Finding no summer jobs. Working for free to get into an industry?

2024.05.14 14:48 Lonely-Drink-1843 Finding no summer jobs. Working for free to get into an industry?

I know it's a bit of a long read but I'd appreciate your opinion.
I am planning a longer working trip to Canada. Which will involve me picking up 'travelers' work for lack of a better word (ie bar work - receptionist - server - ski resort work etc). I'm highly interested in picking up work in sking resorts as I want to stay close to the slopes through next winter. That is all besides the point.
I understand my CV is missing this kind of work.
I have tried finding summer work and jobs which include some of the listings above but I either get aired or rejected. I believe this is because of my lack of experience within said industry (industries).
I understand, why teach someone new when you have multiple candidates with years of experience within said position applying.
As much as I am content to work for free for a while to get the experience to put on my CV to get a paying job within that industry later. Or getting a job while in Canada.
I want to make sure I'm not wasting my time. I also want a job that pays because I don't want to be blowing through my savings which are suppose to sustain me while traveling.
I am currently looking for work but all my offers come from security/ justice sector and sport industries/sector as that is where my experience and qualifications are.
As much as I like this work and will find a position sooner rather than later in one of those 2 industries. So I'm not stressed about picking up work in general, or blowing through my savings and being homeless or anything like that.
I guess I'm a little nervous going over only to face the same rejection and being forced to get a ride home earlier than I wanted. I guess I'm stressing over nothing but it's been on my mind for a while now.
I am fine working for free but ultimately I want to get paid during summer. I don't want to spend months in some job thats not paying me or filling my spare time with work that isn't beneficial. I guess I could consider it vounteer work and just chalk it up to that?
Any experience with this would be greatly beneficial. Thanks.

2024.05.14 14:46 fischbobber Last night's commission meeting........

I really felt bad for Brad Anders last night. His body showed clear signs of stress taking it's toll and as I listened to the Ambulance report, I could see why.We destroyed our emergency response system during covid. All over the nation, covid exposed local health department's weakness and most communities moved immediately to address the crisis. We pretended the crisis was a hoax and went all in on keeping the bars open, a new defense against that ravages of pandemics that didn't work at all.
Obviously, ambulance response is a cornerstone of an emergency response system, but rebuilding a completely destroyed emergency system is a daunting task anywhere, much less a major metropolitan area. Frankly, I was impressed with the progress made at several levels, the additional hires for one and the overall sense of purpose in what they were trying to achieve both stood out as qualities the guys in charge of fixing this problem for another. Frankly, without those two building blocks, rebuilding what was on precarious grounds before covid, then destroyed during covid, would likely be impossible.
I was heartened to see that. I hope this transition will proceed smoothly and ambulance service will be restored to something of a functional level, but I don't see it happening all that fast. The destruction of the system was about as complete as it was going to get, and to use a medical term, we are bringing a patient back from the dead.
It was good to see unelected bureaucrats working together for the welfare of the community on the same night a commissioner who has made his term about installing a terrorist government in Knoxville made jokes about unelected officials. It's what a Nazi takeover of government was said to entail and low and behold, there it was. I don't know why his fellow commissioners continue to appease this guy. Once Jacobs is gone, hopefully someone who has a clear understanding of the role of government in operating community services will come to the plate and give these folks the resources and support to rebuild our ambulance and emergency response systems.
Currently, our commission seemed more interested last night in placating the commissioner that was behind the destruction of our medical infrastructure than they were in fixing it. When our Board of Health was fired by Commission that same Commissioner promised the people that Commission was perfectly capable of running our medical infrastructure and that garbagemen knew more about doctoring than the doctors themselves. How's that working out for us?

2024.05.14 14:45 LChris24 Fire, The Hound & the Lord of Light (Spoilers Extended)

