2024.05.14 04:10 bcm3152 Strange CS2 mouse behavior

Trying out Linux for gaming. So far every single player game I've tried works great. And Halo MCC has given me no grief with regards to weird issues. However my favorite FPS has been a bit of an annoyance to get working right. I think I've resolved the Graphics stuttery-ness that I was having with the launch options in this post(https://www.reddit.com/linux\_gaming/comments/wdjpq2/csgo\_launch\_options\_for\_amd\_hardware/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button)
However I am still having weird issues that I haven't seen documented else where. I would like to see if any of you have experienced similar issues, before going through the trouble of getting some input capture software so I can dig down into what the cause is.
There are two main issue's both regarding the mouse.
Seemingly at random I switch to Pistol, I am not using the scroll wheel on the mouse nor am I pressing 2 on the keyboard.
Also seemingly at random (AKA the worst time) I will fire, and nothing will happen, and I need to unpress the Lmb and repress it. Sometimes this lasts a few seconds, and I'll be furiously clicking away aiming at someone, or swing a corner and try to spray only to stand there with my dick in my hand, and just watch them own me. This is very frustrating (except when I have it happen and I still win the fight then, the handicap is just a ego boost) and I would like to find a resolution before I continue with my Premier grind.
I do have two monitors so I thought that that could've been the cause. But I do not see the cursor move to the other monitor, but maybe it is and is just invisible.
I do have the game on full screen, but even then when in menus It doesn't capture the mouse, and I can freely switch between monitors, which did not happen on windows.
Also mods I didn't read a single bit of your rules so feel free to remove this and tell me to go fuck myself if this type of post isn't allowed :)

Hi, can anyone help me get my server back up and running.

2024.05.13 23:54 GoGetSilverBalls OK I'm struggling with how to grade kids with trauma and LD

I have a student who lost their mother to violence over a year ago. They are also LD.
I have another student who lost their dad to a heart attack about 2 months ago.
The first student doesn't try, doesn't ask for help, doesn't even put on answer on a worksheet. When I approach and say, hey, how.can I help you get started, they just suck their thumb (6th grade) and mumble, no thanks.
The other student missed about 2 weeks, came back and made all the work up and had an A. First student has an F bc they have turned in literally nothing.
I am torn. I totally get where first student is traumatized. As was 2nd student because there are multiple issues (health) with their remaining parent, whose health is on the decline rapidly.
For me, 1st student should be able to grieve, but understand that doing zero work does not help them. I have tried, guidance counselor has tried, and on site therapist has tried. 1st student just refuses.
Should I let 1st student fail for refusing help? I personally feel like if I just pass them, they'll get into that mindset that they'll be "successful" with zero effort, and the world is going to be a horrible place for them when they go out into it. Can't read. Can barely write, and gives zero effort. All o can think is homelessness, abusive relationships bc of financial needs...I know you get what I'm trying to say, so I'll leave it at that.
To clarify, have contacted Dad with concerns and he assures me he can take 1st student to the library to finish assignments. Student 1 has come back on Monday with no finished work. Talked to dad, he said he took student 1 to the library and put them on the computer (where my work is posted), but said they just wouldn't do anything.
Do I fail student 1? I've followed all the IEP requirements and have gone out of my way to assist them.

2024.05.13 20:47 Hereforcomments64 LG55UK6300 - turns on but black screen and can't do anything

Hi Reddit, the TV is probably about 5 years old. Both the LG remote and the set top box remotes work to turn the tv on and off, it makes the LG sound, but the screen is blank (dark but can tell it's turned on) and then nothing works. I can't access anything. I unplugged everything several times and kept trying various things. I've held down the power button on the tv for up to 20 seconds after reading that may reboot it but doesn't seem to do anything. There are no other buttons on the tv besides the Power button. Since I can't access the menus not sure what else I can try, and doubt with the cost of a new one it's worth getting a repair company to come. Anyone have ideas to try? I am assuming it's the tv and not the set top box, otherwise I would at least get the tv menus? Not had any issues at all until now. Thanks for any input (pardon the pun).

Do any other A.B.A players have tips when facing vs Sin and Testament? I have a really hard time and am unsure what to do.
Sin seems to have really strong 50/50 in his base combo and it’s hard to read.
Vs Testament I can’t seem to get in to hit him because he can teleport away when I make any progress and he keeps zoning me out.
Also how does one use the yellow Roman Cancel. I can’t find it in the menus and it seems helpful.
Any and all help greatly appreciated just wanna get better as best grill.

2024.05.13 14:57 advanced_-_monkey Coping Cell Values from Worksheet A to Worksheet B – Formatting and Formula Errors

I have 2 worksheets in one workbook that are almost identical, but one has a few columns and tables hidden which in no way should be related to my issues. For context, the workbook is an insurance application, Sheet A to be filled by the applicant, Sheet B is where me and my team put in rates and other info we need to quote. So, I want all the values input on Sheet A to be duplicated in Sheet B with their corresponding cells.
Issue #1: I think I know why, but hoping there’s a work around .. The formula used to duplicate values from Sheet A to Sheet B do not translate with formulas in Sheet B. Ex.: Formula in cell on Sheet B to copy cell on Sheet A: ='Agent Filled SOV - Ex. Accts'!R5 & "" Formula on Sheet B using the value in the cell with the “copy” formula that now reads #VALUE and does not calc: =IF(R5,T5/R5,0)
Issue #2: Same scenario as Issue #1, but when I use the exact same “copy” formula in the 4 columns with Currency values listed, and the one column set as a Fraction, it freaks out! None of the Currency cells will read as currency, no matter what Number Format I choose for those cells/columns. Same goes with the decimal place for randomly some of the cells (even deep diving into the “More Number Formats …” section changes nothing), and only a few cells set as fractions actually are fractions and not decimals. The screens shots really explain this more.

