I am a 35y/o non-traditional student getting into a second career and wondering what experiences are valued most. Do they want mainly relevant experiences to PT or should I look to create a well rounded view showing I have real life experiences? I don't want to get too off base, but I also don't want it to look like my professional life or relevant experiences started in the last few years...

About myself: I am 36M, 5'5", 155 lbs. I just completed my 4th half marathon in the past 5 years. I always sign up to run one in April and start training in Jan/Feb. I don't run frequently for the rest of the year, but like to do a 5k race here and there. The big reason I am posting is because my goal the last two half-marathons has been to get under 2 hours. Last year I got 2:07 and last Saturday was 2:03:28. I know I can do better and am looking for places to improve, including my shoes.
History with shoes: I have been using Altra Torins and Lone Peaks since I picked up running again in my late 20s. I run about 90% paved vs 10% trails, including one trail half marathon. I used to be a heel striker in HS Cross Country but I believe I am now a midfoot striker after working on my running form with Altras.
Here's what I've used:
Daily Trainer: I am thinking something along the lines of a Torin with a low/no drop and easy miles. I am foot/leg health conscious and want to continue working on that with low drop shoes. Probably 6 mm is the max drop I am willing to do.

Here's what I've used:
- Altra Torin 3-5
- Been overall happy with these shoes from a comfort standpoint. I recently experienced mild shin splints with the Torin 5
- I have done my races in Torins but am looking for a better race/tempo shoe.
- Altra Torin 6
- I got a lightly used pair to train/race in this year and I always experienced some foot pain around the arches around mile 2-3. I don't know if there is something wrong with them. I ended up racing in my Torin 5.
- Altra Lone Peak 2.5-5
- I use these more for hiking, but also do some trail running in them.
- Topo Athletic Ultraventure
- I've use one pair of these I got for free and I was really happy with them. I did mixed hiking/trail running.

These are experiences I’m sharing the helped me and my family go from a 500sqft. Facility with small group training to a 7500sqft. facility with small group training, turf rentals for sports, sport lessons, chiropractic, acupuncture, qi gong, meditation, and nutritional services. We’ve served thousands of people at this point. There’s my qualifications, I guess. Let’s dive in…
One time I was watching Shark Tank and I heard Mark Cuban say something along the lines of, “I try notice when most people are looking in a certain direction… when that happens I try to look around the corner at what they’re not seeing.”
It’s one of those quotes you don’t really understand until there’s a situation where it applies.
When I first started my gym back in 2017 I spent hours and hours learning about internet marketing. Facebook ads, click funnels, how to write copy, Google ads, and all of the things that, in 2024, our brains immediately think about when we hear the term “marketing.”
If you’re an online coach, yeah, you need to have a strong skill set in online marketing with the things mentioned above. And everyone in this sub should have some sort of idea of how to use at least some of those things. They are 100% extremely useful.
However, for many of us, “marketing” and business isn’t a strong suit. And frankly, that’s fine. You don’t need to be a marketing expert, no matter what anyone says in here you do not need a business degree, but you do need to know what an excitation contraction coupling is, the difference between Krebs cycle and glycolysis, the origins and insertions of all of the muscles, aerobic adaptations to the cardiovascular system, differences between cardiac and skeletal muscle tissue, etc. You need to master your craft. Shitty products need more marketing than great ones. Be great.
Stepping down off of my soapbox and getting back to it…
As useful and important as social media & search engine marketing can be, what happens if we look around the corner? Just like Mark Cuban’s advice.
Here’s something I notice at my gym when our clients are training. We train in groups of usually between 5-8 people, sometimes more, sometimes less. It’s all “small to medium” group training. I honestly hate doing 1-on-1 at this point in my career. Having a group creates a different atmosphere and takes pressure off the coach… but I’ll get into that.
When our clients are training their phones are away, they’re working out (obviously), but they’re laughing, smiling, getting to know each other, sometimes talking politics (eek) and building genuine, long lasting relationships.
We have 2 women in our 6AM group who have trained with us for 7 years! They didn’t know each other when they first started… now they are literally best friends and are planning to retire at the same time together.
I have these two kids who would have never interacted with each other because they are from quite different “clicks” in school. One is a jock and the other is more of a gamer type. They have become best buddies. These two young are both 16 years old. One lost his father in 2019 and doesn’t have the most stable home life. He’s like my little brother, although he thinks I’m old because I’m 31. But he’s a shit head in the best sense of the term. His mom wants him training so he has a male role model he regularly gets to interact with. I love that fucking kid. The other has a stable home life and is hands down the strongest kid in the gym and probably at his school. His “sport” is lifting after school with me. He has a condition with his eyes where he’s not completely blind, but for sure can’t see well enough to play many sports.
These kids have become the best of friends. They do everything together and if it weren’t for the gym they never would have even spoken to one another. Now, the young man who lost his father has a true friend in his corner. The change in him is amazing. Both of them work their asses and are role models for everyone around them.
Where I’m going with this is that people crave connection. Whether they know it or not they want to feel connected with one another. This can be done online, for example, I know that what I write about makes us feel connected. Well, I hope some of you feel that way toward me. I feel like I can relate to so many of you, strangers or not. Even if we bitch at each other about semantics and philosophies, I just truly believe in the power of what we do and these subreddits are great to connect with you all. Even if we never talk, I see your posts, concerns, and questions!
Yet, I don’t think an online connection can hold a candle to a relationship where you get to know someone in person. I know you can meet the love of your life online, but you can’t deepen that connection until you build a relationship face-to-face. Perhaps there’s examples of this not being true, I’m sure, but sue me I’m not a love doctor (despite what I tell my wife).
Ok, I’m going to tie this back into marketing now.
If you’re an in-person trainer then your clientele lives within a 10-20 minute radius, but probably closer to a 10-15 minute radius. Depending on where you live this could be hundreds, but hopefully at least a few thousand people. Nevertheless, you’ve planted yourself into a local community. Whether it be an entire town or a few blocks.
Communities have schools, youth sports, chambers of commerce, clubs, scouts, home schoolers, places and living environments for aging demographics, religious groups, etc. If you do your homework you’ll find tons of organizations that are very passionate about, guess what? Their local community!
While everyone is looking up how to target their ideal demographic on Facebook ads, why don’t you send an email to one of the leaders for these micro communities within the bigger picture? Maybe even go Introduce yourself? Wild idea!
I’ve sent countless emails to people like this…
“Hey Josh (Youth football president), my name is Ambitious_Froyo_1568. I’m a trainer in town and I want to grow my clientele, but I truly want to be a part of the community as I build my small business and raise a family here. I’m looking for ways to get involved. I was wondering if there’s any opportunity for me to help do some fundraising for the league, maybe offer a workout class for the kids that can be donated back to the league so you can purchase more equipment for those who can’t afford? Anyhow, thanks for any thought you put into this. Hope to hear from you soon!

