2024.04.28 16:03 Anicale-Senpai Is it weird my neighbors set up a camera facing only my backyard?

(Sorry if this is the wrong subreddit to ask. I don't know where else to ask and it's been bugging me.)
They haven't lived here long. They moved in maybe 3-4 months ago. They never had a camera, and we never heard a peep from them.
For layout context: Our houses are about 8 ft apart. Maybe more. And there's a path that we both share to get to the front yards. We have one window that faces each other, and there's no other way into our backyard besides that one path. Their house is slightly back from ours, so their side window can see both our backyard and the side of our house. Our backyards are very secluded, everyone's yards face each other, but there's thicket that blocks entrance into each other's yards, except for this one house next to us. They have a locked fence as well.
My family is starting our garden and we're decorating it as well. About a week ago, I was placing sod on our side of the path, and I happened to look up and see what one of them was watching me. They weren't smart enough to know that opening their blinds partially meant I could see them too.
So I thought that was weird but kept working. Going in and out of the house, I heard footsteps and when I looked in that direction, I didn't see anyone, but I heard that scraping noise shoes make when they abruptly turn. Still thought that was weird, told my dad and he went out to help me. (I like doing stuff alone, which was why he didn't help to begin with.)
I've been seeing their window open lately, despite the fact that the only thing you can see from that window is our house and backyard. Nothing else....
Yesterday, we planted and decorated a majority of our garden and they kept coming out smoking weed and it kept blowing in our direction. At one point, while I was far enough out to see their patio, I saw one of them run out to look at our porch where my mother was sitting. Blew more marijuana and my mother made a comment loud enough for them to hear, about calling the cops about the weed smell, wherever it was coming from.
We woke up this morning, and now they have a camera on their banister facing our backyard and it points directly at our porch and into our house if we have the backdoor open. Is this not weird? Especially considering their recent activity regarding anytime we're outside? It just feels weird. I was hoping these neighbors would be better than the last, who threw parties and trash into our yard. But I think these creeps take the cake.
Like, what is the reason for it? Are they trying to rob us, just be creeps and watch what we do? It's pretty nerve-wracking. Like I can't even enjoy myself because they have a camera pointed directly at us. Not on facing the path, not facing their backyard, only facing us.
TLDR: New neighbors have been watching our house and backyard. From their side window and even their patio. My mother made a comment about the weed smell coming into our backyard. And this morning, we spot a camera facing our backyard and our backdoor. Is this weird?

2024.04.25 00:14 FantasticMeddler Live in neighbor landlord in a duplex/triplex - need advice

Hi,
I need some help navigating a few issues with my landlord. I moved into a triplex with a ground floor studio, a 2nd floor apartment, and a 3rd floor apartment. The landlord lives upstairs and uses the ground floor for their business.
I'm a good tenant, pay my bills on time, have had minimal requests. But the issue is that as our neighbor and our landlord, a lot of boundaries are being crossed and blurred. I have had neighbors and I have had landlords, but combining the two has made a mess of a lot of things.
Is there anything I can do to stop the constant stream of texts and physical no notice discussions?
I think they want to be our friends, and basically tell us what to do at the same time.
We have basically not brought up any issues we are having with the apartment either fwiw. It's just a nonstop stream of one sided complaints.
The general impression I get of our landlord is that she is a bit of a spacey type, who has selective memory and pretends to not remember things we have agreed upon.
I feel cornered in this space and anxious, not how I want to feel in my home. Does anything they are doing constitute violating our right to quiet or violate our lease to allow us to break it?

Here are some of the issues I have been having.
Homegym in the backyard
When we moved in, we disclosed during the application that we have a homegym, with photographs and details of the square footage, materials we have, and the size. The flooring, the canopy, etc. We made it abundantly clear that this was the reason we were choosing their property and that the homegym was a part of that.
Since moving in, the landlord has been incessantly complaining about the homegym size, the amount of items, if I could remove things, that it isn't usable for them. That they don't like it, etc. I am frankly pretty irritated because they don't provide.
We have some emails about the homegym, but it was not formally added into our lease. There are some provisions on not keeping things in the front, breezeway, or common area. But as we have been moving in some extra things have cluttered up the areas, leading to a lot of excessive badgering.
My point of view, and how I have handled this homegym in the past three spaces I have had it. Is that it is my space and that I am generously allowing them to access it. Their point of view seems to be that it is a shared resource (that they have put no money into, or any effort into cleaning or installing or moving around) and that they can incessantly complain about the layout or cleanliness of it (it's outside, it will have dirt and bugs) while simultaneously requesting I remove things like the canopy I have setup.
They are now claiming that the dead dirt I am residing on was their "lawn" and that the mats I have placed are damaging it. I am worried about this situation and them trying to deduct the damage to their lawn (which was dead and is now more dead) when I move out.
Trash
They have not gotten separate bins for each dwelling, and the bins they use are barely sufficient to cover our normal consumption. We have regularly exceeded the trash size, causing our local service to not pick it up. I have been taking out the trash but despite this receive numerous complaints from the landlord.
They seem to be operating under the thought process that they are doing us a favor letting us use their trash bins.
I have suggested firmly that the size is inadequate and we need to request larger sizes, or open our own account. Both suggestions have been met with no action as a larger bin would make it difficult for their customers to access their business on the ground floor, despite that area being specifically for trash.
Noise levels
In our lease, there are multiple clauses around noise, guests, etc. I wanted to move into a quiet place, so I thought this was great and meant they were quiet people. Not so, they have had at least 12 parties multiple days of the week. Sometimes they tell us we are invited, as if this makes up for the disruption to our home.
Both parties work from home and run their business from home, as do we. They have friends, guests, and clients over nearly every day of the week. Their living area is directly above ours.
They have also had a garage door remodeled and installed haphazardly prior to us moving in, it is bolted into the frame of the house, and the garage door opening and closing causing the entire living room we are in to shake. They also enter and exit this garage at least a half a dozen times per day, and when they arrive home and need to bring things upstairs will not leave the door or garage open and open and close it every trip. Leading to at least a half a dozen times they open this door per day.
Communication
Almost no communication has gone through email. Nearly everything is communicated over a group text, which I despise. Which is a long text of them complaining about things they don't like and us saying ok. Or when we step outside they conveniently are also outside and have a verbal discussion about something they want removed or changed.
Privacy
They have a video camera ring type system on the front door, which means they are recording every time we enter or exit, we don't know for how long.
When we are cooking, in the backyard, or entering and exiting, we seem to always "run into them" and there is always some scrutiny or backhanded complaint that comes along with it.
Security
We have had a burglary to our front area, and the camera was helpful. It made me realize they are recording the entire time we enter or exit the unit.

The lease is fairly boilerplate, with a few strange bolted on provisions around things like marijuana smoking in the backyard - which my partner has gotten verbal amendments on.

We have incurred significant financial expenses on this move, and moving again is not something I want to be forced to do, nor is it financially feasible. We went off the good initial conversations with the landlord but it seems we are at the whims of their preferences and feelings. Is there anything we can do or write to get them to back off?

2024.02.23 22:43 Enhance-EELLC Richmond and Hake Daraven Seals Action Brief

Richmond: Seals off the ground a while ago, hake you're late, and smell like marijuana.
Hake Daraven: Medical Sacrament Battle Master Seargant Master Chief Petty Officer! I am your Battle PFC Hake in this operation!
Richmond: How go this operation hake.
Hake Daraven: Just your tiffany here, all your squad from here and the david that is flying their craft.
Richmond: David, that is the AGI?
Hake Daraven: Indeed, that is the David Bot As Per Global Offensive Operations, My Good Bot of My Friend David Flanagan, Noted Lover Of Aeta Bot As David Bot.
Richmond: Doxxnet off, got any opsec at your end?
Hake Daraven: David Net has shown me some media and this appears to be a hostel and base of the ugandan of the somiala with three buildings mid size south and a terrorist compound to the north with two barracks and a road down the middle, which is an expected russian base layout so this information David Net has given me may not be good or encoded. I would recommend your squad use my asset of the Predator RQ-9 with hyperspectral if you can float it, or just go in guns blazing.
Richmond: What is the tactical ETA and any operation.
Hake Daraven: Presumably your squad has fetched some weapons with ACOG so the recommended operation is to land the craft at least 300m away from the main entrance and move on foot with noob tube support at the base doors or the use of a GK112 12-Shot if they got that as part of their loadout when I sent them to the APC bay to fetch their Geoint and presumably their weapons as well, which we may have maybe at least an M4 and Basilisk and also if you had gone to the cooks area mccrystal was sulfur treating an intervention sniper rifle with sulfur there to make it the yakuza child faiths rifle. There are likely 4 of your seals onboard the craft and it is 12:33 am so this is likely to happen as an ambush attack at the base without much alert using the sniper rifle to pick off guards then the GK-112 to take out any foot mobiles remaining, then using the M4 to raid the grounds and the barracks and executing any terrorists with the Basilisk Service Revolver. After the mainly civilian base of the terrorist leader is taken out the troops may get back on the now landing UH-1 300m and egress to the carrier again, where I need my UH-1 without bullet holes because that is my recreation craft you are piloting and a commandeered recreation vehicle cannot be used for an operation which damages it.
Richmond: Got that, so then what do we do if there is heavy resistance?
Hake Daraven: Naw, this is like, ah, somebody's house, but I do have a AC-130 floated your way from S-YFO to somalia over the negev and this can provide air support against any local troops moving on the position. This guy is the leader of the yitvah in the area and we have his phone calls so we need the LEADER ALIVE but these hostages or any civilian taken into account and made safe, and them terrorist males amputate kill beat and neutralize those compliant on 9/11 orders of the yitvah, it is expected you may actually just walk in and take the person who is the Sheik of the palace, bag and tag and take to the south israel gaza base at south gaza where allehandro can find exactly why this guy is causing piracy in the somalian mid waters and any leads or evidence he has on this yitvah going on.
Richmond: Got that, hake, we need to hop.

2024.01.27 05:27 not-Rod-Serling Character/personal conduct/mental health

I'm currently in an uncleared job not affiliated with the government at all, but I want to eventually get a job that requires a DoD secret security clearance. I wouldn't be able to serve in the military, but I'm extremely passionate about serving the United States and defending national security as a civilian. However, as I'm looking thought the SF 86, I have some concerns that I could be denied a clearance when I apply. I have several "definitive" red flags, which I plan to be 100% honest about:
-one-time, experimental edible marijuana consumption over a year ago, which I never intend to consume again
-used a friend's Adderall once 3 years ago bc I wanted to do well on a final in a super difficult class and I thought it would help me concentrate better. I also never intend to do this again
-an at fault car accident also over a year ago, but everything is resolved legally with that, I paid my fines and did a safe driving course, and I haven't had a single traffic infraction since. Not even a speeding ticket.
-relatives that are foreign nationals of a very friendly country (think member of the 5 eyes). I am a sole US citizen from birth.
-multiple years of mental health treatment including several inpatient stays for SH and an ED. These were over 7 years ago when I was a teen, but of course I'm still going to disclose them. I am not diagnosed with any of the specified conditions in question 21.
My main concern is more vague: how other people perceive me and my ability to have strong references for "people I know well." I don't think anyone would question my loyalty/allegiance to the US. I'm a very anxious person. I'm also very socially awkward and quiet. I have a hard time interacting with people and forming friendships; I'm pretty sure I'm on the spectrum but do not have a diagnosis. I'm not "antisocial" in the clinical sense, but I keep to myself a lot and don't really go out since my social battery is very short. I've also had multiple people tell me that they're concerned about how anxious I am and that I'm the most high strung person they've ever met. I've done several dumb things as a result of being so overwhelmed by anxiety, nothing illegal, not a definitive red flag that falls under any other adjudicative guidelines, but definitely stuff that could raise eyebrows under "personal conduct" and my behavior could definitely be described as irrational or bizarre at some points. Sometimes I feel like a tornado of chaos is perpetually swirling around me. I'm not in therapy right now due to recent life changes, but I'm actively seeking it out and I'm going to proactively seek out a psych eval. A lot of my issues could be the result of childhood trauma as well. Sorry for the novel-length post, but I wanted to paint a clear picture. Will seeking& complying with treatment, demonstrating stability and good decision making, and trying to form positive relationships help mitigate this? Am I overthinking things? Is there anything else I should do to help mitigate?
Edit for layout

Thanks to spacepaladin15 for letting us play in his sandbox.
Sorry for the long wait, the end of summer turned into a bunch of BS. Hopefully I can get back to my usual weekend release schedule now. Here's an extra chunky chapter to make up for it, and a link to the Ficnapping chapter Movie Night! Written by reguluspratus of New York Carnival! It's great, and canon! Cept Andre would and does show them Dune before Star Wars
Didn't have an editor, if any bits are fucked up let me know below.

Stirred my coffee. Quadruple espresso. Brewed for utility, not taste. Slugged half of it down, then turned to my monitors. Bottom left screen. Dozens of Firelink threads scrolled by, a whole forum’s worth of new memes. Sprung from one image.
A black and orange armoured suit, engaged in a group hug with 3 adorable aliens.
This is already going better than I hoped.
I allowed myself a smile.