Background
The septons preach about the seven hells. What do they know? Only a man who's been burned knows what hell is truly like. -AGOT, Sansa II
GRRM has been hinting around about Sandor Clegane and his relationship with fire since the beginning (its the first thing mentioned about him in AGOT, Eddard I). In this post I thought I would explore that a bit and see what it could mean for TWoW.
Note: I don't think gods exist in ASOIAF, they are just sources of magic. So when I say R'hllor throughout the post I pretty much just mean "fire magic".
The Initial Burning
While the Hound is walking Sansa home from the Hand's Tourney, he gives Sansa the story of how he was burned:
"Most of them, they think it was some battle. A siege, a burning tower, an enemy with a torch. One fool asked if it was dragonsbreath." His laugh was softer this time, but just as bitter. "I'll tell you what it was, girl," he said, a voice from the night, a shadow leaning so close now that she could smell the sour stench of wine on his breath. "I was younger than you, six, maybe seven. A woodcarver set up shop in the village under my father's keep, and to buy favor he sent us gifts. The old man made marvelous toys. I don't remember what I got, but it was Gregor's gift I wanted. A wooden knight, all painted up, every joint pegged separate and fixed with strings, so you could make him fight. Gregor is five years older than me, the toy was nothing to him, he was already a squire, near six foot tall and muscled like an ox. So I took his knight, but there was no joy to it, I tell you. I was scared all the while, and true enough, he found me. There was a brazier in the room. Gregor never said a word, just picked me up under his arm and shoved the side of my face down in the burning coals and held me there while I screamed and screamed. You saw how strong he is. Even then, it took three grown men to drag him off me. The septons preach about the seven hells. What do they know? Only a man who's been burned knows what hell is truly like. -AGOT, Sansa II
Bran's Vision
Several chapters before that, we see the Hound's "terrible face" in Bran's vision of the shadows during his coma dream (note that the scope of the series was much smaller here):
He looked south, and saw the great blue-green rush of the Trident. He saw his father pleading with the king, his face etched with grief. He saw Sansa crying herself to sleep at night, and he saw Arya watching in silence and holding her secrets hard in her heart. There were shadows all around them. One shadow was dark as ash, with the terrible face of a hound. Another was armored like the sun, golden and beautiful. Over them both loomed a giant in armor made of stone, but when he opened his visor, there was nothing inside but darkness and thick black blood. -AGOT, Bran III
worth noting that R'hllor is referred to as the "god of flame and shadow" as well:
On one side is R'hllor, the Lord of Light, the Heart of Fire, the God of Flame and Shadow. Against him stands the Great Other whose name may not be spoken, the Lord of Darkness, the Soul of Ice, the God of Night and Terror. Ours is not a choice between Baratheon and Lannister, between Greyjoy and Stark. It is death we choose, or life. Darkness, or light." -ASOS, Davos III
The Blackwater
In his next encounter with fire, the Hound flees the Battle on the Blackwater:
The night of the battle, Sandor Clegane had come to her chambers to take her from the city, but Sansa had refused. Sometimes she lay awake at night, wondering if she'd been wise. She had his stained white cloak hidden in a cedar chest beneath her summer silks. She could not say why she'd kept it. The Hound had turned craven, she heard it said; at the height of the battle, he got so drunk the Imp had to take his men. But Sansa understood. She knew the secret of his burned face. It was only the fire he feared. That night, the wildfire had set the river itself ablaze, and filled the very air with green flame. Even in the castle, Sansa had been afraid. Outside . . . she could scarcely imagine it. -ASOS, Sansa I
Trial by Combat
When Sandor fights Beric we see a flaming sword seemingly begin to defeat the Hound:
The flaming sword leapt up to meet the cold one, long streamers of fire trailing in its wake like the ribbons the Hound had spoken of. Steel rang on steel. No sooner was his first slash blocked than Clegane made another, but this time Lord Beric's shield got in the way, and wood chips flew from the force of the blow. Hard and fast the cuts came, from low and high, from right and left, and each one Dondarrion blocked. The flames swirled about his sword and left red and yellow ghosts to mark its passage. Each move Lord Beric made fanned them and made them burn the brighter, until it seemed as though the lightning lord stood within a cage of fire. "Is it wildfire?" Arya asked Gendry.
"No. This is different. This is . . ." -ASOS, Arya VI
but at the very end we see Sandor somehow win this "holy thing":
Smooth as summer silk, Lord Beric slid close to make an end of the man before him. The Hound gave a rasping scream, raised his sword in both hands and brought it crashing down with all his strength. Lord Beric blocked the cut easily . . .
"Noooooo," Arya shrieked.. . .
but the burning sword snapped in two, and the Hound's cold steel plowed into Lord Beric's flesh where his shoulder joined his neck and clove him clean down to the breastbone. The blood came rushing out in a hot black gush.
Sandor Clegane jerked backward, still burning. He ripped the remnants of his shield off and flung them away with a curse, then rolled in the dirt to smother the fire running along his arm. -ASOS, Arya VI
so he is set free by the Brotherhood, minus his gold (Fun Fact: The Brotherhood ends up with a good amount of gold from the Hand's Tourney).
What's Next?
When the Hound begins to follow them, some members want him dead but Thoros states that there must be some purpose left for Sandor.
Lord Beric shook his head. "Clegane won his life beneath the hollow hill. I will not rob him of it."
"My lord is wise," Thoros told the others. "Brothers, a trial by battle is a holy thing. You heard me ask R'hllor to take a hand, and you saw his fiery finger snap Lord Beric's sword, just as he was about to make an end of it. The Lord of Light is not yet done with Joffrey's Hound, it would seem." -ASOS, Arya VII
and I seem to think that similar to the show, the next step in Sandor's plotline (after Brother Ray (show) and Elder Brother (book series) is another encounter with the Brotherhood without Banners.
"Where is she?"
"A day's ride. I can take you to her, ser … but you will need to come alone. Elsewise, the Hound will kill her." -ADWD, Jaime I
Sandor in Hell
Doesn't really deserve its own section, but I thought this matched up really well:
The septons preach about the seven hells. What do they know? Only a man who's been burned knows what hell is truly like. -AGOT, Sansa II
and:
Lem grabbed her wrist and twisted, wrenching the dagger away. She kicked at him, but he would not give it back. "You go to hell, Hound," she screamed at Sandor Clegane in helpless empty-handed rage. "You just go to hell!"
"He has," said a voice scarce stronger than a whisper. -ASOS, Arya VI
Random Thoughts
Note: Sorry this post is pretty choppy. The new reddit posting interface is pretty terrible to deal with.
TLDR: It is no secret that GRRM has been building up Sandor Clegane (formerly the Hound) and fire from the beginning. With him surviving his fight with a flaming sword (not wildfire) there is some potential "purpose" left for his life (Arya wouldn't end it for him either).

2024.05.14 14:42 jennithomas321 6 Pro Tip: Invest in a solid LinkedIn profile SEO

LinkedIn can be a sales goldmine when used strategically.
Among all the social media platforms out there, LinkedIn stands out as the go-to platform for professional social networking.
But with over 900 million people using it, how do you stand out?
It requires more than a compelling bio and a polished profile image.
Do You Know??
According to the latest statistics, 40 million people use LinkedIn every week to search for jobs, and three people a minute are hired on the site.
This article will cover:
  1. Keywords
  2. Headlines
  3. Profile completeness
  4. Job title optimisation /Work Experience
  5. URL Optimization
What Is LinkedIn SEO?
How Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) works for LinkedIn???
LinkedIn SEO is all about optimizing your profile and content to boost your visibility and ranking, offering a myriad of opportunities for career progression, business networking, and establishing a prominent presence within your industry.
When you fine-tune your profile’s headline summary, work experience, and skills section with specific keywords, you can boost the likelihood of appearing in LinkedIn’s search results.
Imagine someone searching for specific keywords or skills related to your professional background – a well-optimized profile significantly increases the chances of your profile being featured in their search results.
On top of that, LinkedIn profiles can also show up in traditional search engine results pages (SERPs) like Google, expanding your online presence.
Beyond profile optimization, the impact of SEO extends to your content. LinkedIn posts and, particularly, articles have the potential to rank within LinkedIn’s search engine, showcasing your expertise within the platform.
Furthermore, these articles, with their long-form nature and valuable insights, can also rank on traditional search engines, leveraging LinkedIn’s high domain authority for increased visibility both on and off the platform.