Thoughts

We are a day late to the post this time. Sorry! I only just discovered at this point that I could keep running after I ran out of stamina, it's just slow. Once you let go of the sprint button, you stop and become exhausted. Just another weird difference between this game and future ones.
That Gypceros hunt I did in Breeding Season was the most frustrating hunt I have had yet. Gypceros can sometimes have a funny hitbox on its tail attack, and the small monsters were a really nasty combo combined with the trees in the area making my camera spazz out. Sometimes, you miss quality of life in this game, like World causing your camera to faze through walls. I think I would have been able to do that quest far more effortlessly if I was not so tired at the time. However, MH2 often demands so much of its player that when I am having a bad day, it can feel impossible. My brain gets caught in a loop making the same mistakes over and over again because I am struggling to focus. Usually, though, it's frankly not that difficult of a game (yet).

Discussion Prompt: Is pre-hunt prep important to Monster Hunter?

Something people often assume is that preparation in Monster Hunter games gets less intense the further along you get in the series. What I expected because of this, was that MH2 would have me spending more time preparing to hunt than compared to previous games. This did not turn out to be true, and I actually spent about the same amount of time preparing. If anything, the time I spend feels like less of a chore because I have to make impactful decisions about what I bring and why. The payout for preparing well is also very immediate. When you spend time gathering the materials for a full stack of mega potions, you can directly see them saving your skin, and ending a hunt overprepared is very satisfying (or disastrous if you were so overprepared that you forgot to have space to take items back).
Still, I had a bizarre realisation while playing - There are "quality of life" changes I would like to see for MH2, that were never used in future games in favour of what feels like enormous overcorrections. My main example would be having an item box in camp. As-is in 5th generation (maybe 6th will fix this, who knows), having your item box in camp absolutely destroys any sense of preparedness outside of having the correct equipment. What I would have loved to have instead, in retrospect, is being taken through each stage of preparation when you go out on the quest. The player would be taken through the menus for the item box, their equipment, asked what food they want, and so on. The player would be able to easily and quickly check which quest they accepted while doing this, and there would be scenes of their character preparing in the background (similar to when you are in the tent in Rise or World). I think this would have really made the player feel cool and professional at the same time as making sure they do not accidentally leave with the wrong items or equipment. If the player is already prepared, they could just as easily skip through all of that and go right to the hunt.
What do you think? Is pre-hunt preparation important to Monster Hunter in your opinion? Do the newer games sort of forget about it, or do they do it fine? What level of necessity in preparation is "Monster Hunter"?

As the title says really. I've just bought the game on PlayStation, heard lots of good things but I'm really confused about what I'm meant to be doing.
I've done the tutorial, and then I start on an island where everything is locked to my level. The menus are confusing too, there seems to be a lot to learn.
Is there a recommended YouTube channel to watch, or a blog to read about the aim of the game and what I'm meant to be doing?

I saved my progress like i normally do, then my pc decided to shut off randomly. So I turned it back on and my save file was gone.
SMAPI gave me the following error message:

2024.05.13 06:11 xtvtn Plugin Won't on my Skyrim AE 1.6.1170

I recently started modding Skyrim again and it was running smoothly until I was about done which something was causing my game to crash before it loaded. So, I had downloaded crash logger to try and help me figure out why. I am gonna be honest I have no idea how to read it but someone had said that I'm apparently missing a master and my plugins won't load. They had recommended downloading the TOML file thing as a patch for SSE engine fixes for the latest Steam version. Even after that none of my plugins would load and they had said I'll have to look through manually look through everything to find what I'm missing. I could really use some help cause I wouldn't have to go through and find what I'm missing and I don't know what else to do about why my plugins won't load. I'll upload my mod list and my crash log. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Disclaimer: This post is merely to provide knowledge, and not to instruct you to do anything. Your choice whether to choose the Science One program at UBC or not is completely up to you. I hope this helps in making an informed decision.
I just thought I would contribute to the existing public knowledge of the Science One program already on Reddit here: https://www.reddit.com/UBC/comments/ec95t4/for_anyone_interested_in_science_one/ My post assumes you already did basic research on the program and aims to contribute more knowledge that isn’t publicly available yet (here is the Science One website: https://scienceone.ubc.ca)
I am an alumni in the 2023-2024 cohort, but just a disclaimer that a few things will change in the program in the years to come (see below):
Just a few small updates to the previous Reddit post:
Note about grades: While Science One is promoted as a program where the students care more about knowledge than grades, while this is very true in my personal experience, I still think that grades played a large impact on our mental health, confidence, and our overall enjoyability of the first year experience. The reason I am including grades here is to allow you to have reasonable expectations about your grades and know that if you want to go into a very competitive specialization in second year, Science One may not be the right program for you. Note that the grades published on UBC grades (https://ubcgrades.com) is not representative of the actual class average. There is a policy where if a student failed two or more subjects in Science One, the credit for Science One will be broken down into its individual course components and the student will not appear to have been in Science One (it doesn’t show Science One on their transcript, rather the rough course equivalents). This raises the apparent class average reported. In my year, 3 people were removed, which changed the class average from 75% to 77%.
Alright, with that out of the way, I will be filling in the gaps of public knowledge specifically with the workload of Science One. Below is a (hopefully) unbiased perspective on Science One. My personal opinion will be stated later in this post.
Biology
Note: both of our biology professors (Pam Kalas and George Haughn) are no longer teaching in the program, so this subject may look very different
Overall: 3-10 hours of work per week depending on your thinking speed and how busy that week’s schedule is
Class average over the year: 71%
Term 1 Units: Great Bear Rainforest, Metabolism, DNA, Gene Expression, Genetics
Term 2 Units: Genetics (Continued); Phylogenies, Speciation, Population and Community Dynamics; Macromolecular Self Assembly; Regulation of Gene Expression; Biological Energy Transformation
Biology Tutorials
Chemistry
Note: One professor is no longer teaching in Science One (John Sherman), but the other is staying (Guillaume Bussiere), so this may be different in your year
Overall: 2-5 hours of work per week depending if there’s quizzes or assignments that week
Class average over the year: 75%
Term 1 Units: Chemical Bonding and Basics, Conformations, Stereochemistry, Thermodynamics, Electrochemistry
Term 2 Units: Kinetics, Quantum Chemistry, Intermolecular Forces (not really a whole unit, more like a supplementary lecture), Valence Bond Theory and Molecular Orbital Theory, Acid Base Chemistry, SN1 and SN2 Reactions

Summary
With that in mind, I want to provide some pros and cons of Science One:

Personal Opinion
While I did enjoy Science One at the start of the school year because of the pros mentioned above, over the school year, I started taking an interest in a competitive major, which put a lot of stress on myself to achieve high marks. It almost felt like no matter how hard I tried and how well I thought I knew the topic, my mark was going to be low anyways because the way the content is tested. I feel like I shot myself in the foot when it comes to getting into my major as the application process is completely based on grades.
While I don’t know if I would have done better in mainstream (I probably wouldn’t have had as many friends, and therefore my mental health would be worse, and possibly it means that I don’t have as much motivation), I definitely think that I could have done better in mainstream if I had the same motivation I do now as their way of testing and marking may be a lot more lenient. However, I am almost certainly sure that if my cohort were placed into mainstream classes in first year, we would have achieved much higher grades than we did in Science One. However, I don’t know if being in Science One could have an effect on my performance in the years to come. I do acknowledge that over the year, I was able to develop really good study habits to manage the workload and also learned to prioritize my health, which will be beneficial in the future.
However, I have also noticed that there are some “hell weeks”, where we absolutely feel like dropping out. In both terms, after term 1 and 2 conferences, where we were away at camp for the weekend (we didn’t have the weekend to do schoolwork), there was a week where there were many overlapping assessments, such as math midterms, chemistry quizzes, math assignments, and chemistry assignments, etc. These are the assessments that ended up having class averages which were below expectations, which I feel wasn’t our fault at all.
In fact, we were burnt out, but because of our wonderful Student Council, we were able to have some assignments pushed back to alleviate some of our workload and reduce burnout. Special thanks to our chemistry professors, as they were always open to planning the chemistry quizzes on days that weren’t as bad for us, and even asked us which day we wanted the quizzes. I can tell they really care about our wellbeing and our performance.
In addition, even though Science One is marketed as being prestigious, most of the people I talk to don’t even know what Science One is, and the few who do know it, know it for its intensive nature and harsh marking scheme. There is no special treatment for Science One graduates that I know of except for the occasional “wow how did you survive?”.
Generally, I don’t regret doing Science One, but if I had the chance to restart first year, I would have chosen to go the mainstream route. I feel I would have been a lot less stressed and have gotten much better grades. However, I did meet so many motivated and amazing people this year, and have generally enjoyed some aspects such as camp. Unfortunately, because of my desired major, I have seen Science One as something that may have limited my options in the future.
Do I think Science One is for you?
These are my personal opinions and please don’t take this section as the final decider for you. Be sure to do more research!
To succeed in Science One, talent can only go so far. At some point you will be challenged academically, and you will doubt yourself. But what follow is what really determines if you are a good fit for Science One. If you want to give up and do something easier, go to mainstream. If you want to persevere and to learn more, Science One may be the right choice for you. If just you want the prestige of Science One, don’t do Science One, it is not as well known as their website may make it seem. If you want to go into Computer Science, Science One may not be for you since it has little connection to Computer Science and really lowers your mark.
If you really are hard set on a competitive major which requires high marks, consider mainstream, since it is very rare and very very difficult to do well in Science One. If you really love to learn more difficult concepts, have a tight community to be by your side, to have good connections to your professors, to get some research experience, AND grades aren’t a huge concern for you, Science One is for you.
Again, take my opinion with a grain of salt. You are ultimately the right person who can make the right choice for yourself. You know yourself the best. I hope this helped and I wish you all the very best in your studies, whether you decide to go Science One or not. Feel free to DM me or reply below if you have any further questions :)

2024.05.13 01:47 Ihaftochangethename Finally upgraded to the Quest 3

I posted earlier about being hesitant to buy due to all the complaints I’ve read.
So far I am happy to report no issues. No dead pixels, no noticeable mura.
Mura I say no noticeable because I’m sure it’s there and in super bright uniform environments like Bubbles I think I notice some, but it completely disappears when I don’t intentionally focus on it. It is completely non existent in dark environments or when I’m playing something other than a white screen.
FOV I’m very happy with it so far. The increased field of view is noticeable, and it feels way less like looking through binoculars than the Q2. I’d put up with a bit of mura in white environments just for this. The tunnel vision effect kinda hurts immersion for me.
Responsiveness The frame rate and responsiveness is way better and the whole experience is smoother. None of that rubber banding that you experience when switching menus or apps in the Q2.
Mixed Reality The new full color pass through is nice. I can read my phone screen and watch whats playing on my TV. It’s not super sharp though. Not sure what resolution the cameras are but it kinda looks like video you might see from a MacBook webcam.
Disapointments The downsides are playing Q2 games on the Q3.
I played Asgards Wrath 2 a bit and smiled at how sharp and nice it looked, although I’m sure this doesn’t even use its full potential.
I booted up Blade and Sorcery to compare the Q3 with the Q2 and I was disappointed. It does run a bit smoother but the improved field of view and resolution makes the game look old. Like when you play a Nintendo 64 game on a 4K tv if that makes sense.
Final Thoughts Hoping this works out because I don’t want to return anything just want to enjoy it like I did the Q2.
I really hope we see new Quest 3 specifically developed games and apps that fully harness it’s capabilities. Really seems like we’re in that in between period between consoles generation leaps where developers are still trying to capitalize on the previous but inferior generation of tech. It might be a while before we see anything super amazing on the Q3.
Overall, as long as I don’t have any hardware issues I am very glad I upgraded and look forward to messing with AMR experiences.
Anyways posted this as a contrast to all the posts about all the defects people experienced. Those posts kept me from upgrading and while I agree that quality control needs to be improved, I don’t think the issues are as common as I was lead to believe.