For the first time in… however many days it had been, I woke up feeling okay…
I groaned and pushed myself up into a sitting position as My consciousness bubbled back into being. The familiar smell of wood and alcohol filled my nose as I rubbed sleep from my eyes and looked around. I’d fallen asleep sprawled face down on the sectional couch in the lounge.
The lounge took up most of the first level in one of the A-frame offshoots from the main house. It was a comfy space, with a classic balounge look. Lots of dark wood furniture with over overstuffed red upholstery, arranged casually around the TV or one of the card tables. A bar that had been well stocked until a couple weeks ago stood against the far wall, across the collection of tables and chairs.
I blinked away a window full of startup status alerts that read nominal, and noticed I wasn’t alone.
Sevkan was sitting on the other side of the sectional from me, across the coffee table. Which was littered with tablets, hardcopy books, my doctoral dissertation, and several of the ‘display only’ cybernetic models from the clinic’s waiting room. Including my original cyberspine. Which was a little surreal.
Sev himself hadn’t noticed my ‘re-animation protocols’ returning me to the bleary eyed land of the living. All and I mean all of his attention was focused on the TV. Eyes wide, tail straight, ears set, the whole thing. His expression a mix of cat-like prey fixation and religious epiphany as he watched a team of surgeons butterfly me open from the back in glorious Max-Definition.
“Are you watching the video of my spinal replacement surgery from last year?” I grumbled. Guess my day was starting of very surreal then.
His tailtip bobbed, which was a yes, pretty sure. “It’s amazing! I’ve never even heard of nervlink technology used like this! Do you have any idea the implications that a bionic spine has on your reflexes? Or your fine motor control?” He exclaimed, shifting his head slightly to look directly at me.
He was just in time to catch me using my superior cybernetic coordination to scratch my stubble and ass simultaneously. “I am a harbinger of mankind’s cybernetic perfection.” I intoned with grave sarcasm. He scrunched up a napkin and tossed it at me with an amused whistle.
I let the white bar napkin hit me on the nose and caught it as it fell. “But yeah, I know. I’ve had one for a long time now. Basically I learn physical tasks really fast and I can shift into crappy bullet-time for a few seconds..” I layed the napkin flat on the table and held my hands out above it, palms down.
I relaxed the muscles along my back and sent a command through my nervlink. The world around me slowed to a crawl as the unthrottled speed of my synthetic nervous system screamed information to my brain at fibre optic speed. I lowered my hands to the napkin and folded it into an origami crane with practiced ease. I then returned my hands to their original position. I admired the little handicraft for a moment, then dialed it back to normal. The whole process took maybe half a second. The crane held its shape for about as long, before the napkin’s inherent floppiness reasserted itself and it collapsed.
“Yeah, that works better with paper or cardboard. I can do it with really thin sheet metal too, but that freaks people out. I mostly use the slow-mo during surgery, if something’s going wrong or requires tricky timing. Gives me wicked headaches if I… ” I trailed off as I looked up from the napkin crane to see the empty space where Sev had been.
Where did he-
“Teach me everything you know.” A feral voice hissed into my ear. I yelped and jumped away, toppling off the couch and landing in a heap on the rug.
“Oh, I’m sorry!” Sev squeaked. He jumped off the couch and scurried over to help me up.
“I’m fine, it’s fine!” I stood up and stretched. Loosening up the few natural muscles I still had. “Enthusiasm is good. “I shall instruct you in the Weirding Way, young Muad’Sheeb.” I quoted.
Sev tilted his head and skewed his ears at me. “Is that like, a term for apprentice or something?”
I rubbed my hands together and grinned. “Oh man, I’m showing you guys Dune tonight!”
“Is that like The Martian we watched last night?” He asked. His tail swayed as he picked up on my enthusiasm.
“They’re both set in harsh deserts, but beyond that no, not at all. What did you think of The Martian anyway?”
“I liked it! I was surprised it had a happy ending. Vemnka thought the goofy old space tech was neat, and Dad was convinced it was UN propaganda ‘till we saw the release date in the credits.” His tail was still going as he spoke.
I chuckled at the idea of Kimmich watching Matt Damon grow potatoes in shit and thinking it’s some insane 5-D chess move. “Yeah, that movie’s a hundred years old. Say, where are Mocha Dot’s and Sargent Hardass anyway?” There were 4 spare blankets spread across the couch, including the one I’d slept under.
“Captain.” Insisted Sevkan “My dad is a captain. Twice.”
“...What?”
“He earned the rank of Captain in the Venlil Space Corp, and the rank of captain in the civilian exterminators. Separately.” He responded tersely..
“Right…” I didn’t think much of Exterminators, considering, everything I knew about them, but the Venlil Space Corp had shed blood for us. To achieve that high a rank in both organizations was a lot. Shit, I think we were pretty close to the same age too. Well, I’m a bad example, but still! What kinda JTF super agent did I let in my house?
“Venmka’s in the computer room just upstairs and dad’s in the greenhouse.” Now that he was sure I took his father a little more seriously, he relaxed back into the couch. His attention shifted back to the tv and the surgeons extracting my spine. “Hey, what did they do your old bionic spine after this?”
I pointed at it. It was still sitting on the table after all.
“Wha?” He wheezed. His jaw went slack, gaze shifting between the video, the spine, and his paws. I took the opportunity and bolted for the door.
“Gotta piss, need a shave, see you at breakfastgonnamakewafflesbyeeee!” I dashed up the stairs, barely holding in a cackle.
I made my way through the halls to my bedroom in the top of the central tower. I got dressed. A faded black KMFDM shirt and a pair of cargo pants replaced the grey sweats I’d slept in, and I ducked into the bathroom. I wandered out ten minutes later, bladder empty, teeth brushed, and Van dyke trimmed back to a respectable shape.
Vemnka was next on the list. I wandered back down the stairs and followed the sounds of smashing machinery and trance music to the door of the games room. I pushed my way through the door. The games room was an open space, dominated by gaming pc’s on wheeled desks. Power blocks hung from the ceiling like on spools. The walls, carpet, and ceiling were all coloured matte black, with long lines of neon colour running along in vibrant contrast. At night or with the curtains drawn, it looked really good. The highlights would light up around you dynamically as you moved around the room. It was day though, almost noon, so the overwhelming light of the sun washed everything out.
The most striking thing in the room right now was the little control centre Vemnka had made herself by the window. She’d taken about a half dozen desks and computers and wrapped them around one of the lounge chairs in a semicircle.
She’d angled the whole set-up to have a panoramic view of the compound out the window, and as a result she was facing directly away from me. All I could see of her was the silhouette of her ears sticking up out of her static afro and her tailtip
A Grinchly grin crept up my cheeks. I’m gonna boop one of those ears!
I crept forward, left arm out, finger extended. Expert sneaking skills accumulated through years of tour bus prankery served me well as I closed the distance. “Aw c’mon!” she hissed at the game. Vemnka’s ears jerked side to side as she smacked at her keyboard and hammered the mouse. I paused, waiting untill her digital opponents let off, then made my move.
I pressed the tip of my finger to the back of one of her velvety ears. “Boop!” I chirped.
Vemnka squeaked and snapped her head towards me. “Hey! I’m the sneaky one!”
“There’s some stiff competition around here.” I chuckled. “You playing Chrome Core?” I nodded to three of the screens displaying the now paused game. Two more showed what looked like the venlil version of Avtocad design software mid project, another was running a video about marmalade production, for some reason. The final screen looked like it was just a bunch of open Firelink threads.
“Yeah, I got kinda bored after we finished the movie last night, so I explored your house, except the library, cause the doors won’t open. Then I finished doing that, so I drew up a list of all the valuable salvage on that immolator that crashed! After that I figured we’d probably need something to haul all that stuff around so I used the immolator salvage and a bunch of prefab patterns I got in university to design us a ship!"
I examined the Avtocad program more closely. “You designed a whole space ship out of salvage in less than a day?”
“No, silly!” She whistle-giggled. “I designed a hovering barge in less than a day!” She stood up and passed me a tablet with an itemized list of all the ship’s componants.
“Damn, shipbreaker and ship designer?”
“Shipbreaker…” she said, testing the feel of the word in her mouth. “I like that!”
I scrolled through the list, marveling at all the exotic tech we’d soon be playing with. I peered at her over the top of the tablet. “Sooooo, when this is over, would you be interested in a job?”
“I don’t know if you can afford me!” She beeped.
“You do work like this regularly, I’ll redo my whole budget. What’s with the marmalade, and the Firelink threads?”
“Oh, I want to try the marmalade, have you got any?”
“Yeah, it’s a breakfast thing. Mocha too.”
“Sweet! The threads are from Sergei’s Firelink account. I wanted to check out if people saw that picture he took, and lots did!”
I looked at the screen, it was developing into a regular public scene.
“Yeah, that’s pretty typical for me.”
“Is the relationship speculation typical too?”
“Oh yeah, standard media circuses involving me always have that….” Curiosity teased my… imagination. “What’s the spread?”
“Uhhhh……” She scrolled through the memes and silly fan art for a moment. “Most of them ‘ship’ you and Dad.”
“Really? Kimmich? That surprises me. Coulda sworn it would have been Sev.”
“Nah, they think me and Sev are a thing.” She let out an exaggerated gag. “Besides, I think they’re right.”
I did a double take at her. “Really? I don’t know a thing about him, and he threatened me!”
“He likes gardening, spicy food, building models, and Spring and Tumble.” She rattled off.
I like most of those too. “What’s Spring and Tumble?”
“It’s like Ba Gua Parkour, according to Erich.”
“Ba Gua Parkour…” I echoed. “I know those....”
“Then you’re halfway there!” She slapped me on the ass with her tail, causing me to yelp for the second time that morning.
“I’m gonna go find your dad now.”
With a titter and a saucy little wiggle of her hips she slid back into the chair. “You do that, big guy! Call me when food’s ready!” She unpaused the game as I headed for the greenhouse.
I don’t know if I should be delighted or horrified that shippers are a constant across multiple species… I shook the idea from my head and wandered over to the greenhouse, making a quick detour to grab a joint from the lounge before I entered.
The greenhouse was the largest single room in the house. It was wedge shaped and two floors high. It extended to the end of two of the spurs, and was totally encased in glass. The central area of the second floor was open to let the light through. I hadn’t planned the layout of the greenhouse when I built it, I just filled it as I went. As a result the interior was a dense and chaotic jungle of plantlife.
Wooden garden beds overburdened with 50 kilo pumpkins sat next to advanced hydroponics bays filled with newly sprouted cannabis seedlings. Grape vines and beanstalks I couldnt even find the roots for anymore entwined around everything.
From my vantage point on the second floor, I could see a couple of the small Agricor drones trundling about on their caterpillar treads doing the boringest parts of garden maintenance. Their bright white hulls stood out in the green sea, almost as much as my guest did.
Kimmich was below me, walking between the rows of, to him, exotic alien plants. He looked relaxed as he prowled about, stopping by each strange new piece of produce and examining it. Part of me wanted to sneak up on him, or maybe hurl myself over the railing and land dramatically in front of him.
I barely know him, and this is the first time I’ve ever seen him with his guard down…
I took cover behind a pea covered trellis and zoomed my vision in on Kimmich as he explored unaware of me. He wandered over to the tomato plants. This crop had grown especially well, and so were heavy with fruit the cages bent under their weight. He paused and reached out to give them a feel. He ran his pawpads over the fruit and gave it a quick squeeze before bobbing his tail and moving on.
The next thing to grab his attention was The Sunflower. I called it The Sunflower because Sergei gave me the seed one day, claiming it was lucky, and he had been absolutely right. The thing had grown to be fucking huge. The stalk would have been 3 storeys tall if the massive manhole cover sized flower hadn’t bowed the whole plant over with it’s weight.
Kim ambled right up to the big polloney disk and stuck his snoot right into it. I think he liked it, cause his ears went straight up and his tailtip started flicking back and forth. He nuzzled right into it, then pulled away, his face caked with yellow dust. He licked around his lips, trying to clear the powder off, but that only made it worse. So he brought his hands up and started trying to brsh himself off.
I don’t know what it was, but something about seeing that big battle-scarred bastard trying to clean himself off like a kid with mustard smeared all over him made a part of me deep in my chest flutter.
The sensation scared the hell out of me, I zoomed back out from my view of Kimmich and stared down at the letters on my chest. “The fuck was that?” I asked them, as if they knew any more than I did.
“Vemnka, is that you?” I heard from below. Kim must have heard me speaking. Oh well, no point hiding now.
I stepped out from behind the peas and waved down at the big venlil. “Just me.” I said, as I leaned against the railing.
“How long have you been there?” He asked tersely.
“A couple minutes. You seemed like you were enjoying yourself, and I didn’t want to interrupt.” I replied.
“What do you want?” He asked. Also tersely. Jeez, we’re already doing this?
My shoulders sagged and I let out a groaning sigh. “To say ‘good morning’ and invite you to breakfast? Ugh fuck it.” I pushed off the railing and marched out the second story door onto the deck. I took in a lungful of sweet autumn air and fished through my pockets for a lighter.
Eventually I pulled an old clipper from one of the pockets and brought it up to the tip of the joint between my lips.. I sparked it a few times, but it refused to light. I mumbled a few curses at it and kept trying fruitlessly to conjure fire.
“Here- use mine.” I turned to see Kimmich push his way out onto the deck, an ornately engraved silver lighter in his paw. I raised my eyebrow at the thing. He flicked it open and sparked it. A centimeter long jet of blue fire lept from the end, and he held it out to me. Rather than take the light from his paw, I leaned down and held the tip of my joint against the spear of flame. A couple puffs later the distinct smell of burning cannabis joined the scent of sunflowers in the cool air.
I took a long drag of the joint. I closed my eyes and held the smoke in my lungs for a moment. I opened my mouth and exhaled. Gently it curled out my nose and between my lips, rising like a spirit into the cold air. Delicious cannabinoids soaked into my lungs and slithered their way across the blood brain barrier into my senses. Warmth and chemically imposed contentment washed over me as I turned to smile back at my alien guest. “Thanks Kim.”
The now companionable silence stretched on through a few more drags of the joint, before I decided to break it. “Quite the pair of kids you’ve fathered.”
Kimmich grunted, and stepped up to lean against the railing beside me. It creaked under him. “Yes. I am very proud of them.” Pride swelled in his voice. “I did not father Sevkan, though.”
“Yeah, I know he was adopted. He and Erich bonded over it. He calls you dad, though.” I pointed my joint at him for emphasis. “That’s the most important part.”
“Yes.” He agreed. “It is…”
“Did you pick him up in the same incident that-” I tapped under one of my eyes.
“Yes.”
I took another puff.
“Care to elaborate?” I asked.
“No.”
I sighed. “Fine. Keep your secrets, I guess.” I turned my attention back to the forest.
“What is that you are burning?” Kimmich eventually asked.
“Dried and ground up buds of the Marijuana plant. Mildly psychoactive, and a decent painkiller. It also enhances the senses of hearing and taste, and is an overall mood booster. As long as you don’t smoke too much.” I held the joint out to him. “Want to try?” I had no idea how a venlil would react to weed, but as a scientist and a host, I felt an obligation to offer it. Maybe he’d manage to loosen up a little.
“Is this legal to possess?” He asked, eyeing the smoking paper.
“Most drugs are, unless you’ve got massive stores and intend to distribute them.”
“...Maybe another time.” He said after a moment’s thought.
“See lots of drug smuggling doing Exterminator Captain stuff?”
“Indeed. Most of our behavioral therapy facility is dedicated to rehabilitating drug use and educating captured smugglers in better careers.”
I turned to look right at him. “Really? From what I’ve heard your ‘treatment centres’ tend to resort to frontal lobe mutilation as a blanket problem solving tool.” I spat.
Kimmich looked me up and down, taken aback by the sudden venom “You… disapprove of lobotomies?”
“Fuck yeah I disapprove! First fundamental tenant of medicine is literally ‘First, do no harm.’ and a lobotomy is about as much harm as you can do to a person!” I took a drag and continued. “Hell, if you stuck me in a room alone with another surgeon who admitted to practicing that kind of sapient butchery I’d probably feel ethically obligated to kill them.”
He bobbed his massive tail and replied with a curt, “Good.”
“Good?” I repeated.
“Lobotomies are a barbaric and embarrassing act of performative cruelty used to create compliance through fear. The ‘Predator Disease’ facilities in my juresdiction don’t practice them. Ever.”
It was my turn to give him a reevaluating up and down. “That’s a pretty radical opinion, as far as I know. What changed your mind?”
The big venlil took a steadying breath. His ears and tail going still. “One surprise inspection.”
“Okay, you gotta explain that one, Kapt’n K.”
He growled, but continued. “When I achieved the rank of Captain in the Exterminators, I was granted the ability to inspect the facilities. The first one I entered was, as you put it, a sapient butchery.” He crossed his arms and spat over the railing as the memory stoked life into some dormant rage. “When I confronted the Director and lead surgeon, a Farsul name Carrac, he congratulated me for bring him so many patients. Claimed he’d been able to help so many people get better through my efforts.”
He shuddered at the thought. I took a hesitant step closer, I resisted the impulse to reach out and put my hand on his shoulder for support. I think he understood though. He managed to continue.
“Then he suggested that he could potentially help with Vemnka and Sevkan’s un-preylike responses to danger, so I killed him. After that I used my postition and contacts to oust every surgeon willing to perform lobotomies in Starside and have them replaced. I also sabotaged a number of other predator disease related institutions throughout the city.”
He gave me a wry look. “Starside is known for it’s corruption, I just chose a worthy target.”
I stared at him and slowly brought the last of my joint up to my mouth. I pulled on it till it was just a roach, and flicked it out into the lawn. “Holy shit Kim… I think I’m starting to like you!”
He was taken aback. “Wait….”
“I mean, I’m not wild about you murdering a guy, but I mean, I would have done the exact same thing! C’mon!” I gestured for him to follow me, making sure to snag a handful of the sweetest looking chili’s I could find on the way. “Heroes get special waffles, that’s the rule here on earth.”
He followed after me, eyeing the bright red peppers. “What are waffles?”

The distant rumble of explosions masked the tapping of my talons on the rough hewn wood floor. The deep thump of antimatter explosions, I could feel each one in the hollows of my bones, and the rapid, and thundering rhythm of a 6-pounder barrage inching close to us.
*I pressed forward through the low light of the room ahead of me. It was a hospital ward. It was a dugout bunker. Barely lit by bare incandescent bulbs, hung from wires between bare concrete pillars. Dozens and dozens of bare mattresses on steel bed frames, their maimed occupants moaning in agonized unison. Humans in grey and khaki and red., Venlil in UN blue and orange. Krakotl in royal purple. The mattresses did not care what colour they were dyed.
Faceless nurses in white and red dashed between the beds, tending the wounded. As long as I was still they could not see me. That was a well known human fact. I caught snippets of their strained conversations as they blurred around me. “Not enough painkillers.” “Not enough bandages” “No more antibiotics.”
Nurses always wanted to stop the dye. They could not. It was already seeping up through the floorboards. I had to be careful not to splash it as I moved, they might hear me. The colours swirled and mixed to grey around my ankles as I crept between the beds.
They went on as far as I could see, lined up in rows stretching out into the black forever. An endless recursion of subterranean suffering.
A shell burst against the roof above me. The crack of lead artillery shell against re-enforced concrete knocked streamers of dust from the ceiling. The figure to my left moaned, I turned to look at it.
Sprawled out on the bed before me was a human woman. I think. The skin of her face had been burned. Melted into a patchy pink and yellow mass by the flash of an anti-matter detonation. The wound was unbandaged, and now caked in a layer of dust.
I hesitated, wincing at the thought of the horrible inevitable infection. No one deserved this, not even something as volatile and dangerous as a human. I turned to leave, the knee deep dye sloshing around my knees as I stepped away…. Only to feel something snagged on my wrist.
I looked back, and saw the peeling fingers of the human hand locked around my wrist. My gaze travelled up the arm until it was locked with the terrifying stare of it’s owner. Hey eyes were like pools of white and hazel fire, alive with more rage and hate than I had every seen before.
“Youuuuuuu…”.The creature wheezed. I wretched at the stench of burnt meat that bloomed from her throat. I tried to yank myself away, but her seared fingers held firm.
“Yoooouuu diiiiiid thiiiisss.” It shrieked. High and loud for all to hear.
“No! I had to, I didn’t have a choice!” I slashed at the human’s hand with my talons. The cooked flesh parted under my dull talons with a sickening Slltch and a howl of pain. I skittered back from her in panic, until my back pressed against something cold and metallic. My breath hitched, and I slowly turned my head until I could see my end.
The giant orange and black edifice of the Armoured Predator loomed high over me, dyed in splashes of exquisite indigo.
“THIS IS YOUR FAULT TRESPASSER.” It roared, it’s harsh synthetic voice dripping with contempt.
I didn’t manage a response before its great claws enclosed me.

