2024.05.14 19:30 Ok_Operation1051 CMV: smacking your head against a table to make banging sounds is a valid form of music

i just saw another post on here that detailed why mumble rap is not real music, and it made me realise that if anything, music can be whatever you want it to be. smacking your head against a table to make banging sounds may not qualify as music according to cultural norms but if it resonates with you emotionally, who am i to say that its not? some people like the sound of a skull bouncing off of a table and/or hard surface.
by the same token, 5 minutes of uninterrupted silence can also qualify as music. a lot of classical works emphasize the silence in between notes just as much as they do the notes themselves; thus if the silence is significant and elicits emotion, it should, logically, also be counted as music. think the silence you hold after a sombre speech, or the silence an audience sits in to honour a dead person - except engineered and arranged by a talented musician, to be performed for a crowd. this is real by the way.
on a serious note, music to me has always been more compelling when its borne of emotion. nirvana for example isnt particularly virtuosic or technically difficult, but they deliberately played like shit to convey the anguish behind the songwriting. it was raw, unrefined and directionless a lot of the time, sure - and lyrically incoherent - but it was the directionlessness and anger that spoke to people. i never really understood the modern avant garde type art that people like to take the piss out of, but irrespective of how i feel, i cant really see a valid argument for why it cannot be art if it has meaning to the people who enjoy it.

2024.05.14 19:25 kurec0 Can I receive 417 working holiday visa if I am not in my home country when I post my visa application?

In order to receive working holiday to Japan I need to be physically in my home country in order to succesfully receive the visa. If I am going to be in Japan as a foreigner with visa I can receive my working holiday visa for australia? (Or do I need to prepare some documents that I have only in my home?). Regarding the health examination on the visa application there is yes or no and If I click on yes(which is needed I guess in order to succesfully get the visa) There is a text bar(for details about the examination) so it is appropriate to just say: I completed the health exam on 14.5.2024 for example? Or do I need to scan some paper from my doctor in order to succesfully receive 417 working holiday visa? Because the thing is that the distance from my home country to japan or australia is very far away. But the distance from Japan to australia is not that far away that is the reason.

2024.05.14 19:23 tempmailgenerator Resolving Background Color Display Issues in Outlook for HTML Emails

Understanding HTML Email Design Challenges in Outlook

Email marketing is a pivotal aspect of digital communication strategies, often leveraging HTML templates to create visually appealing and engaging messages. However, designers frequently encounter challenges when ensuring these emails display correctly across different email clients, with Outlook being particularly notorious for its rendering issues. Among these, setting the background color in HTML email templates can be problematic, leading to inconsistencies that detract from the intended user experience. This hurdle stems from Outlook's use of Microsoft Word's rendering engine, which interprets HTML and CSS differently than web browsers and other email clients.
To navigate these challenges, it's essential to understand the nuances of Outlook's rendering engine and the specific CSS properties it supports. Crafting emails that look consistent across all platforms requires a blend of technical knowledge, creativity, and a keen eye for detail. This introduction aims to shed light on why background color issues occur in Outlook and provide a foundation for exploring solutions that ensure your emails look as intended, regardless of the client. With the right approach, overcoming these obstacles is not only possible but can significantly enhance the effectiveness of your email marketing campaigns.
Command/Property Description
VML (Vector Markup Language) Used to specify graphical elements in XML. Essential for Outlook background compatibility.
CSS Background Properties Standard CSS properties to define the background of HTML elements. Includes color, image, position, and repeat settings.
Conditional Comments Used to target HTML/CSS code specifically to Outlook email clients.

In-depth Analysis of Outlook's Background Color Dilemma

Email marketers and web designers often face significant challenges when creating HTML email templates that are compatible across different email clients. Outlook, in particular, has been a source of frustration due to its unique rendering engine. Unlike most email clients that use web-based rendering engines, Outlook uses the Word rendering engine, which can lead to discrepancies in how HTML and CSS are interpreted, especially concerning background colors and images. This difference means that techniques that work flawlessly in web browsers and other email clients may not work in Outlook, leading to emails that look different than intended. This inconsistency can undermine the effectiveness of email campaigns, as the visual aspect of an email plays a crucial role in engaging recipients and conveying the message.
To address these issues, developers have come up with various workarounds and best practices. One such solution involves using Vector Markup Language (VML) for defining background properties in emails intended for Outlook. VML is a Microsoft-specific XML language that allows for the inclusion of vector graphic definitions directly in HTML emails. By leveraging VML, designers can ensure that their emails display consistently in Outlook, with the intended background colors and images appearing as expected. Additionally, conditional comments are used to target Outlook clients specifically, ensuring that these VML-based styles do not affect the email’s appearance in other clients. Understanding and implementing these techniques is essential for creating engaging and visually consistent emails across all platforms, helping businesses and marketers to maintain a professional image in their email communications.

Exploring Solutions for Outlook Email Background Issues

Creating HTML emails that render consistently across various email clients is crucial for maintaining the integrity of email marketing campaigns. The disparity in email client rendering, particularly with Microsoft Outlook, poses significant challenges for designers. Outlook's reliance on the Word rendering engine, as opposed to the web-standard engines used by other email clients, results in frequent discrepancies in how CSS and HTML are interpreted. This often leads to issues like background colors not displaying as expected, which can impact the visual appeal and effectiveness of an email. Addressing these issues requires a deep understanding of both the limitations and capabilities of Outlook's rendering engine, and the development of creative solutions that ensure emails look consistent and professional across all platforms.
Adopting specific strategies, such as utilizing Vector Markup Language (VML) for backgrounds and employing conditional comments to target Outlook, can significantly improve the consistency of email presentation. These techniques allow designers to bypass some of Outlook's rendering limitations, ensuring that emails maintain their intended design. Moreover, understanding these workarounds and best practices is essential for designers and marketers aiming to create effective, engaging email campaigns. As the email marketing landscape continues to evolve, staying informed about these challenges and solutions is crucial for anyone looking to leverage email as a powerful marketing tool.