People respect honesty, boldness, and authenticity. The more straight up you are the more people trust you, and rightfully so! And if you can develop that sort of relationship with a “key holder” type person, you are connecting yourself with an influential person to dozens, or more, people.
Along with emails, I’ve walked into businesses, introduced myself to coaches, teachers, admins at the schools. I visit the same diners, get coffee at the same place, grab a beer at the same bars, I set up tents as a vendor at community events like curbside sales, 5K races, the Turkey trot every year, etc.
These are things you can do right now, like today!
You have to get yourself out into the community. You have to show face, build genuine relationships. Not the kind that you’re going into the relationship where in the back of your mind you’re thinking, “How can I sell this person on training?” That’s scarce thinking and it will come across slimy. Like Eminem does in 8-mile in that famous last rap battle… own your shit.
“Yeah, I’m obviously trying to grow my business… let’s get that out of the way. But I’m just a coach who wants to do this in an honest way while being a benefit to my local community.”
How is someone going to get mad at or lose trust for you over that?
So while the rest of the trainers around you are too busy making TikTok’s and shitty Facebook ads, get out there! You feel scared right now? Like you’re failing?
Go out to 1 new place today, email 2-3 new people right now. Be honest, be up front, don’t expect that it’s going to automatically give you new clients, but do it anyway!
If you fill a jug with a thousand small drops of water over time, it will fill up. (I get it, there’s evaporation but don’t fuck up my analogy with scientific semantics).
Google and social media are great, use those things, they will only continue to fuel the fire. But also go old school, shake some hands, kiss some babies.
That’s where I’m looking now, “around the corner” at being a part of community while building a micro community myself.
More than ever, we hold events, outings, and gatherings with our clients. The training is obviously the draw, but people stay for the friends and camaraderie they experience.
We’ve gotten to the point where along with getting involved with local organizations like the little league, youth football, the teams at the school, etc. we now have a community of our own at the gym that we keep building.
As a coach, I’ve realized one of the most important parts of my job is to facilitate a positive community through utilizing exercise as the common denominator.
As you build a community within your own walls, a crowd attracts a crowd. People will invite their friends, family and loved ones. They’ll talk about how great you are and they’ll want to introduce you to those people in their lives. You’ll build meaningful relationships that fulfill your heart and soul, but theirs too!
Even if people stop training with you, never stop treating them any different. Even when it hurts to lose them, be there for them if they ever want to come back or not. When you see them out, say hi, smile, ask about their kids, and let it go.
So go bootstrap and as you get a few clients start inviting them to a beer night at the local bar or a wine tasting or a coffee meet up. Start a book club with them, I don’t know, go be creative!
I hope this helps orient your thoughts around action steps you can do today. Actions that don’t require you to create a marketing campaign that will take weeks and months to saturate. Do that stuff too, but in the meantime there’s some food for thought for you.