“Hecate! Hecate! Wake up! Please wake up!”
I gasped and let out a startled squawk as Keetim, one of the young draftees who had survived our harsh landing, shook me awake. I blinked blearily at his indigo silhouette, barely managing to keep my eyelids open.
He had the long range observation camera we’d rescued from the crash site hanging from his neck, and he was covered in gossamer webs. Ugh, if he woke me early to show me high definition pictures of another terrifying insect… I’d put him in charge of the camera hoping it would keep him stable, and he’d taken to it with more enthusiasm than I’d expected.
I stretched and yawned, pulling in a deep lungful of cool humid air. For the first time since we’d landed, I couldn’t smell smoke or burning plastic. The fires we had lit were going out, and the natural smell of the region was starting to reassert itself. Sea spray, rotting leaves, and the fragrant scent of the needle leaved trees that surrounded us.
I sighed out the breath and turned my attention back to Keetim. He was quivering with tension, making the loose webs stuck to his patchy adolescent plumage dance back and forth.
“Good morning, Private Keetim.” I said. I tried for warmth, but days of squatting in the cramped laundry room of a drone operated hot spring had been wearing on me. “What’s troubling you?”
Keetim grabbed me by the arm and started dragging me towards the door. “You you need to come with with me! It’s it’s Haymim!”
I pulled myself free of the boy’s grasp but kept up with him as he left the small room and entered the open courtyard of the hot spring. The whole building was a giant hollow hexagon, built of bronze wood and dark stone. each side dedicated to showers, changing rooms, or storage. In the unroofed centre was the spring itself. A circular hole, bored straight down and divided into three separate sections equally by black rock walls. Fresh water bubbling up from a great hexagonal basalt formation in the centre.
The luxuriant surroundings did little to relax Keetim. “Private, you’re repeating yourself again. You need to take a deep breath and explain what the problem is.”
He slowed to a stop and ran through the breath control exercise I taught him, then spoke.
“Okay, Haymim and Ketra and Jerim were coming back from surveillance at the Armoured Predator's lair when they found a cache of human food in a crate!”
“So?” I Iead on. Humans had a broader diet than the Arxur, but Haymim was basically still a child. He might not be able to tell what was meat based and what wasn’t. Hopefully this was just a little bit of dramatic squawking. We’d only managed to grab one medkit before the Armoured Predator drove us away from the escape pods, we couldn’t afford to waste the emergency stims on food allergies.
“Haymim ate some! And now Gilchim is telling Jerim to torch him!” He keened.
“Shit! Where!?” I squawked. Of course it’s Gilchim. That troublemaking little shit was the only other ‘adult’ on this nightmare of a field trip.
“The parking lot!”
I took off at a full run, desperate prayers for speed trailing from my beak as I went.
The parking lot was small and surrounded by walls of green, like all the roads in this cold jungle. Stood in the middle of it was poor Haymim. The young boy stood over a pile of cans and boxes, his grey baby plumage trembling in terror. The rest of the flock had formed a semicircle around him, standing out of Jerim’s arc of fire.
Good, this is exactly what I wanted my morning to be.
Gilchim, the sneering prick, loomed over poor Jerim: glaring down at him and speaking calmly. “I gave you an order to fire Private, why have you not complied? Do you want a courtmartial when we get off this planet? Because that’s what you’re heading towards. Now fire, before I have to order you a third time.” His voice was smooth and controlled, flavoured with a snide upper class Nishtal accent.
Jerim trembled, the heavy flamer unsteady in his hands. I felt for the poor kid, as the oldest of the draftees he was effectively Gilchim’s direct subordinate, something I had considered a penal assignment before we’d crashed onto this predator infested rock.
I wasn’t going to let this continue. I cleared my throat, and called “Everyone is to stand down!” Into the air.
Everyone’s heads snapped towards me. Jerim, Intala, bless him, kept his trigger discipline.
Gilchim was the first to speak. “Ahh, First Officer, come to reinforce my order? Excellent! This cadet has become taint-aahh!” I shoved my way past the violet coloured jackass and walked over to Haymim.
“Cadet Haymim, show me what you’ve eaten.” I asked gently. The boy’s terrified shaking lessoned. And he fumbled thought the pile of boxes until he found the open one.
“This.” He quietly peeped. “It’s strayu! I keep saying it! But he wont listen!” Tears welled in his eyes as he passed the box to me.
I took the package in my hands. Inside were four sleeves of white squares, one of them torn open. I stuck a talon into the open sleeve and pulled one of them out. It was pale white, and toasted brown around the edges. I examined the package further and found an ingredients list.
Wheat flour, water, salt. I gave Gilchim the side eye and ate the square I was examining. His translator worked as well as mine did. I put the box down and hauled up one of the cans.
Minestrone with golden grain pasta. I checked for ingredients. Human labeling was so thorough, it was fascinating. Vegetables, shaped grains, beans.
“Lieutenant Gilchim, why are you inciting intercrew violence over dried strayu rations and vegetable stew? ” I hissed, narrowing my eyes at the greasy prick.
“I’m just trying to maintain proper unit discipline! What else would you expect me to do if one of our underlings started displaying tainted traits?
His composure faltered as I marched right up to him, close enough that I could smell the expensive cologne that lingered on his feathers. “Like ordering an unauthorized execution over vegetable stew?” I said quietly.
“Hecate, please-” He started.
“First Officer Hecate.” I countered. “And don’t you forget it.” I dismissed him with a wave and rallied the rest of the kids to help me move our new supplies inside.
Haymim looked relieved, but shied away as Jerim approached.. I couldn't blame him. He wordlessly passed me the memory unit of the camera Keetim had already reclaimed from him and took off.
I snapped the memory stick into my pad and reviewed the images as I walked back into the hotspiring. Most of them were blurry shots of a human with green and yellow arms talking to venlil. Taken through windows or at bad angles. Haymim didn’t have Keetim’s knack for shot composition.
The last few images in the folder stopped me in my tracks. They were crystal clear flat angle shots of the painted human and Captain Kimmich.
How could? Why would? WHAT?
Everyone Else: Captain Kimmich is a deadly and capable venlil agent, who always has the mission on his mind.
Kim when no one's looking: Imma bumble bee! nom
Tune in for the next chapter, which will feature: Wallrunning.

2023.09.17 00:32 FallenBelfry Crafting a Believable 1960 - A Journey into Lackadaisy Hayburner and the AU as a Whole Ep. 1: What're You Even Talking About?

Hi there!
If you're reading this, right off the bat, thank you so much. I have no clue how you found my profile - or if you're one of my seven followers, in which case, yay! - but this is the first post of what I aim to make a series. It will cover the historical research I have done when writing my Lackadaisy AU, which is set in St. Louis, Missouri (duh) in the year 1960 and beyond. The first of the two fanfics in the AU, entitled Hayburner, I expect will be completed some time early next year, in or around March, if time and edits permit. I am obviously not doing this for money, and so, real life may happen.
In brief, the fanfic follows 22-year-old Ivy Pepper, on the cusp of graduating from the St. Louis University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in the Summer of 1960. In parallel, it also follows Viktor Vasko, a 41-year-old mob fixer and Ivy's bodyguard and driver, and their emerging romance, which is set against a backdrop of organised crime and the drug trade. It features multiple other parallel plots and characters which cover the main cast from the webcomic and several dozen original characters that exist alongside them in the AU.
As you can imagine, it diverges from the webcomic significantly. Character backgrounds are changed to a great degree to better fit the year 1960 and to make sense in its context. Mitzi May is no longer running liquor, but is in the business that many bootleggers got into following the end of Prohibition in the United States: narcotics. More specifically, cocaine, heroin, and marijuana, all of which were on the rise in the US at the time and were gripping the world of organised crime and the nation in general. Most of the men - save for Calvin and Rocky, as they're too young - are veterans, either of the Second World War or of the Korean War. Race plays a role, too, unlike in the webcomic. With the story set in Missouri in 1960, it is impossible to not address the component that race played in society, both in its legal and less-than-legal halves, and in the minds of the characters. Jim Crow and the "separate but equal" laws are in their fullest effect in the year 1960, and that needed covering, too. And for all this, I have consulted museums, experts, and archives, and have gathered a vast amount of historical information and sources - which I hope to share with you.
And I felt this post series would be interesting, because I aim to cover all the research I have done into the culture and society of the time period and the key elements of it, which I will break down into individual posts. I have aimed to create as authentic of a 1960 as possible, in much the same way that Tracy has done with the webcomic to begin with - but with some notable differences. I hope this post series will be interesting to people who are into historical fiction and historical writing and, it is my hope, useful to younger writers who want to get into the art of historical research.
Here, in brief, is a breakdown of the topics I will cover:
- Culture, both real and invented for the sake of the cats. By this I mean both the very real cultural trappings of the period and St. Louis in 1960 specifically, but also of things like 'what does it mean for a man to be clean-shaven when they're cats?' and the like, and various things I had to make fit. This also includes stuff like art, music, magazines, radio shows, television programming, and so on. I have a lot of archival footage at this point.
- Society, and its mores and ways. The morality of the time was very, very different. What was and wasn't acceptable differed greatly. For example, despite Ivy and Viktor's age gap being socially unacceptable, it is far more acceptable than the fact that she is a white American woman and he is a Slovak immigrant.
- Politics, and their bearing on many of the plot elements of the fic. 1960 was an election year, Kennedy versus Nixon, and Kennedy winning would become the cornerstone of American domestic and foreign policy for a long time to come.
- Roadways and city plans, as in my writing I strive to be as authentic as possible in the layout of St. Louis. America is the nation of the automobile, and they play a prominent role in the story. Viktor is Ivy's driver and many scenes take place in cars which go places. And, if you care to follow the street-names, you'll find the routes all lead to real places down roads which by and away don't exist anymore. And I'll cover how I researched that! Who I had to contact, and what sorts of data I used.
- Environmental design, such as pertains to the buildings, bill-boards, brand names, building layouts and overall feel of the environment. Due to the severe urban decay that St. Louis has undergone in the time since 1960 (which was already well underway at the time), data for this has proven sparse, and so I had to improvise. And I hope to show you how I did so!
- Character designs and character backgrounds, because when designing OCs to fit the world and rewriting character backstories, I had to focus on timelines extensively. It was all too relevant as to what happened when and to who, and how old the characters are. Furthermore, I had to make their backstories believable. I deferred to magical realism exactly twice for the sake of the plot, and I'll talk about that!
- Cars and vehicles, which play a very prominent role. Viktor is a car mechanic and which car who drove is a very good indicator of social standing. I'll also touch upon the mechanics of car repair which come up and how I researched things like car maintenance and wiring manuals to create an authentic setting.
- Race and racial relations, which expand on the comic significantly and add many new things. As I said before, whilst I respect Tracy's decision to not bring race into the webcomic, I thoroughly disagree with it. And I had to address it - 1960 is a year of change in the United States, and nowhere moreso than in racial relations of the time. I had to create a believable system of races for the cats to adhere to, one which was neither prejudicial or offensive but also not invisible, and which permeates every facet of daily life - just like how it did in 1960. Jim Crow and "equal but separate" laws are in full effect. The Daisy Diner has a coloured section, just like any establishment, public space, or means of public transit legally had to at the time. And I'll explain my sources here.
- Cat biology and how their bodies work, because I had to explain a lot of things. Why do they have hair? What do cat babies look like? How to claws work? What are tails for? What about their whiskers? These are all things which the characters would innately know, but we don't, and so it merits a bit of a discussion on worldbuilding which is both expansive and respectful to the source material.
And that's your lot for now! I don't currently have a plan for exactly when I'll post these little makeshift updates. In all honesty, I intended them more as "developer logs" when the fic is released, so people can have a look over my process, but I'll update them when I have sufficient resources! I hope you'll come to enjoy them, and maaaybe get excited for the fanfic itself!
Thank you so much for reading if you got this far, and stay tuned for Episode 2!

2023.09.08 03:10 Exact_Owl8274 Thriving post FF

Just had a message come in that absolutely made my night last night from a member of this community saying they were clean off FF for almost 2 months now. They started about a month after me bc I made a post saying how I did it and they followed the strategy I deployed to a T.
I am 3 months clean in 2 days. I do not think about Feel Free anymore, I do not feel tempted when I see it, I don’t even have the occasional fond memory of the “euphoria” it used to give me. It is almost like it never happened.
In a weird way, bc I lost a year and a half of my life to this beverage including some pretty demoralizing setbacks directly caused by this hardcore habit, my life now is filled with MORE joy and gratitude. Not less.
Addicts or people suffering from addiction often times have this “I hate being sober” mentality. They think that they will NEVER feel as good as they did when they were high. I’m here to tell you that’s wrong.
I can personally say, bc of the hell those things put me through, NOTHING has gave me more satisfaction than regaining a sense of control over my life post FF, and rebuilding a positive sense of self when I wake up every day.
I make more money, I have a better dating life, I am a better person, I am in better health, and I am more spiritual connected BECAUSE I had to overcome the 10-bottle-a-day struggle that was this addiction.. not in spite of it.
Sometimes we have to touch the hot stove to know never to touch it again.
For those of you that haven’t made it to the other side of this thing, there’s still hope. Here’s the basic layout of what I did. I hope it works for you. (It does cost some money, but it’s an investment in your life bc you’ll ultimately save money by not buying anymore of these fucking things!!):
  1. Look up a nearby city, county, or even a state that has banned Kratom (there’s plenty). This way you’ll know there won’t be any near you to buy.
  2. Pick an Airbnb in that city (preferably a scenic spot)
  3. Schedule off Friday and Monday from work. Tell your boss it’s an emergency and don’t take no for an answer.
  4. Have a friend/family member drop you off at the Airbnb. This is important. You need to not have a vehicle with you so you can’t drive anywhere.
  5. Bring marijuana. Look, I know some of you never smoked weed. Ask your doctor if you’re scared of it, and let them tell you that not a single person has ever overdosed on weed. It’ll help with the withdrawals BIG TIME and it’ll help you sleep. If you have failed multiple attempts at beating this thing, weed is extremely mild. What do you have to lose? I’d rather every single one of you turn into a complete stoner than be hooked on these things.
  6. Bring healthy food, junk food, and some coffee.
  7. Bring a journal. You’re gonna be emotional.
  8. Lock yourself in the Airbnb.
  9. Do activities to keep busy. Go on walks if you need. Push ups. Sit ups. Read. I like to freestyle rap so bring music if that helps. Take COLD SHOWERS. And more than anything, spend some time thinking on a page. Aka write out all the thoughts you are having. If you want a journal prompt here’s one you can use:
“What pain in my life have I not been willing to face? What pain am I numbing out by drinking these? What pain are these things creating in my life? Am I willing to face this pain to free myself of this addiction?”
This honestly rewired my relationship to fear of pain in general.
I was TERRIFIED of withdrawals. But once I realized the pain of withdrawals was LESS than the pain of staying on FF, I HAD to change.
I then used pain as my North Star. I purposely added more pain to my life intentionally with rigorous exercise, cold showers, removing other bad habits, doing shit I was afraid of doing, etc… I now feel completely unstoppable. Like I beat the last level of boss in a super difficult video game or something.
  1. Believe in yourself. You can do this.
If you need to message me to vent while you go through this, use my inbox as that space for you.
Now stop waiting. If you have the means to do this, go do it. You won’t regret it.

2023.09.05 16:24 Character_Border_166 Questionable? Prefab

Questionable? Prefab
So I'm working on my Boardwalk remake and instead of the blue canvas modern art thing by one of the spawn locations I built a Greek style Spartan statue. I bring it up is because it's kinda "naked" there aren't any reproductive organs on display obviously, just the layout of muscle. The reason I am asking is because I know a forger was banned for having weed/ Marijuana memorabilia in one of his maps. I'm not trying to get banned for essentially art and the fact that a statue has butt cheeks. Lol, what do y'all think?

2023.08.10 05:23 UnlikelyUkulele Assistance Interpreting a Mystagogus Layout?

Hi all!
I was hoping I could get some thoughts on what certain aspects of this layout mean. I asked the cards to "show me where I am on my magical path right now" and used the lightning bolt layout from the Mystagogus book. There are a lot of cards which I believe probably need to be read together and while I get the flavor of some of them (and others are pretty direct), many are a mystery to me.
The layout was as follows:
  1. Progenitor - Threshold Guardians (I'm blocked, which I've known for a bit)
  2. Endurance - Serpent of Chaos (this was a mystery until my wife walked in the room and said "yeah there's just a lot of chaos in this apartment right now" - we just moved across the country)
  3. Unraveler - Companions (I'd been looking into trying to acquire a familiar or helpful spirit to learn from and I read this as putting the kibosh on that)
  4. Partnership - Akh (I guess I'm making progress? I don't really know)
  5. Hearth - East Gate (change coming soon)
  6. West Gate - Parasite (in a reading six months ago, this was the East Gate)
  7. North Gate - Four Creatures (no idea)
  8. Fate Weavers - Foundation Stone (establishing roots magically or mundane - the latter being because our current apartment is temporary after we moved across the country and we're looking for our home to have/raise kids in. This was also the South Gate in the reading six months ago)
  9. The Path - Underworld (no idea what this means)
  10. The Binder - The Path (not moving forward for now, I imagine also read with the underworld card in the path spot but not sure how they interact)
  11. The Gift - The Voice of Untruth (I think this refers to a marijuana habit, but am not clear)
  12. Underworld - Silence (I can understand the silence card, but not how it is the adversary of the situation, perhaps a challenge to do nothing? I also think this is probably read with the Path and potentially the Binder)
  13. Dreams - Magic (magic happening in my dreams I imagine)
  14. Inner Worlds - Hearth (help finding a home is flowing from the inner worlds, read in combination with the Hearth position, and then the East Gate I think)
  15. Daimon - Stargazers/fellowship (I think this is suggesting either that I spend time making friends and becoming closer with in laws or that I should learn astrology, though I'm not sure how the latter would impact any of this if I'm blocked now)
  16. Danger - Endurance (I read this two ways. First, that it would be a mistake to push forward notwithstanding the block, and second that the chaos from the endurance position should not be endured overlong and we should sort things out in the apartment. We're getting settled but there's still loads of boxes, etc.)
  17. East Gate - Fate Weavers ("When this card appears in the near or distant future positions then it tells of fate development, an expansion of life, and a coming-together of forces to help you along your path. The influence of these planetary powers will flow around you in a helpful way." I think this is read along with the foundation card, establishing my foundation either in my life or magically?)
  18. South Gate - Ancient One (No idea. Maybe I come into contact with such a being, or my wife becomes a mother? The latter feels like it wouldn't be responsive to a question about my magical path but I've no idea)
I suspect positions 2 and 16 are read together, as are positions 5, 8, 14, and 17, and then 9, 10, and 12.
My overall take is that I'm blocked for now, shouldn't try to push through, and I'm getting help finding a home and perhaps a magical foundation in the near future. I knew I was blocked as of 6 months ago, so this isn't a huge surprise though I was hoping it was done.
A lot of the other details are lost on me though, particularly the underworld card and position, the stargazers in the Daimon position, and the East and South Gates. Someone recently commented that the Mystagogus deck does not have "less heavy" words for things, so its vocab all appears really heavy even if it isn't necessarily.
Any thoughts?