IQ Subtest Variance Questions with background info
I have a 7 year old child who recently took an IQ test and I have questions about the results (pictured). We are going to discuss with the tester (a school psychologist), but I wanted to get some outside opinions as well so that I'm well equipped for the conversation. This is long, so TIA for reading and commenting.
My concern revolves around the fact that the child’s subtest scores were up to 2+ standard deviations apart from one another (see below). I’m not sure if this is “normal” or if some kind of intervention needs to take place.
Some testing and personal background:
-The child started talking in full sentences at 15 months old and reading and writing before kindergarten (with no push from us).
-They are highly sociable and seem to have an above-average social awareness (doesn’t seem to be on the autistic spectrum).
-They seem to have very high executive functioning, even reminding us of day to day scheduling that might otherwise slip through the cracks (doesn’t seem to have ADHD?).
-The child is prone to anxiety and has previously suffered from severe separation anxiety and a coughing tic. The separation anxiety seems to be innate and the coughing tic appeared during the pandemic. Our family has also dealt with a lot of chronic and emergency health issues in the past 5 years (so since the child was 2 years old).
-The test was given on a Friday early afternoon with no forewarning (pretty much worst-case scenario in my mind). And the child’s other parent was out of town for work that whole week (possible separation anxiety again).
-An anecdote about schoolwork: Two weeks ago the child brought home a worksheet with 16 math problems on it. The first 8 were perfect. The next 8 answers were such gibberish that I assumed the child was just messing around and I asked them about it (non-judgmentally, I don’t really care). The child seemed offended by such a statement and claimed to have not realized. The next week the child brought home a bunch of worksheets with about 100 math problems and they were all correct, save two where the child had subtracted instead of added.
-My partner and I, as well as the child's 9 year old sibling are all classified as “moderately gifted” according to testing.
-The child and sibling have a very close relationship and play together all day long. It’s possible that some of the child’s problem-solving skills have been dampened by reliance on the older sibling. Or that any issues with said skills were masked by the older sibling’s help.
So, what should we make of these test scores? What questions or concerns (if anything) should we bring up with the psychologist?

2024.05.13 01:04 Wontons-or-Steak If I can't find what I want, should I just take what I can get?

Pretend you are me (45F) for a moment in this metaphor for my life. You grow up around steakhouses and have never had anything else so you think you like steak too. Its all you've ever had, and you don't love it, and you'll never understand why people go gaga over steak, but it sates your hunger and you think that's normal. So you eat steak a lot, but one day you have spicy wontons and you're like, "WOW What is this?!" It's the best thing you've ever had, but nobody you know likes it and if there are Chinese restaurants near you they aren't advertising. Steakhouses, however, are beating down your door to get you to eat there. And you could only eat at that Chinese restaurant (20+F) a few times because you found out it has a drug problem and doesn't want to change. So you go back to eating steak when you're really hungry.
When you are a wonton lover in a steak world where everyone you know is a steak lover you have to trust that they know more about steaks then you do. So when the steak is bad, but it was advertised as being really good, and steak lovers tell you its a good cut you think there's something wrong with your ability to judge steak. So if it turns out that the steakhouse spent a lot of money on atmosphere and marketing, but the steaks are in the alley out back, covered in flies, sitting in the sun, about to be cooked on a rusty kettle grill, you don't know when to cut and run because the steak lovers told you this was going to be good steak. You think this is normal, so you pretend to be happy with the steakhouse. If you ever talk about wontons all the steakhouses get really weird. They either want to invite a Chinese chef to the steakhouse to watch you eat steak and wontons, or they say "You just haven't had good steak" and make you eat more steak. But you don't have room for wonton's and steak. In fact if spicy wontons were on the menu, you'd never eat steak again.
Then after asking around for wontons a while a new Chinese Restaurant (30F) beats down your door with advertisements, but the place doesn't appeal to you. You don't know enough about Chinese restaurants to know how diverse the menu is, so you think maybe you don't like Chinese restaurants and maybe that one dish at that one restaurant was the only Chinese dish you'll ever like. But when you look at menu's online you look for spicy wontons, and sometimes you even dream of eating spicy wontons. You're tired of steakhouses, and you don't know where to get wontons, so you start making steak and wontons at home. You even purchased wonton and steak cooking tools, spent a lot on them, but it doesn't satisfy the craving. The cooking isn't great, and you don't starve but it gets to the point that you lose your appetite. You eat so little that when you try steak again it physically hurts. So now you just make enough shitty wontons to get by. The problem is that the recipes you find for wontons are made by and for steakhouses, and are buried in with a lot of steak recipes, but its obvious that these wontons are meant to appeal to steakhouses. The people who make good spicy wontons have their own language and you tried to learn but got overwhelmed. You can't talk to your steak loving friends because they think wontons are gross and they feel bad for you but can't do anything to help. You don't know anybody who advertises wontons either, in fact, as statistically improbable as this is, you don't know anybody who openly cooks at a Chinese Restaurant at all. You try to get your steak loving friends to eat spicy wontons with you, but even though they love you as a friend, they want to eat steak and won't even try wontons. Some steak lovers pretend to like wontons because steakhouses like to watch steak lovers eat steak and wontons. As a result some Chinese restaurants tell you they are closed when they find out you have spent a lot of time at steakhouses because they believe steakhouse-wonton lovers are often wonton pretenders.
You moved from a place that had almost no Chinese restaurants, to a place that has tons of them, and they serve not just wonton's but all types of new Chinese dishes, but in this place many of the steakhouses attack the Chinese restaurants. Some steakhouses are trying to pass laws to make Chinese dishes of all kinds illegal, and its working. But since there's more Chinese restaurants around you get to read more menus and learn that not all wonton recipes sound good. You learn what wontons you crave and which are less appetizing. Its been years of you surviving off steakhouse wonton recipes, and recently you've noticed your appetite comes back a little here and there. Sometimes it comes and goes before you can even make wontons, but a few times the wontons just aren't enough and you crave more, so you want to try other people's wontons. Now that you are learning the recipes online you find that the dish you like isn't on many menu's, its not illegal or immoral (except to people who religiously love steakhouses), it's just difficult to find. You come to the realization that if you find someone who really likes wontons they will want you to make wontons with them and you still can't cook well, and don't have a good recipe to practice. You really need to be taught by a wonton chef, but you remember what it was like learning to cook steak for the steakhouse which wasn't satisfying, but you didn't know how to leave. You hated that experience so much you're afraid to start over with spicy wontons, but also why would a wonton chef waste their time teaching you when they could find someone else who knows how to cook. Some Chinese restaurants are open to steak, but wonton chefs are usually not, and you have had a lot of steak.
You've only eaten spicy wonton's at a restaurant once many years ago, but its the best thing you've ever had, and you can't find anything like it. Recently you've seen advertisements for a nice steakhouse. Of all the steakhouses you've seen, this looks like it might be the nicest, and you've been to enough steakhouses that you think you might be better at judging them by now. Its been years since you've shared a meal. You know that you crave wontons and you don't have room for steak and wontons, but steak is better than starving. You're starting to get hungry and don't want to eat alone forever. If the steakhouse has a reservation available, do you take it? Or continue looking for a good spicy wonton dish while quietly making wonton's for 1 at home?