Wrapping Up the Outlook Email Background Color Conundrum

Addressing the Outlook email background color issue is a testament to the intricate balance between design creativity and technical acumen in the realm of email marketing. This challenge underscores the critical need for adaptability and innovation within digital communication strategies. By understanding the unique rendering behaviors of Outlook and employing specialized techniques such as VML and conditional comments, designers can overcome these hurdles, ensuring their messages are conveyed with visual integrity across all platforms. Sound Like ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION Pt.2: Kensuke Kita (2024 version)

Introduction

Kensuke Kita performing live, 2017
^(\This article is an updated version of my "Sound Like" article from 2021. I have reposted this article due to difficulties editing the original version*, and have included additional information and recommendations based on the increased popularity of amp simulator pedals*)*
Hello fellow musicians and Ajikan fans!
I have been a fan of ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION for roughly 16 years and as a guitarist was greatly inspired by the band's alt rock sound.
After a few years of research I have written a series of "sound like" articles for ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION. The purpose of these articles is to provide context on how the band create their signature sound, and to support beginning musicians or tribute acts who may wish to replicate it.
At the end of each article I have drafted a Budget Rig, which you could use for both at home and in a live environment. I have also provided some general amp settings to tweak and try, which are based on the band's live sound and be can used to help replicate their tones.
This is a 3-part series and if you enjoy this article I would recommend checking out the other articles:
Sound Like ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION Pt.1: Masafumi Gotoh (2024 version) : AsianKungFuGeneration (reddit.com)
ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION Sound Like Part 3: Yamada : AsianKungFuGeneration (reddit.com)
To help you recognise the individual guitar tones, Gotch's guitar parts are normally panned to the left earphone and Kita's are panned to the right earphone on the band's albums. (On 2016's Sol-Fa, Hometown and some of the Planet Folks singles the panning was swapped, with Gotch instead in the right ear and Kita on the left)

Kensuke Kita

Kita during the Hometown UK/FR tour 2019
In this article we are focusing on lead guitarist and backing vocalist Kensuke Kita. Responsible for many of the band's iconic melodies and riffs, Kita's rig setup is a classic rock setup: A Gibson Les Paul into a Marshall-esque amp.
Inspired by 90's alt rock and Brit Pop groups such as Supergrass, Blur, Manic Street Preachers and Radiohead, Kita has constantly evolved as a musician and became more involved with the song writing process from Fanclub onwards. (Kita has writing credits on Blue Train)
This evolution can be seen clearly when you compare the punk rock style of Houkai Amplifier with the more experimental, pop inspired Planet Folks. While the earlier records reflected a focus on riffs and octave chord melodies, Kita now prefers playing major and minor third chords, triad chords and arpeggios, reflecting his "melody-maker" role in the band.
A triad chord is a chord made of 3 separate notes. They are commonly played on the higher strings and Kita uses them a lot, in tracks such as Aru Machi no Gunjou, Sayonara Lost Generation and Gekkou. Major and Minor third chords are sometimes referred to as Dyads.
During live performances Kita will experiment with ambient tones, but remains the lead guitar sound, with Gotch acting as a anchor for the overall band.

GUITARS

Kita's primary guitar is a Gibson Les Paul. You want to capture the power and sustain of the humbucker pickups, so single coils will generally not work. Furthermore, I would not recommend active pickups, such as EMG pickups, and to avoid anything that creates too much gain. Remember, Kita sound is rooted in a traditional rock setup.
His most recognisable and iconic guitar is his Historic Collection 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue. Kita bought the 59's reissue in 2004 and has been a mainstay ever since, using it on every Ajikan album from Fanclub onwards.
Kita's Historic Collection 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue
Kita's backup guitar is a Historic Collection 1958 Les Paul Standard Reissue, which is also used for Eb/D# standard tuning for songs such as After Dark, Yoru No Call and Empathy. Kita's other standout guitar is his Gibson ES-335, which is used occasionally for songs with a capo.
A good example of this would be the live performance of Natsu no Hi, Zanzou from the 10th Anniversary shows and live performances of Juuni Shinhou no Yuukei and Maigo Inu to Ame no Beat.
Kita has also experimented with Fender Telecasters, Jazzmasters and Stratocasters on the band's albums, although neither have been seen on stage so far. In a interview with Guitar Magazine, Kita confirmed that he used a Fender Jazzmaster on Empathy.
Kita with his Gibson ES-335, during the Quarter Century Tour
If you are looking to capture Kita's guitar sound, a Les Paul style guitar with vintage sounding pickups would be the best place to start.
Between 2002-2007, Kita armed his Les Pauls with Gibson Burstbucker 2 in the bridge position and the Burstbucker 1 in the neck position. Since 2007, Kita has used Custombuckers in both positions. Like Gotch, Kita uses Tortex Flex picks and are most likely .73mm or .88mm variants

AMPLIFIERS

In the band's early years of success, Kita used a Marshall JCM 900-4100 head with a Marshall 1960A cabinet. In late 2005, Kita replaced the Marshall amp with the Bogner Ecstasy 101b and Bogner 4x12 Cabinet, which he has used ever since as his main live amplifier.
Kita's JCM900 amp, used during the early 2000's and Sol-Fa 2004 tour
The Bogner has 3 channel settings, with the "green" channel based on traditional Vox amp, the "blue" channel based on a Marshall JCM800 & Marshall Plexi and the "Red" channel as a higher drive channel. The Bogner also has a boost feature that Kita uses for solos.
Both the JCM900 and Ecstasy amps are based on vintage Marshall sounds, whereas the modern Marshall amps have a darker, more compressed sound.
Between 2000-2011 Kita would only use the Marshall or Bogner stack for live performances and simply switch between the amp channels. In 2012, Kita introduced the Shinos Luck 6V combo to his live setup.
The Shinos amps were set up by a former VOX Chief engineer and in general has a blend of Fender and Vox amps sound wise. They have also been compared to Matchless amps, which Kita has used occasionally on international tours.
Kita's Bogner Ecstasy 101b and Shinos Luck V6
Kita has experimented with more amplifiers in the studio and has been known to use JCM800's, VOX and Matchless amps on albums, but for the purpose of this article we will keep the focus on matching his vintage Marshall & Bogner tone.
Kita's clean sound can be heard on Angou No Waltz, Mustang and Yuugure no Aka, while his distorted sound can be heard on Standard, Re:Re: and Kouya wo Aruke.
Kita used 4x12 Greenback speakers in his Marshall cabinet (this was 2004 sound & since 2005 he has likely use Celestion Vintage 30 speakers. The Shino is likely set up with a Celestion Classic Lead 80 speaker.)

