Ive been unemployed since march 2023, i must have been rejected or ignored by over 70 applications now (i have no fancy career im a waiter and i’m bilingual, thats it). No min wage job will take me even with my experience. I finally was offered one job which started as a 40hr offer and ended up as 16 hrs on the weekend (cant be picky when ur this desperate). Last week i signed the contract and found out i was being lowered to 10hrs and yesterday night i got let go because the restaurant is having a really low period. Not to mention i was getting payed 5€ an hour. So now it’s back to sitting and waiting for rejection after rejection. How the hell am i supposed to manage this if there’s nothing to manage?

Hi all, I am looking for some candid advice about what you would do in my position!
Currently I am weighing up how to qualify as a solicitor. I have A*AA A-levels and graduated in 2020 with a first from a RG, and then completed the PGDL with a high distinction. I then went on to work as a paralegal in a city firm, a role which I have been in since.
I have applied multiple years for TCs, and the furthest I got is one assessment centre for a silver circle firm. On my feedback they essentially said they had no bad feedback, I simply ranked 11th and they took 10. They said my (correct) answers could have been slightly longer but otherwise everything else was exemplary. I’ve never progressed further than a video interview in any other application.
Therefore, when the option to self-qualify via the SQE became more widespread I decided to take it and have been self-studying since (aiming to sit SQE 1 in Jan). I am close to the junior associates at my firm and they all say that the level of paralegal work I do is at a higher level than their trainee work was and I have enough experience to do their roles. My work includes attending client meetings, producing first drafts of pleadings etc. I also love the area of law the firm practices in and want practice it once qualified, so I am confident that I have strong QWE.
However, from speaking to people more widely (including partners at my firm), I am more and more getting the impression that I am really going to struggle finding an NQ role. My firm say that there is no guarantee on a job offer at the end. I will apply when they open applications once a year to the wider masses, and given that every associate they already have is from a magic /silver circle firm I know the competition is going to be strong. (They don’t offer TCs at all)
So, I am now wondering if I should pause studying and give TCs another go? Realistically, working full time I only have the capacity to do one or the other to a high standard.I have a strong academic background and the firm I work for has a brilliant reputation so hopefully I will be successful in TC applications, but on the other hand taking the SQE would be much quicker as I already have the 2 years QWE.

And I’m honestly quite torn between the 2. This is how I’m considering between the 2 choices and would appreciate some feedback!
NUS: I don’t have any experience with CS basically, and I am doing other stuff on the side such that I barely have any time to try it out before the deadline for decision (24th May). Whereas for Math, I’ve always had interest and aptitude since young, so I know I’ll be able to do well in it if I put my mind to it. So for NUS, I like how I am given the freedom to drop CS if need be. To me, I do feel that Math is a super safe choice for me, just that I am not sure how lucrative of a job I can land after graduation only with Math (without the CS major) since I am not too interested in the research side of Math. I also require accommodation as I live far from both universities and Tembusu has not gotten back to me 😭. I will be applying for hall as well in the case I choose NUS.
NTU: I am just super scared that I won’t be able to do well in DSAI as I have never tried coding before, or that I have to devote a lot of my time to catch up with others. And DSAI is super specific, I have no backup in the case I realise I don’t have the interest for it. The super specific part also translates to jobs in the future, but I’m less worried about that as TAISP does seem to offer many opportunities to its scholars. Also the fact that it is in its first year is also slightly risky to me. I am not really considering the monetary differences of the scholarship because while NTU definitely offers a better one, that are strings attached, which to me is both a good and bad thing, really just depends on how much I enjoy the course. I also know that actually DSAI consists of half Math and half CS modules, so there shouldn’t be too much differences in what I’m studying, just that I would be restricted to choosing more DS and AI modules as part of the “half CS”.
I think to summarise, the key thing I’m considering is the flexibility of dropping CS as a pro for NUS, and the potential opportunities I would receive in TAISP, and potentially more lucrative job in the future as a pro for NTU. - All work experience was before & during my undergrad and postgrad studies (all full-time: office, remote, and placement year).
- Relevant Languages: Fluent in English (though not a native speaker), very limited Mandarin.
- Looking to stay in Shanghai for around 2 years.
- My passport doesn't allow long-stay multi-entry L visas. I’ve managed to get a 60-day single-entry L visa before (considered rare for my passport), but I’ve been told by the visa people that I can’t stay longer than 6 months within a 12-month period using short-term L visas.
- Therefore, I need to secure a work (Z) visa or, as a last resort, an X1 student visa (though scholarship applications for this year seem to be closed).
- Applied to over 200 jobs at 100+ companies (multinationals, domestic companies, schools, etc.) in the past 2 months.
- Used multiple job platforms: LinkedIn, Indeed, GlassDoor, LaowaiCarrer, eChinaCities, HiredChina, SmartShanghai, LiePin (猎聘), and ZhiLianTuiTui (智联推推).
- Applied to a variety of positions: software-related, IT and tech support, CS/Programming & ESL teaching, customer support call centers, SEO optimization, QA/Localisation, marketing, various internships, etc.
- I've been open and flexible in my job search, willing to make sacrifices in career progression for roles I may be overqualified for or not directly related to my background.
- Multinationals seem to only need seniors or team leads with many more years of experience and have, for the most part, ghosted me.
- Expat websites are flooded with listings for teaching jobs that have good benefits and (frustratingly) loose requirements but require native English speakers.
- Many English-related jobs (localization, proofreading, digital content creation, translation QA, user research, etc.) inexplicably require native English speakers. Despite being able to excel in these roles and achieve a high IELTS/TOEFL score if needed, I am deemed unqualified solely due to my passport.
- HR on Chinese job boards have shown a lot of interest in me, but most Chinese companies don’t seem to be currently hiring international talent.
- Planning to stay in Shanghai later this year for as long as my tourist visa allows, to continue job hunting in person. I am hoping that this will simplify the process and improve my chances. I will have, at most, 3 months on my L visa.
- If during that time I still don't manage to secure work, I really won't know what else to do, as I may not be issued another L visa.
I'm currently in a bind. With my background and qualifications, finding a good programming job in Europe wouldn't be too difficult. However, in Shanghai, it's been so challenging to find any job, even those I'm grossly overqualified for, no matter how much I lower my standards regarding career progression and compensation. Although I could find a remote job, that wouldn't solve my visa issue.
Given my qualifications and experience, what are the realistic chances of finding any job in Shanghai that provides a livable wage and normal work hours? Any advice on navigating the job market or improving my odds would be greatly appreciated. Has anyone been in a similar situation or have insights on making this work?