A friend loaned me their Logitech G29 to see if I'd like sim racing and now its time to buy my own set up. I've narrowed it down to Fanatec and Simagic. I've done enough research to make my head spin. Spending $1,322 is a lot of money and while I spend that I need to justify the cost. "Does more equal more better". The Simagic setup is almost double the cost of the Fanatec but is it double the value? Looking especially for opinions of people who have tried both. Prices listed bellow are out the door prices with tax/shipping included. I'm aware of the Fanatec logistics and customer service issues but I'm attracted to their ecosystem, community, and re sale value. Also, I will note I have a NLR WS 2.0 on order that I will be using. I'd prefer the CSL Elite V2's over the CSL LC's but they are out of stock in US.

There is a used ESD for sale in my area and used bikes are VERY hard to come by in my size (XL). I'm wondering if this one would feel small or not, and if it's a good deal. I'm just shy of 6'4", long-ish arms (prefer 36/37 length long sleeves) and inseam of 34"-36".

I will keep this as short as possible without sacrificing too much detail.
What is TC Motorfest ?
TCM is a game made by Ivory Tower and published by Ubisoft, it is a 3rd game in well known by now franchise called The Crew. Now short history about franchise. First The Crew was released in 2014 and it was something fresh to the racing scene. It had and still has one of the biggest racing games maps and it was a scaled down version of whole USA. Game was focused more on a social side where to fully enjoy it you had option to play in a crew with friends hence name The Crew. Fast forward to 2018 where we get sequel called The Crew 2 (very original). It took same formula from the crew 1 with same map but added ton of disciplines and was starting to adapt festival vibe from horizon games. It had some downgrades from first crew game mainly in graphics but it didn't stop it to become most successful crew game. After long 5 years we finally got new crew game. It was more of an spin off as it didn't continue with having numbers in its name and adopted a Motorfest name. It is also full 180 from previous 2 games. It takes place on much smaller map based on Hawaii but with smaller scale it is also much more detailed. Graphics also got updated massively compared to the 2nd game. Physics were redone where cars now feel more like cars and not toys on plastic tracks. Audio was also massively improved. With Motorfest they gone full into the festival theme to the point it feels similar to horizon games. They interduce playlist system as a way to progress the game. It is basically themed events like for example donut media, Japanese street racing, Prosche history, Hoonigan and much more. Game still focuses on social aspect where you can join other peoples crews and explore together.
Why I want it ?
Simple I am a fan of these franchise. I played first and second crew game and I done 100% of both game and even aced all events. They are very fun games for completionists and generally fun chill games for scratching and open world itch besides horizon series.
About 90% of first and second game I completed with my close friend but for now in motorfest if i get it I will play solo until he gets better pc.
Also I herd it is good fun on a wheel so why not.
Why I can't get it ?
Well I don't have any means to pay for it. Reason is that I don't use credit cards. If I want to buy a game I usually grind cs2 cases or doing small jobs on the internet but I don't have time to do that as it takes very long time to actually get any meaningful amount of money.
Also I am saving money to do some much needed renovation to the house.

With Motorfest they gone full into the festival theme to the point it feels similar to horizon games. They interduce playlist system as a way to progress the game. It is basically themed events like for example donut media, Japanese street racing, Prosche history, Hoonigan and much more. Game still focuses on social aspect where you can join other peoples crews and explore together.
Why I want it ?
Simple I am a fan of these franchise. I played first and second crew game and I done 100% of both game and even aced all events. They are very fun games for completionists and generally fun chill games for scratching and open world itch besides horizon series.
About 90% of first and second game I completed with my close friend but for now in motorfest if i get it I will play solo until he gets better pc.
Also I herd it is good fun on a wheel so why not.
Why I can't get it ?
Well I don't have any means to pay for it. Reason is that I don't use credit cards. If I want to buy a game I usually grind cs2 cases or doing small jobs on the internet but I don't have time to do that as it takes very long time to actually get any meaningful amount of money.
Also I am saving money to do some much needed renovation to the house.