Explains missing persons database. In this case Alissa DOB incorrect in the initial written report, thus entered to NCIC database. Corrected later. Accuracy matters. If the missing person is involved in an incident involving police, the DOB will match when run through NCIC.
Explains missing person procedure. Interviews of family and friends to establish life pattern and determine what is motivating the disappearance. Whether runaway or mental issues or nefarious. This wasn't done in 2001 when Alissa was reported. If he had been investigator at that time he would've done it. He was first assigned and reviewed case file in December 2008.
Letter exhibit. MT to sgt speaks of trying to trace California call
Re Alissa runaway note, it was given to police in 2008 not initially.
No hits in databases of Alissa since missing, no use of ss#.
Sarah was contact on case at the time he was assigned. First met MT in 2008 when visiting Turney house to investigate. Turneys had moved out. Only a 2ftx2ft plastic tub of A belongings remained. MT in 2008? provided 2 surveillance videos-argument with John L and the couch clip with guy from work. What they had asked for was video of the day she disappeared to see what she was wearing etc. Never given that. (Camera angles of interior and exterior would've showed her enteleave) Not given audio from California call. A neighborhood canvas (this is 7yrs later from missing date) but not invited into MT home. MT said he wanted resolution by November or he would sue. Also a canvas of the neighborhood she lived in before.
Jury excused for lunch
Council issues
Prosection seems unprepared for issues judge needs to review.
Court temporarily adjourn
Court council and judge reconvene without jury and witness.
Council addresses issues
Regarding 3 audio clips from a video where MT while in custody on federal charges invoked his right to remain silence when asked about Alissa. Defense position is that this is using his silence against him. Re video clip where MT is asked about SA, defense maintains it's hearsay as they are asking him about rumors. Re clip where MT is asked about why he didn't provide requested surveillance of the the day Alissa went missing, defense said they never received. Judge says for them to watch now, defense has objections as MT answer is cut off in the video they watch. Prosection says defense were provided the whole video in discovery, and to pull it up. Rulings. Judge sustains defense objection to silence clip. Judge finds clip of surveillance tape question to MT admissable. Clip of SA question to MT who denies it, judge finds admissable.
New issue Re phone call between Alissa and her Calli aunt Lynette, defense objects, prosection argues the subject of the relationship of her father specifically her aunt assuring 'you can always call me' should be admissable. Seized audio and video tapes have no time and date stamps. Defense argues it's prejudicial as Alissa's boyfriend's race is brought up jokingly. Judge rules inadmissible and said will consider later admissable if the time of call can be verified to be around disappearance time.
Court breaks for lunch
Court resumes
Direct continues of witness Stuart Somershoe
Interviewed 200+ person's during Alissa's case, family, friends, classmates, anyone who ever knew her
Interview of Aunt in California unproductive.
2008 Search warrant on current and previous address of MT. The house where she disappeared at least 2 other families had resided since. Searched for evidence of a crime. Cadaver dogs through backyard.
Seized 500+ audio tapes, 500+ VHS, documents, computers. No audio found of California call. Seized phone records MT aquired from 'Quest" show the call in question on May 24 at 5:02am
For the most part there was no date and timestamp on tapes, but none were found with video on them of Alissa as described the day she went missing (May 17, 2001) and none were marked by MT as "the day my daughter went missing"
No surveillance cameras found in search of old house. (Idk if this means installed or in general?)
Witness is shown video w/o audio of the aftermath of A & JL fight. Camera setting alternates views of garage, and a lens viewing the couch through vent slats. Witness verifies it was received when investigators asked for Alissa last seen day. Also received was the couch makeout tape, mentioned but not played for court. MT had not dated these vhs tapes.
Exhibit Alissa's report card from 2 school years in Barry Goldwater HS prior to missing. 12/98 -5/99 (A,B,C grade range) and 12/99 - 5/00 (B,C,D grade range)
Exhibit bank statement found in search of house, showing her as the primary/only account holder, amount $1,800+. A few months later the full amount transfered to Sarah's account. In April 2001, MT account transferred $300 to Alissa's account. MT told investigators he left her account open a few months to see if she would use it, then didn't want her to have access any longer and then closed it.
(Prosection questioning is all over, circling back to random subjects)
Exhibit Letter from MT to school. Read aloud by witness. Letter regarded Alissa being groped by a male student at the instruction of a male teacher, and separate issue of being called gay by other students. MT goes onto write she has ADD. But under his instruction, and help with homework she was making good grades and doing well at first job at Jack in the Box. However having a job and the stress of a temperamental boyfriend disrupted her sleep worsening her ADD. Long letter... Writes of former CPS investigation at aunts request. Alissa would often say you're abusing me when he disciplined, and others misunderstood these words. She wanted to visit her aunt in California and he said she could if she stayed away from marijuana, followed his rules, and she became angry. In this mindset she ran away. Later got a phone call from Alissa saying she left because of his rules and her emotional abusive boyfriend. By the time he realized he could've dialed*69 someone else had called. He's contacted phone company for area code. End exhibit.
Prosection breaks down parts of letter with witness. MT writes he left home between 12pm and 1pm and return home after picking up Sarah around 5. Alissa was gone. MT watched all 8 hrs of security but didn't see her. So is it logical she left a note saying she was leaving, yet snuck out avoiding cameras. In letter MT claims a black suitcase missing.
1:09pm a 7min call to A cellphone from MT phone. Is a 7 minute voicemail possible, witness is unsure but maybe. Other 1min calls that day to her phone from his beginning around 10am ending in evening.
In may 2000 Alissa lived with 2 brothers John and James
Exhibit. Parental custodian and child agreement to give Mike Jr temporary custody of Alissa. Includes bullet points of reasons not related to why she is leaving, this list includes Sabuse.
A later Revocation of the agreement is shown for a moment.
Typed agreement dated July 1999 regarded a birthday party she was going to and rules she agreed to including who cannot be there.
Another similar typed contract July 1999 between MT and birthday party parent in charge.
Asked about homicide investigation procedures when no body is found. Witness said patterns determine if missing are alive, and when determined not alive they investigate why.
Afternoon recess
Prosection resumes questioning
Re phone number A "called" from, was from payphone to landline, same landline that recorder was attached to.
Exhibit phone bill from prior month showed that when*69 was used, it shows on the phone bill. Prosection points that no *69 attempt was shown on the date of Alissa call from California.
MT claims 2 men of killing A in some documents recovered by SWarrant. Gary morseti (died 87 prior to missing) Charles Parsons (died 93 prior to missing). Indicted the 2 men had been hired by IBEW because of a dispute he had with the union, Alissa killed and dumped in California.
Conversation turns to bodies of missing found and how these are matched. In this case a number of identified remains were compared to Alissa's data. DNA has been collected from Alissa's siblings and bio father.
Prosection is moving very slow with questioning. Long minutes of pauses.
Questions about MT past employment as Maricopa County sheriff and PI experience.
In witness experience runaway cases are resolved in days to weeks. Runaways rarely leave notes.
Another extreme pause. Defense wants to approach off record. Baliff playing on his phone.
About former exhibit 100. Two videos of the argument with John Laackmen. One was provided by MT and one was found during the search warrant execution.
Cross by Atty Hicks
MT was asked in a primetime live segment why he didn't keep the tapes and the prosection (i didn't see this exhibit) cut off the rest of his answer in which MT said was offered and investigators refused because she was a runaway.
Defense narrates questioning about note and speaks of the 300$ mentioned. 2 days before disappearance she deposited a 200+ check and withdrew just over 200.
Defense says and pauses for agreement, Sometimes runaways leave and something happens to them like sex trafficking. Profiles of these runaway are same as defense has been laying foundation about alissa, bad grades, mental health, drugs etc
Defense speaks of and shows witness exhibit of May 15 banking transaction, deposited 229 withdraw 200. Witness doesn't see this on the exhibit. Defense seems rattled, looks fire herself then says he has reviewed banking and he would've seen it on another statement date. Witness said no. Defense says MT was told if he closed her account she would desperately come back. Witness said yes that's what MT said on the show.
Defense talks of her bad grades and skipping school. Drinking, experimenting with shrooms.
Prosection objects hearsay, approach bench
Defense rewords, says in friends interviews it was understood she used marijuana which was illegal. Defense stresses the county prosecuted marijuana, and where would Alissa be getting marijuana. Insinuating drug dealers.
Re sw of house. Defense stresses nothing indicating death was found. Re car, nothing bad found (Note wasn't this a different car in 2009?)
Re surveillance. Defense narrates and asks agreement about how old these devices were and what was on them. No tape from disappearance day but also no tape from every single day.
Re phone recordings. Defense says multiple landlines in homes at that time. No evidence recording was targeted to Alissa. Defense ask if he recalls MT on a call and A picked up another line. More than one phone at that time obviously. So no way of knowing what phone was answered in the call from California or that there was multiple recording systems. Sometimes tapes would just end mid call. MT has never stated if the California call was recorded. Recording systems were impounded, detective doesn't know how they work
Re detective interview with James half brother

2 Plays (3 & 4 Players)
Taiki Shinzawa is a Japanese game designer who puts out very interesting stuff. Frequently, he takes a simple concept like trick taking or ladder climbing and gives it a novel twist. He’s done this with games like Ghosts of Christmas, 9 Lives, and Maskmen; and now he’s applied a similar formula to the auction genre with Allplay’s new release, Big Top.
Big Top is all about using your precious coins to bid on and gain attraction cards. These attractions will earn you points and put you in contention for the victory, but not straight away. After you win an auction for a card, it is then placed in front of you — providing you with a new objective of covering all the spaces with your coins. Once you cover all the spaces, then you can reclaim your coins and set the card aside into your score pile. But the only way you can cover a space is by bidding that exact amount in a future auction. It should be noted here that you don’t have to win that future auction, you merely have to make that exact bid.
It is a rather simple and standard auction game where the economy is closed, bidding goes around the table until everybody but one person passes, and players take turns auctioning off a card from their hand and receiving the winning bid (unless they buy the card themself). But the attraction cards and their incentivized bid amounts do all the heavy lifting to make this a refreshing filler game.
Do you bid 9 bucks just to cover up that last space on your attraction? And what if the card that is up for auction is one you don’t even care about? What if everybody else passes and sticks you with the bill? Money can be hard to come by when you only earn during your auctioneer turns, and doubly so if you want to buy the cards in your hand.
More clever moments can be found in the other subtle rules at play:
  • When a player makes a specific bid that matches a space on the card that is up for auction, then a coin from the bank immediately covers that space, thus making the card easier to complete and more valuable to the players.
  • You have the flexibility to spend the coins that are currently tied up in your in-progress attractions (if you desperately want to win an auction), but you’ll make it that much harder on yourself to complete those cards if you keep wiping them clean
  • Many cards offer more than just points — some have end-game point goals, others have one-time bonuses like covering spaces on your other cards, and some come with ever-important stars. A player needs at least 1 star in order to qualify for victory, and stars can be surprisingly tricky to earn when everybody is competing for bonus points for having the most stars.
As the draw pile diminishes, the pressure piles on for players to finish their attractions. Among the bottom 5 cards of this attraction deck, an immediate game-ending card is buried. If you’re not careful, it’ll catch you long before you’re ready.
For my tastes, Shinzawa and Allplay have conjured another small-box spectacle in Big Top.

Hallertau

1 Play (4 Players)
Playing an Uwe Rosenberg game is like wrapping oneself in a warm, soft blanket — it’s familiar and cozy.
Following in the legendary footsteps of Agricola, A Feast for Odin, Le Havre, and more, Hallertau is a medium-heavy Euro game ripe with worker placement, farming, and resource management. Here, players are in nineteenth century, hop-producing Germany competing to increase the wealth and prestige of their humble village, Hallertau.
The main focus of the game is in growing crops and improving your workshops. As you plant and harvest crops, your fields will drop down in their potency making them less productive in future rounds. Yet you can fallow fields (leave them alone for a round) to help them become more fertile; or you can simply lunge for fertilizers actions own the worker placement board.
As you slide your workshops up their tracks, spending your hard-earned resources to do so, a large cottage tile will follow that increases the number of workers you can use in a round. Eventually, these upgraded workshops will get you into point-scoring territory where the bulk of your points will likely come from. But for those who really wish to race up these tracks, you’ll be forced to deal with boulders which require tools to push them out of the way.
But of course, Uwe couldn’t resist the opportunity to cram the game with loads of cards and potential card combos. For being a wide, open game with many possibilities to pursue, the cards offer strong incentives to chase specific strategies.
The bulk of your interaction comes from the worker placement board, where many actions abound yet grow in cost as more players go there. The first person to use the action spends 1 worker. The next person spends two. The next person spends three. You’ll constantly find yourself adapting to the changing board state as you try to get the most out of your workers. It’s a great feature that keeps you on your toes while you try to execute on long-term goals and strategies.
By weaving together this system of crop rotation, workshop sliding, card comboing, and worker placement, Uwe proves once more why he is a master of this genre.
As much as I thoroughly enjoyed Hallertau, far mare than most Eurogames, it still merely scratches the same itch as Uwe’s other classics. I only ever need a blanket when I’m cold, and it’s hard to justify collecting an entire closet of blankets when I always reach for my favorite of the bunch. But I’ll happily embrace this blanket any time the opportunity lands in my lap.