PEDALS

Alongside the amp pairing, Kita uses a wide variety of pedals that has only grown in recent years. Previously, Kita stuck to a small collection of pedals which included a delay pedal and a preamp pedal.
Kita's 2004 pedalboard, used during the Sol-Fa tour
This collection has since rapidly grown, but has generally included a compressor, phaser, wah and a delay.
During the Eizo Sakushin Shu Vol. 6 performance, where he used a Boss DD-20 Giga Delay, an MXR M-132 Super Comp, Boss PH-2 Super Phaser, a Guyatone WR3 Wah Rocker and VoxV847 Wah pedal. Kita also used a BOSS TR-2 Tremolo at this time.
Kita's 2009 Pedalboard, which was used during the Eizo Sakushin Shu Vol. 6 performance
The Super Comp is used as a boost for lead melodies and solos, and the Super Phaser can be heard in performances of Mustang and Shinkokyuu. The Giga Delay can be heard in tracks such as Night Diving, Re:Re: and Mugen Glider, as well as the band's ambient jams. The Wah Rocker can be heard in Kugenuma Surf & Enoshima Escar
Since 2010 Kita's pedal board has gradually evolved to include more delay & modulation effects. (Such as the Boss Harmonist and BOSS MD-200 Modulation) He has also used fuzz and distortion pedals from time to time. For example, he has added the BOSS Tone Bender and Earthquaker Transmisser for ambient noises between tracks.
In recent years, Kita has also used octave pedals for lead parts (which recreates what the guitarist plays but at a higher or lower pitch), such as Blood Circulator, Boys & Girls and Clock Work. The Electro Harmonix POG2, which can be seen on his current rig below, is used for the intro of Kakato de Ai o Uchinarase.
Kita's current 2022 Pedalboard: (1) FREE THE TONE/JB-41S (Junction Box) (2) Jim Dunlop/535Q Crybaby Multi-Wah (Wow Pedal) (3) Custom Audio Japan/RS 616 (Programmable Switcher) (4)MXSuper Comp (Compressor) (5) Electro-Harmonix/POG2 (Octave) (6) BOSS/TB-2W (Fuzz) (7)EarthQuaker Devices/Transmisser (Modulation/Reverb) (8) strymon/ZELZAH (multi-phaser) (9) BOSS/MD-200 (multi-modulation) (10)(11) BOSS/DD-20 (multi-delay) (12) BOSS/FRV-1 (reverb) (13) Electro-Harmonix/FREEZE (sustainer)(14) BOSS/FS-5U (foot switch) (15) BOSS/TU-2s (tuner) (16) RJM/Amp Gizmo (amplifier channel switcher) (17) FIREGLOW/PPS-05 (power supply) (18) Vital Audio/VA-08 Mk-II (Power Supply)
To help manage his massive pedalboard on stage, Kita has been using a Custom Audio Switcher to control his pedals, which also allows him to create "loops" of saved settings for each song. I've included a list of his pedals from the current board on the picture below.
The guitar runs into the Junction box (top right) and wah pedal before going into the switcher. Kita can control the Comp and reverb from the switcher, along with the amp settings.
The guitar line then runs from the Dyna Comp through the rest of the pedals, which are controlled in separate loops by the switcher, before running into an amp switcher for the Bogner and Shinos. You can see these loops below:
Loop 1: Dyna Comp Loop 2: Dyna Comp, POG 2, Tone Bender, Transmisser Loop 3: Dyna Comp, Zelzah Loop 4: Dyna Comp, BOSS MD-200 (using the tremolo effect) Loop 5: Dyna Comp, 2x BOSS DD-20s Loop 6: Dyna Comp, 63' Fender Reverb
Kita has a few additional pedals on the board, such as the Electro Harmonix Freeze, which can hold a note for a sustained amount of time and a separate BOSS footswitch to tap in a count for his delay sound.
While this may seem complicated (and it is!) bear in mind that many of the pedals are to recreate certain sounds from the band's 10 albums, or to allow Kita to experiment during live performances.
You do not need to build a pedalboard this big to sound like Kita.
Instead, I would focus on Kita's main pedals, which include the MXR Super Comp, his two Boss DD-20 Giga Delay pedals, the Dunlop535Q Crybaby Multi-Wah, the Strymon ZELZAH (phase) and BOSS MD-200. (phase/auto-wah/tremolo)