Why You Need to Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile:

An optimized LinkedIn profile is one where every part of your personal profile is filled out and shows audiences what you do, who you are, and what you are an expert in.
This helps your profile rank higher in LinkedIn searches and builds trust among those who might want to connect or follow you.
Do You Know??
Even more compelling? Some 44% of LinkedIn users earn more than $75,000 a year. That’s a considerable bump up from the national median income of $68,703 per household.
Let's Dive in:
6 steps to help improve your LinkedIn SEO optimization for better results.

Step 1: Keywords.

A keyword is a word or phrase that searchers enter into a search engine. Learn more about Keyword Research. Examples of keywords and phrases include:
Example:
In seo bint e jamil, 'Digital Marketing Manager' is the keyword.
For LinkedIn, create a list of 7-10 words or terms that your ideal client would use when searching for the service you offer. For example:
Now, use these keywords throughout your profile in as many sections as possible, including your:

Step 2: Profile Completeness

To rank highly your profile will need to be 100% complete, with every profile section completed. Consider using bullet points rather than paragraphs, and format the text so it’s easy to read.
Let’s take a look at what you should focus on to fully optimize your LinkedIn profile.

1: Images Optimization:

When you’re setting up your profile, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got a solid profile picture.
LinkedIn can be a sales goldmine when used strategically.LinkedIn can be a sales goldmine when used strategically.
Among all the social media platforms out there, LinkedIn stands out as the go-to platform for professional social networking.

2: LinkedIn Background Photo:

Background photos are like billboards. You can use this space to show your accomplishments and awards or offer free resources.
LinkedIn Background Photo Optimization
You should also:

3: Craft a Keyword-Rich Tagline /Headline:

Your LinkedIn headline sits just below your profile image and name. Customising your headline is not only critical for SEO, it’s also an important part of your personal brand - how people view and perceive you on the platform.
LinkedIn automatically populates your headline with your current or most recent position – however, you have the option to customise it. Remember, you want the headline to create an informative and impactful snapshot of yourself.
Linkedin Headline Optimization
When creating your headline:

Headline Example:

For a digital marketing manager, a similarly optimized tagline could be, "Innovative Digital Marketing Strategies to Elevate Your Brand's Presence" — placing the target keyword "Digital marketing strategies" prominently at the start.

4. Featured Posts on LinkedIn

The Featured section on LinkedIn is a space on your profile where you can highlight important content.
LinkedIn Featured Section
It’s near the top, below your photo and headline. You can use this section to showcase:
Featured content isn’t permanent, so you can change it up to include new content as regularly as you like!

5.Create a Compelling “About” Section

The About section is the meat of your Company page. Here, you have the space to go into more detail, telling the story of your brand and naturally incorporating relevant keywords throughout.
About Us LinkedIn SEO
Here are some components to consider including in your About section:
Here’s an example of the beginning of an About section for a data analytics company:
At ABC Company, we democratize data analytics, enabling businesses of all sizes to unlock insights through our intuitive, AI-powered analytics platform.
Finally, you can add in some “Top skills” as a way to remind readers what your services are. This also presents another opportunity to add in your keywords.

6.Work Experience

When I’m looking at someone’s experience section on LinkedIn, I’m looking to see if they meet the criteria of the role beyond a job title. Their job duties and achievements give me a better understanding of their scope of knowledge and specific skill sets this role needs.
LinkedIn “Work Experience” section

Fields for LinkedIn experience entries

Each position on LinkedIn has a combination of required (*) and optional fields:

Required fields for LinkedIn Work Experience entries

Title*

List your position title, including any relevant keywords. Sometimes job titles benefit from being revised for common searches.
Example: "Content Marketing Manager" might be more search-friendly than "Manager, Marketing Content."

Company name*

Many companies already have a company profile on LinkedIn and will autocomplete from the LinkedIn Company Page in the dropdown as you type.

Employment dates*

This is usually shown by a start and end date. If you’re currently working in the role, click “I am currently working in this role” and it will automatically list your end date on your profile as “Present.”

Industry*

This doesn’t display on your profile. Select the best match and keep going.

Optional fields for LinkedIn Work Experience entries

The profile gets much more interesting with the additional, optional work experience fields including:

Employment type

Location

Sharing the location can give people reviewing your profile a sense of where you’ve worked (and where you’re likely based).

Location type

Choose from On-site, Hybrid, and Remote. Showing that you have experience working in a certain capacity can be valuable to some recruiters and employers. Example: If you have a work history in remote roles, you may be a strong candidate for additional remote roles.
Description
This is a written summary, usually two or three sentences long, that allows you to show your job duties, achievements, and expertise. By including relevant information with a few highlights and key accomplishments, you can improve your odds as a job seeker.
Pro tip: To further optimize your LinkedIn profile, consider using ChatGPT for your LinkedIn summary.

7.URL Optimization

LinkedIn allows you to personalise your URL, changing it from the automated URL, which is usually quite long and contains a random assortment of numbers. Upon updating make sure you update your email signature, business cards and other marketing collateral.
URL Optimization in LinkedIn SEO

To change your LinkedIn public profile URL:

For LinkedIn Public Profile URL:
  1. Click the Me icon at the top of your LinkedIn homepage.
  2. Click View profile.
  3. Click Edit public profile & URL on the right side.
  1. Under Edit your custom URL on the right side, click the Edit icon next to your public profile URL.
  1. Type the last part of your new custom URL in the text box.
  2. Click Save

Drive Results with LinkedIn SEO Optimization

By enhancing the different components of your LinkedIn profile page with a strategic approach to LinkedIn SEO optimization, you’ll be much more likely to appear in search results. This will go a long way toward increasing your visibility and helping drive more business opportunities. Remember that SEO isn’t just a one-time effort, but rather an ongoing process that requires regular attention and updates to deliver your desired results.

