2024.05.15 00:50 New-Age3409 Seeking Software Engineer Willing to Volunteer for Non-Profit Book of Mormon App

Hi everybody!
My uncle developed an app called Lead Me Guide Me, for group scripture study. I’m actually really pleased with how well it turned out. It’s still in it’s Beta stages, but it is up on the App Store right now: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/lead-me-guide-me/id6470545442
The app allows you to create a group, and then everyone in the group shares the same copy of the scriptures - you can share notes, and insights, and highlights, and make scripture study an interactive, digital, group activity. (My wife and I created a group, since we are Sunday School teachers together. We don't share a lot of the same schedule, so a lot of our planning is done asynchronously over text. Now, we can use the app to have it all there in the scriptures.)
Unfortunately, their current software engineer is leaving the project. They are looking for someone to replace her.
The app and company isn’t for profit - my uncle isn’t getting income from the project. (He's got a full-time job with his own company.) He just felt really inspired and directed to make an app to help people study the scriptures together, and has developed this in his spare time over the last 6 months.
For that reason, they don’t have any money to pay people, but I told him that I would just float it out there to see if anyone would be willing to volunteer their iOS Development skills on helping to clean up some of the bugs and help move it out of Beta phase in their spare time.
If you'd be willing to volunteer, please DM me. (I'm an ML engineer, so I'm going to try to volunteer too – it's been some time since I did iOS Development, but every bit counts.) I will screen to make sure you have programming experience, but that's just because I don't want to pass any random Redditor on to my uncle.
In the meantime, feel free to download the app and give it a try! If you find any bugs, you can DM them to me as well.

2024.05.15 00:50 Sad-Client-6467 Does anyone know why my quotes are so expensive?

Heya, I just wanted to ask if anyone knows why the quotes I'm getting on car insurance could be so ridiculously high relative to the value of the vehicle I've got?
Information: Age: 18 Country: UK Area: South Lincolnshire in a small Hamlet of roughly 250 residents Vehicle: 1994 Rover Metro 1.1 (carbed) GTa 5spd manual Vehicle status: currently lacks MoT and is SORN but she should be up and running within the next week and MoT'd within the next 2-3 weeks
Hopefully within the next 6 months or so I'll be passing my driving test and can finally get out and about and leave this god forsaken county and as such I've been looking at insurance policys for when I pass to see how much it'll cost me a month (my learners insurance is currently £38 a month and covers me [the policy holder and vehicle owner] along with my step dad) but I've noticed I'm struggling to find quotes that are below £9,800 a year id be ok with £2,800 with no black box (due to the conditions of the roads near me I regularly have to change sides of the road and brake sharply to avoid large potholes and as such I feel a black box with telemetry would say I'm an unsafe driver and put my premiums up). Another issue with this is that I plan on moving to Gravesend next year for an apprenticeship and will therefore need a car to get around and if I can't afford to insure the one I've got i have no idea what I'm gonna do transport wise especially since this apprenticeship may require me to leave very early in the morning and travel to various job sites. Just wondered if anyone knows why I'm being given such ridiculous quotes and wether there's anything I can do to get cheaper quotes or wether anyone has any recommendations for cheap insurance companies for young drivers. I'm more than happy to answer any extra questions if anyone has any! :)

2024.05.15 00:46 SPstandsFor [WTS] Tegris EDC/Inner Belt V2. Coyote/Black. Various Sizes. $40

Timestamp: https://imgur.com/a/gfbzcTb
PLEASE DONT USE YOUR PANTS SIZE! DO NOT USE OTHER COMPANIES BELT SIZING!
Back again with the remainder of my belts. I only have 6 stainless buckles left so these are the last for sale until more come in. The black still uses tan webbing, but only a tiny part of that is showing. There's an example of what it would look like in the pics.
V2 has Velcro going almost end to end and a tapered tail, while V1 has 1 inch of bare webbing near the loop and a squares off tail. Comparisons can be seen in pics. Black belts still uses the tan webbing, but now the Velcro loop goes almost end to end so only small parts show up.
Up for grabs is 6x 1.5" Coyote/Black Tegris EDC/inner belts. $40 each shipped to your door. Buying multiple will knock $4 off since shipping is included. PayPal F&F or Venmo only. I am now nearly out of materials, so if you fuck up your sizing, I might not be able to make a replacement for a long time. SO DONT MESS UP YOUR SIZING!
Do you hate how flimsy EDC belts are? Have you ever bought a belt marketed as "super rigid!" only to find it super floppy? Do you hate the $3 inner belt that shipped with your $200 battle belt? Are those cheap plastic loop buckles a pain while in the restroom? Well, boy do I have the thing for you!
This belt is made with a 6 layer Tegris reinforcement that goes the entire width of the belt, and anchored to heavy duty belt webbing. This means that your guns don't sag when carrying or during draws. An outside layer of loop Velcro means that you can throw your battle belt on in no time at all. The stonewashed G-Hook is made from 304 stainless and makes taking a whizz and adjustment super easy.
These are sewn by me in Texas with materials that are all sourced from US manufacturers AND Berry compliant. Everything from the buckle down to the thread is American made. And all just for $40 a pop!
I honestly believe this is the most rigid EDC belt out there. Like, no joke guys, this belt is stupid stiff. Like Mexican blue pill stiff.
HOW TO KNOW YOUR SIZING!
DO NOT USE YOUR PANTS SIZE! Pants sizes have too many variables, so use the actual measurement of your waist in inches. When measuring, include your holsters for your pistol and mags. If you're in between sizes but on the higher end, move up a size. For example, someone who is a 35" or 36" would get the 34"-38" belt.
If you don't have a measuring tape, wear your normal belt outside the loops and make a note of where the belt meets. Then measure it with your ruler to know your approximate size.
I am now nearly out of materials, so if you fuck up your sizing, I might not be able to make a replacement for a long time. SO DONT MESS UP YOUR SIZING!
Sizes (in inches) are:
COYOTE
32"-36"
34"-38"
BLACK
28"-32"
30"-34"
32"-36"
36"-40"
The buckle and loop might be a bit stiff so here's a handy guide on the best way to put them on. It'll break in after getting the buckle on a few times.