I have just 100%ed RDR2 on PS5 and now feeling utterly bereft lol so looking for recommendations on what game I can get fully immersed in next because I’m wasting money on games I’m not enjoying.
For context I have only ever played Skyrim and KCD prior to RDR2. I recently downloaded Witcher 3 because of all the hype and it seemed to tick all of my boxes but, for the life of me, I cannot seem to get into it. I can’t put my finger on why…I REALLY wanted to love it but it all just feels a bit of a chore, the menus are bloated and it’s quite overwhelming as I haven’t read the books or played the first 2 games. I also downloaded RDR1 but let’s be honest, it was always going to be underwhelming compared to RDR2.
Basically I’m looking for an open world, sandbox RPG type game with lots of exploration. I love historic / medieval settings and enjoy survival elements (but that’s not essential). Futuristic games put me right off, I don’t like machine guns or exploding helicopters so I think GTA / Fallout type games wouldn’t be for me. I also don’t want anything that looks cartoony i.e. Zelda. Any help much appreciated.

I’ll start with the job posting, I guess. I spotted it on Indeed while making my daily check for anything and everything that would hire someone with my biology degree, and it seemed on the up and up. Their website looked decent, the guy on the phone sounded nice, and I was looking for anything even slightly related to working with wildlife. Being a nightshift guard at a zoo was fine, especially when I took the incredibly generous rate of $25/hr. into account. That’s eleven bucks more than my dad makes at the local grocer, and he’s been working there for thirteen years. Then again, from the P.S. on the posting, I thought there might be good reason for the rate.
It said at the end, almost as an afterthought, ‘Zoo is haunted.’
When it comes to ghosts, they’ve never made much sense to me. Considering how badly our brains function from just getting jostled around on a football field, I’m not sure how ghosts could exist without a brain at all. I’d be excited as the next person to find proof, but YouTube videos are always fishy and the people on TV are essentially actors who only focus on the entertainment factor for their ratings. So, since I’d never seen anything that vaguely resembled a ghost, I’d say binge-watching Supernatural on Netflix last year was the extent of my experience in that department.
It seemed that the zoo hadn’t been here for long since it wasn’t even on Google Maps yet. There was a bit of a commute, it was half an hour away, but since I’d worked local jobs while I attended college online for the past four years, I’d saved up the money to buy a car. It wasn’t anything fancy, just an old Nissan sedan that I’d bought from someone in the next town over, with faded red paint and a mismatched back right door painted blue. It accomplished the job of transportation, though, which let me search the job market further away, a good thing considering how small a town I lived in. I really didn’t want to leave home yet, so moving for a job in a city or another state wasn’t an appealing option.
The website said very little. It had yet to fill in drop down menus that would excitedly describe their attractions. So far it only had some small sections about conservation and education, though that was intriguing because it mentioned that all the animals they had were endangered. I read that notation and wondered what the animals were. Mammals were always favorites of mine, which I know is a bit of a cliché, loving the furry ones. But when it comes down to it, I’ll take any animal over a person.
The employee entrance to the zoo was a door in the large steel gate that surrounded the property, a few yards down from the sliding gate that presumably opened to let visitors in. I pressed the button on a panel beside it, glancing up at the camera, and I was buzzed in. There was a short path that led to the building near the front and I knocked politely before going inside.
The interviewer, a plain metal nameplate on his desk describing him as Director of Security for the zoo, welcomed me in and sat on the other side of his desk, lounging back in his desk chair. His name was Andrew Higgs, and he had a British accent, which I thought was cool. I sat in one of the two loveseats in front of the desk.
Andrew was dressed business casual, with a blue Polo shirt, a thin black jacket, and I saw he was wearing slacks when he stood up to shake my hand. He was black, with dreadlocks that stopped just short of his shoulders, and a closely trimmed mustache. There was a tattoo, an artistic rendition of a hippo, on the right side of his neck, which bode well in my opinion. So many places hiring these days were overly uptight about their employees’ appearance, but it seemed that wouldn’t be the case here.
We went over the basics before he picked up the piece of paper off his desk, my resume, which he’d printed out. “Well, I spoke to all three of your references,” Andrew noted. “They had some good things to say. You were a great employee on the farm you worked last summer, your boss said. Punctual, hard-working, took instructions well…”
That was nice to hear. I’d spent this past summer working at a dairy farm, mostly assigned to the goats and cows they kept for milk. Aside from the staggering muscle pain that tapered from agony to merely miserable by the end of the summer, it wasn’t a bad job. I did have an old shoulder injury that I always had to work around, but it was my left shoulder and I was a righty, so it wasn’t that difficult to manage.
If anything, the muscle pain in my back and legs from being on my feet all day distracted from the typical issue I dealt with. My standard exercising day-to-day was typically either riding my bike or yoga, although yoga is mind-numbingly boring, so I need to listen to a podcast to pass the time. So, in fact, through the job, I was sort of grateful that my brain was focusing on a different area of my body that was in pain. Yeah, chronic pain is weird.
“He also said you don’t work well with others,” Andrew added, glancing up to me. “You kept submitting complaints about incompetent coworkers?”
I pursed my lips and let out a long breath through my nose, considering the most delicate way I was capable of replying to that before saying, “I dislike stupid people.”
Andrew gave me a half-smile and sighed, replying, “Well, I must confess I’m not fond of them either.” He looked back down to the paper. “This job will be a great fit for you.”
The job interview seemed like a formality, and I don’t know why. I was twenty-three and the ink had barely dried on my degree from the online college I’d attended. I’d been applying to jobs for months and had been thrilled when I’d gotten a call for an interview for this one, but also surprised. Call me a cynic, but I expected more invasive questions about any past work I’d done for a job in security, since I was a woman.
It's not like I was petite. Actually, the most common word I’d heard to describe me is ‘built’, and I fall short of being labeled overweight only because of muscle mass. One comment I recall from high school was being teased for being shaped like a rectangle. Even so, there was no good reason to look a gift horse in the mouth, but of course, me being me, that meant I examined its teeth closely.
“So, you’re hiring me? Just like that? Why?”
Andrew, chuckled. “Look, you’ve got BA in wildlife biology, and specializing in animal behavior is just the cherry on the sundae. That tells me you know animals are not people, and even if you feel like you know them, they can still be unpredictable. They can hurt you. But also, it makes me know you care.”
I suppose that did make sense, and it was true, so I’m glad he knew that. Most of my job on the night shift would be watching cameras and then walking around the place to make sure all the animals were as they should be, but it was more than that. Working at a zoo meant knowing where the line was, and sometimes it wasn’t exactly at the fence, but sometimes just putting a single finger through that fence meant losing that finger. As a whole, humans are generally idiots. Looking at you, anyone who really, honestly thinks that a bobcat would sense your boundless love enough to let you pat it.
“The website didn’t have much about the animals,” I said. “I know this place is new, so you might not have info on them up on the site yet. Do you have a map for me?”
“Oh, we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it,” Andrew said with a wave of his hand. At that point, it had seemed to be a reasonable thing for him to say, but I will tell you, the reason was not what I thought. “Just to confirm, you’re not an early bird, Miss Mason? This schedule isn’t a concern?”
I shook my head. “Nah, I’m pretty talented at sleeping in, actually. I never really got past that teenage talent of staying up until five and sleeping in until three. And you can just call me Ripley.”
That made him smile. “Good. Then I won’t worry about you falling asleep on the job, Ripley.”
“Oh, no way.”
“All right. So. You saw the note at the end of the job posting?”
He just stared at me and I was forced to answer, “That the zoo is haunted.”
“Right. What are your thoughts on that?”
There was no easy answer to that question, especially depending on how seriously he took it. “Do you know the best word the Brits gave to us?”
“What’s that?”
“Bollocks.”
Andrew slowly smiled and pointed at me with the end of the pen in his hand. “I think I’m going to like you,” he remarked. “Look…this is the part of the interview where we switch gears. If this was a regular zoo, you’d be a shoo-in for the job. But we’ve got other boxes to check. This outfit is…basically a preservation society. As you saw on the site, all the species are endangered, but what it didn’t say online is that the only people who came to visit are private parties.”
“So, that means…what?” I asked. “You bring in super-rich people who feel special when they get to see the animals you’re rehabilitating and taking care of? Then they donate oodles of money so they can brag to their rich friends about their charity contributions and having seen the animals here?”
Andrew raised his eyebrows. “Pretty much got it in one. It’s just more preservation and less rehabilitation. And a lot of our patrons really do care about the animals, or else they would just donate and not visit. You’ll see tourists a couple times a week, but we decided not to have anyone until we’re settled in here, and that means a person who’s on during the night shift that I can count on. And I don’t know if I can count on you yet.”
“Wait, I’ll see the tourists?” I asked. “They visit at night?”
“Everything we have is nocturnal,” he told me. That struck me as odd, but he continued before I could question it. “Listen up, and I’ll start with the basics. Have you ever seen anything weird? Possibly supernatural?”
“Nope,” I said with a shrug.
The fact is, I got along with my classmates, but I never did have any close friends. So, I thought maybe that’s why I missed out on all those reckless teen moments that started every horror movie. Maybe it left me without a bunch of exciting stories to tell. But hey, at least I didn’t break my leg falling through the floor of an abandoned building in eleventh grade.
Yes, that happened. It was a classmate of mine by the name of Brent. And yes, he’s just as much of a moron as you would imagine.
“If you see the ghost here,” he said, his tone emphatic, “will you freak out?”
I paused. “You’ve seen the ghost?”
“All the time,” Andrew told me. “It’s a young woman in a blue shirt and tan slacks, looks like she just walked out of a lake.”
“Do you have a picture?”
“No, and absolutely no photos or video are to be taken of her,” he said, his tone abruptly turning stern. “It’s cause for immediate dismissal. We have video cameras for security, but they all record off-site in a secure location, and Suzanne Cooper, the owner, manages it herself. Firstly, the ghost deserves privacy rather than exploitation, she’s not to be displayed like one of our animals, but secondly, people believe in ghosts. One leaked photo of her connecting it to us means we get overrun by ghost hunters, and if we trace it back to you, you’re done.”
Andrew seemed next-level serious about that, so I nodded. “Understood. That makes sense.”
The animals were the priority after all, I knew. I preferred them over people anyway, and that included dead people. Even if I could get a video of this ghost doing cartwheels back and forth through a wall, I would never post it and spread word of where I’d taken it. Andrew was right; the zoo would never get the paranormally-obsessed to stay away and would definitely have to relocate.
He continued, “If you’re curious, she’s never so much as tried to hurt anyone. But the zoo has moved before, and she moved with us.”