2024.05.14 14:42 Personal-Mix8387 One shot only D20 session suggestion for how to run it and lore

Hi everyone. Im running a campaing and in the last session one of my player didn't follow the others cause his character was just too drunk ( he is a really good roleplayer ). So the entire second half session he didn't play and didn't join the others. I would like to reward him with a session just for his character, so in a couple of days we will meet at a bar, and drinking beers we will run what i called "Mahmood shenanigans, the adventure of an Alcoholic homeless angry gnome". With us there will be also other two friend of mine, I will provide the PC for them. As you can see from the title i would like either some lore suggestion and some technical suggestion. We will be in a bar so I wont print any map, I will just bring a few D20, player sheets, pen and paper.
Regarding the lore, the players were blackmailed from a detective. The detective knows that they are somehow killers so his told them that if they manage to retrieve a lot of alcohol from the nearby village called "cold spring cider village forever" he will clean their criminal record. The reason why the detective wants all those alcohol is because the PC woke up a giant close to the village and now the giant wants to destroy everything. The detective is busy keeping the giant sleeping with magic and the idea is to inject directly in his veins all the alcohol to keep him a sleep forever. As soon as they arrived in this town they were welcomed too nicely but none of them realized that. So all the group followed a bartender that gave us free drinks besides for Mahmood. Mahmood loves free drinks so why bother follow the bartender just to uncover some hidden city plots ? ( yeah there is a hidden plot in the city, a missing pedant , people killed now and then and this kind of things, I took ispiration from a youtube DND serie). Soooo the group went with the bartender and they were trapped and a lot of things happened, I would say in around 6 hours. I would like to give Mahmood also an adventure. Some ideas ? I was thinking to involve the neighbour village called "cold spring cider village forever and ever". The two villages are always in competition and they accuse each other about weird things that happen to both the villages.
Any idea?
Thaaaaaaaaaaaanks for reading so far ;)

2024.05.14 14:38 BasedArgo "Themistocles: A Dialogue On Justice"—a Modern Take on Classical Dialogues

Hello "armchair philosophers,"
I am writing partly out of concern for the current state of philosophy, and partly out of self-interest. I remember the fascination I felt when I first read one of Plato's early dialogues--it filled me with excitement and desire to participate in the field of philosophy myself. As I continued my journey deeper into modern philosophy, the tedious, arduous method that had become philosophy chiseled away at my enthusiasm until the magic was gone. Is this rice-counting, bean-sorting method really the manner Socrates and Plato employed to discover truth? And while there are some philosophers whos writing still inspires me, I cannot say the same for the current academic state of philosophy.
If this feeling resonates with you, I urge you to consider reading "Themistocles: A Dialogue On Justice" by Argo. This short dialogue emulates the style of Plato's early writings by provoking the reader to critically engage with their own thoughts and reflect on a topic independently rather than being spoon-fed answers. I invite you to step back into ancient Greece with "Themistocles" to perhaps reignite a passion for philosophy--not only in yourself but in others who may feel barred by the pedantry that dominates academic philosophy today.
"Themistocles: A Dialogue On Justice" will be free on kindle from May 14th and 15th, and I would greatly appreciate your thoughts on it. If you enjoy the read, I encourage you to share it with a friend and leave a review on Amazon so other potential readers can find it. Below is an Amazon link which also contains a full description of the dialogue.
Would love to discuss it here as well!

Argo

2024.05.14 14:36 v1olet9 AITAH for getting upset that a random dude blocked me on reddit?

So I was talking to this very nice guy and he scheduled a date. We'd pick me up at home and we'd go to a bar I recommended. But while we were talking, I mentioned I went through a recent break up and that I used to live with the guy.
This random dude asked if I'd manage going to our date, cause the last time he dated a woman that went tru a recent break up she cried with him.
So out of nowhere he blocks me, it says his user is deleted. I feel sort of confused and disappointed. Why people would do it?

2024.05.14 14:28 SenHaKen How to easily get a Roc and avian saddle

This is the strategy I used recently to get my first Roc very early on in the game - before even making my full diamond armor set. It's quite easy to do and overall I think it takes less time and is safer for any gear you have than the "intended" way, that being hunting and killing or soulgazer-ing multiple Rocs and then hunting for trolls for materials for the saddle.
Part 1: Needed materials (minimum, you can add other stuff for utility or whatever)
Part 2: Strategy
  1. First you obviously want to get everything mentioned above. Everything can be found easily in many structures around the world, both safe and unsafe (villager "mansions" with basements, battle towers, etc.)
  2. Next, you want to have waystones at specific locations
    • In a snowy biome, close to ice villages (the common small ones), best to have a few of these
    • In a regular plains or forest area with a nearby rivelake/sea
  3. Once you've found those, the next step is to make a small base in the plans/forest area. Obviously, make sure it's not near a dragon and also not near a village (unless you don't care about keeping villagers alive in that village). You'll be spending quite a bit of time here now
  4. Before your first night, get at least 5 Silex meat from the nearby body of water. If near an ocean, Ika and Crab meat works too. Cook the meat and make your first avian treats
  5. Once night falls, wait for a Roc variant to spawn (Scarlet or Golden) -> variants give double knowledge when using Soulgazer (or avian treats if still at knowledge level 1), giving +200 instead of +100 and therefore requiring only 5 interactions with the Soulgazer. Place your boat near your base, then lure the Roc to it by holding your avian treats. Once it's in the boat, use your name tag on it so it doesn't despawn, then use your Soulgazer and go to sleep.
  6. From now until you make the Roc your pet:
    • Keep it daytime the whole time (sleep as soon as you can)
    • Use your Soulgazer on the Roc when you can
    • Keep farming Silexes/Ikas/Crabs for their meat and making avian treats
    • While waiting for new ones to spawn, start digging dirt. Once you have about a stack or 2, just start building a pillar and then digging down. This will give you some random stuff occasionally due to Treasure Hunting skill. The chance of getting any drop at all is 5% per level of the skill, and out of those 5% approximately 0.016% is the chance for a Troll Tusk (this is 0.016% per each block, which equates to about a 1% chance in any 64 dirt blocks broken), which is the main thing we're after here. This might sound like a very low chance, but considering how many dirt blocks you'll end up breaking the chance is actually quite high. At level 2 Treasure Hunting, I gotten both of my Troll Tusks (one for avian saddle, other one for dragon saddle) within 20 minutes of placing and breaking dirt. On top of this, you can get some other stuff as well, including enchanted stone tools (usually with quite good enchants), enchanted diamond sword, dragon bones and even a pig spawner!
  7. Once you have level 2 knowledge of the Roc, you can start taming it with your treats. On average, you'll get 50-100 taming points per treat, and you'll need 1000 total for the Roc to be tamed. This means that most of the time 20-30 treats should be more than enough. After the Roc is tamed, make sure to use the Soulstone on it so it can respawn when it dies!!!
  8. If you still haven't gotten a Troll Tusk, keep digging for it. If you have, move on to the next step.
  9. Now take all your river fish and any dragon bones you're fine with trading and go to the ice villages (wool armor highly recommended). Find a Fisherman (they usually have a spear in their hands) that's buying the river fish at a 1:1 ratio and sell your fish for Sapphires. You can do the same with your Dragon Bones at a Shaman.
  10. Next, find a Craftsman and level him up fully (usually 1-2 trades are enough for him to level up once, I just went with the cheapest one and spent maybe 5-10 Sapphires to level him up fully). His final trade will ALWAYS be Ice Troll Leather. You should have enough Sapphires left over to buy 3 pieces of leather, but if not just get more by finding and trading more river fish and Dragon Bones. Shamans will also buy Blaze Powder, so that's another alternative for getting Sapphires.
  11. Only the last material left for the saddle now: 2x Amphitere or Stymphalian Bird feathers. Unfortunately, hunting and killing them is damn near impossible in early game (as most RLCraft players know). Fortunately, however, you don't have to do that. You can get both of the feathers in those small floating structures high up in the air (kinda like small "cubes" with a single chest in the middle). Just pillar up to them with your easily-breakable blocks, optionally take a few lockpicks with you in case the chest is locked (or do what I did and look for a different one, they're very common) and see if you got lucky. From my experience, at least half of the chests will have the feathers in them and there will always be at least 2 feathers if they are in there. Added bonus is that you can often find Potions of Wings in the chests too (seems to also be at least half the time), which give you free flight for 3 minutes and can make finding more of these structures a lot easier and faster if you get unlucky with the first one.
And there you have it, you now have all of the stuff you need to craft the avian saddle and a Roc to use it on! A quite simple strategy that requires about as much effort as hunting for trolls for the materials would, but a lot safer and requiring very minimal gear. Plus added bonus from all the additional stuff you get thanks to Treasure Hunting.