If you want a custom size or any other special request, feel free to PM me.

2024.05.15 00:45 seaweed-friend Move out mid lease due to breakup. How do I handle the lease if ex is staying and paying full rent?

I moved into an apartment in Brooklyn with my partner at the time in the fall. We recently broke up and I moved out. He has agreed to stay in the apartment through the remainder of the lease and pay the full rent. He does not plan on getting a roommate. I'd like to be off the lease, but not sure how to handle this. Landlord is a management company that isn't easy to deal with.
The lease doesn't have anything about breaking the lease early or one tenant moving out. It does state this about Assignment:
Pursuant to the provisions of Real Property Law Section 226-b, a tenant may not assign his/her lease without the written consent of the owner, unless the lease expressly provides otherwise. If the owner consents to the assignment of the lease, the owner may increase the rent as if the assignee was entering into a new lease following permanent vacancy. Such increase shall remain part of the Legal Regulated Rent for any subsequent renewal lease. An owner is not required to have reasonable grounds to refuse to consent to the assignment. However, if the owner unreasonably refuses consent, the owner must release the tenant from the remainder of the lease, if the tenant, upon 30 days' notice to the owner, requests to be released. If the owner refuses to consent to an assignment and does have reasonable grounds for withholding consent, the tenant cannot assign and the owner is not required to release the tenant from the lease. For additional information see. DHCR Fact Sheet #7.
Would this change be considered an Assignment if the co-tenant is already on the lease? And what's 'reasonable grounds' to not assign the lease?
Lastly, are there any risks with trying to get off the lease? How would I go about getting removed from this lease?

2024.05.15 00:45 thatdude807 Lengthy wait after final round

Been interviewing with a F500 company—the whole process has been 3 months so far.
I had my final round nearly two weeks ago, on Thursday, 5/2. I spoke to the in-house recruiter this past Friday (5/10) and he said they haven’t made any offers for 2 open positions.
He said that I’m in strong standing and competitive and to sit tight.
Is it possible that they’re really moving this slowly (as they have in past rounds), or should I be worried?

2024.05.15 00:41 OverReyted DD on latest filings

Disclaimer: I am not a financial advisor, this is not financial advice. I do not have any affiliation with any financial group or company. I am an individual retail investor that holds a significant number of shares in $ICU.
This was a decent filing. It wasn't great, but it wasn't bad either. My sentiment turns slightly more bullish based on the info I read and my interpretation. I will detail that below.
Cash position: Cash burn improved this quarter compared to the same quarter in 2023. We are burning $613,000 less cash. Overall, the balance sheet has significantly improved. We used a large part of the $9 million offering to clear some big debts and liabilities. Kudos to David A. Green, our CFO. Our loss per share has decreased from 54 cents lost per share to 19 cents lost per share. We didn't beat earnings estimate, but who cares about one missed earnings in the long run, especially when talking about that much improvement over a 1 year period.
We currently have $5 million in hand on cash, and it looks like we should anticipate cash burn over the next quarter of approximately $3.95 million. This isn't great, but this is also a pretty damn small number to overcome with revenue. Consider the stated cost of the Quellimmune device, $10k per unit. Some very simple math that ignores a lot of other variables means 395 units sold gets us to break even on cash flow. I'll be honest, this is almost enough to hope to think we might be able to beat a reverse split. If the timeline wasn't so damn tight, anyway. However, additional extensions are possible and improving our cash position like this certainly helps.
U.S. pediatric patient population estimated at 4,000 annually
Okay, you can't tell me that this doesn't get you a little bit excited, right? A market share of 4000 annually, we only need to sell ~395 units/quarter to break even on quarterly cash flow, and we are the ONLY company that has a product that treats this population.
Commercialization: I'm not thrilled with the stated progress here, but I think that may be due to my own impatience. To date, we don't know how many, if any, units have been sold. All the signs are pointing to zero units sold.
As we guided in late February, we expect initial sales in the coming weeks
As u/Master_inside4685 pointed out, this statement was technically made in March, so the timeline of what "in the coming weeks" means isn't clear. It could refer to weeks that we are now past, it could also mean a couple weeks from today. I'd like more clear communication on this.
Generally though, let us remember that FDA approval was given in February. That was only 3 months ago. Nuwellis has the sales team in place and an exclusive contract to commercialize the product. They will certainly take some profit off the top for themselves, but I am confident that they are prepared to move product quickly. It isn't clear why that hasn't happened yet, but I digress, I already dug into that above.
Adult product trials: Adult trials have not begun. Patients are still enrolling, see the quote below.
The NEUTRALIZE-AKI trial is expected to enroll up to 200 patients at up to 30 U.S. medical centers.
Keyword here is expected. This indicates what I stated above.
The Company expects to receive regulatory approval under a Premarket Approval (PMA) application for the SCD-ADULT in the second half of 2025 and to launch the product in the first half of 2026.
This is your big catalyst right here. Mark this down. I've said it a few times now, the long term bullishness comes from the adult device and the market share for that device. July 2025 to July 2026.
That's all I have for now. Don't forget to review the DEF14/A prior to voting. Deadline is June 4th. I recommend reaching out to your brokerage's customer service team if you have yet to receive your proxy vote information.