“She moved with you?” I asked, my eyebrows rising. “Is it like one of those stories where she’s attached to something in the zoo rather than a place?”
“More complicated than that,” he said. Then he grimaced. “She died because she was too ambitious with one of our animals. It never should have happened, but she… She was foolish, you’d say. Attempted to interact with one of the animals, got too close, and honestly, she should have known better. I thought she did.”
“Holy shit,” I whispered. “What killed her?”
He stared at his hands and shook his head. “It was before my time.”
It was clear Andrew was a true believer, but I still really wasn’t sure at that point. How was I supposed to react, though? Zoos have fences and tall barriers for a good reason. Not just to keep the animals away from us, but also the other way around, and ‘death by stupidity’ is not uncommon amongst humans. So, the story wasn’t outrageous, but still, I’d never so much as experienced something unexplainable. But if I saw a ghost, I suppose that’d be that.
“I just need to know, plain and simple, if you’re the kind of person who can handle things that are terrifying,” Andrew told me, splaying his hands. “Our last night shift bloke there was with us for years and years, but we spent months going through other employees. There were six we tried before we found him.”
“Six?” I exclaimed.
He snorted. “Yes, six. Let’s see…” Andrew counted off each one on his fingers. “The first two, the first night they saw the ghost, they lost it. One called me in a panic, babbling, and I had to get out of bed and drive to the zoo to send him home, and the second quit, although at least she made it to the next morning and didn’t drag me out here,” he said, his voice thoughtful. “They just thought I was blowing smoke up their bums with the whole thing.”
He shrugged. “Then, the third one was a bloke who was asleep when I got there in the morning, so I had to fire him. Then another ghost freak-out. The fifth bloke was someone who couldn’t deal with the animals, and then the sixth was so scared of the ghost that when I got here, he was already outside the zoo, pacing, waiting for my car. Apparently he’d said some stuff, rude or mean or whatnot, to try to get her to leave him alone and she had followed him back into the security room, so he fled. I need the opposite of those folks. Alright?”
At this point, I was starting to take it more seriously. Sure, this could just be Andrew’s thing, that he believed in ghosts and then made up these sightings to ensure I believed him. But if I saw her? What would I do?
Well, this would be my job, so I would have to take it seriously. Maybe that was why the pay was so good, to make employees think twice before ditching it. From Andrew’s perspective, if it really was haunted, he was the one who had to deal with applicant after applicant quitting as soon as they laid eyes on the guest who would never leave.
“So…honestly, I can’t say I won’t freak out, considering how next level this is,” I told him, feeling compelled to go with honesty, “but yeah. I think I can handle it, mostly because it’s important for someone to look after this place, look after the animals, so I’d do my best to work around anything that freaks me out. I mean, I have to say that I’ll believe it when I see it. But if ghosts really exist, as long as it isn’t some serial killer who stuck around to keep gutting people, I’ve always thought it’d be cool to find out we can exist after we die.”
The thing is, I think I did believe him. I thought there might really be a ghost there, because otherwise, why take it so seriously? It could’ve been that Andrew had only glimpsed her out of the corner of his eye a few times and could ascribe it to lack of sleep, but he was literally worried about word getting out. I thought that being halfway to believing him would give me the mental preparation I needed if I saw her. At least, I’d hoped so.
It turned out that most of my time would be spent at the security desk in the main building, near the entrance. Real-time footage played through thirty-five cameras around the zoo, all on a large screen that was five cameras across and seven cameras top to bottom. The cameras were impressive. I would mention the resolution, say something about them being 4K, but Andrew explained some stuff about how it’s actually the lens that is the biggest selling point. Looking at these cameras on the giant screen, I could see practically every corner of the place, and if I brought up one camera in particular to encompass 2/3 of the screen, I could zoom in so far that it felt like I could use it to check if one of the animals had fleas.
The zoo was well lit, not surprising considering nighttime was apparently the zoo’s business hours, and all of the tall lamps had red bulbs. For those of you who know why, A+ to you. For those who don’t, fun fact, it’s because red is closest to the dark and your eyes don’t need to strain to adjust to it. That meant I didn’t need my flashlight all that often, and even that was red, a solid name-brand one that had been on my desk when I arrived. I kept the white lights on back in the security room, though, because I didn’t want to make my brain think it was time to get tired.
When I headed out for my first sweep on that first night, I had the folded map in my pocket, but I already knew my way around. The layout of the zoo wasn’t that difficult to memorize, since there were only eleven expansive enclosures, and after the interview I walked around for half an hour to start training my memory. I’ll admit, working in a dark environment was creepier than I thought it would be.
I do want to mention the high quality of the zoo. The size of each enclosure was considerable, and the greenery was natural, hinting that they’d hired a pricey professional just to do landscaping toward the front of the enclosures after buying the land. The backs of the enclosures backed up into forestry, and from the estimate I got from Andrew, it seemed each of the animals had plenty of roaming space, including the small lake at the northwest corner and a manmade lake for one of the animals in particular. When I considered all of that, the thought passed through my head about how horrible it would be if word got out about the zoo having a ghost and needing to relocate, because it’d be devastatingly expensive.
My orders were to walk the zoo once every hour. This was my first security gig, so I’m not sure if that’s more or less than typical, but I had my comfy hiking boots on, the ones I’d saved up for and invested in a couple years earlier and were perfect for a job where I had to do laps around an area. This job was one that I didn’t have to worry about my shoulder pain worsening, since it was mostly about being on my feet. I take one or two Vicodin a day, depending on how bad my pain is. It came in handy in high school, actually. With a flexible ‘take as needed’ prescription, I occasionally sold pills for extra cash.
There wasn’t much to step in and there weren’t even any dips in the concrete sidewalks that I followed around in a route that easily led me back and forth until I made my way back to the office. The first three nights were actually boring. I would have thought Andrew had been pranking me about the ghost, but like I said, it hadn’t felt like that. And he hadn’t been specific about when she showed up for new people, or even for him.
To keep myself busy, I’d brought my e-reader with me, and I got into a cycle of looking over each of the cameras every time I hit the end of a chapter. I’m a pretty fast reader, so it was a good system. Also, every once in a while, I looked up if something moving caught my eye, like an owl flying close enough for the camera to catch it, but that’s about it.
Then, every hour on the hour, I did a walk through. The fourth night, I was passing by the small lake at the back left corner of the property when I saw her.
People say that you can tell if someone’s staring at you, that there’s some sixth sense humans have. It’s not true; they’ve done experiments. But the thing is, all those experiments were of someone human looking at them. After this last shift, I would guess that the sixth sense that sends goosebumps down your arms, the one that makes you feel an intangible pressure, that slides your body toward fight or flight mode, might be true of…other things.
Slowly coming to a stop at the disturbing feeling, I hesitantly looked around, through the trees. Then my heart skipped a beat and my breath hitched. It was startling because she wasn’t moving. Just standing among the trees, staring at me. I broke out in a cold sweat as I stared back at her, unsure what to do. I didn’t run. I didn’t try to talk to her. I just stood there. So, there’s my answer to Andrew: I didn’t freak out. I just froze.
The woman was Latina, her skin tone pallid from death, and was dressed as he’d described her, in slacks and a silky blue blouse. And she was soaked, as if she’d just walked out of the lake. Beyond that, her shirt was drenched in blood from what looked like claw marks across her abdomen. Her eyes were dark and penetrating, boring holes into me, as if she were able to get any and all knowledge that she wanted about me simply by glaring. The fabric of her shirtsleeves clung to her skin and was dripping, as was her long black hair. Speaking of her hair, it appeared to have seaweed woven into it, or maybe she also grew seaweed along with hair. Not my area of expertise.
The look on her face was indescribable. There was something deep in her eyes, behind her closed-off expression, that made my heart beat rapidly. Maybe I would’ve projected some emotion into her face if I’d had any idea of what she was capable of, whether she could move objects, or possess me, or if all she did was hang around. As things stood, I was left just projecting my fears, which gave me the impression that she was cross with me simply for being present. It felt like I was trespassing, even though I was a dozen feet back from the fence that encircled the enclosure. And also, this was my job so I was explicitly allowed to be here.
She was disturbingly close, and remained unnaturally still. If she had attacked me, I wasn’t sure what I would’ve done. Ran, probably, but considering ghosts probably don’t follow the laws of physics, maybe she could’ve chased me at Usain Bolt speed. For all I knew, she could teleport.
After an amount of time that felt awkwardly long, I finally spoke up.
“Hi,” I croaked.
The woman slowly tilted her head but didn’t otherwise move. I’d forgotten to ask Andrew for her name, I realized, but he had mentioned her death had been before his time, so maybe he didn’t know.
Swallowing hard, I tried to take a slow, deep breath, even though it felt like there was a cinder block on my chest. “So, I, uh…I work here now,” I said slowly. “I’m night shift security.” Pausing, I kept trying to gather information from her demeanor but failed. “Is that okay?”
At that, I saw a hint of curiosity flash across her face. “Why would it not be?” Her voice sounded completely normal, which was an off-putting contrast to her appearance.
Good question. Hell if I know the answer. “I don’t know. I mean…you were here first. I don’t know if you feel like I’m…intruding…or something.”
“You’re just doing your job,” she said, her tone softening a smidge.
I waited to see if she wanted to say anything else before saying, “Right.” Can I get you anything? A towel? Some bandages? “I’ll be going now.”
The woman made no movement to come after me as I gradually took one step, then another, keeping her in my sights as I walked off. I finally had to turn to face forward, unable or unwilling to be seen by her foolishly walking away backwards. Instead of continuing my sweep, I took the path that would lead me back to the security room. I kept looking behind me and felt her eyes on me all the way back, though I didn’t see her following me. At that point, even if she hadn’t moved an inch, my brain was on red alert when it came to self-preservation and figured I would continue to feel like a wet hand might grab me from behind at any moment.
Finally, I returned to the security room, swiping my card across the panel at the back door with a beep. Opening the door, darting inside, and slamming it behind me, I walked to the far side of the room and turned around, putting my back to the wall. Until I’d gotten back, I hadn’t noticed how fast I’d been walking, how quickly I’d been gasping for air. Leaning back against the wall, my legs turned to jelly and I slowly slid to the floor.
And that was it. My first sighting of the ghost. I’d thought that if I had seen her, there would be some part of me that was skeptical, that would reason my way out of it, convinced it was a prank. But I knew. She wasn’t a person. At least, not anymore.