Soooo the group went with the bartender and they were trapped and a lot of things happened, I would say in around 6 hours. I would like to give Mahmood also an adventure. Some ideas ? I was thinking to involve the neighbour village called "cold spring cider village forever and ever". 2024.05.14 14:22 BasedArgo Free Access to "Themistocles: A Dialogue On Justice"—a Modern Take on Classical Dialogues

Hello,
I am writing partly out of concern for the current state of philosophy, and partly out of self-interest.
"Themistocles: A Dialogue On Justice" will be free on kindle May 14th and 15th, and I would greatly appreciate your thoughts on it. If you enjoy the read, I encourage you to share it with a friend and leave a review on Amazon so other potential readers can find it. Below is an Amazon link which also contains a full description of the dialogue.
Would love to discuss it here as well!

2024.05.14 14:21 Galacticus06 Chapter II The bargain

Chapter II The bargain
Mello is resting with his head laying on the insect girl-like creature. After it tries to calm him down, he finally finds the courage to speak
"what... What is your name?" He asks nervously
The being looks at Mello in the eyes, he feels as if it was staring in his soul and starts to regret asking.
However, unlike what Millo is thinking, the creature is not bothered by the question and was just trying to recreate the words to her name
"Salicis" it responds
Mello sighs in relief, feeling better as he understands that she is not that easily irritated, which makes Salicis tilt her head.
Without giving it much thought, he asks her
"why are you living here... And why are you treating me so friendly?"
Salicis's expression remains unchanged, almost as if I could not express any emotions through her face
"you are mye queen. I aem making the hive, our house where wy will live and lay eggs"
her tone serious and her voice weirdly hypnotising
Mello is shocked by her intentions and tries to get up to get away from her, but she pushes his head back on her legs before he can move, he is unable to win against her supernatural strength. She was able to slay a bear, after all
Salicis lets out a slightly annoyed growl mixed with clitter of her mandibles
"what yre tryng to du"
her tone is filled with anger as she plans to not let him go, her words come out even more distorted than normal from the anger
Mello realises he has no escape, her predatory look now even more visible to his eyes
"I... I did not plan on leaving"
he lies in hope of saving his skin and not degrading the already dangerous situation
Salicis stares into his eyes for what seems to be an eternity to him. She lets out a low growl
"good, we are going to stay together forover"
although her speech is not the best, her intentions are clear. She plans on staying with her partner forever and never leave him.
However Mello had to start making peace with his new life, so he decides to try and at least make some rules between each other
"y-yes, but you must learn how to live with me. I-I need some freedom to do my routine and hobbies"
he says, anxious of her reaction, but determined to obtain at least a bit of freedom in this forced relationship
Salicis tilts her head, slightly confused by his words
"freedom? Free... from me?" Her tone is confused
"you not going to leave me"
her tone shifts to anger, offended by Mello's request. Her sudden change in attitude makes his eyes widen in shock
"no, no, no! I do not want to leave you! I just need a few moments by myself, to do what I want and need"
Mello hurriedly explains, worried of her reaction
Salicis does not completely trust his words "you do not nyd to be apeart from me. Yu can do what you want, but me will stay with you all the time. You not are going to leave mye side"
she replies with a commanding and angry tone, which makes her speech ability worsen momentarily
Mello reluctantly agrees as he understands that it is the best bargain he could obtain
"yes... That sounds wonderful..."
He smiles awkwardly, trying to show his collaboration. His smile makes Salicis happy
"now we make eggs"
she says as her face closes in to his, the limbs on her back slowly blocking Mello's body.
Mello, however, is terrified and not ready, so he quickly tries to get away from such situation
"woah, woah, woah, woah! Wait, wait! I'm not ready! I don't wanna do it here!" He screams in terror, his whole body shaking as he tries to run move away
Salicis stops right before touching his lips "you not lyke hive?..." She asks with a saddened tone, she spent a lot of time building the hive, although it is still incomplete
"... I understand, hive not completed, not nice making eggs that wey"
she says, making an explanation by herself while Mello slowly calmes down
Mello starts to feel a bit sad as he sees the sadness in her eyes, the only expressive part of her face
"I... Well... We can do it in my room-"
he stops, realising he just gave her permission to do it because he was moved by her emotions. He lets out a surrendered sigh as he fucked himself up