2024.05.15 00:37 river_stein I feel no joy in everything I do

First of all, I would like to apologize beforehand for my English writing skills, since I am not native to the English language.
Ever since my ex-girlfriend left me half a year ago before Christmas time, I feel empty.
I feel like there is no joy in everything I do and I completely forgot the feeling of euphoria.
Maybe its my very rational nature. I see in black or white. Wrong or right.
I rarely get sad about things. Because I know that, if there is nothing about it that can be changed, I shouldn’t waste any recourses being sad about it. But so am I rarely happy about things.
Of course, when I meet my friends and catch up with them, I might feel happy for the time being, but deep inside its still emptiness.
I miss knowing that there is someone waiting for me. Someone who’s overloading with joy just at the glance of me. Someone I can always rely on. Someone to fall back on.
For context: the relationship lasted 2.5 years and I am turning 20 very soon. She was my very first girlfriend as well.
I know this makes me very young and some of you may say „it’s normal to feel this way. You’re young. Let time heal your wounds.” Or “you already got a girlfriend. There won’t be any trouble finding another one” (which I am very certain about as well. I would rate my appearance at a good 7 or low 8)
But that’s the point. I don’t want my happiness depending on another person.
For all I can remember I did everything for our future. I worked throughout Highschool and saved 90% of everything to finance our vacations and maybe a house one day (these days you got to start early).
I consumed red/black pill content even before the break up. But always with caution and questioning the contents. I started working out. Because I wanted to be the best version of myself for her and for us.
I successfully applied for a dual study program at a big insurance company with high profile jobs in hopes of securing our financial prosperity.
I knew everything I did had a purpose.
Now I continue to do the same. I work. I work out. I prepare myself for the studies starting in August. That’s everything I do. I feel stuck like being on a treadmill. Knowing that all I do is objectively right. The optimal path for guaranteed success. But I feel like I’m still not moving forward.
All “fun” activities feel not the same anymore.
I really do like my friends. But going to a lake or to the swimming pool with anyone feels like a chore in order to keep my social life healthy and maintain friendships. I rather work and make money in the meantime.
Gaming doesn’t feel the way as it used to. Even tough I have a lot more time now.
I just wanted to tell this somebody who doesn’t know me with a completely new and unbiased point of view.

2024.05.15 00:35 lexanderpl Are my expectations too high or the company is a toxic environment?

So, I (7 yoe) came to this company 6 months ago, we work in data integration and processing, I'm in one of data integration teams.
Since the beginning I could see what the company is struggling with:
I tried to improve the scrum processes, add unit tests, naming conventions, unify the structure of some repositories, make the team spend more time on designing a solution, but I constantly hear "there is no time for it" or "this is good enough for now, changing it is too much effort" and when there is a fire all effort gets thrown away anyway. I almost gave up, now I focus more on producing my own code good enough (which means good architecture, docstrings, unit tests and code analysis passing), than actively engaging in everyday activities, including meetings/discussions or thinking about general improvements of our projects.
I think of jumping the ship, but for this company I left the one where things were even worse and my first company (where I worked for 6 years) was a startup, where at least I understood the requirements and had an impact on what we do and how we do it, but this startup never made money and is constantly on the verge of bankruptcy. My fear is that all I wrote above is just the reality of most IT companies, because the company must sell things and things are better when they barely work today than when they work better tomorrow, the losses made from technical debt are not as visible as profits.
What do you think about it? How common companies like this are? Have you experienced something similar? Did you had a chance to see things improve or even have any significant impact on it?

2024.05.15 00:35 Professional_Wait295 Mom- “I needed to make sure you weren’t dead”

I [30M] recently moved back in with my parents to save money for a house in SoCal (average homes in this area are $1.3 million). I actually own my parent’s home at this point due to their serious debt issues, and work for one of the most prestigious companies in the world, so this isn’t exactly a case of “loser son moves back in with parents”.
My nMom has serious boundary issues and insisted on having no lock on my bedroom door as a child so she could walk in at any moment unannounced. Prior to moving back in, I had a very serious talk with her about entering my room without my approval. She did begin in the first week by knocking, but has been testing the boundaries recently and even walked in on my girlfriend and I a couple times while we were in bed.
This morning, I slept in late after getting approval from my boss to take the day off and she opened my door around 9:30AM, waking me up and said:
Mom: “why aren’t you up yet?!”
Me: “I’m tired and taking today off work.” (I was exhausted after the move)
Mom: “That’s not a good excuse. Get up, I’ll get your coffee started.”
I then enter the kitchen to sternly confront her about opening my door again and that whether or not I’m at work is none of her business…. She wanted none of it. She completely interrupted me and talked over me. I could feel her getting more irritated as she said my childhood name in a stern tone as a parent talks to a child and said:
“Johnny…. I needed to make sure you weren’t dead.”
Flabbergasted and angry, I told her she was being absolutely ridiculous and that I’m going to install a lock on my door as soon as possible.
She told me it’s not ridiculous and that she “has to make sure your father isn’t dead all the time.” I told her that’s some elite level manipulation.