Sound Like Kita ...On a Budget

Kita, Quarter Century tour, 2022
To buy Kita's current rig would cost thousands of pounds (the 59' Les Paul alone could be worth £5,000) so much like the Gotch's post we have a few more affordable options that could get you close. The idea is to create a rig that can be used at home or in small venues to perform live.
Also bear in mind that information provided are based on Kita's Live setup, which is aimed at finding a medium between all of the sounds formed on the albums. Please also note that these are personal suggestions as a fan and if you find that works better for you, then great!
The main areas to consider are:
  • A 50's inspired Les Paul
  • A Boutique Marshall style amp
  • A compressor pedal
  • A Delay pedal and Multi-effect pedals
GUITAR
In terms of guitar options there are plenty of Les Paul copies, but for look and sound Epiphone is a no-brainer. The Epiphone 1959 Les Paul Standard is the newer, more expensive option but is based on the 59' Les Paul model, much like Kita's main guitar. You can buy one for around £749.
Epiphone 1959 Les Paul Standard
The more affordable option is the Epiphone Les Paul Standard '50s, which is also a solid pick and goes for around £500.
AMPLIFIER
In terms of affordable amps, Bogner have recently released the Ecstasy Mini 30W Head which costs around £349. You would need a speaker to plug the head into, this solid-state amp would get you close to Kita's sound and could be used for gigging with a big enough speaker.
Bogner Ecstasy Mini 30W Head
You could also try out the Marshall MG50 and Marshall Origin amps as affordable Marshall amps with a classic sound, closer to the JCM900/Bogner style.
Another approach you could take would be to use the Bogner Ecstasy pedals, which are pedals designed to emulate the Bogner Ecstasy amps. (Please bear in mind that you would need to tweak the settings more to work with the amp you use)
The BOSS Katana series and Blackstar amps (which have a dial to set a more British sound) have Marshall-esque settings and could also work, but would require more tweaking.
PEDALS
There are a wide variety of pedals to choose from, but to keep the pedal suggestions simple but versatile. Because of its importance to Kita's sound, I would recommend the MXR Super Comp.
MXR Super Comp
A great example of how this would sound can be on tako wasa YouTube channel, who demonstrated the pedal on this live stream. (tako also has a solid pedal board that is worth taking inspiration from!) An alternative approach would be to buy a Booster pedal to create the same effect, such as the Xotic EP-3 Boost
A delay pedal is also must for a sound like rig (Especially those keen to play the Re:Re: 2016 intro) and so the recommendation would be a Boss DD Delay pedals. The DD-6 or DD-8 are more affordable options that can definitely do the job, while the DD-200 gives you a more versatile option and the ability to save pre-sets for different tracks.
Boss DD-8
Cheaper alternatives that you could also consider are the Tone City Tape Machine and the TC Electronic Flashback 2 Mini, which are both good options for the price.
Another pedal for Kita's sound to consider would be a Wah pedal. As the Dunlop535Q Crybaby is quite a steep price for casual players, so I would recommend the Vox 845 Wah Wah Pedal. At £69 its considerably cheaper than the Dunlop535Q and should get close to Kita's original Wah sound.
Finally, we are going to focus on the modulation sounds for Kita, and ultimately this is down to preference and what songs you would like to emulate.
BOSS MD-200
If you wanted to have a mix of sounds, the BOSS MD-200, which Kita uses, covers many of the sounds he uses, including the phaser, auto-Wah and tremolo sounds.
For more specific roles, the BOSS PH-3 Phase Shifter will get you close to his original phase sound (try to avoid the Phase 90 style pedals for Kita's sound), while the BOSS Harmonist or a different Octave pedal would help capture some of his lead tones for the current era.
You could also consider a reverb pedal if you want to capture some of the ambient sounds Kita creates live or if the amp you choose doesn't include reverb.
AMP SIMULATOR PEDAL OPTIONS?
The final option to consider would be a Amp Simulator pedal. This type of pedal has become increasingly popular in the last few years and would be used in place of a traditional amp and effect pedals. You would then use the Amp Simulator with a IR Cabinet (a powered cabinet speaker) or with a Power Amp in between the Amp Simulator and a traditional cabinet.
They can be fairly expensive to buy and I would only advise buying one if you do intend to move on from your traditional amp/pedal setup, however the Quad Cortex DSP & Headrush Pedalboard would be good starting points. They are both aimed at capturing more traditionally hi gain amps such as the Bogner and Marshall amps, so should be able to do a good job at capturing Kita's sound.

Recommended Amp Settings

The following amp settings were based on photos from live performances and you should bear in mind that the volume may be quite loud for home use, so I would suggest bringing it down. Also bear in mind that every musician and amp will slightly differ so you may need to tweak with your settings to find the right blend.
My personal advice is to keep the gain around the middle and to use the volume to crunch up the sound. Kita does use a cabinet, so you may need to add more low end for a combo amp, and again bear in mind that the volume may need to be lower for home use.
Shino Luck V6:
Vol: 5, Treble: 5, Middle: 5, Bass: 3.5, Master: 3.5, Boost: 7, Level: 4
Bogner Green Setting:
Presence A: 8.5, Presence B: 8, Vol. 1: 5, Treble: 4:5, Mid: 4, Gain 1: 5.5
Bogner Blue Setting:
Vol. 2: 5.5, Vol. 3: 5.5, Treble: 5, Middle: 5/5.5, Bass: 5, Gain 2: 4.5, Gain 3: 5.5

2024.05.14 19:11 Drull17 Tip: If you are looking for Simon's hoodie with zipper, stop. Buy the official one.

Tip: If you are looking for Simon's hoodie with zipper, stop. Buy the official one.
It is a piece of advice I want to give after unfortunately, being scammed. I don't want to go into details because I don't think y'all are interested, just that because the page where TeamPsyskallar sell the official hoodie they don't ship to my country, I had to look to buy it somewhere else and while I was at it, get one with a zipper (like the canon). It wasn't worth it LOL.
DO NOT BUY from any other site (RedBubble is where I bought it from), as I did my research and it turns out that the official hoodie is the highest quality hoodie out there (as far as the Simon Hoodie goes).
The quality of the hoodie is good (decent at least, nothing premium), its size is precise and perfect for cosplay because of its big hood, the size of the logo is perfect, its print is “water-based”, much better than the plastisol print they sell out there. The difference is that “water-based” is basically painted on the hoodie, while the plastisol is “glued on”, the plastisol will eventually peel off or crack. While the other will last much longer, the plastisol is for brightly colored logos, so there is no benefit to using it with Simon's hoodie logo (since it is only black). Here some examples:
AliExpress hoodie:
Taken from AliExpress reviews
Official one:
Credits to: Material-Beach-3295
Be confident with the official hoodie, it's not worth the risk of getting a bad printed and small logo, wrong hoodie size, poorer quality and even more expensive and all because it just does not have the zipper.
ALTERNATIVES:
In case your country is not listed in the TeamPsyskallar store (as it happened to me), the alternative you have left is to buy the one from AliExpress, I recommend buying 1 or 2 sizes bigger than yours, as in the reviews they complain that the hood is too small, but the quality is not so bad.
In my case, I just contacted a friend in a neighboring country and he told me to buy the official one and send it to him, then he will send it to me. So it didn't all end so badly I guess
I hope this helps, mostly to prevent others from buying horrible quality hoodies lmao