2024.05.14 14:21 TenderDefenders The directional guard system

To preface this, my sword skill is 14 and warfare is 12. It’s my first playthrough of the game, and I love it so far. PS5.
From what I can tell, the directional guard system is pretty redundant in practice. It’s not necessary to match your opponent’s direction to block, perfect block or masterstrike, and changing your attack direction seems to have little to no effect on their chances of blocking (or more likely masterstriking your camera into orbit) despite Bernard insinuating otherwise. The only viable attack direction bar none seems to be top, without fail, 100% of the time. If someone does have a faceplate, they certainly have better protection everywhere else on their body, and the face is always the weak point.
Any Cuman? Top stab. Bandit with an open-face helmet? Top stab. Beefy guys in plate armour and a closed helmet? Believe it or not, top stab. Peasant or archer, mix it up with a top slash.
And, yeah, I understand the head is always going to be the weakest point on someone who isn’t armoured in a non-sensical way. But, then, why doesn’t the directional system play more of a part in defense, considering the semi-realistic nature of the game means anatomy is king - so it only makes sense for attacking to have a pretty tame learning curve of observing your opponent does in fact have a head.
Am I missing something? Is there any reason to attack anywhere except top, with any weapon? Why would I perform a combo when 11 out of 12 of them ONLY have attacks that go straight into the enemies best defended areas, provided it can actually be pulled off without interruption.
I hope the directional system is tied more heavily into defense in the coming sequel.

2024.05.14 14:11 Mkyhhd U.S. bans Russian uranium imports

Joselow, Maxine. The Washington Post; Washington, D.C.. 14 May 2024: A.18.

Move aimed at punishing Moscow and boosting domestic nuclear sector
President Biden on Monday evening signed a bipartisan bill prohibiting Russian imports of enriched uranium, the main fuel used by nuclear power plants, a move intended to cut off one of the last significant flows of money from the United States to Russia amid the war in Ukraine.
Congress took swift action to ban Russian oil and gas imports a month after the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. But sanctions on uranium imports have taken much longer, in part because Russia supplies roughly 20 percent of U.S. nuclear fuel, leading some lawmakers to fear disruptions to the nation's 93 nuclear reactors.
"It's kind of ridiculous that it took as long as it did to get to this stage," said Scott Melbye, executive vice president of mining company Uranium Energy and president of the Uranium Producers of America, a trade group. "But we're just glad that we got here."
American companies pay around $1 billion a year for enriched uranium from Rosatom, Russia's state nuclear power conglomerate. These payments have continued even after documents revealed last year that Rosatom had been working to supply the Russian arms industry with components, technology and raw materials for missile fuel.
The bipartisan bill will ban uranium imports from Moscow beginning 90 days after its enactment. It will provide waivers until 2028 for utilities that would be forced to shut down nuclear reactors once Russian supplies are cut off. The bill also frees up $2.7 billion passed in previous legislation to build out the domestic uranium processing industry.
"This new law reestablishes America's leadership in the nuclear sector," national security adviser Jake Sullivan said in a statement Monday. "It will help secure our energy sector for generations to come."
The bill passed the House in December, but it had stalled for months in the Senate, where Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) had blocked the measure over unrelated disputes. In a development that surprised some observers, Cruz dropped his opposition last month, and the measure then passed the Senate by unanimous consent, meaning no senators objected to it.
"Russia's chokehold on America's uranium supply is coming to an end," Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), a bill sponsor, said on the Senate floor on Wednesday. "[Russian President Vladimir] Putin's war machine has now lost one of its cash cows. America is finally starting to take back our nuclear energy security as well as our energy future."
Officials at the Energy Department and the National Security Council had discussed the possibility of taking executive action to ban Russian uranium imports if Congress did not act, Bloomberg News reported.
Biden has set an ambitious goal of reaching 100 percent clean electricity by 2035. Nuclear reactors generate more than half of emissions-free electricity in the United States, and supporters say they can play a key role in the country's transition away from fossil fuels.
Yet the U.S. nuclear power industry has recently faced financial challenges, including spiraling costs of the new modular designs it is testing. Those difficulties may continue even after companies are no longer reliant on imported uranium.
The United States' dependence on Russian uranium dates back to a 1993 nuclear disarmament program soon after the Cold War ended. Under the program, dubbed Megatons to Megawatts, the United States bought 500 metric tons of uranium from dismantled Russian nuclear warheads and converted it to nuclear reactor fuel.
At the time, many policymakers in Washington hailed the deal as a win-win: Moscow got desperately needed cash in exchange for giving U.S. utilities cheap fuel and placating arms-control advocates. But today, some experts say the program had the unintended consequence of delivering such inexpensive Russian fuel that U.S. and European companies struggled to compete.
More than two years after Russia invaded Ukraine, the United States largely lacks its own uranium enrichment capacity. The nuclear energy company TerraPower, which was founded by Bill Gates, has been forced to delay the opening of a new nuclear plant by at least two years, in part because it has pledged not to use Russian enriched uranium.
The new legislation could help. It unlocks $2.7 billion in funding for domestic uranium enrichment that Congress conditionally approved in a spending bill last year.
The funding could allow the company Centrus to expand its enrichment facility in Ohio with "thousands of additional centrifuges to replace Russian imports with American production," spokeswoman Lindsey Geisler said in an email.
Jeff Navin, director of external affairs for TerraPower, which has signed an agreement with Centrus to collaborate on fueling its Natrium reactor in Wyoming, said in an email that the funding is "expected to spur job creation, technological advancement and boost the U.S. nuclear industry's global competitiveness."
In August, Biden established a new national monument near the Grand Canyon, putting the site off-limits to future uranium mining. The move did not affect an existing uranium mine owned by Energy Fuels, which recently ramped up work as growing demand and global instability pushed uranium prices higher.
Though some environmentalists support nuclear power, others say there are cheaper options and have voiced concerns that the country lacks a long-term plan for storage of nuclear waste. Still others have warned that radioactive dust from uranium mining could contaminate the drinking water of nearby communities.
Asked about these concerns, Curtis Moore, senior vice president of marketing and corporate development at Energy Fuels, said modern environmental regulations have made uranium mining much safer over the last half-century. He said the company's mine near the Grand Canyon poses "zero" risk to water supplies.
"To oppose modern uranium mining is akin to opposing electric vehicles today because cars in the '50s didn't have seat belts," Moore said. "It's really shortsighted. Uranium is absolutely essential to the fight against climate change."

