2024.05.14 10:31 mg1omm3rt Indigenous Documentaries on Colonization?

Hello, I don't know much about history, but I'd like to learn more about colonization. I think because we are still living under the effects of colonization (I was born in Ontario), much of the damage it's done has been buried (for example, rape and forced abortions in residential schools, sexual and physical abuse in training schools) to ensure we keep serving the system. I would like to watch some documentaries from the indigenous perspective so I can learn more, and I'm hoping for some recommendations. The education system really watered down what we did to indigenous people so I want to watch docs where that perspective is centred. Thanks!!!!

2024.05.14 10:29 OrganicLibrary6529 21F Looking for Long Term Pen Pal

Hello! I am 21F, living in the US looking for a long term pen pal! I don’t have a preference in gender but would like to stay between my age range, (20-30). I am open to both US and international penpals!
About me: I enjoy the outdoors and am currently in school to work in conservation. I love being in nature by going on hikes and meditating or simply practicing yoga on the beach. I have a special place in my heart for the arts and always crave being creative in some kind of form. Whether its sketching, going to museums, writing, listening to music ( indie, jazz and classical are my favorites!) watching films. I also love to read, although if I’m being honest, I don’t have too much time to do so, and i love anime as well! (studio ghibli! ) Another hobby of mine is cooking and I would love someone to share or trade recipes with!
I prefer starting off through email and switching over to written letters over time. I would love to write long letters about anything and everything (perhaps little stickers or drawings as well!) and stay in touch for a long time with a box full of old letters that I can look back on when I am gray and old. :)
Please feel free to reach out if you are interested! Thank you ♡

2024.05.14 10:26 Jaccalope Looking to TEFL in Shanghai or Hangzhou, not sure how to proceed

I'm born and raised in Montreal and thus hold a Canadian passport, but I'm originally Chinese! I speak fluent Mandarin but cannot read nor write Chinese characters. I'm fully proficient in English and French, but would rather only dabble in the former for now. Graduated with a undergrad BCom degree back in 2022.
I understood that my bachelor's degree and TEFL certification are enough to land me a job offer in English teaching, but I'm not sure where to look for opportunities. Should I be doing door-to-door with schools? What kind of apps/websites can I apply?
Also, regarding the visa, are most of your simply on a tourist visa receiving your pay on WeChat after every class? Or are most of you on a 1y working visa and working as salaried employees? What is the recommendation for someone like me who would probably only stay for 3-4 months?
Thanks so much for your help!

2024.05.14 10:21 vinnyjsep Camera suggestions!!

Hey all,
I’m am a senior film student. This upcoming school year I’m going to be the DP for my senior thesis. I’m looking to purchase my first camera for this project. I would like my thesis to be the forefront of my portfolio, so I’m putting all my resources into this. I would also like to continue to use this camera post-grad as professional use.
Currently I am stuck between a C70 and a FX3. I would love to hear people’s experiences with either. However, if there’s a camera you recommend that’s neither of these, please comment as well!
Here’s my main criteria: - Budget: ~$7000 - can shoot in log - Cinematography focused (I’m not looking to film any sports media nor am I looking to do photography) - can shoot at least 4K 24f - full frame sensor - wide range of lenses (without the need of an adapter, but if need be I’m fine with using one) - Portable (I know this is kinda targeted, relatively, against the C70 in comparison to the FX3)
Honestly, im very flexible with all my “criteria” but I’d love to know the community’s thoughts your preferences in terms of cameras that’s meant for cinematography! Overall, I’m looking for something that’s a bit more intermediate to advanced oriented that will keep me afloat from undergrad to post-grad. Thanks yall!

2024.05.14 10:21 Advanced_Struggle_44 ABYG FOR TELLING HER NA HINDI ALIGNED YUNG WORDS NYA SA ACTIONS NYA?

