Try not to laugh here, I don’t know one thing about automotive mechanics/auto body, but I’ve always been curious. Am I crazy to want to slowly learn to fix it? Can I learn? Or is this not an entry level type thing? Where would I start to learn? What do you recommend? I hear people say watch YouTube, I’ll definitely do that. Any other suggestions?

What is working:
-vehicles are tools to use, we don’t like to spend money on things that will just wear out. We don’t feel bad about the damage/miles we are putting on. -we have access to a heavy duty/automotive mechanic shop with a hoist for big trucks. We do all our own maintenance.
-The 3500 is fabulous, reliable and fits us for now.
-everything we own is a standard. We love manual transmissions and the way they handle on our roads.
-the dogs fit in the back of the Rav
-all of our vehicles are off-road capable.
-the Rav is our day-hunting vehicle
-no tech. We hate screens in vehicles.
-easy to work on. We prefer older vehicles for this reason.
-during fire season I keep the 3500 hooked up for evacuation, he takes the 250 and I drive the Rav.
What’s not working:
-we have long legs and cant fit a second car seat in the Rav and that is currently my daily driver.
-I don’t want to use the 3500 for short trips.

-when the 3500 is hooked up we end up fighting over vehicles. The single cab means I have to take my son to my events because He wouldn’t be able to get work done without a truck.
To consider: logging roads, mountain passes, literally everything goes off road every day, snow for 5 months, two-lane highways with no dividers or lights. Accidents here are either rollovers, moose impacts or head-ons with semis.
What do we replace the Rav with? My parents have a 2018 Rav and we all tolerate it. Do we get a 2500 Longhorn and consolidate or do we keep a separate truck and town car? My dream vehicle is a mid-aughts discovery body with a full swap-out…but then there’s safety…

This is not me asking for a raise cause I just simply want more money. There are some circumstances that are going to play into this. I have been with the company for about 9 months.
I work at a shop which my job is to maintain company vehicles. I get $30/hr I’m an experienced automotive and heavy duty mechanic (3rd year, no ticket.. yet). I’ve done everything with help from other managers and engineers to create and integrate inspection and maintenance workflow into the current system, I have set up the shop with everything I need to do the work (air compressor, air lines, tools, hoist, supplies, etc). I need to hire more help as I am at capacity and my back log is getting to long to frequently, I can’t even take a sick day without worrying I’m going to drown for the next 3 days after. Anyways the plan was for me to get everything going hire help and essentially manage the whole operation. Since I wasn’t ticketed they were going to hire a journeymen so to be in compliance with local rules, we interviewed some a while back who I would be in charge of and they were going to offer $38/hr, however that did not work out tropical journeymen rate around here is 45-50/hr.
So me being the problem solving company man I am I said “look boss I have more then enough hours to get my ticket I just need to study and challenge the exams”. He said great let’s get it done and obviously more money will come with the completion of this.
I’m getting close to that point now where I’ll be writing my exams in the next few weeks. I can’t help but think if they say how much are you expecting, what do say? I have the $38 baseline for a journeymen to work “below” me then on top of that I have to take care of the daily managerial duty’s such as ordering supplies, planning work, tracking expenses, etc on top of regular and unplanned work. My work as far as mechanical is very light, not much major repair is going to happen if any.
So I think to myself I know I could go to regular shop with my ticket and get 45-50/hr but I don’t really want to do that kind of work. I like where I work, I’m left alone and not micromanaged at all and I’m trusted to do what’s needed to get the job done. I fell like taking into consideration the job is “lighter” than the typical mechanic that would demand top wage but also that I’m running the whole show including hiring 1 or 2 mechanics over the next year what I should ask for. I was thinking $50 would be ideal but $45 is not bad? I’m not sure how to price this.

In my depreciating assets fund, every month there is a chunk of money taken out for building infrastructure, shop upgrades/maintenance and special tools. There is actually a large amount of items that come out of this fund that I basically have no control over. Included in these upgrades are EV charging infrastructure inside and outside the shop, hoist replacement and repair, etc.
I also pay $5000/mo for shop “rent” but on top of that I am paying separately to replace the roof.
My question is this - is it “legal” to change an employees pay to fund what I consider business expenditures through net profit? I believe their argument will be that is part of the calculation because it will make money for my department but none of it actually will. Electric vehicles are a decade away from being a truly viable and profitable platform. We have over $500k invested, sold one actual EV at break even and have recouped $200 in charging fees.