2024.05.14 14:10 Reasonable_School813 Gut issues, don’t know what it could be

I’m 20f. I have had some issues with my gut for about 4 years, trying to self diagnose and treat it holistically. I have paid attention to what makes me bloat, my stomach cramp and hurt, and my habits in the restroom. I think my issue might be gluten, but I’m not 100% sure. I have been eating the exact same thing every day, except for Mothers Day and my stomach is acting up. I start my morning with sourdough toast with cream cheese, cold brew coffee with oat milk creamer, acidophilus probiotic, and a prebiotic with fiber. I have a nut, oats, and dried fruit granola bar for a snack mid-morning, and then around lunchtime I have 2 clementines and a rice cake. For dinner the last 2 weeks I have had southwest chicken and rice (white jasmine rice, chicken breasts, black beans, corn, cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes, taco seasoning, and heavy whipping cream), with an avocado or guacamole to top it. Sometimes if I’m still hungry I have a piece of sourdough cinnamon toast. I don’t drink any juices or sodas, just cold brew in the morning and then water throughout the day. Very occasionally I’ll have a prebiotic soda. My stomach has done great since following that daily, but on Mother’s Day I had a sourdough burger bun, and gluten free pasta and Im back to where I started. I have a rumbly gut, bathroom almost immediately after I eat anything, and it’s not a healthy movement. Some things I know I definitely can’t eat: hot coffee (I think the acidity?), regular bread or pasta, red pasta sauce, dairy milk (completely fine in small amounts, I can also eat cheese and yogurt with no issues). I don’t think it’s Celiac disease, IBS, or colon related anything. Is it just a gluten intolerance and my body needs time to readjust? Any thoughts on what it could be and how I can treat it?

2024.05.14 14:07 TOMMY_POOPYPANTS Jaybird Journals #5: Jay flexes his power, shows his fandom

These are the tales of the AtariAge moderator Jaybird 3rd, a moderator with spectacularly poor judgment. As seen on the Intellivision Amico Q&A thread: https://amicoage.neocities.org where all the page numbers can be found.
Page 203, January 24, 2020: Jay tries to lay down the law, but forgets that the people he kicked can't view his words of wisdom.
I don't want to stir up the controversy yet again (so feel free to skip this post if you're tired of hearing about it), but I suspect that CPUWIZ posted his message in both places because some of the people who've been blocked from this thread continue to follow it—for example, there's nothing preventing them from logging out and viewing it in guest mode—and that this was simply a way of ensuring that they all saw it. I don't think the message was meant for most of you here.
I don't know how many times we've all gone out of our way to say that rational concerns and criticisms are welcomed and encouraged, so it is regrettable that it became necessary to block anyone at all. The concerns that they initially raised were also raised about other console projects in the past—and by some of the same people—and they ultimately proved to be right in the case of the RetroVGS/Chameleon in particular. The problem is not that these concerns were raised at all, but that even after they were satisfactorily addressed (in many instances by Tommy himself), those people would not let them go, and they ultimately escalated into baseless accusations and borderline paranoia. That kind of behavior, no matter by whom practiced, cannot be allowed to run rampant.
However, I for one am determined not to allow all that drama to detract from the discussion here. We'll all do our best to keep it positive and constructive.
Page 254, January 30, 2020: Jay reminds everyone what he's best at. Is it moderating a community discussion? NO! It's daydreaming about a forgotten video game from forty years ago.
When I play classic Night Stalker, I usually play it on the Aquarius also. The original Intellivision version is great, of course, but I've always found it a bit sluggish even on the fastest setting. The Aquarius version feels just right to me, and I'm pleased to see that the Amico version seems to be paced similarly. The Aquarius version also solved the problem of not being able to move and shoot at the same time (because the Aquarius hand controllers generate different Gray codes with fewer conflicting values). The fire buttons do take some getting used to, but with practice, you can actually use both controllers simultaneously, moving with one hand and firing with the other.
I'm amazed at what I've seen so far of the Amico version of Night Stalker, and I especially love the multiplayer mode! I'm looking forward to trying it!
(needless to say, the Amico version of Night Stalker was never seen again, and is very likely not going to happen)
Page 258, the next day, Jay compares what he believes is happening at Intellivision Entertainment with his heroes of years ago:
That would be very much in the tradition of Intellivision, going all the way back to David Stifel's "Game Factory" for the Entertainment Computer System (ECS).
Speaking of the ECS ... I know you've got a lot on your plate already, but I hope you can find room for a modernized version of David Warhol's "Mind Strike." It's an excellent game that deserved more exposure than it got on the ECS back in the day.
I suspect there are very few people alive who know what the Intellivision Entertainment Computer System is, and even fewer that care, but one of them was certainly Jaybird The Terrible Moderator (Retired).

2024.05.14 14:03 That-Bumblebee1495 Did I overreacted after what my hairdresser told me?