2024.05.15 00:31 MysteriousStar5418 Expat contract

Hello,
As part of a "young talent" program and under the recommendation of my N+1, my employer wants to send me to a subsidiary abroad to work on a specific project where my skills and knowledge were deemed game changer. It would be a 3 years contract.
I don't really have a opinion on this, my decisive criteria will be money (and I do expect a financial gain from it).
So I went on and did my estimation of how much I should be asking if I want to compensate cost of living, tax, financial advantages I have back home, cost of moving etc ... Because of my financial investment, moving to another country will result in a rather substantial amount loss for me because I will need to cash out and pay taxes instead of waiting X amount of years to be exempt of tax. So I would be paying more tax and lose some compound interest.
What would be the best way to negotiate my contract ? Should I just go into the HR meeting to discuss my package and show them my excel, explain them my personal investment situation and tax specificity and justify why they should pay me a hefty amount, or should I just go in with the final number I estimated and ask for that ?
What would be the best argument to use ?
I believe I have the upper hand because they are the one requesting me to go (and I am the only one considered internally, and the job cannot be filled externally because it requires company inside knowledge as the position is somewhat strategic).
Thanks

2024.05.15 00:28 bigfishbunny Should I go to small claims?

I will try to keep it short but it's still going to be long. I rented a townhouse in Nicholasville Kentucky. It is managed by a property management company. The same people that own the management company also own the property under a different business name. It had a musty smell. I deep cleaned the carpets five times before I moved in. Got an insane amount of animal fur out of it. After moving in my guinea pigs quickly developed a respiratory problem and died. My child developed pneumonia and we couldn't figure out why. When inspecting the central HVAC, I discovered the inside of it was completely covered in mold. I also found mold growing on the ceiling of my child's closet. You could see where it had previously been painted over and the mold had continued to grow through the paint. The inside of the fuse box also had mold growing in it. I documented everything with photos. My child and I left the unit to stay at my mother's home until the unit was safe. The management company sent someone out to clean the HVAC. That person rubbed the mold around some but did nothing to clean it. I asked someone from the management company to come and look. They sent their maintenance guy out. He assured me they would take care of it. He said he would put a realtor's key on the door so they could come in to fix it. I asked him not to do that and requested he just tell me when they were coming so I could be there. The next morning I arrived at the house at 8:00 a.m.. I had not received any notification of anyone coming to the house. The maintenance guy had put a realtor's key on the door against my wishes. There were people in my home when I arrived. They re-painted over the mold on the ceiling and cleaned the mold out of the fuse box. The HVAC unit will still filled with mold. They handed me a letter from the management claiming I caused the mold with improper use of the air conditioning unit. I paid out of pocket to have mold testing done, which found higher than normal amounts of mold in the air. I presented the results to the management company and requested mold remediation services be performed. I also requested they remove the realtor's key from the home and that they inform me anytime someone was going to be coming. Over the next couple of weeks they refused and continued to send people over with a key who would just come in my home without even knocking. I felt like this was some sort of intimidation tactic. I spoke to a free legal advisor who informed me the city of Nicholasville was somehow exempt from regular landlord laws. After enough fighting with the management company, we decided to end the lease. It was agreed that I would move out and be relieved of any future rent responsibilities. After I left I received an email with a bill for $2,800. They were charging me for mold remediation claiming I caused the mold from improper use of the air conditioner, whatever that means. I responded by telling her I disagree. She then emailed me saying "in that case I will charge you for the rest of the lease" and sent me an additional bill for more than $7,000. I simply ignored them. 6 months later I had a hit on my credit for a $7,000 collection. I contested it and it was lowered down to the $2,800 she originally attempted to charge me. The whole thing feels like extortion. I documented every interaction with them in great detail and have plenty of photos. I also have a paper signed by the management stating the lease has been voided. I'm afraid if I go to small claims, they will bring in lawyers that will be able to screw me over somehow with a counter suit. I just want their fraudulent claim removed from my credit. Any advice would be great.

By incorporating captivating narratives into your marketing strategy, you can effectively communicate your brand story and values, making your pet supplies online business stand out from the competition. To create captivating narratives, consider highlighting the unique features and benefits of your products, sharing customer success stories, and leveraging the emotional connection people have with their pets. By doing so, you can create a compelling and memorable experience for your customers, ultimately driving customer loyalty and increasing sales.

Utilizing social media platforms for promotion

Utilizing social media platforms for promotion is a crucial strategy when launching your pet supplies online business. With the increasing popularity and widespread use of platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, these platforms offer a great opportunity to reach a wide audience and promote your products or services. By offering real-time assistance through live chat, customers can get immediate answers to their questions or concerns, leading to faster resolution of issues. By implementing these systems, online pet supplies businesses can ensure that their customers receive the support they need, ultimately contributing to the success of their business.

Handling customer complaints and resolving issues effectively

When customers encounter problems or have concerns, it is important to address their issues promptly and professionally. This can help build trust and loyalty with customers, as well as improve the overall reputation of the business. By actively listening to customer complaints and taking appropriate actions to resolve them, businesses can turn negative experiences into positive ones. Implementing a clear and efficient customer support system, training employees on effective communication and problem-solving skills, and regularly monitoring and evaluating customer feedback can all contribute to effective complaint handling and issue resolution. By prioritizing customer satisfaction and striving to exceed their expectations, online businesses can create a positive and rewarding shopping experience for their customers.

Ignoring Analytics and Data Analysis

Importance of tracking website analytics

Tracking website analytics is crucial for the success of any online business. By monitoring and analyzing website data, businesses can gain valuable insights into their audience, their behavior, and the effectiveness of their marketing strategies. This information allows businesses to make data-driven decisions, optimize their website performance, and improve their overall online presence. Without tracking website analytics, businesses would be operating blindly, without a clear understanding of how their website is performing and how to make it better. Therefore, it is essential for pet supplies online businesses to invest in robust analytics tools and regularly review and interpret the data to stay ahead of the competition and maximize their online success.