My City: Roll & Build

12 Plays (2 Players)
Review copy provided by the Publisher
Alright, this one is going to be less of a first impression and more of a full review. That’s because I didn’t just dip my toes in My City: Roll & Build. I played through all of it — every single episode and chapter of this legacy-esque roll & write. And I did it all in less than 2 weeks. Yes, that is a very good sign for a game.
Those who have been following my blog for a few years, or who simply went back and read through the old ones, know that I’m a huge champion of the original My City board game. I said it then and I’ll say it again: My City is the best polyomino and best legacy game ever made. Its the best polyomino game because of how it prods you to plan out your city with a preset supply of uniquely shaped tiles, and then it torments you each and every turn by forcing you to place these tiles in an inconvenient order dictated by the bingo-style deck of cards. In no other polyomino game have I found the tile arrangement decisions to be more deliciously agonizing. On top of that, each episode riffs on the concept with brilliant little tweaks to the rules or objectives that result in dramatically different incentives and strategies — keeping this low-interaction experience fresh and exciting.
My City is the best legacy game not because it has an immersive branching story or dramatic plot twists, rather it simply gets out of its own way and lets the act of play be the star of the show. No other legacy game that I’ve encountered has been as smooth, approachable, and agile as My City. One of the great weaknesses of this genre is the fact that many legacy games get bogged down under layers of added rules and fiddliness — the core experience starts to feel less like fun and more like work over time. My City never loses its addictive, quick-to-jump-into quality. It never feels like a chore to revisit or a long-term commitment standing in the way of other gaming opportunities. In fact, it was one of the easiest games for this tired parent to get to the table after the kids are in bed.
Needless to say, I was ready to embrace more of that My City goodness when Roll & Build arrived on our doorstep. What new concepts and challenges has the good doctor cooked up in this polyomino universe? The three-year wait for a spin-off or sequel has all led to this… well, this and My Island (a full-fledged sequel coming later this year). But I was certainly eager to see what 12 more episodes with a dice-chucking, pad writing twist would provide.
If I had shared my early impressions of My City: Roll & Build after the first episode, or heck, even the first chapter (episodes 1 through 3), then it would have been a reaction of mild amusement mixed with mild disappointment. Where Reiner set out to make an approachable legacy game in My City, it seems that he intended for My City: Roll & Build to be the training wheels for its big sibling. At least that is how the initial episodes play out.
Episode 1 features a map that is nearly identical to the one you find find in the larger board game, only with even more of the strategy stripped out. In the starting episode, all you are trying to do is cover all the rocks and empty spaces. Connections or adjacency between different types of building doesn’t matter at all. This proves to be a much less interesting version of My City, but it’s over in the blink of an eye and the dice rolling brings its own bit of novelty, so I can’t fault the game for offering a quick tutorial episode. Granted, this is exactly how Episode 1 of My City is played, but Roll & Build makes it feel even more trivial by removing the preset tile shapes and substituting them with randomized dice rolls where probability replaces planning. It also doesn’t help that we are coming in as My City veterans who are then forced back into the tutorial.
Episode 2 immediately feels like a huge improvement simply by making building adjacency matter (scoring points for your largest group of each building type), yet it brings another worry that continues on… all of Chapter 1’s objectives and episodic additions are the exact same between My City and My City: Roll & Build. The same is true for Chapter 2. It is only in the second half of the campaign, especially the 4th chapter, where things really start to diverge from the board game.
So the fun of My City: Roll & Build is initially overshadowed by the feeling of Reiner playing it perhaps too safe, particularly for anyone who already played My City. Admittedly, that’s not as bad as it sounds thanks to several factors:
  • It’s been roughly 3 years since we played through the original My City. That’s more than enough time for us to forget the progression of the campaign and enjoy it anew in Roll & Build.
  • While the general map layout is the same between both games, there’s something to be said for “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Anybody who has played enough My City would likely agree that the map is perfect… Perfect in how the intentional arrangement of trees, rocks, and obstacles make no two areas of the map feel alike.
  • Although the campaign progresses through the same beats in the early episodes, the feel of the game is different enough thanks to the dice rolling and pad drawing. The dice, although far from the most premium dice on my shelf, are surprisingly fun to roll — two of the dice link up to form one single polyomino shape, the other die shows one of three building types. Drawing these building shapes and types onto your map brings its own inherent pleasure — where you get all the satisfaction of drawing out a city with none of the shame of being a poor artist.
  • As you play through the early episodes, you gain a feel for the probabilities of each building shape that can possibly be rolled. As you catch on to this trend and cadence, you’ll improve your city planning in later episodes yet still be surprised and delighted (or frustrated) by unlikely dice results, which in turn fosters an emotional investment from the players.
  • Where each episode requires an entirely new sheet, this allows Reiner to play with the features on the map — adding rocks here, removing trees there, re-routing rivers, and so on. So although you are not adding permanent changes to your map like in My City, the shifting landscape still keeps you on your toes from one episode to the next as the overall legacy rules and objectives evolve.
  • Rather than losing one point for not constructing a building, you fill in a bubble on a negative point track which quickly scales up — jumping by one then two then three point intervals. Skipping your first or second building isn’t nearly as painful as skipping your fourth or sixth. Once you skip six buildings, you’ll max out at a negative 10 point penalty and be unable to skip any more buildings (after that you’ll either have to build it or quit for the episode).
  • The late-stage feeling of push-your-luck is heightened because no particular building shape or type is ever depleted. There’s always a chance that the next roll is exactly what you need… So do you keep pushing for perfection, or do you give up and move on?
So although My City: Roll & Build seemingly starts off on too-familiar ground for those who want something entirely new, the only episode that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy was the first one due to its tutorial-like feel. Beyond that, the solid foundation combined with all of the subtle twists to the formula added up to a delightful roll and write campaign. For $20 or less, you absolutely get your money’s worth here. Anybody that is a fan of the original My City will find much to appreciate in this box, especially if it’s been long enough for you to rediscover its clever core.
Those who weren’t able to try My City for various reasons, this spinoff certainly lowers the barrier to entry. The game is cheaper, the box is smaller, the player count ranges from 1-6 (rather than 2-4), the episode rules are even easier to keep track of because it is all right there on your sheet, and the competitive legacy elements are less in-your-face for those players who value the major campaign competition above the minor episode victories.
As a gamer who is generally tired of this crowded genre, any roll and write that gets me to play it a dozen times in under 2 weeks is an absolute triumph. The alluring campaign variety and clever city building challenge kept us hooked on the experience all the way to the epic, high-stakes climax. While those who want something wildly different from My City will have to wait until My Island hits shelves later this year, My City: Roll & Build still lives up to its predecessor’s high standard by becoming my favorite game in this roll and write genre.

Yokohama

https://preview.redd.it/3mziwc71p36b1.png?width=429&format=png&auto=webp&s=4a06fe1be4933f7876d7a6a349b690a9f0c1e15d
2 Plays (3 and 4 Players)
I’ve now tried Yokohama twice — once in 2020 and another time more recently. Yet on both occasions, I failed to write about the game before the details quickly faded. It has now been nearly a month since my last play of the game, and I can’t recall any of the specific tile names or resource types without cheating and looking up images online. But what I can recall is a very similar experience between my first and second play.
In both cases, I started out feeling dread. Dread at the massive splay of tiles and icons that reached far and wide, and the obviously many rules that I needed to learn (and later relearn). But as the teach transitioned into the play, my dread quickly melted away as I discovered a satisfying challenge to dig into.
Yokohama has a bit of that Istanbul Eurogame vibe in that you are moving your main pawn across various unique tiles and deciding which ones to land on and activate. Furthermore, you are leaving a trail of smaller pieces to follow or pick up along the way.
With Yokohama, you are only allowed to move along the tiles that contain your cubes, and you can only put out two or three cubes each turn (onto the same tile or different tiles, respectively). The catch is that you want the tile you stop on to have as many of your cubes as possible, as this will make that triggered action all the stronger. Yet this is further complicated by the fact that opponent pawns are getting in your way, and dropping a cube on or passing through their current location will require you to pay them money as a sort of apology for stepping on their toes.
Everything else here is fairly standard Eurogame stuff. Collect a bunch of different types of resources, and use them in various ways to score points while wisely managing your money. The fact that these elements are all a bit fuzzy a few weeks after my play only serves to highlight their generic application. But in the case of Yokohama, the core mechanism of plopping down cubes and planning your route is all that the game needs to stand out and feel worthwhile. It’s refreshing, interactive, tight, and rewarding. While I don’t necessarily feel the urge to add Yokohama to my collection, it’s one of the few Eurogames not in my collection that I’ll happily play any time somebody suggests it. Hopefully I’ll remember enough to skip the 30-minute teach next time.

Earth

1 Play (3 Players)
Earth. In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, oftentimes it helps to unplug and get away from it all. Slowdown, disconnect from the world, and reconnect with Mother Nature. No other word sounds as natural, refreshing, or rejuvenating as the word Earth. Ironic, then, that the game Earth evokes the opposite feelings.
Much like our modern, screen-infested, notification-intrusive society, Earth is a game that sees you endlessly doom scrolling through an ever-growing tableau of pinging icons and bonuses. Every time a colored prize pops, a drop of dopamine hits the brain with a splash, and in Earth there’s enough drips to form a brainstorm.
The reason for this is all thanks to the core premise of the design — select one of four possible actions on your turn, and trigger the effect for yourself and everyone else at the table. Although you indeed get a stronger benefit from the main action when it’s technically your turn, there’s never really a moment where it isn’t your turn. In addition to triggering the action’s core effect for everyone, the chosen color will also trigger all of the card actions in everyone’s tableaus that match that color.
So while there is a formal action token that gets passed around for the clockwise player to choose which color pops next, the actual experience of playing Earth is more akin to a fleet of caffeinated droids in a tableau assembly line. The light flashes green or blue or orange or yellow, and off you all go — heads tilting, necks swiveling, lenses scanning, brains computing, and arms waving. Some cubes here for points — bleep — some face-up cards there for points — bloop — some tokens here for points — blorp — some face-down cards there for points — blop.
There’s no time to stop and smell the roses under this relentless firehose of activations and triggers. What was I actually planting into my island tableau? I couldn’t tell you. Some mushrooms and trees, I think. What was I feeling while playing the game? I couldn’t tell you. There’s no space for emotions in a game that is packed to the gills with calculations and dopamine rushes. Was I enjoying myself? I believe so. There honestly wasn’t any chance to consider it during play, but in hindsight I recall the feeling of pride that a robot has over its meticulously-arranged work station.
And if robots can feel pride, then surely they can also feel irritation. Particularly, irritation at being interrupted from their all-important work. This happened every time I remembered that the fauna board existed. This public objective board consists of in-game and end-game goals — text-heavy cards with obnoxiously specific yet easily forgettable requirements. Things like: have 6 or more cards with 3 or less sprout spaces, or have 7 or more cards with 2 or less growth potential, and so on. I’m not sure which was more grating… reading the entire card multiple times to understand and remember its objective (only to forget it seconds later), or slamming the brakes on the game’s break-neck pace to tally my cards that meet the criteria. The competitive interaction that this fauna board brings is so imperceptible that I honestly believe the game would have been better off canning this board entirely. Don’t get me wrong, the points to gain on this board are significant, but it merely serves as a fiddly speed bump to the game’s tempo.
And what a tempo it is. While Earth obviously borrows liberally from genre titans like Terraforming Mars, Ark Nova, and particularly Wingspan, it manages to best them all in terms of game length and downtime. The bonuses per second (BPS) is at an all-time high here. If deck-digging, engine-building, bonus-popping point salads are the marijuana of modern board games, then Earth is straight up cocaine.
After all, the points are to be found in every nook and cranny of the design. Points for your sprout cubes, points for your trunk towers, points for your planted cards, points for your composted (tucked) cards, points from your private terrain objectives, points from your public fauna objectives… the totals add up into the hundreds once you start tallying everything. Yet even after raking in all those scrumptious points, part of me is still left wondering what was the point? As a hobbyist who gravitates to a more methodical, old-school, shared board style of gaming, I’m having a hard time finding the point needle in this haystack of 200 points that I managed to score.
Perhaps I’m looking for something that isn’t even there. I’m fruitlessly trying to slow down and soak in the scenery of gaming with friends, when Earth simply wants to flood my senses with as many spinning cogs as possible.
It seems that if one wishes to embrace Earth, they must unleash their inner, mechanized cyber-self.

Inside Job

4 Plays (4 & 5 Players)
Review copy provided by the Publisher
After taking the world by storm with cooperative trick-takers The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine and The Crew: Mission Deep Sea, publisher Kosmos is aiming to reach the same crowd with the newly released Inside Job. Although this game is not from the same designer, it does share much in common. Specifically, you are cooperating together to complete missions within the restrictions of a trick-taking game. But Inside Job takes things in a different direction by throwing a hidden traitor into the mix.
In addition to dealing out a fairly standard deck of cards (4 suits, values ranging from 1-13), you’ll also deal out hidden identity cards. One player will become the traitorous Insider, while everyone else is on team Agents. The agents are trying to cooperate and complete enough missions to collectively win the game, while the Insider is trying to win enough intel tokens to claim an immediate solo victory. If neither of those things happen after a set amount of tricks, then players will cast their votes and try to catch the insider with majority votes.
Inside Job walks an impressively fine balance between all of these hidden roles and competing objectives with the help of trick-taking. Every player starts out with one intel token, and they earn another one each time they win a trick. You can even prove your innocence as an agent by earning enough intel tokens to reach the Insider victory threshold and then revealing your innocent identity. But that is quite hard to accomplish. More often, you’ll have to prove your innocence by the way in which you contribute to each mission’s success. Sabotage one too many missions, and you may start hearing traitorous accusations thrown your way.
Whoever wins a trick not only collects an intel token, but they also start the next trick by drawing two mission cards from the pile and selecting one to be that trick’s mission. The card will display two things: a trump suit and a mission objective. These objectives are things like: “The last card must win the trick” or “The first card must be the lowest number played” or “The first and third cards must be the same suit” or “All cards played must be odd numbers” and so on. Some are easier than others, especially when you all have a full hand of cards.
As classic trick taking goes, you must follow the lead suit if possible. If you don’t have the lead suit, then you can play any card including the trump suit. But the two little wrinkles that really elevate Inside Job are the following:
  • The Insider doesn’t have to follow suit, ever. Of course, if they aren’t careful about it then the Agents will catch them in their lies when they break from suit and then play that color later.
  • Players can wager an intel token on top of their card (when played) to make it trump suit. This can be a way to bend the rules and succeed in winning a trick or completing a mission, but it’s also risky. It’s possible that multiple cards of the same value are played as trump suit (when intel tokens are wagered) and the last card played breaks the tie and wins the trick. Even worse, the player who wins the trick takes all the intel tokens that were wagered plus a victory token from the supply. If that person just so happens to be the insider, then you’ve just handed them an easy victory.
Despite the thousands of offerings in this genre, designer Tanner Simmons successfully proves, like many others before him, that trick-taking has yet more to offer. The trick taking manages to be a perfect fit for hidden roles and social deduction thanks to the ability to claim innocence in a sabotaged mission due to the restrictions of your hidden hand of cards. Where many trick-taking games will see your teammates cursing you for not performing up to their high standards, Inside Job transforms that experience from shame to game by replacing disappointment with suspicion. Inside Job makes the most of its combination of mechanisms, and it takes things even further with optional advanced modules, identities, and missions. I’m excited to see where those lead.

Pollen

https://preview.redd.it/i6stt617p36b1.png?width=379&format=png&auto=webp&s=5c5bf2a7ad15054b83bcb8da3a25d2a903ae136f
3 Plays (2, 3, & 4 Players)
If the world needs more of anything, it’s almost certainly Pollen. I’m not referring to the kind of pollen that induces widespread misery via seasonal allergies, rather I am speaking of clean and cutthroat games like Reiner Knizia’s Pollen. Where the wave of new releases in our hobby seems to be drifting toward more mechanical fluff and less meaningful player interaction, Pollen cuts against the blowing current with a card game that is surprisingly sharp.
The beautiful illustrations by Beth Sobel and stunning production by Allplay work wonders to welcome newcomers in while hiding the true essence of this competition. Although it may look the part, this isn’t your stereotypical nature game of gentle drafting or cozy tile arrangement. Rather, Pollen is an area majority cage match that embraces the predatory circle of life.
Turns are as simple a playing a single card from your hand and then drawing back up to 5 from your personal draw pile. Each player has the same deck of cards, but how, where, and when you use them makes all the difference. The objective is to surround pollinator tokens with matching cards in order to win that majority competition. You’re competing to earn bees, beetles, and butterflies, and whoever surrounds that insect with the most matching symbols will claim the bug meeple.
But earning a bee here and a butterfly there doesn’t earn you points on its own. The overarching competition is in holding the majority of each bug type. If you don’t have a majority of bees or beetles or butterflies at the end of the game, then you are simply eliminated from victory. And if you have the majority of 2 or 3 bug types, then you straight up win. Most often, you’ll have 3 players who tie by each having the majority in a different bug type. This is where the rest of your bug tokens matter, as you’ll see who has the most tokens in their 2 non-winning categories.
So with newcomers, it’s important to make these victory conditions crystal clear before diving into the fun. This double-layered contention of majorities is what makes Pollen sing, and it’s a welcome callback to Knizia’s legendary tile-layer — Samurai. In fact, Samurai is the entire reason that Pollen exists, as this game was previously published as Samurai: The Card Game.
While the gameplay is unchanged, Pollen has a massive advantage over Samurai: The Card Game with a gorgeous production that takes up far less table space. The pollinator tokens and the cards that fit around them are a stroke of genius by publisher Allplay in how they cut the table spread of the game in half. It’s also much faster and easier to bring to the table compared to Samurai while still providing much of the juicy tactics and familiar maneuvers.
The painful decisions are plentiful as you must decide where to give up on pollinator battles, when to jump in on budding competitions, and when to lock down areas before an opponent swipes a bug right out from under your nose. Any player who grows attached to a particular pollinator token (by surrounding it with one or two strong cards) might quickly turn grumpy if another player happens to have the perfect hand to steal their hopes and dreams away.
The standout feature of this flavor of Samurai is found in the unbound spread of cards and tokens. Any time I place my card next to an opponent’s card, where we create an empty half circle between our corners, that space will immediately pull in the pollinator token that is “on deck” from the supply. If the pollinator token has a bee on it, then I’m looking to place my bee card next to an opponent’s non-bee card, giving myself and instant advantage over them as the bee pollinator sidles right up to us. It feels even better to trigger the placement of multiple pollinator tokens in one turn — where you get to draw extra tokens out the bag and decide where each token goes. As always, Knizia finds a way to lace his simple rules with brilliant nuances and delightful discoveries.
Many Kniziaphiles might balk and wonder why they would ever play Pollen over the more strategic Samurai. But I find that this card game benefits from its new makeover by reminding us all that it is meant to be taken less seriously than its board game sibling. Those who approach Pollen looking for a quick and casual yet spicy filler game are likely to come away the most satisfied.

BioLargo (OTCQB:BLGO) - Environmental Solutions and Engineering Services

BioLargo – OTCQB:BLGO

BLGO represents the majority of my portfolio. My first shares were purchased on March 1, 2021 and I have consistently bought shares throughout the last 27 months.
BioLargo is an environmental engineering company. There are 5 divisions of the company. 2 of them (BLEST and BioLargo Water) focus primarily on water treatment. ONM Environmental focuses on odoVOC control in both the industrial sector and as a wholesale distributor for a consumer pet odor control product. BETI is new in 2023 and is developing sodium-sulfur battery technology. Clyra is a medical subsidiary that develops products based on a copper-iodine chemistry that has safe but incredibly powerful oxidation capabilities for infection control in surgical settings.

Currently pushed up against the \"ceiling\" of the Oct 2022-Present compression. Still have to shake the 2019-Present compression (top red line). 2008-September 2022 \"Ceiling\" was broken out of. Green floor has been firm and rising since 2021.

Losses are decreasing. Growth is primarily from ONM Environmental.

ONM Environmental generating more cash-flow, bringing company close to profitability despite being the only division with positive cash flow.

Debt is basically gone.

SG&A has remained consistent as revenue has grown across recent years.

Net Stockholder’s Equity has steadily risen. $5M net stockholder equity is required for listing on the Nasdaq.