2024.05.14 19:10 Douglasjm Magic is Programming B2 Chapter 1: Catching Up

Synopsis:
Carlos was an ordinary software engineer on Earth, up until he died and found himself in a fantasy world of dungeons, magic, and adventure. This new world offers many fascinating possibilities, but it's unfortunate that the skills he spent much of his life developing will be useless because they don't have computers.
Wait, why does this spell incantation read like a computer program's source code? Magic is programming?
___
Here we go with book 2!
<< First < Previous Next > (RR) or Next > (Patreon)
Carlos lounged comfortably on one of the mayor's fancy sofas. At 23 years old with a healthy body he really didn't need cushioned upholstery, but he liked how it felt. Honestly, he was probably more comfortable with high quality furniture than someone of his relatively low-income background should be in this world. Spoiled by the mass production factories of modern Earth, I suppose. All of this stuff here is probably handmade. Er, make that definitely handmade. Unless they have magic factories I haven't heard about, or something. He mentally shrugged. There was no point trying to change his attitudes toward furniture now. While this world might have higher prices for a lot of things than he was used to, he was also a lot richer than he was used to thanks to having become a noble lord. People would expect him to treat fine furniture as cheap because of his station.
I might have the physical habits of a couch potato, but at least I don't look like one. Too skinny. Not as skinny as Amber, though. He smiled as he watched the young woman next to him on the sofa continue animatedly expounding on their recent adventures together. She was lanky, with few curves to speak of and spindly limbs, far from any conventional picture of feminine beauty. Her hair, a slightly lighter shade of brown than his own, was cropped short. He thought she was 18 or 19 years old, but wasn't sure. Have I really never asked her age before? ... Would that be a rude question here? Regardless of her age, she had grown her confidence a lot since their first meeting a few weeks ago. She'd found her footing in a new life that she'd seized with utter determination, and he saw no sign of the shyness that she'd first greeted him with. The way her potential was finally blooming was beautiful to watch.
Carlos turned his gaze to the sofa across from them and carefully held back from laughing at the expressions Trinlen was making as Amber wrapped up explaining the events and developments they'd gone through since their introduction to him at the Royal Mage Academy. Carlos had contributed a fair amount to the explanation at first, but Amber had taken to it with enthusiasm when she arrived, and he could tell she was enjoying it. The young man in front of them, newly graduated from said academy, was on the edge of his seat and leaning forward, hanging attentively on every word. His casual attire, plain and made of cheap materials, looked thoroughly out of place on the finely embroidered velvet of the sofa, but he'd shown no sign of even noticing the finery around him. Excitement warred for control of his face with surprise, disbelief, envy, and dismay.
Amber finished her impromptu monologue, and Trinlen slowly schooled his face into a neutral expression. His voice was tense and tightly controlled. "So... In short, you're telling me that in the mere two weeks since you met me, you discovered a mana-poaching conspiracy of nobles, were abducted right under the noses of two royal guards without them even noticing, absorbed mana so fast that you gained 6 levels in a day and a half - so unfair, by the way - somehow learned an obscure portal spell from just its name and description, found evidence of a conspiracy against the Crown, and personally met a princess." He paused, then threw his hands up as he wailed in frustration and disappointment. "And I missed it!?"
Carlos threw back his head and burst out laughing. He couldn't help it. Trinlen just sounded so much like a little kid who'd barely missed out on a candy store giving away its entire stock for free. It was such an incredible light-hearted contrast with how everyone else viewed these same events that the sheer ridiculousness of it was overwhelming. Amber joined the laughter a moment later, shaking her head in amused disbelief, and after a few more seconds Trinlen started chuckling too.
Carlos's laughter eventually trailed off, and he took a deep breath to settle down. "Thanks, Trinlen. It's been a very stressful two weeks, and laughing like that helped release a lot of it. Feels good. Anyway, what have you been up to? I thought you would take a whole month to graduate?"
"Technically I only said 'next month', not that it would be at the same point in the month. But yes, this is earlier than I expected. The normal graduation ceremony is still a week and a half away." Trinlen shrugged. "They didn't explain the reasons, but after what you said I'm guessing your meeting with the princess prompted her to do something. The vice headmaster called me to his office yesterday morning, a few teachers grilled me on my classwork, and they declared I'd passed my exams. Then they told me to pack because I'd be teleported to my new employers the next day, and here I am." He sighed. "Hmph. Now I won't get to humiliate Norla in front of the whole academy when she gives her speech." Then he perked up and grinned widely. "But it sounds like you two are going to be so much fun that I'll get over it in no time!"
"I'm not sure if I agree with your idea of fun, Trinlen, but if it motivates you to help us more then that's good enough for me." Carlos chuckled again. "Anyway, do you need some time to get settled in? You might need to think about lesson plans for us too. We don't need just catalogues of incantations to learn anymore, at least not for simple ones, but I believe you learned other things in the academy too. You mentioned creating your own spells, as I recall."
Trinlen nodded. "I did mention that, yes. I'm guessing your lack of need for a catalogue is because of your newfound ability to somehow pull entire incantations from thin air? You'll have to at least tell me about the limitations of that so I'll know what I still need to teach you, but yeah, there are other things. For one thing, there's your sloppy terminology! Why does no one outside of the academy care about properly distinguishing between the states of mana? Is it really that hard to understand that calling aether, mana, and essence all by the same term obscures your meaning and often causes confusion? Or are people so stupid that they can't even understand the difference?"