Analyzing customer behavior and preferences

Additionally, by highlighting the keywords 'group homes for [specific target audience],' we can create hyperlinks that direct customers to relevant products and services that cater to their specific needs.

Using data to make informed business decisions

Using data to make informed business decisions is crucial for the success of any online business. By analyzing data, businesses can gain valuable insights into customer behavior, market trends, and competitors' strategies. One key aspect of data analysis is understanding Google revenue streams. Google, being one of the largest technology companies in the world, generates revenue through various channels such as advertising, cloud services, and hardware sales. 2024.05.15 00:25 Hot_Platform_6126 Alcoholic abusive father divorcing mother?

I don't really know what i'm looking for here. Advice? but also trying to find a way to write this down without it all seeming absolutely mental.
My father (55) has been an alcoholic for as long as i can remember. Growing up there has been more than one occasion me and my mum have fled to a hotel overnight or went and lived with my nan for a number of weeks before my dad would come begging for my mum (52) to come back (spoiler: she did). When I was 12 he pushed my mother into the fireplace and broke her arm. I remember being told we had to tell everyone that the dog did it running into her. It was always seemingly perfectly timed around some sort of important event (e.g the night before i had my first a level exam). I could list off things that have happened but we'd be here all night so i'll skip ahead. My mother never left him.
Back then he was what you would call a high functioning alcoholic. Binged Friday, Saturday and sometimes Sunday night but maintain the normal work week life. My mum would say he was a different person in the weekdays, on the weekdays he was David, and on the weekends he was 'Dave'. Over the years hes got worse but since the pandemic he has sunk so low that I didn't know it was possible without a body failing. He is his own boss now in his company and so with that mixed with work from home he will be binge drinking almost every night. When he drinks he is incredibly abusive to my mother. He will send her abusive text messages when she has excused herself to bed early. He has blocked her cards before when she goes out grocery shopping in order to embarrass her. He hides her items around the house. Broke her phone multiple times so she cannot contact me.
Just before the pandemic he convinced her to move away from her family to a new city 2 hours away (alot for uk) I'm now 28 living in Norway with a family of my own. I didn't set out to move to a different country but it has led to my mother being even further isolated. When we visited 2 summers ago and i was pregnant I walked in on him holding a knife to my mums throat in the kitchen and when I got him off her he tried to attack me (all was okay but incredibly scary). Ever since this i have been recording incidents down as they happen and sending them to myself so I have the memories as they were at the time incase i need it in the future.
I tried to get my mum to call the police and she is just too scared to do it. She is scared if she finds somewhere to go she will not be able to to take her dogs with her (2 golden retrievers) and they truly are her babies. He has also been working on her to tell her she is the abusive one, not him and that's where i lead to.
I talk to my mum on the phone almost everyday around 8pm so she can talk to her grandson a little and we talk about how things are. the last few days shes been telling me about my dads recent ailments. a few days ago he fell down the stairs from drinking and has smashed his shoulder in and needs an x-ray. He has turned this into saying my mother did it to him and she is abusing him. Last night he went out to get more alcohol and the bag with his red wine broke and smashed on the floor, he stood on it and got a deep cut on his foot. Now he is saying my mother has also done this to him,
Today I get a message on my phone from him telling me that he is filing for divorce from my mother on the grounds of physical abusive.... that she will get no money and its what best. she thinks he is clever enough that he will be able to pull this off...
I just can't believe the audacity of this man, but i'm also really scared for my mum. In my honest opinion he needs sectioning.
I wonder if anyone has been through anything similar with an abusive partner and have any outcomes they can share with me?
tldr: my abusive father is filing for divorce against my mother and saying she is the abusive one. She thinks he will be able to convince people of this and she will end up with nothing. How can i help her?

2024.05.15 00:25 rainbows-and-gravy Boomer twice attaches his mailbox to a tree on my property, even after post office and police get involved