this is a wlw story.
she's my blockmate this 2nd sem, 1st year college kami and same field. she caught my eye nung first day, and ganon din sya sakin. she's nonchalant type, ako naman oa. very different personalities kami. so straight to the point, nagkaron kami ng something. mu kami, like magulong ugnayan. she's always assuring me na she's interested, na she wanna work this out with me, na marami syang nilu-look forward with me pero never ko naman naramdaman na she mean it. hindi sa may trust issues ako or what, pero hindi kasi nagtutugma mga sinasabi nya. everytime na nag oopen up ako ng concern ko na i can't feel na interested sya sakin (kasi ikaw ba naman iwan on delivered messages for hours, tapos ako i always make time for her), sasabihin nya lang na 'thank you for telling me, at least alam ko na gagawin ko' pero wala naman talaga syang ginagawa to change it. I've been very patient with her, iniisip nalang na baka nag aadjust pa sya, but no. sinasabi nya pa na it takes two to tango, pero ako lagi yung nag eexert ng effort saming dalawa. binibigyan nya'ko lagi ng assurance na hindi naman nya ginagawa. since nonchalant type sya, she can't really express herself. pero kasi naniniwala ako na kapag gusto may paraan. yung kahit small things lang, it matters to me na. kaso wala talaga. until naramdaman ko na backburner and for convenience nya lang ako. i stayed because I really wanted to work it with her and ayokong isipin nya na hindi ko sya naiintindihan.
lahat ng problems nya sa buhay iniintindi ko and dinadamayan ko sya sa lahat. binibigay ko rin yung sa tingin kong kailangan nya, which is time, space, and understanding. sa kanya pa nanggaling na kapag may problem kami, we communicate it. pero ako lang yung vocal samin. until last week, she ended things between us. isang bagsakan nya lang din sinabi lahat ng concern nya about us. hindi naman ako nagkulang sa pagtatanong kung okay lang ba sya.
she told me her personal reasons. yung sa family nya, and for sure yung financial din. di rin kasi biro yung tuition sa nursing school. plus hindi sya natutuwa sa nangyayari sa acads nya, and i understand that.
so can you tell me, ABYG samin kasi nag expect ako kahit paulit ulit naman na nagpakita sya ng inconsistency and lack of interest?

2024.05.14 10:19 Subject-Victory-7135 Educ or Nursing?

Hi! Badly need advice for reference. I took the admission exam in West Visayas State University, which is my dream school. Nursing is my first choice but sadly, I’m not eligible to take their aptitude test. For my second option, I passed the admission exam — BSED major in science.
I look for other university with affordable tuition fee for nursing. I enrolled in University of Iloilo with 50% scholarship. Regret malala talaga since I didn’t applied for other university na meron din palang scholarship offers. Inuna ko pa i-maintain yung grades ko ngayong SHS na nakaabot naman sa 95 gen. av. for scholarship purposes pa sana pero last week ko lang na realize na too late na. My next option is Iloilo Doctors’ but they’re already close for BSN. 😭
I’m still uncertain whether to choose WVSU(Educ) or Nursing sa UI. I have a plan to finish two courses but it’s the battle between tuition fee and the quality of teaching, na reasons din kung bakit until now, undecided pa rin ako kung ano muna uunahin. If ever na i-pursue muna yung nursing, mas malaki kasi yung sahod abroad.
Pls. help🥲
I’ll gladly take your opinion and criticism.

2024.05.14 10:15 purrincesskittens A job that allows you to sit down? But decent pay?

Asking for my dad who is almost sixty never finished school just got a certification in some kind of machinery relating to ACs he has been getting jobs mainly based off work experience (he works with machinery putting large machine together to be shipped off currently) he is thinking of either charging career paths or branching put into something else by going back to school for something my community College has the free tuition thing and I have had good experience there so he is thinking of apply if he can just pick something to do.
He needs a career that he is able to sit occasionally as he has bad knees. He has experience working with machinery and first aid medical knowledge and skills (he has considered going for some kind of nursing which my school has a extensive program for). He considered pharmacy technician but I was just told by my advisor that he wouldn't really be able to sit and its very fast pass.
So I'm now turning to the internet to help find him a career path. Pay needs to be decent as he would be the sole financial provider once I move out in two to three years when I graduate and my mom is disabled and can't work.

2024.05.14 10:13 Cadillac-Blood Book recommendation - The Dark Side of Skin by Jeferson Tenório

Hi all! Hopefully I chose the right flair.
I just finished reading this book and I just need to share it someone.
Jeferson Tenório is a black Brazilian writer and his romance The Dark Side of Skin provides a very good insight into racism in Brazil, especially in the south of Brazil (the whitest part of the country with... questionable ideologies). It's fiction, but the topics are very real. I had to take breaks between reading sessions because it got to me so bad. So not a light read, but the way Jeferson is able to place us in the character's skin is MASTERFUL. This book got Brazil's equivalent of the nobel prize for literature and it shows.
The book is written as a "letter" to the protagonist's father, a school teacher who was assassinated by the police. The protagonist tells the father's story and by doing so constructs an entire biography of life in Brazil as a black person.
I recommend this book to any non-Brazilian interested in understanding how racism plays out in another country. And for Brazilians, I recommend it especially because it has seen attempts from politicians to ban it from schools' reading list. This is how I found out about the book. Politicians are using the sexual scenes within the book as excuse, saying it's too erotic, in an attempt to censor discussions on racism from schools.
I would be so happy if they fail and students are exposed to the reality of black Brazilians. And I would be very happy if the author got support and the book got more visibility.
I read it in original Portuguese, but an English version (as the title of my post shows) and even a Mandarin and an Italian version are available. The book isn't long. Please give it a look!

