Hyposmia, or microsmia, is a reduced ability to smell and to detect odors. A related condition is anosmia, in which no odors can be detected. Some of the causes of olfaction problems are allergies, nasal polyps, viral infections and head trauma. It is estimated that up to 4 million people in the United States have hyposmia or the related anosmia.

TL:DR - Looking for a list of steps I can follow to guide me for AM/PM grill. Store has no hours to train me at the moment, but I really want to learn the position
Hello I want to learn grill. Unfortunately with my store’s ADS and labor right now it looks like my training is going to keep getting pushed off.
In the meantime I am trying to pick up more AM chip shifts and PM prep shifts, so that I can squeeze in minutes here and there to shadow the grill person.

2024.05.14 00:28 izall4 How Long Until Turbinates Heal After Quitting Afrin?

Six weeks ago I quit Afrin after 4 years of daily use (2-3x a day). The first 2 days were challenging, but doable. Then both airways cleared significantly, like 80-90% airflow, and I felt almost normal again for about 2 weeks. Then for no apparent reason the airflow in both nostrils reduced to 30-50% and that's where it's remained.
I saw an ENT who said I have a deviated septum and enlarged turbinates. He couldn't say for sure, but he suggested the Afrin use caused the enlarged turbinates. He suggested Flonase (I can't take steroids, so declined) and Azelastine (which I got but haven't used yet) to reduce them for two months until my next appointment. Meanwhile I've tried saline sprays, Xlear (xylotol spray), CBD oil under the tongue, nasal strips, nostril cones, menthol inhaler tubes, and a humidifier, and none of it helps much.
My question is:
For those who quit Afrin but still suffered poor airflow from enlarged turbinates, did the turbinates reduce naturally without surgery, and if so, how long did that take?

2024.05.13 19:25 burning-gal Herbal Protocol for SIBO!

Hey everyone,
Anyone would like to share their herbal protocols that worked for sibo?
I think I might have some bad bacteria in my small intestines, so I want to get rid of it. My breath test 3 months ago came back negative for sibo although I believe it was false since I was taking probiotics and some herbal antibiotics for Candida and h pylori.
I know Berberine, neem, oregano oil, alicin (garlic oil) kill it off, I almost have all of these except the alicin, I am taking these and I feel it’s killing things there cause I get bloaty and gassy and my symptoms get better as I take those.
My symptoms are bloating, (not distended stomach), gas and gas pains especially when I eat smth that doesn’t agree with me (too much sugar, gluten and dairy), nausea which is gone mostly, indigestion and some slight acid reflux if I eat the above mentioned things and slow digestion on and off.
What herbs except those I mentioned should I take to kill the bad stuff, also any good probiotics I can take later to replenish good bacteria.
Thank you lots.

2024.05.13 18:51 Fuzzy_Examination408 Are these normal side effects or am I simply getting worse?

I recently got diagnosed with h pylori and i started treatment last week.
Prior to that I used to have problems like a huge bloated tummy, depression, smelly dark soft poop, anxiety and all kinds of other discomfort, so I had to cut off high carb and high FODMAP meals. Bloating symptoms and smelly poop issues reduced drastically after I changed my diet.
But since I started taking medications last week I have been having a bloated tummy again, as of yesterday my poop has been quite dark but solid. I feel cranky and like something is wrong with my nervous system, I don’t feel like existing, my forehead has also been itching me, I don’t crave food, I feel full but I get dizzy if I don’t have lunch, I also sleep a lot more now.
My medication consists of:
Saccharomyces Boulardi, Pancreatin and Ox Bile , Mega mucusa , Berberine hcl , Olive leaf extract, Oil of oregano , L- glutamine.
Am I on a journey to getting better or is this just getting worse?
Please talk to me