Sorry, it’s a long read. I have an update to a boomer being a fool story to share that happened today! I wrote about it a couple months back on a different sub, in case this story seems familiar. But then I deleted it, as I shared a lot of info in the comments and I don’t know if the boomer has Reddit.
Anyway, so I have owned my own home for 5 years and the boomer has owned his home since the 1990’s. The way mailboxes work where I live is the post lady only delivers to one side of the road. It makes her route twice as efficient as I understand it. Everyone who lives on the opposite side of the street has two choices. Dig a hole and place the post in the ground on the opposite side of the road or place a post in a 5 gallon bucket on the opposite side of the road.
There are four mailboxes on the side of my property, as my property is an acre (my box and three more boxes that belong to people living across the street). For the last five years, not a single issue, everyone’s box was either in a bucket or in the ground on a pole.
For reasons I don’t understand, while I was outside, I see boomer across the street messing with his mailbox in my yard. I didn’t have my glasses on, and I can’t see very far without them. So he’s looking at me, but doesn’t say anything. I go on with my day, forgetting all about it. The next time I go outside, I notice that what he was doing was attaching his mailbox to a 75 foot tree on my property. Mailbox was on a pole, that was in a 5 gallon bucket and some cement keeping the bucket firmly standing upright. He put that entire thing in my yard by about 12 feet, attached it to my enormous tree with two tightly attached bungie cords at the top and the bottom. So he could have asked my permission first, but chose not to. I don’t know the guy, but we would cordially wave to each other in the past.
And in addition to this, I notice all the trees in that area (all on my property) have green x’s spray painted on them. Like six trees total. I looked up and noticed the main electrical line for the entire neighborhood goes right through all those trees, including the one he’s attached his mailbox on. The spray painted x’s mean that the electric company has those trees slated to be cut down. This is because I live in a high fire zone and so the electric company is going around cutting down all the trees that could be a danger. I can’t see if the tree he’s attached his mailbox to has an X or not, since he’s tightly got the entire thing covered.
So, I call the post master and file a complaint to have his post office box removed from my property, as in the United States, it’s against the law to tamper with other mailboxes, regardless of where they are located. Post master calls me back and explains that they’re no longer delivering his mail due to the box being located on my property. He tells me that if the post lady gets injured trying to deliver his mail, I would be liable for her medical bills because she was hurt on my property. The post master said when the boomer comes in bitching at the post office that he’s no longer receiving mail, he’ll be told that he must remove it from my property. The post master tells me not to touch the box, but says the sheriff can remove it if I call them.
So I wait a while, to see if it’ll resolve itself without escalating it. Weeks pass, he’s not receiving mail anymore, but doesn’t seem to care or notice. I finally decide to call the sheriff as the electric company had come out to remove all the trees with x’s on them, but left without doing any of it, which made me realize he possibly has his box connected to a tree that also needs to be removed.
So the sheriff comes out and she says she won’t remove the box, but that I’m allowed to remove it from my property while she watches (which I also recorded for my own documentation). The entire transaction is like 2-3 minutes. When I move it, I realize his entire setup stands on its own just fine, without being attached to the tree in my yard. So sheriff tells me she’s going to try and find the guy’s phone number so at least he’ll know why he’s not receiving mail anymore. I had actually tried to find his number too, before calling the sheriff, as I don’t feel comfortable going up to his door as a single woman. The tax assessor gave me his info, including his address, which is listed as a P.O. Box three miles away! Meaning he’s not even using his mailbox, which is likely why he hasn’t noticed no mail being delivered. Anyway, I leave a voicemail politely asking him to remove his box from my property before calling the sheriff, but I have no idea if it was actually his number.
So I thank the Sheriff for her help and go back inside. Then I see on cam, as soon as I went inside, he went running out to speak with the Sheriff. I can’t hear their conversation, but can see it perfectly and his arms are flaring as he’s losing his damn mind over having his box moved. He stands there yelling at the sheriff for exactly 12 minutes. She’s just politely nodding her head the whole time. And then as soon as she leaves, he goes over to another neighbor’s house and arms flaring with very angry body language and lots of pointing at the mailbox, he talks to that neighbor for another 20 minutes. Then he leaves, which I’m assuming was to go yell at the post office 3 miles away.
Oh, also wanted to mention that when I removed the mailbox from my tree, sure enough, he intentionally covered up the green spray painted X on the tree with his mailbox!
So that should have been the end of it. Instead, today I look outside my window and I see this idiot boomer reattaching his mailbox to my property again. This is all so ridiculous and annoying to me, that I just snapped at that point and so I opened my window and yelled out “get off my property, you and your mailbox, you’re trespassing.” And he starts yelling something with flailing arms again, but I can’t hear him from that far away…so I go, “I can’t hear you way up there, I don’t want to discuss it, just remove you property from my property right fucking now or I’ll call the police and file a trespassing report.” So then, I can see him on camera, he takes his mailbox on the pole back across to his side of the street, he digs a hole and places his mailbox at least 12 feet into his own yard. Meaning, they won’t deliver it there either of course, as now it’s on the wrong side of the road and it’s in the grass 12 feet inward on his property when it must be on the side of the road to be in compliance.
For the last five years, it was just fine in the bucket on a pole, on my side of the road, not on my property. And every other house does it properly, which he can see as well! And he’s lived here since the 90’s, knowing how things work. This is just so insane to me! All this drama over what?!? Like he’s so entitled that he gets to just use my property, without asking my permission, even with the post master telling him no? Even with the Sheriff involved? Guy is nearly 80, has to be long retired. Did he just get bored or what? I don’t understand boomers at all.
TLDR: Without asking me first, boomer (who lives across the street from me) decides to attach his mailbox to a tree on my property.

2024.05.15 00:23 the_Nightkin Feeling scrutinized and demeaned over a very small thing