2024.05.14 10:07 lotus1197 Newbie help

I’ve been painting for 3 years now and want to start trying to play.
Anyone that could help me figure out a good 500/1000 pt list from the units I have would be greatly appreciated. Doesn’t have to be super competitive, just something to have fun with but has some synergy.
I’d really love to have 2 500pt lists as school gets out in 2 weeks and I want to play with my sons.
And I can always add more recommended units especially since I’m kind of light on HQ’s.

2024.05.14 10:06 FantasticSeesaw5169 Trying to transfer math major, what are some things to have?

As the title says I want to transfer after my sophomore year to a different college and wanted insight into specifically what's good for a math major. I know grad school for math they focus on grades/GRE score since math research really doesn't exist in the traditional sense and is very very uncommon, does this trend apply to transfers as well? What kinds of things should I include? For reference I am a current UT Austin student and the schools I am applying to transfer to are Cornell, Princeton, and Dartmouth, what kinds of things should I try and do? Current stats are 3.81 GPA with this semester average being a 4.0, with 3 clubs at my college and a good professor recommendation albeit in geology and not math. What else should I aim for?

2024.05.14 10:06 CamelMysterious5335 Do you hate school and why? And how do you get through it

“Also kind of a rant”
INTPs are either in uni or are impaired on a low level school. I’m personally one of those people that hates school. I don’t wanna become an employee and school feels like slavery. How do I get through it.
People recommend finding a “smart buddy” but there seems to be no sign of intelligent life here. I’m on graphic design school and nobody here can make something beautiful. I can, but not for someone else.
I get low grades because I don’t care about any of these subjects, and I always end up having to catch up at the end of the year because of procrastination.
A lot of companies want me as an intern due to my talent. I can choose any company, they don’t choose me. I haven’t met anyone like that here. They are all really attentive and clueless (and even scared) but they can be happy if they get accepted they stress about finding a company. Yet they all think good grades transfer over to intelligence and getting an internship.
How do I deal with my own academic incompetence and with the incompetence from the people around me.
I feel like an eagle growing up with chickens in a school made for chickens.
Am I a dumbass? Or are they
Am I arrogant? Idk
And I want to know your opinion of course

2024.05.14 09:50 Altruisticannon Help with online applications please

Hello, I am an ER nurse with a little over 2 years experience in an ER that is a level 1 trauma center, stroke center, and STEMI center. I’ve been told over and over again by coworkers that this experience should punch my ticket to any other job I want, and yet when I apply to other positions at other hospitals in my area, I’m just hearing crickets.
I’m wondering if any of you have advice on the online application process? To be honest, I have my job now because I was an ED Tech in this ER while I was in school and even getting the tech job, I knew someone who was able to help me out.
I feel like an idiot, but how important is a cover letter for every application? I have fixed up my resume and always upload and include that, but does anyone have some tricks on how to get my online application to stand out? Any help would be appreciated!

2024.05.14 09:46 ikothsowe Ratios Reset After Surgery? (T1)

I've been T1 for over 30 years. I also have "high insulin resistance", and for years I've been using two 21 unit basal shots per day, and a carb ratio of 2.5 bolus units to 10g of carbs.
Or, at least those were my numbers until bowel surgery about a month ago.
The hospital diabetes nurse recommended that, post op, I start with a basal of 5 and a bolus of 1:10, gradually increasing as needed, while my plumbing and appetite settled down.
A month later, I'm eating normally, and healing well. But my insulin numbers are still crazy low compared to pre-op. I've settled on a basal of 12 units, twice a day, and a bolus of 1 unit to 10g of carb. My sensor readings are as good, if not slightly better than before.
I'm certainly not complaining, but I'm curious if this insulin reset is a common side effect of abdominal surgery? Is this now my "new normal?"

2024.05.14 09:44 Strange_Instance6120 Emergency Appointment...

I have a dilema. My program start date is 1st of August and my school recommends being there 2 weeks before that to complete testing so really around Mid July.
1st date available for my consulate is 3 September which obviously won't work. Do I qualify to submit a request for an expedited appointment? I hear you only get one shot at that so I don't want to waste it.
What supporting docs will I need to make my case strong and also around when do you think I should submit the request?

2024.05.14 09:35 sai799 Should I get another undergraduate degree at 25?

I want to immigrate to either canada or the netherlands by studying there and because the degree i hold right now isn’t very in demand i can’t apply for jobs so I thought of getting masters program but mostly they will ask for letter of recommendation which idk if i can provide since only two professors reply and they just asked to sent them the form and sign it nothing more i emailed two others and put effort to provide them with some works that I’ve done in their courses and my cv it has been 6 months no reply. Also I honestly feel like most master’s programs for my undergraduate major is very limited or not in demand i have English language degree btw so if you have any advice I would appreciate it -
This’s just a vent maybe idk : I got two programs offer that end with employment rn in my home country which is great cuz i can maybe ask for professional references but they are not related to my undergraduate program also they’re all do urine tests and well… I may start to take medication for my anxiety and probably hopefully not antidepressants soon :( I’m kinda very excited for these two programs