I don't understand what the exact problem is. I make sure my CV passes the ATS checker and aligns with the job requirements. If internships are this competitive, what should I expect when applying for actual jobs?

I graduated with a BSc Maths in 2005 (Pass if anyone's interested), did a long stint in retail and had a few developer interviews, with no success, but still positive and encouraging feedback and I really enjoyed the last one. Finally landed my first office job in 2019 in sales/data admin and taken a couple other similar positions since in supply chain, but still, nothing CS related, at least, not directly.
Due to un-diagnosed ADHD, Dyslexia and possibly ASD, I was let go in 2022. Since then I have been trying break into the software industry proper. I decided last year to go in as a tester, as it's the most constituent role within the industry and I could get a recognised qualification. Finally got my ISTQB in April.
Brief breakdown of my programming skills:
Programming seems to be the thing I actually seem to be good at and enjoy. My ADHD brain loves seeing the progress of my work and how I can keep hacking away at a problem, but I feel like a massive impostor. What if I get there and I have no bloody clue what to do or what I'm looking at? I'm trying to get around this by using code I find online in some of my previously mentioned projects. This way I have to look through code I've never written and understand it via dismantling it. Then adding new stuff for what I want.
Since my uni days, I could always see myself programming for a living and liking it, but the corporate world has shown me how brutal ppl can be, so tempering my expectations.
I feel lost. I know my first office job was through sheer luck, so I know I can get basic admin roles. Inputs and advice for breaking into the software industry appreciated.

- Picked up JavaScript, PHP and MySQL to make a real-time POS system
- Learned Google Test and used that on a series of uni C/C++ work
- Recently learned Python to implement my uni dissertation (Knapsack Public Key Cryptosystem).. more proof of concept and skill than an actual security system

Here is the link to the post. It's one of the big company in Mauritius, they pay well but you work very odd hours. For this job its from 5pm to 2am so that I can work with American and Canadian.

However I'm in the process of applying for a role which only asks for a CV and cover letter. From what I've read, the cover letter should be pretty short and focus on why you want the role. The application has about 10 essential criteria points, 5 desirable criteria and another 10 points of desired experience.
If I try and write a cover letter that covers all the essential criteria with a bit of the experience, I'm looking at about a page and a half. I gather this is too long from what I've read.
How would you go about showing you match all the essential criteria and have the experience? Should I be trying to push most of this to my CV? Any advice I'd greatly appreciated.