Carlos blinked and exchanged a look with Amber. His comprehension aid informed him about the distinction the instant Trinlen spoke the terms. That would have been nice to know earlier. The comprehension aid is a house secret, so we should let him explain. "At least for us, it's just ignorance. I don't think I've even heard the other two terms you mentioned, and certainly no one ever explained them. So, what is the difference?"
Trinlen paused, cocked his head for a moment, and slowly deflated after his impassioned rant. "Yeah, okay, that's fair. I don't think I ever heard about it before going to the academy either." He sat up straight. "Aether is what you've been calling ambient mana. It's thin like air, and it's everywhere. Its only use is converting it to mana or essence. Mana, using the term with proper precision, is thicker but still fluid like water. It exists primarily in people or creatures and is used as fuel to supply power for spells and magical effects. Essence is hard and solid. It is the material that soul structures are made of, as well as the forms of active spells and enchantments. Am I clear so far?"
Amber answered first. "Yes, I'm familiar with each of the forms you described. I have questions about more details - so many questions - but you should get properly settled in, and maybe eat lunch, before we really get down to it. Have you spoken with Mayor Stelras yet? Do you have lodging sorted out?"
"I went by his office first. He's having someone take my luggage to an inn. The Adventurer's Haven, I think? He said something about a 'low-value target' and having an empty suite already booked." Trinlen's eyes widened. "Waaait a minute. Is he putting me in the room you two were abducted from?"
Carlos shrugged. "Sounds like it."
"Nice! Think there'll be any evidence left of how it was done?"
"Haha! Probably not by this point, but you're welcome to look. Now go get unpacked, eat a meal, and start planning your lessons for us. I'm glad you're here, but we have some other things to do too."
Trinlen nodded and stood up. "Sure. I'll be back before you miss me."
Carlos waved as Trinlen sauntered out the door. He and Amber sat in companionable silence for a while as he felt the mana - or essence? - of Trinlen's soul moving off into the distance. "Well. That was interesting. It's good to have him, but I was expecting a bit more time to think and plan before he'd get here."
"Yeah." Amber stretched and then leaned back into the sofa's cushions, luxuriating in their soft firmness. "So, how much are we going to tell him? How useful will his knowledge even be for us, now that we have, what did you call it, the reference documentation? That bit about the states of mana is good to know, but is it really relevant and important, and how much more can there be that's not in the documentation?"
"Be careful talking about that out loud, remember?" Carlos relaxed and draped his arms across the sofa's back as he focused his mind on their mental bond through Purple, their friendly dungeon core. [On Earth, we made many languages similar to the language of incantations, and we had the reference documentation for all of them. We even published that documentation free for everyone to have. Teachers for those languages were still useful, and even critically important for many people. Having access to knowledge doesn't mean you automatically understand how to properly apply it. There may be related knowledge we have no idea even exists. There could be techniques and patterns for how to use the language that are simply outside the scope of the documentation. Perhaps most importantly, a teacher can use their experience to notice a student's mistakes and correct them before they become problems.]
[Hmm.] Amber bit her lip, thinking. [Like how I knew about making soul structures and synergies between them, but had no idea about the importance of being able to examine and fix them, I suppose.]
Carlos nodded. [Yeah. And that's a really simple example. I know some that are a lot more complex, though I'm not sure how many of them are even applicable for incantations. Inversion of control, dependency injection, factory patterns...] He shook his head. [Just the context knowledge needed to be able to fully understand those could take days or weeks to teach well enough for you to use them. I could maybe explain the basic ideas faster with some simplified analogies, but that would lose so many details that I doubt it would still be useful.]
Amber paused. [... Even my comprehension aid is baffled by the terms you just said. It translated the individual words that you said, but all I got for the phrases is a confusing jumble.] She chuckled. [Anyway, I concede the point. Trinlen will still be able to teach us important and useful things. We still need to decide what secrets to share with him.]
[A lot depends on how good he is at keeping secrets. We don't actually know him all that well yet. He's certainly fun, and he seems clever, but for assessing his integrity we're leaning pretty hard on just a janitor vouching for him.] Carlos frowned in thought. [In order for him to do his job, he needs to know that we can only "pull an entire incantation from thin air" if it's a simple one. He does not need to know the full details of help, however, and most certainly does not need to learn to use it himself. That secret is a very sensitive one, where even just letting too much knowledge of it spread would lose us a major advantage.]
[Definitely. No casting help where he can hear it, and don't say anything about it that's not directly relevant for his teaching, either. Not until he's earned our full trust.] Amber lapsed into silent consideration. [We should introduce him to Purple. We'll kind of have to at some point anyway, and the really valuable thing there is Purple himself, not just the knowledge of his existence.]
Carlos nodded. [True. I think that probably is the least sensitive of our house secrets, and being able to call him through a bond with Purple would be useful.] He chuckled. [And maybe his cleverness will end up producing some good ideas for Purple to use. See if he can find a more productive outlet than pranks for his creativity. And then... If he keeps that secret well enough for long enough, we can consider trusting him with more secrets.]
Amber sent back wordless agreement.
Carlos started sitting up, lifting himself out of the comfortable cushions. "Well, we should get some food ourselves, too. And maybe introduce Trinlen to everyone else along with Purple." He stood up and spotted a letter he'd set aside when Trinlen arrived. "Oh yeah, and what do you think we should do about Kindar?"
"Wait, what's this about Kindar?"