2024.05.13 17:37 AllergiesYearRound Why is stuffy nose the worst

3 year old insists on breathing through her nose after being instructed to breathe through her mouth. Tried all kinds of age appropriate OTC meds including antihistamines and nasal spray, nothing worked!! Have a humidifier going with vapor oil and did vapor rub on chest and back. The only thing that works is letting her watch the tablet when she lies sideways, but she could watch for HOURS if we don’t stop her.
I’m contemplating on doing nasal rinse, but worry that would be too traumatizing and her crying would produce more snots and counter the nasal rinse. We need sleep 😭 Send help 🏳️

MEATBALL SOUP
INGREDIENTS: 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 medium onion chopped 2 large carrots peeled and chopped 3 stalks celery chopped 1 1/2 cups green beans trimmed and cut in one inch segments 1 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon dried basil 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon onion powder 6 cups low sodium beef broth 1 can (8 ounce) tomato sauce 1 can (14.5 ounce) fire roasted tomatoes 1 1/4 lbs fresh or frozen meatballs 3/4 cup Mini Farfalle pasta (ditalini, acini de pepe or orzo) INSTRUCTIONS In a large heavy stockpot heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, carrots, celery and green beans. Cook for 7-8 minutes or until slightly soft and fragrant. Add parsley, oregano, basil, garlic powder and onion powder. Cook for 2 minutes; stirring constantly. Pour in beef broth, tomato sauce, fire roasted tomatoes and meatballs; simmer for 7-10 minutes. Add the pasta and cook for an additional 10 minutes; serve promptly. NOTES You can use fresh or frozen turkey, beef, pork or chicken meatballs. They all taste good in the soup. I prefer fresh vegetables but frozen can be used in a pinch. Canned fire roasted tomatoes are tomatoes charred over an open flame before they are diced and canned. They can be found at your local grocery store with the other canned tomatoes. If you are going to freeze or store any of this soup for later consumption remove the portion that you are going to save for a later date before adding the pasta. Hold back a proportionate amount of pasta and add it at the time that you reheat the soup. Any small pasta will work like Mini Farfalle, ditalini, acini de pepe or orzo. For added flavor add 1-2 tablespoons of freshly grated Parmesan Cheese

2024.05.13 06:03 mastrofgalaxy Not sure what it is.

So have been dealing with this for about 3 months now. Started off with a super dry kind of itchy mouth and weird feeling and some red spots on the inside of my cheeks. I tried using some hydrogen peroxide mouth wash for a few days. I eventually developed a white patchy tongue that and white won’t come off. From there I got white spots on my tonsils but there was no pain. My tongue is still white in areas but not patchy but does not come off, I have no white lumps or noticeable patches or red marks or anything out of the ordinary.
After seeing the white spots I went to my dr and she didn’t know how to diagnose it but prescribed me a single dose of an anti fungal. The spots on my throat went away but the tongue stayed the same. I decided to go to another doctor who didn’t seem to think it was Thrush or Candida either. She said I should go and visit my dentist. I also started to develop a small rash on the side of my lower right lip, just in the skin. I was able to get it to go away with a colloidal silver gel.
I went to my dentist and he said it’s not Thrush or Candida. But game me an oral wash that didn’t work. So now I am here..
I am using A xylitol tooth paste Salt water with Apple cider vinegar rinse Coconut oil pulls with oregano oil And also use a metal scraper and a brush I have even tried mushroom tinctures that are anti fungal. Purchased some Therabreath deep clean rinse and colloidal silver to use as a rinse today. I brush after each meal and use the rinse twice a day.
It seems to come and go with severity. I was doing pretty good the past two weeks and had a weekend with a good amount of drinking and an edible and now I have white spots on my tonsils again, rash is back and my mouth feels a little more angry today. I am curious if anyone has anything close to this.

2024.05.13 04:40 Remarkable-Order-938 Does Anybody else have this? Anxiety.