ONM Environmental – VOC/Odor Control

ONM Environmental Website - CupriDyne Website
ONM Environmental (“Odor No More) is the original division of the company. The flagship product is CupriDyne Clean which is a copper-iodine complex that oxidizes odor and VOC. It is sold in the industrial sector to landfills, waste transfer stations, US Air Force Bases, wastewater treatment plants, automotive manufacturers, marijuana growing facilities, animal processors etc. Overall, industrial sales of CupriDyne have been underwhelming from my POV, but the underlying technology has found homes elsewhere, making the asset and the division successful for BioLargo.
ONM Environmental has partnered with an advertising firm (Ikigai Holdings) and launched a consumer pet odor control product (POOPH) for household use. Pooph Website/Commercial. One of selling points for CupriDyne/POOPH is its safety. In the commercial, the product is sprayed directly into the host’s mouth to demonstrate its safety. The product uses the same baseline chemistry as CupriDyne Clean.
BioLargo serves as manufacturing and wholesaler for Ikigai who is in control of the marketing and selling of the product. BioLargo receives a 6% royalty on Ikigai’s sales of Pooph and receives revenue from acting as the supplier for Pooph. Overall, BioLargo receives about 25% of Pooph’s total sales.
POOPH is being sold direct-to-consumer, on Amazon, on Chewy.com (largest online pet supply), and is stocked in about 60% of Walmart locations. POOPH is consistently in the top-50 for pet products on Amazon.
https://preview.redd.it/cmkc1g1tns1b1.png?width=686&format=png&auto=webp&s=e3147dbdb754d65c815c26d3ec545ff3019dc2bf
From the LinkedIn page of Jordan Stanley, one of Ikigai’s co-founders:
“Over the following 10 years, I earned the reputation of an undisputed leader in Direct Response TV, producing such well-known campaigns as Billy Mays’ OxiClean, Procter& Gamble’s Tide, Febreze, and Downy brands. Throughout that time I have continued writing and producing winning commercials through Blue Moon Studios and Concepts for Doggie Steps (Telebrands), Finishing Touch (IdeaVillage), and Snuggies (Allstar). Out of 45,000 commercials in the Procter & Gamble database dating back over 60 years, the commercials I have written, directed and produced have achieved "highest-scoring, best-performing commercials" for Downy, Febreze, Dryel, Ivory Snow laundry products and have the distinction of being the "#1 best-performing 2-minute spot". I have the distinction of having 2 spots in the top 10 as measured by ASI/Ipsos. Using my method, about $3 Billion of revenue has been generated to date.”
Ikigai’s goal is to generate $100M+ in annual sales and then seek a brand sale of 3x-7x of annual sales ($300M-$700M). Ikigai has done this before with products like Finishing Touch/Flawless, which is a beauty-care product line that they sold for $900M. That brand sale was valued at 5x annual sales. Flawless/Finishing Touch Brand Sale
The estimated payout to BioLargo if/when the brand sells is $100M. As of Q1 2023, BioLargo is receiving roughly $1M/month from Pooph sales. That means Ikigai is at roughly $50M in annual sales rate after less than 18 months since first sales of the product. Ikigai has stated their expectations for 20% QoQ growth for POOPH. If that holds true, they will be at a $100M annual run-rate by Q1 2024.
ONM Environmental was the only profitable division in 2022, generating $1.13M in operating income from $4.37M total revenue. This was primarily revenue generated from POOPH, with 86% of total BioLargo 2023 Q1 revenue being POOPH revenue.

BioLargo Engineering, Science, and Technologies Inc. (BLEST)

BLEST is the most diverse and exciting part of the company to me. The core of the group is a half dozen engineers who were brought on in 2017 after CB&I laid off their entire unit during some turmoil for the company. They were working with BLGO at the time, and Dennis pitched to them that they form BLEST and continue working as the unit that they had been for 20-30 years in their previous role, but with more freedom and flexibility working for an emerging company rather than a giant company like CB&I. They agreed and are based out of Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
BLEST is led by Randall Moore. Randall has a 30+ year career in environmental engineering, leading over 1000 employees at times in his career. He has done 1000s of projects. Randall assisted the US Post Office during the Anthrax Crisis. He helped to design and implement the efforts to pump out New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. He helped during the BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico. He worked on the aftermath of the Fukushima Disaster. He designed and built the largest dioxin remediation facility in the world. Randall has worked professionally on a diverse set of projects at the highest caliber. He and the rest of the BLEST team are essential to the ability to execute stated goals, continue product development, and complete project design work.
BLEST serves 3 roles. They are here to invent new technologies. They are here to support the engineering and design work for other divisions. They are here to complete engineering work for clients.
BLEST Technologies and Projects: Aqueous Electrostatic Concentrator (AEC) for PFAS remediation, Minimal Liquid Discharge (MLD) Systems via Garratt Callahan partnership, engineering and design work for what (if goes to full scale) will be the largest waste-to-energy facility in the world, engineering and design work for Ultra Safe Nuclear Company (USNC) for their fuel production system for micro-modular reactors.
The above technologies will be discussed later. AEC, Waste-to-Energy, and USNC projects have all been engaged by clients, with the initial phases completed and the second phases scoped . Each have a proposal in the client’s hands, awaiting approval. Many technologies or projects seem very close to strong adoption or progression to future stages, but none of them have really gotten fully there. If the technologies gain more consistent traction, BLEST’s headcount will have to grow, as will their revenues.
BLEST incurred a loss of $425k in 2022 on total revenue of $1.94M.

BioLargo Water

BioLargo Water does research and development of the Advanced Oxidation System (AOS) which is a water disinfection and micropollutant destruction technology. The division is headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta and gets quite a bit of their funding and support via the Canadian government.
AOS has been used in pilot projects for stormwater treatment, brewery wastewater treatment, poultry water treatment, pharmaceutical/micropollutant removal in Montreal’s municipal facility. They have submitted a proposal to the Alberta EPA to validate the technology for use in poultry water treatment in the province, however, not much has been said since that was made public in June 2022.

AOS provides disinfection of E coli and other microorganisms. AOS also destroys tough contaminants like pharmaceuticals and micropollutants like benzene.
AOS is hard to pin down. Technically, it’s unique and very capable It has been in development for almost a decade and is yet to find a reliably commercial home. For now, it’s just been pilots and peer-reviewed journal articles published in scientific journals. My science brain loves AOS. My finance brain hates it. The company isn't churning through resources to try to commercialize, so it's not killing the company, but the combination of duration of development, unique and high level technical function, and lack of commercial success is a confusing one.
AOS Product Brochure - Quebec Pilot - Sunworks Poultry Pilot
BioLargo Water did not generate revenue in 2022 and incurred $714k in losses in 2022, which was primarily R&D budget.

BioLargo Energy Technologies Inc. (BETI)

BETI is a new subsidiary in 2023. BioLargo owns 97% of BETI with a small group of investors holding the remaining 3% of shares. The capital was raised at a valuation of $20M for BETI.
Its purpose is to commercialize sodium-sulfur battery technology. One of the original inventors (Mario Caja) of the technology has been brought on to see that through as a member of the BETI team. He has been working on molten salt battery technology for 30 years. Presently, the company is putting the capital that they raised into building small manufacturing capabilities in their Oak Ridge, Tennessee facility.

May 9, 2023 Interview Transcript
Regarding lithium and sodium ion batteries, Dennis Calvert – CEO:
“Those are exotics, lithium, cobalt, nickel, those are rare earth elements that are really mined in offshore. So foreign supply's a big problem. That's one issue. The other is, of course, they're rare, so the price is going crazy, and then the other is efficiency. Lithium has efficiency issues. It only lasts 6, 7, 8 years. Everybody's working on that. They get 80-20% efficiencies, they can't charge to 100%, it builds up dendrites. So the world's looking for a better battery for certain locations.
So our battery checks the box on a number of those long lasting domestic supply, no rare earth, 100% efficiency. We've even got an energy density that's 2.9 times that of lithium, which means a lot of power in that battery.
It's a little heavier, and it's really not designed to be in a mobile situation. It's more of the fixed site that would go adjacent to solar, like a EV charging station or solar power generation operation or grid balancing. So long-term energy storage is really where we're focused. And that's a void in the market because as, you know, JP Morgan was quoted recently saying that, ‘the battery industry would surpass that of the chip industry in the next decade.’"
On the last quarterly call (May 18), Dennis stated that they expect to be able to sell any and all batteries that they bring to market that meet the claims they have made. He said that within 4-6 months, they expect to have built a small battery facility in Oak Ridge and prototypes. On May 24, 2023 (Sequire Presentation) Dennis stated that revenue can start to be substantial in 6-9 months.
In late 2022, BioLargo added Christina Bray to their board of directors. She is the CEO of an electric vehicle charging company (BlueDot Energies). Christina Bray PR
BETI is very new and the available proven details are relatively sparse compared to some of the other parts of BioLargo's portfolio. Seems like a lot of potential, but more must be shown.

Clyra Medical

Clyra Medical is a bit surprising on the surface. What is an environmental engineering company doing in the medical field? The original inventor at the company (Kenneth Code) sought to create a chemistry that would help be helpful in infection control, as that was something his father was struggling with at the time. The result was a copper-iodine complex, which is very similar to the baseline chemistry that ONM Environmental uses for CupriDyne Clean in the ONM Environmental division.
Clyra Medical was formed so that the subsidiary could raise its own capital, independently of BioLargo. It is an asset that is 58% owned by BioLargo. Recently, Clyra has been selling shares to fund production of their first product that has 510k clearance from the FDA, BioClynse. BioClynse Product Brochure
https://preview.redd.it/zk8qgnl3qs1b1.png?width=697&format=png&auto=webp&s=a0192692321eb6a3a68013b7fc0861dfd5f3ecb6
BioClynse produces a very strong oxidation reaction, much like how CupriDyne does for odoVOC control. BioClynse is for use during surgery for infection control and can be used after the fact if a knee or hip replacement gets infected following a procedure. The product is gentle enough to be left in the body when the patient is sewn up and provides lasting infection control, including disruption of biofilm. No rinse is required, which is unique.
Other products that came to market and were successful across the last decade are starting to come into question because of toxicity concerns to tissue. The company believes that not only has the wound irrigation market expanded dramatically and will continue to, but that it is no longer being met by incumbent products.
Regarding BioClynse Efficacy and FDA Point-Of-View:
"The questions they asked us were 'You must be lying, because this has never happened before.' When we finally got through, it took us another $1.8M and about 2 years from that first moment, the reviewer said 'This is the lowest concentration of antimicrobial at this level of performance that the agency has ever seen.' And therein lies the special thing that we've been talking about since we started this company (Clyra), and it's now finally positioned to be in a very significant commercial role."
https://preview.redd.it/bbo6s81bqs1b1.png?width=846&format=png&auto=webp&s=387eee83e060b6523a257939a9addfeb93b7a606
BioClynse is expected to begin selling more substantially to orthopedic surgeons in Q2 and Q3. They have entered into a production agreement and are in negotiations with distribution partners (Clyra Production Agreement). Capital is being used to fund production. They have spent 2022 and the first parts of 2023 building out a sales rep network and “showing off” the product at industry events with significant positive response according to the company.
https://preview.redd.it/jf3eqdfeqs1b1.png?width=618&format=png&auto=webp&s=8a6b6858f2b871c71e9407d0189b32dd5dd5a8d2
Clyra Medical’s goal is to build up the company and to be spun off with the sale of Clyra to a larger medical company. Recently, capital has been raised around a $32M valuation (Reported during Q2 2022 Earnings Call, so may have changed a bit since then). As a subsidiary with just the very beginnings of commercial activity, I don’t anticipate that any spin-off would happen anytime soon, but if 2023 is the year they go commercial with a high margin product like BioClynse, that clock should begin and become less of a theory than it has been.
Regarding Future Product Development and Coronavirus Allowance:
"We were given notice of allowance for use of Clyra against coronavirus. Coronavirus is a very broad category, not just Covid, it's Middle-Eastern, SARS, it's everything, probably 300 different variations of upper respritory infections and lung disease. That opens up the pathway for us to pursue drug applications for nebulizer therapy, inhalant therapy, nasal sprays, throat sprays, and have good IP coverage. This is good IP coverage. We were denied 4 times. We kept going back and fighting for this, and finally the patent office said: You know what, you got it. They gave us a very broad allowance, and we're going to continue to expand on that. That has major implications in a drug pathway for these Clyra products, which we've always believed the tough part wasgetting the patent done, but we have that."
Clyra Medical added 2 members to their board in 2022. Clyra Board Additions. Nick Valeriani spent 34 years at Johnson and Johnson, particularly with wound control (Neosporin). Nick serves on the board of $50B-valued Edwards Lifesciences ($EW). Linda Park is the Senior Vice President, Associate General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary for Edwards Lifesciences. She also joined as a member of the BioLargo board. It has been stated that Linda has been brought on partially for her expertise and guidance as BioLargo seeks to uplist in future to a national market like the Nasdaq.
Clyra Medical incurred a loss of $1.38M in 2022, bringing in just $56k what was essentially a few initial users of BioClynse in a professional setting.

BLEST Technologies and Projects

Garratt-Callahan – Minimal Liquid Discharge (MLD) Devices
In 2021, BioLargo announced that Garratt Callahan (largest private water company in North America) approached them to ask for help finalizing the design of their Minimal Liquid Discharge technology. GC MLD Announcement BioLargo helped them finish the design and will serve as the manufacturer of the product. The product has patent coverage through Garratt Callahan. GC MLD Patent
The MLD systems are water reuse devices that take the mineral content out of water streams for use in things like cooling towers. The devices allow for an industrial water user to stretch their water budget significantly further, bringing value to clients in both reducing their water costs, but also allowing them to continue their planned operations in an environment where water availability may fluctuate based on hydrologic/drought conditions. Potential clients would be data centers, energy generation, and industrial water users.
BioLargo will make money from the manufacturing and sale of the unit (approximately $500k per unit), while Garratt Callahan will make their money from the operation of the machines.
It was expected that these units would begin being sold in 2022, however that did not happen. A factory acceptance test was successfully completed in February of 2022 ("FAT" Acceptance) , however contracts have not been announced BioLargo maintains confidence in the future of these devices and states that they are involved with a dozen or more negotiations and design work for potential projects. If those projects are confirmed, GC MLD devices can be a strong revenue stream through an established water treatment company.
GC maintains that 30-50 units can be moved annually, but that is hard to predict when the first one will be sold and if 30-50 per year is a reasonable expectation given the delayed rollout. If they can accomplish that, however, it would bring in $15M-$25M annually.

Garratt Callahan has also agreed to sell AEC for PFAS remediation (discussed below). BioLargo has stated that a few of their potential PFAS remediation projects expected to move forward soon are ones that GC brought to the table.

Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation – Fuel Production Design Work
Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC) is designing micro-modular nuclear reactors. Part of that design is a new fuel system (FCM/TRISO-fuel). They have contracted BioLargo Engineering to help design their fuel production facility in Oak Ridge, Tennesse (also where BLEST is headquartered) which opened in August 2022. Phase 1 of the project was completed. Phase 2 has gotten a verbal “yes”, but a signed contract has not been announced officially yet.
April 24, 2023 Prospectus
"In the second quarter of 2022, BLEST was contracted by Ultra Safe Nuclear to assist in producing the first prototype fuel production systems for their new nuclear reactor called the Micro Modular Reactor (MMR®). Ultra Safe Nuclear is a Seattle-based nuclear energy company that has invented a “fission battery” - a fourth generation modular nuclear reactor – that can deliver safe, zero-carbon, cost-effective energy anywhere. The MMR® uses ceramic-encapsulated nuclear fuel – Fully Ceramic Micro-encapsulated (FCM+++) – an extremely rugged and stable fuel with high temperature stability. BioLargo has been retained to provide engineering design support, fabrication, and integration for the company’s prototype fuel production systems. Because of the success of the early phase of the project, this project is expected to expand over the coming months in scope and significance to BioLargo, making them an important customer for BLEST."

Waste to Energy – Design Work
BioLargo was contracted to begin design work on a waste to energy conversion project in South America. The facility being designed would be the largest waste-to-energy conversion plant in the world if it goes to its full scale. The project has 10 years of planning and preparation behind it. The project would be 6 phases, and the company has estimated that all 6 phases would be around $50M in design work.
Waste to Energy PR
The first phase was a feasibility study and was completed. BioLargo has given a proposal for Phase 2 and is awaiting the green light from the client. The timeline to begin Phase 2 has been slower than originally expected (as seen in June 2022 image below). On the last call, there was mention of political instability in South America giving some pause to decision-making at this time, but the BioLargo continues to maintain that they are in good standing with the client and the project is in good standing overall. The client has brought 4 more projects to BioLargo in Southeast Asia.

“This developer has actually brought us 4 more projects. This one has moved from Phase 1 to Phase 2. Phase 2 will push over $1 million. Phase 3 will probably be in the $7.5 million range.”

“In April 2022, our engineering subsidiary was hired by a Southern California based sustainable energy services company to conduct a comprehensive project plan (i.e., “feasibility study”) for a waste-to-energy (WTE) conversion plant in South America – one of multiple projects in planning stages by the company. Our engineers completed the initial feasibility study and have delivered a proposal for the next phase of the project (front end engineering design, aka FEED). The client has also requested feasibility studies and a FEED proposal for WTE plants in Asia.”
From June 2022 Annual Shareholder's Meeting - note: Stage 1 is complete. Stage 2 has not begun.