Hi folks. I’m building a reflex testing game where you have to click as soon as possible when the lights go out. As well as tracking the users average time across the session, I also want some kind of reward system so that people can try and beat their own scores over a fixed number of attempts, compare with their friends and eventually use the scores for private and world leaderboards etc.
Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:
🏆 Experience (EXP) - Earned through genuine reaction times.
🍀Luck (LCK) - Rewarded for timely guesses.
The base value is 0.001 and multipliers are added to EXP and LCK independently based on your reaction time. I’ve used this decimal style scoring to be a bit like a crypto currency value, which’ll then be accompanied by coin style graphics in certain menus going forward, just for something a little different.
For now, the multipliers are only based on your reflex time for the current turn, but eventually I would like to add bonus multipliers if they beat their all-time fastest or luckiest score, get the best average for that game mode, get the best score today or this week, etc. (Now I’ve typed this out, I’m thinking this might skew results and make an unfair playing field when we start diving into leaderboard territory so maybe I should not do this. It might still be cool to notify the user that they’ve beaten that particular record though and make it not affect the scores)
I’ve seen comments around a similar game where people are boasting reaction times of 0.012 seconds, but that’s not humanly possible. The fastest human reaction times start at around 100-150ms. That’s why I’ve tried to make a distinction between genuine reaction times and lucky guesses and reward people for both situations.