Sorry for any mistakes, English is not my first language. It’s a long story (get your popcorn ready)
So my(33f) whole life I have a very sensitive skin. It’s mostly painful but manageable for me to do manicure and pedicure, I don’t go to cosmetologist as I have a high risk of getting an allergy or redness. However, I like to dye my hair and I have been to numerous hairdressers as well as done it myself for about 15 years
Three years ago I had severe health problems which caused me to lose half of my hair (among other symptoms) and at one point I almost died. At that time I stopped dyeing my hair and chopped it off due to bad quality. 2,5 years later I’ve been feeling good, my hair grew out and I decided it’s time to make my 2 dreams come true: to donate my hair so they can make a wig for cancer patients and to dye the bob that will be after the haircut bright pink
I’ve spent a lot of time to find a hairdresser that would fit me. The one that chopped my hair didn’t work with bright colors and actually chopped off 10cm more than I asked. I was sad but ok as it went for charity
After a few month I finally found the one that had pretty good works and the price was good enough
When I came to the appointment It felt weird, I think we didn’t clicked, but were pretty respectful towards each other. I told her right away that I have sensitive skin and she seemed ok with that
Although I didn’t like that she didn’t ask for my permission to take photos or videos for her social media, and I was just told that she will take them after she finishes her work. I swallowed it as I always supportive of hairdressers, makeup artists etc. I loved her work on me and was absolutely happy, but during the filming she was irritated that I’m posing not like she wanted although I never got the instructions
A few days later she posted an IG reel with me and she put a filter on my face for a preview picture. Mind you, I almost haven’t recognized myself. She never asked me if I’m ok with that. I was livid but once again swallowed it because it’s so hard to find a good hairdresser where I live
During the next appointment she held her blowing dryer too close to my head that it felt like it burned a hole in my head. I politely asked to hold it a bit further and she reacted normally, and tried to do so. Sometimes she pulled my hair too much and I made some quiet noises as I can’t control my reaction
During the third appointment she fucked up with bleaching my roots and I got a light strip 1 cm wide. At first it wasn’t noticeable due to the lighting and I saw it the next day and sent her a message right away. She never apologized and tried to make it seem like it was my fault, but eventually said to come to her salon to fix it (for free ofc). Her fixing didn’t help that time and the next one. So I had to walk like that for 2 months. She never acknowledged her fault, and newer apologized. Okay, things happen, I understand. I swallowed my frustration once again
Now to the main problem. I’ve been at her salon for 5-6 times and after at least the last three of them I’ve noticed that she washed my had very bad leaving A LOT of dye. This caused a very painful itching after only 2-3 hours after the appointment was finished and the last time this itching continued for two weeks. Okay, she has only 3-4 years of experience, I get it, mistakes happen. I thought that I would talk to her about this and it will be better
Yesterday was my last appointment. I addressed my concerns in a very polite manner, she tried to break my speech answering that it’s the dye that is so strong or the bleach causes the irritation and she is not sure it can be fixable. I told her that I have years of experience and never had this problem before. I’m just asking her to wash my head more thoroughly. She agreed to try
Well, the issue seemed resolved, she have bleached my roots and the part she fucked up before, washed my hair and started to blow drying it before dyeing. During the blow drying part I felt that she holds the blow dryer too close to my head again (mind you, when it’s just hot I remain silent, I say something only when I can’t bear the pain), I again asked her very politely to hold it a bit further
In response she started to raise her voice (not screaming) telling me how it irritates her that I have sensitive skin and I always say that it’s too hot, to painful or that I have allergic reaction. She said it’s uncomfortable for her to work like this with me and this is the last time [she allows me to say things like that]. She said that next time things will be different
I was shocked and said that I didn’t choose to have sensitive skin or get an allergic reaction. What should I have to do? To shut up when I’m in unbearable pain or have an allergy?
She responded only that she is uncomfortable with me and her other clients never have this problem
I said okay and sat completely silent and shocked knowing I will never be back as it was the last nail in the coffin
She dyed my hair, washed it again (surprisingly, she did it the exact way I asked for) and dried it. During drying she once again held the blow dryer so close to my head that I had to tilt in other direction from her in absolute pain and put my cold fingers on that place for a half a minute. She just remained silent looking more irritated and started to hold the blow dryer too far like on purpose
After she finished I paid for the service, came back home and blocked her. I never want to see her again or interact with her
Now, to my question: my husband said that blocking her was an overreaction, and I could just unfollowed her (she didn’t follow me). He didn’t say that in any rude way or so, just his opinion. I didn’t think I overreacted, but maybe I did? Idk, what do you think? Am I wrong in my reaction?

2024.05.14 13:53 crispypotat0o My friend blocked for the second time because of his gf after saying he won’t.

Hello guys I’m abit upset with what to do. So me and him have been friends a year now and we met through my online bestie let’s call her Rose. And we got close he told me a lot about his personal life things and he has never said anything weird or flirty he is younger than us also and me and Rose have him as a little bother. So we used to game a lot together and talk all three of us and he got a gf and he was normal in the beginning but as time went on he got abit distant from me? I didn’t think much of it I didn’t say anything or bother him. And then I got blocked for no reason. Cus we hadn’t even talk for a while I didn’t want to bother him. So my bestie Rose called him out on his behaviour and said that I did nothing to be blocked and it’s ass move and I was genuinely upset. And he ended up removing her but not blocking her out of anger. Anyways a week after he asked me to get into game chat and he apologised and he said his gf had an issue with me but he explained to her that there’s nothing between us and we are like sis and bro and nothing else because apparently she has been cheated before but it made no sense because she has no issue with Rose that he knows WAY longer. Anyways he was normal again for a few days until he got weird and distant again. We played like two times ? And never alone (this is important for later) So I was like AGAIN I won’t bother him. And a few days ago he joined game chat with me and my bestie Rose and he said that his gf is fighting him over me again and I was like but why? I haven’t even bothered you. And he said that she just doesn’t like me and wants him to block me again and he told her that he won’t because i haven’t done anything to her or to their relationship for her to act so paranoid and I said to him we haven’t even played u been so distant and I haven’t bothered u and he said he knows and he doesn’t understand why she’s so obsessed with me and she literally said that the two times we played because she wasn’t home at the time and he plays in secret with me the two times we played lol which he doesn’t … he literally tells her and she has been infront when he games with me so she has seen we don’t talk weird ahit even on our messages we don’t say weird shit . Anyways he said he wouldn’t block me again for her Bcs it’s not fair to me and stuff and anyways… I got blocked again two days after him saying that and telling us how it’s nice to fianlly have someone to talk about this and finally talk and laugh... and I don’t know what to do?do I confront him? Do I leave it?do I accept the next apology? What do I do?
Edit: thank you to anyone replying. I appreciate you taking the time. I am going to leave things as they are , focus on the friends I have and be drama free and as someone said if they come around cool if they don’t then that’s okay too.