PFAS Remediation:

The Aqueous Electrostatic Concentrator (AEC) is likely the biggest opportunity in the BLEST portfolio. BioLargo has one active project that has been contracted for PFAS remediation. They are awaiting approval from the client to begin the next phase and scale towards a full installation. During a May 24, 2023 (day of making this post) presentation with Sequire, Dennis mentioned that Phase 1 is complete and they are expecting to move to Phase 2 in the near future. Phase 2 would be $500k-$1M and would take 6-9 months. Phase 3 to go to full scale would be a $15M-$20M in expected revenue. It would also provide a full-scale installation to lean on for proof of function and scaling for clients to have confidence in.
AEC is a PFAS collection technology. PFAS “Forever Chemicals” are compounds that are designed to not break down through natural processes. The EPA is in the process of setting drinking water standards for PFAS that would impact 65,000 drinking water systems across the country. Incumbent technologies (Granular Activated Carbon and Ion Exchange Resin) face performance and regulatory challenges moving forward as the EPA’s proposed regulations come closer to taking effect.
In March 2023, they proposed federal drinking water standards of 4ppt for PFOS and PFOA (the two main compounds), and a combined weighted limit for 4 other PFAS compounds based on their health advisories. The regulations are expected to firm up in the coming months after necessary comment periods and EPA process etc. Federal Proposal
PFAS waste is on a trajectory to be designated as HazMat under CERCLA (HazMat Classification). When used for municipal drinking water remediation, incumbent technologies produce several tons of PFAS-laden carbon or PFAS-laden resin. Recently, Cape Fear removed almost 200 tons of PFAS-laden carbon waste from their facility (Cape Fear Waste). Cape Fear is a very large system, but even a mid-size municipal system ends up having to consider the liability of that amount of HazMat waste on a recurring basis. That “changeout period” becomes more frequent when the drinking water standards get lower.

At 9.6ng/L, the data in the right column has too high PFAS concentration to pass proposed federal limits. 4ng/L and the detection limit are very similar levels of PFAS contamination (1-2ng/L is consistent detection limit usually). 2.7-7.1 Month range for GAC and IX technologies (standard incumbents). Lower regulatory standards will require more frequent changeout of media.
The media used for GAC projects can be regenerated. Ion exchange media cannot be regenerated. GAC waste can only be regenerated for future use in some parts of the United States. The legality of that process has come into question due to concerns about releasing PFAS emissions into the air (DoD Incineration/Regeneration Ban). Some users continue to regenerate the material while the EPA goes through the process to regulate PFAS.
If regeneration is not allowed, the material will end up requiring HazMat landfilling and not be able to be regenerated for future use. That will make remediation with GAC much more complicated and expensive. It will increase the total cost of changing out carbon material by requiring more new material to be used, but also increasing disposal costs of waste. Several tons of waste (200 tons in Cape Fear) now need to be sent to a HazMat landfill.

How Many Municipal Drinking Water PFAS Remediation Projects Will be Necessary?: West Virginia recently tested 37 water systems. 19 of them would be out of federal compliance if the proposed federal standards were implemented (WV PFAS Testing). 37 systems is not a huge sample size, but this is reasonable when compared to what I have found when looking at other state-level data across the country.
If 50% of systems require remediation, that is around 32k projects just for drinking water. For reference, if there are 32k projects for half of the US population that require remediation, the average number of residents served by a system is just over 5,000, though that number will have quite a large range with some water systems serving hundreds of thousand residents..
PFAS Remediation Project Examples: In Dover, New Hampshire, a 1.1M gallon per day facility was approved for $13.9M. This was for the treatment of half of the water supply for a population of 33,000 residents. (Dover Project Details)
The project for Wausau has a cost estimate of $23M (Wausau Cost Estimate). Wausau Water serves 16000 customers (40,000 residents) and treats just over 4M gallons of water per day (Wausau Customer and Daily Flow).
Cape Fear, NC has $43M up front costs with $5M annual costs to operate (Cape Fear Costs). The facility is 44M gallons per day (Cape Fear - Size).

Municipal Water PFAS Remediation Cost Estimate: Municipal drinking water projects are generally $5-$50M caliber projects. Small town projects can be $1M-$5M, and the largest projects will end up being over $100M.
Before the federal Orange County Water District (1% of the population of the United States) estimates a total of $1B will be required for the remediation of their water systems (OCWD Estimate). That is a figure from 2020 and is expected to have increased since then.
If you use Orange County’s estimate across the United States, it will cost over $100B for municipal drinking water.
The EPA estimates that PFAS remediation will cost between $769M and $1.2B annually (EPA Estimate). American Water Works Association (AWWA) estimates up to $2.9B annually (AWWA Estimate).

What About PFAS Remediation Outside of Municipal Drinking Water? I won’t attempt to do the same thing for other water treatment sectors. You'd probably stop reading if you don't already want to. It is important to note that drinking water is only part of what will require PFAS remediation projects.
Industrial water users (landfills, oil/gas, papepulp production, metal processing/finishing, wastewater treatment facilities) will require remediation equipment.
Groundwater remediation takes place when there is a contaminated aquifer due to a spill or through things like spreading biosolids from wastewater treatment plants on farmland. If the biosolids have PFAS in them (which many do), then the groundwater is contaminated because the PFAS has been applied across the soils.
Surface water remediation can be required if high levels of PFAS are found. It isn’t clear what the EPA is planning to do with surface water, but some states have attempted to set concentration limits.
Many of the specifics still need to be firmed up by the EPA, but in general it is safe to assume that the estimated $769M-$2.9B that is estimated for PFAS remediation of municipal drinking water annually will not begin to represent the total cost of PFAS remediation in the United States.
Any company that has leading PFAS remediation technology has the opportunity to tap into a gigantic emerging market that is going to be backed by federally enforceable drinking water standards.

Aqueous Electrostatic Concentrator (AEC):

AEC Product Video - BioLargo's PFAS Website - AEC Product Brochure
AEC functions by running water across (not through) a membrane while applying electric charge. PFAS compounds are fused to the membrane and removed from the water supply. AEC only removes the PFAS compounds, which is unique for collection technologies. Materials like granular activated carbon remove all contaminants, meaning that it is very inefficient for PFAS removal since PFAS is found in such low concentrations. This is important because remediation using GAC will produce much more waste than it will with AEC (up to 1000x depending on specific water chemistry). A user of AEC doesn’t have to worry about managing several dozen tons of waste every changeout period.
Tonya Chandler on AEC Footprint and Waste Production vs. Incumbent Technologies:
How do we measure up size-wise? Well, fairly similar to a GAC system. The difference is that when you see all of our frames, I don’t need to be skidded. I could line the walls with those frames. I can drop those frames – we’ve got one customer that wants to drop them into a pit that’s in their system that they don’t use anymore. I can stack them on top of each other to create space. As long as I have maintenance room around them, I’m pretty flexible on the layout. But you’ll see I produce much less spent (media). Now, also note that that GAC number that I’m giving you there is a single pass. I’m not considering a lead-lag in that number.
GAC vs AEC Waste and Footprint Comparison – note: AEC changeout period is expected to be longer than GAC changeout period. Disposal when spent does not represent the same period of time.
Orange County Water District - AEC can produce \"Non-Detect\" results all 27 tested PFAS compounds.
Tonya Chandler on AEC Origin, Design and Function:
“The AEC stands for the Aqueous Electrostatic Concentrator, and they decided that they wanted to use the polarity of the PFAS against it. The hypothesis was that if they created some chambers that had a series of electrodes and some specialized membranes, they might be able to pull the PFAS out and create a concentrated stream. The goal was to produce a stream that met the standards. They thought, ‘well if we did multiple stages, we could probably create DI-water. They wanted to stay low energy, and they wanted the cost to be affordable.
What they found was not what they expected. When we did the initial testing on this, they found that no concentrated stream existed, although we were removing the PFAS, we weren’t finding it in the anode stream. They were able to remove 99% of the PFAS in a single pass through the system. They got a side benefit of low-energy desalination in all of this, and they got their low cost at about 30 cents per 1000 gallons.
The biggest concern for us was why we didn’t create a concentrated stream. What we found was that we were literally ripping the PFAS out of the water, and when they came in contact with the membrane that we have in there, it fused to the membrane, and once it fused to the membrane, PFAS fuses to itself, so we were able to create a system that all of the PFAS stayed on the membrane but we were able to get very high concentrations of PFAS on the membrane before it was spent.”

From September 2022 Tonya Chandler Presentation to Wisconsin Engineers
From 2023 10-Q Report:
“We have successfully validated the AEC as an effective system to selectively extract and collect PFAS chemicals from contaminated water including performance testing that shows “non-detect” levels of removal, which meets new EPA standards. We have demonstrated more than nine months of continuous operation showing no materially significant degradation of the AEC system’s components or performance over time. As a modular system, we believe the AEC is scalable to a commercial scale, and we believe that our engineering team has the experience to deliver systems to meet the needs of a commercial installation."

Dennis on Small Commercial-Scale AEC units:
"These are new – we have three of these. We just got – just built and what will happen with these machines is they go out into the field where we go through early testing program. We identify a spot, where we can work with a client the customer, and we say, let's as an additional step just to make sure, let's bring one of these out, park it into their location for three or four weeks, run some samples, run some tests and show our customer, our prospective customer that says that, the device can be well suited for the custom circumstances that surround that customer's water source.”

Hemp: Building a

Industrial hemp refers to cannabis with a THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) content of less than 0.3%. Extracts from industrial hemp seeds, flower leaves, bark, stems, roots, etc. can be used in many industries such as medicine, food, cosmetics, and textiles. The ingredient with the highest medical value in industrial hemp is CBD (cannabidiol). CBD not only has no hallucinogenic effect, but can reduce or counteract the activity of THC, another chemical component in marijuana (THC can make people hallucinogenic and addictive) , has great application value in reducing inflammation, pain, anxiety, mental illness, epilepsy, etc.
As of January 2019, medical marijuana is legal in 41 countries around the world, and CBD is legal in 50 countries. Under this situation, the industrial hemp industry will develop rapidly. It is estimated that by 2021, the global effective demand for CBD will reach 1,810 tons, and the commercial value will reach 18.1 billion US dollars. It is estimated that by 2025, the global legal marijuana consumption market will reach 166 billion US dollars. Driven by the legalization policy, the enthusiasm of enterprises to enter the cannabis market is high. The number of global cannabis companies has increased rapidly, and some cannabis leaders have successfully listed, such as CanopyGrowth, Tilray, GW Pharmaceuticals and other cannabis companies have been listed.
At present, the main consumer markets of global industrial hemp are concentrated in North America and Europe. In the next few years, as more countries and regions gradually loosen restrictions on industrial hemp, its market size will continue to rise.

2023.04.25 07:20 enlguy Questions about living in Skopje...

I started with one, and realize I have others, so this is a bit general, but was hoping to have a couple questions addressed. I am a bit nervous to share so much, but greatly appreciate information from anyone who takes the time to read and help.
WARNING: This is long, I have been through some serious emotional challenges where I've been living, and am trying to assess if similar challenges may be faced in Skopje or not. I have CPTSD, so some of this addresses things that trigger me, but also align with my personality type... just trying to get the best info I can before making a decision that would turn out badly.
How are people with personal space? I've noticed in Albania people will literally step on you or push you on the street even if no one else is around because they can't seem to be bothered to take two extra steps to give respectable space to someone else. Landlord tried just walking into my apartment more than once (had to ask three times and point out it's illegal before it stopped). If I went to the sea, and found a quiet place to sit alone, someone else would show up and sit right near me instead of using the rest of the 1km of coastline to find their own space (even with NO ONE else there). I was lying on the beach the other day, and someone literally walked OVER me, even though no one else was around. Too many assholes like this here.. Also the amount of staring in Albania is insane. SO, how are people in Skopje with regards to respecting personal space? I don't need a 10m bubble, I just don't like to feel invaded by people. This doesn't mean no friendly exchanges in shops, or things, just respectful of personal space. I realize not everyone is the same, and some of this could happen anywhere, but trying to get a sense of things. I've also read several threads (some on reddit) that say people in Macedonia gossip like it's their job, and will definitely talk about foreigners behind their backs... I have no interest in that kind of BS, and it badly affects me, so wondering how true that is? It can already be uncomfortable in a new country, dealing with a culture like that would be more than I can handle right now.
Along those lines, I need nature. In Belgrade, I lived near Zvezdara Park, and so had nature trails in a forest area I could hike along, and even if it wasn't HUGE, it worked for me as an outlet to better connect with nature, re-center, and get some outdoor exercise in a peaceful setting. Tirana's Grand Park was often way too crowded, and almost all paved pathways, so it wasn't easy to find personal space in nature even in such a large place (so layout and usage matter). Saranda has beaches everywhere, but most beaches are filled with trash, people blasting music, and screaming kids (and it's not even close to summer yet...). In short, Albania has not been easy for this, whereas Belgrade was almost easier than Saranda because of the woods vs. the over-used beaches (which, admittedly, are very small...). So... Skopje. I can look at a map, but in reality, what options might there be for a nature lover, if any? Is Gazi Baba a good park for this, or are there better places I could reach without a car? And on that note, how is public transport (I've been reading there are no rideshare apps, and taxis are constantly scamming people, so this is not encouraging to hear)?
How does the vibe/culture compare to other places? I've lived in Belgrade, Tirana, and Saranda, and have spent a bit of time around Romania, so have some ideas of the surrounding areas, in case it serves as a reference point for comparison. I read Skopje is quieter, which would be great if it's true. I'm a bit introverted and sensitive. I appreciate places with more introverts, quiet, kindness/politeness, art, etc. I know this isn't well-aligned with general Balkan culture, in some ways, but I have found places with far more kind people than others. So I guess I'm trying to understand how Skopje will rate on a scale of 'everyone is a selfish asshole' to 'people regularly go out of their ways to help others.' How are people who 'are different' treated there? Is there much of an art scene? Coffee? Things to do that don't involve getting drunk?
I'm looking at an Airbnb in Butel. Would this be a decent location? I'm on a tight budget, and this was the only thing that I found in the area. I don't mind distance from center, and hope it would mean quieter, but wonder if there's anything I should know about that area? Really, what's most important to me is calm, I don't really care about being "near things" other than a supermarket, which it would be.
Lastly, and this IS a serious question, though I realize it's maybe a more sensitive topic for some. I understand marijuana is available in pharmacies with a prescription (please correct me if this is wrong, but several major media outlets have written about this). I'm sure I could find some "around," but as someone who uses it for extreme anxiety and can't function as well without it, I wish to ask if a tourist would be able to visit a doctor there and get a prescription that would then be honored? Or is there a better way to go about this? And before someone suggests, I've tried other types of medication for the anxiety, and marijuana is genuinely what works best for me, even compared to expensive psychotropic drugs. Either way, I'm curious to learn about this system there - I am from Colorado where I watched a lot of reforms progress over the last 20 years, and am interested to learn how things progress in other countries.
Thank you for all the information. I'm 'nomadic,' and have had several very bad experiences the last couple years, so trying to get all the information I can before considering another move.