2024.04.30 19:46 Skeepitty Drop pods causing extreme lag?
Been having this problem for a while now where drop pods cause the game to slow down a LOT, like down to 2 fps a lot. Its all drop pod events that do this even when you drop in at the start of the game.
When i open the game it doesn't show that there are any problems anywhere so I'm not even sure where to start looking. I've put my mod order list below in case there are any glaring conflicts/a known mod that causes this. Any help on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

- We began by discussing some policy language that ended up in the budget bills Republicans approved during the final days of the session. Most policy bills go through the committee process, but it’s common for Iowa lawmakers to revive some previously “dead” ideas in appropriations bills;
- The education budget (Senate File 2435) includes language codifying what the Iowa Board of Regents is already doing with diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. Only DEI initiatives that are required by law or for universities’ accreditation will be considered. The Iowa House had approved that policy as part of a broader higher education bill, which the Senate did not take up in March;
- The education budget also includes language requiring K-12 school districts to adopt certain policies related to absenteeism. This grew out of another House bill that didn’t make it through the second funnel in the Senate. Schools would need to notify the county attorney’s office as well as parents or guardians. Democrats expressed concern that parents may pull their kids out of school completely if they are afraid of getting in legal trouble with the county attorney;
- The judicial branch budget (Senate File 2436) includes several provisions House Republicans were seeking: a 5 percent raise for judges (the House had sought a 6 percent raise, while Governor Kim Reynolds and Senate Republicans initially offered 2 percent);
- The budget includes some changes to the judicial pension system, a topic Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Susan Christensen had raised during her annual address to state lawmakers. The final language is not exactly what the judicial branch was seeking, but it should help resolve an issue that was lowering judges’ take-home pay;
- House Republicans had sought an increase in juror pay, but that didn’t make it into the final budget bill;
- One important point: House Republicans held the line against the Senate’s effort to change the judicial selection process. State Senator Julian Garrett has been trying for years to remove judges from the district judicial nominating commissions and give the governor one extra appointee to those bodies;
- The justice systems budget (House File 2693) included funding to raise pay for corrections workers to a minimum of $24/hour. Contract attorneys who handle indigent defense will also have a small increase for their fee. Republicans rejected Democratic efforts to increase victim assistance funding, which may experience a big shortfall if the federal government cuts funds states receive from the federal Victims of Crime Act;
- The “standings” budget bill (Senate File 2443) includes another big cut (around $32.5 million) to Area Education Agencies. It’s not clear how AEAs will be able to replace staff who are leaving in large numbers due to recent legislative changes;
- The same bill does include $14 million earmarked to raise pay for para-educators who work with special education students. That was part of the final AEA compromise and was very important to House Republicans. But that funding stream is not guaranteed to continue beyond the coming fiscal year;
- A late addition to the standings bill will give the Iowa Department of Public Safety $2 million to create a task force on “the rise in illegal immigration and related criminal conduct.” That wasn’t well-defined, so I don’t know exactly how that agency will spend the money;
- We heard some chatter about changes to the required law enforcement presence in Iowa casinos, but that did not make it into the standings bill;
- The Senate amended an education bill (House File 2545) a few days before adjournment to add language on new social studies curriculum requirements. This bill is not as detailed as one House Republicans approved earlier in the year, but it does mandate a focus on “western civilization” and certain topics in U.S. history;
- We ticked through a bunch of bills that one chamber approved and the other chamber didn’t take up, in addition to the ones Dennis and I discussed last week. I expect at least some of these proposals to come back during next year’s legislative session;
- As a general philosophy, Iowa Senate Republicans aren’t interested in passing as many bills as are their counterparts in the House. But the Senate did approve a few bills that never got to the House floor. One would have undermined the state auditor’s ability to routinely audit state agencies;
- Another bill (which was originally proposed by the Iowa Attorney General’s office) would have limited “defense subpoenas,” which criminal defendants can use to obtain information to assist their defense. My impression is that the scandal surrounding warrantless surveillance of athletes charged with gambling violations is one reason that bill got tripped up in the House;
- Senate Republicans also passed another bill this year that would limit the state’s ability to acquire new public land. Big Ag interests tend to be behind those proposals, so I anticipate that concept will return in some form in 2025;
- A lot of House bills didn’t make it through the Senate this year. We talked about some of them last week, but we didn’t get to these. An election bill included many terrible ideas to make it harder to vote by mail, as well as a total ban on drop boxes;
- The House added “personhood” language to a fetal homicide bill. Although Senate Republicans had approved a nearly identical bill in 2019, the upper chamber buried the bill this year out of fears it would cause problems for fertility treatments such as IVF;
- House Republicans voted to create specialty license plates featuring the Gadsden flag (“Don’t Tread On Me”), with some proceeds going to the NRA’s Iowa affiliate;
- A couple of tax bills that had broad bipartisan support didn’t make it through the upper chamber. I would welcome insight on whether senators had substantive concerns about creating a film tax credit or increasing the adoption tax credit. My impression is that those bills became casualties of unrelated disputes between the chambers;
- House Republicans also sought to cap tuition at state universities;
- On the very last night of the legislative session, House Republicans voted for a new five-year moratorium on casino licenses. The Senate adjourned without considering it. I have no idea why the House waited so long to put that on the calendar;
- I was intrigued that neither the House nor the Senate approved a bill on electric transmission lines. This is a complicated issue but Republicans were enraged last year when the Iowa Supreme Court enjoined the policy, saying it was passed through unconstitutional means in 2020. I thought the chambers might approve the legislation as a stand-alone bill this year, and the House and Senate Commerce committees both advanced the bill in time for the first “funnel,” but the bill got no further;
- A quick bit of Congressional news: the entire Iowa delegation approved a $95 billion foreign aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and the Far East;
- U.S. Representative Ashley Hinson finally spoke publicly last week about her recent visit to Ukraine, which she and Senator Joni Ernst for some reason weren’t eager to talk about a few weeks ago;
- A coalition of environmental organizations petitioned the EPA this month, urging the federal government to step in and protect Iowa drinking water in the northeast part of the state;
- The EPA did agree to allow sales of higher ethanol blends (E-15) this summer. The Biden administration has done this for the third year in a row; many Iowa politicians would prefer the federal government to permanently allow E-15 sales year-round;
- Wrapping up with a little news about the Iowa Congressional races: GOP incumbent Randy Feenstra (IA-04) is taking nothing for granted as he faces a primary challenger. Kevin Virgil. He spent more than $770,000 during the first quarter of this year, including more than $200,000 on media buys and some $215,000 on direct mail;
- The National Republican Congressional Committee signaled this past weekend that defending Representative Zach Nunn in IA-03 will be a high priority for them. On Saturday they launched a “battle station” (campaign headquarters) in West Des Moines;
- Nunn has struggled a bit in the fundraising department and was out-raised last quarter by Democratic challenger Lanon Baccam;
- GOP incumbent Ashley Hinson continues to have a big financial advantage over Democratic challenger Sarah Corkery in IA-02;
- House Speaker Mike Johnson headlined an event for Mariannette Miller-Meeks in Iowa City this weekend. Democratic challenger Christina Bohannan has out-raised Miller-Meeks three quarters in a row and is close to matching the incumbent’s cash on hand total.