A week or more ago I wrote here about moving out. It was rough, mentally draining (because I was still processing the family fight that caused the move), but I’m feeling much better now and appreciate the support I received a lot. Living alone looks more and more like a blast, even if I have to learn a lot of new things — but I like this too, feeling like an explorer of sorts, heh. Slowly transitioning from being an adult child to being an actual adult.
Following the fight we recently had a few brief chats with my mother and because I needed to take some of my other stuff I left behind I thought it was probably safe enough to try and meet. Very briefly. So I did. It was very, very brief and I was trying to pack as quick as possible, almost didn’t say a word. Today I decided to return for one last time in a while to take the last batch of stuff (mainly books, wasn’t important, but felt like a more or less final step) and… the interaction left me retrospecting.
Basically I bought myself this nice simple hat recently and knowing my mother, intuitively I expected her to comment on it, so I legitimately thought about hiding it in my backpack to avoid any comments. Just didn’t want to hear anything unnecessary. But then I felt lazy and just took it off and held it in my hand. And of course as soon as it was seen there was this baby talk that I’m not sure I can convey. It’s like “oooh, look at you, handsome”, but in this really unpleasant demeaning tone like I’m not in my 20s, but a child trying to act like an adult by buying something for himself.
I immediately felt very off for some reason and just found a way to refocus the attention elsewhere (internally cursing myself for not hiding that shit beforehand). Being autistic and having a very cyclical memory, I still replayed that phrase she said till the very evening, but just as I was starting to knock that off… out of the blue, at midnight, she wrote me and commented the same thing again, in text form. That’s where I couldn’t help it and just briefly responded “Please do not react like that, I don’t like being commented when it’s something this small. I get that you feel this way, but there’s no need to focus on my idle choices like this.”. She thought I was joking and acting “grumpy” in a playful way, so I had to elaborate and after she understood what I was saying she got upset. I can add the screenshot here, but it would be in my native language, so probably wouldn’t be helpful, lol.
And now I’m sitting here remembering how our initial recent big fight even started. It was a very small thing like me having breakfast that was commented. It was her temperament quickly losing control when I said in a neutral, focused-on-the-food tone, that I want to just have my breakfast alone. A domino effect that led to the weight of my emotions accumulated to explode.
I’m not sure what is the point of this post, probably just idle thoughts to contribute to this ongoing conversation that is this sub. I started this post by talking about being an adult child who finally gets his chance to become a proper adult. And these small altercations are like… punches in the guts. That baby talk. My own choices, however small, being perceived as “playing as an adult”. Might sound like a normal parental reaction, but if I’m telling this then I mean it — it’s more. It’s something unhealthy that I can’t shake. I think you guys can relate.
I ordered some more things for myself though. It calmed me down. Currently I have no special reason to return again, but if I should — I’ll probably hide anything new about me. There’s no significant progress in my mother and even if hiding yourself is a depressing idea, I don’t have the mental capacity to do it the other way. It’s a compromise.

2024.05.15 00:22 sanna18 Ex partner won’t take my name off rented flat lease?!

Hi this is a little embarrassing😅 My exbf and I are no longer together we were moving in to a rented flat and my name is on the lease. However we were having problems and we ended things a week ago.
I literally do not live there and have not lived there/ have wanted my name off of the lease for 1-2 months (we were trying to work things out in that time). Since a week I have been trying to get my name off the lease now for good since we are have now split up permenantly. The company says that without his consent they cannot take my name off the lease, but he is refusing to give consent/ and now just not answering anyone(including the letting companies) calls or texts I suspect because he does not have a guarantor to put down.
Please help how do I get out of this situation???? I am in Scotland

2024.05.15 00:19 debt_haver I have growing legal debt and will have student debt soon. 45k in savings, how to navigate?

throwaway account <3, NY Metropolitan Area based
Hello personalfinance!
I am currently a senior in college that is looking down the barrel of some relatively (?) serious debt that I would like help navigating. Let me lay out my situation as best I can below:
Got into some legal trouble last year, and it is still pending, so lawyer fees will likely increase, but right now they are sitting at just over $22k. I did not take out a loan, but this was money lent to me by my father. We sent a retainer of $25k that we have been eating at, but with the case pending this could end up being anywhere from $25k to $50k. We have not sorted out a payment plan yet, as the focus was and has been on making sure I am legally okay.
Despite being a senior in college, I am returning in the fall to finish some classes I need to graduate. Tuition + living (and food) expenses are looking to be around just above $17k. The bulk of that ($14k) is really my tuition. I will be subletting from a friend on campus so my living expenses are already far lower than the norm for my university/area. My 4 years of college have already been covered, I just have to cover my remaining semester. This is an upcoming cost, and not something I have paid for yet, but will have to come end of summer.
Those are my two financial stressors at this point in time. As for income and savings, lets dig in:
I plan to work at least one job this summer. I am currently interviewing for positions in NYC doing software engineering and data science. I am entering the final rounds of interviews at several companies, and I hope *knock on wood* to receive offers from 2 of them. If that is the case, I will work both, one full-time, and one part time. I have already talked to the (prospective) part-time company about this, and they have told me if I get a full-time offer from them, they would still take me part time. With that said, I do not have wages for either.
I also plan to work in the fall. I have started applying for positions, but most of my job search has been focused on this summer for now. I would love to find a computer science adjacent role for next fall, but if I cannot, I will at the very least find an on campus lower wage position, to have some income. After graduating in December I plan to find a full time position somewhere and be salaried where I can start earning real sustained income.
The real meat of my question though, is that I have $45k sitting in a fidelity account that has been earning interest (variable based on rates). This account has been continually added to by my parents as I grew up. The purpose of the account is to start off my life/career with a good sized fund to keep adding to and use a solid foundation for savings moving forward. As I look down the barrel of more debt, I am wondering what is the best way to deal with this. I understand it is hard to say with certainty without having a total value and payment plan setup for my legal debt, but I hope I can still get some valuable advice.
For example, is it more advantageous to take out however much is needed and cover my tuition and legal fees, or is it better to pay those off over time while that $45k keeps working for me? I feel like people are always anti-debt (for obvious reasons), but I also know that there are cases where leaving your money in the market may be more beneficial.
Anyway, thank you very much in advance, I will answer comments as best I can and edit this is I missed anything big.
tl;dr I have $22k in legal debt lent to me by my father. Case on going, legal debt will likely increase, but not more than $50k. I have to pay $17k in tuition/housing fees for next fall (final classes before December graduation). Have income prospects, but nothing locked in at the moment. Have 45k in savings account accruing interest. Spend savings or other options??