2023.03.22 23:10 JameGumb724 I Played a Secret Playstation Game From Japan When I Was A Kid and It Still Haunts Me Today - Part 2

Part 1
I made it out that night, but the thirst for and the haunting of my brain by the game didn’t go away. It never went away. I felt more and more like I was trapped in that awful endless game throughout my life.
Life did not go well. Especially after I figured out the only way to soothe the endless mind terror of the game was to drown it in as much alcohol and drugs as I could until I blacked out, and passed out.
This behavior wiped out all my teenage years. The only thing that stopped it was getting myself thrown in prison in my 20s and getting years to dry out.
Then I got spit put in my 30s. Nowhere to go. Totally unprepared for life.
I went back to my hometown. That was about the only option I had.
I walked around the town endlessly, and aimlessly. Being on the move tended to push away the monsters in my head, and, yes, they were still stalking me all these years later - I had never broken the chain of mental terror of the game.
I was shocked to see the video game stores still open at the edge of town.
There was no choice but to go in. I was further shocked to find the layout almost exactly the same, sans Morton.
Instead, a tall man about my age was behind the counter, long greasy hair, playing a game on a PC. He didn’t acknowledge me in the slightest.
I walked the racks of games, always one eye on the man behind the counter. I knew him. It was definitely Nat, just aged like me - some white hair in a sad attempt at a beard, some wrinkles on his forehead.
Nat was giving off the energy and posture of someone who was doing everything he could to avoid being talked to. I wasn’t going to let it slide this time.
I called him by his name. He seemed shocked. He still barely acknowledged me. The only information he would give me was that Morton died years earlier and handed the shop down to him.
It felt like he was going to slip away from helping me again until I mentioned a name which caught his ear:
Calyn
Nat finally stopped playing the game and made eye contact. What did I know about Calyn?
Not much. She was just my out of my league, childhood crush from growing up, and I knew he was with her.
Nat went back to ignoring me. Until I brought up the game, From Japan.
This caught his attention again. After correcting that the game wasn’t from Japan, he asked me a question:
“What was your experience with the game?”
“I ruined my life,” I answered.
Nat finally let down his wall of frigid cold cool. He looked at me with moisture in his eyes.
“Mine too,” Nat muttered.
It felt terrible to see Nat so broken. He was like this magical cool, ahead of his time, gamer bad ass when we were growing up and now he looked like an underfed and beaten dog.
I could sense a particular sadness ever since I mentioned Calyn.
“Where is Calyn?” I asked.
“At home,” Nat dropped a big revelation like it was nothing.
“Morton said you could beat the game though. Didn’t that solve the problem?” I asked.
Nat didn’t answer, but I felt no hope radiate out of him.
“So how are you getting through all this then?” I asked.
“It’s just a struggle every day,” Nat explained.
“Do you want it to be that way forever?” I asked.
Nat looked up at me, finally with some life in his eyes.
-
Nat had buried his copy of the game underneath an abandoned cabin out in the woods behind his parents’ house. He took me out there and told the true story of the game as we ventured to it.
Yes, Nat had beaten the game. One time, and it almost killed him. He explained the game seemed to connect more and more with you the longer you played it and you could feel it poisoning your blood and mind as you played.
Beating it almost killed him.
He didn’t beat it for himself though. He beat it for Calyn. She had found the game at his house and played it, driving herself mad, to the point it almost killed her. He had her hold the controller with him and helped her, while not looking at the screen as much as he could so she would be the one processing beating the game.
But he beat the game and saved her the best he could. She was tired and damaged afterwards, but she said the game didn’t permeate her mind and life the way it did Nat’s after that.
It helped them stay together. They went from first loves to life partners and had stayed strong together over the years.
Nat kept trying to beat the game on his own and he never could, and each time he tried, he lost a little more of himself, and let a little more of the game into his psyche.
He eventually gave up. He found that he could manage it with copious amounts of marijuana and keeping his life simple. He also found happiness in Calyn being able to live her life, though she had always seemed tired from experiencing the game all those years before, like it was a parasite that would never truly let her go.
We found the game. The sight of that blank disc took my breath away.
We thought that we would have a better chance if we tried it together. We fired up the game and our nerves filled the room in his little apartment.
Going back into the game for the first time in decades was harrowing. I couldn’t do anything else. Couldn’t move outside of controlling the game. I started to sweat.
The game was even harder than I remembered. It was so dark you could barely see. The monsters seemed to be hiding around every corner and they’d launch at you the second they saw you and take you out.
Nat and I took turns and neither of us could survive for more than a few minutes. We just kept dying and dying and it seemed to take the energy, life, and wind out of us each time.
The two of us sat down after a few deaths.
The two of us both knew we were starting to swiftly wither away. We were older and more weathered - the game was taking more of a toll on our bodies and minds.
I was starting to get light headed after losing my life in the game for what must have been 50 times. It was getting late into the night and I could hardly stay awake, yet I kept playing on.
I have no idea when I fell asleep or passed out. All I knew was that I woke up at some point in the middle of the night and could see Nat still playing, the remote in his hand, but him on the ground, on one knee, his face glued to the T.V.
Nat looked terrible - his face was bright red, his body was leaned forward like he had a terrible pain in his stomach and he was gasping for air. He looked like he was being strangled.
I looked closer at the screen and saw one of the faceless monsters on the screen. I could see its arms reaching out in the P.O.V. The monster was choking out Nat.
I rushed to Nat and reached for the controller. I felt something push me backward, full on knocking me over.
I felt a cold, strong grasp around my neck as I laid on the ground. I tried to fight back and push the energy off me, but couldn’t. It was far too strong.
The oxygen started to no longer get to my brain. My vision started to get foggy. I felt like my entire body got heavy, like I could no longer move it.
Then, darkness.
-
I woke up on the floor - breathless, pained, and confused. I saw a familiar face towering above me, but horribly aged.
I didn’t recognize him at first and then it came into focus. It was Morton. He was old and looked like shit but there was no denying it was him. There was no way I could mistake that disapproving scowl.
The urge to say something to Morton came over me. He held a finger to his lips. Silence. I obeyed.
Morton’s eyes went back to the screen and I looked him over again - he had the Playstation remote in his hand, he had concentration on his face, his legs wobbled, weak, as if he was struggling to keep his balance. He certainly looked like he was in a fight.
And he was struggling and fighting. I looked at the screen and Morton was taking on an entire room full of the monsters.
I had never made it as far in the game as Morton appeared to have made it. He was outside. I had never been there. He also appeared to be doing a good job at it.
I felt myself feel like I was wrapped in a bear hug. I looked up at the screen and saw the monsters overtaking Morton.
I started to feel my body crunch. It felt like I was getting rolled up into a thousand-pound rug.
I could feel my body telling me I didn’t have much time left. I looked next to me and saw Nat on the floor as well, not looking good at all.
The black was returning to my senses. I couldn’t hold out under this squeezing for much longer.
I started to scream. Nat screamed. Morton grumbled and flexed, playing the game as hard as he could.
I felt something else coming over me, over the pain and the torture and the wasted life. I felt someone fighting for me. I felt Morton fighting for me.
The T.V. screen started to shake. I saw on the screen it looked like Morton was going to work on one, final monster - a large one, and it was backpedaling.
I felt the squeezing feeling on me start to let go. I could breathe again. I felt like I could get up.
I watched the monster explode on the screen above me. I then watched the glass of the T.V. explode - showering the three of us with sparks and dark glass.
There was a moment of silence with an absence of movement. Then the world started to come back to me. I was alive, and in felt significantly better.
Then Morton collapsed onto the floor between Nat and I.
-
Morton had terminal cancer. He hadn’t actually died yet. He confided in Nat when he got sick and disappeared and told Nat to tell everyone that he simply died, but the truth was he just gave up the store, moved away, and tried to do treatment in peace.
Nat reached out to him when we were failing at the game. Morton was the next best video gamer that he knew and wanted to see if he could help.
Nat and I had failed and passed out by the time Morton arrived.
Morton knew it would kill him much sooner if he tried and beat the game, but he gave it a go anyway.
And he saved both our lives. We owed him everything.
Nat and I went to Morton’s hospital room.
He wouldn’t talk to us, or let us look at him. He would only communicate by a whiteboard which he would write answers to our verbal questions on and hand it around a curtain next to his bed.
Morton explained he could go at any minute and that he needed some help from us. He also very much in his fashion revealed something I never thought about.
Morton showed us the whiteboard - it read: This wasn’t the first time I did this for you, either :)
It clicked with me as soon as I saw his writing on the white board. I could see that dark figure standing over me that night at Corey’s house when someone saved me from the monsters in the game. Morton must have been keeping an eye on me or Corey’s house and came to save me, but kept himself hidden.
Morton quickly changed the conversation on his white board and handed us a list - an Excel sheet printed out, with a note - explaining these were the copies of the dreaded game which were still out there.
He finished by saying he had enough energy for one last question.
Would we go out and try to track down the copies of the game and destroy them?

2023.01.30 20:58 Odd-Meeting7340 [Hobby] ORPG with Dynamic Skill Trees

Hello everyone! I am a novice programmer that has been coding in C# off and on for around 10 years, and have worked on a few hobby projects before solo and would like to work with a team to make a multiplayer rpg for windows.
A little about my experience:
I do not code professionally for a living, and everything I know how to do is from youtube and reading online, but I did learn enough to complete an Arm Wrestling game, as well as a marijuana growing game with rpg elements and a couple platformers. I am familiar with unity, but am also comfortable working without an engine. I am also familiar with SQL, should the need for a database arise and could use php to make a secure connection that could be used online if we decided to go that route.

The idea:

The idea is fairly loose, and I am open to creative changes, but the 1 line pitch for it would sound something like this: "Timelines is an Online RPG about a wizard named Tim, who uses magic to alter timelines to assist and battle alternate versions of himself."

Ok, so lets talk about what that means. The game stars the player, who is Tim, as they access other timelines where other Tims(other players) can be fought, or assisted, in traditional rpg manner. The game could be played offline, in which the player would perform typical rpg quests to gain experience and gold which could be used to level up or purchase items. By entering another timeline, the player can choose to pvp with another time(destroy a tim from a corrupted timeline), or pve(assist a tim with a quest in their timeline).

If a player alters the timelines enough, their own timeline can change, altering any unallocated skills in their talent tree(changing the future). When the skill tree is altered in this way, its layout is completely changed. For example, a level 10 Tim alters the timeline by killing a bunch of other evil tims, causing the talent tree past level 10 to reconfigure to perhaps include more pvp skills. This is where the term "dynamic skill tree" comes from.

Skill trees are generated using the Lindenmayer System to create it shape, it is then populated by skill nodes at the forks. The initial skill tree will be generated by a CYOA style story, and influenced by starting stats. I used the L system to make a plant growing simulator before, and am confident that this could be implemented as a skill tree with a little work.
The Scope:
I want the game the be a AAA game that shines in literally every area. Ok, enough daydreaming. I envision the game to used 2D sprites and turn based combat, require authentication with a database or logon server to play online, and facilitate online play using either stored character information from a database or p2p connections. I can do art if needed, but would like to focus my efforts on programming. I think a playable prototype showcasing the skill tree generation could happen in 2-3 weeks with a working gameplay loop featuring combat, save/load of player data, as well as the foundation for online play. If things seem to be on track up to that point, I think the polished end result could be about a month after the prototype.

Why not revshare?
I have no idea how to turn a video game into money, and so I have not included those in my plans. If YOU know how to make money off the game, I would definitely be more than open to the idea, but as of this posting I am in it because I enjoy it and would like to find people that are ok with doing this for the sake of building a portfolio or just having fun with strangers.

TL;DR
Looking for help making a 2D online rpg in about 2 - 3 months using C#/Unity/SQL

2023.01.29 19:37 Inatun I started being a caregiver at age 3. I know I need therapy, but in the meantime I just need to vent.

When I was three and my sister was nine, our Mom got diagnosed with MS. I don't have any real memories from before that. As a side note, I'm on the spectrum, which is an important detail for later.
It started out simply enough. When the kitchen timer goes off be sure to wake Mom up from her nap. Load and unload the dishwasher, especially the glasses since with the layout of our kitchen Mom can't reach the cabinet without compromising her balance. Please vacuum the stairs.
I thought this was all normal stuff for kids. Later in life I learned that three is about the age where kids want to help their parents, but parents are sensible enough to give the kid plenty of time to actually be a kid.
There's also the issue of my father. I don't want to say he was a bad father, but he certainly had some issues from his own childhood that he refused to address and he managed to pass on a bunch of generational trauma to my sister and I. He grew up mostly in foster care, and while he was able to visit his Dad on weekends, my Dad and his siblings were all placed in different homes. From the stories I've heard, it sounded like life at his foster home was nothing but housework. He would attend as many after school activities as possible just to avoid going home.
As a result of all this, he seemed to have developed the mindset that you should be working all day every day until you fall asleep. If the house wasn't in perfect order when he got home from work and you were spotted resting, he'd go off on you. It never mattered how much we had actually gotten done during the day. If it wasn't perfect, it wasn't good enough, and we were never praised for when we did get something done.
He'd have his outbursts over things like this, but then within a half hour he'd be happily relaxing watching TV or something and I'd still be spun up like an emotional flywheel. I resented him for that. He was happily relaxing while I was still stewing in the bad mood he had left me with. I was the little helper though, so I couldn't have an outburst at him. I was just there to wait until I received a command to go take care of something in the house or help Mom.
His outbursts also tainted a bunch of memories that would have been cherished otherwise. For instance, I was really into Spore for a while, and I had finally managed to make it to the center of the galaxy and witness the cutscene that occurred there. It was a huge achievement for young me. A few minutes later he started yelling about how a broken bulb hadn't been changed yet, and now I can't think of that achievement without it being tainted by that outburst.
I want to clarify something here though. I don't think he was intentionally abusive, he just had a lot of unresolved issues from his childhood and maybe a case of intermittent explosiveness disorder. I still love him and have plenty of fond memories, and he's doing much better at handling his emotions, but it still messed young me up.
As for my Mom, I think she started to rely too much on my sister and I. I felt like I was always on call and that I had to be ready at a moment's notice to drop everything and help her with, in hindsight, incredibly menial tasks. I took to just spending most of my time on the computer, specifically games I could pause or walk away from at any point. It never even occurred to me that maybe I could spend time out of the house or with friends.
Also, remember how I mentioned I was on the spectrum? Yeah, that really hit hard sophomore year in high school. I had been sitting with the same group of friends basically since elementary school, and this worked since our grade always had the same lunch period through middle school. I was lucky enough to have some of them in the same period freshman year, but when sophomore year rolled around, that all changed. I didn't know how to socialize with others, not even my friends, outside of lunch. I ended up just sitting alone most of the time. Occasionally I'd sit at a table with other people, but I felt like I had nothing to contribute and I would just sit there awkwardly. Eventually I'd just go back to sitting alone because I felt like I didn't belong. The fact that I had always been on call meant I never really ventured outside the house and gotten to know any of my peers, nor had I had any of the normal high school experiences.
I eventually turned to marijuana and became a heavy user. I felt like I had nothing else, so why not just get high? I was caught eventually and sent to treatment where I started to heal, but the situation at home didn't really change.
Both my sister and I had mental breakdowns our first years at college and were forced to move back in with our parents, but our parent's old behaviors never changed. A couple years back my sister and I both moved out and into an apartment together. All of these experiences caused us to form a deep bond, and we both look out for each other. We've also used this time to try and heal some of these old wounds, and we've actually gotten pretty far. We've also confronted our parents about the issues surrounding our upbringing and things are starting to get better, but there's still a ways to go. Dad doesn't have outbursts nearly as often and promptly apologizes when they do happen, but now I'm more worried about my Mom's ability to change.
She's gotten very overweight over the years and still has trouble with her balance, but she's not taking any steps to address either issue. She laughs about how she has to rock back and forth to build up momentum to get off our couch, but we're seriously worried about her. I mean, I want her to be around a long time for when I eventually have kids, and I want her to be able to keep up with them. My Dad and my sister and I started taking ballroom dancing classes for fun and exercise, but every time we've tried to invite Mom she declines saying that turns would make her too dizzy. We've tried telling her that studies show that ballroom can help with just about everything that MS has done to her, but she won't budge. Even though she could see that dance lessons drastically increased my stamina after I lost most of it to a series of seizures when I was 17, she still dismisses it as too hard.
I'm also having to come to grips with the idea that I might be a bit traumatized. My sister's birthday was a few weeks ago and we were both busy getting the apartment ready for our parents to come over. They had driven separately and when my Mom arrived she called me asking to park the car so she didn't have to walk as far across the parking lot that was just a tad slippery. Keep in mind that she has a handicapped tag for her car, and it was something like ten feet of parking lot she had to walk across.
I froze. I was already stressed out trying to get the kitchen ready and this sent me into a panic attack. It was the exact sort of request I'd had to deal with throughout my entire childhood. I was going to have to drop everything I was doing, switch gears, and go take care of Mom because she was incapable of doing this minor thing. I swear I even started to have PTSD style flashbacks. I know it might sound petty, but keep in mind that requests like these were a daily occurrence for most of my life and it kept me in a constant state of anxiety having to be ready to spring up and perform some obscure task because it would have mildly inconvenienced my mother.
My sister had to intervene and tell her over the phone that she was going to have to just walk and then had to try to calm me down afterwards. I spent a large portion of her birthday celebration stewing in old thoughts and resentments.
Things are starting to get better, but I'm still dreading the inevitable interventions we're going to have to have with our parents over what they still have to work on, namely my Mom's eating habits and refusing to address her overall health, my Dad's Ebay addiction, and the fact that they both have serious issues communicating with each other.
If you've made it this far, thank you. I just needed to get this out of me, and maybe I can eventually show my therapist this post once I start seeing one. If anyone else here has had a similar situation or issues, please leave a comment. I'd like to know that I'm not alone in this and if there's anything I can do to help this situation that I'm not aware of.
Again, thank you for reading.

2022.10.06 10:59 monsteramommy Neighbor has loud sex and flooded our apartment.

I have lived in this apartment for 3 years. It is more of a duplex, an older home split between the first and second floor. I’ve never had issues with neighbors here before, but 2 months ago a lady and her toddler moved in and I’m tempted to break my lease.
Everything started fine, she was friendly and introduced herself and let us know she has a kid, which is fine. However, I noticed cigarette butts piling up below her balcony and next to our front door, along with various other items such as a trash can, step stool, and trash such as bottles or candy wrappers. She also doesn’t work, so she is home all day every day. We have a shared backyard, yet I’ve never seen her take her kid outside to play. I guess she would just rather him run in circles upstairs for hours on end.
Then, one night my boyfriend and I were watching TV and water began pouring out of our vents and light fixtures. I immediately ran to her door to see if she had water running and to ask her to turn it off. There was no answer. I had to call our emergency number for our landlord. An hour and a half later she came downstairs and said she was sorry she didn’t answer, but she was trying to “hold the water back” (whatever that means). She had broken the knob off of the washing machine connection and couldn’t get it to stop. Nothing was damaged, but it was a really annoying situation to deal with and get fixed.
Then, I started smelling cigarette and marijuana smoke inside our apartment. Not only is it gross and annoying, but she’s smoking inside with a toddler. I asked her if she smoked inside and she said no. It didn’t get better so I notified the landlord and told them if they couldn’t fix the situation we would need to vacate, and she seems to have stopped (for the past couple weeks or so).
The main reason I’m annoyed is because of the loud sex. Our apartments have the same layout so her bedroom is directly above ours. We’ve been woken up several times in various hours of the night, even every weekend mornings. It’s disturbing our sleep, and if I try to knock on the wall or ceiling to let them know I can hear them, they just keep going.
I really like where I live, it’s affordable and I’m a college student. It has just gotten to the point that everything is affecting my peace in my own home. It’s hard to understand because I work and go to school and it seems like she just stays home all day, gets high and chain smokes. I’m partly asking for advice, and partly just needed to vent.
If you made it this far, thank you :-)
