2024.04.09 21:16 chimp123456 Moreville/IL eclipse, heaven-like with fireworks & country music

Moreville/IL eclipse, heaven-like with fireworks & country music
Ended up in heaven-like farm in Goreville/IL (south of Carbondale)
https://youtu.be/P2L4mw6s_0U?si=4Hjaz3tCk-L
[ make sure u goto full frame mode ]
Sorry about poor composition, I had to use front-selfie camera..which I never done. I thought bottom of screen covered the ground!? Wrongo..
Exposure not set to 1 stop under, so video made it look like daytime. I can darken it in post ("post production")
I uploaded the raw this morning (E-day +1)
Chased 2024 eclipse like a madman, targeting:
Texas, switched to Mazatlan area (4x4 trip to Durango..then Torreon), switched back to Texas
With Texas having poor prospects, frantically searched for backup sites in:
Arkansas, SE Missouri, southern Illinois, Indiana, Ohio
^ it consumed MOST of my pre-eclipse preparation!!
Location, location, LOCATION!!
Without visibility, eclipse program = BUST
"You gotta do..WHAT YOU GOTTA DO"
"Just DO IT" -- Nike slogan
Originally targeted Texas, then switched to Mazatlan area
[ solo 4x4 offroad trip to Durango, then Torreon..in search of scenic spot. Like my solo 4x4 "Rip to Cabo" in 2019 for NORRA 1000 (offroad rally)
http://norra-offroad.blogspot.com
I REALLY WANTED an offroad experience, along with eclipse ]
However, NWS meteorologist (going to Mazatlan) gave a heads up 2 weeks out:
"Strong signs ofvsubtropical jet pushing high clouds (or worse) to Mazatlan area"
NO!!! Uh oh..Mother Nature being a b***h
Then back to Texas, since Mexico logistics a hassle
FMM visa, TVIP (Temporary Vehicle Import Permit), potentially catastrophic Customs (translation: Mordida..aka bribes)
^ wasn't worth the risk for high-cloud skies!
Hurriedly scanned for ranches in Texas, found 3 cool invites:
West of Austin (kind lady), Uvalde ranch (beauty!), farm outside DFW (doing NASA LIVE webcast!)
However, worsening Texas outlook 1.5 weeks before, led to frantic search for backup campsites:
Arkansas, SE Missouri, southern IL, Indiana..even Ohio
[ invite tobeautiful camp (Rocky Creek Ranch) in Shirley (near Clinton), kind lady owner. Few others as well.
Had a complimentary invite from Whippoorwill Lake campground (SE Missouri)..nice!
Farm owner in Goreville/IL (2 properties) had a nice rate $40/night..$30 if multiple night stay. I needed early arrival to setup my 3 mounts.
Tibetan Cultural Center (south of Bloomington/IL), 2 guys went ALL OUT to find me a place. Midwest hospitality at urs finest. Incl private farm owned by 1 of them..sweet!
Ohio rockhounding group, familiar with local weather patterns, recommended Arcola Creek Park next to Lake Erie. Lake effect winds would push away clouds. One of their contacts was going to let me have use of his home! ]
!! I was prepared to put out..
"Smokey & the Bandit" drive from LA to Shirley/AR. Weather forecast 3-days (stopover in Amarillo/TX), out necessitated switch to Moreville/IL.
Details below:
31 hr straight (no sleep), packing..then driving from LA to Amarillo/TX. Left LA late..at 1pm. Complicated by front driveshaft (just installed, pulled from PickYourPart) harmonic vibration at 60mph!? Had to set cruise control to 57mph, to avoid vibration. Getting PASSSED by everyone..incl semi-trucks!
[ Hey dummy, pull over & PULL THE G****M driveshaft!! Geezes.. It later got pulled outside Amarillo at 1:30am ]
Got into Amarillo for a rest stop. 4 hr nap, after checking weather, contacting my small network of eclipse-chasers & campsite contacts. Had to make a switch: Shirley/AR to Goreville/IL, due to worsening E-day forecasted weather in TX/AR area
FINALLY, @1:30 am outside Amarillo, pulled over to remove front-driveshaft.
[ common sense took over..sleep deprivation makes u do stupid s**t ]
Whoala, no more vibration! Set cruise-control to 80mph..started JAMMIN' ! Turned up YouTube heavy-metal (AC/DC), Steppenwolf (Sookie Sookie, Magic Carpet Ride, Born to be Wild), The Fabulous Thunderbirds (Tuff Enuff, Wrap it Up), to keep me awake. BTW, great motivational music for doing stupid stuff (teen ager territory).
^ Frankly, as evidenced by solareclipse mood of desperation, eclipse-chasing can be likened to teen-age behavior
"If it's ILLEGAL (or stupid)..I'LL DO IT!!" -- Sam Kinison, "Louder than Hell" comedian
Crossed into Oklahoma (nice modern smooth roads!), then Missouri..crossing entire totality path
west boundary, centerline, east boundary
Fought thru sleep deprivation (secret sauce -- eating Starburst candy), didn't pull over for a nap
Crossed into Illinois, got an anxious "where are you" text from the Moreville/IL farmer. Got there at 3pm.. running on adrenalin at this point
Spent Fri evening, setting up stuff..incl polar aligning 3 equatorial mounts. Went to bed at 1am
WHEW!!
Story continued...
Drams forthcoming, Plot THICKENS..
HINT: French Connection about to make its presence felt:

2024.04.03 21:14 -slaps-username- rural towns?

does anyone know what to expect with rural towns, specifically between carbondale and indy? considering a state park near the illinois border but they only have 450 parking spots and their campground is booked, so not sure what to expect with crowds. staying in danville sunday night to avoid chicago traffic in the morning and we can make last minute changes if needed. my dream is to see it in a forest/lake area free from annoying crowds. i’m assuming the majority of people from chicago are going to indianapolis or carbondale so trying to stay far away from there but i do have work tuesday so i can’t be too ambitious

2024.03.23 04:27 Bulky_Passenger_9365 Emmy Lou and my first trip to Yellowstone.

We left Johnson county, Illinois March 19 heading west for the first time and we were not at all prepared for what was to come. In southern Illinois it was 78 with almost 100% humidity but in Johnson county Wyoming it was still 3 foot of snow and our first dilima looking for a campground open we took the only road with an open gate and went just fine until we turned into the forest getting stuck in 3 foot of snow. We were stuck just one night and that morning a retired police officer from Iowa just happened upon us while he was gonna hike the mountain instead he became our rescue contacted Johnson county sheriff department and they actually or someone that had heard our story paid the tow service that pulled us out.

2024.03.01 15:31 LibertyMike Who's going camping for the Eclipse?

In 2017, my wife wanted to go see the solar eclipse that was crossing the U.S. We decided to make a camping trip out of it, but even though it was during a work week and a school year, the closest campground we could find was still a 2 hour drive from the path of totality. We ended up driving to near Shawnee National Forest in Illinois.
Totality is one of the most spectacular things I've ever seen, so it was well worth the drive! My wife was so enthralled, she looked up when the next one would be the same day, and we've had it marked on our calendar for 7 years.
Campgrounds & motels/hotels along the path of totality for this year's solar eclipse in April are sold out. We have a 4 day reservation in Ohio and the campground is full, not a single site available. Who else here plans to go?

2024.02.06 17:59 peace_love_harmony Solar Eclipse Camping

We are from Minnesota considering driving down to Illinois for camping during the eclipse. Southeast of St. Louis would be nice, but not necessary. What is the weather like during early April? Is it crazy to consider tent camping? We have done some cool weather camping in MN where it gets down to 30-40 degrees overnight but that was before we had kids. (3, 5 year old) In MN a lot of campgrounds don’t even open for the season until May, is that a thing down there as well? Any recommendations on areas to look where the geography would work for viewing the eclipse? Thanks!

2024.01.04 20:01 Quirky_Ralph Any dispersed camping available for camp camping in the Garden of the Gods park in southern Illinois?

A friend and I are looking to road trip over from IN to go camping at Garden of the Gods in Southern Illinois in a month or so and we'd love to find an isolated spot to park and make camp. Not looking for a campground where we'd be in the midst of a bunch of other people (not sure how many there will be during winter). Any advice on how to enjoy the park while we're there would be much appreciated too!