I only have chemical sensitivity in the form of mental health. So if I use topical products like selenium sulfide, zinc pyrithion, tretinoin or retinol, mandelic acid or other aha and bha’s like salicylic acid, even oregano oil. I get MAJOR anxiety and depression but mainly the anxiety. It’s chronic and last for 9-14 days after stopping the product. I also get horrible mental health if I use antibiotics or antifungal meds. At this point I’m terrified to use anything and I’m trying to treat a topical fungal thing so I’m stuck. But I don’t get any other things like headaches or rashes or other physical issues. Anyone know what this is?

2024.05.13 00:32 triple_crown_dreamer Did I just blow out a nasal polyp?

Age/Sex: 27F
For awhile now (couple years at least) I’ve had an issue with my right sinus leaking fluid whenever I bend forward or tilt my head forward for a little bit. I thought this might be a minor CSF leak, as the fluid was always runny and clear (and I tested it using a glucose strip one day, which returned a result of 64mg/dL; I’ve dealt with pretty severe migraines ever since I was kid that I’m on imitrex for [oral and injectable] and had meningitis when I was 3, so the thought of a small hole in my dura leaking fluid didn’t seem out of the question), but today I was sitting at my desk breathing through my nose when I realized it felt like there was something lodged in my nasopharynx. After a few hard blows, I felt this sucker slither its way through my sinuses and out my right nostril. Did I just blow out a nasal polyp? I’ve always thought my nose felt difficult to breathe through because I inherited my father’s awfully deviated septum, but I can’t remember a time when I’ve been able to breathe and smell so well through my nose. Also, a polyp sounds more reasonable than a CSF leak! Thank you in advance!

2024.05.12 21:03 Environmental_Ad389 Looking for some guidance. Can anyone relate?

About a year ago, I started experiencing random dizzy spells and had two severe panic attacks. Afterwards, I started dealing with anxiety over things that never used to bother me, like going to the store or being around people. A couple of months later, I started feeling a sensation like I needed to burp but couldn't. It felt like there was a bubble stuck in my throat or chest. My doctor prescribed me PPI medication for two months, but it seemed to make the discomfort worse. Eventually, I decided to stop taking the PPIs. I often feel the need to burp, especially within 1-3 hours after eating. Often times the gas gets stuck in my chest before I'm able to burp. I’ve also noticed that If I lie down for at least 10 minutes and then sit up, I almost always feel the gas come up and burp. Occasionally, I also experience burning in my chest and the bottom of my throat, which I assume is acid reflux, although my GERD symptoms mostly feel like gas (not acid) trying to come up. Sometimes, I even regurgitate food. This has been going on for 10 months, and it's frustrating because a year ago, I was perfectly fine. I've undergone multiple medical tests, including a colonoscopy, endoscopy, gastric emptying exam, barium swallow test, and ultrasound of the abdomen, but everything appears to be normal. The endoscopy report said, “mild gastritis” and “GERD”. The doctors keep attributing it to anxiety. In the process, I've lost 20 pounds due to a restricted diet, and I can't even work out anymore because I constantly feel unwell. I tested positive for methane in a SIBO test (14ppm). A stool test showed that I am negative for h.pylori and parasites but did find some yeast, although my doctor doesn't think it requires anti-fungal treatment. I tried supplements like oil of oregano, berberine, and alicin for two weeks, but they seemed to worsen my symptoms, so I stopped. My diet mainly consists of meat, eggs, potatoes, broccoli, and almond butter. I've found that drinking seltzer beverages helps me burp, while water seems to make my symptoms worse, so I've stopped drinking it.
Does anyone have any ideas or can relate to this experience?

2024.05.12 19:04 CatornFennel Possible Non Allergic Rhinitis?