Initial Proposal

I’ve therefore come up with the following system, allowing for a grey area around the 100ms-200ms range where it’s hard to tell if it was luck or genuine.
The left number represents the upper bound of the range, so a score of 210ms would land you in the 250ms range.

First Revision

Thanks so much for the feedback so far! I’ve now made the following revisions which is making it already feel like an improvement and much easier to follow:
Gona go classic and use plain old XP, but will simply keep a “Guesses” counter which tracks the number of times recorded below 75ms, just for the users information. I did a little more research, and apparently your subconscious is actually capable of reacting as low as 80ms if communication with your conscious mind is bypassed, crazy stuff!
Therefore a score of 75-100ms will bag you the highest possible XP for a single turn, tapering off as your reaction becomes slower:
Reflex Time - XP - <75ms - 50xp (Lucky) - <= 100ms - 300xp (Subconscious) - <= 125ms - 275xp (Instantaneous) - <= 150ms - 250xp (Super Human) - <= 175ms - 225xp (Professional) - <= 200ms - 200xp (Expert) - <= 225ms - 175xp (Proficient) - <= 250ms - 150xp (Advanced) - <= 275ms - 125xp (Intermediate) - <= 300ms -100xp (Rookie) - <= 350ms - 50xp (Amateur) - <= 400ms - 25xp (Beginner) - <= 500ms - 10xp (Novice) - >1s - 1xp (Idle)
I’ll then write an algorithm to build a linear scale that gives you the appropriate score for your exact time. E.g A score of 208ms would give you something like 192xp.
I’ll finally need a separate ranking system to score your performance for the session, but maybe I base this entirely on the average you were able to achieve for the session, rather than basing it on the amount of XP earned? 🤔