2024.05.14 19:08 youthofoldage what do you all think of cleaned PCGS coins?

I saw a coin on ebay from a well-reviewed coin dealer, and the coin was PCGS slabbed with "PCGS MS UNC Detail - Cleaned" in the description. Looking at the coin, it looks really nice, although I am no grading expert, it seems to my untrained eye that all the right things are there. The asking price of the coin is about the same as XF-55 in the PCGS price guide, and an MS60 example would be higher.
On the one hand, the collector part of me says "If you like looking at it, buy it." But the paranoid newbie part of me says "Great, but you'll never be able to sell it!"
What do you all think? Is that price too high for a cleaned coin?

2024.05.14 19:04 StrangeSupermarket71 Deisik's opinion on Mortdog adressing 14.10 update. Thoughts?

" I want to share my opinion on this. I will be glad to clarify something if it is not clear.
I want to talk to you about balance in the 11th set. And use the future patch as an example, in particular Mortdog's explanation of what and how.
I think all the patches in set 11 were bad and could have been better. Each patch lags behind the current meta and even in the next patch it will not catch up with it. There are a number of reasons for this that are definitely worth taking into account. Such as: human factor; they need to close the patch 8 days before it appears on live servers; But I think the most important thing is that there is not enough attention to balance on live servers. Let's talk about each one separately.
  1. Human factor. In such work there are always mistakes and failures, it is impossible without them. But I also can't say that the balance in TFT is bad and I want to stop playing this game. And so I think this can be attributed to the fact that set 10 was given WAY more attention from the balance side, which in turn makes the problems of set 11 much more obvious and this upsets the players.
Let's step back a little and talk philosophically. TFT players have become much better at playing at all levels, as well as taking a more detailed approach to studying the meta/broken stuff, which in turn makes problematic patches even more problematic and less interesting to play. It's also worth considering that from set 11 we have tournaments that take place during the same time all over the world. And releasing patches like the next one (14.10) doesn't look right. When, in turn, the previous patch (14.09) was a filler and it was possible to experiment much more with it, but we received a placebo patch with 0 balance changes. Let's go back.
  1. The need to close the patch in 8 days. This is something we cannot change and it is worth accepting. Perhaps this will change in the future, but now this is what they have to work with, which in turn creates a lot of problems, but the advantages should not be forgotten. We have a stable patch cycle every 2 weeks, which is much more frequent than other games.
  2. Balance on live servers. This is what I have always considered the main problem in TFT for its entire existence and this has ALWAYS been a problem. The TFT team is working on future projects sacrificing the quality of live patches. But let's not forget about the previous point, one problem follows from another. This is natural. But I'm also sure that the quality of the live balance could be much better. You don't even have to go far, an example is set 10. Let's not have any illusions about this. Set 10 received much more attention from the start, which led to better balance throughout the set. And the current set is for tests. We have a lot of systemic changes, changes in the competitive scene.
I could go on, but I think you understand what I want to say, otherwise I'll end up like a bebe.
TLDR I believe the TFT team needs to change its approach to balance and adapt to new realities. I can highlight 2 main points:
  1. TFT players have become better, which in turn gives a new challenge to the balance team.
  2. A new competitive format that allows room for experimentation between tournaments, but also requires more attention to tournament patches."

2024.05.14 19:01 Kris_P_Bac0n_ Book It: Dept Auto-Population Removal

While using “Book It” to schedule—Is it possible to stop the department from auto-populating to the users log-in department? I’ve been told that would be an all or nothing option which wouldn’t work for the org at large but I’m wondering if it’s possible to only do this while under a certain log-in dept. Currently, our schedulers are not remembering to remove this auto-population and replace it with the correct department for which they are scheduling and it can cause several scheduling issues.
For example: If I’m logged into “ClinicABC” the auto-population of the department field would not happen and instead be replaced with a hard stop. However if I’m logged into “SchedulerABC” department the dept field would continue to auto-populate.

***Prices are subject to change.

How to Pick the Right Air Purifier. Things to consider

Consider the Pollutants You Want to Target:

  • Allergens: Look for a purifier with a True HEPA filter, which captures particles as small as 0.3 microns, including dust, pollen, and pet dander.
  • Smoke and odors: Opt for a purifier with an activated carbon filter, which tackles smoke, cooking smells, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
  • Bacteria and viruses: Some purifiers use UV light or plasma ionization to kill airborne pathogens. However, their effectiveness and safety for long-term use are debated. Consider these features supplemental, not a replacement for true HEPA filtration.
Choose the Right Size for Your Space:

  • Air purifier capacity is measured in Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR). Higher CADR indicates faster air cleaning in a larger room.
  • The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) certifies CADR for smoke, dust, and pollen. Look for a CADR rating that covers your room size for the target pollutants.
  • A general rule: Choose a CADR at least 2/3 the square footage of the room. For example, a 300 CADR purifier is suitable for a 150 sq. ft. room.
Think About Noise Level and Energy Efficiency:

  • Air purifiers run continuously, so noise level is important. Look for models with decibel (dB) ratings that suit your preferences. Lower dB indicates quieter operation.
  • Energy Star certified purifiers use less energy, saving you money on electricity bills.
Additional Features to Consider:

  • Replacement filter costs: Factor in the cost and frequency of filter replacements. True HEPA filters typically need replacing every 6-12 months.
  • Smart features: Some purifiers offer Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing control through apps for scheduling, filter monitoring, and air quality checks.
  • Auto mode: This feature automatically adjusts fan speed based on air quality sensor readings.

What are the Benefits of Using Air Purifiers

Breathing clean air is essential for maintaining good health, and air purifiers offer a powerful tool to improve the quality of the air you breathe indoors. Here are some key benefits you can experience by using an air purifier:

  • Improved Respiratory Health: Air purifiers significantly reduce airborne pollutants like dust, pollen, pet dander, and smoke. This can be especially beneficial for people suffering from allergies, asthma, or other respiratory issues. By removing these irritants, air purifiers can ease congestion, coughing, and difficulty breathing, allowing you to breathe easier and experience improved overall respiratory health.
  • Reduced Allergens and Dust: If you struggle with seasonal allergies or dust sensitivity, air purifiers can be a game-changer. HEPA filters effectively capture allergens as small as 0.3 microns, including pollen, dust mites, and pet dander. This can significantly reduce allergy symptoms like itchy eyes, runny nose, and sneezing, leading to a more comfortable and allergy-free living environment.
  • Relief from Pet Dander and Smoke: Pet dander is a common allergen for many people, and air purifiers with HEPA filters can effectively remove it from the air. This can alleviate allergy symptoms triggered by pets and improve overall indoor air quality for pet owners and non-pet owners alike. Additionally, air purifiers with activated carbon filters can help reduce smoke particles and odors, providing relief for those living in areas with wildfires or those exposed to secondhand smoke.
  • Improved Sleep Quality: Clean air plays a vital role in getting a good night's sleep. Allergens and pollutants can disrupt sleep patterns by causing congestion, coughing, and difficulty breathing. Air purifiers can help by removing these irritants, creating a cleaner and more comfortable sleeping environment. This can lead to deeper, more restful sleep, leaving you feeling more energized and refreshed in the morning.
  • Reduced Risk of Airborne Illnesses: While air purifiers cannot eliminate viruses and bacteria entirely, some models with additional features like UV light or plasma ionization may help reduce their spread. Combined with other measures like proper ventilation and hygiene, air purifiers can contribute to a healthier indoor environment by potentially reducing the risk of airborne illnesses.