Hey y'all -
For the past few years (About 3 years total now), I've been dealing with constant mucus in my throat, making life tough and speaking difficult (However, I have no issues with nasal congestion/blockage or troubles breathing. My only symptom is in my throat). I had been diagnosed with an allergy to dust mites, but whatever I do I still feel a constant drainage in my throat. Even when I'm in rooms filled with dustmites like attics, I still feel no change in severity whatsoever. It's beginning to make me question if my allergy to dustmites causes my throat problems. Alongside this, I've tried immunotherapy, taking allergy medications like Zyrtec (2 a day) and Claritin, nasal steriod sprays like Ryaltris, Flonase, and a few other OTC and prescribed sprays, and natural alternatives like acupuncture and neti pots/xylitol spray.
Looking over other people's post with similar symptoms like mine, I had seen a common reoccurrence of people mentioning Silent Reflux, so, I got tested for silent reflux and the test showed up negative. I had also got tested for deviated symtpom/nasal polyps/other nasal abnormalities and that showed up negative, and I got tested to see if it were a bacterial infection, which that also showed up as negative.
Do y'all have any advice or ideas as to what I can dealing with? This condition has definitely plagued my life, and any feedback would be very much appreciated. Thank you so much for reading this, and if you have any questions or need me to clarify anything, then please do say so!