2024.05.15 00:14 No_Reference3577 Patch Panel 1ft cables stuck in panel

My office just had a bunch of cat 6 cables ran and couple of patch panels installed and the 1 foot patch cables are dang near impossible to move around in the patch. I know I should only move them around if necessary but nothing was labeled correctly so I’ve been scrambling to identify what patch panel port correlates to what number on the keystone jack at each workstation. Yes, we paid a company to do this and they jacked it up. I have zero patience for them to come back and do the identification so I’m doing it. I noticed the 1ft cables are monoprice. Is there another brand of cable any of you prefer or could recommend?

2024.05.15 00:06 discohooli Room for rent in Middle Village, Queens - $1250

Room for rent in Middle Village, Queens - $1250
July 1 move in date:
1 large bedroom in two story flat. Bedroom is unfurnished (set up as studio in pics) except for a built in desk and has a small closet that is currently set up as a sound booth but can be changed quickly.
There is an additional bedroom, an office and 1.5 baths in the house. The half bath is upstairs where your room and the office are. The half bath will be completely empty for anything you want to put in it. You will have full use of the living room, kitchen and back deck.
The house is about a 20 minute walk to the M & R lines near Queens Center, a five minutes walk to the Q29 and Q53 and the Forest Hills LIRR is 1.4 miles away. There is no alternate side parking so if you have a car you don’t have to move it.
I am a M(54) that has a national security-focused podcast and works as a technical advisor in the film/tv industry. I don’t have a lot of company but will occasionally have friends over for game nights (board games and RPGs) and I’ll have a couple barbecues each summer.
As far as roommates go, I don’t care about your age or gender. Room is only for one person so overnight guests are ok but not for extended stays. Please be modestly clean (I’m not a neat freak) and respectful of the space. No smoking inside apartment. Please be willing to show references and proof of steady employment. I won’t run a credit check but if you have an app to show me your score it will increase your chances over others.
Rent is $1250 a month + half of utilities. 1 year lease. Move in is first + last + security deposit. No fees.

2024.05.15 00:04 BreadPrevious2800 Investment advice for a 76 year old

Kia Ora - throw account.
TLDR: 76 year old male, in rental accommodation approx $550pw, Approx $50k p.a in company and state pension, approx $270k lumpsum to invest while he determines next steps. Options for own home/self build on family land in Wellington in the future.
Thanks in advance...
FULL
My father has received a lump sum of $270k. He is settled in a 1.5 bed rental accommodation close by and in good health, after living with us for the last 2 years. He pays $550 pw, plus minor bills (heat pump, food, insurance).
He has just bought a 3-year-old low mileage fuel efficient car with cash (17k), but mostly uses public transport.
Advice please on planning for an active 10 years, and options to transition to supported living/care home after that. He is happy with the rental, but if it was his own place you could spend $30k on it to significantly improve it.
He has never been good with money, exacerbated by several divorces, and as a result in spite of a good pension has ended up in rental accommodation with few assets.
Initial thoughts are:
An alternative preferred option is we have space to put a prefab c. 50-75sqm unit on our section. I'd be more confident of doing this within the lump sum. Still leaves residual issues on estate planning and how our land is reflected to resolve.
We are encouraging him to ensure he has powers of attorney and will up to date and inplace.

2024.05.15 00:03 CreatorReality Is this guy I met at a dating app redflag?

Hello, I would like some advice on this situation. I've met online a guy from a dating app and at first we clicked abit. In his bio he's sapiosexual and I like it because he discusses intellectual witty and deep topics. It was a refreshing convo because he engages in sexual topics rarely or sometimes. Which is what I like because most of the guy I talk to would talk sexual. This is where I know what a guy's intentions are.
Okay so he seems really nice. He's got lots of pics and he's attractive.
So here are some of the things that made me abit uncomfortable/icky is:
•Guy uses alot of emojis like every sentence, every chat bubble theres more than two emojis. I don't really mind this and I understand that people use this to express themselves but I'm not rlly used to it. This is neutral flag for me tho.
•Replies in different topics overlapping each other. When I reply I have to answer each topic. It overlaps. Our topics are deep and very intellectual. This is okay. Ngl I like the long messages.
But his way of dealing stuff got me alittle uncomfortable. He sends big ones. And I'm expected to reply the same amount.
•Doesn't answer to all of my replies but whines/complains why I didn't answer some of his questions.
•When I don't answer or if he doesn't like my answer, he judges me and making me feel bad and him being the victim. It's like guilt-tripping was happening in the conversation.
•Words, phrases unintentionally meant to be harmless, he takes it as an insult. Like I said, "You do you." on regarding the usage of emojis and he says I'm mean. Or when there's a Tornado happening in his place and I said, "Stay safe." He said I'm cold/careless.
Latest red flag for me: Wants me to reply to the messages he sent that I didn't reply yet. Well I didn't reply because he hadn't reply as well. And he's doing the same. The questions aren't even a big deal. He just said it's important for him to be answered. Also because he's bothered by the effort that didn't get reciprocated. I was like move on geez. Type it again. Also I tried to tell him to just say those missed messages again but he wont. He wanted me to scroll way up when we've had a whole new conversations before his unanswered messages.
..
What could be the reason behind this behavior? I really like his other vibe talking about movies and he's attractive but I feel like any moment he'll say something that says my words are cold and insulting and I don't want to feel bad. We just talked for like a week. This insistance to answer his efforts with the same efforts is weird.
Should I keep talking to him? Also we've never spoken after I told him it's ridiculous to go back up and reply. I actually went up and double read to see what he's been whining about that I should answer but they're just topics that aren't really relevant like pet peeves or favorite stuff. I mean if he wants to really know then ask again? 🤷‍♀️ Also I deduced that there's like he's displaying a strong desire for validation and control in the conversation. That's redflag?