Good day everyone,
My wife and I are beginner newcomers to the racing genre. To give you an idea of how new, I just found out that Racing games are divided broadly between 2 camps: Simulation or Arcade. With that said, we are looking for something easy to hop into, so something in the Arcade camp is probably what we are looking for. We tried Need for Speed Rivals a couple years ago, but struggled to actually get into a race with each other, and were a bit overwhelmed by the open world. Plus it seemed to be a mediocre obvious console-to-PC port.
Dirt 5 is looking like it might tick some of the right boxes: (1) Arcade type gameplay, (2) The ability to select tracks from a menu, and (3) multiplayer. Plus Dirt 5 is on sale. Forza Horizon 4 is also on sale and I bought her a copy about an hour ago, but I don't know if it will be too complicated to connect or master the mechanics of driving. Wreckfest also looks it may be promising, but its not on sale at the moment.
Regarding multiplayer My wife and I both have STEAM accounts, and we both each have fantastic gaming PC's. We don't have controllers though. It looks like Dirt 5 has a splitscreen play, but we would each need a controller for splitscreen play, and we currently have zero controllers. Would we be able to connect together in a lobby hassle free? I have done some searching on this. What I have found so far is allot of threads about CROSS-PLAY not being supported. But this is not our concern since we both have STEAM on PC. I haven't been able to confirm one way or another whether joining together online in the same lobby is a thing on PC/Steam.
Another important aspect of gameplay would be having bot racers in online matches. I am not sure if that's a feature present in Dirt 5 with my research so far.