2024.05.12 18:10 xmavrick47x Nothing short of transformational

I’m 6 months sugar-free and I’ve undergone a transformational experience. I’m sharing mine in hopes that it can help someone else.
I’m 32 and since age 5 I’ve always been sickly with a plugged up nose and many food sensitivities. Constant blowing, sneezing, snotting everywhere. Loads and loads of tissues. My mom was woke before it was trendy to eat healthfully; she knew about the dangers of sugar and processed foods and was strict on not having these in the house, but her efforts were sabotaged by my father who wanted us to have a “normal childhood” and would hide Lucky Charms in his car for us to eat after my she had left for work. Despite her best intentions and unwavering boundaries, my mom could not stop sugar from finding me. At school, friends’ houses, etc., sugar was everywhere and I became addicted like the majority of us. I knew of the importance of vegetables and whole foods and prioritized those, but man if there were cookies around I would eat the whole bag. I cannot self-moderate my sugar intake.
Besides the debilitating congestion, I’ve had various ailments develop in the last 10 years or so:
-red, itchy, flaky scalp (this turned out to be omega-3 deficiency, went away with fish oil supplementation) and dandruff (which is still present).
-belly fat: Historically my BMI has been at the upper end of the “normal” range: ~23.5-25. 5’6”, 145-155 lbs. From playing basketball, track and field, and being generally active I always had nice arms and legs but since puberty I’ve had a belly resembling the end of first trimester pregnancy. In the last few years I started looking heavier despite eating healthier, and could not drop the weight.
-When i was 28 I developed a lesion on my chest that kept growing bigger and bigger. Steroid creams made it go away, but it always returned intermittently.
-feeling exhausted and drained most hours of the day
-needing to eat every few hours and feeling constant hunger
-irritable, bitchy moods
-periodontitis, receding gumline
-persistently stinky underarms
The turning point came when I found a wonderful naturopath and I was at a point in my life where i was tired of being sick and tired and willing to make serious changes. For my allergic rhinitis we tested for IgG antibodies and the following foods came up: milk, cane sugar, tomatoes, corn, and some others, so she suggested I avoid those. In following this elimination diet, I had thought my previous diet was healthy but I didn’t realized how far I had drifted over time, and just how much sugar I was consuming.
The first three weeks were THE WORST. Constant cravings, yearning for sugar around the clock. Salivating when I saw my friend eat an ice cream sandwich. Wanting to give up, but moreso wanting to give the diet an honest chance b/c I knew if I continued eating like I had been, nothing would changed. I gorged on honey butter toast and apples to feed the craving. It took two weeks to notice any difference in my health, but then I noticed I wasn’t as congested and I could actually breathe through my nose for hours at a time. After three painstaking weeks of starting the diet, I started to notice the sugar cravings becoming weaker and more bearable.
2 months in, this is what I wrote in my journal:
-66% reduction in nasal congestion, snot, sneezing
-better face skin, less pink and inflamed
-better poops, less soiling
-Wetter sex and higher sex drive
-A lot less severity and frequency of the hangry
-lost 5-7 lbs
-cleaner feeling teeth
-brighter, happier mood
As I was able to breath normally more regularly and not sick all the time, I noticed honey, dried fruit, and coconut sugar all triggered my sneezing and congestion. Around the 3 month mark I decided to cut all sugars out besides fresh/frozen fruit. I still have cravings, and I don’t know if they will every fully disappear, but it’s fine if they don’t b/c they are MUCH weaker and easier to ignore. 3 months in my blood glucose tested at 80, I’ve never seen it that low, I usually have 87-95 levels.
I stumbled upon Dr. Robert Lustig’s work on Youtube, read his book Metabolical, and now I’m on Fat Chance. Studying his work has been life-changing for me… Sugar IS poison- this is not a hyperbole. I suspect I had insulin resistance which interfered with my leptin signaling which is why I felt hungry all the time, despite eating every few hours. After cutting sugar, there were several weeks where I felt full and satiated despite only consuming 1000 calories or less each day. The excess belly weight melted off (without exercise), likely due to my leptin signaling being restored. When I reached 140 lbs my hunger returned and I began to consume a normal amount of calories again. (TLDR for Dr. Lustig’s explanation: When you eat a lot of sugar, you develop insulin resistance, which causes leptin resistance (the hormone that tells your brain you’re full, you don’t need to eat, you have enough energy and the body can go into "burning” mode). If you’re brain can’t see your leptin, it doesn’t know you're fat and thinks you are starving and need to go into “energy storage" mode.)
85% of my diet now is meats (pasture-raised), fish, vegetables, nuts and seeds, sheep yogurt, avocados, avocado oil, ghee. I don’t count calories. I eat until I am full. I consume fats, saturated fats and proteins without abandon. I am mindful of my carbs, including starch. Sugar is a hard no with few exceptions, e.g. coconut aminos b/c it adds a ton of flavor to dishes and I don’t binge on it. Society loves to preach “everything in moderation” but the truth is most of us suck at moderation. For me personally, it’s easier to have clearly-defined rules and not have to endure decision fatigue deciding if you can afford to eat this or that b/c I always find some way to justify it and there goes another pint of Ben and Jerry’s. For the first time in my adult life, I feel good about my stomach and can see my ab lines forming. I weigh 137 lbs, less than what I weighed in the 8th grade.
My tips on what worked for me to beat this nasty addiction:
Motivation: Keep a food journal. Can be what you ate that day, your motivations for quitting, improvement in symptoms, successes, failures, your measurements, weight. Don’t feel obligated to write in it, only when you notice something worth documenting. When I have moments of weakness, I read my entries to remember I’ve been here before and I know how things will turn out if I eat sugar.
Strategy: Rather than an all-or-nothing approach, cut out different classes of sugars one at a time: e.g. all cane sugar, then coconut sugar, then honey and maple syrup. Tailor this to whatever your specific sugar-reduction goals are.
Mindset: Get the idea out of your mind that if you accidentally ate something with sugar or if you caved and intentionally ate sugar that your whole diet is ruined so you might as well throw in the towel. That is a sneaky mind trick to get you to return to your old ways. Falling off the horse does not cancel out all the prior wins you’ve achieved. As soon as you become mindful and/or have reestablished control of the craving, begin again.
For all of you with doubts if this is worth it. It unequivocally, absolutely was for me. I’m never going back. I’m not willing to be a slave to my cravings and not have energy and be a mouth-breather. Sugar may be derived from natural sources, but the end product is not natural; it is a highly concentrated and purified product that is dangerous independent of its calories- it wreaks havoc on our hormones that control weight, hunger and satiety.
IF YOU CAN GET THROUGH THE FIRST FEW WEEKS YOU WILL BEAT THIS.