2024.05.14 18:58 lookary Help me find this thriller/horror movie about a man on fire

Hi, I'm quite desperate so I'm posting this here :)
Some months ago I posted this https://www.reddit.com/tipofmytongue/comments/152x1b1/tomtmovie2000s_whats_the_name_of_this_movie/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button which is what I'd say a call for help on finding a movie. (adding the link might help to see the comments and so what movie it is not, and more details about the story).
To be short and resume what I said, when I was a child I used to watch a movie over and over again about an ancient miner who's supposed to be left dying in an escalator, but escape and try to get revenge, ending up being set on fire. My sister was the owner of the movie disk/cassette and my mom does remember that movie too, but they don't know much more about it than me. My sister thinks the name was linked to fire, that's quite it. Sadly we've dumped the TV we were watching the movie on, and after a fire in my house, we moved all our stuff to a place I've never been, so I don't even know if we do still have this movie somewhere.
I've been searching this movie for years, I've gone to my family, to my friends, to AI and even to reddit but nothing, no one seems to know what I'm talking about, and it's a real mystery.

2024.05.14 18:54 External_Courage_216 Career advice

Hi i’m 19 and currently helping my parents manage their restaurant full time and i graduated from high school 2 years ago. Ive been looking into starting my own side business either to do in my garage or something mobile, but have no idea what to do. I have 10k in capital i can put up from savings and have no problem learning new skills/certifications. Im not looking for something to get rich quick just to make a bit of profit each week after work and my days off. Lawn-care isn’t the best option for me due to allergies and auto detailing is sort of saturated in my area but could be done. Im not the handiest in woodworking either. I dont want to do anything online or with online courses (unless they’re actual certifications), and before you say do what you love, working is what i like to do i just don’t know specifically what i like doing. Any advice or getting me pointed in the right direction is greatly appreciated.

2024.05.14 18:47 CMDR_WHITESNAKE Module was compiled with an incompatible version of Kotlin. The binary version of its metadata is 1.9.0, expected version is 1.6.0.

I'll preface this by saying that I'm both a Dart and Flutter noob, and I'm struggling with something that I can't wrap my head around and could use some advice.
I am making an app where there's a background task that executes every hour to pull data from an api and do something with it. Depending on what data comes back this may trigger a notification to be sent to the users device.
I have added workmanager: ^0.5.2 to my pubspec.yaml file and that all works fine - the hourly task will run, even in the background. Then I started looking into notifications, and found that I needed to use: flutter_local_notifications: 17.1.2. This however seems to require android SDK 34, so I followed this guide to ensure that it would compile to version 34 : https://pub.dev/packages/flutter_local_notifications/versions/17.1.2#-android-setup
but now I have a problem. When I build I get:
/my_app_name/build/workmanage.transforms/a25d58011f82ea922c69d6ef8d8765e2/transformed/out/jars/classes.jar!/META-INF/workmanager_release.kotlin_module: Module was compiled with an incompatible version of Kotlin. The binary version of its metadata is 1.8.0, expected version is 1.6.0
All the googling I do suggests that I just change the version of Kotlin to 1.6.0 and everything will be peachy, but if I do that I get this error:
BUILD FAILED in 12s Running Gradle task 'assembleRelease'... 12.8s ┌─ Flutter Fix ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐ │ [!] Your project requires a newer version of the Kotlin Gradle plugin. │ │ Find the latest version on https://kotlinlang.org/docs/releases.html#release-details, then update C:\Users\a_a_w\OneDrive\Desktop\flutterprojects\my_new_app\android\build.gradle: │ │ ext.kotlin_version = '' │ └───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘ Gradle task assembleRelease failed with exit code 1
I feel I'm missing something obvious here about how I'm supposed to set things up? Am I just trying to use two incompatible things here?

2024.05.14 18:45 External_Courage_216 Business advice and ideas?

2024.05.14 18:44 jlaracil Exploring the Benefits of Brainwallets

Hey everyone,
I’ve been diving deep into the world of brainwallets and wanted to share my thoughts and experiences with using them. For those unfamiliar, a brainwallet is a method of storing cryptocurrency keys in your memory by generating them from a passphrase. It’s a fascinating approach with some unique benefits.
I actually developed a tool called easySeed to simplify the process of creating and managing a brainwallet. It’s an open-source project that I designed to be straightforward and easy to use.
One of the main advantages of using a brainwallet is that you no longer need to store your 12 or 24-word seed phrase in a secure location. What better place than your own mind, which is always with you?
Here are a few reasons why I believe brainwallets can be a great option:
  1. Portability: Since your wallet exists in your mind, you don’t need to carry any physical devices or documents. This makes it highly portable and convenient.
  2. Security: Without any physical traces, there’s less risk of theft or loss due to hardware failure. As long as you keep your passphrase secure and private, your assets remain safe.
  3. Privacy: Brainwallets offer a high level of privacy, as there’s no digital footprint that can be easily tracked.
You can create a memorable passphrase based on a personal phrase that only you would know, combining it with details that are not obvious. For example:
Take a meaningful phrase: "My dog Bruno was born in 2010" Modify it to add complexity: "MyDogBrunoBrunoBornIn2010!" You can derivate other wallets from the same passPhrase by using the same passPhrase with a suffix. For example: PassPhrase: "MyDogBrunoBrunoBornIn2010!" Wallet 1: "MyDogBrunoBrunoBornIn2010!-wallet1" Wallet 2: "MyDogBrunoBrunoBornIn2010!-wallet2" ...
It’s also important to regularly practice recalling your passphrase to ensure you don’t forget it.
Has anyone else here experimented with brainwallets? I’d love to hear your experiences and any additional tips you might have.
Cheers!

2024.05.14 18:44 Tiny_Sheepherder3106 Counting NonBlank values in Columns by Date for Individual Row combinations

I’ve got a list of dates as column headers for the last 30 days. I’ve got a list of Names starting in row B. I’ve got a value of 1 occurring in various date columns for each row name.
I’m trying to create a table of rows with my names and columns of my names to create an intersection point that will count the number of times name combinations have a value of 1 on the same date.
I tried adding an image of source and expected out out but it got auto-removed. Sorry first time posting on Reddit!
Small Scale Example:
Columns start in B2 5/1/24 through 5/5/24
Rows starting in A2 are John Jane Jeff
Various cells in range B2:F4 have a “1”. Trying to output a table that lists John Jane and Jeff as columns and rows and to create a table that calculates a count of instances where they have a “1” on the same date. The actual date is irrelevant. I just want to know how often it happens.
