally alone, burnt out, directionless, all my friends own homes and are married with kids and I can’t deny I’m getting old and physically really feel it this year, it sucks, I know I won’t be able to do the physically demanding dumb shitty jobs I used to do for much longer, its got me feeling helpless.
Sure, I have some degrees and certificates from reputable universities, and some solid work experience with plenty of references that will vouch for me, but I’ve never had any sort of “real” office job or anything that paid barely more than minimum wage, when I think about it the best paying gig I probably had was when I was a fancy waiter around age 20-21. I’ve avoided the corporate scene my whole life. I don’t use social media, I have no “network” and even if I did, it’s not like I have specialized or in-demand skills or have held any positions with any responsibilities above the most basic entry level -low level jobs, and most of those are from 5-10 years ago anyway, which is certainly not impressive for anyone, let alone someone who’s pushing 40.
When I am able to overcome the negative/depressive thinking I tell myself I still have time, that I can work hard and with the right guidance and mentorship I know I could thrive in most environments but….where do I go? Why would anyone want to help me at this age? I know there’s no quick fix, I’ve made poor decisions and gave up on myself time and time again and there’s no one to blame but myself. All my crappy hourly wages from years of hard work were spent on education and rent. There’s nothing left. I look in the mirror in the morning and know that soon it really will be too late. I’m single and would love to meet someone but fear I have nothing to offer.

How can I not waste the next 6 months so I can be on my way to a decent salary with benefits. To make a salary of even 50k a year, it would profoundly change my life. People talk all the time about how life gets better in your 30s etc, but honestly, I’m over halfway thru my 30s and this is by far the lowest point in my life and I’m so ashamed. In fact, I’m starting to not even feel shame anymore, it’s just a blankness. What is the light at the end of the tunnel here? Working and working to save up for what? I’ll never be able to afford even the crappiest tiny apartment around here unless I start making like 100k a year. When I was younger I had friends and social outlets to help prop me up and act as a buffer to the harshness of being an underemployed broke loser because we were all in the same situation more or less. I used to be inspired by artistic or creative dreams that I could put energy into, but now those friends and dreams seem like a distant memory and I just wake up sore every day, feel it in my bones. I haven’t had a celebratory or rewarding moment, especially regarding anything career-oriented, since I was around 19 years old.
Saving up and moving to California all on my own was such a huge deal for me and I feel like I had so much going for me 6-7 years ago but I really blew it by not trying harder in my early 30s. I let depression drag me down and now I have to live the rest of my life knowing my crucial early adulthood was spent on mindless pursuits that led to nothing, I can’t remember the last time I was really happy. It feels like I have to make up some story for every future job interview or every future date just because the reality is too pathetic. Working in tech seems so risky and stressful with the layoffs and how oversaturated it is, I really didn’t like it and its not a field I’m particularly comfortable with but at this age it sometimes seems like one of the few options I have left, how else could someone like me make 6 figures?…. I’m at a loss as to what to do, I can’t just get another shit job and waste another year, my body honestly can’t take it anymore, I want to start finally living my life and stop worrying 24/7, I need help.

Hi! If i wont be able to submit my report card sa campus on the given date, pano yung date na ilalagay dito? Yung date ba kung kelan irerelease yung report card ko from my current school or yung date na lang na ilalagay is if when ko mapapasa yung repord card onsite? And if yung date na ilalagay here is yung date mismo kung kelan ka makakabalik sa ust para ipasa yung card, so kahit anong date pwede ilagay? Always open ba ang ust para magpasa ng requirements any time?
